*Basking in warm glow because Lesley has posted more Surfeit!*

Hilda is so wise and she wears her wisdom so gently. She really is the sort of friend you want at your side. I love the way they both prop each other up whenever the other needs help and support. And beyond that they both know the staff is there, willing them on through it. I love the way you're writing this, Lesley.

Depends on whether your objective was to blow things up or simply to discredit the CS.

Glad to see Nell & Hilda holding up so well. Thanks, Lesley.

(This is so strange. I posted this at 11:04 PM, really. I know because I kept a copy, trying to keep track of what I've caught up on. And now it's gone. Feeling ostracized.)

No more?! What can Lesley be thinking of?!!!!

#515:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:54 pm

Actually Lesley was thinking of going to bed! But she wrote this first!

The next morning saw the Head over at the School meeting with the Senior Mistress.

“I’ll let you know how the surgery goes, Ruth, now are you sure you don’t mind covering this weekend?”

“Of course not, Hilda, you can’t be expected to cover all the weekends you know!” Ruth Derwent smiled slightly, her voice lowered as she asked, “how’s Nell?”

“I think she’s alright at the moment Ruth,” Miss Annersley smiled, “she did at least manage to sleep a little, from what I could tell. This has hit her hard though.”

“Well just tell her that all the Staff support her, there’s no way she could have been responsible for that explosion.”

Moving across the School Grounds Miss Annersley stopped on hearing her name being called. She looked back to see Louise Chad and Alison Martin running after her,

“What is it, girls?” she asked.

“Only that we wanted to ask how Miss Wilson is,” replied Alison, “Are her burns healing OK?”

The Head nodded, smiling,” I think she still has some pain, but the burns are healing,”

“Oh good,” this from Louise, “Any idea how long she’ll be off-sick?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “I cannot say at the moment, it may be some time,”

Both the Head Girl and Second Prefect looked a little downcast at this, then Louise brightened and said, “But we could visit, couldn’t we? I mean she’s not got anything infectious has she?”

“I’m not sure…” Miss Annersley stopped, suddenly realising that all the Prefects were now 18 years old, “Yes, you may visit,” she said, “In fact why don’t you all come over for the afternoon tomorrow? If it’s fine we could have a barbeque - if you don’t mind cooking!”

“Excellent!” Alison grinned, “We’ll bring the food, Miss Annersley, we’re going into town later.” The two girls moved off.

The Head called Louise back, “Louise, are you sleeping well now?” she asked quietly,

Louise Chad blushed slightly, “Most of the time, Miss Annersley, I haven’t had any nightmares for a couple of weeks now.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “It will get better,” she said softly, “I promise,”

Louise smiled, “What about you, Miss Annersley? I mean yesterday was the anniversary…” she stopped.

The Head smiled, “Not a problem, my dear, but thank you for asking. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Later that day Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson drove into the hospital grounds. They had already been along to a solicitors and bank to sign some documents approving transfer of some of their funds and taking possession of the deeds of the cottage. As the Head parked the car Miss Wilson looked across,

“I’ll get a cab back home, Hilda. You’ll probably be here sometime and will want the car when you get out.”

Miss Annersley looked puzzled, “Aren’t you coming in, Nell? I would have thought you’d want to see how Kelly was getting on, you visited her a number of times when an in-patient yourself.”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “Surely my suspension bans me from the hospital too?” she said softly, her hurt reflected in her eyes.

Miss Annersley thought for a minute then reached into her jacket, “I was going to give you this yesterday,” she said, “but there never seemed a good time! It’s the letter confirming your suspension. She quickly checked the contents and smiled. Passing it across to her partner she said, “read the top part, read it out loud.”

Miss Wilson looked somewhat mystified but obeyed, “Dear Miss Wilson, This letter is to confirm your suspension, on full pay, from the Real Chalet School, its buildings and grounds, until such a time as the current investigation into alleged gross misconduct is complete. In the event that…” she stopped as her friend shook her head impatiently,

“It only covers the School, Nell, nowhere else, so you may visit the Real Hospital!” she smiled.

Inside the two women made their way to intensive care, Kelly had not yet been taken to theatres and the surgeon was with her, assessing the extent of the damage he was about to repair. He recognised Miss Annersley and looked curiously at Miss Wilson, obviously recognising the type of injuries on her arms and hands. When told of Miss Wilson’s identity he exclaimed, “Of course, the lady who beat out the flames on this little one’s chest and arms! The reason for your own injuries!”

Miss Annersley turned in astonishment, “You did that?”

Miss Wilson flushed slightly, “She was on fire, Hilda, I had to!”

The Head laughed, “Nell, you’re the only person I know who can sound apologetic about saving someone’s life!”

Her friend smiled slightly in return.

Kelly had been in theatre about 90 minutes when two more people joined the Heads in the waiting room. John Coates walked in with a tall, muscular man with close cropped brown hair and blue eyes. These eyes held some anguish as he walked in.

“Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson,” John Coates began, “this is Major Geoff Stevens.”

The Head rose and held out her hand, “Major Stevens, I’m Hilda Annersley, the Headmistress, we’ve spoken on the telephone quite a lot over the last week. This is my Deputy Head, Miss Wilson.”

The major shook hands almost mechanically before speaking, “My Kelly? Where is she?”

“Still in surgery, Major,” the Head’s voice projected calm and hope, “I’m sure the surgeon will want to speak to you as soon as the operation is over. He seemed very hopeful of a full recovery.” Miss Annersley looked across at the man then guided him to a chair. Miss Wilson poured a coffee from the machine in the corner of the waiting room and handed it across.

As he took the cup, the major’s eyes alighted on the dressings on Miss Wilson’s hands and arms, “Miss Wilson? You were the one who rescued Kelly?” His voice was low and quiet.

“I-I am the Chemistry Mistress, Major Stevens,” Nell Wilson said softly, “your daughter was in my class when the explosion occurred. I’m so sorry.”

“You saved Kelly’s life, Miss Wilson,” Major Stevens voice seemed to be gathering strength as he drank the coffee, “You have done nothing that requires an apology.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that!” The new voice came from the doorway, the four inside the room turned to look, Tony Connor, the Fire Investigation officer, stood there.

Next bit!

The Major looked across sharply, “Explain yourself!” he ordered, his rank and profession manifesting themselves for the first time.

Mr Connor stepped forward, his hand outstretched, “My name is Tony Connor, Major Stevens, I am currently investigating the cause of the explosion and fire that injured your daughter. I learned of your arrival here in Australia and felt I must speak to you urgently, I should like to interview your daughter once she regains consciousness, in your presence of course.”

Major Stevens shook the hand; “I have no objection to that Mr Connor, once Kelly is well enough, but you didn’t answer my question, why did you make that comment about Miss Wilson?”

The Investigator smiled and glanced over at Miss Wilson, “Preliminary results suggest that the explosion was either a device, or due to the chemicals in the lab. Either way, the circumstantial evidence implicates the Chemistry Mistress. Whether as a deliberate act or a significant error hasn’t been established, but it was well known that she and your daughter did not ‘get along’.

The Security Chief interrupted here, “hearsay, you cannot use that, Connor.”

“And what would you know about it?” Mr Connor sounded sceptical.

Mr Coates smiled, “After more than 25 years in the force, reaching the rank of Chief Inspector, I think I can claim a little knowledge.” The Security Chief stared across at the other man, “Or did you think you were the only one here with knowledge of how to conduct an investigation?”

Mr Connor looked somewhat shocked at the revelation, he turned back to the Major, “I just felt that you needed to know what was going on here, sir,” he said stiffly. “Normally I would expect the Headmistress here to tell you the whole story, but as it’s her friend that’s implicated I couldn’t rely on her to do so!”

Miss Annersley had remained silent until now, at this speech however she spoke, “Not just hearsay, Mr Connor, but slander! And in front of witnesses!” The Head moved to stand directly in front of the man, “I have no idea why you are doing this,” she continued softly, “but your presence here is totally inappropriate. I think you should leave.”

“This is not the School, Miss Annersley, you have no authority here.” The Investigator sounded smug.

“Oh yes she does!” A soft voice from behind him replied, everyone turned to see Dr Venables, the Medical Director, standing there. “Miss Annersley is one of the four permanent Directors on the Board, and as such is well qualified to issue commands for this hospital.” She regarded the man with the same degree of interest as a scientist would view a new type of parasite. She then continued, “besides, she and Miss Wilson are held in such high esteem that either of them could issue any order and it would be obeyed.” The doctor stared at the Investigator until he swore and turned, storming out of the room.

Dr Venables came into the room, “Major Stevens? I’m Dr Venables, the Medical Director. I thought you’d be pleased to know that Kelly is out of Theatres now, she’s in Recovery. The operation went well and the surgeon will be up to speak to you soon.”

“Thank you doctor,” the Major’s voice was quiet, he had barely moved or said anything since the Fire Inspector’s announcement. He was staring across at Miss Wilson. “I should like to speak to Miss Wilson alone,” he said.

#554:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 10:51 pm

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend, Nell Wilson was rather pale but determined, and she nodded to indicate that the Head should leave. Miss Annersley motioned that Dr Venables and John Coates should precede her. At the door she turned and glanced back, her expression offering support to her friend, before exiting the room and quietly closing the door.

Inside there was silence for a while, the Major was standing across the room from Miss Wilson, his gaze now moved to stare at the coffee machine. Miss Wilson waited. She had risen on the Fire Inspector’s entrance and now stood leaning against the wall.

Finally the Major spoke, “Miss Wilson, are you responsible for my daughter’s injuries?” The voice was quiet and calm, yet Miss Wilson was able to see that the Major had to exert a great deal of force to control his temper.

“Major Stevens I swear to you, I am not responsible for any bomb or other device, there is no conceivable way that I would deliberately hurt one of my pupils.” The Deputy Head’s voice, although still rather harsh from her injuries, projected sincerity.

The man nodded slightly, continuing to hold her gaze. “Could the explosion have occurred due to any negligence or omission on your part?”

Nell Wilson flushed slightly with anger at the question, she then looked down at the floor for some time, closing her eyes as though in pain. She took a deep breath then raised her head to gaze directly back at the Major, “I don’t know,” she admitted softly, “I’ve gone over it again and again, I can’t think of anything that I did, or omitted to do, that would cause such an explosion. But I can’t be certain. I’m sorry Maj…”

“If you are not responsible for my daughter’s injuries, Miss Wilson, then you have no need to apologise,” the man interrupted. “On the other hand,” he continued softly, “if you are responsible, no apology that you make will in any way negate your act.”

He turned away abruptly to pace up and down the length of the waiting room a few times before coming back to stand in front of the woman again.

“Thank you for your honesty, Miss Wilson,” he said, “I will await the report with interest,” his eyes glistened. “My daughter is my only family, my wife, her mother, died in an accident some eight years ago. I didn’t think that anything could ever again make me feel so murderous as when my wife died. Whoever was responsible for the injuries to Kelly should expect no mercy from me. And I doubt that I will be able to leave justice to the courts.”

“I can understand that, Major Stevens,” Miss Wilson’s voice was soft, “and if it turns out that I was responsible, I would welcome your justice.”

The man nodded abruptly before turning away, “We’d better call your friends back in,” he said harshly, “before they think I’ve attacked you.”

Lesley, that was wonderful (though I expect nothing less) The Major is being very fair, under the circumstances he could hardly have been blamed if he had taken this Tony ******** words on board.
I know that Bill couldn't have been responsible, I just wish that she was so certain.
John Coates seems to be ruling himself out of the running for chief suspect with his words to the fire investigator, but it could all be a bluff I suppose.....

