#809:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 9:52 pm

With their own particular brand of devotion, mark you. Nags, threats, and hidden weapons- and that's just Jennie! Shocked Wink Laughing

But I would really really appreciate some more...*decides to try politeness*

#810:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 9:53 pm

Lisa, you flatter me! I haven't been so flattered since one of my pupils called me a wicked devious woman.

#811:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 9:55 pm

LOL! What did you do to inspire that stately compliment, Jennie? ROFL

#812:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 9:57 pm

I was her Housemistress, she wouldn't polish her shoes, and generally went round looking scruffy. So I took the right shoe from each of her pairs of shoes and polished them. That left her to polish all the left shoes, which she did, with many expressions of bitterness.

#813:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 10:00 pm

*g* I agree with her. That was both wicked and devious- but so effective!!!
*deeply grateful that Jennie was never my Housemistress*

But then, I was so good that you wouldn't have needed to take such measures! *smirk*

#814:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 15, 2004 10:29 pm

Lisa, when I'm in my Housemistress mood, I can find fault with anyone.

Ok - you've all succeeded in making me feel extremely guilty so her's a very little bit to be going on with

“Would you like another Brownie, Miss Annersley, I mean Hilda? Or some more Teddy Bear cake?”
“No thank you, dear, I really couldn’t eat another crumb.” Hilda looked down at Vikki’s anxious expression, “I must say, you are an excellent cook, even Karen or Joey’s Anna would have their work cut out to bake better cakes than these.”
“Oh, thank you , Miss Annersley.” Vikki with flushed with pleasure at hearing the head’s verdict on her afternoon’s labours.
They were interrupted by a tap on the door, and the staff baby hastily put down the plate she was carrying and rushed to open it.
“There is a visitor for Miss Annersley.” Miggi, one of the schools more longstanding domestic staff anounced. Vikki turned to relay the news, but Hilda had heard the message, indeed she had been expecting it. She glanced at the clock on the mantlepiece with an inward smile of satisfaction.
“I’ll be along right away, Miggi, if you could show him into the study.” She turned back to the room, “Thank you once again, Vikki. Now that we know you can bake like that we’ll be pressing you to produce plenty of cakes for the sale of course.”

“Him?” Vikki pondered out loud after Hilda had made her departure, “Surely she hasn’t taken up with a man at this late stage of life.”
Her thoughtless words were met with howls of derision, from the rest of the staff who were of the opinion that nothing, and no man, would come between Hilda and her life’s work, and one member of that august body took it upon herself to point out that it was hardly the done thing to make such vulgar comments about the head, leaving Vikki feeling extremely subdued,.until one kind soul tactfully changed the subject.

Thanks for your forebearance (I don't think patience is quite the right word)
I hope you think this was worth the wait, btw Carolyn, it did grow.

Jem stood up as Hilda walked into the study. “Ah , Hilda, you don’t mind me dropping in on you like this I hope?”
“Not at all,” Hilda replied sweetly, “Provided you have a valid reason for being here.”
Jem, who had been basking in a false sense of relief after Hilda’s first words, spluttered indignantly as she completed her sentence, “Now look here,” he began, “I hardly think…” He broke off with a wry smile, “All right Hilda, you win. You know why I’m here , I daresay you were expecting me.”
“Not quite so soon, “ Hilda looked at the clock, I expected you to be at least another five minutes.”
Jem chortled, “It’s not easy to get the better of you is it? I would think your pupils are relieved you’ve been otherwise engaged this term.” He paused to sip at the coffe which Miggi had thoughtfully provided, when he spoke again the levity had gone from his voice, “Seriously, Hilda, I know that Madge and I have let you down somewhat, we have had weeks to do something about the situation and we’ve just sat on it. Partly comes from not being on the spot I suppose, and then, you did have Con helping you out., I suppose we thought that made it all right. But there’s little point in me sitting here apologising all night, that isn’t going to remedy the situation. The thing is to decide what we are going to do now.”
Hilda allowed herself to give a sigh of exasperation, “You know what I want Jem,”
“But seriously, you can’t expect us to find two new mistresses within five days. It would be difficult enough in an ordinary school, but next to impossible for the Chalet School, and even if we could find someone at such short notice, I’m not sure that it would be a good idea. It hasn’t worked in the past, remember.”
“Prevaricating again Jem?” Hilda asked acerbically. “I did not ask you to provide me with two members of staff within five days, I asked you to take steps to recruit two new mistresses within that time. I’m as dubious about appointing in haste as anyone, although having said that, it is difficult to imagine what harm a new mistress could do within half a term. This isn’t a situation where you would be asking someone to take charge of the whole school, as when Miss Bubb was drafted in after my accident. As for Con, I rather think you have taken advantage of her good nature. She stepped in to help us out of trouble but she never wanted to teach, you know, although she has made a fine job of it, and she would have been more than grateful to be able to relinquish her duties to someone who actually wanted the position. As it is, I would hardly blame her if she decided against returning.”
Jem had the grace to look abashed, realising that he was guilty as charged. He remembered the evening when Joey had rung her sister to tell her that Con had volunteered to step into the breach. “That’s one problem solved for the immediate future,” Madge had said, “Con is well steeped in Chalet traditions and values, we can rely on her not to let us down, and she’ll keep the younger girls well up to the mark I should imagine, and it’s an opportunity for her to step out of Len’s shadow.”
Jem had grunted his agreement, and then completely put the matter out of his mind.
A sudden thought struck him, “I say, we have been paying her haven’t we?”
“Yes, Jem, that’s another matter that I saw to myself. I did write to inform you and Madge that I had put her on the payroll. Now, tell me, do you intend to advertise for the new staff, or is that another thing you would prefer to delegate to me? In either case, I insist on having the final say on who I hire, and the terms of their contract.”
“I’m quite happy for you to go ahead and advertise, if that’s what you would prefer, or maybe you would like to work out the wording and leave the actual submitting of the advert to me, or Madge of course. Or Madge could write it out if you would rather, I doubt that it would be much good me trying to compose anything which would likely to attract the right type of person, or anyone at all for that matter. I don’t know that much about the day to day activities of the school. You do realise of course, that this has to go before the board, but that will be a formality, no-one will have any objections. I’ll have to squeeze in a meeting while I’m in England next week. I shall be coming back on Friday, as you know, to speak to the McCartin girl’s parents. Hopefully the ball should be rolling by then. I wondered..” he paused, not sure how welcome his next words would be, “I wondered if you would be prepared to accept one of the younger mistresses from Carnbach, just for the short term, of course, provided any of them would be interested. I know they wouldn’t be your staff as such, and you wouldn’t have chosen them, but I thought it might provide you with some temporary cover.”
“Actually Jem, I think that’s rather a good idea. As you say, they wouldn’t be ‘my staff’ but they should at least already be imbued with Chalet School ideas, and it would only be for a short time. Yes, I will accept someone from Carnbach, provided they have the right subjects of course, and if, as you say, anyone is willing to come over here. I can’t help thinking that if any of the staff wished to teach at the Swiss branch, they would have applied to come here in the first place.”
“Maybe, but there is a difference between teaching in Switzerland for a few weeks and teaching here all the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a positive horde of people clamouring for a few weeks over here.”
“Let’s hope you’re right. As I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Con decides not to come back, and I’ve no idea when Jeanne will be able to resume her duties.”
“Before not too many days have passed, I would say. All the patients are well on schedule for recovery, and since they weren’t taking the drug voluntarily, there’s little chance of them having any cravings for it. Even Jenny McCartin is getting along fine now.”
“That’s something to be thankful for. I still find it hard to believe that such a thing could happen right under my nose so to speak, without me being in the slightest bit aware of it.”
“And as I said before, there’s no reason why you should have suspected anything. No-one could have predicted that Gwyneth would do such a thing. You trusted her, and you had every reason to do so, she had been one of the most valued staff for a good number of years. Anyway, what has happened has happened, and no amount of talking about it after the fact is going to make any difference. Now, who is going to take responsibility for these advertisements? And do you feel they should be advertised just in the English press, or on the Continent too? We do have rather more foreign pupils than mistresses.”
“Yes, I did notice that you were advertising the position in the San in the German papers.” Hilda mused, “I was quite surprised actually, after I got over being annoyed. We usually tend to draw our staff from England.”
“That was Phil Grave’s idea, but it’s something we should have considered before now. We can’t afford to be so insular, really.”
“No.” Hilda looked thoughtful, the school did have a few non British members of staff, indeed, Jeanne de Lachenais was one of them, but they were mostly confined to teaching languages, yet, there was no reason why a French woman, or German woman couldn’t teach other subjects, provided they were trilingual, and there was probably more chance of finding a suitable person who fulfilled that particular criteria on the continent than in England. “I can’t think why no-one ever thought of it before either. I’ll take care of the advertising, Jem, and I’ll make sure that it’s placed in all the major European papers, as well as the English ones, if that meets with your approval of course.”
“Certainly, as I said, it will have to go before the board, but I think I can safely say that it will okay to begin to put the wheels in motion. Now that’s sorted, then, I’ll be getting off. I f I don’t see you before I go, I’ll see you on Friday.”
“Very well, good night Jem.”
“Just one thing, what would you have done if I had accepted your resignation?”
Hilda smiled enigmatically, “Oh, I would have just brought forward my retirement plans I suppose.”
“Hmmm, but I daresay you knew there was no chance of that.” Jem grinned, as he left the study.
Hilda grimaced, not for anything would she have revealed the sudden doubts that had assailed her prior to Vikki’s tea party.

#880:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 1:28 am

The day had passed slowly for Hilary, after Miss Annersley had settled her in her own bed to sleep off the after effects of the storm of emotions she had displayed the previous day, she had been left pretty much to her own devices.
She had taken full advantage of the opportunity to go out into the grounds, seeing it as a chance to explore her immediate surroundings, but before long she began to tire of mooching around on her own, furthermore, although the sun shone brightly, there was a definite chill in the air.
For want of anything more interesting to do, she returned to school, where she curled up on the old squashy sofa in the fifth form common room with her library book.
Gwendoline Courtney’s tales of the Verney family, their play acting, their new stepmother and her illustrious brother held her enthralled for a while, but she was not so absorbed that she failed to hear the cheerful voices of the staff returning from their morning services. The staff, for their part, had no idea that Hilary was within earshot, and the manner in which they joked with one another came as a revelation to that young lady, who had hitherto presumed that they always acted as prim and properly as they did when they were on duty.
The obvious companionship displayed by the staff made her feel the loneliness of her own position more acutely, and although she tried to carry on reading, the spell had been broken. Eventually she put the book to one side and sat back to think over her situation.
She was much relieved, overjoyed even, to hear that Jenny was not going to die, and she knew that her form mates would share in that happiness, but she wondered if it would really make any difference to their attitude to her.
Maybe, she thought slightly bitterly, if someone had told them that Jenny was not at death’s door, matters would never have got so out of hand, but since the main cause, or at least the initial cause, of the split with her friends had been her insistence that Cora was not solely to blame for Jenny being admitted to the San, and since nothing which had happened since had caused her to change her mind on that point, she doubted that anything would change, although Flaurette at least had shown signs of softening her attitude. Hilary though, did not hold out much hope for any further overtures from her friend. Flaurette may have shown an astonishing amount of determination when it came to her lessons, but Hilary recognised that the smaller girl did not possess the strength of character to stand out from the majority.
In fact, she would have been surprised had she known what had been going through Flaurette’s mind on that last morning before the body of the school departed for their allotted destinations, and how much further she had got with her thinking since then.
“Oh well, I suppose Cora will still talk to me,” Hilary thought, “Although I’m beginning to wish I’d never had anything to do with her in the first place. Still, since I did decide to take her up, I can hardly drop her now just because it’s inconvenient. I wish she would try to understand other people better though.”
Having exhausted the topic of her class mates, Hilary returned to her book, finding it easier to concentrate once again. She was interrupted once more before she reached the final chapter, when Hilda Annersley, fresh from her visit to Jem, came into the common room in search of her pupil. “Here you are, are you feeling better today?”
“Yes, thank you Miss Annersley,” Hilary recited dutifully, feeling that her headmistress seemed a little distrait.
“Good, good, well I’ll see you later. Don’t forget to go along to the kitchen for your Kaffe und Kuchen.”
“Miss Annersley?” Hilary plucked up courage to ask a question.
“Yes?”
“You went to the San didn’t you? Everything is all right there isn’t it?”
Hilda raised her eyebrows slightly, she was not accustomed to having her movements scrutinised by er pupils, but mindful of what had troubled this particular girl she answered her evenly.
“No, nothing is wrong. I had to visit on another matter entirely. Jenny is still recovering well. Now stop worrying and run along to see Karen, she doesn’t like to be kept waiting, even if it is half term.”
Hilary took this as the dismissal it was intended to be and hastened along to the kitchen.
Karen had not gone to much trouble with Kuchen, she frankly felt that half term should be a break for herself and her staff as well as for the girls, and she didn’t appreciate having to turn to and provide for one errant pupil. Nevertheless, she was kind hearted enough not to show her feelings to the girl herself, although she didn’t go out of her way to offer her an effusive welcome either.
Even so, the meal provided a welcome interval in Hilary’s dull day. After she had finished her Kaffe she went upstairs and knocked on the nurses door, hopeful that that lady would be available for a chat, but she was destined to be disappointed since her tentative knock went unheeded. She was not sure enough of the nurse to attempt to visit her in the sick quarters, so she turned away and retraced her steps down the stairs, feeling slightly disgruntled.
Her mood was not lifted by the sounds of merriment which emanated from the staff room, and she felt a momentary twinge at being excluded from the fun, until she reminded herself that she really wouldn’t feel comfortable being in a room full of staff, and that the staff would hardly be so unrestrained were she among them.
She returned to the common room for a short time, but could find nothing to interest her, all in all she was more than happy when the time for abendessen came around. Once again she found herself eating in the kitchen, whilst the staff ate in their own room, it being pointless to heat the speisassal for so few people.
This time Karen did not see Hilary as so much of a nuisance, she had to cook for the staff so one meal more or less made no difference, and she was willing to talk with her for a few moments, but Hilary was wise enough to see that she was preventing the domestic staff from clearing up and she did not linger over her meal. Once she had finished eating she decided that she may as well retire to the dormitory, and she slipped into her bed with a feeling of relief that the long day had drawn to a close, “Although I don’t suppose I was left behind to enjoy myself,” she thought, as she lay her head on the pillow.

