I'm going to put up Part 3 here, since everything else is already archived.

--
Jack had no intention of rushing into anything, but he often found himself thinking of Lucy over the next few weeks. He had spoken to Madge, telling them of the girls and how attached they seemed to their brothers. As he had secretly hoped, Madge immediately declared her intention of inviting the four to stay for a weekend very soon. She had been very much taken with what she had seen of Edmund and Peter, in any case.

So it was, about four weeks later that the girls found themselves making their way up to the Sonnalpe, in company with their brothers. They were to be the guests of Dr and Mrs Russell. Susan had found herself the envy of the other Middles when they discovered where she was spending the weekend.

“Oh lucky you,” cried Joyce, who had often been a guest in the Russell’s home. “Mind you give Stacie our love” and the others agreed with her. In fact, Susan found herself overloaded with notes and various small gifts for Stacie, from her friends.

It was Joyce too, who told Susan how Mrs Russell, known fondly as Madame, to the school at large, had begun the Chalet School. A few years after its beginning she had married Dr Russell and had gone to live up on the Sonnalpe, retaining a financial interest in the school. Mademoiselle, her partner in the venture, had then become the headmistress.

Susan was very much interested in all of this and regaled her sister and brothers some of the tales told her by the others, as they made their way up the mountain side.

When they at length reached the Sonnalpe Jack Maynard was waiting for them, to lead them to the Russells’ pretty home, lest Peter and Edmund should not remember the way, as he explained, somewhat awkwardly. Edmund and Peter looked at eachother in amusement, but made no comment, other than to thank Jack for his thoughtfulness. Lucy hung back a little with Susan, allowing the three young men to walk a little in front of them, much to Jack’s disappointment, as he had been hoping to fall into conversation with her. This did not escape Peter’s notice, but he knew Lucy was not thinking of Jack in that way, so he hastened to draw Jack into conversation himself, until they reached the Russells’ house.

Madge was waiting out the front to meet them and came to greet them with outstretched hands. Lucy and Susan hung back shyly as she greeted their brothers and then Peter introduced them. Madge welcomed them also, and then led the party inside. Susan and Lucy were shown to a pretty white bedroom, which they were informed was to be their room for the duration of their stay.

“Oh please, Mrs Russell, may I see Stacie for a few moments?” begged Susan, who was longing to see Stacie again. Madge looked at Jack, a silent question in her eyes. He nodded.

“I don’t see any harm in it. She’s much stronger this week and it will do her good to see one of her friends. Only a few minutes, mind you, and you’re not to let her get too excited; it isn’t good for her.”

Susan promised and then, gathering up her bundle of notes and presents for Stacie, followed Madge down the corridor to Stacie’s bedroom. Lucy was left alone in the corridor with Jack Maynard. Peter and Edmund had gone to unpack their own things. Lucy earnestly gazed down at her shoes. She was not used to young men other than her brothers and had no idea what to say to Jack Maynard. However, Jack was used to school girls and hastened to put her at her ease.

“Come along,” he said cheerfully. “Come on down to the sitting room and we’ll see if Grizel and Juliet are about.”

Further along the corridor Susan was standing in Stacie’s pretty bedroom, gazing at her friend. Stacie was lying completely flat, but her eyes were open and she was gazing eagerly at the door, for she had heard the footsteps approaching. A cry of delight broke from her, for Madge had not told her that Susan and her sister would be coming up for the weekend.

Susan stood in the doorway somewhat shyly, but a gentle prod from behind recalled her to her senses and she moved forward to the invalid’s couch.

“Hello Stacie,” she said quietly. “I’m so glad to see you.”

Behind her, Madge nodded, satisfied that this new girl would not upset Stacie, and left quietly. Susan sat down on a chair next to the bed and gently laid her bundle in Stacie’s hands.

“We all miss you,” she said. “I’ve brought up heaps of things for you. I think almost everyone has written you a note, and there are some presents too, boxes of chocs and things like that”

“Really?” cried Stacie, flushing, for she had not expected this.

“Oh yes,” said Susan, “we’ve all been most frightfully upset about you. You know Stacie, I never got the chance to say this before. I’m really really sorry about the accident. Can you forgive me?”

“Of course,” replied Stacie gently. “I know you didn’t mean to grab me like that. And really, I suppose it all comes back to my stupid pride, which caused my original injuries. So it isn’t really your fault at all, silly.”

Susan could have cried with relief. She had blamed herself bitterly for Stacie’s condition and even Mademoiselle’s gentle counsel, the night she had unburdened herself, had not helped ease her guilt. Stacie’s calm sense seemed to have suddenly lifted an enormous burden she had been carrying around with her. The sudden relief made her suddenly want to howl, but she remembered her promise to Mrs Russell and she choked back the tears, although her eyes were suspiciously bright. Stacie, understanding very well how she was feeling, patted her friend’s hand.

“I vote we have some of those chocolates,” she said with a grin. “It’s your duty to help me eat them, you know, otherwise I shall be sick.”

“And no Matron Besley to dose you with castor oil,” giggled Susan, the tension gone from her face, as Stacie had intended. They opened the first box of chocolates and settled down for a companiable chat.

Lucy, meanwhile was in the Russells’ pretty sitting room, enjoying the company of Grizel and Juliet, who had returned from a day’s teaching at the Annexe. Juliet, Lucy learned, was headmistress there and Grizel looked after the music. The two older girls sensed Lucy’s nervousness and hastened to try and make her feel comfortable, breaking into a tale of the Chalet School in its earlier days, which soon had Lucy laughing, for it was a recount of the time that Jo, Simone, Frieda and Marie had powdered some of the Middles’ hair with cornflower.

“What a joke,” giggled Lucy. “How I wish I’d seen it.”

“Oh there are lots of funny stories from our earlier days here,” replied Grizel “and Jo’s in most of them. I never knew such a person for having adventures and getting into mischief. You’ve probably noticed that already, though.”

A shadow came over Lucy’s merry face and she sighed, but she could hardly tell tales of Jo to her oldest friends, so she said nothing. Grizel noticed it and wondered what was wrong, but felt that she did not know this new girl well enough to be asking questions.

Grizel had often been written off as having a hard streak in her, by some of those who had known her in her early days at the school. In fact, she had not been like that since she left the school. Her years under the gentle training of Madge and then Mademoiselle had had an effect. Her training in Florence and her friendship with Gerry Challoner had finished off what the Chalet School had begun. The rather thorny exterior with which Grizel had protected herself from the world had finally vanished. As a result, the Grizel underneath showed through most of the time and she was a kinder, gentler person sensitive to the moods of others and deeply compassionate. She still had a temper and she still disliked having teaching music imposed upon her, but had decided to make the best of it.

So, glancing at Lucy’s face she hastened to change the subject and brought up another tale of life at school, one in which Jo did not feature.

Here is one little new bit, but now I have to get back into the work, so no more today.

--

Susan and Stacie were chatting quietly about the Chaletian when Madge returned to fetch Susan to the salon.

“Susan may come back later,” she said, smiling at their disappointed faces. “Stacie needs to rest now.” Privately, she decided that if her husband agreed, Stacie should be carried out to spend some time with the others later on that evening. Her talk with Susan appeared to have done her good. Her cheeks were flushed faintly pink and her eyes were shining. Susan too, looked much happier. There was a light in her eyes that had not been there before. Madge saw it and wondered what had happened, not knowing of the turmoil that Susan had been in before she spoke to Stacie. Now that she had seen her and spoken to her, that terrible weight of guilt had finally lifted.

The two of them entered the room, where Jack, Peter and Edmund had joined the others. Lucy looked up at their entrance and noted that the shadow had gone from Susan’s eyes. She guessed that Stacie had something to do with it and rejoiced that she seemed to be back to normal.

“Just imagine Su!” cried Lucy. “Juliet was just telling us all of the time when some of your own, er partners in crime, as it were, decided to boil the clock!”

“What?” exclaimed Susan, “what do you mean?”

“Just that,” laughed Grizel, who then proceeded to relate the tale to Susan of Evadne and Co’s attempts to set the school clock to rights. Susan rocked with laughter at the tale. By now she was firm friends with Evadne and it sounded just like something her friend would get mixed up in.

The weekend proved to be an enjoyable one for all. Lucy and Susan relaxed in the company of the older girls, who made every effort to make them feel at home. That first evening, Stacie had been carried out and laid on an invalid’s couch and the assembled company had outdone themselves to entertain her. Grizel had been prevailed upon to play the piano for the others and Stacie lay back and listened with enjoyment. The softening of Grizel’s personality had had other effects and she now played with real feeling. Her musical training in Florence had truly honed her skills, and her music delighted her listeners.

Stacie then shyly requested that Lucy might sing for them. Word of Plato’s delight in the new girl’s voice had rapidly spread around the school and she had not had the chance to hear Lucy sing. With much shyness, for it seemed as though every eye was upon her, Lucy rose and went to the piano. With Grizel accompanying she sang a couple of ballads that Mr Denny had taught the girls that term. The others listened spellbound. Glancing sideways at Jack, Peter saw that he was gazing at Lucy with what Peter privately classed as “the soppiest of soppy expressions”. Had anyone else been watching it would have given away Jack’s feelings, but no-one else had noticed and in a few moments Jack had his features under control again. Peter sighed. All at once he was keenly feeling the responsibility of being the older brother of two extremely attractive younger sisters!

Finally, Juliet called for a game to round off the evening. They decided upon Charades, with Susan drawing up a chair to Stacie’s side and partnering her for the game, so that she should not be left out. The game continued until midnight, when Madge suddenly noticed the time and sent them all to bed with expressions of horror. She was afraid that the excitement might have been bad for Stacie, but was gratified to see the healthy colour and happy expression on the girl’s face.

Wonderful! But aren't Peter and Edmund rather surprised at the change (literally) in their sisters?

And what will happen if Lucy marries Jack and stays there?

So the weekend passed happily. There had been many walks – Grizel and Juliet had taken all four Pevensies on rambles to some lovely spots. Surprisingly, Jack Maynard had turned up for most of these, at first sticking close to Edmund and Peter and then gradually falling into step with Lucy and Susan and engaging them in conversation. By the time they had gone on a few walks together, Lucy had gotten over her shyness and became quite comfortable in conversation with him. Jack was content with this as a beginning. He could see that Lucy was not thinking of anything else at present and he had not been blind to Peter’s watchful eye on him!

Evenings had been passed in music, discussion and rather silly games at the Russell’s pretty home. The four Pevensies felt more and more at home and it was with rather a shock on the Sunday afternoon, that they realised it was time to go back down to the Tiernsee. Stacie was sad to see them go, especially Susan, but was comforted by Dr Russell’s promise that she might perhaps return to school in a few weeks, if she continued to make the progress shown over the weekend. Madge shared this news with Susan and Lucy, but asked them not to pass it on to the others as yet.

They said goodbye to Grizel and Juliet and to the Russells and began to make their way back down. Jack, who realised that it would look rather obvious if he went with them, had already taken himself back off to the Sanatorium, already hoping for another weekend visit soon.

“Goodbye Mrs Russell, thank you so much,” said Susan. “It was a wonderful weekend.”

“It certainly was,” agreed Edmund.

“I’m glad to hear it,” replied Madge gently. “I hope you will be able to come and stay with us again.” She waved her hand as the little party made its way down the mountain. Grizel vanished indoors to talk to Stacie and Juliet came to stand beside Madge.

“What did you think of our visitors?” she asked.

