*Hopping from one page to another.
I suppose Dorita's feeligs seem logical - to her, but it's such a shame she allowed herself to become so bitter.
Feeling really sorry for Juliet, not only do her parents not want her, her substitute parents are being kept from her by her mother's attitude.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease can we have some more story soon?

I want to see the scene where Juliet gets abandoned at her "Hills" school and daddy Carrick gets caught by the Head!

Oooooh, have I been archived, how exciting!

Slightly worried by Rachel's bloodthirsty tendencies  ;D .... Anyway, here's the next bit.

Blanche avoided Dorita for some time after she had had her son, and it was not until he was a month old that she at last came, nervously, to the Carricks’ bungalow. She did not bring Jonathan with her. Dorita saw her coming and was ready for her. As Blanche entered the room Dorita rose to her feet. Blanche knew immediately that her erstwhile friend was hostile to her, and it made her task all the more difficult.

“Rita,” she began hestitantly. “I – I’m sorry I haven’t come to see you earlier. I – have been so tired – with – with –”

“With your dear little son?” suggested Dorita acidly.

“Well, I –” Blanche bit her lip. “He hasn’t been christened yet. We wondered whether you and Lindley might like to be his Godparents?” There, it was out. Dorita could take it or leave it. She hoped she would take it. Dorita’s finely marked eyebrows lifted.

“Oh, I see,” she said bitterly. “You think you can have a son and then ask me to be his Godmother. I see. I suppose you think I’ll be a good, sensible girl and stop missing my Andrew. Well I tell you,” her voice rose. “I’ll never forget him, whatever you try and make me do. He was my son and now he’s been taken away from me. I suppose you’re glad about it, of course!”

Blanche was rather white by this time, and her eyes looked dark and stormy. But she had a temper of her own, though it rarely came to the surface, and now she flashed out herself.

“Oh yes? And I suppose you think you’re all I ever think about? You and your happiness! Well, I have thought about it a lot, but believe me, you don’t deserve it and you haven’t for quite some time. Just because you’ve lost your son – what about Angela? She’s lost her husband, but has she moaned and wailed about it? No. She’s picked herself up and got on with life. She’s remembered she still has something left to live for. Her son. You’ve got more than she has – you have a husband and a daughter. If you thought less about yourself and more about other people you’d realise that my son is my son, and that he’s to do with my happiness, not yours. I’ve invited you to share him and you don’t want to. All you think about is you, and nothing else. You’re just plain, downright selfish!”

“Selfish? Me? What about you? You’re the selfish one. You haven’t thought about me at all. You’ve gone off and had your stupid Jonathan and you just don’t care what I think or what happens to me at all. I used to think we were friends, but now –”

“You’re right,” said Blanche, with bitter meaning in her tones. “I thought we were friends too. I thought you were a decent sort. Now I know better. Goodbye, Dorita. I know Angela will love to be Godmother to Jonathan.” She turned and left the room. A moment later Dorita heard the front door close quietly. She turned, picked up a pretty vase – it had been a gift from Blanche – and flung it vindictively to the floor. It shattered.

Thank you Lesley  :)

Meanwhile, Blanche had returned to her own home, where Ralph was waiting for her. As soon as he saw her face he surmised what had happened, but waited for her to comment. Blanche sat down violently and repeated her last words.

“I thought Rita was my friend. I thought she liked me. I’ll never speak to her again.” Ralph glanced at her and spoke placidly,

“What did she say?” His wife’s mouth contracted and her eyes narrowed.

“Said I hated her and always had, and I’d had Jonathan simply to spite her and that I never thought about her or her feelings. Well,” savagely, “I never will again. I’ve done with Dorita Carrick. If that’s what she thinks of me she can have it.” Ralph appeared to be interested in nothing but lighting his pipe, and it was a moment or two before he spoke again.

“What about Juliet?” Blanche’s head jerked sharply up and she stared at him.

“What about her?” Her husband smiled across at her and made a dismissive gesture.

“Oh, nothing, really. Just wondering how she’d get on with the jolly atmosphere that seems to be prevailing over there. But, kids are hardy, you know. She’ll get used to it.” He leant back and puffed at the pipe, only watching Blanche out of the corner of his eye. She sat very still. At last she lifted her head again and smiled ruefully at Ralph.

