There was only one installment of story on the old board, so I have just reposted it here. Sincerely hope these links work!!!

PART ONE
PART TWO
PART THREE

Jem heaved a huge sigh and stretched. "Madge," he said. "I don't want to have to tell you all this. It was never my intention to drag Joey into this tale, although I was going to tell you about the girls after I had told them. Unfortunately, Joey forced my hand rather."
"In what way Jem? How did she manage that?" Madge asked quietly.
"She saw this letter Madge," said Jem, waving Margot's letter in the air. "I never meant for her to see it, indeed, I hadn't planned to let you read it. But Joey found it, read it and was planning to tell Daisy everythingherself. I felt I had to tell the girls myself, as their uncle, as their mother's brother; regardless of the fact that Daisy isn't my niece, I am still her uncle."

Madge's face thawed for the first time as Jem said this. This - this was the man she had married, the man she loved. A man who put other's feelings above his own, who could consider the needs of a little girl ahead of himself. In a rush, Madge knew she still loved Jem. He might find it hard to show her how much he cared sometimes, but when it really mattered, he was a loving husband, father, uncle, brother. When it really mattered, he came through.

Madge reached across the table and took Jem's hand. "Tell me Jem," she said softly. Gripping his wifes hand, Jem began speaking once more, telling Madge how Joey had come to be involved and to such a degree.

"You see Madge, when Margot first died, I was distraught. I had such a little time with her before hand. She was lost to me for so many years, and she had such an awful life in Australia, with a man she hated and couldn't get away from. She went through a living hell with Stephen Venables, but she survived, only to come back to me and die. That was so unfair Madge, I felt so bitter at her loss. But she asked us, as you'll remember, just before she died. She asked us to take her girls, to love them and provide them with a home. I promised Madge. I promised. Then she died, and I was given the letter amongst all her other possessions. Have you any idea how it felt to read that letter for the first time? How terrible I felt? I thought Margot had been laughing up her sleeve at me, at how gullible I had been to take on her girls. But then I looked properly at those girls. And do you know what I saw Madge? Do you?"
Madge shook her head.
"I saw two little girls grieving for their mother, the only mother they had ever known or wanted. Margot hadn't been making a fool of me, she had been protecting her children. When she took Daisy in, she took her not just into her home but into her heart. She loved Daisy as dearly as she loved Primula who was her own child, and as dearly as she loved her little boys. She never got over the grief of losing her boys, but never let that stand in her way of loving Daisy, the daughter of a man wha hated. So I had to look again at my feelings, and I began to understand why Margot had told me everything, why she hadn't just allowed herself to die without telling me the whole story. Because of courseDaisy's real mother used to be a mistress in your school. Mollie Maynard. Which complicated matters still further when Margot found her way to me.
"Margot had no idea that Mollie Maynard was a twin, and had even less idea when she first left Australia that she would find Molli's twin working with me. Margot found herself living in the heart of our community at the Sonnalpe, surrounded by our friends and my colleagues. It must have scared her half to death to find Jack maynard working alongside me. She knew you see Madge, that Mollie had no idea where Daisy was. Mollie had Daisy before her marriage, something Ken never knew about, and probably knows nothing about to this day. And Stephen Venables walked off with Daisy just hours after Mollie had given birth. I believe he did thought it would help her, if he thought at all. Mollie could never have survived with a child born out of wedlock, but Venables knew that one more child would mean nothing in the outback.
So there was Margot, and her two girls up at the Sonnalpe. And there was Jack Maynard. And there was I. It had so much potential for secrets to be found out, but they weren't, and when Margot died, the secret was still safe, Daisy and Primula were safe. Until one day, at the new San, I was reading the letter again. I thought about burning it Madge, but then I though how Daisy and Primula might one day feel a need to see it, for I knew their secret would come out one day. I left the letter on my desk when I was called away to an emergency, never gave it a second thought, until I returned to find Joey in my office, reading the letter. I never thought for a minute thatshe would have read it, I thought she was above that, but she said afterwards that she knew I had a secret and she wanted to know!
Then of course, her next question was whether Jack knew. He didn't, and I told Joey I intended to keep it that way, but she went on and on about how Jack had far more claim to Daisy than we have. She told me that Jack was Daisy's blood relative, and Daisy should be living with her true family. She went on and on, trying to get me to agree to something I knew Margot wouldn't have wanted, that eventually we reached the compromise that Daisy and Prim could spend as much time with Jack and Joey as they wished, but would continue to offically live with us. Madge, jack still doesn't know."

