That was great, Lesley! It's so in keeping with the way you've drawn both of them! I thought she was crying as well - so glad she wasn't though! Very Happy

Six o'clock in the morning? On a freezing cold surfboard? That's inhuman!! Much as I love Bill, somehow I think the payback has just begun.

LOL!! Laughing Laughing

I just knew it was a wind-up! Those eyes were just too grave and serious and I was convinced the shaking shoulders were giggles!!

Poor Nell - she did deserve it but I'm disappointed that she didn't clock what Hilda was up to earlier!

Full marks to Hilda for dramatic improvisation - she's certainly learnt a thing or two in the real world!! Very Happy

*lol* Sensational stuff, Lesley! Good for Hilda, getting her revenge like that! She's very good at getting what she wants from Nell!

#1012:  Author: NicciLocation: UK PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2004 9:12 pm

Thanks Lesley, that was great. I must admit that when Hilda first called Nell into the office, I was quite worried that she was seriously quite angry with her this time, so the remark about Nell being disloyal really shot home as far as I was concerned. I'm glad Hilda didn't actually take it so seriously though.

I guess thats everything I had to say, except more please!!

Unfortunately reports didn't all get done as my office at work decided not to have any heating! Next bit!

The two friends smiled at each other and went back to the desk and sat down.

“I’ve got to ask, Hilda,” Miss Wilson began, “Why, after insisting on that article being published, did you then agree to go surfing?”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Because it was obvious that it meant a lot to the girls,” she said softly, “There are not many who would willingly place themselves in opposition to me, Nell. Especially as they were even prepared to threaten me!”

“So you intended to back down about the surfing anyway? But couldn’t allow any of us to think you’d been coerced.” Nell Wilson smiled, “You’re a very complicated person, Hilda!”

The following morning, as the grey skies of dawn appeared, the Head opened the door of their cottage just before six am. The three Prefects were waiting outside and smiled as she appeared,

“Morning Miss Annersley,” Alison said brightly, “We’ve been down to the beach, the waves are looking good!”

Miss Annersley smiled faintly, “You’ve no idea how happy that makes me, Alison,” she said dryly, her normally pale face seeming even paler in the half light. All three girls grinned. Miss Annersley invited the girls in and they had a quick coffee before walking down to the beach, Miss Wilson joined them.

“I didn’t think you’d be able to come surfing, Miss Wilson,” Carol said.

Miss Wilson smiled, “I can’t Carol, not until my hand has healed. I’m just here to watch, and to lend the Head moral support!”

“And because the Head didn’t see why she should be the only one up this early!” Miss Annersley put in softly.

On the beach everyone except Miss Wilson pulled on a wet suit before walking toward the water. Four boards were stuck upright in the sand near the water’s edge. Louise, the acknowledged master at surfing, was attempting to give the Head some instruction as they walked into the water. Even from twenty feet away, Miss Wilson was able to see her friend was shivering! The four slowly paddled out into some of the smaller waves, thinking it was better if the Head tried with smaller ones to start with, at the next largish swell all four started paddling furiously.

Miss Wilson watched intently as first Alison, then Louise caught the wave and swiftly stood up on their boards, as the wave reached Carol and the Head they both seemed to be riding it. Carol stood up on her board, balancing with consummate ease, Miss Annersley stood on her board and promptly fell off again, head butting the wave as she did so! The three girls rode in on the surf but Miss Wilson was watching for her friend, she surfaced behind the wave and swam determinedly over to where her board was floating merrily.

For the next 20-30 minutes the cycle was repeated, the girls would paddle out with the Head to some likely waves and wait with her until they could all catch one wave, then, while the girls would stand on their boards and surf in, Miss Annersley would swiftly overbalance and fall back into the sea. Sometimes she would be able to retrieve her board easily, other times though it had been swept in to the shore and the Head would have to swim back in fetch it. By the end of 30 minutes it was obvious she was tiring and, as she swam in to retrieve her board, Miss Wilson waded out to her,

“Hilda, you’ve had enough now, come in,” she said softly, careful to keep her right arm up out of the water, she pulled her friend upright with her left. Miss Annersley didn’t argue, she was obviously tired and cold.

“Nell, is the thrill of the ride worth all of this?” she asked quietly, “Only I’m not sure if I can face this for another nine days!”

Miss Wilson nodded, “It’s worth it, Hilda,” she said intently, “If you could just experience it once you’d have no doubts!”

“Perhaps I can help there!” another voice, masculine, intervened. Both women looked across to see Shane Coates standing on the beach, he was dressed for surfing and had a board under one arm. He smiled rather shyly at both women, “Miss Annersley, if you could experience what it felt like to ride a wave, I guarantee it would inspire you!”

The Head smiled slightly, “Unfortunately it doesn’t look as though that’s going to happen any time soon, Shane,”

“It will if you come out with me, ma’am,” Shane blushed slightly, “I’ll carry you on my board, all you’ll need to do is just stand completely still.”

A few minutes later Miss Wilson watched as her friend and the young security guard swam out, past the smaller waves being surfed by the girls to the far larger breakers further out. She saw the Head moving to sit on Shane Coates’ board in front of the man himself. As the next breaker appeared Shane paddled furiously for the top and caught the wave. He swiftly stood up on the board then quickly reached down to lift Miss Annersley to her feet. With his arm around her waist he guided the board and his passenger across the crest of the wave and down the face. The run continued for some time with the board reaching all the way into the shallows before the wave’s power dissipated. As it did, Shane stepped off of the board, lifting the Head with him.

“Well, was I right?” He asked diffidently.

Miss Annersley gave him a broad grin, “definitely,” she said with passion, “Now I know the experience, I’ll keep going!”

How weird - the clock has obviously been fixed and it's placed this post before some others that were made earlier but when clock was an hour ahead!!

Apologies for the wait - thanks for those who have PM'd me with their surname - anyone who hasn't and wants to be in RCS please let me know!

Conversations in the Staff Room,

“Have the Heads discovered any more about who sent that smoke bomb?” Nancy Wilmot asked Ruth Derwent, it was early evening and most of the School had free time. While the Juniors and Kindergarten had some supervision, Middles and Seniors were allowed a certain freedom from restriction, hence the Staff Room, as always, was quite full.

The Senior Mistress looked across, “Hilda told us today during the Senior Management briefing, she said we could pass the information on to our Staff,” she said gravely, “the Police have got back those forensic reports, the ones sent by Connor’s boss? It wasn’t a smoke bomb that malfunctioned, it was the real thing! Something called a pipe bomb, I think he said!”

“My God!” Janet McRae, sat next to her boss, exclaimed, “then it was deliberate?”

Ruth nodded, “Apparently the police are trying to trace whoever this Rachel is - she’s wanted for attempted murder!”

“It’s no good, however I try and work it, getting more than 4 per team just will not work, that means that, for each game there’s a maximum of 24 people. We’ve got between 150 and 200 girls plus 20 or 30 Staff.” KB announced.

“I thought Staff numbers would be lower,” Kathryn said, surprised,

“Not when we include the House Staff as well,” KB said glumly.

“You’ll have to make it a proper tournament then,” Catherine Laidler put in, “have up to ten games going at a time, work out some way of eventually ending up with 6 winners all playing each other.”

“It wouldn’t be boring for those out of the competition would it?” Kathryn asked.

“Not if all the audience were divided up to cheer on each colour,” Donna said with a grin.

“Good idea, Donna!” Catherine returned, “And we could always have our own competition in the Staff Room later!”

At the first sound of the phone, Pat picked up the receiver, “Hello, Real Chalet School, Teachers’ lounge,”

“Hi, Pat, were you sitting on the phone?”

Pat laughed, “Hello Esmer.. Sorry Ellie, no I just knew you’d be ringing so I could answer it quickly! Well, are you going to be joining us for half term?”

“Yes, both Vikki and I have the weekend off and will be along - you’re sure it’s OK with the Heads?”

“Yes, no problem, Nell said you could stay the entire weekend - ‘the more the merrier’- were her exact words!”

“Good.” Ellie paused then, “Pat have you heard anymore about the cause of the explosion?”

“Not much, why?”

“Well some of the local police are members of the Fitness club, they’ve been saying that they are seriously looking for this Rachel.”

“Yes, it’s rather worrying.”

"Especially as one of the places they are looking is the School!"

#1057:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Fri Feb 27, 2004 9:28 pm

Rachel the witch would be too obvious.but that could be a double bluff...Hmm I think I would say Ray or Rachael...but that is a gut thing and I couldn't justify it. It's not to do with themas such, just thinking who Lesley would be more likely to pick.

Later that week the Head was visited by the local Police Chief, she called in both Nell Wilson and John Coates for the meeting.

“Well, just to bring you up to date on events,” the Police Chief, Chris Taylor, began, “We’ve had some more information on the incendiary device used, it’s rather unusual.”

“How unusual, Chris?” John Coates was an old friend of the policeman.

“Two main things, firstly, although definitely designed with a large enough amount of explosive to cause serious injury, even to kill, it was not made even more lethal by additional items added to the mix.”

“Additional items?” Both the Head and Deputy Head looked bemused.

“Nails, specifically 6 inch nails and screws, their only reason for being there would be to seriously maim or kill.”

Both women went white at this information, “People would add nails to raise the chance of killing someone?” Miss Wilson sounded faintly sick at this, her partner nodded her agreement.

Both men looked across slightly surprised that two English women should be so surprised at this information. John Coates spoke first,

“Unfortunately Nell, both of you, there are any number of sick people out there. I’m sure you can appreciate it from your own country’s problem with terrorism, quite apart from the more recent world wide events.”

Miss Annersley schooled her features back into their normal impassive mask, signalling her partner to do the same. Neither woman was fully aware of exactly what events John was alluding to - however they had no intention of letting him know that! “I think we were both surprised to find it here John.” she said quietly.

“But that’s just it,” he replied, “It isn’t here, the bomb didn’t have anything added, and that suggests something rather strange.”

Chris Taylor continued, “Precisely,” he said, “It suggests that the bomb had two purposes, firstly to kill Kelly Stevens - and she would most definitely have died had it not been for you, Miss Wilson, but secondly to smear both yourself and the School!”

“Had Kelly Stevens not survived, and that b*stard Connor not been quite so keen to implicate Nell, then she would currently be facing manslaughter charges and the School may well have been ruined!”

Miss Annersley sat back, a troubled look upon her face, “Then Sue Williams was correct, this School does have an enemy? It appears though that Mr Connor had only a very small part in this, has he said anymore about his employer?”

Chris Taylor shook his head, “He’s said nothing, we are going to find it very difficult getting information from him. There was a second point on the forensic report about the bomb though. Obviously it was home made, and, due to the intense security on board all aircraft nowadays, it is unlikely that whoever sent it to the girl Kelly did so from out of the country.”

The two women and John nodded agreement, Chris Taylor continued, “Well, although most of the components were easily obtained here in Australia, there were a few that can only be bought in England. They are not the type of things that could be obtained via any mail order, or via the Net, so whoever made this has to now be in Australia, but has been in England in the last six months or so!”

Phone conversations.....

“Hi Rachael, I got your message, what’s up?” Lesley Green, sat in her room in the Staff Block, spoke on her mobile.

“Hello Lesley,” Rachael Pelter’s voice sounded quite worried, “Look, I’ve been thinking it through, I don’t know if it’s such a good idea me coming to the School for half term.”

“But why, I though it was all arranged - I’ve even got you down for the surfing, I’m in it too but as the last time I went surfing was almost 20 years ago I thought that at least you’d be an asset to any team.”

“Yes , I know I said I’d come but…” Rachael paused, “look, Lesley, what’s the latest on this woman who sent the bomb to Kelly Stevens?”

“Nothing more since Hilda briefed all of us day before yesterday….is that what this is all about Rachael?”

“Well it seems a bit awkward at the mom…”

“Rachael! You’re not feeling awkward because this nutter has the same name as you are you?” Lesley’s voice was disbelieving, “Good grief there must be millions with the same name - it’s not that unusual a name!”

“No, but it’s not just the name is it?” Rachael returned, “It’s someone that was in England but is now in Australia…”

“Which probably cuts it down to hundreds of thousands,”

“Yes, but it’s also got to be someone with fairly close ties to the Real Chalet School.” Rachael insisted, “Otherwise how did Connor discover that Hilda and Nell were having the prefects over that time?”

“It doesn’t matter, Rachael,” Lesley was adamant, “I know it wasn’t you, Hilda and Nell know, everyone knows. You’ve got to come, if you don’t that’ll look as though you’ve got something to hide.”

“Well…”

“Rachael, we need you, we’re both on Hilda’s team for the surfing - she still manages to head butt the waves three times out of four and I’m not much better - we need your skill! I promise you no one thinks it could be you!”

“Oh OK then! Can’t let the Head down!”

“Real Chalet School Nursery, Mrs Phillips speaking,”

“Hello Carolyn, can you talk?”

Carolyn Phillips glanced around, her eight charges were all having their afternoon nap and she had a few minutes. “Rachel, good to hear from you, how’s things?”

“Oh, not so bad,” Rachel replied, “I’m still kept pretty busy flying all over the world keeping tabs on our adoptees and their families, especially as Mollie has now taken on the role of Bursar. Still, Joey and I get along quite well now!”

“Yes, surprising that!” Carolyn smiled, remembering the initial strained meetings when Joey Maynard had first read Rachel’s epic Change for Con. She was so absorbed in the memory that she missed the beginning of her next sentence.

“…so I’m sure you’ll understand that it’s probably not a good idea if I come over to the Real CS this half term.”

“What! Rachel you can’t!” Carolyn sounded quite horror struck, “The kids are so looking forward to seeing you! They say you tell the best stories ever!”

“Yes, but what about the Police investigation? Suppose something were to happen while I was there? I mean I’m already suspect because I’ve got the name Rachel!”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Carolyn sounded quite cross, “as if anyone would suspect you, it’s only in your stories that you’re bloodthirsty! In real life you're nothing like that!”

"Well, if you're sure I'll be welcome?"

"Welcome? I'm relying on you! You're the only one that can get this lot off to sleep when they're excited!"

Oh, now who woke me up?

The next few days leading up to Half Term passed relatively smoothly, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson continued to visit Kelly Stevens in hospital and, once she was out of Intensive Care, would take along some of her friends from Upper IVa. She was healing well although occasionally inclined toward tears, especially when she heard of all the fun she was going to miss at the half term holiday. Her friends cheered her up by promising to take lots of photographs and to fill her in on all the exploits at the end of the weekend.

