Cecilia Marya Maynard

It was the last time she would sign that name and, as she watched the ink drying on the paper, she wondered for a brief moment if she was doing the right thing. Yes it was definitely the right thing, she told herself, and it was what she had wanted for a long time. However, she couldn’t help wondering how her family would react when she told them what she’d done.

There was only one way to find out …

At Freudesheim, Anna was in the kitchen, baking, before dawn. It was a long time since the whole family had been together, now, even Margot was on furlough from her work in Zambia and the Maynard children were coming from all corners of the globe (query: can a globe have corners?) to celebrate the publication of Joey’s 150th book. It was a long time since they had been her nurslings, thought Anna. Even ‘little’ Phil and Geoff had left home, although Geoff visited regularly, arriving with bags of washing and departing with a supply of Anna’s best cooking. Of course Len and Reg lived with their family not far along the platz, and Felicity taught at the school, and was often in and out of the house, although she lived in the school itself during term time. There had of course, been many family get-togethers over the years, but this would be the first time that Margot was able to join them, and even some of the others had missed them on occasion.

Joey was also up early, wandering around the house making sure she had enough beds set up for everyone. She was thankful she had thought to borrow some guide tents from the school, which were pitched in the garden, and some of the younger fry would be able to stay in there as long as the weather stayed good. Once the term had ended next week, she could use the school as an annexe for guests, so they would only be squished for a few days.

'I wonder who will be the first to arrive' she said to Jack as he emerged from his dressing room. 'I bet Mike and co will be last!'

'I wonder how long it will be before we get a phone call asking me to collect someone from Interlaken' replied Jack. 'I've half a mind to send someone down with a car so it's waiting.'

'Let's see what Len thinks when she gets here' said Joey, who, as she got older, she was getting more and more in the habit of depending on her eldest daugther for advice. She said she'd head over as soon as she'd had breakfast. 'I know she's looking forward to us all being together again as much as we are.'

Soon everything was ready for the Maynard family to arrive. Len, of course, was the first to turn up with three-year old Marie, her youngest daughter. ‘The rest are at school’ Len informed her mother ‘they’ll be over later, Marie-Claire will bring them, but I thought it would be easier for now with them out of the way. Reg is hoping to get over here after lunch, if nothing urgent happens at the san.’

‘Do you know when anyone else is arriving?’ asked Joey, who had left most of the organising of the event in her daughter’s capable hands.

‘If Felix got away from the Sonnalpe ok last night he should be here about midday’ replied Len. ‘He’s bringing a friend with him – don’t worry Mamma, I’ve got a bed made up at ours’ she reassured before Jo could start to worry. ‘Now how about some coffee before we get started. Marie, my pet, will you go and ask Anna if she could put the kettle on for us?’

As Marie trotted off to the kitchen she continued ‘Mike, as you know, is a law unto himself. Steve, Erica and co should be here about fourteen. Con and her lot are meeting up with Charles and Roddy and should arrive about sixteen. Roger is meeting Margot at the airport and they should be here about half past seventeen. Geoff will be along when he’s finished work and Phil said she’d phone from Interlaken when she got there – what was that Papa?’

‘I knew someone would want to be picked up’ said Jack. ‘I don’t suppose she’s got any idea of what time?’

‘Come on Papa, this is Phil we’re talking about!’ laughed Len. ‘But don’t worry. Felicity hasn’t any classes after Mitagessen and she said she’d head down to Interlaken and wait for Phil – she’s one or two things she wants to get there anyway, and I think she's going to bring Ruey back as well.’

‘I think that’s everyone’ said Len and drained her coffee cup ‘oh, except Cecil, I’ve no idea what time she’ll be here.’

Joey looked panicked. ‘Cecil!’ she exclaimed. ‘Jack, can you remember if we’ve got a bed for her anywhere?’

Jack looked up from the letter he was reading. ‘Isn’t she in the old nursery?’

‘No, we talked about putting her in there, but Ruey and Maurice are in there with baby Evelyn, and Roger and Mélanie are in Rösli’s old room’

‘What about Roddy?’ asked Len

‘He’s going in one of the tents’ replied Jo. ‘Jack I think we’re going to have to commandeer your dressing room after all.’

Jack put aside his pile of post. 'I suppose I'd better go and clear some space in there then' he replied as he got to his feet. 'Have we got a camp bed or something to go in there?'

'I've got one' said Len 'I'll ring Reg and ask him to bring it along with him later.' she headed for the phone, but just then the doorbell rang and she changed direction to answer that. Her exclamation of 'Mike!' had Jack and Joey running to the hallway, where the third Maynard son, Michael was just entering with a small child firmly grasped in each hand.

'We didn't expect you until later' said Len as she helped divest the children of their coats. 'Marie, these are your cousins, Joaquim and Isabella'. With their dark curly hair, big brown eyes and olive skin, the children clearly looked like their Spanish mother, who had died shortly after they were born. They came out slowly from behind their father and smiled at Marie, who held out her hands to them 'I'll show you where we can play' she said and led them off.

'They're very quiet, Mike' observed Joey.

'They'll soon stop being shy and be their usual mischevious selves' replied Mike. 'As to why we're here so early, I stopped in Interlaken last night, so just had to come up here this morning. Those two had me up with the crack of sparrows, and there was no point hanging around. Is Cecil here yet? I saw her in Interlaken, but the road was busy and by the time I could see again, she'd gone - I don't think she saw us but I thought she might have beat us up here.'

'No she's not here yet.' replied Joey. 'We were just sorting out a camp bed for her. Why don't you and your father take your bags upstairs and you can unpack. By that time I'm sure Anna will have some more coffee ready.'

Sorry, only time for a little bit before I start work

From a little further up the slope, she watched Mike's arrival. She wanted to make sure she arrived last, so she could tell everyone at once, rather than have to explain it over and over again. She had discovered this hidey-hole, with a convenient view of Freudesheim when she was eight years old and had often sat up here, dreaming of the day when she would make her escape. When she would be free to be herself.

Felix was the next to arrive, she checked with her binoculars. He had someone else with him, whom she'd met once when she'd visited him at the Sonnalpe last year. Like his father, Felix was a doctor and since Uncle Jem had bought back the first san, the one he had started before he married Auntie Madge, Felix had been working there. She wondered why he'd brought someone with him; this was supposed to be family only. She didn't really want a stranger there when she spoke to them.

Somehow this has grown much bigger than it started out ...

‘Felix’ exclaimed Joey as he entered the house, ‘you got away in good time then’

‘Yes, no emergencies to keep me this time’ replied Felix. ‘Mother I’d like you to meet Dr Laura Gulliver, one of my colleagues; Laura this is my mother.’

‘Dr Gulliver, welcome to Freudesheim’ said Joey ‘Any friend of my children is always welcome, although I’m afraid on this occasion I’m unable to provide a bed for you – but I hope you’ll be happy to stay with Len.’

‘I’m Len, by the way’ said that individual, coming forward. ‘I’ll show you to our place later, but for now I’m sure you’d like to have a wash and freshen up after the journey, let me show you where. Felix could you put Dr Gulliver’s bags somewhere out of the way please – where we’ll be able to find them easily later, but no-one will fall over them in the meantime!’ she added as she led the visitor to the cloakroom.

Meanwhile, Mike emerged from the salon, to embrace his younger brother in a bear-hug! ‘Felix, it’s been too long since I saw you!’

‘You too’ replied Felix, ‘but you’re always welcome to visit us in Tirol you know.’

‘I know,’ replied Mike ‘but with two small terrors like mine, international travel isn’t the easiest thing to do. When they’re a bit older I’m sure it’ll be easier, but at the moment I never know what they’ll get into next!’

‘Reminds me of someone else I know’ interjected Jack. ‘You were the world’s worst for getting into things as a boy.’

‘Remember the boat trip to Canada’ laughed Joey, ‘I never knew whether you’d be in the engine-room or the on the poop deck and how you avoided going overboard I’ll never understand!’

‘I always loved the sea’ sighed Michael, who had given up his career in the Navy to raise his motherless children. Just then Len reappeared to ask sweetly if they intended to spend the whole day in the hallway.

‘Not at all,’ replied Felix ‘I must go and say ‘hello’ to Anna. Is she in the kitchen?’ he headed off in that direction as the rest moved back to the salon.

No sooner had they sat down than Dr Gulliver joined them closely followed by three children. ‘I seem to have made some friends’ she smiled as Len offered her a chair.

‘Dr Gulliver, this is my daughter, Marie, and these are my nephew and niece, Joaquim and Isabella, my brother Mike’s twins she added.

‘Please call me Laura.’ begged Laura as Isabella scrambled up into her lap ‘Felix has told me so much about you all, I feel I know you already.’

‘I hope it’s been nothing too terrible!’ grinned Mike. ‘Have you been working with him for long Laura? Quim you can’t both climb up on her, come and sit with me if you want a lap to sit on.’

‘Wants to sit with pretty lady’ replied Joaquim. She was pretty, realised Mike suddenly. She was completely different from Catalina’s dark, voluptuous Spanish beauty with her slender figure, ash-blonde hair and green eyes. He felt an unexpected stab of envy towards Felix. Suddenly he realised she was looking at him expectantly, waiting for the answer to a question. Before he could embarrassedly ask her to repeat herself Felix came back into the room and made a beeline for them.

