#406:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 10:52 pm

But it won't be today, my dear(s) It's a 05.00 alarm clock tomorrow, so this will be the last post of the night.

Jack turned away before Joey could see the look of anger and disgust on his face, “I think,” he forced himself to speak calmly, “That Anna would like to see for herself that you are safe and well, the poor woman has been blaming herself for your disappearance.”
“Why? What did she do?”
“Nothing, except for not coming to check on you every five minutes.”
“Was she supposed to? No? Then there’s no need for her to make a fuss is there, anyway, she’ll see that I’m all right tomorrow.” Joey replied in an offhand manner. Anna was a treasure, but Joey had long ago decided that their relationship could only work on an employer/employee footing, and nothing in the intervening years had caused her to change her mind, whilst she my very well have paid a brief visit to Anna’s sickbed, dispensing grapes and charity, she felt it was hardly appropriate for Anna to visit her.
“It might be a way of proving that your worthy of the devotion you’re always boasting about,” Jack muttered under his breath, too quietly for Joey to hear, but she was no longer thinking of Anna.
“Jack, tell me something please?”
“What’s that?” he turned to see her looking at him with an expression of anxiety, almost fear.
“Is, is Eu, you haven’t said anything about my hair.”
“The doctor said you’d had it cut. I don’t know why you didn’t get it done years ago, it suits you better short.”
“But, I thought you liked my hair long.”
“I didn’t like those ridiculous earphones, they may have been ok when you were twenty, but they’re hardly the thing for this day and age, especially when they’re shot through with grey.”
“Oh.” Joey turned away as her eyes filled with tears.
Jack felt suddenly ashamed of himself, “I’m sorry Joey, that was a cheap shot, I shouldn’t have said that. But you didn’t want to talk about your hair did you?”
“Yes. No. I though you’d be furious with me.” She whispered.
“Well, I’m not. Not about that anyway. Now if you want me to answer any questions you had better hurry up and spit them out, the nurse will be back with Gwyn, I mean Hilda, in a minute then I’ll be going.”
“So soon?”
“Joey, I’ve been awake since six o’clock yesterday morning, if I don’t leave soon, I won’t be capable of doing anything. I’m only waiting so that you and Hilda can say goodbye to one another, I don’t just grab one of the brats and take off without telling anybody where I’m going, so what did you want to know?”
Before Joey could reply the door opened again, and one of the children’s nurses walked in with child, “There you are Mr Maynard, she’s all fed and changed and ready to go aren’t you honey?”
“Pappa,” Hilda wound her arms round his neck and clumsily kissed his ear, “Us go home, Pappa, don’t like it here, Mamma won’t get up.”
“Yes, soon, say goodbye to mamma first, she can’t come home yet.”
“No, she won’t get up,”
“She can’t, she’s feeling poorly, she’ll be up again soon, now go and give her a kiss goodbye.” Jack handed her to Joey, who clung to her for long enough for Hilda to start wriggling in an effort to escape.
Jack brought an end to it by firmly taking her from Joey’s arms. “We have to go now. I’ll see you tomorrow, Joey.”
“Bye bye Hilda,” Joey blew the child a kiss, but she wasn’t looking. “Us go, Pappa, want Anna.” she whined.
“And you shall have her soon, Anna is here waiting for you.” The words he addressed to the child were affectionate enough, the glare he bestowed on Joey was anything but.

Hilda wants Anna more than she wants her own mum - not good!

I was basically raised by a nanny (she only just stopped working for my family - I'm the baby at 27!). But, when my parents were still very important in my life and I would still always go to them (if they were around) when I needed huggles.

#422:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2004 11:13 pm

As it turned out, young Hilda did not get to return home straight away. Jack had spoken truthfully to Joey when he said that he did not feel capable of doing much more, and since he would have to return to Montreux the following day to collect Joey herself from the hospital, it made sense for him to take rooms in a hotel for the night.
Thus it was that as he negotiated the streets of the city he caused a minor collision on the pavement as Phil Maynard, who was near the front of a ‘crocodile’ comprising the members of her form suddenly came to a dead stop, proclaiming “That was Minnie - someone must have stolen her, we only use her in the summer.”
Once Kathie Ferrars had sorted out the resulting melee, and delivered a few choice words on the standard of behaviour expected in public, she continued to shepherd her charges to the Musée de l'Alimentation, although she was inwardly seething with curiosity, and desperate for the opportunity to find a telephone to contact the school.

“What?” Rosalie stepped forward and snatched the diary from the man’s hand, she stood staring at the smudged writing, the colour draining from her face as she made out the individual words, “Not Helen A,” she spoke in little more than a whisper, “Not Helen A, Helena, Helena Wilson. It looks like Bill’s handwriting.

Jem, being one of the party furthest away from the school, was one of the last to hear the news that Joey and the child had been found, safe if not entirely sound. Consequently he was one of the last to arrive back at the school. Eschewing the company of his fellow searchers, he entered the school by the front door, hoping to be revived by a cup of the staff’s famed milky coffee and a snorter of brandy.
He was none too pleased to find that there was no-one to welcome him back from his exhausting endeavours. Hilda, unknown to him, as still sleeping sweetly, much against her expectations, sheer exhaustion, coupled with the strain of the last few days having finally got the better of her. Rosalie seemed to have deserted her post entirely, and those other members of staff who had joined the search party were making there way back at their own leisurely pace. Having had the benefit of a full nights sleep they were still energetic enough to decide to make the most of their remaining free time.
He wandered around the corridors, looking signs of life and called out a few times, but his shouts went unheard and unanswered by those on the uppermost floor, and Hilary, who thought she heard something above the music playing on the radio was not inclined to investigate.
“Hmmph. This is a fine state of affairs, I must say,” he muttered to himself, “he doors unlocked so that anyone could walk in, and no-one here to stop them. I’ll be talking to Hilda about this when I see her. I suppose I’d better stay here myself.” He settled himself down in Rosalie’s to wait. When no-one had turned up after ten minutes, he decided to make himself more comfortable, leaving the adjoining doors open, he wondered through into Hilda Annersley’s study where he settled down in the armchair. Before many more minutes had passed he was sleeping as soundly as that lady herself.

#439:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:43 pm

A little bit more, but there never seems to be enough hours in the day when I work from 06.00 to 14.00, it's having to go to bed so stupidly early thats the problem.......

Rosalie stepped forward and snatched away the blankets which Lesley had placed over the patient in an effort to keep the older lady warm, totally ignoring Lesley’s protests about this treatment.
Rosalie stood looking at the woman for several long seconds before she spoke.

“Mrs Maynard, are you all right?” The nurse looked down at the injured woman in some concern.
“No, I’m fine really.”
“Is it your husband that has upset you? I suggested to Dr Sebastien that he should maybe not speak to him without asking you. If there is anything troubling you, you can talk to me.”
“I don’t want to talk, thank you.” Joey replied, somewhat coldly. “Why,” she was thinking, “was she suddenly being expected to talk to all and sundry? She didn’t even know the nurse, yet she was expecting to be taken into her confidence.”
“In that case, I’m sorry I spoke.” The nurse continued to bustle around in silence, until, her tasks complete, she walked out, her head held high.
Joey watched her go with some relief, what she really wanted was to be left alone, to try to sort out the conflicting thoughts which moved sluggishly through her murky brain.
“One thing at a time, Joey, one thing at a time,” she told herself, forcing down the shard of resentment that had cut through her when Hilda had asked for Anna, as she tried to concentrate on Eugen.
She had the vague feeling that someone had told her Eugen was dead, and yet, how could they have - there was no-one in this hosital who knew him, or of her connection to him, yet the ominous feeling would not go away. It was that which she had wanted to ask Jack, yet she had hesitated, afraid of the answer, and talked about her hair instead, and then Hilda had been returned, and the moment had gone and Hilda had asked for Anna. In her place.
The tears which had fallen so easily that day welled up again, as she remembered the child’s words, and thought bitter thoughts against the maid who had wormed her way into her daughter’s affections.
“How dare she, how dare she try to tempt my daughter away from me?” She brooded, “After all I’ve done for her, she turns round and treats me like that? We’ll see how she manages in the real world, when she has to look after herself, she certainly isn’t going to be a viper in the nest in my house any more. But perhaps I should have spoken to her, maybe she could have told me about Eugen. Please God, don’t let him be dead.” She reached out instinctively for Hilda, but the child was gone, all she could do was bury her head under the covers, and cling to the pillow.

“That’s not Nell Wilson.” said Rosalie, “I don’t know who this bloody woman is, or what she’s doing with Nell’s things, but she is not Nell Wilson, get her out of here before she starts upsetting Hilda.” She turned and fled from the room, thankful only that she hadn’t allowed herself to hope, too much.

