Title: Mary Lou: Between the covers
Post by Angel of the North on Dec 1st, 2003, 12:16am
This is a bit of a spin off from an alternative romance - there are spoilers for it, and you may wish to read that concurrently with this

"Mary lou shook herself out of the jiffy bag where she'd been unceremoniously stuffed by some auctioneer.  She looked around her, realising that she'd travelled forward in time and space, and was now living in 2003, having remained a fourteen year old schoolgirl.

She looked at the slips in the envelope, querying who had the right to do such a thing to *her* of all people.

Something called "Ebay" by the looks of things. She looked round the room in which she had unfolded. Something sat in the corner, humming, and she raised her eyebrows, noting that there was something about Kathie Ferrars on the screen. Noting the door was shut, and she was concealed by pine bookshelves, she settled down, looking at the screen.

Ten minutes later, she gave a low whistle, and wondered whether she should really be reading this. One thing was certain, she was going to fix Joan Bertram when she worked out how to get back. She might not always have been friendly with Miss Ferrars, but that wasn't simply gossip, that was heartfelt and malicious nastiness, and teacher or no, it shouldn't be allowed to continue.

She looked to see what the Abbess had had to say, but it seemed that Catherine hadn't yet completed her re-telling of this familiar episode.  She tapped at the desk impatiently, only to find herself being tapped on the shoulder.

"And precisely what are you doing here?"
Confronted by a 24-year old woman of Sally Denny proportions even Mary Lou blanched.
"Not a sausage."
"Sit down again. Now, some explanations. Exactly who are you, and what are you doing in *MY* room...."

"A hint of her usual self-possession grabbed Miss Trelawney, and in her best impersonation of Bill she replied "Mary Louise Trelawney. And what, may I ask, are you doing ordering me to be packed up and exported from Switzerland."
"Actually, it was sittingborne. And do calm down. Now, would you like a cup of tea. I see we've got a Sophie's World situation, here." Miss Trelawney looked somewhat discomfitted, as she considered herself as well read as anyone else her age.. She found herself being handed a book with a gay red cover, and a picture of a girl, from the bookshelves behind her.
She noted that the bookshelves were double thickness of books, and other books were doubling as temporary table legs.
THere didn't seem to be a bed, and the woman in front of her took a seat on a large squashy chair in the corner.

"What is this thing."
"That, my dear miss inquisitive is a computer, and they (she pointed to a shelf integral to the desk) are the books you belong to."
"1, 2, 3...10, 12 - you've got one missing."
"More than one, actually. Not many with the presence of your good self, I'm afraid. And Chambers are being dreadfully slow. That, is a computer, that is my desk, and this is my room." The woman paused.
"And I'm Angel. We appear to have a situation."
"Angel - is that really your name." Mary Lou blurted this out somewhat unthinkingly.
"As real as any other name. I mean, do you think you're really Mary Lou, or is that just a name given to an idea in the collective unconscious."
"I don't know, but I mean to go to Oxford, and..."
"Cambridge is far better, didn't you know, I went there myself." THere was something rather smug about this girl, and Mary Lou wasn't entirely sure that she liked her. "Do you want a drink? Matey will be appearing next, if I don't take care of one of her precious charges. I wonder, can you drink tea?"
"Of course. Why?"
"It's just that with you wandering out of the story like that, you might not be able to do the same things as the rest of you."
"I'm as real as you are. I bleed the same blood."
"No nuts, Shylock."
 --------------
It didn't originally say 'nuts' as you can imagine.

----------

Mary Lou seemed to be quite shocked, and benefitting from the temporary theft of her speech, Angel responded.
"OK, it's two thousand and three, you're in South West London, and someone seems to have put your book in the wrong sort of package. Otherwise, in your usual wilful and irregular manner, you seem to have deliberately escaped the confines of your story book. Now, I suggest you get back in that Jiffy bag, and I'll post you back where you belong."
"No. It was most uncomfortable, and I'm sure Dr Jem and Miss Annersley would not approve. And anyway, what gives you the right to read stories about my mistresses."
"The same gift that means I'm blessed with your presence until I can figure out how to get you back where you belong. You see, you don't really belong here. Miss Dyer, who used to write about you, died some time ago, and we've kind of carried on what she started, reporting the tales of the chalet school. This is about Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot."
"So I see. I didn't realise..."
"I don't expect you did. Do you really expect to be the confidante of your teachers in every last aspect of their intimate relationships."
"So *that* was why we had that sermon the other week."
"Mary Louise, I suggest you pay attention. You are in the wrong place, and I'm not sure what to do with you." Angel paused, and then handed her a selection of books to read. More kindly she added:
"Maybe you'd like to occupy yourself with these. These ones are school stories - maybe you'd fit in here. And these ones are allegories - well they're both allegories, really. Very popular - more so than Jo Bettany, in fact."
"Fit in"
"Well, see if you fit in these books, just until your real book arrives, and we can see if you can

We tend to chant at drabblers for more story, and it gets abreiviated to chanting! I forgot how mad it might sound! :-[

Vikki - what sort of a chant. Not an indian war chant - like in exploits?

ETA thanks for the explanation... And you've had 3 chunks, that's quite enough.

What is MST3K (did I remember that correctly?)

AIRI - it's where the characters from a story are able to read the story, and make comments on it 'it didn't really happen like that', or 'how did she know that.'

Because they often quote large chunks of the original, they're not often archived on the main fanfiction sites.

I've not done it entirely in the right style, but used that principle, and therefore can cope if ML or any other character appears in an Alternative Romance.

