#1: The Loves and Life of Mary Constance Maynard Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Sat Jul 03, 2004 6:01 pm

I have written fanfics before, but this is my first attempt at a CS drabble and it has been relentlessly trying to force it's way in.

Be warned.... I have written a good 10,000 words already, so it will be long. But I thought I'd tease it out a little, as I need to connect a few sections. Also be warned.... it takes place over many years so things may change!

Anyway.... here goes.... don't be too harsh! Razz

Introduction

Con Maynard heaved a huge sigh and looked at herself in the mirror. It wouldn’t be Con Maynard for very much longer. The time had nearly come for her to make her way down the aisle to meet her fiancé and she could not for the life of her decide whether she was excited or nervous. It had been some time waiting for this moment, but now it was nearly here Con was terrified.

When Mamma and Len were around, things seemed so much easier. Both of them were already married, and had evidently survived, but it wasn’t that. It was more that they spent so much time fussing and annoying her with the little things, that Con didn’t have time to think of her upcoming event. Perhaps that was why they did it. Con chuckled to herself. If it was, the pair of them had been doing a fantastic job. But now Mamma had gone to chase up flowers or something, and Len was having a good rest, as befitted her condition.

She looked beautiful, Con knew that, but that made things worse. What if she did something wrong? Everyone would remember and she would never live it down. Her hair was up, but wavy strands hung down, framing her face with its pink and white complexion. The veil, which she had yet to put on, was the same one used by Mamma, Len and a few others, yet was still as dainty and pretty as ever. And the dress. The dress was stunning, there was no other word for it. The moment Con has seen it she had stood there open-mouthed in wonder, setting Len off into fits of giggles. It was intricately embroidered and white. Virginal white.

Con felt a little wrong about wearing virginal white, since she was not. There had been a few loves in her life, and while her husband-to-be knew all about it, and was fine with it, even admitting a couple of incidents himself, Con had never been able to tell her family. Well, mainly her parents and Len. Margot knew and was fine with it and Con had never really had an occasion to discuss it with the younger ones, but Mamma, Papa and Len? All three were stringent Catholics. Not that Margot wasn’t, she was more so than anyone else, but it was different. They came from an older era where things were different. Yes, even Len, Len who had had exactly the same upbringing as herself and Margot. So far they did not know, and Con fully intended to keep it that way. It would break their hearts and she was not going to do that without a very good reason.

Going through her loves in her head, Con began to realise just how important they had been. If it had not been for them, she would never have recognised true love when she saw it. She might have let it pass her by, and there where would she be? The family’s maiden aunt probably. But she had and there was no point in regretting it when she was about to embark on the greatest adventure of her life.

Part 1: School Years

It had begun what seemed like so long ago to Con now. She had been fourteen, yes, a mere fourteen years old. Throughout her school life, Con had been placed in classes with girls older than herself, except for, of course, Len. By the time she was twelve, she had been with girls of fourteen and fifteen. While it may not have seemed like she had matured back then, it had forced some growing up inside her.

Every term her classmates had come back with tales of boys. Without fail. The stories had not always involved Chalet girls, but usually friends of theirs from back home. Girls who would go on dates with boys, kiss them, and even one who had become pregnant at the age of fifteen. For the most part, these girls were not looked down upon, but in fact viewed rather wistfully. Those Chalet girls who did involve themselves with boys, by circumstance, were forced to conduct it totally within the holidays, and therefore relationships were short lived.

“Don’t worry about it,” Len had said the first time such topics had come up in conversation. “We’re much too young to be thinking of things like that. Come on, let’s take a walk round the rose garden. It’s looking wonderful at this time of year.”

Reluctantly, Con had followed her. She told herself then that she wanted to understand people so she could write her characters better, but it was not until much later that she had realised the truth. She yearned for the kind of fun the other girls talked about. It was hard for her; she always received less attention than either of her sisters. Len was so responsible and understanding about everything and everyone, except her sister’s loneliness. Margot was the firebrand, always the centre of attention. She had improved as she grew older, but every so often it flew to the fore once again. Having a boyfriend, or even a friendship with a boy, would have given Con some attention of her own.

Living on the Görnetz Platz gave very few opportunities for such a friendship. It seemed like half the people there were connected in the school in some way, and all their own boys were still children. Even with the few locals living there it was a similar story. They were either too old or too young, no opportunities for any misbehaviour there. And though there were a few at the San, they would mostly be too ill. Besides, that could get risky with her father around. Con had an idea that Mamma liked it like this. She was always complaining about how girls grew up so fast these days, and she had made it quite clear that she would not accept it for any of her own.

Therefore, Con had made up her mind early on to take any opportunity she was given. Len did not seem the least interested, and strangely, nor did Margot. She did not care how long she had to wait, she knew the time would come eventually. And sure enough it did, with the entrance of Roger Richardson during that first holiday in the Tirol.

If you insist!

Parts of the next few bits are taken from 'Joey and Co. in the Tirol' so any paragraphs in italics are EBD's words not mine (except where I've changed the tense or something for ease) and page numbers refer to the paperback edition. I've tried to make it so you don't need to have read the book to understand what's going on.

-----

Summer 1954

It was a gorgeous day at the Tiernsee, early in their holiday. The triplets had all awakened early, and knowing that Mamma needed to rest, had slipped out for a walk to Briesau before breakfast. As they made their way along the shore of the lake, they giggled over stories their mother had described to them.

At this point, the mountain wall swung out in a sharp curve and the path with it. The trio stepped out smartly as they rounded the curve. At almost exactly the same moment, two boys and a girl came tearing along in the opposite direction. The bigger boy, who was slightly ahead, crashed in between Len and Con, nearly knocking Con, who was nearest the edge, over into the lake. Len shrieked and grabbed wildly at her sister just in time to save her. He, having caught his tow in a rut, crashed headlong onto the path. The other two nearly fell over him, but Margot’s hand caught the grl’s arm and steadied her while the younger boy staggered madly and ended up in the ditch.

“Oh I say!” the girl panted as she got her balance. “I’m ghastly sorry! Thanks a lot! I might have taken quite a toss!” Then she was pouncing on the fallen leader. “Roger, you low hound! Hand that over pronto!” She dropped down on his back just as he was beginning to roll over, and stretched to snatch an exercise book he held in one hand. The other boy, having got to his feet, came to her aid.

“Two to one! Not fair!” Roger gasped, wriggling so vigorously that he nearly ridded himself of her.

“Not fair – nothing!” she retorted, clinging to her perch like grim death. “Take it from him Roddy!”

Roddy gave a wrench at the bppl and freed it. “Got it!” he announced triumphantly. “You can get up now, Ruey!”

Ruey was on her feet at once and grabbing her precious book from Roddy. Roger rolled over and began to sit up. Len gave a cry of dismay as he did so.

“Oh gosh! You’ve cut yourself – badly! Just look how you’re bleeding! And it’s filthy dirty too! We must stop this and get you cleaned up at once! Wet a hanky someone, and the rest of you tie yours together. This is an artery. It’s got to be tied up pronto!” (Joey and Co p29-30)

As they rushed to Roger’s aid, under Len’s direction, Con took the opportunity for take a good look at the elder boy. He was certainly quite a handsome chap, with his broad shoulders and tanned skin under a mop of red hair, perhaps a few years older than the triplets. Con curbed her thoughts immediately. She had only just met the guy, there was no need to throw herself at the first who came along! Or at least, not straight away.

“Con, go and see if you can find a phone anywhere and right for Father. If it’s an artery, it ought to be tied up as soon as possible.” (Joey and Co. p31)

Con jumped up immediately and rushed off. They had seen no one on the path this early in the morning, and the nearest chalet was some distance away. If the injury really was as bad as Len was making out, Roger needed help quickly. It was typical: the first eligible male she came across and he was badly injured!

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted some movement on the lake. A bit early wasn’t it? She squinted at the figure in the boat. Could it be? It was!

Suddenly she squawked, put her hands to her mouth and let out a long, clear yodel that carried right across the lake. the solitary boater, who had just paddled from the far side, heard her and glanced over his shoulder, by which time she was jumping up and down and waving madly.

“OK! It’s Papa! He’s got the boat out! He’s seen us and he’s heading fo here as hard as he can go!”

“Semaphore him ‘SOS’!” Len ordered. “I don’t like Roger’s looks at all!” (Joey and Co. p32)

* * *

Joey and Jack had taken over the well-being of the Richardsons as soon as they realised it was necessary. The Richardsons’ father was an astronomer who spent most of his time stargazing, living the children to do more or less as they wished, with Ruey in charge of the house. The members of society as upstanding as the Maynards, this was totally unacceptable, and Con was inclined to agree. It was no life for Ruey really, who was only a little younger than the triplets themselves.

Since his accident, Roger had been more or less confined to his bed. At first this had been in their chalet near the Tiern pass, but Jack Maynard had decreed it too isolated for them to stay over night, and so they had moved him to Die Blumen, the Maynard holiday home.

This had pleased Con no end. From the first moment she had set eye on Roger, she had liked in. And not in the same way that Len and Margot liked him. Though he was vulnerable after his injury, Con found this quite exciting, especially since it looked like he was usually so strong and she felt she would appreciate both those traits in a man.

Today was a few after the accident, bust still Roger had to stay inactive, something he loathed. Mamma had had a bad night with the twins, Philippa and Geoffrey and so she had stayed in bed a while longer. Len and Margot had taken it upon themselves to teach Ruey about babies. They had invited Con to join them, but since there were only the two babies, it was not really necessary. Roddy had disappeared to check out some fallen trees.

That left just Con and Roger. Despite her usual confidence, Con suddenly acquired some shyyness – no mean feat for a member of the Maynards! How was she to start a conversation? Butterflies grew to the size of houses in her stomach, but eventually she took the plunge and took elevenses to him, sitting as he was on the veranda, leg stretched out in front of him, watching the other girls from a distance.

“Tea?” she offered nervously. “I brought some of Anna’s best cream cakes. They’re delicious!” She sat down on the little stool, setting the tray on the coffee table that had been moved outside for exactly this purpose.

Roger acquiesced easily, secretly glad of a little company. “Cheers. What happened to Roddy?”

“He went off to climb a couple of trees that blew down last winter. Apparently they make a great base or something.”

The elder Richardson sighed so heavily. “Wish I could do that. It’s the perfect day for that kind of thing.”

“You’ll be up and about before you know it.”

There was a slight pause after Con’s reassuring comment, as both took the opportunity to take a few bites of one of Anna’s delectable cakes. Having scoffed his tremendously quickly, Roger quickly restarted the conversation. “Doesn’t Ruey look awkward holding a baby!”

Con giggled. “She sure does! Oh look, she’s never going to manage that! Shouldn’t Len say… ah there we go.” Ruey had found herself tangled along with Philippa and only Len’s quick correction helped her keep her balance. “I don’t suppose she’s had much experience with babies though, has she?”

“None at all that I know of. Not since Roddy was young anyway, and hoenstly, so was she back then! Even I barely remember it.”

From that point on they chatted quite amiably, all of Con’s nerves completely disappeared. She was mesmerised by his deep voice and friendly manner. Once or twice Len looked back from the centre of the garden to make sure things seemed okay, and all she could see was two friends deep in conversation. Once or twice she thought she spotted them just gazing, not saying anything at all, but she quickly put that thought out of her head. That would just be silly.

Can you tell my favourite character is Con? :p

------

Con was sat on the tiny mountain train with her mother, Roger and Ruey. The four of them had to go down to Innsbruck, leaving Die Blumen in the capable hands of Anna and Len. Her sandal had broken and as she had no spares, it was necessary to get a new pair. Ruey was currently engaged in an argument with Joey about the necessity of having more clean clothes while Con and Roger made eyes at each other.