And what will it take to turn Joey into a normal person. She has another think coming if she thinks it will be harder for Anna to live without Joey than for Joey to live without Anna.

I'm sure Anna could cope 'in the real world' a lot better than Joey. And I find it ironic Joey was annoyed when the nurse tried to find out what was troubling her, considering Joey expects every new girl to pour out her troubles.

#447:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 7:41 am

And why is Jo clinging to Eugen in her mind? Was there more than met the eye with that relationship, or did Jo just imagine there was?

Ellie, this is great! Throwing all Jo's expectations and whatnot back into her face is fabulous.

Just one question - do you know where it's going to end?

Just caught up. Thank goodness I didn't have to go through the trauma of waiting to find out if it was Bill or not!

I had hope for Joey and Jack a few installments ago, but that quickly changed. I can't say I'm very impressed with Jo's attitude towards Anna. But more than anything I just feel very very sorry for her.

Thank you Ellie, terrible as it sounds, in this drabble I didn't want it to be Nell - purely because it would have meant all I put Hilda through, and the letter itself, were a lie - and they didn't feel like a lie!

Abit late tonight - sorry, I fainted clean away at the suggestion that I should continue writing this for as long as there was breath left in my body Shocked
There's not much new in this bit, just a sort of review of the situation, but it's helped me to get to the next part (which will follow tomorrow, I've still got to make sandwiches and take doggy for walkies before I go to bed)
Also, please may I take the opportunity to say that I can quite sypathise with EBD and her 'isms', (although I don't extend that generosity to her editors,) and also add that, since later events in this story have had an effect on what went before, there will be inconsistences - the one disadvantage of posting as you write.

Rosalie ran back down the stairs to her own office, her one idea being to somehow get the mysterious woman in the sick quarters removed from the school premises before Hilda Annersley found out about her very existence.
In Rosalie’s opinion, Hilda had been through far too much already during the first half of the term, since before the term even started, when they had lived through the worry of waiting for news of Bill, an then there had been the awful confirmation that all their worst fears had come true, then there had been the terrible time when Hilda had been so totally consumed by her loss and her grief that her friends had only been able to watch, helplessly, as she seemed fated to succumb to a lingering death from a broken heart.
The whole school had suffered from the aftermath, both of the loss and of Miss Annersley’s lessening of the control she had over the total microcosm that was the school. Rosalie knew that the head felt she was in some way culpable for not noticing Matey’s blithe dispensing of drugs to the girls and staff. And it wasn’t as if that mess was cleared up yet, not by a long chalk.
Rosalie knew too, that Hilda had suffered from grave concerns about allowing her charges off the premises to celebrate the half term holiday at all, even though she recognised there was no logic in her fears, and that it would be grossly unfair to the girls to curb their activities, but there was little doubt that she would not feel at ease until everyone was safely back.
Then, as if that wasn’t enough, she had had the added worry of Joey Maynard’s disappearance, the sadness of Eugen Courvosier’s death, and the strain of sitting through the night with the recently bereaved Biddy. All in all, Rosalie thought she had suffered quite enough, without the shock of finding a strange woman in the school san, in possession of Miss Wilson’s personal possessions. It never occurred to Rosalie that the mysterious visitor might be fulfilling Bill’s last wish, delivering her property to the one who who had the most rightful claim upon them.
She scambled into her office, emitting a sudden squawk as she noticed the open door leading to Hilda’s study, and the man snoring in the armchair, his legs stretched out before him.
“Jem, I’m so glad you’re here,” recognition dawned, and she rushed into the study to greet the man, “Jem, you have to help me.”

Sorry to keep you waiting, I wrote it at work while they took the system down to patch Microsofts latest security glitch, but the e-mail didn't turn up until this morning.

Eh, what's that," Jem awoke with a start, momentarily unsure of his surroundings, and his disorientation anything but improved by Rosalies's call's of distress. "Rosalie? What's wrong old girl?" He looked at her with bafflement.
"That woman, upstairs, the one they brought back, she's got Bill's things, her diary anyway, and probably her handbag, and I'm not sure but I thought she was wearing Bill's skirt too. We've got to get her out of here, Jem, I won’t have some imposter turning up here pretending to be Bill, I won’t. That nurse of your’s is settling her into one of the beds, you’ve got to stop her, you’re a doctor, you can over rule her, make her go to the San, I won’t have Hilda finding out about this.”
Jem stared at her, open mouthed, never before had he seen the normally unflappable Rosalie in such a state of excitement. “Whoa, hold your horses old girl, and go through that again, you’re not making an awful lot of sense you know.”
“There isn’t time, we’ve got to get rid of her, before Hilda finds out.”
“Before Hilda finds out about what?”
Rosalie spun round to see the head standing in the doorway. “If you don’t want me to find out about something, it might be more sensible to refrain from shouting as much at the top of your voice.” Hilda admonished her, “And it seems to me that there has been far too much happening in this school recently that I know nothing about, so I suggest you follow Jem’s advice and go through it all again, somewhat less hysterically.”
Jem, seeing Rosalie flush unhappily under Hilda’s scrutiny, felt honour bound to speak up for the younger woman, “Don’t be too hard on her, Hilda, I think she was only trying to protect you, eh Rosalie?”
Rosalie nodded speechlessly.
“I appreciate your concern, my dear,” the hint of coldness had left Hilda’s voice, “But don’t you see? It’s partly because I didn’t know what was happening in the school that we have all these problems now. Now, make us all some coffee while I order some food from the kitchen, then you can tell me all about the latest sensation.”
Rosalie retold her tale in a greatly more subdued manner than previously as she sipped at her coffee, while Hilda and Jem shared a plate of hot buttered crumpets.
“But whatever made you think this woman was pretending to be Nell?” Hilda patted her lips with her napkin as Rosalie drew to a close. “If that was the case, this would be the last place she would choose to come, knowing as she would that we would all see through that ploy the moment we set eyes on her. I could understand one of the more hare brained middles jumping to such an assumption, but it’s not what I’ve grown to expect from you Rosalie.”
“I think you can be forgiven, under the circumstances,” Jem interjected, “After all, you must have hoped, for a moment, that Nell really had returned from the dead, so to speak, and then to have your hopes dashed like that.”
Rosalie turned pink and averted her face before Jem could read her expression, but not quickly enough to prevent Hilda from noticing the love struck expression which she was unable to control.
Hilda glanced at her sympathetically before returning to the subject of the stranger among them.

Hilary placed ‘Dimsie among the Prefects’ on the floor beside her prior to standing up and stretching her muscles. The nurse had asked her to promise not to leave her room, but she had also given her permission to read the books, something which Hilary could not do unless she ventured through the connecting door to the small abode. After due consideration, she decided that in this case the words ’this room’ could safely be interpreted to mean Nurse Green’s personal quarters, and had, rather furtively crept into the other room, snatched one of the books and returned to the armchair, but after being left for so long, she was beginning to tire of staying in one place.
She was also tired of reading, she had enjoyed Dimsie, but she had no mind to begin another book, and even the radio was beginning to pall. All in all Hilary was beginning to get thoroughly bored. She was also, after all the drinks she had consumed, suffering from another problem, one which would only get more urgent as time went on.
“I know I promised to stay here,” She wriggled uncomfortably, “But she couldn’t have meant to leave me here this long, something must be very wrong. Well, I can’t help it. I’m simply going to have to go at some point, and it might as well be now as when it’s nearly too late.”
Her mind made up, she ran to the nearest bathroom, making sure that she spent as little time as possible out of the room. Even so, she heard the sound of hasty footsteps running down the stairs as she walked back along the corridor. “I might have expected this to happen,” she thought to herself, and turned reluctantly to face the wrath of her nemesis, disguised as Rosalie Dene.
Rosalie pushed passed her, white faced and silently, as if unaware of her presence.
Hilary’s first reaction was a very simple degree of satisfaction at having escaped so easily, but by the time she re-entered Nurse Green’s domain, that satisfaction had been converted to a nagging worry about the secretary’s behaviour, and the cause of it.

It certainly would have been nice to have Bill back, wouldn't it? She might have been able to get to the bottom of things. I have to say that I'm finding Hilda a rather ineffectual character in this story, which is unusual.

Thanks Ellie all that lovely story was wonderful.

Lesley - it will be the first thing I pack.
KB - Hilda is actually finding it quite hard work being a headmistress at the moment, sorry.
All those at the Auberge - you will let me share in your goodies won't you? And let me squawk at the echo and hear it being transformed into the sweetest of tones?