Vikki, you have just hit 7000 posts.

Impresive, do you want to celebrate in some way. We've had a lot of parties, how about something else?

::Best Matey Voice::

Now then, that's quite enough. Too many chunks and you'll be sick. It's quite rich fare you know, and for you that aren't accustomed to it, well, I'll have to dose you with Castor Oil.

It's fine wanting more, but one must remember to be ladylike, and certainly not so greedy, or you may find the whole thing taken away. You should remember those poor unfortunate souls, who simply can't have what they want, when they want it.

Now, go to bed.

And Angel, I'm afraid, as a mere Junior, you can't use a pretend Matey voice to scare the Second Prefect. Just do what she says - it's easier.

OK... you asked for it.

Mary Lou found herself alone in this strange woman's room. In front of her were lumps of Bakelite - or similar. She wasn't really sure. 14 books were on the top of the desk, and she grabbed the thinnest, a green book, with what looked like a butterfly on it.

"Quidditch Through The Ages, by Kenilworthy Whisp"

She started to leaf through it, and was most surprised. For a start, it appeared that in fifty years the world had advanced so far that they could fly.
They she re-read it, and realised that they were talking about some sort of magic, and she relaxed. Sophie's World was still open at the final chapters, and she put down the thin green book after a while, and wondered what in heaven's name she'd run into.
Praying for assistance from Our Father, to protect her from this strange woman, she chanced a glance around the room. The walls were purple, the curtain a gorgeous claret. She walked over, and stroked the soft, warm fabric.
"So you like the curtain? It's a fleece blanket. I kind of altered it. You're not the first I've caught, having a surreptitious stroke. Most of my mates like to cop a feel, occasionally. I didn't choose the purple, though."
"It's a nice room."
"Well, I like it. Why don't you tell me where you are with all this over English Tea."
Mary Lou giggled - a creature more unlike Auntie Joey, she couldn't imagine. As bookish, admittedly, and as untidy.

After a quick confab with her flat mates, Angel reappeared with what looked like a palliasse.

"Air Bed. Pump it up, and you'll find it quite comfortable. That's you sorted out for tonight, anyway."
"Where do you sleep."
"Chair bed, the thing I'm sat on." Mary Lou looked somewhat surprised, as Angel unfolded and refolded the bed. "Very comfortable indeed. There's a plumeau over there as well, nice and warm." She slipped out, and was back in a minute or two, bearing a tray with two mugs of steaming tea, and two slices of fruitcake.
"Now then, let's talk." Mary Lou was dumbstruck for the first time in her life. "I said this was a Sophie's World situation. If you've glanced at the chapter I set you, then you'll see..."
"You set me? I didn't think that was prep."
"Slip of the tongue. Anyway. You'll see that there are layers of reality. In effect, you're as real as Winnie the Pooh, or Harry Potter, and I'm as real as you are, seeing that I've slipped myself into the story. I'm wondering whether you and I, between us, could manage to slip through the portal into the world of books. It beats filling in application forms for jobs. I've got to do that today, so I suggest you do some reading, and we'll talk in the morning. Shouldn't take you that long to clear the first couple of Harry Potters. An hour for the two school books, and 6 for the first two novels."
"It's about Magic."
"It's about truth, honesty, and a young man who bends the rules for far greater reason and purpose than you ever managed, young lady. Now, enjoy the tea, and I'll get on with these."
Thus thoroughly Squashed, Mary Lou sat down to tea and cake. Her strange companion arranged herself on the chair bed, and scribbled, occasionally jotting down notes in the notebook on the (cold) radiator.
It didn't take long for Mary Lou to become completely lost in the books she had put in front of her. She began to think she was actually there - she could taste the food, feel the devil's snare, see the chess game. The three main characters jumped off the page, and she was sucked in, making the connection between the spells and the language lessons at the Chalet School. She hesitated about trying one of the spells, and then found herself dragged out of the book by an icy hand.

"Right, how're you getting on. You seemed to be flickering a bit then. Enjoying the story?"
"Yes. But should I be, I mean it's about witchcraft, and the bible talks about not suffering a witch to live."
"THe bible talks about killing a lot of things. I consider that witchcraft in the bible is about perversion of the natural order, rather than using natural talents. The natural order is the love of God, others and Self. Lord Voldemort is the opposite of all that - he doesn't know what love is, and wouldn't want it even if he knew and understood.  So much of the bible has been subject to the interpretation of men. Spin doctors, after manipulating the story for their own ends."
"The Abbess says that we should always use our own reason as well as tradtion, scripture and experience. Spin Doctors - like in Cricket?"
Angel smiled "Yes, the art of concealing the true movement of the ball, and giving it the appearance of doing something totally different, right until it breaks the wicket."
"You play cricket?"
"No, just like listening to it." The two women settled down for a gossip, Angel telling her about how the England women's team had won their world cup, and discussing the men's matches that she'd seen.
"So, what do you believe."
"Love, and do as you will. Because if you truly love, your will shall be in tune with God's, for God is love."
And now, my dear, time for bed. I'll introduce you to Tanya tomorrow.