The last full day of term, the Friday, was rather a disjointed one, although there were some lessons scheduled in the morning, Miss Annersley was merciful and informed everyone at Assembly that day that the lessons were cancelled. It is on record that more than half the mistresses looked just as relieved as the pupils! Instead everyone was enlisted to help get those Guides and Brownies packed and ready for when transport arrived just after lunch, and also those girls who were going home for the holiday - most of whom actually looked rather glum at missing out on the fun!

That evening the total number of people in the large Dining Hall numbered less than one third the norm and the room appeared far too big!

Miss Annersley, seated at the head of a much reduced number of Staff, looked around and laughed, “We’ll be starting to echo in here soon.” she remarked to Miss Wilson.

Her partner looked around thoughtfully, “I see what you mean, Hilda, it also looks far too formal for a holiday, shall we change the layout for the weekend?”

“Good idea, Nell, we should at least try to show we are human!”

That evening the Kindergarten went off to bed immediately and the Juniors decided to go with them, the rest of the Staff were surprised until Kathie Robertson told them that Rachel MacDonald had promised them a few stories! Apparently her stories were now legendary and the Juniors were prepared for an early bed if it meant that they could hear them!

“Have you heard her stories, Nell?” The Head was intrigued,

“Well only partially,” Miss Wilson confessed, “I went along once to hear them but only heard a little before Rachel became aware that I was there. She was very apologetic but said that she couldn’t continue while I was listening!”

“How strange!”

“Yes, although, from the little I did hear, I can understand her reticence, I don’t think her yarns are very respectful!”

“I can believe that,” her friend replied, “I’ve read some of her drabbles on the board!”

The remainder of the School consisted of the Middles and Seniors who had not joined the Brownie and Guide camps, in addition a certain number of the Adult branch had remained and there were the guests invited by members of Staff. Out of the Staff, a number had joined Xanthe and Chloë taking their charges camping and a certain number had the weekend off. Some of those had remained anyway - to join in the fun!

That evening there was a choice of activities, the two big lecture halls were converted into cinemas for the night and a choice of recent releases were shown. In addition, in the computer room, Miss Trench had set up a number of the PC’s with Internet facilities and up to twenty people at a time could take part in on-line computer gaming. While in the large gymnasium, all the games equipment had been stacked away and a number of large boxes, cabinets and steps placed randomly throughout the building - on both floors. This was all in preparation for a game of Lazer Wars - played in teams of ten or twelve, the girls, and mistresses could suit up and, carrying a fully functioning lazer rifle, make war!

It was very late before the Staff of the Real Chalet School finally got to bed, especially as, once all their charges had finally retired after eleven, and the Housemistresses had them all settled, some evil genius made someone in the Staff Room suggest that they might like to try out the Lazer Wars themselves!

#1097:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Sun Feb 29, 2004 1:02 am

A very tiny extra - to keep you wanting more!

It was almost one am before the Heads finally made their way over to their cottage. Unusually for them they were not walking together, Miss Annersley was walking on ahead - affronted dignity in her every step, while Miss Wilson strolled behind her friend, giggling every so often.

When they reached the cottage they entered in silence, swiftly walking around the downstairs windows to draw all the curtains.

"Would you like a coffee, Hilda?" Miss Wilson had recovered from the giggles.

The Head looked over, still obviously annoyed at something, she nodded abruptly. Miss Wilson didn't take offence, instead bent herself to completing her task. Once the coffee was made she passed a mug across to her friend, "Er, Hilda?"

"What is it?" Miss Annersley mumbled the words,

"Would you like an ice pack, for your jaw I mean?"

Next bit!

The following morning dawned clear and bright, the weather forecast promised it would remain the same for most of the day, only turning to rain by late evening. It was therefore decided that the surfing competition would take place. The Prefects had been mainly responsible for the organisation of this competition, they had decided that people would participate in teams and had, over the last week or so, been gathering up names of those wanting to take part. There were six teams, each with 8 or 9 people, and the organisers had been very fair in allocating both expert surfers and beginners to each team.

Miss Long, with the help of two of the Mathematics Staff, Miss Gray and Mrs McRae, had arranged a system of odds for each participant, including handicaps, projected number of waves caught, and chances of ‘wipe-out’. Those girls and Staff not taking part in the surfing could instead register to play a competition betting on the races. They would each start with the same number of tokens and could place bets on any girl or member of Staff who was surfing. The one who won the most tokens by the end of the competition, would win a prize.

Miss Annersley was part of a team that also included Lesley Green and Rachael Pelter, it also had Louise Chad and a couple of the other Prefects, as well as some of the Fifth formers. During a quick meeting prior to the start of the competition, Louise had encouraged everyone, unusually, the Head had not said very much, possibly though this was due to the large, vivid purple bruise across the left side of her jaw! None of the girls had any idea exactly how Miss Annersley had sustained such an injury, and no one liked to ask as she was obviously somewhat angry about it! To have the Head exhibiting anything other than calm was a novelty, but no one wanted to upset her further!

“Nell,” Madge had only just arrived that morning, “How did Hilda hurt herself?” She kept her voice down low.

“Well, she didn’t exactly do it to herself, Madge,” Nell Wilson began, she saw the Head watching her and gulped, “I’ll tell you later!” she whispered in an aside to Madge Russell, before turning and smiling sweetly to her friend.

The competition went rather well, it is true that a number of novice surfers managed to fall off before even catching one wave, and their score was zero! However they were quickly pulled back in by a couple of the security guards, doubling as life guards and riding jet skis for the purpose!

Miss Annersley had managed to catch four waves before failing, the same number as Miss Green, they were the first of their team to fail, but were not disheartened, as they both waded out of the water they were happy and Miss Annersley was even smiling - for the first time that day!

Two of their team went on to win the individual competition - the HR Manager and the Second Prefect together managing to each surf in on 19 waves. They may have been able to do more, however the weather had begun to change and the wind increase. The water was therefore rather choppy and considered dangerous. The change in the behaviour of the waves was rather a surprise for everyone and occurred very quickly and without much warning. Especially as, those not watching the surfing had had the opportunity to try water-skiing further along the beach, plus a number of the Kindergarten and Juniors had been taken swimming. It was therefore a rather tense time for everyone while heads were counted and numbers correlated to check if anyone was missing.

Happily all personnel were accounted for, and the security guards could be recalled from the water, which was starting to become very wild! The School waited while Miss Long and her two helpers worked out exactly who had managed to win the most tokens, it was a tie between Amy and Laura, both CBBers and now pupils in the Third and Sixth forms respectively. They each won gift vouchers for a well known book store. The team that had won the surfing competition was the one captained by Carol Leigh, although none of her team had managed to surf 19 times, all of them had stayed surfing for on average 13 waves, this was a better overall average than Louise’s team, they won cinema tickets as did Louise and Rachael.

As the weather was starting to deteriorate, Miss Annersley ordered that everyone should move back indoors and congregate in the big Hall. Those who had been swimming or surfing disappeared to change and it was lunchtime before everyone had moved back to the main School building. The catering staff had laid on a meal with a Mexican theme to it and everyone enjoyed sampling Chilli Con Carne and rice, nachos, enchiladas and the like. Even better, from the School’s perspective, was that, on her return from her cottage, where she had gone for a quick shower, Miss Annersley had returned with a smile! It was so unusual for the Head to be in a bad mood that it had cast a slight pall over the holiday!

Miss Wilson greeted her friend as she returned to the Hall, “Have you forgiven me yet, Hilda?” Her voice very subdued and her face woebegone.

The Head glanced across, sceptically, at this appearance of contrition from her partner, “Nell,” she said quietly, “this act of yours would be so much more convincing, if I were not aware that you laughed until you were nearly sick last night!”

“Well it was funny, last night!” Miss Wilson began, “Admit it, Hilda, if it had happened to anyone else you have laughed too. And you didn’t see your face when it happened - I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look quite so offended.” The Deputy Head bit her lip to stop herself from smiling again, “It wouldn’t have been anything like as funny if you’d not acted as though it were a personal insult!”

At this point Madge Russell, Joey Maynard and Con Mackenzie appeared, looking around, Madge saw there was no one else nearby, she spoke, “Hilda, I appreciate you may not want any of the girls to know what happened, but none of them are nearby, won’t you please tell us how you hurt your jaw?”

Miss Annersley looked at her friends in some exasperation, “I’ll not get any peace until I do, will I?” She asked plaintively.

“None,” Joey replied firmly, “Come on, let’s go through to your Study, if you’d really rather the girls not know,”

The five women helped themselves to the Mexican feast and, with full plates, walked over to the Admin Block. Settling themselves around the Head’s table they started eating, waiting expectantly for the Head to explain.

Hope you like it! Laughing

The night before…..

“Well that’s the last of them settled! I did wonder if we‘d have problems as there‘s a nice thunderstorm brewing!” Jennie breathed a sigh of relief as she entered the Staff Room and joined one of the far tables, also sat round the table were the Heads themselves, and a number of others.

“No trouble, Jennie?” this from Nell Wilson.

“I don’t think so, Nell,” the Senior Housemistress laughed, “Most of them were shattered! Especially those playing Lazer Wars!”

“I should think so, too, seeing exactly what they have to do in there!” This from Lulie Walker,

“I didn’t get a chance to see it all set up,” Cathy Bulfin, newly arrived to take on a post in the Nursery, put in, “exactly what does it entail?”

“It’s a type of War Games, with laser rifles,” Kathie Ferrars explained. “The lasers are very weak and you wear equipment that can recognise if one has hit you, you also wear goggles to protect your eyes and uniforms, helmets and boots.”

“You’re divided into two teams and just fight it out!” Lisa grinned around at the others, “And it really looked like fun when the girls were playing! There’s an observation post at the top and you can watch everything!”

“Yes, I must admit I wished that we could have a game as well!” Kathie said, then stopped, the same idea striking her and all the other mistresses sat around the table. With one accord they all turned to the one person on the table who had not, yet, said anything.

Miss Annersley smiled, “I have no objection,” she said, smiling, “ the gym is far enough away that it will not disturb anyone if you play the game.”

“Would you join in, Hilda?” Lisa asked the question on everyone’s lips!

Miss Annersley shook her head, “Not this time,” she said, she looked around laughing at the long faces, “You have me surfing, tomorrow, people, be satisfied!”

“I’ll not take part either,” Jennie put in, “But I wouldn’t mind watching, Hilda will you join me in the observation post?”

The Head nodded, she turned to her partner, “What about you, Nell?”

Miss Wilson grinned, “if I can operate the rifle with this duff hand,” she held up her right arm, still wearing the plaster back slab, “then I’ll join in! It‘ll be fun!”

“Well that doesn’t sound like a problem so far, Hilda,” Joey put in, “If anything I’d have thought that Nell was the one most likely to injure herself, not you!”

“Yes, you would have thought that,” Miss Annersley glanced across at her partner meaningfully.

After asking around in the Staff Room, Kathie Ferrars easily found 20 Staff willing to play the game, they all wandered over to the Gym and started to change into the uniforms. Kathie and Lisa issued the equipment and divided them into two teams. Inside the Gym, all the windows had been covered and the lighting was low and red - to simulate a war zone. There was an extremely loud sound track playing on a battery operated turntable. It was pounding out the latest chart hits, and spotlights lit up different areas in random patterns. The uniforms included small radio headsets and microphones to enable all team members to keep in touch. Lisa was pleased to be able to switch her hearing aid to receive the signal.

From above Hilda and Jennie watched as, in the semi darkness, the Game began!

They had played for perhaps 20-30 minutes when the Head’s mobile rang, she went outside the Gym to answer it. On her return she spoke seriously to Jennie,

“That was the Gatehouse, the storm outside has appeared in earnest and they think it may cause problems to the electrical supply,” Miss Annersley relayed, “They advise that we may lose power for a short periods in the near future,”

“Are you going to stop this?”

“No, but we’ll have to let everyone know that they could lose power,” the Head spoke into the intercom connecting her to all the Lazer War players. They continued watching for some time when another, more serious, call came on the mobile. On her return this time Miss Annersley looked slightly concerned, “we’ll have to stop the game now Jennie,” she said, “Security have spotted an intruder!”

She spoke on the intercom immediately, informing everyone that the game was being stopped and why. At the same time the Senior Housemistress started to flick the switches that would change the lighting back to normal and open the blinds up at the windows, at that moment all power was lost! In the observation area there were a couple of torches and Jennie switched one on.

“Damn,” the word from Miss Annersley was unexpected and Jennie looked across in surprise, “I’m not sure how much of the message got through,” Hilda explained, “And they’ll be in almost total darkness down there!” She picked up the second torch, “We’ll need to go down and lead them out!”

Down in the Gym itself the players were almost totally disorientated, in complete darkness, the radios dead, but with the sound track still blaring out. In addition, most of the women had been running around and were very hot, especially with the uniform, helmet and goggles. Nell Wilson had discarded her rifle at the first hint of trouble and was attempting to reach the doors. On the radio she had only heard that there was an intruder then her friend’s voice had cut out; she was very worried. Thoughts of the School having an enemy kept reverberating through her head and she started quite violently on suddenly coming across someone else,

“Who’s that?” she demanded, grabbing the person tightly.

“Rachel,” a voice answered, a slight tremor in her voice, “Rachel Dorling, is that you Miss Wilson?”

Nell recognised the Junior Mistress’ voice, “Yes, it’s me,” she replied with no thought of grammar! “Did you hear the Head mention an intruder?”

“Yes, you don’t think this blackout has anything to do with it, do you?”

“I hope not!” Nell replied grimly. “Can you remember which way to the door?”

“This way I think.” Rachel moved in one direction and was almost immediately swallowed up by the darkness, Nell Wilson tried to follow her. Suddenly, from the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a tall figure, there was a very small amount of light, just enough to show someone was there. At the same time this figure placed their hand on Nell’s shoulder. Thinking it was the intruder she reacted swiftly, turning almost in one fluid movement she lifted her arm and drove her elbow into the man’s jaw. He fell to the floor.

At that moment all the lights flashed on and everything could be seen clearly - including the fact that the intruder so ably attacked by Miss Wilson……… was Miss Annersley!

Hee hee.

Thanks Lesley, wonder about the intruder, but as everything seemed OK the next day presume it was, or seemed at that time to be a false alarm.

