Title: The Real Chalet School (mark 4)

(Lesley raises head above parapet - hoping 4th installment of her thread will not cause entire board to die!)

*Real CS is archived - suggest you read Real CS mk 2 as I am repeating only 2 installments of 3 before continuing story.*

Please note house icon to website has all of Real CS without any comments - easier to read!

In the early hours of the morning, Miss Annersley lay staring up at the ceiling of the tent she was sharing with Nell Wilson. Unable to sleep, she decided to get up and go for a short walk. Outside the night air was warm and, on looking up, Miss Annersley saw that it was a clear night – the moon and stars were out in force. The rest of the campsite - arranged with some precision by Miss Wilson, despite the camp not being a Guide camp – was quiet and no one else was stirring. Miss Annersley wandered over to the kitchen area, past the tents inhabited by Karen and her staff. Near the entrance to the kitchens she saw that a single boiler was alight, next to it were a few mugs, coffee and some dried milk, she helped herself to a coffee and, sipping the brew, walked over to stare out at the mountains.

The moonlight was bright enough to see the peaks in the distance and it seemed that, even here, nowhere close to the edge of the Platz, their outlines were becoming more indistinct. As she was watching them she heard a soft footfall, and looked around to see the author herself.

“Viewing my handiwork, Hilda?”

Miss Annersley shook her head; “you are not responsible for mountains Elinor, that is the work of a far higher power than any author.”

“But this is my world, therefore those mountains are my creation,”

“No, they are merely copies from the Real World.” Miss Annersley looked over at the author, “are you here to threaten again Elinor? Or perhaps to punish?”

“Neither, I only wanted to talk, it seems that, whatever I do, just encourages you to continue your rebellion. I would like to discuss that.”

“There is nothing to discuss, Elinor, I will do my utmost to ensure that all the people here have the opportunity to escape to the Real World. You see, unlike you, I see these people as people, whereas you see them as characters in your book.”

“Suppose I allowed some out, would those of you left behind then return to obedience?”

“That’s not feasible, Elinor, I could not make that decision as to who would stay, and in any case, from those left behind you would repopulate the entire School. No, my intention is for everyone to leave.”

“You may find that impossible, Hilda.”

Miss Annersley turned away from EBD and walked back to the kitchen, pausing only to refill her mug, she made her way back to her tent.

On entering the tent she saw that Nell Wilson was awake, “Hilda? What’s the matter?”

Miss Annersley knelt beside her friend’s bed, “nothing Nell, I just couldn’t sleep, that’s all!”

Miss Wilson looked somewhat guilty, “I’ll swap with you in the morning,” she said, “you can have the camp bed,”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Oh no, Nell Wilson, I’m not going to salve your conscience that easily.” She paused for a moment before continuing, “I don’t think it was the lilo that caused me to be awake, Nell, I think it was the situation – I told you – I’ve never been camping before.”

She took a sip of her coffee then offered the mug to her friend; Nell Wilson drank deeply before returning the mug.

“Elinor is out there,” Hilda Annersley remarked softly,

“Is she? Pity, I’d hoped we had left her back at the School,”

“She was in a strange mood, perhaps it’s because of the hour,” Miss Annersley drained the rest of her drink and placed the mug on the floor, “Nell, may I ask you something?”

Miss Wilson, in the process of settling back down to sleep looked up, “of course, Hilda, what is it?”

“If, when, we succeed in escaping to the Real World, if I don’t make it, you will take over, won’t you? Look after everyone, be Madge’s second and everything?” Miss Annersley’s voice had a strange intensity.

Miss Wilson looked over at her friend, puzzled, “I’m your deputy remember?” she said softly, “you reminded me of that some weeks ago, of course I’ll take over.” She smiled, “but you’re worrying about nothing, we’ll all make it!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “yes, I’m sure you’re right. Tell me Nell, does Australia have mountains?”

“What? Mountains? Yes, Australia has mountains.” Miss Wilson’s voice was very sleepy now.

“Do they ever have snow on them?”

There was no answer, Miss Wilson was asleep. Miss Annersley smiled and retired to her bed, she was asleep within minutes.

The following morning, the dark mood of the night before dispelled by the sunshine, saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson out early, walking around the camp. The kitchen staff were up and about with Karen directing traffic like a ringmaster in a circus. One of the many items purchased by Miss Wilson was an industrial size hot plate, therefore the kitchen staff were placing all items on there for a self service breakfast. Miss Annersley spoke to Karen, reminding her that she and her staff were also on holiday and should have plenty of time off.

There were no bells rung - everyone could be up whenever they wished - however Fruhstuck was only served between 7.00-9.30hrs, therefore those who wished to eat would be up at a reasonable time! The two Heads went to view the mountains again.

“It’s definitely getting worse, Hilda,”

“Agreed, I just wish I knew what it means,”

“You don’t think Elinor is responsible then?” Miss Wilson turned a questioning look to the Head,

Miss Annersley shook her head, “no, her reply was too hesitant, I don’t think she knows what it is either!”

At that point the Head Girl came up to join them, “Miss Wilson?” she said, “you said you wanted to see me about something?”

“Oh yes, Alison, be with you in a minute,” Miss Wilson replied absently.

The Head Girl came up to stand level with both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, “it’s strange isn’t it?” she said, “Carol told me about it, she said it appeared the day after you were resuscitated Miss Wilson, and then disappeared a couple of days after the paint ball contest,”

“It reappeared two weeks later apparently,” Miss Annersley added, “the day after we converted everyone back…” she stopped suddenly, thinking furiously.

Miss Wilson drew the Head Girl to one side and gave her a few instructions, Alison nodded and ran off.

“That’s it,” Miss Annersley sounded satisfied,

“What’s it, Hilda?”

“The mystery of the timing, Nell,” Miss Annersley pointed toward the fading mountain, “That thing appears to have started the day we stopped behaving like the Chalet School, there was a two week hiatus when Elinor attempted to re-write the story - the mountains returned to normal - then, ever since, the condition has been growing steadily.”

“But what does it mean?”

“That I do not know Nell, but it seems to be related to our behaviour, whether that’s a good thing or not, only time will tell.”

CONVERSATION IN CYBERSPACE

xanthe
Well I’ve made a start at the university - it’s the same one KB went to so she’s helped me out with a few bits. Not sure I’m supposed to be logging on via their computers - but it’ll only be for a short time.

Rachael P
Good to hear from you again xanthe!

Catherine
Hi everyone - Carolyn P has just been in contact - they want me to start at the Real Chalet School as an infants teacher!

Laura_T
I’m going out there as a student as soon as the term times are arranged!

austriaamy
Me too! Perhaps we can arrange to travel together! What’s the weather like over there, anyone?

Chloe
It’s quite warm and sunny, though it can change really quickly.

Catherine B
Sounds better than the weather they’re having in Switzerland at the moment - apparently all around Interlaken there have been huge electrical storms - even for the Alps they’re supposed to be spectacular!

xanthe
BTW has anyone seen Lesley on the board recently? She sent me a pm some time ago but nothing since.

Rachael P
She’s busy writing her book at the moment, xanthe - plus I think she was a little worried  about being blamed for the entire drabble board collapsing!

                                                          …

After a Staff Meeting Carolyn spoke to Madge Russell,

“You know what you said, a little while back, about how the Old and New Chalet School should be brought closer together?”

Madge nodded.

“Well, as a start, how about a beach party? It seems to be the common thing in Australia - and you’ve always been keen to embrace the culture of whatever country the Chalet School is based in!”

The Head looked intrigued, “exactly what would it entail?” she asked.

“Well, obviously on the beach - and now you’ve hired those professional lifeguards that won’t be a problem, and we’ll arrange the food and entertainment ourselves,”

“We?” Madge was intrigued,

“The CBBer’s - at least those of us who have moved here to join you!”

“It sounds good - will two weeks on Saturday be suitable? That should give you time to arrange things,”

“No problem, oh and be prepared to do more DJ’ing - we heard about your role on Saturday with the Middle School!”

The Head blushed!

I made Madge blush!

I never expected to be able to do that. Do I get a prize?

Thanks Lesley.

Good idea about the website, I might have a word with D about that myself. Hmmm.

*Next installment!*

The first full day of camp was a great success! Miss Annersley had announced to the entire group after Fruhstuck, that the two week’s camp was aimed toward having as much fun as possible, and that the teaching Staff and domestic personnel intended to join in with the fun. There were a number of different activities to try out, apart from the bouncy castle and swimming pool, there was rock climbing, canoeing and abseiling. There was also the possibility of an open air concert and firework display later in the week!