Once a tired fourteen year old had found herself ensconced in the living room, Angel and Tanya settled themselves in the kitchen over tea and ice-cream.
"You haven't eaten a whole carton of ice-cream."
"Well, not in one go."
"There is some of the toffee left?"
"Erm, no."
"Then perhaps you better had go to Safeways. There's always crackers and jam you know."
"Gone off wheat and bread recently."
"Know what you mean. I'm only eating jam because I need a jam jar. My spider plant is heavily pregnant and needs an emergency caesarean." (1)
"Right."
"So when do I get to meet this Mary Lou of yours. I can't say I've read much of the Chalet school books. Got lots of other kids books at home, but not the Chalet school."
"You're in for a treat. I've not got many."
"Would you mind telling me precisely what is going on?"
"Well, you remember the portal into the world of fiction. (http://www-alavi.ch.cam.ac.uk/matthew/story/)"
"Yeah kind of."
"And you remember it was destroyed?"
"Why do I think I do not like the way this is going?" Angel ignored Tanya's tone, and carried on.
"And you remember how the door into Narnia was a humble wardrobe."
"Yeeeeees."
"Well, I think someone's turned this into a thin place, and we've kind of got a situation."
"Whatever it is, I really don't think I want to hear it. Oh, and by the way, I've got your other copy of OOTP(2) for you. It's in a jiffy bag, keep it from being damp."
" But Tanya...
"If this is anything like you and the others cooked up, then I'm probably best off not knowing." Tanya handed over the book, not understanding the wariness being exhibited by her flatmate towards a humble jiffy bag.
"OK, Thanks."
Angel returned to her room, resolving only to open the jiffy bag in the morning, when she could face the possibility of the advent of another character, and she really didn't think that it was just going to be Hermione.

--
(1) This is, in fact, a redux of the conversation T and I had this evening.
(2) Yes, I do have 2 copies of OOTP - adults and kids.
(3) As the demand doesn't seem high, I'll take this as an opportunity to say that I shan't be around much the next couple of days,
(4) The portal into the world of fiction comes from a very bizarre story written by Cambridge Methsoc last year. You don't need to read all of it, but i have linked to it.

Um, could you explain please?

Lots of us are not too good with abbreviations, my noble self included.

*thinks this may come into the P.E.P. initiative as well*

[aware of the irony of that one - PEP stands for Pure English Please; not that I'm saying the quality of your English is anything other than very high, just that lots of us are not entirely au fait with abbreviations frequently used across the net]

Sorry, that wasn't about anything other than being deliberately obtuse.  And 'What Price' is definitely a OOAOMLism

Angel offers a small clue:
The slash indicates any romantic pairing - heterosexual or gay.

The "what price?" bit was wholly intelligible, it was the abbreviations that got me.

Mary-Lou and Ron? Xanthe is right, that is just so many levels of wrong. Which is precisely why I'd like to see it!  ;D

Angel eyed the Jiffy bag on the shelf, wondering if she could get away with not opening it for a few days. After all, she had so much to ask Mary Lou.
Speaking of whom, the morning had brought an early riser into her room, when she was barely awake.
"And pray, would you barge into the room of Miss Ferrars with so much aplomb?"
"No. What do I call you."
"Angel, and I suggest that you jump in the bath before any of us do."
"You said you'd explain about that." She vaguely indicated the shelves around her and the computer.
"OK, Fanfiction. There's two sorts - the sort where the author has died, and we carry it on, and the sort where the author just hasn't gotten around to writing the next instalment. The former is Chalet school and Narnia, the latter is Harry Potter. Some say it's a higher form of Literary Criticism, actually."
"What would the Abbess say?"
"I really couldn't tell you."
"So, what's this about Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot then."
"I'm not sure you ought to butting in like this. Even you, Miss Trelawney."
"So what happens to me?"
"You become the prize butter-in of the school, with a bigger nose than Joey, and go and have an affair with Reg Entwistle." Mary Lou looked utterly horrified.
"Right, now, it's up to you to stop that happening."

Meanwhile, in another place entirely, the occupants of number 12, Grimmauld Place, and number 4, privet drive were somewhat startled by the abrupt disappearance of some of their number. Mary Lou, on the other hand, was sat in another room, reading early chalet school novels. She hadn't realised that Joey Bettany herself had started off by writing fanfiction, which, by the definitions suggested that first Elsie book had been.
She felt a tingling down her spine, and the Kenwigses that were hanging round her shoulders curled a little at the ends, and then relaxed as if nothing had happened.
She reached for the brush, and found herself in possession of a small cloth badge.
"British Trampoline Federation - Advanced Coach." Another presented itself. "British Trampoline Federation, Elementary Gold. British Trampoline Federation - Judge." She wondered what on earth trampolining was, and thought it could actually be quite good fun.
As Angel had said, she'd finished the first Harry Potter books in short order, and was going into her room to put them back, when she heard voices, although no one had come in through the door that she knew of.

"I'm Jenny Maynard, and I demand to know exactly what you're doing." Two girls and a boy were stood in Angel's small room. "I just had a text from my father, Geoff Maynard, saying my little sister's got an offer from some crackpot school or other. Hogwash, I think."
"It's Hogwarts, and it's not a crackpot school. And what are you doing here, anyway, you're nothing to do with any of the stories?" Jenny Maynard looked aghast at the rudeness from the frizzy haired upstart, and turned to the door, where Mary Lou was standing there, in her 50s school clothes, staring at the new arrivals.

The receptionist didn't seem to be much older than the other two, probably eighteen or so. Mary Lou stood, staring at them, as impolitely as she knew how.