Madge was startled by all these revelations, but as she let them filter through her mind, she could see how it all fitted together, how Joey would consider herself to be in the right and try to push ahead with her own wishes rather than considering what was best for the children.
"So what happened yesterday Jem?" Madge asked.

Exclamation Well - I had a few thoughts on the girls parentage, some of them none to savoury, but that is certainly a dramatic twist.
And I knew that Jem wasn't really as bad as he looked at the beginning, thanks for showing the nice side of him.
As for Joey though, I'd quite like to wring her neck!
Please may we have more soon.

with all the twists we've had so far, we could discover that Joey was quite reasonable and that Jem is to blame.

But we'll never know till we get more, will we?

My goodness you lot are impatient! Wink I am hoping to finish this tonight, and I was going to save posting it until it was all ready to go, but I fear I may be lynched if I am spotted as being logged in and not posting! Here's the first installment for this evening!

"Yesterday I was a fool Madge. I took Prim over to Joey's to play as arranged, and Jack asked if he could have a word. Turned out Joey had broken the news to him only the night before about PRim and Daisy, I know," he continued in spite of Madge's wildly startled squawk. "I thought she would have told him when she first found out too. Turns out Jack knew nothing about it until Joey let something slip. Jack was furious with her Madge, he couldn't believe she would keep something like that from him. Anyway, when I was dropping Prim and Daisy off, he called me in and asked me if it was all true. We had a bit of a barney about it, mainly because he refused to believe it was true. Voices were raised and punches thrown, oh not by me!" he laughed.

"Jack punched you?" Madge asked incredulously. "Really? I wouldn't have thought him the type!"Jem had a sneaking suspicion that Madge was rather impressed by this sudden vision of Jack Maynard as a macho man, and wasn't sure he liked it.

"Yes, anyway, because of the noise, the girls overheard things, started putting two and two together and came out with a nice shiny four. Jack stomped off in his car, I think he went to send a telegram to Mollie, so the cat will be well and truly in the pigeons over in New Zealand by now, and I sat Prim down to tell her the truth. Daisy ran off before I had a chance to explain things properly. Is she ok Madge? I haven't asked where they are, I know they are safe, but are they ok? Will they come back to us?"

Madge stood up and walked round the table to Jem, allowing him to rest his head against her as she stroked his hair. "I think I need to go and explain all of this properly to Daisy, including the letter."
"Are you certain Madge? Do you think she is ready to read it?"
"I think after overhearing a little yesterday, she needs to know the whole lot now. Especially if Jak did go haring off to telegram Mollie. Goodness only knows what will happen there! Give me the letter, and I will go and talk to them both now, and while I'm gone you could give our children a little love and attention."

Jem gazed up into Madge's steady eyes. "Am I forgiven?" he asked hoarsely. Madge kissed him tenderly by way of answering, a kiss he returned with love and gratitude.

Madge drove along to Janie's house, thinking hard about all that she would have to tell Daisy. It would not be easy to explain to Daisy that her adored mother was in reality her foster mother, but knowing half the truth would be far worse if Mollie were to become involved at this stage. madge resolved to be nothing other than completely honest and truthful with the girls.

OK, next bit:

Daisy was delighted to see her Aunty Madge, until Madge explained why she was there.
"I don't want to know!" cried Daisy, turning her head away and refusing to meet Madge's eyes. "I don't want to know anything HE says at all!"
"What about what your mother has said Daisy? Would you listen to her?"

