Title: Grizel in New Zealand
Post by ravenseyes on Nov 6th, 2003, 10:19pm
Grizel Cochrane stood at the bow of the liner that had brought her from Southampton to Auckland, and gazed across the wonderfully blue water at the city that she hoped she would call home.

?That?s Waiheke Island and that is Rangitoto Island? said Lisa Fletcher who was standing next to Grizel at the rail.  An Aucklander, she had regaled Grizel with descriptions of life in and around Auckland, and for Grizel arriving on a beautiful sunny November morning the world looked promising.  Although it was only spring in New Zealand, it was one of those calm, sunny mornings with everything looking crisp and blooming.

The seven week voyage had done much for her, the care lines and habitual look of discontent had faded and she was lightly tanned.  She had done little but rest and read on the voyage and as a result she looked younger than the woman who had boarded the boat on a raining September day in Southampton.

She cast her mind back to those final interviews with Miss Annersley and the mixture of shame, sadness and then amazement as she realized that she was being offered a chance to make her dream come true.

?Penny for them? Lisa?s voice broke into her musings.  Grizel looked up and smiled ?I?m just thinking of what a difference this is and how lucky I feel to get this opportunity?  ?Well another name for this country is Godsone? said Lisa in her crisp twang.  Besides, you?ll find that down under in New Zealand and Australia it doesn?t matter who you are, it?s what you are that counts.

As the ship pulled closer to the wharf Grizel could see over to the North Shore and then look back towards the town.  The little ferries chugged their way across the harbour to the various stops.  With a loud whoop of its siren and a grinding of fenders the ship docked and Grizel felt herself shiver with anticipation.  I?m here she thought.  Her eyes cast around the waiting crowd in search of Deira but in the great mass she couldn?t see her.

Grizel went back to her cabin to gather up her bag and cast her eyes around to check that she hadn?t left anything laying around.  Satisfied she touched up her makeup in the mirror and settled her hat at a becoming angle.  Leaving the cabin she joined the crowd at the top of the gangway.  As the queue wend it?s way downwards towards customs and immigration she looked around the Auckland waterfront.  The waterfront was a hive of activity with freighters being loaded with the great refridgerated containers of meat and dairy products that New Zealand was famous for as well as the huge bales of wool.  Grizel remembered reading somewhere there was about twenty sheep to every person in New Zealand.  She knew that Mollie Maynard had married a sheep farmer and lived in the South Island on a sheep station that was about the size of an English county.

Reaching the immigration counter Grizel handed her documents to the man behind the counter.  Ah Miss Cochrane ? I have a message for you from Mrs Kavanagh.  Grizel felt blank for a moment then remembered that Deira?s married name was Kavanagh.  The official gave Grizel a note, stamped her passport and other documents handed them back with a smile and said Welcome to New Zealand.
Grizel smiled back, gathered her belongings and went towards the luggage area.

She found a corner out of the traffic flow and opened Deira?s note:

My dear Grizel

I?m so sorry mavoureen that I can not be here to greet you but Moira has had a bad night and I can not leave her.  Once you have gathered all your traps, get a taxi to my house in Epsom.  You know the address.

Yours

Deira

Grizel walked on to the luggage area which was full of people.  Passengers, porters and customs officials.  The rapid drawly speech of the New Zealanders was everywhere and to Grizel more accustomed to the slower English of both England and the Continent it was a little bewildering.  A strapping dark skinned porter came towards her.
Did you need help ma?am her asked.
Grizel noted that his name badge read Hemi.  Thank you Hemi, if you could help me with my trunks and get me a taxi ?
Certainly ma?am.

Within 15 minutes Grizel was ensconced in the back seat of a Holden, her trucks strapped to the carrier and heading up the main street of Auckland, Queen Street.  She gazed around her.  The taxi driver looked back at her and asked first visit to New Zealand?  Yes replied Grizel.   As they went up Queen Street the taxi driver pointed out the town hall and the big department stores ? Smith and Caugheys.  He told Grizel S & C was the equivalent of your Marks and Spencer.  They moved through the traffic towards Epsom and he pointed to a hill that rose upwards with a large pointed memorial on top and one lone tree.  That?s One Tree Hill he proclaimed, with the war memorial.

Grizel looked as they drove along the tree lined streets.  Daffodils, magnolias, jonquils, crocuses and freesias were some of the flowers she recognized.  All the houses seemed large and stood on their own sections.  The taxi turned into a small cul-de-sac and then went up a driveway, stopping in front of a two story golden brick house with big bay windows.  A huge magnolia was blooming in the front yard.

That?ll be one pound thanks luv said the driver.  Even as Grizel handed over the New Zealand one pound note, the front door was pulled open and Deira came running down the walk and pulled open the door.  Grizel, Grizel she cried.  Grizel scrambled out of the car and the two friends embraced with tears running down their cheeks.

The taxi driver stood awkwardly to one side then cleared his throat.  Scuse me ladies but what shall I do with the trunks.

