Look at this - no chants of 'more'!  Am I to assume that the intricate plan that I came up with on the bus this weekend is unwanted?   ;)

Ah well, since you put it so nicely ;) ;)

---

A few minutes later, Kathie gave an ostentatious yawn.   “Aren’t you tired, Nancy?”
“Sorry?” Her partner looked surprised.  She had only been in Kathie’s room for half an hour.  “Why – are you trying to get rid of me?”
“No-o,” Kathie stood up and turned to her companion.  “I was just wondering whether it wasn’t time for bed, actually.”  She laced her fingers seductively through Nancy’s.
“Kathie!”  Her friend’s eyes widened.
“Don’t you want to, darling?”  Kathie tugged gently at her partner’s hands.
“We can’t – not here,” protested Nancy, allowing herself to be pulled to her feet nonetheless.  “What if someone caught us?”
“They wouldn’t,” the younger woman said in cajoling tones.  “Come on, sweetheart.  Let me show you how much I’ve missed you…”

Knock, knock!  The two women leapt apart as someone tapped at the door.
Sit down!” Kathie mouthed urgently at her friend.  She turned hastily away to the mini stove that graced her room, her heart pounding.  “Come in!” she called, making her voice as casual as possible.
“Hello!” Sharlie Andrews’ head appeared around the door.  “Oh – sorry.  I didn’t realise you had company,” she added, spotting Nancy in her armchair.
“Not at all,” Kathie gave her a welcoming smile.  “Do come in, Sharlie.  I’m just making cocoa – you’ll have some, won’t you?”
“No thanks, Kathie.  Actually I just wanted to borrow some milk,” replied jolly Miss Andrews.
“Sure?  Oh well, here’s the milk, then.”  Kathie handed over a small jug of Long Life.  “Is that enough?”
“Quite.  Thanks!  I’ll return the jug in the morning,” Sharlie smiled gratefully.  “Good night, Kathie – Nancy.”
“Good night!”

The friends held their breath for a few moments as Sharlie’s footsteps retreated down the corridor.
“Phew!” said Nancy at length.  “That was a close shave, my dear.”
Kathie wasn’t listening.  “It’s just as well Sharlie didn’t want any cocoa.”  She started to giggle.  “I don’t have any!”

some light relief for anyone who still has energy to read, this evening!

---

On Saturday afternoon, as promised, Hilary Graves came to display her newest daughter to the staff.  For many of the mistresses this was their first glimpse of Lois, and the staffroom rang with exclamations of delight as they worshipped the school’s latest “granddaughter”.

“What a darling!” Davida Armitage, one of those who had not seen the latest arrival before, rocked the baby gently.
“But Hilary, how she is like you!” Jeanne de Lachenais remarked with a smile.  “She hardly resembles her father at all.”
The proud mother nodded in satisfaction, then laughed.  “Just as well, really.  Marjorie is all Phil.”
“How quickly she’s growing,” commented Nancy, who had seen Lois just the week before, but could still marvel at her goddaughter’s progress.
“Isn’t she?  But don’t you hog her,” Hilary added as an afterthought.  “You haven’t forgotten that you’re coming to visit me this weekend, I hope?”
“Wh – oh, of course not,” Nancy agreed meekly, as she felt a surreptitious kick on her ankle.  “All right, Jeanne, she’s yours for the moment.”
The staffroom was in pleasing disarray as the usually stately mistresses crowded round and cooed at the recent addition.

In the midst of all the excitement, Hilary put a hand on Kathie’s arm and drew the younger woman aside for a private word.
“How is life treating you this term?” she asked quietly.
“Very well, thanks,” Kathie answered with a smile.  She looked gratefully at the woman who had proven herself such a true friend.  “Hilary, I’ve thanked you already for all you’ve done, but I’ll say it again.  Your support has made all the difference to us – truly it has.”
“Glad to hear it,” said Hilary in matter-of-a-fact tones.  Then she smiled gently at the young mistress.  “But there’s no need to thank me.  I can see how happy you’ve made Nancy.”
Her listener blushed.  “I do try,” she murmured.
“Well, it’s evidently working!” Hilary gave her a grin.  Then she raised her voice.  “I say, Kathie, you’ll come back with me and Nancy this evening, won’t you?”

Kathie’s eyes widened at this very public question.  The former games mistress had a clear voice and several heads had turned towards them.
“Sorry, Hilary…?” she stammered.  This wasn’t the kind of discretion she had expected from Nancy’s oldest friend!

Well... all right then.

Actually I don't even need Lesley's imagination to spur me to bleak thoughts concerning this thread.  News reports of what's happening in the Anglican church are quite "inspiring" enough :(  I know people have strong beliefs about what's moral & immoral, and respect that, but statements like "The Devil has clearly entered the Church" (to quote the head of the church in Kenya) are just.... upsetting.  Hey ho.  Uganda has cut off ties with the New Hampshire diocese because of its "immorality"...  I'm going to Uganda next week... wonder why I'm not feeling particularly cheerful?

Anyway the upshot of all this is that you can expect PAIN and SUFFERING at some point in this story!!!!!!

It's amazing what 'conscience' can do, isn't it?  I'm going to be interested to see the developments in the proposed union between the Anglicans and Methodists!  Especially as, from what I've read, there are Anglican clergy who don't recognise the ordination of Methodist clergy!   ::)  Also, we have women in the equivalent post of Bishop!!   :o, and have had a female head of the Church, even worse!!!

OK - no more diatribes (yet) - here's some nice, happy story instead.  The P&S will come later.

