Title: Joey - still young, free and single.
Post by ali on Dec 21st, 2003, 9:16pm
Sorry its taken me so long to restart but I was so upset by the arrival of the monster that I had to take some of Mateys tonic, which in hindsight I realise was a bit of a mistake. Still the school hols are here so I may have time to catch up.
As a first time drabble, I of course did not understand the importance of saving the story so part two is lost forever. This is a brief summary of the missing bits before I carry on.

After Madges matchmaking party Jo realised it was time to stop behaving like a spoilt brat. She first made it up to Madge and Jem by making them breakfast in bed, and made Jem rather sick in the process by using salt instead of sugar in the coffee. Still, all was forgiven.

Back at school she made up with Helen Robinson through her way with words. Mary and Gillians surprise had arrived so Gillian and Helen took Jo to Jo's own room where she found ....

A small baby. Jo was terribly worried that the baby had been left to her to bring up by a deceased friend and being rather bad with children despite her many nephews and nieces she hoped she wouldn't have to adopt it.

Luckily Tessas mum Simone was returning from the bathroom and put Jo out of her misery. They had a heart to heart and Simones quiet faith helped Jo to put her mistakes behind her. Jo revealed that the return of the Linders sisters and hearing their story had made her realise that she was wrong. Simone hoped they would do as much for Maria Marani who she had brought with her. (They did!)

Jack in the meantime was on his ship in the middle of some ocean . Receiving a letter from Jo he realised he would have to tell her of his undieing love and wrote back.

Jo and Matey met in the corridor. Jo had been rather pleased with herself for coming up with the idea that the school should speak a different language each day of the week. During their chat she came up with another stonking idea - staff order marks. Matey revealed that she had left Jo's letters in her room so Jo skipped off to read them.

Of the three letters that had arrived she read Evvy's first. As she was about to start Jacks letter she got an emergency phonecall from Madge and dashed off to take it.

It turned out to be good news. Elisaveta had arrived safely and Jo went home to hear all about the escape. Meanwhile Jacks letter had been flung hastily down when Jo had dashed out of the room and had slipped behind her bureau. It was forgotten and Jack waited in vain to hear Jos response.

Well thats about it. Now I can continue from this point in the story.

With a miserable face Jack Maynard peered through the rain that was hurling down onto the ships decks. He just couldn't understand why Jo hadn't replied to his letter. He knew how long the post took but even so it should have arrived by now. Even if Joey hadn't returned his feelings she would have returned his letter, she wasn't that cruel. Maybe something was wrong with her, she took ill so easily, or maybe she hadn't even received the letter, it could easily have been lost.

Feeling a little better after deciding that must be what had happened, he set off across the deck to write the thing again.
Before he could get inside out of the rain he heard the emergency siren sounding. Looking hastily around he saw a member of the crew laying on the deck, one leg crushed under a heavy piece of equipment which had fallen in the gale. With no thought of his own danger he hurried forward to do his job. He quickly assessed the damage and when the other crew members arrived he got them to carefully move the weight and carry the man down to medical quarters where Jack would do what he could to relieve the pain. He was afraid though that there would be little he could do to save the badly damaged leg. With a prayer for his shipmate he looked down at the angry surging waters beneath the boat. How could any man cope with such a disability, unable to provide for himself or his family, knowing that he himself would crumble in such a situation. As he set off to do the best he could for the man, a particularly fierce wave crashed onto the deck. The other crew members looked on helplessley as Jack disappeared under the wave and into the cruel ocean. The last thought on his mind was for Joey, hoping that she hadn't received his letter, that she would never realise the extent of her loss. Not just that of a dear friend but of her soulmate.

Will Joey realise she loves him when she hears that he's drowned?  Of course, she won't get the telegram, though, will she?

Hmm, so we are during HT.
The telegram will go to the New Forrest won't it?

What is going to happen to Joey to make her see that she needs Jack?

Waiting in anticipation...

Surely depends  if Jack is still going to be rescued - if he really does drown it would be better if Joey never found the letter surely?
How bad would she feel if she thought that Jack had drowned thinking she couldn't even be bothered to reply to him?

