Title: staff action FCS
Post by PatW on Dec 12th, 2003, 9:47pm
One for us all to get our teeth into!

Midnight saw dark shadows tiptoeing down dimly lit corridors to a small room as far away from the staff quarters as it was possible to get, and especially from the Annexe where the new head was sleeping the sleep of the innocent.  When the final conspirator had closed the door behind her, Peggy Burnett broke the silence.
“You all know why we are here.  We are all intelligent women, so I’m sure that between us we can come up with a plan.  Many of us have been at school here, and it cannot be nearly as hard as finding something new to do for Staff Evening!”
A spluttering of laughter greeted this sally, but no ideas were forthcoming.  To do away with the Head of a prestigious school without anyone realising that murder had been committed was not that easy.

Over to you!

Oh yes! Thank you, Pat!

A unanimous chuckle rippled round those gathered - there had never been such consensus in the Staff Room.

"What do you think, Nance? Kathie prodded her great friend who had been effectively usurped from the position which was rightfully hers.

I'd love to help, but you must see that I have to be completely innocent!  I'd be the first to be suspected if anyone thought anything fisshy had happened.

You mean you can't think of anything to add, KB?  I don't pretend to want to keep this to myself, and who knows, Rachel may feel like putting her two pennyworth in as well, and then it could go anywhere!!!!

*sigh* Oh, all right then...

"Just to confirm," Nell Wilson whispered, "it is Mary-Low we're talking about here, isn't it?"
Kathie stared at her, wide-eyed. "Well, of course. Who else would it be?"
"I just wanted to check it wasn't Hilda. You know the term hasn't really begun, so you might have meant Hilda."
Peggy chuckled in what had to be considered a disturbingly bloodthirsty manner. "We've had thirty years to bump off Hilda," she reminded the ex-Head of Millies (now that OOAO had also taken over that role). "We would have done it by now if we'd been so inclined."

"We could start small and build up.  Make her seem accident-prone.  Like cutting most of the way through the back legs of her chair so it breaks when she sits on it, for example."
Peggy had not been slow to notice the absence of her favourite chair, and correctly deduce where it had gone!

BTW,KB, my post about being innocent wasn't 'me' , but Nancy saying she couldn't help!!!

"Oh," was all Bill could manage in response to this comment.
"Now, lets be business like about this. We must not be caught out of bed, you know that Matey is loving her new powers. Kathie, did you remember the sleeping draught?" asked Peggy.
Kathie help up an empty packet, "She swallowed every drop, I watched her do so, and I heard the snores as I passed her door."

Mademoiselle laughed, "I did wonder about our crash the term before Gay Lambert arrived, but I think Miss Bubb, the evil woman nearly kiled us all off!"

Nell spoke up quietly, obviously having difficulty in voicing her treason against the Head of the Chalet School.
"The drains at Plas Gwynn went bad and caused a lot of illness.  That's why we had to move to St Briavels.  I'm sure that there are noxios fumes that could be directed into the Annexe, that would make her very ill indeed.  Finishing her off would be a little more difficult, though.  We don't want to make anyone else ill."

'How about we mix laxatives into her coffee? She drinks so much of the stuff that she'll be running to the loo all day and not doing her work.' Peggy said, turning to Kathie. 'As you are now staff-baby again thanks to our 'lovely' new head, you could do it easily, couldn't you.'
'Just wait and watch her run!' said Kathie gleefully.

(Wow Carolyn - we have our own spin off drabble!)

"Of course," continued Kathie thoughtfully, "It might be more fun to give her a combination - one day she get's laxatives, the next day Imodium." Kathie smirked. "She won't know if she's, errr, coming or going."

Peggy grinnned. "I've got another idea too!" she announced happily.
The others looked at her curiously. "Well? Tell all!" demanded Bill, not famed for her patience.
Peggy looked round before asking slowly, "How many of you have read 'The Twits'?" she asked.
When the others all indicated that they were familiar with Mr Dahl's tale of marital bliss, Peggy suggested they utilise ALL the plans contained within that delightful book; "With particular regard to diet".

"I'm sure Karen will be thrilled to help out," remarked Bill, having had the cook wailing long and loud over Miss Trelawney's hints over the future of the kitchen staff.

