Twisted Evil Laughing Twisted Evil Music to my ears!!! Laughing Twisted Evil Laughing

Beneath the flattened coral reef, two figures stirred. Although unable to move out of the way of the debris, the fact that the water slows any falling object meant that, when the basking shark’s tail had swept around, the two divers were able to react. Nancy had suddenly felt herself pushed down, toward the seabed, there was a small cave at the base of the reef and Col had slammed both of them into the cave just before the rest of the reef fell and blocked the cave entrance.

Inside there was barely enough room to move, although not pitch black, the sunlight had been severely curtailed by the coral and Nancy reached for the small, but powerful torch in her wetsuit pocket. Glancing round quickly she saw that Col was in trouble, somehow, possibly by a piece of falling coral – it had very sharp edges – the tubing between his mouthpiece and the oxygen tank had been severed. Huge bubbles of air were escaping, despite his frantic attempts to stop them. Nancy reached across and tapped him on the shoulder, when he turned round she offered her mouthpiece. Col took a couple of deep breaths before returning it; he reached for his slate,

“Thanks, my tank’s useless!”

They both looked at the dial on Col’s oxygen tank, it read empty.

““Can we get out of this cave?” Nancy wrote, they both moved to the entrance of the cave, it was completely blocked with debris. The both tried pushing at some of the blocks in an attempt to move them. All they received for their troubles were two pairs of bloody hands where the coral scratched them.

““Does the back of the cave lead anywhere?”

Col shook his head, ““Dead end!” He paused then wrote, ““Best if we sit still, use less oxygen, we may have a wait until Ben can get help.”

““How much oxygen do we have?”

““With both of us? 15-20 minutes or so, and all we can do is wait…”

The two continued to pass the oxygen mouthpiece back and forth, breathing in life each time. Unable to do anything but wait, they continued writing to each other, carrying on a conversation. Col passed the mouthpiece back to Nancy, while she sucked in more oxygen he wrote on the slate,

““Good to see you have big lungs!”

Nancy passed the mouthpiece back and wrote,

““Hey, first it’s my buoyancy, now big lungs!”

““I admire big lungs…and buoyancy…in a woman!”

On reading this Nancy started to laugh and had to quickly control herself so she could use the mouthpiece again. Col rubbed the slate clean and wrote again,

““You are very pretty when you laugh.”

Nancy looked across, then replied,

““Why thank you! But I’m much older than you, Col,”

““Doesn’t matter, I like older women,”

Nancy smiled slightly, then wrote.

““I’m spoken for,”

Col took the slate back, after glancing across at Nancy he wrote,

““Hmmm, no ring, so no husband. Boyfriend?”

Nancy shook her head, Col thought for a moment,

““Girlfriend?”

Nancy nodded a little diffidently,

““Figures, just my luck! Let me guess – Kathie?”

Nancy nodded again,

““Good taste!”

““You’ve no problem with that?”

Col looked across at the woman, he shrugged,

““No problem, why should I? So long as you’re happy!”

Nancy thought for a while then wrote again,

““Some people think it’s unnatural,”

““Dinosaurs! No wait, that’s unfair – to dinosaurs! I’m sure there were any number of gay T-Rex’s about! Can’t see Hollywood showing them in Jurassic Park 4 though!”

Nancy started laughing again. Trying desperately not to drop the mouthpiece while she did so!

#421:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Fri Jun 04, 2004 8:51 pm

Next bit - haven't written any more.

On the surface, in the boat, everyone waited in silence. Kathie stood, very pale beneath her tan, saying nothing, just staring out to sea, watching the ocean for any signs that the instructors had found them. Ruth and Rosalind stood with her, one on either side, protecting her from any outside interference.

“Why haven’t they found her?” she whispered, “They said it would be easy, only a small area to search, why haven’t they found her yet?”

Ruth and Rosalind exchanged glances over Kathie’s head, “They’ll find her, Kathie,” Ruth said persuasively, “They’ve still got plenty of time, didn’t you hear Mark? He said they had more than 30 minutes air left, lots of time.”

“They are probably stuck under some coral,” Rosalind continued, “Nancy’s too tough to be beaten by a load of microscopic animals!”

“I can’t lose her now, you know,” Kathie continued, oblivious to everything her friends were saying. “I’ve only just found her.”

...

Inside the cave time ticked away, Nancy and Col continued to write messages to each other. When Nancy’s torch failed there were a few minutes in semi darkness until Col was able to retrieve his own torch and switch it on. He took the opportunity to check the dial on Nancy’s tank, Nancy was unable to see it due to the cramped confines of the cave. She looked at Col with a question on her face.

“Five minutes or so,” Col wrote abruptly, “There’s always some leeway though.”

Nancy nodded soberly, the pair continued to share the mouthpiece, swapping back and forth.

“Are you planning to stay a diving instructor, Col?”

“Probably, I enjoy it. Eventually I’ll run my own business, teach Commercial diving as well as the ordinary. What about you? What do you do?”

Nancy told him, Col read the message then shook his head in disbelief, “Can’t be, all Maths Mistresses are dragons! All mine were anyway.”

Nancy smiled and shook her head reprovingly, Col wiped the board and wrote again,

“Course, if my Maths teacher had looked like you…”

“Behave!”

They both stopped writing as the sound of air being sucked out of the cylinder changed. Col took one breath then passed it on to Nancy, she breathed in once without problem, but on her second breath it cut out. The tank was empty. She looked across at Col who shook his head, his face grim. After a few seconds he wrote again,

“Do you believe in God, Nancy?”

“Yes, you?”

“Yes. Really glad I met you, Nancy, Kathie was a lucky woman.”

“Good to know you, too, Col.”

The two smiled slightly at each other and reached out to hold hands. They both leant back against the cave wall and closed their eyes…

It appears that people wanted to see this post. devil

On the surface two of the instructors swam up to speak to each other, Mark, the senior instructor was despondent,

“It’s a complete mess down there, God only knows what happened, but the entire reef has collapsed. There’s no sign of them.”

The other man, Danny, an older and even more experienced diver nodded. “Thing is, Mark, that turd, Ben, might be right - there’s so much debris they could be dead.”

Mark shook his head, “I refuse to believe that,” he said adamantly, “Col knows these waters better than anyone, if there was a way to survive he’s found it.”

The two prepared to dive again when Danny stopped suddenly, “Not sure of the details,” he said quickly, “But wasn’t there a cave at the base of that reef system? If they’re going to survive that’s a good place to start!”

‘It was actually a fairly peaceful way to die,’ Col thought sleepily, ‘Once you’d accepted that it was going to happen, and were not trying desperately to draw air in to your lungs, when there was only water. It was really quite pleasant, falling asleep in the company of a friend,’ he felt the slight pressure of Nancy's hand in his. The cave was in darkness, he had switched off the torch, however a small amount of light filtered in, through the coral debris and some of the still living coral. ‘Perhaps they would be preserved along with the coral,’ he thought his mind sinking toward unconsciousness as the light was suddenly blocked out.

Col came awake with a start, ‘the light? What could block out the light? There was something swimming just above the cave entrance!’ Quickly, ignoring the burning pressure in his lungs, the almost unbearable need to take a breath, he moved to the cave entrance, Nancy, jolted awake by his sudden movement, joined him. There was someone outside!

Mark looked with despair at the cave entrance, the bulk of the reef appeared to have fallen around it and there was no sign of life. He’d swam round the entrance a number of times, searching for a light, tell-tale bubbles, anything that would show that the missing divers were there. He had seen nothing. With a heavy heart he prepared to surface and give the other three women the bad news about their friend, he’d speak to Col’s parents later tonight. As he was slowly rising something caught the corner of his eye, puzzled he turned round, there was nothing ther….wait, a flash of light! Swimming faster than he’d ever swam before he reached the blocked up cave entrance, the light was inside! He shone his torch inside.

In the cave, suddenly, a powerful light lit up the interior, showing both Col and Nancy, he’d found them! He was just about to surface and announce the fact when he realised something strange, although they were both obviously alive and had seen the light, neither was sucking on a mouthpiece! He swam closer, able to see Col’s face through a chink in the coral blocking the entrance, he was obviously holding his breath.

Mark took a deep breath then took the mouthpiece of his tank out of his mouth and stretched toward the gap in the coral. There was a split-second when he didn’t think it would fit but, with a strength augmented by desperation he managed to push it through.

Inside the cave, Col and Nancy had watched intently as Mark tried to force the mouthpiece through. As it finally fitted Col reached for it and immediately proffered it to Nancy, two quick breaths from her then she passed it to Col. For both of them, that first breath felt like the most wonderful sensation in the world. Smiling at each other, they settled back into their earlier routine with mouthpiece and slate, chatting.

Next little bit! And Jennie? Trust me!

It took another forty five minutes to free Nancy and Col, the coral was packed so tightly across the entrance of the cave that no amount of pulling or tugging by any of the instructors moved it even an inch. In the end they had to use an underwater drill, carried by the Coastguard, before they could shift it. All of this time, Nancy and Col continued sharing the mouthpiece leading to Mark’s tank, when they had exhausted the air in that tank, another was swiftly connected. There wasn’t even space to pass a second mouthpiece through to the two trapped divers, and Mark felt they were exceptionally lucky to have discovered enough space to pass one mouthpiece through.

Eventually, after drilling through the coral for some 20 minutes, a large enough gap was made that the two could escape. They were brought to the surface as quickly as possible, allowing for other safety considerations. A quick check by the Medic on the Coastguard vessel pronounced them both perfectly healthy other than requiring dressings to their hands. They both immediately requested that they go back to the diving boat.

On board, Kathie and the others waited; although they had been told immediately Nancy and Col had been found, they had been unable to go to them. Kathie, in particular was almost dancing with impatience. When the coastguard boat drew alongside almost everyone gathered along the rail to watch the two climb back on board. Nancy appeared first, she had changed out of her wetsuit and had obviously been given some clothing from someone on the coastguard boat. Dressed in jeans and tee-shirt, she was barefoot and had bandages on both hands. Her short, blond hair had almost dried in the sun and her blue eyes were sparkling. She looked around as she reached the deck and caught sight of Kathie. She smiled, the slow, placid smile she always had.

Kathie ducked out of Ruth’s supporting arm and ran across the deck. Oblivious to everyone else in the boat she threw her arms around Nancy,

“I thought I’d lost you!” she said, her voice breaking slightly with emotion.

Nancy returned the hug, stroking the glossy brown head that fitted beneath her own, “You’ll never lose me, Kathie.” she said quietly.

Behind them Col appeared and watched the two women for a few seconds,

“Would you look at that,” he said, apparently to the air, “Two of the best looking women on board, and what happens?”

Kathie looked across at him, her expression darkening slightly, Nancy’s smile grew wider still, she reached out a hand and grabbed Col’s arm, pulling him toward the two women.

“Kathie, I’d like you to meet Col, he saved my life, kept me sane while we were trapped, and is terribly jealous of you!”

Here you go, Jennie, and anyone else that wanted to see Ben get what he deserved!

Seconds later both Ruth and Rosalind appeared to greet their friend, both of them had known and been friendly with Nancy for a very long time, and with Kathie from when she had first joined the Chalet School. With the four women and Col in the centre, most of the rest of the boat, trainees and instructors, gathered around to hear exactly what had happened. Col related how they had come to be trapped and the cause, as he finished speaking all eyes swivelled to look at the one person that had not joined the crowd.

Ben looked across at the silent group with some defiance. In the time it had taken to find and rescue Nancy and Col, he had disappeared below to have a shower and change. Unlike most of the trainees he had dressed and was stood in designer slacks, shirt and expensive trainers - perfect for the late afternoon Australian climate.

“I thought you had surely been killed,” he said sullenly, “I’m glad that is not the case, but from all I’ve heard, it was a genuine mistake, I could not have known about the cave.”

“You were the cause of the accident!” it was Kathie, her temper flaring as she viewed the complacent man protesting his innocence, she stepped forward as though to confront the man.

Col stepped forward and pushed her back, “Kathie, you’re a lady, please allow me.”

He turned to face Ben, shaking his head he said quietly, “Ben, you’re a worm!” he then punched the man in the face.

Ben slid backwards along the deck and slammed into the side, Col stood there, watching him and shaking his hand, the bandages on the hand showed further blood leakage. “Damn,” he said ruefully, “That hurt!”

Nancy stepped forward, shaking her head at Col she merely passed a one word comment, “Men!” she said, her tone amused. She walked across to stand looking down at the man on the deck.

“You not only caused the accident, Ben, you didn’t even think to go for help, instead just looking out for yourself. Don’t know about the rest of you, but that doesn’t sound like the behaviour of a diver.”

She looked round, everyone was agreeing with her, “So I can’t see why you should be on a diver’s boat.”

“What do you mean?” Ben asked quickly, “I’m leaving here as soon as it docks,”

“No you’re not, Ben,” Nancy had suddenly vanished, in her place stood Miss Wilmot, Mathematic Department Head at a large Boarding School, and someone who, though normally a very placid creature, was well able to keep discipline. She turned to one of the crew and requested a life jacket, it was passed across.

“Put it on, Ben,” her tone did not allow thought of refusal and Ben quickly obeyed, “Now, we’re about half a mile out and there are no dangerous currents between here and the shore. I suggest you start swimming.”