Thanks for putting this back and for explaining the circumstances of that accident.

So many good ideas, maybe you should all take over from here! Here's my own thoughts on it, hope they don't disappoint too much.
                      *********************************

The austere building of the san had many rooms, which was fortunate considering the increasing number of patients being admitted. Since the start of the war the hospital had had to branch out considerably as the government had felt it a safe environment to ship its wounded soldiers to. This had led to staffing problems for Jem, many young doctors were involved in the war and therefore unavailable to him. He knew he wouldn't be able to take any more patients without extra staff. Fortunately a cunning plan had occured to him and he felt that because the government needed his establishment that they would be willing to fall in with his ideas.

He sealed the envelope in front of him and smiled to himself. For once, he had written the letter contained himself. He wanted no errors and needed to be sure that it was kept a secret until he got the reply. The letter was requesting the release of his closest friend from his duties in the navy to take up his old post at the san. Jem wouldn't have done this for anyone else but to him Jack Maynard was like a younger brother.

Ever since they had first met and worked side by side to build up the san into the success it was today, a strong link had been shared by them. They had the same opinions and beliefs on many subjects and they had shared their ideas and hopes with each other, something Jem had not done before, or since, with a male companion. Jack had spent all of his time with the Russels since his sister had emigrated to the other side of the world. His only other relatives in England had recently been killed by a stray bomb which had also destroyed Pretty Maids, their house. The German plane involved had been blown seriously off course and then got into difficulties, so dropping the bomb had been the pilots attempt to lighten his load. Jem had been honoured when Jack had asked permission to name him as next of kin following the disaster and missed the support and enthusiasm Jack always showed for his Job. Now they would have him back. He would have to stay in the doctors accomodation this time because Jem had high hopes for Jacks relationship with Joey. He had seen the look in Jacks eyed when he had thought no one was paying him any attention and  was going to do everything he could to help the relationship along. Obviously the two could not be seen sharing accomadation whilst unmarried, there should be no scandals attached to his family.

Jem was interrupted from his musings by a knock at the door which , when opened, admitted Matron with a telegram. He took the letter without any worries entering his mind, he was always receiving information about new patients in this way then he casually opened it. He saw the admiralty had sent it, it was unusual to get sailors at the san. Quickly scanning the telegraph his face fell and he dropped the piece of paper onto his desk where it landed forlornly on top of that other letter. There was no need to send it now. Jack would never be coming back. He picked it up and read it again in case he had been mistaken.

As next of kin to officer Jack Maynard we regret to inform that he has been lost at sea, presumed dead....

Jems eyes glazed over and he sat, grey and empty saying a pray for the soul of his departed friend.

                ******************************************

Before you ask, no, Jack will not by some strange coincidence turn up as a patient at the san unknown to the others.

On leaving his office Jem put on his most British stiff upper lip. He kept his news to himself, deciding that Madge, Joey and Jacks sister Mollie should know before the staff got to hear the distressing news. He also knew that he wasn't ready to hear the grief of others, for Jack had been a great favourite with all of the staff, and they would be very upset. He carried on with his rounds as if nothing had happened, but straight after he feigned illness and went home to be with his beloved Madge, to whom he could unburden his feelings. She too was naturally upset, she'd known Jack as long as Jem and loved him, his playful personality which had been underscored by a deep faith and a need to help others. She was by Jems side when he put through the call to Mollie, it took time, but as Jack had said when Jem had thought she should remain his next of kin, she would find out sooner and in a more gentle way. Thinking of others again he had not wanted Mollie to be the one to receive the telegram should it have happened.

They decided to wait until Jo came home for the weekend before telling her. It wouldn't do any good to disturb her at work and although they were good friends, it was no more than that. Plus this way she would have a couple of days to get used to the idea before having to face the others.

