Title: Joeys single life
Post by ali on Dec 3rd, 2003, 2:15pm
After reading loads of fab, if often bizarre drabbles, my mind started wandering down the other trouser leg of time. What if Jack had been working on the day of the picnic to hide the peace league pledge? Would he and Joey have ever got together and what about the triplets? During a sleepless night the idea festered but would have remained securely locked in my brain if I hadn't been off sick today and been teribly bored. I'm not really a writer and no doubt should stay that way but here goes. (Its set during highland twins but obviously has a lot of major differences.)

Madge stood by the window of the salon in the round house gazing anxiously out without really seeing anything. Her mind was on her young sister Joey who was being brought home today by Jem, Madges rock of a husband. She should never have been allowed to leave but despite Madges reluctance Joey had been determined and when she set her mind to do something she usually got her way. They had all known that Jo was too fragile to be a land girl, particularly after the frantic flight from Austria that she had undergone with some of the girls from school, Nell Wilson ( a trusted friend and teacher) and Gottfried Mensch who had needed to escape as much as the girls after being part of the fateful picnic expedition.
Nothing Madge ,Jem or any of Jo's close friends could say would dissuade her from this course of action. From Joeys regular letters Madge could tell that the work was helping to heal Joeys heart following the disasters in Europe. She dwelt on things so much and needed to be constantly occupied to stop her fretting about things she could do nothing to help.
However it had come as no suprise when she had caught a chill which had developed into pneumonia. When she had received a phonecall from some of jo's worried workmates Madge had dispatched Jem immediately to checkher out and if possible bring her home. Luckily Jem had not been needed at the san so he had obeyed his wifes orders and after three days waiting Joey was strong enough to travel. A smile appeared on Madges face now she could mother Joey to her hearts content, her little sister meant the world to her and she would do everything she could to keep her at home.

Definitely - interesting concept and very credible if she hadn't found her solid lump of comfort

Mind you, delicate Joey as a land girl? She's never lugged anything heavier than a tub of water, has she?  ;)

Following that train of thought, I'm surprised none of them ever got called up as "spies" - think of the need for people who were trilingual !!

Didn't we have a very wierd FCS drabble a while back that included that idea? A Job for Jo I think it might have been called.

edit~ found it! here is the link, but be warned it was a very strange one.

Yay, nasty flu bug diminishes in the face of much appreciated kind comments and I've already booked tomorrow off work so I should be able to write a little more after ooodles of sleep.
So on to tonights installment.

The sound of an engine purring brought Madge back to reality. They'd soon be at the door.
"Marie could you put the coffe on," she called to her support and mainstay. Then she rushed to the entrance and waited rather impatiently. Again her mind went back to the time of the Anschluss. Gottfried and Miss Wilson had done their best to keep the runaways safe, but Joey had suffered considerably, her vivid imagination seeing all kinds of terrors. It had been many months of Madges care before she had been able to sleep without nightmares. If only she had met a caring man of her own to guide her through life, Madge mused. Someone to keep her from her impulsive actions - but where that kind of thing was concerned Joey remained still very much a baby, promising to be everybodies favourite maiden aunt. And now most of the suitable men had been drafted, still never give up hope. Madge believed with all her heart that no woman could be complete without a man. Perhaps there was something she could do for Joey, she could hold a few tea parties and evening meals for some of Jems eligable doctor pals, one of them must be able to turn Joeys head and force her to grow up at last.

( It's quite depressing when you read back through your work to realise how truely awful you are at spelling, punctuation and grammer, especially as you are trying to teach our children to do it! Still at least I've learnt to check it.)

A great idea, Ali! I was reading New House the other day and chuckling when Joey says:
"But Bernie and Gisela and Wanda have husbands and babies ... I certainly don't want any husbands ... I simply can't imagine myself darning someone else's socks and pouring our his coffee!"

and I started to think of a very similar plot (our plot bunnies must be communicating!)