Ben swallowed, “You can’t do this, you can’t force me over the side, the Coastguard has gone, suppose I got into trouble?”

Mark stepped forward, “Well, unlike you, we’d make sure you were OK, Ben,” he said, “But you’re not coming back on board.”

Ben looked round the faces, seeing only agreement with Nancy’s actions, he saw a familiar face, “Karen, you’ll help, won’t you?” he pleaded with his wife.

Karen looked across at him, “I don’t know you,” she said flatly.

“Jump into the sea, Ben,” Nancy ordered, “Or I may just forget I’m a lady and throw you in!”

Ben looked round once more but saw no help, he jumped.

What a wonderful few parts to read together. I feel Nancy's punishment for Ben was entirely fitting and still actually very merciful. I bet it felt good to punch him though (Go Col!) I'm guessing there's going to be more trouble for him with Karen though...

I can't see that Ben would get anywhere by trying to press a case. The rest of the people on board could just deny all knowledge - can't see anyone standing up to support him in court.

Next bit! Going out soon, so no more till tonight at the earliest!

Early morning saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson drop off the girls at the driving centre. The course they had booked the girls on lasted the entire day and included both theory and practical. Although it didn’t claim to have it’s trainees ready for their test by the end of the course, it did provide significant instruction and the two friends were in no doubt that, once they returned to Melbourne, all three would be able to pass their test during the next term.

While Miss Annersley was being told of the main hazards to driving in Cambridge - the main one apparently being cyclists - she noted that Miss Wilson was talking to a man in motorbike leathers. She walked over just as Nell finished speaking and looked across,

“Hilda! I’ve just discovered that, if we can stay here until tomorrow, they’ve got some cancellations on a course, we could join it!” Nell smiled.

Hilda raised an eyebrow, “I didn’t think either of us were in need of a refresher course for driving, Nell” she said quickly.

“Not a car, no,” agreed Nell, “But I’m talking about a motorbike riding course!”

There was silence as, in the process of signing in for their course, all three girls turned to hear Miss Annersley’s reply, Hilda glanced behind her at the girls before turning back to face her partner,

“Nell, if you want to learn how to ride a motorbike that’s fine, our schedule is very fluid, we can stay in Cambridge another day or so. I’m sure the girls would appreciate another day driving…” she began, Nell interrupted her,

“Not just for me to learn, Hilda, you too!” Nell said quickly, she continued before her friend had a chance to object, “I’ve thought about this, it makes more sense for us to hire motorbikes for the trip to Scotland.”

“No, Nell!””

“But it’ll just be the two of us, the girls are staying at Center Parcs, and we’ll find it so much easier to travel with bikes, can reach all the more isolated places,”

“No, Nell!”

“Now you don’t want people to think that you’re scared do you, Hilda?” Nell produced the innocent question.

“No, Ne…” Hilda stopped, “Scared?”

“Why yes, Hilda, that’s the only reason I can think of for you refusing.”

Hilda Annersley stared across at her friend, Nell grinned back, “I’m not scared, Nell,” she said eventually, “But it’s hardly dignified is it?”

“Well I thought you had got over that,” Nell replied, “I thought, being in the Real World, you were keen to embrace all new experiences. After all, that’s what you’re always encouraging the girls to do!”

There was silence for quite some time, then, “I hate you Nell Wilson!”

Nell’s grin grew even wider, “No you don’t, Hilda, you love me, you told me so yourself!”

“Hah!”

“I’ll book the course for both of us tomorrow then, shall I?”

“Oh good grief!”

“Knew you’d come round, Hilda!”

Next bit.

After booking the course the two women had to show they were licensed to drive motorbikes, luckily, when Madge Russell had arranged the appropriate papers for all those transferring over from the fictional world, she had included licenses for both cars and motorbikes. Miss Annersley did spare a thought to wish that Madge had not been quite so thorough!

Afterwards they travelled back into the centre of Cambridge, leaving the car in one of the ‘park and ride’ car parks. Walking along the main streets they followed instructions given them by Catherine Barber, Maths Mistress.

“You do realise, Hilda,” Nell began, “That if we manage to buy all the books the CBBer’s have requested, it’ll take us over the weight limit for the flight home?”

Hilda smiled, turning down a little side street and walking with a church to her left, “We can always arrange for the books to be packaged and sent to Melbourne, Nell,” she said, “I think the idea is, that we’re more likely to find the books than anyone else!”

“Don’t know why,” Nell grumbled, “After all, until entering the Real World we hadn’t read any of them!”

They stopped outside a small shop, “Is this it?” Hilda asked doubtfully, the shop seemed to be far smaller than had been described.

“Must be, apparently it’s much bigger once you get inside,” Nell said, opening the door as she spoke. The two women entered the shop; speaking to the woman sat next to a till, they discovered that there was a large number of books upstairs, plus some hardback Chalet School books in a box downstairs, the woman pointed. The friends looked then decided to go upstairs first.

Although somewhat cramped looking, the upstairs held a surprisingly large number of books, they both started to flick through them,

“Hmmm, first edition of School at the Chalet,” Hilda murmured, “I think that’s on Catherine’s list,”

“Have you seen the price?” Nell sounded scandalised, “Be far cheaper if we just invited her and Madge to dinner so Madge can tell her what really happened!”

“Not sure if that will be enough,” Hilda replied absently, “Oh, here’s a copy of the book I make a first appearance in. Think I was mentioned about three times in total, but still!”

“At least your first term was mentioned,” Nell replied, “I just appeared out of nowhere in my second term, when Elizaveta was at the School. Plus, let’s not forget that you had an entire book just about you, not EBD, but close enough!”

Nell turned to look at the top shelf and suddenly grabbed for a book, “I take it all back!” she said breathlessly, “Did you know about this?” she brandished a book in front of Hilda, A Chalet School Headmistress, “This is about me!” she said triumphantly, flicking through the pages, “About when you were off,” she read a small amount, “Hey that didn’t happen!”

Hilda looked over, “It was published after you escaped to the Real World,” she said softly, “So didn’t affect the characters, the one about me was published while I was still there!”

“Pity, still it’ll be a laugh to read it,” Nell continued flicking through the pages quickly. Hilda smiled and went back downstairs to ask about shipping rates to Melbourne.

Back upstairs Nell continued reading; lost in the book she jumped slightly when an unknown voice said, “I wonder, could you reach up and get a copy of that book down for me?”

Nell turned to the young woman standing next to her, smiling, “Of course,” she said, reaching up to bring down another copy down, “They should provide steps really, I’m Nell, by the way,”

“Sophie,” the woman replied, “So nice to see other woman with an interest in these books!”

“Oh you’d be surprised at just how much my friend and I are interested in them!” Nell grinned.

At that moment Hilda reappeared, unable to see the other woman, who had just crouched down to look at some books on the bottom shelf, she spoke, “Nell Wilson, are you going to be reading about yourself for the rest of the morning? Just buy the thing, it’ll make good bedtime reading,”

“Oh all right, Hilda,” Nell returned quickly, “Think I should really get a copy given to me though!”

They both stopped as the woman, Sophie stood up, looking from one to the other she swallowed sharply, “You’re Nell Wilson,” she said, pointing at Nell, “And she called you Hilda, meaning Hilda Annersley. Oh my God!” She gave a slight hiccup and slid gracefully to the floor.

Hilda looked across at Nell, “If this keeps on for much longer,” she said, “We’ll be given our own public health warning!”

This is, of course, as brilliant as ever - love the idea of Hilda as a biker, what I would really like to see is Nell buting a GSXR1000 and taking Hilda on the pillion, (for non bikers - top speed @ 186 mph)

Naturally, this was the first drabble I went to, question is, where on earth do I go now?

Next!

The friends managed to revive Sophie and took her along to a nearby coffee house, it took some time, but eventually they were able to persuade her that she wasn’t dreaming or losing her mind. They treated her to lunch as well and, when she left, she had both of their autographs inside her brand new book. Standing outside the restaurant they waved good bye, she had to leave because of meeting someone at the station.

“I don’t know, Nell,” remarked Hilda, “Do you think that we should use pseudonyms while in the UK?”

“You mean in case anyone else recognises us, you mean?” Nell replied, she turned to a young man selling river rides, “No thanks, not interested,” then turned back to her partner, “I don’t think so, I mean that was an unusual situation, anywhere else and our names would have meant nothing. I told you, we’re not interested! I don’t care how good a deal it is!” This last to a persistent seller.

The two walked along the road a little further, coming to a bridge crossing the river Cam, they stopped there to admire the view, while there they were interrupted three more times by students attempting to sell them trips on the river, by this time both women had had enough. When the next one walked over to extol the virtues of river trips the two looked at each other.

“You had first refusal with the Earl, Hilda,” Nell said grimly, “It’s my turn.”

Hilda nodded slightly and leant back on the bridge, waiting to enjoy the show.

Nell Wilson turned to the young man, “You appear to have trouble hearing plain English, young man.” she began, and her voice was deceptively quiet, “might I ask where you are from?”

The student looked surprised at the question, “I’m from Rochdale,” he said, “I’m sure you’ll enjoy the ride on the river, ladies,” he smiled slightly.

Nell nodded, “And you are a student at one of the many colleges of Cambridge university?”

“Yes, but…”

“But, you either have a serious, unresolved hearing problem, or the entrance criteria for Cambridge has dropped considerably since my day and you are unable to comprehend a simple English sentence. Both my friend and I have repeatedly told you and your colleagues that we are not interested in a trip on the river. We are also, most definitely, not interested in propelling ourselves along the water in an unstable flat bottomed boat with nothing but a long stick. Should we ever change our minds it will be because we are in Venice and can pay for the services of a professional gondolier.”

Nell stopped for a moment and smiled, “Now, does that answer your question, or would you like me to repeat it in words of one syllable? Take your time, please, while my friend here is the English expert she doesn't have my expertise with regard to these words. I have a vast repository of words, many of them archaic and obscene, that I will be pleased to share with you, if you don‘t stop bothering us!”

The man gulped slightly and stepped back, “I-I-I’ll go and bother someone else,” he said faintly.

“Wise decision.”

I generally don't have problems - then again, I tend to be wearing something from Methsoc - aka the kings of the upper river Very Happy - or otherwise Cantab related.

And I would have loved to see them...

Another excellent episode! Very glad that I got their autographs. Wonder how much they'd go for on ebay? (Although no one would believe they were real autographs, hmph.) I'd love to see Hilda and Nell dealing with being crashed into by screaming teenage hysterics while punting...maybe the prefects could take them out? Please?

*Grin!*

The two friends spent the afternoon exploring the city; they also managed to get to look around a number of the colleges. Late afternoon saw them making there way back to the driving instruction centre to pick up the girls. All three had enjoyed the course and booked themselves onto a similar course for the next day. The five returned to their hotel, intending to have a meal in the restaurant. However, as they entered the hotel, the receptionist said they had a visitor. She disappeared to the lounge only to return minutes later with Andrew St John!

All three girls greeted him excitedly, he hugged both Alison and Carol, however when Louise walked over he reached out a hand,

“I know I said I wasn’t starting back at Cambridge for another week,” he said softly, staring directly into Louise’s eyes, “But I really wanted to see you again. I hope you don’t mind.”

Louise smiled slightly and stretched out her hand to brush his, “I’m really pleased to see you, Andrew,” she said. “Are you alright now? How’s your head?”

Andrew lifted a hand to touch a bump on his head, “A little sore,” he admitted, “But no real damage. It’s really difficult to hurt a law student, you know!” He smiled at Louise then turned to look across at Hilda and Nell.

“I understand you are Louise’s family?” he said a little shyly, “My name is Andrew St John, how do you do?”

Both friends shook his hand.

“We’d like to thank you for all you did yesterday, Andrew” this from Hilda, “The girls told us of how you tried to help.”

Andrew smiled, “I didn’t do a great deal,” he said, shaking his head, “They managed perfectly well themselves! I um, would like to ask Louise out to dinner, if that’s OK with you?”

Nell smiled, a twinkle in her eye, “Well, Andrew, she standing right next to you, go ahead!”

Later, after a meal in the restaurant, Alison and Carol walked into town to a nightclub. Hilda and Nell went out for a walk along the river.

“Not something we’ve ever had to deal with before, Hilda,” Nell spoke apropos of nothing. However Hilda had obviously been thinking along the same lines,

“I known, Nell, we’ll just have to watch and wait. Andrew seems like a pleasant companion, I don’t think he’ll try to hurt Louise.”

“He’d better not!” Nell replied grimly.

They walked back to their hotel room, while Nell was reading through some leaflets describing the motorbike course they were attending the following day, Hilda retrieved their laptop from their luggage and logged-on to check their emails, she laughed,

“Sounds as though Ruth and the others are coping well and having a good time,” she said, she passed the laptop across,

From: Ruth and co.
To: Hilda and Nell

Hope you had a good journey and are enjoying your holiday! Everything is going well here, the Chemistry Lab refurbishment is almost finished and they’ve made a start on the foundations for the new boarding houses. The park is going well, Ros says it should be ready by midway through the term for the girls to start visiting, earlier if they want to participate in the conservation side.