Once Con had been fitted for new sandals and Roger’s business was also complete, Joey has sent the pair off to visit the Hofkirche while she purchased Ruey a completely new set of attire. With Mrs Maynard out of sight, and his sister as well, Roger did what he’d been planning on doing for a while as soon as they were along. He grabbed her hand and yelled, “Come on!” taking her through the streets to a quaint little side street where they could know they would not be disturbed.

With his back to the wall, he drew small Con closer. “So Miss Maynard….”

He got no further than that, for Con decided to take her chance before she chickened out. Standing on tip toes, she leaned forward and planted a kiss firmly on his lips, eyes gleaming. “Yes?”

“Nevermind.”

The pair of them stayed there for a while, simpley basking in in other. After a while though, they left, knowing that they would need to meet Mrs Maynard later, and it would not do to be late, especially with her formidable powers of deduction.

They raced through the visit to the Hofkirche, fingers intertwined all the way through. Having enjoyed the visit of just the two of them, both Con and Roger were disappointed when the clock chimed midday and they had to join with Mrs Maynard and Joey.

“We’re late! We’d better hurry!” Con pulled her hand from Roger’s and started to run. Despite all their good intentions, they had been distracted by their last moments alone just after leaving the church. Quite honestly, it was hard to keep their eyes off each other. She started running towards the square.

“There’s Mrs Maynard,” Roger panted, pointing. “But where’s Ruey?”

Both stopped dead still when they saw Mrs Maynard’s companion. Con realised immediately, and began to giggle, but Roger was not so sure. Having un-dropped his jaw, he stuttered, “R… Ruey? Is that really you?”

For Ruey now looked the trim schoolgirl, much as the triplets did, but without their beautifully cut features and colouring. Gone were her rats tails and now Roger barely recognised her.

“Come on then, children,” said Joey in an authoritarian manner. “Let’s go find some eats. I know a lovely little café just around the corner. I wonder if the owner will remember me?” She led the way, Ruey at her side, with Con and Roger dropping behind a little.

“Silly,” teased Con playfully, punching him lightly on the arm. “She’s not changed that much!”

Roger stuck out his tongue rather childishly. “It’s all right for you! You’re a girl! You know these things!”

“Did you enjoy the Hofkirche?” Joey interrupted as they reached the café.

Con nodded vigorously. “Oh yes, Mamma. It was really beautiful.”

Joey let it lie at that, and never noticed the surreptitious game of ‘footsie’ that occurred during the meal. Or anything else of that ilk.

Oh go on then. This part concludes 1954.

----

Ruey, who had clambered into the Tub, gave [her brother] a yell. “Hi, Roger!” Mrs Maynard wants to speak to you at once. Better scram! She’s waiting in the garden.”

Roger waved an arm above his head to show that he understood, turned over and made for the Buchau landing with a powerful crawl which got him there in short order. He clambered out onto the shore-road, incidentally startling a couple of elderly ladies who had been so busy chatting that they never noticed him in the water and when six foot or so of young man heaved itself out of the water and crossed the road a few yards in front of them, clad only in the exiguous swimming trunks the boys all wore, they shrieked with dismay and alarm. Roger took no notice (Joey and Co. p161)

It was unfortunate that at this moment, Con happened to look up in his direction as she was clambering into the Tub. The sight of his tanned and toned body climbing up and out of the water in those tiny trunks made her literally weak at the knees. She lost her footing and fell out of the boat and into the lake, dragging Ruey along with her

“Hey!” spluttered Ruey, rather annoyed at her unexpected dunking. “What was that for?”

Len was more concerned with Con’s well-being. It was very unlike her to miss the boat. “Are you okay, Con? I mean, you’re not hurt or anything, are you?”

“No, no,” replied Con hurriedly. “I just lost my footing, that’s all. Honest.”

Her elder sister was satisfied with that answer, and having made sure she was safely in the boat said no more about it. Con was far to embarrassed by her temporary lapse to say anything for a while, but at least Roger had not seen her fall in!

I briefly mention letters in this one, though there's more later.

-----

Summer 1955

Con leapt out of bed, full of the joys of the world. Today was the day the Richardsons would be joining them for another summer holiday at the Tiernsee, and more specifically, Roger. She was friends with Ruey, and Roddy was okay, but it was the eldest of the three she was most interested in seeing.

It had been some time now, since she had seen him. A long time in fact. They had written to each other, but had to be careful, so as not to arouse suspiscion. Even considering this, Roger was a poor letter writer. Not only was his scrawl second only to his father’s for being unintelligible, but he never wrote half as much as Con did.

They meet them at the little station in Spärtz in the early part of the evening. Con knew she could hope for much interaction, not with everyone else, let alone a guest, in the form or Mélanie Lucas, but a few glances would sate her for the time being. They would still have several weeks together.

“Hi! We haven’t got to walk up have we?” Roddy demanded.

“No my lad. We’re going up in Minnie,” his guardian told him.

“Who’s Minnie?” It came as a chorus from the three.

“Minnie the minibus,” Joey said swiftly. “It’ll be a bit of a jam, but we can manage alright. They finished the new road up to the Tiernsee last April, so we may as well use it.”

“You’ve got a minibus? Roger exclaimed. “But when? You never said a word about it in your letters last term.” (Future p112-113)

Though he spoke in broad terms, Con knew from his brief glance that really he meant her. And he looked a little annoyed. Luckily, her mother came to the rescue for once, albeit unintentionally.

“She only arrived a day or two before we came here,” Joey explained. “I didn’t know myself, until almost the last.” (Future p113)

Roger’s face relaxed almost instantly, and Con breathed an internal sigh of relief. She did not want this holiday spoiled over something so silly. They were here to have fun, and have fun she would!

Strangely, at this point, my mind wasn't even in the gutter! Lol! Very Happy

-----

The day dawned bright and sunny, but with a light breeze to temper the worst of the heat. Joey, seated behind her big coffee-urn, looked down the long table at her husband and remarked, “This looks to me like a day made on purpose.”

“Made on purpose for what?” he demanded.

“And excursion my love – an excursion. What else? And I propose the Zillerthal, which will be new ground to everyone but us two. Breakfast is early; it’s a glorious day and Phil and Geoff seem to have got over their teething for the moment. I can go with a free mind. What about it everyone?”

She had no need to ask that twice. Everyone was all over the idea and the noise they made about it might have been heard to the far end of the lake. Even the doctor was heard to say how fortunate it was yesterday he had Minnie refuelled and oiled so that she was all ready.

“What about eats?”Margot queried. “Do we feed there or take our own?”

“Oh, take our own of course!” This was Roger. “I don’t want to have to jam into a crowded Speisesaal at some hotel and wait for an hour before we can get anything to eat. Rod and Steve and I can dash down to Spärtz by train and buy fruit. You can pick us up there, can’t you Uncle Jack?”

“Easily!” The doctor felt in his blazer pocket and produced his wallet. “Here you are! That ought to be enough.”

“Then we’d better get off or we’ll miss the train.” Roger looked at his watch. “We’ve got ten minutes exactly. Come on you two! Excuse us Auntie Joey!”

The three went tearing off, peausing only long enough to snatch linen hats from the hatrack before they rushed out of the house and along to the terminus of the little cogwheel railway. (Future p144-145)

Con gazed after his as they fled, wishing they could be a little more obvious about it. He did look could when he ran. Roger was a broad young man, and moving quickly only made him look more powerful. She longed to be back in those arms. She thought that just before he left with Steve and Roddy that she saw him throw her a wink, but it could have just been a trick of the light. Probably was, in fact, otherwise everyone would have noticed. She sighed. Just thinking that showed how dreamy she was over it! Idly, she realised her mother was talking, but was too absorbed in her own thoughts to really pay attention.

“Con, you and I will see to the beds.” Len cried, bouncing out of her chair after gulping down the last of her coffee in a most unladylike way. “You come too, Mélanie. Margot, you and Ruey clear the table. Then we must all turn to and cut sandwiches. Goodness knows if Anna has anything ready!” (Future p145)

Meekly, the middle triplet followed her elder sister up the stairs, followed by an equally meek Mélanie. It was strange how Len always seemed the most forward, and certainly the most mature, of the triplets, yet she had not awakened yet to the opposite sex as anything other than friends. Perhaps it was all that responsibility people kept piling on her. She must have no time for anything else.

“Right,” Len said decisively. “Con, you and I will do the sheets, and Mélanie, you take the pillow cases. Any objections?” Of course there were none. “Oh I am looking forward to the Zillerthal! It should be totally gorgeous! Don’t you think?” Mélanie agreed emphatically, but Con was still lost in her thoughts. “Con? Are you okay?”

This time Con heard her. “I’m fine,” she apologised, “I was just…. lost in a story.”

Len nodded knowingly. “Best get it out your system quickly. You don’t want to miss anything today!”

The ‘lost in a story’ excuse was working very well still. In was good, for it was not exactly untrue. She was lost in a story, just not the one people expected. Through her life she had been dreamy, far more so than her sisters, and it still persisted, no matter how hard she tried. And she really did try. Now, while she was not always in the throes of a new story, she was often deep in thought and the result was the same. All the same, Len was right…. this was a trip not to be missed.

Stop putting ideas in my head, lol Wink Luckily I've already written these bits, so no influence!

Just a short bit. More later.

-----

In Spärtz, they found the boys waiting for them at the foot of the mountain. Roger was carrying a flat case of plaited straw underone arm and a basket containing a magnificent melon on the other. Stephen and Roddy had a big basket of pears between them and Roddy bore a big bag of grapes in his free arm. Stephen was loaded with a basket of grapes.

A few minutes later, Roger and the other two were in the bus.Roddy and Stephen sat together. They were great chums. Roger took the remaining seat, and Joey, turning around, called Con to come and share with him.

“We’ve quite a way to go before we reach Mayrhofen,” she said, “and you’ll be horribly crampedif you all sit together like that. You can change with someone else later. Come on, Con!” (Future p148-149)

Con almost could not believe her ears! Normally it was Len they tried to put with Roger all the time. Inwardly, she was pleased, but she was unable to let it show. Not that she minded. Roger’s face said almost the same thing as she was feeling as she plonked herself down next to him. Not too close, but so far away she could not touch him.Delicately she reached out a hand, and the hole trip, they caressed each others hands, unbeknownst to the rest of the crowd in the minibus.

These drabbles are dangerous! Everytime I have an idea and start to develop it, my characters are influenced by the way they're portrayed in these drabbles - i.e Con in this, amongst others.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

#58:  Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Tue Jul 06, 2004 5:40 pm

One more part for today Smile

I think CGGU influenced me a little, even though I tried not to let it!

Though really, I based it more on me at that age. I wasn't writing erotic stories in my head, but they were childishly romantic!

-----

Near silently, Con slipped out of her bedroom and tiptoed her way along the corridor in the dark, just as she had so many times before. She and Roger had been meeting in secret in an old store room. It was not ideal, but it was far enough away they would not accidentally disturb people. Or rather, they would reduce their chances. On several occassions it had been the leaving or returning to bedrooms that had caused someone else to wake, usually Mamma or Len, though once Papa had also been awakened. Hurried excuses had been concocted, yet so far, no one seemed to have cottoned on to it.

Roger was already waiting for her when she arrived. Taking her gently in his arms, and planting a kiss firmly on her lips, “Where have you been? I’ve been waiting ages!”

“Careful,” Con replied in a low tone. “Don’t you know that whispers carry? We don’t want to wake anyone, remember!”

She snuggled in to his strong arms, sensitive to his every breath. These snatched moments were absolutely wonderful for her, and hopefully for him as well. She raised her curly black head to his and kissed him passionately, just as always. She could never tire of this, she thought to herself. It was far to enjoyable, and the fact that they were not supposed to be doing it only made it all the better.