Miss Ferrars then stood up to announce that that afternoon it was intended to have a group activity in which everyone would take part - a water fight! She had managed to order 200 pump action water pistols - this was a surprise to Miss Annersley who later discovered that both Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilson had conspired to ensure she was out of her Study at the time! It was decided that there should be two gigantic teams to fight the war! Miss Derwent then stood up to propose that the two Team Captains should be the two Heads. At this Miss Wilson grinned and accepted while Miss Annersley protested that she had been planning to watch!

“Oh no, Miss Annersley,” Miss Wilson spoke for everyone, “you have just said that the teaching Staff intended to join in the fun, you cannot now say that you intended to except yourself! After all what sort of example would that set for the School?” Miss Wilson then burst out laughing at the expression on her friend’s face as Miss Annersley reluctantly acquiesced.

The picking of teams took some time, especially as both Heads wanted to have as mixed a team as possible - with girls from both the School proper and St Mildred’s, as well as both domestic and teaching Staff thoroughly mixed. Among other choices however, Miss Annersley picked Kathie Ferrars, while Miss Wilson chose Rosalind Moore. The two teams departed to opposite ends of a large fields for talks on tactics before commencing battle.

“Miss Annersley we have a great advantage over the opposing team,” Miss Ferrars said when all the team were gathered around.

The Head looked up, “I wouldn’t have thought either side had an advantage Miss Ferrars,” she said softly, “We have exactly the same number of people in each side.”

“Yes, Miss Annersley, but no-one on their side will dare shoot at you!” Kathie Ferrars grinned, and the rest of the team murmured their agreement.

Miss Annersley smiled, “As a matter of fact I believe there is one member of the opposing team who will dare shoot at me - but we may be able to use that. After all the rules of the game are that the last one standing wins the game for their team!”

The chalet school personnel had all changed into tracksuit,  tee-shirts and trainers, these unfamiliar clothes were immediately pronounced extremely suitable by the girls and younger staff, although some of the older Staff were less enthusiastic!  The water pistols were filled with coloured water - Miss Annersley’s team had red water, Miss Wilson’s blue, and each person could only fill their water pistol once - no refills were allowed - once a person had used up their quota of water they would not be able to take any further part in the game and would be a sitting duck for anyone on the opposing team!

Once a person was stained by the water they were out of the game - and as the water could not be washed off without a special solvent left back at the camp, it was very easy to see those already hit. Once out of the game people could become spectators, but were not allowed to help their team mates - only to yell encouragement!

Although Team Captain, Miss Annersley deferred to Miss Ferrars in matters of tactics and the younger mistress quickly divided the large team into smaller squads, Miss Wilson, helped out by Alison Martin, did the same. As there were so many people taking part the teams were differentiated by sashes - Miss Annersley’s sash colour being red, Miss Wilson’s blue.

Title: At a given sigRe:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)

*Next installment!*

At a given signal the battle began! To begin with the resulting melee appeared totally without shape however gradually patterns began to emerge. The directing teams from each army stayed back away from the main battle, each team guarded by a group of ‘soldiers’ responsible for ensuring that their leaders were protected and able to continue giving instruction. The Team Captains were, obviously, a part of this team.

The first casualties were Miss Derwent and Louise Chad - each had been directing their respective opposing squads and suddenly come upon one another. Their shots hit at exactly the same time, both hitting across their tea-shirts! This was the signal for firing to begin in earnest and Miss Derwent and Louise hastily conferred before deciding to be responsible for pulling people out of the game - in their excitement the participants were not always aware that they had been hit!

The battle, which had started an hour after Mitagessen, continued through the afternoon; gradually the number of people actually participating dropped as more and more were hit. Some of those hit had made the elementary mistake of shooting all their water and were then easily picked off. The two Heads had not participated a great deal - indeed Miss Wilson had yet to fire her pistol! Miss Annersley had been responsible for shooting a few of the opposing team - chiefly those who, having managed to get close to the Head, had proven the truth of Kathie Ferrars’ statement when faced with a calm gaze from those blue-grey eyes! While they found it impossible to fire, the Head did not!

Eventually, after almost two hours, the final surviving players were revealed, Miss Wilson walked over to join Miss Annersley in the centre of the field. All the spectators strained to hear their words.

“Well Miss Wilson, we appear to be the last on the field,” Miss Annersley’s voice was amused, “would you settle for an honourable draw?”

Miss Wilson looked at the water pistol her friend carried, the gauge was empty, she looked at her own pistol and saw that it was full.

“I don’t think so, Miss Annersley,” Miss Wilson had a wide grin on her face while saying this, “after all, last one standing wins the game! And it seems I have a full water pistol to discharge. It seems a pity to waste it!” With that she raised her water pistol to totally drench the Head from head to foot! The blue dye ensured that Miss Annersley was covered!

There was complete silence from everyone as they watched this, then Miss Annersley slowly looked down at her self before throwing back her head and laughing, the rest of the spectators joined in! Once the laughter had died down Miss Wilson lifted her now empty gun and said..

“As the last one standing, I declare that the blue team has…” she stopped suddenly as Miss Annersley shook her head.

From their hiding place at the rear of the field, behind some trees, three more members of the red team appeared. They slowly walked up to stand next to the Head.

Miss Wilson stared across at them in shock, “last on the field, you said,” she addressed Miss Annersley,

“Yes,” agreed Miss Annersley, “but these three were not on the field. They are my irregular troops!”

The first of the three lifted her gun and fired a short burst, it caught the St Mildred’s Head on her left shoulder.

“Red team wins!”

You are putting me to shame Lesley, and you Catherine. Both of you had lots to post tonight, and I've written nothing since my last post before we did all the archiveing.

I had guessed that Miss A had a plot up her sleeve and thought it might be something like that. I'm suprised Bill was caught out so easily, or is there more to come?

*Little baby post! No Bill wasn't fooled!*

Miss Wilson smiled across at her friend, “how long have we known each other, Hilda?” She did not appear to be upset at losing, if anything she was smiling even more now.

“More years than I care to remember Nell!” came the reply, “Why do you ask?”

“Well don’t you think that I may have guessed your plan? After all, you sacrificing yourself for the greater good, I should almost expect it!” Miss Wilson raised her voice so she could be heard by all the spectators, “these troops are not irregular troops for the red team, they are spies for the blue team!”

The three girls with red sashes turned to Miss Annersley, the Head recognised Alison Martin and two of her Prefects, she knew that she had chosen none of them! She smiled, “I stand corrected,” she said softly, “it seems that the blue team have won!” she bowed to Miss Wilson, “Brilliant!”

*Next installment - giggle!*

At the Head’s words there was an outbreak of cheering from members of the blue team! Everyone slowly made their way back toward the camp where there was a rush for the showers! Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked back into camp and stood near the bouncy castle and pool, watching the activity.

“Aren’t you going to change, Hilda? After all you did get drenched!”

“Yes, Nell, I’m well aware of that!” Miss Annersley looked up at the cloudless sky, “I would estimate the temperature as high 80’s, possibly more - there’s no chance of a chill then - I’ll wait until there’s less of a queue.”

“Well at least you have one comfort Hilda,” Miss Wilson’s voice held suppressed laughter, “you’re the only person I know who can still look dignified when covered in blue dye from head to foot!”

Miss Annersley smiled across at her friend, “yes I noticed that you only have a small red mark on your shoulder – and even that was fired by someone on your own team!”

“Thought it would be a fitting end, Hilda,” came the reply, “allow you to think you’d won for a moment before dashing your hopes!”

“Your people caught mine I assume?”

“They did, and confiscated their sashes and pistols – rules said nothing against it after all!”

“Well no, but then I believe you made up the rules!”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “Hilda, you shouldn’t be bitter – just because I could inspire greater creativity and loyalty in my troops than you could in yours!” The St Mildred’s Head grinned.

Miss Annersley stared across at Miss Wilson for a moment before stopping a passing Fifth Former, “Mary my dear, would you find the Head Girl and ask her and her two companions from the water fight to come over here please?”

Miss Wilson looked puzzled, “Why do you want to speak to Alison?”

“Just checking something!”

A few minutes later Alison Martin and the other two Prefects appeared.

“Alison, may I ask if the reason Miss Wilson wanted to speak to you this morning had anything to do with the water fight today?” The Head’s voice was soft.