We’ve also been enjoying ourselves - we’re halfway through a scuba diving course - going well and we should all get good passes (Of course, considering our professions!) We’ve also made some new friends including one of the instructors and another trainee.

Anyway, hope to hear from you soon, make sure you’re having a relaxing time!

“Are we having a relaxing time, Hilda?” Nell asked with some amusement.

“Of course we are, Nell,” Hilda replied promptly, she typed for a few minutes then showed the result to her partner.

From: Hilda and Nell.
To: Ruth, Rosalind, Nancy and Kathie.

Thanks for your email, good flight to Singapore and a fairly early night; some of us went exploring the next day before the flight to London. Have managed to see a few old friends and made some new ones. Made the acquaintance of an Earl, no less! The girls met a few young men and one of them has invited Louise out to dinner. Nell and I are on a motorbike course tomorrow!

Will be moving on to Centre Parcs in Nottingham after that, the girls will be staying there, but Nell and I plan to travel on to Pitlochry for a few days!

Take care.

Nell read the email, “Hmmm, very clever, Hilda,” she said, “You’ve told the truth but not the whole truth. I’d hate to allow a lawyer to see that!”

Hilda smiled, “They want to think we’re having a stress free time, Nell, if that means telling them only part of the story, well so be it!”

Well Xan, he might be just round the corner or sitting at the other end of the row in the computer lab wondering why you are there yeebling to yourself again!!

Lesley, thank you again. More wonderful posts - loved Nell's putdown, wish I had her sarcastic ability sometimes! Also love both the understated emails - think it will be rather enlightening when they all meet up again - cos I'm sure there are more dramatic events to come!

Next bit - and you can't have Andrew - he's for Louise!

The following day all five drove over to the driving centre; Louise had returned to the hotel after one am, having obviously had a wonderful time out with Andrew. She had swapped telephone numbers and addresses with him and planned to see him again. Neither Hilda nor Nell had mentioned the fact that they had both remained awake until certain that she had returned.

The course itself was interesting; although termed a refresher course, the instructor explained at the beginning that he was not expecting anyone to have any knowledge, instead ensuring that everyone started from scratch. In fact, the very first thing that was necessary was ensuring everyone had on the correct equipment for biking. While some people had their own bike, helmet and leathers, a number had appeared in the same situation as Hilda and Nell. The centre had a number of bikes for use by students and also helmets and leathers and boots for hire.

When another student queried the need for wearing biking leathers the instructor, Alan Short, smiled, removing his jacket and rolling up one sleeve he showed all the students a large scar on his left forearm.

“I got that at the age of 17 while riding my first bike - just a little moped, top speed 25mph.” He said ruefully, “At the time I was wearing a helmet - it’s the law, after all - but no other protection. I broke the arm in two places and needed three operations, including skin grafting from my thigh, before it healed. Two years later, I was involved in an accident when riding a 500cc Triumph, going about 50mph, I was wearing full leathers and got away with just bruising. That answer your question?”

The students all nodded, somewhat subdued at his mention of accidents, however everyone managed to find clothing to fit. In the changing room Nell was ready first, dressed all in black, with her helmet held casually under one arm she grinned across at her partner. Hilda finished fastening her boots before returning her friend’s grin,

“Nell, you look like a pirate,” she smiled.

“I feel wonderful,” Nell replied, “I’m going to have to get myself some of this equipment!” She looked across, critically, at her partner, “You, however, look as though you’re wearing fancy dress!”

“Thank you, Nell,” Hilda replied indignantly, “It’s probably because I’ve been tricked into attending this course!”

“You’re going to love it, Hilda. Trust me!”

“Why do those words fill me with foreboding?” Hilda smiled across at her partner and, suddenly, managed to look almost as piratical as Nell. “Come along, we’ve still to learn how to ride the darn things!”

The course was, surprisingly as far as Hilda Annersley was concerned, enjoyable. The class were all give instructions in basic care of their bike and in how to operate it. They also had the opportunity to ride it within the confines of the centre before heading out onto the roads. The bikes were surprisingly easy to handle although a few students, Hilda among them, made the mistake of not balancing the bike properly when coming to a halt. When Hilda did this, the 400cc machine decided to topple over onto its side, taking Hilda with it! Racing over to help, Nell was the first to reach her partner,

“Hilda, are you OK?”

“Of course I am, Nell, I just love having half a ton of inert metal lying on top of me!” Miss Annersley’s tone was rather sharp.

“Ah, silly question,” Nell said, trying desperately to control a grin that threatened to engulf her entire face. “I’ll just help pull this off,” she reached for the bike just as the instructor appeared.

Once they had righted the bike and helped Hilda to stand, the instructor told Nell to go back to her own bike, he stayed to have a few words with Hilda,

“When I was 19 I got my first big bike,” he said, amusement flickering in his eyes, “Now I’m 6ft 2 and weigh about 14 stone, but at 19, although I’d completed growing up, I hadn’t started to fill out. I think I was less than 10 stone! The bike was delivered to my home address and I rushed outside to try it out. The bike did exactly the same as your one, trapping me underneath. It was 40 minutes before anyone heard my shouts!”

Hilda smiled slightly, “You think Alan, that I’m not strong enough to handle the bike?” She said this with an air of resignation in her tones.

Alan shook his head, “No, just that you need a different technique. I’ve known of people a lot smaller and far weaker, who can ride the large bikes without any trouble, they just have to know how. I’ll show you.”

The rest of the course proceeded smoothly, even once out on the roads everything went well. At the end of the day, with Alan proclaiming that everyone had passed the course, Nell turned to Hilda, “Well?” she said.

Hilda smiled, knowing the question her friend was asking, “Alright Nell, we can bike to Scotland,” she said gently.

Wonderful as always. Only you could make me see Hilda Annersley as a pirate, Lesley Kiss

But I'm a bit worried about the motorbiking. It's so easy to have an accident - what's the betting that one of them ends up in a near-fatal crash and we spend days fretting over whether she'll recover from her coma Confused

Hooray that made staying at work until 8pm worth it! Thank you Lesley! Wonderful to see how Hilda's attitude changed and loved Nell looking like a pirate but Hilda like she was in fancy dress!

The real question is: will Hilda and Nell join the Hell's Angels?

When I get a motor trike, I'm going to form an organisation called Hell's Grannies. The idea is that we bike up to unsuspecting young louts, hit them with our handbags and bike off at top speed. Anyone want to join?

I know I'm severely late to this, but I've spent the past few days (no exaggeration, except of course for exam breaks...) reading this, and what's in the archives. I don't think I can possibly say how great it is, let it be enough to say that my family think I'm insane for laughing and crying at a computer screen.

Well! Lula - welcome to the board! Am seriously impressed that you read all 3 previous installments with yibble! Jennie - love the image!

Melbourne

After the trials and excitements of the scuba diving on Wednesday, the rest of the week seemed almost tame by comparison. Nancy had insisted that the four complete the course, indeed she seemed keener than ever following her ordeal. On the Thursday, when they appeared for the dive, they were welcomed enthusiastically by all the instructors and trainees. Looking round Kathie noticed that Karen was there too, and walked across to say hello,

“How’s things, Karen?”

Karen smiled slightly, she appeared somewhat pale and had dark circles under her eyes, “I’ve left him, Kathie.”

“Left Ben?” Kathie was shocked, Nancy seeing her partner’s face came over and asked what the problem was, on being told she immediately turned to Karen,

“Oh Karen I’m so sorry, I never expected anything like that to happen!”

Karen smiled slightly and reached out to touch the Maths Head’s arm, “Don’t be,” she said with authority, “The events yesterday just gave me the push I needed. Things have been bad between us for some time but seeing how he acted yesterday, when he could have been responsible for the deaths of two people.” She smiled again, “Let’s just say I saw him in his true colours, and it wasn’t a pretty sight!”

At that moment Mark appeared, “Good to see you Kathie, Karen” he smiled, “Nancy, your return today has just gained Col a great deal of money!”

Nancy Wilmot looked puzzled and the Chief Instructor continued, “Some of the others bet that, after yesterday, you’d not want to continue…”

“While I said you’d be here same as always!” Col himself appeared, grinning, “And I’ve just won a ton of dosh. Come out to dinner tonight, help me celebrate.”

Nancy looked a little worried but Col continued, “Invite includes Kathie of course!” he said, winking at Kathie as he said this, “Oh and you Karen, if you’d like?”

Karen made to refuse but stopped herself, smiling she replied, “Thanks Col, I’d love to!”

“Good, that’s settled then, now get on the boat the three of you, or we’ll be late!”

The afternoon’s dives went perfectly; as there was now an odd number of people Karen joined up with Nancy and Kathie, she did extremely well and, by the end of the lesson seemed to have lost some of the dark circles under her eyes. They left after arranging where to meet in Melbourne for dinner with Col and some of the other instructors.

That evening, in the Staff House at the Real Chalet School, Ruth sat in her room, the largest, by virtue of her position, watching TV. Nancy and Kathie had left earlier for their meal with Col and Rosalind was down at the hospital. She had invited Ruth along but Ruth, not wanting to intrude on her friend’s happiness, had claimed a slight headache and told her friend she was having an early night. She looked round with a slight sigh, ‘the rooms were far superior to anything the mistresses had had when in the original chalet school,’ she thought with satisfaction, ‘en-suite facilities, enough space for TV, Hi-Fi, fridge and computer, as well as room to host anything up to half a dozen people before it felt crowded. And if Hilda was serious when she said that a fully equipped kitchen was going to be built, well that would make it almost perfect.’

“So why do I feel miserable then?” she said out loud, “I’ll tell you why, because you’re jealous. Jealous of what Nancy and Kathie have, and, mainly, jealous of what Rosalind is feeling for Geoff Stevens.”

The words said out loud forced Ruth to think deeply about them, her friendship with Rosalind had never been as powerful as that between Hilda and Nell, and certainly not as charged as that between Nancy and Kathie even before they moved across to the Real World. It had been a far lighter comradeship, one almost borne of necessity, among the senior people in the chalet school they had been thrown together most often. After a time, Ruth had come to see beneath the hard, sarcastic exterior that Rosalind showed the world, to the funny and amusing companion hidden there.

In her turn, Rosalind had seen what no one else, not even Hilda, with her famed insight, had been able to detect. Ruth, the English Department Head, felt that her qualifications, experience and abilities, were not good enough. Hilda had more qualifications and experience, she always knew the answers whenever any English language or literature question was asked and her classes were wonderful. Ruth had never allowed anyone else, and especially not Hilda herself, to know just how much she was intimidated by the Headmistress.

Had Hilda known Ruth was sure she would have acted to dispel Ruth’s fears, but that would have meant admitting there was a problem, and she did not want to do that. Funnily enough, what finally caused her to start to see past her feelings of inadequacy, was the realisation that, for the two weeks when Elinor had attempted to change the story line, she, Ruth, had been the most senior person with respect to English. She had given orders and advice to Hilda Annersley in her role as Junior English mistress, and been the one everyone else had turned to whenever there was a question. And she’d been able to cope without any problems!

Now, the situation had resolved itself, during the four months when Hilda was Deputy Head and Head of English, she had shown Ruth exactly how the English Head should act, that example, coupled with her new confidence, was such that, when Hilda was made Headmistress once more, Ruth was able to bring a far greater dimension to her role of English Department Head. Hilda still taught classes, but Ruth was the one that any queries went to, and Ruth was now sufficiently confident in her own abilities that, if there was a problem she couldn’t answer, she had no difficulty with asking the Head. Ruth smiled at this, truth be told, it was likely that Hilda’s words about Ruth being Headmistress material could also be due to Ruth’s growing confidence in her own abilities.

“So why do I feel jealous of Rosalind being with Geoff, then?” she said out loud, once more returning to her original question, “I think because I don’t want to lose the person that first saw the problems I had, and tried to help.”

“You’ll never do that, Ruth,” Rosalind’s voice suddenly cut across Ruth’s musings, and Ruth spun round to see her friend standing in the doorway. “I did knock, but you can’t have heard, so I came in. And I’m glad that I did,”

Rosalind walked over and knelt beside her friend’s chair, her brown eyes soft and thoughtful, “Ruth, just because I’ve found Geoff, doesn’t mean I want to lose you. You’re my closest friend, that means a lot to me.”

Ruth smiled, “I know Ros, I’m just feeling sorry for myself, that’s all!”

“Well I’m not surprised, moping in here,” the slight sarcastic tone was balanced by the light in Rosalind Moore’s eyes, “Geoff has asked if you will please join us for dinner, Ruth,” she said gently, “He said he wants to know everything about me, and that includes my friends,”

A deeper voice from the doorway spoke, “The last thing I want, Ruth, is to try and isolate Ros from her friends,” Geoff Stevens smiled, “You are the reason she is the person she is. A person I may just be falling in love with.”

Ruth blushed slightly, “Well, put like that,” she began, “how can I refuse?” She stood up to join them.

Lovely bit there, Lesley - I really enjoy hearing about the slightly less prominent characters, and you've made Ruth's situation so realistic. Still want to know how the others are getting on, though!

That was really beautiful. What an insight into Ruth's friendship with Rosalind & relationship with Hilda and how thoughtful of Rosalind & Geoff to realise how she would be feeling.