‘Anna says lunch will be ready in 15 minutes’ Felix announced to all. ‘Laura has anyone shown you the view from here yet?’ He drew her up from her seat as she gently put Isabella and Joaquim (who had managed to join his sister in her lap) aside, and led her towards the window, which, on a fine day such as this, gave a magnificent view of the Jungfrau.

Mike turned his attention back to his children ‘come on you two lets go and make sure you’re clean and tidy enough to sit and eat with grown ups.’

After a noisy, laughter-filled lunch (and over half the family wasn’t even there thought Joey), Len hustled the children off for a nap and the adults retired once more to the salon with coffee. Peace and quiet settled over the house for a few minutes. Then a call of ‘anyone home?’ came from the hallway and Felicity came bursting in.

She flung herself rapturously first on her twin and then on Mike before more decorously shaking hands with Laura saying ‘nice to see you again’

‘I’m off to go and meet Phil and Ruey anyone else lurking in Interlaken that I can fit in the car’ she announced, refusing a cup of coffee and departing as quickly as she came.

‘Still whirlwind Fliss!’ laughed Mike ‘What on earth do the girls she teaches make of her?’

‘Oh she manages to be calmer most of the time’ replied Len ‘and I understand from my girls that she can be quite a disciplinarian when necessary. Plus it’s useful to have all that energy for teaching gym.’

The phone rang at that moment and Anna came in to call Len away to speak to Reg. As he was explaining that he wouldn’t be able to get away until later, the front door burst open. ‘Auntie Len’ cried a voice and she was almost knocked off balance by a small boy flinging himself against her legs.

‘Reg I’ll see you later’ said Len, as she regained her balance ‘and don’t forget the camp bed for Cecil will you?’ she hung up and turned her attention to the newcomers.

From her hiding place she watched as Steve, Erica and William arrived. It would be a while longer before all of them arrived, she thought, maybe she should go and join them now, and break the news later on? No, she decided, it was better to do it straight away, if she was there waiting for the right moment it would never come and the longer she left it the harder it would be to say anything. As it was, she was feeling increasingly nervous about breaking the news. Would any of them understand?

#69:  Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Wed Oct 06, 2004 4:34 pm

Sorry, only a quick bit now as our server's about to go down. Cecil's secret isn't very shocking and I didn't mean to keep you waiting that long, but the drabble's grown (no-one warned me they took on a life of their own) since I started it, and now it has to wait for the right place to be revealed.

The afternoon dragged on and she watched and waited as Charles and Roddy arrived, along with Con, Neil and their four boys.

The house was getting fuller and noisier as the day progressed. The three younger children had awoken from their naps and come downstairs. Jamie, Con’s eldest son, soon had them all involved in a riotous game of hide-and-seek in the garden. After a while, Jack sent Joey to lie down for a few hours ‘it’s either now or you’ll be too tired to stay up chatting with everyone this evening’ he told her. Obediently, Jo went up to their pretty bedroom, took off her frock and slipped between the sheets.

‘Is Mamma ok?’ asked Con, her brown eyes filled with worry.

‘She’s fine’ Jack reassured her ‘but neither of us are as young as we used to be, and I don’t want her exhausting herself and being unable to enjoy the week. See if you can keep the kids quiet for a while, and if anyone else arrives we’ll have to try to keep the noise down so we don’t disturb her.’

‘Okay’ replied Con ‘Mike and Felix can you round the kids up, tell them if they come and sit quietly I’ll tell them a story.’ Con’s stories were always in popular demand with the next generation and they came willingly for a tale thrilling enough to keep the older ones as enthralled as the younger ones.

Len, keeping watch from Jack’s study was able to dart out and catch the next arrivals, her own daughters and Marie-Claire, and warn them of the need to be quiet. ‘Okay Mum,’ grinned Mollie the eldest ‘but I’d like to know why, if we were always trained as babies to sleep through anything, and you said you and the uncles and aunts were as well; then why can’t Grandmamma do the same?’

‘Cheeky brat’ replied Jack who had just come down the stairs. ‘Grandmamma is fast asleep, and I don’t think she’ll wake for a couple of hours, but that isn’t an invitation to go yelling about the place. If Auntie Con has finished her story, why don’t you older kids settle down to a game of some kind – not Pit’ he added quickly, ‘something a bit quieter like Cluedo, or Monopoly if you can remember not to shout ‘rent’ too loudly.’

‘Len is that your girls I hear arriving?’ asked Con, as, story-telling finished for the moment, she emerged from the salon. ‘I’m sure it couldn’t be anyone else making so much noise trying to be quiet!’

‘Hah! you should hear your boys' attempts to whisper!’ retorted Len. It was a source of great amusement in the family that Len and Reg had managed to produce only daughters; Mollie, Rosamund (Rosie), Jacynth (Jackie), Emmie and Marie; while Con and Neil had sons; Jamie, Alex, Joseph and Rob

No sooner had they all settled down again in the salon, with fresh coffee supplied by Anna, than there was another arrival.

The hiding place wasn’t quite so comfortable and was slightly more snug now than it had been when she was younger and she cautiously emerged and stretched her cramped limbs, wondering how much longer it would be before everyone was there. Part of her longed to go and join them now; she remembered how excited she had always been as a small child, waiting for her older sisters and especially brothers to come home for the holidays. Wondering when they’d arrive and waiting to hear the tales of their exploits. The house had been filled with laughter and life had held no greater worry than whether or not she would be allowed to stay up a little bit later than usual. With a sigh for the memory of those uncomplicated days she stretched once more then retreated back into her spy-hole as another laden car came around the bend in the road.

Sorry - I've been reading other drabbles and picking up tips from some of the writers Wink Here's a bit more, but that's it until at least Monday.

Roger and Melanie got out of the car first and headed straight into the house (attempts to keep the front door closed had been given up as useless by now) and made their way to the salon, where they were warmly welcomed by everyone.

‘I’ve not seen you two since your wedding.’ declared Con ‘you both look like married life suits you.’

‘There’s someone you’ve not seen for even longer coming in behind us’ Melanie told her 'I think you and Len might find her in the hallway.’ the two of them didn't wait to hear any more but rushed from the room.

‘Margot!!’ with squeals of joy Len and Con threw themselves on their triplet.

‘Hey, steady on!’ she exclaimed when she eventually emerged from a long hug. ‘I know it’s been 4 years, but leave some of me for the others!’ Her blue eyes sparkled in her tanned face as she looked at her sisters. Yes, she thought, they were both well and happy with their lives.

‘Well come on and let me say hello to everyone else and meet my latest nephews and nieces’ said Margot ‘there’s several of them I’ve only ever seen photos of.’ Con led the way to the salon where the rest of the family had waited while the three of them had their reunion in the hallway.

‘Steve! Erica! Felix! Mike! Charles! Marie-Claire! Roddy! I don’t know which of you to hug first!' she exclaimed ‘Papa’ she settled on as Jack got a little stiffly out of his chair and held out his arms.

It was some time later that a rather tousled Margot finished a round of hugging, exclaiming, laughing and crying, and then had to be introduced to the members of the family she hadn’t yet met. Len brought Marie forward, then Con introduced 4-year old Rob. ‘And these must be your twins, Mike’ Margot squatted down to meet them as they once more turned shy and tried to hide behind their father.

‘Come on you two, say “hello” to Auntie Margot,’ encouraged Mike.

‘Auntie Margot in Afr’ca?’ queried Isabella.

‘That’s right sweetheart’ replied Mike ‘and I’m sure she’ll be able to tell you lots about it.’

‘Are there lions?’ asked Rosie

‘And tigers?’ questioned Joseph

‘And l’phants?’ shly from Joaquim.

‘All those and more,’ Margot told them. ‘There’s lots of time to tell you all about them. I’ve got eight months furlough and I intend to visit all of you in your homes once we’ve recovered from this shindig!’

‘What’s a shindig?’ asked Jackie

‘All of us getting together,’ explained Jamie.

Laura sat quietly in the corner and watched. She was forgotten for the moment, but she didn’t mind that. It was lovely to see how close this family were, despite the many miles between them and long periods of time without seeing each other. Her family got together regularly for various occasions, admittedly she went along more because she felt she ought to than because she wanted to, and there was certainly nothing like the love for each other that this family radiated.

A fanfare of tooting outside announced the return of Felicity with a carload of Phil, Ruey, Maurice and baby Evelyn, plus luggage crammed into every available space.

‘Can you guys come and help unload the car’ she demanded of her brothers as everyone poured outdoors. ‘I never knew travelling with a baby involved so much junk.’

‘Everything but the kitchen sink’ laughed Ruey as she carefully lifted the baby out of the car. ‘Uncle Jack, say “hello” to the latest addition to the family. She handed the still-sleeping baby over to him. He ran a professional eye over her and then over Ruey.

‘Well you both look the picture of health’ he declared. ‘Mind if I take her off to show Joey – she’ll be waking up around now. Phil, you come with me and tell me what you’ve been up to lately. Not overdoing it I hope?’

‘Don’t fuss Papa, I’m fine’ returned Phil, following him into the house ‘I’m making sure I get plenty of sleep and I only go to the occasional party. I’m not going to do anything silly and risk damaging my career.’

‘I know, I know’ replied Jack ‘but you hear so much about the wild lives of pop singers, and your mother worries about you, you know.’

‘Yes, but you could have some faith in me too’ Phil pointed out as she followed him upstairs.