---

Hilary grinned broadly at the younger woman’s confusion.
“We-ll…” she drawled.  Then, seeing the panic rising in Kathie’s eyes, she relented.  “You remember that you commissioned Phil to find you a car this summer?  Well, he’s got one – just what you wanted, a Morris Minor – and he drove it up to the Platz yesterday.  It’s at our house, waiting for its new owner.”
“Hilary!  You angel!” Kathie gave a squeal and threw her arms around the deliverer of this news.
“It’s had one owner before, but the condition’s good – it’s just a couple of years old.  Phil says it handles pretty well.”  Hilary laughed at her junior, who had started dancing a jig of delight on the staffroom carpet.  “You’ll come back and collect it this evening, I take it?”
“Won’t I?” Kathie jumped up and down in glee.  Then she steadied herself.  “That is, if I can be excused from duties for once.  I’ll have to ask Miss Annersley.”
“Oh, I’m sure you can,” a dry voice came from the door.  “The question is - ”
“May you!” chorused Hilary, Peggy and Biddy.  As old girls of the school they had heard the Abbess on that particular subject many times before.  Each dissolved into giggles at the sight of Kathie’s face.
“Don’t worry about that,” said Hilary, choking back her mirth eventually.  “It’s just a red rag to a bull for the Abbess.  But she’ll let you come – won’t you, Hilda?”
The headmistress laughed at the imploring eyes which turned towards her.  “Oh, of course.”  She smiled at the junior geography mistress.  “I don’t suppose you’d be able to concentrate on your work anyway, would you, my dear?”
“Probably not!” Kathie acknowledged honestly.  “Thank you Miss Annersley.”

Carolyn, go for it.  I'm not immune to reasoned discussion (if "sticking your head above the parapet" means defending the position of the conservative part of the Anglican church).  But note - anything that gets said here may be used against Nancy & Kathie later!  ;)

---

The evening at Sonnenhofen passed in a whirl of merriment and laughter.  Kathie’s new runabout was admired from every angle, and the proud new owner demonstrated her driving prowess by chauffeuring her friends around the Platz, much to their delight.  By the time they had returned to the Graves’ pretty chalet, the light was already growing dim.

“Right, you two,” announced Hilary firmly, once dinner was finished.  “You’re both staying here tonight.”  She ignored their murmurs of protest, and picked up the receiver from the telephone set.  “Hello, Rosalie?  Yes, it’s Hilary here.  Just letting you know that I’m keeping Nancy and Kathie for the night.  Phil’s still at the San, and it’s much too dark for them to drive back themselves - Kathie isn’t awfully confident in her new car yet,” she ignored the fearful grimace cast at her by that young woman.  “Is that OK?  Good.  Thanks, Rosalie.”  She turned back to her friends.  “Well, that’s all settled.”

Nancy gazed at her old school chum admiringly.  “What a brain!”
Kathie snorted.  “What a slur on my driving!” she commented wryly.  “Oh, all right, Hilary.  You know I appreciate it really.”
Hilary took a bow.  “Any time.”  She regarded them teasingly for a moment.  “Well, my dears,” she said at length, “I’m sure you’ve had a very exciting day.  It’s probably time for bed, wouldn’t you say?”
“Oh, quite,” said Nancy.
“It has been a very long week,” said Kathie, fighting to keep a straight face, but failing miserably.  She collapsed in youthful laughter.
“Good!  Well, your rooms are upstairs, to the right.  There's a connecting bathroom in between - I don't think that will be a problem, will it?" Hilary gave her companions a wink, and nodded them towards the salon door. “Be off with you then.  I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Sleep well -”
“Goodnight -”
The friends disappeared happily up the stairs

Wonderful Hilary. Isn't she a dear.

Defending conservative anglicanism, Hmmm, bit difficult as I'm not anglican. However I think that a vital part of being Christian is to accept and follow Biblical teaching, whether it is easy and likeable or not. The Bible teaching on sexual partners is very clear, not only in specific verses but in general teaching on sex as well. I find it difficult to say, be a Christian but ignore the Bible, it just doesn't work that way. Having said that, it is no worse at all to be a practising homosexual/lesbian than it is to be angry with someone, take God's name in vain, be greedy, or any other sin. I don't see sin as being in degrees, so wouldn't think any worse of someone because of who they slept with because we all sin. As christians we repent, receive forgiveness through grace. Repentance implies a truning around, so we can't activly persue a life that carries on sinning. Instead we activly persue God. This may mean being celibate, but the same applies to anyone who is not married, regardless of their sexual inclinations. It sounds harsh I know, but whilst God is a God of love, he is also perfect and just. I believe that he loves us dearly, that is what Jesus is all about. The heart of the gospel is God's love, but that doesn't mean we can do what we want.
The trite phrase used often is 'love you, not your actions.' I don't like that, but it is a simplistic summing up of a Christian position.

In the position in the story I would say that whilst I disagrred with what Nancy and Kathie were doing, it was none of my busines and in the end between them and God. Friends are friends regardless of who sleeps with who, (or rather doesn't sleep!) and I can't see why it should make a difference to liking them, spending time with them, or to them doing a good job.

The problem in the anglican church at the moment is appointing leaders within the church who do not accept Biblical teaching, Ho, Hum.

Hope this is clear, and that I havn't upset anyone. I'm happy to be flamed, or to defend my position further if need be, here or via PM.

All right, all right, Rachael - no more teasing ;)

Carolyn, thanks for the thoughtful contribution to the discussion.  I'm not Christian, and don't read the Bible as much as I should, so won't argue over what scripture says.  I have gay Christian friends who believe that a liberal position can be theologically consistent... but then again, I know that many people disagree...

Maybe I'll let Kathie & Nancy discuss it later ;)  (Actually I don't think I have much choice in the matter - they're dictating the story at the moment!)