Even though it's about "minor" characters, Lesley, I think that was one of the most moving RCS episodes you've ever written. Wonderful.

Totally agree - I had tears in my eyes ... quite unexpected and brilliantly observed.
Lesley, my dear, you seem to have a knack of getting under the skin of your characters Wink

(So, are Col and Karen going to get together then? Cos if so, there should be any number of wedding scenes coming our way!! Col & Kaz, Andy & Lou, Ros & Geoff ....... any chance of Ruth finding someone in the meantime??)

The following morning, while Ruth Derwent was sat at the Head’s desk, working through some correspondence and reports, she had a visitor. A knock on the door heralded the arrival of Madge Russell.

“Morning Ruth, do you mind me interrupting?” Madge smiled across at the Senior Mistress.

“Oh, Madge, how lovely to see you,” Ruth smiled, genuinely happy to see the owner of the School and Chief Executive of Real Chalet School Industries, “Please, come in, I’ll make us a drink, tea or coffee?”

“Tea please,” Madge replied, settling herself at the oval table. She looked around appreciatively at her former office. After a few minutes Ruth appeared with a full teapot, two cups, some milk and a biscuit barrel, she placed them on the table.

“How is Joey?”

“Very well, thanks for asking, Ruth,” Madge smiled, though her eyes darkened slightly on thinking of her younger sister. “She has been home for more than a week now, and Jack is looking after her. She’s had a few nightmares but seems to be coping with them.”

“I’m glad, please give her my love.”

Ruth looked across at her visitor, seeing Madge looking round the office she smiled,

“Any regrets, Madge? About giving it up I mean?”

Madge shook her head, “Not really Ruth, I really enjoy all I’m involved with in business now. It seems that I have a knack for business, in a way that shouldn’t be a surprise, after all the original chalet school was a very viable concern for a number of years. Unfortunately I always put that down to Jem’s expertise, rather than my own!”

“Elinor’s influence, I expect.” Ruth said with some decision.

Madge sipped her tea then spoke again, “And what of yourself, Ruth? Is everything going well here?”

Ruth nodded, “Everything is going fine,” she said quickly, “We’re all working well in the mornings and have the rest of the day to enjoy ourselves. It’s the others really, I’ve not done very much…”

“Oh no, in the same way that when Hilda is here, she doesn’t do very much!” Madge replied dryly, “I’ve heard some very good things about you, Ruth Derwent, from both Hilda and Nell!”

“From Nell?” Ruth was intrigued, and more than a little pink with embarrassment and pleasure.

“Yes, Nell mentioned that, when the appraisals are due in, the end of the year, she will be recommending you for promotion. She mentioned it because she said it felt strange recommending someone for promotion to her own post!”

The English Head smiled again, “That’s nice to know,” she said rather quietly, “But it’s not likely to happen. I cannot see either Hilda or Nell retiring any time soon.”

“Nooooo, but at least, if anything untoward were to happen, I’d know I could promote you to either Deputy Head, or even Headmistress without a qualm.” Madge smiled again at the woman opposite. She finished her tea and nodded when Ruth asked if she would like another, while Ruth was pouring out a second cup she spoke again.

“I understand that the four of you will be away for the weekend?”

“Yes, we’ve got our final diving lesson this afternoon, then we have an early evening flight to Sydney, we’ll be spending the weekend there, returning Sunday afternoon.” She explained about the gift Hilda and Nell had left the four.

“Ah, I see now why you wanted me to cover this weekend,” Madge said quickly.

“If it’s not too much trouble, Madge,” Ruth began, “There’s not much to do, but the contractors want to finish the Chemistry Lab refurbishment and I think there’ll be some ecologist looking over the plans for our nature park.”

Madge smiled, “No problem at all,” she said quickly, “My pleasure! Enjoy yourself in Sydney.” She drained her cup and stood up, “Well I must be going, I’m meeting my niece, Daisy, for lunch. She has a new member of staff starting,”

“Anyone we know?”

“Well she’s a CBBer, name of Alex Farmer, she’s starting in the Pharmacy Department and will be attending Monash to complete her studies. So I imagine that any of the Staff that are on-line frequently will know her. Anyway, I must go, see you next week!”

Next bit - more to come later!

The evening after the motorbike course saw all five out in Cambridge for a meal, the plan was to leave for CenterParcs first thing the next morning. After the meal Hilda and Nell had planned to return to their hotel, however the girls persuaded them to go to a night club. The night club in question appeared to be very popular, and extremely selective as to who was admitted. In the queue, Hilda and Nell watched as the three burly bouncers on the door accepted or rejected people, almost randomly.

“Have you seen the size of that bouncer?” Nell said, sotto voice to Hilda and the others, “6ft 4 if he’s an inch, and built like a brick sh…..out house!” She changed the word on registering Hilda’s eyes upon her!

There did seem to be certain criteria, no one looking, or appearing to be under eighteen was admitted and there seemed to be a ban on those wearing scruffy clothing, smart wear was essential. In addition, the bouncers seemed to have an upper age limit, turning away anyone appearing to be in their late thirties. Hilda mentioned this to Alison, but she seemed confident that they would be able to bluff their way past.

“You’ve notice the other criteria they seem to have?” Nell whispered to her partner, “They’re turning away any girls who appear grossly overweight!”

“Oh well, you can always wait back at the hotel then, Nell!” Hilda responded quickly, “We can’t all have a size ten figure!”

Nell glared across at her partner with narrowed eyes, “And you’ve just been waiting months to be able to say that, haven’t you?” she hissed, “For your information, I’m the correct weight for my height, size 12 - 14 is normal, and it’s muscle not fat!”

Hilda grinned.

A few minutes later they reached the bouncers, Alison, Louise and Carol were ushered through without problem, then the bouncer looked over at Hilda and Nell,

“We operate within an age range here ladies,” he said, somewhat bored, “Ages 18 to 35 are acceptable, can I ask your ages?”

Nell poked Hilda in the ribs to stop her correcting the bouncer’s English, still smarting about the weight comment Nell turned to look at him, “Last birthday I was 98,” she said flatly.

Hilda looked over at her partner and smiled, she looked at the bouncer, “And I was 100, but I don’t think I look older than her. What do you think?”

There was silence for a time, the bouncer swallowed slightly, registering the two pairs of eyes on him, one pair blue-grey, the other grey. All of a sudden he felt extremely vulnerable. He swallowed again, “Right,” he said, “No problem here then, you can go on through!”

Inside the three girls were waiting, they did not seem surprised that their Guardians had been admitted!

Inside the night club it was all in darkness, with laser lights piercing the gloom, until the inner doors were opened there was hardly any noise, but once they had gone through the sound was deafening. There seemed to be hundreds, thousands of people, all moving to the same throbbing, insistent beat. Within seconds it seemed that the three girls had been swallowed up into the gloom, Hilda looked across at Nell,

“Did you want to dance?” she yelled, for once her normal tones failing to pierce through the noise.

Nell Wilson looked out onto the dance floor, “You have got to be joking!” she yelled back, “They all look as though they’re having seizures!” She glanced round and spied the bar in one corner, “Fancy a drink?” she said.

Hilda nodded and they made their way over to the bar, after fighting their way through crowds of people, Nell finally managed to find two bar stools for them and order two drinks. After the first swallow she leant across to Hilda,

“No chance of me having too much to drink here, then, Tastes as though they’ve only shown the glass the alcohol, not poured any in it!”

Hilda nodded, smiling slightly, “Must be one of the many ways they make their money,” she observed.

They sat there for a while, watching the crowds around them,

“So, in the last fifty years or so, Nell,” Hilda remarked, “Have dancing and music changed a great deal?”

Nell considered, “Different planet, Hilda,” she said eventually. They watched for a little longer, sipping their, not very, alcoholic drinks, both of them noticed that a few of the people didn’t appear to be dancing at all, instead they were standing or sitting in dark corners. Every so often a dancer would wander nonchalantly over to speak to them, some money would change hands and the dancer would come away clutching a few pills.

“Is that what I think it is?“ Hilda said grimly,

Nell nodded, “If you think it’s drugs then yes, I believe so. And the management don’t care, look,“ She pointed to another bouncer, directly behind the drug dealer, watching the proceedings with interest but doing nothing to stop it.

Both women sighed, although naïve about some things in the twenty-first century, they had checked up about the drug problem after John Coates’ lecture at Melbourne Airport. The Internet had been very explicit about the dangers. Both Hilda and Nell kept a close eye out for their three, not wanting any of them to be ensnared. They were interrupted by a group of young, very drunk men who had wandered up to the bar.

“Now what have we here?” one of them leant over to breath alcoholic fumes into Hilda’s face, “Aren’t you a bit old to be in here, darling?”

“You have no idea!” Hilda remarked dryly, she looked across at the youth then continued, “Don’t tell anyone,” she said as quietly as possible, considering the noise, “But my friend and I are here undercover!”

The youth, he looked about 16 years old, suddenly appeared to sober up completely,

“U-u-undercover?” he stuttered,

Hilda nodded, her face impassive, “Now you’ll not say anything, will you?”

“N-n-no of course not,” the youth backed away so fast he almost tripped over himself.

Nell leant over, “Undercover?” she asked.

Hilda looked up at the roof, “We’re not out in the open, Nell!” she said, deadpan.

There were a few minutes silence between the two, then suddenly they were both surprised by one of the barmen, the one who had served their drinks, appearing in front of them, he seemed rather flustered, “Oh ladies,” he smiled, “It appears that the dispensers on the alcohol were faulty, you did not get a full pub measure of spirit when you ordered your drinks. Please allow me.” He had in his hand a bottle of vodka and a bottle of scotch and proceeded to add a generous portion to their glasses.

“Wouldn’t want anyone saying we were trying to cheat the customers now, would we?” The barman had a sickly sweet smile on his face.

Nell looked across, grinning, “Good result,” she said, “Now, what about that?” she inclined her head toward the drug dealers.

“Any ideas?” Hilda asked.

“One perhaps, walk with me,” they both stood up and wandered over so that they were closer to the bouncer. As though carrying on a conversation Nell spoke, “Well all I know is that there’s a raid scheduled for sometime soon, seems there have been a number of complaints about this place,”

“What sort of complaints?” Hilda replied, watching as the bouncer appeared to stiffen and was obviously listening,

“Oh, that the management allow drug dealing. The police are going to shut the place down, revoke their license, should imagine a number of people, both management and security, will be going to jail.”

Both women watched as the bouncer suddenly ran off, they watched him disappear through a door marked Private - Staff Only. A short time later the DJ stopped the music for an announcement. A man’s voice came onto the PA system to declare that, in accordance with health and safety, and to ensure all patrons could enjoy their dancing without the dangers of illegal substances, all people thought to be supplying pills were to be ejected. Hilda and Nell watched without comment as a large number of security personnel appeared and quickly grabbed all the dealers. They were thrown out of the night club without ceremony.

Much later, close to two in the morning, all five were making their way back to the hotel. The three girls were discussing the difference in the night club, Alison turned to the two older women, “It was a far better time, this evening,” she said, smiling, “Last night they’d obviously got different bar staff on duty, the drinks were so watered down!”

“Plus getting rid of all the pill sellers was excellent!” Carol said enthusiastically, “I was next to the manager just after he made that announcement, he said the place is going to be clean from now on. He’s not going to jail for anyone!”

Hilda and Nell just smiled at each other.

Here you go!

The next morning they were not away quite as early as they had originally planned, however, as they only had about one hundred miles to drive, there was no urgency. Hilda and Nell planned to stay with the girls over the weekend then travel to Scotland on the Monday. They would return to CentreParcs the following Monday. After packing the people carrier and settling the hotel bill, they set out a little after eleven. Miss Annersley took the wheel and they left Cambridge and moved on toward the A1 without many problems.

They stopped on the way to buy supplies - as well as breakfasts the lodges had cooking facilities if they did not want to eat out. Arriving at the Centre Parcs resort a little after half one, they unloaded their luggage at the four bedroomed lodge they had booked. As Hilda and Nell were not staying all the time they took one bedroom to share while the girls each had their own room.

Once unpacked they set out to explore their surroundings, like all Centre Parcs resorts this one was set in the middle of unspoilt forest. Once any cars etc had been unloaded they had to be driven back to the car park near the entrance, within the complex only walking and cycling were allowed. They all decided they would try out the swimming pool first; as well as a baby pool, there was a main pool set out as a beach, the two older women settled beside the pool here intending only to relax, however before long they were both being pestered to try out the adult Rapids. As they got to the top, in the roof of the complex, they listened to the girls’ descriptions of the twists and turns,

“Hope you have more appropriate swim wear than the first time you tried surfing Nell,” the Head whispered mischievously.

Nell Wilson smiled, “Never made the mistake of wearing a bikini when surfing again, Hilda,” she replied, “But surprised to see you here, I mean it’s hardly dignified, is it?”

Hilda sighed, “I think you must be an evil influence, Nell,” she said mournfully, “Certainly since being in the Real World you appear to have done your best to ensure my dignity is attacked at every opportunity!”

“I consider it my duty, Hilda,” Nell replied gravely, a distinct twinkle in her eye.

By this time they had both reached the front of the queue and both dived in!