“Lucy and Susan are dear girls,” replied Madge. “We must have them up again soon. Susan was very good for Stacie, those two seem quite fond of one another. Lucy seemed worried about something though.”

Juliet nodded. “I thought so too,” she said thoughtfully. “It’s funny Madge, I had a sort of an idea that it was something to do with Jo.”

“What makes you say that?” asked Madge in astonishment.

“I had a lot of opportunity to talk to Lucy over the weekend and naturally I was asking her about school, how she liked it and so on. She was more than happy to talk about school, in fact, she seems to love being there, but whenever the subject of Jo came up, she just went, well, quiet. It happened on several occasions, otherwise I might have thought I was imagining it. I didn’t like to pry, so I never asked her if there was a problem with Jo at school.”

Madge nodded thoughtfully. Juliet went off to her own room to do some mending and Madge remained outside, thinking.

Here are a couple more bits, should keep you lot happy!

--
Unaware that she was under discussion, Lucy was talking to Susan and her brothers about Jo too.

“I thought I was just being over-sensitive at first,” she said, “but it’s obvious that Jo doesn’t like me. I don’t know why either. I haven’t done anything to her. From the first moment we were introduced, introduced properly, I mean, she’s been cold. Sometimes she’s downright rude. It’s a bit awkward, I mean she’s Head Girl for goodness sake. I’ve tried to avoid her, but we’re both Seniors so we’re in the same classes for almost everything.”

“Maybe she’s still annoyed about the way we all first met,” suggested Edmund, his eyes twinkling at the memory.

“Perhaps,” said Lucy slowly, “yes I think you’re right Edmund, but there’s something else and I don’t know what it is. Other people have started to notice it now, you know. I’ve caught Anne and Gillian staring at me a couple of times after Jo has cold shouldered me or been rude. No-one has actually said anything, but I can tell what they are thinking. I must have done something. You others know how I haven’t been to school before and I’ve probably done lots of things wrong in the way I talk to people. It must be just me,” she finished with a slight quiver in her voice.

#30:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:39 pm

Peter put an arm around his sister and hugged her. Even though Lucy appeared to the world as the older of the two sisters, she had never looked so young and forlorn to him and he was reminded of the little girl who sobbed so bitterly when they had refused to believe her tales of the land inside the wardrobe.

“It will be ok Lu,” he said comfortingly, “you’ll see. Maybe Jo will come around eventually. Just you stick with things and try not to let it get to you. Ed and I are always close by, you know. Just talk to Mademoiselle Lepattre whenever you need to come and see us.”

“And I’m actually at school with you,” broke in Susan wickedly, “even though I’m just your naughty younger sister!”

They all laughed at this and the tension was broken. Lucy felt better for having unburdened herself and they continued down to the Chalet where the girls said goodbye to their brothers and made their way to their respective houses.

“You know, I thought at first that Lucy was having an easier time than Susan, adjusting to the changes and everything, but now I think Susan has settled down much better than Lucy has,” remarked Edmund to Peter, as they turned into the little chalet which was home for the present.

Peter nodded his head. “Lucy may look almost grown up, but in a lot of ways she is still a little girl inside. Unfortunately for her, we four and Mademoiselle are the only ones who know it. It could get a little awkward later on because of that.”

“Maynard, you mean?” asked Edmund, who had also had his suspicions of Jack Maynard’s feelings towards Lucy.

“Yes,” said Peter briefly.

“Always thought it would be Susan giving trouble that way,” remarked Edmund. “But Lucy and then you’re the one who has to deal with it!”

“Don’t remind me,” groaned Peter. “But I think we’re safe for a while anyway” and the subject was dropped for the moment.

The other Middles greeted Susan rapturously upon her return to St Clare’s. Susan was able to give a good account of Stacie’s progress. Everyone wanted to know what Stacie’s reaction had been to all the notes and the presents.

“I think she was a bit overwhelmed actually,” said Susan thoughtfully. “At first she was surprised at getting them at all and then she was really pleased. And the chocs were jolly nice,” she added reminiscently. Howls of protest greeted this remark, but Susan merely grinned and said “well Stacie didn’t want to be ill, so I jolly well had to help her eat them. Don’t worry, she put away a good few on her own account!”

The other Middles giggled and no more was said about chocolates.

“We had a wonderful time at Die Rosen,” said Susan. “Mrs Russell is so kind and those other two girls, Grizel and Juliet were really nice too.”

“They were both pupils here, did you know?” said Joyce.

Susan nodded, “yes they told us that. They told us heaps of stories about you lot too. I seem to remember something about a clock!”

Evadne reddened and was heard to mutter something about “silly goops who couldn’t forget about a simple mistake”, while the rest of the Middles laughed.

“True enough,” said Cornelia. “But none of us have had half the adventures and alarums that Joey has had. I suppose they told you all of those too?”

“Well no, actually,” said Susan. “I don’t think so.”

Cornelia knitted her brows, for Susan’s tone was distinctly funny as she said this, but just then Kitty Burnett, who had been tilting backwards and forwards on her chair, gave a loud squawk as she and her chair parted company. Kitty crashed backwards onto the ground and the chair shot to the opposite side of the room. In the rush to pick up a rather dazed Kitty and her belongings and restore the chair to its proper place, before a mistress came upon the scene to investigate, Cornelia forgot all about it, but she was to remember later on.

Lucy also found herself answering questions about her weekend with the Russells. Mrs Russell was held in great affection by the whole school, but especially by the Seniors, many of whom still remembered her as their first headmistress. Lucy told of the many happenings of the weekend, many rambles with Juliet, Grizel and Jack and of evenings spent in music and games.

“It sounds like you all had a marvellous time,” said Anne enviously, when Lucy had finished.

“We did,” said Lucy. “It felt like being part of a family again. I’ve missed that.”

“Why what do you mean?” exclaimed Gillian curiously. “What’s wrong with your family anyway?”

“Oh nothing,” said Lucy in confusion. “That’s not what I meant. Never mind.”

Anne and Gillian eyed Lucy in wonder, for she was turning pinker and pinker, but the subject was dropped, much to Lucy’s relief. She did not know how to explain that she had not seen her parents for some time, was not even sure where they were and when she would see them again.

Having adventures in Narnia and being sent somewhere else by Aslan was all very well, she thought. It certainly has its drawbacks though. Especially when Mademoiselle forbade me to speak of it to the others!

They don't know where their parents are! They probably are in England, but Lucy doesn't really know, for all she knows the rest of her reality has changed as well, back in England. It would be hard to explain, even if Mademoiselle allowed her to, because none of these people know that WW2 is going to happen.

Maybe, but Lucy is dealing with going to school for the first time, finding that she has aged several years in the "real" world, dealing with the Jo situation and a whole host of topsy turvy things which she never expected. Poor girl!

Actually I was going to try and deal with the parent stuff later, but I'll see what happens. I seem to have enough threads to keep up with as it is!!

If you are feeling that, then the story is live to you and (I hear from other writers, having no real experience myself) that that is what true story telling is. It may be annoying and frustrating for you but this is coming alive for the readers and that has to be good.

Looking forward to the next instalment.

I agree with Pat. That is a proper story, and you will like it all the more when it's finished for the fact that, really, you didn't come up with it! It came up with itself! *admits to it happening sometimes* Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Thanks for the kind comments all. Here is another little bit. I have something else I want to work in, but it will have to wait until I go home and check one of my books.

--
Lucy had gotten this far in her thinking when the door of the common room opened and Jo and the rest of the prefects entered.

“Such a row,” announced Jo to the room at large. “Some of those asses of Middles have been messing around with the stationery cupboard – mixed up all the jars of ink and whatnot. How on earth they had the nerve to do it beats me. Bill has just discovered it – she sent Marie to fill the inkwells in one of the classrooms and she got red ink instead of blue. Bill went to investigate in the stationery cupboard and found that they had completely messed everything up – changed the labels around on all the bottles, you know. And all the chalks had been soaked in water and none of them are fit to write with! Bill is furious and they’re all in punishment until the culprit owns up. Probably that awful Pevensie girl, I shouldn’t wonder,” she added somewhat viciously.

Lucy stiffened in indignation at this slur on her sister’s character, but before she could say anything Anne had jumped into the breach on her behalf.

“Steady on Jo,” she said sharply. “Besides, both Lucy and Susan have been visiting your sister for the whole weekend so Susan couldn’t have done it. Besides, I doubt she even knows where the stationery cupboard is. Much more likely to have been Alixe and her crowd,” she finished with decision.

Jo glared at Anne and at Lucy, whom she seemed to see for the first time. She seemed about to retort something, but thought better of it and turning, left the room abruptly, closing the door none too gently behind her. The rest of the Seniors sat in stunned silence. There had been no mistaking the look of open dislike that Jo had flashed at Lucy and none of them could account for it. Marie and Simone glanced uncomfortably at one another and came over to speak to Lucy.

“I am sorry Lucy,” began Simone nervously. “I do not know why it is that Jo treats you this way. We three,” she indicated Marie and Frieda “are her closest friends and she has not confided in us about it. I do not feel the same as she however. I am sorry that I have not said so before. I know that you have been feeling uncomfortable.”

Lucy did not know what to say. She was still angry about the way Jo had spoken of Susan and the incident was just one in a long line that she had experienced since she had come to the school. She also was unsure about what to do next, never having experienced this kind of conflict before. To make matters worse, she felt sure that she was about to cry and really did not want to do so in front of the whole of the Senior School, however sympathetic they might be.

Oh, goodness, poor Lucy! Jo is really being horrible in this story! When is someone going to say something about it to her?

Gillian came to her rescue. She had greatly admired Jo ever since her arrival at the Chalet School and events during the previous term had strengthened her loyalty, but Lucy had become a firm friend and she was indignant at the way in which Jo continued to treat her. She could see the bright tears shining in Lucy’s eyes and knew that she would hate anyone to see them.

“I expect you want to hear the latest of your sister, Frieda,” she broke in abruptly. Lucy and Susan have just been up there this weekend, you know.”

“Oh yes, did you folk walk around to see Gisela?” said Anne, taking her cue from Gillian. Lucy collected herself with an effort, although her voice trembled a little.

“Oh yes, Grizel and Juliet took us there on Saturday afternoon. Baby Natalie is so sweet isn’t she?”

Frieda beamed happily at this and pulling up a chair, she sat down to hear of the doings at Das Pferd, her sister’s home on the Sonnalpe. Simone hesitated and then joined them. Marie, with a whispered word in Frieda’s ear, quietly sped from the room to find Jo. Someone, she decided, had to talk to Jo about this. It might as well be me, she reasoned. Jo may never speak to me again, but she is upsetting everyone by her behaviour. If friends may not speak honestly to one another then who can?

Marie ran through the corridors and out of the main school. Making her way back to St Clares and up to the bedrooms, she found Jo, as she had expected, huddled up in a corner of her bed and staring out of the window.

Marie closed the door behind her and then dropped into a chair near the bed.

“Why Jo?” she asked simply.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” growled Jo. “Leave me alone, can’t you!”

Quiet Marie looked at Jo and spoke with decision.

“All right then Jo, I will speak more plainly. You will probably be angry with me for doing so, but you are behaving in a most unfair way towards Lucy Pevensie and her sister. They are both nice girls and I can see no reason why you should treat Lucy the way you do. Probably,” added Marie with a flash of insight, “I have not been a very good friend to you, for if I had been I should have spoken sooner and not let it go this far.”

Jo jumped up from the bed and glared at her friend, most astonished that Marie should speak to her in this way.