Hilary picked up the discarded Dimsie book and returned it to the bookcase in the bedroom, lingering to gaze out of the window whilst she tried to put her thoughts in order. Someone, judging by Miss Dene’s appearance, was almost dead, if they had not already reached that stage.
“In the twinkling of an eye I was changed.” Hilary shivered as the words on a familiar gravestone rose unbidden in her mind. From the very first time she had read them, they had instilled in her a deep dread, a fearful awareness of how suddenly life could end. Most of the time, living her life to the full among the chatter of her friends, she had no cause to bring them to mind, but standing alone and forgotten by the window, aware that some drama was being played out on the floor above her, there was nothing to put the fetters on her morbid thoughts.
She could at least console herself with the knowledge that none of her classmates were on the Platz, despite the fact she had been at odds with them, or perhaps because of that reason, she felt she could not have borne it if anything had happened to any of the girls she had come to spend so much time with, even those she did not particularly care for.
She knew however, that several of the mistresses had remained at the school, or in the surrounding area during the short break, and it was but a short step to convincing herself that it was one of those ladies who had suffered a grievous mishap. She ran through the staff in her mind, trying to decide who, if anyone, she would rather it be, until she suddenly realised what she was doing and forced herself to stop, immediately. “It’s as if death follows me around as it is, without me nominating candidates,” She mused unhappily, “Is this perhaps to be my punishment, that people will die wherever I go, but oh, how can I live like that.” She stared bleakly out of the window, adrift in her own misery.

“You did say this lady was cold and weak, Rosalie, not that she was ill?” Hilda asked, suddenly aware of what a case of infection could mean to the health of her charges.
“That is what I heard,” Rosalie replied, “That’s why Dr Thompson told the men to bring her here.”
“Hmmph, I hope that’s true, but from what I’ve seen of Thompson he would probably find it amusing to send an infection into the middle of the school, he’s a strange character, that one, but never mind eh? At least it’s half term and we can move her to the San with no harm done if it seems necessary.”
Hilda glared at him in exasperation but refrained from making any comment, instead she turned to her secretary again, “Do you think she will be able to talk to us, Rosalie?”
“I would doubt it, from what I saw of her earlier, but I expect that Nurse Green, or Jem could give you a more accurate opinion than I.”
“What? Yes, of course, it won’t do any harm to take a look at her I suppose.” Jem rose from his seat, an action copied by the two woman, “There’s no point in you coming too Rosalie, we don’t want to overwhelm the poor woman do we?” Privately Jem thought there was little point in Hilda accompanying him either, nothing that Rosalie had said had led him to believe that the woman was in any fit state for visitors, but he was not convinced of the wisdom of telling the head what she may or may not do in her own school.
Hilda, who had no intention of allowing him to do any such thing, made her feelings clear in the regal manner in which she swept out of the study.
Her point made, she paused to allow Jem to catch her up, “Actually I’m glad that I have the opportunity to speak to you privately, Jem.”
“There’s nothing wrong is there?” Jem asked as he surveyed her appearance, noticing anew the signs of frailness which had developed over the last few weeks.
“No, of course not,” Hilda’s reply was not wholly convincing to Jem’s ears, but he decided that it would probably do more harm than good to press the issue at the present time.
“What is it then?”
Biddy, for one thing. I’m worried about her Jem, last night she kept insisting that it was all fault that Eugen died, because she hadn’t been a good wife to him. Nonsense of course, but there was nothing I could say or do to make her think otherwise. Not only that, but she’s also now believing that Joey’s disappearance is down to her too, she’s saying if she hadn’t gone for Jack the way she did, Joey would have had no cause to take off the way she did. Do you think you could pay her a visit Jem, Hilary’s with her at the present, but she has her own family and I really don’t like the idea of Biddy being alone in her present frame of mind.”
“She didn’t seem particularly pleased to see me yesterday, but yes, I’ll call in if you think it will help, otherwise I’ll put Phil Graves onto her case, since he’s a friend of hers. I don’t know what’s brought this on though, it was all the fault of Jack in particular and the San in general yesterday. Maybe I shouldn’t have allowed her home so soon, but to be honest, she was making a bit of a nuisance of herself.”
“I doubt if you could have stopped her from going home if that was what she wanted, and as to what brought this on, I would say it’s down to Joey.”
“Hmmm.” Jem was saved from further comment as arrived at the door of the sick quarters, empty now of the men who had carried the collapsed woman to the bed.

Once inside Hilda hung back whilst Jem approached the nurse, “How is your patient Nurse Green?”
“A lot warmer, Sir, thankfully it hasn’t been too cold recently, otherwise, well I don’t think she would have the resources to fight it. She sees generally weak, and rather too thin, I doubt that she has had much to eat recently, but she is sleeping normally, her pulse is steady and she’s having no problems breathing. Would you like to see her, I would of course value your considered opinion.” Lesley had long ago learned that massaging the doctor’s egos made her own life much easier, and she kept her face perfectly straight whilst she invited the doctor to look at the patient.
Jem, visibly satisfied at receiving the respect he believed was his due approached the bed, but since he had no wish to disturb the patient he contented himself with observing the sleeping woman and gently taking hold of her wrist to feel her pulse, it was, as Nurse Green had observed, slightly weak, and the thinness of her arms caused him some concern, but essentially her underlying health seemed reasonable enough.
“I’d say she’ll need feeding up once she awakens,” He delivered his verdict, “Nothing too solid though, to start with, lots of milk and a good nourishing soup or porridge should do the trick. Don’t try to make her eat too much at once though, little and often is the best thing.”
“Yes, sir, I’ll do that.” Lesley replied blandly.
“Good, when she’s able to receive visitors miss Annersley would like to talk to her, you will keep her informed of course.”
“Of course, Sir.”
“And if there is any change in her condition call one of the doctors over from the San.” Jem paused, “Probably not Thompson, though, I gather that he rather abdicated responsibility for her earlier.
“I wouldn’t know, sir, I wasn’t there.”
“I doubt that the need will arise, anyway. Just make sure that you keep a close eye on her. Is that girl of your’s around?”
“Girl? Oh you mean Isabelle, she has gone to see some friends for the weekend, she left last night.”
“Pity, never mind, see if you can get one of the maids to sit with her for a while, there’s no need for you to be here every minute of the night, and you’ll not be much use to her tomorrow if you are.” Jem nodded and walked back to the door, gently but firmly escorting Hilda out of the room.
“Come along, Hilda, she’s sleeping at the moment, and there’s nothing to be gained by waking her, I know you’re eager to speak to her but that’s no reason for you hang around here fretting. You can speak to her tomorrow, in the meantime I’d suggest you get some more rest yourself.”
Hilda shook her head, “As tempting as that thought is, I have other duties to perform first, for one thing, I haven’t been to see Jeanne Lachenais or the other girls since I took them across to the San.”
Jem’s protestations came to nought, Hilda was not to be dissuaded from visiting Matey’s victims.

Sorry this is only short - I couldn't write anymore after reading Angel's drabble.

Jem’s mention of “You’re girl” had brought Hilary back to mind, indeed for one moment Lesley had imagined that it was she to whom Jem had been referring. Casting one last glance at the mystery woman to ensure that she was still sleeping peacefully, Lesley took off her apron and hurried down the stairs to her own rooms. The small living room, dimly lit at the best of times, was in semi - darkness and she began to think that Hilary had lost patience after such a long wait and had gone to help Miss Dene after all, despite being instructed not to leave the room.
“Not that I can blame her, I have been rather an age.” the nurse mused, “I may as well collect my night clothes while I’m here, since there’s no one else to keep an eye on the woman overnight. I could throttle that Thompson, there’s no earthy reason for him to send her here instead of to the San.” She walked through to the bedroom, thinking vengeful thoughts about the young doctor, thus it was she almost missed the small figure of Hilary sitting on the floor, hugging her knees to her body staring blankly at nothing out of eyes filled with despair.

Oh, golly, poor Hilary!

And I agree that Jem deserves to be slapped around with something - I'm thinking a bit of four by two!

Poor Hilary and pool Lesley being thrust into dealing with her problems - surely there are other mistresses back by now!

Just had a nasty thought - is this mystery woman just worn out or is she going to be contagious as Jem thought?

Inclined to agree that Jem is the worst kind of old fashioned autocratic doctor and needs the 2 x 4 treatment.

*thinks: That's an emotional cliff. Put's up a warning notice "the edge of this cliff is crumbly"*

Thank you Pat, very much. I promise I will eventually master this art of self restraint Very Happy

#553:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 4:26 am

Sorry about this, but it will get happier soon, I promise.