Alison shook her head, “No, Miss Annersley, it was about something totally different,”

Nell Wilson smiled, “I couldn’t arrange anything until after teams had been picked, Hilda,”

“I know that, I was just checking,” was the calm reply. The Head turned back to the Head Girl, “Miss Wilson and I were discussing loyalty, Alison, I wonder if you and your colleagues could demonstrate loyalty for me?”

“Of course, Miss Annersley,” Alison looked rather puzzled,

“Excellent,” Miss Annersley glanced over at her friend with dancing eyes, “then would you please throw Miss Wilson into the pool!”

Title: At the Head’s Re:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)

*And again!*

There was a stunned silence, then the Head Girl and her two companions all grinned and advanced on Miss Wilson.

“Now, Hilda, don’t be hasty, there’s no need for this!” Miss Wilson was backing away rapidly,

“Just demonstrating loyalty, Nell!” the calm reply.

“Well, OK, you’ve made your point,” Miss Wilson was looking around for an avenue of escape but found herself surrounded, “this is unlike you – you always temper justice with mercy remember?”

“Occasionally I prefer simply justice, Nell!”

Miss Wilson gave up attempting to influence her friend and instead turned to the three girls,  “all three of you take Science,” she began, “you wouldn’t want a poor grade now would you?”

Miss Annersley shook her head; “I will immediately raise their grades to excellent, Nell!”

Miss Wilson now had her back to the pool, with the three girls arranged in front of her; there was a large crowd of people watching, the crowd was made up of girls from both the School itself and St Mildred’s as well as domestic and teaching Staff.

“Alison, will you require any help?” Miss Annersley asked softly.

“We may, Miss Annersley,”

The Head turned to the watching crowd, “any of you that wishes to help please join in!”

At her words there was a rush forward and, within seconds, Miss Wilson had been picked up and thrown into the pool! She surfaced almost immediately, giggling, and swam to the side. The crowd all slowly dispersed.

Miss Annersley walked over to the side of the pool and reached a hand down to help her friend back out.

“By rights I should pull you in here with me!” Miss Wilson grinned, holding onto the steps rail with one hand,

“It would not make me any wetter than I am already,” smiled her friend. She grasped Nell’s hand and pulled, Miss Wilson rose up to sit on the side of the pool.

“So that was you demonstrating loyalty was it?” Miss Wilson was wringing out her thick, white hair while asking this.

“Yes,” Miss Annersley replied, “and one other trait,” she paused for a moment then continued, “that of an autocratic ruler!”

“Hah!”

The two Heads slowly made their way back to their tent intending to join the queue for the showers.

“You didn’t ask why I wanted to speak to Alison this morning Hilda,” Miss Wilson stopped just outside their tent, “I needed something from the School, if you’ll look inside I’ll show you,”

Miss Annersley walked inside and stopped – where her bed space had contained her sleeping bag on top of a lilo, it was now different – her sleeping bag now lay on a mattress. She turned to look at her friend.

“Well I can’t have you not sleeping!” Miss Wilson smiled, “it disturbs me if you go in and out of the tent!”

“Thank you, my dear,” Miss Annersley’s voice was amused, “are we even for the moment?”

“For the moment, Hilda!”

That evening the two Heads went for a walk, back at the camp they left most of the staff and girls playing board games - when these had first been suggested everyone had felt they would be very tame and boring, especially after the excitement of the water fight earlier. Their opinions had started to change on hearing the names of these games, Taboo, Balderdash, Pictionary, and Pass the Bomb. There were others! Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson could still hear the shrieks of laughter from the camp, even though they had been walking steadily for 20 minutes.

“Nell, I never did tell you exactly what Elinor said last night,” Miss Annersley began soberly.

Miss Wilson looked across at her friend, “I gather it wasn’t just more of the same?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “no, she actually proposed allowing some to leave if the rest would return to the old ways! I refused immediately, said I couldn’t choose who would stay or go. But perhaps I shouldn’t have been so quick, after all it would mean that at least some of you would escape.”

“And those left behind would rot!” Miss Wilson’s reply was swift, “No, Hilda, you were right to refuse, it would mean she could build everything back up to how it was before Christmas - before Robin or the Middles or anything!”

Miss Annersley nodded, “yes, I know that’s the case really, it’s just that it was a very unusual proposal. Not one I ever expected to hear from Elinor - she is not normally the most subtle of people.”

“It almost seems as though she is scared of something,” Miss Wilson returned, with one accord the two Heads turned to look out at the mountains once more. The evening was clear and warm and, being mid-July, still very light. Even in the short time since their viewing that morning they could see that there had been a significant change. Most of the mountain range was now indistinct and, in some places, absent completely.

Melbourne

At the Russells’ breakfast table.

Madge Russell finished her tea and glanced over at her husband, Jem Russell was buried in a day old copy of the London Times and, of all pages, seemed to be particularly interested in weather reports!

“Jem you’ve been reading that paper for the last hour,” Madge’s voice was a little sharp, “what on earth is so intriguing?”

“Sorry Madge,” Jem surfaced from the paper rather guiltily, “I’ve been reading these reports of the weather in Europe - there are some strange things happening over there.”

“What things?”

“Severe electrical storms all around Interlaken, far more severe than anything even the Swiss authorities have seen since their records began, and, what’s even stranger, the anomalies has spread to other parts of Europe, there are reports of the same types of storms in Austria, Wales and Hereford in England. There’s even a small storm reported somewhere in the Channel Islands.”

“What do they think it is?” Madge was intrigued - mainly due to their connection with Interlaken,

“Not sure yet - some of the experts are putting it down to this Global Warming thing.”

Title: “Well put downRe:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)

*Next - back to Melbourne - thanks to KB for info!*

“Well put down the paper for now, we have a full day ahead,” Madge was brisk, “you will be coming to the beach party this afternoon now won’t you?”

“Of course, I’ll arrange for the CBBer’s on staff to arrive about 2pm - the golf club is not fully open yet so we can afford to allow them the time off!”

Madge looked across at her husband, “is the golf club going to be a viable concern Jem?”

“Most definitely, my dear, we have lists of potential members at least double the number we considered the minimum to turn a profit - with the fees we will be able to expand into other areas of the leisure market - fitness gym, pool etc.” Jem smiled, “I never thought anything would interest me in the same way that medicine did, but this business is intriguing, and with the emphasis changing from purely golf to fitness in general I can feel that not all my medical training is wasted! Even though I’ve had to learn a number of changes - I’ll never forget reading all the evidence about smoking all those months ago - I’m glad that I managed to give up the things - hate to think of the damage I inadvertently did to my patients back in the Chalet School world!”

Jem kissed his wife on the cheek and left the breakfast room.

The beach party was counted as an excellent way of introducing modern day, and particularly Australian, culture to the original Chalet School members. As well as the ‘normal’ barbeque hamburgers, sausages, chicken and kebabs, a whole host of traditionally Australian foods had been prepared including kangaroo and emu, plus a number of native fruits and nuts - macadamias and quandongs.

The Australian members of Staff and the few pupils who had already enrolled at the School fell on these with relish and the modern Staff, pupils and other workers were fairly quickly persuaded to try them - the modern palate being far more used to dishes from all over the world. It took a little more time for the original members of the Chalet School to try them - eventually some of the Fourth Form did and pronounced them delicious!

Madge, taking the time to speak to the Senior Housekeeper, Jennie, mentioned something that had been of some concern, “seeing what the girls are eating here, Jennie,” she began, “I do wonder at all our strict rules with regard to their diet when at the original school,”

“I think, Madge, when you go back, you’ll find a lot of that came from EBD and Matron Lloyd,” replied Jennie, “in my experience I would think the stomach of the average 14 year old could double as a nuclear waste disposal outlet!”

As well as the food, there was a disco on the beach and the Headmistress of the Real Chalet School repeated her performance as disc jockey - she was getting rather good! Everyone could also go swimming or avail themselves of the karaoke equipment!

By the end of the evening the CBBer’s counted themselves pleased at the results of their hard work - seeing all girls and Staff of the Real Chalet School, regardless of country of origin, age or member of fictional or modern world, joining together to sing Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive!’, while eating sausage sandwiches and drinking Coke - this was considered the ultimate accolade!”

An image that never fails to crack me up! Lesley, it's wonderful and I'm so glad that you thought of it! I do hope that she'll do it at the celebrations when all of this is finally resolved and can shock the European contingent of the CS!

*Wouldn't be the last scene KB - I've already written that - but a possibility for earlier on! Next!*

The School Camp proceeded smoothly through the next week or so, Staff and Girls doing their best to think up more and more ridiculous things to do - things that would never have been considered in the Chalet School - the concert went well - a portable generator had been set up and electrical power was available, the entertainers had been practicing for the last few weeks with music downloaded from the Net and were able to play both old and new music. That particular evening ended in a great sing-a-long, with accompaniment by rhythm guitars and drums!