“How dare you!” she cried. “You call yourself a friend and you come in here and talk to me as though I were a Middle. Perhaps you had forgotten that I am Head Girl!”

Marie whitened at her tone, for the interview was proceeding much as she had feared. Nevertheless, she pressed on, determined to finish what she had come to say.

“I do dare, Jo, because I am your friend and hate to see you destroying friendships the way you have been. Oh yes you have,” she added as Jo opened her mouth to deny this. “Surely you have noticed the way some of the others have been avoiding you for the last week or so? And I cannot bear to someone whose friendship I have always treasured, behaving so so badly. You are rude to Lucy, you turn your back on her, you take every opportunity to show her and all of us how much you dislike her. If we were all Middles, it would probably be seen as bullying.”

Jo had had enough.

“All right!” she cried “I’ve heard enough Marie von Eschenau. “You can go. It’s obvious that you don’t consider me good enough to be your friend any longer so I won’t inflict my company on you in future!”

Marie sighed and made for the door. She turned and looked back at Jo.

“We will still be friends Jo, when you want to be,” she said gently. “I will go now” and she vanished from view. Outside she stood in the corridor, tears streaming down her face, for the conversation had cost her a lot and she feared that Jo would never want to be friends with her again.

Marie spoke to no-one of this conversation, not even Frieda, but the results of it were soon plain to everyone. Jo would barely speak to Marie, addressing her with icy politeness when it was absolutely necessary. The rest of the school were ago with curiousity but after Kitty Burnett had nearly had her head bitten off by Marie for asking about the coolness between the two girls, nobody dared mention it to either.

“And no-one knows what to do,” said Carla to Gillian, Anne and Lucy a few days later. “Prefects’ meetings are so uncomfortable now. Poor Marie barely opens her mouth and Jo snaps at her when she does. Frieda and Simone are caught in the middle of it all and neither of them know what to say, half of the time.”

“It’s dividing the whole school,” said Gillian sadly, as she caught sight of Jo striding over the playing fields ahead.

“We should do something,” said Lucy.

“What can we do?” objected Anne.

“I don’t know,” said Lucy. “I wish As…,” she stopped suddenly and the other three stared at her.

“What were you going to say?” asked Gillian curiously.

“It’s nothing,” said Lucy. “Just forget it.”

Not for the first time, Gillian and Anne had the feeling there was something their friend was not telling them. Lucy guessed what they were thinking and went pink. She was thankful when Cornelia came tearing over to them.

“Hi,” she gasped. “Bill has sent me to tell you all that we’re going up to the Mondscheinspitze, for a long walk. Frau Mieders has said we should collect strawberries. I was sent to tell everyone to go and get ready and we’re to meet out the front in ten minutes.”

“What a topping idea!” cried Anne in delight.

Lucy privately agreed. The walk might prove to be a welcome distraction for all of them. She was not alone in this belief. The tension in the school had not gone unnoticed by the staff and it was Miss Wilson and Miss Stewart who had come up with the plan of taking the Seniors and the Middles on a long walk “to shake the fidgets out of them,” as Miss Stewart had put it. Of course, if she had known what was going to happen up on the Mondscheinspitze, she might have suggested a quiet afternoon of reading out in the gardens …

A bit more for you. I won't get it all done today, but I should get up to the next cliff done ... he he he

--
Anne, Gillian and Lucy joined the other Seniors out the front of the main house. At St Clare’s they could see the Middles beginning to emerge. Lucy saw Susan, her arm tucked companiably through Joyce’s, chattering excitedly to Corney and Evadne, as they waited for the other Middles to assemble.

“Be my partner for this?” said Gillian to Lucy, as they began to form pairs, for they were to “croc” through Briesau, before striking up to the Bärenbad Alpe. Lucy assented delightedly. As it happened she had missed all of the other long walks of the term, so she was looking forward to the adventure. Gillian laughed at her excited face.

“Anyone would think we were about to fall into an exciting adventure. But we’re not, my child, merely going to pick strawberries. It will be a topping walk though.”

The Middles came up to them at this juncture, walking demurely in pairs and led by Jo. Unusually for her, she was walking alone. Walking at the end of the group came Simone and Frieda, with Marie between them. All three were talking quietly and seriously and the other Seniors wisely made no comment at the sight, although it was plain that there was still trouble between Jo and Marie. Sophie Hamel moved over to join Jo at the front of her line of Middles. Jo, who seemed to be lost in a world of her own, barely seemed to notice.

Once all were assembled, Miss Wilson gave the word and the group set off , passing scores of people, for the day was hot and there were many tourists who had elected to take the same walk, in order to partake of Kaffe and wild strawberries and cream at the little Gasthaus on the Bärenbad Alpe.
Once the alpe was reached however, the girls turned aside from the Gasthaus and made for the valley of flowers, heading for the neighbouring alpe and the little village of Mechthau.

#77:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 5:44 am

Once the Gasthaus was past, Miss Wilson gave permission to break ranks and the girls at once formed themselves into groups. Lucy and Gillian were joined by Anne and her partner Louise Redfield and they strolled along admiring the scenery and pointing out various landmarks to Lucy – the peaks of the Tiernjoch, to the north, and below them, the waters of the Tiernsee they had left.

From the narrow isthmus, which joined one alpe to the next, they passed over a rough pasturage where pines were growing, and finally, came to the valley of flowers.

“How beautiful!” exclaimed Lucy, dropping to her knees to drink in the scent of the beautiful blossoms. Indeed, the whole valley was starred with flowers: narcissi, wild roses, pansies and other blossoms. The other girls followed her example and most of them began to pick enough flowers to make small bunches of the blossoms. In her excitement, Lucy began to range farther and farther away from the others. In so doing, she bumped into Jo, who was standing apart from the others and looking on, although normally she would have delighted in the beauty before her and joined in the flower picking with the rest.

Lucy gave a startled “oh” and dropped all her flowers. The head girl glared at her and began to stalk away, making an impatient noise. That did it! All at once Jo’s scornful treatment of her, every slight and every hostile nuance, every hurtful incident, it washed over Lucy in a wave, leaving her trembling and angry.

“That’s right,” she shouted. “Walk away again like an offended camel, just like you always do. What’s your problem anyhow? I’m sick of it. You behave as though my very existence offends you. Well, I do exist and it’s time you dealt with it. I’m tired of the way you always treat me. You turn your back on me, you turn up your nose at me, you sneer, you act like I’m some kind of, some kind of leper or something. I haven’t done anything to you, nothing that I know of, anyway and I don’t deserve to be treated that way!”

Luckily for Lucy, both she and Jo were too far away for anyone in authority to hear them. Across the other side of the meadow, Gillian caught sight of Lucy confronting Jo and nudged Anne. Neither of them could hear, but it was obvious that Lucy was confronting Jo about something. Both girls looked flushed and angry.

“Should we do something?” said Gillian.

“I don’t think we should intefere,” said Anne wisely. “We’re too far away to stop Lucy and anyway, we can’t hear what she’s saying. By the time we got there it might be all over.”

But Gillian was too conscientious to leave it at that.

“Lucy really shouldn’t shouldn’t have gone so far away from everyone by herself,” she said uneasily. “She’ll catch it from Miss Wilson if she’s seen. Perhaps we should just stroll over and persuade her to come closer to the rest.”

“All right then,” said Anne easily. “I’m done with picking anyway. Coming Louise?” Louise agreed and the three of them made their way over to the spot were Lucy and Jo were facing one another.

#78:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 5:55 am

Meanwhile Lucy’s words had struck home with Jo, for deep down she knew that her behaviour towards Lucy really had been unconscionable. However, she was not yet ready to admit that to herself or to anyone else. She had turned sharply to face Lucy, as the latter began speaking and now she walked towards her, her face flushed in anger.

“How dare you speak to me that way!” she shouted at Lucy. “No-one talks to me like that, no-one!”

“Well perhaps it’s about time someone did,” said Lucy in disgust. “I think it’s unbelievable the way you treat people. It’s not just me, it’s everyone. You seem to think that you can say anything you like and it doesn’t matter how it makes people feel. You make me sick,” she wound up, turning her back on Jo and beginning to walk away.

“Oh no you don’t,” yelled Jo, springing after her and catching at her arm. She was clutching it and was about to say something more, when the earth beneath her seemed to give way. With a wild scream, she vanished from view, followed by Lucy, who had been unable to free her arm.

With a shout, Anne, Gillian and Louise rushed up to the spot where Jo and Lucy had just been. Almost at their feet was an enormous, gaping hole, seemingly reaching to the bowels of the earth. Jo and Lucy were nowhere to be seen!

Here's another bit, I'll post it as I write, I don't want you lot hurting yourselves on that cliff. (Although the bouncy castle sounds like fun ...)

--
Lousie took charge at once.

“Anne, you’re fastest, scoot off to Miss Wilson or Miss Stewart, whichever is nearest and tell them what’s happened.” Anne took one swift look at her face and then rushed off, faster than she had ever run before.

Louise turned to Gillian, “I’m going to get as close to that hole as I can and call out. Maybe they can hear me. You get behind me and keep tight hold of my legs.” So saying, she lay full length on the ground and wriggled as close to the hole as she dared. Gillian braced herself against a rock and kept a tight grip on Louise’s legs. Louise cupped her hands round her mouth and called down.

“Jo! Lucy! Can you hear me? Are you ok?”

She waited hopefully, but no answering cry came back. Louise tried again and again and again, with no response. Behind her, Gillian bit her lip in an attempt to suppress her sobbing. She looked around in relief as both Miss Stewart and Miss Wilson arrived at a run, followed closely by Anne. Behind her, the remainder of the prefects were attempting to hold back the other girls, who were now aware that something was badly wrong.

#100:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 6:05 am

“Gillian! What has happened?” exclaimed Miss Wilson sharply, as she caught sight of Gillian’s tear-streaked cheeks.

“It’s Lucy and Jo, Miss Wilson,” sobbed Gillian. “They were standing just here and the ground seemed to give way underneath them. They’re down there, down that hole. Louise has been calling and calling to them, but they don’t answer!”

Miss Wilson’s lips set in a grim line. “I see,” she said and turned to her colleague.

“Con, we need men and a rope, probably several lengths of rope. Send Simone to the Gasthaus to get help.”

Miss Stewart nodded and beckoned to Simone who came running over at once. Miss Stewart spoke to her briefly and then sent her running to the Gasthaus with her message. She was to ring up the school also and let them know what had occurred.

Miss Wilson bent over Louise, who was still calling desperately into the hole. By now, reaction had set in and she was shaking and sobbing as she continued to call out to Lucy and to Jo to answer her. Miss Wilson said nothing, but pulled the girl to her feet. Gillian came forward and took Louise from the mistress and helped her to sit down against a big rock.

“Simone has gone for help,” she said, “the men will be here in no time.”

Louise shook her head hopelessly. “They didn’t answer me,” she whispered hoarsely. “I called and called and they didn’t answer me.”

Gillian sat next to Louise very quietly, trying to ignore the cold fear that was beginning to take hold of her. Lucy had to be all right. She just had to.

You don't think this is a cliff?

There now came a cry from behind them and Gillian turned to see Susan fighting to get through. She had just realised that Lucy was missing and had realised something had happened to her. Frieda and Marie were attempting to hold onto her, but she was fighting them off and sobbing as she tried to run forward to Gillian and Louise. Miss Stewart acted at once.

“Frieda, take her to the Gasthaus and look after her. Yes Joyce, you go too,” as Joyce broke away from the group and rushed over, to comfort her friend. Between them, they began to drag Susan away and towards the Gasthaus.