There was a sudden knock at the door and the Staff all looked around in constenation. Eventually, as the most senior, Nell Wilson went to open the door. Outside stood Hilda Annersley.
"Hilda! What on Earth are you doing here?" Nell voiced the surprise of them all.
Hilda's level gaze swept round all of her ex-staff, more than one dropped their heads in shame at what they had been planning.
"I heard that you were planning to kill the official, and properly installed Headmistress of this establishment?" she said softly,
"well, yes," Nell Wilson looked shame-faced as did the rest of the staff.
Hilda smiled, "well count me in!" she said firmly, "if you think I want to go off and enjoy my retirement leaving that nightmare as my replacement, you've got another think coming!"

Kathie Ferrars gave a soft cackle at Hilda's pronouncement.  Then she turned to the assembled staff.
"Ladies!  This plan is doomed to failure" - she paused dramatically until a suitable number of gasps had arisen from her listeners - "unless we deal with the root cause of the problem," she continued, her eyes glinting evilly.  "Think carefully - who made Mary-Lou what she is today?  Who persuaded the Board of Governors to give her the job?"
There were approving mutters from her audience.
"One murder is not enough!" Kathie hissed.  "Joey Maynard must go too!"

This fate had been awaiting Jo ever since she told the Staff Baby, years ago, that she looked like something the cat had brought in.

'Well, Iv'e got the glimmering of an idea,' said  Joan Bertram. 'The first thing we really need to do is make sure that she never has a really good night's sleep. That will make her bad-tempered, she'll be snappy, and then we can make comments about it in front of Jo Maynard. This will lay the foundations for what we decide to do later. Now, let's all get together tomorrow evening and decide how we're going to ensure that she has disturbed nights. A few of them should set the scene nicely, so that whatever we do will seem natural. How's that for an idea? Think about how we are going to be able to do that, and let us know your ideas tomorrow evening.'

"I've another idea," put in Rosalie who had been sitting there half asleep until the entrance of her former boss. Mary-Lou was working the secretary even harder than the long ago Miss Bubb, and Rosalie was feeling aggrieved as a result. They all turned to her, and the secretary's usual gentle smile crossed her face, oddly at variance with her words. "Once we've got them both exhausted from sleep deprivation, I vote that we stage an 'accident' of some kind. Neither of those two will be able to resist rushing to the rescue. If the accident took place where Emmy Hope or even Len Maynard nearly went down, fatalities would not seem too surprising. Especially as they'll both be so tired they won't know what they're doing- or us either, for that matter." Rosalie sat back and looked expectantly at her audience.

Lesley, Hilda is my fave character too, and I was nearly going to put her into this myself. But i decided to hold fire for you! ;D

Nancy Wilmot suddenly gave an enormous grin, and then said, 'Well, she's off down to Interlaken tomorrow for the whole day, thank goodness, so I think I'll put a little part of the plan into operation.

'I happen to have a small alarm clock with a particularly loud tick. It's battery operated, and I have some new batteries which will fit it. Tomorrow, I'll get Matey, and you know what sort of state she's in with OOAOML threatening to forcibly retire her, and have her sew the clock into our esteemed Head's mattress. She won't know where the ticking noise is coming from, it ought to keep her awake, ad make her doubt her own sanity, especially if no-one else can hear the ticking noise. How's that for one idea?'

"And, Cherie, you know how much she enjoys her pastries for breakfast, and so does joey. Well you might suggest that la mechante Mary Lou might stay at Freudesheim for a few days. I have heard that Anna is not happy with her mistress at the moment, and might be persuaded to help."

A rather wicked expression came into Nell Wilson's face.  "If those of you who were around at the time remember, the Middles formed the SSM."
"What on earth did that stand for?" asked Sharlie.
"The Society for the Suppression of Matron. One of their little tricks was putting snails on her window.  they made the most unearthly racket.  That idea came from Jo Bettany, as she was then.  I think it's time that it came back to haunt her!"

Hilda chuckled.

"For a second, I thought you meant the society for the suppression of Mary Lou.

"Can anyone remember what else they did? Baby Voodoo? And what price a long memory? I'm sure that were we to revisit everyone of their long histories it would be quite a simple matter to send them mad."

At this point, the sun peeped into the room and the gathered women gasped, scuttling for their rooms to bath and dress. Hilda went with Nell and concealed herself in that woman's room, readying to leave while Mary-Lou took prayers - both at the same time, as she felt certain she could do it.