Suddenly, there was the sound of a floorboard creaking somewhere nearby. They separated instantly, hearts racing. “What was that?” Roger hissed urgently.

Con shushed him as she listened carefully. Slowly she peeked her head around the door, just in case. There was no sign of anyone walking around. Con turned back to Roger and shook her head. “Nothing. Can’t see anything at all.” She hoped she sounded more confident about it than she really was. Something told her someone was about, but there was no evidence of it.

“Well then, where were we?” Roger gathered her up again, just in time for the door to fly open and reveal a figured standing in the doorway.

I'm loving this, its so perfectly illustrates that age, and sneeking around parents.

We used to go and stay with my mum's Best Friend and her family every year, they had a son the same age as me, and this is just us to a T.

We used to play murder in the dark... Hide and seek but with the lights off, and we would hide together and kiss Embarassed

and the lack of opportunity to be together when there is a house full, in our case 4 adults and 6 kids in a 3 bedroom house did not make for many opportunities....sigh

Sorry! I didn't mean to leave you all hanging on this long, but my internet was down this morning (evil NTL) and then I had to go to work where I have no internet! (I did try to get it - apparently I need a posh password).

Anyway, the wait is over!

-----

“Well then, where were we?” Roger gathered her up again, just in time for the door to fly open and reveal a figured standing in the doorway.

“M-M-Margot?” Con stammered nervously. “Wha-wha-wha,” she could not even get the words out properly. This could all be disastrous.

But Margot was totally calm and did not seem in the least bit surprised. Instead she was all business. “Roger, I think you’d better get back pretty sharpish. I heard Roddy moving around and he might wake up any time soon.” When Roger seemed to hesitate she waved him on urgently, “Go, go! Seriously!” This time he went, with one last longing look in Con’s direction.

Con smiled, despite herself, and the next thing she knew was Margot had taken her in one giant bearhug. Totally confused, Con somehow managed to get out a question. “Margot, are you quite all right?”

Releasing her triplet sister, Margot beamed even more broadly than before. “Oh Con, I’m so pleased! I always felt one of us should at least!”

“What… what do you mean? I’m not sure I understand, Margot.”

“Well, one of us had to rebel like this! And it was never going to be Len… she’s far too prim and proper!”

“But what about yourself?” Con blurted out. She never had had much tact, and occassionally things still slipped out without thinking.

For the first time Margot floundered a little. “Oh, I dunno. I think my fate lies elsewhere. But I’m so pleased for you! For a while there I thought you were going to be like Len!”

Despite herself, Con turned pink again. All too often she was lumped in with either one or both of her triplet sisters. For the first time, she really felt special. “Well, ta for the flowers, Margot, but please, you won’t tell anyone will you? Mamma would die if she found out and Papa would be raging!”

“I think it’s Len you need to be more worried about!” As she caught Con’s quizzical glance, she expanded her statement. “It’s expected from Mother and Dad, but Len? She’d be far more disapproving. And for longer as well. Don’t worry, I won’t say anything. I still think it’s fantastic!” She gave her sister another quck hug. “Come on, we’d best get back to bed.”

Inwardly, Con felt so relieved as she lay her head down on the pillow. Not only had she relieved her burden, but Margot had also made her feel like she stood out from the crowd. And it felt amazing. She snuggled the blankets around her and settled to dream of Roger, safe in the knowledge that she was, at long last, able to be different.

“I’m dying to see Auntie and tell her everything.” Mélanie said, “but I almost wish I were coming back with you.”

Mrs Raymond was to meet them in Berne to collect her neice and carry her off to the new home in Montreaux, Berne being closer than Interlaken.

“Oh well, you’ll be seeing us in less than a fortnight,” Con said comfortingly. “Anyhoe, you won’t have time to miss us with all your outfit to see to. Don’t forget to see that every single thing is clearly marked with your full name. Matey won’t love you if you don’t.”

“Too true!” Len sighed. “I can see us all spending the next few days sewing on nametapes. And we have the boys’ to see to as well as our own.”

“It’s been a gorgeous holiday,” Ruey said cheerfully. “Better, even, than last year’s – and that was marvellous, goodness knows!”

“Hasn’t it?” Con agreed. “And,” with a wicked look at Roger, “no on has tried to half-kill themselves.” (Future p238-239)

Even though Roger refused to rise, Con knew she would pay for that comment later. Or rather, that was why he had chosen not to rise. Later, when they were alone, he would pretend to be offended by her cheeky jibe, and she would have to give forth a variety of platitudes of adoration before he would look at her properly again. She had done it to him before, it was only fair!

Though last year’s holiday in the Tirol had been that magical start of things between her and Roger, she really did agree that this one had been even better. Incidents had been minor…. even her own accident with the wine!… and as a consequence, more enjoyable. And then there was the fact that though she and Roger had not progressed to the next level yet, for she was still young, they were more comfortable. Since Margot had caught them that night, Con had found herself more relaxed around him. She had a lot to thank Margot for, other than her help in covering. It was a real shame they would soon be separated by school.

-----

January 1956

After the incident in the snow, and the subsequent sleepwalking, Con had been sent down to Montreaux and the Emburys for a few days. She and Len had, along with one of the younger girls, been caught out for some time in a sudden January blizzard and it had weighed quite heavily on young Con’s mind. Everyone had assumed she had outgrown her tendancy to sleepwalk, and so had been completely surprised at her exploits.

It was so much more peaceful down here than at school, or even home. Both those places were complete hustle bustle all the time, and it felt great to just relax for a while. Plus, it gave her a chance to write to Roger without having to hide who she was writing to. That made a change.

Taking one last gaze at the cars going past the window, she scribbbed her final line about how she missed him and looked forward to being together again, before Mrs. Embury popped her head round into the salon and called, “Are you finished, dear? We’d best hurry to the store before it closes.”

“Nearly done!” Con replied, as she signed her name with a flourish and stuffing it into an ill-fitteny envelope and skipping out the door after her temporary carer, hair bobbing down her back. She looked the complete schoolgirl; no one suspected her little secret.

This time she had written a lengthy epistle, detailing exactly what had happened during the blizzard and how she had felt. It was one way to put it out of her mind once and for all, but she also wanted a little attention from him. Since the beginning of term he had been rather quiet, and it did not even seem he would be at Freudesheim for Easter. The Richardsons would be staying with their cousins, the Rosomons, in England, as Mamma was holding a house party. Enjoyable, it would certainly be, but it would mean Con and Roger would not be together until the summer, at to Con, that felt miles away.

Still, she thought to herself, this letter should really make him sit up and take notice.

Like her mother before her, Margot had a horrow of the dentist and all his works. She kept the trouble to herself, even when the occassional twinges became a steady nagging which upset her nerves and made her edgy. For once, neither of her sisters realised it. Con was absorbed in a delightful secret which, out of school, filled her thoughts completely. (Triplets p80)

“Was there any post, Margot?” Con asked innocently, since her sister Len was also within earshot.

“Yes,” Margot growled, “Plenty. But none for you.”

Con’s face dropped, but she did not notice Margot’s tone. “Oh well. Perhaps tomorrow.”

She should really have had a reply from Roger. Did he not care? No, she told herself, there must be some delay with the post. There often was. Or perhaps he had not had much of a chance to write. He was in his last year of school after all, and he did have exams in his final term.

Well, I'm rationing as I haven't written the final connecty part yet (ie. end of part 1) and I need to leave myself enough time to decide what to write there.

And also because then I have more of a buffer for later.

Fear not though, the next part will go up tomorrow morning before work. Assuming NTL doesn't die again.

As for Margot... she kind of wrote herself. I've never really been a big Margot fan, but it just seemed to flow with that bit.

Sorry Smile

It's here now....

-----

Where was Roger’s letter? It had been over a month since she had written to him. Surely he should have responded by now?

It was too early to go and check the post yet. Miss Dene was never able to sort them before break, and that was when the train was on time. She sighed loudly. It had been a long wait and a few more hours would not hurt. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself.

When it came to break time, Con practically flew along to the hall, but had evidently been beaten my Margot, who met her at the door, brandishing a large grin and an envelope. “This what you’ve been waiting for?”

Despite her good training, Con temporarily forgot her manners and practically snatched it from hre younger triplet’s hands. “Finally! He does take his time!” Hmm. It seemed a little light. Well, it was quality, not quantity that mattered.

“Cave!” Margot warned quickly. “If you want to bury yourself in it, I’d do it someone else.”

Len and Rosamund Lilley had just rounded the corner. “Hallo there!” greeted Len. “Anything for us?”

Margot held out three letters. “Two for you Ros, and one for you, sis. Looks Auntie Daisy’s handwriting.

“Oh fantastic!” Len cried. “I haven’t heard from her in ages!” Thankfully she was so immersed in in her own, she never even noticed the letter Con had in her hand. Ros did, but merely raised an eyebrow and ignored it. She had never had the sheltered upbringing of the triplets, though it was by no means a bad one. Did Rosamund suspect something? If she did, she kept it very quiet.

There was no time to read Roger’s letter until the midday rest period. When that came, Con found herself a nice, quiet corner and settled herself to read, knowing that it could not possibly live up to the expectations she had built up.

Yet even though she knew this, Con was not preprared for the words she faced with in. Roger had not only written a letter of few pages, but what there was consisted of very spaced out scrawl, not unlike his own father’s. And his reaction to her horrific experience was lacklustre in the extreme.

“Blizzard sounds extreme,” he had written. “But you all coped. We’ve not had any snow here. Just rain. Lots of rain. It’s made the rugby pitch a complete mess, and the football one isn’t any better.”

And that was it. There was nothing in the entire letter that really made it sound as if he was the least bit interested in anything. It was like her whole world had just collapsed. Why was he no longer interested? Was there something wrong with her? Con was as hasty as most girls of her age and immediately lept to that conclusion.

She dwelled on this quite significantly over the next few days. There had to be a reason for it. And the more Con thought about it, the more she actually did not seem to mind as much. Perhaps it would be for the best. Roger was off to university in September, where he would surely be around plenty of girls, as well as copius amounts of alcohol. Con may be young, but she knew what went on there. Would she be able to cope with that? Looking deep in herself, Con knew that while she was here in Switzerland, she would get insanely jealous. And that was never a good thing.

For that matter? Did she even want him anymore? Sure, she had lost herself in him for a while, but where was it going? The enjoyment was already fading, and Con was not prepared to take the next step just yet. She was still only sixteen; there was plenty of time for that later. Roger was older than she was. Only two years, but at their age, it made all the difference. He would never force her, Con knew that, but he might wish it.

After a week of hard thought on the issue, Con made her decision. She would write another letter to him immediately and tell him that she thought it best if they no longer saw each other as anything other than friends.

The question was…. how would he take it?

I guess we'll find out when Con sends her letter.

Oh poor Margot.... she always gets the blame! Lol.

Here's more. Soooo corny. I wasn't that happy with this section, but oh well.

-----

A mere two days after Con had finally got her letter sent out, she found another letter waiting on the slab for her. Strange. This time she had got there before anyone else, due to a cello lesson that had ended just before break, and she managed to make it out to the rose garden before anyone else made it anywhere near the stash.

She ripped the letter open. There was no point in waiting. As she had guessed from the postmark and scrawl on the envelope, it was indeed from Roger. And having scanned the contents, all she could do was laugh.

“Dear Con,” Roger had written. “I’m not really sure how to approach this, so I’ll just come out and say it and sorry if I hurt your feelings. I think recently we’ve grown apart. Things just aren’t the same anymore. It’s come to the point where I see you as more of a friend than a girlfriend.

“Perhaps if we could have been more open about it with your family (and mine) things would have been different. But as it is, there are so many things expected of me I just don’t think we should continue anymore.