I'm really looking forward to seeing where you take this. Oh, and get well soon, although as people said to me on my drabble, well enough to write but not well enough to go back to work! After all, will it really be worth going back on a Friday?!  ;)

Cilla I mean Madge has already developed her own story line, I never wrote that in my little planning book. Her true colours showing through perhaps! Is she responsible for the glut of cs/ doctor romances. Shes ruined several pre written chapters with her matchmaking ideas so back to laying in bed coughing and letting baby plot bunny do her worst.

How do doctors always manage to prescribe the most foul tasting medicines - I'll have to the bottle vikki sent me instead.

"Cooee, Madge I'm back. Fit as a fiddle so you can take that worried look off your face." Joeys voice awoke Madge from her thoughts as the car drew up beside her.
"Well of all the cheek - I've a good mind to send you back straight away," she retorted. Joey looked into Madges face, but despite the harsh words all she could see was love and concern. Joey clambered inelegantly out of the car , all legs, and was quickly embraced by her sister then hustled into the house out of the cold Autumn air. After a grin at their departing figures the ignored Jem went to park the car.

Jo looked around the familiar room as Madge settled her onto the sofa and covered her with a rug. " I'm quite comfy now ta, so you can stop fussing over me as though I'm no older than Josette," quipped Jo quite ungratefully. Madge ignored her knowing full well that jokes were Jo's way of dealing with most things.
"Marie will bring the coffee through in a moment," was all she replied. No doubt you and Jem are parched after the long drive."
"Coffee will be nectar, nobody can make it quite like Marie, I've missed her cooking terribly while I've been away!" She sighed blissfully, "and now I have a whole month of you, Jem ,Maries delectable cooking, the babes, my Robin and the school before I have to return. Its hard work but I need to know I'm helping. When I think of what some of our old girls are going through my small problems seem like nothing." A dark shadow covered her face. Madge shook her head grimly, even more determined that Jo should stay with them. There must be an alturnative that even Jo would deem acceptable.

Went to work like a good girl and they sent me straight home again, still now I can write away to my hearts content.
**********************************************************************
Jem popped his head around the door. " I'll be in my study catching up with correspondence if you need me - as your doctor I recommend total rest and a good gossip, we'll soon have you back on your feet." With that he disappeared knowing he wouldn't be missed.
Jo grinned at her sister infectiously," no change there! he's still as much of a workaholic as ever."
Madge sighed, " It's so busy at the san I hardly ever see him," then with a shrug she added, " I knew what he was when I married him and he looks after me so well, I've nothing to complain about.
Quickly changing subject Jo asked for the latest on all of their family and friends, several hours passed by in the discussion as Jo's nephews and nieces had many a mishap to tell about. After hearing about Daisies encounter with a cross ewe in the field behind the house and laughing until breathless, Joeys expression became more serious. "It's a shame they're back at school, I was so looking forward to seeing them, especially the Robin. I can't believe I have been away from her for so long, the girls in my dorm at the farm were good company even if they had some slightly different ideas to me, but they weren't the same as family." She had a far away look in her dark, deep eyes that told Madge more than any words. Not wanting Jo to dwell on the past she quickly answered.
" Well you'll have to learn some patience my girl. she's weekly boarding with those highland twins of Jean Mackenzies that you lumbered me with. Speaking of which, I wish you could have been there when they arrived, they were in full costume and eveyone was staring. I got them into regular clothes as quickly as possible. Shiena got posted almost immediately and we decided in the end that it would be better for them to be at the school, take their minds off other things. They're shy little things but have settled in well and are good friends with some of the Guernsey lot." As hoped this got Jo's attention.
" Ahhh school," she sighed wistfully. Then she leapt up "lets go now. I'm dying to see everyone. I can't wait to see their faces when I roll up unexpectedly! You haven't told them I'm back have you?"
Madge couldn't help laughing. "You baby, and no I won't take you, you heard what Jem said about rest. You may as well get resigned to the fact that you're staying home for a week. You'll see Rob on Friday evening and Josette shall come down from the nursery for tea, but you'll have to be content with that.
Madge sent Joey for a nap and when she emerged it was with more colour in her cheeks and quite an appitite. She manageda decent meal then they chatted a while about old friends. She shared her thoughts on how to help Frieda through the worry of Bruno being away. " As she's so close I thought that in the holidays she should take the highland twins, that will keep her mind of such things, and she'll be over to visit you later in the week." After a pause, hoping Joey wouldn't get suspicious she went on. " Thats the rest of your quartette happily married now, only you left to be a blushing bride."She took a sideways look at Joey butdidn't even get a rise out of her.
" I'm glad they are all happy, they do deserve it, the dears. And they know good old Auntie Jo will always be available to helpout when needed! Madge gave up and moved onto another old friend, Jack Maynard. At one time she had had hopes for them but realised it was just good honest friendship.
"Jacks joined his ship, it's quite a responsibility being a ships doctor but I expect it will come easily to him.Do you hear from him at all?" She queried.
Oh yes, good old Jack has been a great correspondent, he's almost part of the family isn't he? a big brother whilst Dicks away." She really must write to him now he was the one away from home and she was with his adoptive family.