Grizel and Deira broke apart and Deira said to the driver to bring the trunks inside.  The driver loaded the first trunk onto the dolly and brought it a wide hall that ran the length of the house.

Grizel gazed along the hallway with numerous varnished wooden doors opening off it.  Halfway along a wide staircase led up to the second floor.   The floor was a lovely golden stained wood, that almost glowed in the sunlight that was coming through the glass door at the end of the hall.  Noticing Grizels looks at the floor Deira said its Rimu ? a native New Zealand timber.  Isn?t it beautiful.  Its such a warm color and it goes so well in the house.

Just put them in the hallway said Deira to the taxi driver ? it will be easier to unpack them and put them in the garage from here.

At that statement Grizel looked at Deira confusion on her face.  Unpack them she said.  I thought I was staying with you for a few days while I found a place of my own.

Deira grinned at her shamelessly.  I didn t tell you everything.  One of the reasons that Allan and I bought this house is it has a granny flat.

Grizel looked puzzled at this unfamiliar expression.  Come and look urged Deira.  Walking down the hall to the back door, they went out and along the porch.  At the end of the porch was another single story wing.  Deira opened the door and Grizel found herself in a charming one bedroom flat with its own kitchenette, bathroom and living area.

A shadow crossed Deira?s face as she explained, Allan?s mother was getting on when Allan and I married.  We bought this house so that when she decided that the big house was too much for her she could  move in here and still be independent and come and go as she wanted but be a part of the family too.  See it has it?s own outside door onto the drive so you can be as private or as sociable as you like.  We can be business like and you can rent it off me but I would love you to use it.  I haven?t felt able to rent it to a stranger but for you it would be perfect.

Grizel felt almost overwhelmed, but she agreed with Deira.  With the separate access they would not be living in each others pockets, which instinctively she felt would be wrong, as they would be in the business together all day but would be close enough to travel to work together and share the shopping and things like that.

Come and have a coffee back in the kitchen said Deira.  Moira is still asleep.
How is Moria asked Grizel.  She had seem photos of Deiras little girl now aged 4 and a bit who had been born crippled as a result of the car crash that had killed her father and grand mother and injured her mother causing a premature delivery.

She has her good days and her bad days replied Deira.  The weather has been beautiful lately and she has seen all the other children out playing and she wants to join them which makes her frustrated and angry.  There?s nothing wrong with her mind only her body and she gets terribly angry and runs temperatures which make her feel worse.  She will be waking up soon so lets have a coffee and then you can come up and meet her.  She?s really excited about meeting Aunty Grizel.

I?m looking forward to meeting her as well said Grizel.  Im fairly accustomed to young children now after spending time with Joey.

That?s right replied Deira she has five doesn?t she.  Oh no my dear ? haven?t I kept you up to date.  Jo and Jack have six , the Trips and then Steve, Charles and Mike and I am 99 per cent certain that the next letter I get from her will confirm she is expecting again because when I saw her just before I left she was getting ready to go to Canada and she dropped some hints.  You know that Madame has six now too.

Deira shook her head.

I?m sure I told you in a letter ? anyway she had twin boys while they were in Canada, Kevin and Kester.  Mary Burnett has married a doctor and now lives in Aberdeen.  Do you remember Luigia di Ferrara.

Yes replied Deira.  She joined the Poor Clares after she left school.

During the war she was put in a concentration camp and disappeared.  Joey told me she heard from Bianca that they had received notification of her death officially from the records that were recovered from the Servigliano concentration camp.   Who else ? oh Robin Humphries is in Canada and is joining La Sagesse as a postulant at Easter next year.

Grizel and Deira continued to reiminise over coffee until a call of Mummy from upstairs got them to their feet.  They walked up the wide stairway to a pretty bedroom where a small figure awaited them.

A cry of Mummy greeted them as they entered the sunny bedroom.  Grizel found herself under scrutiny from a pair of dark eyes.  Youre Aunty Grizel the voice said with certainty.  And you are Moira returned Grizel as she walked towards the bed.  Although Grizel had seen photos of Moira they hadn?t shown her coloring or her delicacy.  Moira had Deiras dark flashing eyes, but there any resemblance stopped.  Her hair was light brown with gold highlights in the sunlight and her skin was white and in places almost transparent.  Her body hunched and twitched constantly as she lay in the bed.  Grizel could see the will power as Moira held out her hand to her and she gently took the twisted fingers in her own.  Hello Moira, I am very glad to meet you at last.    A beaming smile came onto Moiras face as Grizel asked if she could sit on the side of her bed.  Mummy told me you had a a  a lady nurse  at your school who said that sitting on beds was bad for them and you weren?t to do it but I want you to.   Grizel felt surprised at this sentence from a nearly 5 year old but then she remembered Mary-Lou Trelawney back at school who had been raised solely with adults and also spoke using both words and tones far beyond her actual age.

