#1: Robin's Diary Author: Elizaveta of Belsornia PostPosted: Mon Jan 26, 2004 10:32 am

I had a very good flight from Canada to Paris; we arrived ahead of time thanks to a tail wind. I have reported to La Sagasse in Paris, to spend the night and confirm my leave, and now I’m on my way to Interlaken. It will take all night, and takes me back to my schooldays, when we travelled to Austria, after spending holidays in England. The trains have improved a great deal since then. I’m getting very excited, and longing to see everyone again. I’m sure that I’ll get a chance to see the dear old school too.

I was quite nervous, walking along the road to Jo’s house! Isn’t that silly? I needn’t have been; Jo was very shocked when she saw me; in fact I thought for a moment that she was going to faint! We had a wonderful evening of ‘do you remember?’, and poor Jack must have felt totally left out. It was nice to see Len again. Photos fail to prepare you for the adult version of the child you knew. It might be easier if they were in colour, but the small black and white ones are very hard. Jo says she’s going to take me over to the school tomorrow, and give Miss Annersley a shock, too. I just hope they don’t parade me in front of the whole school! It’s not likely, as there isn’t anyone but staff who will remember me after all this time.
Jo has changed since she has found her sons again. I didn’t realise how much their loss had affected her, for she kept it all so close inside her, but now she is really her old self again. It’s wonderful to see, and Jack is delighted at the change.

We went over to the school today. Jo refused to tell Miss Annersley that I was here, as she wanted to give her a surprise. A shock would be more accurate, though she recovered very quickly and hid her reaction very well. We both saw it though. I never thought that I would see that sort of reaction from Hilda Annersley. She’s always so cool and collected, but she slipped tonight. I’ve been privileged to see another side of her tonight which I didn’t see when I was at school, naturally. She can be as bad a tease as Jo, for she played the same trick on poor Rosalie, and I thought she would faint at the shock. It’s real eye=opener to see the school staff from an adult perspective. Jo told me, but until you see such things for yourself, your viewpoint is still that of the schoolgirl, viewing figures of authority. I love seeing the other side of everyone.

It's great fun to see Robin's diary and compare it to Pat's story.

It would be even greater fun if we saw more of both of them!

On the train to Paris
This last week has been so much fun. I hadn’t realised how much I had missed all my old friends. They haven’t changed a bit really, though of course their experiences give them a more mature outlook. It was so funny seeing Hilda and Matey trying to hide their surprise when they saw me. They so very nearly succeeded that I’d have missed it if I hadn’t been watching them carefully. Jo caught them too, of course - very little escapes her - and how annoyed they were to be caught! Not that they said anything of course, but one learns to read people very well in a convent. I was rather surprised to find that there was more than coffee in Hilda’s cupboard. I suppose that is left over from the schoolgirl era. I have never been able to meet any of the staff as an adult, and it changes the way you see your teachers quite drastically. They become more human, more people in their own right.

Jo made me discard my habit for part of the time, and go skiing. I soon got my old skills back and had a wonderful time. I’m not sure that I should have agreed though, so I must tell Reverend Mother when I reach the convent. Any discipline I receive for it will have been worth the thrill of skiing again.

I do hope things settle down for Jo now. She has had such a traumatic few months since rediscovering her lost sons that she deserves a time of quiet to finish coming to terms with it all. She is very lucky that most people took the news so well. There are a great many people who would try to make life hard for her, even though nothing was really her fault. She has lost no friends over the affair, and has gained a whole new extension to her family. I wish that I had been able to meet them, but of course, they had returned to England by the time I was in Switzerland. Still, the girls were all lovely, which must reflect on the parents.

I have many promises of visitors this time - I did wonder why no-one came last time I was in Paris, but it turns out that they did not know until it was too late to arrange anything. We are entering the outskirts of Paris, so I must get my things together. I am looking forward to teaching again, though the break has done me the world of good.