“I hope you can understand my reasons for doing this, and I hope we can continue to be friends. I would hate to lose that.

“Roger.”

It was significantly shorter than her own, which had gone deeply into her feelings on the issue as Con was subject to do, but the gist was the same. It was rather ironic that they must have sent them off close together, neither knowing what the other was about to do. It looked like things would be just fine.

At that moment she spotted Ricki Fry and Odette Mercier heading her way. Con shoved Roger’s final letter in her pocket and ran off to join them, feeling far more relaxed than she had since the incident in the snow.

I'm thinking it's time for an Embury or two? Question is - which? (can't remember their ages.)

Really enjoying this by the way. I've always liked Con & I'm glad she's getting some happiness/experience that isn't broadcast around half the school & the rest of the family.

You're making a really good job of the characterisation as well. So all that's left to say is - MORE PLEASE!

#128:  Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Sat Jul 10, 2004 7:35 am

Oh I never thought of the Emburys! The school part was inspired by the books themselves, and they only really go there at a distance so to speak. We never really see them interract.

There will be some stuff from now on NOT related to Con's loves.... especially when I get to the university years. Which aren't that far off.

I'm gonna have to slow down a bit now, or I'll start hitting the point I've written up to! But here's a part for you to be getting on with Very Happy

-----

Easter 1956

The Sunday afternoon sun hung high in the spring sky as the Maynard triplets made their way along the Platz to visit their Aunt Grizel at the Sanatorium. Or rather, two of the triplets. Margot had been intending to join them, but had started with a head cold the night before and Matey had put paid to any last hope she had of joining them.

“Do you think she’ll be able to come ‘home’ soon?” Con asked her elder sister. “Papa did say she was making good progress.”

Len shrugged. “I don’t know. She did seem rather tired last time. Happier though. She’s definitely happier. Odd… you’d think she’d have been less happy cooped up in bed!”

A short time earlier, during the reunion Joey Maynard had planned at Freudesheim, there had been an accident, and Grizel Cochrane had injured herself in saving Len’s life. She had been confined to the Sanatorium, unable to move at present from a lying position, though they had started to use a pillow so she was not always flat. With an injury like hers, progress would always be slow.

Con had her own ideas about the change in their honorary aunt, but she kept them quietly to herself. Most of what she knew had been gleaned not from either of the participants, but from Ian Hamilton, a junior doctor who had been in the company of Neil Sheppard at the time of the accident. He was rather nice, that Dr. Hamilton. Totally unlike Roger in so many ways. Though they both had red hair, Roger’s was darker, a bit like Len’s, whilst Dr. Hamilton’s was fiery. Dr. Hamilton also shared her love of reading, something Roger never had really appreciated, and they had already conducted many in-depth discussions on reading material.

They met Dr. Entwistle just inside the building. “Hullo there, Len. And you too Con.” He nodded at each of them in turn, but the greeting to Con was a slight afterthought. “You here to visit Grizel?”

Nodding eagerly, chesnut ponytail bouncing, Len confirmed the visit, before adding, “Oh, Mamma sent a message for you.”

Not really listening to their amiable chatter, Con gazed around the room. There were only a few people in there. A bored looking receptionist and a mother with her son, probably waiting to visit someone. She sighed. Con had been hoping she would see Dr. Hamilton here. He was around here sometimes.

As they turned to go to Grizel’s room, Con spotted him out the corner of her eye. He must have seen her at exactly the same moment, for he quickened his pace and called, “Con!”

All three turned around as hurried up to greet them. “Con, I was to catch you. I brought that book you said you were interested in reading. Do you remember? The one I was telling you about last week.”

Con had to try very hard not to allow her excitement to bubble over. “Thank you, Dr. Hamilton,” she said quite calmly.

“You know you can call me Ian, don’t you?”

She suddenly went all shy. “It just doesn’t seem right, not using your title,” she stammered.

‘Ian’ laughed at her. “It’s not that important really. Honestly, it makes me feel rather old. Are you visiting Grizel? I’ll drop the book in before you leave.”

Con thanked him and disappeared with Len and Reg to Grizel’s pretty little room. But to tell the truth, it was difficult for her to keep her mind on the conversations at hand. It was a silly infatuation, she knew that, but nevertheless, she could not settle properly until he had indeed taken the time to give her the book.

ROFL

How true. Much as I love my best-beloved, that sums him up completely. Don't think that he'd agree I restrict myself to once a month though.

Really enjoying this, but can anyone give me some idea of the age gap between Con and Ian? Just feeling slightly twitchy here, and can't lay hands on the relevant book at the moment.

Would now be a good time to mention that I'm rarely nice to my characters and Con has got off lightly so far?

Following this part there will be an explanation of why.

-----

Skipping along the road to the Sanatorium, Con hugged the book close to her chest. She had been sent with a message for her father, as the phone lines appeared to be down again, but had taken the opportunity to return Dr. Hamilton’s book, as she had finished it the night before. Con had started reading it almost immediately, but somehow school had got in the way as usual, and it had taken her over a week.

Whether he would be there or not, Con could not know, yet something inside her really hoped he would be. Since she had borrowed the book she had seen nothing of him, not like Len and Reg, who was always popping into Freudesheim. When it came to it, even is she had finished the book before yesterday, she would not have been able to return it. This at least gave her a reason to speak to him now.

Having delivered the message to her father first, she was fortunate enough to run into Dr. Sheppard. “Oh hello, Dr. Sheppard! Is Dr. Hamilton around?” She thrust out her burden. “I need to return this to him.”

He smiled at her. “Now, young Con, I know he has specifically asked you to call him Ian. Between you and me, I think it makes him feel old.” He sobered up and continued, “But I doubt you will see him for some time. He was called back to England yesterday.”

Yesterday??? She really did not have any luck at all. First the fizzling out of her relationship with Roger, nw her rebound infatuation had ended before it even really began. “Oh,” she said, looking measurably downcast. “Do you know when he will return? I really feel I should return his book.”

“I really don’t know,” Dr. Sheppard replied, shaking his head. “It may be some time. He might not even return for anything other than a visit. I can take it for you, if you don’t want to hang on to it in the interim.”

Con thanked him and turned to return to school, but Dr. Sheppard stopped her. “He did leave a parcel for you though.”

“A parcel?” Con did not need to feign surprise. She had had no idea Dr. Hamilton would do that.

“Just one moment, I’ll fetch it for you.” He returned carrying a small brown parcel, about the size of a book before leaving her to it.

Con took a seat in the reception area and ripped open the package. It was indeed a book, brand new by the look of things, and one they had discussed some time previously. At the time he had told her he did not own it, and had not even seen a copy in years.

Sticking out of the front page was a handwritten note, in untidy doctor scrawl, though it was still more legible than Roger’s. There was also an inscription on the front page.

“Con,

“On a trip down to Interlaken I spotted this in a bookshop. I knew I’d mentioned it to you before, and thought you might like to read it. I would have liked to give it to you in person, but I have to return to England immediately.

“I will miss our literary discussions. Few people are as interested as you and I.

“Ian Hamilton.”

Hugging the letter and book close to her chest, Con sighed romantically. Perhaps he did like her after all. Noth that it really helped, since he was a long way away. And even older than Roger. Well, it was not like she really had a relationship with Dr. Hamilton anyway. He was just a friend. And now it looked like that was all he would be.

As she ran back to school, errand completed, Con thought about her chances of finding someone new while she was still at school. Very slim, she decided. As before, there was a positive dearth of eligible males her own age. With the departure of Dr. Hamilton it was pretty much none. There was Dr. Entwistle, Reg as she knew him, but Con had eyes. She could see the way he looked at Len. Yet Len did not seem to notice. Or at least not yet. It could not be long now. She was sixteen, same age as Con. And Reg did not seem the type to wait forever. Len would realise soon enough.

------

now I LIKE Dr Hamilton, and would have liked to include more of him here, but unfortunately, midway through Reunion (I have the page number written down somewhere) there's a comment about how Dr Sheppard has gone to stay with Dr Hamilton in Hampstead. And how Dr Hamilton has bought a motorbike. Neither of these bits suggest to me that Dr Hamilton was still on the Platz from that point on (nay, in fact he is living in Hampstead!) and so I had no choice but to do this.

However, it WOULD have been nice to see Roger's reaction to her crush on Dr Hamilton. But now I don't really mention much of Roger, so it's draw your own conclusion time! Plus I'm about to skip twoish years.

You'll all just have to wait and see! :p I've planend for all the way through uni, hehehehehe Twisted Evil

But I'll be extra nice and give you another part now, as you'll probably only get one tomorrow.

-----

Summer 1958

“What about you?” Margot demanded. “You're facing a big adventure, too, aren't you?”
Len flushed. “Nothing is settled and I don't know if it's what I shall finally want. Anyhow, I'm doing nothing until I've got my degree, that's flat.”

Con chuckled. “Well, you may have to reckon with Reg, my love. He knows what he wants, all right!”

Len shook her head. “He may, but I don't. It's something you've got to be very sure of. Anyhow, I want my degree before I settle to anything else. That means a wait of two if not three years. There's plenty of time to think it over.”

“Poor Reg!” Con laughed.

“If he really wants you he'll be patient,” Margot said, her blue eyes searching her elder sister's face. “But it's going to mean a few changes for him. However, I imagine he's thought of all that.” (Prefects p86)

Unless Con seriously missed her guess, Len knew exactly what she wanted, she just was not ready to admit it yet. For the past two years she had watched Len and Reg, and it was blindingly obvious to her. Of course, Len had shielded her self from an interest in boys. Perhaps that had clouded her judgement when it came to things like this.

Quite simply though, it was not at all fair. Con had been looking around for four years now, and she was left with nothing. Yet Len, who did not really care one way or the other, had managed to snag a potential husband without even trying! Though she was happy for her sister, she was a wonderful person after all, Con could not help feeling that maybe there was something wrong with her. Why could she not find a man?

As usual, though Con never let it show anymore, it made Con feel the diminished triplet, the shadowy one no one noticed. Len the nearly-engaged one, Margot the pretty one who was to become a medical missionary. Both things that people loved to talk about. Then there was Con, the middle one. Sure, she had her writing, but somehow that never seemed as interesting. Once again, she was pushed back behind her sisters. For the first time in ages, she missed Roger, even if it were for the wrong reasons.

There may be a slight hiatus after this part... I need to write an extra one.

-----

It was late by the time Len returned from her trip to Freudesheim, Con knew she could not talk to her just then. After Reg had been lost in a flood, Len had been tremendously worried about him and had not had a moments peace until he was found. Even after that she had been on edge until she had beem able to see him.

The whole school had noticed it, even the Middles, though they did not put two and two together as many of the Seniors already had. After Len had pulled up a fair number of Upper IV B in particular for various minor breaches of rules, most of them were rather vocal in their annoyance at her, especially Val Pertwee, who commented that if she was going to continue like that, perhaps it was a good thing she would not be staying. Which was very unusual as ordinarily Len was one of the most popular Head Girls the school had ever had.

Amongst the Seniors it was a different story. The chatter that had been quashed by Len earlier in the term abruptly resurfaced, and the Prefects, including Con and Margot, along with Ruey from VI B, spent a good deal of time trying to curb the more ridiculous stories.

Privately, Con had her own ideas, but that was no reason to let idle gossip spread around the school. There was something in Len’s mood that told her all she needed to know. She, who had her own prior experience of boys, knew how to recognise the signs. And they were all there in spades. Con had hoped to speak to her sister before bed, to find out exactly how things stood, but alas it was not to be, and she retired to bed before Len had even returned.

However, next morning Con was able to catch her alone before Frühstück next morning. “Len? How was Reg? How did things go yesterday?” There was no undercurrent to her voice, it was too risky around the school. Especially with the gossip flying around as it was.