“Hilary, Whatever’s the matter child?” Lesley almost stumbled over the small figure as she walked around the bed to pull to the curtains, and he gazed half fearfully at the girls unmoving stance, puzzled as to could possibly have caused such extreme unhappiness, “Hilary, if you don’t want to tell me that’s fine, but whatever it is, it can’t be that bad, surely?” She squatted down on the floor beside the girl and placed an arm around her shoulders, speaking to her softly.
Her tender concern served to break down Hilary’s restraint, and the tears which she had been fighting back for so long broke through the barricade she had erected and cascaded down her cheeks, but she wriggled away from the nurses grasp, “No! Don’t be kind to me, I don’t deserve it, it’s all my fault.”
“What’s all your fault?” Lesley cast a wild glance around the room, wondering if Hilary had performed some dreadful deed, but all looked in order. “What’s all your fault, dear? What do you think you’ve done?”
It was very difficult for Lesley to understand Hilary’s incoherent reply, after finally translating her sobbed and gulped words as “It’s my fault the mistresses are dead,” she decided that she couldn’t understand what the girl was saying at all.
“Hilary, stop this nonsense at once. Unless you’ve completely taken leave of your senses, you’re spouting a load of rubbish, now stop crying and go and wash your face.”
Hilary did make an heroic effort to regain control of herself, but being the kind of person who habitually contrived to contain her emotions, she found it next to impossible not to be completely and utterly overwhelmed by her feelings once that control had been vanquished. Lesley’s sharp tones had made some impression, but her attempts to calm herself lasted only for as long as it took her to glance up and see the sympathy and concern in the nurses eyes, and all Lesley’s further attempts to console the girl were totally ineffectual.
It was unfortunate that Lesley assumed she had misheard Hilary’s earlier plaintive sobs, for she failed to say the one thing that may have helped, that none of the mistresses were dead.
Lesley looked at her helplessly, and slightly impatient that Hilary was refusing to be comforted, although, truth be told, more than a little of that impatience was directed towards herself, for her own failure to make a difference.
“Hilary, please, if you don’t get a grip of yourself I’m going to have to ask Dr Russell to give you something to calm you down, and you don’t want that do you?”
“Yes. Please, Please. I can’t bear it.” Hilary’s words, were indistinct, interspersed with her plaintive sobs, yet there was little doubt about her meaning, nor the pleading expression on her face when she glanced up.
Lesley bit her lip, almost wishing she hadn’t made the suggestion, she did not, on the whole, approve of administering sedatives to school girls, except in very exceptional circumstances, and her words had been an attempt to try to shock Hilary out of the prolonged bout of weeping, and yet, maybe this was an exceptional circumstance, and Hilary herself had asked her to go ahead, if an adult in the same situation had made the same request Lesley would have had fewer qualms about acceding to it, therefore, was it fair to deny the girl the same help? Certainly nothing else had made any impression upon her, , and if she continued as she was, she really would make herself ill.
Lesley made a sudden decision, “All right, if that’s what you want, I’ll go and fetch him, OK?” She thought she saw Hilary’s head nod, but that could have been due to the violence of her tears, “Wait here then,” She added unnecessarily, before leaving her room to run downstairs, hoping that Sir James was still on the premises.

Nicci Shocked

This bit is't quite finished - ran out of time.....

Jack awoke refreshed by his nights sleep, Anna too was more like her old self, the relief of knowing that her beloved mistress and the precious Madchen were safe had restored her to her normal placidness.
Jack listened to the sound of her humming as she moved around her bedroom, thankful that he had given in to her demands to be allowed to accompany him to Montreux, and grateful for her practical common sense when she had gathered together a change of clothing not only for his daughter, but for himself and Joey too, before they had set off. Left to himself, he would have jumped into Minnie and driven off without a second thought .
“Pappa, where’s Mamma? Want to go home.” Hilda toddled over and rested her chubby little fingers on his knee.
“Later, sweetheart, we’ll fetch Mamma soon, then we can go home.”
“No.” Hilda shook her head vigorously, “We fetch her now?”
“Soon, after the doctor looks at her head.”
Hilda was silent for a few moments while she digested the information. “Thought you was doctor.” She said finally.
“Yes, but not a head doctor.”
“Want Mamma. Want to go home. Want Bruno.” Hilda screwed up her face to show her displeasure, before being distracted by the contents of the breakfast trolley which Jack had ordered from room service earlier. “Milk please?”
He poured her a drink, thankful that she was generally a happy soul who was content, mostly, to take life as it came. He was even more relieved to hear her asking for her mother. It had come as quite a shock the previous night when the child had demanded Anna, if she felt so distanced from her mother, from both her parents, that she preferred the company of the maid when she felt insecure, then they as a family, had far more problems than he had imagined.
“Is it soon, yet?” Hilda finished her milk and returned to her previous line of thought.
“Er, no, not yet.”
“How long is soon?”
“Not for a little while, not until after I’ve spoken to some people on the telephone.”
Hilda screwed up her face again, thoroughly disapproving of this delay. “You always talking to people,” she sulked.
“Maybe Anna will take you out for a walk while I’m using the telephone. Would you like that?”
“Yes, can Mamma come for walk too?”
“No sweetheart, the doctor won’t let her. You’ll be all right with Anna won’t you?”
“Yes.” Hilda wasn’t totally satisfied with the arrangements, but she was already experienced enough to know that further pleading would get her nowhere.
As if on cue, Anna emerged fro her own bedroom, with exclamations of horror at the food smeared on Hilda’s face. Jack had tried to wipe off the worst of the mess, but his efforts had not been entirely successful. The maid took the little girl away to clean her properly, happy in the knowledge that the family would never be able to cope without her help.
Had she known it, Jack was thinking exactly the same. Joey’s casual attitude to the maid had shocked him the night before, yet he had to admit that he too took Anna’s presence for granted. She had been with them almost since the first days of his and Joey’s marriage, a constant figure in the background, almost a part of the family, yet still separate from it.

One thing he was certain of was that Anna, with help from her co-adjuctor Rosli, was the glue which held the long family together. Help was not east to find on the Platz, and the school and San together absorbed most of those seeking to do such work, but even if there had been a queue of people clamouring to take Anna’s place, it was unlikely that they would have found anyone who would go so far beyond their normal duties, yet Anna had never demanded extra payment, or extra time off in lieu. Quite the contrary in fact, the only reward she seemed to seek was to be allowed to continue to serve them, despite the fact that she received precious little thanks. He had frequently heard Joey commentating on the quality of Anna’s baking when she received guests, but thinking about it, he had never once heard her say anything of the sort to Anna herself, although he couldn’t honestly say that Joey had not offered her such praise when he was not around.
It occurred to him that he owed her something for her quiet support over the last couple of days, despite her own misery she had been a solid lump of comfort, keeping vigil by the telephone throughout the night and much of the day, remembering to pack clothes and the other necessities for Hilda and Joey, and she had willingly offered to entertain Hilda after they returned from the hospital, allowing Jack the opportunity to catch up on his sleep even though she had scarcely had more rest than he.
Perhaps, he thought, he could make some gesture, flowers maybe, then again, maybe not. There was the possibility that Anna could interpret such a gift in the wrong way, he had no illusions about himself as an object of romantic attraction, but their was every possibility that she would be highly suspicious if the man of her house suddenly began bestowing gifts upon her, especially as she not be totally unaware that relations between Joey and himself were rather cool at the present time. On reflection, it might be better to express his gratitude verbally.
“Anna, may I just say something?”
Anna beamed with pleasure as Jack thanked her in a few brief but heartfelt sentences, the only thing which would increase her happiness would be to hear the sentiments expressed by her beloved mistress.

#608:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 1:25 am

Hmmm, I have paid the occasional visit Sarah, but I'm afraid it hassn't been writing that's kept me away more than I would have liked, but there is a little bit more....