Goodness, poor Hilary! It seems a little harsh that she should have to suffer so much - but then no one in this story seems to get an easy ride!

Poor Hilary. I don't think they should ignore her quite so much.

*stands up, gives a big stretch*

Finally, I managed to read all of this (thanks for e-mailing the beginning Ellie) in about three days. What an excellent book (its the only word for it).

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry most of the time. I could shake Jo though. I'm feeling very sorry for Jack, if Joey hadn't fooled around with Roger they wouldn't be in half the mess they are in.

More please.

Just a little bit, I'll finish it off tomorrow.

It had grown dark before the Maynards arrived back at Freudesheim. They had stopped a couple of times, mainly for the benefit of little Hilda. That young lady had had a wonderful time, not only was she with both her Mamma and Pappa and Anna, she had been given ice cream and a delicious orange drink. And her favourite doll had been waiting for her inside ‘Minnie.’ All in all, she felt that that life was good, and since Mamma and Anna had been falling over one another to give her all the attention she wanted, she was certain they would come to the nursery and play with her when they reached home.
Joey had other ideas. “Poor little mite,” she remarked as she watched her baby clamber up the steps to the door, “She’s tired out. I’ll go and bath her and put her to bed.”
Anna raised her eyebrows slightly, in her experience Joey only ever bathed her babies when she had either her daughters or a party of girls from the school to help, or look on admiringly, but she made no comment, instead taking this as her cue to disappear into the domestic regions of the house.
As she began to busy herself with her pots and pans she became aware that Jack had followed her. “Don’t bother to begin cooking Anna, we can make do with sandwiches, and a pot of coffee, then you should take yourself off to bed, you’ve plenty to catch up on.”
Anna demurred, but it was only a token protest, she really was feeling very tired, and it seemed good to her to follow Jack’s instructions.
When Joey returned from putting a most reluctant and unco-operative Hilda to bed she returned downstairs and looked at the plate of sandwiches distastefully, “Sandwiches? Whatever is Anna thinking of?” She marched off to the kitchen, but by then, Anna had climbed up the back stairs and was safely ensconced in her own room.
“Sit down Joey,I told Anna to make a few sandwiches before taking the rest of the night off, she was up all night manning the phone when we were searching for you and Hilda.”
“Searching?”
“Yes, Joey, we had search parties out all over the Platz. No one had a clue where you had disappeared to, or what had happened to you.”
“Oh,” Joey digested this information, “Well, I’m sorry, but I didn’t ask to be attacked by a madman with a mania for prams.”

Thanks for the compliment KB, but I did mean that I would finish that little segment - did I cause some confusion?

“But you decided to go to Montreux without telling anyone where you were going, or how long you were likely to be, if we’d known that we wouldn’t have had to waste our time looking for you here, wondering if we’d find the pair of you at the nottom of a crevice.”
“Perhaps I did leave a note.”
“Do you think we didn’t look?”
“Well, I’m sorry, I told you that yesterday.”
“It’s easy enough to be sorry now, it’s a bit you didn’t have a bit more consideration earlier. I can’t think why you thought it was acceptable to keep Gw, Hilda out in the cold and damp. What do you think would have happened to her if you hadn’t been found so quickly?”
“Don’t Jack. I don’t want to think about it.”
“If anything had happened to that child, it would have been you fault.”
“That’s unfair, Jack. I didn’t ask to be attacked.”
“You had no reason to be there at all. If you’d just acted with a bit of common sense for once and stayed at home where you belong none of this need have happened.”
Joey stood up, “If you were being as beastly as this before I went, there’s little wonder that I decided to go away.”
“Where are you going now?”
“To my study. Or do I need to ask your permission?”
“It’s a bit late for that now, isn’t it? Do what you like, Joey. You usually do anyway.”

Ellie, I loved Jo's line about not expecting to get attacked by a madman with a mania for prams. Classic.

I take it from Jo's later comment about Jack being beastly that she's still suffering from amnesia?

#905:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Tue Mar 23, 2004 11:16 pm

Yes, Nicci, she's still a bit hay about all the details....

Hilda Annersley was a little disconcerted to discover that Hilary was no where to be found, later that evening. Aware that the the irl had been left to her own devices for rather too long that day, she had intended inviting her for hot chocolate in biscuits in the study before bedtime, with the objective of arranging a rather more interesting time for her the following day, as far as circumstances would allow.
When she discovered the girl was not in her common room she wasn’t too worried, nor when found the library empty, although she had hoped to find her pupil relatively quickly so as to spend some time with Emile Rouen.
When a visit to the form room, and the other common rooms proved equally unrewarding, and when Lesley Green informed her that she had neither seen Hilary all nor spent more than a few scant moments in her own room, she began to feel a little more concerned.
Lesley willingly gave Miss Annersley permission to check her own room to see if the missing girl was there, although the head agreed with the nurses own opinion that it was unlikely that Hilary would attempt to enter her private domain if she was not present.
That Lesley also refrained from repeating her earlier thoughts on the matter was something that Hilda was grateful for, especially since she was beginning to share those concerns.
Her worries were heightened when none of the other mistresses recalled seeing Hilary at all that day, although as they said, they had spent most of their time in the dommy sci rooms or the staff room.
It was only after talking to Karen and discovering that Hilary had eaten her abendessen in the kitchen that her worries receded slightly.
She returned to the staff room, wishing that she had some slightly more senior members of staff at the school. “I’m sorry, I know that this is your free time, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to turn to and have a search through the school for Hilary Francis. I’m getting a little concerned as to her whereabouts, and obviously this school is far to big for one person to search alone.”
“That child is being a perfect pest this holiday,” someone murmered rather unfairly, in a low tone. Unuckily not low enough to avoid detection by Miss Annersley’s keen ears.
“I hardly think, Miriam, that her presence has made one iota of difference to your own activities, up until now.” That was all she said, but it was enough. The unfortunate Miriam subsided, red faced and flustered.
“You don’t think, she could have run away?” Vikki asked nervously. She was closer to her own schooldays than her companions, and having not been lucky enough to attend a school which placed as much emphasis on the happiness of it’s pupils as the Chalet School sought to do, her own thoughts had turned in that direction on more than one occasion.
Hilda frowned slightly, leaving Vikki to wish she had held her tongue, but the truth was that the head frown was caused by her discomfort at hearing her own thoughts put into words. Seeing that the staff baby looked a little uncomfortable, she hastened to give her a quick smile. “I think it’s unlikely, she has had all day in which to do so, if that was her intention. I can’t imagine her waiting until it got dark.”
“Unless she thought she would have more chance of escaping detection.”
Hilda swung round to see who had spoken, but whoever it was had taken note of the fate that had befallen Miriam and the head saw nothing but a very prim and proper looking body of mistresses. “We can only hope that that proves not to be the case, but if she can’t be found, then we will have no option but to ask Gaudentz to organise another search party, though what the men will say is more than I can guess. It’s only two days since they were out looking for Joey Maynard. Anyway, sitting here discussing matters isn‘t getting us anywhere, I suggest we begin hunting. And one more thing, I don‘t want the child to be so, neglected tomorrow, I know this is your holiday too, but if one or two of you could spare a little time to spend with her tomorrow, it would be much appreciated, but that is purely a voluntary matter.”

OK, now Patmac has caught up I can add a little bit more Wink

Hilda, as she began to recheck the rooms she had searched earlier, wondered if she could really have misjudged Hilarys's character . She would, had she been asked, have staked her last farthing on the fact that Hilary would not attempt to run away. Now she was beginning to worry that her confidence had been misplaced.
She shivered slightly as another thought occurred to her, even if Hilary was still on the school premises, it did not mean that she had to be inside the building. . And there had been enough cases of subsidence in the grounds in the past to give her a another cause for anxiety.
But she was not left to fret about this possibility for long, the sound of hasty footsteps alerted her to the fact that some news was forthcoming, and she walked out into the corridor, with mingled feelings of hope and trepidation, to discover exactly what that news was.
Rosalind Yolland’s smiling face told her that earlier faith in Hilary had been justified, and that no ill fortune had accidentally befallen the child.
“You’ve found her?”
“Yes. I half remembered one of Joey Maynard’s stories, about a girl leaving a note in her cubey. Was it Joey herself, or did some other girl do that? Anyway, I thought I would go and check. There wasn’t a note of course, something much better, Hilary herself tucked up in bed and sleeping the sleep of the just.”
“In bed?” Hilda looked startled, “Well, I must say, it never occurred to me to look for her there.”
“And there’s no reason why you should have. Whoever heard of a normal healthy girl going to bed before they had to. Believe me, there are more than a few grumbles among the girls about the early hours we keep.”
“That hadn’t escaped my notice,” Hilda countered swiftly, “The poor child must have been bored rigid. I really must devise a plan to keep her occupied tomorrow.”
“I was thinking of attempting a water colour of St Cecile, I can take Hilary with me. She’s quite keen on art, it’s just a pity that she isn’t very good at it.”
“Oh, I’ve seen worse attempts,” Hilda smiled, “Though I have to admit that your predecessor would find her rather trying. But it’s very good of you to make the offer Rosalind. I hope she appreciates it, I rather think she will. Anyway, I’m sure you want to return to your own affairs, thank you very much for your help. I had better go and track down the rest of your colleagues and tell them they may stop searching.” She smiled warmly at the younger woman, hoping in some way to make up for her earlier scratchy mood.

#935:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 29, 2004 1:51 am

Both Miss Annersley and Rosalind Yolland were as good as their word, and Monday proved to be a much more interesting day for Hilary. She spent the greater part of the morning applying paint to paper, with results which were described as “unique” by the art mistress. Later, after the mistress had treated her to mittagessan at a small pension, Hilary returned to school to learn that she was to be allowed to visit Jennie in the San.
Nurse Green was no longer needed by the nun who had so dramatically turned up at the school two days previously, indeed that lady had recovered enough to be allowed out of bed and she had accepted an invitation to afternoon tea with Hilda Annersley in the study, thus it was that Hilary and the nurse finally made their belated trip to the san. “And don’t think you’ve got away with helping me bring my last few boxes back,” Lesley told her, “Nor with sorting them out after tea.”
Hilary grinned, taking more notice of the twinkle in the nurses eye than her words. As she was ushered into the ward to see Jenny, she suddenly found herself feeling unaccountably shy, but her school friend soon put her at her ease.
“Hilary, how lovely to see you, I’ve been getting so bored since I started to feel better. I know Mummy and Daddy are here, and they’re a pair of sweeties, but it is nice to see someone my own age.”
Hello Jenny, you look much better than last time I saw you, I was afraid you’d still be all ghostly white and big eyed.”
Jenny laughed at this description, “Ghostly white indeed, I’m not ready to become a phantom yet. I feel better than I’ve felt for weeks. I’m coming to school on Friday you know, but Mummy and Daddy want to take me home with them, to make sure I’m all right.” She paused, a slight frown appearing on her countenance, “They did say something about sending me to a school in England, so that they can be closer to hand, but they won’t if I have any say in the matter. After all, it’s not every school that has a doctor conveniently to hand to catch you when you feel dizzy, as I shall point out to them.”
“Oh, Jenny, I do hope you don’t have to leave the Chalet.” Hilary looked at her with a stricken expression.
“Well, as I said, I won’t if I have anything to do with it, now stop looking like a week of wet Monday’s and tell me all the latest. How’s Stella, and Flaurette, and Jane and all the rest of them?”
Somehow Hilary managed to answer Jennie’s questions and describe her class mate’s activities without mentioning the rift between herself and the rest of the form. She achieved this by elaborating and exaggerating all the funniest moments of the previous week, though these moments had been few and far between, and by describing in some depth the most difficult lessons which they had been subjected to. Her tale sounded almost convincing even to her own ears, and left Jenny giggling helplessly at some points, and groaning in sympathy at others.
“So what are they doing while you have the pleasure of my company?” Jenny asked, “Wait a minute though, isn’t it half term?”
Hilary nodded.
“So what happened to the excursions? Have they been cancelled? No, they couldn’t have been because Mummy said that no-one would be able to come and see me as they’d all gone away. So how come you’ve been left behind Hilary Francis?” Jenny adopted the tone and expression of the teacher she one day hoped to be. The incongruity of the situation caused Hilary to giggle, but it also had the result of making her lower her guard enough to admit that she had been barred from the excursions.
“Whatever for?” I’ve known people to get away with some pretty awful behaviour without suffering that particular penalty,” Jenny exclaimed with a blissful disregard for grammar, “And I can’t imagine you behaving that badly.”
“I just had a bit of a fight with Louise.” Hilary admitted.
“With Louise? About what?”
“The bathroom. We just sort of got carried away.”
“So is Lou still at school too? I hope you’ve made up, it will have been a pretty awkward situation if you haven’t.”
“Miss Annersley said that she couldn’t go on the excursion, but she’s not at school, she’s gone off with her parents.”
“Yes, I remember, she usually does. It seems a bit unfair that Miss Annersley should give you a punishment that only affects one of you.”
“Maybe, but if you were in my position, would you want to point that out?”
“No, I don’t think I would. Miss Annersley must have forgotten, she isn’t usually unjust. She can make you feel like a squashed beetle if she thinks you deserve it, but she usually makes everyone feel like a squashed beetle, not just one person.” Like all the girls who had been at the Chalet School prior to the earthquake, Jenny had the greatest of respect for the head. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t have something to say to Lou when she gets back.”
And as a matter of fact, Miss Annersley did indeed send for Louise on her return to school, where she pointed out to that maiden that her own behaviour had not only been far from honourable, but was positively dishonest. The idea of being thought dishonest was bad enough, but when the head went on to tell Louise that she was very disappointed with her, it was enough to almost bring Louise to the point of tears, and she vowed to never do such a thing again.
At this point Nurse Finning popped her head round the door to remind Hilary that she had only another five minutes before she had to leave.
“It’s worse than being at school, with all the silly rules they have here.” Jenny screwed up her face, “Though I was hardly in any condition to worry about that when I was first brought here. I know I told you all not to say anything, but I’m so glad that Cora blurted out what she did. I’ve never felt so ill in my life, and I hope I never feel that awful again.”
“But, wouldn’t you have gone to Matey, or Miss Annersley, and told them how you felt if it hadn’t been for what Cora was saying about what was wrong with you?”
“Cora? Oh, I didn’t really believe any of that, not really, though I did sometimes worry about it in the middle of the night, well I worried about it quite a lot really, but it wouldn’t have made any difference. I just hate doctors, I always have, since I had my tonsils out. Oh, I know that it was good for me in the long term, but my throat hurt much more afterwards than it ever did before, so I just wait until I get better by myself now. I didn’t even like going to Matey really, but she insisted that I went and had one of those doses of hers when she found out I wasn’t sleeping very well. To be honest, I sometimes thought that she was making me ill, I always felt better just after I’d taken it, but I felt awful every morning when I woke up. I hope she doesn‘t want me to keep taking it if, I mean when, I do come back to school.”
Hilary’s eyes widened as she recalled Matey’s abrupt departure after Jenny had been taken away in the ambulance, but before she could tell her friend that Matey had left, Nurse Finning had returned to hustle her out of the room, and there was only time for the two girls to make their farewells.
Jenny assumed a thoughtful expression after Hilary had gone, she did not possess the same insight as that young girl, but she was astute enough to realise that her friends jovial manner had been a little forced, and she had seemed to be a real urgency to her question about Jenny’s attitude to Cora. And the fight with Louise, that seemed very untypical of the calm and sensible Hilary she had come to know.