All right, just for you, Catherine.

The staff managed to conquer their tiredness and appeared much as normal at Fruehstueck. Once the meal was over, the school divided into the two groups and headed for Hall, which was separated so that the religions wouldn't need to be together.

Mary-Loud, as was her custom, arrived at the Catholic half first to find them quietly waiting and led them in the first prayer. As one of the Prefects began to play the first hymn, Mary-Loud slipped out of the door and hurried down the hall to the other door.

As soon as she was gone, Cecil Maynard lifted her hands off the keybard and reached up to get the small bottle of brandy she had concealed on the top of the piano. Meanwhile, the girls began to chatter among themselves, knowing that their voices would be covered by sounds of the pianola, which continued to play, this and another for the other group having been Hilda's 'parting gift' to the school.

A light had been installed above the dais, and as soon as Mary-Loud had left the room, Mlle de Lachenais flicked it, making the light in their room go off and warning the Protestants that the Head was on her way. The staff heaved a united sigh and relaxed in their chairs, chatting and laughing, until the light turned on, at which point they sat up properly again and waited for Mary-Loud to appear...

Title: Re: staff action FCS
Post by PatW on Dec 13th, 2003, 10:16pm
It did not take long for the attitude of the staff to come to the notice of the school at large, though the new Head seemed totally oblivious to the undercurrents swirling around the buildings.  The Sixth met in solemn conclave in the Prefects Room to discuss the matter.
"I'm very worried at the atmosphere in school this term." declared Angela Russell, Head Girl and grand-daughter of the schools Founder.  "I don't think the staff are happy at the apointment of Miss Trelawney as Head Mistress, and it's affecting their work.  We are supposed to be the Head's Representatives, but to be honest, I feel rather more in sympathy with the rest of the staff than perhaps I should do, especially as the appointment was made on the strong Recommendation of Aunty Jo.  Personlly I think she's gone off her rocker."

Sue Fennymore, the Games Prefect, grinned at her.  "I think you've hit the nail on the head, Angie.  The question is, what do we do?  Do we support the Head, or the staff?"

That night saw a group of Middles creeping down the airs to their common room, with sundry goodies to eat.  It had been a very long time since anyone had tried a midnight at the Chalet School, and they had decided that the time was now ripe to revive it.

Nancy Wilmot, coming back from the kitchen area after getting a drink of water, saw the procession and laughed quietly.  Then she went on her way back to her bedroom. The thought slipped into her head "Let the new Head deal with them - she thinks she can do anything."

The next morning Mary-Lou staggered downstairs, only half awake due to her broken night's sleep and the shock she had received on seeing her 'Gran'.  She opened the door to her office and stopped in amazement.  surely she was in the right place!  The head's office was in the Annexe, and that was where she was!  She walked back down the corridor to make sre, and satisfied that she was right, wnet back to her office again.  The same sight met her eyes.  Instead of the furnishings that were so familiar to her, she beheld rows of desk, with lockers along one wall.  The curtains had been replaced by blinds, and the original oil paintings normally hanging on the walls had been replaced by the prints generally found in the lower school form rooms.  Mary=Lou staggered to the room occupied by her Secretary, Rosalie Dene to demand from her an explanation.  Another form room met her confused gaze as she opened the door, and she stood there staring in perplexity, before sliding to the floor, still, grey, and to all appearances....

"Oh, stop it," Mary-Lou exclaimed, as Pat was about to write the last words. "It's always the same with you people, isn't it? Trite rubbish that was overused in the books themselves, and which you're sick of, too, but which you have to keep using!"
Pat turned a brilliant red and her hands dropped from the keyboard as if they had been burned. "Well, I can't help it that the stupid phrase is ingrained in the heads of all CBBers," she muttered.
"Of course you can," OOAO said, righteously indignant. "Now come up with something else! This has the potential to be a jolly good story - I've always wanted to be Head - but you're mucking it up!"

Oh goody goody guntrees!  I knew someone would rise to that one!!