"Coo - you don't suppose this is a muggle." The red headed one turned to his frizzy haired companion for inspiration.
"I would imagine that they all are. Can't you tell? Electricity everywhere, of course they're all muggle." She spoke with natural authority that bested even Mary Lou. "And I know who *you* are. Gentian Blue, Silver, and crimson. You're a Chaletian. I read all the stories, before I knew I was a witch of course."
"And you're Hermione Granger. I thought you only existed in books."
"Same here. Look, can you do magic." The look of horror on Mary Lou's face, the mere idea that she could be a witch, told it all.
"OK, you're not. Well, not necessarily. After all, some people do find out they've got talents later in life you know. The oldest one was nearly 90."
"As old as Miss Annersley?" Jenny Maynard couldn't help butting in. "Look, I was a Chaletian as well. English Branch of course. Daddy was involved in the children's hospital next door. Specialised in dentistry, particularly for those with cleft palates, things like that."
"The Geoff Maynard?" Hermione was turning to her in short order. "He's really famous, works with my parents sometimes. Hang on one minute. How did you know to come here?"

Angel felt dizzy. She was trying to keep the relationships in the room straight, and had to go and lie down. Hermione was, apparently, a Chalet School fan. Fair enough. Mary Lou was now a Harry Potter fan, fair enough. That meant that they'd read about each other, and that was fine. Jenny Maynard was the grand daughter of Joey, and her father wasn't born when Mary Lou was extant, aged fifteen in the fifties. Ah. Confusion. Go back and start again.
Mary Lou and Hermione were Mobius characters, simultaneously fictional and non-fictional. They could reference each other, on the same scale, although they didn't exist in the same space-time continuum. However, as this was fiction, all times could co-exist at the same time, and there was no one single possible future, as it was possible for more than one option to be explored - the fandom websites. Therefore, fiction was something like heaven, where there is no time, and everything coexists perfectly, and without corruption, while allowing for myriad and unitary possible futures. Q.E.D.
So where the hell did Ron fit into all this?

Angel then realised it was worse than she thought. In effect, she had a double Mobius. The Granger parents were practising dentistry with Geoff Maynard. Geoff Maynard's younger daughter was going to Hogwarts in September, and if she wasn't much mistaken, Mrs Granger had been a Chaletian.

This was starting to sound like something out of Adrienne, and therefore so farfetched it had to be true. Reaching for her cuddly toy, she found herself in the presence of something warm, furry, and very much alive.

"They didn't talk to the Grangers, my child, because they were scared. How would they know that Hermione was at Hogwarts?" The creature coalesced into a Lion, behind whom the wall had disappeared, along with the rain, the car park and the whole of London.

Angel thought about looking back, and then heard gasps behind her.  The Lion spoke again, somehow.

"If they want to come, it is their decision. All they have to do is run after me, before they get stuck on the ground. You chose to come - you do not wish to be left behind."

"No Aslan." Angel found herself running beside the Lion, leaving behind the world she knew, clinging onto the mane by the tips of the strand, and longing to bury herself in that rich and velvety fur, as few others had before her. She physically couldn't look back now, looking only onward as they moved towards a sunlit sea, where a cloud of lilies floated on the water, and a small boat was surrounded by sea-folk.

Landing on the deck, Aslan walked over to Caspian. "I bring fresh crew for your journey, with gifts of which you shall learn." The king saluted the Lion, and bowed to his visitors.

"Welcome to the end of the world, sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve." Angel looked surprised at the 'son' comment, until she saw two men, unmistakeably Harry Potter and Remus Lupin.

There will an all around introduction now they're on the Dawn Treader. There's HP fans who've never read CS following this story, and vice versa. Surprisingly, both groups seem *quite* familiar with Narnia. If anyone isn't, I'll weave it in, it's not too much of a problem.

The whole magic thing will take on a different twist in Narnia, as will the questions of prejudice, in particular towards Remus. (For those who know the story of Maugrim in LW&W that should suffice).

Title: Re: Mary Lou: Between the covers

Angel, you may well have to do some explaining.  I don't recollect a Maugrim at all, and I thought I knew Narnia pretty thoroughly  :-[.

Caspian nodded to his visitors, and suggested that they sit up by the bowsprit. The group did just that, and were joined by Aslan, who curled up beside them, washing his paws, like a contented pussy cat.
"I welcome you to Narnia, for we are well used to travellers to these lands.  I am Caspian, King of Narnia, and Emperor of the Lone Islands. We have been on a voyage of discovery, even to the uttermost east, who are you, Sons of Adam, and Daughters of Eve."
Mary Lou had grown wide eyed by this introduction, although Hermione seemed to be glancing at Remus, and had a strange light in her eyes, which Remus shared.
"I believe som introductions may be appropriate, for some of us have not encountered the others before, or even anything like. Remus shifted awkwardly, and now angel was watching him covertly.
"I am Aslan, son of the Emperor over the Sea." The Lion returned to washing his fur, not apparently caring at the disturbance this caused. Hermione went forward, and bowed to him.
"Sir. My name is Hermione Granger, and..." For once know it all Hermione Granger was at a loss for words. She didn't know how to introduce herself to one who so obviously seemed to know everything about her.
"You are a witch, are you not." At the collective gasp from the Narnians, Aslan continued. "Not the evil magics of Jadis, but something to proud of, so be proud of it, Daughter of Eve."
"My Name is Hermione, and I'm the first witch in my family. My parents are dentists, and we live in Surrey. I love reading, and exploring the mind. I'm a prefect at Hogwarts, and I've just taken my OWLS - examinations in Magic."
"Much like my own Dear Dr Cornelius?" Caspian seemed to be quite taken by the young witch as an intellectual companion.
Hermione blushed, realising the force of the compliment, and went to introduce the others, but the demeanour of the lion seemed to forbid it, even though he apparently did nothing, bar change his ministrations from his pelt to his left front paw.
She sat down, and waited for the others to begin.

