#1: Marlows at the Chalet School Author: SindhuLocation: INDIA PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 5:56 pm

Well, it’s happened! Very Happy I’ve been ambushed by plot bunnies (and don’t give me any of that talk about their being fluffy, cuddly darlings-relentless is what they are! Confused And they’ve actually got around lazy me to make an insane attempt to keep a drabble going! I don’t have a clue as to how this is going to turn out, whether it belongs in FCS or SCS or even whether I‘m going to be able to end it or not. Embarassed Rolling Eyes All I know is, the PBs are giving me no peace. Tell me nicely and kindly if this is awful, please- maybe I can persuade them to go back to gnawing carrots! Embarassed
Here’s my first little effort- I’ve been wanting another Marlow school story desperately and I can’t bear the thought of there being no more, so adapting my version of what happened after Run Away Home to the Chaletian:
***********
MARLOWS AT THE CHALET SCHOOL

Ginty Marlow decided that she would groom Catkin once more. Not that he needed it, but it was something to do and she felt that anything was better than going back inside to the hostility ( completely unjustified, of course) with which the rest of her family were regarding her at the moment. It was so unfair, thought Ginty as she brushed the pony with needless vigor. She hadn’t planned any of the horrible things that happened last term. Calling Patrick had been a joke and all that fuss about the exam papers hadn’t been her fault, really. She supposed she had known her family would fuss, which was why she had grabbed at Monica’s invitation for the hols, and if things had gone according to plan she would have gone back to school from there and no hoo-ha about it. It really was foul, the doctor suddenly deciding that Monica needed a rest cure; which meant that Ginty had been unceremoniously packed off to spend the last fortnight of the holidays at home. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the others had had the most fabulous adventure when she was away, and nobody had even remembered her birthday, absolutely everyone was being beastly; even Ann, and Patrick didn’t seem to want to even talk to her anymore and he and Nicola went about together all the time… life, Ginty decided, was not worth living, and maybe they would miss her if she pined away and died and how exquisite she would look in the last stages of decline and Patrick would be sorry….
***********
“You know, this really is a wonderful idea” Kathie Ferrars said for about the tenth time that day. Miss Annersley gave her an amused glance. “My dear Kathie, if you and Nancy and Sharlie are going to behave like infants over this, I am almost afraid to think what effect the excitement will have on the girls!” she said and Kathie blushed. Nancy Wilmot plunged to the rescue “You must admit it’s a smashing idea, Hilda,” she said, calmly ignoring her Head’s severe look. “I only wonder we never thought of this before.”
“Well, you must admit it isn’t easy for most schools to fund a term abroad for their students” Miss Wilson pointed out reasonably. “And not all the pupils from Kingscote can afford it by any means. This is a very small experiment; just a few sponsored by the school and some others whose parents can manage the funds.”
“And it isn’t as if we have never had anything to do with other schools before,” Matron Lloyd added her quota. “What about St. Hilda’s? Really, you youngsters are making an absurd fuss. Like Hilda, I don’t know how we are to keep the girls in hand if this goes on.”
Nancy refused to be crushed, however. “St. Hilda’s was quite a different matter. There was no question of an arranged, planned interaction there- we just came to the rescue in a crisis. This is going to be a more relaxed affair for all concerned, and those who come, Staff as well as pupils are going to want to come” She finished with a deep chuckle at the memory of certain scenes with those members of St. Hilda’s who had not wanted to come.
Miss Annersley relaxed and joined in the laughter that ran around the Staffroom at this point. “All right Nancy, you and Kathie have made your point – it is a very exciting idea and I’m very glad my tour of inspection last term had such a result. At the same time, we- the Staff, I mean are back here a fortnight before term starts to plan for the new arrangements and we have done nothing but congratulate ourselves on such an enterprising program. I’d like to remind you that exciting as it is, taking in an assorted set of pupils and staff from another school with some quite different ideas from us means a lot of scheduling. So, could we get down to business, please?”