Now, what was Hilda smiling at when she came to the dining hall. Has she been planning some kind of revenge by any chance?

I must admit I thought it was a collision in lazer wars - which by the way is great, though I've only played it once!

I'll bet Hilda gets her revenge. WAS there an intruder?

I'm really not sure if the T switch would work that way, Lesley, but as I'm not sure let's say your equipment has been fitted with a telecoil! Also (I'll regret telling you folk this, i know..) one thing that will make me panic very qucikly is being plunged into darkness- even tho I can still hear through my hearing aids, I wouldn't have been able to make out Hilda, for instance, and in the noise and confusion would get thoroughly lost and disorientated.

Next bit - may get some more tonight but no promises!

At this pronouncement the Head finished speaking and looked around the table, with the exception of Miss Wilson none of her friends could meet her eye. In fact they all seemed to be finding something requiring all their concentration far off in the distance. She sighed, “All of you find that as funny as Nell did, don’t you?” She said resignedly.

Madge Russell looked across at her friend, she schooled her face into a grave expression, “Of course not, Hilda, I can see it would have been a terrible experience for you, it’s just…” she bit her lip and quickly turned away.

Joey Maynard tried next, “Hilda, were you knocked out? Can you remember all that happened to you?”

Miss Annersley looked over suspiciously, Joey’s black eyes appeared to be brimming with tears. “I remained conscious, thank you Joey,” she replied quickly, “and, am able to remember what happened. While Nell’s blow was quite possibly the hardest I have ever been hit, it appears that I have a very strong jaw. I will admit I was rather stunned!”

As the lights came on, Miss Wilson saw her friend on the floor, clutching her jaw,

“Hilda! What on Earth are you doing there?” The question was out before Miss Wilson even thought about it, on considering later she did admit to herself that it was probably the most ridiculous thing she could have said!

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend, “Miss Wilson, I believe I’m here because you just hit me!” The words were said in her coldest manner and most incisive tone, they were perhaps spoilt because, due to Miss Annersley keeping her jaw as still as possible, the words actually appeared slurred and half formed.

It was probably not a good thing that, at that precise moment, one of the newer security guards appeared, he had not yet met the Head and, faced with a woman sprawled on the floor, clutching her mouth and slurring her words, remarked cheerfully, “Oh dear, had too many bevies has she? If you like I’ll give you a hand getting her to bed, love,” this to Miss Wilson, “wouldn’t want that Head Teacher of yours to find out, would we? From what I hear she’s a real martinet!”

I'm in! The board's back! I'll post the few bits I have already posted on the other, temporary board and then get writing!! Laughing

There was a deathly silence as everyone within the Gym heard these words, with almost one accord all the Staff turned to look at Miss Annersley. The one exception to that was Miss Wilson herself, swallowing slightly she spoke to the security guard, “Ah, that won’t be necessary,” she said swiftly, even to herself her voice sounding high and squeaky, “ things are not quite as they appear.”

The man shrugged, “As you please, Mr Lucas, he’s in charge of the night shift, sent me with a message, as the electrical storm seems to have wrecked mobile communication. I’m Tom Brookes, by the way, are you in charge, Miss?” He looked hopefully toward Miss Wilson.

“Er, well, not quite…” Miss Wilson began before she was interrupted.

“She is not, I am,” Miss Annersley had regained her feet and now stood just behind the Deputy Head, although obviously injured, she was no longer clutching her jaw, but was speaking clearly. Equally obvious was the fact that the Head was extremely angry, her eyes a slate grey that seemed to bore there way through the young man as easily as an industrial laser.

The young guard gulped slightly, suddenly aware that he may have made a small error of judgement. “Oh, right ma’am,” he said softly, “Er, can I ask your name?”

Beside the Head Miss Wilson winced, aware of what was coming next,

“You have just made it patently obvious that you can ask my name, Mr Brookes, however I will assume you intended to ask if you may ask?”

The man nodded faintly, suddenly having a premonition as to the woman’s identity.

“I’m surprised that you do not recognise me, Mr Brookes,” Miss Annersley’s voice had a steel ring to it, “I’m sure there cannot be too many martinets on site.”

On hearing these words the man flushed a bright red, looking across at Miss Wilson he saw her shaking her head, sympathetically,

“M-M-Miss Annersley?” the man closed his eyes in horror, “I-I-I’m sorry, Miss Annersley I had no idea…”

His attempt at apology was cut off, “You have a message for me. Mr Brookes?”

“Er yes, ma’am, the intruder alert was a false alarm. The storm was responsible for shorting a couple of the perimeter alarms - they’ve been fixed now.”

“Thank you, Mr Brookes, you may go now,” Miss Annersley’s voice remained icy. The man nodded slightly and walked toward the door, it was evident in his demeanour that he fully expected to be dismissed by morning. The Head watched him leave, as he reached the door she spoke once more, her voice rather gentler, “Mr Brookes, might I suggest that you ascertain the identity of the person you intend to slander, another time?”

The man nodded, “Yes, ma’am,” he said faintly before thankfully returning to the Gatehouse.

As the security guard left the Gym there was silence, suddenly broken by Miss Wilson quietly giggling. The giggle was infectious and soon most of the Staff were also laughing. Miss Annersley turned round obviously still angry, and all desire to laugh suddenly fled. The Head looked across at her friend,

“Miss Wilson, might I suggest that you ascertain the identity of a person prior to attacking them.” Her tones were still icy.

Miss Wilson swallowed slightly before replying, “Hilda, I’m sorry, I had no idea it was you, all I knew was that you had mentioned the possibility of an intruder just before the power was cut off, when I felt your hand on my shoulder I reacted without thinking.”

“Something for which we have chided certain pupils in the past, Nell.” Miss Annersley was still annoyed, “And certainly not something I expected of a senior member of Staff.”

“I appreciate that, Hilda, it will not happen again.” Miss Wilson stopped then a wide grin spread across her face, “But you must admit, the aftermath was funny, that poor security guard, I thought I’d die when he said he thought you were…” She stopped, suddenly aware that her friend’s eyes were boring into her with that laser-like intensity. “Er, OK Hilda, not a good example, I’ll shut up.”

“I do not appreciate being made a fool of, Miss Wilson,” Miss Annersley’s voice was icy still, “I appreciate even less that my Deputy considers it to have been enacted for her own personal amusement!” She paused to glance around at the rest of the Staff, “This game is at an end, ladies, and I believe it is time everyone retired, before any more assaults occur. Good night.” The Head spun round and stalked out of the Gym.

There was silence in the Gym, then a voice from near the back was heard, “Well that was a little unfair on you, Nell.”

Miss Wilson turned, “No it wasn’t, not really,” she smiled, “No one likes being laughed at, especially if you are as dignified as Hilda.” She grinned round at the rest of the Staff, “I’ll bid you goodnight too, ladies. I’d better find out if I’m locked out of the house!”

Next one - a little bit! Gotta do some research now!

Miss Wilson finished relating the last part and smiled across at her friend.

“Did you really think I’d lock you out, Nell?” The Head sounded quite surprised.

Miss Wilson shrugged, “Not sure, Hilda. It’s so rare for you to lose your temper that even I have no references.” She stopped for a moment, looking down, then, “And I suppose you would have been justified!” She admitted softly, “After all, not only do I hit you. Hard! I then take great delight in laughing, along with everyone else, when that poor lad says you’re drunk and calls you names in the same sentence! If our positions were reversed I’d have locked you out!”

Miss Annersley ran a finger, lightly, along her jaw, wincing as she touched the purple bruise, “Looking back on it, I suppose it was funny Nell.“ she admitted, “And at least you listened to Daisy the other day when she said you should use the elbow, not the fist!”

Madge smiled across at the two friends, “I’m glad to see that you’ve regained your normal demeanour, Hilda,” she said gently. “I suppose you are aware that the entire School was worried about you?”

Joey laughed, “At last count I’ve had thirteen different people ask me if you were unwell, Hilda! Everyone noticed that you were angry, it was quite spoiling the Half Term holiday.”

Miss Annersley smiled slightly, “Perhaps I should get angry more often,” she mused.

“No, don’t do that, Hilda,” Con Mackenzie put in, “leave that to Nell and myself, we’ve got the personality for it. No one thinks anything of us blowing up, not even my kids! With you it’s a definite shock!”

“Was it the surfing that stopped you being annoyed Hilda?” Nell Wilson asked.

“Partly,” Miss Annersley replied, “And partly that, on my way back from the cottage after my shower I met John Coates - he’d come to ask if I’d planned on firing young Tom Brookes.”

“You’re not, are you?” This from Nell.

“Of course not!” Hilda Annersley shook her head reprovingly, “I did, however, ask John where the idea that I was a martinet came from.” She gazed reflectively toward the ceiling before continuing, “I’ve never seen an ex-Chief Inspector turn quite so red before!”

Next little bit - a scene setter!

Returning to the Hall, once the meal was over, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked up onto the raised platform to address everyone.

“Unfortunately, the weather has worsened,” the Head began, “and it’s not going to be possible to continue the outdoor activities for the rest of the day. That means that the rock climbing, water skiing and abseiling will have to wait, I’m afraid.”

Miss Wilson smiled around at everyone, “We’re reliably informed that the weather tomorrow will be far better, so no one will miss out! However it does mean we are going to have to change our plans for this afternoon. Instead of the outdoor activities we will be bringing forward some of the competitions. Firstly, there will be a board games tournament, I’ll let Miss Bruce explain.” She smiled down at the German mistress who stepped up onto the platform.

“The Trivial Pursuits competition is for all girls and visitors,” she began. “You’ll need to get yourselves into teams of four and give your names to Miss Brown and myself. To make it fair each team should have no more than one member of each year, and at least one from both the Middles and Seniors. We’ll then arrange for six teams per game and start the tournament. We also have other board games available, some of which can be played in teams, while others are individual, speak to Miss Brown or myself about whatever interests you.”

There was a subdued murmuring and a number of the girls started to band together, those girls from the Kindergarten and Juniors had already been spirited away by their Staff to take part in their own games. After a short time one of the Seniors stood up,

“Miss Bruce, you didn’t mention the Staff, will they be joining in?”

KB smiled, “Not with this, they have their own contest, it will follow on after tea. The Staff will be taking part in a team competition,” she smiled across at Miss Wilson while saying this, then continued, “You will all be able to cheer on your favourite subject as the Staff will divide into teams to discover whether Science, Languages, the Arts or Mathematics have mistresses with the best knowledge of their own and each others subjects!”

There was further excited talk following this announcement. Miss Annersley turned to her partner, “Nell, KB definitely acknowledged you during her last speech. Did you have some input into this competition?”

Miss Wilson grinned, “I may have suggested something to Katherine,” she said softly, “I just felt it would be a good way of showing the entire School exactly how much knowledge we have of the other subjects.” Her innocent air was almost convincing.

The Head looked across at her friend, not fooled one iota by the innocent act. She sighed, “And exactly how did you plan to ensure that I would take part?” she asked softly.

Miss Wilson smiled, “Hilda, you wouldn’t dream of refusing, your honour is at stake!”

“Hah!”

Yay for Lesley, that was a lovely post. I love the interplay between Hilda and Nell. More please, very, very soon.

Is it me ... or is Nell seriously taking the war into the enemy's camp here? Shocked

Getting at Hilda's lack of science general knowledge?
Smacking Hilda on the jaw?
Sniggering at her being called a martinet etc?
Coming up with the quiz idea when she knows science is not Hilda's subject?

Hope Hilda has been continuing to work on her science trivia...

As for Nell - I love what you're doing but I predict a fall - and it ain't going to be a short drop! I suspect Hilda is cooking something up and will be crowing with laughter when Nell falls for it!!
*chuckle*

Bring it on, Lesley!! This is great!! Very Happy

*g* Lovely. I agree. Nell is definitely trying to set Hilda up for a fall....and will almost certainly do the falling herself!

*sniggering and eagerly awaiting the match*

#1202:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Sat Mar 13, 2004 8:37 pm

The Trivial Pursuits tournament went well and the girls enjoyed cheering for their friends in the final. They also enjoyed the other board games too, however it was acknowledged that everyone was eagerly awaiting the competition after tea. KB had admitted that she had not prepared any of the questions, instead passing the role on to Mollie Mackenzie, who was to be the quizmaster.

The Staff had quickly conferred and arranged for teams of four,

Sciences
Miss Wilson
Miss Ferrars
Miss Green
Miss Gray (Rebecca)

The Arts
Miss Annersley
Miss Derwent
Miss Townsend
Miss Brown

Languages
Mlle Berne
Miss Denny
Miss Bruce
Miss Oldroyd

Mathematics
Miss Wilmot
Ms Barber
Mrs McRae
Miss Gray (Rachel)

The draw for the first two games was made and the first match, Science against Mathematics began. The match was fairly well balanced, however, Miss Ferrars had a significant knowledge of Maths and, as a Physics graduate Miss Gray was reasonably well versed in the latest Mathematics, therefore the Science team won eventually. The second match between the Arts (English and History) and Languages was rather more one sided - both Miss Annersley and Miss Derwent having extensive knowledge of both French and German plus some Italian. The final therefore was between Sciences and the Arts. During a break before the Final started Miss Annersley cornered her friend,

“Did you plan this, Nell?” she asked, “Only it’s rather strange that none of the others seem that surprised at how things have turned out!”

Miss Wilson smiled, “Yes, I’d noticed that!” she said, “Strange isn’t it?”

The Final began, with the School and visitors looking on intently. The contest was surprisingly close, with first one side, then the other surging ahead. The final round came with nothing between them. This was an individual round, each contestant was asked four questions, however they could choose whether the questions were on their own subject or on the opposing team’s subject. If they chose the opposing team’s subject and answered correctly they would receive double points, however if they answered incorrectly the opposing team would have the opportunity to gain bonus points.

With just the two Captains left to answer questions the Science team were five points in the lead, Miss Wilson, as all Team Captains had, requested questions from her opposing team’s subject. Mrs Mackenzie began,

“From which Shakespeare play does the following quote come from - ‘We few, we happy few, we band of brothers’”

Miss Wilson thought for some time, “King Henry The Fifth,” she said eventually,

“Correct, two points. How did the poet Byron die?”

The Deputy Head shrugged, “Killed in a duel?“

“Incorrect, Arts team?“

“He contracted malaria.” Miss Annersley replied.