The week passed slowly for Jo, she began work on a new book, saw Frieda a few times and helped to look after Josette. There was so little help around at the moment, Madge only had Marie and her pretty young cousin Anna, so Jo was trying to do her bit to help. By the end of the second week she was suffering deep boredomand was beginning to look forward to her return to work. It was lovely to visit the school but her abscence for so long made her feel a little of an outsider. There were girls and staff she didn't even know!
She even missed the company of other girls her age, she had had it since Madge had started the school and the work as a land girl had given her that sense of belonging again. Admittedly some of the girls had rather different upbringings and ideas to her own but it took allsorts as the saying went.

Whilst reading to her litle namesake Jo heard the phone ring. She couldn't make out the topic of the muffled conversation between Madge and whoever it was and was suddenly startled as Madge let out a loud squawk and slammed down the phone." Joey Joey where are you now!" She sounded agitated yet pleased at the same time. There's been an emergency and only you can help."

Weird - I'm finding myself wishing that Joey would see that Jack is more than a big brother to her - they just seem so fated to be more than good friends

"Calm down Madge Macheree, what can I do for you" said Joey sauntering outof the room and into the hall.
"That was Hilda on the phone, she quite stuck, doesn't know where to turn but I told that of course you'd only be too pleased to assist after all the chalet school has done for you."
"Don't be so cryptic, and what have you let me in for now. You know I only have a few weeks here and I had so much planned now I'm allowed out! Lots of fun, frivolous things that I can't usually do. Come on, out with it. Don't keep me in suspense." Joey sank onto the nearest chair and waited expectantly, it must surely be a matter of life or death if Hilda was at a loss.
Madge however knew that she would have a bit of ground work to do before she could get Joey on her side. " About you returning to the farm, you don't have to you know, if you do this it will be just as valuable, if not more so than gardening." This didn't help her as Joey was rather proud of what she had been doing. ( Although if you asked some of the others with her you might have been excused for thinking she did very little and what she did manage was often redone by others. She wasn't really built to farm but she kept spirits high and the others had decided that they needed to reeducate this soft girl, show her life!) So Joey sat staring stonily at Madge, who realising her error carried on quickly.
" I mean helping to educate the very people who are our future, who will rebuild our nation, who will show the world the true meaning of peace. To be in the same building as the peace league and protect from the evil that is Nazism. What more could a single woman ask for until she is ready to care for her man instead and provide the next generation herself." Madge was in her element her rousing speech echoed around the hall. Jo looked mortified at the mention of... well... unmentionables, then refocused on the beginning of the speech.
"Educate, you mean teach, I'm buying no pigs in pokes from you my dear so explain yourself. You know that after the last time, I vowed never to teach again." With that she folded her arms and waited.
"But Jo you said yourself how useful it was to have the teachers perspective for your books, and this could give you lots of inspiration." Madges face had dropped but she plodded on. "I know you didn't really enjoy it but one of the history misresses has had a tragic bereavement, a brother in the forces. She really wants to go home to her parents for the duration, she'll soon get a teaching role in any school and Hilda really wants to let her go." Her voice and face grew softer causing Jo to look up. " What if it was Dick, or Jem, wouldn't you want someone to do the same for you or me. God gave us our talents to use to help others, if we waste them how can we expext god to help us. Yet he always does."
She knew she was almost there. One last angle to try. "You were saying the other day how much you missed the school, Robin, me, not to mention decent food. This is your chance, you might not get another. You'll get to know all the staff and pupils, as is befitting the very first pupil and you'll get time to write. Hilda has promised it should be teaching only, no extra duties and home every weekend. So now what do you think? Do say yes."
Abruptly Joey stood up. "I'm going to my room to think it through." and with that Madge had to be satisfied.

