The romantic bit - Jack returns. (alturnative ending)

Joey heard a violent fantasia from a car horn outside. Knowing it must be Jem she leapt from her seat on the bedside and dashed downstairs as fast as she could. She could see that Jem had an impatient look on his face but there was something else, was it happiness, or possibly smug secrecy. Jo didn't care. She threw herself into the seat and greeted her brother in law. "Jem stop dilly dallying, we need to get back at once, its Jack." Jem stared in amazement,
"How the devil did you know, we've been keeping it a secret from everyone.
At the same time Jo had carried on and was explaining about the letter and the ring. "So come on I want to be wearing it as soon as possible." she finished. Jem sighed with relief, she hadn't twigged onto his comment and had presumed he had been talking about Jacks belongings. Jem hastily told Jo he had to make an emergency phone call to the san about a patient he was expecting that day and dashed into the main school office to make an entirely different call. His news caused great joy at the other end and he ambled back to the car giving his mystery guest time to sort a few things out. Then, because he could be tricky and liked to wind Joey up he started asking about the term, the staff and her non existent luggage. Finally Jo snapped. "For goodness sake, stop yattering on like an old woman at a coffee morning and take me home." Jem looked put out for the moment but, because this delaying was cutting off his own nose so to speak, he chortled and set off down the drive. He couldn't wait to see the excitement when they got to the round house.

As they pulled up Madge was watching impatiently from the doorway. "Where on earth have you two been? I've been waiting for ever." Jo looked at Madge and wondered what had got her into such a flap.
"We would have been here much earlier if Jem wasn't such an old granny," Joey retorted trying to look dignified but spoiling the effect by putting her tongue out at Jem. Madge ignored Jo and whispered something to Jem. Jem shook his head in answer and Madge turned to Jo.
"Jo, I wonder, would you mind dreadfully going into the salon and waiting for us there? I need to give Jem a couple of phone messages but we'll be in in a few minutes for coffee."
"If I must," Jo replied. "But hurry up Jem, I shan't have a moments peace until that ring is on my finger."
Jo made her way to the specified room. If she had glanced back at the older pair she would have seen them following her into the house behaving like a couple of children who have a big surprise. Jo entered the room and sat on the sofa, not really taking any notice of the surroundings. She was deep in thought when a familiar voice interrupted her.
"I'm afraid that Jem is no longer in a position to give you that ring, but if you still want it I might be able to help." The voice shook slightly with pent up emotion.
"Jack!" Jo gasped, spun around and through herself at the man in the wheelchair next to her. "Jack is it really you? But how, when, oh there's so much I want to know. I suppose the most important thing is, do you still want to marry a silly girl who couldn't see a good thing when it was right in front of her.?"
Jo's emotions went through the whole spectrum, joy, astonishment, guilt, denial. But she had to believe the evidence of her eyes and finally just stood staring at Jack not believing he was real.
Jack held tightly onto her hand and gently pushed her onto the sofa. He sat in his chair next to her and began to speak tentatively. "Can you need to ask Jo? of course I still want you. The question is after you hear what I have to say to you will you still want to marry me?

*Ali shuffles away from the edge of the cliff hoping that the others notice it in time. She would hate for them to be injured and miss the next installment.*

Hurrah! Great episode.

No, now we've got our sofa and food and drink, we'll just camp out on your cliff edge waiting to hear what Jack has to say, and every now and then we'll make polite requests for more.

ETA However fast I am, Vikki is quicker.  Vikki stop that, you could hurt yourself, come and sit on the sofa!

*grumbles about the fact that Ali could write the other scene without cliffs, but had to use them here*

And this:

Quote:
Ahh, so he's a Tasmanian doctor!

refers to interstate rivalry. Tasmanians, you see, have two heads. *thought everyone knew that*

I would have that thought news was important enough to make the British papers, myself. Just like what they do to sheep in New Zealand... *finds a good hiding place*

Well, what a fuss. Can't a girl spend quality time with her husband and daughter without fear of death or worse! I didn't know I was being timed for response.

Outside the door Madge and Jem waited desperately to hear the events that were transpiring within, but to no avail. A hush had descended on the room the two were looking at each other, neither brave enough to continue the conversation after Jacks cryptic remark. Jo wandered over to the window wondering what the dreadful thing could be, for it must indeed be dreadful if Jack thought it would change her mind about wanting to marry him. Jack stared at Joeys back, the longer he waited, the longer he could believe they were engaged so he said nothing.
"For goodness sake Jem," Madge muttered. "Go in there and make them talk, this is ridiculous." A look of frustraion crossed Madges face. She knew that once Jo's mind was made up about such an important matter it would stay made up, so why didn't Jack just get on with it. And as for Jo, this must be the first time she'd managed to be patient, usually she wanted to know everything before it happened. Jem pulled her away from the door and into his study.
"It's none of our buisness," he replied as he opened the safe and reached in, removing a small metal tin. "They'll sort it out in their own time. Maybe you should see Marie about tea." He fished inside the tin and brought out a simple gold ring with a beautifully cut diamond sparkling in the morning sunshine. "Might as well get this out ready though. I don't know what Jack has to say but I do know Joey and this ring will be needed before long."
"You did say Jack would be able to return to work at the san as soon as he was ready, didn't you?" Madge queried.
"Of course, even being in the wheel chair permenantly doesn't change his ability and knowledge, we need him just as much as ever and I made that very clear to him"
"So it can't be that then, and surely he knows that the whelchair won't make one bit of difference to Jo either so that can't be it. I'm at a loss to know what the problem could be." With a sigh Madge put the ring, which she had been admiring whilst she had been talking, onto Jems desk and left the office for a conference Marie about meals for the day. The Robin would be here soon, she had taken the twins to Frieda's for the holidays and would be a great help with the children so Marie and Anna could spend the afternoon doing the best with the rations they had and the fresh produce from the garden and the chickens to produce an engagement supper, or if the worst happened, a good bye supper, for she knew that if Jo did reject Jack after hearing his news, he would refuse to stay at their house. It would be too uncomfortable for everyone.