The younger mistresses came to order in a hurry and the Head turned to her secretary. “So, how many pupils are definitely coming according to the last message from Miss Keith, Rosalie?” she asked. “It’s all a bit iffy” Rosalie Dene replied, glancing up from her lists. “Well, I can’t help it” she added hastily as she caught Bill’s eye. “That’s the only word that describes things at their end at the moment. It was marvelous working with Miss Carters – she’s their proper secretary- but she went on an unexpected holiday in the middle of our arrangements and the substitute, Miss Lambert is making a total mess of the details.” “She actually telegraphed saying she lost our inventory and could we send another copy, if you please!” ‘Matey’ supplemented with an indescribable sniff.
Miss Annersley hurriedly choked back a most undignified giggle and looked repressively around the table before she said “Well, give us what information you have, Rosalie. We will just have to get to work with that at the moment. And remember Miss Keith did say that the girls themselves were not to be told till they were back at school and she was giving the parents time till the last day to decide. Yes, I know that sounds most disorganized, Nell, but she does want as many people as possible to take advantage of the chance. Go ahead Rosalie, tell us the worst!”
“The parents certainly seem to be making use of the time limit.” Rosalie commented. “Only five girls have been confirmed by their people until now - one is a Junior- Bunty Penfold- the only one so far. Four others are about the same age, in Upper IV A- Tim Keith- she’s their Head’s niece, by the way and Miss Keith is paying”- “Though the good lady most particularly desires that fact be not circulated” Miss Wilson interjected with a grin. Rosalie grinned back before continuing “then we have Miranda West, Esther Frewen and Pomona Todd. Next, we have a doubtful case in Monica Eliot- Upper VA- she’s just recovering from an accident and the doctors think this would be just the place for her now,” -Matron looked interested – “Of course she can’t do much in the way of work- and then we have two girls the school is definitely sponsoring- they’re sisters, oddly enough- Ann and Lawrence Marlow- Ann’s a prefect”
“That’s something I’ve been wondering about” Nancy interrupted. “So far we seem to have only one of their prefects. Surely it would be a tremendous help all round if we had a few more?”
“I did suggest that” Miss Annersley replied. “But Miss Keith seems to think most of her prefects cannot afford the time away considering they have examinations soon. And I also got the impression that Miss Cromwell, who is heading the mistresses who are joining us, is not very keen on having prefects along.”
“Don’t soften it, Hilda,” Miss Wilson put in her comment. “You know perfectly well that from her letter it sounded like Miss Cromwell had no use for the Prefect system whatever.” Miss Annersley did not deny this and the Staff looked at each other seriously. The prefect system was one of the cardinal tenets of the Chalet School and Miss Cromwell’s attitude could easily create problems.
“Anyway,” Rosalie went on before the silence could become too long, “We ARE having Ann Marlow and she is a thoroughly reliable girl by all accounts. In fact she was a keen guide (she left the Company last term as they did not have Rangers) and her Captain insisted on sponsoring her from the Company funds. Her sister, Lawrence- well, Lawrence seems to be a different story altogether. She is in Upper IV A too, we appear to be getting the lions share from that form and Miss Keith was rather disgruntled about sending her at all. Quite apart from the fact that it is a bit awkward for the school to be sponsoring two girls from the same family, she seemed to think Lawrence didn’t deserve to come anyway.”
“Then why is Lawrence –I hope she’ll let us call her Lawrie- coming in the first place?” Miss Derwent demanded to know.
“Apparently she holds one of the Prosser fellowships- one of the most important scholarships at Kingscote- and the Board of Governors insisted that all Prosser holders whose families consented be allowed to come. The Marlow parents have agreed and Miss Keith seems to have had no choice” Miss Annersley paused before adding impressively ‘I rather got the feeling that there was something out of the way about that scholarship. Miss Keith as much as said that either her niece or Lawrence by themselves were bad enough but together they could be quite a problem. I fancy we shall have our hands full!”
“And that is added to our own quota of young sinners?” Joan Bertram demanded in mock horror. “What have we done to deserve this?”
Karen and her satellites came in with coffee at that point and the meeting was adjourned, though Nell Wilson was to be heard muttering reflectively to herself- “I wonder- I very much wonder!”

Are Nicola and Ginty going to get there as well?

I've only read the school based Marlowe stories, but enjoyed them. Look forward to seeing where you go with this. Glad Miss Cromwell is going, that should be fun! Will Anne be able to join CS Rangers?