Wonderful to see both Daisy and this Coates chap stand up to the evil investigator. Wish we knew wether or not John Coates was for real or not. Think the major was very understandable and reasonably just in his actions, he seems to be a very independant and collected person.

There's so much noise round here a person can't get to sleep! Oh well - have this!

Back at the Real Chalet School, Miss Derwent was receiving a visitor,

“I’m very sorry, Mrs Williams, that neither our Headmistress or Deputy Head are available at the moment,” she said, while ushering the visitor into the Head’s Study. “They are both at the nearby hospital visiting a pupil of ours. They may be some time.” It was none of Ruth’s intention to inform this woman of their current problems so she kept the information deliberately vague.

The two settled themselves at the table in Miss Annersley’s office, after a short time Clare appeared with two mugs of coffee, after sipping her drink the woman turned to the Senior Mistress, “I’ll not keep you, Miss Derwent, but perhaps you could pass this information onto your Headmistress as soon as she returns?”

Miss Derwent nodded and then listened in dismay as the woman explained the reason for her being there. Some time later, after she had said goodbye to the woman, she sat in the Head’s Study, thinking, a short time later, in response to a call to the Staff Room, Miss Moore, Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars joined her. She informed then of what the woman had said.

Nancy Wilmot was the first to react, “A Child Social Worker? What the Hell is that?”

“A Social Worker with special responsibility for children, apparently,” Ruth Derwent replied.

“But what’s a Social Worker?” Kathie Ferrars asked, thereby earning undying gratitude from Rosalind Moore, about to ask the same question.

“I looked it up, apparently it’s a profession working with the disadvantaged.” Ruth replied.

Nancy laughed, “Well that’s hardly us then, is it? We work with the advantaged!”

Ruth shook her head, “Not according to this woman, the recent explosion and investigation have raised the possibility that someone is attacking children. Sue Williams was visiting today to ensure that our children were kept away from the person currently considered to be the prime suspect!”

“You mean Nell?” Rosalind’s face was aghast and she stared at her friend in disbelief.

Ruth nodded grimly, “Her office received a phone call first thing this morning from some man, saying that we were placing the children here at risk by allowing Nell to remain on site.”

“She didn’t say Nell had to leave, did she?” Kathie asked.

Ruth shook her head, “No, I pointed out that the cottages were considered off limits for the students, and told her of Nell’s suspension. That seemed to placate her for now, but she said she’d be reviewing the situation on a very frequent basis.”

“And I suppose you’ll have to let Hilda know all of this, when she returns,” this from Nancy, “I doubt she’ll want Nell told.”

“She may have to tell her,” Ruth Derwent said bleakly, “Because the Prefects will not be able to go over there tomorrow. Alison told me I’d be losing my entire form tomorrow afternoon - Nell’s sure to wonder why they suddenly don’t arrive.”

Rosalind shook her head, “I think you’re worrying unnecessarily, Ruth,” she said thoughtfully, “Aren’t all the Prefects 18 now? In that case they’re classed as adults, they’re not classed as children.”

“Hadn’t thought of that,” her friend replied, “Well at least there will be some good news for the Head.”

Here it is! (Oh and love the idea of slapping people with a piranha!)

In the hospital Miss Annersley and Mr Coates had rejoined the party in the waiting room. Dr Venables had disappeared saying that she would let Major Stevens know immediately that Kelly was on her way back to the Intensive Care ward. Miss Annersley sat with her friend on the sofa while the two men stood by the window. After some time Major Kelly became aware of the Security Chief’s gaze upon him and turned,

“Is there a problem, Mr Coates?” he asked.

John Coates shrugged slightly, “As I said earlier, I was in the Police for a long time, I’m fairly experienced at how men react to different stresses,”

“You’re wondering how I can be so calm about the possibility that Miss Wilson is responsible for my daughter’s injuries?”

At the words both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked over, interested. John Coates nodded, “I am, I would have expected you to be far more inflammatory,”

Major Stevens smiled tiredly, “When I was a very young Second Lieutenant, only been in the army for a few years, I took part in a big exercise over in Germany, West Germany at the time. During that exercise, there was an incident with some live ammunition, and two young squaddies were killed. As the officer commanding, my Captain, a man I greatly admired and considered my role model, was held responsible and arraigned for General Court Martial. There were three months between the time of the incident and the trial.” The man stopped for a time, remembering,

“In those three months, when he had to live with those suspicions every day, where at least half of his ‘so-called’ friends melted away, afraid that his disgrace would impact badly on their careers, I watched him change from the confident, alert man I knew, into a cowering apology for a man. Someone who was afraid to do anything to upset his fellows. At the court martial he was not only exonerated from all blame, but praised for his actions in ensuring that other members of the squad were saved. It came too late. He bought himself out of the army a month later, to this day he has never taken a job where he will be responsible for the safety of anyone other than himself.”

The Major turned to look across at Miss Wilson, “I swore to myself then, that I would never be responsible for anyone having to go through what he endured. As I said to Miss Wilson earlier, I’ll wait for the report.” He turned back to stare out of the window.

A short time later the surgeon appeared and Major Stevens spoke to him for a time before going to visit his daughter. Miss Annersley joined him, but Miss Wilson said she’d stay in the waiting room, John Coates stayed with her. They waited in silence for some time, occasionally passing remarks about the weather. Eventually the Security Chief sat on the sofa next to Nell Wilson.

“Nell,” he said gently, “I’ve figured out what Connor is doing. I think you may find it useful.”

What’s he doing, John? Apart from finding salt to rub into my every wound.” Miss Wilson’s tones were somewhat bitter.

“He’s doing this deliberately,” came the reply, “It was a popular technique in some forces while I was in the Police. If a detective knew who the culprit was, especially if it were a serious crime, but had no proof, they pile pressure on the man or woman. Hoping it would cause them to crack, sometimes it would work too, but it was never a technique I was happy with.”

Why not? Seems like it would work, I can attest to its effectiveness!” Miss Wilson smiled grimly.

“Because if the copper had the wrong man, it could lead to false confessions and innocent people could suffer.” John Coates responded. He placed a hand on Nell’s shoulder, “don’t let him beat you, Nell, if he’s doing the rest of his job half as effectively as this, he’ll uncover the proof that you are innocent any day now.”

“Do you really think he’s even bothering to look?” the soft voice came from the doorway, Miss Annersley entered the room. “I’m serious, John, do you think he’s looking at the evidence at all, because from the very first he seemed determined to blame Nell.” The Head smiled at her friend before turning back to John Coates to await a reply.

The Security Chief frowned, considering the question, “It hadn’t occurred to me before, Hilda,” he said slowly, “But you’re right, there is reason to believe he’s just fixated on Nell and isn’t investigating properly. I call up a few of my old friends, the ones still in the force. See if they can come up with anything.” He smiled at both women before disappearing out the door.

Here we go!

The news about Kelly was encouraging; the surgeon had been able to inform both Major Stevens and the Head that the last operation had been a complete success. There was every hope that Kelly would make a full recovery and that the amount of skin grafting required was far less than originally estimated.

“And that’s down to you, Nell,” Miss Annersley stressed as the pair of them drove home, “the surgeon made the point a number of times to Major Stevens that had it not been for you rescuing Kelly in the first place, and then, while waiting for rescue yourself, ensuring that cold water kept being applied to the burns, she would be a lot worse.”

“And if I caused the explosion in the first place, Hilda?” Miss Wilson returned bleakly.

“You didn’t, Nell, I’m certain of that.” Miss Annersley had never sounded so positive.

Miss Annersley went across to the School for an update from the Senior Mistress and invited Ruth, Rosalind, Nancy and Kathie back for the evening. The following afternoon saw all the Prefects visiting the Heads; although in the middle of the Australian winter, the temperature was reasonable outside and it was decided that a barbeque was possible. As the girls had brought the food, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson had provided the charcoal for the barbecue, and the drink!

Miss Wilson, for perhaps the first time in over a week, seemed happy; the Head was glad, watching her friend laughing with the girls, she had started to be seriously concerned about Nell.

Halfway through the afternoon there was a knock at the door, Miss Annersley, expecting it to be some School issue, went to answer it. Outside stood a somewhat embarrassed Mrs Williams, the Child Social Worker, the Head recognised her from Ruth Derwent's description, and the Fire Investigation Officer, Mr Connor.

Miss Annersley looked questioningly toward Sue Williams, “Is something wrong?” she enquired.

Sue Williams sighed slightly, “Miss Annersley, please believe me, when I say that I have no wish to cause further upset, but information has been received that indicates that, against our recommendations, Miss Wilson is currently in contact with minors.”

Miss Annersley looked quickly toward Mr Connor, in no doubt as to the source of the information; she looked back toward the social worker. “Miss Wilson and I are currently entertaining the 15 Prefects from the School, Mrs Williams. However all of them have reached the age of 18 and are therefore classed as adults. You are welcome to ascertain that for yourself.” She indicated that they should both follow her and led the way through to the room at the rear of the cottage. The patio doors opened onto the garden at the back and most of the Prefects were either sat in the lounge or out in the garden, helping with the barbecue.

Nell Wilson was sitting, talking with Louise, Carol and a few of the other Prefects when Miss Annersley and her unwelcome guests appeared. On seeing the Fire Investigation Officer her face darkened somewhat in anger, however she remained seated.

The Head turned to Mrs Williams, “As you can see, there is no-one below the age of 18 here, Mrs Williams,” she said softly, “it appears that you have been misinformed.”

The Social Worker looked around her slowly before facing the stately Headmistress once more, “Forgive me Miss Annersley, I understand that all of these girls are orphaned? They have no family?”

Hilda Annersley nodded slightly, “Technically, yes, Mrs Williams, although they look upon Nell and myself as their family.”

“Including the fact that you, jointly, stand as Guardians for all of them? Including administration of their finances?” Mrs Williams’ voice was very apologetic.

“That is correct,” The Head suddenly had a premonition as to the next sentence and prayed that she was wrong. Her prayer went unanswered however as the social worker replied.

“In that case then, Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, their actual age has no bearing on the matter. These girls have, by making you their Guardians, reverted to a child-like status in the eyes of the law. As children, it is therefore strongly recommended that they not associate with Helena Wilson until such time as the Fire Investigation Officer has given his verdict and the Crown Prosecution Service decided if there is a case to answer.” The social worker mouthed the official phrases with some distaste.

Looking across at Mr Connor, Hilda saw he had a look of extreme satisfaction on his face. Nell Wilson rose and walked across to stand next to her friend. Ignoring Mr Connor she addressed her remarks to Mrs Williams,

“I will go and stay with another friend, Mrs Williams, someone who does not have any children. I do not wish to place you in an awkward situation,” her voice was very quiet and her eyes reflected her hurt. She smiled wanly at Miss Annersley before preparing to leave the room.

It seems as if the social worker is being pushed, that didn't sound like somehting she wanted to do, or even would have done if she could avoid it, and why did he have to be there anyway. The social worker could have acted on his info without him present...he seems to be a little too ever present!?

It does seem very personal against Nell, and a strong determination to ruin her split her from Hilda at a time she needs her most.

I also wonder if there is someone who is giving the evil 'vestigator info, How did he know about the barbecue?

Please Lesley?

“Hang on a sec…” Alison Martin had entered the room while the social worker was pronouncing her recommendations, “What’s this all about?” She walked up to the small group, “I thought that Miss Wilson was away from school on sick leave? Now you are saying she is being investigated?”