---

It was just as well for Kathie and Nancy that they did have that evening together, for the following days were so busy that they hardly had time to meet, let alone relax in one another’s company.  Both women had always played an active role in the school’s extra-curricular endeavours, and to stop doing so would have aroused considerable surprise.  Moreover, both derived great pleasure from being involved with the girls’ out-of-class activities, and neither would have wished to spend less time with their charges.

One evening towards the end of the second week, Kathie slipped into Nancy’s bedroom for a late-night chat.  She tried to put on a cheery smile, but for once her acting skills let her down, and her friend could see her weary demeanour.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Nancy looked at her partner in concern.  “You look frazzled.”
“And how!”  Kathie slumped into a chair, and sighed.  “I’m sorry, Nancy.  I don’t want to come here and complain – we see little enough of one another as it is.”  She paused.  “It’s just – I feel so worn out – and it’s only the second week of term.”
“You poor thing!” Her companion was all sympathy.  Then a flicker of anxiety passed across her face.  “Kathie, is it school?  Or is worrying about - us, that’s wearing you out?”
Kathie gave a shrug.  “School, mostly.”  She saw the pain in her partner’s eyes, and regretted her thoughtless words.  “No, it’s all school.  I didn’t mean it like that, Nancy, forgive me.”  She gave herself a little shake.  “The tiredness is because of work – the grumpiness is just because we have so little time together.”
Her friend nodded slightly.  “Want to talk about it?  The work, I mean.”
“Don’t know if it would help.”  Kathie tucked her knees up under herself in the armchair.  She sighed again.  “I suppose, Nancy, that I expected this year to be easier.  Because of having the extra experience.  But to be honest, sometimes I feel just as new and stressed as I did last September.”  She gave a shaky laugh.  “I have no idea how you manage to be so calm and unruffled all the time!”
“Oh, sweetheart.”  The voice was comforting, “We all find it stressful sometimes, believe me.”
“It doesn’t look like it!”  Kathie bit her lip.  “When you’re teaching you seem so – so in control.  Like the Abbess, Nancy.”
Her companion chuckled.  “What a compliment!  My dear, the Abbess had her air of authority when I was still a naughty Middle.”
“But you have it now,” persisted Kathie.
“No,” Nancy shook her head decisively.  “I don’t have her dignity, or leadership – nor would I aspire to.”  She paused.  “I just enjoy teaching, Kathie.  Anything else just comes from that.”

There was a silence, during which Kathie still looked troubled.  Her partner eyed her thoughtfully, but refrained from forcing the issue.  At length, the younger woman looked up.
“May I ask you something, Nancy?” she hesitated.  “It’s something that – that troubled me all last year, really – but I didn’t know how to ask.”
“Go ahead,” her friend’s voice was reassuring.
“Well, it’s this…”

I hope I don't get lynched for this post!
It's dedicated to Cumbrian Rachel, and Rebecca, and all our fellow mathematicians on the board  ;D

---

“… How do you manage to make maths fun?” the junior mistress blurted out.  She took a deep breath and plunged on.  “Today, for instance, I was introducing algebra to Lower IVa.  They’re all perfectly nice girls, and some of them are really good at maths – Tessa de Bersac, for one – but there just wasn’t any real pleasure in the lesson.  I know they like me, and when I take them for geography there’s always a buzz – but I can’t make it happen for maths.  What should I do?”  She looked relieved to have got this worry off her chest at last.

The head of maths nodded slowly.  “It’s always the challenge,” she said.  “But I do think it’s possible.”  She meditated for a moment.  “Tell me, Kathie – when you said there was no pleasure in the lesson – was that on your side, or theirs?”
“Both, I suppose,” her colleague admitted.  “I do prepare conscientiously for my lessons, honestly I do, but I just can’t see how to make them entertaining.  Algebra is so dull – especially at such a basic level.”
Nancy leant forward eagerly.  “Oh, but it doesn’t have to be!  There are so many ways of approaching it that can breathe life into the subject.”  She deliberated for a second.  “For one thing, algebra is amazingly useful.  Even though it seems dry and dusty to begin with, just think how many applications it has.  All of the natural sciences rely on it these days for their models.  I’m sure it’s even starting to be true in geography – it certainly is in physics and chemistry.  And engineering.”
Kathie nodded.
“Of course, you can’t teach thirteen year olds the models themselves,” smiled her friend, “but you can explain that they exist, in many fields, and that they relate to the real world.  And you can give some simple examples, of course.  It gives the pupils some idea of why they’re learning the basic techniques, which can make all the difference.”
“Ye-es,” said Kathie thoughtfully.  “I suppose there are applications.  Especially in the sciences.  But, let’s face it, Nancy, there aren’t many girls here who are really passionate about physics or engineering.  The school is so focused on arts subjects.”
Her companion laughed.  “I wouldn’t let Nell or Davida hear you say that.  They certainly wouldn’t agree – we have turned out several good scientists, you know.  Oh, I know more girls lean towards languages and humanities.  It’s the ridiculous belief that science is ‘unfeminine’ that does it, I think.”  She snorted.  “Anyway, that’s for another day – although I would say that inspiring girls in maths classes is a necessary part of that struggle.”  She paused.  “Well, anyway.  Let’s admit that some of the girls are uninterested by science, and would rather learn about history.  Doesn’t maths have a history?”
Her listener looked completely blank.  “Sorry?”
“Kathie Ferrars!  Don’t you know when algebra was first introduced?” the head of maths demanded with a twinkle in her eye.  “No?  Well, the Ancient Greeks had ways of solving equations to find unknown numbers – an early precursor of algebra, if you like.  But the word we use today comes from the Arabic, al-jabr, ‘to balance’.  It was an Arab astronomer in the ninth century who developed – possibly with some inspiration from Indian mathematical traditions – much of the algebra we teach today.”
“Oh!” Kathie woke up at this.  “I didn’t know that algebra came from the Middle East.”
“Quite,” said Nancy with a grin.  “And your pupils probably don’t, either.”