Much later, exhausted, bruised and happy, they all returned to their lodge to get showered and changed. No one particularly wanted to go far for the evening so, after cooking some pizzas they settled down in the lounge for the evening.

“Nell and I will be going on to Scotland Monday morning,” Hilda began, “So perhaps tonight we can discuss a little about your plans for the future!”

The five spent some time discussing options, it was with some satisfaction that Hilda and Nell heard that all three wanted to continue their education. As all three had enough money held in trust that they did not have to work, and indeed Louise’s fortune took her into the realm of the ‘ultra-rich’ the two schoolmistresses felt some satisfaction that they all wanted to learn more. Louise had already expressed an interest in History, in the last two terms she had been working with the History Department with a view to attending university. She hadn’t made up her mind whether it would be in Australia or England.

Alison had decided she wanted a further year at the School and wanted to enrol as an Adult, she was interested in Science, particularly Biology. Carol also wanted to stay on as an Adult, her ambition was to train and qualify as a vet and she knew she need very high qualifications. When all three had detailed their wishes, and Hilda and Nell had agreed with them, there was a short silence, this was broken by Louise suddenly speaking,

“We’re really sorry that none of us are interested in English or Chemistry,” she said quietly.

Hilda and Nell smiled at each other before Hilda spoke, “That means nothing, Louise, all that’s important is that you are doing something that you want to do, that will inspire you. We don’t need you to copy us!”

Nell continued, “Any Guardian, any parent, wants only the best for their children, we want you to enjoy your life, not do something purely out of a sense of duty.”

“Now, Louise, what universities have you looked at?" Hilda put in, "Have you considered many in England? Do you know the entrance criteria?”

The conversations continued for a further hour or so, after which the five sat playing board games until bed.

Next bit - just a little - with thanks to Ellie.

Am seriously depressed about the England result - bloody extra time!

The following day, leaving the girls attempting archery, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson travelled into town to look at hiring motorbikes. Once they had discovered a hire company they had to choose the bike.

“Nell, you cannot be serious, there is no way I’m going to even attempt to ride that bike, here let me read this, GSXR1000 top speed 186mph. The maximum legal speed in the UK is 70mph, this thing goes at almost three times that. Added to which it is far too heavy, I mean it’s almost as bad as those Gold Wings, if they toppled over neither of us could move them.”

Nell Wilson sighed, “It’s a good bike, Hilda, Alan told me it was excellent. And we’ll need a powerful bike for mountainous terrain.”

“Why not something like this?” Hilda moved across to the smaller bikes, Nell followed and snorted,

“If you think I’m riding a lawn mower you can think again, Hilda!” she said abruptly, “Look at this! A 125cc engine, it’ll never cope!”

At this point the salesman intervened, “I have to say, ladies, I agree,”

Hilda and Nell both turned to look at him and he smiled, “Forgive me,” he said quickly, “You said you were touring and going into mountainous terrain?”

“Yes, we’ll be in the Highlands of Scotland,” Nell replied.

“Ah, then you are quite correct, this small bike will not be suitable,” he smiled at Miss Annersley, “This bike is of far more use in towns, as a commuter bike.”

“See?” Nell said quickly.

“Yes, madam, but the GSXR1000 is also not suitable,” the salesman continued, “It is more of a sports bike, whereas you require a tourer.” The man walked across to some other bikes, “Now this one is far more suitable, it has the power, it has a top speed of 120mph, and enough room to carry baggage and equipment. The Suzuki SV 650.”

The two friends looked at the bikes, then looked at each other and nodded. After also arranging for hire of helmets, leathers and boots they decided to take the bikes straight away so that they could have a practice run. They left the people carrier in the showroom car park, intending to return for it later.

Next bit!

Melbourne

All four mistresses from the Real Chalet School had done well on their last day of diving. At the end of the class all the trainees had been presented with their certificates stating that they were now Novice Divers.

“Now remember,” Mark said to everyone, “This is only the start, to progress you have to actually go on properly supervised dives, that means with people holding the correct qualifications. The log books Col is passing round, have to be completed before you can progress to the next stage.”

While everyone else was leaving the instructors asked the four from the Real Chalet School to remain, “Just to say to all of you,” Col began, “We’d really like to see you all progress in the sport. When we next arrange a dive for ourselves, would you be interested?”

The four looked at each other, Ruth looked across, “definitely,” she said.

“Good, we’ll be in touch,” Mark smiled, “It’ll have to be the weekend, that OK?”

“No problem,” Nancy replied, “After this weekend we’ll be free for the next two, can’t be this one though, we’re going to Sydney for the weekend.”

The flight to Sydney and transfer to their hotel went without incident and the four friends settled for a light meal in the hotel restaurant before an early night.

The following morning saw them up fairly early, having breakfast in the hotel. The tickets for the Opera House were for the evening performance, starting at 8pm, therefore they discussed what to do with their day. None of them was particularly interested in shopping, instead going down to Circular Quay to view the harbour. While there they noticed that there was a Jazz Festival on Manly Beach, starting at midday. Catching a ferry across the harbour they spent the afternoon there, returning to their hotel in good time to change and then have a meal prior to taking their seats in Sydney’s famous Opera House.

Of all of them, Ruth and Kathie Ferrars were probably the two most musical and had collaborated in a number of Christmas plays at the chalet school. Neither Nancy nor Rosalind owned any particular musical abilities, but they both enjoyed listening. The performance was wonderful, so very different to the Jazz they had listened to earlier that day, but no less charming. At the interval they all had a small glass of wine to toast Hilda and Nell, their benefactors.

Alex - what are you doing in New Zealand?

Everyone - away tonight - return tomorrow sometime, but I did write a little extra to whet your appetites!

The bikes were much bigger and more powerful than either Hilda or Nell expected. Although they had had one day of instruction, it was debatable if that was really enough to handle riding such powerful machines. However they did both have a number of advantages, firstly they both had ‘road sense’, that elusive knowledge of how to judge the traffic and anticipate actions. This was something any driver develops in time, and they had both been driving for long enough. Secondly, they were both very adaptable, all the original chalet school personnel were, they would never have adapted to the modern 21st century world, when they had been stuck for so long in the 1930’s! Thirdly, both Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson were stubborn, they were not going to allow a mere machine to beat them! Those qualities proved to be enough.

They had spent the first hour or so after hiring the bikes, in the large, almost empty showroom car park, just practising how to handle the bikes, and getting a feel for how they performed. Eventually, while drinking a cup of coffee offered both of them by the salesman, they decided that they should go out onto the road,

“At least it’s dry, Nell” Hilda looked out at the weather, “it would be somewhat more difficult riding in the rain.”

“I’m more happy that it’s not foggy,” returned her friend, “Although I must admit, if it were, the cars would be able to see you. You look like a wasp!”

Hilda, wearing leathers that were black with brilliant yellow flashes down the sides, looked down at her herself and smiled.

“At least people will see me, Nell,” she said calmly, “Whereas, at night, I don’t think you will be seen at all!” Nell’s leathers were plain black.

They moved onto the roads, initially staying on the little side roads, the quiet ones, as their confidence grew they moved to the main roads. After a time they decided to move to the road they would be travelling on for a great deal of their journey, the A1.
Moving along this major route through England Nell roared on ahead, generally reaching any destination well ahead of her partner. When they had both stopped in a lay-by she turned to Hilda,

“I hope you’re not going to be this slow on Monday, Hilda! Otherwise we’ll never reach Scotland.”

Hilda looked across at her partner, “I don’t consider 50mph slow, Nell,” she replied.

“It is when the speed limit is 70mph!” Nell retorted, “I mean that stretch of road was motorway, there was hardly any traffic and you’re tootling along in the inside lane. It was embarrassing!”

“I’m able to go faster if I wish, Nell,” Hilda’s reply was a little injured,

“I doubt it, I think you have a speed restrictor on that bike. Makes it cut out if you go above 50!”

Hilda glanced over at her friend, “Well, I’ll just have to prove to you that that is not the case,” she said softly but determinedly. She revved up the engine and replaced her helmet.

“What are you doing?” Nell called above the noise of the bike. Hilda didn’t answer her, instead setting off along the road. “Hilda, slow down, I didn’t mean for you to go fast here - it’s dangerous!”

Nell’s words were flung back at her, mockingly, Hilda did not hear them.

Enjoying yourself, Rachael? Laughing

Nell swore and quickly switched her bike engine on, moving as fast as she dared she tried to catch up with her friend. Some minutes later however, coming over the top of a ridge, she saw she was too late. Up ahead she could see a police car, its lights flashing, in front of it she could see a motor bike, the rider wearing leathers with brilliant yellow flashes along the sides.

The blue flashing light told Hilda Annersley that she should stop, seeing a lay-by ahead, she pulled in, slowed the motorbike to a halt, and switched off the engine. In the rear view mirror she could see a policeman exit the car and place his hat on his head, Hilda removed her helmet and waited.

“Good morning, madam, can I have your license please?”

The English Mistress bit her tongue while retrieving her license from her breast pocket. She handed it across to the policeman, noting as she did that he appeared to be about ten years old!

“Thank you madam, I’ll just run this through our computer.” He disappeared back to the car with the license. As he did Hilda noted another motorcyclist drive up to the lay-by, pass the police car and herself, and stop a little further on. It was Nell. Hilda swallowed slightly and refused to meet her friend’s gaze.

The policeman returned, “That’s all in order, Miss Annersley,” he said, gravely, “now, do you know why I have stopped you?”

Miss Annersley looked over at the policeman, his face was expressionless.

“Well, I think I might have been going a little fast,” Hilda admitted softly.

The policeman nodded, “I see, are you aware of the speed limit along this stretch of road?”

“Er, I think it’s 40mph,” Hilda said faintly, she could see that Nell had moved a little closer, listening.

“You think it’s 40mph?” the policeman repeated, “Tell me, Miss Annersley, is it not your business to know the speed limit?” The tone was faintly sarcastic and Hilda flushed slightly.

“Yes, it is, I apologise Constable.”

The policeman nodded, “Are you aware Miss Annersley, of your actual speed as you topped that ridge?”

Hilda looked down for a moment, “It was 65mph,” she admitted, she glanced quickly across at Nell, she was leaning against her bike, grinning.

“Correct,” the policeman agreed, “Tell me Miss Annersley, what is your profession? Are you speeding to save a life, perform surgery or something similar?”

“I’m a Hea…” she stopped, thinking rapidly, and corrected herself, “I’m a schoolmistress.”

“I see,” the policeman sighed, “And this is a good example for your pupils, is it?”

“No,”

“No, Miss Annersley, and I should imagine that your Head teacher will be somewhat disappointed with you, too!”

“I think I can guarantee that, Constable!” Miss Annersley replied grimly.

The policeman retrieved a notebook from his jacket and filled in a form, he handed it across to Hilda, “I’m issuing a fixed penalty fine, if you can pay it now it will not involve an endorsement on your license. Can you afford the £80.00 fine?”

Miss Annersley nodded and retrieved the necessary method of payment. The policeman took the money and issued a receipt.

“If you’re stopped for speeding again anywhere in the UK over the next three years, Miss Annersley, that endorsement will be placed on your license and you will have 3 penalty points.” The policeman turned to leave, then turned back for a final speech. “In future I suggest you follow the example of your friend here,” he pointed toward Miss Wilson, “You’ll be less likely to drive dangerously. Good day ma’am.”

Congrats Carolyn!

#667:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Wed Jun 16, 2004 9:44 pm

Nell's not finished yet, Jennie!

The policeman walked back to his car; a short time later he drove off, leaving the two motorbikes in the lay-by. There was silence, Nell walked across to stand next to Hilda. Hilda Annersley sat, unmoving, on her bike. In one hand she still held the receipt given to her by the policeman, on the bike in front of her lay her helmet.

“This is your fault, Nell,” Hilda Annersley’s voice was quiet and somewhat emotionless.

“Yes Hilda. I did try to stop you, Hilda,” Nell replied quickly, “After all, that salesman did warn us about the speed trap just here.”

“He did,” Hilda agreed, still staring fixedly into space, “And normally I would have remembered. It was because of your comments that I forgot. In fact, if there were any justice, you would pay this fine.”

Nell reached across and smoothly removed the receipt from Hilda’s grip, she glanced down at it, “How about if I pay half?” she said gently.

Hilda nodded slightly. There was another silence, then Nell folded the receipt and put it in her pocket, there was an evil light in her eyes,

“Hilda, I think we need to discuss something rather important,” she began, “Now I know that you will not allow any of the girls to blackmail you. The business with the Ice Hockey match last term was proof of that. But I believe this is a somewhat different situation.”

Hilda looked across at her friend, suddenly registering that the receipt had disappeared.

“You wouldn’t!” she said quickly, staring into Nell’s eyes.

“Well I don’t know, Hilda,” Nell Wilson was enjoying herself, “I mean, I know I got drunk and hung over last Sunday. But, after all, I was on holiday, I didn’t harm anyone, and I broke no laws.”

“Give me back that receipt, Nell!” Someone that had never met Hilda Annersley would have thought they heard absolute panic in her voice, but surely they’d be mistaken, Miss Annersley never panicked!