Grizel grinned and said that was Matron Lloyd and she still tells the girls that they are not to sit on the beds.  You have a lovely bedroom Moira.  The room was light and very sunny with a big window looking out over the front lawn to the street.  Moiras bed was close to the window so she could see out.  All the furniture in the room was the golden Rimu that Grizel had admired downstairs and Moiras bed was made of the same.  It was higher than a normal bed so as to ease the lifting of Moira out of it, with a small rail to prevent her falling out.  Over it hung a bar like contraption with handles.  The smaller room next to Moira?s bedroom had been made into a bathroom and Grizel could see many of the same kinds of handles and bathing chair that she had seen at the Sanatorium on Sonnalpe.   Sitting on some shelves close to the bed was the biggest collection of teddy bears Grizel had ever seen.  Big ones, small ones, all colors of the rainbow, Grizel lost count at fifty something as Moira started talking to her again.  Do you like my teddies Aunty Grizel ?  They are magnificent Grizel replied.  Do they all have names ?  Yes replied Moira.  Then a look of sadness crossed her face.  Do you know why I have so many teddies she whispered.  Grizel felt puzzled by this question but she decided to answer it honestly.  No I don?t Moira.  Because I?m a cripple the bitter whisper came back at her.  I can?t play like other children and because I drop things I can only have soft toys because I?ll break them.   I want a big dolly with blond hair like other girls but I can?t have one.  With that Moira burst into tears and Deira came forward and put her arms around her.  Come on mavoureen she whispered.  Crying isn?t going to help.  Later this afternoon if you are well we will take Aunty Grizel for a walk around the neighborhood and she might push your chair for you.

The sobs that were shaking the thin and twisted body lessened and she looked up at Grizel.  Will you Aunty Grizel ?  If you mother says it is alright then I will replied Grizel thinking to her self that it could not be any worse than trying to push the massive pram that Joey Maynard had had for pushing the triplets around in.   You try and have sleep now and we will go out later she smiled at Moira and got a smile back.

As they went downstairs she asked Deira about the doll.  A lot of the dolls here are still very firm and rigid plastic and if she drops it  they can break or sometimes they are so heavy that she can not hold them and she gets very frustrated.  The upshot of this conversation was that Grizel penned an urgent airmail  to Jo Maynard in Canada asking her to look in the Canadian shops for a doll that was lightweight, blond and fairly soft.  Two days before Christmas a parcel arrived airmail from Canada with a 12 inch doll that met all the requirements and Madge had made extra clothes for the doll that had easy fastenings so that Moira could dress her herself.

Later that afternoon, Grizel, Deira and Moira set of for a walk around the neighborhood.  Moira chattered gaily on pointing out the various flowers and trees and showing Grizel the little New Zealand fantail bird darting in and out of the trees and ferns.  Grizel enjoyed this walk, all the houses were quite big and set in their own sections but it was an older area so they felt firm and settled.  There were big Totara trees in many of the well tended gardens and at the end of one street was a small park with a playground.  While Deira held Moira on the end of the seesaw, Grizel pushed on the other end and for the first time Moira had a seesaw.  For Moira this new experience was an eye opener.  Deira explained rather sadly to Grizel that many of the other mothers in the area would not talk to her or Moira when they came to the playground because Moira was different.  Its not like their children can catch it she exclaimed rather acidly but they just pull into themselves or make excuses to leave so we rarely come here anymore.  Grizel didn?t know what to  so in this case she said nothing but she felt for Deira.  Going through another exit from the park, they found themselves on a main road.  Deira pointed out the trolly bus tracks and the bus stop where you catch the bus into town.  She also showed Grizel where the market, butchers and vege shop was and a bookstore.
Looking at these shops Grizel suddenly realized that she was going to be responsible for herself.  Turning to Deira she said rather dazedly I?m going to have to cook and shop for myself.  I?ve never done that before.  Deira looked at her puzzled what do you mean?
Think about it Deira, I?ve never had to do for myself entirely before.  I was at school, then I went on to Florence, then I came back and taught at the Annexe followed by the main school.  All my holidays were either with people or in hotels.  I?ve never looked after myself before.  I don?t even know how to use a washing machine.  Deira burst into laughter at the look of tragic horror on Grizels face.  Well you said you were looking forward to new experiences in New Zealand, your going to get them.

I can't help wondering how much is Moira and how much is Deira's attitude to the response of the other parents. I imagine her to be an over-sensitive person who would take everything personally, so she might see insults where none were intented, as she did with Grizel and the situation in "Head Girl".

But I do feel sorry for Moira, and also for Grizel, having to become self-sufficient for the first time! I can see a few cooking accidents coming soon!