“Lucy!” screamed Susan “Let me go, she’s only little, I have to find her. Let me go!” She began to struggle again, but Frieda was firm and Susan found she had to go with her. Miss Stewart watched them go in relief and then turned to the other girls.

“Girls, I ask that you form yourselves into lines now and go back to the school. The prefects will take charge of you and I know I do not need to tell you how important it is that you be sensible. Go at once to your common rooms school and when you are back at school Matron will see to you all.”

The Middles and the remaining Seniors, very subdued, formed themselves into lines and began to make their way back to the school, led by Sophie and Louise. Simone’s phone call from the Gasthaus had alerted Matron and she was waiting for them. All the girls found themselves marched off to hot baths and then dosed with warm milk. Louise, who was still deeply shocked, was sent straight to bed. Anne and Gillian had remained behind with the mistresses, as had Marie and Simone.

#103:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 6:32 am

There was another shout and the little group turned to see a group of men running towards them, followed by a breathless Simone. The first few men carried stout sticks and thick coils of rope and flashlights. Marie recognised the last two men running behind them. It was Peter and Edmund. They had been enjoying a quiet afternoon at the Gasthaus and had been there when Simone had rushed in with her pleas for help. Thinking that they might be of some use, they had rushed after the men to offer their services. They had passed Frieda, Susan and Joyce on the way and so had heard that it was their sister who was in trouble, perhaps gravely injured.

Lucy was not hurt at all, in fact she was enjoying the delightful sensation of flying on a cushion of air. She had been terrified when she had been dragged into the hole with Jo, she had screamed loudly, in fact. For a few minutes she had felt herself falling helplessly and felt sure that she would be killed. Then all at once, she felt a warmth and a strange softeness all around and beneath her and her fall seemed to slow. Everything seemed to slow down.

I wonder if this is how it seemed to Alice, when she fell down the hole the White Rabbit went into, thought Lucy and gave a giggle to herself. It seemed ridiculous to be thinking such things when she had just fallen down the deepest hole she had ever seen in her life, with no idea how she was to get out again. Somewhere nearby she could hear loud sobbing. After a while she realised that it must be Jo, although she could still see nothing.

Lucy thought that perhaps she should call out, but she felt strangely drowsy and the words would not come. To her great surprise she felt her eyelids drooping and she fell asleep almost before she had time to think anymore.

Oh, good for Aslan! I just hope isn't Lucy injured. I loved the way Gillian was more worried about Lucy, not Jo!

Oh please post more soon! Are they going somewhere else, like Narnia? It would do Jo good to go there.

Thanks for the exta bits, but I'll leave the Castle where it is, 'cause we are still on the edge of cliff.

Also love the fact that Gillian was worried about Lucy and not Jo

I wonder if anyone noticed that Susan said that Lucy was "just little". To the other girls, Susan is the little sister!

Thats exactly what I was thinking! Although I suppose in the shock of the thing no-one picked up on it. Considering that the only time I've read any of Narnia (I hang my head) is reading the occasional chapter to one of the boys I babysit, im feeling rather confused!

Thank you Cathy - but would really like more! I assume Lucy is being supported by the breath of Aslan - but why is Jo crying?

Presumably because she wasn't, and hurt herself!

Here's a bit more. We didn't go to Newcastle after all, so I have time to write.

--
Jo was terrified. She had forgotten that Lucy had fallen down the hole with her, in fact, from the moment that she had felt herself falling, she had not really been aware of anything around her. She could not see anything, it was pitch black and the darkness felt oppressive. She began to sob, frightened, alone and cold, aware that there was no-one to hear her or to help.

No-one will care if I die down here, she thought miserably. I’ve made them all hate me.This was not true, of course, but fear and loneliness do not make for rational thought. Her mind was flooded with images: Stacie, lying flat and still in a bed, while Jo chattered and chattered, not noticing the tears falling down her friend’s cheeks, Lucy’s face the first time Jo had snubbed her, various Middles who had been on the receiving end of her bad moods at St Clare’s and finally Marie’s face, pale and set, as Jo had flung their friendship back in her face.

Jo’s rapid fall suddenly slowed down and an invisible presence seemed to be there, holding her up and cushioning her fall. But unlike Lucy, Jo could not take comfort in it. The darkness was so oppressive and so cold that she simply did not notice that she did not seem to be falling anymore. To her, it was if she was plumeting down to a deep, dark, lonely hole, on a descent that seemed to take forever.

“Help me!” she sobbed. “Please, someone …”

Still trying to write the next bit. Here's the last little bit for now.

--
A warm breath seemed to tickle her cheek and then Jo felt, rather than heard, a slow deep whisper all around her. The darkness seemed to lighten, just a little.

“Sleep.”

Jo sighed and her eyelids became heavy. The terrible fear left her and she fell into a deep sleep. There was no sound, as the two girls continued on their jouney into the darkness.

#121:  Author: KBLocation: Berlin, Germany PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 10:27 pm

So will they both be unconscious when they're dug out?

#122:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 10:49 pm

Above, the rescue party was still frantically trying to make contact with Jo and Lucy, as the men began roping up, preparatory to lowering themselves into the hole after the girls. Anne, Gillian, Marie and Simone found themselves shunted to one side and did not dare protest, lest Miss Wilson remember their presence and send them back to school. They huddled close together for comfort against a big rock and waited.

“Do you know how it happened?” asked Marie finally, more to break the dreadful silence, than anything else. Gillian stared down at her shoes and did not reply. Anne answered drearily.

“Lucy had wandered away from the rest, I think Jo had too. Anyway, somehow they ended up together. I don’t really know how it happened, but we looked over and they seemed to be having some kind of argument. We were trying to wander over casually and get Lucy back to the others, but we didn’t get to them in time. Lucy had turned her back on Jo and she was walking away and that’s when it happened. Jo jumped at her and grabbed her arm and then they both seemed to vanish. It was like the earth came to life and just swallowed them both up.”

#123:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 10:55 pm

Simone put a comforting arm around Gillian who was struggling to contain her tears.
“We must trust le bon Dieu to watch over them both,” she said quietly, for her faith was real and very deep. Gillian nodded and looked up at the sky.

“I sort of feel like praying now,” she said awkwardly, “I feel so helpless, just like when mummy was so sick a few months ago.”

Huddled against the rock, the four girls joined their hands and began to pray for the safety of their friends, hoping against hope that they would be found safe.

#124:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2004 11:03 pm

Lucy opened her eyes. She was lying on soft earth, but she did not remember landing there. It was still dark, but light seemed to be coming from a direction somewhere to her right. Next to her she could make out a slim, still figure. It was Jo. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to be not unconscious, but sleeping peacefully. As Lucy watched, she sighed, rolled over towards her and then opened her eyes. As was her habit when awakened, she woke up completely and sat up suddenly.

“Where am … Lucy!!!” as she suddenly caught sight of her. “Now I remember, we fell down that hole, didn’t we? What happened? Where are we?”

“I have no idea,” said Lucy composedly, “but there seems to be some light coming from that direction over there, so I suggest we head that way and perhaps we can get out of here.”

Jo looked doubtful at this suggestion. She knew, as Lucy did not, that there was a system of subterranean passages underneath much of this area, and she was afraid of becoming hopelessly lost. However, she could see the light as well, and it certainly suggested the possibility of an outside opening not too far away.

“All right then,” she said, getting up and dusting herself off. “Let’s go then.” She reached down and held out a hand to help Lucy up. Lucy took it, in some surprise and the two of them began walking towards to the light, hoping it would lead them to the outside world again.

There is no next bit ... yet. I'm still trying to write it. I don't think there will be any more today, because it's Australia Day and we're going into the city to catch the happenings. Hopefully while I'm wandering around inspiration will strike so I can write the next bit the way I want it to be, if that makes sense.

In answer to the various questions though, the light they are walking towards does take them somewhere ...

I'm here, I'm here. I just have so much going on at the moment. The kids are home from Malaysia and we've been flying around doing all the back-to-school stuff in a couple of days and then there's been choir stuff for both and new uniforms and fees and work and work and work and work and I need to ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

I've been applying for a promotion at work too and I haven't had a moment to spare for doing things like writing. I have one new bit, but it's only little, sorry. I'm just so tired I just need to go to bed. Here it is, anyway.

--
Lucy was right. It was definitely lighter in the direction they were walking. They seemed to walk for miles. Lucy had no idea how long they had been walking, but her feet ached and she felt so hungry. It feels like years since breakfast this morning, she thought, with an inward sigh. She stole a glance at the silent girl walking next to her. Jo’s face was serious, almost stern and she was staring down at her feet. She appeared to be deep in thought as she walked. Lucy decided it might be better not to try and talk just then. She was just wondering how much longer she could walk, when quite suddenly, a large opening loomed up in front of them.

“At last,” exclaimed Lucy in some relief. “I’m so tired, I just want to sit down.”

She stumbled forwards to the opening and stopped dead as she did so, causing Jo to bump into her, with a muffled “ouch!”
“Sorry,” apologised Lucy, “it’s just, well, see for yourself.” She stepped aside and Jo saw what had so astonished her. There before them, green and lush and fragrant, was the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.

Here is a little bit more. RL is calling today though, so I don't expect to write anymore. But I can sort of see where the story is going next, so I don't think it will take me long to write some more, when I get back to it. Hubby is cleaning the house up and has politely (but firmly) requested some help, so I'd better go and offer my services!

--
Lucy and Jo stepped out into the garden. It was very very still, not even the sounds of birds or small animals moving could be heard. It was obviously lovingly tended, great rose bushes stood here and there, bearing evidence of tender care. Enormous green trees towered above them, casting refreshing shade over the plants and flowers before them. In the very centre of the garden stood an enormous fountain. Lucy could faintly hear the rippling of the water as it rose into the air and fell again. It made the most delicious sound she had ever heard. Eager to be closer to that sound, she found herself walking towards the fountain. The tiredness and the aching seemed to have vanished and she felt alert and refreshed, just as if she had had a lovely sleep, followed by a long cool drink.

Jo meanwhile, was standing in astonishment, gazing about her. Where were they? She knew the Tiernsee and its surrounds fairly well by now and she had never heard anyone speak of such a garden. Why, some of the plants she didn’t even recognise. The trees were obviously extremely old, some of them were so massive. Not noticing that Lucy had already vanished into the distance, towards the fountain in the centre, Jo began to wander around, stopping often to smell a flower or gently touch a plant. Her wonder increased with every step she took, for she saw such richness, such detail, such care in the planning and tending of the garden that it awed her.

The gardener who takes care of this place must work all the time, she thought. It’s the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

I'm back! I've had an unbelievable amount of stress going on and I had a job interview yesterday, for an internal promotion. Now it's all behind me and my plot bilby has come back. I also can't sleep, so I got up to write.

--
Jo soon came to a small clearing, where stood a large tree, with grey, smooth bark and bluish-green foilage. Hanging from a branch were a small horn on a leather strap and a small bottle of what looked like glass or crystal, containing some kind of liquid. A sign in some kind of script hung near these items. It seemed to be written in an unfamiliar language and Jo felt sure that she would be unable to read it. However, she decided that she must have been mistaken, for as she gazed at it, the meaning of what was written became clear to her.

These treasures are for the traveller who comes here unawares. Take heed, lest you use them unwisely. These are Queen Susan’s horn – in time of great need or danger, some kind of help shall come to the one who blows on it; and Queen Lucy’s cordial, for the tending of dire wounds or sickness.