“Of course Hilda, later,” Nell smiled, she looked up at the sky, an expression of mock anguish on her face, “It’s what to do for the best, you see, Hilda,” she continued, “I mean, should the Staff know that their Headmistress has broken the law?”

Hilda went pale, she said nothing, merely waiting for her friend to continue.

“And of course there’s the Board,” Nell was now having severe difficulty keeping a straight face, “I mean, during our last meeting you were elected Vice-Chairman of the Board, a singular honour.”

Miss Annersley closed her eyes, she seemed to be praying.

“And, finally, there’s the pupils of the Real Chalet School,” Nell said, “I’m sure they would be interested, especially if they were to see the receipt as it clearly states that you lied about your profession. You may find there is a slight discipline problem, for a while. The girls may feel they have to follow your example.”

It was now impossible for Miss Annersley to go any whiter, she took a deep breath then turned to her partner, “What do you want?” she asked very faintly.

Miss Wilson reached across to pat her friend on the shoulder, “I’ll let you know!” she said with a grin.

I think it's the effect of reading 'Spy' followed by this Very Happy Oh, and the fact I've had a day of a woman doing this to me, and the 'not managing a straight face' was to do with nastiness, not gentle humour.

Hilda's funny though, thinking she can get away with it.

Next!

The two friends returned to the showroom and finalised all details for the hiring of the bikes and equipment. After some discussion, they decided to leave the people carrier in the showroom staff car park - there was only a small fee involved. As none of the girls could drive and were not insured it seemed to make more sense than leaving it at the resort. They then travelled back to Centre Parcs on the bikes.

Arriving back at the lodge they found that the girls had returned there after visiting the pool, they had also enjoyed the archery although none of them had found it as easy as they first thought to hit the target. As Hilda and Nell appeared the girls were just getting changed after showering and intended going to the County Club for lunch.

“We’ll join you girls, if we may?” Hilda said, smiling. The girls all nodded.

Nell shot a look across at her partner before remarking innocently, “Oh and don’t worry about the bill, Hilda said she’d treat all of us!”

Hilda looked slowly over at Nell, she then turned to the girls and confirmed that she would pay! All afternoon, Alison, Louise and Carol remarked among themselves about how generous Miss Annersley was. It seemed that, regardless of whether it was paying the bill for meals, buying drinks or paying for entrance to other attractions, Hilda paid. To begin with, admittedly, she paid only after Miss Wilson said that she would. But she accepted Nell’s word and continued paying for everything. That evening they all went to a very exclusive and expensive restaurant. At the end of the meal, without Nell having to say anything, Hilda passed her credit card across for the entire party. Nell grinned.

Back in the lodge, all five sat watching the late movie on TV, even here it seemed that Hilda Annersley could not do enough for everyone, making coffee and snacks for all and refusing offers to help wash up. She even tidied up at the end of the evening!

In their shared room Nell had already retired to bed by the time Hilda had finished putting everything away. She walked into the room in silence, retrieved her wash things, nightdress and dressing gown and disappeared out to one of the two bathrooms. On her return, tall and stately in her dressing gown, she stopped beside Nell’s bed,

“How long are you going to keep this up, Nell?” She asked softly.

Nell smiled up at her friend, “Well that depends, Hilda,” she began, “How desperate are you that my information goes no further?”

There was silence from Hilda, she got into bed, “You know I’ll have my revenge, Nell, don’t you?” she said quietly.

“Yes Hilda, you always do,” Nell agreed, “But that’s not going to stop me enjoying this!” She smiled and snuggled down in the bed, “Oh, one thing,” she continued, Hilda looked across, “Breakfast in bed tomorrow, eight o’clock!”

Hilda’s eyes bored into Nell’s for some seconds but eventually she inclined her head slightly in acknowledgement of the order.

The next day followed a similar pattern, Hilda remained insistent that she pay for any activity, food or drink that the five wanted. She also performed all housework in the lodge, even making the beds! That afternoon, it was raining quite heavily, the girls disappeared to the Ten Pin Bowling arena, while Hilda and Nell stayed in the Lodge, ostensibly to arrange their packing ready for an early start the following day. However, only Nell was in their room packing, Hilda was sat in the lounge staring out of the window. Nell appeared at the doorway,

“Hilda?”

Hilda turned, “What is it Nell?” Her tone slightly amused, “Did you want me to do your packing?”

“Now there’s an idea!” Nell smiled, “Something on my bed for you to clear up,”

Hilda nodded and swiftly rose, walking into their room she walked over to Nell’s bed, there was an envelope addressed to her, she opened it. On seeing the contents she sat on Nell’s bed, checking through them. The receipt was there, and a significant amount of money. Nell walked in and sat beside her friend. She placed an arm around her shoulders,

“Near as I can figure it, that’s half the money you’ve spent over the last day or two,” Nell said gently, “Plus half the fine.”

Hilda smiled, “I thought you’d keep this going for far longer,” she observed.

“Oh, I thought about it.” Nell replied quickly, “It was very satisfying seeing you obeying my every whim! But I must be getting as soft as you. Sorry I goaded you yesterday, it was my fault you were speeding. I‘ll make us both some coffee.”

Nell gave her friend one more squeeze before getting up to go to the kitchen, a soft voice behind stopped her,

“You’re the most aggravating and irritating person I know. You make it your business to ensure I am humiliated and lose any dignity and authority at every occasion possible.” Hilda turned to look across at her friend,

Nell grinned, “Hilda, you say such wonderful things!” she said.

Hilda smiled, “I don’t know how I’d survive without you.”

Another wonderful exchange! Thank you Lesley, the insights you are showing into Nell and Hilda's characters make them increasingly real, I no longer would be surprised to bump into them in a bookshop in Cambridge, for example!

And next!

Hilda and Nell set off early Monday morning; they’d brought their bikes down to the lodge the night before and packed everything onto them. Their luggage was all contained within waterproof panniers on either side of the back wheel of the bikes and a further one above it. In addition they had used the space for a pillion passenger for more luggage. Both of them had maps in waterproof covering and directions on how to get there. According to the AA maps downloaded from the Internet, the journey to Pitlochry was scheduled to take a little over six and a half hours. Nell and Hilda expected, due to their own inexperience, and the fact that they would be taken frequent breaks and possible detours, that it would take a lot longer.

A little after seven am saw both women outside, finishing the loading of their bikes. Normally any motorised vehicle had to be left in the car park, only returning to the lodge for packing/unpacking. However they had obtained permission to have the bikes there overnight, due to the early start. The only condition was that the bikes’ engines were not to be switched on until away from the living quarters. Once loaded, Hilda, Nell and the girls pushed the bikes slowly along the paths until far enough from the lodges.

“Now, you will be alright?” this from Hilda, “You have enough money and supplies?”

“You know how to get in touch with us, if there’s a problem?” Nell was also concerned, “Don’t worry about spoiling thing for us, we want to know immediately if you have any trouble!”

Alison hugged first one then the other, “We’ll be fine, don’t worry,” she said, smiling, “And you have a good time, if you need us for anything just call!”

Hilda called Louise over to her, “Louise, I’m sure you’ll be seeing Andrew at the weekend,” she said softly.

Louise blushed slightly and the Head smiled, she pulled the girl close, “Just take care,” she whispered, “Remember all you’ve been taught in both Biology and Orientation classes.”

Louise looked across at Hilda, “Oh but I don’t think…” she started.

Hilda reached out and cupped her hands gently around Louise‘s face, “All I’m saying, Louise, is that if anything happens, be prepared, be careful and enjoy yourself!” She smiled and Louise, still blushing slightly, smiled back.

Carol kissed both women goodbye and all three waved as the two friends started the bike engines and moved off.

I love the way Hilda and Nell have embraced the 21st century!

btw: a motorcyclist in black leathers raced up behind me yesterday and roared past weaving in and out of the traffic - doing a tremendous speed in a 40 mph area. It was vaguely on their route, if they wanted to avoid motorways and see the countryside. Was it Hilda? I found myself looking in my mirror for Nell following behind Shocked

Next little bit!

It had been decided that they would make the journey in easy stages, stopping for a break every hour or so. The journey started on the A1 and the two friends managed to cover a reasonable distance before pulling in for a short break. As they were both stretching after getting off the bikes a fellow motorcyclist walked past,

“That’s the only drawback of these things,” he said, smiling, “Ride for long enough and next time you get off you’ll be walking like John Wayne!”

The two friends smiled politely at him, once he had gone Hilda turned to Nell,

“Who is John Wayne?”

“An American actor, I think,” Nell replied, “Used to be in Westerns!”

A short time later the two were sat with a pot of tea and some breakfast, eating, after a while Nell looked up,

“I saw you speaking to Louise, what did you say?”

Hilda relayed her conversation with Louise, “Do you disapprove?” she asked gently.

Nell considered, “I would have, if we were still in the fictional world. I think, for that time and the people we were, your words would have been completely inappropriate.”

“What about now?”

Nell look across at her friend, “No, I don’t disapprove. You warned Louise to be careful, yet acknowledged human nature.”

“And the Church?”

Nell smiled, “I know the official doctrine,” she said simply, “But I disagree with it, in some cases. I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask everyone to be either celibate or married.” She reached across to touch Hilda’s hand; “You gave good advice, Hilda, and I’m glad that you did. Even though I agree with it, I may have found it difficult to actually come out and say the words.”

Have another bit then, Pat!

They continued their trip, travelling, normally side by side, but, in traffic, one in front of the other, taking it in turns to lead. Some time later, as they were coming up toward Pontefract, the traffic slowed to a crawl, weaving in and out of the stationary cars the two reached the front of the queue to find that the A1 had been closed due to a serious accident. They followed the diversion signs onto the M62, intending to rejoin the A1 via the M1. Unfortunately they managed to miss the M1 junction and continued along the M62 for some time before realising their mistake.

On finally taking a slip road off the motorway the two found a lay-by so they could stop and compare notes.

“Who’s bloody idea was it to build all these roads?” Nell was somewhat peeved, “What was wrong with just keeping simple A roads, they worked perfectly when I was last in England!”

“Nell, the last time you were in England was in the early 1950’s, I think the amount of traffic might have increased a little since then!” Hilda’s reply was amused, “Look, if we continue along this road, we should be able to pick up the motorway a little further on, then we can get back to the A1.”

They sped off once more, a short time later they noticed a car stopped on the side of the road, it had a puncture. A woman was standing next to the driver’s seat speaking in a mobile phone; she seemed to be aged late 50’s to early 60’s. Both bikes slowed down to see if they could help. The woman had watched with interest and a little trepidation as two large bikes had slowed down and stopped just ahead of her stranded car. Once both Hilda and Nell had got off their bikes and removed their helmets though she was a little happier.

“Hello there!” Nell smiled, “Wondered if you wanted some help?”

The woman smiled, “That’s kind of you,” she said, “It’s only a puncture and I’m perfectly capable of changing a wheel, only Alan took the car to the garage a couple of weeks ago and they’ve tightened the nuts so much I can’t shift them!”

Hilda smiled, “No problem, Nell will be able to undo them!” Nell looked across at her friend and Hilda continued, “She’s always saying how strong she is!”

Nell grinned and walked over to the flat tyre, holding her hand out for the wrench. Hilda turned to the woman, “I’m Hilda, by the way, that’s Nell,”

“I’m Pat,” the woman smiled, “and that is Mac,” she pointed to a dog in the back of the car. “Good of you to stop,” she continued, “Not everyone would in this day and age,”

“Not a problem, “ Hilda said, “We’re only too happy to help!”

Nell, wrenching the nuts on the wheel rather viciously, called across, “Yes, we are!” rather pointedly!

Hilda grinned, “Perhaps you can help us, in return?” she continued, “We’ve taken a few wrong turns and need to get back to the A1, but past the M1 junction?”

“Not a problem,” Pat smiled, she reached inside for her Atlas to show Hilda the route to take, as she did Hilda noted two books beneath the Atlas, she smiled.

“Yes I know, they’re children’s books, or at least they are based on a children’s series,” Pat said, a little defensively. “But I’m not the only one that loves them, and I’m looking forward to reading those two books. Each of them concentrates on one of the two Heads of the School.”

Hilda said nothing, just smiled, then listened as Pat showed her the simplest way back to the A1, a short time later, having changed the wheel, Nell joined them.

Hilda and Nell nodded when Pat had finished, thanking her for the directions, she in turn thanked Nell for changing the tyre.

“Not a problem, Pat,” Nell smiled, “Oh, by the way, I think you’ll find this book the better of the two,” she pointed to A Chalet School Headmistress, Hilda looked across and smiled,

“I disagree,” she said firmly, “I think the one about the true headmistress is far more interesting!”

They both waved goodbye to Pat before getting back on their bikes and riding off, Pat waved until they were out of sight, “Goodbye Hilda, goodbye Nell,” she called, before getting back into her car. She looked across at the two books, and something struck her about the names she had just called out, she picked up the two books, thinking,

“Don’t be ridiculous!” she said sharply, “It’s just coincidence!”

Next!

Melbourne

The weekend in Sydney had gone very well, the flight back to Melbourne wasn’t until late afternoon so the four friends took the opportunity to explore a little more of the city. Nancy, having been there before, was able to take them to some of the less well-known attractions. On their return to the School all four felt a little flat, knowing that they had nothing special planned for the coming week. However, on picking up their messages they discovered that Col had left an invitation to a dive for the next weekend, and that Geoff Stevens had arranged for all of them, and John and Sara Coates, to go out for dinner. So the Sunday evening passed pleasantly.