“Correct, one point to the Arts team. How long did the Hundred Years’ War last?”

Miss Wilson smiled, “100 years, or is that too simple?“

Mollie Mackenzie also smiled, “I’m afraid so, Arts team?”

“116 years.” Both History mistresses replied together.

“Correct, and finally what relationship was Queen Anne to James I?”

Miss Wilson sat going through the Kings and Queens of England before answering, “Great-granddaughter.”

“Correct, Science team scored four points, Arts team scored two. The Science team are now seven points ahead with just one more round to be played.”

Miss Wilson smiled across at her friend, the only way the Arts could win was if Miss Annersley answered all four Science questions correctly. Miss Annersley did not smile, concentrating on the quizmaster.

“First question,” Mrs Mackenzie began, “What term describes all of these - X-rays, microwaves, visible light and radio?”

‘A physics question to start,’ thought Miss Wilson, ‘excell….’

“Electromagnetic waves.” Miss Annersley answered smoothly. Miss Wilson looked across at her partner in some shock. The questions continued,

“Correct, two points. What is the name of the organelles that provide the power for the cell?”

“The mitochondria.”

“Correct, name the three types of tectonic plate margin.”

“Constructive, Destructive and Conservative.” Miss Annersley’s voice was calm.

“Correct,” Mrs Mackenzie looked at the scores, “The Arts team are one point behind, there is one question to go. Final question, other than hydrogen bonding, name three types of chemical bonding?”

Miss Annersley looked back at her own team, then out into the audience, all totally silent now, enthralled by the Final. She then looked across at her partner and, slowly, winked. “Ionic, covalent and metallic.” she said clearly.

Miss Wilson’s jaw dropped as, with a smile, Mollie Mackenzie announced, “Correct, the Arts team have won by one point!”

Metallic? What the heck is a metallic bond? Embarassed Embarassed (someone enlighten me)

(Would have ranked covalent and hydrogen bonds highest, with ionic a distant third, due to focus on biological systems where water disrupts most of those ionic jobs)

(Only got the mitochondria and electromagnetic radiation right. Score 2/8. Obviously need to go back to school!)

Kathy - I'd totally forgotten about hydrogen bonding! Embarassed Have adapted the question slightly to account for it!

Metallic bonding - in which positive ions with noble gas configurations are held together by a pool of free electrons. The way elements are held together to form metals.

Out of the 8 questions I could have answered 5!

Here's a bit more!

There was a cheer from all the spectators and everyone was congratulated. Miss Wilson waited until the crowds had dispersed before approaching her friend,

“How did you do it, Hilda?” she asked quietly.

Miss Annersley looked across at her partner, “Why Nell, I’ve always known a great deal about science, I thought you knew that,” the Head’s face was completely serious, except for the slight smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

Miss Wilson waited as a number of late comers appeared to add their congratulations, she then watched as Miss Annersley dismissed everyone until the evening meal. As the girls and House Staff filed out of the Hall she stood, waiting, while Miss Annersley was surrounded by Staff once again. Eventually her patience snapped and she stalked up to her friend, with a terse, “We have to talk, now!” she almost dragged Miss Annersley from the Hall and into one of the smaller form rooms.

The Head looked across at Miss Wilson, “Is there something wrong, Nell?” She asked, concern upon her features.

“Tell me how you did it, Hilda,” Nell’s voice was very tense.

“How I knew weeks ago, that the competition was planned? Or how I answered the Science questions?” Miss Annersley’s voice was quietly interrogative.

“The questions of course, you can’t have known about the con….” Miss Wilson stopped, “You knew about the contest weeks ago?” She asked faintly.

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes Nell, it was my idea,” she said calmly,

Miss Wilson laughed, “No it wasn’t, I had the idea when speaking with KB,”

“Yes, I really must congratulate Katherine,” mused the Head, “She even allowed you to think you’d had the idea, when in fact she had suggested it. Genius that girl!”

Miss Wilson stared, open-mouthed, “She set me up?”

“Yes Nell,” Miss Annersley nodded sympathetically, “But don’t be too hard on her, she wasn’t the only one, almost everyone had a hand in it!”

“Mollie?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “No, not Mollie,” she said quickly, “but nearly everyone else! I have had some rather intensive coaching for the past two weeks or so, Nell, mainly on the Scientific side. Plus, as we didn’t know beforehand whether the Arts team would be facing the Maths or Languages teams, Nancy has been coaching me too!”

“I don’t believe it, why would they have all taken part?”

“Probably because I was the one asking, Nell.” The Head smiled, “Well, I do have to ensure that my titles are held honestly now don’t I?”

“Your titles?”

“Autocrat and martinet!”

Little more to be going on with - going out for afternoon so will return to this this evening!

A little later saw the two rejoin the rest of the Staff in their Sitting Room, they were still talking about the contest.

“Well really, Nell did you expect me to do nothing?” Miss Annersley’s voice was quietly reasonable, “Telling a Middle that I was bad at Science! I think, after this, you’ll find that the Head is considered to be pretty good at Science, better than the Head of Science’s attempts at both English and History!”

“Only because you cheated, Hilda!”

“I did not cheat!” Miss Annersley sounded quite shocked, “I didn’t know what questions were to be asked, I had not spoken to Mollie about it and she was the one who arranged all the questions. Admittedly she got questions from all the mistresses but she had hundreds of them. I didn’t know which questions she would choose, any more than any of the other mistresses.”

“Hmmm,” Miss Wilson conceded the point reluctantly, she remained silent for a short time and then something suddenly struck her, “When you said that you’d had intense coaching, mainly on the Scientific side, what did you mean?”

“Exactly that, Nell, whenever you were teaching or otherwise engaged I’d have sessions with your scientific staff, Vida, Lesley and Rebecca were all extremely patient with me. The concerns I had about the Chemistry side were solved because a number of the other staff had studied chemistry too.” Miss Annersley stopped as it was obvious that her friend wasn’t listening.

“My scientific staff,” the Deputy Head repeated bleakly, “they knew and didn’t say anything?”

“Well, yes….”

Further in the Staff Room, and able to clearly hear the Heads’ conversation, two of the mistresses looked at each other in some consternation,

“She knows,” Lesley Green said quietly,

Rebecca Gray nodded, “Time to leave, I think!”

The Earth Sciences and Physics mistresses moved quickly to the rear of the room, there, helped by Rebecca’s sister, Rachel, and by Rachael Pelter, one of the large windows at the back was opened and the two climbed out.

“Let us know when she calms down!” Lesley said to Rachael, before the pair slipped away.

Yes, me too! Just to clarify - Rebecca is Physics mistress, Rachel is Maths mistress. It's Lesley and Rebecca who have done a runner!

Near the door, Miss Wilson suddenly looked around the Staff Room,

“Where are they?” she demanded of Ruth Derwent, who had just entered the room herself, “the Science Staff, where are they?”

“Er, well Vida is with the others at camp but I believe Rebecca and Lesley are here,” Ruth said, puzzled.

Miss Wilson stalked into the centre of the room, those staff in her way rapidly melting back to leave a clear aisle. Near the back of the room she spied Rachel Gray,

“Rachel, where’s your sister?” she demanded.

Rachel swallowed, “No idea, Ne.. Miss Wilson,” she said swiftly,

The Science Head spied Rachael Pelter nearby, “What are you doing here, Rachael?” she demanded rudely,

“I was invited, Nell,” Rachael returned,

“Invited? By who?” No one dared to point out the poor grammar in that sentence.

“Erm, well, Lesley invited me,” Rachael said softly, “but I’ve no idea where she is at the moment.”

The Deputy Head glared at both Rach(a)els, “I suppose you also knew they were doing this?” she asked, “Hardly loyal behaviour for my staff now was it?”

“Oh that’s not fair Nell,” Rachael replied, “I mean it was Hilda asking for help!”

“So?”

The maths mistress gulped, before saying, “I think what Rachael means is that both Rebecca and Lesley found themselves between the Devil and the Deep,”

Miss Annersley had followed her friend to the rear of the Staff Room, at these words she spoke, “My apologises for interrupting,” she said softly, “but, which of us was considered to be the Devil?”

Rachel Gray and Rachael Pelter looked at Miss Annersley, then Miss Wilson, they then looked at each other before turning back to face the friends, “Both of you!” they chorused.

Behind Miss Wilson there was a splutter, instantly stifled, she turned to glare at Miss Annersley. The Head rapidly straightened her face and gazed back in all innocence at her friend.

“Something funny, Hilda?” she asked crossly.

“Not a thing, Nell,” replied her friend.

Can't have Nell upsetting her greatest fan!

Miss Wilson stared across at her friend for some seconds, then, suddenly, her face split into a wide grin, “I’m over-reacting here, aren’t I?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Just a little, yes,” she smiled, “and, if it makes you feel any better, I suppose, although I didn’t know what questions Mollie was going to ask, the Staff helping me did. So, in a way I did cheat!”

“Well, as the alternative was that you had suddenly gained four Science degrees in two weeks, I think that’s a reasonable assumption.” Miss Wilson returned, smiling. “Not that I don’t think you could do it!” she added quickly, “Just, perhaps not quite that quickly!” She turned to the two Rach(a)els, “Tell Lesley and Rebecca that I’ll not eat them!” she said, smiling, “I’ll even leave their skin intact!”

She turned and, along with her partner, walked over to one of the tables, as they walked the Head remarked, sotto voice, “You’re not going soft now are you Nell?”

Miss Wilson turned to look at her friend, Miss Annersley’s face was a picture of concern but with a mischievous look in the eyes, “No Hilda,” she replied, just as softly, “I’ve just decided not to waste my time attacking the others. I’ll just start planning my next campaign against you!”

“Oh that’s alright then!” the soft retort, “Wouldn’t like to think you were losing your touch!”

The two friends sat at one of the tables along with sundry other Staff. Also there were Madge and Con Mackenzie - Joey had had to go home as she was expecting visitors that evening. When the bell rang out for the evening meal they all moved across to the Hall. At the Staff table, Miss Wilson spied both Lesley and Rebecca, they both smiled nervously as she wandered over to join them.

“Next time I have a scheme aimed at Hilda,” she began, “I expect your full cooperation.”

“Of course Nell,” Lesley said quickly,

“No problem,” Rebecca agreed.

The Deputy Head grinned and walked over to take her seat next to Hilda.

...

The evening meal was halfway over when another mistress appeared. Peggy Burnett walked into the Dining Hall, still wearing her coat, and with water dripping from her - it was now raining quite hard outside. She moved quickly to the Head, “Hilda, I had to come back,” she said smiling, others of the Staff made a space for her and she sat opposite the Head.

Miss Annersley looked across at the Head of the Games Department worriedly, “Peggy, is there something wrong at the camp?” she asked quickly.

“No, everything’s going swimmingly - although if this weather keeps up that’ll no longer be just a description but a fact!” Peggy smiled. “Xanthe and Chloe have the camp running like clockwork and the kids are enjoying themselves! No I felt I had to return to see Corney!”

Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked across, puzzled, “Do you mean Cornelia Flower, I mean Van Alden?” this from Miss Wilson.

“Well of course!”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “Peggy, we’ve not been able to trace Cornelia, you know that, she is one of a large number of Old Girls and other characters that do not appear to have transferred across to the Real World.”

“We’re still looking, Peggy,” this from Madge Russell, “We’ve got a number of leads still to follow up and Robin Humphries keeps checking the Net and sites like Friends Reunited frequently. So far though we’ve been unsuccessful.”

Peggy Burnett looked very worried, “I don’t understand,” she said softly, “Hilda, we had a message from you, about eight last night, to say that Cornelia Van Alden had been traced and was arriving in Melbourne last night. You asked that Evadne Van Alden be sent back to the School immediately. An addition to the message was from you Con,” she nodded to Con Mackenzie, “asking that Janetta also be sent back as you wanted her to meet Corney. We were very short staffed so one of the Security guards volunteered to drive the two girls back here.”

Miss Annersley looked very grave, “Peggy, I did not send that message, neither did Con add to it. Cornelia Van Alden has not been found.”

Peggy swallowed, “B-b-but we had a phone call confirming they had arrived,” she whispered, “Was that also false?”

Miss Wilson nodded, “It must have been,” she said, “the question is, what has happened to those two girls and the guard?”

You know, it gets me every time. A while ago I thought, don't be fooled by this merry little half term they're having, there'll be another cliff along shortly. But then I forgot all about it, all about the bomb and I merrily fell off (fortunately landing on the trampoline).

Next bit!

Con Mackenzie stiffened, “Are you saying Janetta has been missing for nearly 24 hours?” Her voice, although only a whisper, held suppressed rage.

Peggy went even paler, “Con, we didn’t know…”

“We need to discuss this in less open surroundings,” the Head said smoothly, she turned to the Senior Mistress, “Ruth, take over here please,” Miss Derwent nodded.

Miss Annersley rose, and, signalling for Miss Wilson, Madge, Con and Peggy to join her, walked back to her study. Once in the Study the Head immediately contacted the Security Chief, he arrived within only a few minutes, during that time Nell had succeeded in getting Con to calm down enough to stop shouting at poor Peggy. Miss Annersley quickly appraised John Coates of the situation.

“You’ll need to contact the Police, Hilda,” he said immediately, his voice low to prevent him alarming Con, “I’ll stake my reputation that my guard had nothing to do with this, and the fact that all three have gone missing suggests something nasty may have happened.” He looked across at Peggy, “ Who was the guard?” he asked.

Peggy Burnett, if possible, went even whiter, “It was Shane,” she said softly.

John Coates paled himself, “Call the Police, Hilda, we need to find out what has happened, quickly!”

The Police arrived very quickly, owing to the on-going investigation centring on the Real Chalet School, and John Coates’ connections, Chris Taylor, the Police Chief himself arrived, along with a couple of uniformed officers. They swiftly established all that had occurred the night before,

“The telephone call came at what time?”

“Just after eight pm,” Miss Burnett replied, “It was unusual in that it didn’t come through to any of our mobiles, instead coming to the camp site office, but it wasn’t a problem. As the one with overall charge of the girls I went along to take it,”

“And the voice was definitely that of your Headmistress?”