And so it was that Joey returned, again, to teaching at the chalet school. Madge was gratified that her plan had suceeded so far and started to put the next part of into action.
As  for Jo herself, she had gone one step further in her line of thought. Hilda, Nell, Jeanne, Matey and co got all they needed from the school so perhaps her life should become one of the spinster teacher, who knows possibly becoming the head herself in the distant future. (When she was old, not for many years to come!) Until then she could have her finger in every pie, be in on every decision and hopefully be able to use her gift of butting in to change the life of many unsuspecting pupil. Oh yes this wasn't what she had planned for her life but now she was getting accostomed to the idea it had a lot of potential.

Joey sat on the old bus as she journeyed home pondering her first two weeks at school. On the whole it had been a sucess (as far as she was concerned!) although there had been that incident with Miss thingy. Joey's mind blanked out the name of her foe as though to deny her meant she didn't exist, and hopefully before too long she would convert her into another Jo Bettany worshipper. Sitting back thinking over the incident she became aware of another possible problem. When she had kindly offered her advice on the best way to tackle the common problem of naughty middles there had been several other members of staff present in the staffroom at the time, and when that woman had said she preferred to deal with it in her own way, they hadn't backed her up. If she had only realised that by explaining how valuable the advice of the first pupil and rather more importantly best head girl the school had ever seen she had alienated two of her friends. Mary Burnett and Gillian Linton both believed they had been excellent headgirls in their own ways and were of course correct. Their styles were different to that of Jo's but worked just as well. You needed variety and change to keep moving the school forward as well as to keep those young monkeys on their toes. While discussing it afterwards they realised that Jo had changed while she had been away, and not for the better. If she wasn't careful she would make enemies of many of the staff and pupils. It was their duty, as previously very close friends and admirers of Jos, to help her to settle down, fit in and lose the hint of vulgarity she seemed to have picked up. How could Madge not have noticed it.

Jo was travelling alone that night as the others were staying on at school for various reasons. The twins had begged to become full boarders and the Robin had a meeting with the rest of special sixth about their entertainment which was next weekend. As Jo entered the house she was immediately assailed by Madge. "There you are , I thought you'd never arrive. Change quicklyinto one of your evening frocks, that pretty green one suits your colouring best, and sort yourself out."
"Hurrah, a party, who's coming? Frieda, Marie some of my other friends?
Madge stopped for a moment thinking how selfish Jo had become recently and replied archly, "Not everything revolves around you. We are having a small gathering for some of Jems work colleagues and need to make a good impression."
Jo groaned thinking dull, dull, dull. Then moving on to think, not about me huh, I wonder. "Can't I go up-stairs and keep out of sight, I was looking forward to a quiet evening with a book in front of the fire. It's been a hectic week and you won't want a young girl spoiling their important discussions."
"Absolutely not, now you've got half an hour so hurry up, I need you to help with the drinks. Marie and Anna will be busy with the food and Rosa will be taking care of Joseete as usual!"

Precisely thirty minutes later Jo made an appearance in the salon. She was wearing the green dress as requested, but what had she done to her hair?

Sorry but Jo's hair will have to wait !