On Monday there was a pleasant surprise; in the post bag addressed to the Head, Ruth opened an Airmail envelope, it was from Jeanne de Lachennais! She wrote to say that the inquest into the death of Gwynneth Lloyd was complete and she was flying to back to Australia from Nepal. She was arriving that afternoon! Quickly Ruth managed to arrange temporary accommodation for Jeanne in one of the guest rooms in the Staff House. Proper allocation of a room would have to wait until the Heads’ return, and for Jennie Macleod, the Senior Housemistress, to come back from holiday.

That afternoon all four travelled to the airport to meet her in one of the minibuses. Waiting in the Arrivals lounge stood a slight, dark woman, somewhat older than any of them but still only appearing about forty, her left arm had a plaster of Paris on it, from fingers to elbow, and was carried in a sling. She looked very fit otherwise, her somewhat sallow complexion tanned from her time in the mountains. When she saw the four from the Real Chalet School her face lit up in a broad smile.

“Ruth, Nancy, all of you! How delightful! But where is Hilda?” Jeanne smiled round at the four.

“On holiday, Jeanne,” Ruth said as she was kissed on both cheeks by the little French woman, “She and Nell have been away for a week. She told me she was going to email you?”

“Oh I expect she did,” Jeanne said, greeting the others, “Unfortunately my laptop is faulty, it will not connect to the Internet. I think Gwynneth must have sabotaged it prior to our last meeting! Never mind, tell me everything!”

Back at the School they helped Jeanne unload her luggage into the guest room, Ruth apologising that Jeanne did not have her own room yet,

“Not a problem, cherie,” Jeanne smiled, “I am just pleased to be home!”

“Will you try the climb again, Jeanne?” Rosalind asked.

Jeanne considered, “I will, but not for a while,” she shivered slightly, “at the moment, whenever I see snow I think of Gwynneth coming to push me onto the glacier. Time spent back at the School, during a peaceful, normal term, will make it seem better.”

Nancy laughed, “Peaceful? I think you’d better go to another school then Jeanne!”

The women all laughed, then Nancy and Kathie invited everyone over to their cottage for the evening.

Much later that evening, after nearly everyone else had retired to bed, Geoff Stevens and Rosalind Moore were out walking in the grounds. Although warm and dry, it was fairly cloudy with a slight wind, most of the stars were obscured. The couple had walked down to the beach and sat, leaning against some rocks. After a short time Geoff placed an arm gently around Rosalind, when she made no demur he softly but insistently pulled her closer, so that she was laying on his chest, her head just beneath his chin. He placed both arms around her and they continued staring out to sea.

“Dr Venables has said that Kelly could be discharged by the end of the month,” the Major said softly.

“Will she be well enough to come back to School then?” Rosalind sounded a little worried, knowing that, once Kelly was back at school, the soldier would have to return to his unit.

Geoff shook his head, “Not until Half Term, she’s still got a lot of physiotherapy and building up before she’s fit.”

“That’s good,” Rosalind said, then jerked up, realising what she said, “Oh, Geoff, I didn’t mean that, I…”

Geoff laughed and pulled her back to her original position, with her back against his chest, “Idiot,” he said, smilingly, “I know what you meant! I’m glad too, it’ll also mean we have a chance to ensure that Kelly is as much a part of this as the two of us.”

“I wouldn’t want her to feel left out or upset, Geoff,” Ros Moore was adamant, “She has to be your priority, she’s only a young girl, she only has one dad,”

Geoff blew softly over the top of Rosalind’s dark curls, “She doesn’t feel left out, Ros,” he said, “It was her idea that I come over this evening after visiting her, she said she didn’t want you feeling lonely.”

Rosalind turned her head so that she could look into Geoff’s eyes, “Well Major Stevens, you have a very mature, sensitive and lovely daughter,” she said softly.

Geoff reach across to stoke down the side of Rosalind’s face, “Why Miss Moore, I do believe you are correct.”

There was a short silence when they just stared at each other, then Geoff spoke again, “Of course her father is fairly mature and sensitive as well!”

They moved closer…..

They kissed....

When they broke apart Rosalind smiled, “I think he’s pretty lovely too,” she said.

She twisted round in his arms so that she was once more staring out to sea, the fingers of her right hand entwined with the fingers of his.

Scotland

The rest of Hilda and Nell’s journey to Pitlochry was without incident. They made fairly good time, even with breaks but pulled into Pitlochry itself in the early evening. Following a small map provided by Major Stevens, they drew up outside a row of cottages on the northern edge of the town. They knocked at a door and a little Scots woman opened it.

“Good evening, are you Mrs Duncan?” Hilda swiftly removed her helmet while speaking, “I’m Hilda Annersley, this is Nell Wilson,”

“Ah, the ladies that’ll have the Major’s cottage for the next week?” Mrs Duncan smiled, “Come in, come in, I’m sure you could do with a cup of tea, you’ve been travelling a while?”

A little later the friends were sat in Mrs Duncan’s lounge sipping tea, Mrs Duncan smiled at them both, “I understand the Major’s little girl was in an accident? That’s why he’d not arranged for many visitors this summer. How is she?”

“Much improved now,” Hilda replied, “She should be back at School sometime next term,”

“That’s good, and you both teach at the school? What subjects?”

“I teach Science, specialising in Chemistry,” Nell replied, “Hilda teaches English, especially English Literature,”

Mrs Duncan turned toward Hilda and her light Scots accent became more pronounced, “Ah, I’m afraid that English Literature is not taught so much here, apart from Shakespeare. We concentrate on other writers.”

Hilda smiled, “Such as Robert Burns?” she asked, “Let me see if I can remember…” she thought for a while then began to recite:

"Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots, wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome to your gory bed,
Or to Victorie!

Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o’ battle lour;
See approach proud Edward's power-
Chains and Slaverie!

Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha can fill a coward's grave?
Wha sae base as be a Slave?
Let him turn and flee!

Wha, for Scotland's King and Law,
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Free-man stand, or Free-man fa',
Let him on wi’ me!

By Oppression's woes and pains!
By your Sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!

Lay the proud Usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow!-
Let us Do or Die! “

Hilda finished with a flourish then smiled at Nell, “It’s called the March to Bannockburn,” she said,

“I know what it is, Hilda,” Nell returned quickly, “Con Stewart taught me it years ago. I’m just amazed that you know it!”

“Just because I study and teach English Literature doesn’t mean I cannot appreciate the literature of other countries, Nell,”

Mrs Duncan clapped, “Well I’m very impressed,” she said, “Though it does sound strange, hearing that particular poem spoken with an English accent! Now, let me get you the keys to the cottage, I’m sure you are both ready for a meal and bed after your journey. I’ve left a casserole in the fridge for you, I didn’t think you’d be wanting to cook tonight.”

“Oh that’s very good of you…” Hilda began,

“Think nothing of it,” Mrs Duncan replied, “The Major asks me to do very little and after hearing that poem, and from an Englishwoman, no less, I’m happy to do it!”

They left Mrs Duncan and travelled on a few more minutes to the cottage, after unpacking and warming up the casserole for a very tasty supper, they both retired to bed early.

The following morning, bright and early, the two friends were up and about. They had been unable to see much of the surrounding countryside the night before as it had started getting dark, so were looking forward to exploring. They were also aware of the march of the seasons, it was early October and there was a real bite in the air, luckily both of them had remembered to pack warm clothing. Looking out at the grey sky Nell forecast rain, heavy and possibly thundery, before the end of the day,

“Although I don’t think it’ll come before late afternoon or early evening, Hilda,” she said, “We should still have a full day out.”

“Excellent, now where are those maps, we should work out where we are going!”

A short time later they set off, intending to explore some of the countryside, rode along tracks until well into the mountains. Once reaching a convenient spot to park the bikes they changed out of their biking clothes into suitable clothing and footwear for hiking in rough terrain, then, with rucksacks carrying their lunch, emergency equipment and maps they set off to explore. On other days Nell wanted to go to areas for the rock formations, however on this occasion they merely wanted to explore.

They spent the day hiking, moving across the countryside at a brisk pace, stopping to take photographs and admire the view. For lunch they stopped beside a small, crystal clear river and ate sandwiches and drank coffee from flasks. They were also able to refill their water bottles while sat there. After lunch they rested for a while, Nell examining a few rocks she had picked up along the way, while Hilda read. They set off again after less than an hour. Finally, as the cloud cover started to increase and the bad weather seemed to be moving in, they returned to where they had left their bikes.

“Journey back to the cottage should take about 90 minutes,” Nell said, “We’ll be lucky to get back before it starts to pour.”

Hilda finished pulling on her leathers and fastening her boots, “Well at least Ruth and the others would approve,” she said, smiling, “I don’t think I’ve relaxed more than today!”

They both finished fastening all their equipment onto the bikes and got on; minutes later they were both riding back to the cottage. The rain started to fall heavily before they had ridden an hour and the last part of their journey back was far slower as the wind and driving rain reduced visibility considerably. As they were travelling on small, country roads, they tended to travel in single file, taking it in turns to lead. Hilda was leading at one point and it took her a few minutes to realise that Nell was not behind her. She quickly turned back and found Nell, parked by the side of the road, trying out the ignition.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Hilda had to shout to be heard above the noise of the rain and thunder.

Nell shook her head, “No idea,” she said shortly, “Engine just cut out, did it a couple of times before and I just restarted it without even having to stop. This time though it won’t start again.”

She reached into her jacket pocket and retrieved her mobile and a small AA card, for breakdowns. Nell spoke on the phone for a while. Eventually she sighed and placed the phone back in her jacket, she walked over to where Hilda sat on her bike.

“The AA seem to think it’ll be easy to fix,” she said, the rain streaming down the sides of her face, “Only problem is, they can’t get someone to me until tomorrow morning, eight o’clock. I’ve said that won’t be a problem, we can leave the bike here for the night, no one can steal it, and we’re only a few miles away from the cottage.”

Hilda nodded, and Nell turned back to her bike to retrieve her rucksack and helmet, as she moved back toward Hilda’s bike, intending to ride pillion, Hilda suddenly opened the throttle and the bike moved forward a few feet.

Nell sighed, “Very funny, Hilda, now stop playing silly buggers!” She walked toward Hilda again only for the same thing to happen. “OK, I’ll bite,” Nell kept a tight rein on her temper, “What are you doing?”

Hilda looked back at her friend, she raised the visor on her helmet and, even in the gloom due to the heavy rain, Nell could see her eyes were sparkling, “Do you remember what I said, Nell? On Saturday night?”

“Saturday night? What are you talking about?” Nell was perplexed.

“I said I would have my revenge, Nell!”

Nell swallowed suddenly, “Hilda, you wouldn’t! It’s more than two and a half miles back to the cottage!”

“Nearer to three, I believe, mostly up hill as well!” Hilda agreed, a vast store of amusement in those few words.

“Hilda, it’s pouring down and starting to get cold, you wouldn't…”

“Do you know how long you forced me to obey you, Nell?” Hilda interrupted, “Twenty-seven hours and 30 minutes,” She smiled, “But now, it seems to all be worth it! I’ll see you in an hour or so Nell. Enjoy the walk!”

With a wave she opened the throttle and the bike sprang forward, into the gathering gloom. Nell stared after it helplessly, as it disappeared she swore, kicked an unoffending stone across the road, and started the long walk home.

Hilda did say she'd have her revenge! Twisted Evil

Great revenge! I just hope Nell doesn't get hypothermia... And has the bike been sabotaged? But the description of their day was lovely - I'm quite envious of them.

Nell's having a little think!

To begin with, as she walked Nell Wilson let rip with all the oaths and swear words she had amassed over the last year or so. Seriously angry with her friend she spoke out loud to try and order her thoughts.

“Dammit, this is not funny!” she said, “It’s starting to get dark, it’s cold and raining, there’s no one about. This is dangerous!” She was walking as she said this, her shoulders hunched up against the wind and rain, her rucksack across her back and her helmet swinging from one arm. She had thought to wear the helmet, but realised that it stopped her from seeing and hearing properly, not a problem when on the bike, but a serious concern when having to walk along an increasingly muddy track.

“Revenge for what I did on Saturday and Sunday?” she continued out loud, “This is hardly justified now is it. I mean all I did was threaten to let everyone know about her speeding ticket, it was just a joke, surely she could see that?”

Nell stopped for a moment, thinking hard, “Did she know it was just a joke?” she suddenly thought, a slight worry reared its head, Hilda knew that she’d never have done that, didn’t she? I mean, however much they might tease each other, they were the two most senior Staff at the School. Nell would never have really done something that would have so humiliated the Head. Not with something like that fine, because if that did become public knowledge, the scandal could be enough to cause Hilda to resign. As Nell had pointed out, she had broken the law.