Mary Lou took in Hermione - over-achiever, slightly pasty and not into sports by the looks of things. Matey would be dosing her to high heaven, and the frizzy brown hair would be in two plaits before you could say 'Jack Robinson'. She twisted her own blond rope around her hands, and wondered what made Hermione like this. She seemed on edge all the time, and at the same time so sure that what she had didn't really matter, but she did it anyway.
She looked up, and realised she was next.
"My name is Mary Louise Trelawney - Mary Lou - and I'm a Chaletian."
"Surely you are more than the sum of your school, my dear?" Mary Lou was sure the Lion had spoken, but he didn't seem to have said a word. She hesitated, and then plunged on. "I'm not magical - I go to the CofE because I like church, and I like God."
"A good reason, my dear."
She didn't know who had spoken, but assumed that it was the last man to arrive, and continued. "I like life, and I want to go to Oxford and be an Archaeologist."
She was lost now, and let the silence hang. It was Angel that rescued her.
"My name is Angel, and I suppose I'm from the woods between the world. I share in the lives of all these people, but I am simply a daughter of Eve. I follow Christ - I'm a Methodist. Dad died three years ago, Mum is still here. Just me and her. I love to read and write." She pulled at her hair, awkwardly, as it was shorter than makes it easy.
"Woods between the worlds?" Caspian looked at her, and queried.
"Yes. When Narnia began, there was the ending of an older empire. Polly and Digory jumped through pools in a wood into the different worlds. I feel like that, jumping between Switzerland, St Briavel's, Hogwarts and Narnia."
"Well said, child. For ultimately the world is all that is within your imagination."
Angel sat back, and Harry, who could only be described as awkward stood.
"I'm Harry Potter, and I'm a wizard. I'm an orphan, and I love to play Quidditch, it's a sport on broomsticks. I like Defence against the Dark Arts best, and I want to be an Auror." The messy hair caught in the breeze, and he flattened it, but not before they'd seen the scar.
"And that's where someone couldn't kill me when I was a baby." Caspian looked confused, so he carried on.
"In our world, there's an evil wizard, Voldemort, intent on destroying the people he deems unworthy. He killed my parents. Then he tried to kill me, and couldn't. It made him disappear, only he came back this year."
"Like Jadis, or in my own time the usurper that took the throne from me. It is only now that it is sufficiently peaceful for my being able to take this voyage.
Well I know the burden of expectation, sire." Harry looked at Caspian, and then gave his first genuine smile, and nodded.

Personally I'm not sure that ML is any more than the sum of her school.

There is nohing of the real world about her, and I can't see her coping very well with Narnia either, much less Hogwarts. It will be interesting to see what you do with her Angel.

Title: Re: Mary Lou: Between the covers
Post by Angel of the North on Dec 5th, 2003, 1:06pm
For the sake of clarity the time zones are:

Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader, after we've said goodbye to Lucy et al

Harry Potter - after the ending of Book V

CS - the 5 days during which ML is unconscious, ergo she still has her hair.

--------

Harry sat down, brushing his messy black hair out of his face, and then cleaned his specs. Surreptitiously getting his wand out he cast a cleaning charm, and found that in not only got rid of the grime, but renewed his spectacles.
"You will find that your magic is both more and less powerful here. Far more is dependent on the will of the individual. You all will find healing here, for all of you need it."
"What about Caspian, sir?"
"What about Caspian? I am telling you your story, and not his."
Remus had perched on the gunwales of the ship, and was idly rubbing a plaque there. Suddenly he winced, and examined the plaque again.
"Is there a problem?" Remus shook his head, and hid the burn on his hand. Caspian, intrigued by those present, turned his attention to the gangling red head.
"I'm Ron, I'm a Weasley, a Wizard and their best friends." He indicated Hermione and Harry.
"A fine thing to be." For the first time, the Lion seemed to be paying attention, and spoke audibly - at least audibly to all of them. Ron flushed, but continued doggedly. "I don't know what I want to do after Hogwarts, apart from work to defeatin You-Know-Who. and I like Quidditch."
"I'm afraid that I don't know who, sire."  Caspian was politely intrigued.
Ron stammered, but the peaceful atmosphere of the Dawn Treader seemed to have given him courage.
"Voldemort. The one that killed Harry's parents." He sat down again, and attention was turned to Jenny Maynard.
"I'm Jenny. I went to the Chalet School in Wales, and I'm now working as a receptionist for the Grangers. I want to train as a dentist as well." She sat straight as a poker, her dreadlocks going down her back, and her coffee coloured skin gleaming in the light. Seeing that she wasn't going to say any more, the company turned to Remus, the last of the visitors.
"My name is Remus..." He was interrupted by a startled cry from one of the sailors, who had noticed his slightly hairy hands, and the burn on his palm, the greying flecks through his hair, and the unconscious air of someone who was older than his 36 years.
"You a werewolf, burnt by the silver?" The cry was harsh, and the group were awakened to the fact they weren't the only ones having an audience with Aslan.
At this the great Lion stood, and walked carefully through the middle, bowing his head to Remus, who carefully reached and stroked it, feeling the warmth spreading through him.
The ones who didn't know him had recoiled, and Caspian had gone so far as to draw his sword.
"From one creature to another, I bid you welcome in these lands of mine. Some will not always be so understanding as they ought, nor so welcoming as they should, but, friend of Narnia, they will treat you as they must, with the utmost respect and warmth that behoves them towards a friend of mine, and a guest of Narnia." Caspian, the young, blond king, with the circlet of gold in his hair looked thoroughly ashamed of himself. He sheathed his sword, and walked over.
"I believe that I have Queen Lucy's salve, if that would help." Remus accepted warily, and Caspian instructed the captain to get the tiny diamond bottle. When he returned, Caspian treated the wound himself, watching as it disappeared.
"Phoenix tears, most effective. Thank you, Sire." Caspian sat awkwardly, and Remus returned to his seat on the gunwales.
"I am Remus Lupin, and yes, I am a werewolf. I was a small boy when I was bitten, and it was only through the graces of Albus Dumbledore that I was able to qualify as a wizard. I teach Defence against the Dark Arts, and I fight for the light against the growing darkness, both without, and within."
"I bid you welcome." Caspian acknowledged the man, and suppressing his natural suspicions, moved to the middle.
"I think now is the time to eat." He turned to Aslan, but, in the time it had taken the group to refocus, the Lion had disappeared.

