Title: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 1:17pm
An air of quiet industry hung over the Chalet School.  Outside, the darkness had never truly lifted as the snow came swirling down, dancing like so many dervishes, and looking as though it meant to continue for days.  In the Geography room there was silence as the Fourth struggled with the map that Miss Wilson had set them to draw.  All that could be heard was the occasional shuffle as one girl or another changed position slightly, and the gentle ticking of the great clock hanging on the wall.  No one dared do anything but work that day, as Bill had demonstrated that she was in no mood to tolerate anything out of the ordinary.  More than one girl had already felt the sting of Bill’s famed sarcasm, and not one of them wanted to experience more.  Bill herself was sitting at the mistresses desk marking the work of another form, and frown marring her normally attractive countenance.  Her previous lesson had been with the Third form, and they had succeeded in trying her patience to the limit and beyond.

Margia Stevens risked a small sigh as she lifted her head to glance at the clock.  There was still far too much of the lesson left for her liking, especially with Bill like this.  The worst of it was that she did not dare do anything to liven up the lesson.  The snow had been falling since the previous day, and would probably go on for another few days yet, judging from the previous winter, and Margia was old enough to be aware that the confinement was affecting the staff at least as much as the girls.

Bill looked up from her work.  “Have you finished, Margia?” she asked sharply.  “No? Then carry on, if you please.  You all have plenty to do, without needing to look around you.”
Poor Margia’s eyes dropped back onto her work, though not before she received a number of sympathetic glances from sundry other girls.

Bill moved slightly and her chair scraped on the floor, making more than one girl jump a little, but the silence continued.  Hilda Annersley, passing along the corridor, glanced curiously through the glass in the door, intrigued at the hushed atmosphere inside.  Seeing the expression on Bill’s face she smiled quietly to herself, before continuing on her way.  She knew the effect that that particular expression could have on schoolgirls.  Bill herself was conscious of her bad mood, and the effect it was having on her class, but found it impossible to lighten the atmosphere, however much she knew that the fault did not lie with the class before her.  She knew the cause was not just the behaviour of the Third, either.  This time of month was always hard on her patience, and the falling snow had only served to worsen the situation.  As much as the girls did, she longed to be able to go outside for a good long walk.

Bill's in a strop because she's got her period?

Who is the accident going to happen to? Come on Pat, don't be a tease!

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 2:26pm
Who me?  Tease?   ::) :o

She lifted her head slightly, and took a look around the room.  Every girl’s head was bent over her work, and she smiled slightly to herself.  At least she was getting some peace and quiet.  As it happened, she was far too optimistic, and events were to unfold which would shake her out of both her bad mood and her complacency.

And?  You do realise it is very unoriginal of you to be such a tease I hope?

You could go for originality by actually getting on with it!

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 2:56pm
I didn't know that was coming next!!

Oh all right then.

Suddenly the silence was rent by the shriek of a chair skidding over the floor, and the heavy thump of a body landing on the ground.  Every head jerked up, looking round to see who had fallen, certain that it could only have been caused by someone tilting.

Looking round at their friends they could see no one on the floor, and their heads reluctantly swivelled to the front of the class.  An astounding vision met their gaze.  There was almost no sign of Bill, but her chair was on it’s side, lying half way across the room to the door.

Wonderful, Pat. I was expecting Margia or one of the class to have the accident.

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 3:16pm
Bill herself was sitting on the floor, holding onto the edge of the mistresses table as if her life depended on it.  She was very red in the face, and feeling a complete idiot, though naturally nothing more of her feelings showed on her face.  Before she could do anything to rise to her feet, Margia was out of her desk, and by her side.
“Are you all right, Miss Wilson?” she asked.  “Did the chair break?”  She looked across at the chair, showing her shock when she found that it was still in one piece.  She had assumed that they chair must have given way, but seeing that it was intact, realised that the mistress had had to have been tilting!  Only the gleam in her eyes gave her thoughts away, however, and she was full of concern for the fallen mistress.

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 3:48pm
Unfortunately for the poor mistress, the crash had been heard outside the classroom.  As Bill was getting shakily to her feet, the door opened and Mlle entered, closely followed by Hilda Annersley and Matey, who assessed the situation with their usual swift competence.
“Miss Wilson, are you all right?” asked Matey.
“To be honest, I feel a trifle bruised,” confessed Bill, longing to get out of the room.
“You’d better come with me, and we’ll see if there is any bruising.”
“I’ll stay with the girls,” volunteered Miss Annersley. “I’m sure they have plenty to get on with.”  She looked meaningfully around the room, and the girls hurriedly subsided into their seats, and buried themselves in their work.  They had been lectured so often on the iniquities of tilting, that they were stunned speechless to find a mistress coming to grief over the self-same thing.  More than one girl was finding it hard to keep a straight face, and Hilda Annersley could see signs of strain as they bit their cheeks to stop themselves laughing.