At length, Mary-Lou stirred and groaned, raising her head slowly from the floor and finding to her stunned amazement that no one had come to help her.  She struggled to her feet, feeling distinctly dizzy and disorientated, and looked into the two rooms again, hoping that they had been miraculously restored to their normal selves.  However, they obstinately remained furnished as form rooms, so she turned and made her way towards the staff room, determined to find out what was going on.  When she found that room unchanged, she breathed a silent sigh of relief, and walked into the room, looking around to see who was there.  Spotting Rosalie pouring herself a cup of coffee from the percolator, she stalked over ot her.
"Rosalie, what has happended to my office, and yours tto, come tot hat?  They seem to have been turned into form rooms over night!"
"But you told Guadenz II to do that yourself, Miss Trelawney," responded Rosalie, with an extremely good imitation of surprise.  "Surely you remember that we needed two more form rooms, and you said that we could easily find somewhere else to work, that we didn't need so much space.?"
Mary-Lou could only stare at her, for naturaly, she remembered no such thing.

Mary-Lou desperately gathered her dignity about her.  "So just where am I supposed to have moved us, Rosalie?  I am sure that I gave no such order."
"You did, Miss Trelawney, I heard you myself."  Kathie Ferrars had entered the staff room in time to hear the end of the conversation, and spoke up to take some of the heat away from Rosalie, who was looking ready to choke.  Kathie was pretty sure that she kept a straight face only buy the tried and tested expediant of biting the insides of her cheeks.  "I think you'll find your things installed inthe store cupboard near the kitchens.  That's where you told Gaudenz to take them, anyway."

I tried - believe me!!  Neither of my daughters took to them.

Whilst ML was trying to figure out where her office had gone, Jo Maynard came tripping across the garden from Freudesheim to see how her protege was getting on.  As was her custom, she came straight to the French windows.  To her amazement, they were tightly locked, and pearing in, she saw the rows of desks that had so confused ML.  Frowning inpuzzlement, she made her way round to the main door, and proceeded down the corridor to the staff room.
"What's happened to the Head's office?" she cried as she walked into the room.
"Gaudenz moved it to one of the store rooms on Miss Trelawney's instructions." responded Rosalie.
"I'm sure I did no such thing!" shouted ML.  "Why have you moved my things to that pokey room?  It has no windows or ventilation."
Joey looked round the room, trying to work out what was going on.
"Gaudenz wouldn't move anything unless he was sure it was properly authorised."  Joey was plainly puzzled.

Gaundez, who was by now quite eldery but still quite capable of managing his job as school care taker and handyman, came shambling into the head's new study
"you wanted me" he asked bluntly
"i, um, yes" Mary Lou didn't sound too convinced
"can you explain this" Joey had no qualms about taking over the new head's role as she pointed round the small pokey room
"its the heads new study" Gaundez replied "it's how she wanted it" he pointed at Mary Lou
"i see" Joey said weakly
"but, i don't remember"
"look" Gaundez pulled out a request form from his overalls "you commanded this" his empahsis was on the word Commanded a since Mary lou had become head she had made a habit of leaving long lists of things to do which he and the school's cook Karen had nicknamed the 10 commandments.

Mary-Lou snatched the paper from his hands and looked at the writing.  It certainly seemed to be hers, and she looked at Joey in perplexity.
"It looks like my writing," she admitted, but I really don't remember writing it.  I mean, would I really want to move my office *here*?"  She looked around the small space in disgust.
"Do you need the form room space?" asked Jo.
"Yes we do, but that's no reason for moving the Head's office."
"Look Miss Trelawney, I just do as I am told.  Do you want me to move the whole lot back again.  If so, say so, and I'll get on with it.  If not, I've plenty of other things to be doing.  Not wasting my time standing here gossiping!"

Meanwhile Rosalie had slipped away from the heads new "office" to report back to the staff.  Giggling with the memory of Mary Lou's gobsmaked face she entered the staff room.