Jo stared in astonishment. Queen Susan? Queen Lucy? Surely not. It must just be a coincidence, she thought, as she slowly removed the horn and the cordial and hung them about her neck.

WooHoo it's back!

Good luck on the promotion, Cathy.

#211:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:40 pm

Lucy, meanwhile, was sitting dreamily on the edge of the fountain, letting her hand dip languidly into the clear water. Her head was resting comfortably against the back of the fountain and her eyes were half-closed. She had forgotten her tiredness, or that she was hungry and thirsty. She was listening to the sound of the water rising and falling. It was almost like music.

Lucy became aware of warm, fragrant breath on her face. Aslan! she thought, sitting up abruptly and opening her eyes. But to her great disappointment, there was no Aslan in sight, only the trees and flowers of the garden and the stillness. Wondering if she had been mistaken, Lucy stood up and shook herself. She wondered how long she had been sitting there. I must have been half-asleep, she decided. Bending down, she drank deeply from the fountain. The water was fresh and sweet. Lucy felt refreshed and strengthened. Straightening her shoulders, she turned to go on and cannoned straight into Jo!

#212:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:43 pm

Lucy staggered and opened her mouth to aplogise, but stopped as she saw what Jo was carrying. “My cordial!” she gasped. “Where did you get it? Did Aslan give it to you?”

Jo stared at her. Had Lucy hit her head when they fell in the hole? Who or what was Aslan and how did Lucy know about the cordial? She continued to stare speechlessly at Lucy.

“Well?” exclaimed Lucy, somewhat impatiently. “Where did you get it? And you have Susan’s horn too. We wondered what she had done with it. We took it with us the day we went hunting the White Stag. That was the day we …” she broke off, remembering how she and Jo had first met.

Jo sank limply down onto the edge of the fountain. Usually so self-assured, her balance had been jarred by their sudden descent into the dark hole and the terrifying fall. Now they seemed to be in some strange place and she was not in control of what was happening at all. She didn’t like it one little bit. Lucy seemed to have changed too. She seemed somehow, to be stronger, almost, well, statelier. What was happening?

#213:  Author: pimLocation: St Andrews (right next to the beach) PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:46 pm

Shocked Wow Cathy, just read all of this in one sitting, and am very glad I missed all the cliffs - get the feeling I would have fallen off all of them.

#214:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:53 pm

Lucy reached forward and gently removed the cordial from around Jo’s neck and hung it around her own. Now she felt better. Having the little bottle there made things seem more familiar. Now she was sure that she was back in Narnia and that Aslan was somewhere near. “Thank you Aslan,” she murmured. She turned to Jo. “Let’s go,” she said simply and held out her hand to help Jo up.

“Go where?” asked Jo. “Wherever it is that we are supposed to go,” replied Lucy at once.

Again, Jo stared at her blankly. What was the girl talking about?

“Er, wouldn’t it be better to wait hear to be rescued?” she said.

Lucy laughed. “No, I don’t think so,” she said. Where we are the Chalet folk can’t get to us. We’re in Narnia now and we can’t get back until Aslan sends us. Don’t worry,” she added hurriedly, seeing the look of horror and fear that came into Jo’s face. “Aslan won’t let anything happen to us.”
“Narnia,” repeated Jo slowly. “Didn’t your sister say something about Narnia the day you …”

“Came out of your wardrobe, yes.” Lucy finished her sentence for her. “We came out of Narnia and ended up in your room. We don’t come from here. Our home is in London, you know. We were sent into the country by our parents, because of …” she stopped abruptly, suddenly realising that none of the events of her early childhood had even happened yet. Perhaps it would be better not to mention any of that. No need to frighten Jo anymore than she was already.

#215:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 5:58 pm

Oh wonderful - thank you Cathy!!! I'd forgottent that LWW started during wartime Britain - so it's in the future for Jo and co.

Lots more please (and hope you get promotion!)

#216:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 6:01 pm

“Anyway,” she continued. “We were staying in the country in the house of someone my parents knew. It’s a very old house, with lots of rooms. One day, we all climbed into a wardrobe in one of the rooms, to escape from the housekeeper and a whole lot of people who had come to see the house. But we discovered that we were in Narnia. We were there for years and years and years and when we came back to our world, instead of finding ourselves back in Professor Kirke’s house, we ended up coming out of your wardrobe,” she finished in a rush.

Jo stared at her. It was all nonsense of course, but somehow made sense, at least in this setting. “So, what about your parents?” she asked. “Where are they?”

“I don’t know,” said Lucy sadly. “I haven’t seen them in months and months. I don’t even know how to contact them. I don’t think it would be a good idea though.”

“Why?” asked Jo curiously.

“Because we didn’t just come back to a different part of our world,” said Lucy slowly. “We also came back to a different time. All the things that happened to us before we went into the wardrobe, well, they haven’t happened yet. I can’t work out exactly how far in the future my parents are, not too far I think, but I think I’m either not born yet or I’m quite a small child. It would give my parents a horrible shock if I suddenly contacted them now, even if I could.”

One last bit and then I'm back to bed, I think I'll be able to sleep now. Sorry for the repeat post, I'm having a lot of trouble with the board this morning.

--
“The future!” exclaimed Jo excitedly. “Why then, you can tell me what has happened, in history, you know!”

Lucy shook her head gravely. “That wouldn’t be a good idea at all,” she said. “Please don’t ask me what is in the future, because I won’t tell you. This is the first time I’ve ever thought about, I suppose you’d call it time travel, but I’m sure it’s not wise for people to know what might happen in the future. They might try to change things and make them worse, or they might try to make other things happen sooner.” She finished firmly and looked away, remembering the frightening events of a wartime London and her fear, until her Mother and Father had sent them all away. Father, she remembered, had come back from his big ship to help Mother see them all off. Mother was working in the Red Cross and had often come in late from meetings, pale and tired, but determined to continue in the work. Lucy wondered if they were both safe and a lump came into her throat. No, she decided, it was better that Jo didn’t know about the war, or anything else.

I'm beginning to feel a bit sorry for Jo at the moment.

#222:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 9:38 pm

Thanks for the good wishes on the promotion front. They have a lot of people to interview, so I have to wait at least three weeks before I know anything. I have to push it to the back of my mind and get on with stuff, which is kind of hard.

--
Jo eyed her curiously, but seeing Lucy was determined on that point, let it go. “Tell me then,” she asked “what is the cordial, anyway?”

“It’s a very special cordial,” replied Lucy. It was given to me the first time I was in Narnia. It comes from the juice of fire flowers (I think this is correct, can someone else remember from LWW?). It has magical healing properties. When Edmund was badly injured in a big battle, it saved his life. I used it often, when I was a queen here.”
“Queen!” exclaimed Jo. “So that was you!”

Lucy stared at her. “What do you mean?”

“Look, I got the cordial and this horn from an enormous tree, somewhere behind us. They were both hanging up on it and there was a sign too. The sign said they were treasures that had belonged to Queen Susan and Queen Lucy.”

Lucy blushed. “Yes,” she said quietly, “we were both queens, Susan and I. Peter and Edmund were kings. Peter was High King over all of us. Aslan crowned us, at Cair Paravel, the castle by the sea.” She said this with a dreamy expression in her eyes, for all at once, she could see the place she had loved so, which had been home to her in Narnia for so many happy years.

#223:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 18, 2004 9:46 pm

Last bit, because I have to get some work done.

--
Jo sighed. It was all a bit much to take in. First the terrifying fall and then their arrival in this place, which seemed to be part of something called Narnia. Then finally the revelation that this girl she had disliked so much was some kind of royalty, in Narnia, at any rate.

“So what do we do now?” she asked somewhat helplessly.

“Start walking again,” said Lucy promptly. “I’m sure if we keep on, we’ll come to a house or people or something and we can find out where in Narnia we are, for this isn’t a part I recognise at all, you know. And I’m longing to see Aslan again. I’m sure he’s quite close, I can almost feel it.”

“Who is Aslan?” asked Jo. “You keep on talking about him.”

“Aslan is the great king of Narnia. He comes and goes as he pleases. He’s a lion,” at Jo’s puzzled expression. “The great lion.”

“Aren’t you scared of him?” said Jo. “I mean, he’s a lion.”

“No, not exactly scared,” said Lucy slowly. “I mean, I love him, he’s my king too. I’m not scared of him, but I try to do as he says, you know. I guess it’s respect and honour, you know.”

OK, one more bit.

--
Jo didn’t quite understand, but she supposed that it might make sense if she actually met Aslan and saw for herself. Assuming that he didn’t eat her first. With that comforting thought, she followed Lucy out of the clearing, past the fountain and along a paved pathway.

Noticing that the path was yellow Lucy and Jo immediately began to skip and sing (oh sorry, wrong story).

Ahem. Back to the real story.

Jo caught up to Lucy and they walked for a while in silence. Suddenly Lucy spoke.

“Why do you hate me so much Jo?”

Jo gasped at the direct question. “I don’t hate you,” she responded rather primly. “It’s wrong to hate people.”

Lucy sighed. “All right then,” she said patiently, “I’ll re-phrase it. Why don’t you like me?”

“What do you mean,” cried Jo, playing for time and hoping something else might happen to distract Lucy.

“What I mean is that from the very first moment that we were introduced, properly introduced I mean, you have shown your dislike of me. You cold-shouldered me, you were rude, sometimes you even turned your back on me. Every time you had to speak to me you it was obvious that you didn’t want to. I’m not the only person who noticed it: a lot of other people did too. I could see them looking and sometimes whispering to one another when something like that happened. What I don’t understand is why. After the first couple of times I went out of my way to avoid you whenever possible. As far as I know I was never rude to you and I never did anything to deserve the way you’ve treated me. How do you think it made me feel, everytime you spoke to me so coldly, or snubbed me in front of everyone?” Lucy finished reasonably, glad to have the chance to put her point to Jo at last.

#236:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 7:51 pm

Jo still has a little way to go. Another small bit.
--
“Er,” stammered Jo, not quite sure how to respond to this. “I didn’t, I mean, I um don’t know.” It was not often that Jo was lost for words, but Lucy’s direct attact had taken her by surprise and she had no ready phrases to hide behind.

“That’s fine,” said Lucy promptly. “We may be walking for a while, so you’ll have lots of time to think about it.” Jo gaped at her, for this was not at all like the Lucy she had come to know at the Chalet School. Lucy herself was rather surprised. She supposed that the Narnian air had something to do with it, that, and finding herself in a situation where she was completely at home and Jo was not. She grinned inwardly and kept on walking, ignoring the pleading looks cast at her by Jo. Jo was going to have to work this out for herself. And she was going to stand her ground until she did.

Realising that Lucy was not going to say any more and not daring to say anything else for the moment, Jo also walked on in silence. Her thoughts were busy as she walked. Images of her friends flashed through her mind. She remembered the frustrated expressions of the Die Rosen people the weekend she had spent up there, driving everyone to distraction with her demands for attention and the incessant whistling. She remembered how she had goaded and pushed Grizel and wondered how that young lady had kept her restraint. On one occasion, she had made a particularly rude remark, but almost teasingly, to see what Grizel would do. For the first time, she was overcome by shame as she remembered the hurt expression which had come over the older girl’s face. Grizel had not said a word, but had turned quietly and walked away. Jo had not seen much of her for the rest of the weekend. In fact, now she came to think of it, most of them had avoided her, all weekend.