The younger woman started to laugh.  “You are passionate about this, aren’t you?”
“Absolutely!” the reply was earnest.  “You see, Kathie, maths is a – a way of thinking.  A tremendously exciting and useful one.  But you have to catch your pupils’ attention first, by fair means or foul,” she smiled, “otherwise they’ll never make the effort to explore that way of thinking.  And that would be a terrible shame.”
“Hmm.”  Kathie’s face had brightened during this conversation.  “I suppose you’re right.”  She returned her partner’s smile.  “Thanks Nancy – I’ll give it a try!”

I don't think that was quite the 'more' we've been asking for. Interesting, yes, informative, certainly, but not quite what we were all expecting.

Have you been taking teasing lessons?

"science is unfeminine"
I've had to read about this (at first unwillingly, but with more interest than I expected for my 'real' work) and apparently until the professionalisation  of science as a discipline in the 19th century, much of what we now think of as being science was seen as being peculiarly suited to woman's intellect- the theory being that it related to cooking(!) Also because prior to the last 200 years, it was only the Classics that had any real academic clout, and while there were some women who became excellent classicists, most found this conventional field of learning barred to them. So women who were avid about knowledge turned elsewhere- to science!
The women's education movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries focused on giving women access to the Arts and Classics- the areas they had been forbidden before. Women wanted to be accepted on the same intellectual level as men, and to do so they believed they had to compete in the same arena. Thus science fell out of favour, and then when the discipline became increasingly professionalised and formalised, the idea that it was 'unfeminine' to do science arose, and even today, many girls prefer to drop it at the earliest available opportunity.

Whew. Impressed with how much of that I've remembered!

A lot of the mathematical breakthroughs of the 18thc were by women because that was one of the areas in which they could work due to the social and educational restrictions at that time.

Ezackly, although I don't know so much about the maths side of it. The book was a laugh, by the way. The author kept a very distinct, ironic edge on everything she wrote, and I ended up giggling a few times. Read it? It's Patricia Phillips, The scientific lady: a social history of woman's scientific interests, 1520-1918 (London, 1990). All nicely referenced as per the Irish Historical Studies Rules! ;)

Nancy would have loved my grade 9 math teacher.  Every so often, in the middle of teaching us something he would say "culture corner" and teach us about the history of the person who first came up with the theorem (or whatever) or something about that time period or something like that.  Even those who weren't into math loved his classes.

I'm really enjoying this, Catherine - it's interesting to see the staffroom perspective, or rather the perspective of Kathie and Nancy, and to see them being developed so sensitively as people.

And thank you Carolyn for your thoughtful perspective - it's nice to hear a considered opinion rather than a rant!  It surprises me that some Christians seem to think that abuse and intolerant rage are somehow perfectly justified in this situation.

OK - no maths in this snippet - but no romance either ;)

---
Thanks to Nancy’s words of wisdom, Kathie found her teaching duties considerably less arduous over the next week – at least as far as maths was concerned.  The new girls in Vb were still giving her some pause for thought, however.  Odette Mercier still had a look of perpetual misery, while Richenda Fry – despite chumming up with the two Maynard triplets in her form – was prone to brooding fits.  Kathie did her best to reassure the French girl, realising that she was hopelessly homesick, but gentle hints and a somewhat blunter interview went unrewarded.  Events reached a climax on the second Sunday of term, when Odette was found sobbing her heart out in Vb’s form room.  Inevitably, the matter went straight to Matron, who did not spare Kathie her unvarnished thoughts on the responsibilities of a form mistress.

“Didn’t you notice that Odette was making herself ill?” demanded the school’s domestic tyrant irascibly.
“I – I’m sorry, Matron,” Kathie looked dismayed.  “I did see that she was unhappy, of course.  But I tried talking to her, and she simply wouldn’t cheer up - I couldn’t think what else to do.”
Matron eyed the youngest member of staff balefully.  “The girl was off her food and perfectly miserable.  If you were unable to resolve matters yourself, Kathleen, then you should have reported the matter to me, or to the Head.”
Her listener flushed at the unaccustomed sound of her full name.  “I am sorry,” she murmured again.
“Well,” that lady paused.  “Please remember your responsibilities, in future, and don’t let it get to this stage again.  Do I make myself clear?”

"Of course, I looked suitably chastised," Kathie fumed to her partner later that evening.  “But I hardly think that reporting the girl to Matron would have done any good.  If I was homesick, she’d be the last person I’d want to see!”
Nancy laughed sympathetically.  “Poor old thing!  But at least it’s out of your hands, now.”
“Well, I’m not even sure about that,” said her friend shortly.  “Matey gave the girl a glass of hot milk, presumably with ‘a little something’ slipped into it, but that won’t take away the misery for more than a night.”  She frowned.  “And I have an interview with the Abbess tomorrow morning to discuss the situation.  Just what I needed.”
“Hilda won’t give you a hard time,” Nancy said with certainty.
“Humph!” Kathie was too cross for reassurances.  “Unless she's had Matey bending her ear already, that is.”  She stood up abruptly.  “Sorry, Nancy, I’m just not in the mood for chatting.  I’ll see you tomorrow.”  She left her friend’s room with a bang of the door.

OK - I've done my best - and saints can't do better!

