Title: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Catherine_B on Oct 23rd, 2003, 7:53pm
The board is back!  Yay :)

So here's one old post and one new about Kathie & Nancy...
(Archived part at http://members.lycos.co.uk/thecbb/altrom.html )
---

The friends fell quiet upon entering the grand hallway.
“Welcome to the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana,” they were greeted by a young man at the door.  “Is this your first visit to the collection?”
“It is.”
“In that case, a doubly warm welcome.”  He smiled.  “Please take this guide to the exhibition.  Not all of the collection is on display, of course, but I think you will find quite enough to enjoy.  May I suggest that you start in this room on the right?  It houses our precious Gutenberg Bible, and our second century edition of the Gospel According to St. John.”
Nancy and Kathie needed no further encouragement and, thanking the curator for his help, headed towards the ancient manuscripts.

“Oh!” Nancy gave a quiet gasp at the Gutenberg Bible’s vivid illuminations.  “Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?”
“It’s perfect” her friend whispered.  “The colours still glow, even after hundreds of years.”
They gazed at the manuscript reverently.
“Imagine the revolution Gutenberg must have caused with this printed Bible, back in the fifteenth century” said Kathie in hushed tones, after some minutes.
Nancy nodded.  “The first major book to be printed in the west, and scripture too.”
“Do any others remain, besides the ones? in the British Library?”
“Oh yes – about fifty, I believe.  But each one has unique illustrations,” replied Nancy, looking at the manuscript in wonder.

They remained to admire the historic work for some time longer.  Then they turned towards the world’s oldest surviving text of the Gospel of St. John.  Both were silent, feeling that no words could do justice to the book, but Nancy caught sight of the awe on Kathie’s face and, understanding her younger colleague’s reaction, slipped her hand through her friend’s.

Afterwards the two companions continued around the collection, enjoying the paintings and sculptures as well as the literary manuscripts.  Finally they came to a room with first editions of Goethe’s great novels.
“Ah” said Nancy with satisfaction.  “This is the passage that has been eluding me all week.”  She indicated a volume of Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and quoted, “’Die Welt ist so leer, wenn man nur Berge, Flüsse und Städte darin denkt…’  ‘The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities, but to know that there is someone who thinks and feels with us -- this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.’” She looked at Kathie tenderly.  “That’s what I feel, now, my love.”
The friends smiled at each other, feeling at peace with the world.  Then, with this fitting end to their expedition, they made their way out of the library and back towards Geneva.

“Nancy!  Are you sleeping with your eyes open, old thing?” Kathie’s voice cut across her friend’s reverie.  It was Thursday evening, and their holiday had just one full day left.
“Sorry, my dear” Nancy gave a slight start.  “I was just thinking that our week is drawing to a close.  Your train leaves for Paris on Saturday, and I’ll be heading back to the Platz.”  She looked suddenly wistful.
Kathie smiled at her friend.  “Well, there are such things as letters, you know.  And I’m dying to see Auntie and Uncle again – you wouldn’t begrudge me that, I hope!”
“Of course not!”  Nancy looked properly shocked.
“Good!  And, even though we’ll never have this holiday over again, it’s only the first of many.  I’m going to spend my savings from this year on a little motor car, and we’ll be able to make weekend trips around the country during term time” Kathie said cheerfully.
Nancy’s face brightened.  “Really?”
“Definitely.  I’d been considering it for some time, actually, but this week has made my mind up.  We’ll want to get away from school sometimes, you know.”
“Yes.”  A cloud passed again over Nancy’s face.
Kathie shot her companion a swift glance.  “What is it, Nance?  Something’s been eating you all day.  Won’t you tell me?”

Instead of answering, Nancy stood up abruptly and crossed the little sitting room.  She stood at the window for some moments, staring out onto the mountains with unseeing eyes. Then, with a smothered exclamation, she turned back.
“Oh!  How will we bear it at school, with no one knowing?”
Kathie sighed, but without surprise.  The conversation had been inevitable.
“Nancy, what else can we do?”
“Oh, nothing, I know.”  Nancy’s voice had an edge of frustration, and she paced back and forward across the room.  “But, Kathie, don’t you see – you have friends in England whom you can tell about us.  Not many perhaps, but some.  But my friends and acquaintances – they’re all connected to the Chalet School.”
“I do see.”
“It’s so ridiculous!” Nancy continued impatiently.  “You mean so much to me - I want to tell the world how I feel about you – and instead I’m supposed to pretend that nothing has happened?”
Kathie tossed up her hands in despair.
“Nancy, I wish I could say something different.  Don’t you know how proud I’d be to have people know that you care for me?  But you could lose your job.”
“I wouldn’t care” said Nancy through gritted teeth.
“Well I would.” Kathie stood up to face her friend.  “You’re far too good a teacher to throw away your career on other people’s prejudices.  And teaching is my vocation, too.”
“Oh!” Nancy uttered an incoherent exclamation.  “Kathie, I’d never want to put you at risk, you must know that.”
“I’m glad to hear it.”  The younger woman’s tone was measured.  She glanced at her partner, and her voice softened slightly.  “Why shouldn’t we be happy this way, Nancy?  There are advantages to our situation, after all.  We’ll be able to work, which we couldn’t do if we were married.  We’ll be near one another.  And, over time, people will grow accustomed to the closeness of our friendship.  They’ll think of us as ‘companions’ – like Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson.” She gave a slight smile. “It’s not so much less than the truth.”