Caspian ordered that hammocks be slung for the men, and the girls were given his cabin.
He sighed at the thought of still not getting his cabin back for the rest of the journey. One of the crew smiled nastily at Remus. Even under Aslan's protection it seemed that the werewolf still attracted more than the usual enmity.
He liked Harry and Ron. Hermione and Mary Lou he wasn't sure of. Both of them seemed brittle and two dimensional. His thoughts turned to the Star's Daughter, and the sweet dreams and motion of the ship lulled the king to sleep.

Hate to bother you, but ... my failure to identify Maugrim refuses to stop nagging.  I've just searched my copy of LW&W for references to wolves and/or werewolves (based on ref. to Lupin), and come up only with:
Fenris Ulf, Captain of the Secret Police -- the one whose death gives Peter his title of Sir Peter Fenris-Bane
nameless wolf who reports death of his captain
nameless wolves grouped with the other "hunting animals" on Aslan's side

I hope this isn't another instance of publishers mutilating American editions.

*Still fuming over idiocy of  making "Philosopher's Stone" "Sorcerer's Stone"*

For some reason the American editions all had Fenfis Ulf instead of Maugrim, I don't know why, but that's been the case since they were first published. I believe that's the only difference though, as I have an American set as well as several British sets and I've never noticed any other changes!

Title: Re: Mary Lou: Between the covers
Post by Angel of the North on Dec 6th, 2003, 1:25pm
Yes, that's the werewolf reference that I was intending. I read the books again a couple of months ago, and about 6 months before that.

I'm enjoying this, because, although at one level, it's silly and fun, there's some quite serious ideas going into it. I'm helping out at Youth Club this evening, so I'm not sure when the next update will be.

Right. Warning - there are spoilers here for Harry Potter book V - Order of the Phoenix.  From now on, spoilers for all three series will abound.

To be going on with:

Hermione didn't appreciate the motion of the ship, and walked up to the deck in order to try and get some fresh air. The moons were full, and she was surprised by the fact that Professor Lupin hadn't transformed. He seemed disconcerted as well, pacing the deck as he was.

"Professor."
"Hermione, what brings you up here?"
"Felt sick. Sir, It's just that, I don't know how to ask but..?"
"Why haven't I transformed? The moons are different here. There are two of them, and it means that I transform at will, rather than at the behest of others." Unusually for the gentle professor, he seemed unwilling to talk, sitting on the deck as he was, curled up on a cushion.
"Do you miss him?"
The professor shook his head, and looked up at Hermione, blank.
"What's happened, professor?"
"Nothing. Go for a walk along the deck, keeping to the leeward side." Taking the unsubtle hint, she left. It was one thing to deal with the boys. Her professor was a different matter.
Remus sighed. Caspian had ordered that hammocks be slung for all the extra men. When the time had come for them to go to bed, there had been one short.
The explanation given was that he wasn't a man, he was a werewolf, and therefore he should sleep on deck, with all the other animals.

Thanks for all your kind words. I'm kind of shocked by how long this is getting - your encouragement is certainly making me write, and the chants and polite requests make me write regularly.

---------

Remus Lupin stayed on the deck, his back to Hermione, enjoying the full moon for the first time in his life, tempted to change into his wolf form and back, like a normal animagus.
But it wasn't the same without Sirius. He missed them, wanted to be able to show them that he was like them, that he could change at will now. Even though he was scared of being a wolf. He didn't know if he'd be the same, or what it meant to be a werewolf in this place. The fear and suspicion were the same everywhere, even this place that the Magicals called heaven.
He wondered what his mother would have said, his being in Narnia, when she could no longer visit. Or what Hagrid would have said, coming near the Halls of Harfang where he had been born.
Even in heaven he was seen as being an outcast, something to be afraid of, and here. Here he was without friends, without familiar and without comfort - and the teenaged children of the next generation to watch out for.
Angel at least had taken care of the girls, ordering that Mary Louise child to bed at the same time as Hermione, and then discreetly disappearing somewhere. But she didn't understand, how could she. She wasn't magical, she wasn't...
"So you exclude others, just as you yourself have been excluded?"
He hadn't realised he'd muttered the last thought aloud...

The voice didn't seem keen to reveal itself, it simply rustled to a halt on the gunwales, and paused there, giving occasional glimpses of well worn soles from underneath the invisibility cloak.
Remus picked up the wand, and with a murmured Accio the cloak came flying to his hand, bringing with it the wearer.

The loud thud didn't seem to have affected the other sailors, and they were well within sight of Ramandu's island, where Caspian would meet the star's daughter again.
Remus conjured a small bluebell coloured fire, that sat as if held by a string above the deck to illuminate himself and his companion, who had rearranged herself from the undignified heap in which she had been, the headscarf that covered her distinctive locks having been dislodged in the process.