Hilary awoke to an impression of light, unusual enough to leave her feeling disorientated for a few moments, until she realised that the light was due to the lack of curtains around her bed, this was rapidly followed by the realisation that, contrary to her first thoughts, no-one had been in and stolen the curtains in the night, she was in a different place entirely.
Gradually the memory of the previous day seeped back into her mind, causing her to groan loudly as she closed her eyes to blot out the world.
“Hilary, dear?” A figure walked over to the bed as if she had been waiting for this sign that Hilary was awake, which indeed she had been, “Hilary? How are you feeling?”
Hilary’s eyes were suddenly wide open as she heard the well known voice. “You’re not dead.”
“No, Hilary, I’m not dead, what ever made you think I was?” Miss Annersley replied softly.
“I, I don’t know, I’m not sure that I did, but if not you, then who…”
“No-one has died, Hilary, I promise,” Hilda fervently hoped that no disaster of which she had still not been informed had happened to any of the groups away for half term, “But something made you think that, didn’t it? Do you want to tell me about it my dear?”
“Nurse said there had been an accident, and Miss Dene, the way she came rushing down the stairs, it, I thought someone had been killed.”
Hilda looked at her, puzzled at the way Hilary had jumped to such an extreme conclusion on such slender evidence. If Hilary had been a different type of girl she would have decided that her taste in reading matter could bear examination, but her instinct told her that there was much more behind Hilary’s behaviour in this case.
She paused to consider her next words, not wanting to provoke another outburst of the intensity which the nurse had described the previous night, in the meantime Hilary once again closed her eyes with a grimace.
“Your head hurts doesn’t it dear?”
“A bit, how did you know? My eyes ache, it’s so bright.”
“Yes it is, would you like to back to your own dormitory? I think you’ll be able to sleep now, won’t you?”
“Yes, I will, thank you.” Hilary whispered, “Miss Annersley, I’m sorry.”
“I know you are dear, but Hilary, none of this need have happened if you hadn’t been so eager to jump to conclusions, try and remember that in the future. Now, I’ll bathe your face for you, then I’ll take you to your own bed, then nurse will give you an aspirin and some hot milk.”
“Do I have to stay in bed all day?”
“Oh, I shouldn’t think so, not if you want to get up, I’ll come and see you later, and we’ll see how you feel then.”
“Miss Annersley?”
“Yes dear?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“You can, and you may.” Hilda waited for Hilary’s question, when the girl did speak it was not a question which Hilda had expected to hear.
“You wouldn’t lie to me would you?”
“No Hilary, I wouldn’t lie to you. If I don‘t want to answer your question I‘ll tell you so, but I won‘t lie to you.”
“Thank you.”

Finding that no more questions were forthcoming from Hilary, Miss Annersley decided, after she had got the girl settled, to go for a walk to clear her head.
It was unfortunate that she was so absorbed in the mystery about her fifth former that she strolled rather close to the edge of the cliff, it was even more unfortunate that a sudden strong gust of wind blew her slightly off balance, causing her to stumble on the gravelly edge, and yet more unfortunate still that she slid on the lose pebbles and

#630:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2004 12:24 am

Sorry for being so long - I've been writing my bedtime story, I can do short after all.

When Jack arrived at the hospital he found that Joey already had a visitor. The Montreux police did not take kindly to people attacking tourists to their town, and they were making every effort to trace Joey’s assailant. They had taken witness statements from the people who had reported seeing the man they believed to be responsible and from the descriptions given, they had procured an artist to produce a rough drawing which, they hoped, bore at least some resemblance to the suspect.
It was not the policeman who Joey had seen previously who had taken to picture to the hospital, but an older, calmer man, who encouraged her to examine the portrait carefully.
She studied it with a puzzled frown, feeling that there was some elusive quality in the face which she ought to recognise, but unable to tie it to any specific person. Maybe the tramp who had been hanging around the Tiernsee the previous summer, but that was unlikely. She shook her head, “I’m sorry, I don’t know who he could be, there is something vaguely familiar, but how often do you see people who remind you of someone else? Lot’s of people look superficially alike, besides which, if he attacked me at random, there’s no reason why I should know him is there?”
“That is true, but we have to pursue all lines of enquiry, you might have noticed him earlier in the day, perhaps.”
“Yes, I may have done, but since I can’t remember anything about that day, that isn’t much use is it?”
The policeman took the picture back, and then, because Jack was standing quietly just inside the door waiting for them to finish their discussion, he walked over and handed the picture to him, without any expectation of getting a result. “Am I correct in thinking you are Mrs Maynard’s husband, sir? In that case, would you mind taking a look at this picture to see if you recognise this man?”
Jack glanced at drawing, not expecting to see anyone he recognised, he began to shake his head, almost before he bothered to look, when something grabbed his attention and he snatched the paper from the policeman’s hand so as to study it more closely.
The policeman looked at him expectantly, “Do you recognise him sir?”
“I recognise him all right, but I can assure you he won’t look as good as that if I catch up with him.”
“Understandable sentiments sir, but I wouldn’t advise you to take the law into your own hands, that’s what we are here for. If you could tell me what you know about this man, we will be one step closer to bringing him to justice.”
“It’s a pity you didn’t come closer to bringing him to justice after I reported him the other day, his name is Reg Entwhistle,”
“Jack, no! Not Reg, he would never try to attack me, hasn’t the poor boy suffered enough without you making wild accusations against him?” A stricken Joey interrupted from the bed.
“I’m sorry Joey, but it is Reg. You haven’t seen him lately have you? “
“But Jack, how could it be? How could Reg turn into someone like, like this?” She gesticulated towards the drawing.
“He’s a doctor, was a doctor, at he Sanatorium on the Gornetz Platz,” Jack exclaimed for the benefit of the policeman, he was also, and I’m beginning to think this might be relevant, once engaged to our eldest daughter. It wass she that broke off the engagement. It seems that latterly, Entwhistle has taken to drinking heavily, very heavily. A couple of nights ago he completely wrecked his quarters at the San, broke into the dispensary and stole some drugs, mainly antibiotics, fortunately, assaulted a patient, and disappeared. I reported all this to one of your colleagues in our own district, Klinsmann I think, he assured me that he would have Entwhistles description circulated throughout the country. Apparently it hasn’t been circulated even as far as Montreux,” he finished accusingly.
“Klinssmann?” the policeman frowned, trying to recall where he had heard the name recently, “Ah, I remember, it is very sad, but Herr Klinssmann took a dive over the edge of the road when he was driving through the Oberland. It appears that he information you gave him died alongside him.”
Jack remembered hearing snippets of gossip concerning a motor vehicle accident, but at the time he had paid little attention, but it was too late now to wish that he had listened properly. “I’m sorry to hear that, please accept my condolences on behalf of his family and colleagues, and of course, I apologise unreservedly for my previous comments. I’m sure that now you know the full story you will make every effort to trace Entwhistle.”
“I can assure you of that sir, but I will need you to sign a formal statement. There will be no need to report the earlier crimes again in your own district, I shall make sure they are informed, but since he is no longer in that area, there is little point in them instigating a search for the man.”
“Unless he returns.”
“And why should he do that?”
Jack glanced over to the bed where a horrified Joey was hanging on to every word of the conversation.
This was not, he felt, the right time or circumstance for her to find out about the attack which Reg had perpetrated upon Con. “I mentioned the fact that Entwhistle attacked a patient,” he murmered in a low tone, “What I omitted to say was that patient was my daughter. My wife doesn‘t know about this yet, at my daughter‘s request I may add.”
“The one who broke off the engagement?”
“No, her sister. I wasn’t sure at the time if he specifically targeted her, or if it was coincidence, but considering what has happened here, I’m beginning to wonder if he is pursuing a vendetta against my family.”
“But would he know that your wife was planning to visit Montreux? According to our records you yourself had no idea where she was.”
“That’s true,” Jack admitted, “I suppose, in that case that he happened to see her walking past and seized his opportunity. Not a nice thought, but preferable to the alternative.”
“Very much so.” The policeman glanced at his watch, “Your wife informs me that she is being discharged from hospital today, I will return to the station and get your statement typed up as quickly as possible,
would you like to stop and sign it on your way home, or would you prefer to accompany me and do it now?”
“I’ll stop on the way home I think, it will save time in the long run. But you will keep me informed of any developments I trust?”
“Certainly sir, until later.” The policeman sketched a goodbye and departed, leaving Jack deal with Joey’s demands for answers to her many questions.
There was also one question to which Jack would have liked an answer, to settle one way the other the niggling suspicion in the back of his mind, had Joey, in some manner, contrived to arrange a meeting with Reg Entwhistle?