Nancy heaved a deep sigh.  Then she crossed the room to her diminutive colleague.
“Kathie, don’t be angry with me.”  She put her arms around her friend’s neck.  “You’re quite right, I know you are.  And I am grateful – enormously grateful – for what we have.”
The tension between them started draining away.
“All the same,” she said slowly, searching for the right words. “I am going to ask your permission to tell one person.”

A moment’s silence.
“Who?”
“One of my oldest friends.  Hilary Graves.”
There was a sharp intake of breath.
“Nancy, she’s at the Platz.  What if - ”
“Please, Kathie.”
“How much do you trust her?”
“More than anyone else.”
“Is that enough?”

Another silence.
“It has to be.”

Breath taking.

Will Hilary be able to keep it to herself, and what will her reaction be. I get the feeling that Nancy has some idea of how she will take it, she certainly appears to trust her. I could be hideously wrong of course.

Oh, before the board blew up I wanted to know if the library was real. Is it?

Kathie Ferrars stared at the ceiling with sleepless eyes.  It was 3a.m.  She hadn’t managed to fall asleep yet, and seriously doubted that she would get any rest that night.  She stifled a sigh.  She and Nancy had planned to visit Hilary at the Graves’ country house near Geneva in the morning, but given Nancy’s pronouncement, Kathie had declared that she would go shopping instead.  “And wait for judgement” she thought, tensely.

Turning onto her side, the young mistress took a deep breath.   “Come along, Kathleen,” she berated herself silently.  “Don’t be unreasonable.  You knew that Nancy would want to share her news with friends.  It’s just a little earlier than you’d expected, that’s all.”  She bit her lip.  “And she’s known Hilary Graves for years.”
“Yes” said a voice of doubt.  “But Hilary is married with children.  Why should she understand?”
“She cares for Nancy.”
“Parents disown their children for what you’re doing.”
“Be quiet!” Kathie commanded the niggling voice.  She groaned inwardly.  “Talking to myself – the first sign of madness!”   She closed her eyes and tried to clear her mind.  “Oh God.  What if Hilary tells her husband, who tells Jack, who tells Jo, who tells the Heads?  And we lose our jobs, and I have to explain to Auntie and Uncle, and no employer will take me on.”  She shuddered as a surge of panic coursed through her.  “I love my job!  I don’t want to lose it!”
“Yet if I don’t trust Nancy with this,” she continued her inner conversation after a moment, “it could destroy our relationship.  She needs to tell someone.  Oh, why can’t I have faith?”

Faith!  The word cleared her brain suddenly.  Kathie inhaled slowly and felt her body relax.  “Dear God,” she uttered silently, “Whatever happens tomorrow, please help me – and Nancy – to accept it.  If you are with us, we can bear anything.”  For the first time since their evening conversation, she felt a sense of calm.  Settling down in the bed, she closed her eyes once more, and drifted off to sleep at last.

“Nancy Wilmot!  Welcome to Les Sorbiers, old thing!” Hilary Graves, née Burn, greeted her old school-friend delightedly as the latter entered the gate to the Graves’ summer home.  She gave Nancy a bear-like hug.  “It’s so good to see you.  Especially away from school, without any cares or responsibilities” she added with an infectious grin.
“Well, you look a bit less tired too than last time we met” returned Nancy, smiling.  “Lois had just arrived, and you looked totally washed out!  But you seem fit as a fiddle now.”
“Oh yes” said Hilary cheerily. “I’ve never believed in lying in bed.  I’ve much too much energy.”
Nancy laughed.  “Once a games mistress, always a games mistress…”
They set off up the garden path.
“So where are Marjorie and Lois?” Nancy asked, after they had exchanged some commonplace greetings.
“Oh, they’re in the nursery with Gretel – our help, you know.  She comes in the mornings and looks after the children, or helps with the housework.  And Phil is still at the San, I’m afraid.  He says to send his apologies, but he was needed for a new case.”  The doctor’s wife looked serious for a moment.  “It didn’t sound like they have much hope.”
“I’m sorry.”  Nancy was used to living near the San, and she knew the strain the doctors and their families could be under.
“Yes, well…  it’s not in our hands.”  Hilary turned the subject.  “Where’s Kathie Ferrars, by the way?  I thought you were both coming to visit.”
“Oh, Kathie sends her greetings,” Nancy answered quickly.  “But she thought we might want some time to chat properly, seeing that we didn’t get much time at the Reunion.  She’s gone shopping in the Old Town.”
“That’s thoughtful of her.  She seems a jolly girl, too.  The Heads made a good choice with that one, didn’t they?”