Surely the rest of them would arrive soon she thought, yawing and having another stretch. She didn’t really want to be up here much longer – it wouldn’t get dark for a while yet, but she was getting hungry. She had eaten some sandwiches earlier, and still had a bottle of water, so thirst wasn’t a problem, but apart from some extra strong mints, she had nothing else to eat. Her eyes caught sight of two more arrivals making their way along the platz...

‘Reg, my love, what ages you’ve been’ greeted Len as her husband came into the salon.

‘Hello everybody,’ said Geoff, who had also come from the San, where he worked as a radiographer.

‘Sorry,’ replied Reg ‘had a bit of an emergency with Mrs Harvey, but it’s all ok now. Remembered the camp bed by the way. Margot it’s good to see you after all this time, Con, Mike, Felix, Ruey, Steve...’ he started a round of hand-shaking, back clapping, hugs and kisses.

‘Are we the last to arrive?’ asked Geoff, after he’d followed Reg round the room greeting everyone and they had both been introduced to Laura.

‘Not quite,’ Joey told them, looking up from the chair where she was nursing Evelyn in her lap, ‘Cecil’s not here yet.’

‘Mike swears he saw her in Interlaken early this morning though.’ said Phil.

‘Surely she’d be here by now if he had.’ interjected Felix ‘I think you were imagining things Mike old fellow!’

'Maybe it was just someone who looked like her,' suggested Erica. 'Don't they say we all have a doppelgänger somewhere in the world?'

'Bit weird if Cecil's was in Interlaken.' answered Charles.

‘I do know my own sister when I see her!’ Mike paused in the game of dominoes he was playing with Isabella and Marie, ‘I’m sure I wasn’t mistaken.’

‘You weren’t,’ said a quiet voice from the doorway.

‘Cecil!’ exclaimed several voices at once.

This was the moment, she decided. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth.

Thought about cutting this in two and posting half later, but decided that would be too mean...

‘Neee nah neee nah neee nah! I’m a policman and I’m going to get you and put you in prison!’ Rob and Joaquim ran around Cecil into the room chased by Joseph. Not paying attention to where they were going they ran through the game of dominoes, kicking pieces out of line as they went, and the two ‘robbers’ ran to hide behind chairs.

‘Okay guys,’ said Con ‘I think it’s time for you to quieten down a bit and get ready for bed. Off you go upstairs and I’ll come up in a minute.’

‘Good idea’ agreed Mike ‘Come on Quim and Bella, it’s time for bed.’ he held out his hands to them ‘You can see everyone again tomorrow’ he told them in response to their protests.

‘It’s time you lot all went home as well.’ Len told her girls. ‘Rösli will be waiting for you. Who do you want to take you, me or Daddy?’

‘Both of you’ replied Rosie promptly

Len’s eyes met Reg’s. ‘Okay then, go and get your coat and we’ll come with you. We won’t be long Mamma, we’ll be back in time for supper.’

‘We could all do with freshening up before supper anyway,’ said Ruey. ‘Auntie Joey can you tell us where we’re all lodged for the night and we can have a wash and change while the small fry are put to bed.’

There was a few minutes confusion while everyone got up and went to find their rooms. ‘Laura, come with us for the time being’ Felicity invited her brother’s guest ‘You can freshen up with me and Phil and Marie-Claire.’

She couldn’t believe she had lost her chance. Now she would have to work herself up to it again. It didn’t take her long to wash her face, change into a dress and tidy her hair, and then she sat on the camp bed that had been set up for her in her father’s dressing room, once more waiting until she knew Len and Reg were back in the house and everyone else was downstairs. She had to tell them tonight. She must watch carefully for her chance. She was starting to feel nervous again, thinking of their reactions and she gave herself a little pep talk to calm herself. No-one in her family had been brought up to be a coward; the only thing to do was to face up to them and let them know. Anyway, however much they might hate it, there was nothing they could do about it now!

She took a deep breath and went down to join her family for supper.

They said the Latin grace that all the girls had used at school, and then served themselves from the dishes down the middle of the table. Once everyone had their meal in front of them she took a hasty gulp from her glass of wine and spoke.

‘I’ve got something to tell you all.’ she said it quite loudly because she was nervous, but it had the desired effect. Everybody stopped talking to listen to her.

‘What is it Cecil?’ asked Joey.

‘I’m not Cecil Maynard anymore,’ she felt relief wash over her. She had done it. It was out now.

She felt, rather than saw, several pairs of eyes go to her left hand, then returning to her face, having seen nothing, even as the barrage of questions started.

‘How can you not be called Cecil Maynard?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Cecil have you got married? And without telling us?’

‘What are you called then?’

‘I don’t understand...’

‘Everyone QUIET’ bawled Jack and there was immediate silence. ‘Let’s give Cecil a chance to tell us what she has to say without any interruptions.’ He turned to his 9th child and noticed the anxious look on her face ‘Cecil, we love you and whatever you might have done, nothing’s going to change that.’

‘I’ve not got married. I’ve just changed my name.’ she told them. ‘I’m now called Catherine Robertson.’

‘How do you mean you’ve changed it?’ asked Geoff ‘You can’t just change your name like that!’

‘Actually you can by deed poll,’ replied Cecil.

‘But why?’ asked Felicity, after a moment’s stunned silence. ‘What was wrong with Cecil Maynard?’

‘You mean we can’t call you Cecil any more?’ queried Joey, looking hurt.

‘If you didn’t like the name, we could have called you something else, without you going to such lengths.’ Con told her.

‘Or you could have chosen something far less boring’ added Felix and received a swift kick under the table from Steve.

‘It’s not that I didn’t like the name’ Catherine said ‘it’s just… oh, I’m not sure if I can make you understand.’

‘Tell us and we’ll try,’ said Margot gently.

‘I just wanted a chance to be someone different.’ she began ‘I’ve spent my whole life being "one of the Maynard children", “one of the Maynard girls” or even “one of the Maynard boys” if people couldn’t remember whether there were 6 girls and 5 boys or 5 girls and 6 boys – being called Cecil, it tended to confuse some people. Everyone knew who Len, Con and Margot were. And although you were the triplets, you were three of you together, but you all had your own identities. Everyone knew you were different, you looked different, you had different characters.’ It all began pouring out now ‘All my life I’ve been “the one with dark hair like Con” or “the one who comes between the two sets of twins”. The older boys, who you always referred to as singletons, they were all seen as individuals as well – each was a different person and looked different. But by the time I came along, I was just another addition to the long Maynard family. No-one was really bothered about who I was as a person. There was nothing particularly interesting about me – I wasn’t even a twin or anything.’

‘I was always on my own as a child.’ she carried on, as her family sat silently listening. ‘Felix and Felicity had each other, Phil and Geoff had each other, and I was stuck in the middle, on my own. Everyone had something special except for me. They were the triplets, or first twins, or second twins, or the one with Mamma’s gift for writing or singing, or the one who was going to be a doctor like Papa, or the clever or good at sports one.’

‘I knew you loved me. But I never felt that you knew me.’

‘School was the same.’ she continued. ‘I was always Felicity’s sister, or Len, Con and Margot’s sister. The mistresses would tell me I was just like my sister or cousin, or even some of them that I was just like you, Mamma. Or I’d be introduced to new girls as either Josephine M Bettany’s daughter or the niece of Lady Russell who had started the school, or Miss Maynard’s sister, or the head-girl’s sister or cousin depending on whether it was when Felicity or Ailie was head girl. I was never just introduced as "this is Cecil Maynard" without defining me by my relationship to someone else. Oh I did what was expected of me at school, although there were times when I felt like rebelling against it. I worked hard and, yes, I was head girl, but I always felt it was because I was a Maynard, rather than because of any merit of my own.’

Oh, poor Cecil! I always felt sorry for her being a singleton amidst the twins and triplets too.

But it's so hard to see how her family can react. If they go all embrace-y and "don't worry because we love you", it's just more familyness - which is what she doesn't want. Or does she?

#173:  Author: KateLocation: Ireland PostPosted: Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:42 am

Poor Cecil, it's horrible for her. I wish we'd seen EBD write the rest of the family, we only get to see the trips through her eyes. But drabbles definitely make up for it!

‘I don’t care that it’s not a fancy name, Felix, that’s not what I wanted. I just wanted to be able to be somebody and at the same time be just anybody.’ she blinked hard, to stop the tears that were gathering from falling.

‘But once you moved away from home, wasn’t it different?’ asked Charles. ‘I mean I can understand how it was when you were at school, Auntie Hilda and everyone had known you since before you were born, but you left there years ago.’

‘But don’t you understand, I couldn’t get away from being “one of the Maynards” people would ask, even just jokingly, if I was related to Pippa Maynard, the pop star, and then once I said I was, I was never seen as me any more, I was just her sister. Or I was Con Maynard, the best-selling writer’s sister; or even Josephine M. Bettany’s daughter. People never knew me as me, only as how I was related to one you. And that’s not all, if people didn’t know who you are, at some point I’d find out they knew one of the Russells or Bettanys or someone connected with them. I’ve never been anywhere where someone didn’t have a connection to one of my relatives somewhere along the line. I just couldn’t get away from the family – it’s like a mafia!’

The tears she’d been struggling to hold back started to overflow and trickle down her cheeks.

‘And it’s not that I don’t want to be part of this family, I do. But I want to be me. This way I can be known as just me, for who I am, not for who my relatives are.’

She pushed her chair back and rushed from the room. Len started to get up to follow her, but Joey put a hand on her arm ‘leave her for now Len, I think she’d rather be on her own for a while.’