“You always know just how to get me, don’t you?” she said. “Ok, you’re right – as always. But I tell you – it’s only for Juliet’s sake that I’ll say I’m sorry to Rita.” Ralph chuckled and held out his hand.

“Come here, Blanche.” She came over and put her arms round him. “You’re a good girl,” was all he said, but Blanche knew what lay behind the words. There was silence in the room for some time.

And a wee bit more....

Back in the Carrick’s home things were not going so smoothly. Lindley had entered the room to find his wife stamping viciously on the pieces of the vase.

“What in the world are you doing?” he asked, somewhat tactlessly. Dorita turned a furious countenance towards him.

“What d’you think I’m doing, you fool? Fording the river, or embroidering a lamp-shade?” Lindley blinked.

“No, of course not. But what’s happened, Rita?” Dorita made a strangled noise indicative of deep wrath, then got control of herself enough to speak.

What’s happened, my dear idiot, is that that – that cat Blanche has just been here and gloating over me because of her horrible baby and wanting us to be its Godparents.” She spluttered to a standstill, and Lindley looked confused.

“What’s wrong with that? Rather nice of them, I’d say.” This was hardly the wisest thing to say to Dorita when she was in a thorough-paced rage, and she turned on him like the cat to which she had compared Blanche.

“Oh yes, frightfully nice of them, don’t you think? How lovely for us when they can sit there and laugh at us because they have a son and we don’t!” Her voice rose again to a crescendo. “You’re so blind. Can’t you see that they don’t care about us at all? All they want is for themselves to be happy, no matter who has to get hurt for them. Well, I’m not going to be hurt!” The last words were shrieked, and something inside Lindley snapped. He shouted above the noise his wife was making.

“Shut up Dorita, and listen to me! You’re acting like a little kid. You’re imagining things and making mountains out of molehills. Just pull yourself together and act like a mature adult.” He strode out of the room and slammed the door behind him.

Dorita stood there and breathed heavily, her fists clenching and unclenching at her sides. She looked down at the sharp fragments of fine china that lay around her, and slowly her anger died away. Horror stole over her as she gazed at the destruction – not only the ruins of a beautiful object, but also the wreck of the best friendship Dorita had ever had. The friendship of someone who always cared for her, whatever she did, who was ready to laugh with her when she was happy and to share her troubles when misfortune arose. As she made her way to a chair, bits of the vase crunched under her feet. She sank down and buried her head in her hands.

“What have I done?” she whispered to herself. “Oh, Blanche, I never meant it. I’m so sorry.”

Well, you can have what I've written, but it's not much...

The following few years or so were relatively uneventful. I say relatively; in fact, the affairs of the Carricks slowly but steadily declined in agreeability and increased in interest to their neighbours. Dorita, as might be expected, was the main protagonist. She and Blanche healed their breach and returned once more to a state of mutual regard. Yet it was not completely a resumption of their former intimacy. Dorita had been horrified at her actions, but it was the loss of her friendship that mattered to her. She took back with difficulty what she had said about Blanche and Andrew because she knew that if she omitted to do so Blanche would refuse to forgive her, but she continued to resent the fact that Blanche had a son and she did not relent in her attitude to Juliet.

::) ::) You lot are never satisfied! Actually I spent this afternoon writing this and Augusta so here you go......

As Juliet grew up she could not help but notice her parents abnormal attitude towards her. She was looked after by Blanche, who became more and more devoted to the small girl through the months and years she acted as Dorita’s substitute. Unfortunately, she could not explain away the apparent indifference of Dorita and Lindley to their offspring, and eventually she told Juliet as much as she could of the story, having been forbidden to mention Andrew. It was natural that Juliet should come to resent her parents, and even on occasions when Dorita did deign to notice her daughter, that child did nothing to help matters.

Lindley and Ralph continued to be friends and watched with an amused condescension the friction between their respective wives. Lindley, being generally easy-going, was less hostile towards Juliet, although he took little noice of her. This was at first. As time went on the two men seemed to grow naturally apart. From being close friends, by the time Juliet was twelve they could only be described as acquaintences, they greeted one another and passed the time of day, but there was none of the camaraderie that had once characterised their relationship.