The friends reached the house at this moment, and Nancy was spared an answer.  Her mind cast back, however, to the slight young woman who had stood before her that morning.
“Good luck, Nancy” Kathie’s voice had been under control, despite the anxiety that Nancy knew she must feel.  “I’m with you all the way, my love, whatever happens.”

“Not just a jolly girl” thought Nancy to herself, as she entered Hilary’s house, “but an exceptionally courageous one.”

Edited to add:

“Hil, there’s something I want to tell you” began Nancy, once they were settled in kitchen, where Hilary was making the final preparations for lunch.
“Oh?” her friend looked up inquiringly.
“But” continued Nancy resolutely, “I need your word of honour that you won’t tell anyone else.  It’s strictly private.”
Hilary stared at her friend.  “Since when have I been in the habit of breaking confidences?” she demanded.
“No, I don’t mean it like that.  It’s just – this is really important, Hil.”
Hilary gave a nod.  “OK, if it’s like that.  But what is it, Nance?”

Having got this far, Nancy wavered for a moment.
“Hilary, how long have we been friends?”
“About twenty years, I should think!” Hilary smiled at her quizzically.  “Why?”
“Well… I really value our friendship, Hil.”
“And?  But?”
“I’m afraid that, when I’ve told you this thing, you might not want to know me.”
“What?!” Hilary stared at her friend again.  “My dear, you sound like you’ve committed a murder!”
Nancy laughed faintly.  “No, it’s nothing criminal.  At least, maybe it is - I don’t know” she looked puzzled for an instant.
Hilary put down the dough she was kneading.  “Nancy Wilmot, I’ve known you since we were wicked Middles together at St Scholastika’s,” she said seriously.  “We suppressed delinquents like Elizabeth Arnett and Betty Wynne-Davis as Prees at the Chalet.  You were one of my bridesmaids.  And you’re my closest, longest-standing friend.  In all the time that I’ve known you I have never, ever had reason to doubt your good sense and judgement.  Now,” she continued decisively, “I have no desire to extract a confidence from you if you’re not ready to make it, but I want you to know that whatever it is, I will stand by you.  Even if it is a criminal offence!” she wound up.

Nancy flushed at this diatribe.  “Hilary” she gave a slight gulp, “I’ve found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with.  And it’s a woman.”

Hilary Graves stared at her friend in amazement.  Then, to Nancy’s astonishment, she threw back her head and shouted with laughter.
“Oh my goodness!” Hilary gasped, when she had recovered her breath sufficiently to talk.  “Nancy, I thought you were going to tell me something dreadful.”
“I – what - ?” Nancy looked completely taken aback.  “Hil, don’t you believe me?”
“Of course I do, you ass!” retorted her friend.  Then, seeing Nancy’s face, she strode around the table to give her friend a warm embrace, heedless of her floury hands.  “My dear girl, I’m delighted for you.  It was about time you found someone.  You’re far too special to be alone all your life.”  She stopped short.  “That is – I take it she feels the same way?”
Nancy nodded, speechlessly, in the cloud of flour that Hilary had created about her.
“Who is she?”
“Kathie Ferrars.”
Hilary gurgled with laughter.  “I’m glad I said nice things about her” she grinned, her mind flying back to their conversation of a few moments ago.  “Not that I could have said anything else.  She’s a lovely girl, by all I’ve seen of her.”
“She is,” said Nancy with feeling.
“Quite young,” commented Hilary, raising one eyebrow.
“Twenty three.”
“Cradle snatcher!” Hilary ducked as Nancy grabbed the bag of flour.  “Put that down, you idiot!  I’m only teasing.”