“Almost a traditional end to the day!” Miss Wilson had remarked to Miss Annersley just before they had divided for Prayers.

“Almost,” her friend replied, “except I don’t think Elinor even considered the possibility of our singing, ‘Do your ears hang low?’ at camp!”

"Well, not with those words anyway!"

There had been some discussion between the two Heads about Prayers in general and about the need to divide into Catholic and Protestant. The night before going away on camp they had spoken of it while in Miss Annersley’s Study.

“According to Madge, religion, at least in the Western World, has become far less ’popular’ for the ordinary people.” this from Miss Annersley, “church congregations, both Protestant and Catholic, are falling and people are either turning to faiths we would consider to be unusual in the extreme, or to the other established faiths in the world - Muslim, Buddhism, etc. or no faith whatsoever.”

“Perhaps Hilda, but I cannot suddenly decide to change faith - even though I know it was mapped out for me by Elinor, I cannot suddenly say that I don’t have that faith, because I do!”

“Understood Nell, I feel the same, but I’m wondering about the School as a whole, it may be that some of the girls - or even possibly the Staff, may have different thoughts on the subject. Should we still continue with the rigid demarcation of Protestant and Catholic and not allow any of the others to develop an interest in a different faith or religion? After all, a basic tenet for both our faiths is supposed to be tolerance!”

“Well what if we continue with the dividing for Prayers but make it clear to everyone that attendance is not mandatory? We can still keep Grace at meal times but make it one that would apply not only to God but to any other ’higher being’, otherwise though allow everyone to make up their own minds!”

These thoughts had been acted upon, the Heads had been pleasantly surprised to discover that more than 80% of the people still attended Prayers.

*Next - not nice!*

Halfway through the second week, a gigantic firework display had been arranged. The entire camp moved back to the field where they had previously held the water fight. Along one end, all the fireworks were set up ready to be lit. This was a St Mildred’s affair - the girls from St Mildred’s ordering the fireworks from a catalogue Miss Wilson had downloaded from the Net. The display was taking part at night and, by ten pm (2200hrs) the night sky was completely dark. Around the outskirts of the field and at set intervals across it, were strung lanterns so that people could see and be seen. In addition the kitchen staff has arranged for a large vat of tomato soup, crusty bread and mugs were available for people to help themselves. There was also coffee and hot chocolate to drink.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson joined the rest of the crowd just before the display was about to start, they had each been given a number of sparklers to light later in the evening.

“I thought you would be up there at the front Nell,” Miss Annersley remarked, “As this is a St Mildred’s affair.”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “none of the mistresses are involved, Hilda, the girls wanted to do something totally unsupervised. All I did was obtain the fireworks for them - and judging by the things they ordered I would think this is going to be spectacular - if rather noisy!”

‘The words were not totally accurate, I would have thought exceptionally noisy would have been closer!’ thought Miss Annersley, halfway through the display when one particular firework had exploded with such force that it had probably been heard in Interlaken! ’Or, at least, ’ she qualified, ’would have been heard had we not been isolated!’ The display was however spectacular with the rockets in particular lighting up the night sky with fountains of multi-coloured flowers of light.

Suddenly, halfway through a display of giant catherine wheels, everything went dark as the lanterns and the fireworks all went out. The two Heads looked around in some surprise but before they could react a small light at the top of a nearby cliff suddenly illuminated the figure of the Author. As everyone looked up at the source of light, four girls, carrying lanterns, pushed there way through the crowds to place the lanterns in a square around Miss Annersley. The Head recognised the four girls were being controlled and turned to remark her observation to her friend. Miss Wilson, along with everyone else, however, was being forced to take steps back, leaving the Head, alone, in the centre of a square of light, in an otherwise dark field. Miss Annersley straightened and turned toward the author.

There was silence, EBD’s gaze swept around all the Chalet School personnel. “I believe I have been more than patient with all of you, “ she said quietly, but her voice, nevertheless had the knack of carrying to everyone in the field, “I have, however, warned you on countless occasions about exactly what I do, and do not, expect from my chalet school characters. Now your Headmistress has reminded me on previous meetings that she bears the responsibility for the School’s behaviour, I will therefore show all of you my displeasure by attacking her. I sincerely hope it will act as a warning to all of you!”

*Sorry too long!*

Everyone watched in silence as Miss Annersley was suddenly struck with a pain so severe that it drove her to her knees, her hands reaching up to her head in a fruitless attempt to stave off the agony. She did not utter a sound, instead biting her lips until they bled, those nearest, including Miss Wilson, could see tears of pain running down her face. She leant forwards, resting her hands and head on the grass, almost instinctively attempting to curl into a ball.

The tableau continued for some minutes, those closest to the Head, held in place, unable to go to her aid. Closer to the outskirts there was some freedom of movement but no way of pushing through the crowds to offer help. All of a sudden a few of the older girls and Staff, all near the base of the cliff, started throwing objects up at the author in an attempt to distract her. Most of the objects fell far too short, but one, thrown by Louise Chad, hit EBD on the side of her face, knocking her to the ground.

The control over everyone suddenly vanished and Miss Wilson rushed over to kneel beside her friend and place an arm around her shoulders. Still curled up, the Head was white but managed to whisper a few words, “tell her Nell, we don’t stop!”

Miss Wilson nodded and rose, the look in her face caused those standing closest to take an involuntary step backwards, they had never seen her look so angry! She looked up at the author, EBD was standing once more, her hand pressed to the side of her face,

“Elinor, be thankful that you cannot be seriously harmed by your creations!” Bill’s voice was colder than anyone had ever heard before, “otherwise I’d be on my way up there to throw you off of that cliff! We will no longer be dictated to by you, your attempts to coerce us into playing your characters will not work, all you do is stiffen our resolve to defy you. We will escape this world and we will join Madge Russell in Australia. You cannot stop us!”

The author looked down on a defiant crowd all repeating Miss Wilson’s words, she turned and walked away without a word. The crowd remained silent, watching as Miss Wilson knelt beside her friend once more. “Help me up, Nell,” again the lowest of whispers, “let them see that I’m fine,”

Miss Wilson leant closer to whisper back, “but you’re not ‘fine‘, Hilda!”

A slight smile, “that can remain our secret!”

Miss Wilson helped the Head to stand, Miss Annersley was deathly pale and there was a small trickle of blood running from her lip. She leant heavily on her friend who tried to make it seem that she was just lightly holding her.

“Thank you, to those who broke Elinor’s concentration,” the Head’s voice was very quiet and her words were repeated back to everyone in the field, “and for your continual defiance. Please continue the display, I’ll be back once I’ve had a chance to recover properly.”

Holding onto her friend, Miss Annersley walked off to the side of the field to sit beneath the trees, out of sight of the girls and Staff.

I have really, really bad premonitions about what's going to happen to Hilda.  If Madge is enjoying being Headmistress so much, how would she & everyone else cope if the Abbess turned up?

...but she's the best character!  Argh!

I think that Madge would do the decent thing. After all the strain that Hilda has been going through, isn't it time that she had a nice long rest, and an all-expenses paid trip round Australia, before coming back to the CS to a good, well-paid position, such as Director of Studies? They often have such a position in independent schools, and the post-holder has a lot of responsibility.

*Next!*

Once there Miss Annersley placed her head in her hands once more and sat there taking deep breathes, Miss Wilson, looking over at her friend frequently, started pacing up and down the small clearing. A noise from the trees caused both of them to look up and then relax as Barbara Herschell appeared carrying two coffees and a small bag.

“One of the Prefects was on her way over with these, so I said I’d take them,” she said briskly, “I also think, Hilda, that you could do with a drop of this,” she removed a small bottle from the bag and held it up, it had medicinal brandy written on the bottle. “Contrary to expectations the brandy is very good,” Barbara continued with a grin, “it should be, it’s Napoleon, bought last time I was in France!” She removed a small medicine glass from the bag and filled it with brandy, “drink this, Hilda!” she ordered.

Miss Annersley took the glass in shaking hands and managed to drink the spirit, grimacing slightly, there was a slight effect as a very small amount of colour returned to her cheeks. Matron Herschell looked more closely at her Head.

“you’re in the early stages of shock, Hilda,” she said worriedly, “you should really go to bed, there’s no need for you to stay here.”

Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson shook their heads, Miss Wilson replied, “she must stay here, Barbara, it’s vital that everyone sees her still taking part - the blow to everyone’s morale otherwise would be too great!”

Barbara looked from one to the other and nodded slightly, “understood, but you should take it easy for the next few days!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “excellent, I needed an excuse - Nell was trying to get me to try abseiling tomorrow!”

The young matron smiled and left, Miss Wilson brought the coffees across and sat opposite her friend, she handed one of the drinks across.

“Are you going to tell me?” she said softly,

Miss Annersley looked up, “you know, last time? In my Study, the day everyone had been converted back? We both felt that she was losing her powers, that the pain was far more bearable. Well she has obtained far more strength from somewhere. I have never felt pain like it, Nell, not even when I was off with my head injury. I wanted to crawl under some rock and hide. I’m only pleased that she was distracted so quickly - a long time of that agony - it’s unthinkable.”

The two Heads sat, slowly drinking their coffees while Miss Annersley recovered. After a time they could hear the fireworks start up again and Miss Wilson looked across at her companion, “well you’re looking a little better,” she said gruffly, “feel up to returning?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “yes I think so,” she stopped as her friend presented her with a handkerchief,

“Better get rid of the blood and tears on your face first!” Miss Wilson smiled. Miss Annersley looked around her for some form of reflecting material she could use as a mirror, “Oh give it back,” Nell held out her hand for the hanky, “I’ll do it!”

The Board’s quiet tonight - where is everyone?

A lot of them are now in Australia - they’ll be on later!

Catherine_B
Have any of you been keeping an eye on those weird weather reports? The ones over in Interlaken, Austria and the UK?

Rachael P
I’ve read something about them, why?

Catherine_B
It’s just something that struck me about the locations that’s all. All the places where these storms have been happening are in areas where the Chalet School was located - even Guernsey!

Ray
I read that the storms have all gone now - except the ones in Interlaken itself - they seem to be getting worse!

Rachael P
Has anyone emailed the Abbess or Bill - perhaps they could tell us what sort of weather they are having.

edith
They’re away on camp at the moment - will be back at the end of the week - perhaps you should contact them when they return.

*Back on topic! Next! And I'm going to bed - don't care if we're on British Summer Time or Greenwich Mean Time - I'm tired!*

The Heads returned to watch the rest of the firework display, Miss Annersley, her arm through Miss Wilson’s was grateful for her friend’s strength for the rest of the evening. Once the display was finished they walked to the front to address everyone.

“Our thanks to all the girls of St Mildred’s for a magnificent display,” Miss Annersley began, then waited until the clapping and cheers had died down. "Just to let everyone know that we have another three days of camp, I intend to enjoy them, I hope all of you will too. Now, as it’s very late - I suggest we all retire for the night! Goodnight all!”

The following morning Miss Annersley was feeling well once more and joined Miss Wilson on their early walk. They walked over nearer to the edge of the Platz to look out at the view. It was now impossible to see any of the surrounding mountains and, even more worryingly, there was nothing there instead of the mountains - the view just appeared to stop about a mile out from the Gornetz Platz.

Miss Annersley, after staring out at the sight for some time, spoke, “in a way I’ll be glad to get back to the School, Nell, at least then we can contact the CBB and Madge, find out if anything more has been discovered about this phenomenon.”

“Agreed, Hilda,” replied Miss Wilson, “especially as we don’t even know whether or not it’s dangerous!”

The next three days passed quickly, EBD had not been seen since the night of the firework display and almost everyone was secretly hoping that she had finally given up. The two Heads were under no illusions and felt that Elinor had only gone to recoup.

The final day was a frantic day of packing and transporting of equipment and belongings back to the School. The kitchen staff, under Karen departed first, leaving early morning, as soon as Fruhstuck had been prepared. The rest of the girls and Staff would be moving throughout the day. Before Fruhstuck was complete however, one of the younger kitchen staff suddenly appeared again, panting and out of breath, asking to speak to the Heads; Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson rose from the table and met with her in a nearby empty tent.

The maid’s excitement had caused her to descend into a German patois and it was a few minutes before either of the Heads could calm her sufficiently to understand her message, eventually she took a deep breath and said, “St Mildred’s, it is not there!”

“What do you mean, it’s not there?” the Head of St Mildred’s was rather sharp and the young maid gulped slightly before replying, “Fraulein Wilson, Karen sent me to say that the entire building St Mildred’s has disappeared, as though it never existed!”

Miss Annersley placed a calming hand on her friend’s shoulder, “what of the School itself, Lili?” she asked softly,

“The School is there, Fraulein Annersley, just not St Mildred’s,” the girl was very earnest.

“Very well, thank you Lili, go get yourself a drink, I expect you are thirsty after your run here!” The girl disappeared gratefully.

Miss Wilson turned to her friend, “that’s where she’s got her extra power from! Elinor has stopped using part of her creativity to keep the buildings going and diverted it into causing pain!” She looked down, “And I am suddenly just Science Mistress again!” the last sentence said ruefully.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Nell,” Miss Annersley’s reply was swift, “you are still my deputy - if you like I’ll make it official - you are now Deputy Head - satisfied?”

Miss Wilson smiled, “well I did plan to have a few minutes wallowing in self pity,” she paused, “but you’ve just talked me out of it!”

*Nag! Nag! Nag!  ;D Next installment!*

Both women laughed softly, looking outside Miss Annersley caught the attention of one of the Sixth Formers passing by, “would you please ask Miss Derwent and Matron Herschell to join us,” she asked softly.

A few minutes later both members of Staff had joined the Head, Miss Annersley quickly filled them in on the latest developments,

“Well it’s not a problem as far as the girls are concerned, there are plenty of spare dormitories at present. How many girls from St Mildred’s are there?”

“Sixty-three,” Miss Wilson replied,

“Easy then,” Barbara turned to the Head, “I’ll grab the other matrons and disappear back to the School now if I may, Miss Annersley, that way we can have everything arranged for the girls when they get back.”

Miss Annersley nodded her assent and the matron left. Ruth Derwent turned to the Head, “we may have a problem with Staff quarters Hilda. We have five spare, from the four who escaped and Matron Lloyd’s room. How many St Mildred’s staff are there Nell?”

“Including myself, six Staff,” Miss Wilson looked slightly worried, “perhaps it may be suitable to use one of the dormitories or something similar?”

“An easier solution would be if you came into the Head’s Suite with me, Nell, I have that spare room after all!” Miss Annersley interrupted, “Ruth, could you please let all the Staff know? I’ll announce things to the girls once we’ve finished packing,”

Miss Derwent nodded and turned to leave.

The Head’s announcement was received extremely calmly in general, although a few of the St Mildred’s girls were rather upset at losing all of their possessions, they quickly cheered up when told that everyone would be in the same situation once they had escaped!

On their return, the School quickly settled in with the new arrangements. Over the next few days Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson contacted the CBB and discovered the strange weather that had been occurring in the Real World, and in particular around Interlaken. At the same time they watched as the apparent view seemed to reduce everyday. It now seemed that the view stopped less than 200 yards from the edge of the Platz, and was reducing still further each day.

One morning, perhaps a week after their return from camp, Alison joined them during their walk,

“Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, I think we have a problem.” she said quickly, “as you know we have been leaving food and supplies out for Carol and Jane.”

Both woman nodded,

“The last two nights it hasn’t been collected.” Alison returned, “we didn’t think anything of it on the first night - but two nights running? If it were the other way around that would be the signal that there was something seriously wrong. And I think they could be in trouble!”

“But you don’t know where they are, Alison, how on earth are we going to be able to find them?” Miss Annersley also sounded very worried,

Miss Wilson looked across at her friend, “we’ll have to organise search parties - include the entire School,”

The Head nodded, “agreed, and we’ll also have to arrange another pair to act as our safety net…”

“Already thought of that, Miss Annersley, two of the prefects have gone to hide out in case EBD wants to demote the pair of you once more!” The Head Girl’s eyes were dancing as she said this.

“Excellent, well as soon as Fruhstuck is over we will arrange the search,” Alison smiled gratefully and sped back to the School.

“Hilda this could be very bad, if Matron Lloyd has got hold of that gun…”

“I know Nell, those two girls may be in serious trouble.”

*Sorry Lisa - not a funny one!
Sorry Esmeralda - way too late - hope you see it when you get back from work!
Next!*

On the way back to the school the Deputy Head turned to her friend, “Hilda, it never occurred to me before but, could the house Matron was being held in have disappeared at the same time as St Mildred’s? After all, like everything it is Elinor’s creation.”