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 10th, 2003, 4:15pm
Luckily for the girls the bell rang at that moment, and they streamed out of the room to get their milk and biscuits.  Miss Annersley had contemplated ordering them to keep the story to themselves, but had been forestalled by the bell.  Truth to tell, she was almost as hard pressed as the girls, but it would not do for a mistress to be seen laughing over the incident.  Keeping a very straight face, she hurried along to the staff room, longing to see how Nell Wilson was.  A very sheepish-looking science mistress was seated in a chair, drinking a cup of coffee, and Hilda was amused to see that she was perched on a rubber ring, designed to keep her weight off her rear end.
“Before you ask, I bruised my coccyx,” said Nell Wilson quickly.  I suppose the girls are all laughing their heads off about it?”
“What do you expect?  You *were* tilting, I suppose?”
“Yes, but only a little, and on the front legs.  I slid off more than the chair shooting away.”
“It looked like it!  The chair was halfway to the door, I’ll have you know.”
Hilda Annersley finally gave way, and burst out laughing, tears running down her face.  “Oh Nell, your face!  That’ll larn you!  You won’t be able to say a thing to the girls now about tilting – they all knew that was what you had been doing!”
“I know that, my dear.  I’ll be tender for a good few days, to remind me.”

I have to admit to writing from experience!!  My French teacher (Cedric Wainright, poor man!) was one of those old-fashioned teachers, even for the 60s, and you *worked* inhis lessons, or else!  We were translating our French novel, and just when we got to a bit that described the 'ground opening up, and the heroine disappearing into the hole, he fell off his chair!  All you could see was his hands clutching the desk!!  No one laughed - or not out loud anyway - until he stood u laughing, when we did too, politely!  Once he'd goen at the end of the lesson, we erupted of course!  He must have heard as he went up the corridor!

Title: Re: Accident!

Pat, I'm not sure how you all managed to not laugh in his lesson, you must have all had far better self control than I do. Saying that, if our Head Mistress had done the same thing I don't think there would have been a giggle from anyone, she was really really scary (I'm still scared of her now!!).

In the Speisesaal, the Fourth were holding forth to their friends from other forms.
“She *had* to be tilting!” declared Margia,  “After all that they have said to us, too!”
“Are you sure?” queried Jo Bettany.  “Bill has always been so down on that.  Could she just have slipped off?”
“Jo, the chair skidded across the room, nearly to the door!  It would only have toppled over if she’d slipped off.”
“What are you kids talking about?” asked Grizel Cochrane, the Head Girl. “Are you seriously saying that Miss Wilson was tilting her chair and fell off it?  I think you’ve gone crazy!”
“Kid yourself, Grizel Cochrane!” retorted Margia.  “I’m sure she was tilting too!”
“OK, OK, keep your hair on!  I only said it was very unlikely.”
“It was the way you said it, Griselda,” said Joey.
“Oh sorry and all that.  I suppose you know what you’re talking about.  We’ll see what she’s like when she comes in for Mittagessen.”

Morning school continued as normal, and when the bell for Mittagessen finally rang, the school hurried to the Speisesaal, agog with anticipation.  They took their places at the tables, and waited for the staff to arrive.  They were rewarded with the sight of Bill, her head held high, carrying her ring cushion, which she proceeded to place on her chair before standing behind it for Grace.  She was slightly flushed, though many of the girls did not perceive that.  Most of the older ones noticed, though, and this confirmed for them that Margia’s story was accurate.  Bill would not have been so self conscious if there had been no truth to the tale.

Bill was due to take Science with the Fifth immediately after the rest period.  Having been free ever since the accident, she was not looking forward to the experience.  There were one or two inveterate tilters in every form, and she knew very well that the whole school would be wondering how she would react the first time she caught someone.  She herself was not sure, and had decided to treat any incident of that nature in the way she felt most appropriate at the time.  She had wished whole heartedly that she had not had to take the cushion into Mittagessen, but matey had been adamant that not only would it be too painful for her to sit without it, but it would also delay the healing of the rather severe bruising she had sustained.  She had taken a couple of aspirins so that she was in little actual pain at the moment, but anything that upset it would bring it back.

Eminently sensible of Bill!!

She'll have to send herself up as AN AWFUL EXAMPLE!  ;D

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 13th, 2003, 12:59pm
At the start of the afternoon session she made her way to the Science Lab, showing no sign of the trepidation that she felt.  She was grateful that the first class was with the Fifth, who could be expected to show a little restraint, but that would not hold with the lower forms, where there were a number of little monkeys.  The Fifth formers followed her into the lab, and the lesson started.  No one made any reference to her accident, for which poor Bill was grateful in many ways.  However, the avoidance was obvious, at least to her heightened sensitivity, and she was almost glad when the lesson ended, even though she would now face the Third formers.