Thanks for that Ellie - hopefully Jennie herself will put an end to the rift between Hilary and her classmates!

Glad that Louise is not going to get away scot-free - always felt that to be most unfair and an indication that Hilda hadn't fully recovered - she has now!

I know this is very short, but for some reason I can hardly keep my eyes open at the moment - more later when I get my second wind.

Lesley thought, that since the staff canteen at the San was unlikely to be very busy at that time of day, she could stretch a point and treat Hilary to Kaffe und Kuchen before they set off on the journey back to school.
As she expected, the large dining room was virtually deserted, it was just unfortunate that the only other occupants were Doctor Maynard and his daughter, but if Lesley’s manager was perturbed by seeing her walk in with the schoolgirl he gave no sign of it, merely nodding in acknowledgement.
Jack had himself chosen to dine relatively early so as to avoid providing yet another source of speculation for his staff, ideally, he would not have chosen to eat in the canteen at all, but since he had no intention of expecting Con, lately released from the San’s care by Phil Graves, to take on the burden of running Freudesheim, or as he put it, acting as a guinea pig for Andrew’s benefit, it was the easiest solution.
He had been startled, the previous night, when Con, shortly followed by Andrew, had walked down the stairs, though less startled than his daughter and her fiance had been when they heard the front door slam and the sounds of the rest of the household returning home.

Well, that's got us all thinking, hasn't it Ellie?

#944:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Tue Mar 30, 2004 12:15 am

Thinking what Jennie?

She had left the San earlier that day, Phil seeing no reason, medical or otherwise, for keeping her there any longer, but although she had got through the withdrawal, the whole process, and the length of time she had spent in bed, had left her feeling far weaker than she cared to admit.
Although Andrew had no direct experience of her problem, he was a trained doctor, and it proved to be impossible to hide her enfeebled condition from his eyes, he had therefore over ridden her request to go out on an expedition in favour of taking her directly to her home, much to her secret relief. He had then proceeded to impress her
with his domestic skills as he had both prepared a light lunch for the two of them, and washed up the dishes afterwards.
“Every man ought to know how to look after himself,” he had replied to her comments, “In case the occasion arises, but I don’t intend to make a habit of it.”
“I should think not, it will my job to look after you soon,” Con smiled up at him, “You won’t have to do this after we’re married. You shouldn’t be doing it now. I’m sure I could have managed.”
“But since you’ve been in bed for more or less a week, you need to take things easy for a while. And I daresay there will be other occasions when I have to take care of you in future, it would be nothing short of a miracle if you didn’t have another day’s illness for the rest of your life.”
Con screwed up her face, “Well, I’m going to do my best to avoid it. It’s odd that Mamma and Daddy took Anna to Montreux with them though, especially if they’re just going for the day.”
“Maybe she had her own reasons for wanting to go,” Andrew shrugged. So far he had said nothing about Joey’s disappearance, but he had made up his mind that if explanations were not forthcoming from her parents in the very near future he would tell her the whole story himself, regardless of Jack’s instructions. Now that Joey had been found there was no worry that Con would make herself ill fretting about her missing parent and sibling.
“It’s odd though, that they should go at all when they knew that I would be coming home, still I suppose the Embury’s must have needed them urgently. At least I’m used to this sort of thing, living in a doctor’s household, which is just as well for you, my dear.”
“Oh, that’s why I chose you, rather than Anne, or Barbara, or Marian, or Jean, or……” Andrew was forcibly prevented from saying more as Con launched a cushion in his direction, with a surprisingly good aim.
“It’s a good job for you that I know you’re only teasing.” She said with mock severity, before continuing in a more thoughtful vein, “Daddy say‘s that being a doctor‘s wife can be a life of sacrifice. I think, occasionally that Mamma resents that, although she knew full well what it would mean before she married him. After all, she lived with Uncle Jem and Auntie Madge for long enough.”
Andrew reached over and placed his hand on her shoulders, looking directly into her eyes, “And you Con? You’re sure you won’t grow to resent it?”
“You’re worth any sacrifice,” she said firmly, and that was the last thing she said for a while as Andrew pulled her closer to him and held her in a long tender embrace.

Andrew had been sitting in the chair by the window, reading through Con’s latest chapter, when they heard the sound of the door. She had been perched on the edge of the bed, in complete defiance of Matey’s strictures. She had been gazing at her husband to be anxiously, before she had been ill she had been happy with her writing, now she had returned to it she was less sure, and she trusted Andrew to tell her what he really thought of her efforts, not what he thought she wanted to hear. Her look changed to one of sheer panic as she heard her father’s voice. “I didn’t expect them back this early. What are we going to do?”
“There isn’t anything we can do, except go down stairs and introduce ourselves.”
“But, you know what they will be thinking, us being here together in my bedroom. They’re sure to jump to conclusions.”
“It doesn’t matter what they think, we know that we haven’t been doing anything improper.”
“Well. Not much anyway.” Con went slightly pink as she remembered the hugs and kisses which they had shared earlier, “But you know how Pappa feels about that sort of thing, or at least, if you don’t know, I think you’re about to find out.” She stood up and opened the door, pulling it back quickly as she heard the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs, but Joey passed by with her baby without even noticing that the door was slightly ajar.
“Damn.”
“Con!” Andrew assumed a mock shocked expression, though truth to tell, he was rather shocked to hear his bride to be utter such an expletive, mild as it was.
“Well, honestly, I wanted to get it over with. I don’t want to have to explain to each of them separately. Parents.”
“It might help if we do actually get my bed made up, as we intended in the first place, by that time your mother should be downstairs again.”
“I suppose it would. I don’t want her to catch us up here though.” Con pulled open the door again, nodding in satisfaction as she heard the sound of running water in the bathroom, “Come on, she won’t hear us now.”
As they crept along the corridor the sound of Hilda’s young voice, expressing her displeasure in no uncertain terms, greeted them.
“Someone isn’t very happy.” Andrew whispered.
“Neither of them are very happy,” Con corrected him as Joey’s voice correspondingly rose in volume, “Drat the child, why does she have to start playing up now?”
“She’s a child, that’s her job.” Andrew murmured in an attempt to lighten her mood.
Con glared at him as she pulled some sheets out of the linen cupboard, slightly annoyed by his failure to treat the situation with the full gravity required.
Ho looked at her complacently, aware that her parents owed her far more explanations than she owed them.

Jack’s surprise when Con walked into the room was such that Con couldn’t be blamed for believing that her parents had forgotten about her, but her father’s obvious delight in seeing her up and about once more was, almost, enough to soothe the hurt. Joey, hearing her daughters voice, also rushed out of her study and welcomed her effusively.
Con, for her part was taken aback by her mother’s appearance, “Your hair!” She shrieked.
“Yes, I do have hair, though rather less of it, and it suits me better I think.” Joey said complacently.
“But, I never thought you’d have your hair cut, and what’s happened to your face?”
“Oh, I fell over, nothing unusual there you might think, but never mind me, what about you?”
Andrew chose this moment to make his presence known, Joey in the midst of exclaiming over Con’s improved appearance scarcely noticed his entrance. Jack was not so absorbed, “What is the meaning of this?” He rose from his seat, a severe frown on his face.
“No meaning at all,” Andrew faced him calmly, “Beyond the fact that someone had to look after Con, and there was no-one else here to do so.” He would have said more, at that point, had it not been for the fact that Con, realising what was happening, wriggled free from her mother’s hug and ventured to add her own explanations.
“We just went upstairs to make up a b,” She stumbled over the word bed and quickly amended her sentence, feeling herself growing pink, “We went to sort out somewhere for Andrew to sleep. I’ve put him in Roger’s room, since it’s aired and he isn’t going to be needing it again, not for a while anyway. That is all right, isn’t it?”
“Of course it is,” Joey turned to smile warmly at her future son-in-law, grateful that at least on of her daughters was acting as she ought. “Have you got everything you need Andrew? Did you get towels, Con? No? Then I’ll go and find some for you.” She whirled out of the room in a manner which left the three remaining people feeling somewhat breathless.
They stood in silence for a moment, until Con, who out of all of them was less troubled by other thoughts, felt moved to ask after the Embury’s.
“Eh?” Jack was slightly taken off guard.“Oh, I thought that was why you went to Montreux.”
“Er, not exactly. Your mother went to see Winefred, on Friday morning, but, she, er, someone tried to rob her near the railway station and she was slightly injured in the struggle,”
“So that’s what happened to her face.” Con broke in, “And her hair, is that why it had to be cut?”
“No, she did that herself, or rather she went to a salon, but never mind that. She was found quickly, and taken to hospital, along with Hilda, who wasn’t injured, thankfully--”
“Auntie Hilda? What was she doing there?”
“Not Auntie Hilda. Your sister, neither of us want reminding of Gwyneth Lloyd,” Jack said softly, “And I’m sure you don’t either.”
“Why shouldn’t I? But what about Mamma? She is all right isn’t she?”
“She’s fine, Con, haven’t you just seen her with your own eyes? Except, she can’t remember the attack, which is probably a blessing, and she can’t remember anything at all that happened that day, but there is no long lasting harm. Anyway, as I said, she was taken to hospital, but having gone off on the spur of the moment, and expecting to be back the same night, she didn’t tell anyone where she had gone. We had a few anxious hours before the hospital tracked me down. When they did, Anna and I went straight to Montreux to see her, and bring her home, as soon as we were able. Which was this morning, after she was allowed to leave the hospital. But there’s no need to worry, Con. She will be all right. If she’s fit enough to travel she’s going to go back to England with your uncle Jem tomorrow, and stay with your Auntie Madge for a short while for a rest.”
“Yes, I should think you she needs it.” Con said soberly, “Poor Mamma, I must go to her.” She left the room and went up the stairs after her mother, though at a rather more measured pace.
Jack waited until he was sure that Con was out of earshot before he spoke again. “I’m not so sure that it wouldn’t be a bad idea if Con were to go with her.” He said to Andrew.
“Why?”
“The man who attacked Joey, as I said she remembers nothing, but I saw a picture, an artists impression from eye witness accounts. It was Reg Entwhistle. And I‘m worried that he might be intent on wreaking vengeance on my family.”

Con found Joey sitting on the edge of the bed, gazing into space. “Mamma, is something wrong.”
“No, silly,” Joey pulled herself together quickly, “I was just thinking.”
“About what happened in Montreux? Daddy just told me, oh, Mamma, what an awful thing to happen to you.”
“Yes, but since I can’t remember anything about it, there isn’t much point in discussing it. Now, sit down and tell me about you and Andrew, have you decided how many people you’re going to invite?”
“No, we haven’t really talked about it all. I do want to be married to Andrew, but I sometimes wish I could do away with the wedding, it just seems so daunting, all the organisation.”
Joey looked at her in surprise, but before she had the opportunity to comment, it was Con’s turn to change the subject, “Mamma, what’s all this business about changing Gwynie’s name in aid of? Why don’t you want reminding of Matey, and why shouldn’t I want to be reminded of her?”
“Goodness, child, has no-one explained to you yet?” Joey exclaimed.
“I’m not a child, mother, and I’m getting rather tired of being treated as though I were.”
Joey gave her daughter a long look, “No you’re not a child, Con, but in one way you’ll always be my little girl, even when you become a Mamma yourself, and when you do, you’ll understand what I mean, but to answer your question, it was Matey that made you ill. You remember the lotion she gave you to help you sleep?”
“Of course I do, but surely you don’t mean it was poisonous? Why would Matey want to hurt me?” Con looked at her, expressions of bewilderment, fear and horror, transforming her features.
“Of course she didn’t want to hurt you, it wasn’t poison Con, I think I’m going to have to examine your reading if that’s the kind of conclusion you jump to.” Seeing that her attempt to inject a bit of lightness into the conversation had failed, Joey continued her explanation, “It contained a powerful drug, one which your body became dependent on. It wasn’t taking the lotion that made you ill, it was when you stopped taking it. Your body---”
“So that’s what Eugen meant.” Con interspersed, “He said something about opiates, and I got upset, then he and daddy had an argument, I think. I sometimes have trouble working out what was real and what was in my mind. I just know that I don’t want to feel like that again.”
“Eugen’s dead.” The words hammered into Joey’s brain as surely as if they had been spoken, she almost wondered if she herself had said them out loud, but there was no reaction from Con.
“But I was only person to take it,” Con’s thoughts had veered off in another direction, “Matey dished it out to almost everyone, at one time or another, why, I’m sure you must have taken it yourself, so why was it only me that was affected?”
“As you say, I almost certainly have taken it at one time or another, but not for such a long period of time as you. But you most certainly were not the only person to be affected, Jeanne de Lachenais was the other member of staff to suffer, as did two or three of the girls.”
“Oh no, Mamma, that’s awful, which girls? Are they all right now?”
“There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be, after all, you’re over it now. As for which girls, one of them was your cousin Daphne, but apart from that, I couldn’t say. With one thing and another I haven’t had much to do with the school these last few days.”
“No, of course not.” Con stood up, “I’m sorry, Mamma, but I need to go and think all this through. At the moment, I rather think that I would prefer not to talk about it again. Except, she isn‘t still here is she? At the school?”
“No, Con, she is not. And she won’t be coming back.”