“I’ll tell you later,” Len replied quietly, desparately trying to hide the grin from her face. “You, Margot and Ruey. Oh, and Ted. While everyone else is packing the school things away, I’ll see if we can nad a spare classroom. You’ll hear everything then!

And with that Len sped off down the corridor, leaving Con to stand staring after her, more questions sitting on the tip of her tongue. There was definitely something going on now, Con was certain of that. There was no other reason for Len to be so whirly, even less so for her to call an elder family meeting.

True to her word, Len did arrange a meeting between them, though by that point all those involved had an inkling as to what was up. “I’ve brought you all here because I need to tell you something, but I need you all to promise that you won’t breathe a word of it to anyone before school is finished.”

Everyone agreed quickly, though Ruey did exclaim, “As if you need to ask!”

Len took a deep breath. “I saw Reg last night. He’s going to be just fine.” She paused rather dramatically. “And we’re now engaged.”

There was a good deal of hugging and congratulating of Len, until that young lady decided that enough was enough, and she would finish what she was saying. “Of course, we won’t be married for a few years yet. I want my degree first, it’s a useful thing to have these days, but then, well, we’ll see what happens.”

It was no more than Con had expected really. She was happy for Len, of course she was, but a twinge of jealously nagged at the back of her mind. For years she had been the most advanced triplet when it came to boys, even if few had known, and now Len had overtaken her. More to the point, without even trying, Len had snagged a man. It was not fair!

There was something else bothering Con. What if Len’s way had indeed be the right way? To stay innocent, and then the right man would just fall in your lap? If that was true, then had Con already messed up her chances by investigating? And would a good, kind man even look at her now? Not matter how hard Con tried to put it out of her mind, it was still there, niggling at the back.

Thank goodness university was coming soon. There no one would know about her past. She would be free of the overshadowing, partly at least, and free to make a fresh start. What could go wrong?

ROFL ROFL at Catherine, but I quite agree.

I must admit that at one point I wondered why Con was so desperate for a man, then I remembered that it did seem important to have a boyfriend and be ahead of friends (and triplet sisters!) at that age.

Just found and read this story, and it's wonderful. It's nice to see Con in the forefront instead of being pushed into the background like she often was in the books.

I'm hoping she's going to find somebody right for her but I've got a sneaky feeling that it's not going to be that easy.

and our Chancellor is the Princess Royal...but she isn't expected to shake 30,000+ students' hands every year (think of the co-ordination between the colleges required for graduation! Part 2 - The University Years

Autumn 1958

Leaning on the side of the veranda, Con gazed out across the garden and beyond. Her home since she was ten years old, and now she was about to leave it all behind. The whole country in fact. Though she was British by birth, and had spent her early years there, she had come to think of Switzerland as home, with its pure mountains and deep valleys. She could not imagine living without such a few. Over the years she had become accustomed to it, but now she was reimersed in its beauty, losing herself in a fairy world.

“Fancy a stroll, Connie?”

Her father’s voice from behind her startled Con, and she inadvertantly jabbed her elbow into the rail before turning around, rather surprised.

Jack Maynard guffawed heartily. “Careful there, you don’t want to get too lost. You’ve finished your packing, haven’t you? Well, in that case, come along. As it’s a fine day, and one of your last.”

He left her no room for argument. Though Con was not averse to going. She had seen little of her father over the past few days, as there had been a difficult case at the San. Tomorrow the three Maynard triplets would depart for their journey across Europe. Con had almost despaired of getting the chance to speak properly with her father before they left, but fortunately, the difficult patient had eased, and Dr. Maynard was finally able to spend some time with his family.

The two of them walked for about fifteen minutes, not really saying much other than the general small talk on the weather and the comings and goings of the Platz. The avoidance of deeper topics was conspicuous to both, yet still they persisted.

Eventually, when they reached a serene glade where there were several large boulders, a good shape for seating, Jack reached out and touched Con on the arm. “Let’s stop here,” he said quietly. “It’s a nice place.”

The two of them paused, looking out across the valley in the land both had grown to love, not saying anything for a few moments. Finally, Jack broke the silence. “It seems like we haven’t really talked much recently. How do you feel about university. Are you looking forward to it?”

Here Con floundered instantly. Caught off-balance, she could only repeat the first words that came into her head. “Yes…. no…. I’m not sure…. sort of a bit of everything!” she stammered nervously.

Her father chuckled, somewhat amused. “Is it that confusing?”

“Well, yes,” Con decided. “I’m looking forward to it, the new experiences and everything, but there’s also something else. I’ll be so far from home, even though Len will be nearby and Margot in Scotland, and it will all be so different from what I’m used to!”

Jack said nothing, but nodded knowingly. It was not far different from his own experience, and he had not gone quite so far away from home as his girls would be doing.

“What was it like for you?” Con added abruptly. “Was it as bad as you expected?”

Shifting uncomfortably on the boulder, Jack tried to put together his thoughts properly before answering. “It was different back then,” he began slowly, not really sure on how to express himself without making her more worried. “I came from a good family, yes, but few were accepting of Catholics. Of couse, there had been all the trouble over Ireland, and we weren’t in particularly high favour as a result.” He sighed, almost blowing Con away. “I won’t say it was easy for me, but I had it better than many. Yet even so…” Suddenly, Jack shook his head, realising who he was speaking to and why. “It won’t be like that fo you,” he soothed gently. “Things have changed a lot since that time.”

“It must have been tough,” replied Con absently.

She had never really considered her father’s time at university before. It was one of those things in the dim and distant past that stayed there. Nor had Con thought much about religious prejudice. She knew it existed, certainly. How could she not after Hitler and his hatred of the Jews. But having been brought up in and around the Chalet School where tolerance was second nature to one and all, it had never seemed quite real to her. Now, faced with the slightly strained look around her father’s eyes, Con began to understand a little and it opened her eyes to the world.

“You’ll find yourself out of the background there,” Jack said abruptly.

This gave Con rather a shock. How could he know? She had always accepted her fate, rebelling only in private. Had Margot mentioned something to him?

As if psychic, Dr. Maynard answered her question. “You forget, Con, that I am a twin. I understand exactly how you are feeling.” He sighed for a second time, and kicked the leaves on the ground. “I only wish I had seen it earlier. In you, I failed to recognise myself.”

“What do you mean, Papa? How could you be like me?”

He chuckled quietly at her outburst. “You’d be surprised, Con.”

Still Con was confused. “But you’re a doctor and Auntie Mollie taught maths before she married. How could you be in her shadow?”

“If it wasn’t for Mollie I would never have become a doctor,” Jack explained. “When we were younger, about the same age as the two Fs actually, I shared Bob’s tutor, and Mollie had a visiting governess who came three mornings a week. On the days when Miss Abdale was not at Pretty Maids, she managed to persuade old Mr. Johns to let her sit in with us. And she completely excelled in the maths classes.” He turned to his daughter. “You have to understand that this was unusual in a girl of our era. Girls weren’t supposed to be interested in things like that, but Mollie broke the mould. And luckily for her, our parents were thrilled by it, and encouraged her every chance they could.

“When it was time for us to depart the home and go to school, our parents sought out one for her that would allow her to study maths and study it well. I was sent to a good school, but I always felt second best to her. Our parents showered attention on their brilliant daughter. I was just left to one side. At that age I was nothing special, they could not show me off as they could Mollie.

“As time went on, I felt more and more neglected. I started to play up at school, cheeking the masters, playing tricks, that kind of thing.” He squirmed a little as he spoke. Jack was not especially proud of that part of his life. “Then, the summer we were fifteen, Mollie took me aside and gave me a good hard talking to. She told me to stop being such a silly ass,” Con stifled a giggle, “and to buck myself up. Much like you and Len did with Margot all those years ago.”

“Is that when you decided to become a doctor?” Con asked, curious. This was a story she had never heard before, odd considering the amount of tales that were passed around the family.

Jack nodded sagely. “Pretty much. Mollie could see what I could not. I was good with people and had a keen interest in biology. She helped me with the stickier maths and I made it to university to study medecine.”

“But I thought you were always good at maths? Mamma always said so!” This was one continuous period of revelation and she struggled to comprehend everything her father was telling her.

He smiled. “Well yes, compared to your mother I am! Yet until Mollie shook me up and took me on, I was barely treading water with it. Your Auntie Mollie has a great gift for making people see through the numbers.”

“Except Mamma.”

“Well, there had to be one failure!” Jack’s eyes shined at the thought of his still-youthful wife. “Mollie did her utmost best with your mother, and believe me, it’s a distinct improvement.”

Now it was Con’s to chuckle. “I do think Mamma hates maths more than me!”

“She certainly does,” Jack agreed. “You do actually have a reasonable grasp of it now though, Con. You’ve done yourself proud!” Con went faintly pink. “Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that until then, I was the shadowy one, the one no-one noticed.” He could not look even his daughter in the eye. “I considered myself worthless, not good enough. And when Mollie set me to rights, I vowed that no child of mine would ever feel like that. And I failed.”

Tears began rolling silently down his face and the breathing became haggard. Quite honestly, Con had no idea what to do. She had never seem him like this before, except perhaps once when he had lost a patient unexpectedly. Tentatively, she reached out and put an arm around him. “Papa, it’s okay. Truly. Yes, I did feel like that, but I always knew you and Mamma loved me. And Len and Margot too. For the most part I came to terms with it a long time ago. I couldn’t do anything else.”

Jack drew his second daughter into a hug. “I could have stopped that. If only I had noticed earlier…”

“It wasn’t your fault,” Con soothed. “It wasn’t anyone’s fault.”

He held her more tightly. “You are unique, Con, remember that. No-one can ever take that away from you. You don’t deserve to be overshadowed by anyone.”

Con smiled knowingly. “I don’t intend to be. Just as you didn’t.” She mused over her last sentence. Did that quite make sense?

They left the glade, arm in arm, to return to Freudesheim, a new understanding between them. For the first time in a while, Con felt that she was not the outsider of the family, but more a part of it than ever before.

Len greeted them at the gate. “Where have you two been! We’ve been looking for you for ages! Con, Mamma wanted to check something for you and Margot wanted to ask you something Papa. She was getting rather frantic! Oh shoot, it’s nearly time for elevenses. Come on, you two!”

She scuttled away quickly, leaving Con and Jack to exchange amused smiles before trailing after her. Nothing had changed here then.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a beta reader?

#197:  Author: JackieJLocation: Kingston upon Hull PostPosted: Tue Jul 20, 2004 9:20 pm

A beta reader is someone who can have a look over something before its published widely. To let you know if something isn't clear and may confuse people. They can sometimes give you good ideas (and save you from posting something which isn't a good as you think it is). They can also act as a final court for spelling and grammar (although most beta readers object to that, and a lot refuse to help unless the stories already been spell-checked!) I do it a little myself, mainly on BtVS fics (I like reading Faith/Xander, although I'm also doing a Xander/Mara Jade from Star Wars one as well *shrugs*)

Hope that helps

Mine neither! In fact, mine isn't really a very sociable person. Hmm... now this scene sounds like wish fulfilment! Smile

I'm sure someone else can give a better explanation, but I define a beta reader as someone who reads one's work before posting/publishing, points out problems, errors and the like, and offers gentle criticism. It's quite useful (especially as I do make mistakes when typing), but they need to be accessible ideally! I had one once before ans she was worse than my Oxford friend for getitng hold of!

So glad to see more of this - that was a really interesting look at Jack's childhood and youth - and I'd certainly never considered the possibilty of him being discriminated against because he was a Catholic, partly, I think, because I sometimes forget exactly how long ago it happened.