Miss Annersley turned to explain but the Fire Officer spoke first, “Haven’t they told you? That fire was deliberate – and I’m currently investigating how it was caused. Your teacher here is the only one with access to that lab and she was heard threatening the girl who is now seriously injured in the hospital!”

There was silence for a short time then Louise spoke, “Miss Wilson, is this true? Is this the reason why you’ve been away from the School, because of these accusations?”

Nell Wilson nodded abruptly; too angry and upset to say anything. The girls looked at one another, those from the garden filing in to be updated on events by their colleagues.

The three senior Prefects, Alison, Louise and Carol, conferred quickly, then turned to the Head,

“We need to discuss something rather urgently Miss Annersley,” Carol said softly, “we’ll not be long,” The Prefects all walked back out into the garden and could be seen quietly speaking about events. After a few minutes they all returned and stood, waiting, while their spokeswoman, Alison, began,

“We had no idea that the Deputy Head was being investigated,” she began, “nor did we know that she had been banned from associating with children. I assume in case she is considered a danger to them?”

At the question Mrs Williams nodded. Miss Wilson, her face pale, stood next to her friend, drawing some support from the arm Miss Annersley had placed around her.

“Knowing this,” Alison continued, “We find we can no longer accept Miss Wilson as our Guardian, and realise that this will also mean rejecting the Head. Miss Annersley, we will arrange the financial matters tomorrow when the banks reopen. But would like, in the presence of these witnesses, to formally reject both Miss Wilson and yourself as our legal guardians effective immediately.”

Miss Annersley looked across at the Head Girl, “Is that the decision of you all?” she asked softly, and watched as every Prefect nodded. “Then we both, reluctantly, acknowledge your decision.”

Miss Wilson’s face was now white but she merely nodded agreement to her partner’s words.

The Social Worker, Mrs Williams spoke, “I will stand as witness,” she said quietly, her face reflecting her disquiet at the actions being taken.

“I also stand witness,” the triumphant voice of the Fire Officer was in complete contrast, he smiled at the Prefects, “I’ll escort you back to the school if you wish,”

*Guessing* As they are over 18, if they declare that they no longer need guardians and take over their own affairs, they can associate with Hilda and Nell as they wish. I hope!

But, WHO snitched to the dreaded Fire Officer that they were at Hilda & Nell's cottage? Shocked

Feeling rather sorry for the Social Worker being put in that position.

Alison looked across at him, “What makes you think we want to go back to the school?”

“Heck, we’ve not eaten yet and I’m really hungry!” this from Sue Travis, renowned for her appetite! Some of the others laughed appreciatively.

“Miss Wilson promised to get me a drink,” put in Lyn, “I’ll wait.”

Connor looked around at the girls, they were all smiling in agreement with the comments made, “But I told you, Miss Wilson is the only person who could have fired that lab…”

“You know,” the quiet voice of Jane Carmichael interrupted, “I’m hoping to enter the legal profession. I was under the impression that Australian law was the same as British, innocent until proven guilty!”

Louise looked over at the Fire Officer, “We’ve known Miss Wilson since we were five years old,” she began, “there’s more chance of me reaching the Moon under my own power, then that she could deliberately harm one of the pupils!”

Carol continued, “Now that we’re legally adults, we can chose who we associate with. We’re staying here!” She turned to the two Heads, “That is, if you’ll have us?”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Of course, we invited you after all!”

Miss Wilson also smiled her agreement, her pallor disappearing and being replaced by a slight flush on hearing the Prefects’ statements.

The Fire Officer’s face darkened, “Stay then,” he spat, “when your teacher is jailed for attempted murder you’ll think back on this day!”

Miss Annersley tightened her grip on her friend, preventing Miss Wilson from responding to the statement, she looked across at Mr Connor, “I think you had better leave here, Mr Connor. Nell and I jointly own this cottage, it is not School property and you are not welcome. In fact, you are trespassing!”

“And exactly how will you force me to go, Headmistress?” The Fire Officer was so angry he was speaking recklessly.

“Miss Annersley will not need to force you to leave, Mr Connor,” Helen Cook spoke up, “because we will do it for her!” The rest of the Prefects murmured their agreement and the man found himself staring at 15 pairs of extremely hostile eyes.

The Head smiled slightly, “That will not be necessary, girls, Mr Connor is leaving!” She gazed across at him, Connor gulped slightly then turned on his heel and stalked out. There was the sound of the front door being slammed and then silence. The Social Worker, Sue Williams smiled diffidently,

“I should be going now, as well,” she said, she turned to Miss Wilson, “I’m sorry for all this trouble, Miss Wilson. If I were ever to have to face this type of accusation I hope that my friends would prove as loyal.” She smiled her farewell and left.

Those left stood quietly for a moment before a shout of “the barbecue!” suddenly reminded everyone that they were supposed to be cooking. Most of the girls went back out to the garden, or settled onto the sofas in the lounge. Miss Annersley looked at her friend,

“Are you alright, Nell?” she asked softly,

Miss Wilson smiled, “I am now, who wouldn’t be when I’ve just had such faith from the girls?”

The Head returned the smile, “You really should learn to trust your friends, Nell!” she said reprovingly, “as if anyone that knows you could believe these allegations!”

Miss Wilson looked accusingly toward her friend, “Hilda Annersley, you are not trying to tell me that you knew what Alison and the others planned? You were as dumbfounded and upset as I when they said they no longer wanted us as their Guardians!”

Miss Annersley’s face was impassive but there was a definite glint in her eyes, “Of course I knew, Nell, and I’m surprised you did not.” Her voice was also emotionless.

Miss Wilson stared at Miss Annersley for some time; the Head returned her stare, unblinkingly. Eventually she laughed, “Hilda, over the years I’ve known you, I’ve seen you perfect that deadpan expression. There’s no way I can tell if you are telling me the truth!”

“I’m upset that you could even consider that I’d lie to you, Nell.” Miss Annersley’s eyes were the only part of her showing her amusement. “Now come on, let’s rejoin the party!”

(Congratulations both Pats!)

Rachel I'm glad you are going to include him 'cos if you didn't I would, with Lesley's permission, just as I did Phillipe from the Felicity drabble. Hope we will get more of that after JC, I'm watching it now.

Lesley, this is wonderful, I've just read the two parts at once and my feeling was the same as the Pats, and I'm so glad, the socila worker seems ok, are we to see more of her? What is with this Connor chap, who is he that he has such a vendetta against Nell?

Rachel/Carolyn you have my permission to do whatever you like to Tony Connor - he is rather nasty isn't he?

Wow loads more to catch up on, like everyone else, I'm wondering what it is with this Tony *******, could he be a relative of Matey out for revenge possibly? She did have a sister didn't she?

The following morning Miss Annersley had a visitor, she looked up in some surprise when the Social Worker, Mrs Williams, appeared.

“What can I do for you, Mrs Williams?” she asked softly, although there was a hard look in her eyes.

Mrs Williams sighed, “Miss Annersley, I appreciate that, so far, I have come across as the enemy. But, on this occasion, I believe we are on the same side.”

“Oh?”

“Miss Annersley, my office relies, to a certain extent, on phone calls from concerned neighbours. A lot of these are anonymous, the neighbours don’t want it known that they have informed the authorities, even when a child’s life might be in danger!”

“That can happen?” The Head sounded shocked.

Mrs Williams nodded, her own eyes darkening in some pain, “ Sometimes the neighbours put off contacting us until it’s too late, until they no longer hear the child sobbing and cannot hear him begging for help an…. Are you alright, Miss Annersley?”

Miss Annersley had suddenly turned white, she looked across at the Social Worker and shook herself slightly, her colour returning, “My apologies, Mrs Williams, you triggered a rather unpleasant memory. I realise that your office has a very worthwhile function, however I’m sure that you will appreciate that your current stance with regard to my Deputy Head does not endear you to either myself or any of my Staff.”

The Social Worker nodded, “As I said, I realise I’ve come across as the enemy, but I think your School has a far more likely candidate as an enemy.”

“Meaning?”

“The Fire Investigation Officer, Mr Connor. He contacted us about your party yesterday, but, even more damning, it was his call that first alerted our office to the situation here.”

Miss Annersley looked across at her visitor thoughtfully, “That would seem to be a breach in confidentiality, Mrs Williams, may I ask why you are telling me this?”

“Because of yesterday, Miss Annersley,” Mrs Williams replied, “Because he so obviously wanted to cause trouble and anguish for your friend and yourself.”

“You think Mr Connor may have some personal vendetta against Nell Wilson?”

“Perhaps, or it could be a vendetta against the School itself. Have you been here long, Miss Annersley?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “the School has been here a little over 18 months, before that we were in Switzerland. To my definite knowledge we have never had any contact with Mr Connor before five days ago.”

“Well I still consider that his attitude toward your School is unnatural. I believe you have an enemy there, Miss Annersley, you should be on your guard.”

The Social Worker departed with Miss Annersley’s thanks ringing in her ears, the Head sat thinking for some time. Her reverie was interrupted by the arrival of the Security Chief,

“Are you busy at the moment, Hilda?” John Coates smiled.

“One day, John, I’ll be able to reply that I have nothing to do!” The Head responded dryly, she smiled, “How may I help you?”

Mr Coates came into the Study and sat in one of the chairs opposite Miss Annersley, “I’ve received some information from one of my friends in the force. Thought you’d be interested.”

Miss Annersley nodded, waiting.

“Well Tony Connor is who he says he is, a Fire Investigation Officer. From out of this Region - but that’s normal procedure to send someone with no ties to the area. He’s also pretty good at his job, has a 94% conviction rate for suspicious fires he’s attended.”

“But?” The Head’s voice was soft but insistent.

Mr Coates smiled, “But, over the past two years his work has deteriorated, so much so that he was getting perilously close to dismissal. It was thought that the reason for the change was a gambling habit that had cost him thousands. He was very close to bankruptcy. Then, at Christmas, he had a sudden message to visit relatives in Europe, when he returned he was solvent, bags of cash, paid off all his debts and still has enough to feed a very large habit. He says it was left to him in a relative’s will, but his colleagues don’t ever remember him mentioning these relatives before.”

“Your friends in the Police obviously felt he should be investigated?”

“They did, but couldn’t come up with anything, when he was in Europe he mainly stayed in England or visited Monaco, for the gambling presumably, I think he went skiing once or twice as well.” Mr Coates sat back in his chair and smiled across at the Headmistress, “Obviously suspicious, but nothing concrete. My friends are going to keep digging, I’ll let you know if they come up with anything else.”

#624:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 12:13 pm

Oh, really? Relatives in Europe? Switzerland, by any chance? And is there to be a mysterious connection between Tony Connor and Kelly Stevens?

But I'm confused about the memory Hilda was affected by. Did I miss something or will it be further explained later?

#625:  Author: PatLocation: Doncaster PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 12:35 pm

I would guess that the sobbing, begging for help scene reminded her of her time as a prisoner of Ellie-bellie!

That's true, I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of children suffering, not Miss Annersley herself. (Wondered if maybe she'd heard something from Freudesheim. Wink )

The Real CS is unique in that it has it's history preserved in a series of books and that's where they need to look IMHO!

The only Tony I can think of is Barras. Matey's sister was married and had children.

Loved the posts Lesley. Also guessed what the prefects had up their clever little sleeves. But did Hilda know? I can't make it out.
I had the same thought as Carolyn about Santa, but obviously that's wrong.
This chap seems a very nasty piece of work - but why the grudge against Nell? If it was anything to do with Matey, wouldn't it be against the school in general? Confused

Not story I'm afraid - more of that tonight!