“Are you sure you’re not being a little overdramatic?” Andrew replied to Jack’s statement, “Yes, Entwhistle did attack Con in the hospital, but from what you say he certainly had no idea that she was a patient, so it certainly wasn’t premeditated, and as for Mrs Maynard, how would he know she was in Montreux, you didn’t even know where she was. Isn’t it just as likely that he saw an unexpected opportunity and took it? You say she was robbed, well, I doubt that he has a great deal of money at the moment, and I daresay he feels that you owe him something and this was one way of recovering the debt, or part of it.”
“I owe him nothing.” Jack snapped, “He will be paid up until the moment he stopped working, plus any other monies that are due to him, which is a damn sight more than he deserves.”
“That isn’t a lot of use to him at the moment though, is it? And as I said, he had no reason to expect Con’s mother to be in Montreux.”
“Unless she arranged to meet him.” If possible, Jack would have retracted his words as soon as he had spoken, but the thought which had been foremost in his mind since he had identified Joey’s attacker refused to be suppressed any longer.
“Why on earth would she do that?”
“Because she’s always had a soft spot for him, ever since he was a boy. Because she had no other reason to be in Montreux. If he asked her to meet him, she would go.”
“I thought you had friends in the town.”
“We do, but according to Oliver Knowles they went away at the beginning of the week, and they won’t be back until next weekend.”
“Maybe Mrs Maynard didn’t know that.”
“Would you travel all that way on the off chance that someone would be at home? Wouldn’t you check first? Anyway, I would still feel happier if Con was out of the way.”
“Personally, I doubt that he is still in the area, he must know that he’s a wanted man, he isn’t going to wait around to be caught, and frankly, there’s nothing to stop him from returning to England. That’s what I would do if I were him. And soft spot or not, I can’t imagine any woman wanting to meet up with the person who assaulted her daughter. I think that would pretty effectively kill any soft spots she might have had.”
“Joey doesn’t know about that. Only that Entwhistle attacked one of the patients, and she didn’t know that until yesterday.”
Andrew regarded his future father in law with amazement, “Do you always make a habit of keeping secrets from your women folk? Oh no doubt you have some old fashioned and misguided notion of chivalry, but that really doesn’t apply these days. I intend to tell Con everything you have told me and she can decide for herself what she wants to do. I’ll leave it to your own conscience to decide what you tell your own wife.”
Jack flushed angrily, but rather than a hot tempered eruption, his rage was expressed in icy cold low tones, “You are not married to Con yet.”
Andrew took two paces towards him, drawing himself up to his full height he responded in kind, “Maybe not, but I will marry Con, with or without your blessing, and there is nothing you can do to stop that.”
It was Jack who faltered first, as he wavered under the challenge emanating from the younger man’s eyes. “Very well, tell Con as much as you wish, as you say, she has the right to make her own decisions, but before you say too much, please remember that it was she who didn’t want her mother to know about the assault.”
Andrew returned to his seat showing no trace of the berves that had assailed him. Jack gave him a look of grudging respect before offering him a glass of whiskey, an offer which was declined. The older man gave a slight shrug before pouring himself a generous measure.
For his part, Andrew was beginning to regret his decision to join the staff of the San, at the time it had seemed to be an ideal scenario, there were more than enough climbing and skiing accidents each year to allow him to specialise in that area, although he had no doubt that he could have found a similar position in either an English hospital, or indeed in his native New Zealand, but the position at the San had the added advantage of allowing his bride to remain close to her family home, something which both she and her mother had seemed keen on. He had not taken into consideration the opportunity for conflict which could arise from working for his father in law, where personal disagreements could be carried over to work, or vice versa. There was no doubt that Jack Maynard could make the experience a deeply unpleasant one, if he chose to do so.

I have this awful feeling that all this business could split Con and Andrew up. Please don't let that happen Ellie.

Con went back to her own room and threw herself down on her bed, usually the last member of the family to be roused to anger, she was more angry than she could express in words. Her question, as to whether Matey was still at school, had not been asked out of fear of seeing the woman again, if the answer had been affirmative there was little doubt that she would have marched straight over to the school and attempted to tear Gwyneth Lloyd apart limb from limb.
Denied that outlet, she could only lie back and brood upon matters.

“Why on earth did no - one tell the poor girl what was wrong?” Joey thought to herself as her daughter walked away, “Though I suppose I’m as much to blame as anyone else as far as that goes. I just assumed that someone had told her, she didn’t ask me what was wrong with her. Anyway, she know now. So, Eugen and Jack had an argument, I don’t remember anything about that, but why do I keep thinking Eugen’s dead? Surely Jack didn’t? No, that’s ridiculous, we’ve been married well over twenty years, why on earth would I start thinking that. One things for sure, he isn’t going to stop me from going to England with Jem, I’ll find out from him what’s been going on.”
She idly ran her hands over the batch of towels, smiling secretly to herself as she recalled the happenings that had occurred the last time she had made up a room for an unexpected visitor, then she frowned as she recalled the ensuing argument she and Roger had had. “And he cleared off back to England without apologising, without saying goodbye even. But, didn’t something else happen, after that? Oh, am I ever going to get my memory back? If that doctor hadn’t explained what was happening to me I would think I was gong mad. It almost feels like I am anyway, and from the way Jack’s acting it’s me that’s done something terrible, though I’m sure I couldn’t have.”

Miss Annersley finished pouring the coffee, and passed the cup over to her guest along with the plate of Karen’s special biscuits.
“It really is kind of you to allow me to stay here so long, especially considering all the trouble I’ve caused you,” the visitor began. “I really am grateful and if there is anyway in which I can repay you, be assured that I will.”
“On the contrary, it is I who owes you a debt of gratitude,” Hilda replied, “I can never thank you enough for returning Nell Wilson’s possessions, especially since you appear to have suffered considerable hardship to do so. I have to say that I’m surprised your order didn’t make rather better travel arrangements for you.”
Emile Rouen looked away quickly, “This really is delicious,” she nibbled at her biscuit, “I had forgotten just how good food could taste. We went in for rather plainer fare at the convent.”
Hilda noted her visitors use of the past tense, but not knowing what it signified she let it pass, for the moment.
“Oh yes, we’re very fortunate to have Karen’s services, she’s an excellent cook, and she keeps the kitchen running like clockwork, but we don’t have such treats everyday, unfortunately, though it maybe just as well, otherwise we should all be as fat as little pigs.”
“I find it hard to imagine you as a little pig,” the nun ran an experienced eye ober the woman sitting before her, noting that she appeared to have lost too much weight rather too quickly in the recent past.
“I certainly wouldn’t care for such a fate,” Hilda smiled, “Though there are other’s, far worse.”
“Yes.” Both women sat lost in their own thoughts for a few moments, before Hilda broke the silence.
“I owe you for far more than you’re journey here. When I received Nell’s letter, I, well, I was lost to the world. Knowing that I was in her final thoughts, knowing that she would be waiting for me….” She left her other thoughts unvoiced, assured of the other visitors understanding.
“You know, of course, that you are welcome to stay here for as long as it takes for you to recover your strength. When are you expected back? If you are going to be delayed you may use the telephone to contact your Mother Superior.”
Emile sat up straight, “You may as well know, I’m not going back. The other members of the Order do not know I am here, in fact, I came against their express wishes, that is why my journey was so difficult. I wanted to return your friend’s possessions to you, personally, but also, I heard there was a big Sanatorium in the area, and it occurred to me that they may be able to offer me employment.”
“But, your vocation.” Although a small part of Hilda’s mind had been prepared for such a declaration it still came s a shock to hear the nun state the facts so bluntly.
“Vocation? I have a vocation for nursing, the rest, that was just a delusion. There is no God, Miss Annersley, no loving Father would inflict the suffering I have seen upon his children. I have wasted enough of my life dedicating myself to a myth, I am not going to waste whatever years may be left to me on this earth. I can nurse the sick as effectively in the real world, maybe more so, since I will now be doing it for their own sakes, not to fulfil my role as a Bride of Christ.”
Hilda was stunned, both by the nun, the ex-nun’s words, and by the vehemence of her tone.
“I’ve shocked you, I’m sorry, but after all the kindness you’ve shown me, you of all people, have the right to know.”

I'm sorry - I didn't realise it was a cliff! There is a little bit more, but I think my ambitions are over reaching my abilities......

“The right to know what dear?” Hilda had taken time to consider her words, but she still had no idea how they would be received, “The right to know that you have left the Convent? Or the right to know that you have lost your faith?”
“I suppose, I meant leaving the Convent, but the two are connected I suppose. I’m sick of it all. All the excuses, that it’s God’s will, that His purposes are hidden from us, that He works in mysterious ways. It’s nothing but a pretence, a sap to make us feel better, and to keep us in our place. Karl Marx was right about that, at least.”

“Even if that were true, would it necessarily be such a bad thing? What is so terrible about having something to hang on to that brings you comfort?”
“It’s immature, it prevents us from looking after ourselves, from making the most of our time on this earth. We are alone in the universe, there is no kindly Father watching over us, and the sooner we realise that the better it will be.”
Hilda was silent, remembering the long empty days after Bill’s death, when she too had doubted His existence, the days when she had felt so alone and desolate.
“I mean,” the ex-nun continued, “Take your friend, I knew her for only a short time, but she was, I believe, an inspirational woman. What ‘greater purpose’ could be served by her death?”
“Do you really believe it would have been better for her to live, suffering such pain?”
“No. I believe it would have been better if there had never been an earthquake. You were not there, you didn’t see the scenes of anguish, the pain that I saw. That earthquake served no greater purpose.”

Thank you Pat.

In a busy street in Paris, another Nun, a Nun who was totally fulfilled by her vocation, rushed to the aid of a young man who had staggered out onto the road, directly in front of a small lorry. Ignoring the gesticulations of the truck driver, who was loudly protesting that it was not his fault, that there had been no chance of avoiding le stupide, idiot, imbécile, she leant over the victim and held her fingers to his neck, gratified to feel, albeit faintly and too fast, the fluttering of a pulse. The man opened his eyes for a brief instant, before, with a murmured exhalation, they closed again.

Ellie, don't you ever, ever doubt your ability to write. This story is the longest running and longest in length on the board. That alone should tell you in how much regard it is held. It still holds me enthralled.Your ability to juggle numerous different story lines and to have such diverse characters, to take those characters along paths that we had never even thought of, that ability is profound.

As always, when reading a post - I want more!

I second that. I'm always disappointed if we don't get a new episode every day.

#1019:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Fri Apr 09, 2004 3:23 pm

Thank you for the votes of confidence, I know there are many people on the board with more deeply held views than me, and I'm not sure if it's my place to be tackling the subject.

“It seems to be taking a long time to find those towels.” Andrew decided to break the uncomfortable silence.
“What? Oh, well, I daresay they’ve plenty to say to one another.” Jack too, had been lost in his own thoughts, reflecting on just how much had been kept from Joey throughout their years together, and yet, due to her health, and her ‘highly strung nature’ people had been keeping secrets from her all her life, Dick, Jem, even Madge to a certain extent, even her own children had taken up the habit. “So, how are the wedding plans coming along?” he made an effort to change the subject.
“Con is the one to ask about that, I just do as I’m told,” Andrew said with a grimace, “You know what women are like when it comes to things like weddings.”
“I suspect that I’m about to find out,” Jack thought of the bills which were liable to be filling the post sack in the near future.
“I thought you might remember from your own wedding.”
“Oh, I did what I was told all right, but that was during the war, a rather different kettle of fish. It was a case of making do with what you had. I’m glad it won’t be like that for Con, or the other girls when their turn comes, although by the time young Hild gets around to marrying it will probably be a case of eating the rice for the wedding breakfast rather than throwing it.”
“Well, that won’t be for a good few years yet, and she may even decide to be a career woman rather than going for the husband and babies.”
“Who can say? As you said, she’s still a baby herself.”
Andrew looked at his watch, wondering when he could decently excuse himself and venture upstairs to his bride to be. He was surprised to see how early the hour was.

Ellie, I do hate it whan you write ' It's not my place'. Your opinions are as valid as anyone else's, and this drabble shows that you are a good writer - I woudn't keep asking for more if I didn't think so.

I just wish I had thought of it!

ETA: It's easy enough to write a comic drabble, but a far different thing to write something as complex and extended as this. Go for it!

Thank you for the flowers, Ellie. The problem is that I find it easy, but a serious drabble/novel - well, my characters just tie me up in knots, and I never end up writing according to my plot.