Joey was waiting impatiently for Flora and Fiona who were accompanying her home for the weekend. Madge had promised them that they would be able to speak with Shiena on the phone about their chart after the difficulties of the past week. "Come on twins" she called, "do you mean to come home this evening or would you rather stay here with Matey." The twins let out a horrified shriek and sped up. Miss Bettany was so mean to refer to their rather unpleasant predicament even if it was thanks to her that they had avoided spending the rest of their lives in Mateys room. But they couldn't have told her why they had been absent from class. The Highland twins took their role as chart keepers very seriously and they had only told Mistress Bettany because they knew Shiena trusted her and her sister. Jo grinned, she knew just what was going on in their minds, she had found the whole incident tremendously exciting - a spy trying to rob the school and sending threatening letters. She would get a great story out of the chart of Erisay and its adventures after the war.

As they walked up the drive of the Round House after the bus ride home, Madge and Jem came out to meet them. Jo knew immediately that something must be wrong, she came home every weekend and this was the first time they had behaved in this way.
"Robin," said Madge with a strained voice. "Could you take the twins inside to change, we need a private word with Joey."
As soon as the three younger girls had disappeared Joey began her questioning. "What is it? What has happened? Quick, tell me."
"Come into Jems study and sit down," Madge replied ushering Jo inside. Jem looked at Madge who looked back, they had decided that he should tell Jo but now the time had arrived he was finding it difficult to put into words.
"Well Jo, it's like this, I have received a telegram from the admiralty." He stopped, unsure of where to go next. Jo was looking at him blankly, not having the slightest idea of what he was trying to say.
"Jo my dear," Madge took over seeing that Jem was struggling. "I'm afraid we've had bad news about Jack. The worst news in fact. I know you were close, very good friends and we wanted to tell you in person." Jo still looked uncomprehending.
"I don't understand, what could be so bad that you couldn't phone the school?" Then it dawned on her what they were trying to tell her. She sat silently, her eyes were bright and shiny from the tears gathering. "Could you leave me for a while please." She finally managed to say. The other two glanced at each other and, realising that Jo needed some time, quietly went out.

Jo sat without moving, but inside she was in a turmoil. She would never see Jack again. Jack who had helped her out of many sticky situation. Jack who had both entertained and, when needed, consoled. Jack who had been a constant in her life for many years. What was it she had said a few weeks ago, he was like an older brother to her. Well she now knew she had been kidding herself. In that brief time she finally grew up, she had loved Jack but had been unwilling to admit to such adult feelings. And now it was too late, he would never know, they could have had so much together. If she hadn't denied her feelings for so long they could have been married, perhaps even have started a family. She stopped that line of thinking, it would do no good, and anyway she didn't think Jack would have returned the feelings, he thought of her as a mischevious school girl to be helped out of trouble at regular intervals. But try as she could she couldn't help imagining their life together, picturing what they had lost.

When Madge returned after an hour Jo was still sat in the same position. The unshed tears still sparkled in her eyes. Madge looked at her and knew instantly what was going on in Joeys head, they had been friends as well as sisters for too long for Jo to be able to hide it. A silent hand was placed on her shoulders conveying the love and grief that Madge felt and the support that was there for Jo when she needed it. At last Jo gave way. A loud sob wracked her body and she cried as she had never done before. It took some time for her to calm down. Madge had been prepared to go to Jem for a sleeping draught, but as suddenly as it had started, the crying stopped.

"Thank you Madge," was all Joey said. Then she stood up, shook herself. "I have been a privileged woman to have known Jack Maynard and I will carry on in the way I know he would want me to." With that she left the room. It was a quiet weekend. Jo kept very much to herself and when Monday morning came around it was a very different person who arrived at the Chalet School.

That was brilliantly handled Ali, but now we've seen the reactions to Jack's death, he can be rescued, can't he?  Please?

Possibly,  if Jo had never married she would have carried on living with Madge and Jem, and maybe Jem would have headed the San in Switzerland so Jo would still have been able to play a full part in the school.
Obviously she wouldn't have had children of her own but no doubt the Russell girls would have been featured more prominently, so maybe it wouldn't have been that different.

              *******************************************

The girls walked silently into the hall wondering about the reason for the summons during lesson time. The last time that had happened it had resulted in several girls disappearing to hunt for spies who turned out to be poachers. As the elder girls loooked around they discovered that the situation was very similar. Miss Annersley's face displayed the same grim frown. Colonel Black stood beside her, a self important look on his face. Behind him stood two police officers escorting a strange man, this was different, what could it mean?