She grinned at her friend again.  “I did wonder, you know.  All those eligible brothers and cousins that Ida and I introduced you to – not to mention all the nice doctors at the San - and never a flicker of interest.”
“What?!” Nancy spluttered in indignation.  “I suppose I couldn’t just have been committed to my job?”
“Oh, you’re a superb teacher, Nancy, everyone knows that.  Look how the girls enjoy your lessons, even when you’re teaching a vile subject like maths!” Hilary the mathematically un-inclined pulled a comical face at her chum.  “You’re one of the best teachers the school has ever had – I’ve heard Hilda and Nell say it a dozen times.”
Nancy flushed crimson.
“I love teaching.”
“Yes, quite.  But in all these years, I’ve never seen you even consider giving it up for a husband.  That’s quite unusual, you know.”
“Oh – well!” Nancy let it go.  “Do you mean to say, Hilary Graves, that you’ve thought for all this time that I might be interested in women?  Because you could have let me in on the secret!”
Hilary shot her a glance.  “Only just realised?”
“Yes!” Nancy was scarlet.  “I mean, no.  I’d never consciously been attracted to anyone, man or woman, before I met Kathie.”
“Well, in that case, it wouldn’t have helped much if I’d asked, would it?” Hilary smiled at her friend.  “I’m doubly glad for you, Nancy, if this is your first love.  It’s been a long time coming, but I’m sure it’s worth the wait.  Now,” she continued firmly, settling back in her chair.  “Why don’t you tell me more about her?”
Nancy smiled back, her eyes alight with pleasure.  “Well, Hil, if you insist….”

(I'm too soft-hearted for my own good  :P)

---
As the friends finished lunch, Hilary glanced soberly at Nancy.  She was, as she had made clear, pleased at her friend’s new-found happiness.  At the same time, she could imagine some of the difficulties that Nancy and Kathie would have to face.
“Nancy, have you told anyone else?” she asked abruptly.
Nancy shook her head.
“Are you going to?”
Her friend gave a sigh.  “Hil, I’d like to.  But I doubt that everyone would react as well as you have.”
Hilary caught the question in Nancy’s eyes.  “I think that’s right,” she said carefully.  “In fact, I can think of several people who would react pretty badly.”
“Mmm.”
“Which is not to say,” continued Hilary seriously, “That you shouldn’t think about telling other people.  You may find, after all, that your relationship with Kathie means more than those other friendships – or your career.”
Nancy shook her head again.  “I couldn’t put Kathie at risk.”
“She may want to make that decision herself.”
“True.  But how would we live, without work?  Financially or personally?  We’re teachers – and we love our jobs.”
“In that case, you’re going to have to be very careful.”
“I know.”  Nancy’s tones were sober, but she didn’t look unhappy.  “Hilary, to be honest, I don’t believe we expect anything else.  If we have even a few friends who accept us as we are, I think we’ll be content.”
Hilary nodded.  “Well, the two of you will always be welcome in my house” she said, decidedly.

There was a pause.  “Hil, may I ask something?” Nancy inquired.  “I did believe deep down that you’d stand by me, but I didn’t expect you to be so… so un-phased.”
Hilary looked at her with a nun-like expression of innocence, belied only by dancing eyes.  “Sorry, Nancy?”  She enjoyed watching her friend’s discomfort for a moment.  “Well, I did train at a women’s PT institute, you know” she relented at last.
Nancy rolled her eyes.  “Am I the only one who thought college was for studying?” she asked in mock outrage.  “Oh – don’t answer that!  I don’t want to know!”

“You’d better get going, Nancy” said Hilary, shortly after lunch was over.  “No, I don’t mean to be inhospitable.  But Kathie must be waiting for you – and this is your last full day in Geneva, isn’t it?”
“It is,” Nancy acknowledged.  “And I’m afraid she’ll be worrying too.  Oh, she didn’t say so, but I don’t think she slept much last night, wondering what you’d have to say.”
“The poor girl!” Hilary’s heart smote her.  “I wish she’d come with you.  No – wait!” She leapt to her feet.  “Don’t go anywhere just yet.  There’s something I want to give you.”  The former games mistress raced up the stairs.

“Here!” said Hilary, returning a couple of minutes later with a small box in her hand.  She paused to recover her breath.  “Give this to Kathie from me, please.”
“Why - what on earth is it?”
“Your Granny Wilmot gave me this pendant when Phil and I got engaged.”  Hilary opened the box to reveal a warm red gem-stone.  “It’s a ruby – the stone of love.”
“I can’t take that,” Nancy looked startled.
“It’s not for you – it’s for Kathie” said Hilary calmly.  She faced her friend squarely, and took a deep breath.  “Nancy, you won’t be able to tell many people about Kathie.  She might as well know that one of your friends accepts her, at least.”  She paused.  “I always felt at home with your family,” she continued gently, “and I think that Granny Wilmot would have wanted me to do this.  Tell Kathie I welcome her as a sister.”
Nancy looked at the stone, then at her friend, with tears in her eyes.
“Bless you, Hilary” she said softly.