#201:  Author: FrancesLocation: Milton Keynes PostPosted: Wed Jul 21, 2004 10:48 am

Thanks LadyG, that was well worth waiting for. The point about discriminating against Catholics was interesting - my uncle would have been a few years younger than Jack, but I've heard him say that his job prospects were severely affected by becoming a Catholic when he married. He was denied promotion for several years simply for that reason, and nothing really changed until around 1960.

Yes, here also there was some fairly virulent anti-Catholic sentiment around that time, at least according to my grandmother. We tend to think of the Kennedy election in 1960 as the landmark turning point.

Neighbor boy: "Are your parents voting for that Catholic?"
Kathy the Ignorant (hadn't yet heard the term Catholic despite Catholic school): "No, they're voting for Kennedy."

It had been a long and tearful goodbye, especially on the part of Con’s mother. Jo Maynard, the first ever Chalet girl, had wept openly for a good half hour as her eldest girls said their goodbyes in anticipation of an extended stay in England and Scotland. She had always hated being separated from her triplets, and now they were growing up it seemed all to likely to happen permenantly.

Con was torn over what she wanted. It was scary to be leaving home for university, even though Len would be there for her when she needed someone. The Platz had been almost her entire life since she was ten years old, she loved it here. It was her home, and it made her feel safe. She knew how things were here. Oxford was the complete unknown. She had visited, yes, but only briefly and not for some time now.

But there was something niggling inside her that wanted a change. She had never been truly away from home or family before, or not for long. Her boarding school had been next door to the family home, and Mamma had never given up on involving herself with the school. Freudesheim might be home, but the school was a close second. Oxford would give her the opportunity to strike out, to make something of her own life for herself.

And so it was with mixed feelings Con had left the Platz. Len was nearly as tearful as her mother, having to say goodbye to her fiancé, Reg, as well as the family. Margot on the other hand was unusually quite, perhaps contemplating on her decision to become a medical missionary.

The three of them were taking the train across Europe, then the boat to England before it was back on the train again to London. There they would separate, with Margot heading up to Edinburgh, and Len and Con to Oxford. It was certainly going to be a long trip, but really it was simply what many of their friends had done twice a term, just to get to school. Con had never quite appreciated how tough it was to travel the continent will a full trunk and various other oddments as well before.

Finally they were on the train that would take them across France to Calais and the three girls settled down for while. It would have been a good idea to sleep, but they were all to excited and instead settled to a variety of pursuits. Con opened her notebook and alternated between that and gazing out the window onto the scenery that was so inspiring. In her younger years she had written mainly poetry, but this time, she felt a story coming on. Margot took out her prospectus to peruse, and Len got out her writing set.

“Writing to Reg already?” teased Margot lightly. “We’ve not been gone long!”

Len missed her jovial tone. “Of course! I don’t want to miss anything when I write to him. It’s going to be really hard as it is.” Then she caught Margot’s cheeky grin. “Oh! Well, it’s true anyway.”

“At least you’ll have Con with you, that’ll be a help! I’ll be all on my own!”

Rather dreamily and only half-paying attention, Con chose to butt in at this point, surprising both her sisters. “You won’t have any problems, Margot. You thrive on independence, and I’m sure we’ll write to you often.”

The conversations continued much in the same manner, with Con only half listening. It was strange, that Len was already engaged. Len, who had no experience of boys really, other than Reg. Roger had been eligible, true, but at the time he had been seeing Con and therefore had seen Len as more of a sister. And she was rather young to be tying herself done, not even nineteen yet! Con had already decided that nineteen was too young for her to get engaged. Len was older than her years really, but she herself was not. And it was not even an issue for Margot. She resolved that no matter what else, at university she would have fun. There were so many things to do, and people to meet. If she got in as deep as Len, it just would not be the same.

*Thoroughly tantalised by the prospects of what Con might do at Uni*

I liked the comment that travelling across Europe had had to be endured by their friends for many years. It really highlights the triplets *sheltered* life.

Con approached the front of St. Anne’s alone, having made arrangements for her trunk to be delivered there as soon as possible; she certainly could not carry it herself. St Anne’s was a fairly new college, having only been established in 1952, and it looked it. In some ways Con would have preferred an older style building, more like the St. Hilda’s Len was attending.

They had separated at the train station, since their colleges were on opposite sides of the city, though it was certainly walkable, especially for people such as themselves who were used to the mountains, and there was always public transport. In fact, it almost would not have been possible to have two colleges further apart. In some ways, this excited Con, for the first time really making her feel independent, yet also made her apprehensive.

Registration was confusing, but somehow Con managed to be given all the right details, and eventually, she received the key to her room. She hauled her bag up the stairs, to find that her trunk had already been delivered, and was inside the open room. Before term started there would be four days of ‘fresher’s week’ at both colleges in order to ease the newcomers into their new surroundings. Or so she supposed.

First thing first, she needed a wash and a drink. Travelling by train was not quite as her mother had described it in earlier years, with soft coal and the like, but it was nonetheless a generally tiring and sweaty business.

Once that was done, Con decided to unpack straight away. The room as it stood was extremely plain. Nicely painted, and with functional furniture, but absolutely nothing else. Con knew she could not live in a room like this for long; she was too used to the jovial atmosphere at home. But once she had made this room her own, Con felt it would be decidedly better.

Part way through, a head popped through her open door. “Hi! I’m Julia Broughton!” it annouced quite rapidly and without fear. “I live down the end of the corridor. What’s your name?”

“Con Maynard,” the owner of it replied shyly.

“Con? Short for Constance I suppose?”Con nodded dumbly. “But it says ‘M. C. Maynard on the door!”

She had forgotton their names were on there, to identify the owner of each one without difficulty. “Well, really it’s Mary Constance, but since my two sisters are also Mary, we’re all known by our middle names.”

Julia plonked herself down on Con’s bed. “You don’t mind do you? No one else seems to be around at the moment, and I really don’t want to be alone just yet.”

“Oh, it’s fine. It’ll be nice to have a little company,” Con agreed, though she did not stop unpacking some of her oddments. The room still looked horribly empty, even with people in it.

“So, two sisters? That must have been fun. Were they older or younger?” Julia sighed. “I was an only child. Or as much as made no matter. I always longed for siblings who weren’t at least fifteen years older.”

“Actually, I have five sisters. And five brothers for that matter.”

Her new friend was visibly stunned. “Wow! Eleven of you? How did your mother manage it?”

“I’m not sure really. I think It helped that she started with us three. We gave her a lot of help as we all grew up.”

“What do you mean you three? Is that the other sisters called Mary?”

Con reached into the trunk and pulled out a photograph. “It is indeed. You see, we’re triplets!”

This almost floored Julia. “Triplets? Wow! That must have been so cool!” she exclaimed.

“It was,” Con agreed. “But now I think I’m looking forward to doing something for me, something on my own.” Why was she opening up to a complete stranger?

Julia gave no answer this, merely nodding in understanding. There was a few moments silence before she spoke again. “‘Con’ is rather short and blunt for a name, don’t you think? How about I call you Connie instead? Much prettier I think!”

Why not? Her father had used it on occasion, but it would still be a fresh name for a fresh start. Rather fitting, to tell the truth.

Hmmm.... didn't mean to leave it this long, but I was trying to decide whether or not to write an extra scene.

Decided not, but Matriculation may get written later. Possibly.

-----

“Wake up, Connie! It’s a bee-yoo-tiful day out there!” came Julia’s excited voice as she rapped heavily on the wooden door that separated Con from the rest of the world.

The door opened sharply and Julia, looking like she had only just crawled out of bed, was faced with a perfectly trim and bright Con Maynard, despite a rather late night. “You forget, Julia, that I’m used to getting up with the dawn; it’s far too late to change now!”

Rather self-consciously, Julia tried to pat down her brown locks into some semblance of tidiness. “Er, yeah, so I see. Well, anyway, fancy a walk down the river? And if Steph and Laurie agree, we could take a picnic basket an stay out most of the day.”

Con’s eyes brightened dramatically. “Oh, I’d love to!” she exclaimed. “I had been planning on visiting Len, but she probably has work or plans, and I can always stop by tomorrow or Monday. Since the weather’s so lovely, it would be a shame to waste it!” Con’s attitude was still greatly influenced by her time at the Chalet School, where lessons would often be postponed when it was deemed appropriate. Today may be Saturday, but it made no difference to Con.

“Your sister’s rather conscientious, isn’t she,” asked Julia cautiously.

“Oh yes; she always has worked hard. I did too, but here it’s not quite the same anymore.” Con saw the other layers in Julia’s remark, but chose to ignore them for the time being.

To tell the truth, Con was already beginning to worry about Len, an unusual turn of events, for it was generally Len who worried about her sisters, as well as everyone else. They were only at the end of the second week of Michaelmas, yet Len, for the first time in her life, seemed to be having trouble fitting in. She had made friends, yes, but they tended to separate themselves from the main body of students, and outside their small group, Len had few friends. Con had found herself in a particular group from the very start. Julia, Laurie and Steph were all in the same block as Con in St. Anne’s and by the end of the first day they were already a firm foursome. And aside from then, Con had acquired a multitude of other friends an acquintances from her college, course and also the student newspaper she had joined. But Len has stayed aloof from frivial student pleasures. She stuck to her select group, all of who also had older fiancé’s waiting for them back home, and certainly did not involve themselves with boys. Len seemed happy enough, but there was something missing.

Julia smiled sympathetically. “You could always invite her along. She’d be quite welcome to come! I know you miss her, Connie.”

That was true, Con did very much miss the constant presence of her sisters. She might be out of their shadow, but they had always been there for her. “Yeah, I think I will. We can stop by on the way to the river. It’s always worth a try.”

It turned out, however, that Len did not really want to go anyway. She had already arranged a tour of some gardens with her friends, and though she tried to persaude Con to go as well, could not let them down now. So Con and her coterie disappeared off down the river for their picnic, admidst promises from Con to spend some time with her sister after church tomorrow.

Ah, knew I meant to do something today.

Apologies for the poor attempt at dialect writing. I suck at it, but I can't do it any ither way!

-----

Con sat by the side of the Cherwell, beautifully cool in her blue cotton frock and matching hat, hair strewn across her shoulders in glorious waves, a faint breeze flying through it. At school it had been customary for her to wear it up somehow, in whatever style she chose. Here, there were no such thoughts. In fact, it was considered rather odd. Hair was worn however you liked, and Con had decided it should be loose today, since it was a little shorter than at school. It was still long, but it was no longer quite as unmanageable.

It really was a gorgeous day. Only small whispy bits of cloud broke up the stunning blue sky, and the sun relected off the waves in the water. A little further a long the river, a group of people were on a punt, kind of like a boat, but one of them was standing on one end, holding a long paddle which was used both to push it and steer it. Con sat up a little to get a better view. Opening her mouth to exclaim, she found herself preempted by Steph, who had not paused to revel in the scenery first.

“Cor’! Look at that punt! Yer wouldn’t get that back ‘ome!” Steph, from an industrial area of Leeds was actually at Oxford on a scholarship, her parents not being well-off at all. She had never had the luxury of holidays or trips on a regular basis, and until she had come to Oxford, had only been to Blackpool.

Laurie took it upon herself to deliver a partial explanation. “Well, it’s really only Oxford and Cambridge that are known for them, so what did you expect! Sounds so much fun, and a bit different too!”

It certainly did look fun. “Do you think we could hire one?” Con asked. “I’ve been boating loads of times and would really love to try my hand at this!” She felt a little shy doing so. She had never been the one who was spectacular at any sports, that always fell to Margot, or occassionally, Len. It was not that she didn’t like sports and water activities, as some had thought, she just wanted to be able to enjoy herself, not having to compete. This would be a wonderful opportunity to do so.

“I believe so,” nodded Laurie. “I’ll look into it on Monday and see where we can go.”