The Third made their way to their Geography class plotting mischief.  Cornelia Flower, Yvette Mercier, and Evadne Lannis were imps of the fist water, and had persuaded the rest of the form to follow their lead.  Thus when the mistress entered the Geography room, she found a very proper class awaiting her, though her keen eye spotted the early signs of trouble, and she braced herself for what was to come.  The naughty Third allowed the lesson to get under way with no trouble, but as soon as they thought they had lulled Bill into a false sense of security, they began.

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 13th, 2003, 2:32pm
Bill, acutely aware that trouble was brewing, caught a slight movement out of the corner of her eye.  Very carefully, she turned her head so that she could just make out what was happening.  Cornelia Flower was tilting backwards, and rocking gently as she did so, an expression of beatific innocence on her face.  Almost immediately, Bill sensed movement form the other side of the class, and found Yvette Mercier rocking gently sideways.

On cue, almost every other girl in the form started rocking too, and Bill’s eyes turned exceedingly grim. Not for nothing had she earned her reputation, and she was not about to let a group of naughty Middles change that one iota.

Suddenly, she banged the blackboard rubber down onto the staff table with a resounding crash, which was closely followed by a scattering of lesser bangs as chair legs all around the room dropped to the floor.

Here we go then, just before I close down the computer!   ;D

“Sit up straight, and cross your arms behind you,” she snapped.  With Bill looking as she did, no one dared do anything else, and they sat there gazing at her in apprehension.  Bill stood looking back at them, and then started to wander around the room, looking at each girl in an interested sort of way, as if she was examining an interesting botanical specimen.  The tension in the room rose as she continued to pace, saying nothing, fully aware of the effect she was having.  Seeing the scared faces around her, she nearly spoilt everything by laughing, but calling on every ounce of her experience, she kept her face straight, as she walked back to the front of the room and turned to face them.
“Every girl who has tilted her chair is to stand up,” she said. “Now!”  All but three girls reluctantly climbed to their feet.  “Very well.  The three who have not joined in this childish piece of rudeness may go to their Common Room.  There is no reason why they should be involved any further in this.”  The three thankfully escaped, shaking with relief that they had not joined their friends.  The rest of the class waited gloomily for their fate to befall them.  Suddenly the prank did not seem half so funny as it had done, and more than one girl was already near to tears, or ready to scream.  Bill knew exactly what effect she was having, and let the silence continue.  Finally, when her judgement told her that she had reached the edge, she spoke, making every girl in the room jump.
“Whose idea was this? Stand out beside your desk.  The rest may sit down, and clasp your hands on top of your heads.”
Cornelia, Yvette and Evadne crawled out and stood beside their desks, shaking.  “I hope you realise that not only were you extremely impertinent, but rude and dishonourable as well?  You have taken advantage of my own misfortune to disrupt my lesson, and have contrived to bring the rest with you.  Since you cannot be trusted to work properly whilst you are sitting down, you will all of you stand up for every lesson until I give you permission to do otherwise.  In addition, you will each of you write a letter of apology to me for your behaviour, and if I am not satisfied with them, you will re-write them until I am.  This will be done before you start any of your Preparation tonight, and I will speak to whoever is on duty to explain the situation.  The three girls standing will also write an apology to each of her classmates for leading them into this behaviour, and will stand for their meals until after Abendessen tomorrow night. If you behave like children, you will be treated as such.  You may sit down now, and put your hands on your heads.  The class will sit like this until the end of the lesson.”
One or two sobs were sounding around the room, but Bill ignored them.  She sat down, carefully, on her cushion, and opened a book and began to read, leaving the class sitting there in silence.

I must admit, that had occurred to me too!!! Maybe she had PMS rather than actually having her period? That would explain the short temperedness!

Ouch.  That punishment sounds more painful than Bill's injury,
but I suppose it had to be done - if she had let them get away with it once.....

Oh, I would have joined in for sure, but I always tilt forwards!

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by Lisa_T on Nov 14th, 2003, 1:45am
*g* I'm a forward tilter too. Especially when I was doing A'level. I think I did slide off the chair once, but as it was just me and my British History teacher, it didn't really matter!

But I'd never tilt while teaching. Then again, I tend to stand. I feel more in control of the class that way.

Title: Re: Accident!

I was a multi-directional tilter. I often tilted back on only one leg of the chair and swivelled around on it.