Miss Annersley was indeed much more sympathetic than Kathie had anticipated.  Having established that Vb’s form mistress had done her best to break through Odette’s unhappiness, she smiled compassionately at her youngest member of staff.
“It sounds as though you did everything you could, Kathie.”
“Th-thank you, Miss Annersley,” that young woman stammered in some relief.  “I’m afraid I ought to have told you or Matron, though, before this happened.”
The Head looked at her meditatively.  “We might have been able to help.  But you are closest to your pupils, my dear – both in age and as their form mistress,” she added with a slight smile.  “In this case, I rather suspect that if you could not make the breakthrough, then we should not have done so either.”
Her listener turned pink.  “That’s very kind of you, Miss Annersley.”
“Not at all.  I have great confidence in you, my dear.”  The reply was gentle.

Kathie felt a lump rising in her throat.  “I- I’m not sure it’s deserved.  I thought this year would be easier, but – but –” she trailed off.
“Teaching is rarely easy, Kathie,” the Head said, her voice very kind.  “Even when we know our subjects, we still have to deal with our pupils – and our colleagues.”
“Yes,” in a whisper.
“Learning to deal with human beings is harder than mastering an academic subject.  But it is also, I believe, much more rewarding.”  Miss Annersley smiled at the woman before her.  “When I expressed my confidence in you, my dear, I was not thinking of your accomplishments as a geographer or a mathematician, plentiful though they are.  I was thinking of your personal talents – your ability to relate to your pupils, and to win their trust.  And your capacity, which I believe is a great one, for friendship.” She paused.  “You are already endowed with many fine qualities, Kathie.  They will stand you in good stead in your vocation.”
Kathie felt tears coming to her eyes.
“I will try to learn, Miss Annersley.”
“I am sure of it.”

Hmm - not sure this follows too well from the scene in the study - I had a great fight scene written, with sparks flying all over the place, but thanks to the Abbess's calming influence have had to tone it down considerably!  Oh well.  It's needed for what comes next, so bear with me...

---

Still reflecting on Miss Annersley’s words, Kathie fought rather shy of Nancy that week.  She knew she had not been very good company on the last few occasions when they had met, and was ashamed of her previous irritability.  Deep down, she also knew that Nancy was too good-natured to hold it against her, but, unfortunately for Kathie, a little demon of pride held her back from saying sorry.  She struggled with herself during the week, and promised mentally that she would make amends the following weekend.

This conversation unfolded on Friday, when Kathie walked in to the staff room, and found Nancy sitting alone.

“Hello,” Kathie said, trying to suppress the awkwardness she felt.
“Hello to you, too, stranger,” Nancy smiled at her gently.  She had understood her partner’s need for some space this week, and had given it willingly.  All the same, she had missed her company, and was glad to see her now.
Kathie sat down in a chair across the room from her friend.
“What are you doing this weekend, Nancy?”
“Spending Saturday at Freudesheim, and taking Va down to Interlaken on Sunday.  And you?”
“Rambling with Vb on Sunday.  But I didn’t have plans for Saturday.  What are you doing at Freudesheim?”
“Jo’s having a reunion for some Old Girls from the Tyrolean days,” Nancy said placidly.  “Hilary and Biddy are coming, among others.”
Kathie bit her lip.  She had hoped to spend a pleasant day with her partner, and now they would have to wait at least one more week.  “You didn’t think to consult me?”  Despite all her good resolutions, she couldn’t help a slight edge creeping into her voice.
Nancy glanced at her swiftly.  “I’m awfully sorry, Kathie, but I don’t see how I could have done.  Jo came for Kaffee and Kuchen in the staff room yesterday – you weren’t here – and invited us over.  It would have looked rather strange if I’d said I had to ask you.”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” her companion said.  She took a deep breath.  “Couldn’t you have thought of some excuse not to go?”
“Well, to be honest, it sounded like fun,” Nancy replied truthfully.  “And seeing as you hadn’t suggested anything else – in fact, I rather thought you wanted some space this week – there didn’t seem any reason not to accept.”
Kathie frowned.  “It’s been a busy week, that’s all.  I’d thought we could go for a drive on Saturday – but I see that’s impossible.”
Her partner eyed her thoughtfully.  “Kathie, you’re right, and I am sorry.  I could have found some way not to answer Joey on the spot, but I didn’t.”  Nancy’s peaceable reputation had good foundations.  “There’s nothing I’d have liked to do more than spend the day with you, though.  I hope you know that.”

Kathie was spared an answer to this forbearing remark by the entrance of Rosalind Moore.
“Hello!” the head of geography caught sight of her two friends.  “Off duty this period?”
“Yes,” said Kathie briefly.  Then, not wanting to be rude, “I say, Rosalind – would you partner me for Sunday’s ramble?  I’m taking Vb to St. Cecilie.  Won’t you join us?”
“With pleasure,” her senior smiled pleasantly.
“Good.”  She cast a glance at Nancy.  “Well then, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see what Lower IVa have made of rivers.”  Kathie nodded at her colleagues and left the room, chiding herself inwardly for yet another awkward conversation.

Akh, I'm posting so much this evening, even without teasing... what a waste... but there's a scene I want to get to...

---
Nancy, despite her habitual good humour, was not insensitive to the darker moods of others.  She knew that Kathie’s temperament was more volatile than her own, and understood that her partner’s sporadic outbursts were just the flip side of a typically cheerful disposition.  On this occasion, Nancy’s concern was much more for Kathie than herself.  She could see that the younger woman was anxious about her recent mood swings, and just wished she could lend her some support.