#1024:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Fri Apr 09, 2004 5:11 pm

And why do you think this has gone on so long Jennie? Wink

“I agree, it’s hard to see any reason,” Hilda said softly, “For those of us left behind, especially. But He will come through for us, if only we trust him.”
Emile shook her head, “How can you keep trusting when that trust has been betrayed? I have given up so much for this way of life, only to find I’ve been deceived.”
“The lord will never deceive you my dear. Remember this and you will soon regain your trust.” Hilda was finding this one of the most difficult conversations of her life, she had had cause to talk upon the matter at other times, in the past, but that mostly, had been a case of gently helping others to reaffirm their belief in times of trial. Never before had she faced a situation where someone had appeared to repudiate their former beliefs in such a wholesale manner.
“We all make sacrifices in our lives,” She continued, “Sometimes in small ways, sometimes, as in your case, we sacrifice much more, but none compare to the sacrifice the Lord made for us, when he gave up his Son for us. Your sacrifice has not been in vain, you gave me a reason to keep living. Please don’t allow His sacrifice to be in vain for you. With his help, you have achieved a great deal of good in the world, and whether you decide to return to your order or not, you can continue to do, but you will find it easier if you have His strength to help you.”
Emile opened her mouth to speak, but Hilda forestalled her, “No, I don’t expect you to agree with me, not yet anyway, but promise me you will think over our conversation rather than dismiss it immediately. That’s all I ask for, will you promise?”
“Given your kindness, I can hardly do anything other, but I doubt that I will change my mind. However, I will consider your words.”
“And as I said, I can ask for no more. If you decide not to return, then I will do all I can to help you find employment. As you heard, there is a large Sanatorium at the far end of the Platz, I’m sure that they will be grateful for your expertise. Nurse Green, who tended to you is actually part of the San, she was seconded to us after we fell victim to, er, unforeseen circumstances, but I think you will have seen enough to realise that both establishments pay the greatest attention to the welfare of their patients.”
“I certainly have no cause to complain about the care I received, to be honest, I thought I was in a hospital when I first awoke. I never dreamt that I was in the school, especially since it’s so quite. Your girls must be extraordinarily well behaved.”
“On the whole, they are,” Hilda smiled, “But they’re not fully fledged angels yet, nor would anyone expect them to be. It wouldn’t be this quiet if it were not half term.” She refilled both their cups with coffee, and the talk turned to more general matters, but Emile Rouen found that her thoughts kept returning to the earlier part of their conversation.

The Nun remained with the injured young man until the ambulance arrived. “What did he say to you?” her companion asked, as the vehicle finaly sped away from the scene of the accident, “You looked puzzled.”
“He said, ‘Robin’”
“What an unusual thing to say, unless it is the name of someone close to him. It may be the case.”
“Maybe, but I was known by that name when I was a child, right up until the moment I entered la Sagasse, in fact, but I am sure that he is not someone I know, although he would have been little more than a child at that time. Ah well, since I am returning to Canada now, it is unlikely I will find out more. But perhaps you would visit him in the hospital to ensure that he is well, it seems as though he has fallen upon hard times.”
“But of course, now though, we must hurry, these aeroplanes, they do not wait as the omnibus used to in the old days. It is a pity that your visit had to be so short, and for such a sad occasion.”
“Sad for us, but the Mother Superior is at peace now, freed from all her pain. You could not wish her back among us to suffer once again.”
The two continued to make their way through the city streets, towards the coach which would decant Souer Marie Cecile at the airport.

Emile Rouen remained at the school for the next few days, and when it was discovered that the entire third year had contrived to catch a particularly nasty cold virus during their excursion her presence was greatly appreciated, not least bt Nurse Green who would otherwise have been, in her own words, “Running around in circles until I met myself.”

Jem decided that Joey would be fit enough to travel back to England with him, accordingly she, Hilda and Anna accompanied him to the airport, with Joey declaring that there was no question of leaving behind either her baby or her maid, since it would be unfair to expect Madge’s Rosa to suddenly take on another, unexpected, small child.
Privately Jack believed that the Russell’s had more than enough staff to cope with any eventuality, but he kept his thoughts to himself, reluctant to spark off another argument.

Andrew also flew back to England later that same day, his departure being the cause of more than a few tears from Con. That young lady had continued to brood over Matey’s actions, and she did not disdain to keep her anger at simmering point. She began to look for other targets too, and began to blame Miss Annersley for failing to notice what was happening. “She would have noticed all right if it had been Len,” she thought to herself, and this did nothing for her general well being. In the end though, she vented her anger on the person she felt most secure in treating to a display of temper and accused her father of neglecting her, for failing to notice what was wrong, what had been happening to her.
Jack endured the tirade patiently and made no real attempt to defend himself, but when it was over he dried her tears and comforted her as though she had no older than Hilda.
He had returned to his work at the San, although he attempted to ration his hours so as not to leave Con alone too much, until Con herself made the decision to fulfil her promise to Miss Annersley and continue teaching until the end of the term.
Jem returned to Switzerland on the Friday of that week, bringing with him a junior science mistress from Carnbach. Being already instilled with the Chalet School ethos, this young lady was quickly assimilated into the staff, and by the end of the first week, it was as if she had belonged to the School for ever.

Jem and Hilda were also involved in the rather more difficult task of placating Jenny’s parents. They were, eventually, dissuaded from taking legal action against the school, by being offered a very substantial settlement, but they held firm to their stance that Jenny was to leave with immediate effect, despite Jem’s offer of free schooling for the rest of the child’s career. It was only when they saw their daughter happily ensconced among her erstwhile form mates that they began to waver slightly, but they left Switzerland, with their daughter, without committing themselves to a final decision.

Jenny herself had made a point of publicly thanking Cora for drawing Dr Maynard’s attention to her plight, making it clear that she in no way blamed Cora for her illness. “It was my own silly fault for not going to Matey myself,” She pointed out, “And for telling the rest of you not to say anything either.” This reiteration of Hilary’s words on the subject, coupled with the warm friendliness shown by Jenny to the other girl made more than one member of the class feel distinctly uncomfortable, and led Flaurette to feel grateful that she, at any rate, had been moved to show some small acts of friendliness towards Hilary since they school returned from their half term break.
It was Stella’s turn to feel the disapproval of the form, especially when she tried to justify herself by pointing out that Hilary had tried to wriggle out of taking any blame for the incident with the bathroom and the fight with Louise, regardless of her own part in that particular set of circumstances.
Most of the form, however, thought that Hilary had been punished enough, both by themselves and the authorities, and even Louise was not inclined to support Stella, after her talk with the head. It could have led to the form once again uniting against a single girl had it not been for Hilary’s insistence on including Stella in her and Flaurette’s activities, and treating her former enemy as though nothing had happened. Outwardly, therefore, the form appeared to settle down again, but inwardly Stella could not help but continue to feel a burning resentment against the other girl, in spite of, her perhaps because, the fact that deep down, she knew herself to be in the wrong.

Joey’s visit to Madge extended from a couple of weeks into a couple of months, and during that time, if Freudesheim was nt exactly a ‘Happy Home’, it was a peaceful one, for perhaps the first time since the Maynards took up residence. It was not until the Christmas holiday that the family were re-united.

Oooh a lovley long post thank you Ellie!!!

Its great seeing it all come together Ellie. Lots of mysteries still to tie up though (as if you needed reminding!) .... Reg in Paris, Joey and Jack...

oh and didn't Jack mention something to Jem about his suspicions about Joey? Or did he decided that that wasn't wise?

Jennie, Im here, but someone very nicely and politely asked me to write Fay's story about a week ago, so I've been doing that, sorry.
But since I've written over 5000 words all together today, it's time my fingers had a rest.
More tomorrow, I promise.

*Crosses fingers*

But Nicci, as my uncle used to say 'tomorrow never comes'

Some say "to-morrow" never comes, A saying oft thought right; But if to-morrow never came, No end were of "to-night." The fact is this, time flies so fast, That e'er we've time to say "To-morrow's come," presto! behold! "To-morrow" proves "To-day."

Um, yes. Ok.

An interlude, Roger's visit had other consequences which none of the main protagonists were aware of

A letter from Fay.