“Well,” Peggy began, “I thought so at the time, although it was a very bad line, very crackly. It said that Cornelia Fl… sorry Van Alden was flying into Melbourne that evening and could we send back her daughter Evadne. There was a slight interruption then Hilda, I mean the voice I thought was Hilda, said also Janetta Mackenzie. I said I’d have to get one of the Security Staff to ferry them back in one of the School Landrovers and Hi….the voice said that would be fine.”

“Anything more?”

“Only another call a little before eleven, to say they had arrived safely. I thought no more of it. I just decided this afternoon that I’d like to see Corney myself and so drove back here to discover that the School knew nothing about it!”

The Police Chief turned to Miss Annersley, “You did not make that call?” he asked.

“I did not, nor did my Deputy,” Miss Annersley returned smoothly.

The Police Chief nodded somewhat abstracted, he turned back to Peggy Burnett, “How did you know it was the School? I mean it could have been someone just saying it was the School.”

Peggy shook her head, “the phone in the camp office had a readout showing the number calling. I recognised it as the Head’s own line, here in her Study,” she pointed across to the telephone on the desk.

“I see,” he turned back to Miss Annersley, “Your security system is such that this is unlikely to have been someone from outside. Would it have been possible for someone to come here yesterday evening at around eight and again at eleven without being seen?”

Miss Annersley considered, “I assume you mean among the Staff and girls?” she asked quietly, “Yes, it probably would have been possible, at eight everyone was busy partaking off the various amusements devised for them, no one would be likely to be missed. At eleven we had just got the girls to bed, it would have been simple for someone to slip down here to the Admin block.”

The Police Chief conferred with his staff for a few minutes then, “Miss Annersley, among your Staff, are there any called Rachel?”

“You don’t mean…?”

“At the moment it’s just a thought, ma’am, but one we must follow up upon, we are investigating how someone calling themselves Rachel sent a bomb to a pupil at this School. It‘s possible that this could be related.”

“I see, well we have three members of staff with Rachel as their first name,” the Head began, “Rachel Dorling is a Junior Mistress, Rachel Gray is Maths mistress and Rachel Trent is IT mistress, they were all here last night.”

Miss Wilson, sitting quietly with her arm around Con Mackenzie looked up, “We also had two guests,” she said quietly, “Rachel Macdonald and Rachael Pelter, they were both staying here last night. But I can assure you that none of them are in any way involved, either with the disappearance of these girls or with the bomb!”

“I agree with my partner, Mr Taylor, none of my Staff are involved in this.” Miss Annersley’s voice was adamant.

“Nevertheless it is one avenue we much research.” Chris Taylor returned smoothly, “after all, it is rather strange that this should happen on a night when there are five to choose from, almost as though planned that way!”

Next bit

The night before…

“Are you sure you don’t mind, Shane?” Miss Burnett asked the young security guard.

Shane grinned, “No worries, Miss Burnett, the girl must go visit her mum! I’ll probably stay home overnight - come back tomorrow or Sunday. You’ll not need me here!”

Peggy smiled, “No, now we’ve got the camp set up it would be a pretty boring time for you! Don’t let the girls cheek you, Shane, they should know better.” She turned to Evvy and Janetta, “I’m trusting you both,” she said softly, “Evvy, you’re oldest, make sure you both behave like Guides.”

“Yes, Miss Burnett,” the two girls chorused. They got into the back of the landrover and Shane started the engine. Peggy Burnett watched as they drove out of the campsite.

There was silence in the vehicle for a short time, then Evvy spoke, “Mr Coates, have you always been a security man?”

Shane looked in the rear view mirror at the two girls, “Name’s Shane, girls,” he drawled, “Mr Coates is my dad!”

The girls both laughed.

“Naw, I’ve not always been a security man, I only joined Real Chalet School at the beginning of the year!”

“What did you do before that, Shane?” Janetta Mackenzie had inherited the red hair of her mother, as well as a slight Scots accent.

“I was at Uni,” the man responded, “did a degree in Engineering, finished it just before Christmas, what about you?”

“Er, well I lived in Singapore before coming to Australia - dad works for a bank.” Janetta said carefully, “Mum used to teach at the School in Europe, when she heard it was reopening here she entered me, I started last term.”

“What about you, Evvy?”

“Oh I was with the School in Europe - I transferred here when it did.” Evvy was also very careful about exactly what she said. Both girls had had the need for secrecy impressed upon them. “Are you going to stay a security man, Shane?”

The blond man laughed, “Not me, I’m just taking a year out, I’m joining the Police next January - not local though - I’m going over to Perth.”

“Why so far away?” Evvy was curious.

“Because my dad knows half the senior police officers on the eastern side of Oz! I want to make it on my own, not because I’m John Coates’ son.”

There was silence for a time, then the two girls started whispering, eventually, after a few, “You ask” “No you ask” Evvy spoke, “Er Shane, do you have a girlfriend?”

Shane grinned, “Not at the moment girls,” he paused then continued, “and before you ask, you’re both too young - ask me again in a few years!” He chuckled and the girls giggled.

The trip continued, as it was now getting quite dark out it was noticeable that there were very few lights, and little evidence of civilisation. Janetta mentioned this to the driver, “Yes,” Shane replied, “This isn’t the Bush or anything, but it’s pretty isolated, you wouldn’t want to be caught out here all alone!”

“There are hardly any lights,” this from Evvy, “No one lives out here, do they?”

“Not many, no,” Shane replied, “The occasional farmer but nothing else,”

What’s that?” Janetta was pointing up ahead, strung across the road were two police cars, light flashing. A uniformed officer stood in front of them, swinging a torch to slow down the approaching landrover.

Shane stopped the vehicle and dropped the window, immediately the humid night air swept into the air-conditioned landrover. “What’s the problem?” He asked of the police officer who had come to the window.

“Are you from the Real Chalet School, mate?”

Shane looked startled, “Yes, but…”

“Message for you, an emergency,” the policeman said quickly, “you can take it in my car,”

“Oh, right, thanks,” Shane opened the door and started to climb out of the jeep. Suddenly he seemed to spot something wrong and swiftly slammed the door shut again. Quickly shouting to the girls, “Down, on the floor!” He then spun the landrover round and gunned the engine. As he did the girls heard, through the open window, the sound of cursing before, suddenly, three shots rang out. The first two appeared to hit the landrover itself, but the third hit with a soft thump, and caused Shane to groan and slump forward over the steering wheel…

Here we go!

At this both the girls screamed and Evvy got up, intending to reach for the steering wheel, “Stay down, Evvy, as low as you can,” it was Shane’s voice, strained and showing obvious pain but still fairly strong. He remained slumped over the steering wheel but the landrover was still under his control. He kept the vehicle moving quickly. Behind them were the lights of the two police cars, speeding along in pursuit.

“What’s happening?” Janetta was almost in tears, “Why are the Police chasing us?”

“They’re not Police,” Shane returned quietly, “They were wearing the wrong uniforms for this Region and carrying non- standard weaponry.” He smiled round at the two girls but they could see the sweat on a face pale beneath a deep tan, “Sometimes being a copper’s son comes in useful!”

“They’re trying to kill us, aren’t they?” Evvy’s voice was quiet,

“Yes, I don’t know why but they knew we were coming.” Shane took a deep breath and winced, his hands white on the steering wheel, “This jeep is powerful, we may be able to out-run them. But if either of you has a mobile, see if you can get a signal, call the police!”

There was a few minutes silence as the girls scrabbled in their bags for their phones, “There’s no signal!” Janetta said, “we’ll keep trying,”

Shane nodded, driving as fast as possible he had managed to increase the distance between the landrover and the pursuing cars, suddenly though he slowed down,

“What’s happening? Why are you stopping? We were losing them!” The two girls cried out almost simultaneously.

Shane looked back at the girls, his face very anxious, “One of the bullets must have nicked the tank, we’re losing petrol. We’ll have to get off the main road, quickly. Look for a side road girls, we can’t just go off-road as they’ll see our tracks!”

The two girls feverishly started scanning the sides of the road, watching for a turning, some minutes later one was spotted on the left and Shane spun the landrover down it. He switched off the headlights to prevent their trail being followed and, moving as fast as he dared, drove the landrover along the track. Outside, the humidity had risen and, in the distance were large, dark, anvil shaped clouds, heralding a thunderstorm. It was not a night to be outside unprotected.

A short time later the jeep started to shudder and cough as the lack of fuel made its mark. Shane drove the vehicle off the road and straight for a large clump of bushes, before the landrover came to a full stop it had disappeared inside the clump and was undetectable from outside. As the engine juddered to a halt the rain started. Shane gave a small smile of satisfaction, at least that should cover any tracks.

Next bit!

There was silence in the landrover for a time as all three occupants listened for signs of pursuit. Hearing nothing Evvy Van Alden spoke, “Do you think we’ve lost them, Shane?”

Shane swallowed slightly and forced himself to stay awake, “For now, Evvy,” he said quietly, “But they may keep looking, especially if they see signs of the petrol we lost on the main road.” He turned slightly to look at the two girls and was unable to stifle a groan.

“What is it? Are you hurt, Shane?” Janetta had a small torch in her hand and shone it over at the man, it showed blood on the back of his shirt, just below the right shoulder blade.

“I think one of the bullets hit me,” Shane admitted, “I don’t know how bad it is, but it’s bloody painful. Sorry girls.”

“Sorry? For getting shot - that wasn’t your fault, Shane.” Evvy returned, “But you need a doctor.”

“Better try your mobiles again, see if you can reach anyone,” Shane said softly.

“I’ll keep trying,” this from Janetta, “But I think the storm is affecting the mobile network!” There had been a few, distant peals of thunder and they appeared to be getting closer.

The three sat in silence for a time; all of a sudden, over the noise of the rain, car engines were heard. The girls were about to rush outside but Shane stopped them with a whisper, “We don‘t know who it is! Stay quiet!”

The three listened as the noise of the engines grew louder and light from car headlights pierced the gloom. The car engines suddenly were switched off and a different noise was heard. The noise of voices, very close…

“Any sign of them?”

“Nothing, this bloody rain is wiping out any tracks, if they did come down here there’s nothing left to show it!”

“Well keep searching, we don’t get paid if those two girls aren’t dead, she was adamant about that!”

“Did she ever say why she wanted them dead?”

“Hell no, and I wasn’t about to ask her! Who cares anyway, we‘re just paid to pull the trigger!”

The voices faded into the distance, a short time later the car engines started up again and the cars moved off. Inside the landrover there was silence for a time, the two girls holding onto each other fearfully. Shane looked across at them, he estimated Evvy to be about 14, Janetta a little younger, who the Hell would want them dead? And why? He tried to give them some reassurance,

“OK, girls, they haven’t found us, and they’ve moved off to look somewhere else. The best thing we can do is sit tight until daylight, and then try and find a way out of here, alright?”

Both girls nodded, seeming reassured by his matter-of-fact tones. The man attempted to smile at them both but moved awkwardly, unable to stop himself from groaning, his face lost all colour. The two girls saw all of this.

“Shane, I think you need to lie down,” Evvy said this softly,

Shane laughed then stopped, wincing, “perhaps, Evvy, but I don’t think this jeep is big enough and we can’t go outside!”

The two girls conferred for a short time, “Suppose we drop the passenger seat down, Shane?” Janetta asked, “There may be room then.”

“Fine, I’ll do it,” Shane said, he made to move, turned whiter still and sank back in his chair, “maybe you’d better do it,” he whispered.

After some wrestling with the controls, the two girls managed to get the front passenger seat to lie flat. Shane then, painfully, dragged himself over to lie with his head on the back seat, full length, and his feet on the dashboard. Evvy climbed over to the driver’s seat to help lift his feet up, rather than leave them in the foot well.

“Why are you doing that?” Shane asked,

“Shock,” Evvy explained, “I think you’re in shock, this is to reduce the effects,”

The two girls helped the man lie flat with his feet raised and head down and turned to one side. They then retrieved their sleeping bags from the packs in the back, and spread one of them over the man. They also placed a pad from the jeep’s first aid box on his wound.

Shane smiled slightly, “You both make good Guides,” he said, “even though I think you’re over reacting as far as I’m concerned.”

“This is only temporary, Shane,” Evvy said, “Until help comes,”

“That’s right,” Janetta put in, “The School will be looking for us, won’t they? When we don’t turn up?” The two girls opened out the other sleeping bag and huddled together under it.

Shane swallowed, his mouth very dry, “Yes girls, they’ll be looking for us,” he said with as much optimism as possible, inside though his heart sank. The initial message looked to be false, if so it was quite possible that the School knew nothing about them.

All of this happened on the Friday night - ie the night of the thunderstorm and Lazer Wars - when Hilda got hit by Nell! They only find out that the three are missing at the RSC the following evening.

#1337:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Wed Mar 17, 2004 1:21 am

Seems to be some anxiety about this - can't think why! Twisted Evil

The night was spent, fairly uncomfortably, in the landrover. The girls did manage to sleep for short periods but there wasn’t enough room to stretch out. Once Shane was sure that their pursuers had gone he allowed the girls out for comfort breaks. He also, on a couple of occasions, managed to drag himself out. Although unable to see the wound in his back himself, Evvy was able to describe it. The wound had stopped bleeding and, as there did not appear to be an exit wound, the bullet was obviously still in there. He felt it grind whenever he moved his shoulder.

At first light, although very tired and in a lot of pain, Shane actually felt better. He managed, cautiously, to get up and, enjoining the girls to remain where they were, climbed on top of the Landrover. In his hands he held a pair of binoculars. He looked all round before climbing back into the vehicle.

“OK,” he began, “Now there’s good news and bad. Good news first, they have no idea that we are here, from what I can tell the landrover is perfectly hidden,”

“That’s good,” Evvy said, “What’s the bad news?”

Shane swallowed, leaning back to rest on the seat, “They obviously think we’re somewhere close, because they’ve not moved. About half a mile away the two police cars are sat beside a little caravan. There are two men that I can tell, and they’re making searches of the surrounding countryside.”

Both the girls gasped and he made haste to comfort them, “If we stay in the jeep we’ll be OK,”

“But we can’t stay in here forever, Shane, besides you need a doctor!” This from Janetta,

“And we’ve kept trying to use the phones but there’s no signal!” Evvy put in,

The blond man nodded, “I know, I don’t think this area can be covered by any network. The phone companies go by population - if there’s too few around it’s not worth while, especially as most farmers would have radio.”

“It’s a pity the jeep hasn’t got a CB radio or anything,”

Shane smiled, “When we get back you can suggest it to the Head!”