My daughter has just become a leader in a youth group, for girls who are 9 years old.
one girl comes to our house all the time and really hangs around her.
I said to my daughter, look, she is coming as she needs attention, she is the fifth child of 8, (only 2 boys) and she is the fourth girl before the second boy (so no one special in the family.

They do not have twins however, although we do have neighbors with 2 sets of twins

I hope the whole family will be nice to her, but feel that is unlikely...

The meal fell rather flat after that. Everyone tried manfully to make conversation, but each time a topic was introduced it soon fizzled out. No-one mentioned Catherine’s announcement, but it was obvious what was on most of their minds.

Soon after the dishes had been cleared away, Len and Reg said their goodbyes and, taking Laura with them, walked back along the platz to their home. They chatted politely on the way home – Laura, understanding their wish to avoid talking about what had happened with someone who wasn't part of the family, readily answered the questions Reg asked about her work at the San and a discussion of new treatments kept them going until they arrived back at the Entwistle home.

After offering coffee, which was declined, Len showed Laura into the pretty guest room, checked on her girls, who were all fast asleep, and then she and Reg retired to their own room.

‘Did you have any idea Cecil felt like that?’ Reg asked his wife.

‘Not a clue’ answered Len as she undid her hair and started brushing ‘but then she was only about 6 when I left to go to Oxford, then I never really went home again for much time, and then we got married. She’s always been quiet, I never had any idea anything like this was going on underneath?’

‘She must have been bottling it all up for some time and feel very strongly about it to have actually gone and changed her name though.’ Reg commented.

‘I guess I can understand a bit’ Len replied thoughtfully. ‘There are a lot of us, and although it’s fun, I can see it could be overpowering at times to be one of our family, if she felt like that it’s no wonder she wanted to escape. I know I always felt responsible for the rest, especially before we had our own children, because I was the eldest.’

‘That’s not why you agreed to marry me before you’d even finished school was it?’ asked Reg ‘to escape from being a Maynard?’

Len put down her brush and slipped her arms around his waist. ‘Idiot! Come here, and I’ll show you why I married you.’

‘So, what do you think’s got into her?’ Geoff asked Felix and Roddy as they made their way out to the tents in the garden.

‘Women!’ shrugged Roddy carelessly.

‘Hey! that’s a bit harsh!’ protested Geoff

‘Well, let’s face it, you can never understand them’ returned Roddy ‘It’s not like it can’t have been the same for all of you to be “one of the Maynards” the whole time with people asking if you’re related to Phil or Con. So why’s it a problem for her when it’s not for anyone else?’

‘I don’t know’ replied Geoff slowly, ‘but she’s my sister and I would like to understand if I can.’

‘As Roddy said,’ Felix grinned ‘you’ll never understand her – she’s a woman! But seriously’ he continued ‘I agree with you Geoff, she is our sister and we owe it to her to try to understand what’s going through her head.’

Sorry, you'll have to wait a little bit longer for Joey & Jack - they're having difficulty finding the right words to express themselves Exclamation Hopefully tomorrow sometime if I don't spend too long at the dentist...

Margot tapped gently on the door of Jack’s dressing room and decided to interpret the muffled sound as ‘come in’. She found her sister curled up on the camp bed, hugging a battered old teddy bear, a soggy handkerchief balled up in her hand. Catherine lifted a tear-stained face to see who had come in – the muffled sound had been meant to be ‘go away’ and gave a sniff.

‘You don’t have to say anything now,’ Margot told her ‘I just thought maybe you could do with a hug.’ she sat on the edge of the camp bed and it promptly tilted and nearly deposited them both on the floor. Despite herself Catherine gave a little giggle.

‘That’s better,’ sitting down more carefully this time, Margot drew her sister into her arms and held her for a long moment. ‘We’ll talk about it tomorrow, if you like.’ said Margot, as, eventually, she released the younger girl.

‘Ok,’ replied Catherine, scrubbing her eyes once again.

Margot pushed a fresh clean handkerchief into her hand ‘Use this, then go and sponge your face and I suggest you go to bed – unless you want anything to eat, you didn’t exactly have much for dinner – I could go and scrounge something, or make you a sandwich if you like?’

‘No thanks,’ answered Catherine ‘I’ll go down and get something later if I feel like it, but I couldn’t face food at the moment.’

‘Okey-doke. I’ll leave you to get some sleep then, shall I?’

Catherine gave a wan smile ‘thanks Margot.’

Margot bent and kissed her and then left the room, closing the door softly behind her.

‘Did you go to see her?’ asked Jack

‘No, I could hear voices in there, so I left it for now.’ replied Jo ‘I think Con or Margot may be in there with her. Maybe they can help her more than I can.’ she added with some bitterness in her voice.

‘What do you mean?’

‘Well, here am I, supposed to understand girls, and I didn’t see what was going on right under my nose.’ said Jo ‘Have I been neglecting my own daughter for the school or my writing?’

Jack put his arms around her ‘Don’t think like that Jo.’ he told her ‘you’ve always been there for our children and ready to listen to them.’

‘But have I?’ questioned Jo. ‘Was I too busy for Cecil as she grew up – after all I had to spend a lot of time with Phil when she was young – was that at the expense of Cecil or any of the other children? I always had time if someone from the school needed a helping hand, but did that mean that I didn’t have enough time for her? And look at how we nearly forgot to get a room for her – if Len hadn’t said anything then we wouldn’t have had anywhere ready when she arrived and she’d be feeling even worse now than she does already.’

‘Because the thing is Jack,’ she continued moving out of his arms and pacing up and down the room, ‘she’s right, I don’t really know her, I don’t know what makes her tick, and, even worse, I never even realised it until now. When I think of the number of times I’ve ranted about parents who don’t try to understand their children and here’s me, just taking mine for granted!’

‘But you were there for her.’ Jack pointed out ‘she only had to say she wanted to talk and you would be ready to listen.’

‘But I shouldn’t have just waited for her to approach me and assumed that she could!’ replied Jo ‘I should have made sure there were opportunities; made the effort to make sure she was ok.’

‘Jo, you can’t keep blaming yourself like this. It’s not your fault.’ Jack tried to reassure her

‘Well whose fault is it if not her own mothers?’

Jack hadn’t seen Jo this upset since he’d broken the news that Margot should go to Canada with Madge all those years ago. Then, he’d managed to talk her round and see that the separation was for the best, but he wasn’t in a position to do that now. All he could do was to try to comfort her and calm her. ‘It’s not your fault Jo. Yes you’re her mother, but she’s an adult and it is her decision. I know it’s one that’s difficult for us to understand, and I want to talk things through thoroughly with her, but you can’t blame yourself for it.’

He took her in his arms again. ‘Blaming yourself is going to help anyone. We need to focus on Cecil, and see if we can help her to sort out whatever problems she has, not worry about whose fault it may or may not be.’

'I know you're right Jack' replied Jo, 'but what if people think we mistreated her very badly and that's why she's disowned us like this.’

‘She’s not disowning us’ Jack said, ‘she’s just trying to find her own identity. Now come on, you need to get some rest.’ He dropped kiss on her forehead and gently helped her into bed.

#213:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans/Leicester PostPosted: Fri Oct 22, 2004 2:19 pm

I notice Jack doesn't seem to be taking any of the blame... though I suppose what he's saying is actually much mroe helpful to Joey and probably will be to Cecil. It's true that they can't have failed her that badly if she came back to tell them.

#214:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Fri Oct 22, 2004 3:20 pm

Hmmm, at least Joey is feeling guilty about it - it would be far worse if she tried to dismiss it, or blamed Catherine/Cecil herself.

‘Who does she think she is!’ fumed Felicity.

‘What do you mean?’ asked Ruey.

‘Well, what’s wrong with being “one of the Maynards” for a start? Is she ashamed of us or something?’

‘Well…’

‘And what’s so bad about being known as Con’s sister, or Phil’s sister? Do you think she’s jealous because they’re successful and famous and she’s not?’

‘I don’t think she’s jealous of them’ replied Ruey, getting a few words in while Felicity paused for breath, ‘Maybe she just doesn’t want to be seen as riding on their coat-tails.’

‘Rot! I bet she’s happy enough to have any privileges that come her way because of it!’

‘Hey, come on Fliss, that’s not fair!’

Felicity had the grace to look ashamed. ‘You’re right. I know you’re right, but you know she’s always been able to drive me mad! I just don’t understand her. And why do it now, why spoil our family party – we’re supposed to be celebrating Mamma’s book and Margot being home again.’

‘And then Felix has brought Laura with him, and I tell you’ she went on, starting to get worked up again ‘if she’s done anything to put her off him I’ll never forgive her!’

‘Fliss, if Laura cares about Felix that way then this evening’s scene won’t make a difference to her.’

‘You don’t think so? Wouldn’t you be put off someone if they first time you met their whole family one of them got up and announced they couldn’t stand being part of it any more and had gone so far as to legally change their name!’

‘Laura’s more likely to be affected by the way the rest of us react to Cecil or should I call her Catherine now? don’t you think?’ asked Ruey

‘What – are you trying to say I’ve just got to accept it quietly? That she can get away with treating us like dirt?!’

‘Felicity, please calm down a bit’ begged Ruey ‘I’m not saying you can’t talk to her about it, even argue you point, but you don’t want to make a big scene do you? And remember, she is your sister.’