Hilda Annersley waited in vain for Hilary’s next question, not realising that the girl had merely been seeking one final reassurance that no-one had been killed the previous day. Now that her mind was relieved on that point, she had no wish to talk about the subject any further, indeed she was feeling deeply ashamed of her actions and more than a little foolish. As far as she was concerned, the sooner the matter was forgotten the better it would be for all concerned.
Hilda, of course, had no intention of forgetting about the incident, but she was prepared to allow Hilary more time to return to her normal matter of fact sensible self, rather than risk upsetting her again while her nerves were still clearly on edge.
Accordingly she signalled to the nurse for an aspirin and set about helping Hilary to gather her things ready to remove herself to her own dormitory.
Hilary accepted the proffered tablet from Lesley with an acute sense of embarrassment, unable to meet the nurses eyes. It was, Lesley thought, understandable, but she hoped that it wouldn’t mean that a permanent barrier had arisen between herself and the girl with whom she had built up some kind of rapport, but she could see as well as Miss Annersley that it would be futile to rush into some sort of attempt to gain Hilary’s confidence and dealt with her latest patient with the brisk efficiency with which she would treat any other girl.
Before long Hilary was sitting in her own bed, drinking the hot milk which Elfriede had brought from the kitchens. She took a deep breathe and attempted to drain the cupful in one go, without having to taste too much of the despised drink. She was not entirely successful, and try as she might, she was unable to prevent herself from pulling a face as emptied the cup and handed it back to the maid.
Elfriede grinned cheerfully, she was a very junior maid, and was usually to be found tackling those jobs which her superiors decided were not to their taste, that is, most of the boring backbreaking drudgery which invisibly kept the school bright and clean. It was the first time she had been allowed to see into one of the dormitories, and she could not help but compare the pretty curtained cubicles with her own cramped and dull shared quarters. Seeing this girl being forced to drink something which she clearly did not like helped to redress the balance a little. “Ich hole mehr soll ich?” She asked brightly.
“Nein. kein danke.” Hilary replied quickly.
“No, one cup will be sufficient, thank you.” Hilda dismissed the maid and turned her attention to tucking Hilary into bed, “There now, you settle down for a nap, then, if you feel better when you wake up, you may go outside for a little while, as long as the weather holds.”
“Can I go to the San?”
Hilda looked at her curiously, deciding it would be prudent not to quibble about the girl’s grammar for once, “Why did you want to go to the San, dear?”
“I just thought, maybe I could see Jenny.”
“I don’t think so dear, not today.” Hilda wanted to avoid any possibility of Hilary being upset by her friend’s suffering, the withdrawal process appeared to be more severe and prolonged for Jenny than it had for Mde de Lachennais, Daphne Bettany or Con Maynard, and Hilda had found it distressing to see the child suffering so deeply. “Possibly tomorrow, or the day after, I shall have to talk to the doctors first. Also her parents are with her, they might not wish to have anyone else with them.”
Hilda herself had received a somewhat hostile welcome from Jenny’s parents when she had visited the San the previous night, and although antagonism was, she considered, fully justified as far as she was concerned, she did not want Hilary exposed to the same treatment.
Hilary muttered something which Hilda failed to hear. “What was that, dear?”
“I said, you promised not to lie to me.” Hilary’s eyes reflected her disappointment with her Head Mistress.
“Yes, I did, and I’m keeping my promise, what makes you think I’m lying to you?”
“You’re putting me off, talking about tomorrow, or the day after when you know it’ll probably be too late by then.”
“Too late? Hilary, I promise that I will do my best to let you see Jenny before her parents take her home, but they certainly won’t be taking her back to England before the weekend. Dr Russell and I have a meeting with them on Friday so they certainly won’t be leaving before then, and it may be that they will allow Jenny to come into school to say goodbye to her friends before they go.”
“She’s not dieing?”
“Of course not, wherever did you get that idea from?”
“She seemed so sick when they took her away, and what Cora said….” Hilary was to overcome by the news that her friend would recover to say anymore.
“You poor child, have you been thinking all this time that Jenny was going to die? And your friends too? Didn’t anyone tell you?”
“That’s supposed to be your job.” Hilary didn’t say the words out loud, but she may as well have done. Hilda wavered before the girl’s accusatory glance, realising too late that the attempt to cover up Matey’s misconduct had led to a complete lack of any information being passed to the girls.

I can imagine that she was once told that she was to blame for something (much like Margot was always told off for making Joey ill, or Thekla was told she nearly killed Mrs Linton) and has taken it to heart, and has just happened to have a lot of people die around her. Confused

Joey, who was hearing for the first time about Reg Entwhistle’s drunken antics, bombarded Jack with a positive barrage of questions, interspersed with more than a little criticism of Jack himself for failing to either notice Reg’s decline or to do any thing to help the younger doctor.
Jack had not expected her to take the news well; he strongly suspected that Joey was still harbouring thoughts about Len becoming re-engaged to Reg once she had got over the initial effects of the freedom of university life. That was one illusion had now been well and truly stripped away.
He listened with as much patience as he could muster for several minutes, her ardent defence of Reg doing nothing to dispel the worm of suspicion in his own mind. Eventually though, he had heard enough.
“For heavens sake, Joey, I’m not his baby sitter. Reg is quite old enough to take responsibility for his own actions, now are you going to get dressed? You were eager enough to go home yesterday, I expected you to be ready and waiting, not laying in bed waiting for everyone to dance attendance on you. Perhaps you’d like me to send Anna up to help you dress?”
he delivered them.
“How dare you speak to me like that, as if I were some idle drone. If you spent more time at home you would know how much effort I put into running the household and bringing up our family. You haven’t the foggiest idea how hard I work.”
“I do, however, have a damned good idea of how hard Anna works, and Rosli too. I can’t see that there’s much left for you to do. Maybe that’s why, oh for goodness sake get dressed, I would like to get home some time today.”
“Maybe that’s why what? What were you going to say Jack?”
“Nothing. Just hurry up and get ready, I’ll come back in ten minutes and if you’re not dressed and ready to go I will go home without you.” Had he been any place other than a hospitable he would not have resisted the temptation to slam the door behind him as he walked out.
He stalked along the full length of the corridor until he came to the small window at the end. The window was set fairly high in the wall, but Jack was tall enough to gaze out at the town below him. Somewhere among the heaving mass of people, among the cars and buses, the taxis and cycles, or inside one of the buildings was Reg Entwhistle. But how the hell was anyone going to find him?
He turned away and reached in to his pocket for his cigarettes and the silver lighter which Joey had bought him as a gift for the first birthday he had celebrated as her husband. He continued to hold the lighter long after he had lit his cigarette, remembering how much love they had shared in those days, how close they had been despite being physically separated by the war which had raged throughout the globe. These days they could be touching, yet still be in completely different worlds.

Please Ellie, may we have some more?

#658:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Tue Feb 24, 2004 3:12 am

Yes Vikki, you may, but only a little bit.

It was rather more than ten minutes later when he returned to collect Jo. Having driven down specifically to collect both her and Hilda, he had no intention of returning without her, but neither did he want to give her the opportunity to challenge him to make good his threat.
Joey, who had lingered as long as she dared over getting ready to depart was ready and waiting, she had quite believed him when he had threatened to leave without her, and although she imagined that she could still throw herself upon the Embury’s even at this late date, she felt that she had had enough in the way of adventures to last her some considerable time, besides which, hadn’t Jack told her that she was going back with Jem when he returned home? It had been some months since she had seen Madge, and she wasn’t about to give up the chance to spend time with her sister for anything. “Apart from spending time with Madge, it’ll probably do both me and Jack to have a break from one another,” She mused, “I never thought that I would ever say that, but we don’t seem to be able to talk without squabbling anymore. It used to be fun, we way we used to tease each other, but these days, well it certainly isn’t fun anymore. I just wish I could remember what’s been happening this last two or three days, it might all make more sense then. I wonder what Madge will have to say about my hair?”
When Jack opened the door Joey rose from the chair and walked through the open doorway without a word, leaving her husband to collect her few belongings which she had placed into a plastic bag.
Hilda greeted her enthusiastically, Anna was more restrained, but there was no doubt from the smiles which she bestowed on Joey that she was delighted to have her mistress restored to the family. Joey accepted her words of welcome graciously before the party moved off to the car park to collect Minnie.
“Where’s the car?” Joey was surprised out of her silence.
“I crashed it.”
“You did what?” Joey’s eyes widened, and her vouce correspondingly rose in volume.
“There’s no thing to get excited about, I clipped a tree, that’s all. I wasn’t really in any fit state to be concentrating on driving.”
“So it’s my fault is it?”
“I didn’t say that, Joey, calm down before you upset Hilda.”
Anna, embarrassed by this this public argument, clutched the child she was carrying closer to her, and slowed her pace slightly in an effort to avoid eavesdropping.

Too complex for it's own good, I think. I've just realised that Jem is supposed to be going home on Monday, but he's arranged a meeting with Hilda and Jenny's parents on Friday. Drat!
*Wanders off to work out how to get Jem in two places at one time*

Hilda walked back to the study sure that Hilary would feel happier now that her worst fears had been relived, but only too aware that in neglecting to say any more about Jenny’s condition she had left the rest of her form to ferment in a vat of wild speculation, with Hilary, somehow, in the midst of it.
On refelection, there was good reason to suppose that the upset caused by Jenny’s illness was at the bottom of the trouble in Gypsophilia dormitory that morning, and with hindsight it was incredible that she had completely failed to make the connection.
Nor was it likely that Inter V were the form affected, no doubt Daphne Bettany’s contemporaries were wondering where their small friend had vanished to, and surely the whole school must have noted Mde de Lachenais absence by this time,.
She sighed heavily as she plumped herself down behind her desk and began to tackle the frighteningly large amount of correspondence in her In Tray. Mostly, as she well knew, the letters merely required her signature, she opened her drawer and pulled on the pair of spectacles which she had lately begun to wear when reading, although only in conditions of the strictest privacy.
She signed her name neatly on the bottom of three or four of the letters before alighting upon one which required more in the way of attention.
She began to read carefully, until she was halfway through the second paragraph, when she put the letter down impatiently and pulled off her glasses. “Why should I have to work all through half term damn it.” She thought, “Jem may have said he would get me more support, but I daresay he’s done precious little about it. Well, it’s more than time that he did. It’s all very well for him and Madge to sit there in England leaving me to struggle through alone, no doubt Madge thinks there’s no more to running the school than there was when she was head. I wouldn’t have missed what was going on with Hilary and her chums six months ago, there’s been too much happening in this school that I know nothing about this term, and it’s got to stop.”