Whilst Jo was busy giving herself a make over Miss Robinson sat in the staff room to all intent and purpose marking a great stack of books. Anyone watching said stack of books would have noticed it didn't get any smaller and that the marker sat with a glazed expression on her rather attractive young face. She was brought out of her reverie by the purposefully loud sound of people scraping chairs across the floor to sit beside her.
"I hope you don't mind us joining you, but we wondered if we could have a chat," began Gill.
"Please do, I'd be greatful for a break, not that I seem to be getting anywhere anyway," she responded attempting to sound light hearted. Then suddenly worried she continued," Is something wrong? I haven't made a mistake about anything have I?"
"Of course not, you're doing a splendid job and I loved the way you dealt with those troublesome middles! A day with the kindergarten should soon put a stop to such childish behaviour across the whole school." Mary answered with a friendly smile.
Helen returned the smile if a little faintly. "So you don't think it would have been better to have listened to Jo then?" she asked with some trepardation, knowing of the close relationship the other two shared with the schools newest member of staff.
"Absolutely not, we loved the way you fitted the crime to the punishment, and so would Jo usually. She's not quite herself at the moment, she 's been through some traumatic times over the last few years and she's suddenly reacting to it all."
Helen took a moment to digest this then felt brave enough to take the subject further. "Its just that from all I'd heard I felt so sure we'd get on well, become good friends but for some reason she seems to have taken a dislike to me."
Mary paused looking for the right words. "It's not you, its more that you are new, you represent the changes in Joeys life and she does hate change, especially when its not of her doing. She tries to deal with it by either ignoring it or by battering it into submission. She was this bad once before, when she had to take over from me as headgirl unexpectedly."
Gillian took up the story. "Madame told me she had made a real fuss about it, complaing and sulking until they almost decided to chose someone else. Then suddenly she came back from an old friends house totally resigned to it. At the moment her whole life is spinning, her close friends are all married or working, the school has been developing without her and she feels as though she is losing grasp of everything dear to her."
Mary brought the discussion to a close," try to ignore her just a little longer. We've found the solution and we're just waiting for her to arrive!"

(I don't know Miss Robinsons real name so this is her middle name which she has suddenly decided to use.... in the style of EBD!)

Alright alright!

Madge looked up and gave a horrified screech. Your hair, your beautiful long silky hair, where is it? And it took so long to grow it. It would seem that Jo had struggled with her hair while dressing, getting caught in her zip and had found that borrowing Jems razor and completely shaving it off was the only solution!

Only joking, as if I would.

"Where have your beautiful earmuffs gone,"  murmured Madge as she walked slowly around that person to get the full effect
"Well they were terribly heavy and such a nuisance when I was in a hurry. While I was away the girls used to give me such a ribbing about having an old fashioned style. I was looking in the mirror as I was dressing and thought I'd try to do something about it so I chopped off the plaits. It looked dreadful, but luckily that dear Anna, how I love her, saw my sad plight and trimmed it. She always does the babes and is ever so good at it.!" Jo giggled as she told her tale, getting into another scrape had returned her almost to her old self, for now. "How do you like it? I think its rather swish myself."
Madge contemplated Jo for a while and then decided that actually the sleek, smooth bob in the latest of styles suited Jo very much and smiled. "Actually I love it you look so much more grown up and sophisticated, now you'll have to start behaving in that manner.
Jo grinned. "Unlikely!" she quipped. "But just think of the sensation it will cause on monday morning, the others will just colapse with shock!"
"You baby , will you never grow up.!
"I certainly hope not, its not half as much fun." Jo diappeared to get a drink having the last word as usual.