"Well" Nancy demanded
"like a charm" Rosalie replied "Gaundez was smashing"
Hilda raised her eyebrows at her former secretary's language
"did he show her the note?" Kathie asked
"yes, she just sat there looking at it like a stranded codfish"
"i don't know where you learnt to forge handwriting like that Rosalie"
"now come on, i've been Hilda's secretary for a lifetime, surely you don't think she writes or signs everything do you, I can do a pretty good sample of most of your handwriting, and for that matter the parents and the girls"

Mary-Lou collapsed into her chair, having had to squeeze behind the desk to reach it.
"I don't know what is happening to me, Jo," she said.  "Last night I heard what sounded like a group of Middles creeping about, but when I opened my door, I was confronted by Gran."
"But she's dead, Mary-Lou.  You can't have seen her!"
"Don't you think I know that?  I'm not suffering from memory loss!  At least, I didn't think so till I came downstairs and found my study converted into a form room, apparently on my orders.  Either I'm going bats, which I don't think I am, or something is happening.  I mean to find out before I'm very much older, or my name isn't Mary-Lou Trelawney!"
Jo looked at her doubtfully.  "If it wasn't your writing on that note, it was a pretty good forgery." she said.  "Who could have done that here?  We don't turn out criminals in the Chalet School!"

Here both women's mental speculations were interrupted by the entrance of Rosalie who was looking quite worried.

'Just a reminder, If you don't get off now, Miss Trelawney, you'll be late for your appointment in Interlaken. I'm afraid that you'll have to take the train after all, the school car won't start. We've tried everything we know, but it's no go, I'm afraid. The car seems to be as dead as a doornail. I'm afraid that our efforts to start it flooded the engine, but Miss Andrews can give you a lift to the station if you hurry. she has to be back for her classes.'
'Oh, I'll just borrow her car for the day' replied M-L with her usual insouciance.
'That won't be possible, she has to take some of the girls up to the San this afternoon. You know, the two girls with sprained ankles, they can't possibly walk.'
'Oh very well,' stormed OOAOML. 'I'll take a lift to the cable railway.'

Of course, what Rosalie was carefully hiding behind her apparant air of concern was that Kathie Ferrars had been very busy.....removing the rotor arm from the car, that is.

Additionally, there was naturally no appointment in Interlaken that day, or any other day, but Mary-Lou was by now so confused that she accepted Rosalie's statement as true.  It was only when she was sitting in the train, gliding gently down the side of the mountain, that she realised that she knew nothing of any appointment.  She had no idea where she was supposed to go when she reached the town, or what to do.  She was getting seriously afraid that the rest of the staff might start thinking that she was suffering from some sort of mental illness, and could not face the jolt to her reputation that this would entail.  Her mind started going round in circles, trying to find a logical explanation for everything that was happening to her.  That she was suffering from an agressive campaign run by her staff never crossed her mind.  Her belief in her own capabilities and popularity precluded any such suspicion reaching her consciouness.

As soon as Sharlie Andrews had returned from delivering their esteemed Headmistress to the station, Nancy Wilmot, who had already told Matey what she intended to do and received her enthusiastic agreement, went off to find that good lady, as Nancy was free for the first two lessons.

Nancy and Matey hurried along to OOAOML's private suite, and once there, it took Matey very little time to undo enough stitches in the side of the mattress. Nancy inserted the batteries into the clock which immediately began to tick loudly. They experimented with the best place to put the clock, finally deciding that just where the lower edge of the pillows came to would do the trick nicely. Having ensured that there was enough stuffing to cover the clock so the OOAOML would not feel its outlines under her, Matey sewed up the mattress again, remade the bed with her usual efficiency, and the pair left the room, satisfied that restful nights would not be on the Head's agenda for at least three weeks.
'You know, Matey,' said Nancy thoughtfully, 'The Arabs were right. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold.'

When the little train finally reached Interlaken, Mary-Lou got out and walked slowly up the platform, trying to decide what to do.  In the end she thought that if she went to a restaurant and indulged herself in a cup of the wonderful coffee they served, she would waste enough time to account for a meeting, and she could return to the school with no one the wiser.

She was jsut raising the cup of steaming coffee to her lips when she heard her name being called, and looked up into the smiling face of Biddy Courvoisier.  Biddy had been coopted into the conspiracy very early on, and her imp of wickedness, never far from the surface, and only kept under control by a rigid sense of right and wrong, was flying free.
"Hello Mary-Lou," she said.  "May I join you?  What happened to your appointment?  I thought it was a really vital one."
"oh, er, it was cancelled, but not until I'd already left the Platz."
Mary-Lou was beginning to feel a little sick, and the coffee certainly didn't taste up to its usual standard.

Joey Maynard had returned home to Freudeshiem after her meeting with Mary Lou seriously concerned at the young woman's attitude.  After all it wasn't usual for her to see ghosts, forget she had appointments or to request the most extrodinary things be done to her office.