Unexpectedly, Julia threw her arms out behind her and stretched out fully on the grass. “Let’s just hope we get more weather like this! It can’t go on much longer! This is England remember, rain is the staple of our weather!”

Con giggled. England did seem to have rather a reputation for rain. “At least it doesn’t often get as hot as some places! The heat in Switzerland gets unbearable at times. Yes,” she helped herself to a small cake, “this is just perfection!”

Now it was the turn of everyone else to laugh. Having coaxed Julia to sit up again, they shared out the rest of the snacks and lemonade. They had an very enjoyable picnic, laughing and joking as they ate, sharing stories and amusing incidents. The girls seemed particularly taken with Con’s stories of Switzerland and the Tirol, places that seemed exotic to them, helped by the fact that Con had inherited her mother’s gift of storytelling. Con herself was more interested in their stories. Though there had been scholarship girls at the Chalet School, their stories seemed somehow different. Steph was from a working class family, but had worked hard to get herself here. Julia and Laurie were children of professionals, like herself, but just seemed to have had totally different lives!

A little later, as the others were lying drowsily in the shade, Con stood up and went to stand on her own by the side of the river. She made a lonely figure as she gazed at the ripples, contemplating her life up until her arrival in Oxford and since. She certainly had led a very sheltered life, even with her secret rebellion. Oxford had really opened her eyes to how life could be. And it was fun. So many of the things she had seen, and even some of those she had participated in, would have been either derided or scorned at the Chalet School. Or even both! It sometimes seemed her parents thought they were living in the early part of the twentieth century, not the middle. And Len…. somehow Len was the same. Len was already engaged to a friend of the family who was much older than she was, and though Con liked Reg well enough as a person, that decision was preventing Len from living life to the fullest. But she could not interfere. That would only set her sister against her. No, the best thing to do would be just to relax, and be there for her if she was needed.

“Penny for them!” came a voice from behind, and Con nearly jumped out of her skin.

“You scared me, Julia!” Con exclaimed. “I thought you were all sleeping!”

Julia shrugged non-commitedly. “Nah, it was getting a little chilly over there so I thought I’d join you in the sun. Are you okay, Connie?” she added, slightly concerned.

Con nodded, a faint smile on her face. “I’m fine.” She paused, unsure what to say. “I was just thinking about how sheltered I’ve was until I came here. I never knew half the stuff you three talk about!”

“You’d be surprised!” Julia assured her. “Just think of the places you’ve seen, and the things you’ve done! You’ve more world experience than all of us put together!”

“I have seen and done things, true, and loved it, but, oh I don’t know. I seem to have missed a lot.”

“Nah, you’re doing fine! You’ve come with an open mind, and that’s better than any modern upbringing!” decided Julia firmly. “Even if I do think you’re wrong anyway.”

Sighing, Con said simply, “I suppose I am doing okay. But I’m not so sure Len is.”

Whatever words of comfort Julia had intended to offer her, Con never got the chance to hear, for at that very moment, there was a loud yell of, “Look out!” and Con turned around, only to see a young man fly down the hill following a runaway football, collide with her, and send her tumbling headfirst into the river.

-----

The weather may have been hot, but the river was certainly very cold. The icy shock as she hit the water startled Con greatly, and instead of calmly resurfacing, she thrashed around a little before emerging. It was not especially deep where she fell, but it was quite deep enough to cover her from head to foot.

Con reached the bank a little ahead of student who had flung her into the lake, he having stopped to pick up his ball. Julia reached down an arm to help pull her out, but Con shook her head, preferring to wriggle up herself. The dress was already soaked, a little more mud would not hurt.

“I say, are you alright,” the young man queried apologetically. “I’m ever so sorry; once I started down that hill I just couldn’t stop!”

Intending on delivering a scathing rebuke, Con glanced at his face and instantly softened. The regret was there, written all over his it. He really was sorry, and he looked kind of cute like that, all bedraggled. That brought her attention back to her own state, which surely could not be any better. “It’s okay, really. But, oh!” Stupidly, she looked down. The blue cotton frock really was soaked through, and clung to her figure like a catsuit. And to top it off, it was streaked with brown and green. She could not see she her hair, but could feel it was no better. Perhaps that was a good thing it was out of sight, for as Julia pointed out later, it was full of sticks and leaves. And her hat was gaily floating off downstream somewhere. Shame, as she had grown quite attached to it.

“I really am sorry,” he enthused again. “It was a complete accident, but I feel terrible. Look, my sister lives round the corner. I think she has some clothes that might fit you. That is… if your own place is too far away? You’ll catch your death if you go around like that!”

Involuntarily, Con smiled. That was exactly the sort of thing she had been told her entire life. Her family and school had been constantly in the shadow of TB and it was quite reassuring to hear it echoed elsewhere, in a rather odd way. It was rather comforting to be reminded of home as well. “I’ll come, but on two conditions.”

“Name them.” His eyes took on a curious glint.

“Firstly, I’m not going alone. I’d like Julia to be there as well.”

He agreed instantly. “No problem. What’s the second?”

“I’d like to know you name.” Con flashed him one of her prettiest smiles.

The young man went off into peals of laughter. “But of course!” He held out a hand. “David Storn.”

Con took her hand willingly. Good firm grip, pleasant manner. This could even be fun! “Connie Maynard,” she said shyly.

She chatted with him all the way to the house, leaving Julia talk football with one of his friends. Julia had discovered his friend was also a Chelsea supporter, and they nattered away on the championship winning season a couple of years previously. Con had little interest in football, having grown up in Switzerland, and David was quite happy to turn the conversation to other topics.

It turned out David was also a first year, studying mathematics at Trinity, though his married sister also lived in the city. When she discovered that fact, Con immediately drew her face into a grimace, which only made him laugh. She despised maths in any shape or form and had been eminently grateful when she could drop it. David felt a similar way about English.

Despite their immediate differences, the pair of them got along swimmingly. She regaled him with stories of living in Canada and Switzerland, much to his fascination as he had always wanted to travel, and he shared stories of schoolboy pranks and holiday adventures. In a way, Con was sad when they reached the house and she disappeared off to make herself presentable. Even with the rather unorthodox soaking and the loss of her hat, it had been fun.

I love the way she introduced herself as 'Connie' Maynard! Sounds like another interesting meeting for 'Connie' Wink

I also hadn't really thought of the adventurous lives the Maynards had lived. We tend to think of them now (in retrospect) as living sheltered lives but in the '60s to have lived in Switzerland and Canada was incredibly sophisticated and exciting.

Another great post in a superb drabble! Thank you.

More now! Work kind of got in the way Smile

The reason I chose Trinity is that I've only really been inside two colleges and Trinity is one of them! (Wadham is the other) But TRinity worked better for this purpose.

So were you in the one next door? I have a friend at Trinity who used to steal stuff from you guys all the time Smile

-----

Standing in front of the full length mirror in the spare bedroom of David’s sister, Con gazed curiously at her own reflection. It certainly was different from her usual style. Nothing special, just a pair of rather more figure hugging jeans than she was used to, and a fashionable top, but it really made her look older and more sophisticated. The heels too.

Part of it might be the hair as well. Con had washed it in the sink, and while it dried, she had no choice but to put it up with a clip borrowed hastily from Julia. Thankfully she had had it cut since coming to Oxford. Not a lot, it was still down past her shoulders, but significantly shorter than she had previously worn it. If it had still been that long she would not have been able to do anything at all with it.

There was a brisk knock on the door, and Con jumped. “Hello?”

“It’s only me,” replied Julia. “David sent me up to make sure you had everything you needed.”

“I was just coming,” Con smiled. She turned to pick up her pile of still wet clothes and shoes, but before she had moved more than an inch, her friend had intervened.

“He also told me to make sure you left them on the chair, and that he’ll return them to you when they’ve been cleaned.”

Con was pleasantly surprised. “Oh!” she exclaimed. “But I don’t mind! After all, I’m borrowing these.” She gestured down at the new outfit.

Shrugging, Julia simply said, “Take it up with him, not me.”

Con followed her down the stairs into the living room. It was not very large, for house prices were high in Oxford, but it was stylish and comfortable. Over in one corner David was trying to stop his nephew from crying and was dismally failing. Feeling strangely confident, Con walked over and offered her assistance. “Here, let me try.”

By the time David’s sister returned from the kitchen with a tray of tea, the boy had quietened immensely and was happily cooing in Con’s lap. “You are good with children,” the baby’s mother enthused. “Do you have younger siblings?”

“Oh yes, there are eleven of us back home.”

“Eleven??”

Smiling, Con continued. People were always shocked when they heard the full story. “Eleven. Geoff and Phil are the youngest…. they’re just six. And then we have a few wards as well. Most of them are about our age and a little younger, but Claire, she’s only three years old. I’ve had plenty of time around babies!”

“Are you the eldest?”

This was continuing just as usual. “Well, yes and no. That honour goes to my sister Len, but we’ve always been together so I am sort of.”

“Oh, you’re a twin?”

Perfect. Con really did enjoy watching people’s faces when she told them. She had never been particularly mischievous, but this had always been fun, even when they were little girls. “A triplet actually.”

David spluttered his tea back into the cup. “Triplets? Not really?”

“Absolutely. Len is here at Oxford as well, but Margot is up in Edinburgh doing a medical degree.”

Even after the amusing turn the conversation had taken, Con did not want to stay too long. After the tea and biscuits, she and Julia made their excuses in order to return to Steph and Laurie, who had stayed by the riverside. Con was really quite loathe to do so, but as it was she felt she was impinging on their hospitality.

I like David's "not really!" - very Chalet. Great that after so much time she still enjoys the reaction! Always a bonus when I log on and see this has been updated - Con is one of my favourites and I love the way her character has been developed.

I loved that. It seems so natural to enjoy shocking people in an innocent way - and 11 children including being a triplet sounds like a sure jaw dropper.

I liked the comments about the clothes - "Nothing special, just a pair of rather more figure hugging jeans than she was used to, and a fashionable top, but it really made her look older and more sophisticated. The heels too. "

Love Con spreading her wings!

An updte to catch up on - hurrah.
I like Con's borrowed outfit - and the fact she likes her image. I wonder if she will go on a shopping trip anytime soon? Somehow though, I can imagine Len trying to dissuade her.
And of course, she will have to meet David again when he returns her wet clothes, which is smething else to look forward to.

For those of you that haven't gone to the gathering (that is why it's so quiet, right?) here's a little more. Everyone else gets to wait Wink

-----

As Con struggled with the pins keeping her hair up, there was a sharp rap on the door. Hurriedly shoving the last few in, leaving a fair few strands dangling round her face, she made her way to the door. Thankfully she was fully clothed and organised other than her hair, for behind the door stood David, a pile of clean clothes in his hand.

“I thought you might like these back,” he said, rather redundantly. “They've been washed and ironed.”

She took them from his outstretched hands and thanked him. “I have your sister's outfit around here somewhere,” she added, somewhat sheepishly. "I meant to return it before. Hang on a moment.”

Con disappeared back into the room, forgetting in her fluster to invite David in. She dropped her own clothes onto the bed, as she sorted through her pile of clean, ironed washing to retrieve those of David's sister.

“Thanks. Though I'm not sure she actually fits into them any more. She's started suffering from the middle aged spread. You could probably keep them.”

“Oh, she's hardly middle aged!” Con exclaimed, rather shocked that he would say something like that about his sister. “It's just because she's had a baby and has to support the both of them.”

David did not really know what to say to that. “Er, yeah. I suppose.”

This killed the conversation before it ever even got off the ground. David said a brief goodbye and turned to go, leaving a rather dejected Con mentally kicking herself for not realising earlier that he was only joking.

He stopped abruptly a few steps down the corridor and turned back to meet her, unmoved since his exit. “Would you like to go to lunch sometime?” he asked quickly, evidently before his nerve failed him.