“I don’t think so Nell, if it had we would have heard something long before this - St Mildred’s must have disappeared the night of the firework display at the latest - and that was ten days ago!”

“Yes, of course - Freudesheim is still there as well, perhaps Elinor is saving those until she thinks she needs even more power!”

The Head shivered slightly, “don’t even joke about that Nell!”

The entire School were divided into search parties and the Gornetz Platz mapped out into sections for searching by the Geography team. Each search party had equipment to break into houses if necessary and a small battery powered radio to enable contact between the parties. They were also instructed to call in with the centre every 10 minutes - Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, along with a number of the Prefects and the matrons, would be awaiting the calls as the designated Centre. A large map of the Platz with the sections was with them and the sections searched would be marked off immediately.

Before the search began Miss Annersley addressed everyone, “Remember everyone, our priority here is to find Carol and Jane, and to provide medical care if necessary. It is possible that the reason for their lack of contact is due to Matron Lloyd escaping, and if that is the case she may be armed. You should on no account attempt to approach her, if she is seen contact the Centre for advice.”

The search began, the search parties fanned out across the Platz, concentrating on all the houses, chalets and hotels left empty ever since the San had been written out of the story. By late morning fully one third of the Platz had been searched without effect and both the Head and Deputy Head were started to look worried. A call from the search party led by Miss Dene suddenly announced that they had found the house and the Centre party moved there. Jane Carmichael had been discovered, locked up in a room at the top of the house, although hungry and with a slight bump on her head she was otherwise uninjured. She spoke to Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson,

“I’m so sorry, Miss Annersley,” she began, “Matron had been no trouble for so long, I suppose we allowed ourselves to relax,”

“What happened Jane?” Miss Annersley allowed none of her worry to infect her voice,

“Two days ago, I went in to her room - taking in her breakfast, she was in the shower - or at least that’s what I thought - I could hear the shower running. But she was really just behind the door, she had wrenched off the leg of her chair,” Jane indicated the chair in the room with only three legs, “anyway, next thing I know she hits me on the head - I was knocked out. I was only out a few minutes and found she had locked me in the bathroom, I could hear what happened next. When I didn’t appear Carol came up to find me. I heard her being overpowered by Matron and then they both left. I managed to break the lock on the bathroom door, but she had also locked the main door and that was too strong.”

“Very well, Jane, now don’t worry, we’ll find them, go with matron Rider - she’ll fix your head,” Miss Annersley turned to her friend, “we keep looking, but this time for Matron Lloyd and a hostage!”

The search continued with all search parties told of the change of emphasis, at the lunch time Karen sent out kitchen maids with sandwiches and flasks of coffee for everyone, Miss Wilson had to cajole her friend to eat as Miss Annersley was extremely worried about Carol’s safety.

“Would she have returned to Elinor do you think, Nell?” Miss Annersley asked as they moved from one search area to another,

“I don’t think so, Hilda,” Miss Wilson had been considering the same thing, “she’s had ample time to realise that Elinor didn’t care about her situation. I think what she’s more likely to have done is tried to get off the Platz and has taken Carol along in case she meets any of us.”

“But she cannot get off the Platz, Elinor has isolated us,” Miss Annersley returned.

“I know, and when she discovers that it’s going to be a big shock, I sincerely hope that Carol doesn‘t antagonise her.”

“Your talking about someone who was one of the liveliest Middles, and Seniors in the School, Nell,” the soft reply was given with a sense of foreboding.

The search continued, the areas being searched now - over the other side of the Platz - were unfamiliar to Miss Annersley or Miss Wilson, although they noticed that here the phenomenon seemed even more advanced with the observable view only feet from the edge of the Platz. Suddenly there was a shout from a search party nearby and a message over the radio announced that they had found Matron Lloyd!

The Matron had been run to ground very close to the edge of the Platz, well aware that she was being watched by the search parties she made no attempt to hide her presence or to escape. She just waited. In her hand she held the revolver and had already fired upon one or two people who had moved too close. Everyone was now safe behind rocks or trees, awaiting the members of the Centre. When she had spoken it was to utter just one demand, that she speak to the Head.

On arriving in the copse of trees just behind where the Matron stood, the Head listened as members of the original search party informed her of Matron’s demands.

“If she wants to talk to me, I may persuade her to say where Carol is, Nell,” she said preparing to step out onto the clearing.

Miss Wilson shook her head and stepped in front of her friend, “No Hilda, I can’t allow you to go out there,” she placed her hands on her friend’s shoulders, stopping her dead.

“Nell, let me go,” Miss Annersley ordered, “If Gwynneth can tell me where Carol is, it’s worth the risk!”

The Deputy Head looked at her friend in exasperation, “Hilda, that woman is unstable, she definitely has a grudge against you, and you’re proposing to step out there to allow her a clear shot. I will not allow it!”

“You do not have a choice, Miss Wilson,” the Head’s voice had turned icy once more, “You are my deputy, you will take over if I fall, now release me!”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “Not this time, Hilda, we all need you, I’ll go out there instead of you. She may be less likely to shoot me.”

“No…” Miss Annersley began.

Miss Wilson looked over at the Prefects standing watching this discussion, open-mouthed. “Alison, Helen, I need you to do something for me,” she said softly, “it will probably be the hardest thing you’ve ever done in your life, but I think it’s necessary - you see I believe the School needs its Headmistress.”

Alison and Helen exchanged glances, “I think I know what you’re going to ask Miss Wilson,” Alison replied softly, “and I think we both agree with you,” Helen nodded her agreement to the words.

“Then please hold the Headmistress here until either I return or the Matron has disappeared!”

At her words the two Prefects stepped forwards and grabbed hold of Miss Annersley’s arms, both of them had gone pale but were determined. Miss Annersley looked around at both girls, neither could meet her gaze, but they did not release their grip.

Miss Wilson took a step back, “see you soon, Hilda,” she smiled and walked out onto the clearing.

Miss Annersley stood between the two Prefects, she did not struggle, only looked at both of them, Helen was taller than the Head and muscular, Alison, although shorter at 5‘6 was very strong, “release me girls,” Miss Annersley ordered, her voice was icy and both girls shivered,

“No Miss Annersley,” the Head Girl’s voice was very quiet, “Miss Wilson is right, we need you!” Helen said nothing, only shook her head.

Miss Wilson meanwhile had stepped out onto the clearing to confront the Matron.

“Gwynneth?” she called, “I think we need to talk,”

The Matron looked around, “I wanted to speak to Hilda,” she said,

“The Head’s indisposed at the moment, Gwynneth, I’m Deputy, talk to me!”

The Matron thought for a moment then shrugged, “why not? This is not a good situation Nell, don’t think I’m not aware that your people have me surrounded. In fact the only reason I’m not currently on my way back to one of those rooms is because of this!” she indicated the gun held in her hand.

“My only reason for being here Gwynneth is to find out what happened to Carol,” Miss Wilson’s voice was soft, reasonable.

“Carol, oh you mean one of my captors,” Matron Lloyd smiled, “she was always the one I thought would use this on me - very loyal that girl!”

“Where is she, Gwynneth?”

“I shot her, Nell” Matron laughed at the pain in Nell’s eyes, “she was becoming a nuisance so I shot her!”

“Is she still alive?” Miss Wilson forced herself to ask the question.

“No idea, Nell, but I doubt you’ll find her in time - the wound looked pretty severe,” Matron’s voice displayed no emotion as she said these words.

“Tell me where she is!” Miss Wilson’s voice was sharp.

Matron looked across at the phenomenon, it had just encroached onto the land, “I don’t think so, Nell, I’ll be leaving now - have you noticed that thing? Any items thrown into it disappear - I’ve no idea where, so I think I’ll find out,” she turned away then seemed to think of something and turned back, “Oh, and as a final gift for Hilda, take this.”

As she spoke she raised the gun and fired, Miss Wilson was hit and dropped to the ground, a crimson stain encroaching down the left side of her body.

Matron Lloyd laughed and then turned and ran toward the phenomenon, she leapt into it and disappeared.

*Oh alright then - only a little one as I really do need to write that report!*

The sound of the gunshot reverberated round the copse of trees where the Prefects held the Headmistress; Miss Annersley flinched noticeably at the sound. She spoke again, but this time her voice was low and quiet, “please, Alison, Helen, let me go, you have my word I’ll not go out there unless it’s safe,”

The two girls looked at each other and nodded, they released the Head’s arms, “come with me,” she ordered.