SIX MONTHS LATER

Grizel Cochrane smiled to herself as she straightened the racks of sheet music in the store.  She was happier than she had ever thought of being and life in New Zealand was suiting her.
The store was proving to be successful and living in the granny flat at Deiras was also a joy.  The store was located in a small street of the lower end of the main street and was only a short distance from the waterfront.  Grizel often enjoyed taking her lunch and sitting watching the busy harbor.  She and Deira alternated days although Moira had been ill recently so Grizel had done more in the shop.  However it had had it upside as Deira had insisted on her eating with them when she got home and Grizel had discovered over the past six months that she was not talented in the kitchen although she was improving.  One of the first things Deira had given her was the icon of New Zealand kitchens the Edmonds Cook book and the section on simple meals for one was Grizels mainstay.  Some of her disasters had been memorable such as the scones that she must have over mixed as when they came out of the oven they had not risen at all and had the consistency of a small brick.  Not even the ducks at the pond in the park where they had taken Moira that weekend had been able to cope with them which had reduced Deira and Moira to gales of laughter.  Equally she had never quite worked out what went wrong with the roast, but it had been buried in the back garden although Grizel wryly commented to Deira perhaps she should have continued to cremate it as it was two thirds the way there already.  One thing she had got the knack of making though was cakes and every so often she would make a delicious chocolate or banana cake and share it with Deira and Moira.
She had also mastered the wringer washing machine and no longer worried that she was going to end up putting her arm through the wringer.  For Grizel these achievements meant a lot to her.

The door bell chimed as new customers entered and Grizel went over to greet them and answer their queries on the music requirements for Grade 3 of the Royal Schools of Music pianoforte examinations.  As the reputation of the store had grown among the music teachers in Auckland more of them were  sending their pupils to purchase the music direct from Deira and Grizel  rather than ordering it from London.  Through her English contacts Grizel had arranged for a regular supply of the examination music and theory requirements for many instruments, to come to the shop, as well as copies of the latest teaching books.  This to had proved popular and Grizel had made many contacts among the local music teachers which had led to her being invited to join them at some concerts.   She had taken Moira to an afternoon childrens concert and had found that Moira loved music.  Deira had a piano and Grizel had taken to playing for Moira especially when she was not well as it seemed to calm her.  Although Grizel had no desire to ever teach music again she still enjoyed listening and playing for pleasure and it seemed that now she was happier her music was happier too.

Grizel sat at a table overlooking the water in a small café in Devonport on Aucklands north shore.  She had caught the ferry over this morning and was waiting for Lisa Fletcher to arrive.  In a couple of minutes she saw Lisa wending her way through the crowds towards her table.  Phew sighed Lisa.  What a crowd.  Winter sale time always brings them out.  Still that?s what we are here for.  Lets have a coffee and then go shopping.  Thirty minutes later coffeed and ready to go Grizel and Lisa joined the crowds in the shops.    It was June and all the mid winter sales were on and Grizel was feeling confident enough to spend some money.  The store was going well and regular payments were being sent from her bank to Miss Annersley and in these Grizel took great pride.  She knew she wasn?t the best of correspondents and had only written to Miss Annersley and her former colleagues a few times but she hoped that these regular payments would also show Hilda that her faith in Grizel had been justified.

Back in England, Miss Annersley had seen these payments and she knew from the letter she had received plus the letters that other staff had received that Grizel was happy and making a success of her life in New Zealand.  Jo Maynard had told her in a letter about the doll and that had confirmed to Miss Annersley that she had been correct.  The old Grizel never would have thought to get a doll for Moira.

Grizel wanted to get herself a couple of outfits suitable for wearing to evening shows and receitals.  Fashion was more relaxed in New Zealand and she had noticed that while she had a couple of evening outfits she had brought from England they were overdressed in comparison to the outfits worn by New Zealanders.  She also wanted some winter clothing as Auckland was to her a great deal warmer than Wales.  Snow never falls in Auckland and the temperature to her was more autumn than winter.  Her heavy English winter coat was too heavy except on the most bitter days so she wanted to find a lighter weight one to wear.  She enjoyed Lisas company and she and Lisa had joined several more of Lisas friends for outings over the past few months.  They had caught the ferry one glorious summer Saturday to Waiheke Island and had explored its quaint village and walked the white sand beaches ending with a swim.  Grizel had taken many photos and Moira had enjoyed seeing them.  She had also purchased some postcards and sent them to friends in England and to Jo and Madame in Canada.  She knew from a letter she had received from Jo that they were staying on in Canada for at least another year.  During the time she had been in New Zealand she had received one letter from her stepmother.  Grizel had written to her to advise her of Grizels address in New Zealand and she had tried to make the letter friendly, telling her stepmother about Auckland and how well the store was doing.  The letter she had received in response had been curt, acknowledging her address and stating that as she had not followed her fathers instructions by teaching music she wished no correspondence on the matter.  The fact that Grizel could receive this letter without being overwhelmed by the old feelings of hatred and bitterness spoke volumes for the mental improvement she had made over the past months.  Not that she was a saint ? she had still felt bitter and angry when she got the letter ? but she had managed to put those feelings down and now even felt some pity for her stepmother.  She had told Lisa some of her story and one comment that Lisa had made had stuck home.  Lisa had said I feel sorry for your stepmother as well.  I think your father was a rotter not to tell her about you because imagine how she felt when she found out and he says one reason for getting married was because of you.    Lisa had been engaged for the past year to an accountant and they would be getting married in February the next year.  I would hate to think that Alexander was marrying me for any other reason other than he loved me and he chose me, and I chose him she added in parenthesis.  Any women wants to feel this and your stepmother married your father thinking that he loved her and he choose her, then he says its to give my daughter a home.  I?m not surprised she resented you because you were the cause of her dreams being shattered.  Of course she was wrong to take it out on you ? it wasn?t your fault you were just a kid but a lot was your fathers fault.