As the forms continued to file in Miss Annersley used the time to decide how to approach this new problem with the girls. If the Colonel was correct and one of her girls was a traitor, then unless she had a very good reason she would have to instigate the severest of punishments. She sighed to herself, Madame, the staff and herself would do almost anything to prevent an expulsion, it felt as though they had failed a girl if they let her go. Looking on the bright side she noticed that Jo, for the first time in weeks was sitting up and taking notice. If this could bring her snap back, which had been sadly missing since Jacks death, then there were some positives. She meant to involve Jo at all levels of this problem, no one could get under a girls skin like her and she had ingenious method of dealing with trouble.

Jo was scanning the ranks of the rapidly filling hall, hoping for a clue as to the perpetrator of this deed. In her mind there was only one real candidate, a girl who had never really understood the values of the chalet school, and unfortuately a girl who they had given up trying with. Perhaps they were to blame really for giving up on her long ago and just doing enough to stop her causing any real problems within the school. Well if she got a say in it they wouldn't fail her again, there must be some way they could get through to her, but perhaps that way would be to show her just how they viewed such behaviour by expelling her.

Betty Wynne Davis sat at the back of the hall with the other sixths, a pale look on her face. She had recognised the short man with the police officers and knew how much trouble she was going to be in. Maybe, if she crouched low enough she would be over looked. Then she straightened her back. Not this time, this time she show them that she wasn't the old Betty what ever they thought. She had regretted her behaviour at the school for some time now but it was a case of give a dog a bad name. She had been too proud to go to Elizabeth to ask for help even though she knew it would have been given instantly. Elizabeth had never forgotten her old friend and had tried many times to make up always to be rebuffed. The conversation between Miss Bettany and Madam de Bersac that she had overheard in the library had strengthened her resolve to change. Miss Bettany had been so strong, insisting that she was going to change and be the woman Dr Maynard would have wanted her to be. Betty knew she too needed to show her change, not just keep it hidden and had tried. But the good behaviour, better grades and pleasant comments had gone more or less unnoticed by the others.

Regardless of the fact that the last classes were just entering Betty stood up and walked slowly out to the dias where Miss Annersley stood, her face getting grimmer as Betty approached. "Beatrice, this is no time for your silly games, go and sit down with the others at once." Miss Annersley snapped and Betty almost did as she was told. Then with a wavering voice she quietly answered.
"You can send the others away. Its me you want, I did it and I'm sorry.

ALI!!! It's been AGES since the last bit of story! Please post some more soon - I can't bear to go back to my French coursework just yet... Feel very sorry for Betty if no one noticed the change in her behaviour etc - I'm sure the staff all saw it in Elizabeth pretty early on.

Hello, I'm back from the land with no computers. I have my bucks fizz by my side and new year approaches.

                        ********************************

With a brief whisper to Miss Wilson, Miss Annersley stood in the middle of the platform and surveyed the girls with a serious look. Once the Colonel and his party had been escorted off by Miss Wilson with assurances that justice would be done and Betty had been taken to her office accompanied by Jo, she spoke. "Girls," she said in her beautiful clear tones. "I'm afraid that the summons to the hall has been a mistake, I only require upper second to stay. The rest of you may go and change into your outside clothing as you are going for long walks with your form teachers and the prefects." Both pupils and teachers looked confused at this but started to lead out of the room. Miss Annersley quickly asked Miss Dene to organise the prefects and she immediately got onto it.

The remaining form looked at each other nervously wondering what on earth was going on. A select crew, namely the MacDonald twins and their friends looked glum, they had put two and two together and for once come up with the right answer. "All those who know of the chart of Erisay stand please." The girls rose immediately. "Thank you, are you sure that is everyone Fiona," Miss Annersley looked at the silent girl who could only nod in reply. "In that case the rest of you may leave, go to your common room and wait for a member of staff to come to you." They filed out giving astonished looks at those left behind.

