Title: Re: Juliet's Childhood ~ Part three Post by Abi on Jan 13th, 2004, 11:49am The Carricks duly arrived, and it was with enormous apprehension that Juliet wended her way to the study. As she entered she saw that her fears had been well grounded. Captain Carrick was adept at presenting a good appearance when it pleased him, but it was an impossible task even for his skill to put a really good face on this. The best he could do was pretend to accept it with a good grace, and when Juliet entered he was smiling at the Headmistress. His daughter was not decieved. She observed instantly the wolfish quality behind the smile and was well aware that her father was furiously angry. Probably with herself. Dorita Carrick was not smiling. Her face was white, and Juliet wondered why she looked so worried. She remembered the thought she had had when she was trying to work out why her parents had left her as they had. She had thought then that there must be something badly wrong, and now it seemed that her mother was still worrying about that. “Poor mother,” Juliet caught herself thinking. “She looks awfully unhappy.” She found herself feeling a sudden, unexpected pity for her mother. Then she shook herself and listened to what Lindley was saying. “Juliet, go and pack whatever you will need for a few days. We are removing you from this school as of today.” After what Miss Sniggins had said and her own surmises, this was only what she had expected, and as no-one else seemed to have anything to say to her she replied submissively, “Yes, father,” and thankfully escaped. As she packed her nightcase she wondered whether she would be permitted to say goodbye to her friends. Eventually she decided that knowing her parents they would probably refuse, so instead of returning to the study immediately she hastened off to the common room, where she expected to find her friends. “Julie!” called Mavis. “What’s up now? The Snig seems to be enjoying your company a lot at the moment!” Juliet gritted her teeth, but came and stood in front of her friend. “Mavis…” Something in her voice caught the attention of both Mavis and Dorothea, and they stared up at her. “What’s happened, Julie?” asked Dorothea, uneasily. Juliet spoke with difficulty. “I just thought I’d come and let you know. I’m leaving.” The jaws of most of the girls in the room dropped. It was Mavis who recovered first. “But – why?” she gasped. “And when?” Juliet’s lips pinched. “Now,” she said succinctly. “I just came to say goodbye.” “But you can’t just leave, like that,” protested Dorothea feebly. “I can. I am,” said Juliet. “Goodbye.” She turned and quickly walked out of the room. Once outside she stood still for a moment, clenching and unclenching her fists. Then she picked up the nightcase, which she had left at the door, and went quickly down the corridor towards the study. Half an hour later they had left Miss Sniggins and the school, never to return. |

Title: Re: Juliet's Childhood ~ Part three Post by Abi on Jan 19th, 2004, 9:38am Yaaaayyyyy!!! At last the Y-drive is back up.... so here is what I had written. There is more which I haven't had time to type up yet - in fact I've finished the story. 8oo They left India almost as soon as they had exited the school. Indeed, their departure was so hasty that it smacked strongly of flight. Juliet was furiously angry with her parents. That brief moment of sympathy for her mother had long since vanished and she felt that she had never hated as she did now. As a matter of fact, Lindley and Dorita were equally irate over the situation. Lindley had not been exaggerating when he wrote that he could not afford to keep Juliet – his debts were such that he had been unable to pay many of them off and in a moment of unusual peace with his wife he confided the entire sad story to her. I have said before that Dorita was not a predictable person, and instead of berating him with her uncontrolled tongue she seemed to understand and want to help and support him. It had been her idea to leave Juliet with Miss Sniggins. The Carricks did not go to England. They made for Europe and lingered there for some time, moving frequently and leaving across the continent a trail of wrathful hotel and guesthouse proprietors who had not been paid. Juliet was dragged round after them and her resentment festered and grew. She hated the way they treated her as a parcel, to be picked up, carried round and dumped down at their will. The situation was not helped by Dorita, who quite irrationally blamed her daughter for Miss Snigigns’ success in catching up with them, and who continued to treat Juliet with an acidic sharpness that made her grind her teeth and become sulky and rebellious. Perhaps the most aggravating thing was that Dorita continually scolded her and nagged at her when there were other people around. It was as though she wanted to show them what a reprobate she had for a daughter – to humiliate Juliet in ublic. It was hardly surprising that Juliet determined that she would not sit down under this treatment. One of the worst incidents between them occurred when they were in a little-known town in France. Juliet had been gazing, enchanted, into the window of a small shop that sold all sorts of fascinating toys. Dorita came up behind her. “Juliet!” she said, in her high-pitched, penetrating voice. “Come away from that window. How dare you stare into it like that with the – the – that vulgar curiosity!” Juliet hunched her shoulders and her lips pinched together so that there was a line of white around her mouth. But although she stiffened, she did not move. Dorita grasped her arm and shook it violently. “Come here this minute!” Her voice rose shrilly and Juliet struggled to free herself. “Let me go,” she said in a low voice because she did not want to attract undue attention (and there was already an enthusiastic audience gathering). Dorita had no such scruples. “How dare you?” she cried, and losing her head completely she raised the hand that was not gripping Juliet and slapped her full across the face. |