One of the main reasons for this was undoubtedly that Lindley began to spend more and more time away from home. He could hardly be blamed for this, since Dorita’s company was becoming decreasingly congenial. She suspected, if she did not know, that Blanche’s friendship was more for Juliet’s sake than her own, but not wanting to lose almost the only real friend she had she pretended she did not realise this. Instead, she took out her anger on Lindley. Irritable, bitter, short-fused. It was no wonder that he absented himself so frequently. With the excuse of work – and indeed there were various disturbances and things that needed his attention – he would go off. Sometimes he was away only a few hours, sometimes a day or two, and once or twice he was away for weeks at a time. Dorita never knew whether it really was work that called him away or something else. In her present mood she was generally inclined to think it was the something else.

Juliet was not sent to school until she was ten years of age. Before that Blanche taught her what she could, but eventually she lost patience, well aware that the Carricks were making use of her. She consulted them and insisted that they educate their daughter properly. With a bad grace a school about a mile from the bungalow in the Hills was chosen and Juliet sent there as a day girl. She was happy there – happy to be away from home, where she had to avoid her mother and father or endure their scowls. Happy, too, to be in the company of other girls, since her parents had refused to allow her many acquaintances. She was an intelligent girl and did well at school.

The only reason that Blanche worried about her was the fact that Juliet made few friends. Perhaps it was something to do with her earlier life – yet other only children fit in perfectly well at school. It eventually transpired that Juliet felt that she it would hardly be fair on her new companions.

“You see,” she explained gravely. “They all visit each other and go to tea, and I know Mother and Father wouldn’t let me have anyone, so I don’t think it’s fair of me to take advantage of them like that.” Blanche fully appreciated the difficulty, and suggested that Juliet invite her friends to the Mertons’ home when she wished to. Ralph concurred in this and Juliet was almost tearfully grateful. Quite soon she had a number of good friends, and Blanche rejoiced, for she had never seen the child so happy.

Juliet had been at school for some three years when things began to change again. Captain Carrick – as he now was – had been spending more time away from home than before. Dorita had confronted him and accused him of all sorts of things, all of which he had strenuously denied. But he seemed annoyed when he found that she had been spending money unnecessarily and said that she was reckless and did not seem to care how much he had to slave away working for them all.

“Well, you’ve never minded before,” pointed out his wife with some asperity. Lindley glowered at her.

“I mind now,” he said shortly. Dorita unwisely continued the subject.

“Why should you?” she demanded. “We need new curtains, Lindley. Surely you’re not going to –”

“For heaven’s sake, woman! We had new curtains about two weeks ago!”

“It was two years, and they’re –”

“Two years!” Lindley rolled his eyes at the ceiling. “These curtains are perfectly good. I can’t see a thing wrong with them.”

“They’re not –”

“No, Rita. I’m sorry but this is ridiculous. You don’t need new curtains, new carpets, new anything. We can’t afford to buy new crockery every time someone smashes a saucer. We can’t –”

“Oh all right!” Dorita stamped her foot. “I know – just because you don’t like me having nice things. You’re like all men. You don’t care what the house looks like. I need a new evening dress too, Lindley, I hope you won’t –”

“NO!” bellowed her husband. The windows rattled. Dorita looked sulky.

“Oh, all right,” she repeated and turned away moodily. Lindley made a peculiar growling sound and stalked out. But the new economies were put into effect immediately – despite the fact that Juliet was growing like Jack’s beanstalk she was not provided with new school uniform, and her legs showed it. Despite all Dorita’s pleading and nagging he refused to elucidate the reason for the new system.