Tears began to fall from Daisy's blue eyes at this question, and she choked as she asked Madge "Why are you being unkind? You know I would have listened to her!"
"Well Daisy, there is aletter that Uncle Jem has, that your mother wrote to him, and where she explains things totally, far better than I can, and far better than Uncle Jem can. Would you read your mother's letter Daisy?"

Daisy looked up eagerly, her tears stopping almost instantly. "Really Aunty Madge? She wrote me a letter? Why did Uncle Jem not let me see it before?"

Madge slowly drew the letter out from her bag, and sat smoothing the folds considering her words carefully. "Because the letter isn't addressed to you darling. It is a letter your mother wrote to Uncle Jem, not long after Primula was born. I don't think she ever planned for you to read this letter, but I felt you might struggle less to believe it if you could see exactly what your mother said. Here you are," she added, offering the closely written sheets to Daisy.

Daisy took them slowly, suddenly afraid of what might be written there. She looked at madge with mute appeal, and Madge instantly taking pity on her took back the letter and began to read aloud.

When she finished, Daisy sat very still and white. "She wasn't really my mother?" she whispered.
"Darling, she WAS your mother, she is the only mother who held you and loved you all those years. Did you ever once feel unloved? Did you ever once feel unwanted? Your mother loved you wholeheartedly, with no bitterness or blame. You were an innocent baby, and she took you into her heart. She calls you her chldren, she cared enough for you both to try and protect you, even going as far as humiliating herself by writing this letter. She oculd have told no-one. She could have died and left questions and speculation in years to come, but she loved you enough to ask Uncle Jem to continue her love and protection for you both. Do you understand how much he loves you Daisy? Uncle Jem is very unhappy about ll of this too - your mother was also his sister. He had to accept some things about his sister that he wishes aren't true, just like you are wishing right now that all of this isn't true. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love you. It doesn't make him a bad person, and it doesn't make your mother a bad person. Your mother was a very unhappy woman who loved her two little girls an awful lot. And you mean a lot to Uncle Jem, becuase you meant so much to his sister. He wants to love you both as much as she did. We both want to love you, to protect you and help you as you grow older. We think of you as special members of our family. A precious gift given to us by your mother. People to love and cherish. We want you to be happy with us, to make your home with us, and to be content in life. However, I will keep my promise Daisy. I promised that if you didn't want to return to the Round House and Uncle Jem, I wouldn not make you do so. If that is what you want, I shall take you and Primula and we shall make our home elsewhere. As I said, you are precious gifts, and one does not treat a precious item with a lack of love and respect. I am going to go and have coffee with Auntie Janie now in the garden. Go and talk to Primula. Tell her as much as you wish at present, remembering how young she is. Talk to her and make a decision. Don't feel rushed, and don't feel pressured. I love both of you girls so much, it would break my heart to make you unhappy on purpose. When you are ready, come and find me, and we can talk again."

Madge dropped a kiss on Daisy's fair hair and quietly left the room, leaving a stunned Daisy to try and decide on her course of action.

*sad sigh* How awful! I'm glad Daisy at least feels loved by Madge, and I hope Jem will make up for his display of temper by loving her, too. As for Jo, she deserves to find out that SHE was adopted and has nobody in the world!

I just want to know why Jo was giggling so much Exclamation Exclamation It was so cruel, but I have to assume she had some reason for behaving like that Exclamation

#68:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 12:43 pm

I think she probably enjoyed the fact that she knew something that so few other people did! On the other hand, maybe she's jealous that her sister ended up Lady Russell while she never did, and now this stains that side of the family and leaves hers looking as white as snow! If that's the case, I say Jack should own up to having an affair! *willing to sacrifice myself to that cause*

I'm bliddy knackered!

I have spent the WHOLE day working away at my college backlog, and this is the first chance I have had all day to get on the computer! I really need to finish Prim tonight, so I can concentrate on college! I think things will be a little less frenetic (what a good choice of word Rachel! Why thankyou very much! you're welcome) once I get next week out of the way as I have a review of my entire work for the past year and a half. As long as I can get Prim sorted tonight, I will promise to be a good girl and keep up with Holocaust too, and try not to start any new drabbles for a while!