For the next ten minutes Miss Annersley gave a lecture she had never bettered, and all the girls were weeping at the thought that they could have put not only themselves and their loved ones in danger, but also the whole country and their allies. Miss Annersley knew these were strong words for girls of their age but felt it was nesseccary to impress the true extent of the damage that gossip could do. She finished with a point that really hit home. "When you reach the age, how many of you intended to sign the peace league?" It was asked quietly, with real interest. The girls eyes shone, the league was, at this time the heart of the chalet school. All knew of it, all repeated the prayer that Jo had written each day, and all would sign on the day they were of age. As they all eagerly nodded Miss Annersley sighed. "Well girls, at the present time I don't know that it will be permitted for you to join our league, you must carefully consider your behaviour and show us that it is safe for us to include you." She nodded to them to leave and swept out of the room knowing they would need time and space to stop howling and come to terms with her punishment, for punishment it was, the worst that she could imagine.

Now to deal with Betty, she hoped that Jo had got her to open up and was prepared to stand by her. The confession had taken a great deal of guts and showed that there was hope for Betty. None of the girls knew about it, so she may be able to stay here. Hilda decided to call a full staff meeting that night and lay the facts before them, together they would decide what was best for Betty and the school.

                          *********************************

Thanks for wanting more, I've never done anything like this before and you have really given me confidence in myself. I know I'm a few minutes early, but happy new year, I hope you all have many ups and few downs, and continue to support each other through the CBB.

The staff congregated in the staffroom and provided themselves with coffee and biscuits. They were armed with mark books and conduct charts as requested but had no idea about the reason for this emergency meeting. The prefects were on duty so they had plenty of time and ambled into the work area where the tables had been pulled together. Miss Annersley was already seated, as was Matron and soon all were ready to begin.

"The reason for this meeting is to discuss Beatrice Wynne Davis" Miss Annersley announced. Several groans and headshakes were noted and on the whole the staff looked glum. "Please look at your mark books and give me a summary of her recent performance."
"Well, there's not much point me checking," Pam Slater announced. "Betty hates my subject and never makes an effort." Most of the others nodded.
"She's pretty good at my lessons if she tries, but she can never be bothered, her scores are always in the bottom half of the form." added Mary Burnett.
"Is Betty the slight pretty girl in the sixth, I haven't had many dealings with her, but she's never been a problem and her work is fine for me," Helen spoke shyly, aware of an atmosphere in the room but ready to stand up for a pupil she had quite liked. The rest stopped and stared open mouthed. They had all known Betty for years and were well aware of her failings.
Hilda felt pleased at the way things were progressing but didn't show it in her looks."All of you who teach Betty check her marks whether you already know them or not." The sound of pages being turned become surprised noises as one after another Betty's mistresses realised that her grades had been steadily improving but they had failed to notice. One after another they announced their news with apologies to the head for not realising. "Now the conduct charts please." This time the staff knew that the charts would be full, after all Betty was rude, broke rules day in and day out and wasn't bothered about fines or order marks. This time they checked without comment and again were surprised to find that over the last half term they hadn't given Betty any marks at all. The room was silent.
"I suppose it's true that a bad reputation lasts," said Joey eventually. "We all expect her to be poor at work and attitude so don't even notice when she changes, she's been trying hard for weeks and hasn't had a single piece of recognition or praise. Well I for one are ashamed of myself."
"Wait a minute," Pam interrupted. "I admit it was lax of us not to notice a change so big in a pupil but it has been going on so long now that most of us feel we are just riding it out till the end of the year when she leaves. I ignore her whenever possible, she riles me so with her blatant disregard for me."
"Pam's right in many ways," continued Gillian. "As is Joey. If you hadn't asked us I'm sure we'd never have noticed. But why the sudden interest in her?"
Hilda made a decision, the staff didn't need to know what had happened, just enough to stop them questioning the need for their inclusion here. "Joey had a long chat with Betty today who broke down, she explained how hard she was trying and what a struggle it was. She also revealed the sad details of her home life. She has had many scrapes in this school and failed to grow up, after hearing her tale about life with Mr Irons I can understand why. Several times it has been considered that she should be permanently excluded but with have always avoided it. However I now think that in Bettys best interests to part from us. I am going to make arrangements with her other guardian for her to leave us at christmas. If the staff feel this way about her then she has no chance with the children. She won't know that I have had anything to do with it. Mrs Graves has been away for some time so I will ask her to tell Betty that she wants them to be together for a time before Betty has to join up. Betty will be with us until christmas, there will be no shame in her departure. Please try to encourage her and put aside your feelings for her until then. This could be the chance she needs and I mean her to leave her remembering our ideals and trying to live up to them in the real world."