But it was not until Juliet was nearly fourteen that the situation exploded. The tension had been mounting almost imperceptibly for years, in the ways that I have described, and in the last year or so it had increased in leaps and bounds, beginning with the monetary changes and continuing in the constant friction between Lindley and Dorita and their concerted dislike of their daughter. Somehow Juliet’s being at school had not improved her relations with Captain and Mrs. Carrick. They had been annoyed at how she had settled down, and how Blanche allowed her to entertain her friends at the Mertons’ bungalow and most of all how since she had been with other children she had been far less inclined to be the meek, spiritless child her parents wished her to be. She often disobeyed them if she felt that an order was unreasonable, and although Blanche never directly encouraged her in this, neither did she – usually – discourage her. As she said to Ralph, the poor child must do something for herself or she would end up a feeble, downtrodden thing.

But I digress. For Juliet there were few signs of anything wrong, at first. She was accustomed to the emotional uproars in the household and did not notice specially that they seemed to be becoming more frequent. She did notice that her father and mother seemed to be continually “harping on” (as she put it) about everything that she did – and especially those things that she wanted to do.

One Thursday she arrived home from school to hear her parents talking together seriously and quietly. For a few moments Juliet stood in the hall and listened carefully. No, there was no aggression in either of the tones, although her mother sounded sharp and disagreeable, as she generally did. To say that Juliet was mystified would be an understatement. She was agog with curiosity to know what was going on. Hurriedly she dumped her bag in her bare little bedroom, then crept down the hall, hoping to surprise her parents into giving something away. She thought they must be discussing herself, since they rarely concurred on anything else.

Juliet laid her hand on the doorhandle, very slowly twisted it, then suddenly flung the door open and entered the room. Her parents looked up.

“Ah, Juliet!” said her father.

I've written and teensy-weensy bit more, and here it is.....

“Ah, Juliet!” said her father. Juliet tilted her chin slightly, expecting them to chide her for something she had done or not done. It came as a surprise, then, when he cleared his throat and made an attempt to smile pleasantly at her. It was not a noticeably successful attempt, I must admit, but Juliet appreciated the spirit in which it was offered.

“Yes, father?” she questioned, but not as though she really wanted to know, since that would be the best way of dissuading the confidence. Captain and Mrs. Carrick glanced at one another. Lindley cleared his throat again, rather violently.

“Ahem! Ah – Juliet. We thought you ought to know that you have been entered as a boarder with Miss Sniggins, ah – beginning from the ah – commencement of the next term.” He finished and scowled at her heavily, as though she were responsible for his discomfort.

“You may go now,” added Dorita sourly, and Juliet, disdaining to make any comment, turned and left the room in silence.

Once outside, however, she ran to her room and flung herself on the bed, burying her face in the pillow to mute the whoops of delight that rose to her lips. Having composed herself somewhat she rose again and performed a short and gleeful dance, then seated herself on the bed to ruminate on this state of affairs. She could see no reason for her parents sudden decision – they could not know that to be a boarder was the one thing she had most desired, or they would certainly not have taken the step. Neither did it seem likely that they had done it purely as a means of hurting her, they would not have thought about it that much. The only solution that Juliet could see to the problem was that they desired to get her out of the house. Well, she had no objection to being got out of the house, indeed she was in one accord with her mother and father upon this particular subject.

It was with little interest that she noted later that day that her parents appeared for once to be on good terms with one another. She concluded that they were mutually congratulating one another on their genius plan in banishing their daughter by legitimate means. The knowledge did not hurt her. She was too young to think deeply about it and was only pleased that she would now be permenantly in the company of her friends.

Hey, did I get the impression you wanted more?  ::)

There is no need to linger on the events that precede Juliet’s new career as a boarder at school. Suffice it to say that she became deeply suspicious of her parents’ attempts to behave amiably towards her. Remembering, afterwards, she concluded that it must have been some feeling of remorse that prompted this new approach, although, she thought bitterly, you wouldn’t have thought so. However, as I said, I shall not delay, but proceed immediately to Juliet’s advent as a boarder. At first she revelled in the experience of boarding school life with the most intense enjoyment. The fact that letters either to or from Blanche were forbidden – and Miss Sniggins was aware of this and would certainly not allow such a thing – did little to curb her happiness, although it was an irritation. In every other way her life was one of pure, unadulterated bliss. Her parents did not write to her.

Juliet’s friends were delighted to have her as a boarder, and she very quickly settled down into the school routine. After a week she was quite at home and felt far more as though it should be that, rather than her own home. The hot season was just commencing.