*joining with the pro Hilda strike*
It'd give Madge and Jem an almighty shock if she went on strike. She might not be in as much control as normal, but she's still the linchpin of the CS and if she goes on strike it'd be terrible for staff morale- let alone student morale!

Thanks for showing Jack's contemplation of the relationship Ellie. Its useful to know what is going through his mind at the moment.

Poor Hilda.
Patmac, just out of interest, what was it about that post that made you wonder whether Hilda needed more support in coping with losing Nell?

This is great Ellie, looking forward to the next part. Very Happy

Her own comments that she 'would have noticed' and castigating herself for not being so on the spot. Lets face it, it's been quite a term apart from the earthquake and I think the school could have done with more help than they've had from the Board/trustees whatever they are i.e. Madge and Jem Russell! Evil or Very Mad

then, of course Hilda realises she should not be ploughing through the paperwork and I was relieved Smile

She considered paying another visit to the sick room, but decided against. Lesley had told her that their guest had slept peacefully through the night, and appeared to be set to sleep throughout the day too. She had aroused briefly earlier in the morning, just long enough to visit the bathroom and eat some of the breakfast that was offered her before she lost the fight to keep her eyes open. The nurse had assured Hilda that she would let her know as soon as the lady was awake and ready to talk, until then there seemed to be little point in running upstairs every half hour or so.
Most of the remaining staff were currently at the other end of the Platz attending one of the Services, there was little point in using the school’s own chapels for the handful of people remaining on the premises, and only Hilda and Rosalie had opted for the early morning services.
Rosalie herself had taken herself off to visit Grizel Shepherd, a contemporary from the earliest days of the Chalet School and a friend even before that since they had both grown up in the same town. Not for the first time during the term, Hilda found herself feeling somewhat isolated and alone.
As friendly as the Chalet staff were, there was, by virtue of Hilda’s exalted position, a slight barrier between them - it was very rarely that anyone, Hilda included was quite able to forget that she was in a position of authority. Obviously that had not been the case with Nell Wilson, the two women had been of equal stature, but the friendship between had been so deep, and of such long standing that it was doubtful that it would have made a difference even if that had not been the case.
Apart from that, Matey had regarded herself as Hilda’s equal, even her superior in some circumstances and this had allowed for a comfortable relationship between them, but Matey too was gone, in a manner which was equally tragic in it’s own way. Apart from that, there was Joey, but that lady was apparently consumed by her own troubles at the present moment, not too mention the trouble she had caused everyone else.
In short, Hilda had no real idea what to do with her time now she had decided not to work. She stood up and walked through to the outer office, where most of the major newspapers had been delivered, although some of them were the previous days issue.
She picked up the first newspaper and returned to her study to read through it, telling her self it was a luxury to be able to spend time perusing the news in depth rather than following her usual practice of skimming the headlines.
It was towards to back of the paper that her attention was caught by an item which made her firstly raise her eyebrows in surprise, ad then begin to fume quietly with anger.
Full of purpose now, Hilda returned to Rosalie’s domain where she seated herself in front of the typewriter and began the slow and laborious process of typing out a couple of letters.

Thanks, but it was a crap job anyway - the only reason that I stayed so long was because it was me that rang them up asking if they had any vacancies in the first place, but I was really miserable while I was working there.

This bit isn't finished, and won't be finished till tomorrow, but unlike some people, I always post what I've written Very Happy

Typing was not Hilda’s forte, but eventually she had completed her letters to her satisfaction. She pulled the final sheet of paper from the typewriter and folded it neatly before she placed both sheets into two separate envelopes and neatly addressed them. That done, she retrieved her hat and coat and set out for a walk, taking both the envelopes with her, along with the newspaper.
Hilary, who had awoken, feeling much happier watched her progress from the window, abstractedly wondering what had happened to cause the determined set of her headmistresses shoulders. Of one thing she was certain, she was not going to automatically assume that anything bad had happened. “If it has, I expect I’ll find out soon enough, and that will be the time to start worrying,” she told herself, “In the meantime, I’m going to go outside before someone comes and tells me otherwise.”
Hilda strode along at the pace which had left Jem Russell breathless earlier in the week, not in the least affected by the exertion, and it was not long before she arrived at the San, without pausing to make enquiries she headed straight towards Jack Maynard’s office, where, as she expected, Jem was maing himself comfortable behind the desk.

“Hilda, this a surprise, you’ve come to see your girls I suppose,” Jem looked up as she entered the room.
“As a matter of fact, no. It’s you that I want to see.”
“Hmmm, well take a seat, may I offer you something? A snifter maybe, or would you prefer coffee?”
“Nothing thank you, I do not intend staying very long. I just wanted to give you this.” She dropped one of the envelopes on his desk.
“Eh? What’s all this then?” Jem looked at the letter, addressed to himself in Hilda’s neat handwriting.
“If you care to open it, you’ll see it’s a letter of resignation, my resignation.”
“What, now hold on Hilda, you can’t resign. Where on earth did all this come from? Never heard anything so ridiculous, I totally refuse to accept it, good heavens woman, you are the Chalet School.”
“I think you’ll find I can resign Jem, whether you choose to accept it or not. You can’t force me to work for you.”
“But, but, why? You have a real vocation for teaching Hilda, you can’t just walk away from it, just like that? What would you do?” He frowned as a sudden thought hit him, “I say, this is nothing to do with your visitor is it? The woman with Nell’s dairy?”
“No Jem, it has nothing to do with her. The fact is, I may have a vocation for teaching, but not for all the extra administrative duties which I seem to have acquired lately. I had quite enough of that to do as it was, without the extra burden of St Mildred’s. The fact is, I’m hard pressed to find time to fulfil my usual teaching duties, never mind the extra classes which I have had to take on due to the staffing situation. As a result I am no longer able to function effectively as a headmistress. There are things going on in the school which I know nothing about, until too late, and I am no longer able to off er the girls the proper pastoral care. Frankly, Jem, the situation has become intolerable, and I am not going to tolerate it any longer.”
“But, Hilda, please, don’t be too hasty, you’ve been under a bit of strain lately, what with Jo going walkabout and Biddy, admittedly you have been spreading yourself a bit thin, but please reconsider. Apart from all other considerations, these are exceptional circumstances. You would really be letting us down, especially Madge, if you left us in the lurch at the moment.”
“Admittedly events outside of the school have exacerbated the situation, but you and Madge have let me down, Jem. A few days ago you sat in my study and acknowledged yourself that I needed more support, but what have you actually done to provide it?”
“Well, I, I…”
“You’ve done nothing, Jem. It hasn’t been a matter of priority for you has it? Because I can cope, because I always have done, without complaining. Well, that’s all going to change, Jem. I’m no longer prepared to be put upon in this way.”
“But dash it all, Hilda, you might give me a chance, I’ve scarcely had time to even think about it, never mind talk to Madge, it all takes time you know.”
“Really? But as you admit, so far you have done nothing.”
“But…”
“Whereas, on the other hand, you have lost no time in advertising to fill your vacancies here at the San.”
She dropped the newspaper, folded open to display the said advertisement, onto the desk. “All I ask, Jem, is that you show me the same consideration. If you had been half as keen to spend a little time on the school, I would be prepared to stay, but as it is, if you don’t give me your solemn promise to recruit
to recruit at least two more members of staff within the next five days, I shall be posting an exact copy of your letter to Madge and the board of governors. Whether I am forced to do that or not is entirely up to you. Now, I’m sure you understand that I cannot spare you any more of my precious time. Goodbye Jem.”
Hilda arose from her seat and walked out in her most dignified manner.

Thanks for all the huggles - they made me feel much better - huggles back to everyone.