“Well, Daphne, as you’ll see by the postmark, I’m home, and jolly glad to be so too. ‘Oh’, I hear you saying, ‘The introduction to Roger’s guardians did not go at all well.’
And you would be so right. Except it was worse, far, far worse, than anything you could imagine, and the result of it all is that Roger and I are no longer to be married.
No, don’t start getting upset, for I’m not, not now anyway, since I’ve had time to think, but I was upset to begin with, and that led me to behave rather badly, I think. Now sit back and let me tell you all about it.
First though, it seems to me as though ever since we were born, it has been our destiny, our purpose in life, to do no more than run the household and supply our husbands with heirs, and let’s be honest, we have gone along with that vision of the future.
Remember how we used to feel sorry for Miss Edmund because se was a dried up old spinster who couldn’t find a man? Although she did rather bring it upon herself, for she never encouraged us to think differently, not by example anyway. I mean, what did we actually learn at school? We learnt to cook, of course (How to impress your husband’s boss), We learnt to sew, though I’m rather grateful that skill - some of the latest fashions are so expensive, even Daddy turned pale last time we went to town! Oh, and I suppose we learnt other things, a little French conversation, how to appreciate art, how to discuss great literature, although not how to read it, and I don’t mean how to recognise the words! I mean read as in fully understand and think about the story. But what did we learn that would be any use to us? If we wanted to make a career for instance. The answer is not very much. In fact I would go as far as to say that we were positively discouraged from learning, too much of it would put off any prospective husband. I certainly felt that when I was with Roger. I’m sure he would have run a mile if I hadn’t believed I was as sweet and innocent and dumb as I pretended, and perhaps, considering what’s happened, that would have been for the best.
You now I was excited about visiting Switzerland again, I really enjoyed those three weeks we had skiing, but believe me, Switzerland in the early autumn is not the same place as Switzerland during the season. Especially that particular corner of Switzerland, which is at least ten years, and probably twenty, behind the times. In some ways at least.
I wanted to make a good impression, so I chose to wear that dress that I had run up by that marvellous little dressmaker in Horton Street, you know the one I mean? The green one, how would you describe it? Soft green is closest I can get to it, with the russet flower print, in a princess style. You must know the one I mean, anyway, I teamed it up with medium high heels, and I must say, I thought I looked very nice. Roger said so too, when I asked him, though I doubt if he would have noticed what I was wearing unless it was something totally outrageous. Do you ever feel as though you become invisible when you’re with Stephen?
Anyway, needless to say, it did not make much of an impression. My hostess, Roger’s, what do you call her? She isn’t his mother, not even an adopted mother I think, I shall settle for calling her Mrs Maynard, you’ll know who I mean. (Incidentally, you may have heard of her, she writes children’s books under her maiden name Josephine Bettany - go and check your sister’s bookshelves, I think they’re aimed at people of Lucinda’s age, then you’ll see which type of girl she prefers.) Anyway Mrs Maynard was not impressed by my appearance, although I suppose it would be too much to expect from a woman wearing sensible brogues, a tweed skirt and a respectable, though vivid, twinset. It was one she knitted herself, I think, and it wasn’t frightfully well done either, and it was beginning to go saggy with age, you know how wool gets after a while. She wasn’t wearing a scrap of make up, of course, although admittedly it would have taken a lot of make up to make her look pretty, and as for her hair! Oh Daphne, I’m sure we would have collapsed with hysterics if you had been there, I found it difficult to keep a straight face as it was. It’s long, about waist length I would imagine, and plaited into two pigtails.
‘Two pigtails?’ I hear you ask, ‘in a woman of her age?’ to which I can only yes, but that wasn’t the end of it. Not only did she have the pigtails, she had them wound up on the side of her head, each side I mean, so that they totally covered her ears. I had to wonder if it was because se has ears that stick out like Prince Charles. Not that I said so out loud of course. I wouldn’t have dared!
But never mind her appearance, it was her attitude that bothered me. As I said, I did not make a good first impression, in fact she made her disapproval very clear, though not in words of course. She was very polite, very, very polite, but I could tell that she didn’t think I was worthy of her attention, and I was certainly far from her notion of a suitable wife for precious Roger.
And I do say ‘precious’ with good reason, she may not be his mother in any form or capacity, but there was definitely something between them, something other than the normal mother - son relationship I mean.
When she was speaking to him her smile reached her eyes, and she appeared to be a good ten years younger, if that makes sense. And he was just as bad, as ridiculous as it sounds, I’m sure they were flirting with one another. And, yes, I do know how ridiculous that actually does sound, but if you think about it, he was what, sixteen or seventeen when he first set eyes on her, and he was already quite grown up by then, in one way, looking after the rest of his family whilst their father was off on one of his ‘mad scientist’ phases. In fact, from what I can gather that was more often than not, so you can see that he wouldn’t have really seen her as a mother figure, but even so! How many years older than him is she? She ought to be ashamed of herself carrying on like that.
Anyway, you can see the situation I found myself in. It would be enough to make Timmy become nervous and tongue tied, and you know how much confidence he’s got. Except, of course, when I’m nervous I don’t become tongue tied at all, as you well know, I begin to chatter on about anything and nothing.
I dare say that if I had been able to talk about art, or the latest novels, I might have got a different reception, but I was sure that she knew far more about such things than I, and frankly, I was afraid of looking a total fool, so I picked on something that I do know something about, clothes and fashions and hair styles. Now, I know that these topics can keep us absorbed for hours, but it wasn’t long before her eyes began to glaze over, which only made me even more nervous of course, but eventually she got up and said that she would prepare my room for me. (That was another point against me - that my appearance was totally unexpected. Roger said that he told her to expect me, but that she evidently hadn’t read his letter properly, and I do believe him actually, I mean even someone who acts on impulse as much as Roger does wouldn’t turn up with an unexpected guest in tow.)
I was quite relieved that she was going, I thought it would give me and Rog some time together, alone, so that we could discuss matters, but no, she had other ideas! The next thing I knew she had asked him to go with her to help carry the bedclothes!
They were gone for absolutely ages, though part of that might have been because of where she put me, which was about as far from the rest of the household as it was possible to get, without expecting me to sleep on the roof, or in the garden! I mean, talk about pointed, it’s an absolutely huge house, it used to be a hotel in fact, with loads of bedrooms, and she expected me to sleep in what would have been the servants quarters. But even so, it’s hardly a stately home, and it wouldn’t take that long to get from one room to another, so I can only imagine that they were having a good talk about me. And how unsuitable I was!
Well, I’ll admit, I had a bit of a nosy around the drawing room, the ‘salon’ she calls it, but there wasn’t anything that interesting in there, just a few photos really, mainly of her children (she seems to have millions) and the rest of her family, so all in all, it didn’t keep me interested very long, so I settled down with the copy of Harpers that I took to read on the plane. I don’t know how long I was waiting, but the next thing was that another girl suddenly came in. Con, her name is, as I found out later, and she’s one of Mrs Maynard’s daughters. She’s about the same age as us, and she’s teaching at the school. (Did I mention that there’s a school at the bottom of the garden? An English school too, I think Mrs Maynard may have something to do with it, though I’m not sure about that. She went there as a pupil though, that much I do know! In fact I know rather more than I ever wanted to about that!)
She, Con I mean, isn’t going to be a full time teacher though, she’s getting married next year, to a doctor, which I’m sure does meet with the families approval since the father is a doctor himself.
She is a much more attractive creature than her mother, she’s a fellow redhead, though not the same shade as me, she’s almost black actually, with just a touch of red in it, and she’s got really dark eyes, she gets those from her mother, she’s taller than me, but isn’t everyone?, and bigger built, but all in proportion. If it her that Roger was flirting with I would have understood it rather better, but there didn’t seem to be any attraction between them at all, not on his side anyway, he just treated her like he does his sister, which I suppose she is in a way, although there’s no more blood relationship between them than there is between him and Mrs Maynard. Mind you, after the way she introduced herself, I can’t say I blame him.
As I said, I was sitting there reading my magazine when she came in. “I said hello to her, as you do, and I was ever so polite, I even showed her the magazine I was looking at.
Anyway, she asked me my name, although I thought Roger had told them that in the letter, so I told her, and the next thing I know she’s walking away from me backwards, as though Fays are infectious or something. No doubt you think she was being very rude, ad I did too, though to be honest, I found it a bit scary too. Anyway the next thing I know there’s all sorts of a commotion going on in the hallway, and that’s what convinced me she was scary. I heard all this yelling, so I opened the door a crack and took a peek at what was going on, and there she was, Con, holding on to a bookend and looking as though she meant to do serious damage to someone, while Rog was holding her from behind trying to stop her, while Mrs Maynard was asking her what she thought she was doing. And then, guess what? She said she had been frightened by me, and that she thought there was more of me, or my accomplices rather, upstairs kidnapping Gwynnie (that’s the youngest child, she’s not much more than a baby really - I’m surprised that her husband still finds her attractive enough to want to, well, you know what I mean. He’s not too bad himself actually, for an older man, but I think he’s probably one of those men who actually improve with age) Anyway, I then heard Rog, who needless to say was finding the whole situation uproariously funny, saying something about meeting me, so I scooted back to my chair and sat there as if I hadn’t moved the whole time, but believe me, I was wondering what on earth I had got myself into.
After that little scene Mrs Maynard took Con into her study, so me and Rog did get chance to talk to one another, at least we would have if he hadn’t decided he needed to go and freshen up. Admittedly, he did look a bit untidy, but he wasn’t covered in dust and grime or anything, and by the time he came back, so had they. I would have almost thought that it was me that had upset him by going around threatening to clobber people with bookends, because he didn’t have a lot to say, not to me anyway. A lot of the time they were talking about things that had happened before, or about people and places they knew, which I didn’t think was very polite, but even when they started talking about our wedding plans, he spoke to them rather than me. And then Con was talking about university, she went to Oxford, so she must be cleverer than we were, can you imagine any of us ever going to any university at all? Or perhaps they get a proper education at this school here, it’s a huge place so it must be quite popular.
Anyway, the rest of the night was much the same, they don’t have a television, so it was just talk, or read, or play some word games that I for one couldn’t make head or tail of, though I’m pleased to say that Roger wasn’t that much better, not as quick as the others anyway, but eventually, and thankfully, although I never thought I would hear myself say as much, it was time for bed. Well, when I say time for bed, it was about a quarter to ten (Or 21.45 as they say here) Can you imagine it? Me in bed before ten o’clock, and not only in bed, but jolly glad to be there too. I have never been so bored in my life. As I said, it might have been better if I had been able to join in with their conversation, but as I mentioned earlier, I hardly dare open my mouth when they talked about books or art or politics and none of them seemed particularly interested in fashions, well, you wouldn’t expect it from Roger of course, but I did think the other two might have more than the passing interest that Con showed.
Whew, my hands starting to ache, I don’t think I’ve ever written so long a letter in my life, but it isn’t finished yet, not by a long way.
The next day wasn’t too bad, actually. Roger took me out for a drive in the car that he had hired in the morning, and we stayed out for lunch too, which was really nice, do you remember those crispy little potatoes we had? The ones that were all soft on the inside? Well, we had those, and some veal, which was lovely and tender, which animal does veal come from by the way? Pork is from pigs, beef is from cows, mutton is from sheep, what animals does that leave? Horses? Goats? I hope it isn’t the latter! Did we ever cook with veal at Eddies? I don’t remember doing so.
I suppose, looking back now, that he was a bit quiet during the whole day, but it might just be me thinking that because of what happened later, or it might have been because of his headache.
After we got back, I went to Interlaken with Con for a few hours, looking around the shops. I have to say, they were noting special, certainly not the variety of the shops in London, but they were twice as expensive. I suppose it’s no wonder that Mrs Maynard wears such dowdy clothes, she wouldn’t have much choice unless she had them made up especially.
It was after that, when we were eating dinner, that I realised I hadn’t seen Roger for ages, he had gone to see someone, or sort some business out or something while Con and I were shopping, though what business he could have in Switzerland I have no idea. Perhaps his father left some money in one of the banks. Anyway, I asked if he had got back, and Mrs Maynard said that he had been talking to her husband in the garden, at least, she said that, but she didn’t exactly say it to me, if that makes sense. Then the doctor said that he had a headache since he’d had a lot of stuff to deal with, with our wedding, as if that were a chore, and it isn’t as if Roger has had much to do with it anyway, and this job in Africa, and Ruey going to New Zealand. He said there was no need to go to him, that he would be ok soon after. Dinner was a bit of a disaster really, I mentioned Nina Rutherford, you know, the pianist, and asked Mrs Maynard if she had heard of her. Heard of her? It only turns out that she wrote a song for one of their girls when she was born, she then started talking about other “famous” people who she knew, although I’ve put the famous in quotations because I’ve never heard of them, but I certainly felt rather snubbed.
And then the doctor had the cheek to tell me off for being selfish when I said I would have preferred Ruey not to go to New Zealand until after our wedding. I mean, what’s wrong with wanting your future sister-in-law to be there?
Still, since there isn’t going to be a wedding, I don’t suppose it matters now. I went out to see him as soon as I could of course, and I had a few words to say about the way his so called relatives were treating me, but I don’t think he was listening, and I don’t think he had a headache either, because all of a sudden he was saying he couldn’t marry me, that he would only end up hurting me too much if he did, as if he wasn’t hurting me by calling it off like that.
Oh, I meant to say, when I was telling you about the dinner, when I said something about Roger getting headaches every week, there was like a sudden silence, I didn’t think that much of it at the time, but I wonder now if they all knew something I didn’t.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ll understand that I don’t want to go into all the details here, I’ll tell you when we meet, but I don’t feel quite up to writing it all down at the moment, I’ll only start getting upset again, and I don’t want that, and to be honest, I’m not that proud of some of the things I said, but the result was that he admitted to me that he’s been seeing a married woman.
Now as I said, I really don’t want to go into details about that, but Daphne, how could he? Do you think there’s something strange about him? That he prefers older women? Maybe he likes them ugly, like Mrs Maynard? I know that I’m not a film star, and never will be, to flat chested for one thing, but I do make the best of myself, and I’m not unattractive am I? Most people don’t think so anyway.
But back to the subject, I was upset at the time, who wouldn’t be? And I hid myself away for the rest of the night, for the rest of the time I was there in fact. The last thing I wanted was their fake sympathy, since I knew very well that they would be glad that I wasn’t going to be part of their family. But I did want to get my revenge.
Oh, Daphne, I know I shouldn’t have done it, but I did, I was so fed up with them all, I wrote the doctor a letter telling him that I saw Roger and Mrs Maynard doing it on my bed!
Of course, I never saw any such thing, although I am beginning to wonder now, now that I know he likes old women, and the way they were flirting, but even if it is true, I really shouldn’t have written that letter should I? They’ll probably end up getting divorced or something, and it’ll all be my fault. As for what happened to Roger, I don’t know and I don’t care. With any luck the doctor gave him a good hard punch in the mouth. That was what I was hoping for when I wrote it anyway. He deserves that for leading me on all this time, if nothing else, though now I’ve had time to think, I’m glad that he did call the wedding off.
I mean, think about it Daphne, we would have got married and he would have gone straight off to Africa for goodness knows how long, leaving me at home on my own. I would have been bored stiff by the end of a week, never mind the months he would have been away.
And pleaser don’t suggest that I could go with him, for that would be quite out of te question, for one thing he wouldn’t have taken me, he said it’s no place for a woman, and after hearing some of the things they were saying when they were talking about politics I quite agree! Some of the tales I heard were enough to make my hair curl, or they would be if it wasn’t so firmly lacquered in place! And apart from that, it would be far to hot, you know I don’t like to go out in the sun too much in this country, I don’t want to end up looking like a potato picker with skin like leather, so the African sun would be out of the question, but what on earth would I do while he was away? Coffee mornings I suppose, and charity does, but honestly, there has to be more to life than that. And to be honest, it wouldn’t have been much better if he came from for his dinner every night, yes, I would have to cook for him, and probably his boss too, and mend his clothes, but what else? You can’t spend all day running a house can you? Even Mrs Maynard writes books, and Con means to do the same once she’s married. I’m not saying that I want to write a book, I couldn’t anyway, though you may think that this letter is beginning to resemble one! In length at least. But, Daphne, I don’t want to settle down to that sort of life yet, I’m only twenty, well nearly twenty-one, I’m going to live another forty or fifty years, there’s plenty of time for coffee mornings and the like when I’m too old to do anything else. For now, I want to do something interesting.
Don’t laugh, but I’m seriously considering enrolling for an evening class, though I don’t know exactly what class yet, and maybe even getting a job. I’ve always thought it would be quite good fun being an air hostess, and they have super uniforms, I shalll have to see if you need to be qualified a anything. You don’t think they have height restrictions do you? Like the police? I hope not anyway.
Or perhaps I could learn hairdressing, it’s something I’m interested in. I wouldn’t want to work in a salon of course, but maybe I could have a few select clients who I visited in their own homes? What do you think?
Mummy would be horrified by the whole idea of course, all she wants is for me to find an eligible husband, but I’m sure I could talk Daddy round eventually. I usually can.
I’m not saying that I want to end up left on the shelf of course, but I’m not exactly old yet am I? I’ve got at least another three or four years. And you never know, if I do end up as a air hostess I might even manage to snare a pilot! Men in uniform are so attractive!
Oh, and as for men being scared off by clever women, well it doesn’t seem to have scared off Con Maynard’s boyfriend does it? Nor Ruey’s come to that. I’m going to make an effort to learn about all these things I don’t know, well some of them anyway. I’m not dumb, and I’m fed up with pretending I am. If I’m not careful I’ll end up spending all my time with people who really are as stupid as I seem to be sometimes, not that I’m including you in that category of course.
Anyway, it’s more than time to bring this letter to an end, I’m looking forward to seeing you when you return from Scotland.

Fay. Xxxxx.

Thanks to Patmac for supplying the description of Fay - and her clothes.

And back to the story proper....

There were some notable absences from the household that Christmas, none of the Richardson’s were there, being spread across the globe, and neither, of course, was Margot.
Jack had made tentative steps towards tracing his missing daughter, placing a carefully worded advertisement in the Times and writing to Margot’s former college, but there had been no response from the first, and no useful information from the other.
Con would have had him hire a private detective, but he was loathe to go that far, torn between a wish to find his missing daughter and a respect for her own wishes.
He knew that she was well, since a card had arrived for Con on the triplets birthday, but apart from the fact that it was undisputedly written by Margot’s own hand, there were no other clues, apart from the fact that it had been posted somewhere in England.
Nevertheless, the rest of the family arrived graudually. Joey had no thought of making Christmas anything other than a happy occasion for her offspring, especially the younger members of the family, and to all appearances she was the same mother they had always known.
She and Jack were still wary, not to say awkward with one another and they both equally avoided any occasion in which they might be alone together, yet they had somehow managed to reach a tacit decision to present a united front to the rest of the family.
Joey had never fully recovered her memory of that day in Montreux, and the events which had precipitated her flight, but she had found out from Jem that Eugen Courvosier was indeed dead, killed in a fall from the cliff edge. When Joey had told him that Con had mentioned the possibility of Eugen and Jack having a fight prior to that moment, Jem had related the whole story, as far as he knew it.
Joey had taken it quietly, much to Jem’s relief, although he wished then, for the power of reading minds.
When Joey had finally spoken, it was too ask if Jack blamed himself for Eugen’s death.
“To a certain extent, yes.” Jem had told her.
Joey had nodded, “I would have been surprised if he didn’t, maybe I should have told him, but if he was that upset it probably wouldn’t have made any difference anyway.”
“Eh?” Jem’s bafflement had been evident, but Joey had refused to elucidate further, “If there was any telling to be done, then I should have done it a long time ago. It’s too late now.”
Apart from that one conversation, Joey had made no reference to the recent events, making a determinedly cheerful attempt to live only in the present, and to throw herself into any activities going until Madge was exhausted and driven to ask Jem to give Joey something to calm her down before she made herself ill.
Jem, who would have shared Madge’s concerns had he not known that Joey was putting on an act, refused to resort to such measures, but he did find the opportunity to point out to Joey that it was really not necessary, at her time of life, to revert to the wholesale schoolgirl she had once been.
Joey’s response had been a rueful grimace, and a slight moderation to her actions, even so it had been a relief to both the Russells when she had finally departed. Madge relished the feeling of peace which came over the house, whilst Jem, who had never before spent such a prolonged period of time with his sister in law since she married and produced her own family, had realised that she was rather more complex and interesting than he had previously thought, and that he was in danger of liking her rather more than he ought.