Deira and Grizel sat giggling in Deiras kitchen.  The latest letter from Jo Maynard was between them and they were looking at the photos of the new Maynard twins Felicity Josephine and Felix Nicholas.  Grizel commented I don?t mind Felicity but Felix  uggh she shuddered.  Still Jo always did like weird names.  Apparently when Sybil was born Dr Jem had a group of them up there at die Rosen and they had a names party and Jo wanted Mallvina.  I was always surprised the triplets ended up with the names they did.  Deira thought a moment and said that Felix was the first unusual name Jo had used.  Steve, Charles and Mike are fairly normal.  Then Len Con and Margot are named after people at school.    Mmmn I suppose so muttered Grizel but Felix.  Still Jo looks really well and so does Robin.  Toronto obviously suits them.  Deira grinned, you know it is hard to picture Robin as grown up.  I still remember her as this little girl who comforted me when I was crying after I had heaved that stone at you.  I never saw her after I had left so I still think of a seven or eight year old.  The thought she is old enough to become a nun makes me feel old and decrepit.  What are you doing tonight any major plans ?

Grizel glanced out the window.  It was pouring with rain and cold with the wind lashing at the tree tops, yet that morning and had been sunny and calm.  Nothing she said with a big grin.  I have the latest Agatha Christie, a fire and a box of chocolates and I am going to be absolutely decadent, retire to my abode and read and relax.  What about you ?

I?ve got some people coming over for supper and a chat and then we are going to listen to the Irish national concert on the radio.   I?ve even made a Porter cake for supper and Moira can come down and listen as well if she is awake.  She enjoys the music and hearing about Ireland.  I?ve told her a lot about it because she knows she is not likely to get there and Mams to frail now to make the voyage down to visit and Mam knows I can?t leave Moira and come to her.

Later that evening as Grizel was comfortably ensconced on her sofa she was disturbed by the ringing of the phone.  Answering it she was barraged by a frantic tearful voice.   Grizel Grizel its awful I don?t know what to do ? they haven?t come home and the weather is terrible.  It took Grizel a few moments to recognize the voice.  Mrs Fletcher ? whats wrong what do you mean.?

It took Grizel all her time to understand the sob muffled somewhat incoherent Mrs Fletcher.  Grizel knew that Alexander had been planning on flying up from Wellington to visit Lisa this weekend.  From what Mrs Fletcher was saying they had taken the small yacht that the Fletchers kept moored at the bottom of their section to go for a sail that morning when the weather had been so nice.  The bad weather had rolled in unexpectedly and the pair were not back and Mrs Fletcher was rapidly giving away to hysterics.  Grizel looked at the weather out the window and her heart dropped.  No one could be safe on the little yacht in this weather.  Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Fletcher  Grizel managed to break through the sobs.  Did they say where they were going.  Not really just around the harbor.  Grizel also knew that Mrs Fletcher was alone at the house.  Mr Fletcher was in Christchurch on business and there were no live in housekeepers or similar.  Mrs Fletcher I?m going to call the police and then I will get a taxi and come over.  Oh thank you Grizel ? I just didn?t know what to do.  Grizel knew that there was a coastguard but she wasn?t sure how to contact them whereas she was sure the police could help.  She hung up from Mrs Fletcher and then dialed 0.  It  seemed to Grizel that it took forever for the operator to connect her to the police but she knew she must stay calm.
She explained to the police officer who she was and why she was calling.  The officer promised her he would contact the coast guard and start patrols looking around the beaches but he didn?t sound very hopeful.  Grizel hung up the phone with shaking hands and it took two attempts to dial the taxi companys number.  The taxi will be there in 15 minutes ma?am. Grizel made sure the guard was in front of the fire and then mechanically walked to the coat stand to get her raincoat and hat. She left her flat and went along to the back door of Deiras house and into the kitchen.  She didn?t want to disturb Deira has she could hear the Irish radio show going and happy singing and chatting from the lounge at the front of the house but she needed to leave Deira a note to tell her what was happening.  Once she had done this she saw she had 2 minutes for the taxi so she slipped out and went and waited by the front gate.  The taxi drew up to the doors of the Fletchers large house.  Grizel paid the fare and got out and mentally braced herself.  The front doors were still unlocked and she went in and went to the lounge.  Mrs Fletcher was sitting on the sofa looking out over the dark harbor.  She had stopped crying although the twisted remains of the handkerchief between her hands bore testimony to what had gone before.  She looked up Grizel oh Grizel  Thank you for coming.  Grizel sat down beside Mrs Fletcher and took her hand.  I?ve called the police and they have called in the Coastguard.  All we can do is wait and pray now.  Do you want me to call Mr Fletcher at the hotel in Christchurch.   Oh yes please Grizel ? I don?t know how to tell William.  He dotes on Lisa.