“How are we going to get back, Shane?” The sombre question came from Evvy, Shane thought he could see in her eyes that she knew how desperate their situation was. However, like him, she did not want to upset Janetta.

“About 3 miles that way,” he pointed, “There’s a small farm, if we can wait until tonight, once it’s dark, I think we stand a good chance of reaching it without them seeing us. There’s no point trying now because they’ll see us straight away.”

“So we’ve got to wait until tonight?”

“Yes, can you manage until then?”

The girls looked at each other, Evvy spoke for them both, “Of course we can!”

Next bit - more this afternoon - maybe Twisted Evil

The day passed very slowly, all three were glad that it was not summer as the small space available for them in the landrover was cramped enough, without the stifling heat. During the night before, the three had managed to cope, for fluids, with the cans and bottles carried by them. However these had been used up and, during the morning, there were some concerns about whether they would have enough to drink. Luckily, during their comfort breaks, the girls had discovered a tiny stream, just large enough for them to fill the bottles and flasks. This proved to be exceptionally important when, by late afternoon, Shane started to become very thirsty and run a temperature.

The girls made sure he had enough to drink and helped him outside on the few occasions he needed to go. They noticed that this was very infrequent, however, and realised that, his temperature would quickly use up any fluid.

By the time the surroundings started to become dark, around 6pm, it was raining heavily once more, Shane was pleased because he felt that would help cover their tracks even more. Wincing somewhat, he hauled himself upright to speak to the girls,

“Evvy, Janetta, I think it’ll be dark enough in an hour or so, to make a start. You have a compass don’t you?”

The girls nodded, having retrieved their compasses from their packs earlier.

Shane smiled slightly and swallowed, “OK, now you must keep going South- West for about 3 miles, the farm will be directly in front of you. Try to make as little noise as possible, and not to switch on your torches, that’s flashlights Evvy!” He smiled slightly at the American girl.

Evvy smiled back rather uncertainly, “Shane, why are you saying all of this?” she asked, “It almost sounds as though you’re not coming with us!”

“I’m not,” Shane replied, he held his hand up to warn the girls to keep quiet as their exclamations could be loud enough to reach the gunmen. “Look girls, this bullet in my back means I can’t move quickly, you’d probably end up having to carry me!”

“Doesn’t matter,” Evvy said stubbornly, “We can’t leave you here, suppose we can’t remember where the jeep is? Or if those men find you!”

“If you don’t come Shane, we’re not going either!” Janetta stated, and Evvy nodded in agreement.

Shane sighed, his head was swimming from the effects of the high temperature and he saw that the girls were serious, “OK, girls, I’ll come.” he said eventually, “But you must promise me that you’ll obey orders. If those men find us, I want you to run away, leave dealing with them to me.”

The two nodded reluctantly.

About eight thirty that evening they set out, the rain had eased somewhat, now being a fine mist that seeped into every pore. Shane was pleased for the moisture, though. Every step was painful, jarring through his entire body as the effects of the bullet in his back were felt. Coupled with the temperature he had started, he felt he couldn’t possibly walk the three miles. However the two girls helped; Janetta walked on ahead, a tiny pen torch illuminating the hand-held compass to ensure they did not lose their way. Evvy, at least half a head taller than Janetta, walked beside Shane, his right arm across her shoulders and giving him support.

They walked in silence for over an hour, their pace dictated by the speed Shane could manage, in a break in the vegetation, all three suddenly saw the lights of the farm, they seemed to be only a few hundred yards away at most, and all three felt a lightening of spirit - perhaps they would make it after all! It was therefore a dreadful shock when, suddenly from out of the shadows, a man stepped. Still dressed in the police uniform, the man carried a revolver in a holster around his waist, and held a double -barrelled shotgun. The shotgun was pointed directly toward the three.

“Now I just knew you were around here somewhere,” he remarked softly, “Knew we just had to wait, and you’d come to us.”

Janetta backed away from the man and stood beside Shane, the blond man had straightened slightly on seeing the gunman, removing his weight from Evvy’s shoulders. He placed a hand, lightly, on each of the girls’ heads, “When I say so, run!” he ordered softly, his voice so quiet it only carried to the two girls, no further. Both girls nodded fearfully.

Shane raised his hands and stepped toward the gunman, “Look mate, there’s no need for this,” he said cheerfully, “however much you’re getting paid, we can pay more, and you’ll not have to kill anyone!” He stepped closer, as soon as he was sure that he was a big enough target he suddenly lunged forward, grabbing the shotgun barrel. “Run, girls, don’t stop!” His command rang out and the two girls reacted, turning back, in the direction they had just come, running as fast as they could. Meanwhile Shane and the gunman struggled with the shotgun, had Shane been fit, it’s likely that he could have wrestled the weapon from the other man, however, with a bullet in his back there was only one possible resolution to the struggle. The other man kicked out, catching Shane on the leg, he dropped to his knees, his grip on the shotgun loosening. The other man wrenched it from his grasp and drove the barrel into Shane’s back, directly on top of the bullet wound. Shane collapsed to the ground.

After a minute or so he pushed himself, trembling, back up onto his knees. The gunman was a few yards away, the shotgun pointed directly toward him. In the undergrowth behind him, Shane heard the two girls scream, a few seconds later the other gunman appeared, holding both struggling girls by the arms, dragging them back to the clearing.

“Excellent, that wasn’t too much trouble!” the man in front of Shane purred, “We’ll have earned our money, no sweat!”

“You don’t have to do this!” Shane’s voice sounded weak even to him, but he had no strength left. Evvy and Janetta were silent now, seeing Shane on his knees.

“Of course I don’t,” agreed the gunman, “But, confidentially, I’ll tell you, the money is just a bonus. I enjoy killing!” He lifted the shotgun so that the barrels were pointed directly at Shane’s head and Shane saw the man’s fingers start to whiten on the trigger…

Back at the Real Chalet School, the Chief Inspector’s last sentence seemed to silence everyone in the Head’s Study, everyone thinking about the possibility that one of their own could be responsible for the disappearance of the two girls and Shane Coates. The silence was broken suddenly by Con Mackenzie, shrugging off Nell Wilson’s restraining arm she rose and walked over to the policeman, staring him in the eye she spoke,

“I don’t care about your research, I don’t care about any investigations. What are you doing about finding my daughter?”

“We’re doing all we can, Mrs Mackenzie, we’ve got the route from Miss Burnett and we have people out searching already. We will find them, I promise.”

“How can you be sure? They had to travel across miles of empty land, they could be anywhere..” Con spat back, “ They’ve already been missing 24 hours and it’s pitch black out now.” She turned to the white-faced Peggy Burnett, “This is your fault! How could you be so stupid as to send them off with just a message on the phone as confirmation!”

Peggy stared at her, distraught, but could say nothing, suddenly the Head was standing between Peggy and the angry woman,

“That’s enough Con, I appreciate you are upset, you have good reason to be, but blaming Peggy is not helping.”

Con Mackenzie made to retort, but Miss Annersley’s expression stopped her, at that moment Nell Wilson placed an arm around her and Con Mackenzie buried her head in her oldest friend’s shoulder, crying.

“Look after her, Nell,” Hilda Annersley said gently, “Jock’s on his way, but until he gets here she’ll need you.”

Nell nodded and drew her friend through into her own Study.

Miss Annersley turned back to the policeman, “Mr Taylor, I think we’d all appreciate being told exactly what is being done to find my pupils and guard. Also is there anything that we might do to help?”

“That stands for me too, Mr Taylor,” Madge Russell had said very little so far, but had listened to all the conversation, “I am the Managing Director of the Real Chalet School Industries, I have a large number of resources I can call upon to help.”

The Chief Inspector looked around at the two women, and across at Peggy Burnett, he also noted his friend, John Coates. John had said very little but it was evident that he was seriously concerned about the disappearance of his son.

“Ladies, John, I have roused the forces of three Regions for this, at this moment there are a large number of police officers converging on the area, they are currently searching the area as best they can on the ground, we hope to get some police helicopters up in the air soon, although that depends on the weather…”

The policeman’s voice trailed off as there was a knock at the door, one of the police officers on guard looked in, “There’s a Major Stevens here, sir, says he may be able to help,”

“Let him in,” Chris Taylor said, surprised.

Major Stevens walked in and came up to stand next to Miss Annersley, the Head made introductions, “I believe you have already met Major Stevens, Chief Inspector? He is the father of Kelly,”

“Of course, he was also of help in our detention of Connor,” The policeman and soldier shook hands.

“I heard about what has happened, Chief Inspector,” Major Stevens began, “My daughter’s friends have been visiting her today, apparently one of them spoke to Evadne Van Alden just before she set out on the trip back to here yesterday evening. I came over to invite her and her mother over to see Kelly. Miss Derwent informed me of the fact she is missing. I wondered if there was anything I could do?”

“Thank you for the offer Major Stevens, but at the moment we are not asking for volunteers…”

The Major stopped him, “You misunderstand, I wasn’t volunteering to search myself, although I’m quite willing to do that as well.” he smiled, “I was on a two year secondment to Australia some five years ago. I have fairly extensive links with a number of officers in the Australian Army - and I can get in touch with them without having to go through numerous levels of bureaucracy and countless pieces of red tape! I thought you may appreciate the Army’s help in searching for these girls.”

Shane watched, helpless, as the gunman started to pull the trigger. His rising temperature made it all seem as though it were happening to someone else and he found it difficult to concentrate. There was a loud buzzing in his ears and he seemed to be seeing a bright white light…

The gunman looked up, out of the dark sky moved a number of objects, loud whirring from helicopter blades suddenly pierced the night and a searchlight seemed to pinpoint him in the centre of its beam. A voice, magnified, came to those on the ground.

“This is the army, you are surrounded, throw down your weapons and surrender!! You have only this one warning!”

At the same time, on both the gunmen, there appeared countless small red dots, the laser targeting dots of high powered weaponry. Both men looked up in confusion, dropping their weapons and releasing the girls. Evvy and Janetta ran over to hug Shane, he put his arms round them both.

From one of the helicopters, hovering at least thirty feet up in the air, a number of lines were thrown out and soldiers, fully armed, abseiled down to the ground. They quickly placed both gunmen under arrest.

“Who are they?” Janetta whispered to Shane, drawing back from these figures dressed all in black and with gas masks covering their faces.

Shane smiled slightly, “I think, Jan, they’re the good guys!”

A few minutes later, another, smaller helicopter landed and a number of people got out; bent low to keep away from the blades, the three watching figures didn’t recognise the four people who stepped off initially, two men and two women. The first man went over to the two captives and officially placed them under arrest - it was the Chief Inspector. Then the two girls caught sight of the two women and, releasing Shane, ran up to them. Janetta reached her mother first, Con, tears running down her cheeks, swept her daughter up in a bear hug.

Next to her Evvy came to a stop, “Mother hasn’t been found, has she?” she asked the woman in front of her.

Miss Annersley shook her head, “I’m sorry Evvy,” she said, holding her arms out to the girl.

Evvy ran into the Head’s embrace, “Doesn’t matter,” she said indistinctly, “You’ll do!”

Shane watched as the second man walked over to him, it was John Coates,

“You alright son?” John’s voice was cracked with emotion as he reached the younger man.

“I’ll survive, dad,” The two men hugged each other, Shane unable to stifle a cry due to the pain, John tried to release his son but Shane kept hold of him, hugging him harder despite the pain.

“I’m impressed dad, you got the Army out for us,”

“Friends in high places, lad, you know that,”

“Is that why you and the ladies are here then? Never knew of any Army outfit that would carry passengers!”

“That wasn’t me, Shane, that was the Boss!” He indicated Miss Annersley, “They couldn’t refuse her!”

John helped his son to stand and placed Shane’s arm across his shoulders. They started to walk toward the helicopter.

“So, dad, this job you’ve got for me, for my year out, security guard at a girls school,” Shane began, “Nice and easy, yeah?”

“Yeah son, no worries!”

#1393:  Author: XantheLocation: London/Cambridge PostPosted: Thu Mar 18, 2004 4:06 pm

Term ended on Friday... I came home and then I went to York for the weekend to train as a Peer Educator and got back on Sunday night and went to bed!

Then on Monday I went to the London Transport Museum with my best friend, and then to see the conversation between Phillip Pullman and the Archbishop of Canterbury at the National Theatre, had a meal out, had a meeting with my Queen's Guide mentor, got home and went to bed...

On Tuesday I did planning for Rangers, caught up on what my Brownies and Guides have been up to and wrote to assorted Guider-types.

Yesterday I arranged some more singing lessons, did some singing practice, created a display for Rangers and amended my plan for my Queen's Guide...

I have also read, washed, cooked, cleaned, shopped and done heaps of other things.

I have done PLENTY other than read drabbles and yibble.

Sorry for the delay - having real trouble connecting to the Net for more than 10 seconds!

The military helicopters flew everyone back to the Real Hospital, Shane Coates was immediately whisked inside and prepped for theatres. His father remained with him. Janetta and Evvy were both examined by one of the casualty doctors and given a clean bill of health. They were allowed to leave the hospital. Miss Annersley prevailed on the Army pilot to drop everyone off at the School, contacting the Gatehouse to warn them that a military helicopter would be landing within the grounds!

Sometime later, ensconced in the Head’s Study and with Miss Wilson and Miss Burnett in attendance, the party was joined by Chief Inspector Taylor - he had dropped his prisoners off at the nearby high security police station. He listened while the two girls told their story, asking questions at times and ensuring that the girls agreed on important points. After the interviews they also ate their first meal in 24 hours. When they had finished both girls were almost asleep.

After the policeman had finished, saying her would return in the morning, Miss Annersley spoke, “I think the best thing will be if they are allowed to return to their normal dormitories, in that way, hopefully, their ordeal will fade from their memories.”

“I wanted Janetta with me, Hilda,” Con Mackenzie said sharply.

“You may stay here overnight, Con,” the Head returned, “And join Janetta tomorrow morning, but she should be allowed back to her normal routine as quickly as possible, otherwise she will start to dwell on her ordeal.”

“There are likely to be a number of empty rooms over in the Middle Houses, Hilda,” put in Miss Wilson, “Perhaps Con, and Jock when he gets here, could spend the night there?”