Thanks to all of those who told me their age - so far it looks as though Rebecca is Staff Baby! Could I also ask those of you who have not mentioned it on the board to let me know your surnames? It's a little difficult having a Schoolmistress in the story without a surname!

Thanks!

I've also just caught up... seems like a lot of us got behind this weekend! John Coates and the Major both sound like very sensible people, I'm trying to think up a link between Tony Connor, Kelly or the Major and the CS but I'm drawing a blank at the moment...

#661:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Mon Feb 16, 2004 7:21 pm

Two days passed; at the School business continued as usual, Miss Annersley giving progress reports on Kelly Stevens and Miss Wilson at the morning Assembly. The Head also continued to visit Kelly each day; Major Stevens was staying in one of the small flats attached to the hospital for visiting parents to use. He had been given leave from his regiment until his daughter was well. On one of the visit’s the burns specialist spoke to both the Major and Miss Annersley about Kelly’s prognosis. It was decided that she would soon be allowed to regain consciousness as she was doing so well.

Wednesday evening, after visiting Kelly, Miss Annersley arrived back at her cottage around nine pm to discover that there were visitors. She entered the cottage to discover Madge Russell and Joey Maynard sitting in the lounge with Nell. On seeing her appear Madge rose, a certain amount of trepidation evident on her face.

“Hilda, we’re only here visiting, to give Nell our support,” she began.

The Head glanced across at her partner who smiled back, she turned to the smaller woman in front of her, “Madge, you are always welcome here, don’t ever think otherwise!” she said gently.

Madge smiled slightly, “I wondered after the Board Meeting if either of you would ever speak to me again!” she admitted quietly.

“Madge, you did nothing maliciously,” Miss Annersley replied, “And we both owe you a great deal. I owe you a great deal. You have been a good friend to both of us, that hasn’t changed.” She smiled across at Madge who returned the smile before seating herself on the sofa.

“Joey has brought the latest news from Jeanne de Lachennais, Hilda.” Nell Wilson’s voice was still rather deep and hoarse from the smoke inhalation, although much improved.

Hilda looked interested, “What is the latest, Joey? Last time I had a postcard from her she was suffering from altitude sickness!”

Jeanne de Lachennais had not stayed with the Real Chalet School, she had taken a year off to fulfil a dream of hers. A renowned Alpinist, on entering the Real World she had been astounded to discover that Everest itself had been conquered! Although this event had taken place during the chalet school’s projected time line, EBD had obviously allowed very little in the way of news into the fictional world. Consequently there were any number of news items that had passed the chalet school inhabitants by.

On hearing that there were treks and climbs of the Himalayas offered, Jeannie had taken a year’s leave to join one. She was in serious training currently for an attempt at climbing some of the smaller mountains in the chain. Like almost everyone her apparent age was at least 10 years younger than that in the books and she had always remained fit.

Joey smiled across at the Head, “She’s over the altitude sickness now and is slowly acclimatising. They hope to be able to continue the climb in a few days - apparently two of the company had to quit as they couldn’t acclimatise. They’ve been joined by one other woman though so have stayed at similar numbers.”

“Sounds as though she’s actually going to do it!” Nell Wilson sounded pleased for her friend, “Oh and Hilda, she’s got the laptop we sent her - the one with mobile technology - she said, if she can manage to drag it with her to the top of the mountain she’ll speak to us via the web cam, and ask for her job back!”

“She knows a job is waiting for her when she gets back.” Miss Annersley smiled, “Julie Berne was saying only yesterday that she needed more language mistresses.”

A short time later the telephone rang; expecting it to be School business Miss Annersley answered it and was surprised to hear Major Stevens on the other end.

“Major Stevens, what may I do for you? I hope Kelly has not had a relapse?”

“No nothing like that, Miss Annersley. I called to tell you that the Anaesthetist is going to reverse the paralysis and waken Kelly tomorrow morning. I-I-I would really appreciate it if you could be here.” The soldier’s voice stuttered slightly with emotion, “I think she should see a familiar female face, as well as her dad!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Of course I’ll be there, Major, I’ll rearrange my schedule for tomorrow. When do they plan to awaken her?”

“About 0900hours, Ma’am,” came the reply, “Thank you Miss Annersley.”

The following morning, a little before 9am, Miss Annersley joined the Major in Intensive Care, they watched, through the glass window, in silence as the Anaesthetist slowly reversed the process keeping Kelly unconscious. At a signal from him the ITU nurses disconnected the ventilator and Kelly started to breath for herself. At the same time she started to be particularly restless, fighting the nurses trying to keep her settled.

“That’s a normal reaction, Major, it’s nothing to be concerned about,” Dr Venables said softly, smiling at the man.

A short time later the tube down Kelly’s throat was removed and she was breathing on her own. Shortly after that Major Stevens and Miss Annersley were allowed into the room. After what seemed like a lifetime, Kelly opened her eyes,

“Hello dad,” she said softly, “what are you doing here?”

Major Stevens smiled, although a solitary tear ran down his cheek, “Oh, no reason Kelly-girl, was just passing!”

Thank you Lesley! Lots more lovely drabble! I'm now wondering if Mlle Lachenais up Everest has something more to do with the story than we're thinking...how could that possibly tie in with someone trying to sabotage the school?

I suppose we'll find out more about what happened to Kelly now she's woken up...am I still suspecting her? Hmmmm. I have to admit that it does begin to look less and less likely the more I see of this Fire Inspector bloke. But is he just a red herring? But if he was trying to ruin the school, implicating a mistress in the serious injury of a pupil would be a good way to go about it.

OK, Lesley, I'll admit it. You've got me foxed!

Therefore, must have mooooreeee!!!! Sooooooon!!!!!! Pleeeeeeeease!!!!

Kelly smiled slightly, her eyes moved across to alight on Miss Annersley; she smiled again.

“Kelly, it’s good to see you. How do you feel?” The Head’s low voice spoke quietly but carried.

Kelly thought for a moment, “Very thirsty, hurt everywhere. Am I in hospital?”

“Yes love,” the Major replied, he pulled a chair up to Kelly’s left and sat there, holding her hand. “Can you remember what happened?”

“There was an explosion,” Kelly replied falteringly, “in the Chemmy Lab, dad can’t I give up Chemistry? I really don’t like it!”

“We’ll see,” Major Stevens replied, “Can you remember anything else, Kelly?”

“Miss Wilson saved me,” Kelly’s voice was very quiet, “she pulled me out of the fire!”

“Yes Kelly, she did.” The Head replied.

For some time they remained, one on either side of Kelly’s bed, telling her about what had happened and about her treatment. There was an interruption as Dr Venables walked in with the Burns Specialist. They moved to one side, beckoning Major Stevens across to update him on his daughter’s condition.

Miss Annersley sat next to the bed, holding Kelly’s hand, at a movement she looked down, “Are you in pain, Kelly? I’m sure the nurses can give you something for the pain.” She signalled to one of the nurses who went to prepare the medication.

“Yes,” whispered Kelly, “it really hurts Miss Annersley, my legs, my chest my arms, everywhere!” She started to sob quietly, the Head, seeing that Major Stevens was unaware of his daughter’s pain, sat on the side of the bed and placed her arm around the girl.

“Never fear, Kelly, it will get better, I promise,“ Miss Annersley’s voice soothed the Fourth Former even as one of the nurses came up with a syringe full of a cloudy fluid, she injected it into the venflon in the back of Kelly’s hand.

Kelly looked across at her father then back at the Head, “Miss Annersley, I must speak to you, now, while dad’s away.”

“What is it Kelly?”

“The explosion, in the lab, it wasn’t an accident, it was a bomb,” the girl closed her eyes as the medication started to take a hold.

“What do you mean, it was a bomb!” Miss Annersley managed to keep her voice fairly low but even so the three over the other side of the room looked across in surprise.

Kelly was almost asleep but managed to open her eyes once more, with a supreme effort, fighting the drug in her system, she continued. “It was a bomb....and I know….Miss Wilson….” Her voice trailed off, she was asleep.

Lesley - how could you leave it like that, everyone will have heard her say Miss Wilson at the end of that sentence, and some of them may be thinking she was about to say Miss Wilson planted the bomb! And you know what her father said he would do to Miss W if she was guilty!

#698:  Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair PostPosted: Tue Feb 17, 2004 12:25 am

Since Lesley has left us high and dry, here's my theory on what happens next. (Tis your own fault Lesley Wink )
Quote:
Kelly was almost asleep but managed to open her eyes once more, with a supreme effort, fighting the drug in her system, she continued. .It was a bomb....and I know..Miss Wilson... Her voice trailed off, she was asleep.

Hilda slapped the girl hard on both sides of her face, forcing the girl to wake up again. "Now *****, tell me what happened!" screamed Hilda.
"It was a bomb," repeated Kelly. "And I know . . . Miss Wilson . . . is in love with John Coates but secretly married to another chappie by the name of Tony."
Hilda smiled, her vindictive smile. "So what about the bomb?" she asked in icy tones.
"John Coates planted it.He said 'If I can't have her, no-one can' and he chortled at the door of the chemmy lab." Kelly's eyes closed once more, and she drifted off to eternal rest, beyond the recall even of "The Red Sarafan".

Miss Annersley got up from the bed and lay Kelly down on the pillows, her face troubled, Major Stevens came across to join her,

“You seemed surprised, Miss Annersley,” he said softly, “What did Kelly say?”

The Head looked across at him thoughtfully, “She asked to speak to me in private, Major Stevens, and she did not have the opportunity to explain herself totally. What she did say was somewhat worrying.”

The Major looked as though he wanted to force Miss Annersley to say more, however he was mindful of her eyes piercing into him. He sighed, “Do you think it was important?” he asked eventually.

“Perhaps,” Miss Annersley replied, “we will just have to wait until she awakens.”

“Miss Annersley?” it was the nurse, the Head recognised it was Kat, one of the CBBers, “the dose was a standard one for her age and size, she’ll probably wake up within the hour.”

The next fifty minutes were spent in silence, waiting, eventually the girl stirred and opened her eyes, she looked round,

“Kelly, what were you saying to Miss Annersley just now?” this from the Major.

Kelly looked accusingly toward the Head who smiled, “I said nothing, Kelly,” she said softly, “But your father is very worried, perhaps you had better tell him.”

Kelly stared at her father for a long time, eventually silent tears began to run down her face, the Major placed his arm around her,

“Come on kid, whatever it is you can tell me.” He gave a half smile, “You won’t be in trouble, I promise!”

On her other side, Miss Annersley held Kelly’s hand and smiled, “You’ll not be in trouble from me either, Kelly. But you must tell us!”

Kelly looked down at the bed clothes for a time, then, “the explosion and fire in the Chemistry Lab.” she began, “It was an accident, I never meant it to happen.”

“Never meant what to happen?” Major Stevens sounded perplexed, Miss Annersley was quicker,

“Are you saying that you were responsible, Kelly?” she asked softly.

The girl looked across, “Yes,” she whispered fearfully, “I thought it was just a smoke bomb, that it would produce lots of smoke and get us out of class. We had a test on the periodic table that day, and I couldn’t do it! I didn’t want to fail another chemistry test!”

“You nearly died!” the words from the Major held such suppressed emotion that Kelly shrank back in her pillows, her face white.

“Careful, Major,” Miss Annersley placed a calming hand on his shoulder, “You’re frightening her.”

The Major took a deep breath, visibly restraining his temper, when he next spoke his voice was calm once more, “Do you know what the authorities thought, Kelly? They thought your Chemistry teacher was to blame. They thought she’d made a mistake. She’s had to live with that for nearly two weeks now.”

