#1: Peggy and the Hair Dye
Author: Lisa_T, Location: BelfastPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2004
6:00 pm Peggy Bettany looked morosely into the mirror in
her mother’s bedroom. She could only see the top of her face for Peggy was built
on a miniature scale, and when you’re only three, that’s very miniature indeed!
She scowled at herself and pulled one dark curl out so that it became a long
wavy strand. “Vat’s not nice,” she thought mournfully to herself. “I don’t
like that colour.” “What are you doing, Peggy?” came a masterful little
voice behind her, and she turned to see her slightly taller, and much sturdier,
twin brother. “I don’t like my hair,” Peggy told him sorrowfully. “It’s not
nice. I don’t like black. Black’s a bad colour.” Master Rix put his head to
one side and surveyed her. “I vink you’re right,” he said at last. “Ladies
shouldn’t have dark hair. Except Mummy,” he added. “I want hair like
Daddy’s!” Peggy told him. “Vat’d be nice,” Rix agreed. He stood and thought
again, before vanishing to reappear with a bottle. “Try vis,” he instructed
his twin sister. “Ayah says it makes things white. It make your hair white.”
Peggy, being a trusting little soul, did as she was told. The experience was
both unpleasant and excruciatingly painful, for bleach does not react well with
human skin. But the result was all that could be desired. Instead of the dark
locks, so characteristic of the Bettanys, Peggy ‘s head was now covered by fair
curls. Sadly, the effect was not permanent, but Peggy soon became so expert in
the use of bleach as a hair dye that even those members of her family who knew
the truth soon forgot it, and Peggy Bettany was henceforth always referred to in
terms of ‘silvery fairness.’
Reference: Head Girl, - letter from
Mollie to Madge. “Peggy is dark- like me, and Dick says, like Joey too.”