‘Well, it would be nice if she wanted to acknowledge that!’ snapped Felicity ‘Oh Ruey, you know it’s no use trying to talk some sense into me at the moment. You’re better off just leaving me alone.’

‘I’ll go and see to Evelyn then’ said Ruey ‘try to calm down enough to get some sleep, won’t you?’ she got up and left the room. Felicity sat there a few more minutes then got up and slipped out of the house and headed for the gate between Freudesheim and the school. Maybe 20 minutes or so with the punch bag in the school gym would help her lose some of her anger.

Thanks for the update Liz Very Happy Very believable too. I can totally imagine there being tensions between Felicity and Cecil when they were gowing up, being the 2 singleton girls closest in age.

The house was dark and silent when Catherine wok up with the realisation that she was ravenously hungry. She pulled on her dressing gown, stuffed her feet into her slippers and crept from the room. Out in the hallway a faint glow of moonlight from through an uncurtained window gave enough light for her to see her way downstairs, although she knew the house well enough to find her way without even that glimmer of light. The hands of the clock in the hallway indicated ten past three as she tiptoed past and headed for the kitchen.

At least she was unlikely to bump into anyone at this time of night, she thought. She wasn’t under any illusion that everyone would be as accepting of her as Margot had been, but she didn’t feel ready for a confrontation with anyone just yet. She was rather horrified, therefore, when she pushed open the kitchen door and discovered the light was on and the room was occupied.

She hesitated a moment, wondering whether to slip silently back upstairs and ignore her hunger. Then she squared her shoulders and lifted her chin in preparation, pushed the door fully open and went in.

Sorry to disappoint you Vikki...

‘Hey! What are you doing up at this time?’ she asked.

‘I might ask you the same question?’ replied Mike ‘Bella woke up and was scared, because she was in a strange place. We came down here and I heated her some milk and she’s just nodded off again. I didn’t want to move again until I was sure she wouldn’t wake up again.’

‘How do you do it Mike?’ Catherine asked curiously

‘Do what?’ asked Mike looking a little puzzled

‘Staying so calm, looking after the children on your own like that. Don’t you want to shout and scream that life’s not fair?’

‘Well, it wouldn’t make a lot of difference if I did, would it?’ asked Mike, reasonably ‘Bella and Quim would still need looking after. Anyway, they’re my children, all I’ve got left of Catalina, and I love them, so what else do you expect me to do?’

‘I don’t know’ replied Catherine.

‘They do their share for me as well,’ he continued. ‘After Catalina died they gave me a reason to keep going and to gradually come back to living. It took me a long time to learn that it was ok to smile, to laugh, to enjoy myself. They helped me know that life goes on.’

Catherine opened the larder door ‘I know Catalina would have wanted that’ she said, remembering what she knew of her beautiful sister-in-law.

‘It wasn’t just the twins that got me through you know.’ Mike added ‘Sometimes having a family around can be a good thing you know.’

Catherine’s hand paused momentarily over the butter dish. ‘It’s not that I don’t want to be part of the family Mike, I love you all and I couldn’t do without you, but sometimes being part of the Maynard family can be suffocating. I need to be able to get away sometimes.’ She sat down at the well-scrubbed kitchen table with her buttered roll and cheese.

‘But this isn’t a sometimes change Ce… sis’ Mike said gently, ‘this is an always change.’

‘Not really,’ she argued ‘I’m still part of the family, I’ve just got a different name. The Richardsons aren’t any less family because they’re not called Maynard are they?’

‘Well… no…’

‘So, in one way, it doesn’t really make a difference, but in another way it makes me anonymous or gives me another identity of my own.’

‘Away from the “Maynard Mafia”?’ asked Mike with a grin.

Catherine grinned back ‘Ok, so maybe no-one is going to wake up next to a horse’s head.’ she admitted.

Mike smothered a laugh so he wouldn’t wake Isabella.

‘I didn’t know you saw that film!’ he exclaimed ‘I hope you didn’t go to the cinema on your own?’

‘No I went with…’ she paused ‘with somebody.’ she picked up her empty plate and went to the sink, taking her time about rinsing it before she turned around to say brightly ‘Well, I think I’m going to head back to bed. Do you want a hand with Bella?’

‘Well, if you can get the door and the lights that’d be a help,’ replied Mike. They went silently upstairs and parted at the doorway to Mike’s room.

‘Thanks for listening,’ Catherine said in the low voice she knew from experience was less carrying than a whisper.’

‘No problem,’ he replied brushing a kiss on her cheek ‘Sleep well.’

‘You too’ she returned the kiss and flitted back to her bed.

Cazx - yes it was the godfather

There was a sudden awkward silence when Catherine walked into the dining room for breakfast the following morning. Fortunately the moment was very brief, as all attention was diverted from her to Joseph and Rob who were arguing and nearly overturned the milk jug. By the time the jug had been righted and Con had threatened her sons with dry bread for meals for the rest of the day if they couldn’t behave nicely at the table, Catherine had slipped into a seat between Margot and Steve and poured herself some coffee. She tried to stay inconspicuous throughout the meal and was aided by the presence of the children, as no-one wanted to discuss her name change in front of them.

After breakfast they all disappeared off to make beds, or help Anna in the kitchen. Con poked her head around the door of her parents’ bedroom and found Jo was still sleeping so closed the door softly and went back downstairs.

Len and her daughters arrived with Laura as Con reached the hallway and they went into the salon together to find the only occupants were Felicity and Catherine, sitting at opposite ends of the room and both looking rather flushed. A significant look passed between the two elder girls and, a few minutes later, when Jack came into the room it was to find various expeditions being organised. Felicity and Len were heading a group to for a walk to St Cecilie (suggested with a dagger-look at her younger sister), while Con enlisted Catherine to go to the Rosleinalpe saying that her boys had never been there.

The ensuing bustle kept the two of them occupied and away from each other, and when Joey descended the staircase later that morning it was to find a harmonious household, with the two parties about to depart. Margot, Charles, Steve and Erica had joined Con’s group and Roger, Melanie, Roddy and Geoff were with Len. Mike had volunteered to stay behind with the young ones, as did Ruey and Felix, Phil and Laura stayed with them.

Joey sat down with Felix, Phil and Laura, who were discussing music. Phil was giving Laura some inside gossip about a Swedish pop group who looked like they were going to be popular in England. After a while, the conversation moved on and Phil went to join in a rowdy game of snap at the other end of the room. Felix turned to Laura and suggested a short walk ‘nothing too energetic like the others, but it’s not far to the auberge and I can show you its secret.’

Jo opened her mouth to suggest everyone went, as the walk was easy enough for even the tinies to manage or be carried if necessary, but after a quick glance at her son’s face she realised anyone else would be de trop so she closed it again and turned to join in with snap.

All in good time. I'm away for the weekend after today, so I might get one more post in before I go, otherwise it'll probably be Tuesday.

So what were you and Fliss aruging about?’ Len asked conversationally once they were well on their way.

‘What do you think?’ replied Catherine. ‘You know we’ve never seen eye-to-eye, although I love her dearly we always end up arguing. And I guess this time I’ve given her plenty to argue with me about.’

‘Well, you could say that,’ agreed Len, ‘but then there’s quite a few of us struggling to understand why you’ve changed your name like that.’

‘I know, but, well, Len, what do you think? Fliss is worried that I might have messed up Felix’s chances with Laura, and I never meant to do anything like that, I didn’t even know she’d be here until yesterday.’ She looked anxiously at her eldest sister ‘Do you think I have messed things up for him?’

Sorry for spreeing - just time to post this and run... Wink Rosie's comment is a quote from my younger sister when my dad was in his early forties...

It was certainly a nice easy walk thought Laura, as she and Felix strolled along chatting. She made him laugh over a comment of Jackie’s at breakfast; as Len, Mollie and Rosie had been teasing Reg about getting old, Jackie had got all het up in his defence and told him ‘don’t listen to them Daddy, you’re only just past middle-aged.’ to the great amusement of Len, Mollie and Reg, although he had thanked her solemnly for the compliment.

The narrow path they were following opened out into a small shelf with a sheer drop down to the valley, and they paused to gaze at the mountains opposite. ‘Although we live in mountains in the Tiernsee, I never tire of looking at them’ commented Laura as they moved on, the path narrowing again as it ran between bushes.

A few minutes later they arrived at their destination on another, larger shelf and Laura looked around curiously, wondering what the secret of the place could be. Felix led her over to the fence and said ‘Listen,’ then he lifted his voice in a long, clear yodel. Laura was delighted to hear the notes picked up and thrown back at them, echoing and re-echoing.

‘You try something.’ Felix encouraged her as the echoes died away and Laura pursed up her lips and whistled a few notes, which were flung back as if there were dozens of fairy flautists playing.

They had the place to themselves and took it in turn to make echoes. Then Felix had one last turn, taking a deep breath he called out ‘Laura will you marry me?’

Twisted Evil

Felicity wasn’t stupid. She had seen her sisters in operation before and, even without catching sight of the look that passed between them, she was well aware of their manoeuvres. However, it wasn’t all that difficult to avoid being questioned by Con, she simply allowed Jamie and Alex to attach themselves to her as they proceeded along the platz.

There was no sign of anger on her face as she chatted cheerfully with her nephews, making them laugh uproariously at stories of their mother’s exploits when she was younger, and Con decided that the fresh air and exercise had done the trick. If Len or Felix had been there, they could have easily have told her differently, but as it was, Con decided that Felicity must have got over her anger and, hopefully, the argument itself had given her the chance to get everything out of her system.