Kelly looked distressed and started to cry, she looked over at the Head, “I’m sorry, Miss Annersley, please tell her I’m sorry!”

“We’ll do better than that,” the Major sounded determined, “You’ll tell her yourself!” He turned to the Head, “Would you please ask Miss Wilson to come and see Kelly, Miss Annersley? I think she deserves to hear this first hand!”

Miss Annersley smiled and disappeared out to the telephone. Major Stevens turned back to his daughter, “Dry your tears Kelly-girl,” he said softly, “Yes you’ve done a stupid thing, but you’ve been well punished for it. It’s going to take weeks if not months for you to recover, but the surgeon says there’s no danger now.”

“I’m sorry dad,” Kelly was still crying,

“I know.”

#750:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 12:35 am

After only a very short time, John Coates appeared with Miss Wilson, she immediately went up to her friend, “Hilda, what is this? John said that you contacted him and asked him to bring me up to the hospital. But he wouldn’t say why!”

“He doesn’t know why, Nell,” Miss Annersley smiled, “there’s someone who wants to talk to you!” She led the way into the hospital followed by an intrigued Miss Wilson and John Coates. Just outside Intensive Care, Nell suddenly drew back,

“You’re taking me to see Kelly? But Hilda you know what that Social Worker said, no contact with children.” Her eyes showed pain as she said this.

At that moment Major Stevens appeared, “In this case, Miss Wilson, I believe my views supersede those of the Social Worker. I would like you to see Kelly, she has something she wants to say to you.”

Miss Wilson looked enquiringly toward her friend, the Head just smiled and pointed her to the door. Miss Wilson walked slowly into the room; in front of her, on the bed, lay Kelly Stevens, she smiled over at the girl,

“Kelly? Did you want to speak to me?” Miss Wilson approached the bed diffidently, she sat in the chair to her right.

Kelly had stopped crying, but her eyes were still rather red, her burns were mainly covered by bandaging but some on her front and shoulders were covered only with a transparent dressing. Miss Wilson looked at the dressings,

“You’ve got far more burns than me,” she remarked, “they must be painful.”

“They are,” Kelly whispered, “but dad says they’ll get better.”

“That’s good,” there was a pause, then Miss Wilson repeated her question, “did you want to speak to me, Kelly?”

Silence for a short time, then, “Yes, Miss Wilson, I wanted to say sorry,” Kelly turned to gaze directly into Miss Wilson’s eyes, “sorry because it was my fault the explosion and fire happened. I had a smoke bomb in my bag,”

Miss Wilson stared across at her pupil, uncomprehendingly for a moment, then, as Kelly’s words sunk in, all three watchers saw a significant amount of tension leave the Deputy Head’s body. She smiled over at the girl, “Are you sure that caused the explosion?”

Kelly nodded, “Yes, Miss Wilson, it must have been faulty cos it was only supposed to smoke, not explode!”

Miss Wilson’s eyes filled with tears and she impatiently brushed them away, “Thank you Kelly, for telling me. I thought I’d made some error and caused the blast. I would never have forgiven myself if…” Miss Wilson swallowed quickly, she smiled at the girl, “Why did you have a smoke bomb?”

“It was to get out of the test, I didn‘t know it and thought you‘d be angry!” Kelly was staring fixedly down at the sheet on her bed, too ashamed to look Miss Wilson in the eye.

The Deputy Head reached across and raised the girl’s chin, looking into her blue eyes, “I might have been,” she admitted, “a little. But I’ll bet you'd prefer that to the pain you have now!”

Kelly nodded, her eyes filling with tears once more, “I’m sorry, Miss Wilson, for bringing the smoke bomb to class, for your injuries and everything, for not liking science,”

Miss Wilson smiled, “I don’t expect everyone to like science, Kelly, just to try hard at their lessons. Will you do that for me?”

“You mean I can come back to the School? You won’t expel me?”

Miss Wilson glanced across at her partner who smilingly shook her head, she grinned at Kelly, “No, we’ll not expel you, Kelly” Her voice deepened slightly and a wicked look came into her eyes, one that had been absent for almost two weeks, she continued, “Confidentially, Kelly, not everyone is good at science. Miss Annersley didn’t even know what a trace fossil was!”

“But I know that!” Kelly returned the grin,

“Well then, you’re better at science than the Head herself!”

Behind her Miss Annersley had stiffened with indignation, Major Stevens was biting his lips, trying not to smile, while John Coates had turned away with suspiciously shaking shoulders!

Miss Wilson smiled across at Kelly, “Promise me that next time you’re worried about a test, you come and speak to me, you don’t go off buying a faulty smoke bomb!”

Kelly returned the smile, “I promise, Miss Wilson. But I didn’t buy the bomb - my friend Rachel sent it to me!”

Miss Annersley spoke up, “Rachel? I wasn’t aware that there was a Rachel in your class, Kelly.”

“Oh she’s not in my class, Miss Annersley, she’s a grown up. We started talking when she rang my mobile by mistake, months ago when I was still in England. We’ve kept in touch since and she texts me every so often. When I said I was not looking forward to the test she said she’d send this smoke bomb to stop the lesson - I’ll have to tell her it was faulty.” Kelly finished talking and lay back, rather tired.

The four adults in the room exchanged worried glances, the Major addressed his daughter, “Kelly, do you know this woman’s full name?”

Kelly shook her head, “Don’t even know how she spells her name, dad, she rarely uses it - in texts she just signs R.”

Oohhh! - fantastic and I absolutely LOVED Bill's line about Hilda's lack of ability in the sciences ... and everyone's reaction to it!!

As for the mysterious Rach(a)el - well, personally I'm quite convinced it's a Rachel - but then I suppose I'm biased! Wink
LOL - most obvious candidate would be Rachel the Witch but maybe that's too obvious ...

*expecting lots more of this, Lesley! It's a shame she won't text with her full name!! *

Gosh, a mystery solved and another one to immediatly take its place.

I wonder if tony knows something about this mysterious Rach(a)el. I have a feeling we are about to find out just how many Rach(a)els live in the UK!

Well I don't think it was me - I'd have signed CR instead of R - or so I'll claim! I wonder who it was...

Or was it someone with a grudge against Rach(a)els trying to get them in trouble - a Katherine of some description perhaps...

*wondering how long Lesley will make us wait to find out who it was*

Sorry about the delay - I fell asleep!

Kelly settled back in her pillows after saying this and fell asleep, Miss Wilson joined the others just outside the room,

“Miss Wilson, please forgive me,” Major Stevens stood in front of the Deputy Head, “I had no idea that my daughter was to blame, I had a suspicion that you would be the one responsible.” He held out his hand.

Miss Wilson grasped the hand and shook it warmly, “Major, I thought I could be the one responsible as well.” She said softly, “I am extremely grateful to discover that it was not due to any error on my part.”

The Major nodded, he then turned to Miss Annersley, “I’m prepared for any insurance claims, Miss Annersley, for the damage to the building. May I also thank you for not insisting that Kelly be expelled.”

The Head smiled, “I believe Kelly has been punished enough, Major,” she said softly, “as to the damage, you will have to liase with our Financial and Legal people, it may be that the explosion will be counted as accidental and therefore will be covered under our own insurance. They are the experts.”

Major Stevens smiled, “Thank you,” he said, “I’d better go back to Kelly, please come and visit her again.” He nodded to all three and went back into the room.

The Security Chief looked across at the two women, his face very grave, Miss Annersley noticed, “Is something wrong, John?”

John Coates sighed, “Hilda, it might just be that I’ve got an overly suspicious mind, being in the Police Force can do that, but I can’t get over the fact that this Rachel sent a smoke bomb to a 14 year old girl. Does that sound like responsible behaviour?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “It does not, but what else could it be?”

“Two possibilities,” Mr Coates replied, “One, that this person is not an adult, but another child, someone who thinks it’s a huge joke. Kelly has never met this person, spoken to her only a couple of times, it’s possible.”

“And the alternative?” Miss Wilson asked.

“Well, that’s where my nasty suspicious mind goes into overtime,” John replied, “Suppose it wasn’t a faulty smoke bomb? Suppose it was actually a bomb, sent deliberately to go off!”

“To kill Kelly?”

“Maybe, or even that it was aimed at you, Nell, or the School in general.” The Security Chief sighed, “As I said, I’ve got an overly suspicious mind, and I think I’m going to do a little more digging. It’s a pity that Kelly’s mobile will be so much scrap metal, being in the explosion…”

“She wouldn’t have had the mobile with her,” Miss Annersley interrupted, “the girls are not allowed to bring their mobiles into the main building, even having them switched off in their bags is not allowed - too much of a distraction. She probably kept it in her dormitory.”

“In that case I’ll have a quick word with the Major, see if he’ll allow me to check her phone - it’s possible that this Rachel person will have left a few clues on the memory.” He followed the Major back into Kelly’s room.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at each other, “I really hope John’s suspicions are unfounded, Hilda.” Miss Wilson said softly.

Miss Annersley nodded in agreement, “As do I, Nell,” the Head smiled across at her friend, “Well you’re obviously feeling a great deal better now,” she remarked dryly, “Don’t think I’ve forgotten that comment about my scientific skills!”

Miss Wilson smiled slightly, “It was only to make Kelly feel a little better, Hilda.” She stopped for a moment, flushing slightly with embarrassment, then quietly continued, “Hilda I’ll not forget your support over the last two weeks, I couldn’t have coped alone.”

The Head returned the smile, “not a problem, Nell, as someone once said to me - we’re family.” The two women started to walk back to the car park, as they rounded a corner Miss Annersley’s voice continued, “but that’s not going to stop me looking for revenge, you know! Telling a Middle that I’m bad at science!”

Well, I certainly timed that well. thanks for another great episode, Lesley. Good idea to check the mobile phone memory. Of course it could be anyone but .....

I like the way Hilda and Nell are keeping their sense of humour! I think I'd have been a gibbering wreck if I was in either of their shoes.

ETA 'either of their shoes' sounds weird but I'm sure you know what I mean!

Only a little one for today - can't stay awake!

Arriving back at their cottage the Head turned to her friend, “Nell, this is me telling you officially, your suspension is lifted. I’ll get Rosalie to type something up to confirm it.”

“Thanks Hilda, I appreciate that,” Miss Wilson smiled, “is there some reason you’re telling me here, rather than in your office?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes, Nell,” she said, “I’ve been thinking about what Tony Connor will do, if, as Sue Williams believes, he is our enemy. I do not believe he will accept this without a fight.”

“What do you suggest then?”

“We’ll need to have a conference, include Sue Williams and John, perhaps call in a few other people. Maybe you can arrange something?”

Nell Wilson nodded and together they got out of the car and walked into the cottage. A short time later the Head returned to the School to continue her normal work. She managed to pass on news of Kelly’s recovery to the Staff but said nothing about her confession. Back in the cottage, Miss Wilson contacted a number of people about a conference to discuss the fire/explosion and subsequent investigation, a time the following afternoon was booked - the entire School would be out at the running track as the Real Chalet School was hosting an athletics meeting with three other schools.

The next day, Friday, saw the School move over to watch the track and field events from early afternoon onwards. Miss Annersley said she would be there in time to present the prizes at the end of the meeting, but remained in her Study to catch up on some of her work - she was still having to cover Miss Wilson’s absence. The conference room was booked from 3pm, but she still had almost two hours in which to work.