It was about five weeks into the term when the thing happened. Juliet and her friends were enjoying the brief mid-morning break when there came a knock on the door of the common room. A small junior put her head round it.

“Miss Sniggins wants Juliet Carrick in her study, please,” she announced. Juliet turned, her mind instantly trying to account for the summons.

“Did she say what she wanted?” she enquired, needlessly, for the girl shook her head emphatically.

“Not likely! But she looked frightfully angry. What have you been doing?” Juliet frowned slightly.

“Nothing. I don’t know what she wants.” They reached the door of the study and Juliet tapped on the door, while the junior scuttled away as quickly as she could. The command came, and she entered, closing the door behind her. Miss Sniggins was sitting at her desk. She was a tall woman, blue-eyed with pince-nez glasses. She generally wore old-fashioned styles, and her grey hair was swept up into a tight bun. She was a rather awe-inspiring figure, looking elegant and yet severe. Juliet, however, was too accustomed to harsh treatment to be discomposed by strict discipline. But even so, she was a little alarmed at the wrath in the Headmistress’ face. Miss Sniggins looked at her.

“Juliet!” she began, and ire vibrated in her voice. Juliet wondered with some apprehension what it was she was supposed to have done, but she only said,

“Yes, Miss Sniggins?”

“I have just received a communication from your parents. I – can you tell me where they are at the moment, please?” Juliet’s dark eyes widened. This was certainly not what she had expected.

“At home, I suppose, Miss Sniggins,” she replied. Miss Sniggins’ lips narrowed and her hard blue eyes flickered ominously.

“Juliet, your parents are not at home. Read this, if you please.” Juliet took the sheet and read it. As she did so her stomach seemed to tie itself into a knot. For one horrible moment she actually thought she was going to be sick.

If she knew she didn't care  ;D

“Dear Miss Sniggins, (read the letter)

I fear you will be surprised, even angry, at what I have to say to you. You may say and think very harsh things of me. However, that will not affect me, for I am writing to explain that I am leaving my daughter, Juliet, with you. I am obliged to absent myself from India for quite some time, taking my wife with me, and a rebellious, disobedient schoolgirl will only hinder our activities. It will be of no use to you to pursue us. Neither do we have any relatives living, so it is hopeless for you to search for them.

You have been paid a term’s fees for Juliet, but unfortunately I have very little money and so am unable to make any further contribution to her welfare. I am sure you will find a way to repay yourself – perhaps by permitting her to help look after the younger children. I may find sometime in the future that I am able once more to support her. If this proves to be the case I will send for her – until that time, she is your concern and responsibility. Of course, there will be nothing to stop you from sending her to an institution of some sort, but I am sure that you will benefit more in the long run if you keep her and make her useful to you.

In conclusion, I must apologise for any inconvenience I may be causing you, and repeat that any attempt to find us will be unavailing, so you may as well spare yourself the effort.

Au revoir!

Lindley F. C. Carrick

Just realised I forgot to post the last bit for tonight...  ::)

Juliet stared at this epistle as though to look at it long enough might bring her parents back to her. It was as though the bottom had dropped out of her world, and she was falling swiftly into a thousand pits. As she returned the letter to the Headmistress her hands trembled a little. Miss Sniggins’ eyes seemed to pierce into her very heart, as she ruthlessly questioned the child.

“Did you have any idea of this?” Juliet looked very small and lost as she stood there before the Head, but voice did not falter as she replied briefly,

“No, I didn’t.” Miss Sniggins looked like she did not know whether to believe her pupil or not, but there was little she could do about it.

“Do you realise what this means for me, you insolent child?” she almost spat, ignoring the fact that Juliet had not been in the least rude. The girl said nothing. “It means that for every moment I keep you here I shall be losing money. You will be my ruin!” Juliet’s eyes grew bigger and bigger in her white face as she gazed at the Head, mouth slightly open and a stunned expression on her face. At that moment she was literally incapable of speech. Miss Sniggins suddenly realised to whom she was speaking, and rose from her chair, indicating the door. “You may return to your common-room. But rest assured, I shall find your parents, and when I do, they will take you away from here and – never – return.” The last words were spoken with frightening emphasis, and Juliet made haste to remove herself from the study.