#237:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 8:07 pm

Last bit, my youngest has just emerged from the bedroom and needs cuddles and breakfast and some mummy time. So nice when they're still that age.

--
Why had they all avoided her? What was wrong with them? Or was there something wrong with her? What had she done? Jo pondered this, questioning her own behaviour for the first time. She had always prided herself on not expecting different treatment because she was Madame’s sister, but the truth was, she had expected it, and in most cases, she had received it.

Thinking again of Grizel’s behaviour, Jo finally realised just how fine a person Grizel had become. Why, I would have lost my temper and lashed out, if someone spoke to me that way, thought Jo. Why didn’t Grizel lose her temper? Because she didn’t want to upset Madge, came the thought. She didn’t want to cause a scene – she knew how worried Madge was about Stacie. Stacie!

Jo winced as she also remembered the scene in Stacie’s bedroom. She had gone there wanting a “captive audience”. She had learned enough about invalids to know that what Stacie needed was quiet conversation and someone to listen to her, not Jo erupting into the room to talk excitedly of sport and walks. Why, she had not even asked Stacie if she wanted company, she had just bounced into the room and started babbling. She remembered Stacie’s pale face and the tearstains on her cheeks as Jack and Madge had pushed her aside and bent over the girl anxiously. She had gone from the room silently, rather cross that Stacie had not appreciated her efforts at sparkling conversation. Now, she cringed at her thoughtlessness and hated herself for what she had done. What kind of a person have I turned into?

I'm ok, just held captive by RL and writer's block. I'll try and get back to it on the weekend. It's hard for me to find the time. Maybe I should have another severe illness and then I'll have time. (On second thoughts, that wasn't such fun, so I might pass.)

Pim, I hate having all the blood tests that they make me endure.

The empty arm is a joke from Hancock's Half Hour, starring the late, great Tony Hancock. The Blood Donor episode was one of the funniest ever.

I will try and do some more tonight. I found out today about the jobs I've been wanting. I was offered a training job (to train all the other editors) and was next in line for the other one, should one of the successful applicants have pulled out. So, I've taken the training job and I'm going to be a busy girl for the next few months. I guess I'd better get cracking and try to finish my drabble before that happens. If not tonight, then tomorrow night, because hubby is out for the evening and I'll have the computer to myself!

RL is appalling at the moment. We've had heavy rain, which has caused the ceiling in my daughters' room to leak heavily. Elder one woke up on Saturday night with a mouthful of water. All spare time occupied in scrubbing, washing drying and moving daughter's bed and associated belongings into the study, temporarily, while we wait for the problem to be fixed. Everything here is in chaos and for some reason they still expect me to show up for work this morning. Unreasonable, I call it!

So, I'm making no more promises until I see how the latest disaster pans out ...

Here is another small bit. I've been struggling with this -- inspiration has dried up, but I hope I'll get on now. Also, the roof has been cleared and they tell us that it shouldn't leak now. But my daughter is refusing to sleep in there, because the plaster is coming off the wall and she's scared. So now we're waiting for someone to come and do some work in there, so I can move her bed back in ...

--
“I did hate you,” she blurted out suddenly, stopping in the middle of the path. Lucy stopped too and stared at her.

“Why?” she asked simply.

“I don’t know,” groaned Jo. “I’ve been lying awake at night trying to work out why. It’s just, oh I don’t know, everything seemed to go all wrong when you arrived. I suppose in some way I’ve been blaming you for that. You know, the day you arrived in my bedroom …”

“Out of a wardrobe,” murmured Lucy wickedly.

“… I got on the wrong side of Matron Besley then,” continued Jo, hardly noticing the interruption “and nothing seemed to go my way after that. You were always in my face – whenever something went wrong with me, there you were, watching. I’ve hated you for that. Oh you don’t understand,” she burst out in a rush, “everyone has always admired me, praised me, looked up to me. The babes want me to tell them stories, Plato praises my singing to the skies. Everything I’m good at, I’m also better at than everyone else, at least I was. I never knew how important that was to me until you came along.”

“Me?” gasped Lucy.’

“Yes you,” said Jo soberly. “You’re better at all of those things. Those stories you tell the Juniors – they’re much better than anything I ever made up for them. You sing better, you’re popular with the other girls and you seem to have this real gift for languages – I always thought I was the only one who could pick up an unfamiliar language so quickly.”

Oh, if you only knew thought Lucy, but she remained silent. Time enough for explanations later. It was more important for Jo to get everything out.

#317:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 9:13 pm

RL is chaotic and the ex is in briefly from Malaysia and taking the kids out each day (school holidays). Not coping very well with this -- he's at his most arrogant at the moment and so is his wife. Today is the last day -- hubby packed me off to work early and said he would handle things, so just have to cope with one more visitation tonight!!!

House is watertight and we're waiting for the painter to come and begin repairing plaster and re-paint the walls. Turns out a number of walls need doing -- I foresee us all living out of one or two rooms until it's all done. It's going to be a bit of a nightmare.

So I haven't written anymore at all and I don't know when I will for a while. I'm so tired I can't even think straight. When inspiration comes back I will probably sit down and write a lot, all at once.

#318:  Author: ShanderLocation: Canada PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 10:19 pm

Poor you Cathy - & poor family too. It must be really tough on all of you at the moment - visiting dads cause enough chaos (even when they don't mean to) without house problems as well.

Don't worry about the drabble at all - we can cope without it at the moment (even if we may not want to!)

Take care of yourself & lots and lots of huggles

Here's a bit more. It's coming slowly, but I can see where it's going again, thank goodness. RL is still hectic, but Ex and his belongings are leaving Sydney today, so we don't have to contend with them again for a little while. Yay for that.

I've just picked up from where I left off, so if it doesn't make sense, try going back a bit to find the beginning of the conversation!

“And now,” continued Jo, “here we are in some place called Narnia and you’re a queen or something and I’m so tired,” she would up, rather wearily. Lucy looked at her more closely and noted the dark circles beneath Jo’s eyes and her pallor. Probably, hasn’t been sleeping properly either, she guessed shrewdly.

“Let’s sit down for a while and rest,” she suggested gently. “Actually I could do with a bit of a snooze myself, so why don’t we get off this path and find a spot of grass to curl up on.”

Jo agreed to this and so they turned right off the path and made their way across soft grass to a kind of bluebell wood in the distance. Inside, the light was dim and the ground beneath their tired feet was soft. There was a delicious scent all around them. Finally they came to a clearing, beneath a slender, silvery tree. Without words, both girls stumbled forward and curled up on the soft bracken. Both were more exhausted than they knew and within minutes they were asleep, lulled by the fragrance of the flowers and the delicious warm breeze wafting around them.

Lucy sat up and rubbed her eyes. It was now night and she judged that they had been asleep for many hours. The breeze she had felt earlier was still blowing and a bright moonlight illuminated the wood, touching everything with silver.

She looked over at her companion and noted approvingly that Jo’s waxy-pallor had been replaced by a healthier flush. Lucy had been quite right when she guessed that Jo had not been sleeping properly. She had been carrying around a large burden of anger, which had grown almost daily, as she clung to her imagined slights and her resentment against Lucy and her siblings. Night times had seen Jo tossing restlessly, anxiety and tension robbing her of the sleep she needed. Her acknowledgment of her behaviour to Lucy seemed to have suddenly dissolved much of it and she now slept peacefully.

#322:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Fri Apr 16, 2004 9:21 pm

Just another small bit. Now I have to go have a shower and get myself off to the hairdressers, to get the mop trimmed!

Lucy stretched with a muffled “Ow” and stood up carefully, so as not to wake her companion. She was stiff and a little sore from sleeping on the ground and was beginning to realise that she was also terribly thirsty. She glanced at Jo again and judged that she probably wouldn’t awaken for some time. I’ll just chance it, she thought. I won’t go very far, but I simply must find a stream or something, I’m just so thirsty.

Treading softly, she made her way through a break in the trees and saw to her relief that there was a small stream quite close by. Lucy knelt down and cupped her hands in the water and drank deeply. The cool water refreshed and revived her and she stood up again. She was tempted to explore further but prudence suggested it would be more sensible to return to Jo and wait for her to wake up. She turned around to return to the clearing and a small cry of surprise broke from her!

A little bit more for you, written in my lunch break at work. No more now, I have to go for a walk and stretch a bit and get myself something to drink.
--
“Aslan!” cried Lucy, almost sobbing for joy, as she flung herself at the feet of the great Lion. He stood before her in the clearing, the slender silver birches bowing in homage at his presence.

Aslan lowered his head as Lucy buried her face in his soft golden mane. “Beloved Child”, he said in a deep voice. Behind him a drowsy Jo rubbed her eyes and gazed in astonishment and awe. Nothing Lucy had said could have prepared her for the sight of Aslan, who was far bigger and far more fearsome than she had expected. She found herself hoping that he would not turn around and see her, yet peversely, she almost wished he would. She shrank back against the trunk of a tree and kept very still.

“Where is the other Daughter of Eve?” said Aslan, when Lucy’s first raptures were over.

“She is over there Aslan, we were asleep under the tree”, replied Lucy, pointing to the spot. Aslan turned around and padded softly over to Jo, who let out a small shriek, covered her face with her hands and waited in terror to be eaten alive. There was a small silence, which was broken by a irrepressible chuckle from Lucy. Jo took her hands away from her face and found herself looking deep into the eyes of Aslan.

Well, the PC is fixable, it seems, but it won't be soon. Seems that the CPU has burnt itself out. It's not Pentium, it's an AMD chip, so the guy who looked at it is going to try and get a replacement chip and if not, then a different sort of chip plus replacement motherboard. Basically a completely new system. So we wait for that to happen. All my files are on that computer and all hubby's files and essays etc.

Say it with me.

My tale of woe continues. The computer will be fixed soon -- the computer man is on the track of a secondhand tower which he'll put together with what we've got to make a new one.

Unfortunately, now we have more house trouble. Our landlord has decided to sell the house, rather than fix the walls and the floor. So we're out. We're looking at another house in the next suburb. Smaller house, nicer suburb, beautiful kitchen, lots of garden, but no grass to mow. We'll probably take it. The current landlord has given us until July, but if we take this place we'll give *her* notice and move out in about three weeks. There's one more house to look at and then we'll decide. Needless to say, I haven't even thought about the Narnia chalet drabble ...

Are we having fun yet?

Well, I'm back to this drabble finally. RL has well and truly butted in. We still have no home PC, so I'll update from work, from time to time, when the plot bilby tickles me.

We're all moved into our new home and more or less (less than more) unpacked too.

I've just put the last bit in as well, as it's been a while and it might not make sense, otherwise

She found herself hoping that he would not turn around and see her, yet perversely, she almost wished he would.

There was a small silence, which was broken by an irrepressible chuckle from Lucy. Jo took her hands away from her face and found herself looking deep into the eyes of Aslan.

New bit

Whatever she had expected to see it was not this. The great golden eyes looking into hers were filled with sorrow. Jo knew somehow that Aslan understood everything, about what had happened between Lucy and herself and all the doings back there, in the “real” world. She looked away in shame.

“How do I tell him how sorry I am?” she wondered. “Maybe it’s too late to fix the mess I’ve made.”

“It is never too late,” answered a deep voice. Looking back up at Aslan, Jo saw that he seemed to be smiling.

“Did you know what I was thinking?” she asked.

“I know all, child,” replied the lion gently. “You have caused many hurts in your world, but it is not too late to mend them. But first,” and now he beckoned Lucy closer as well, “there is a task for both of you here. Tell me, have you made your peace with one another?”