The Head had been working steadily for almost an hour, gradually whittling down the number of emails, either by replying to them immediately, deleting them, or forwarding them to the relevant party. In between looking at the screen she found time to answer a few letters and reply to memos. She heard a noise and looked up, somewhat surprised, all the Admin Staff had declared their intention of watching the athletics, there should be no one else within the Admin block.

There was a short knock on her door, before she even had a chance to respond the door opened and a tall figure, hidden in shadow, stood there.

Depends on who is doing the defining of the word "tall". In my mother's eyes, I am tall. In the worlds eyes, I am a fairly short person. My mother is 4' 11 ", so obviously her view of the world is different to someone of say 6' 10" !!!

Sorry it took so long - hope you think it's worth it!

“I hoped I’d find you here!” The voice was immediately recognisable to Miss Annersley,

“I didn’t expect you to still be here, Mr Connor. How may I help you?”

The Fire Investigation Officer walked into the Study and sat in one of the chairs opposite the Head’s desk. Miss Annersley noted that he was clutching a sheet of paper. He passed the paper across, the Head saw that it was a copy of the Agenda for the scheduled meeting.

“I heard about the meeting, and about the attendees, I was curious,” Mr Connor’s voice held an air of triumph, “that’s quite a list of people you have coming, the Fire Chief, Mrs Williams the Child Social Worker, the local Police Chief, you’ve even got my boss to come along.”

“We felt the situation needed an in-depth discussion, Mr Connor, especially in light of recent developments.”

“Recent developments? I suppose, seeing that Stevens fellow is also attending, that the girl has said something?”

Miss Annersley sat back in her chair and looked across at the man with renewed interest, “Now why would you think that, Mr Connor?” She asked softly.

The man laughed, “I may be any number of things, Miss Annersley, but I know my job. It was patently evident that the blast originated in exactly the spot the Stevens kid was sitting. The blast was extremely self contained, only causing minor injuries to the two sitting on either side of her. The resultant fire was because of the reaction with the stored chemicals, but they didn’t cause the initial blast - that had to be an incendiary device.”

“And how long have you known this information, Mr Connor?” The Head’s voice was cold.

“Just on a week now,” the nonchalant reply, “And, before you ask, the evidence suggested straight away that the device was beneath the bench, in a satchel or bag. It was enough to consider that your friend was not the culprit, that the girl had brought in the device herself.”

“You could have exonerated Nell seven days ago?” Miss Annersley’s voice held suppressed anger within it, “That begs the question, Mr Connor, why did you, instead, do your best to ensure that she remained the chief suspect? And why add all the extra touches - informing the Social Services and speaking to Major Stevens?”

“Now that’s obvious, Hilda,” Connor’s voice was disparaging, “why would any professional lie about his findings? Because I was paid a great deal of money of course!”

Miss Annersley’s eyebrows rose at this information, Connor noticed and laughed,

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said, “You’re wondering why on Earth I’m taking the risk of saying all of this to you?”

“It had crossed my mind.” The Head’s voice was smooth.

“Well I’m not stupid, you know,” The man stood up and walked across to the connecting door leading to Miss Wilson’s Study. He flung the door open, revealing the room to be empty and in darkness. He turned back to the woman at the desk, “The entire School is empty, like this room, there’s no-one else in the entire Admin block except you and me.” He walked over to stand opposite the desk, looking down at the woman in the chair. “If you attempt to repeat any of this conversation it will be put down as you trying to save your partner.”

“I have no need to do that,” Miss Annersley replied softly, “Nell has been exonerated, unless you’re saying that you are planning to fabricate evidence?” She stopped to look across at the man sharply.

Connor nodded, “Yes, it’s easy enough to do, a change in emphasis for the blast area, a somewhat different test sample sent off to forensics, and a search of your cottage.”

“Our cottage?”

“There is a significant amount of explosive residue within your cottage, Miss Annersley, I know, because I planted it there last Sunday, more than enough for any jury to be convinced that Helena Wilson was making a bomb in her home. You’d probably end up being pitied, as the person still convinced of her friend’s innocence even when there was overwhelming evidence to convict.”

“You are forgetting about the evidence from Kelly Stevens herself,”

Connor shook his head, “No, kids change their minds about things everyday. A clever lawyer could make her trip up, cause her evidence to be ruled inadmissible, might even get the kid doubting her own mind.”

“If you are so certain that you could cause this to happen, why are you telling me now?” The Head’s voice was intense.

The man sat in the chair opposite and looked across at the woman, “When I took on this job it was for a great deal of money, I was deeply in debt and losing more money everyday. This seemed to be a perfect way out. All my debts paid off and a large nest egg in the bank. But I didn’t bank on a number of things, firstly that you all refused to consider that Wilson could be guilty, that she kept getting support and therefore wouldn’t break. Then I didn’t know about your Security Chief’s connections to the Force, that was very awkward, plus, I’d been told that the girl would be dead - your friend really messed things up there by saving her. Now there’s this conference, and looking at the people you’ve got coming to it, well, it’s likely that I’d be in trouble sooner or later.” He sat back in the chair and relaxed, looking over at the Head.

“So I have two alternatives, I can disappear and they can discover all my efforts to frame your friend or I can continue the investigation long enough for me to fabricate the evidence that will see your friend convicted of attempted murder. It’s up to you which one I do.”

“Up to me?”

“That’s right, you see for me to disappear, I’ll need a lot more money. I’m not likely to get it from my previous employer - she’s going to be rather unhappy with me - so I can get it from you.”

“What makes you think I have the funds necessary?”

“You’re a Permanent Director on the Board of one of the most successful companies in the Region, you have also, until recently, stood as Guardian to some of the wealthiest girls in the country and you are the overall Head of this School. You’ll get the money.”

“And if I do not?” Miss Annersley’s question was very quiet.

“Then Nell Wilson will be going to prison for twenty years minimum.”

After his final statement the man sat back in his chair and waited. Miss Annersley sat staring into space for a short time, then abruptly stood up and walked over to the window. She glanced outside, Connor followed her glance, there was nothing but wilderness to be seen.

“Mr Connor, if I am to pay you, will you also answer some questions?”

“Depends,” Connor replied, “What questions?”

“Who is your employer?”

Connor laughed, “Now even if I knew that, I’d not tell you. That person is seriously unwell, I’ve only heard from her via the phone or text. Her voice was disguised but, from the things she said she is obviously very upset with some people. I do not wish to become one of them.”

“Yet if you leave this place with your role unfinished, she may become angry with you.”

“Doubtful, I think her hatred has become an obsession and anyway…” Connor stopped, “That’s enough Miss Annersley, it’s not part of the deal. Now, are you going to pay me off?”

The Head turned slowly to face the man, “Yes,” she said softly, “I am going to pay,”

Connor grinned.

“However, I do not believe that you will enjoy the way I will pay you for your role over the last ten days.” Miss Annersley’s voice continued to be soft, but there was a bite to it.

“What do you mean?” The man’s voice had taken on a menacing tone.

“When I asked Nell to arrange the conference, we agreed that knowledge of it should be kept from you, one of the simplest ways of ensuring that was to have the conference in secret.”

Connor looked puzzled, “But it’s no secr…” he began.

“The conference was held last night, Mr Connor, here at the School at around ten pm. Long after you had left.” Miss Annersley smiled slightly.

Connor’s face darkened, “Clever,” he sneered, “But I can still implicate your friend, no one else knows of this conversation.”

"Well that’s not, strictly, true, Mr Connor,” Miss Annersley’s voice held some satisfaction, “You see, as well as the attendees as delegated on that sheet of paper, there were three others, you may recognise them, Alison Martin, Louise Chad and Carol Leigh, my three Senior Prefects.”

The man frowned but said nothing.

“Those three represented the Prefect body, all of whom I had to speak to prior to the start of the term.” The Head walked back over to her chair and sat down, “The reason I spoke to them was because I wanted them to remove three listening devices from my Study. Last night, I requested that they put them back.”

Colour drained from his face, “You mean…?”

“I mean, that your every word, since entering my Study this afternoon, has been heard and recorded.” Miss Annersley’s voice was relentless.

Connor stood up quickly, “You bitch!” he said venomously, he then turned and moved quickly to the door. In the doorway stood two men, John Coates and Geoff Stevens, between them they manhandled the man back into the Study, holding him easily.

The Head looked across at the door as other people filed in, one she recognised as the local Police Chief, he walked over to the struggling man and, without emotion, placed him under arrest. At the click of the handcuffs Connor sagged.

“You’ll never convict using evidence from a bug - any lawyer will get it thrown out!” He said quickly.

“We won’t need to use that evidence,” the Police Chief said, “But we will continue our investigations independently, I can see a number of charges being levied including harassment, falsification of evidence in an investigation and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.”

Another man stepped up, “That will be easy to prove Tony, I’ve seen the scene of the explosion, it is obvious that you’ve not done your job properly. I finished the investigation myself last night and was able to exonerate Miss Wilson.” Connor’s manager turned away, then, remembering something, turned back, “Oh, and you’re fired!” He said.

“They have also been investigating the large sum of money that’s been paid into your bank account,” this from John Coates, “as it’s thought to originate from a British relative who died, the British Inland Revenue are very interested. Seems there is something called Inheritance Tax over there, they’ve got permission to freeze your bank account and confiscate any monies found. They may also be able to hunt down those you paid the money to and demand it back!”

Connor went even paler at the thought that some of his creditors would have money paid forcibly removed. The Police Chief held his arm and pulled him toward the door, halfway there another figure appeared at the door.

Nell Wilson walked in to stand in front of Connor, her grey eyes flinty and her face dark with anger. “So, not content with trying to ruin my life and make me think I could be responsible for seriously injuring a pupil. I now find your only motive was money. And to add to your crimes you attempt to extort money from my friend, knowing that she would have stolen or perjured herself to save me.”

Nell smiled slightly, “You know, all last night I kept going through exactly what I was going to say to you. I had a wonderful speech set up, one that would have shown my abilities with sarcasm had not waned. I would have made you feel almost as worthless as I, personally, consider you to be. And certainly have let you experience some of the anguish I’ve been through this past two weeks. But now, I find that you are not worth any of it, instead I’ll just show you how I feel.”

As she said her last words Miss Wilson drew back slightly then launched a punch directly at Connor’s face. The punch was thrown with some skill and a lot of strength. It knocked the man backwards and, as his hands were cuffed he fell to the floor. He rolled over, struggling back to his knees, already the area around his right eye was starting to turn black.

“That’s assault,” he whispered breathlessly, “Unprovoked assault, on someone without a chance to defend themselves. I’ve got witnesses.”

“I saw nothing,” John Coates’ voice said emphatically,

“There was no assault,” this from Major Stevens.

The Police Chief smiled and dragged Connor to his feet, “I had my eyes shut,” he said blandly, “didn’t see any assault. Now I’d suggest you keep quiet, Connor, or I may leave you in here alone with Miss Wilson, I’m sure she has a number of other issues she wants to discuss!”

Seriously worried that everyone can now anticipate the next bit of my story - will have to do something about that!

I feel so relieved.

I suppose the person texting Kelly was also paying Conner, and that it is a Rach(A)el of some variety. I would guess at a witchy variety. What will happen next, another attack in some form or other??? Not really sure.

So, come on Lesley, what does haoppen next?

Lesley trying desperately to recover from the hysterical laughter that comment engendered!

The Police Chief left with his prisoner, and the Study slowly emptied of people, all congratulating the Head for the success of the plan, and Miss Wilson for her exoneration. Finally there were only two people left in the room; Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson. Miss Wilson sighed slightly and walked over to sit in one of the chairs facing the Head, as yet Miss Annersley had said nothing to her directly, Nell thought she knew why.