*splutters* Like Mary-Lou then. I wonder what Miss Annersley would have said if she'd been told that you'd been 'multi directonally tilting' as opposed to the more boring backkwards, forwards, or sidewards! ;)

Bear in mind that they were getting at Bill personally, so the punishment was for rather more than just tilting!

The lesson time crawled by, at least for the Third Form.  Their arms were aching, but they did not dare lower them, or fidget too much.  Bill in this mood was a force to be reckoned with, and they sat there trying not to attract any more attention to themselves.  After a time, Bill looked up at them.
“You may lower your arms and, cross them behind your back.  Move them around a little first to stop any discomfort.”  She watched as they lowered their arms and stretched them out, wincing at the pain of returning circulation.  Finally the bell released them, and Bill left the room, heading for the Staff Room.

“Thank goodness that’s over,” cried Cornelia.  “My arms are still aching, and how I’ll be able to write anything, I don’t know.”
“I wish we’d never tried it on,” Evadne muttered.  “We should have known Bill would come down like a ton of bricks.  Reckon she’s a splay-footed four-flusher to give us that punishment!  Oh well, it’s done now, and I suppose we’ll have to make the best of it.”

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 14th, 2003, 2:55pm
Bill marched into the Staff Room and dumped her books onto her desk with a thump.  Hilda Annersley looked up and smiled.
“Had a bad afternoon, Nell?” she asked.
“The Thirds!  They decided to try it on with a mass tilting session!”
Hilda’s eyes laughed, though she managed to keep a straight face.  “That was rather daring of them.  I imagine they’ve learnt the error of their ways?”
“Oh yes!  They are all writing me a personal letter of apology, and spent most of the lesson with their hands on their heads.”
“That would certainly do the trick.  No doubt you were expecting something of the sort, though.  Everyone had a pretty good idea of what happened this morning, after all.”
“I know it served me right,” growled the sorely tried mistress.  “It doesn’t help when I get teasing in here as well.”
“Never mind, Nell.  You’ll live it down in time.  At least you are unlikely to have any more trouble form the girls after squashing the Thirds so well.”

Pretty May Carthew entered the staff room at that moment, and looked from one to the other.
“What’s up?” she queried.
“The Third have tried to take advantage of Nell’s little accident.  They did a mass tilt in her class.”
Miss Carthew did not manage to control her reaction, and burst out laughing. “Not really!” she gasped.  Did they live to tell the tale?  Should we ask Matey to go and pick up the pieces?”
Nell Wilson nearly leapt on her, such were her feelings, but then her better nature got the better of her, and she laughed.
“They may certainly need some of Matey’s embrocation,” she said.  “They have been sitting in one position for so long that they are probably a little stiff and sore.”

Meanwhile, the Third form were airing their woes in their Common Room, but getting very little sympathy.
“How on earth you thought you’d get away with that in Bill’s lesson, I don’t know.” Jo Bettany was forthright in her scorn.  “Bill’s all there, you know, and accident or no accident, she wouldn’t let a piece of cheek like that go.”
“It serves you right, and you deserve everything you have been given.” This from peaceable Frieda was strong condemnation, and all knew it.
“Do you think Bill’s getting teased by the other staff?” asked Margia suddenly.  “We’d never let someone live it down, but will they?”
“Grownups don’t tease, silly,” said Evadne.  “I can just see it, can’t you?  Who do you think will do it?  Miss Annersley?  Mlle?  Sure they would!”

Know that if it happened in most workplaces or staffrooms the teasing would be unmerciful! ;D

Title: Re: Accident!
Post by PatW on Nov 21st, 2003, 3:39pm
At Abendessen that evening, the school at large was electrified to see the antics at the staff table.  Most had noticed that Bill had failed to bring in the ring pillow she had used at Mittagessen, and the Seniors had felt a deal of sympathy for her.  However, to their amazement, those nearest the staff table saw that Hilda Annersley was carrying it instead, and made sure that it was safely placed on Bill’s chair before that lady could seat herself.  A murmured conversation was also noted, but at the distance involved could not be heard, though the interested observers could see that Bill’s eyes were flashing, and her mouth looked a little grim.  As soon as they were all seated, rife speculation spread down the room.
“What did Miss Annersley say to Bill to make her look like that?” asked Margia Stevens.
“Don’t know, but I sure don’t want her to look at me like that,” muttered Cornelia.
“You don’t suppose that she was objecting to the cushion?” asked Jo.  “She was using it at Mittagessen.”

Poor Nell Wilson, sitting on the staff table in full view of the school was trying very hard to control her emotions.  Hilda Annersley, knowing full well that she had not intended using Matey’s cushion at mealtimes, had managed to place it on her chair, and added insult to injury by saying “I realised that it must have been an oversight on your part when you left this behind.  We don’t want you to make anything worse, do we?”
