Title: Trampolinist
Post by Angel on Dec 17th, 2003, 11:16pm
OK, so it got swallowed. I have the whole of the drabble archived, although will be changing the end of the last two posts.

The side-effect, however, is that I shall probably post larger chunks, more irregularly, as I'll do it on Word first, although you may get postings randomly [grins]. I'm learning not to underestimate the evils of these bunnies...

This should also mean that I'll be able to post to the thread without having mangled fingers from the bunnies, and will be able to answer questions about the plot. If you want to give detailed feedback, I'll be posting the chapters already written onto my livejournal. This should avoid giving spoilers on here. Comments on LJ will include spoilers, but it can be avoided :)

I'll be away from Keyboard most of next week. The story will be taken up from here:
~-*-~
Andrea was focusing on Nancy, because there was something about Joey that was discomfittingly familiar. She didn't quite know what, and had wanted to get away from the situation in order to be able to work it out. As it was, Nancy had provided an adequate excuse, and she threw a dazzling, sincere smile at the old lady who was busily collecting the new words that the bouncy ones were throwing up.

"Of course, there was no coaching book, no rules, and you made it up as you went along."
"Coaching from first principles."
"No, writing the first principles. We tried having the trampoline up against the walls, and literally bounced off them. And of course, they were fixed frame ones."
"Oh, fun. Kind of makes up for the solid beds, then."
"What a revelation the half inch was - you can't imagine. You should have seen the first barani I turned - it was nearly a fliffis."
"What do you think I learnt on? a seventies edition solid, half-size Nissen. And then went onto a string Goliath - hit the ceiling in a Full Back." Nancy groaned in sympathy.
"Where was this?"
"School in Somerset. Wasn't there long, and the next one didn't have anyone. I used to go to the beach ones until they were banned - but didn't you get help from the Army around here? It was after all an army training device."
"Where do you think we got it from. One of our American families gave it to the school. Hilda's acceptance of the device didn't allow for the entertainment of a young male instructor on the premises though."

Andrea's need to get away was fast dominating her thinking, and she was struggling to follow the conversation. Nancy's accent wasn't the easiest in the world to follow, and the enforced french had put even more stress on an already difficult situation.
She forced herself to stay calm, trying to avoid the inevitable panic attack, and was relieved to see Renata return.
She asked where the toilet was, and, as she expected, Renata offered to show her there.

"They're lovely, those two, aren't they. My Grandmother was one of the foundation stones as well - my mother married very late indeed, well they both did."
"What are you studying?"
"I'm doing my IB, but I want to be a sports coach. Dad says it's a waste, that i'll change my mind. I'm to do the BG coaching course when I turn 18, and then I start at Millie's, doing a physio course - that's what i'm doing here, looking at the physio that we offer to the residents, and doing care work."
Andy nodded, pleased to have picked up such an enthusiastic student. She could well understand the anti-ambition, and felt herself warm to the girl.
"What about you?"
"I kind of fell into it by accident, really. Is this the door?"
Renata looked a little embarrassed, and moved aside to let Andrea go past, fully on her dignity as mistress of the Chalet School.

I've been advised that if I wanted to submit this to GGB, I'd have to take it offline.

----

Andrea went to the old girls, and found them with another visitor, a young looking woman with a cheerful face, who had a dove on her lapel, and was wearing a black shirt that should have had a clerical collar in it.
She turned to Renata, and expressing a desire not to interrupt them, slipped out onto the playing fields.
Some of the Platzervolk were playing volleyball, and Andrea went to join them, and found herself dragged in to make up a team. She found herself enjoying the late afternoon, and managed to cope with the game, acquitting herself well.
The teams were Support Workers, from Martha and Mary's respectively, and they seemed keen when she talked about her idea of some sort of staff trampoline club.
"It gets so *boring* when you're up here in the summer. Pretty much everyone evacuates elsewhere, and as it's just the school you tend not to get the tourists. They use some of the chalets for summer camps and a youth hostel, but other than that it's dull. We usually wind up spending lots of money going into Berne.

*divided between wanting more NOW and wanting GGBP to publish this*

Anyway, whatever you decide Angel, it's wonderful!