Post by ali on Today at 9:18pm
Surely you'd rather know about Madges special evening, Mary and Gills visitor can't catch a train until tomorrow as they're all delayed. There is a war on you know.
                 *************************************

They poured themselves a glass of wine each and settled down to wait for the visitors. Jem appeared looking shifty and quickly helped himself to the drinks cabinet.. He wasn't terribly comfortable with the real reason for tonights gathering and was desperately hoping that the san would call with an emergency that only he could deal with so he could do his usual uncomfortable situation disappearing act. "So who are these very important colleagues then Jemsie," Jo joked. "They must be royalty at the very least, I don't usually make this much effort when I'm being friend of the heir in Belsornia." Then she sadly added, "I wish we knew where Veta was, there's been no news for months and we know they've been annexed."
To stop Jo becoming despondent, which wouldn't help the evening to go with a swing, Madge started to discuss the visitors. To make them seem more promising she decided first names would be best. "Duncan, Frank and Nigel from the san are coming. They all live in the doctors quarters so we thought a night in a proper homely atmosphere might be nice."
"Doctors quarters, I take it they don't have wives with them then?" Madge turned suspiciously pink and Jo groaned, "so what, am I the prize this evening, a chance to get a foot in the door with the boss by taking his ages spinster sister-in-law off his hands. Well I can't promise anything but I'll try to make it an interesting evening they'll not forget in a long time!"
The pink deepened in Madges face, perhaps this had been a mistake. She'd forgotten how unpredictable Jo could be, so busy had she been with her plans so she crossed her fingers hoping Jo wouldn't be too outrageous. It was too late to cancel now so she responded by becoming very much the older sister. "Really Josephine, not everything is about you, they are here as a thank you for all the extra hours they've been putting in thanks to the staff shortages. And don't be so vulgar. It is not terribly becoming in a young lady." In response Jo drained her drink, poured another and disappeared to the toilet.
As she returned she could hear voices in the salon. Jem was pouring drinks and the visitors who had come together to save petrol were making polite conversation with Madge wondering what the evening was all about. Jo paused for a moment at the door and scrutinised the three man, mentally assessing them and working out which would be the least dull to sit next to at dinner. She eyed up her potential partners. Number one, sandy hair that needs a trim, bad dandruff and a crumpled suit, looked a bit needy and as though he might be hard work. Number two, good from behind, shame about the front, but he looked like he might be a good laugh. Number three, well he cetainly had the picture show looks that some of the girls at the farm swooned over, but he looked as if he knew it. Well she'd better get it over with, realising her drink needed refreshing she swanned gaily into the room and as she emptied the bottle of white into her glass she announced, "Good evening gentlemen, well here I am, what do you think?
Madge now turned puce and the three doctors looked at each other unsure of how to respond to such an entance.
Two hours later the visitors made their excuses and left. They were quite shocked and not a little charmed by the doctors sister-in-law, she seemed to drink like a fish and told the most outrageous stories that couldn't possibly be true, could they. Jo found she had quite enjoyed herself after all but Madge heaved a sigh of relief vowing no more match making, at least not for Joey.
"What did you think then?" asked Jem, he had also indulged in a fair few beverages and was feeling relaxed. He hoped they'd made a good impression as Jo deserved a good man and she was really a very special girl, funny, charming, thoughtful, sensitive, attractive if not beautiful in the usual sense of the word, irritating, over the top but all in all she had real depth of character. Jem suddenly closed off such thoughts, he shouldn't be thinking about his beloved Madges sister in such a way. He cetainly couldn't afford any scandals if he wanted that royal patronage he was hoping for. Madge would so love the status of being a "lady". Anyway, unbeknown to Madge he had his own plans for Joey and his own good friend Jack Maynard.
Whilst all this was going through Jems head Jo was contemplating the three men. "Duncan"  she said how on earth could you imagine I'd even consider him, sooo dull. Frank Peters, now him I like. Not in that way," she added hurriedly. " Lovely chap, very amusing, but at the back of the queue when looks were given out. Nigel was obviously at the front of the queue and took Franks looks as well as his own! But I couldn't spend my life with a man who took more time in the bathroom than me on a morning." She let out a giggle. "I'm feeling a little funny now, I think I'd better retire. Madge darling, don't worry about me. I'm happy as I am at the moment, stop feeling you have to get me settled down." A look passed over Joeys face and she dashed off to her room to lay down, hoping that the strange swimmy feeling would soon pass. As Madge passed the room on her way to her own bed she lovingly tucked Jo in and placed the bin by the bedside. Just in case.