The last installment!  After which I can reclaim my ordinary life, thank goodness ;)  (Sorry if it's schmultzy - I don't have a hard heart like some people on this board ;)).

---

“Penny for your thoughts, Nance?” Kathie smiled up at her friend as they stood beside the Paris train at Geneva’s Gare de Cornavin the next morning.
Nancy returned the smile.  “Do you recall when you last asked that?” she asked tenderly.
Kathie gave a nod, and slipped her hand into Nancy’s.  “The first day of our holiday,” she murmured.  “And you shook your head in reply.  But I think I got an answer anyway.”   There was no teasing in Kathie’s voice today, for her heart was full to overflowing.
Nancy squeezed her hand.  “I was thinking – then – how generous you were in your love.  You’d been talking about your family that day, remember.”  She glanced down at her friend. “And just now, I was thinking the same.  Except that you’re more generous than I could ever have imagined.”   She felt a lump in her throat.  “You will write, won’t you?”
“Of course,” said Kathie.  She looked up at her companion.  “I’ll write to Hilary as well, but please thank her from me, too.  Her approval meant a great deal.” She fingered the chain around her neck lightly.
They gazed at each other.
“It’s almost time, Kathie.”
The younger woman nodded.
“I’m going to miss you, Nancy.”

Nancy felt a tear trickle down her cheek, and brushed it impatiently away.  “It’s only until September” she said, making herself smile.  She stooped to kiss her companion.  “I love you, Kathie Ferrars” she said gently.
“I love you too, Nancy Wilmot.”

A whistle blew.  Nancy stepped back, while Kathie got into the train and settled in to her compartment.  The porters began slamming doors.  “Until September!” mouthed Kathie through the glass.  Nancy waved her handkerchief vigorously in farewell as the train pulled out of the platform.

Despite their sadness, both women were smiling as they left the station.

yes. I want to know what Joey will say- I can imagine her being one of the people who react badly, and also if N &K decide to keep it from the Heads- which would be perfectly understandable, given  the power held by those two- or alternatively to tell them on the basis that if *they* understand, no one else can say much..

What's wrong with a happy ending?  *grumbles*   I don't think I want to write any more.  It would only be interesting if there was pain & suffering (hmm, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that it's you who's asking, Lesley!).  And I just don't want to inflict that on Nancy & Kathie.  They don't deserve it :(

They wouldn't tell Jo, I'm sure of that.  And I think Hilda and Nell would figure it out but always leave it unspoken - "understanding glances" and so on.

*starting to panic at how this thread has taken over my life and wondering how on earth I'm going to write a serious paper for work by tomorrow morning when I'm playing football today, cooking dinner for friends and going out to the cinema this evening!*

OK, the next part is firmly tongue-in-cheek.  This is NOT what happens next - because Nancy & Kathie wouldn't be so foolish as to let it!

---

What did you say?” Jo swung round on Nancy.
“I – I - ” Nancy looked anxious.  “Joey, I’m telling you this because you’re so close to everyone at school.  If you accept us, then surely the others will.  Please say yes, Jo.  Kathie and I don’t want to live our lives in the shadows.”
“Well!” Jo’s voice crackled with indignation.  “So you don’t just want me to condone your behaviour, Nancy Wilmot, you want me to recommend it to the general public!”  Her face was a study in outrage.  “I’ve never heard anything so despicable in my life.”
“For goodness sake, Jo!” Nancy flushed darkly.  “What’s so bad about it?  I love Kathie, she loves me, how can that be a bad thing?”
“Don’t you speak of love!” said Jo scathingly.  “I know about love, and the forms it should take.  I care for my female friends, yes, but – but - ” she almost choked on the words, “but physical intimacy can only be between a man and a woman.  This – this feeling you have for Kathie – this lust – this carnal desire – it has nothing to do with real love, Nancy.”
“Carnal desire!” the maths mistress’s jaw dropped.  She could almost have laughed if the situation hadn’t been so grave.  “I like that, coming from you!  You’re the one with nine children.  No desire there, I suppose!”
Jo glared at her.  “Keep your filthy mind out of my business” she hissed.  “What you and Kathie are doing is blasphemy, Nancy,” she continued, venomously.  “What kind of example do you think you’ll set to the girls?  Teaching them that perversion is acceptable?”
Nancy felt her fists clenching, but kept them resolutely by her side.  “We’re excellent teachers, Jo.  You’ve said so yourself.”
“That was before I knew – this!”
“For crying out loud, do you honestly think we’d recommend our lifestyle to the girls?” demanded Nancy.  “It’s not exactly an easy path, Jo, as you’re helping to prove.”  She took a deep breath.  “OK, I can see you disapprove of our relationship.”
“‘Disapprove’ is an understatement” glowered Jo.
“But please” Nancy forced herself to speak calmly, knowing that her future could depend on Jo’s decision, “May I ask you to keep your knowledge of it private?  Kathie and I have no plans to tell everyone – we just want to keep doing our jobs.  Please Jo, for the sake of whatever friendship we’ve had.”
“Never!” Jo spat.  “By the time I’ve finished with you and that woman of yours, you’ll never teach again!”