Don?t give up hope yet Mrs Fletcher they may have taken shelter in one of the bays and just be anchored there.  Grizel prayed fervently that this was true.  Lisa was very important to Grizel and in some ways symbolized to Grizel what she hoped her life in New Zealand would be.  The Fletchers had been very pleasant to her and she had enjoyed the company of both Mr and Mrs Fletcher and the family atmosphere at their house.  She dialed the operator and asked to be connected to the hotel in Christchurch.  Eventually she was transferred through to Mr Fletchers room and she tried to break the news to him as gently but clearly as possible.  She was sure that Mr Fletcher would be on the first plane north and he confirmed that he would be coming back to Auckland as soon as he could book a seat.  This done Grizel went back to the lounge and poured two small brandies and insisted Mrs Fletcher have one.  Then they sat together on the sofa and waited ?

Through out the long night Grizel and Mrs Fletcher sat on the sofa and looked out onto the harbor.  The rain and wind had died away over night and as dawn came long silvery streaks of light played across the sea which was now flat and calm.  Grizel stood up and went to the kitchen.  Mrs Fletcher had finally dozed off and Grizel wanted her to keep sleeping.  She shut the kitchen door and quietly filled the kettle and found a cup and the tea and tea pot.  She wasn?t really hungry but she knew it was going to be a long day so she quickly cooked some toast with honey and sat in the kitchen alcove.  Once she had finished she sat gazing with unseeing eyes and praying for God to spare Lisa and Alexander.  Grizel slipped upstairs to the bathroom and freshened herself up.  She knew Lisa would not mind if she borrowed a fresh blouse and Grizel knew she would probably have to be strong today.

About 9am she heard Mrs Fletcher beginning to stir so Grizel put the kettle on again and prepared a light tray.  Mrs Fletcher protested she didn?t want anything but Grizel persuaded her that she needed to have a least the hot sweet tea.  Once she had drunk that Mrs Fletcher managed half a piece of toast and then she went upstairs and freshened up.  While Mrs Fletcher was upstairs Grizel phoned the police station to see if there was any news.
Just as she was hanging up the phone she heard a car pull up at the front door.  Mr Fletcher had arrived and was paying off the taxi as Grizel opened the door.  He looked weary and haggard and much to Grizels surprise he hugged her as he came in.  Thank you Grizel he said, thank you for being here.

He put his bag and coat down in the hall way and started towards the lounge.  William, oh William cried Mrs Fletcher as she ran down the stairs.  Oh Adele he said as he held her tightly.  Together they went to the lounge.  Grizel stayed in the hall way not quite sure of what to do with her self.  She didn?t want to intrude.  She went back down the hall to the kitchen and made more tea thinking that Mr Fletcher would probably welcome some.  As she took the tray into the lounge and sat it on the coffee table she asked Mr Fletcher would he like to some toast too.  Gratefully he looked up at her and nodded.  Thank you Grizel.

Grizel found herself busy answering the phone as the morning wore on.  The local radio station had heard about the search and had broadcast the news.  As the Fletchers were quite prominent Auckland people many of their friends and Lisas were calling to see if there was any news.  The police had also notified Alexanders parents and the Fletchers had asked them to come over and be with them as they waited.    Grizel found herself making pots of tea and preparing sandwiches and biscuits through the day.

At about 3pm the door bell rang and Grizel went to answer it.  Standing outside were two police officers.  Silently Grizel gestured them inside and took them through to the lounge.  Immediately both men leapt to their feet and looked at the officers.
(leaving everyone hanging, with an evil chuckle)

OK - see I couldn't leave y'all hanging there for the weekend as this is the last post until Monday.

THEY?RE ALIVE the elder officer said.  Oh thank God said Mr Singleton sinking back onto the sofa and grasping his wifes hand.  Where are they Mr Fletcher managed to say despite the tears pouring down his cheeks.

They have been taken to Auckland hospital said the younger of the policemen.  When the storm blew up it dismasted them and they got swept onto the mudflats at the top of the harbor.  They couldn?t leave the boat because of the mud and they had to huddle there until someone saw them.  They both have mild hypothermia but luckily the sail cover was still in the boat so they were able to shelter under that and they were seen about two hours ago but it took a while to be able to get close enough to rescue them.  If you will get your coats we will take you to the hospital so you can see them.

Grizel stood on the far side of the lounge tears of happiness on her face.  She had been dreading what she would hear and to know that Lisa was alive was almost more than she could handle.  She became aware that Mr Fletcher was standing in front of her.  Grizel, for what you have done for us today, I can never repay you but I am so thankful that Lisa has a friend like you.  Mr Singleton also added his thanks.  Will you come to the hospital with us ?  Grizel declined this saying that this reunion was for family only.  She would go and see Lisa tomorrow.  The reaction was catching up to Grizel and she felt so tired taht shw could barely stay up right.  Mr Fletcher called a taxi and saw Grizel settled in it and paid the driver to take her home before he and his wife and the Singletons left for the hospital.