Slowly Hilda stood up, pleased at the decision she had made. The staff agreed to do their bit and Jo made a decision to talk to the Robin and Elizabeth about including Betty subtly in their activities. By the end of term Betty would be as close to a real chalet girl as it was possible to be.

So because of Joey, Betty was able to leave with her reputation intact - excellent Ali, although I must admit I'm disappointed that the rest of the staff hadn't even noticed her improvement.

Jo sat staring out of her window awaiting the arrival of Jem to pick her up for the holidays. The christmas play had gone off very well and the girls had now all left until next term. Betty wouldn't be returning but departed with some good memories and a good friend in Elizabeth. The school on the whole knew nothing of Bettys misdemeanor and rumours in the school were that the Colonels visit that day had been because they had caught the burglar and upper second had been involved because it was them he had been trying to rob. The head and upper second did nothing to stop this idea, even the staff believed it and would never be told any different.

Jo was glad she had been able to help Betty. She had changed considerably since she had come home, even more so since Jacks death, all signs of self invovment and selfishness had disappeared. Glancing around the room she made sure everything was up to Mateys standard before she left. A car beeped outside and Jo span round to look out of the window. She knocked against the bureau in her haste and knocked off her photographs. Bending down to pick them up she spotted an envelope at the back, she reached out for it wondering what it could be and brought it out triumphantly. The handwriting was decidedly familiar, with a puzzled look she slit it open and pulled out a thick letter.

To my darling Josephine,

*Hoorah I'm into three figures and I'm off to bed.

Joey paused, why was Jack calling her Josephine? Nobody called her that unless she was in trouble or unless they wanted her to stop and take notice. Then she did a double take, and what about darling, if Josephine was strange then darling was most unexpected. She prepared to take in the rest of Jacks last words to her. The opening had intrigued her and made her take the letter seriously just as Jack had intended.

My Darling Josephine,

I have started this letter a hundred times over the last five years. I've been wanting to tell you so long but didn't know how. Even now I am struggling to find the words. Please don't be angry or go on about favourite maiden aunts, I love you from the bottom of my heart. There its out in the open now. I wish I was with you, telling you in person so I could see your face, I hope its lit up with joy and love, I hope you realise that you feel the same way about me. It doesn't matter if you don't, I willing to wait for the rest of my life for you. For the girl I've loved since she was a scaramouche, causing mayhem wherever she passed. For the woman who so bravely escaped from danger leaving the place she loved behind. From the madam who joked and laughed with me and kept my spirits up when I was feeling low. From the author whose letters I treasure, they bring warmth to the lonely life of a man who needs his family, and I consider you to be my family now. From the headgirl, so firm and fair, if we had children I know you would  love and care for them, giving them the best start in life.
Have I missed anything out? I love everything about you, even the bad bits! Could you ever feel the same about me? Sitting here in the middle of a storm I wonder if I will ever see your face again, will I hear your sweet voice answering my plea. I know this is something that should be asked in person but I fear to leave it unsaid. It would make me the happiest man in the world if you would be my bride. Think about it, about all that we could have together. If you are unsure talk to some of your friends about what mariage has done for them. When you are ready give me your answer. I'll be waiting. And if the answer should be no I will still be your devoted friend when the time is right I'll ask again. If you say yes consider us engaged, ask Jem for my mothers ring, all of my valuables are in his care, and you are the most valuable of all.

Joey, I love you, you are my life and my joy.
Jack.

Jo raised her tear stained face, a smile on her lips. She was engaged to Jack Maynard, it didn't matter that the wedding would never happen. He loved her, she loved him, nothing could change that. Their love was eternal.