Remus looked as if he had seen a ghost, and an unwelcome one at that. Tired as he was, and overwrought, he let all his feelings out in a single word.

"You!"

Now beginning to chant, softly at first, then crescendoing (?) to a mighty roar.

A quick rundown on the common HP terms that I'm using here:

Accio - A summoning charm.
Animagus - A wizard who can transform into an animal at will, the form taken reflecting the personality of that wizard/witch. e.g. Harry's dad turned into a stag
Metamorphmagus - someone that can alter aspects of their appearance at will. Metamorphmagi are born, Animagi are made.
Transfiguration - turning one thing into another
Finite Incantatem - the ending of a spell
Quidditch - aerial netball with 4 balls, 6 hoops and 7 players on each side. Harry plays seeker, having to catch the smallest ball to claim 150 points.

If there's anything you need clarifying about any of the three worlds, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks very much for all the compliments. I'm a bit overwhelmed...
Angel

I'm feeling really guily that I always read the drabbles, but I never tell anyone how much I enjoy them and am always waiting for the next part!  I really like this and having read all 3 series it ought to make some sense???  It's a bit clearer now everyone in is Narnia - nevermind, I'll have to reread it at a slower pace methinks!

It's one of my worst habits when it comes to writing. I know my own worlds so well, I forget that other people don't.

Part of the problem is having crossed over HP and Narnia before now, I have to remember I have quite a large frame of reference.

I've already posted so many spoilers for the serieses that this won't hurt.

Remus Lupin: Werewolf, and best friend of Harry's father, along with Sirius, and Peter. Nickname Moony. Taught Defense against the Dark arts for a year
Sirius Black: as of OOTP, dead. Nickname of Padfoot, prankster, dog animagus. Godfather of Harry, and convicted of the Potters murders, Hallowe'en 81, but was innocent
Peter Pettigrew - presumed dead after the potters murder, but had used his rat animagus form as cover, and hidden in the home of the Weasleys for 12 years. nickname - wormtail
James Potter, dead for 15 years, father of Harry, husband of Lily. died aged around 21.
Severus Snape - contemporary of the above, Potions master at Hogwarts, bitter enemy of the same.

Harry Potter - the eponymous hero, famous in the wizarding world for something he can't even remember. Angry, powerful, and prone to a hero thing.
Hermione Granger - the school swot.
Ron Weasley - the ordinary bloke, and best mate to Harry and Hermione.

and I haven't decided who the woman is yet

Angel, this is good, and knowing all three series I ought to be able to keep up to it.

I am finding that it needs concentration though, definatly not one to read whilst working on college work, shouting at the children and watching TV all at the same time!  ;D (Commonly called multitasking!)

Do keep going, I'm looking forward to seeing their reactions to everything.

Below decks, Harry was having trouble sleeping, his dreams still haunted even though he was a universe away from the hell that was presently Hogwarts.
He cried out in his sleep more than once, and could be heard telling Sirius not to go through the veil, begging him to come back. In his head he was in front of the two way mirror, asking for "Sirius Black" his voice hoarse, and blanketed with unshed tears.
Ron padded towards him, and raised his wand, muttering a silencing charm over his friend, as some of the sailors could be heard complaining about the 'children'.
It seemed, however, that they were not destined to be children much longer. Already Harry was showing the effects of the Narnian air, and was starting to fit the older manner he had consistently adopted. His face was growing, and a bare twelve hours had brought a maturity which he had previously been lacking.
The corollary was that it made the grief more acute, the realisation of what he had lost more desperate, and the need for his Godfather more apparent.  His life was divided in two, and he was being wrenched away from his childhood by a harsher power.
Ron looked at himself in the small mirror. He had changed a little, he conceded. It didn't bother him, but the change wrought in his friend was painful to see.
He wondered if that Lion was still around, becoming aware of a warmth that was surrounding him on the cold deck. He watched the sweat break on his friend's face, the trashing become wider, and wished in his heart that Hermione was down here, as surely she *must* know some charm that would make a hammock safe for Harry.
To the other side of their part of the deck, Caspian was the model of a king, as still as a knight in marble, and with a smile on his face that Ron suspected he would only see on Harry in death. He wanted to kick the king, just for being like Harry, but having it all, when Harry didn't. For knowing that good was waiting for him the following day, for being able to love, to live and to travel freely.
He fingered his wand, thinking it would be unfair to hex a muggle, but feeling the magic, and wanting to channel it away from him friend. Wanting someone else to share in that pain. Harry cried out again, momentarily distracting him, as it wasn't the silenced cry, but the rocking that had attracted the attention. Harry had once said that he'd learnt to be quiet in his sleep, that shouting meant that his aunt and uncle would be beating him in his cupboard. But now the dreams denied all silence, and broke through the resolve, not out of any weakness from Harry, but by the scale of the nightmares. With a final shake, Harry settled into normal sleep, and Ron returned to his own hammock.
Had Harry been able to be vocal, the words would have chilled the soul.
"I will NOT kill."