This is fantastic Catherine and I did like the Joey bit at the end - uncomfortably true to life, I fear!

Seriously though, you can't leave it so soon with Hilary being so supportive - I don't "want" to see them go through loads of heartache etc but I think it would be really interesting and so enlightening to see how everyone deals with it.

I'm intrigued that it is Joey (no experience of the real world outside the CS and the San) who struggles to embrace anything that's outside her own realm of experience - shame they didn't pack her off to college or a proper job before she got married (i.e. not writing where you don't get to meet any real people or situations!) so that she could learn to put her money where her mouth is when it comes to tolerance!

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Sarah_L on Oct 28th, 2003, 2:08am
Reading Joey's reaction made me realise just how sheltered and narrow her life is. As a teenager, she was at the CS and in the holidays she was in a sense still at the school. When she left school, all she did was go up to the Sonnalpe and even then she was forever back at school. She didn't go away to college to get any experience of the outside world. She marries someone who has connections with the CS and shares its morals. As a married woman, her life still revolves around the school. All her friends are linked with the school and with her girls going there, that's another link. It might be expected that her boys would bring in the perspective of the outside world, but 11 children and her writing means she won't get much chance to really talk to them. Being in a small, sheltered community in Switzerland means she probably won't get influenced by the progressive liberalisation of British society in the 1950s and 1960s. It's therefore not at all surprising that she wouldn't be able to accept anything even slightly out of the ordinary.

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Carolyn P on Oct 28th, 2003, 2:15am
That is so right. And yet she would disagree, sayingthsat she was tolerant and that the girls kept her to date. I think people like Joey only see what they want to. Don't forget too, that at this point everything has always worked out for her. The only blip in her life was the exile, and even then she didn't loose family or her closest friends. I think that she would become more and more insular the older she got, without ever realising it.

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Sarah_L on Oct 28th, 2003, 2:18am
And even saying her girls kept her up to date begs the question of how up to date her girls were. Until they go to uni, their lives are just as sheltered as Joey's.

I think most people do as they get older. They learn how to avoid things that conflict with their views and concentrate on the things they know and approve of, which is why, for instance, it's younger people who are involved in the latest drug or alcoholic beverage and why it's the older people who jump up and down about them. I suppose it has to do with a person's comfort zone.

“Evening, all!” Nancy Wilmot strolled into the staff room where her fellow mistresses were relaxing.  “Glad to be back for a new year?”
“Rather!” Peggy Burnett looked up.  “Holidays are frightfully jolly, but it’s nice to be at the Platz again – feels like home, you know.”
“How was your own summer, Nancy?” asked Ruth Derwent, the school’s Senior Mistress.
“Not bad at all” returned Nancy with a smile.  “Kathie and I had a week in Geneva in July, and after that I stayed with Hilary Burn – Graves, I mean – for the rest of the hols.  She had a lot on her hands with her new arrival, so I offered to help out.”  Her eyes twinkled.  “Lois has grown at a rate of knots - you’ll all see quite a change.”  She settled down comfily into an armchair.
“How is Hilary herself?” inquired Jeanne de Lachenais, an old friend of that lady.
“Fit as a fiddle.  She’ll be coming down to visit us all next weekend.”  Nancy gave a yawn.  “Gosh, I am tired – and I haven’t even made the journey from England today!  You lot who came with the trains must be exhausted.”
“We are – at least I certainly am,” said Ruth Derwent, who had headed the party.  “That landslide was the last thing we needed.  Oh, the girls didn’t take it too badly over all, but some of them did grumble.  And Sharlie nearly got left behind at Solothurn when she went to call the school.”  The head of English nodded over at little Miss Andrews, who was sitting in the corner with Kathie Ferrars, exchanging tales from the holidays.
Nancy smiled at the two youngest members of staff.  “It sounds like a good time was had by all.”
“Oh, we’ve lived to tell the tale, at least!” Kathie laughed.  “I say, Nancy, did you order those new maths textbooks for Upper IV that you mentioned last term?” she raised an eyebrow at her friend.
“Yes, they’re in the stockroom” the head of maths assented.  “Do you want to take a look?”  She ignored the groans from the games mistress, who was sitting beside her.  “There’s no time like the present.  Rosalie, may we borrow the key?”
“Of course.  Just leave it on my desk when you’re finished – I won’t be needing it tonight” the school secretary agreed easily.
“Excellent.  Well, are you coming then, Kathie?”