As she went down the corridor her numbed mind slowly began to work again. Could it really be true? It must be. Her father would never have written such a letter otherwise. Then – why? The question burned in her brain. She knew that Captain Carrick regarded himself (even if other people held different views) as a thorough English gentleman. Had it been at all possible he would have at least paid Juliet’s fees for the time she was at school. Therefore it must not be possible. But why flee India, leaving her there? Not that they would have any compunction about abandoning her, but it surely would attract more attention to their departure, if they wished that to be secret. The problem was too big for Juliet. She could not understand it. What she did understand was that they had callously abandoned her – left her here, at the mercy of Miss Sniggins. That knowledge gave her a pain that was almost physical, somwhere in her chest. She had known, of course, that their feeling towards her were hardly affectionate, but to be able to simply leave your own child like that…

As she entered the common room her friends glanced up from their occupations. On seeing her expression one or two of them jumped up.

“Juliet! What’s happened? What did the Snig want?” questioned one Mavis Callum eagerly. Juliet looked at her with eyes that hardly saw.

“What’s up, Julie?” anxiously asked Dorothea Dudgeon. “Was she very beastly?” Juliet swallowed hard and pulled herself together with an effort.

“No – at least, yes, she was rather. I mean –” she came to a stop. How could she tell these girls, these girls who had happy homes and loving parents, what hers had done to her? “I’d rather not talk about it, if you don’t mind.” The eyes of the other two met for a moment and they began talking of other things. But Juliet sat between them, hardly speaking, just gazing out of the window, her mind far away. Her lessons that day were done as badly as it possible to do lessons, and it ended in her bursting into tears during History. She was something of a favourite with the History mistress (despite her lack of interest in the subject), who promptly sent for Matron, who swept the child off to bed in short order once she had managed to stem the flow of tears.

After that one outburst Juliet regained control of herself, and went about for the next few days with a colourless face and a distracted mind. Her earlier life had taught her to conceal her feelings effectively, but she was only fourteen and she was under a very great strain. She was aware that Miss Sniggins was making endeavouring to tracce her parents and she devoutly hoped that she would succeed.

It was only three days later when she was once again summoned to the office. Here the Headmistress informed her curtly that Captain and Mrs. Carrick had been discovered and would be at the school the next day.

I think it totally wrong for Miss Sniggins to take that attitude to Juliet, poor girl.  I know she is justifiably angry - I would be - but to continue to be like that to Juliet when it must have been patently obvious that she knew nothing, was awful.  Mind you, it makes her reaction when the same thing happened again, very understandable.

WELL! While my feelings toward Juliet's parents are unprintable, I think that the Headmistress' response is far worse - there is no justification for treating a totally innocent child in that way. It makes the later scene with Madge so understandable - and Juliet's complete change in behaviour.

Sincerely hope that Miss Sniggins' school fails and she suffers from bilateral renal colic - one of the closest pains to childbirth!

Perhaps there is a parallel universe somewhere where the CS is real.  Then we'd be the fictons (term nicked from Robert Heinlein who proposed that when you write a story, you create a new universe which continues independently).

Jemima the Rat came from a pet shop with assurances as to her virtue.  Unfortunately it turned out that in the few short weeks that she'd lived with ratty siblings, she'd managed to get pregnant - she gave birth in my friend's room to eleven rat kittens!  8oo

Hmm, we didn't cook the rats.

I have, however, cooked cockroaches.  The first time I used my oven in Moscow - making delicious, traditional English apple crumble for my Russian friends - several cockroaches plummeted to their deaths in the pudding  ;D

Later I learnt to heat the oven for several minutes before starting cooking, to flush the cockroaches out in advance  8oo

Yes, I did!   The cockroaches didn't go silently - there was lots of scurrying and scrabbling and several "kerr-plunks!" as little beasties fell to the bottom of the oven (not all went into the crumble...)

Ew, again!

I think more story would be an excellent way of killing this rather distasteful yibbling.

If you want cockroaches, try living in Cyprus. Get up in the morning, make tea, kill the cockroaches..............