More Prim later after I've had a whisky or three!

College was actually yesterday - when I got told just how much stuff I have to take in next week that isn't or rather wasn't done at that point! I'm spending all day tomorrow at my parents - with my college stuff going too!

I hope to retain some vestige of sanity for next week, but if Prim suddenly becomes an alien and eats Jack, you'll understand why.

If you promise to be good little girls, i might try and finish this drabble off tonight - although I could cheerfully throttle Jack for dashing off like that to send a telegram! *************************************

Madge and Janie had been sitting quietly chatting in the garden for quite some time when a noise made the pair look round. Daisy and Primula were stood at the French windows, both still bearing the signs of tears on their faces, but both girls making an effort to control themselves now.
?I think I?ll just go and make a start on dinner,? said Janie brightly, moving past the two girls with a murmured ?Excuse me!?

Madge indicated two spare chairs, and Daisy and Primula crossed the garden and came and sat down.
?Well darlings?? asked Madge calmly. She knew how much was riding on the next few minutes, but she was prepared if necessary to sacrifice everything for these two girls who had nobody but her to look to. She would not fail them.

?We?ll?we?ll come home to you and Uncle Jem,? Daisy gulped out, amidst a fresh flood of tears.
Madge jumped from her seat and grabbed both girls in a ferocious hug. ?Oh girls, I am so pleased. I know Uncle Jem will be too. You are both so loved and wanted, I think it would have broken his heart to lose you.?
?Yours too?? asked Primula softly.
?But darling, I wasn?t going to lose you. I promised you both no matter what that I would keep you and love you and give you a home. That wasn?t a promise I was prepared to break.?
Primula and Daisy hugged Madge back and when Janie reappeared some time later, it was to find the three sitting on a rug, arms around each other and talking softly. Janie smiled at the scene, and slipped away back into the house.

That afternoon, Madge drove the two girls back to the Round House. Jem heard the car driving up the lane, and began pacing nervously, wondering whether Madge would be alone or not. His relief when he saw the two fair heads in the car with her was immense; he ran from the house, yanked open the car door and clutched Daisy and Primula to him whilst offering up a prayer of thanks.

Meanwhile, back at the Maynard house, Joey was in a very cross mood. Her husband had gone racing from the house yesterday and she hadn?t seen him since which she though was most unfair. She had given orders to her cook and housekeeper, and issued vague instructions to the nursery, and was sitting mending Jack?s socks in the living room feeling most annoyed. At last, the sound of the key scraping in the lock was heard, and Joey jumped to her feet.
?Where have you been?? she started angrily as soon as Jack Maynard entered the room.
?Where do you think?? replied Jack in a surly tone of voice. He too was cross; no, he was angry. His anger was at boiling point and had been for some time now, and the last thing he wanted was Joey cross-examining him.
?Well I do think I have a right to know. I?ve been rushed off my feet, looking after the children and everything,? she waved a hand vaguely in the direction of the kitchens, ?And I do think you ought to let me know if you aren?t coming home. It means such a lot of wasted work!?
?Not work for you at any rate!? shouted Jack, well aware that the ONLY domestic duty his wife undertook was the darning of his socks. How he hated that! The darns were always lumpy, the wool never quite matched the sock for colour, and the darns were lucky if they lasted an hour. He knew the only reason Joey darned his socks was so that she could sit in front of people and look busy, so that people would admire her, or take pity on her. Either way Joey didn?t mind ? it was attention!
?That?s not fair,? argued Joey, determined that Jack shouldn?t find fault with her.
?Tell me what else you do Joey. Do you cook the meals, do the shopping, make our clothes, mend our clothes, and look after our children? No! You let Anna do everything, except my socks!? There was no reason why Jack should be so focused on his socks today, it just seemed an easy thing to argue about instead of the real reason he felt so angry.

Joey felt her lower lip begin to tremble, and Jack looked at her in disgust. ?Don?t start that again Jo. I?m sick of you bawling your eyes out over the slightest thing! And if you want to know where I was, I was waiting for a reply to a telegram I sent to Mollie.?