Well, seeing as you put that so nicely, Vikki, I'll give you a teeny extra snippet... :)

---

The mistresses walked sedately down the corridor.
“It’s nice to see you, old thing” Nancy smiled at her friend.
“And you,” Kathie’s tone was light.  No one could have guessed that she had looked forward to this moment for months.
“I hear you’ll be form mistress for Vb this year,” her friend remarked.  “Are you looking forward to it?”
“Yes, I think so.” Kathie shot her a smile.  “I’d probably have been scared stiff last year, having a proper senior form, but I’m ready for them now.  And most are old friends from Inter V, of course.”
Nancy glanced at her junior.  “You’ve nothing to be scared of, you did jolly well with them last year.  The Heads wouldn’t have asked you to continue as their form mistress if they hadn’t thought so, after all.”
They came to the stockroom.
“Right then – let’s take a look at that textbook,” Nancy opened the door.

“Nancy – oh, Nancy!” Kathie Ferrars entwined her arms around her friend’s neck.  “How I’ve missed you, my love.”
“And I you.”  Her partner spoke softly, though she had locked the door behind them.
There was a moment’s delicious silence.  Then,
“Thank you for your letters,” Kathie murmured.
Nancy smiled.  “I would have written every day, if I hadn’t thought your Uncle and Aunt would find it odd,” she said honestly.
“Once a week was good enough,” Kathie returned the look.
The lovers gazed at each other contentedly.
“It’s so nice to be where you are!”  said Nancy, with more feeling than eloquence.

The rapturous reunion continued for some minutes.  Then Kathie looked up at her friend with teasing eyes.
“So you missed me, did you?”
“Didn’t I say that already?” her partner smiled.
“Oh, yes,” the younger woman continued innocently.  “Only, when you came into the staffroom and paid so much attention to Ruth and Peggy, I thought perhaps you’d changed your mind.”
“What?!” Nancy squeaked with indignation.
“Oh, I suppose it would have been a bit infra dig to greet the Staff Baby first.  All the same…” Kathie left the sentence dangling.

Nancy glared at her junior for a second.  Then she dissolved into giggles.  “You be careful, Kathie Ferrars.  I’ll make you read that maths textbook yet!”

Oh so do I (hope there's more)

I can't help feeling though, that some of the more observant staff would notice a difference in the two of them,  a general radiance(?), I just hope they feel happy for them, and refrain from gossiping.

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Esmeralda on Oct 30th, 2003, 2:01am
You're probably right - I don't suppose people would think about the two of them in that way in those days - I was thinking if they were working for my firm, today, there would certainly be a few suspicions.

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Lesley on Oct 30th, 2003, 6:17am
I think even then it might have been noticed by some - we all feel that it's perfectly possible - but just how content are they to just snatch stolen moments in the stock room during term time?

Lots more please Catherine - and are you going to have a scene or two with Hilda and Nell after all? ;)

Title: Re: An Alternative Romance (continued)
Post by Rachael P on Oct 30th, 2003, 9:25am
Brilliant - so believable!

Love the scene in the stock room! The beauty of this story will be the frustration of N&K as to whether to confide in anyone (I agree that they're going to need more than stolen moments - wonder how close their rooms are to each other?) and whether anyone else finds out and how they react

Great stuff!!

More please x infinity

I think Hilda and Nell would understand. I certainly don't think they have a relationship anything like that between Nancy and Kathie, but they do have a very close, dependent friendship which might have developed into something more had they been younger. I also don't think they'd speak about Kathie and Nancy, I think they'd realise there was something going on and as long as Kathie and Nancy remained discrete, there'd be no need to mention it.

Back at the keyboard... here's tonight's first installment...
---

Kathie laughed softly at Nancy’s rejoinder.  Then she smiled at her friend with just a hint of regret.
“We’d better be going, my love.  People would start wondering if they found us spending hours in here.”
Nancy nodded reluctantly.  “Oh, I suppose you’re right.”  She glanced around their surroundings, noticing the piles of school texts and exercise books for the first time.  “It isn’t the most romantic place, anyway!”
Kathie saw the look, and placed her hands on her friend’s shoulders.  “Chin up, Nancy,” she said steadily.  “We knew it wouldn’t be easy to find time to ourselves during term.”
The taller woman flushed slightly.  “I’m not complaining, Kathie, truly.  It’s just – well, it’s been so long since we’ve been together.  You must admit that it would be nice to have more than a few snatched moments alone.”
“Mmm.”  Her partner didn’t answer in words, but her response was proof enough that she agreed.  Then she held out her hand gently.  “Come on, beloved.  It’s time to go.”