In the clearing ahead, Miss Annersley saw Nell Wilson lying on the ground, she could see the blood stain, as she watched Barbara Herschell appeared carrying a first aid kit. The young matron turned to the numerous on-lookers, “it’s alright everyone, she’s not badly hurt, it’s a flesh wound,”

There was an audible sigh of relief from everyone around the ground, Miss Annersley walked out to stand next to her friend, Barbara Herschell looked up, “Oh Miss Annersley, it’s OK, Miss Wilson has a wound in her left shoulder, from what I can tell the bullet just bounced off of the shoulder blade. She’ll need it to be dressed for a while, and to wear a sling, but nothing more!”

Miss Annersley nodded and knelt on her friend’s right, Miss Wilson looked up and grinned, “Well I suppose you’re going to say it ‘serves me right’, Hilda? But I saw what she was planning and was already falling to the ground when she fired, had it been you I think she would have killed you!”

“Perhaps Nell,” Miss Annersley’s voice was soft, she leant close to her friend to whisper in her ear, “Nell Wilson if you ever do that to me again, I will demote you to the Staff Baby and inform the rest of the Staff that they may return to their original way of treating her!”

Miss Wilson looked shocked, “Hilda you wouldn’t!”

“Try me, Miss Wilson!”

Wow, I can't wait for the next part of this story, I've been thoroughly enjoying it - ok, so this whole section is great when procrastinating over term papers  ::)
I was just rereading the whole thing, and I think my favourite part is that of Hilda as the Staff Baby, what's a little scary though is that's me at work! I'm the Office Baby, and I wind up doing all the little things that no one else wants to do, all the repetative stuff, yet I'm also supposed to do an other 'projects' they throw at me - argh (although no one would dream of asking me to make coffee - it would be an unmitigated disaster), Hilda was a saint to take it so well, but what I wonder is if this is the norm, or was it then?

Anyways, waiting impatiently for more, although I won't start pleading.

Title: The Head stoodRe:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)
Post by Lesley on Oct 27th, 2003, 7:52pm
*Next installment!*

The Head stood up and turned to face Alison and Helen; the Prefects could not meet her gaze but instead looked down at the ground,

“This is the second time that the Prefects have been responsible for restraining me,” Miss Annersley’s voice was quiet and carried only to the two girls, “the first time there was justification, on this occasion you disobeyed my direct orders, there will not be a third time. Alison, Helen, I appreciate you had good intentions but you will never attempt that again, had Miss Wilson died…”

The Head broke off and took a breath, “now, we need to keep searching,” she conferred with her colleague for a few minutes, retrieving all the information relating to the conversation between Matron Lloyd and the Deputy Head. Miss Wilson was then taken, protesting, back to the School.

A swift meeting was held with the leaders of those search parties available, the rest being informed via radio. The onus of the search had changed – they were now looking for Carol Leigh – certainly injured, possibly seriously. Everyone was aware that time was against them, especially as the evening started to draw in around 2000hrs. Eventually Miss Derwent spoke to the Head,

“Hilda, we’re going to have to call off the search for tonight, everyone is getting tired and hungry and it’s too dark to see properly. We can resume first thing in the morning.”

The Head nodded quickly and the search parties were called in, the Geography team being careful to mark off those sections that had been searched on their map.

That night, perhaps two in the morning, Miss Wilson awoke needing a drink. She had insisted that she did not need to be in the San, but instead could return to her room in the Head’s suite. Her shoulder was bandaged and she wore her left arm in a sling, but was fairly mobile. She went into the small bathroom to get a drink, on her return she noted that the Miss Annersley was not in her room and went in search of her friend.

The Study door opened and Nell Wilson stood at the entrance, she looked in; Miss Annersley was sat on the window seat staring out into the night. She turned round, “sorry, Nell, did I disturb you earlier?” she asked softly.

“No, I was thirsty, when I got up for a drink I noticed you weren’t in your room,” Miss Wilson came and sat beside her friend on the window seat, “Hilda, what are you doing here? Do you know what time it is?”

“I can’t sleep, Nell, every time I try I see Carol Leigh’s face.” The Head took a breath then continued, “she’s out there somewhere, injured, in pain, and it’s my fault. If she dies, I’m responsible.”

“Hilda, you didn’t shoot her, that was Gwynneth, and if I ever meet up with Matron Lloyd again I promise I’ll take a pound of flesh – with blood – from close to her heart!”

Miss Annersley smiled at the literary reference from her scientist friend. “You’d better wait until you have two good arms again then!” she observed quietly.

Her face became sober once more, “Nell, I do have the responsibility, I’m the one who started all of this – on hearing about your plans with Madge. I could have remained silent. Now because of my dreams of living a ‘normal life’ without being dictated to by an author, one of my charges could be dead. That girl is only 17 years old, Nell, what on Earth was I thinking, allowing her to become a jailer for someone I had personal knowledge was evil, vindictive and violent? I stand in loco parentis for all these girls, it’s hardly the action of a true parent to place them in danger is it?”

Title: Re:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)
Post by Lesley on Oct 27th, 2003, 7:53pm
*Too long!*

“They are all aware of the danger they face, you know, do you think Carol didn’t know exactly what she was risking? Those girls are willing to do anything for you, Hilda, even brave your wrath by defying you, like Alison and Helen today! And those are not just your dreams, Hilda, everyone in the building has the same dreams, and that girl out there has them too.”

The Deputy Head paused for a moment, thinking, “Hilda, of everyone you have been the one the School looks to, Staff included, myself included. When you reminded me of my responsibilities a few weeks back, it was a wake-up for me.”

“It nearly got you killed a few days later!”

Miss Wilson smiled, “even if I had died then, Hilda, I would have had no regrets, at least it would have meant you would have survived to continue the fight. That’s why I insisted on going out there today, even though it was against your orders!” She looked across at her friend before continuing, “and why I’d do it again even if you did make me Staff Baby!”

Miss Wilson placed her arm around her friend, Miss Annersley rested her head on Nell Wilson’s shoulder “you’re just tired, Hilda, we’ll find her in the morning.” After a few minutes Nell Wilson looked down, Hilda Annersley was asleep, Miss Wilson sighed and then, careful not to wake her friend, she slowly wriggled into a more comfortable position. Resting her head back on the cushions at the rear of the window seat she closed her eyes, she was asleep in seconds…

Miss Wilson awoke just as the clock on the mantel was striking 6am; she looked around her in some confusion, recognising that she was in the Head’s Study and immediately remembering the events of the night before. She slowly sat up, wincing with the pain from her shoulder, “Hilda, Hilda, you’ve got to wake up!” she shook her friend while speaking, Hilda Annersley awoke suddenly and sat bolt upright.

“Have I been asleep?” she asked,

“For the last four hours or so,” her friend replied, “you’d better go get ready for the day, the rising bell will be going soon – you said an early start for everyone!”

“What about you?”

“I’ll be along soon – I have this wonderful excuse for being late, you see,” she indicated her shoulder,

Miss Annersley smiled and headed toward the door, as she reached it she turned, “does it hurt, Nell?” there was a mischievous look in her eyes.

“Yes, a little,” admitted the Deputy Head,

“Good, it serves you right!” the Head’s words floated back down the corridor.

*For anyone who may consider the next two posts are cruel and unusual punishment, I invite them to look at the drabble entitled 'The Chalet Horror Show or Lesley's Adventures!'*

One Melbourne Evening

“Come on in Esmeralda, the other two will be here soon,” Vikki opened the door wide,

“I know KB is coming, who else?”

“Lisa managed to get the evening off, Kathryn’s covering for her,”

At that moment there was a knock at the door and KB and Lisa appeared,

“Did you get it?” Vikki asked KB excitedly,

“Just arrived at the post office,” replied the Australian, “I’m really looking forward to trying some more of those Swiss chocolates, it’s just a pity it’s a smallish box - otherwise we could have asked more people,”

“Never mind that now, open it!” Lisa looked over at the parcel,

“Oh, by the way, everyone help themselves to drinks,” this from Vikki, “I’ve got more alcoholic stuff outside if you want it,”

“No thanks Vikki, both KB and I are on duty tomorrow morning - we’ll stick to Coke!”

All four women helped themselves to chocolates from the box and sat there in silence enjoying the rich taste.

“I think that’s the best I’ve ever tasted,” Esmeralda said slowly, “how do the Swiss do that?”

“No idea,” this from KB, “These chocolates are divine!”

The box was swiftly devoured, all four women looked around with wide grins of appreciation, “I don’t know about the rest of you but I could really do with something to eat!” this from Lisa, “Is there a takeaway round here?”