Jo?s lip stopped it?s quivering instantly, and her eyes began to gleam. ?And what did she have to say? She must have been surprised by your news!?
?Surprised? More than that. Do you realise Jo that MOLLIE WASN?T EVEN IN AUSTRALIA WHEN DAISY WAS BORN? She was trying to teach you mathematics! Whoever Daisy?s mother is, it isn?t my sister!?

Jo sank onto a chair in shock. ?So who is Daisy?s mother then?? was the only thing she could think to ask.
?No idea,? replied Jack. ?And there will never be any way of finding out now. Margot?s dead, Stephen Venables is dead. The only person who knows now is the lady herself, and as we have no idea who she was, it is pointless to even wonder. Make your mind up to this Jo ? Daisy is no relation of ours, never was. We have no claim on her, leave the poor kid alone now. After all you?ve done to those kids, give them some peace.?

?Oh I shall Jack. That?s what I wanted to tell you yesterday. I?m going to be far too busy to think about those two girls in the near future. Very ?busy? indeed.?
Jack groaned aloud and put his head in his hands, resigned to his fate.

I had a similar problem when I used bablefish, it is to do with the language settings, even if you just quote a sentence it can screw the whole thing. I solved it by highlighting the whole text and then going through tools and language and selecting UK English and then ignoring the underlining for mispellings.

Why is it that in every single drabble (or most) Joey turns out to be a nasty so and so who craves being the centre of attention? Just a reaction against her centrality in the books or what?

#130:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:01 am

Thank you for that Rachel - disappointed that there is not going to be more (that's not a chant!) but like that it was finished so well.

Kathryn - I think that's it exactly - because she was so central to all the books and, by the later ones she was stretching all credulity to stay there! As I sadi in my profile - as a school girl and during the war years I really liked Joey, it was only as the series went on that she became Superwoman!

#131:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2004 11:44 am

I honestly don't get irritated by Joey when I read the books, but when I come here, I'm willing to be irritated by her, depending on the story!

Well, EBD does say, or heavily imply, that Joey did like to be the centre of attention, at least that's how I read it, so I suppose it's a natural development.

I'm so glad that Jack gave Jo a good telling off.

Did any of you notice that even in 'Rescue' when Jo was supposed to be looking after her children herself, she still managed to hive off a lot of the childcare onto the other three?
I think that that is the problem we all have with Jo. EBD admired her too much, and never brought her up to date, so those of us who grew up in the late 20thC & early 21st C just don't see her in the same light as her creator did.

Thanks Rachel that was great.

*wonders if anyone else notice that EBD_herself's posts go the same as Rachel's. You know the ? instead of " or '. Mystery or what?*

I think that happens with anyone cutting and pasting out of word - though it is a good theory.

It doesn't happen with me - not unless my posts look different to everyone else.

It seems also interesting that neither Rachel nor EBD_herself have posted for the last few days...

Oooh! For some reason I'd never thought of Rachel being EBD!!! Shocked

If you look at Rachel's profile, she's on AOL - so's EBD!!! Wink

My other suggestion for the post is Liss. She's also been missing for a few days.

I suggested Liss a while ago to a few people, too.

As its Friday the 13th is Rachel going to treat us to a special drabble?

#160:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 5:36 pm

Maybe if we'd suggested it earlier...

But she's still got 7 hours our time!

Oh, great! Lucky Rachel! Remember she's just been sick!

Only Joking,

Anyway there is bound to be another Friday 13th soon, so now she had plenty of warning

I must admit I wondered if Rachel would give us a Friday the 13th, but with a masacre promised for tomorrow I think we can sleep easy!

#166:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 8:02 am

Yes, I think we can all be satisfied with a massacre, too.

#167:  Author: VikkiLocation: Possibly in hell! It's certainly hot enough....... PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 8:34 pm

Well!! I'm glad you lot can all be so unconcerned by the upcoming massacre!!

But Vikki, you like massacres! Particularly Carolyn- and Rachel-massacres!