Lucy and Jo looked at one another. Had they?

“Of course we have,” said Lucy, grinning. “Haven’t we Jo?” She pulled the silliest face she could manage and Jo burst out laughing. “I suppose we have,” she said. “I’ll have to get used to being friends with you now.”

“That is well,” said the deep voice that Lucy had grown to love. “You have a long journey ahead of you and you will only succeed in the task I lay on you if you can work together.”

Last bit for this week. It's Friday and I'm having Monday off work. So maybe some more on Tuesday, although I'll probably have to spend most of the day in training.

“Aren’t you going to send us home?” blurted out Jo, much startled.

“No my child,” said Aslan gravely. “You are needed in Narnia now. A great evil threatens the line of Adam at Cair Paravel. You must hurry, else all will be lost.”

“What do you mean?” cried Lucy.

“Many years have passed since you and your brothers and sister sat on the throne at Cair Paravel,” replied the lion. “A new king, also from your world, was crowned. He married one of the wood nymphs and one of their sons now sits on the throne. But a great evil threatens his family and his reign. You must go now to Cair Paravel and aid them.”

“Do you want us to fight in a battle?” interrupted Lucy.

“No dear one,” said Aslan gravely. “You must protect the young princess, the king’s daughter. She is his only child. You must take her to a place of safety, for she is in deadly peril. She has a great gift that must be guarded. Take great care, for you will not know who it is safe to trust.”

“But how will we get there?” asked Jo, again wondering if she was dreaming all of this.

“I will send you,” replied the lion. “Be watchful and trust one another.”

These last words sounded faintly in Jo’s ears and she realised with a shock that she and Lucy were no longer in the wood. The air around them shimmered faintly as the scenery around them changed swiftly.

“Are we flying?” wondered Jo aloud.

“I don’t know,” replied Lucy, “but I’m feeling a little queasy – everything is moving so quickly!”

“Hold onto me,” said Jo. “Maybe if we shut our eyes for a little while, the sensation will pass.”

The two girls grabbed held hands and closed their eyes. Later neither could agree on how long their journey took. Lucy always said she thought a few hours, while Jo insisted it was only a few minutes. Regardless, both became aware that they had stopped moving. Lucy cautiously opened one eye.

“It’s ok Jo,” she said. “Look!”

Jo opened her eyes. She and Lucy were standing at the very end of a silvery beach, at the very edge of the sea. It was very early in the morning and deathly quiet.

“It’s Cair Paravel,” whispered Lucy. “There’s the castle behind us. It’s all just as I remember it.”

”Why are you whispering?” whispered Jo back.

“I don’t know,” admitted Lucy. “It’s just so quiet.”

Another small part. It's lunch time and I'm doing some writing. There might be one more little bit today.

“It is quiet, isn’t,” said Jo, wrinkling her brows. “I mean, I can’t even hear any birds or animals moving around, can you?”

“No,” said Lucy soberly “and I remember early mornings at Cair Paravel in our time. There were always lots of birds singing quite noisily.” She giggled.

“What?” said Jo curiously.

“Oh it’s just that the birds used to really irritate some of our courtiers. Dear Mr Tumnus was often at court and he used to complain constantly about the noise the birds made. Once he threw his shaving mirror out of the castle window at them.”

“Who is Mr Tumnus?” asked Jo.

“He was my very first friend in Narnia,” said Lucy. “I suppose,” (sadly) “that he’s long dead now”.

#376:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Tue Jul 20, 2004 2:36 am

Last bit for today.

Jo was about to ask some more about the mysterious Mr Tumnus, but she never had the chance. An ominous rumbling sounded in the distance and turning around, the girls saw a huge army bearing down upon them. There was no time for speech – as one, the girls threw themselves into the sea and swam rapidly around the peninsula upon which Cair Paravel stood. An enormous rock hung out over the water; they hid behind it.

“They must have been hiding in the woods,” panted Lucy. “Do you think we were seen?”

Jo shook her head. “I don’t believe so,” she said. “They were riding straight for the castle. But who are they?”

Both girls peered around the rock. A horrible sight met their eyes. An enormous group of fierce-looking men and women, heavily armed and garbed all in black, was attacking Cair Paravel. As they watched, a woman, who appeared to be the leader, approached the wall and raised both her arms. She cried out something (Lucy did not understand the language, but it sounded horrid) and the castle wall shimmered and dissolved into dust. With savage howls of triumph, the army rode forward, crushing everything beneath its path. Screams of terror now resounded from inside the castle walls, as the army moved swiftly inside, slaughtering all in its path.

“The princess,” gasped Lucy, rising from her hiding spot. Jo grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her down again.

“Don’t be stupid,” she hissed. “If we go in there, we’ll be killed too.”

“But you heard Aslan,” cried Lucy. “We must save her.”

“We don’t even know who she is or what she looks like,” pointed out Jo reasonably. “We can’t just dash in there. We have to be smart about this, or we can’t help her.”

Lucy saw the sense of this. “What can we do then?” she asked helplessly. Jo thought for a few moments.

“Is there some kind of back entrance to your castle?” she asked. “One that not many people would know about?”

“Why yes,” said Lucy in surprise. “There is one, but it’s tiny. They used it for stocking the kitchens. I think it comes out into a kind of pantry.”

“Well, can you find it again?” asked Jo urgently.

“I’m sure I can,” said Lucy.

“Let’s go then,” said Jo.

Silently, the girls hoisted themselves out of the water and made a beeline for the back wall of the castle. There, thick ivy covered the walls. Lucy ran frantic trembling hands over it, until she found what she was looking for.

Another small bit. I don't think I'll have any time to write more today though. Maybe tomorrow.

“Quick Jo!” gasped Lucy, “help me move the ivy, so we can open the door.”

Jo glimpsed a low narrow door just in front of her. She grasped the thick ivy fronds with a muffled “ow” and began to tear at them, ignoring the sundry cuts and scratches to her hands. Lucy began to tug desperately at the little door. It had obviously not been used for many years and the wood was beginning to rot at the bottom. Just as both girls were beginning to give up, the door began to move forward. Jo stopped tearing ivy away and added her strength to Lucy’s. The door opened wide, revealing the narrow opening.

“It’s so low down,” commented Jo. “You people must have had very tiny cooks and servants.”

Lucy gave her a rather peculiar smile, but made no remark. Time enough for Jo to discover that there were very few humans living in Narnia, she thought.

Jo was about to fling herself forward and through the door, but Lucy held her back.

“We should be careful,” she said quietly. “We don’t know who may be on the other side of that door.”

Jo nodded. “You’re right,” she said. “I was ready to dash in there. I didn’t think of that.”

“I think I should go first,” said Lucy. “At the beginning of our adventures in Narnia, I sort of got used to crawling quietly. I’ll go in a little way and make sure it’s safe.”

Jo agreed to this, so Lucy dropped to her knees and very carefully lowered herself into the opening. Crawling forward on her hands and knees, she recalled that other desperate flight from the Beavers’ house and how they had been forced to take shelter in Mr Beaver’s hideout. That passage had been much lower and narrower than this one, Lucy thought. Just ahead of her she could see the empty pantry. She could hear no sound. Turning her head, she called back to Jo in the softest voice she could manage.

“I think it’s safe Jo. Come in and follow me through. Try not to make any noise.”

She did not wait to see if Jo had heard, but continued on down the little passageway, until she found herself inside the castle pantry.

Last bit for today.

Lucy looked around her quickly. Inside the pantry it was very quiet and cool. A dim light came from the windows, which were partially screened with ivy fronds. A sturdy wooden table took up most of the room. The walls were lined with shelves and cupboards, neatly stacked with kitchen provisions. A slight scuffling sound announced Jo’s arrival and her head emerged from a cupboard near the floor. Lucy put her finger to her lips and extended her hand to help Jo to her feet.

“There doesn’t seem to be anyone here,” she commented quietly.

“How are we going to find the princess?” whispered Jo. Lucy shushed her immediately. “Don’t whisper,” she said in a low voice. “A whisper will carry a long way and we don’t know who might be listening.”

“How do you know?” asked Jo, copying Lucy’s low tones.

“Let’s just say I’ve had some experience in hiding out,” said Lucy grimly. “Now, from memory, this pantry opens into another storage area and from there into the main kitchens. There isn’t any other option, we’ll just have to go that way and hope we don’t run across anyone else.”

The two girls moved cautiously to the doorway and walked quietly into another storage area. Again, it was strangely quiet. They continued on through the kitchens. These too were strangely deserted, only a few pots and pans scattered on the floor betraying the fact that someone had fled from there recently.

And this is the last until next Monday (Sunday for you blokes, well most of you). I have back-to-back training all day today, so I'll barely be near my own desk and we still don't have a home PC.

Over the past few months Lucy had often dreamed of a joyous return to Narnia. She had remembered the hustle and bustle of the castle kitchens with a kind of nostalgia. As the youngest of the four monarchs, she had spent many happy hours there, listening to the folk tales of the various cooks and cooks assistants. She remembered the gleaming brass kettles, the crackling of wood fires and immaculately scrubbed wooden tables, always laden with a tempting array of delicacies in anticipation of her arrival. She gulped. This was not exactly how she had envisioned her return to Narnia. Then she gave herself a mental shake. There was no time for this. They had to find the princess.

“How will we find the princess?” murmured Jo, almost as if she had heard Lucy’s thoughts.

“I’m not sure,” said Lucy slowly. “But perhaps it won’t be too hard. I mean, she should look something like us.”

“Yes, but so will everyone else,” said Jo in amazement. Lucy shook her head. “Not necessarily,” she said, “not if it’s the Narnia I remember and for our sakes I hope I’m right.”

Jo wondered what she meant by this, but there was no time to ask. They were approaching the stairs leading out of the kitchen regions, up to the main body of the castle. The screams Lucy had heard earlier were becoming louder and there was no doubt that a fierce battle was being waged directly above their heads. If they ventured out they would find themselves right in the middle of it, but if they stayed down below there was no chance of finding the princess and saving her, as Aslan had instructed.

“What do we do now?” hissed Jo.

“Well, we have to go up there,” answered Lucy. “We’ll just have to try and avoid being seen.”

Jo eyed her dubiously, but couldn’t think of anything better and followed Lucy cautiously up the stairs.

Two more bits before the weekend hits!

“Isn’t there another way out?” asked Jo. “I don’t think we’ll have a chance if we stroll up the stairs – they will see us straight away. How do they get all the food upstairs, for instance? Surely they don’t traipse upstairs with it all!”

“I’m an idiot!” cried Lucy. “Of course they don’t! We can use the dumb waiter and pull ourselves up.” She ran quickly to what Jo had assumed was a small black cupboard in the wall. As Lucy pushed up the door, Jo could see a space, just large enough for two people, if they were squashed very tightly together. A rope and pulley system hung down. Lucy was already scrambling inside; she reached out to give Jo a hand up.

“This is how they get the food up. I can’t believe I didn’t think of it. Of course they normally pull it up from the top, but we should be able to hoist ourselves up. This comes out in an antechamber to the great dining hall. There used to be a great tapestry hanging in front of it. I just hope the tapestry is still there.”

(I hope I’m getting my facts right about dumb waiters. I’ve only seen one once and that was when I was a little girl, so I don’t remember rightly how they worked, but I hope I’m basically correct!)

#399:  Author: CathyLocation: Australia PostPosted: Fri Jul 23, 2004 2:38 am

Once both girls were inside, Jo managed to get the door closed again and Lucy began to haul on the rope to begin the climb out of the kitchen regions. It was slow, hard work. Two hefty girls are a lot heavier than several platters of the best venison!

