Title: a little lovestory
Post by Marianne on Jun 5th, 2003, 7:25pm
Len lay on the grass of her family home, holding hands with her beloved fiance. It wa the last day of the summer, soon she ould be retourning tooxford, so many miles away, wth out Reg.

'Reg looked over at slim, beautiful Len, 'I do love you Len, will you Kiss me?'

'Nope,' said Len, grabbing Reg's hair and pulling it firmly.

[hope that hasn't ruined the mood too much...]

'Hey Len!' yelled Reg laughing, making a grab for Lens hair but he was too slow.

Before he had even grasped at Len's hair a giant St. Bernard had landed between them demanding his own share of Len's attention by knocking Reg over and licking Len's face.

"Down Bruno, down!" shrieked Len as his weight landed on her.

But before she could grab his collar, Bruno had transferred his attentions to Reg. This young man leapt to his feet to defend himself, but it was no use, Bruno pinned him down again with firm paws, slavering over his conquest. Reg was rendered helpless, both from the weight of the dog and his own mirth. Len fared no better, having been overcome with a fit of giggles.
"Oh dear, Reg" she spluttered between gulps of air "It looks as though you have got your kiss after all!"

A loud splutter of giggling emerged from further into the garden and Reg hastily got up and angrily began to tell Bruno off. He still didn't like being humiliated, however the years had changed Reg a good deal as had the influence of friends like Jack Maynard so he quickly regained his composure and joined Len in her laughter. Soon the other source of giggling appeared and Cecil appeared.

'I saw you Reg! I saw you, and look what i amde Bruno do!' cecil chuckled in her delight, she felta great protection for er eldest sister.

'Oh you are a naughty girl cecil-baba,' said Len jokingly picking her small sister off the ground!

"Very naughty."  Reg added, tickling the small girl who giggled.
"Kiss please."  She held her face up to be kissed and Len and Reg kissed either cheek.  Satisfied, Cecil wriggled to be put down and Len set her down, laughing as the small girl ran away, shrieking for Bruno to wait for her.  Bruno needless to say, had no intention of doing so and Len and Reg resumed their seats on the ground, laughing at the pair.
"We'll have kids of our own, one day."  Reg mused.

"Oh yes" agreed Len. "I'm quite determined to outdo Mamma by having a baker's dozen! Shall we aim for Quads or Quins to start us off?"
Reg laughed. "Thirteen, darling/ Isn't that unlucky?"

'We'll justb have to even it ff to 14 wont we!' said Len chuckilng to herself. 'What names do you like best?'

"Hildegarde and Etheldreda have always been my personal favourites" said Reg.

"Hildegarde and what?!"  Len sat up with a bang, not noticing the wicked twinkle in her fiancé's eyes.
"Hildegarde and Ethelreada."  Reg replied calmly.
"Over my dead body!"  Len exclaimed.
"Oh I don't think I need to resort to such extreme measures."  Reg replied.

"But," he continued, "if you insist on carrying on your family's J complex, my favourites are Jehosophat and Jemina."
As Len's eyes rested on her fiance's face, she noticed the twinkle in his eyes. Before he could do anything, she had reached behind her for one of the cushions they had been reclining on, and flung it, with remarkably good aim for a girl, straight into Reg's face, temporarily depriving him of breath.

'Oh I see, you were going to name your children, Margret and Josephine in various forms over, MY dead body - very cunning!' Reg teased throwing the cushion back again, more gently than his Jo.

"No I was thinking Regina, Reginold, Regemy and Regelette, all named after you" said Len, getting in the spirit of naming her yet to be quads.

(of course Len! - thier both so alike!)

'Oh really Len, thats appauling, myself i'm hoping for Boys so lets go for for boys names - all beginning with 'J' of course!' Reg stated ignoring Len's toxic look at hie inal statmet.

'I'll opt for James, Joseph (after your mother!), Joshua and perhaps, Jem.

Len hugged her arms to herself and smiled fondly as she looked at Reg. It wasn't really time yet to worry about quads or names, just knowing that he was there and would be while she studied at Oxford was enough. More than enough. She knew that there was lots of growing up she still had to do, and hoped that her years in Oxford would do this as well as helping to prepare her for the married life she would eventually have.

She was greatly enjoying her time at univercity and relished with a great fervour her chance to go but in reality she was a home bird. She could see her and Reg setling down near Lens family home and having their own little family.

Their own family, yes. . . but not straight away, thought Len.  She looked thoughtfully at Reg.  Was now the time to drop her bombshell on him?  He was in a good mood just now, so maybe he wouldn't over-react.

"Reg," she began, hesitantly.  "What would you say to -- well -- not starting our family too soon after we're married?  If we waited a couple of years?"