When the taxi reached her gate Grizel could barely muster the strength to get out.  Luckily Deira saw the taxi arrive and came running to the gate to help her.  They are safe Grizel whispered.  Good said Deira.  Now inside with you and into bed.  You are not to talk about it until you have had a good sleep.  Deira half guided Grizel into the house and through to her flat.  She sent Grizel to wash her face and change into a nightdress and she filled two hot water bottles and put them in Grizels bed.  This was where Grizels lack of imagination was a blessing.  Someone like Jo Maynard never could have gone to sleep but Grizel snuggled down between the warm sheets and within minutes was sound asleep.  Deira left quietly shutting the door behind her.

The following weekend Grizel arrived at the Fletchers home to visit Lisa.  She would have come before but Lisa had caught a terrific head cold after spending the night on the mudflats and had banned Grizel from coming near her.  They had spoken on the phone on Monday and Grizel had had difficulty understanding Lisa she was so clogged up but Lisa made it clear that Saturday would be fine.  She didn?t want to risk Grizel catching it and then possible passing it on to Moira or shop customers.  Mrs Fletcher opened the door with a smile and said that Lisa was in the garden on the other side of the house.  Grizel wander on through and found Lisa sitting in the sun in a sheltered corner of the paved area outside the lounge.  Lisa looked up and grinned at Grizel come to see that I?m all in one piece now .

Grizel grinned back and said you are still about pink around the nose.  Believe me I?m happy just to have a nose that is more like normal size.  I thought I was never going to stop sneezing.  Alexander was fine and he flew back to Wellington on Tuesday but until yesterday I was the most awful sight ever.  Mother threatened to cut one of the old sheets up for me to use as I was running out of hankies.  Becoming serious she looked at Grizel and said Thank you for all the help you gave mum and dad.  Dad told me what a great thing it was to have you there and I?m so thankful mum wasn?t left on her own as she just wouldn?t have coped.

Anyway next week I want you on one of your non working days.  Grizel looked at her suspiciously.  There was something about the glint in Lisa s eyes and Grizel had not been a prefect and headgirl for nothing.  That glint said something.

What have you got planned she asked.  I want you to come designing with me.  You know the wedding is planned for February.  Well it?s the end of August now so I better get cracking on things so I want you to come with me to the bridal studio and help me find a dress design and bridesmaid designs.

Me? said Grizel.  Are you sure?  It?s not like Im a fashion expert.

Well you better get to it because you are going to be wearing one of the dresses.  Grizel had been half way through her cup of tea promptly choked and spluttered.  When she could speak she stared at Lisa and said what are you talking about.

Well said Lisa.  I hadn?t actually got anything planned so far except that we are getting married at St Marys on the Sea and the reception is at the Yacht Club afterwards.  Anyway I decided while I was being sick to do some planning so I would like you to be my bridesmaid with Alexs sister Kate.  We are not having a huge wedding ? I know that I could because of dad being so important in Auckland but we decided we would rather have a smaller wedding with just family and friends so there will be about 60 people all up.  I did an invite list and gave it to Alex and he can?t see anyone we have missed so that can go to the printers but the other thing to do is talk to caterers at the yacht club to decide the dinner menu and we have to confirm the band for the dance.

The next few months trundled by busily and happily for Grizel.  She went with Lisa and they spent many days looking in bridal salons before finding the perfect dresses.  Alexs sister Kate had come up from Wellington where she was based.  She was a flight hostess for the national airlines.  She was a slim auburn haired woman very capable and confident and she and Grizel got on famously.   As Grizel was a golden brown hair color and Kate was auburn they had found a wonderful material in a sea colored vivid aquamarine silk.  Both could carry this vivid color and when put against the ivory silk of Lisas wedding dress it looked fantastic.  They had also decided to get the mens ties and waistcoat fronts made in the same material.  St Marys by the Sea was one of the original churches in Auckland.  It was a small white wooden building, only holding about 80 people all up, but it was built on top of a hill looking out over the harbor and the great stained and plain glass windows in the end behind the alter were panoramic.  Inside the seating and floor where all golden Kauri and were over 100 years old.  The pews were polished and shaped by the generations of bottoms that had sat on them.

The dress designs reflected in someways the simplicity of the church and service.  Neither Lisa, Grizel or Kate were given to frills and ruffles and some of the dress designs were just too much.  Lisa had settled on a simple floor length slim dress with a sweetheart neckline with fine lace sleeves and lace to the neck.  Grizel and Kate were in sleeveless slim dresses that finished just below their calves.  All three were to carry bouquets of roses.  Lisa had wanted some informality in the bouquets so instead of the traditional white or red all three had multi colored bouquets that featured yellow, red, pink and white roses.  Lisa was also using vases of roses to decorate the church and the reception dinner.  The sea theme of the aquamarine was being carried over to the reception with the napkins and place mats being that color.  The only note of sadness for Grizel was that after the wedding Lisa would be living in Wellington.  But New Zealand was a very air minded country, possibly due to its rugged interior and there were flights to and from Auckland and Wellington 5 times a day and the fares were not a great deal more than Grizel had paid for train fares in England.