“Perhaps you shouldn’t have eaten all those extra bread twists in the mornings,” suggested Jo brightly, by way of lightening the tension. A stony silence greeted her words.

“Just in case you were wondering,” remarked Lucy icily, “I’m glaring at you right now, for all I’m worth and the only reason that I haven’t subjected you to a royal tirade is that I need all my breath for pulling on this rope! And if it comes to that, just who was it who was having extra dessert the last couple of months?”

Jo grinned in the darkness, thankful that Lucy couldn’t see her. “Fair enough,” she acknowledged imperturbably. “Would you like me to take a turn?”

“No, I think I’d better keep on going,” said Lucy, sounding slightly mollified. “We could risk plummeting back into the kitchens and that might attract the sort of attention we want to avoid.”

“I’ll just think light-weight thoughts then,” chuckled Jo. “You do that,” retorted Lucy and they continued their way up the shaft in a companionable silence.

Jo sat quietly in the darkness thinking about all that had happened since their surprising arrival in Narnia. So much had happened in such a short space of time, yet she found herself accepting it all more and more readily. She knew that potentially their lives were in great danger, yet she did not dwell on this, her adventurous spirit reveling in the excitement of the unknown. Somehow she knew that Lucy felt the same way and she realised that they were similar in many ways.

“I wonder if that’s why I didn’t like you at first,” she wondered out loud.

“What?” said Lucy, startled.

“Oh, I was just thinking,” began Jo, only to be interrupted by a low chuckle.

“I thought it was the pulley making that grinding noise, but now I know better!”

“Idiot!” said Jo. “No, I was thinking about how it was when you first came to school. I’ve just realised how similar we are in lots of ways. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I was so jealous of you.”

“Perhaps,” said Lucy diffidently, as she pulled valiantly on the rope. “I say Jo, I think we’re there.”

In confirmation of this, there was a muffled bump, as the top of the dumb waited connected with the very top of the lift shaft. Jo cautiously pushed up the door and peered out.

“Well?” demanded Lucy impatiently.

“I can’t see anyone,” said Jo. “I think it’s safe.”

The two girls scrambled out of the dumb waiter and closed the door. Fortunately, Lucy’s memory had served her well. A heavy wall-length tapestry hung directly in front of them.

Love the exchange between them, and Joey's realisation of why she might have disliked Lucy from the start - after all, coming face to face with, not only another version of yourself, but a better version, must be daunting!

Thanks Cathy! Laughing

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I know I did. Here's a bit more and now I'm stuck. I know some of what happens next, but I have to spend some time figuring out the "hows".

Jo suddenly found that her knees were trembling. She looked at Lucy and saw that she was a little pale. Neither girl wanted to venture beyond the tapestry.

“Well then,” said Jo, taking a few deep breaths.

“Quite,” agreed Lucy. She cautiously peered around the edge of the tapestry and then beckoned to Jo. The small chamber in which they presently found themselves was deserted, but the splintered chairs and scrape marks on the floor bore evidence that a struggle had taken place in there quite recently. Lucy spoke in a low voice.

“I remember this room. It’s the anteroom to the main dining hall. I expect that the screaming we’ve been hearing has been coming from there.”

Lucy was quite right. Pressing their ears to the wall separating them from the Great Hall, the girls could plainly hear the sounds of the Narnians engaged in combat with their attackers. Lucy frowned.

“What do you think we should do?” she asked Jo. “The princess could be in there or she might be hiding somewhere else in the castle.”

“Well if she’s in there we can’t help her at the moment,” said Jo decidedly. “Not unless that cordial of yours can make us invisible!” Jo decided to ignore Lucy’s snort of disgust at this and continued hastily, “so there’s no point in trying to get in there to look for her. We can’t stay in here, so perhaps we should look elsewhere in the castle.”

Lucy hesitated. She knew Jo was right but it seemed cowardly to leave the Narnians to fight off the invaders. Lucy still thought of them as her subjects. Peter her brother would never have abandoned them. He would have fought along side them, until the very end.

Jo seemed to guess what she was thinking.

“You can’t help them that way Lucy,” she said gently. “We have to stay out of sight and try and find this princess.”

Lucy turned to face her. “I know,” she said, her eyes very bright. “Let’s keep going.”

Turning away from the door that led into the Great Hall, the girls began to wander through a series of rooms that opened into one another. Just as they reached an enormous corridor lined with suits of armour (some strangely small, Jo thought), Lucy broke away and stood stock still in front of a wall of portraits. Jo followed her in surprise and saw that she was gazing lovingly at a large portrait at eye level.

“Lucy, what are you doing!” exclaimed Jo.

Lucy smiled at her. “It’s Mr Tumnus,” she explained. “I suppose it was done after we left Narnia.”

Jo stared at the painting in surprise. It was a very handsome study of a faun (somewhat portly), dressed nattily in evening attire and smiling somewhat awkwardly. An inscription beneath the painting ran thus:

Mr Tumnus
Painted in the twentieth year after the
disappearance of the High King Peter and their
Majesties King Edmund, Queen Susan and Queen Lucy.

A small card had been inserted into the frame of the picture. It said: On loan from the Septimus Bartholomew Tumnus collection.

Lucy and Jo continued to stare at the picture, Lucy rather dreamily, remembering happier days in Narnia and Jo in shock, as she assimilated the fact that Lucy’s best friend in Narnia had probably walked around with a tail draped over his arm. But they were interrupted by the sound of running feet. Someone was coming into the room!

Lucy glanced around wildly and then pulled Jo into an embrasure, pulling the velvet curtain across to hide them. They crouched down on the floor behind a large pot and waited. They heard a door open and close softly. Cautious footsteps were heard and then to their dismay the velvet curtains were slowly pulled back. Lucy and Jo looked up in dismay and saw a small person regarding them gravely.

Jo was the first to speak. “I say,” she said, “are you the princess by any chance?”

“I am,” replied the child, in silvery tones. She continued to eye them solemnly. Lucy and Jo stared at her in some astonishment. She was a dainty little maiden, with silvery fair curls falling over her shoulders and a serene little face. There was a slightly stubborn set to her chin. Lucy suspected that despite her angelic appearance, this princess was accustomed to having her own way.

Thanks Cathy - very real that Lucy would feel guilty about not helping the Narnians. Hope you get over being stuck soon!

Another little bit for today. We now have home internet access, of a sort, but I still have no access to any of the files on the computer that went kaput. The whole of the earlier drabble is on the dead machine, in a Word doc. I can't get at it.

Jo spoke again. “I say you know, we must get out of here. You’re in terrible danger. We’ve come to rescue you.” Lucy smothered a giggle behind her hand. Jo sounded terribly serious. Lucy knew it wasn’t really funny, but she couldn’t help laughing. She hurriedly coughed and said “she’s right, we really should go.”

“I do not wish to go anywhere,” said the princess simply. She looked at them both and then seated herself on a convenient chair. Lucy blinked in surprise. She had not previously noticed any furniture in their hiding place.

Jo spoke again. “Look, I know you don’t want to leave your home, but we really have to. I’m sure Lucy knows lots of places we can hide you for a while.”

“Lucy?” queried the princess.

“I’m Lucy,” said Lucy. “I was once a queen here in Narnia, with my sister and my two brothers. Aslan sent Jo and me to help you. Jo’s right. We really must find a way out of the castle and somewhere to hide. I wish Mr Tumnus were still here,” she added, almost to herself. “He was always good in tricky situations.”

The princess looked up. Lucy seemed to have caught her interest.

“Do you mean Mr Septimus Bartholomew Tumnus?” she asked in surprise. “I know where he lives.”

Lucy stared blankly at her, but Jo was quicker. “Yes,” she replied simply. “Can you take us there?”

“Of course,” said the princess, “but it’s a day’s ride to his home.”

“That’s no good then,” groaned Jo, “we don’t have any horses. I’m sure that army downstairs has cut off access to the stables.”

“I can get us there,” declared the princess in her silvery voice. She seemed to have forgotten her refusal to leave. Jo nudged Lucy, who took the hint.

“That would be wonderful,” she said politely. “Can you show us a safe way out of the castle too?”

“Of course,” stated this peculiar child. “We can just go through this trapdoor and then through the passageway that opens into the wood.” She pointed to a door that had suddenly appeared in the wall. It had certainly not been there before. Jo and Lucy looked at one another. What was going on?

Here's a little bit more. I'll try and work on some at home tonight, especially now that we have internet at home again. (Yay!)

Lucy looked more closely at the princess. The silvery fair ringlets falling down over her shoulders gave her an air of fragility, but Lucy was beginning to suspect that this was not the case. The princess gazed back at her, her eyes a vivid gentian blue, her calm gaze betraying nothing. I think I’m going to have a few words with this young lady, thought Lucy grimly. Just as soon as I get a chance. There was no time for further reflection however. Lucy spoke with sudden decision.
“All right then, I think we’d better leave. Jo, you go first and the princess can follow you. I’ll bring up the rear.” Jo nodded her agreement but the princess flushed angrily.

“Do you not think that I had better go first?” she inquired politely, but with a steely note in her voice.
“No I don’t think so,” said Lucy firmly. “Jo and I would feel a lot better if you stayed in between us for the moment.” She spoke with calm authority and the princess gave in at once, following Jo meekly through the trapdoor in the wall. Lucy sighed, and clambered in after her. Just for once it would be nice to escape through a door where I didn’t have to crawl, she thought.

'nother bit for today.

The passage she found herself in, however, was remarkably short. In no time at all Lucy found herself standing in a little wood. Jo and the princess were already there. Jo raised a quizzical eyebrow at Lucy, but made no remark.
“Now we must go and find our horses,” stated the princess calmly.
“But what about the army?” objected Jo.
“They won’t see us,” was the simple reply. Jo and Lucy looked at each other again, but let it go and followed the princess through the woods. Soon they came to a clearing where three horses were tethered securely. Lucy blinked.
“How did those horses get there?” she asked in surprise.
The princess smiled. “I arranged it this morning,” she said. “I thought we might need them.”
“Something isn’t right here,” whispered Jo in Lucy’s ear. Lucy nodded but didn’t reply. She looked at the princess.
“We need to get away from here, but I think we need to have a serious talk. And soon.”
The princess looked mutinous, but did not speak. She lightly swung herself up on a snow white horse and waited while Lucy and Jo did likewise. Lucy was quite at home in the saddle (having learned to ride as a queen of Narnia). Jo had more difficulty. As she attempted to mount her house, it neatly circumvented her efforts by walking around and around in circles. In the end, Lucy (biting her lips in an effort not to laugh) dismounted and came to the rescue. She held the horse while a scarlet-faced Jo managed to climb into the saddle.
Lucy looked at the princess again. “All right, how do we find Mr Tumnus?” she asked.
The princess looked back at her demurely. “Like this,” she said. She leaned forward and whispered something into her horse’s ear. With a startled whinny it took off through the wood, galloping wildly. There was no time to lose. Lucy also urged her horse into a gallop and set off after the princess. “Come on!” she yelled back to Jo, who was left alone in the wood.
“But I don’t know how to ride!” she called back.
“Not another one!” groaned a voice nearby. Jo looked around startled. “Who said that?” she asked.

There will be an update, when I get around to writing it. My life is quite hectic these days and the plot bilby seems to have deserted me. Maybe when all my assignments are done I'll be able to get back to Narnia.