“I know what you’re going to say, Hilda,” she began, “There’s no need for you to look at me like that!” Miss Annersley’s expression hadn’t changed. “You’re going to say that was undignified, and not in keeping with the image of a schoolmistress and especially a Deputy Headmistress. You’re going to chide me for losing my self control and allowing my temper to overtake me - as though I were no better than Margot Maynard was forced to act whenever Elinor was feeling bored.” She paused to take a breath, but not long enough to allow her friend to reply.

“I know I should have resisted the temptation, but after all he had done to me, and what he was saying that would have forced you to siphon off huge amounts of cash to pay him off, I couldn’t help myself. And I don’t think anyone else would blame me for my reaction. However I understand that you will not approve and, as your Deputy, that my actions reflect on you. You’ll probably consider that they will reflect very badly, Hilda, and I’m sorry for that. So why don’t you just say all those things now and get it over with!”

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend thoughtfully, when she replied it was with a distinct twinkle in her eye and suppressed laughter in her voice, “Nell, I wasn’t going to say any of that,” she said softly, “I was just going to ask you a question.”

“What question?” Miss Wilson looked intrigued.

“How’s your hand, Nell?”

There was silence for some time, Miss Wilson looked down at her right hand; ever since the punch she had held it, fist still closed, across her chest, she looked up at her friend, a slight smile on her lips, “It hurts like Hell!” she confessed, “Confidentially, Hilda, I think I may have broken something!”

The Head nodded, biting her lip to prevent a rather large grin migrating across her face, “I thought so,” she said quietly, “Well, if you can wait a while, I have to go and give out the prizes for the Athletics, and I know the School will be pleased to see you there too. Once that’s over I’ll drive you down to Casualty!”

*winces*

Not that this'll be any consolation to you, Pim, but my two lower wisdom (hah!) teeth have been coming through for the better part of five years now, I've had two abscesses on one of them [at least, two that were bad enough to merit me actually going to the dentist to get a script for penicilin] and one of them already has fillings.

But noooooo! They won't remove them 'unless they're causing you bother'.

Ray *is nearing the stage of begging to have them removed*

Thank you Lesley, I'm so pleased to see Tony **** get his just desserts, and good on Bill for punching him - really I would have liked to have seen her go for his throat with a sharp knife, but I don't suppose the witnesses could have ignored that, and I wouldn't want her to end up right back in trouble again.
I've no idea where this story is going to go next, I'm just looking forward to the thrills in store.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out in one op in 1996 and was over it in about a week with very little bruising or swelling. It's worth considering.

And I think a halt should be called to all wisdom-teeth-related stories before they get out of hand on this thread.

I've had virtually no problems with my wisdom teeth, apart from a bit of soreness when they came through. And they are staying put, my mother had her wisdom teeth out before she had braces, and she ended up with cheeks like a hamster for a couple of days.

#905:  Author: RayLocation: Bristol, England PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 2:21 pm

If they've not given you any trouble, Sarah, there's no reason to have them out.

Particularly these days, dentists are loath to say "take them out" if there's nothing desparately wrong. In my case, short of me being in screaming agony, he's not going to refer me because they're even more loath to refer you for general anisthetic treatment (for various reasons I'm not going to go into, I have a very severe dentist-phobia and have nearly passed out in the chair just having fillings - as a result, when my top two wisdom teeth DID need extracting, my dentist actually looked relieved when I said I wanted a general anisthetic!).

Ray *likes the man, loathes his works*

#906:  Author: Sarah_LLocation: Redcar PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 2:24 pm

The one reason for taking my wisdom teeth out is that I had braces a few years ago, before my wisdom teeth came through. It is possible that my wisdom teeth will cause my teeth to move back into less-than-straight positions. They used to remove wisdom teeth if you'd had braces, but my dentist says that's not the current practice. Thankfully, my wisdom teeth don't seem to have affected my other teeth, so I should get away with it.

Where on Earth did all the discussions on teeth come from? Never mind - next bit!

It was rather late that evening before Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson managed to return to their cottage. Miss Wilson had agreed to appear at the Prize Giving for the Athletics Meeting, she did however instruct her friend in how to apply a sling, to keep her hand from swelling up too much. Her appearance back at the School was greeted with uproar from all the girls, the largest roar coming from Upper IVa, although the Prefects were a close second. She stood next to the Head, blushing at her welcome, but also managing to grin around at everyone and promise that she’d be back at the School the following Monday.

After handing out the prizes - and the Real Chalet School had won the overall prize for athletics - Miss Annersley drove her friend down to the hospital, luckily they did not have to wait long before an X-ray confirmed that Miss Wilson had fractured two bones in her hand. Normally a plaster cast would be applied, however, because of the healing burns, it was decided instead to apply a back slab and bandage to the hand and lower part of the arm. She was also to wear a high sling for a week or so.

Although not on duty, Dr Venables had been informed that two of the Permanent Directors were in Casualty, and had wandered across to see them. She looked at the injury and the X-ray, she then turned to Miss Wilson,

“Who did you punch, Nell?”

Miss Wilson turned to her partner in indignation, Miss Annersley shook her head,

“Oh, Hilda didn’t say anything, Nell,” Daisy continued, “It’s just that the injury has obviously been caused by a punch, probably to the head or jaw.” The doctor smiled, “people forget just how hard the bones of the skull and jaw are, especially compared to the bones of the hand. Another time either go for a softer part of the anatomy or use the elbow - it has a far greater strength than the fist!” The doctor walked away chuckling to herself.

“A wonderful reputation I’m going to have in this hospital,” Nell hissed to Hilda, the Head remained silent, but even her stance shouted out ‘I told you so!’

Once the bandage and back slab had been applied the friends returned to the School, Miss Wilson intending to return to the cottage, however Miss Annersley persuaded her to return to the School proper and join them for their evening meal.

“After all, Nell, you are back on duty now,” she said smilingly, “It’s not suitable for you to be over in the cottage alone!”

Miss Wilson grinned and acquiesced. The meal that evening had a party atmosphere, although, with the exception of the Prefects, the girls were unaware of the true reason for Miss Wilson’s absence, the Staff all knew. They had also been informed about the confrontation in the Head’s Study and the result and were celebrating. After the meal the party continued in the Staff Room with the Deputy Head as the honoured guest

Ray its a plaster cast that fits only the back of the limb - used if it's thought there will be a lot of swelling or if there are other wounds - either of which would cause a full POP to be v painful and possibly dangerous. (Cutting off circulation or infection)

Laughing Laughing I understood Vikki's reference straight away! Laughing Laughing

The weekend passed slowly, Miss Annersley was covering the weekend for the School and therefore remained on the Grounds, however Miss Wilson spent some of the weekend visiting Kelly and also went out to a concert with some of the other Staff. On Sunday the friends had John Coates and his wife Sara round to dinner, they also invited Major Stevens. The talk progressed to the information John had been able to discover from Kelly’s mobile, it wasn’t a great deal. The mysterious person that had befriended Kelly had been very clever, there were no texts with a full name, only the letter R, and, when speaking, she had used some form of disguise so it was impossible to recognise the voice. The only thing that could be said with certainty was that the voice was that of an adult female, not even her age could be discerned. John had passed the information on to the Police in the hopes that something could be tracked down, but he didn’t think it would be possible.

Monday morning, early, saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson out walking. Due to Miss Wilson’s burns and lung damage, she had not been able to exercise a great deal, and was certainly not able to run at present due to the broken bones in her hand, however she could walk reasonably briskly. Miss Annersley continued her running after walking with her friend. After breakfast that morning the Head joined Miss Wilson in looking at the remnants of the Chemistry Lab. While the building itself was sound, the fire brigade had doused the flames before serious structural damage had occurred, the interior had been completely gutted. There was very little left in the Lab that was recoverable and Miss Wilson spent a few minutes reviewing all the swear words she had learnt in the last year!

“Have you finished yet, Nell?” Miss Annersley enquired after there was a short pause in the expletives.

“Not by a long chalk, Hilda,” Miss Wilson said grimly, “But I’ll save the next bout of cursing for later. Now just tell me how on Earth I’m supposed to give lessons? This place is going to need to be thoroughly overhauled, it’ll take weeks and is unlikely to be ready before next term!”

“We’ve got some contractors visiting in the next few days, Nell, you and Mollie will be able to choose a suitable one and get them started as soon as possible. I’ll admit though, I think you’re correct.”

“The only good thing is that the bulk of the chemicals and solvents are not stored here, but in their own store room.” Miss Wilson conceded reluctantly.

“In that case, if you had a spare room would you be able to give some form of Chemistry lessons?”

The Head of Science pondered, “Well there could be some experiments, especially if the room had access to water,” she smiled slightly, “Do you have somewhere in mind, Hilda?”

The Head nodded, “Yes, some of the rooms are not yet used, one of them was considered as a form room or common room - we’ll need it in the New Year - it has sinks and a boiler in a room leading off from it, and it’s on the ground floor. Would that be suitable?”

After some discussion it was considered to be a good substitute and over the next few days Miss Wilson managed to arrange a reasonable facsimile of a Chemistry lab in the classroom. She was also able to teach reasonably well, despite her arm being in a sling!

#937:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 10:52 pm

Later in the week there was a full Staff Meeting, held in the large conference Room at the top of the School. Taking her place at the head of the table, with Miss Wilson beside her, Miss Annersley smiled round before beginning to speak,

“As you know, we do not, generally send the girls home for Half Term,” she began, “in the past, those from local families have gone, with friends on occasion, but that has still meant that fully half the girls will be here for the four days. Now I know there have been a number of ideas about what can be done for the holiday - especially as we’re less likely to have good weather. All ideas will be considered.” She finished with a smile.

Miss Wilson herself spoke up, “I know that the some of the Guides and Brownies will be going off on camp, any idea how many?”

“Chloë Grey gave me the figures, Nell,” this from Miss Wilmot, Chloë’s form mistress, we’ll be losing about 120 in total along with half a dozen mistresses.” She passed across a sheet of paper. “Apparently Xanthe sent you a copy of this a couple of weeks ago.”

Miss Wilson thought for a moment, then smiled, “Yes, Nancy, I believe it was among the papers I took with me into the Chemistry Lab!” There was a quiet murmur of laughter.

“That will still leave us with between 150 and 200 girls,” Miss Annersley said, once the laughter had died down, “All mistresses will have half the time off, perhaps more as the numbers are low, however we still have to consider exactly what we plan to do over those four days.”

“My form have had a few thoughts too!” this from Miss Bruce, “It’ll probably be more for the evenings but they wondered if a Trivial Pursuits competition could be set up?”

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at each other, bemused, “Trivial pursuits, KB?” Miss Annersley was curious.

The German mistress explained about the game, helped out by some of the other CBBers, at the end of the explanation the Head nodded,

“It sounds good, Katherine,” she said, “Might I suggest that the teams all have a mixture of both Staff and pupils?”

“And both the original and the new chalet school, KB!” this from Miss Wilson, “That way you should have both halves of the twentieth century covered!”

Miss Bruce agreed, with a couple of the other staff, to be responsible for organising the competition.

“Is the weather definitely going to be bad, Hilda?” Miss Derwent, Senior Mistress asked.

“The forecast says it will be fairly warm but cloudy,” Miss Annersley replied, “Not too bad for anything outside, though spending the time sun bathing will not be possible!”

“Warm enough to surf?”

Miss Wilson considered, “If people wore wet suits they could surf, I expect, why?”