"But darling, why the delay?"  Reg was looking stunned, not to mention worried.  Was Len having second thoughts about marrying him?

"Well, it's just that being the eldest of such a large family, with loads of adoptees and foster siblings into the bargain, I've always had to look after the younger ones with Con and Margot.  I just thought that it would be nice to only have you to look after for a while. . ."  Len's voice tailed off.  "It's not that I don't want a family of our own!  Just, not yet, that's all."

Reg was relieved.  "Of course darling, I understand.  To be honest, I've always thought you three had a rough deal, what with having to be prefects at school and then coming home to look after your own brothers and sisters.  Your mother is a wonderful woman, very capable and all that, but a family that size is too much for one person to look after!  Don't worry about it.  We'll have a couple of years to ourselves before we start in on those quads!"

Len smiled.  "I knew you'd understand."  (Quite forgetting her trepidation in broaching the subject!)  "But not a word to Mamma, all right?  She's a champion butter-in and I wouldn't want her trying to organise our lives after we're married!"

"Okay," Reg replied, with a wicked twinkle in his eye, "Mum's the word!"

So Len was happy, but there was still the question of how she was going to tell Joey, her mother was expecting her to have loads of children straight away, but Len was part of a moremodern wrld.

What Len had forgotten is that Jo usually knew with a high degree of accuracy what her children were thinking. In this case she had a very good idea of Len's thoughts on the subject and was in complete agreement. Jo hoped that Len would bring up the subject with her soon so that they could discuss it, otherwise she was going to need to raise it herself since soon Len would be returning to Oxford. Jo looked out the window and watched as Len and Reg sat talking intensely, wishing that each of her children could be as happy as Len looked now.

Later that evening Len did bring up the subject,
'Mamma...You know i love being part of a big family...but...' began Len.
'I know honey, you don't want one so soon, but Reg does, is that it?'
'Why yes! How did you know?' excalimed Len, apparently unable to take in her mothers mind reading ability.

"Besides," Joey continued, "I know that the world has changed. When I was your age, marriage was what you were aimed for. But now!" She smiled. "And I know that you and your sisters have had a lot to do with the babies here."

"Well," admitted Len, "I must admit, it would be nice to have a couple of years without dirty nappies and teething and all the other responsibilities of being a parent."

Joey was a little startled at this, especially when Len went onto describe in some detail the pains rather than the pleasures of being a new parent. She began to feel rather disturbed. She'd always believed that having a large family was the best way to do things, as the elder children could help with the youngest, but now she was starting to wonder whether in fact Len would even *want* children!

Joey nodded. "Which," she said, "my darling, is perfectly understandable. I hope that you will have a family..."

"Oh, I plan to beat you on that front," Len answered, smirking.

Joey returned the smirk. "We'll see. My point is, that while I hope you will have a family eventually, I do understand your not wishing to start right away." Joey paused. "What does Reg say?"

Ooops - go from whomever

"Well, he's had an idea, he believes that it's possible for a man to carry a child to term, and wants to be a guinea pig for the first experiments in the field!"

Len chuckled at the expression of shock on her mothers face......
"Gotcha!" she said "I'm only teasing you, as if a man could get pregnant! This isn't an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie you know!"

Well - I figured SOME sense of plausibility was good.

"Reg was...a little surprised," Len admitted.

"But?"

"But I think he agrees."

"Then, there should be no problems." Joey smiled.

Reg dying horribly in childbirth, love the idea. Wouldn't it have to be peritonitis or somthing, presumably a man would have to have a C Section  ??? Or would we just leave him on the table to bleed to death, the family being too taken with the new arrival to remember to sew him up?  ;D ;D

I like to think so too. The only problem I have is that there are so few broken engagements, I wonder how EBD could have done it without disgracing Len or giving her a nasty experience (ie Reg running away with another woman).  Killing him seems the best possiblity, but you then have to deal with 'poor Len'

I like the idea of your group, Jennie.  Do you think you could open a silly thread about it, and give everyone a chance to do something nasty to him!! - Pretty please  ;D

Title: Re: a little lovestory

You bet she would! Jo and Jack should have trodden firmly on the idea of an engagement with their dainty arched insteps.

I always thought that Jo was rather jealous of her triplets as they grew up, she's always complaining about how tall they're getting.

Perhaps an idea for another thread?

To hear is to obey Ally.

Well, it really must be terrible giving birth to six stunningly lovely girls and five, presumably handsome lads, when you're so frequently described as 'not pretty'. Jack really must have been a heartstopper for them all to turn out so well.

I actually think EBD liked Reg. Look how quickly he got rid of his failings and became a doctor. And I quite like Reg, too, although I'll always put my two cents in for a fic if I'm enjoying it, even if it does mean disposing of Reg.