Thanks, Carolyn, I'm HORRIBLY nervous and badly needed the encouragement! : Very Happy
I'm trying to figure out a way to get Nicola and Ginty there! And I don't quite know about rangers, but I intend to see Ann has a good time for once- I'm really upset about the way she's often brushed aside!
And I HOPE I'll beable to use Miss Cromwell's potential to the full- she's too good to waste! (I have a nice (hopefully) bit where she gets across the prefects planned! Wink

That all sounds good, you'll need to decide about Nicola and Ginty soon, would their parents be able to afford it, can't remember enough at this time, but presumably if they've already accepted for the other two then they would have done so if they could. What about Mrs Marlows mother, if she could afford it, wasn't she Frech with odd ideas about being religious and ladylike, she mught think it would do the the world of good or something??

Don't know anything about the Marlows - have never read the books! But what you've written so far looks really good, Sindhu - looking forward to more!

Vaguely remember reading some of the Marlow books but years ago and not very sure about them. Looks interesting though, Sindhu, please carry on!

I adore ALL the Marlow boks - can't wait to see more of this.

I think you've got Ginty perfectly so far Sindhu, and can't wait to see more. Surely you can't have Lawrie without Nicola though - that would be like having Baileys and no ice!

And anybody who hasn't read a Marlow book - what is wrong with you?!?!?!?!? Buy them now and READ THEM!

#9:  Author: SindhuLocation: INDIA PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 5:21 am

Thanks everyone, I was literally shaking in my shoes as to how this would be reserved! Actually, of course I'm going to get Ginty and and Nicola there, I just want a chance to explore their reactions at the possibility of being left out!
And Rachel, thanks so much at saying I've got Ginty well- I was completely exasperated by her at the end of Attic term and this is my way of getting my own back!
I'm typing this during a sneak peek before breakfast- back later Very Happy

This looks as though it will be good- I like it so far! Very Happy
Just one question- what are the Marlow books and who wrote them? I'm afraid I've never heard of them.

#14:  Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair; sometimes in Hampshire, England, UK, Europe, Earth, Milky Way, Universe PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 9:12 pm

** falls over herself in her haste to answer Sarah's question **

The Marlow books were written by Antonia Forest, who sadly died towards the end of last year. There are 13 books in total, only four of which are school stories; the remainder are holiday books. They are all about the Marlow family. The kids are Giles (in the Navy) Karen (HG, then married)Rowan (games wunderkid, gives up school to run the family farm) Ann (conscientous and all round "good" girl), Ginty (selfish and gorgeous), Peter (scared of heights), Nicola and Lawrence (twins N-nice girl, sensible etc etc; L-actressy and a complete drama queen)

ETA: Despite her name, Lawrie (Lawrence) is a girl!!

They really are extremely well written books, and worth reading - my local library has them all in the out of print stack and quite happily ordered them all in for me. GGBP have been reprinting the titles too, so anyone interested should be able to get hold of copies easily enough.

If anyone wants to read/borrow some, let me know and I will bring them to Gather with me! Anything to further the cause!

But I ave got a couple of work at home things and am quite enjoying them! So all's well for now. Laughing
Only, I'm been in a total flurry for quite some time now, trying to finish a lot of pending work - procrastination catches up! Embarassed that I've hardly been able to READ, let alone POST! I’m sorry but I would have to say that your attempt is really disproportionate. More than three quarters of a post in describing a single meting which functions only as a mechanical devise for unbelievable reasons for why and hw the Marlows end up at the Chalet??? Unbelievable and unconvincing. (I’m NOT trying to be rude, just giving the facts IMO). You need a lot more credibility and characterization skills if you are to pull such an ambitious theme off. It might work with the automatons you obviously intend your Chalet characters to be, but characters as complex as the Marlows need careful handling. Maybe you should try something easier, like FCS for the time being.

Sindhu - what you've written so far has been fantastic. Please don't give up just because of one criticism.

You've even inspired me to have another go at AF's books Very Happy They require more effort to read them than the CS Exclamation

#39:  Author: BethCLocation: Worcester, UK PostPosted: Fri Mar 26, 2004 11:36 pm

Have just been shocked by the tone of that criticism, but on to more important matters:
Sindhu, please do continue with this - there are a lot of people (including myself!) intrigued by the start you've made. I've just re-read Cricket Term and it set me thinking again about possibilities after Run Away Home, so it's nice to come here and read your version!

#40:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2004 12:35 am

Sindhu please do not let that opinion get to you. They may feel that they had a valid criticism, but worded it in a curt, impolite and rude way.