Jem should be ashamed of himself!! that's virtually cradel-snatching!!! After all Jo's 12 years younger than Madge, and how many years older than Madge is Jem? He must be nearly old enough to be Jo's father!!!

Way to go Ellie! an interlude AND an episode to carry us on since I last checked this thread - what riches!

I suppose Joey with her excitability would be such a change from 'sweet Lady Russell' that she would apeal to him - he must be having a mid life crisis Wink

Nice one Ellie.

So, Fay never really saw it? Shocked Shocked

Actually, I quite like the girl now.

And as for Jem. I hadn't reached the conclusion most people appear to have. But if that's what you were getting at... Shocked Shocked

I really really love that last post Ellie. It seemed incrediably fresh and lively, a great description of Joey's reaction. Bravo!

You have been going at it, haven't you. Fay's letter is a masterpiece! And then to add such a well drawn episode....

(tries hard not to nag, but hopes you're so in the groove you won't be able to help yourself)

Two great posts, Ellie. I loved the letter from Fay. she's a lot cleverer than anyone would have thought, I do feel sorry for her, what an upbringing - to know that you have to catch a husband to support you.

Tut, tut. You're all so eager to think the worst of poor old Jem aren't you?

Thus it was that the whole family were gathered at Fruedesheim to await the arrival of the last member to make the trip. Len had hesitated before finally committing herself to spending the holidays with her family, but since she knew that Reg Entwistle was no longer on the Platz, and she faced a somewhat lonely existence over the festive period, she had eventually made the decision to join the others.
It was only when she saw her father waiting for her in the arrivals lounge that she realised how much she had missed her family.
“Daddy,” she threw herself into his arms, “I haven’t seen you for so long.”
“Well, that’s as much your fault as mine,” he responded gruffly, “But it is good to see you again.”
“It’s good to be back again, I had forgotten how much I missed this place, and you too of course.” She gave him a quick glance as he collected her cases and began to walk towards the exit, “Daddy, what’s been happening with Reg? I know he isn’t at the San anymore?”
“No. He had a few problems and he decided to leave, in the end.” Jack replied neutrally while he searched Len’s expression for any sign of a reaction.
“Was it my fault?”
“Your fault? Why ever would you think that? It wasn’t your fault, Len, and don’t you ever think that it was.”
“But M-” Len broke off, she had no idea why her mother had decided to decamp to her sister, but she had a vague feeling that all was not well between her parents, and she decided that it might be better not to repeat the accusation flung at her by her mother, that she had ruined Reg’s career. “But, maybe I upset him when I broke off the engagement.” She said instead.
“You would have upset him more if you had married him when you really didn’t want to, Len. Besides, it isn’t what happens to you that’s important, it’s what you do about it, and Reg chose to do things in entirely the wrong way, although maybe I’m to blame for not tackling him about it before things got to the stage that they did. Now, here’s the car, I’ll just stow these cases in the boot and then we’ll be home before you know it. Con is dying to see you again.”
Len squeezed his arm gratefully as she settled in the passenger seat, she had rather been dreading the family’s reaction to the subject of Reg, and she had felt a nagging responsibility for his problems since the day she had travelled to her Aunt Madge’s to greet her mother.
Con was hovering by the door awaiting their arrival and as soon as she saw the car headlights she rushed out of the house to greet her triplet, almost forcibly yanking Len out of the car.
“Hey, steady on, or you’ll both end up on the floor,” Jack protested, “And a nice pair you’ll look then, all covered in bruises and grazes. What are you doing out here without a coat on anyway Con? Go on, get inside, I’ll bring the luggage.”
Con giggled and hauled her sister inside the house, where as expected, she was the centre of attention as her brothers and sisters clustered around her. In the general melee, Len was the only one to notice that her mother had not joined the welcoming party.

Wow Ellie you have had a real writing fest haven't you.

Fay's letter made her appear so human and nice, not at all my original impression, like someone else said, I quite like her now.

Then the rest....fresh, lively and interesting. Way to go Ellie.

With everyone home for Christmas there's scope for a lot more 'Tensions'. Twisted Evil

Is there any significance in the fact that Joey isn't among the welcoming party? Other than her general confusion and lack of social skills?

I would have written this last night, had it not been for a certain Lesley Ann Green and her unrepentant co-hort! But how can you write after that?

Thanks for all the comments, but really the credit for Fay's letter should go to Patmac, I didn't really know Fay at all, in fact I worried that she might have, originally, been a bit of a caracicture, but then again, she was only there to give Joey a reason for going into the bedrom with Roger! It was Patmac who described her to me, and breathed life into her.

After the rest of the family gradually dispersed upon their lawful occasions, Len settled down in the salon for a much needed cup of coffee, brought to her by a beaming Anna who was delighted at the return of her favourite triplet. Len had warmly returned the maid’s greeting, and she had returned to the kitchen area, happy that all was well with her world.
It was whilst Len was describing her journey to Con and her father that Joey finally made an appearance.
With just the slightest of hesitation, unnoticed by anyone save herself, Len jumped to her feet and hugged her mother. “Mamma, it’s lovely to see you again.”
Joey returned her hug rather absently, “I’m always pleased to see you, my lamb, though I do wonder at you travelling all this way when it was too difficult for you to come to the Round House to see me. Mary Lou managed to come from London.”
“I am sorry Mamma, I just couldn’t, there was always something on when you invited me. You have no idea how much work us post graduates have to do.” She said with a smile, “But I’m here now.” What she had omitted to say, was that after that first visit to her mother, not long after Joey’s arrival in England, when Joey had turned on her and accused her of ruining Reg’s life by calling off her engagement for “All this education nonsense, you could teach at the Chalet School without all this,” Len had made sure that her diary was very full indeed. Scarcely an evening went by when she wasn’t attending a concert, or a debate, or a talk, whether it was relevant to her course or not. “And I have to say,” she continued, with a slight change of subject, “That I’m jolly glad that I learned how to work at school, because I would be struggling now if I hadn’t. But never mind me, what about you? It looks as though Auntie Madge has been feeding you well.”
“I hope you’re not implying that I’m getting fat.” Joey replied, infusing her tones with mock indignation, “But I must run along now and organise tea, and I do mean tea for once, proper English tea, not Kaffee and Kuchen.” She suited her actions to her words and disappeared in short order, but not before Jack, alerted by Len’s words had had time to take a god look at his wife. As Len had said, there was a definite thickening of her waistline.

Uh, ho! References to 'busy' come springing to mind! Is this another twist to the story?

Looking forward to more when you can.

By the way, I can't really take any credit for Fay - I just saw her so clearly in my mind when I read the drabble and described what my mind saw. It's odd when that happens with a minor character, isn't it?

*Thinks that Jennie has no need to worry just yet*

If Joey was worried that her family might begin to speculate on her weight gain, she was wrong. Len and Con had too much catching up to do, too many things to tell one another, to even think about the subject.
Jack had a few thoughts of his own, but shortly after something happened to turn all their attention firmly away from Joey.
Stephen, Charles and Mike were outside chopping wood for the large open fire in the salon, busy talking about their own concerns; Stephen had just completed his first term at the vetinary college in Edinburgh, and he had a great deal to tell his brothers about student life. To his relief his parents had accepted his decision not to study medicine with equanimity and he was able to throw himself fully into student life without feeling the slightest bit guilty at letting them down. Like Margot, he was ready to have a good time, but unlike his sister he knew where to draw the line and when to concentrate on work and he had more than held his own among his peer group.
Charles, meanwhile, had surprised everyone by displaying an exceptional talent as an opening batsman. Not only a permanent fixture in the first eleven, he had been one of the youngest boys to have ever been awarded the captaincy in his school, and consequently he too had his tales to tell.
Mike, who already knew all about it, was less enthralled than Steven. He was proud of his brothers achievements, but that pride was tinged with a little envy. He would have given a great deal to be able to emulate his older sibling, but found himself frustrated by his lack of ability. In fact, he had been feeling generally disgruntled with the world since Joey had greeted him with her habitual mention of Dartford, and listening to Steve’s stories had increased his discontent, even though he had laughed as much as anyone at some of the more outrageous events described by his brother.
“For goodness sake give it a rest, Chas, it’s old news now anyway.” he snapped, as Charles repeated the comments made by his house master about the likelihood of him gaining a cricket ‘blue’.
“You pipe down, it’s new to me.” Steve rushed to the defence of his brother.
“You can shut up as well. It’s all right for both of you isn’t it? You’re either at university, or headed there, no-one telling you what you have to do with your life. Mum and Dad didn’t bat an eyelid when you said you wanted to be a vet, and no-one says anything to Chas about his future career, although as far as anyone knows he hasn’t even chosen one yet, but me, just because I was interested in the workings of a boat when I was a kid, I’m supposed to join the bloody navy.”
“Come off it Mike, no-one is going to force you to join the navy if you really don’t want to. Dad won’t let it happen anyway, no matter what Mum says, but you’ve still got to finish your schooling yet, there’s no point in getting worked up about it at this stage.” Because Charles had been half turned away, talking to Mike, he raised the axe and chopped downwards without paying attention to where the blade would land.

Sorry!

Joey was first into the garden, she had been in the kitchen discussing the plans for Christmas dinner with Anna when she heard Charles’ high pitched yowl of pain, and the horrified exclamations of the other two.
She rushed out of the door, prepared for anything, and it was to her utter relief that that were no severed hands or fingers in sight, but there was a definite trickle of blood dribbling from under the hand Charles held to his face, and his low moans told her he was in pain.
“It’s allright Charley, I’m here, come on, let me see,” She flew to her second son and forcibly removed his hand to look at his injury. What she saw made her pale, but she retained her composure and took charge of the situation, “Mike, go and find your father, tell him he needs to get Charles to the San, straightaway. No, never mind what happened, just go. Steve, go and get the car out and ready to go.”
Thankful that, for once, Jack was on hand when he was needed, she turned her attention back to Charles. “Ok, let’s get you to the car, your father will be ready to go by the time we get there, you’ll be at the San before you know it, and they’ll soon get you sorted out.” She took him by the arm and led him towards the front of the house, Charles was quiet now, but Joey was not fooled into thinking that that meant he was feeling better, the signs of pain were clearly marked on that part of his face not covered by his hand, as was the underlying expression of fear.

Jack, closely followed by Mike, came out of the front door as Joey and Charles came along the pathway to the garden. Steve had the car running, and was seated behind the steering wheel, “I’ll drive,” he awnsered Jack’s querying look, “Then you can go straight in and get sorted out.”
Jack nodded, then taking a quick look at Charles, he pulled open the door and practically pushed Joey and Charles onto the back seat, slamming the door behind them.
Joey, looking out the window, caught sight of Mike’s strained features, and opened the door again, telling him to jump in quickly.
In her own mind, she suspected that Mike had something to do with the accident which had befallen Charles, but if that was the case, he was already suffering enough to all appearances, there was no need for her to make things worse by leaving him at home to brood over what had happened.

Felicity, walking down the stairs after practising her ballet steps with the aid of the towel rail in the bathroom, stopped to watch from one of the windows. After the car had disappeared from the driveway at a speed that would, under normal circumstances, have brought forth an outcry from the two adults, she continued down the stairs with more haste than care, as she sought out someone to give her an explanation.
At first she thought the salon was unoccupied, until she noticed Phil curled up in one of the big armchairs, thoughtfully sucking a pencil.
“Phil?”
Gaining no response she kicked her gently to gain her attention, “Phil, where have Mamma and Pappa gone with the boys?”
“What? If you’re going to kick me, Fliss, do it properly.” Phil had been a fragile child, prone to illness, which had culminated in polio while she was little more than a baby. Although she had now fully recovered, the rest of the family were still inclined to treat her with exaggerated care, much to Phil’s resentment.
“If you keep calling me Fliss I will kick you. But where have they gone?”
“Oh, the San probably, I think Charles might have chopped his hand off or something.”
“What?” Len and Con had entered the room in time to catch the end of the conversation, and the shriek came from Len, “What do you mean Charles has cut his hand off?”
Phil reluctantly looked up again, “I dunno, perhaps he hasn’t. Mike came dashing in and said he’d had an accident. I wasn’t really listening, I’m trying to work out how to get the princess off the train.”
“You brat, giving us a fright like that.” Len admonished her, “In future you want to start taking notice of what’s going on around you, and stop coming up with such gruesome fantasies.”
“That kid is far worse than I ever was.” Con stated emphatically, “But if Mike and Steve have gone too it can’t be anything too drastic.”
“Steve was driving.” Felicity told them.
“That settles it then, it can’t be anything too bad if they’re trusting Steve to drive them.” Len said firmly, “Anyway, since Mamma isn’t here, we’d better set too and tidy up in here, and start setting the tea table.”

#1120:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Tue Apr 20, 2004 7:53 pm

Tea time came and went with no news from the rest of the family, after twenty minutes Len decided there was little point in them waiting any longer for their own meal.
She kept up a determinedly cheerful conversation as they sat around the table, ably backed up by Con, and when Phil began to speculate aloud about the possibility of the robber falling from the train and getting his hand chopped off by the wheels she was quickly suppressed, but anyone who cared to look would have seen both Len and Con make frequent anxious glances in the direction of the telephone, as did Felicity.
The family remained sitting in the dining room long after they had finished eating. The conversation had gradually grown more desultory, before dying out altogether; the forced cheeriness began to sound too false, and no-one wanted to talk about the subject which was uppermost in their minds.
At some point Len decided it would be as well to clear away the used plates, after which she set about washing them with a great deal of vigour and no little mess.
When she had finished her task she found the rest of her family still sitting around the table. Erica was talking quietly to Claire, and Phil was still seemingly absorbed in her story, although Len doubted that anyone could cut themselves off from reality so thoroughly unless they chose to do so deliberately.
The sense of responsibility which had been so well developed, and encouraged, throughout her childhood and adolescence was making itself felt once again, yet, she had been away from her family for so long, and they had developed so much in her absence that she was no longer sure how to proceed. For the first time since she had returned to England after breaking off her engagement, she began to wish that Reg was standing beside her.