After chewing on this problem for some hours, Nancy decided to approach her old friend, Mlle de Lachenais.  She caught her in the staff room, shortly after evening Prayers.
“Jeanne, I wonder if I might ask you a favour?” she began.
“But of course,” the amiable Frenchwoman replied.  “What is it, cherie?”
“Well, I was wondering if you might swap weekend duties with me.”  The maths mistress hesitated, then continued, “If you’ve already made plans, please don’t let me interfere with them.  It’s just that I know you’re free this weekend, and on duty next, you see, while my timetable is the other way round.  I’m supposed to be taking Va down to Interlaken this Saturday, but for personal reasons I’d rather stay on the Platz.”
“Ah, but this would do me a favour,” smiled little Mlle de Lachenais, her eyes twinkling.  “It is my niece’s birthday next weekend – she lives in Geneva with her mother, my sister – and I had regretted that I would be unable to attend the celebrations.  But if we can exchange duties, then I will be able to attend after all.”  She beamed at the taller woman.
“Excellent!” said Nancy with a warm smile.  “Then we have a deal.”  She moved off before Jeanne could inquire into her personal reasons, and headed for the staff quarters.

“Kathie?”  She tapped on her friend’s door, and popped her head round the door.  The room was in darkness, although it was still early, and there was a small figure curled up in bed.  “May I come in?” she asked uncertainly.
“Do.”
Nancy entered the room, shut the door behind her, and walked over to sit on the edge of the bed.
“Are you all right, my love?” she asked gently.
“I’m fine,” her friend’s tone belied her words, but refused to admit any discussion.
Nancy sent up a swift prayer for help.
“Kathie, may I join you and Rosalind on Sunday?”
There was a silence.
“I thought you were going to Interlaken.”
“I was.  Jeanne’s going instead – I asked her to swap.”
Another silence.
“OK.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”  A pause.  “Why?”
“Oh, Kathie,” Nancy’s tone was sad.  “Because I want to be with you.”
There was a muffled sob from the pillow.  “ 'night, Nancy.”
”Good night, my love.”  The elder woman leant to kiss her friend on the cheek, “Sleep well.”

Sunday was a clear day, and the ramblers set off towards St. Cecilie with a swing in their step.   The girls marched in an orderly crocodile while they were still on the Platz, but once they had passed the few chalets which gathered round its end, they broke into small groups and chattered to their hearts’ content.  As seniors, the girls were responsible enough on the whole, and the mistresses had little to do by way of supervision.  Nancy and Rosalind were in excellent spirits, and kept up a lively banter, into which Kathie made an effort to join from time to time, at least.  Her mood was reviving, although she still felt slightly awkward around Nancy.  As the youngest mistress of the party, however, she took the main responsibility for rounding up stragglers, and was consequently able to slip in and out of the conversation without it appearing odd.

“Girls!  What were you three thinking of?” Kathie relieved her feelings on a group which had got ahead from the rest.  “Len, you at least know the rules.  Keep with the rest and don’t go galloping on like that or I must make you all croc!”
“I’m sorry,” Len said meekly, while Richenda and Odette looked abashed.  “We were talking and never noticed.”
“It’s your business to notice.  Don’t let me have to speak to you again!”

She swept past them, suppressing a giggle at their penitent faces, and rejoined her colleagues.  Nancy was expostulating on the shortcomings of Francie Wilford’s mathematics, but Kathie’s attention remained on the group of girls to whom she had just spoken.  ‘Good heavens!’ she thought.  ‘Odette is actually talking for once.’  She regarded them with a queer expression on her face.  ‘Well, if there’s hope for her, then maybe there is for me as well!’

The ramble continued to St. Cecilie, a hamlet some six miles or so along the coast road from the Gornetz Platz.  The new girls were particularly thrilled by the place, admiring the traditional chalets and farmhouses, and peering into the tiny whitewashed church with the usual onion-bulb spire at the end of the village.  At length, Miss Wilmot sent Len and Con to the Prieswork farm to ask for milk, as the most proficient speakers of Schwyzerdutch, while the other members of the party settled themselves comfortably on logs or rolled-up raincoats.   Upon the return of the milk expedition, the ramblers tucked in to the delicious meat pies, sandwiches, fruit and cakes that the Chalet School kitchens always provided on these occasions.

As the meal was finishing, Miss Moore jumped up and raced across the grass to the edge of the mountain shelf, where she turned and surveyed the north.  A moment later, she was tearing back at full speed.
“Pack up and be quick, everyone of you!” she cried.  “There’s a storm coming up and we don’t want to be caught so far from school if it can be helped.  Quickly!

When giving an account of their adventures to the Head that evening, Kathie could hardly recall what had happened next.  The party had run for ages, barely avoiding a huge thunderbolt which had struck the earth before them just as they reached the shelter of an old barn.  Then, after the rain and thunder had subsided, they had set off again in the direction of the school, only to be confronted with a stream that had been augmented into a pouring torrent.   Kathie shuddered as she remembered the force of the water, into which her lover had marched calmly…

“There’s only one thing to do.  I’ll make for the bridge – the handrail is a good foot above the water.  I can help the girls across.”
For one sickening instant, Kathie’s heart nearly stopped as her partner seemed to slip on the bridge.  But Nancy was gripping the handrail and prevented herself from being swept away by the roaring surge just in time.
“I think we can do it.”
The sturdy mistress crossed back and forth, helping the girls across, one by one.  Her slighter colleagues stood helplessly at the side of the river, watching with their hearts in their mouths, as she grew visibly more tired.  They waited until she had taken all of the girls over, taking their turns last.  Miss Ferrars was the last to cross.
“Come on, Kathie,” Nancy’s voice was strong, though her body was exhausted.  “One last trip.”
“Nancy -”
“Save your breath, you’ll need it.”
The sheer force of the water proved the truth of those words, nearly sweeping Kathie off her feet.  Only her partner’s firm arms around her waist prevented her from going under.  For one terrifying instant, Kathie thought they would drown together.  Then they were across, and shivering on the other side…