Any writer needs to practise their art and in practising we improve...there are all levels of writing on here and all are welcome if they are setting out to entertain and to give pleasure.

Criticism is also welcome, and sometimes I wish for more of it, but it should always be constructive, pointing out good bits and bad, and saying how improvement can be made, never saying don't bother.

Your idea is a good one, and the meeting was necessary. We are talking about two very different fictional worlds, there has to be an artificail contrivance to get them together in a way that is necessary for the story so don't worry about that.

I will Pm Liss about the annon posting.

#41:  Author: SusanLocation: Carlisle PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2004 12:47 am

Sindhu, please do not take any notice of that post. People can give criticism without being rude about it. Hope this anonymous poster does not put you off writing more.

#42:  Author: RachLocation: Cheltenham, England PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2004 1:57 am

Sindhu - this is great - I love Antonia Forest, and I've always been disappointed that there weren't any more (although getting some of the non-school ones from GGBP has helped with that).

And as someone who reads a whole lot more than she posts, I just wanted to say that I think anyone who starts a drabble based on such familiar characters is extremely brave - and also incredibly creative. I'd love to be able to think of the ideas that drabblers do... and then to put them into such readable stories too. Very Happy

#43:  Author: Kathy_SLocation: midwestern US PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2004 7:06 am

Sindhu, don't be discouraged by the un-Chaletian action of this anonymous poster. You've been around long enough to know that your drabble is well within CBB norms. It's been quite a while since I read the AF series -- In fact, I don't think our library owned all of them -- so I can't comment on accuracy in the characterization of the AF characters. But I didn't see any real problem with your introduction except that it's just a beginning. It needs more.

#44:  Author: SindhuLocation: INDIA PostPosted: Sat Mar 27, 2004 7:48 am

Thanks everybody-I saw the message only now and to be honest, was a little crushed- Sad It was such a relief that all your posts were there immediately afterwards. I don't mind criticism, but REALLY- obviously I'm not laying claim to be a second Brent-Dyer or Forest merely by starting a drabble! I do admit that part of what"Guest" had to say had it's point- but HEY- I had to get the Marlows over to the CS SOMEHOW! Rolling Eyes

And I'm not asking this just because this post affected me, but what is happening?

Anyway, maybe blessing in disguise- I am NOT going to not write just because of this Mad Though I admit I may not have had the guts to start if I hadn't seen all your posts. I'll put up the next bit soon and thanks again Very Happy
Sindhu.

Hey Sindhu,

Just echoing the others in saying yay for planning to posting more. I think the criticism (whether it was valid or not) was couched in unpleasant terms, and I will delete it if you want, though am reluctant to just do so generally.

I checked the IP address, and I don't think it was a normal CBB-er being anonymous, if that's any comfort to people!

Please write some more, Sindhu!

I vaguely remember reading about the Marlows when I was younger; the names are definitely familiar and I'd love to read some more!

Glad you're not going to be put off by that anonymous post.

Sindhu, I have only just returned to this thread, but I'm glad you are not going to let that anonymous post put you off writing more.
If people don't have the courage to put their name to their posts then their opinions can be discounted as far as I'm concerned.

Sindhu, ignore this person. I also don't think it is a CBBer because s/he has put the title in the thread and no-one else actually bothers!

This was rather mean-spirited. Furthermore, if someone wishes to offer their opinion, they should at least have the guts to sign-in!!

I for one enjoyed the beginning of this story, even though I'm one who has never read any of the Marlow books.

Sindhu, this is great, and more please. I'll be interesting to compare the two Marlowe stories that are up at the moment.

As for the Anonymous Meanie, this is becoming disturbing. First we have the confrontation over in CGGU, now this. Can you trace to see if they're the same person, Liss, and block them in any way? We don't want people coming on and saying often vicious things and then not even having the courtesy to append a name.

Sindhu,

Just wanted to say that I am completely new to the CBB and have just read through your drabble and all the rest of the posts about it - all in one go. I want to echo what almost everyone else said - it's really good, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Good luck getting Nicola and Ginty to the CS... looking forward to the next bit!
Smile

We're all looking forward to seeing Nicola and Ginty actually getting to the CS, Sindhu. Yes, that is a big hint that we'd like some more.