“My God, she did think I might have said something,” Nell just whispered to herself, “She’d never have put up with all I made her do over that weekend otherwise. She thought I’d do it in fun, not realising the consequences! No wonder, when I returned the ticket and made a joke of it, she wanted revenge! Nell shook her head, “I owe her an apology,” she admitted to herself, “and I deserve this!” She strode out, now determined to reach the cottage so she could speak to her friend. She’d been walking for about 30 minutes in total when there was a single, bright headlight coming the other way. She ignored it, except to move over in the forlorn hope that she wouldn’t get splattered with mud. The bike went past then she heard it stop and turn round, it drove up beside her and stopped. It was Hilda.

“Now you’re not going to call me soft hearted, are you Nell?” Hilda said as quietly as possible considering the thunder.

Nell looked across, “No Hilda, I’ll not do that.” She walked over and got onto the back of the bike. Leaning forward slightly she whispered into her friend’s ear, “I’m sorry about last weekend, it won’t happen again.”

Hilda smiled, “OK Nell, we’re even then,” she drove the bike with the pair of them on it, back to the cottage.

Wow - soooooo brilliant!

Love the romance - the scene between the Major and the Rosalind was perfect and I have high hopes for a wedding before the end of this saga!
Great to see Jeanne back, not too worse the wear after her run-in with Gwynneth Rolling Eyes Hope we get to see a bit more of her as she's such a great character ...

And as for the Hilda/Nell scene - absolutely superb!!
Nice to see them analysing their friendship and recognising the boundaries - much as I love Nell, she thoroughly deserved that and as she was wearing leathers, she wouldn't have got that cold & wet and now that she's all fit & healthy with the running, she could have jogged to save a bit of time!! Wink

Next bit!

The two spent a quiet evening in the cottage, talking until quite late into the night, their friendship strengthened by the events of both the weekend before and that evening. The following morning, after an early breakfast, the pair rode back to where Nell had left her bike. After only a few minutes the AA mechanic appeared and checked out the machine.

“Ah, I know what it is,” he said in triumph, after Nell had explained the problem; “It’s the electronic transmission, sometimes a problem in these bikes. I think they use sub standard wiring.”

He opened up the ignition box on the bike and swapped a few wires around, within minutes he had finished and was switching on the ignition, the bike roared to life.

“Let me just check your bike too,” the engineer spoke to Hilda, “As these are both the same bike and similar number plate, it’s likely they have similar design faults.”

He replaced some wires in Hilda’s bike quickly before moving on to his next job.

“Excellent,” Nell smiled, “And it’s barely eight thirty even now.” She placed her rucksack and other belongings into the panniers of her bike.

“Where are we going, Nell?”

Nell Wilson smiled, “A place Rosalind recommended, although admittedly she’s never been, but she got some information from Lesley, apparently Lesley has been here for a Summer School in the past, studying the geology. Glen Gairn, it’s about two hours drive from here, the hike once we get there is pretty steep, but at the top of the hill is evidence of a number of igneous intrusions, shear events, regional and local metamorphism and, most importantly, the Caledonian orogeny.”

Hilda looked across at her friend, “Nell, I’m sure you just spoke English, because I recognised some of the words, but I have absolutely no idea what you just said!”

Nell smiled, “Sorry Hilda, igneous intrusions are when magma, molten rock, forces its way into surrounding rock, either as dykes – that’s vertical intrusions, or sills – horizontal ones. They can occur if the rock is under strain for whatever reason. Shear events are when rocks are literally squeezed past each other, they can leave shear marks on the rock face. Metamorphism occurs when the rocks are reheated so much that they literally metamorphose, change, into different rocks. If it happens in just a small area it's local, over a large area it's regional.”

Hilda nodded, “And the last part, orogeny? What is that?”

“It’s the term for mountain building. So that, currently, there is a Himalayan orogeny because India is pushing into Asia, and an Alpine one where Africa is pushing into Europe. Millions of years ago the Grampian Mountains were formed because two landmasses came together here. The orogeny is the reason for all the other geological structures.”

“So we’re going to have a look at a lot of old rocks then?” Nell was facing away as Hilda spoke and so didn’t see the spark of amusement in her eyes.

Nell spun round, eyes glaring, “Hilda! This is one of the most important geological sites in the world; scientists from all over the world come to look at these mountains. Before erosion the Grampian Mountains are thought to be at least as high as the Himalayan Mountains are now. This is a natural textbook for geologists and Earth Scientists, and has been since Victorian times. Some of the things detailed in these rocks occurred not just millions of years ago, but hundreds of millions of years ago.” Nell sounded almost injured at her friend’s dismissive attitude.

Hilda looked across at Nell, “I’m sorry Nell, I didn’t understand,” she said, her voice conciliatory. There was a pause, then she continued, and there was a wicked twinkle in her eyes “We’re looking at some very old rocks then?”

Nell stared at her friend through narrowed eyes, “Philistine!” she said.

The pair set off on their bikes very soon afterwards, both inwardly smiling at the exchange. Although not especially interested in geology or Earth Sciences, Hilda was happy to join Nell in her quest to learn more. The majority of the sites that Nell wanted to visit were in the middle of wilderness, areas of extreme natural beauty but no human habitation. Hilda had just started to become interested in photography, and had already started taking a number of pictures of the views. Hilda had queried why the areas with the rock formations were in such inhospitable places, Nell had replied that anywhere else and the rocks would already have been quarried for building materials.

“Even some of the most out of the way places now have huge strip mines built,” Nell had said, “I read about some in the Grampians that load directly onto huge container ships for export all over the world as aggregate for road building. Future geologists may only have pictures to tell them about what happened here in the Highlands.”

The journey to their first outcrop took about two hours in total; they stopped about halfway at a rest stop incorporating gift shop and facilities as well as exceptional views onto a loch far below. While standing drinking in the view, Hilda passed on some information she had gleaned from the owner of the gift shop.

“Do you know who owns this land, Nell?”

Nell Wilson looked round, “No idea, is it National Trust land, or some lord?”

“Neither, it’s owned by the Queen,” Hilda replied, “Take a look over there,” she pointed, “It’s Balmoral,”

Nell remained rather unimpressed, “Something to tell the girls then,” she said deadpan, “We’ve used the Queen’s conveniences!”

They continued their journey, reaching their destination a little after eleven. Luckily the bad weather of the day before had disappeared and it was bright and sunny. They quickly got changed and shouldered their rucksacks. Nell had described the hike as rather steep, seeing the almost vertical hillside that they had to traverse, Hilda wondered if she had intended to understate the difficulty of the climb. She stood looking up at the tiny rocks at the top,

“Are those rocks worth seeing, Nell?”

“Definitely,” her friend replied promptly, “Come on!” She strode purposefully forward and, after a tiny sigh, Hilda followed.

Later, on reaching the top, Hilda had to agree that the views were outstanding. She could see for miles in all directions, seeing a number of lochs and tiny villages in the far distance, while nearer was a river, thundering down the valley between two imposing mountains. They reached just below the summit a little after twelve thirty, there was a natural alcove just before the rocky outcrop itself. Spreading groundsheets on the grass, they settled down to eat their lunch, sitting in silence, drinking in the beauty around them.

Far off in the distance they could hear the sound of the occasional car or bike traversing the road below them, also heard was the sound of the river and the call of some birds riding thermals up and down the side of the hill. Also in the distance, not noticed at first, was the low steady thrum of machinery. They only noticed it when it suddenly stopped for a while. Surprised at first, Nell searched on her map and discovered that, on the other side of the hill they were on, was one of the very mines she had spoken of earlier, although it was much farther down on the other side.

After finishing their meal the two cleared up and left their rucksacks in the alcove before tackling the last stage of the climb to the rocky outcrop. Once there Nell was in her element, examining the rocks through a hand lens, following different outcrops and trying to estimate the order that different events occurred. Hilda, camera in her hand, took a few pictures of different rocks that Nell pointed out, plus a couple of her friend, before turning her attention to the landscape. She wandered away from the rocky outcrop, seeing some large birds flying nearby she brought out a small pair of binoculars, the birds were a type of eagle, she didn’t know the type. She employed the telephoto lens and took a few pictures.

Nell had disappeared over the other side of the outcrop, she returned asking if she could borrow Hilda’s binoculars,

“It’s to check out the outcrops on the tops of the two hills there and there!” Nell pointed, “I wanted to see if they matched this one,” Hilda passed over the binoculars and Nell disappeared back to the outcrop once more. Hilda followed the direction of the birds and saw they had been joined by three other birds, smaller than the two adults, and with still a small amount of their downy baby feathers showing, she realised that she was seeing a family, and settled down to take some more pictures.

“Hilda, come here a minute!” Nell’s voice disturbed her just as she was taking a picture.

“What is it, Nell?”

“Something you must see, come here!”

Hilda sighed and got up from where she had lain full length to watch the eagles, “It’s not a special type of rock is it, Nell?” she said, even while making her way back up to the top, “Only it will be wasted on me, as far as I’m concerned they all look the same!”

Nell’s face appeared at the top, grinning down at her, “No, idiot, nothing to do with rocks, just something strange I’ve seen, that’s all, hurry up!” she disappeared again.

Hilda made her way to the top, hauling herself up the last few feet she stood up and looked around, Nell was nowhere to be seen. “Nell? Where are you?” Hilda called out, a little concerned. She moved to the other side of the outcrop, seeing that the hill fell away very steeply, it would not be possible to walk down there. Slightly concerned now she walked across the entire rocky outcrop. Nell was nowhere to be seen, she had vanished.

Why did I read the whole of that post with a mounting sense of tension and holding of breath?

Ah yes, because we hadn't had a real cliff for ages and it's Lesley writing this, silly me Wink

So let me guess, the next post will not be based in Scotland??

Eek!! Shocked

What's happened to Nell?
And what did she see?
Has she stumbled on to some kind of conspiracy or criminal activity?
Question Question Question

I agree with Dawn - next post is bound to be back in Oz or with the girls! Rolling Eyes

So much for these two having a "break"!!!

Come on, Lesley - what happens next?????????

Wahey.....one of Lesley's cliffs, and she knows just how much we love them!

The tension in that was so beautifully kept til the end, we all knew that it was going to happen, but what was it, you really kept us going.

Now, where on/in earth has Nell gone?

If anything happens to Nell I'm blaming it on all of you who wanted a cliff!

*wibbles*

She said interesting and strange rather than worrying didn't she... *clutches at straws*

I'm sure there is some perfectly innocent explanation and that this isn't a reason to be worried....so why am I?

And I knew that Megan's Fisher Price Daddy wasn't going to arrive in time! Wink

Ah, well, we were about due for a cliff

And I agree, I'm certain the next three posts at least will be based on the girls activities - I wonder if Hilda's advice was taken? Very Happy

Melbourne Now that really surprised you, didn't it!!! Twisted Evil

Ruth sat in Hilda Annersley’s study, checking through the post. The last couple of days things had been going really well on the Real Chalet School site; Kathie had reported that the Chemistry Lab refurbishment was almost complete, the only thing still to do was a final coat of paint and the contractors were returning Thursday morning for that. When the Heads returned the only thing Nell would have to do would be transfer whatever chemicals and solvents she wanted stored in the lab, and ensure the new fume cabinets and burners were in working order.

Rosalind had said that preliminary reports on the Nature Park were encouraging. The ecologists had made a start on ensuring the area was properly stocked with native fauna and flora. There was a small amount of concern raised by a local environmental group about the plan to cut down some trees, they said these were rare specimens and protected. The ecologists and experts had, however dismissed these claims, the trees, although not common, were not endangered and their presence in the park would overshadow the rest of the plant-life and prevent a good diversity.

Nancy had just left the Study, work on the new boarding houses was continuing rather slowly, the foundations had still not been dug out properly - a problem with machinery rather than the workforce. The contractor had apologised profusely and promised to complete digging out the foundations today, prior to starting the building work tomorrow.

Ruth looked up as the door opened and Jeanne walked in, “I am not disturbing you, cherie?” Jeanne said in French.

Ruth immediately replied in the same language, “Not at all, Jeanne, I need a break from the unending correspondence. I can’t think how Hilda manages this every day!”

Jeanne laughed as she settled herself in one of the chairs around the small oval table, “I remember, when she first had to cover for Therese,” she said, a slight sadness crossing her face as she remembered Mademoiselle Lepattre, “She said much the same thing, she did not know how Therese had managed every day!”

Ruth smiled slightly, “None of us knew Mlle,” she said sadly, “Oh, except Nancy, I believe she knew her a little,”

“Mais, oui, Nancy would have know her, she attended St Scholastika’s at the time, she knew her, a little,”

Ruth looked across at the little Frenchwoman, “Do you still miss her?” she asked gently.

Jeanne nodded and her eyes filled with tears, “I do, Ruth, even though it was so many years ago. I was barely 22 years old when I first appeared at the School, and although the Staff were as friendly as they could be, still she was my only compatriot. She was Head even then, but made time for a shy, miserable child every evening for the first month. I think her shoulder must have been permanently damp!”

Ruth smiled slightly, “It must have been difficult for you,” she observed,

Jeanne returned the smile, “It was, oh we had accepted Hilda’s idea by then, but even so, we still had to live, EBD didn’t write about us all the time, and I was still only 22 years old!” She shook herself slightly and looked across at Ruth, “I came here for a purpose,” she said, “This afternoon I am going over to Joey’s, she has invited all of you, if you wish.”