'somewhere along the line' she thought to herself 'i wouldn't be at all surprised if the middles didn't have something to do with it'  She yawned widely as she let herself into the house and made her way to the study.  Ringing for Anna on the small bell on her desk she ordered coffee and cakes in an attempt to keep her awake.

She wasn't sure what was troubling her sleep but she kept waking during the night.  'i suppose it could be mice' she pondered completely inaccurately 'after all minette isn't a young cat any more'

Morning break was almost a riot in the Staffroom. The good ladies who comprised the Staff of the Chalet School had decided to award themselves an extended time in which to drink their coffee and eat the cakes which Karen had decided, for some reason known only to herself and the CBB'ers, to provide them with.

Rosalie had facilitated this by ensuring that the bell would not ring to bring the entire school back to its classrooms. When she had opened the door of the fuse-box cupboard so that she could remove the appropriate fuse, she had been surprised to find a large, brawny arm reaching in over her shoulder, and heard the words, Excuse me, gnadiges Fraulein, it is my job to remove the fuses. An hour, yes?'

She grinned at Gaudenz, saying, 'That will be fine, thank you. I suppose that the interruption to the electricity supply will be mended by then.'

'Of course. Enjoy your break Fraulein Rosalie.'

She grinned at him again, and made her way back to the Staffroom, where she was greeted enthusiastically, and pointed to a chair.

'Now Ladies' said Nell Wilson who had come over from the Millies to join them,' Let's get on with the next phase of our plans.'

"I don't have a suggestion as such, but i do have a strong hunch that the school is behind our endeavors, and in fact will be aiding and abetting us.  I suggest we employ the Nelson tactic when it comes to their misdeeds, and turn a blind eye.  I believe another rather famous school based in England adopted a similar tactic when they had an unsuitable Head foisted upon them."  This from Miss Lwrence, famed for her law abiding attitude in all things.

'Well, we'd better make sure that our esteemed new Headmistress gives him plenty to think about and analyse when he comes here to be interviewed.'  replied Kathie Ferrars.

'Now, ladies, we've still got forty minutes left, what next in the disorientation campaign?

'The alarm clock is safely placed in her bed,' replied Nancy Wilmot. 'Matey, bless her, helped me with that. Someone suggested that we used the old snails on the windows trick. Do you think that she will realise what is causing the noise too quickly, or will she be so foggy from lack of sleep that she won't realise what it is?'

I think that might be enough to be going on with.' said Nell Wilson. 'Oh, I know that you're all very keen to get rid of her, but if we pile too much on at one time, she might get suspicious. Plus, she'll go runing to Jo, and then she'll start interfering. No, I think that it's going to be a case of 'Softlee, softlee catchee monkey.'Oh yes, it's disappointing, I know, but, we really do need a few more days to get our plans together. We've made a good start, let's let things work on her for the time being, and implement the next phase just before the weekend.'

They all realised how sensible Nell's contribution had been, and agreed to her timetable.

They had been so busy with this that they had not heard the Staffroom door open,so they were all startled when thy heard Hilda Annersley's cool tones  sayng' I see that the power cut that the school is experiencing has not affected the staffrom coffee-maker. Well done, Ladies. Now, where have you all got to with your plans?'

Biddy looked slighly at the pretty watch on her wrist, if she could only keep Mary Lou talking for another 5 minutes then there was no way she could get a train back up to the school for three ours.  Biddy herself wouldn't be troubled by this as Eugen had bought her down in the car, which was currently parked out of the way at the hospital.

She wasn't really listening as the completely self absorbed young lady in front of her pounded out her therorys for the betterment of the school.  Biddy simply kept nodding and smiling her encouragement and as ever the sound of her own voice kept Mary Lou prattling on.

"anyway, I suppose i had better get back to school" Biddy's eyes twinkled as she heard this
"of course" she replied politely as she stood up to leave "i should be going as well"

Mary Lou made her way back to the station and looked at the departures board with horror. Not only had she come down for a meeting she knew nothing about but now couldn't get back to school.  Her night of broken sleep was catching up with her and as she sat on the station trying to work out what to do next she fell asleep

"I think we should try and keep Jo away from her" Bill added "we can do without her interferring"