So she gave up on the attempt to separate her sister from the rest and talk to her, and . although she would regret it later, very much enjoyed herself planning out the next chapter in her book as they walked along.

Len looked at her younger sister ‘If Laura’s a worthwhile person she won’t let yesterday evening put her off Felix.’ she told her ‘although she might understandably have some reservations about you.’

Catherine went red ‘Well, I didn’t know she was going to be there.’ she said defensively.

‘No I see that,’ replied Len, deliberately slowing her pace so they dropped further behind the others, ‘and I don't think you should worry about Felix and Laura, but what made you decide to change your name in the first place?’

‘I told you last night,’ said Catherine. ‘I needed to be my own person, not to be known and have assumptions made about me because of my relationship to other people in the family. I’ve spent years wishing I could be known for myself instead of somebody’s relative’

‘But if you’ve felt like this for a long time, why is it only now that you’ve gone through with this and changed your name?’ asked Len.

There was a long pause before Catherine answered. ‘Well, I thought maybe once I left school and moved away from home things would be different. But even with Maynard being a fairly common name people always ask if I’m related to either Phil or Con. And I’m not ashamed to be related to either of them, but people then had expectations of me, of what I’d be like and so on because of that and it was just getting worse and worse.’

Len shot a keen glance at her sister, sure there was more to it than that, but at that moment they were rejoined by Roger and Melanie and were unable to continue the conversation, although Len fully intended to take it up again at the earliest opportunity.

‘Felix’ began Laura, realising that he was looking at her expectantly and hopefully, like a dog waiting for a biscuit. ‘Felix, I’m really sorry, but I can’t marry you.’ She led him gently over to a table and they sat down.

Felix looked at her, with such a hurt expression she wished she could change her answer. ‘Why not?’ he asked ‘I’m crazy about you.’

‘Felix, I had no idea you thought of me of anything other than a friend. I love you dearly, but not in that way. You’re like a brother to me.’

‘Are you sure? You might change how you feel now you know how I feel about you.’

‘I don’t think so, and it wouldn’t be fair to you to give you hope that that might happen.’

‘Well is there someone else then?’

There was a slight hesitation before her reply ‘No, there’s no-one else.’

‘There is, isn’t there? Who is it? – that new doctor – Edwards?’

‘Felix, I’m not involved with anyone else.’ Laura said gently.

‘Then why did you hesitate?’

‘I’m not involved with someone else.’ she repeated, ‘If I’m totally honest, there’s someone I might want to be involved with if he was interested, but I’ve no idea if he even realises I exist. But even if that wasn’t the case, it wouldn’t make a scrap of difference to how I feel about you. I’m really sorry Felix, I never wanted to hurt you, but you’re my friend and I can’t lie to you.’

Felix tried to smile. ‘Well, all I can say is whoever it is he’s a fool if he’s not interested in you.’

Laura smiled back ‘Thanks Felix.’ She held out her hand over the table ‘Friends?’

Felix held her hand in his for a long moment before relinquishing it. ‘Friends.’ he agreed.

Sorry - going a bit slow at the moment - here's a little more...

When the whole family reconvened for lunch, several of them noticed that Felix was rather subdued and drew their own conclusions. Felicity alternately plied her twin with food and glared at Catherine. Len and Margot did their best to keep a general conversation going about their walks, ably backed up by Steve and Con, but the atmosphere was not that of the usual cheerful Maynard family meal. It was with a feeling of escaping that Mike went upstairs to settle Bella and Quim for a nap.

He read them a short story until they dozed off, then stayed in the room a little longer, gazing at them as they slept. Before leaving the room he glanced out of the window and caught sight of Catherine walking along the path away from the house. A moment later there was the slam of a door and then he saw Felicity following the same route. Even at a distance it was clear she was extremely angry and it was obvious she was trying to catch up with Catherine. Mike wondered briefly whether to leave them to it, then decided it might be a good idea for them to have a mediator with them. Checking the children were fast asleep he went to find his outdoor shoes.

Catherine had quickly offered to go over to Len’s home to get some bicarbonate of soda, as Anna had run out and needed it for her baking that afternoon. She was grateful for the opportunity to be on her own for a while and set off at a reasonable pace along the road. Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t register footsteps coming closer and closer behind her and was startled to feel a hand grab her arm and swing her round.

‘Felicity!’ she gasped.

Oooo, I hope Felicity isn't too horrible- or I hope Catherine gives her a biff round the ear 'ole!

Can I just ask: What is the name 'Quim' short for??? Shocked Or where did you find it?

Quim is short for Joaquim - as Mike's wife was Spanish, the kids have got Spanish names.

Sorry for the delay - RL intervened yesterday!

‘You know Laura’s dumped Felix because of you – you selfish little cow!’

Catherine paled ‘What do you mean?’

‘He took her out today to propose – well did they look like a happy couple at lunchtime?’

‘It doesn’t mean she turned him down because of me. Maybe she would have refused him anyway. Len says that …’

‘Len says, Len says … what did you do – run crying to tell her that I was picking on you?

‘No, it wasn’t like that!’

‘Oh of course it wasn’t!’ heavy with sarcasm, then ‘Why did you have to ruin everything anyway? What’s wrong with being a Maynard? Aren’t we good enough for you?’

‘I don’t want people to just know me as Con or Phil’s sister and not for me.’

‘So what if it gets you treated differently – let’s face it, people are usually nicer to you because of Con or Phil.’

‘Do you think so? Do you think it’s nice to have people want to spend time with you because of what your sister does rather than for who you are?’

Catherine suddenly let herself go.

‘What would you know what it’s like in the real world? You’re so sheltered here, still with the family and the school. This is a place where it’s never anything but good to be a Maynard, but not everywhere is like that! The world isn’t full of Chalet School girls you know!’

Tears were running down her cheeks as she continued, ‘You think that everyone will be nice to us because of Con or Phil? You don’t think that they might want something from us? That underneath the friendship they might just be using you? Because not everyone is altruistic, some people are just out for what they can get and sometimes you have to learn that the hard way!’

‘Oh, you’re just so melodramatic Cecil!’

‘I’m not Cecil any more!’

‘If I want to call you Cecil I will!’

‘Well I’m not going to answer to it so it won’t get you very far!’

Felicity was in such a rage that it surpassed anything even Margot had felt in her angriest moments.

‘Maybe I’ll just have to get your attention like this then’ she yelled and her open palm contacted Catherine’s cheek, leaving a white imprint that rapidly turned bright red.

Catherine raised a hand to her stinging cheek ‘If you hate me that much you should be glad you don’t share a name with me!’ she replied in a strangely quiet voice

‘I do hate you, in fact I AM glad if people won’t think you’re anything to do with me. I don’t want to have anything to do with you ever again!’

‘Fine!’ Catherine yelled back and turning blindly started to run.

Felicity opened her mouth to shout, but no sound came out. Everything suddenly seemed to happen in slow motion as something blue flashed past her and there was a screech of brakes.

Mike took a while finding his shoes and then spent a few more minutes in a pointless conversation about cars with Roddy before he managed to escape from the house. Felicity and Catherine must be quite a way along the road now he reasons. Neglecting the main path he cut across through bushes and trees and re-emerged to see and hear them standing a short distance below him. As he started to make his way down the bank he saw Felicity raise her hand and hit her sister. He picked up speed and a moment later was horrified to see Catherine stumbling towards the road. From his vantage point he could see a car careering towards the bend and lengthening his strides even more he raced down the slope and leapt past Felicity to knock Catherine out of the path of the oncoming vehicle.

Please accept my apologies for any technical errors in the next few posts - if any are really glaring, please let me know.

The car squealed to a halt and time suddenly returned to normal for Felicity. Mike had taken the worst of the impact, but Catherine was also lying unconscious in the road. Felicity started to move mechanically towards them, her face white.

The car doors opened and the driver and passenger got out. A small part of Felicity’s mind registered relief that they weren’t hurt, but all she could focus on were the two bodies lying there.

‘I’ll go and get help’ said the driver, who although shaken realised that was the most practical thing to do, apologising could wait. ‘I saw a hospital a little way back.’

‘Home is nearer’ said Felicity, not taking her eyes off her siblings. ‘Papa and my brother and sister are doctors. It’s just up that way on the left – the gate says Freudesheim.’

By this time she was kneeling in the road and was relieved to see both Mike and Catherine were breathing. Even in her state of shock her first aid knowledge came to the fore and when the passenger from the car went to move Catherine onto her back she said authoritatively ‘No, don’t move her, you may make her injuries worse if she’s broken anything. Don’t shake her or anything but can you see if she’s bleeding anywhere.’

She was feeling along Mike’s body as she spoke and her face, already white, went even paler as she discovered a patch of blood spreading across his right trouser leg. The material was already torn and she carefully pulled it open to reveal a gaping hole, with a rough end of what she realised must be bone poking through it, and pulsing blood. Swallowing hard on her nausea her fingers sought the pressure point at the top of his leg. She found it and pressed down as the stranger turned from Catherine to say ‘She’s got a nasty cut to her head which is bleeding a fair bit, but I can’t see anything else broken or bleeding.’