“Oh some of my form wanted to know if we could arrange some activities, surfing, water skiing, rock climbing. Similar to the type of camp we had during our last summer at the original chalet school.”

There was a silence as everyone waited for the Head to speak, Miss Annersley smiled, “I’ve no objection Ruth, something similar to the camp last year would work well. However I should make one thing abundantly clear from the start.” She paused to sweep her gaze around everyone present, ending by staring directly at her partner, “I will not be surfing!"

Everyone - advance warning - I'm away tonight so no more Surfeit until tomorrow night! Crying or Very sad However I did think this up overnight! Laughing

The following evening, just after six thirty, there was a knock at the Head’s door. Miss Annersley, keeping the custom of always being available in the early evening to any of the girls, called for the visitors to enter. Expecting it to be some Middles in trouble, she was slightly surprised to see her three Senior Prefects.

“Come in Alison, Louise, Carol,” she said warmly, “sit down, girls. Now how may I help you?”

The three looked at each other rather nervously before Alison began, “Miss Annersley, we’ve heard about the plans for Half Term. We’d like you to reconsider.”

The Head looked surprised, “Was there something on the projected programme that you think should not be there?” She asked softly.

“No, it’s not that,” Louise stopped, flushing slightly, “it’s the surfing.”

Miss Annersley looked across at all three girls, watching as each in turn went red, “And exactly what is it about the surfing is there that you would like me to reconsider?”

Carol looked at her two friends for support then looked at the Head, “We’d really like you to join in, Miss Annersley.” she said quickly, “You see we had the idea that we could make it a type of competition, with all of us in groups and the mistresses joining different groups. Obviously it would only be the Middles and Seniors but everyone could have fun betting on the outcome - saying how many times a person would manage to ride the waves before falling off - that sort of thing.”

Alison continued, “Some of the mistresses have even said they could run it like a horse race - with proper odds worked out and maybe even handicaps!”

“I see,” Miss Annersley’s face was unchanged, “May I ask which mistresses had this idea?”

“Er, well it was Miss Long actually,”

“Ah, our trainee accountant,” the Head’s eyes sparkled, “I may have to thank her personally.”

At this pronouncement all three girls winced!

“Well I’ll have to think about the idea of having a ‘race meeting’ here at the Real Chalet School,” Miss Annersley said quietly, “It’s hardly the type of situation that we are used to, however, I’ll not rule it out, just yet. With regard to my taking part, I’m sorry girls, making a complete fool of myself when on holiday is one thing. You girls and Miss Wilson are family, it’s allowed to be a fool with family!“ She smiled, “With the school in general, perhaps not!”

The three girls sat looking at each other, obviously steeling themselves to continue, the Head waited, intrigued as to their next argument. Eventually Louise spoke, “Erm, Miss Annersley, you remember at the end of our skiing holiday? The ice hockey tournament?”

“Of course,” Miss Annersley replied.

“W-w-well, you remember that both you and Miss Wilson ended up in the sin bin, and that you were responsible for breaking that fellow’s nose?”

“I remember, Louise, I had thought we’d agreed that the incident should be forgotten.” The Head’s voice held just a minute trace of ice, like the first frost before an Ice Age, “Am I to understand that you are threatening me? There is an ugly word for that, girls, it’s called blackmail. I did not think any pupil of mine would resort to that type of tactic.”

“No, Miss Annersley,” replied Alison, “It’s not something we think anyone should resort to, only…”

The Head’s eyebrow had risen, “Only?” she asked.

“Well, Miss Wilson told us of a time when you resorted to just such a tactic, Miss Annersley, to stop her from being nasty to Miss Moore just after we’d all converted back, last year,” the words from Carol were mumbled and all three girls had their heads down, not daring to look at the woman opposite.

Miss Annersley stared across at them for a full minute without saying anything, she then reached for the intercom connecting her office to that of the Deputy Head, “Nell,” she ordered, “get in here, now!”

Hilda has to surf! Very Happy

#972:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Tue Feb 24, 2004 5:50 pm

The speed with which Miss Wilson entered the Head’s Study convinced Miss Annersley that her friend had been waiting for the call, possibly waiting by the door! Miss Wilson looked quickly over at the three girls sat, red faced, in front of the Head, before turning to her partner.

“Hilda, you wanted me for something?” She smiled slightly, and then gulped as her friend turned to face her.

“Nell, explain please, why I have my three Senior Prefects attempting to blackmail me, using information they can only have obtained from you.” Miss Annersley’s voice was mildly curious but with definite frosty undertones.

Miss Wilson swallowed, “Ah, yes, well Hilda it just seemed a pity that neither of us would be taking part. I mean I cannot surf because of this,” she indicated her right hand in the hope of eliciting sympathy.

Miss Annersley raised an eyebrow, “Oh yes,” she said disparagingly, “Your self-inflicted injury,”

Miss Wilson flushed slightly, “Well, yes, I know that…but even so it would be a pity if, in your first term as Head of the Real Chalet School, you didn’t take part.”

“And you believe that a good way to ensure that I participate includes pressurizing me by threats?”

“Well, no, but..”

“Then none of you actually intended to carry out this threat?” The Head’s question encompassed all the other inhabitants of the room.

Louise looked up, catching Miss Annersley’s eye, “We, er, wrote an article,” she said quietly, “so you could see we were, we were..”

“So I could see that you were serious, Louise?” Miss Annersley asked, she watched as Louise nodded slightly, then, “May I see it?”

Louise handed over some sheets of printed paper, “we have the original on disk,” she said faintly.

The Head smiled slightly, “of course,” she said. The other four inhabitants of the Study waited while she read through the papers. “A rather well written article,” she said as she finished, “and it certainly shows my misdeed extremely clearly. Not a good example for the rest of the School to read about.” She reached across to touch the intercom on her desk, “Miss Dene would you please join me in my Study?”

The Deputy Head looked across at her friend in some puzzlement; Miss Annersley did not meet her gaze. As the Office Manager entered the room, the Head turned to her, smiling, “Rosalie, has the final draft of the magazine been sent off for printing yet?”

Rosalie looked at the other inhabitants curiously but answered her chief, “Not yet, Hilda, Ruth and Pat are going to make final decisions tomorrow along with Sue Travis.”

Miss Annersley nodded, she passed over the article to Miss Dene, “In that case, I wonder if you could ensure that this article is included in the magazine? I leave it to your discretion as to where it is placed, but please ensure it is not cut or edited in any way.”

Miss Dene took the article and quickly read through it, she flushed slightly, “Ah, Hilda, you have read this, haven’t you? I mean it’s hardly a good example!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Thank you, Rosalie, yes I have read it, please ensure it is included.”

Miss Dene nodded, somewhat puzzled, and left the room. There was silence in the Head’s Study, the three Prefects and the Deputy Head all seeming stunned by developments. Miss Annersley sat back in her chair and smiled at all of them,

“I will not be coerced, ladies, I will not be blackmailed. Above all else, my integrity must be beyond reproach, if that means that, occasionally, I must lose a little dignity, well so be it.” She smiled at the three girls in front of her, “that is all girls, you may go.” She said softly.

The three Prefects got up to leave, as they reached the door the Head’s soft voice stopped them, “I will expect to see all three of you, every morning until Half Term, at 6am outside our cottage.”

“Miss Annersley?” Alison’s voice reflected all three girls’ puzzlement.

Miss Annersley’s face split into a wide smile, “You are going to be very busy, Alison,” she said, “I refuse to humiliate myself at half term, so you have the next ten days in which to teach me how to surf!”

The girls exchanged large grins, “We’ll be there, Miss Annersley, don’t worry, it’s easy!”

“We’ll see,” the Head smiled in return, “Now go, I have work to do!”

The three exited the room, shutting the door behind them.

"Right, I'll be off too, Hilda," Miss Wilson began, "I've got a lot...."

“You stay exactly where you are, Nell,” Miss Annersley turned to her partner, “You and I must have a little talk!”

Joins the gang on the sofa. Lesley you must have known that the article would be called for!!! Laughing
However as long as we see the talk with Bill and Hilda surfing, the article could wait until the magazine returns from the printers as I would love to see the school's reaction and how Hilda deals with that!!! Laughing

Not too sure about this bit Confused

Miss Wilson made to object but one look at her partner’s face silenced her. Miss Annersley’s face no longer had the wide smile upon it, instead it was extremely serious, almost sad, as she stared across at her partner.

“As my Deputy, Nell, I expect a certain amount of loyalty,” she began, her tone very grave, “Indeed, that was the one thing I thought I could always rely on. So explain to me why you felt it necessary to conspire with some of the pupils of this School to force a decision from me?”

Miss Wilson’s face showed some shock, “Oh, Hilda, it wasn’t like that.” She tried smiling at her friend but was met with a totally impassive face with, perhaps, a hint of sadness in the eyes. “Look, the girls came to me to ask if I thought you could be persuaded to change your mind about the surfing. They were really keen and I just felt that if they had a little information it would cause you to change your mind. It was just some fun really, the girls and I never expected that you’d have the article published!”

“What else could I do, Nell?” The softly asked question, “the alternative was to allow a decision of mine to be influenced by some personal information, I couldn’t allow that!”

“Well, no, I see that now, Hilda,” the Deputy Head looked across at her friend very worriedly, “But that wasn’t the intention.” She walked over to place her hand on Miss Annersley’s shoulder, “You have no reason to doubt my loyalty, Hilda, I’m so sorry you should even think that!”

The Head stared at Miss Wilson for a few minutes before standing abruptly and walking over to gaze out of the window. “I really missed you, Nell, during the time you were suspended,” she said softly, “Oh I know you were at home, but you were not here. I’ve always been aware of how much I rely on your support, after this incident though, will I be able to do so in the future?” The Head’s shoulders began to shake slightly.

On seeing her friend start to cry, Nell Wilson looked distraught, “Hilda, please don’t think like this, you are my closest friend, my ‘better half’, I wouldn’t hurt you for the world, I…” She stopped suddenly and looked across at her friend more closely, “You’re not crying are you?”

“No,” the quiet reply,

“You’re laughing, aren’t you?”

“Yes!”

Nell Wilson took a deep breath, when she spoke it was only through sheer force of will that she didn’t shout the question, “do you mind telling me what the Hell you’re playing at, Hilda!”

Miss Annersley walked over to stand just behind her friend, she whispered in her ear, “did you feel terrible, Nell?” she asked.

“Of course I felt terrible,” Miss Wilson hissed, “I thought I’d really upset you!”

“Ah, upset me? You mean by forcing me to have an article published in the latest edition of the School magazine, one that makes me look a complete idiot! Then being responsible for me having to be up before 6am for the next ten days just so that I can immerse myself in an extremely cold ocean and try to learn a completely new skill! And then, finally, to show off said new skill to the entire School. Yes Nell, I think you may safely say you upset me!” The Head’s eyes flashed as she finished her speech.

“So you said all those things just to make me feel bad, then?” Miss Wilson was rapidly regaining her sense of humour and she smiled slightly at the Head.

Miss Annersley grinned, “Yes, I felt you deserved it!”

“You’re an evil woman, Hilda Annersley!”

#998:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Tue Feb 24, 2004 11:51 pm

Don't know really Lisa - I think a combination of the fact that I'm tired, I found it difficult to get right, and I wasn't sure if it was a feasible way for Hilda to act!

Judging by the first two replies it seems OK though! Laughing

I'll quite happily admit to believing that Hilda really was crying - brilliant writing Lesley, nothing to be unsure about whatsoever.