Hermione returned to her bunk, past her snoring cabin-mates. Conjuring more hammocks was beyond her, but she had been able to transfigure a couple of comfy mattresses for herself and Jenny. Mary Lou preferred the hammock, for some reason, and had clambered in, gangly limbs and all.
She lay on the mattress, wondering who had been with professor Lupin. She assumed that Harry had gone to find him, him being the only one of the party with an invisibility cloak. There had been a very heavy thud, and then - nothing. It was going on out of her line of sight, but aside from a single word, Hermione had heard nothing. She assumed that some sort of privacy charm had been cast.
Having recovered from the seasickness, she threw herself onto her bed, and tried to sleep. Too much was ticking over, trying to understand Jenny and Mary Louise. What she knew about MaryLou was from the books, but she realised that Mary Lou of the later books wasn't here yet, that she was barely 14, and part of an adoring crowd that thought her the cats bathmat. Idly she wondered where in the series she came from - obviously round about her eponymous book, as she still had all her long blond hair, and attitude problem.
Her attention thus diverted, she was therefore only dimly aware of a presence in the room, before it muttered Dormans and she remembered nothing more.

Remus sat motionless on the deck the following morning, and it took Mary Lou to risk enraging the werewolf by suggesting that he might come ashore to meet the Lords of Narnia.

He shook his head, staring mutely into space, and it fell to Angel to remain on the ship, while the Narnians left the ship as rapidly as possible.

Hermione particularly seemed to be grateful to get her feet on solid ground, even though the sea at the end of the world could never be described as being rough. More 'undulating on a miniscule scale'

Jenny had stayed aboard as well, accustomed as she was to the motion of ships. Remus looked around at the 'children' and noted how some of them had changed.  He had offered to adapt a cabin below stairs for the women, and had transfigured the cabin as a wedding gift to Caspian.

It didn't seem to shake his mood. He was distant from the others, and Mary Lou had reported that when she had gone aboved decks at dawn he had appeared to be talking to himself. She seemed to have decided that he was her latest project, and the Hogwarts students weren't happy.

Jenny, accustomed as she was to the ways of her Grandmother, had backed up her fellow Chaletian loyally, but it had been Harry and Hermione who had been the most upset, telling her in no uncertain terms that no matter where she came from her behaviour was unacceptable, and that she shouldn't meddle like that.

Mary Lou had demanded to go back after that, and more than one of the sailors had compared her to a marginally more useful Eustace.

Caspian had been so full of the wedding that he hadn't noticed the slight tensions or changes in the new group. Hermione had offered to join his lady and act as her attendant, an offer accepted as she was by far the most suitable of the women on the ship. Mary Lou had also gone, not wanting to miss out.

And so Remus was left to reflect on the Muses of the Night.

Jenny watched the werewolf, and wondered whether she should have gone ashore with the others. Anyway, she needed time to think. She'd heard of Mary Louise Trelawney of course, who hadn't  - the great female archaeoogist who'd been murdered by terrorists in southern egypt.

There were photos in the Great Album that housed the complete list of the family, and all its branches. Her grandmother, though old, could still command her audience, and every five years it was expected that all who had come under her care would gather together at the Gornetz Platz for Christmas.

She had heard how difficult it was, the first time that someone didn't come - Margot had been the first, killed for being white in a coup in some central african republic or other. Mike had gone in Northern Ireland, and Grandpa Maynard was the most recent of all, falling asleep quietly. Uncle Jem and Aunty Madge had died before she was born, but Auntie Mollie had defied all expecatations and she and Uncle Dick lived in a retirement home on the Sussex Coast

And here was Mary Lou as her Grandmother must have known her, and wondered if this is what Grandma Joey had really been like when she was a child. She still butted in when one wouldn't expect it, even now.

Jenny hung her legs over the side,  and decided on reflection that she really couldn't cope with a Miss Trelawney in need of a squashing and a Miss Granger who was trying to do the squashing. It was too much like a recipe for a headache. She quite liked the look of Harry, young as he was. An old soul, that looked his emotional age now, with tiny speckles of white in the raven black hair.

Stripping down to a swimsuit she'd borrowed, she dived into the warm water.

Being a chaletian she was accustomed to swimming, and joined the mermaids that were around the ship. It was assumed by the Narnians that Caspian and Rhiannon would be betrothed on the island, and the married at Cair Paravel, and the merfolk wanted to carry the news to the people of Narnia, and she listened to their excited chatter as they planned for their gifts.

Each wished to give modest presents - combs, hair grips or similar ornaments.

On the island, however, things weren't quite going to plan. Although Rhiannon was quite taken with the young king, she wasn't entirely convinced of the merits of leaving her island and journeying to the heart of the world. She invited the entire ship's company to remain with her for some time, and Caspian smitten that he was, ordered the whole of the crew to disembark. The non-Narnians couldn't be ordered, but the polite request was framed in the most encouraging terms, and Remus had left the boat in a quiet daze.

He'd been longing to leave the boat after his visitor, wanting to see if what she had said to him was true, that he would keep his mind when he transformed. He didn't know, didn't understand why the Queen's Cordial wouldn't work, or whether it didn't work on bites so old as his.

On the island he joined the merry table, where Caspian and Rhiannon took the places of honour, and he found himself between Mary Lou and Angel. Harry was sitting with Jenny, and Hermione was amongst the Lords of Narnia, engrossed in their conversation, and trying to find out as much as she could about them, and the world in which they lived.

Mary Lou was more perceptive than he'd realised. She commented quietly about grieving, and admitted that she missed her grandmother sorely, and because of missing her grandmother had come to feel the lack of her father more acutely. Remus had been awkward at first, and then, realising that she hadn't aged as the other 'children' had, started to tell her stories of his own youth, about Sirius and James and Peter and himself.
In turn, Mary Lou talked about the chalet school, and they discussed the merits of the places. Gradually Mary Lou found her horizons broadened, unwittingly, and they were quite engrossed by the time the King and his future Queen chose to retire.