The Head considered and agreed, “Con, take Janetta over to her dorm now, Nell, why don’t you take Evvy,” Miss Annersley gently shook Evvy awake, Evvy sat up, she had been resting her head on Miss Annersley’s shoulder. Miss Wilson lifted her to her feet and, placing an arm around her shoulder, guided her out of the Study. Con Mackenzie did the same with her daughter. The Study Door closed; inside the two remaining occupants looked at each other. Peggy Burnett was the first to speak,

“Hilda, I’m so sorry, Con’s right, I should never have waved them off without checking the validity of that message.”

Miss Annersley said nothing to begin with, instead rising and walking over to the window, she stared out into the inky blackness for a time.

“If you thought I was the one making the request, Peggy…” she began.

“But that’s just it,” Peggy returned, “even while I was speaking on the phone I thought there was something funny, I just couldn’t work out what it was!”

“Do you know now?”

Peggy nodded, “the voice had your speech patterns, your way of speaking, but the tone was not right. At the time I put it down to the bad line. I should have checked.”

“Yes, you should have,” agreed the Head, “Tell me, Peggy, if you were in my shoes, what would you do?”

The Games Mistress sat, looking down at the carpet for a short time, then she raised her head, “I’d dismiss Miss Burnett, or ask for her resignation!” she said quietly.

Hilda Annersley raised an eyebrow, “Sorry to disappoint you, Peggy, but I do not intend to do either of those actions.” She walked over to stand in front of her junior, “If you had deliberately or maliciously placed my pupils in danger, then you would already have been escorted from the premises. You made a genuine mistake, one that could not have been foreseen. Tell me, Peggy, will something like this ever occur again?”

“No!! Of course not!” Peggy’s reply was instant,

Miss Annersley smiled, “That’s all I need to know!” she smiled. “Now, we will have to ensure that all members of Staff are warned that they may receive false phone calls. Before the end of tomorrow I want you to have produced a protocol that all Staff will be able to follow, to ensure that your mistake is never repeated.”

Peggy stood up, nodding, “Of course Hilda,” she said quietly, she turned to leave.

“Peggy,” the soft voice stopped her, Miss Annersley walked over to stand in front of her, “I don’t want you to worry about this, understood?” The Head placed her arm around the younger mistress’ shoulders, “we all make mistakes, the one thing we must do is learn from them.”

Peggy smiled at her chief before leaving the room.

Thank you Lesley - glad it all ended without too many tears. Wondering how/why 'Rache(a)l is selecting her victims though - and who and what is going to come next.
So, as soon as you feel like telling us....

#1414:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2004 2:21 am

Little worried that Hilda was thought to be harsh with Con.

In the Middle Boarding House, Nell Wilson handed her charge over to one of the Housemistresses; while kissing her goodnight she told Evvy to sleep well and that they would see her in the morning. Evvy Van Alden, more than half asleep, smiled shyly and hugged the Deputy Head before following the Housemistress into her dormitory.

Nell joined Con Mackenzie, Con was sat beside her daughter’s bed, watching Janetta sleep. Nell placed an arm on her friend’s shoulder, “Come on, Con,” she said in a low voice, “ let the girl rest, you can’t stay here all night!”

She guided her friend out of the dormitory and into the room opposite, “this is empty at the moment, Con, you and Jock are welcome to stay here. As soon as Jock arrives I’ll point him in the right direction.”

“Thanks Nell,” Con said quietly, she looked across at her old friend and sighed, “I know why you’re here you know!”

Nell Wilson looked puzzled.

Con shook her head, impatiently, “I’m not stupid, Nell! Do you think I didn’t notice that Hilda remained with Peggy Burnett, while you were asked to accompany me? Do you really think that Hilda did that by chance?”

Nell looked across at her friend, “Hilda rarely does anything by chance, Con,” she said, “and yes, her intention here was probably to allow me to speak to you, while she hears from Peggy.”

“While she forgives Peggy and tells her it doesn’t matter, you mean!” Con’s voice was bitter, “you know what she’s like, Nell, she’ll not punish Peggy, she’ll do her famous ‘justice with mercy’ bit and just forgive her. Dammit I want more than that!”

“What more do you want, Con? Do you want Peggy to blame herself for the rest of her life? Don’t worry, she’ll be doing that anyway! Give her the sack, so she’s out of a job? What good will that do?” Nell walked over and grabbed hold of Con’s shoulders, looking her directly in the eye, “I know you’re angry, I am too, we’re alike there. But for God’s sake, Con, get angry at the right people. At those two men, who would have killed Janetta and the others. And, especially, get angry at the evil woman that set the whole thing up. Peggy made a mistake, yes, but it’s one that any of us could have made.”

Con broke away from her friend, shaking her head angrily, “It was a stupid mistake, Nell, it shouldn’t have happened, how can you say that anyone could have made it?”

“Con Stewart,” Nell Wilson’s tones stopped Con, “during your tenure as History Mistress at the Chalet School, can you tell me of any occasion when a request from Hilda wasn’t acted upon? Even before she became Senior Mistress, let alone Head?”

“That’s different…”

“No, it’s not. Peggy thought it was Hilda on the phone, it was a feasible request. She just acted without thinking. Con, she’s going to be punishing herself enough anyway, she doesn’t need you to add to the hurt.”

There was silence for a time, then, “It’s Mackenzie you know,” Con said quietly.

“Oh, sorry,”

“Yeah, well, you’re right. As Con Stewart, if I’d received a message like that from Hilda I’d have done what she asked.”

“Yes, so would I,” Nell replied.

“OK, you win! I’ll not blame Peggy. Don’t know how civil I can be…”

“Just so long as you stop shouting at her! Goodnight Con,”

“Goodnight Nell. You know, you and Hilda make a good team!”

Nell Wilson smiled, “Yes,” she agreed.

Go Nell! She's right, Con needs to direct her anger more though I can quite see why she didn't at first. Your daughter being kidnapped and shoy at doesn't exactly promote a clear mind.

Two favourite details ahd to be Nell calling her Con Stewart and then those last two lines Very Happy Thanks Lesley!

#1416:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2004 3:44 am

Nell's right. Both about the direction of Con's anger and that she would have done the same thing in Peggy's place - though I do understand Con's anger. Also to Con, Peggy is just a little kid (she left when Peggy was still a junior), so it might be hard for her to see Peggy as a responsible adult.

Thanks for that lovely bit, Lesley.

Whew! Catching up on several episodes. Grateful that everyone escaped more or less intact.

Can't imagine why Peggy would be considered much to blame. After all, in addition to the Hilda imitation there was Caller ID showing Hilda's number. Would have been shocked if Hilda fired her! But fortunately her response was as deft as usual Smile .

So, evidence mounts that the fiend who hired these thugs is a woman. But is she really a Rach(a)el? And what does she have against the school or its personnel?

Agree with everyone who got here before me. Great post. Lesley!

Whoever is behind this does know a lot about the school. Enough to know about missing old girls and the girls' names. And the call was made from within the school on Hilda's phone.

Can't help wondering if Lesley is scattering clues that we're not picking up and we'll all end up bashing our heads on our keyboards 'cos we didn't see them!

In the meantime, you know what we all want, don't you? Wink

Probably. She did that in other parts, didn't she?

#1421:  Author: Rachael PostPosted: Fri Mar 19, 2004 10:33 am

*agreeing with everyone else*

Thought Hilda handled Peggy perfectly -and it was a genunie mistake which Con will come to recognise in time ... I challenge anyone to defy Hilda, in person or on the phone!! Shocked
(think there could be a potential for a couple of amusing scenes along those lines though Very Happy )
Don't think she was too harsh with Con - it will be best for Janetta to get back into a routine and it's a resonable compromise to allow Con & Jock closer access to her ...

She did right in setting Nell up to talk to Con and that scene is just how it could have happened - love those final lines about the teamwork of H&N

However, have to admit that my mind is now straying to the well-being of Shane - how's his op. going Lesley?
*concerned*
Wink

Not sure I want to think about where all these clues could be leading.

Thanks Lesley, read the last two parts in one go. I think both Nell and Hilda acted perfectly, and as a perfect team. Con and Peggy's reactions were both understandable. Wonder who will cop the blame for this incident...who will the police think ,ade the phone call.

Children!! Play nicely.
Sorry for the delay - but I've finally managed to sort out what was wrong with my connection - much faster board for me now!

Back in the Head’s Study, Miss Annersley turned as a soft knock heralded Miss Wilson’s entry,

“Are the girls settled, Nell?”

“Fast asleep, the pair of them,” Miss Wilson walked over to stand next to her friend, they both gazed out of the window in silence for a time.

“How’s Con?” Miss Annersley asked at length,

“Still fuming,” Nell Wilson replied with a grin, “But she’s decided that maybe Peggy’s actions were understandable.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Thanks for that Nell,” she said softly. She continued staring out of the window. A short time later she spoke again, “Have you thought on the Chief Inspector’s words, Nell?”

“About the possibility that one of the Staff could be responsible? Yes, I’ve thought about it.” Nell Wilson’s voice was rather bleak, “It seems ridiculous and yet…”

“How else can the telephone calls be explained? And in particular, who, other than a member of Staff or a close associate, would know so much of our history that the telephone calls would sound genuine.” The Head finished smoothly, she looked across at her friend, “Nell, suppose it is one of the Staff? How on Earth can we have missed it? How could I miss it? After all, I’m supposed to be able to read everyone’s character - it was part of being the perfect Headmistress!”

Nell Wilson looked at her friend in some exasperation, “Hilda, we’re all human, even you! You're not the 'perfect Headmistress' - even when we were in the fictional world you made mistakes!”

Miss Annersley’s eyebrow arched at these words but Miss Wilson continued regardless, “I mean it Hilda, how long do you think I’d have remained friends with a perfect human being? It would drive me to drink within weeks!”

“Well…”

“Don’t even go there, Hilda!”

There was silence for a while, Nell Wilson reached across, putting her arm around her friend’s shoulders, “Hilda, whoever this person is, they are clever enough to subdue their personality, to allow the rest of us to see only part of them. And your character reading wasn’t infallible, was it? Remember Matey?”

The Head looked across affectionately at her friend, reaching up to lightly brush Nell’s hand, “Alright,” she said softly, “Point taken.”

The two women stood there for a short time, then Miss Annersley stirred, “we’d better be going,”

“To the hospital?”

“Yes, John will need our support.”

Thanks Lesley. Really enjoy these insights into Hilda and Nell's relationship, love the fact that Hilda still thinks of herself as the perfect headmistress too! Wondering about whoever it is with a vendetta against the school though, if they really are on the staff then I can see some more nasty things happening!

thank you, Lesley, three great episodes. Hoping for some more very soon, but it does look black for the school, though, especially if Caller ID can't be faked.

Please let us know how Shane is, very soon.

On their way out the two women were met by a desperately worried Jock Mackenzie being escorted into the School by one of the security guards. They were able to quickly relieve his fears before pointing him in the direction of the Middle Boarding House where both his daughter and his wife were resting. On reaching the Hospital they made their way to the waiting room, inside they found John Coates and his wife Sara.

“Any news John?” Miss Annersley asked,

John Coates smiled over at the Head, “Thanks for coming, Hilda, Nell, nothing yet, he’s still in theatre. They said they’d contact us as soon as they knew.”

Nell walked over to greet Sara Coates, “Are you alright Sara?” she asked,

Sara smiled, “I’m fine, Nell,” she said, “Just torn between worry for Shane and exasperation at John here - he didn’t tell me anything!”

“He probably didn’t want to worry you, Sara,” Hilda Annersley’s low voice cut across, “You’d be surprised how many people think that not telling you something important will mean that, when you eventually find out, it’ll make it easier!”

Nell Wilson grimaced across at her partner, “I can’t keep much secret from you!” she protested.

“No but you try, Nell!” The Head’s eyes were smiling.

Sara laughed slightly, “Well it doesn’t matter, Hilda, once we know that Shane is OK, I plan to have a few words with this husband of mine!”

In the background John Coates visibly winced!

A short time later the surgeon appeared, he was smiling, Shane Coates had come through the surgery without any ill effects and the bullet had been retrieved.

“He will take a little time to recover,” the surgeon continued, “Not least because the bullet was inside for more than 24 hours, but it will be a full recovery. He’s a very fit young man.”

May we see him, doctor?”

The surgeon assented and the four were taken down to the ITU, Shane had regained consciousness, but was attached to a ventilator to assist his breathing. He managed to wave slightly at his visitors. Hilda drew John to one side,

“We’ll not stay, John, just needed to know that he’d come through surgery without any problems. Take as much time off as you need. I don’t expect to see you back on duty for the next week!”

John Coates smiled, “Thanks for that Hilda, I’ll keep you updated. Please come and visit Shane again - I know he’ll appreciate it.”

A short time later the two friends left, as it was late - almost midnight - they just quickly looked in on Kelly Stevens, who was sleeping peacefully, before making their way back to the School. Before they retired for the night they first went to the Staff Room to update everyone on the condition of the three people involved. Hilda Annersley also warned everyone that it was likely there would be a large police presence and a great deal of official questioning on the morrow.

Once over in their cottage, Hilda Annersley contacted Madge Russell to update her, while Nell Wilson spoke to Joey Maynard. Evvy Van Alden was one of only 26 girls at the Real Chalet School that had not, yet, had an adoptive family allocated. Chiefly because everyone still held out some hope that her mother would be traced. Consequently, at the moment, Evvy Van Alden’s care and welfare was a joint responsibility between the School and the Permanent Board Member responsible for allocating adoptees.

By the time these calls were complete it was well after midnight, Nell Wilson looked across at the clock in amazement,

“Less than 24 hours ago, Hilda, I’d just socked you on the jaw!”

Hilda appeared from the kitchen carrying two mugs of coffee, “Not a good thing to remind me of that, Nell!” she grinned, “Not when I’m carrying boiling water, well coffee!”

The pair sat down in silence, “So we’ve got the Police investigation tomorrow then, Hilda?”

“Yes, something to look forward to!”

Next bit!

The following morning, early, Miss Annersley addressed her Staff,

“Now, it is still Half Term, and, as far as possible, we want the girls to enjoy themselves. I do not want any news of the events of yesterday to be broadcast.”

“What about Evvy and Janetta?” This from Rosalind Moore, Evvy’s form mistress.

“They have been told to say nothing of what happened to them,” the Head returned, “And, in any case, are going out with Janetta’s parents for the day.” She looked across at her partner.