I promised more, so I've written more, but it is only a very smal bit, sorry but ZZZZ

She brushed the thought aside impatiently, she was still a little hazy about the details of Reg’s departure from the San, but she gathered, mainly from her mother’s comments, that her former fiance had been sacked for being drunk on duty, though quite how that was supposed to be her fault wasn’t entirely clear, but in her mind the incident proved that she had made the right decision, hadn’t she?
The sound of the car drawing into the drive immediately banished all thoughts of Reg from her mind, for the time at least. Her first instinct, to rush to the door and fling it open was quelled by a sudden nervousness, and she knew, without even looking, that Con felt the same.
It seemed there fears were justified when the door opened to admit only Steve and Mike.

There was a momentary silence before Steve wilted before the blast of questions aimed at him. He leaned against the wall for support and waited for everyone to stop speaking. He had driven home slowly, trying to delay the moment as long as possible, now that he could no longer avoid the responsibility, he was finding it every bit as difficult as he had dreaded.
Aware that everyone was looking at him, waiting for him speak, he took a deep breath and related the events of the day.
It was a simple enough story, somehow a piece of metal had been embedded in the wood that Charles had been chopping. He, amused at his younger brother’s indignation, had failed to notice and had brought the axe down in that exact spot. It may not have mattered, if he had not been using one of the cast of tools that he had dug out from the back of the shed, but the axe had long seen better days, and the blade had fractured upon meeting the unexpected obstruction. The largest fragment had hit his face, just below the eye, but a smaller piece of metal had gone into the eye itself.
“He had to have stitches, in his face, he’ll always have a scar, but that’s nothing.” Steve continued, “It’s his eye that there worried about, he’s been taken to the specialist hospital, mum and dad have gone with him. They, the doctors, are worried that he might lose the sight in that eye.”
The news was greeted with murmurings of horrified sympathy for their missing brother, during which Felicity was heard to firmly and decisively say that they must all pray for him as hard as they could, and Con took the time to think of Steve and bade him to sit down whilst she fetched him some coffee, despite his remarks that he could do with something a little stronger. Phil and Len remained quiet, Phil was scribbling gin her note book as hard as she could, whilst Len, Len had been staring at Mike’s pale and drawn appearance.
Suddenly, she took two steps towards him and began shaking him, “It’s you isn’t it? This is your fault, I can tell by the way you look, you’re always doing things and this time poor Charles has had to pay for it, it’s about time you grew up and stopped being such an obnoxious brat. You’re not a child anymore, you’re just a horrible spiteful hooligan.”
“Len, stop it. Leave Mike alone, this is nothing to do with him, I know, I was there.” Steve jumped from his chair again and forcibly pulled Len away, “Do you hear me? It was nothing to do with Mike, now leave him be, it’s as bad for him as it is for the rest of us. Now you calm down and apologise.”
“It’s his own fault if I think that, it usually is him.” Len was still unwilling to absolve Mike totally, but had she wanted to deliver an apology at that moment it would not have been possible, as soon as Steve had released her grip on Mike’s shoulder’s he had turned and fled the room.

It is utterly fabulous - I have been emotionally involved with it since page 1 of the archived bits right through to your last post. I cannot imagine how you manage to keep track of everyone & all the things that are happening. Thanks so much and I only have one more thing to say:

I'm very flattered that you thought it was worth spending 25 hours (!) on this story Dawn, but I'm sorry if it didn't turn out to be the light relief you hoped for. (I really do think we ought to get Bailey's to sponsor this board)

Mike made his way, not to his room, where he could easily be disturbed, but to the very top of the house in the little used attic area. As a young boy he had spent many an hour up there, with a powerful torch, taking apart old clocks or radios and trying to get them to work again, albeit with limited success. For the moment though, he had no need of light, and he groped his way across the room to the old discarded sofa with horsehair escaping from the leather, where, heedless of the possibility of spiders or other creepy crawlies, he flung himself down across the full length of the seat.
Len’s words had hurt more than she had realised; Mike lay in the darkness and wondered if that was really how his family thought of him, if the escapades which to him had been little more than harmless fun really were the actions of an obnoxious brat, a horrible spiteful hooligan.
His mother had thought that it may have been him who was responsible for Charles injury too, she hadn’t said anything, but he had more than enough experience to read the expression on her face. The fact that she had hastened to reassure him that he had no need to blame himself, once she knew the full story, didn’t quite make up for the initial suspicion.
Nor did it prevent him from believing that, in a way, it was all his fault. Not for distracting Charles’ attention, they had all told him that, his mother, his father, Steve, enough Charles himself had muttered something to that effect, and he was sensible enough to take their comments on board, but deep down, he knew that his words to Charles had come not so much from dissatisfaction with the proposed career his mother had mapped out for him, but from a mixture of envy, jealousy and resentment towards his older brother. “I didn’t want him to have what I couldn’t have for myself, and now he most likely won’t be able too. It was spite, and if I hadn’t thought like that maybe it would never have happened, if I hadn’t wished for it. But I didn’t want anything like this to happen, if it had to, it should have happened to me, not him. It’s not fair.” Mike having the normal teenage boy’s disdain for tears, wiped his hand, grimy from the dust in the attic, across his eyes as he struggled to come to terms with his feelings of guilt.

(And I'm sorry I keep making everyone miserable, I don't mean to - it just happens)

Len left the others soon after Mike. She knew that she had shocked her brothers and sisters with her outburst, although none of them had said anything. In fact, no one had said much to her at all, something which she felt keenly.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. She was the one that everyone else looked up to, or turned to in times of trouble. Except it didn’t seem to work like that anymore. After the excitement of the initial greeting her younger sisters and brothers had turned to Con, or occasionally Steve, whoever they needed advice, or just a word of encouragement.
It was no surprise to find Steve dealing with the boys problems of course, as the eldest son he had always been accustomed to doing so, but Con, the dreamer, had slipped into the role as easily as if it had been a tailored suit, it had been she, after all, who was the first to think of Steve’s needs on his return from the San, while Len had been too absorbed in Mike’s role in the accident, and that was something else she added to the list of grievances she nursed against the boy. “Drat him, it’s his own fault anyway, if he hadn’t been such a pest all his life no one would have thought about blaming him. I’m sure I only said what everyone else was thinking anyway. He didn’t have to go rushing off like that and making everyone feel sorry for him.”
She wilfully ignored the small part of her conscience which told her that she was in the wrong, and persisted in blaming all her troubles on Mike not realising that her outburst was symptomatic of the problems she had in readapting herself to her family.

Another Maynard seething with resentment, lovely to see how disfunctional they really are.

#1171:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Thu Apr 29, 2004 11:56 am

Jennie - I think that Len just expected that she could walk in the door and resume her former role, forgetting that everyone had adapted to her absence and that they, Con especially after emerging from her sisters shadow, would not be ready to hand everything back over to her. That's what I meant anyway - maybe it's not come across as clearly as I intended. At the moment she's blaming Mike rather than facing up to the fact that she's not as indispensible as she once thought.

Mike lay in the attic until the small hours of the morning, trying to make sense of everything.
Like his sister Margot, he was content to skim across the surface of life, taking each day as it came and contriving to make the best of it, whatever it may bring forth, and choosing not to think to deeply about anything, yet he was not wholly oblivious to the strong currents which flowed below the ocean of life, and he was particularly acutely aware that Charles was presently stranded on a sandbank struggling to decide in which direction he should strike out when the tide of live finally flowed over his temporary haven.
It had been a casual remark, a few years back. Mike no longer recalled how the subject had cropped up, but his mocking remark about Charles going on to be a priest had been greeted with a silence which told him that he had hit the mark. But that was before the cricket, before Charles’ extraordinary talent had become obvious even to himself.
Since then he had had the opportunity to follow his brothers progress at first hand, he hadn’t needed to hear Charles retelling the tale of his achievements, his pleasure and excitement had been blatantly obvious to the whole school, he had been spoken of as a possible future England batsman, and who could not fail to be seduced by the prospect of such a glittering future.
Had it been Mike who had been blessed with such an opportunity, he would have not thought twice before casting off his earlier ideas and grasping the future with both hands, but Charles was different. It was obvious to Mike now that his jibe about Charles becoming a priest had arisen from his latent awareness that his brother was the most deeply religious, the most spiritually responsive member of the family, that he could never take such a decision so lightly, that for Charles, the act of reaching out and taking what he wanted from life would be a betrayal of his Lord, of the purpose that he had been created for.

Great, Ellie. Poor Len is suffering from the inevitable pangs of moving on and not realising that the old environment as changed while she is away. I think it happens to us all and is a constant problem with grown children when they visit home. They are sometimes stunned by the fact that the home has not remained in stasis.

I think this is a wake up call for Mike and looking forward to hearing if he learns from it ----- a semi-disguised plea for more, of course Wink

Mike awoke with a jerk, listening to the scratching noise that had disturbed him, and wondering, for the moment, where he was, then the events of the previous day came flooding back, and the memory of the decision he had made before sleep finally claimed him. Already it seemed a hard and unattractive choice, “But I said I’d do it, and I’ve got to go through with it now, if only Chas is all right.” He muttered to himself.
He sat up, having no idea how long he had been asleep, and the windowless attic gave him no clue, nor was there any point in looking at his watch, but it felt as though it were morning, time to get into his own bed before he was missed. He had no wish to be the cause of any more alarms for his family. “Though they probably won’t even notice if I’m there or not, anyway.” he thought miserably.
He picked his way carefully across the attic, fearful of making a noise and disturbing the rest of the household, especially Anna, who he knew slept on the upper floor, albeit on the opposite side of the house. He knew from experience that the maid was a light sleeper, and that she didn’t take kindly to having her slumber disturbed.
Long familiarity with the attic and it’s contents enabled him to negotiate the obstacles with no more than a few minor bumps and a brush with a cobweb, and he emerged onto the upper landing to find that the only light came from the faint glimmerings of the stars dimly visible through the skylight.
He carefully walked down the first flight of stairs, and then the next. This time he had the subdued glow of the night life left burning on the lower landing to guide him. He had reached the bottom of the stairs, within sight of his bedroom door, when his mother suddenly emerged from the bathroom.
“Mike! What on earth?”

Actually Lesley, it's @156,500 words so far, rather lessthan the total of the Real CS series I think, (of which you only have another, what is it, 54 to write to complete the series Wink )

As for when it's finished - the sequel will be in Nicci's more than capable hands whilst I retire from writing.

And I did mean to write more today, honest, then I found out we had been invited to a BBQ so I didn't - and as the punch was very plentiful, and seemingly innocuous, I don't really think I could write anything very sensible tonite.

Tomorrow maybe, unless I'm sufferig from the after effects of said punch.

ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL

Ellie, when you first mentioned that I should write as many episodes as the CS series (back in Santa) I nearly had a heart attack! Now it actually seems that could be possible - as well as the next one I've already got ideas for the one after - a serious obsession!!

(Running total for three episodes written - 238,294 words!)

Looking forward to more of Tensions as soon as you are in a fit state to write, Ellie! Laughing

I'm pleased to hear that you think the idea of a series is feasible, Lesley, but come to think of it, why stop at 58? Wink

Joey had awoken, dry mouthed and nauseous, and had headed to the bathroom for a glass of water, hoping that it would settle her stomach one way or the other. In fact she had scarcely swallowed the water before she was violently sick. Despite cleaning her face and brushing teeth afterwards, she was feeling distinctly second hand by the time she left the bathroom, and was thankful that at this time of the morning she need not go to the trouble of trying to hide her indisposition from the rest of her family, so she was more than a little disconcerted to see her third son suddenly emerge from the shadows.
Any slight annoyance she felt, though, was quickly forgotten when she looked properly at the picture of misery which stood before her. “Mike, you poor kid, whatever have you been doing?” The boy’s reddened eyes and the streaks on his grimy face told their own story, but Joey was tactful enough to ignore the fact, she reached out and put her arm around his shoulders, drawing him back into the bathroom, “Come on, lets get you cleaned up and into bed.
The fact that he submitted quietly, for perhaps the first time in his life, whilst she sponged his face with a flannel told her all she needed to know about his state of mind.
“Goodness, you’re freezing, I’ll run a hot bath for you, then you can have a good soak while I pop a hot water bottle in your bed, and bring you some warm milk.” She suited her action to her words and turned the taps on, “Go on,” She gave Mike a gentle nudge, “It won’t take long to fill.”
Mike didn’t move, in truth he was a little overwhelmed by this treatment, but although he was grateful for his mother’s unquestioning kindness, it wasn’t what he felt he needed at that moment.
“What is it, Mikey boy?” Joey stopped bustling around to speak to him gently.
“Chas, is he, will he be blind?”
“Of course he won’t, nor was he ever likely to have been. Whatever made you think he would be? There’s nothing wrong with his other eye, and hopefully his injured eye will recover completely, in time. The doctors managed to get the metal out, and they say it’s not as bad as they first feared. Now, I’m not saying that he’ll be back to normal straight away, it could take weeks, if not months, but hopefully, it will come. Now, the best thing you can do to help Charles is to stop being so morbid and hurry up and get into that bath before the water gets cold, then you can go and try to get a good nights sleep, or what’s left of the night anyway, otherwise you won’t be any good for anything, or anyone.”
Mike took one reluctant step towards the bath, still not daring to quiet believe, “You, you d mean that? That he’ll get better? You’re not just saying it to make me go to bed?”
“We’ve never lied to any of you Mike, we may have shielded you sometimes, when we thought you were too young to know certain things, but we haven’t lied to you. And I think you’re old enough to face up to the truth now, however unpalatable it may be. As far as anyone can tell, Charles will be all right, there’s no absolute guarantee of course, but at the moment he’s doing as well as anyone could hope for, and a lot better than we could have hoped for a few hours ago.”
Mike turned away to hide the sudden hot watery feeling in his eyes. He still didn’t feel the sense of joy that he had expected, but his mother’s words, and the implicit trust he had in his parents, had given him the reassurance he so desperately craved.

Awww! Ellie, that was lovely -Joey's attitude was exactly right. Hopefully poor Mike will feel able to talk to her.

(Lesley trying womanfully to ignore Ellie's suggestion at the top of the last post....)