---

“Kathie?” Nancy’s head appeared around that young woman’s door early the next morning.  “How did you sleep, my dear?”
“Nancy Wilmot!” Her partner sat up in shock.  “What on earth are you doing out of bed?  Matey would have a fit!”
“Let her!” Nancy giggled.  “I’m fine, Kathie.  Although I must admit I ache rather.  Oh, all right, all right,” she rolled her eyes, “I’ll go back to bed.  They’ll keep me there today, anyway, whether I like it or not.  I just wanted to ask if you’d take me for a spin in the car this evening.  For recuperative purposes, you know,” she added, looking abnormally innocent.
Kathie began to laugh.  “Taking the invalid out in the car for a breath of fresh air, because she’s too weak to walk – that kind of thing?”
“Exactly!” said Nancy with satisfaction.  “Can do?  Good, then I’ll see you at 17 o’clock.  That is, I presume you won’t be teaching either, today?”
“No, the Abbess told me to take the day off, too.”  Kathie wriggled out of bed as Nancy made to disappear.  “Wait!”  She ran to the door on tiptoes, and kissed her lover lightly.  “Thanks for coming round.”
Nancy smiled down at her affectionately.  “See you later.”

At last!  Good God - it's 5am - this was one seriously dictatorial plot bunny!
---
Between them, Nancy and Kathie had no difficulty overriding Matron’s objections.
“But I feel fine, Matron.  It would do me good to get some fresh air.”
“Sitting in the car won’t tire her at all, truly.”
They giggled wickedly as they escaped the clutches of the school’s domestic tyrant.
“She does owe you one, anyway, Kathie, from last week!”

Kathie drove for a good fifteen minutes, taking them far away from the Platz.  Then she stopped the car at the side of the road, just where a low stone bridge forded a gentle stream.
“Feel like getting out?”
They climbed out and sat on the bridge, looking at the great Swiss mountains.

“Nancy, I want to apologise.”
“Mmm.”
“I’ve been horrible this term, I really have.  And I’m sorry.”
Nancy looked at her partner.  “Apology accepted.  But I think we should talk about why.”
Kathie nodded.  Then she looked at the ground.  “I felt inadequate,” she said, with some difficulty.
“Why?”
“Because – because you’re older.  You have more experience than I do.  And everything that I’ve been struggling with seems to be so easy for you.”  She glanced up at Nancy.  “I need to be able to talk about my work.  But I feel – felt – that it was trivial for you.  That you’d gone through it all years ago.”  She paused.  “I felt like the Staff Baby – not like your partner.”
Nancy studied her carefully.  “Was that in any way because of my behaviour?”
Kathie flushed.  “No.  I don’t think so.”  She thought for a moment.  “You were reasonable, and kind, and supportive,” she said finally, in a small voice.
“Would it help” Nancy asked slowly, “if I told you that I don’t give a damn about your age, or experience, or position?”
Her partner looked down at her feet.  “Yes.”
“So look at me, Kathie.”  Nancy waited until her friend’s brown eyes had lifted towards her.  “And listen to me carefully, because I want you to believe this. I love you for who you are, not what you are.  It wouldn’t make a scrap of difference to me if you were Staff Baby or Headmistress.   I care about whatever you experience, and it doesn’t matter if it’s something I dealt with ten years ago, or something I know nothing about.  Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
“In Geneva,” continued Nancy steadily, “You were the confident one.  You held me together when I thought I’d fall apart.  Did you care for me any less at that moment?”
“No.”  Kathie paused.  “No, I just wanted to help.”
“That’s how I feel about you, in school.”
Kathie looked up at her friend.  “Are you sure?” she whispered.
“Yes!”  Nancy’s eyes filled with tears, but she was laughing through them.  “Kathie Ferrars, do you know how frustrated I’ve felt, these last three weeks?  All I’ve wanted to do is make life easier for you.  And you’ve been running away from me like I was there to judge you!”

Kathie looked sheepish.  “I’ve been a fool.”  She put her hand on Nancy’s.  “Does it help if I say I’m sorry?”
Nancy began to laugh; a low, rolling laugh that came from her very core. “Just tell me you won’t do it again.”  She put one arm around her partner.  “And now… do you think we could talk about something more pleasant?”
“Such as?” Kathie was swiftly regaining her composure.
“Well, would you let me tell you when I love you?”  Nancy smiled as her friend blushed again.  “I love you when you’re sitting in the staff room, scribbling away at your desk, oblivious to the world.  I love you when I see your angular handwriting on the notice-board.  I love you when you’ve got a group of girls hanging on your words and laughing at your jokes.  And I love you when you’re sitting close beside me.”
Kathie turned towards her.  “Oh, Nancy.”
There was a moment of sweet silence.
“Thank you, love.”

“What on earth are you reading, Nance?” Kathie Ferrars – a much happier young woman after the previous week’s chat – plumped down beside her colleague in the staffroom, and plucked a learned-looking tome out of her friend’s hands.  “‘The Journal of Applied Statistics’ – urgh!  How can you?”
Nancy looked up with a smile.  “Oh, it’s not so bad.  This is a new journal, actually – the first volume – and a colleague of mine has an article published, so I thought I’d take a look.  I do like to keep my eye in, you know.”
“Rather you than me!” Kathie pulled a face.  “I didn’t know you were interested in statistics, though.  How’s that?”
“Well, they do play a part in most maths degrees these days,” Nancy said mildly.  Then she stretched, and gave a grin.  “Actually, I spent a few years doing statistical research, myself, before I came to teaching.”
“Really?”  Kathie was most intrigued.  “I never knew that – always assumed you’d gone straight from university to school.”
Nancy shook her head.  “I only started teaching five years ago, in my late twenties.”  She paused.  “The research was part of the war effort.  The government recruited young mathematicians from the universities, and, well, I was one of them.”