Miss Wilson continued, “The Police will be here within the hour and will want to interview all those present on Friday evening. Those of you that had booked today as a day off will have to forfeit the day, I’m afraid, you will have additional time off later in the term to make up.”

“The girls are being taken on a pony trek today,” Miss Annersley said, “As they are taking a picnic lunch it will mean they will away for most of the day. Those of the Staff who were not here on Friday evening will go along with them.”

When the police arrived a number of things were arranged. Firstly they completely took over the Head’s Study, preventing anyone, Miss Annersley included, from entering, while their SOC technicians thoroughly searched the room. Also taken over was Miss Wilson’s Study, as a possible means of egress to the Head’s. Chief Inspector Taylor set up his Incident Room in the large Conference Room at the top of the main School building, he also has a number of other rooms set aside as Interview Rooms.

The first people to be interviewed were the Heads themselves, Chris Taylor spoke to Miss Annersley first,

“You understand, ma’am, that we must ask everyone these questions?”

“Of course, Chief Inspector, I have no objection.” The Head replied smoothly.

“Very well, we’re talking about Friday evening, there were two telephone calls made, from the phone in your office, one at five minutes past eight in the evening, and one at ten minutes to eleven. Can you remember what you were doing at both of those times?”

Miss Annersley thought for a moment, “At eight fifteen pm I was awaiting the start of the film, ‘Mona Lisa Smile‘, in the large lecture theatre directly beneath us. Before that I had taken part, for a short time, in one of the on-line games,” She smiled, “I was a cleric in a Dungeons and Dragons game - I would have liked to try being a warrior but everyone else insisted I play the part of a nun!”

“I see, and you went straight from there to the theatre?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “No, I managed to get myself killed - very stupidly - about five to eight. There wasn’t time for me to start a new character again, so I just wandered slowly over to the lecture theatre.”

“Did anyone see you?”

“I met up with Nell Wilson, Ruth Derwent and Madge Russell at ten past eight - just outside the theatre, we sat and watched the film together.”

“An unusual film for schoolgirls?”

Miss Annersley laughed, “Hardly, a number of Staff and students of this School have a special affinity to the early 1950’s, and I believe the film has a pertinent message for all women. Besides, the other film being shown was ‘Finding Nemo’ and tonight the plan is to show the entire Alien series!”

“I see,” the policeman smiled, “to continue, what about the time of the second phone call?”

“Like most of the Staff I was in the Staff Room just after eleven,” Miss Annersley replied, “Before that, along with my Deputy Head, Miss Wilson, I was making rounds of the boarding houses, seeing the girls settled. We appeared in the Staff Room a little after eleven, shortly before the Senior Housemistress.”

“You made these rounds together?”

“No, we split up, so we could cover all the room faster.”

“I see,” the Chief Inspector sat back in his chair and regarded the woman opposite, “You do realise, Miss Annersley, from what you’ve told me, you do not have an alibi for either of the times stated?”

Miss Annersley raised an eyebrow, “I was not aware that I would require one, Chief Inspector!”

So Hilda herself is going to be under suspicion this time is she? I somehow fancy that he investigators are in for a hard time. Surely the culprit must be someone who was involved in the early days of the school though? All the victims of her schemes (Bill, Con, Evvy's mother) were around at that time.
Thanks for posting lots more lovely drabble today Lesley, of course, I'm still looking forward to seeing lots more tomorrow, of course.

Whilst it's true she has no alibi I'm imagining there might be quite a few staff without them, not least Nell. I hope this investigator is sensible enough to know not to try and blame Hilda!

Just caught up! There'll be a lot of people without alibis so this will get quite complicated. More, please Lesley. I'll need a dose today as well Wink

#1463:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2004 11:29 am

Here you go then, PatMac!

Once the stately Headmistress had left the room the Chief Inspector looked over at his companion, “What do you think?” he asked.

The tall sergeant shrugged, “Not the first time someone’s tried a double bluff on us,” he said, “maybe we need to investigate her background a little.”

“Perhaps, let’s get her Deputy in next, perhaps she can tell us more.”

Miss Wilson’s whereabouts during the Friday evening were easier to pinpoint,

“From seven fifteen until eight o’clock I was with Madge Russell in the observation room, watching some of the girls playing Lazer Wars, we then walked over to catch the film, met up with Ruth Derwent and the Head just outside the theatre.”

“I see, and later?”

“I did the rounds, along with Hilda, saying goodnight to the girls,”

“You were together?”

“No, we’d split up, but I was a little delayed as some of the Middles decided to have a pillow fight!” Miss Wilson grinned, “when I appeared I think they expected a lecture - instead I joined in! Well, it is Half Term after all!”

The Chief Inspector bit back a grin, “I see, do you know what time that was?”

“Near enough, Jennie, the Senior Housemistress appeared and told me to disappear! She said that ten to eleven was way too late for pillow fights!”

“Thank you Miss Wilson!”

Once the Deputy Head had left the two policemen conferred once more, “Well that seems to put her in the clear,” the Chief Inspector said,

“Yes sir, unless we’re dealing with more than one culprit!”

“Don’t even think that Mike! This is complicated enough already. Anyway it couldn’t have been - Madge Russell left the grounds at just after ten pm, the possible security breach was after twelve.”

The interviews continued, with some people they were able to produce alibis for both the times, however due to the nature of the evening there were a great many who could not. By the end of the morning the sergeant had a list, he read it out for the Chief Inspector.

“Right, we have interviewed all the members of Staff, including Housemistresses, who were present on Friday night. Also included are the visitors and guests around that evening. There were a total of 27, and of them nearly half, 13, were unable to give alibis for the pertinent times.

Hilda Annersley
Julie Berne
Katherine Bruce
Kathie Ferrars
Rachel Gray
Vikki Kirkum
Janet McRae
Rosalind Moore
Celia Oldroyd
Rachael Pelter
Kathie Robertson
Rachel Trent
Nancy Wilmot”

The sergeant looked up, “that’s three of the five Rach(a)els still under suspicion,”

“Hmmm, but one of those is only cleared because it would be physically impossible for her to have reached the Study in time. I wonder?”

“What, sir?”

“Whether the whole Rach(a)el thing is as important as we think? Whoever this woman is, she has gone to great lengths to conceal her identity, that girl Kelly never met her, Connor says he only spoke to her on the telephone and once, fleetingly, in a car park in England, when she was so muffled up it could be anyone - and she was seated so he couldn’t judge her height.”

“So he says,”

“Yes, I appreciate we may not have the full story from him. But the two gunmen tell a similar story, spoke to a woman on the telephone, never seen her. With all this effort at ensuring no one knows her identity - then she lets slip her name to the girl, Kelly?”

“You don’t think that is her name then?”

“Let’s just say I’m keeping an open mind. At the moment we’ve at least reduced our surfeit of Rach(a)els from five to three.”

A little more to keep you going!

By lunchtime the police had finished examining the Head’s Study and completed their initial interviews. The Chief Inspector spoke to Miss Annersley just before the midday meal,

“As far as your Study is concerned, the SOC people have lifted a large number of different prints, but that’s only to be expected considering the room itself. We will need to identify the prints as soon as possible so that they can be eliminated from the equation. It will mean taking the prints of all Staff.”

“I see,” Miss Annersley replied, “When do you wish to do that?”

The man considered, “I think tomorrow morning if that’s suitable, Miss Annersley, we’ll need to take the prints of all who may have been in your Study since the last time it was dusted.”

The Head thought for a moment, “That would be Thursday morning,” she said, “It’s normally done on a daily basis, but, with it being Half Term, it’s unlikely that it was done on Friday - I will confirm that with the Domestic Bursar however.”

“Excellent, then if you can provide a list of all those, to your knowledge, who have been in your Study from then?”

“Of course, Chief Inspector,” Miss Annersley paused, “May I ask if you are any closer to finding the culprit?”

“Not yet, ma’am, we have a number of enquiries to make first.”

The rest of Half Term went fairly smoothly. The police arrived on the Monday to take the fingerprints of all Staff and domestic personnel, but otherwise did not resume questioning of anyone. In discussions between Staff, the number of those without alibis became known and remarked upon, however no one could agree on whether or not the actual culprit would have arranged beforehand to have an alibi anyway.

Janetta and Evvy rejoined their classmates on the Monday having spent a relaxing day out with Janetta’s parents on Sunday. Although both of them were a little pale, they were able to fully join in all the activities. They were also able to visit Shane in hospital late Sunday evening once he had been moved to an ordinary ward.

'Nother bit!

Late on the Monday evening, the sergeant made his way up to the Chief Inspector’s officer. He found him, in conference, with one of the SOC technicians.

“Oh Mike, you have some news for me?”

“Yes sir, just to let you know that we’ve taken the fingerprints of all the Staff at the Real Chalet School, the boys are in the process of checking them now, but I can tell you that the only set of prints on the phone are those of the Head herself!”

“Which is exactly as it should be,” Chris Taylor said glumly, “Mike, we may have further problems, this is Stan Dunn, he’s one of the SOC techs. He has some, unusual, news.”

The sergeant sat in one of the chairs opposite and listened to the man,

“Well it’s as I said earlier,” Stan began, “When checking out the phone in the Study, we also checked the phone network itself - normal procedure. We found it to be a very modern exchange - as it should be, considering the building is pretty new.”

“So?”

“Well there was an anomaly, attached to the phone in the Head’s Study. An additional set of wires that, at first, did not seem to have any purpose. One of my lads has a lot of expertise with phone systems and I put him onto it. He discovered that an entire additional system has been fitted which will allow someone to make a call from elsewhere on the School network, but for the call to appear to be from the Head’s phone!”

“You mean whoever it was didn’t have to go to the Study to make the call?”

“Precisely, all they needed to do was make the calls through the same exchange - at the School,” Chris Taylor replied, “And there’s more, Stan here says that the calls could have been timed. That they could have been made earlier and just set to go out at those times!”

“But surely that woman, what’s her name, Burnett - surely she would have noticed if the call was a recorded one?”

Taylor nodded, “she did notice, don’t you remember? I’ve got the transcript of our interview with her here,” he read from some sheets,

“Taylor - So you felt at the time that the calls were genuine?

Burnett - At the time, yes, even though there were things wrong, I put them down to the bad line.

Taylor - Things? What things?

Burnett - Well I’ve known Hilda Annersley a long time, and although the person speaking had her speech patterns, the voice was not the right tone. Hilda’s voice is very deep, she has a lovely speaking voice, but on those calls it sounded odd. (subject laughed) But I didn’t think anything more of it, or the fact that, for Hilda, she was positively abrupt.

Taylor - What do you mean abrupt?

Burnett - Oh only that she didn’t even listen to what I said before going on to her next sentence. Now I think on it, it was almost as though she were just reciting her lines.”

Taylor looked over at his sergeant, “You see, she did notice, but didn’t realise it."

The sergeant shook his head, “But if this is true sir, it means that we’re back to square one, it could have been anyone.”

“Worse than that, we’ve got a lot more suspects to add, anyone that was at the School that day - Stan says it couldn’t have been set the day before - is now suspect!”

Everyone is suspect! Twisted Evil

Janet, regular CBB atendance is most advisable, otherwise we find ourselves starring in all sorts of drabbles.

In 'Holocaust' RTW had me lurking by the side of the A1. I never lurk there, I've got lots of lurking places, but not next to the A1.

At least that let's Hilda off the hook but the thought that it could be ANYONE Shocked

It could even be someone who has not been mentioned yet? *crosses through list of suspects, tears paper into small pieces, throws bits into the air in disgust* Back to waiting for the next post Sad

Is it good or bad that thye've widened the number of suspects. I suppose it takes the spotlight off that list but if they start checking backgrounds now they're going to find some VERY strange things!

Thanks for all that Lesley, relieved that everyone is now a suspect, although this will make the culprit much more difficult to trace of course. And I'm sure she must have more plans afoot.

On the Tuesday the girls away camping and those who had gone home for Half Term, returned and the Real Chalet School attempted to return to normal. It was, however, an extremely difficult thing for some to do, in particular most of the Staff. The previous problem, involving the bomb in the Chemistry lab, had been bad enough, after all one of the pupils had nearly died, and one of the Staff had been under suspicion for almost two weeks. This latest episode though, appeared to implicate almost everyone, all the Staff felt they were under suspicion and they were some tense conversations in the Staff Room.

Later in the week the Chief Inspector met with Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson to update them on the investigation, his information about the telephone system was greeted with some dismay,

“At least it stopped you being their number one suspect, Hilda,” Miss Wilson remarked, once the policeman had left.

“Perhaps, Nell, but instead it’s thrown the possibility back to any of the Staff. Look at the people that have been attacked, as well. In one respect it appears to be mainly Forth Formers, Kelly, Evvy and Janetta, but with you added.”

“Agreed, but I think it’s possible that Evvy and Janetta might have been targeted because of their mothers, then you’d have Con, myself and Corney Flower.”

“But then why Kelly Stevens?”

“True, Hilda, it doesn’t make sense, maybe the idea is to tarnish the School? After all, we’ve figured in the news recently and it wasn’t good publicity!”

Miss Annersley nodded, the Real Chalet School had featured in a current affairs programme about random gun violence - somehow the story of the attack on Shane, Evvy and Janetta had leaked out. “It’s already had a detrimental effect,” she said, “I’ve received four letters so far this week, from parents that had already entered their daughters in the School from January, now withdrawing them. It’s likely that’s only the tip of the iceberg.”

“It hasn’t been any of the CBBers has it?” Miss Wilson looked concerned.

“No, these are parents with no knowledge of our previous history.” Miss Annersley paused, worried, before continuing, “But I wouldn’t feel too good about the CBBers, Nell. It’s possible that one of them is the culprit!”

“Oh surely not, Hilda, they love the School!”

“Well it’s either that, or it’s one of the original staff, and that’s no more palatable!”

The two women sat in silence in the Head’s Study for a time, eventually Nell Wilson stirred, “Hilda, what about this investigation? I mean exactly how well will any of our backgrounds stand up to a full blown police investigation?”

Hilda Annersley shook her head, “I don’t know Nell, just about the only thing in our favour is that we’re on the other side of the world...”

“Yes, but the police are treating this as attempted murder, they likely to be thorough, and there’s no reason to think they’d be any less professional than any other police force!”

“I know, and it may well harm their search for the real culprit if they start getting bogged down in exactly why so many of us seem to have appeared out of thin air!” The Head smiled, “we’ll just have to hope that the false identities will hold!”