The two friends left the stockroom and strolled down the corridor.  Despite it being the first day of term, the school was perfectly quiet; the girls had gone to bed straight after Prayers, and many of the staff had followed shortly afterwards.  Nancy and Kathie knew that there would be few people left in the staffroom by now to wonder where they were.

A couple of yards before the turning to the staff quarters, they heard gentle footsteps approaching from the opposite direction.
“Good evening, ladies,” Miss Annersley greeted them both, before turning to her youngest mistress with a warm smile.  “I hoped I’d find you here, Kathie, so I could welcome you back personally.  Did you have a good holiday, my dear?”
“Yes, thank you, Miss Annersley,” Kathie’s reply was very proper.  She still stood in considerable awe of the Chalet School’s distinguished headmistress.  “It’s delightful to be back, though.”
“I’m glad to hear it!” the Head flashed her another smile.  “Were you in England all summer?”
“Yes, with my aunt and uncle.  It was lovely to be at home – and to see all my friends from school and college,” Kathie replied happily.  Then she gave a sudden blush.  “But I haven’t forgotten all my languages.  I did try to keep up by reading some French and German literature - Jeanne gave me a list last term!”
Miss Annersley’s laughter pealed out.  “In that case, I’m sure you’re ready for the new year.  I hope you’re planning to enjoy it, by the way.  Your form will be one of the nicest collections of girls in the school, I think.”  She caught Nancy’s movement of protest, and added with a twinkle in her eye, “Oh, Va are a pleasant enough set, too.”  She smiled at the mistress of that elevated form.  “Well, I shan’t hold you up any further, my dears.  It’s been a tiring day – I’m sure you’re ready to sleep.”
“Yes, Miss Annersley,” Kathie suppressed a yawn with difficulty.   “Thank you for the welcome, though.  It’s very kind of you to come looking for me.”
“It’s my pleasure,” the Head looked at her in some amusement.  “No, not another word.  Off to bed you go!”
Kathie gave a faint chuckle, but turned obediently.  “Good night, Miss Annersley.”
“Good night!” the reply floated back.

Your wish is my command :)

Btw I'm going away for the weekend - so while chants of 'more' may encourage me for future postings, there probably won't be anything until Sunday.  Sorry!  Have a nice weekend, all.

---
Thanks to the brief meeting with the Head, the two friends went to their separate rooms without any regret that evening.  In the week that followed, too, both women were so busy with the commencement of the new school year that they had little time to miss one another’s company.  Kathie’s mind was filled with the doings of Vb, and some concern for the new girls Richenda Fry and Odette Mercier, both of whom seemed to be having difficulties adapting to their new environment.  Nancy had fewer troubles with her grown up charges in Va, but her responsibilities as head of maths took up a great deal of time.  Consequently it wasn’t until Thursday evening, when Nancy stole away to Kathie’s room to pay a quiet visit, that the couple had time to reflect properly on arrangements.

“How’s the week been for you, Kathie?”
“Good – mostly.  Vb have been giving me some headaches, but I think we’ll pull through,” Kathie looked a little tired.
“What exactly’s the problem?”
“Well, that’s just it.  I can’t quite put my finger on it.”  She mused.  “It’s not the old girls - they’re mostly familiar faces from last year’s Inter V.  Oh, I know Len and Con are missing their third triplet, but they do see her out of lessons.  And they’ve been in separate forms before, I believe.”
Nancy nodded.
“But the new girls are a rummy bunch.  There are such heaps of them – and mostly Continental.  Only Joan Dancey and Richenda Fry are from England, but there are three Swiss girls, Jeanne Daudet from Bordeaux, and Carlotta Kieffen, and…” Kathie was counting on her fingers, “… oh, and Odette Mercier, of course, who always looks like a wet rag.”  She gave a slight frown.  “I’m not sure whether I should interfere, or just give them some space to settle down.”
Nancy smiled at her sympathetically.  “Poor old girl!  But it’s early days yet.  I’d give them another week or two – most of the tensions will work themselves out – and then you’ll have a better idea of what’s going on, anyway.”
“I suppose so.”  The anxious look was fading gradually from Kathie’s eyes.
“Oh, come here, silly!” Nancy motioned to her friend.
Kathie gave a faint laugh and plumped down at the foot of Nancy’s armchair as indicated.
“Here – let me take away some of that stress,” her companion massaged Kathie’s shoulders gently.  “You shouldn’t worry so much.  Everything’s going to be fine.”
“Mmmmm,” the younger woman started to relax.  “That feels nice, Nancy.”  She looked back at her partner gratefully after a minute or two.  “You’re a very good influence, my dear.”
Nancy laughed softly.  “I know I am!” she said.