As Christmas approached Grizel also had the fun of selecting presents and sending them off.  She had found a pictorial book on New Zealand birds and plants that she had sent of to the Maynards who were still in residence in Canada.  She posted her step mother a scenic book of New Zealand.  Although Grizel expected no response she remembered Miss Annersleys words and refused to allow her stepmother to affect her.  She had sent cards of to many of her former colleagues and received them in return and put them on her mantle piece.
For Deira she had found a new fireside set as the poker on the old one was rather bent.  Moira had proved more of a problem.  Moira was now five and a bit although she was much older mentally but she had been physically worsening over the past year.  She did not want baby things for Christmas but her physical condition made many of the usual toys totally unsuitable for her.  Grizel and Deira had looked through many advertising brochures in search of ideas.  Grizel had finally had an idea after she had dinner with them one night.  Moira had had a spasm and knocked her cup to the floor where it had broken.  In one catalog was a range of Lucite plates and cups in bright colors and unbreakable.   Deira had agreed and Grizel had gone of and bought two sets of  a dinner plate, bread plate, desert bowl and mug, one in bright yellow the other in orange.  Deira had found a make your own bead jewelry kit.  They thought that even if Moira dropped what she was working on the worst that would happen was they would have to pick up beads.  For that reason Deira bought one that had bigger sized beads and bright colors to make them easy to find.

Grizel and Deira had decided to have Christmas day together so they had brought a Christmas tree for the lounge.  Moira sat in her chair by a table with all the Christmas tree decorations spread on it and directed where they were to be hung. Deira had agreed that she would do the roast chicken as roasts were still a mystery to Grizel even after several interesting attempts but Grizel could peel the veges.  Deira was also making two traditional Irish Christmas puddings.  A smaller one for them on Christmas day and a larger on to take to the Fletchers who had invited Grizel and Deira and Moira who they had met several times to dinner on Boxing day which excited Moira.  Lisa and her parents had accepted Moira without comment and Moira enjoyed meeting with them.

Grizel sat back in the comfortable chair.  It was New Years eve.  She was looking after Moira tonight while Deira went out with some Irish friends and celebrated New Year.  Moira had already gone to bed and after a couple of stories about adventures from the Chalet School, she had settled down to sleep and now Grizel was sitting in the lounge with a gin, lime and lemon and her Christmas box of chocolate on the table beside her.  She had a book with her but just now she was gazing out the window at the full moon.  It was a warm summers night so she had the window open and the insect screen over it.  Listening to the night insects and birds.  Grizel reflected over the last 18 months and the changes that had come her way.  She thought back to the interviews with Miss Annersley and how she had felt then.  It seemed to Grizel that she had accomplished more in the last 18 months than she had before that.  She also felt content within herself socially.  She had met a wide variety of people both through the shop and through Lisa and her friends and felt happy with her group of friends.  She knew that Lisas marriage would change things a little between them but she knew that at the moment marriage was not something she was looking for.  She and Lisa had had a long talk about men and marriage and Grizel had been a little shocked at Lisas frankness about the physical intimacy and the feelings that she felt about Alexander.  Although Grizel knew the biology she had never been exposed to the emotional aspect of things.  Lisa had been frank that she and Alex only wanted two children and not straightaway so she would be using birth control.  For Grizel raised in the Catholic Tyrol and then surrounded by friends such as Jo Maynard, Bernhilda von Eschenau, Gisela Mensch and Wanda von Gluck all of whom seemed to regard having children and lots of them as the be all and end all of marriage these ideas had been somewhat eye opening.   However New Zealand was rather egalitarian and all of Grizels old friends had had Mamsells or nurses or some form of live in home assistance.  When Grizel thought about it she wondered how Jo would ever get on without Anna.  In New Zealand live in home help was not something that occurred.  Mrs Fletcher had a woman that came 2 days a week and did the cleaning and ironing, and they had a gardener but other than that you were one your own..  Many people had no one and women raised the children and did all the house work, cooking cleaning etc themselves.

Grizel heard the first of the sirens go off and the grandfather clock that Deira had brought with her from Ireland began to chime in the hallway.  She lifted her glass to the moon and said heres to you Grizel Cochrane.  May the next year be as good as this one.

But Vikki, it's only because we want more story! After all, I do provide you with a trampoline to play on in your spare time.

*asks for explanation of the term 'spare time'?* ::)

The spare moment you occasionally find in between working, sleeping and yibbling, which you usually waste on eating. ;)

That actually sounds about right! ::) I really need to do some reading sometime too! :( I'm not making it to the books as much lately! :'(

*reminds Vikki that refusal to rise is the automatic response to attempts to thwart, which you did by turning on the CD player* Check your yibbling rulebook! Page 25, paragraph 12b.

Title: Re: Grizel in New Zealand

Title: Re: Grizel in New Zealand

Probably a good idea, although the yibbling has been fun, as always!