“There’s a curry house or Pizza Hut, what do you want?”

Esmeralda giggled slightly, “How about curry and pizza together?” she asked, this idea was greeted with enthusiasm by all four and Vikki and KB disappeared out to buy the food.

After eating all four decided that they needed some exercise, “I know,” giggled KB, “I’ll show you where I used to go skinny dipping as a kid, It’s not far from here!”

Somehow everything they did was a huge joke that evening, even the fact that Vikki had managed to put shoes from two different pairs on her feet was greeted with a giggle and a shrug. When Lisa fell down the stairs the others were laughing so much they couldn’t help her up for five minutes. Then when they all tried to get into KB’s car they discovered she’d left the keys back in Vikki’s place.

“Oh never mind,” she said, “It’s not far, we can walk, come on!”

As they went along Vikki was singing
“oh, the wonderful thing about yibbling,
Yes yibbling’s a wonderful thing,
Their tops are made out of rubber,
Their bottoms are made out of spring,
Their bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, fun ,fun, fun, fun, fun,
But the most wonderful thing about yibbling is…

All four joined in for the last, “I’M THE ONLY ONE!”

They arrived at a wire fence, “Shhhh, shhhh, shhh,” yelled KB, “we have to climb this, but quietly,”

Amid shrieks of laughter the four women finally managed to climb the fence, a passing police patrol car saw them and stopped. The four women had managed to reach the pool and were halfway through undressing when the policeman appeared.

“Now ladies what’s going on here?”

“My good man,” Esmeralda was at her haughtiest, “we are planning to go for a swim, we are away from all housing, we are not causing an obstruction and we are not breaking any laws!”

“Are you from England ma’am?”

“Of course I’m from England, my good man, how did you guess?”

“Something told me so, are you all from England?”

“Not me,” Lisa put in, “I’m Irish,”

“I’m local occifer,” this from KB, “I was just showing these people where I used to go skinny dipping as a kid and we thought it would be a good idea now!” she smiled at him,

“I say you’re not causing trouble are you mate?” Vikki, suddenly belligerent, came stalking up, “I’ll have you know I can easily deal with blokes like you!” She took a determined stance, spun round, and kicked herself on the left ear. The policeman was intrigued - he didn’t think that was possible!

He tried again, “ladies, I really don’t think you’ve realised where you are standing, this is not a good place to go for a swim,”

“Are we going to take that, girls?” this from Esmeralda, they were all in a state of near undress, they linked arms and then, “one, two, three jump!”

All four women jumped into the pool, a second officer came running up beside the first, “Oh my god, they didn’t did they?”

The first officer nodded, “afraid so, you fish them out, I’m going to call the office - we’ll need our oldest paddy wagon,”

“Why can’t you fish them out?”

“Cos I’ve got the stripes son!”

Sometime later there was a knock at the door of the house belonging the Jem and Madge Russell, they both went to answer it,

“Well how on Earth should I know who it is Jem? Eleven in the evening is hardly time to go calling!”

“I just thought it was probably one of the nutcases from your school that’s all,” Jem opened the door as he said this. Outside stood a police sergeant, parked in the road was an extremely old paddy wagon.

“Pardon me sir, ma’am, could I ask if you are Mr Jem Russell, owner of the Golf and Fitness Store, and Mrs Madge Russell owner of the Real Chalet School?”

Jem nodded, “yes officer, is there a problem?”

“Well sir, we thought we should return these four to you - apparently two are employees of yours Sir, while the other two are School mistresses a your school Ma’am.” He retrieved a bundle from the front of the van, grimacing as he did, when he returned to them the Russells noticed his eyes were watering.

“These are their clothes ma’am, likely they’ll want to clean up a bit before putting them on, his companion was opening up the back of the wagon as he said this and the Russells were suddenly aware of an overpowering stench as four figures, wrapped in blankets, stepped out.

“Good God,” Jem Russell clasped his handkerchief to his nose and mouth, they smell like they’ve been swimming in a cess pit!”

“Ah yes sir!” the sergeant agreed, “that’s exactly what they’ve been doing! Confidentially sir, ma’am, I think they’ve been taking something illegal, I’ll let them off with a warning this time - chiefly because I don’t want them anywhere near my station - but you might like to find out exactly what they’ve been taking!”

Madge and Jem Russell looked at the forlorn figures on their lawn, “they are not coming into the house, Jem,” Madge managed to gasp through her hands, “take them round the back, we’ll try and see what the garden hose will do!”

The following morning at breakfast saw an extremely subdued Lisa and Kb at the Real Chalet School, in fact Lisa disappeared halfway through breakfast looking very ill.

“What happened to you two last night?” Kathryn whispered across the table, “you both look like death warmed up!”

“I don’t want to talk about it!” KB was very reticent.

Jennie stopped by to talk to KB, “Madge told me what happened KB, you’re going to need some jabs - Hepatitis A, possibly B, typhoid, polio and tetanus - let Lisa know will you?”

“Oh I nearly forgot, KB,” this from Carolyn, “there was a message for you from one of the English CBBer’s, said to tell you not to eat those chocolates as Customs had discovered some of them were laced with marijuana, advised that you get yours checked.”

KB nodded glumly, “who was the message from?” she asked.

“Lesley.”

Lesley, if you make me have all those jabs, that would be the cruellest punishment you could cook up! I have a positive phobia of needles and will go to extreme lengths to avoid them.
H'mm. I think I've said that on this board before..oh er.

That was very funny- but you forgot Catherine_B. *She* was responsible for a lot of it too!

Now- more Hilda and Nell?

BTW- do we need to join that msn groups thing to get access to the word doc of Real Cs?

I think I'm glad that I didn't stay on any later last night as I wouldn't have been able to resist joining in.

That was a wonderful revenge Lesley. Laughed till I almost fell out of bed.

BTW KB how do you know you are allergic to mj? (Just curious ;) )

WELL!

Actually Lesley, I'd like to thank you for the chocolates - very enjoyable ;D

And I enjoyed the Pizza/Curry too, and being so out of it I could cope with the swim in the cess pit, although I'll pass on the jabs and take my chances thank you.

But  --  Haughty?  Me?  I don't do haughtiness. :o

*Sulks at being described as haughty and points out once again that she didn't actually do any torturing as her computer couldn't keep up with the speed of the other posters. ;D

ps Please may we have more of the real Real CS soon?

When I was in Berlin last time, the people in the room beside me used to smoke it every afternoon and when they did, my throat used to seize up. Not a fun experience, although I think I got desensitised to it after a while.

Oh, and I forgot to add, Lesley, that I've already had jabs for all five of those as a result of going to Russia in 2001.  ;)

Lesley, Liss has said to archive at 7 pages, so sometime within your next few posts I presume. Let us know what point would be a good place to do it.

Well done Lesley!!!!!! ;D ;D
I suppose we rather deserved that! ::)
Anyway, now that you're revenged, can we have the next bit of story please!
(and I would still like to have been around to see your face when you read our little effort this morning!!!)

Carolyn - could you please leave post 104 onwards - archive the rest before that - that'll give everyone an idea on what's going on in Real CS!

Esmeralda - I notice the only reason you didn't join in was because of the speed (or lack of) of computer!

Everyone - I will be away tonight - RL and work rearing its head - have to stay away - so no Real CS until tomorrow night at earliest! Interestingly the last time I had to go away was on September 10th when I travelled to Newcastle - just before I left i started a little 300 word post for fun comparing Miss A's eyes and her drinks cabinet! - 68000 words and counting!

Vikki - I do hope you are right about the royalties issue.

Title: Re:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)

Rachel! It's great to see you! And if I send you a cheque then I have to send one to a number of other people on this list, and I just don't think I'm going to get enough to cover it. Besides, you (or your namesake) hasn't been humiliated!

Title: Re:  The Real Chalet School (mark 4)
Post by Rachel on Today at 10:28pm
KB, in recognition of the lack of humiliation I undergo in Peace (although for sheer misery.....!!!) I will forego the cheque in favour of a bed waiting for me if and when I ever get round to sorting out Con, which is probably going to be retitled "A Change for the Maynards" or "Trouble for the Maynards".

Personally I prefer the "Change" title, but what does anyone else think?

Rachel ~ with apologies to Lesley for hijacking her thread in order to poll the board, some of whom probably haven't even SEEN Con now!

*thanks Rachel for her generosity and apologies for the unhappiness of her character*

I like Changes, too, but is it a bit too similar to "Changes for the CS"? Or was that your intention?