Once she was out of Jem’s sight she allowed herself a slight smile, she knew that her strategy was not entirely without risk, Jem could have accepted her resignation, but she felt secure enough in her position to take that chance. As he had said, in a way, she was the Chalet School. True, it had been Madge Russell’s idea to found the school, an idea born out of necessity, but she had been ready enough to give up her day to day involvement once marriage had provided her with the means to do so, and Mde Le Pattre had unfortunately been forced to give up her role of headmistress after a very short time due to ill health, since that time it had been she, Hilda Annersley, who had taken charge of the school, it was she who had guided it through the difficult conditions of war time, the enforced moves, the return to the continent. It was she who had provided the school with it’s ethos and vision, and she who had developed it into the thriving institution which it had become. Hilda did not suffer from an inflated opinion of her own performance, but she had enough confidence in her own abilities to know her value to the school, indeed, it was her capability which had led to the present situation, she had always coped in the past, why would they expect anything different this time?

Jem sat back guiltily, remembering the air of fragility and vulnerability which he had detected in Hilda when he first arrived in Switzerland. He had promised to take steps to ease her situation, and he had meant to do so, though not as quickly as Hilda evidently expected, and so much had happened since then that he hadn’t yet got around to thinking about the matter any further.
But he had found time to begin to sort out the staffing problems at the San, which were less longstanding, although he hadn’t realised that Phil Graves would be so quick off the mark when it came to advertising the vacant positions. The San was something he knew about though, his interest in the school , and his knowledge of how that institution worked, was more peripheral. Not that that was any excuse.
“That’s something I’ll have to talk to Madge about as soon as I get home tomorrow,” he thought, “Or on Tuesday, not doubt she’ll be too overjoyed to have Joey with her to talk sense to start with. We need to do something quickly though, we can’t afford to lose Hilda, not that she seemed particularly fragile or vulnerable today. It doesn’t leave us much time though, unless one of the younger women at Carnbach fancies the chance of coming over here for a while, it would be worth asking I suppose. Well, there’s nothing I can do about it at this present moment.” He continued to read through the case notes on his desk.

The Maynards journey back to the Platz was mainly uneventful, and far the most part conducted in silence. Anna had settled herself on the back seat with little Hilda, until Joey had joined them with a curt, “Thank you Anna, but I’ll look after her now.”
Anna had handed the child over to her mother’s care, moving to the seat in front where she was well placed to keep an eye on both her charges.
Jack, mindful of his smallest passenger, had resisted the temptation to put his foot down on the accelerator once they had left the town. His business at the police station had been concluded as quickly as he had been promised, but it had still been an inconvenience negotiating the city traffic and finding a parking space large enough for Minnie and his instinct was to speed away from the area as soon as possible.
They had made one break in the jouney, again for child’s sake, but they had at least managed to be civil to one another whilst they sipped milky coffee and availed themselves of the pastries on offer at a small restaurant in one of the villages which they passed through. Once they climbed back into Minnie, though, they fell silent again.
Jack could not help but contrast the solemnity with the excited chatter and singing the last time Minnie had been taken out, on their summer holiday. He glanced at his passengers in the rear view mirror, wondering if Joey felt the same. There was no sign of it in her face, rather, she appeared to be absorbed in her youngest daughter to the exclusion of all else.
As a matter of fact, Joey was thinking furiously behind her calm exterior, but she was not reminiscing about happier times, she was struggling with more recent memories, wishing she could clear her mind of the fog which seemed to envelope it, leaving tantalising hints of hidden knowledge which she just could not see.

thank you Ellie, glad you are better and hope Jem doesn't shelve the problem too long! I feel a bit sorry for Jo at the moment as she and Jack can't really sort themselves out till her membory returns - if it does, of course.

More soon? (please)

Hilda Annersley felt refreshed, both by the walk to the San and back, and by her tussle with Jem, and she re-entered the school in a considerably better frame of mind than she had been when she had left it. She saw the pile of letters still sitting on her desk, and was able to view them with rather less resignation than previously, but even so, work she would not. And if the Russells really thought she was being unreasonable, then they were welcome to try to find someone foolish enough to undertake all her present duties for her present scale of remuneration.
She made herself a coffee and returned to her interrupted perusal of the newspaper for the next twenty minutes. She had become accustomed to hearing various background noises which told her she was no longer in sole possession of the school, save for the invalids and the domestic staff, she was not overly surprised when she was disturbed by a knock on the door, “Hierin,” she replied automatically, and the door opened slowly to reveal the diminutive figure of the staff baby. “Vikki, my dear what can I do for you ?”
Vikki, the junior cookery mistress sidled into the room looking every bit as nervous as an errant schoolgirl, “Miss Annersley,”
“Hilda, please. We are all on first name terms here, as you should know by now.”
“Yes, Miss, er Hilda, thank you.” Vikki took a deep breath and jumped in with her request, “I was telling some of the others, on the way back, about all the cakes and pastries I made at a get together that I went to earlier this year, and some, I mean, it was suggested that I might commandeer the dommy sci room and make some for us, for tea, I mean Kaffee and Kunchen, but I thought I ought to ask you first, I’ll pay for all the ingredients I use of course, and you’re very welcome to come and sample the results.”
“That sounds an excellent idea, and I accept your invitation with pleasure, Vikki, but please don’t think any more about paying for anything out of your own pocket, especially since the rest of us staff are going to benefit by your hard work.” Hilda replied, adding silently to herself, “It’s not as if Jem Russell can’t afford to pay for a few bags of flour and some eggs.”
“Thank you Miss Annersley,” Vikki smiled and left the study, feeling, as she always did on such occasions, that she should have followed the girls example in performing the regulation curtsey.

Well, she'll soon learn if the CS are used toKaren's cooking, and Vikki's isn't up to that standard.

Good evening Ellie1 I can see you're out there. Is there any chance of more Tensions tonight *hopeful smiley*, or should I tuck myself up in bed with my teddy bear right now? Sad

Nicci - glad to see you, I tried to reply to your pm but the stupid board wouldn't let me - can you send me your e mail address please, then I'll be glad to send it to you.
If there is any more Tensions tonight, it probably won't be till way past the time all good CS girls should be in the land of zzzzzz, I should opt for the teddy.

The afternoon passed, Hilda did get the opportunity to speak, briefly, with the mysterious guest, and as she had surmised, she found that that lady had indeed made the trip to the Gornetz Platz to return Bill’s final possessions.
It seemed that she had had a difficult time on her travels, but Hilda mainly understood this from what was left unsaid, rather than what the women told her.
The guest had introduced herself, to Hilda’s surprise, as Emile Rouen. “The nun?” Hilda gasped.
“I was, yes.” On this subject, the lady was even more reticent than she had been on the topic of her journey.
She did, however, become relatively voluble on the subject of Bill, “She was a brave lady, one of the other victims, a waiter, described her actions, she had escaped the worst shock, you know, but she went back into the building because on of her pupils was missing, but maybe she did not know the danger of the aftershocks as we natives knew.”
“She was a geography teacher.” Hilda interjected softly.
“Then she was more brave than I knew. If she had not returned to the building,” The nun shook her head sadly.
“She couldn’t have done otherwise.” Hilda said sadly, “Not without betraying who she was.”
“The girl was dead when they were pulled from the rubble, thewonder is that your friend survived as long as she did. “
“I think,” Hilda said slowly, thinking back to those bleak days, “That she survived because she had a purpose to do so, one final act to perform.”
“The letter.”
“Yes.”
They sat in silence for a while, as each of them quietly contemplated the circumstances which had led the nun to the Chalet School.
Hilda noticed that the patients eyes had closed, and her regular breathing signalled that she had once again drifted off to sleep. Regretfully, Hilda stood up and moved away from the bed.
“How is she?” She murmured to the nurse as she walked across the room.
“Fairly well, all things considered. She appears to be malnourished, and her journey has evidently taken it’s toll, but it’s nothing that time won’t heal. Time and rest.”
“And she’ll have as much of both as she needs.” Hilda responded.
The nurse nodded, “How is Hilary Francis?”
“Slightly happier, I think, for the moment anyway. I left her sleeping, but I told her that she may get up if she wanted, and go outside for some fresh air.”
“Do you think that was wise?”
“Why? Don’t you?” Hilda looked at the nurse in alarm, wondering if anything had been said the previous day to give Lesley cause to think that way.
Nurse Green wavered slightly at Miss Annersley’s piercing glance, “No, not really, except she isn’t very happy at school at the moment, and her mother is on the continent isn’t she? In Germany, I thought maybe she might think she could get home.”
“No. I don’t think so, Hilary doesn’t strike me as the sort of girl who would run away, and I think that things will settle down now. The poor child was under the impression that her friend was dieing in the San, in fact, as far as I can make out, the whole of that crowd seem to think the same. I shall talk to them the moment they return, and hopefully that will mean an end to all the upsets in Inter V.”
Hilda indicated that the talk was over and left the sick room quickly, before the nurse had time to consider why the girls hadn’t been reassured about Jenny.