‘Have you got anything you can hold against the cut to stop the bleeding?’ asked Felicity, seeing at the same time that the flow of blood from Mike’s wound was slowing. ‘Is there anything in the car you can use?’ Out of the corner of her eye she saw the stranger strip off his jacket and then his shirt, which he bundled up and held against the cut on Catherine’s head. Felicity turned her attention back to Mike and realised with horror that his breathing appeared to be getting slower and more shallow. ‘Come on Mike darling,’ she murmured. ‘Don’t give up on us. Think of Isabella and Joaquim they need you. None of us can do without you.’ The stranger seemed quite capable of looking after her sister for the moment so she carried on talking to Mike, her gaze flitting between his face and the wound on his leg. Her fingers were aching from continuing the pressure, but she kept them firmly in place.

Wonderful story, I just hope Felicity gets what's coming to her, she really needs it.

All drabbles are stocked with trampolines (heavy duty) at the foot of the cliffs, cliff-hanging gear for every CBBer, and the drabble sitting rooms are well furnished with comfortable sofas, chairs, floor cushions, fridges, drinks cabinets, etc, etc, etc.

If any of these items are missing, I would suspect the naughty Middles, and we all know who they are, don't we?

#343:  Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Fri Nov 12, 2004 5:25 pm

Sorry, this is coming on a bit slowly at the moment as RL is being a pain.

Felicity was vaguely aware of the sound of voices coming closer and then Felix and Jack were beside her.

‘Well done Fliss’ commended Jack as he gently removed her fingers and placed his own there. ‘You’re not injured at all?’ Felicity shock her head numbly ‘Ok, can you go and keep a watch out for the ambulance then sweetheart? It’ll be here any minute now and then we’ll get these two safely off to the San.’ His hands were busy as she spoke and Felicity realised dimly that as Felix was checking Mike over, Margot and Laura were performing the same service for Catherine.

Still in a stupor she walked obediently to the bend in the road ready to flag down the ambulance. Jack spared a brief glance from his son and looked at her worriedly – she was obviously very shocked, but he needed her to keep it together for a short while longer and knew that giving her something to do would help. A few minutes later the ambulance arrived and after a short bustle the two injured were loaded in, Felix and Margot accompanying them.

As Jack was talking with the car driver and his passenger, suggesting they also come along to the San as well to be checked out, Steve and Roger arrived in Felix’s car and, pushed the damaged vehicle to the side of the road, out of the way. Leaving Roger to walk home again, Jack, Felicity – still in that strange unreal world – Laura and the two strangers climbed into the car and Steve drove them to the San.

Managed to get a bit more scribbled last night, so here you are.

By the time Steve pulled up at the San, Jack had introduced himself to the two men and had established that the driver of the car was Peter Channick and the other man’s name was Anthony Tinlow.

When they entered the building, Jack, followed by Steve, went off to find out what was happening with Mike and Catherine, and promised to ask for someone to come to see to the others. As the double doors swung shut behind him, Felicity’s control suddenly deserted her, as did her lunch, as she retched violently, vomited, and started to shake uncontrollably. Laura went over to her and put her arm around the other girl, looking around to see if there was anyone who could help. Peter offered to go to find someone and disappeared through the double doors. Anthony looked ruefully at his now-ruined trousers and went to help Laura support Felicity, who could barely stand. Peter soon returned with a nurse in tow, who took in the situation at a glance and hustled into action. In a relatively short time, Felicity was dressed in a clean nightgown and tucked up in bed. She had stopped retching but was still shaking and tears rolled down her cheeks.

Despite her medical experience, Laura felt at a loss as she remained with Felicity after the nurse had left the room. She tried to utter comforting words, knowing even as she said them that they were merely nothings. Seeing Felicity’s lips move in reply she leant close to hear the words ‘It’s all my fault.’

‘How can it be your fault?’ asked Laura. ‘You weren’t driving the car.’ But all Felicity did was continue to repeat the words ‘all my fault.’

Laura was relieved to see the nurse return, bearing a beaker of hot milk. The drink was held to Felicity’s lips but she lifted a hand and pushed it away. ‘No,’ she protested, ‘not until I know about …’ her voice faltered but the nurse nodded understanding and withdrew the cup.

‘I’ll go and see if I can find any news,’ she told them.

Left alone once more with Felicity, Laura laid her hand comfortingly on Felicity’s arm and the two of them remained silent, apart from an occasional sob from Felicity.

It seemed an age, but it was about 10 minutes later that Jack and Felix entered the room. Laura withdrew from the bedside and father and brother went to either side of the bed. Felix clasped Felicity’s nearest hand in both of his. ‘It’s alright Fliss,’ he reassured her, ‘they’re going to be ok.’

Felicity’s gaze moved from her twin’s face to her father's. ‘Really?’ she asked, her voice a faint sound in the quiet room.

Jack confirmed his son’s words. ‘Mike’s lost quite a lot of blood, but they’re giving him a transfusion to replace that. They’re operating on his leg now – I’m not going to pretend to you Fliss; he is seriously hurt, but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t pull through, although his leg will take some time to heal. Cecil’s not come round yet, but apart from the knock on her head and a few other bruises she’s not seriously injured and should be back to normal soon. But it’s thank to you and your quick action that Mike isn’t much worse than he is.’

Felicity shook her head and her eyes filled with tears again as she opened her mouth to speak, but Jack hushed her. ‘You can tell me what happened later,’ he told her, ‘although Peter and Anthony can probably give me a lot of the information. But for now you need to have some sleep and recover from the shock you’ve had, so when the nurse comes back, I want you to drink what she gives you – ok?’

Felicity nodded weakly, and Jack went to the door to summon the nurse, who reappeared with another steaming beaker.

‘I’ll stay with you until you sleep Flixy,’ promised Felix, reverting to her childhood name, as she obediently drank the liquid. Once again she nodded and Jack, after tucking the sheets more securely around her, gave her a kiss on the forehead, told her he was going back to check on the others, and left the room taking Laura and the obliging nurse with him.

Felix shushed Felicity when she tried to talk and sat close to her, his hand resting on the blanket over hers, the bond they shared needing no words. Felicity found the love, sympathy and concern in his gaze comforting and her eyes drifted slowly shut.

Jack made his way back through the corridors he knew so well. It was several years since he had retired, but no-one had questioned his right to be there, or to issue orders, although he had managed to couch most of them as requests. He looked in on Catherine to find her still unconscious, Margot sitting with her and after a brief conversation left Laura to keep Margot and Catherine company and, knowing Mike would not be out of theatre for a while yet, he went to find Peter and Anthony.

When Peter had arrived at Freudesheim with news of an accident, Jack, along with the three other doctors in the house, had leapt into action. He had been horrified when he arrived on the scene to discover that it was two of his children who had been knocked down, but the doctor in him had taken over to deal with the situation. Now, however, he wanted to find out what had happened and felt some understandable aggression towards the driver of the car that had injured two of his precious family. He hadn’t mentioned it to Felicity, she was already upset enough and he didn't want her getting in a worse state, but he knew that until Catherine recovered consciousness they wouldn’t know if she was merely concussed, or if there was more extensive damage. And if Felicity hadn’t been there, Mike would have lost a lot more blood, possibly too much, before he reached the San. He consciously stopped himself from pursuing that line of thought. Doctors couldn't afford to play around with that sort of 'what if'.

He soon found the room where Peter and Anthony had been taken and after a light knock on the door entered in time to hear the doctor with them pronounce that both were suffering from some whiplash, and would probably feel worse over the next few days before it got better. After some advice on resting and pain relief he offered to rustle up some clean clothes for Anthony, who by this time was clad only in his underwear and jacket, and left them with Jack.

‘How are they?’ asked Peter anxiously before Jack could speak.

‘Mike’s in surgery for his leg and has lost a lot of blood, and Cecil’s still unconscious.’ answered Jack, who had forgotten all about the name change in his anxiety.

‘And Felicity?’ asked Anthony.

‘She’s been sedated for shock and is sleeping,’ replied Jack curtly. ‘So I need you two to tell me what happened.’

‘It was all so fast.’ Peter told him. ‘I came around the bend and saw this girl walking out into the road – she didn’t seem to be looking where she was going. I braked, but there wasn’t time to stop completely. Then the man appeared from nowhere, right in front of me.’

‘He yanked – Cecil did you say?’ Jack nodded ‘out of the way,’ put in Anthony. If he hadn’t we’d have hit her head on and she wouldn’t have had a chance.’ Jack shuddered inwardly at the thought and was filled with a rush of pride towards Mike, it sounded like he was as much of a hero as Felicity. If the men were telling the truth there wasn’t anything they could have done to prevent the accident, he admitted to himself and his voice was unconsciously less aggressive when he spoke again.

Thanks for telling me.’ Jack said, then noticing for the first time how Anthony was dressed ‘What on earth happened to your clothes?’

Anthony went red. ‘He used his shirt to try to stop Cecil’s bleeding,’ explained Peter ‘and then Felicity was sick on his trousers.’

‘I hope there are no more emergencies then,’ replied Jack, with a slight smile, ‘or you’ll soon run out of clothes entirely!’

At that moment a young nurse entered, bearing a pile of clothes for Anthony. She cast an admiring look at the muscles revealed in his chest and shoulders as he removed his jacket, and handed him a shirt. Jack took advantage of the interruption to say ‘goodbye for the present’ to the two young men and went off again to check on his family before phoning Freudesheim to update everyone there on the situation.

So we still have to worry about poor Catherine... I hope she's alright! I wonder what Jack's going to say when he hears about the argument, especially if Felix tells them the real reason behind Laura's refusal. Felicity is not going to feel good after that I'd imagine.