“Spy stuff?” Kathie looked suitably thrilled.
Nancy snorted.  “Not exactly.”
“Well, what was it, then?”
“Not allowed to say.”  A shadow passed over the maths mistress’s face.  “Don’t ask, please, Kathie.  It was for the good of the country – but I can’t say I liked everything we had to do.  It wasn’t ‘pure’ mathematics, by any means.”
Her partner raised an eyebrow.  “Of course, if it’s like that.”  She paused.  “But did you live in military barracks, Nancy?  It must have been awfully different from here.  Oh!” she added hastily, “Don’t tell me if you can’t.”
Nancy smiled at her.  “Well, not exactly military quarters.  But they did put all the researchers together – and women were definitely in the minority.”
“What was that like?”  Kathie’s voice was full of curiosity.
Her companion shrugged.  “O.K.  I didn’t really think about it much, to be honest.  I grew up with a horde of brothers, you know, so it wasn’t a big deal.  Just concentrated on doing my job.”
“Right.”  The younger woman was dying to ask more questions, but could see that her partner didn’t want to talk about it – or couldn’t.  She restrained her curiosity and tactfully changed the subject.  “So what’s your friend’s article about?”
Nancy smiled.  “Oh, it’s jolly interesting, actually…”

I think the people in charge of that sort of thing looked at him and laughed hysterically at the idea of him actually trying to shoot anyone, so they put him to work doing that instead. And I believe it was very interesting for him, yes. He went to all the same places at the soldiers, including the Middle East, but was basically safe.

*wails*  My job is interesting, really!  It sends me to exciting places to talk to people from completely different societies and seeing how they live.  How could that not be fun?

... Ahah!  I have a Hilda Annersley quote which fits almost perfectly  ;D   *smug*

Quote:
"What, exactly, does it entail?" Margot asked.  "Frankly, it sounds to me too dull for words."
"Oh, I don't think you would find it so in reality, Margot.  Think it over.  Don't you think it will be interesting visiting schools of all kinds and nationalities, seeing the different ways in which various people tackle all the problems you get in any school and what they look on as the really important things in life?"
"Yes, it does sound OK when you put it that way," Margot admitted.

*sufficiently smug at having found that quote not to answer Lesley's comment with the statistical diatribe that it merited!*

--
“Um… Nancy?” The partners were at Hilary’s again, a month after their first weekend there.  They had worried that it was rather soon to be going away again as a pair, but neither had been able to resist Hilary’s invitation.  As Kathie had put it, there were some things for which one just couldn’t wait!
“Mmm?”  Nancy rolled over on their double bed and propped herself up on her elbows.  “What is it, sweetheart?”
Her partner gazed at her pensively.  “I want to ask you something.”
“Well, go ahead then,” Nancy smiled.
“It’s about what you were saying the other day – about what you did during the war.”
Nancy looked extraordinarily demure.  “About my statistical research, you mean?”
“No – well, not exactly.  Scintillating though it was,” Kathie saw her friend’s lips twitching.  “Oh, all right, if you’re going to make me say it.  All those men you were living with, Nancy!  Were you never tempted?”
Nancy laughed.  “We-ell…” she drawled.  For once, she was in a mood to tease.  “There were an awful lot of them.  Some rather handsome.  And several interested in me.”
Kathie arched an eyebrow.  “You seem very sure of that.”
“My dear, does it surprise you?” Nancy lay back on the bed.  “Surely you didn’t think you were the first to notice my charms.”
“Humph!”  Kathie gave her lover a mock frown.  “Never mind that.  Tell me what you thought of them, please.”
Her friend chuckled.  “Well, they were excellent mathematicians…”
“Nancy Wilmot!”

“Oh, all right, all right!” Nancy gave way as Kathie showed signs that she would start extracting an answer through physical force.  “No, I don’t think I was tempted.  I suppose I thought of myself as a blue-stocking, really – although several of them evidently saw me in a different light.”
“Really?”  Kathie found it hard to believe.  “I mean, really, you thought of yourself as a dry, academic, bookish type?”
“Well… yes.  I was interested in my work.  So it didn’t seem particularly strange, to me.”
“But, but -” her lover couldn’t find a less direct way of putting it, “You’re so attractive, Nancy.    How could you possibly not realise?”
Nancy smiled at her.  “Well, I guess I just didn’t.”  The teasing note had disappeared from her voice.  “I suppose I was never interested in men, and it didn’t occur to me that there was an alternative.”  She paused.  “I don’t mean that I disliked my body, Kathie.  I never minded about being plump, even if people teased me.  It’s more that…” she looked shy all of a sudden, “I didn’t realise that there was anything to enjoy.”
Kathie tucked away a strand of golden hair that was falling into Nancy’s eyes.  “You’ve changed your mind on that one, though.”  It was more statement than question.
“Yes.  Or you have.”  Nancy looked up at her partner.  “You’ve taught me a lot about myself, Kathie.  I - I am grateful for that."
“My pleasure,” the younger woman remarked gently.

Btw I just can't get N&K out of my head here - the discerning reader will remember that Geneva is where they got it together - it's a very strange feeling walking down the same streets that I was writing about a few weeks ago, I keep thinking "this is where they walked", only obviously it was all just in my head.  If I get time, I'm going to go & visit the church where they spent their first evening!  :) :)

A bientot, mes amis...

It's a bit like that when you visit Interlaken and see the fantastic view of the Jungfrau.  That's when you haven't written anything yourself.  It must be much more intense when you have.

*shaking head* Vikki, Vikki, you work in the hospitality industry, you should know about the responsbile serving of alcohol, particularly when there are minors around.

No one, and I mean no one, better be thinking of drinking Baileys without me! it's the most devine substance on the planet as far as I'm concerned.

Hell, I even named my dog after it!