Just a little bit now - more later if I find time to type it up

It was dark when Felicity roused from her drug-induced sleep to find a nurse next to her holding her wrist. For a moment she wondered groggily where she was and then remembered what had happened. The nurse was alarmed a sudden increase in pulse rate and looked up concerned, then saw her patient was awake.

Felicity tried to moisten her dry lips, and the nurse obligingly held a beaker of cool water to them. Felicity sipped appreciatively, letting the water flow slowly over her parched tongue, before taking larger gulps. When the nurse withdrew the beaker Felicity was feeling much better for it and opened her mouth to ask ‘Any news yet?’

‘I haven’t been told anything I’m afraid’ replied the nurse, ‘but as soon as I have a moment I’ll see what I can find out for you.’

Felicity nodded gratefully in response and the nurse left her alone with her thoughts.

Her head was aching. It was dark and she was lying in a bed that didn’t feel like hers. Panic engulfed her. This wasn’t right. She had to get away. She started to struggle and called out.

‘It’s ok, Catherine, you’re alright,’ the voice was low, comforting and familiar.

‘Where am I?’ she asked.

‘You’re at the San.’ replied the voice. ‘There was an accident and you got knocked over. Do you remember?’

An accident. A frown creased her brow as she thought. Did she remember? Her head ached. And why was it so dark? Of course, her eyes were still closed. She lifted heavy lids and was relieved to discover she wasn't in the dark. A familiar face with red-gold curls and blue eyes filled with concern was bending over her. She knew the face well. It belonged with the voice she’d heard. She had known it all her life. Why then didn’t she know the name that went with it?

Her gaze moved round the room and found another face. This one wasn’t so familiar, but she knew she had seen it somewhere before.

‘Do you remember?’ the question was repeated. ‘You got knocked down by a car and hit your head.’ Well at least that explained why it hurt so much. She managed to free a hand from under the sheets and raised it to find a bulky bandage around her head.

‘Don’t worry. It’s not anything serious. You bled a lot, but head wounds always do. Does it hurt much?’

She tried to nod and felt a thousand hammers batter against her skull. A moan of pain escaped her and immediately the well-known face was bending over her again. ‘We’ll get something to help with the pain.’ She nodded to the other girl, who promptly left the room. ‘You’ll be ok Catherine’ she said soothingly.

Catherine. That must be her name. Strange, she thought her own name would be familiar, that she would instantly recognise it, would feel an immediate connection with her identity but she didn’t.

Confusion and fear flickered across her features. ‘I don’t remember anything.’ she whispered.

About the same time, Felicity was sitting up in bed and her face lightened slightly when her twin came in the room.

‘Hey sis!’ Felix bent over and gave her a clumsy kiss on the cheek.

‘Felix, is there any news? The nurse couldn’t tell me. Do you know anything?

‘All good,’ Felix reassured her, ‘Mike’s come through his surgery ok. Dad’s with him now. Reg operated and you know he’s one of the best. And when I looked in about quarter of an hour ago Cec- Catherine was still unconscious but they thought she’d rouse sometime soon. And the two guys in the car have got some whiplash but nothing serious, although they’ll be sore for a few days.’

‘Hey, it’s all good news!’ he exclaimed as he saw her eyes filling with tears.

‘Felix, it was all my fault.’ she told him.

‘Don’t be silly, how can it be your fault?’ responded Felix. ‘From what I understand, Catherine wandered out into the road without looking, and Mike tried to stop her being hit by the car when it came around the bend. As far as I can see it’s just as well for her that Mike was there and just as well for both of them, especially Mike, that you were there. You probably saved his life.’

Felicity shook her head ‘But it was all my fault.’ she said, the tears now running down her cheeks. ‘Don’t you realise, if I hadn’t gone after her, if I hadn’t been there, none of this would have happened.’

‘Fliss you’re not beating yourself up thinking that if you hadn’t been there they wouldn’t have been at that point in the road when the car came are you? That’s ridiculous!’ Felix was concerned to see his words having the opposite effect to what he intended. Felicity was becoming increasingly distraught.

‘But it was all my fault!’ she gasped between sobs.

‘Hey, hey, calm down. You're talking nonsense you know.’ Felix sat on the edge of the bed and spoke soothingly. His words seem to have little or no effect so he took her in his arms, her head on his shoulder and rocked her gently back and forth until eventually the sobbing subsided.

I can't help feeling a little sorry for Felicity, even though she was being an evil little mare. After all, she was partly angry cos she felt Catherine's decision and the ensuing scene might have ruined her twin's chance of happiness. And now she has to face the fact that her temper could have contributed to the deaths of two of her siblings.

Felix is lovely though!

No, don't have a great deal of sympathy for her - she should realise that, because of her actions, her brother and sister may have died. That said, she should take pride in her actions afterwards. Hope Felix tells her allabout the reason why Laura turned him down, and hope Felicity speaks to Catherine.

Late that night, Jack sat next to Mike’s bed and rubbed a hand tiredly over his face. He had sent Felix, Margot, Steve and Laura home to get some sleep earlier on and was now the only one of the family still at the San. It wasn’t the first time he had kept vigil over one of his children. Margot had been very delicate as a child and had caused them great worry at one stage. Charles had had acute appendicitis when they were on holiday one year, and Phil had been in and out of this very San as a baby, suffering first from mastoid trouble and then from polio, apart from the usual childhood ailments they had each had in turn. But despite this, he had never expected to have three of his children all lying in different parts of the San at the same time. Never before in his life had he wanted so desperately to be in so many places all at once.

He ran a professional eye over his son. At least he seemed to be doing as well as could be expected. His breathing was even and his pulse was strong. But Cecil, or Catherine, seemed unable to remember anything, and Felicity had had to be sedated again. If they couldn’t find out what was bothering her soon, he was worried she might suffer a complete breakdown. He gave a sigh and dropped his head in his hands.

A moment later, he jumped, startled by a light touch on his shoulder.

‘Jo!’ he exclaimed in a low voice ‘What are you… Why… How did you get here? I thought you were staying at home until tomorrow?’

‘What and leave you to sit here on your own all night with only your worries for company?’ replied Jo. ‘What kind of wife and mother do you take me for?’

‘The best,’ replied Jack as she sat down next to him and he felt his burden lighten as she took his hand and gave it a squeeze.

‘So is there any change for any of them?’ she asked.

‘Not at the moment,’ he replied, ‘Felicity will be out until morning and then we need to go very carefully with her. Maybe you or one of the girls will be able to get her to talk without becoming hysterical again. Otherwise, I don’t know what to do.’ he gave a sigh.

‘I’ll speak to Len, Con and Margot and see if any of them want to give it a go.’ suggested Jo. ‘I’ll go to see her, but I think she might find it easier to talk to them rather than me, although we must let her know we’re here for her to talk to if she wants to.’

‘I just hope the girls, or at least one of them, can get through to her.’ said Jack. ‘She can’t go on like this. In some ways I’m more worried about Felicity than about Catherine and her loss of memory.’

‘Can she remember anything?’ queried Jo.

‘Nothing apparently’ replied Jack. ‘Her face shows that she recognises people – she’s seen and recognised Margot and Felix, but she doesn’t remember their names or anything else. It’s as if her life was a complete blank. She was asleep when I saw her, but someone will come and get me as soon as she wakes up again.’

‘Will her memory come back to her?’ asked Jo.

‘We don’t know at the moment.’ answered Jack. ‘We have to wait and see; give the knock on her head time to heal, and then we’ll know more.’

‘And Mike’s leg?’

‘Well it’s badly broken and he’ll be here for a while and then probably on our hands for a bit longer but given time it’ll heal. Reg did a good job.’

Joey stopped her questions and the two of the sat together, silently drawing comfort and strength from each other’s presence.

ETA because sharp-eyed Lesley spotted a mistake - thanks Lesley

Just a little bit...

Mike could hear a strange sound. He opened his eyes groggily and looked around. The room was in semi-darkness but he soon saw his parents – his mother’s head was resting against his father’s shoulder, His father’s in turn leaning against the wall, both asleep, open-mouthed and snoring in unison. He grinned to himself and drifted back off to sleep.

Catherine was dreaming. She was somewhere dark and she was helpless. No-one knew where she was and she couldn’t get away. She couldn’t move. She started to struggle and heard a mocking laugh. She struggled harder and suddenly woke up, soaked with sweat, her heart beating rapidly. She felt a moment’s panic again as she realised she was in a strange bed, then recognised where she was. She was at the San. They said there had been an accident and she had hurt her head. She couldn’t remember anything before that.

A nurse came in, having heard her crying out in her sleep a moment before. She looked concerned when she saw Catherine was clammy and shaking. After taking her temperature and checking her pulse, which was gradually slowing to normal, she helped Catherine out of bed, into a clean nightdress and sat her in a chair while she swiftly changed the drenched sheets and then tucked her patient back into bed, settling herself in the chair to keep her company for a while. The dream was gradually fading from Catherine’s mind and, gradually, she relaxed. Once she was calmer, Catherine assured her companion she didn’t need her to stay there any longer, so the nurse left her and went back to her station, where she scribbled something in Catherine’s notes, before going to check on her other patients. Catherine lay there quietly, trying to bring memories to her mind, starting with the faces she had seen today, trying to picture them with other surroundings, but she was unsuccessful and eventually sleep claimed her once more.