Con felt a surge of excitement welling up inside of her. “I'd love to,” she responded shyly. Then a thought struck her. “Oh, shoot! I'm supposed to be meeting Len this lunch time. I can't cancel her this late!”

“How about tomorrow then?”

Swiftly, Con went through everyone she knew, just in case she was supposed to be meeting someone else. Nothing. Seemed clear at least. “That would be great. Do you have somewhere in mind?”

“How about the Juniper Cafe? Do you know it?”

“I think so.” Of course she knew it! It was only considered one of the most romantic places to go on a date.

He seemed rather more nervous now. “I'll see you there then. 12:30 okay?”

Once he was gone, Con did a beautiful little jig and then collpsed onto her bed in fits of giggles, crushing the newly returned clothes. A real date! Life was fantastic!

Well I did mean to post before - but I just rewrote this part, so I got a bit delayed. I do have a few more prepared after this one. I could have done with a little more time on this one, but ah well.

-----

Connie held up her skirts as she tiptoed down the corridor. Having picked her way through the creaky stairs successfully already, she believed that the corridor would be far easier. She had taken her shoes off at the entrance, and now carried one in each hand.

Only a few more paces to go and she would be at her room, where she could barricade herslef in and wallow in the superb time she had just been privy to. Nearly there….

A head popped out of Julia’s room. “’Here! We’ve been expecting yer, Connie!” Steph’s eyes glinted with anticipation. “And we wanna ‘ear ev’ry single detail!” She grabbed Con’s arm and pulled her inside, shoes and all, leaving her standing just inside the doorway, looking rather strange, with three interested face gazing up at her.

Normally it was Laurie’s room they camped out in, by dint of it being marginally larger than any of the others, but evidently they had made the switch for today as Julia’s was the only one on the same floor as Con’s. And no matter how quiet she had been, chances are they would have spotted her anyway.

“So…. spill,” said Julia, pulling Connie down on to the edge of the bed, almost the throne of honour with the space available. “How did it go?”

Con shrugged. “Okay,” she replied laconically.

“And???” The suspense was obviously Steph who was practically jumping up and down in the wooden chair as though she were on a spring. “Yer can’t just leave it like tha’!”

Smiling, Con said nothing.

Julia put on her best reproachful look. “Come now, Connie, that’s not telling us much! What was the food like? And more importantly, what was he like? Did he treat you well; was he a gentleman? We need to know these things!” As with Steph, the excitement was bubbing over in her voice.

This time, Connie decided to take the high ground. “I don’t have to tell you anything! I think it should be a private matter between David and myself!”

Dismissing her with a wave of a hand, Steph practically jumped in on the end of Con’s sentance. “Oh yer don’t really think like tha’! We know yer too well for that, missy!” She waggled a beautifully clean finger in Con’s face.

“I agree wholeheartedly!” Julia chimed in. “This here could not possibly the be Connie who spent hours worrying about how it would be and had to be reassured by all three of us before she would go!”

Desparately trying not to blush at their teasing, Connie simply sat tall and mute, knowing that if she opened her mouth she could not possibly withstand their persistence. Of course, Con knew that in the end she would tell them, but dragging it out was quite simply more fun.

“Come on!” begged Steph. “Yer can’t keep us on tenterhooks all this time! It just ain’t fair!”

“Yeah, you know we’d tell you if it were us!” Julia joined in again, not wanting to be left out.

Still Connie stayed aloof. “If you’re like this now, you’ll be mad vultures by the next one!”

Laurie was, as usual, the first to spot the only half-deliberate detail in Con’s sentence. “So there will be a next time then? That sounds promising!”

Connie’s carefully crafted veneer began to wobble. “Erm… well… yes.” She didn’t like to carry on too much after that, and she reached behind her neck and rubbed it, skillfully avoiding all glances. The information would start flowing very soon it seemed, and Con had not the heart to stop herself.

“So? Pray do tell!” Julia insisted immediately.

Con wondered where to begin really. There was so much she wanted to talk about. “Weeeell,” she began slowly, “We…er… we met at the Juniper and he bought me lunch. Not much else to it!”

“Yeah right!” Steph interjected. “Now spill properly!”

And spill she did. “He was already outside when I got there, which was good as I didn’t want to wait there on my own for him. We got one of the best tables in there, with the most gorgeous view!” As an afterthought, she added, “Apparently his sister knows the manager or something. We ate, nothing special and just talked. It was very enjoyable and….” Con trailed off, still grinning.

The girls did not take to kindly to her abrupt pause. As they threatened her with the tickling again, Connie deigned to continue, trying not to giggle too much. “He reached out and took my hand.” Even just thinking about him made her all tingly inside. Had it been like that with Roger? Con was not sure she could even remember that far back.

“And??” The suspense was killing Julia.

“And then we took a stroll and he kissed me under the pines.” Somehow, the words came out in such a matter of fact way it sounded as though she barely cared. But she most certainly did. The scent of the pines, the autumn sunshine, the atmospere between them: it was all perfect. And he was so wonderful.

A series of whoops echoed around the room. “So when’re yer seein’ him again?”

“Tonight. He’s taking me to the pictures.”

She found herself underneath three other bodies as they all lept to hug her at the same time. They knew her well enough, and they had seen her before the date. It was blatantly obvious to all that Con liked this young man a great deal and that meant they were happy for her.

A little early for this part, as otherwise it wouldn't be until the weekend!

------

Connie paced around the outside of St. Hilda’s and glanced at her watch. Len was late. Where was she? Con had already been waiting for fifteen minutes and was starting to get rather worried. It just was not like her in the least; she was usually so prompt!

Wringing her hands, Con started on another round trip of the small patch of grass. What if Len already knew? Could she possible be avoiding her? Connie shook her head, sending waves flying. That was an absolutely ridiculous idea. Len might have some rather set ideas, but she would never be so judgemental as to ignore her own sister.

Yet still Con was inherently relieved when she finally saw Len come flying down the pavement and towards her, embracing her in a fierce hug when she saw her. “I am SO sorry! I just got totally caught up in a piece of translation at the library, and then I ran into Pam,” Pamela was on of Len’s little coterie, nice in some ways, but still rubbing Con totally up the wrong way, “And she had a few things to tell me. Anyway,” Len took her younger sister’s arm in hers, “we’d best make haste I suppose. Again, I really apologise!”

The two Maynards headed off for a walk around the grounds, which were looking the season as it was over half way through Michaelmas. Dead leaves crunched under their feet and Connie drew her scarf closer when a brisk wind floated by.

Though they met up on a very regular basis, the sisters rarely saw each other socially. Both had tried to involve the other in their own pursuits, but there was a distance between them that neither had seen before. Len considered Con’s friends to spend too much time playing and not enough working, while the exact opposite was true of Con and Len’s associates. Hence the fact that the ulf between them had grown to the point it almost felt like mere custom.

Today, however, was slightly different. Connie had something to tell her sister, something she had already confided in to Margot, and now needed to tackle their eldest. It should not be that difficult, but Con was having trouble finding the words to tell her.

Finally, she decided to take the plunge. “Len, there’s something I need to speak to you about.”

“If it’s about that letter from Mamma, I’m nearly done with it. I can drop it by tomorrow if you like.”

“No, it’s not that.” For someone as perceptive about feelings as Len was supposed to be, she was really being remarkably dense. “It’s rather more important than that, and I’d rather you heard it from me rather than anyone else.

This time Len stopped, literally and took notice. She turned to look her sibling in the eye. “Oh?” she said cautiously. “Is it bad?”

“Nothing bad,” Con assured her, “It’s just…” she faltered slightly before regaining her resolve. “I’m seeing somebody.”

Immediately Len’s eyes flashed down to Con’s hands, which were bare, despite the cold. “Well, that’s good, I suppose,” she offered slowly.

Connie had caught the glance and tried to keep her anger in check. “We’re not like you and Reg, Len. We’re just going to take it slowly and see how things go. I don’t want to rush in to anything.”

“I see,” conceeded Len. “I didn’t mean to be rude. Will you forgive me? It’s just it would be nice to see settled you with someone already.”

Already? Len didn’t know the half of it. And they were only just nineteen anyway. But Con knew better than to challenge Len on that assumption, and she simply accepted the apology at face value. After all, Len hadn’t really meant anything untoward by it. “Of course I will,” she smiled. “As long as you understand we don’t have any long term plans at the moment.”

The elder Maynard acquiesced to that proposal, though Con could see she was still apprehensive. Carefully she steered the topics of conversation back to the comings and goings of people back home, with a long spiel on what Mamma had said about the Middles’ latest. “They don’t change, the Middles, do they?”

“Definitely not!” But in some ways Middles did change. Connie had never been a typical Middle, yet still she had progressed as any of them would. The age might not change much, but everyone grew up at some point, some quicker than others. She flicked a glance at Len, smiling brightly, but still hanging on to her old life, showing no signs of letting go. Even if she had wanted to move on, there was Reg chaining her to the Platz. Con did not want that for her sister, but Len had aged before her years and in a different era; she could not change that now.

The four friends sat around in the lounge area of Laurie’s room, each partaking in a different activity. Julia was furiously scribbling at a last minute essay. Steph, writing a letter, rather more serenely. Connie had taken to embroidering a new cushion cover for her mother and Laurie herself was curled up with a book.

Tapping her pen on the edge of her file, Julia glanced around the room, finally setting on the title of Laurie’s book, ‘Nancy Meets a Nazi’. “Aren’t you a little old to be reading that?” she teased lightly.

Laurie shrugged nonchalantly. “It’s actually remarkably accurate. It is based on a true story, after all.”

“More exciting tha’ most!” agreed Steph. “I used ter love tha’ one!”

Still stitching, Con idly responded to the comments. “Exciting, yes, but terrifying to live though. By all accounts Mamma had nightmares for months until she got it out of her system by writing it.”

It was only after she finished speaking that Con realised exactly what she had said. A kind of stunned silence fell across the room and Connie wished that the earth would just swallow her up.

Finally Julia spoke up. “Do you mean to say your mother is Josephine M. Bettany?” she asked incredulously.

“Er…. yes,” Con replied, not looking at any of them and becoming suddenly interested in the dust on the floor.

“But that’s fantastic!” Julia decided. “How did you manage to keep it from us for so long?”

As Laurie had done earlier, Con simply shrugged. “It never seemed important. And it was nice not to be though of as ‘Joey Bettany’s daughter’.”

Julia’s face softened in empathy. “Geesh you really must have had a lot to live up to, what with being her daughter and a triplet to boot!”

“You said it.” For the first time since the conversation began, Connie smiled. “She was the first Chalet Girl as well.” There were groans all round. All three had heard an awful lot about the Chalet School and it’s ethos.

“You know we love you for who you are, don’t you, Connie?” Laurie eyed Connie cautiously. Con only smiled, a little embarassed at the attention. “But would you mind if I asked her about her experiences in Austria? It would look amazing if I could ger some first hand experiences for my next essay.”

They all collapsed into fits of giggles. Con was totally surprised at their matter-of-fact reactions, and was rather pleased as well. It was the first time no one had said, “So that’s where you get your gifts from.”

Love that - love Connie not mentioning it before. That her friends not only accepted it but sympathised immediately with how it reflected on her. Loved their response to the Chalet School - sounds as though someone has been rubbing it in about the school - if Con's not mentioned it I suppose Len has??

Thanks Lady G. Kiss

Though it was still early evening, dusk reigned across there gardens where Connie and David strolled hand in hand. the sky grew darker as they trudged through the snow, their way clouded by the persistent snowflakes that flew through the air.

Con herself was ecstatic at the change in the weather. In the first few weeks of Michaelmas there had been some rather lovely days, including the day she had met David, but since then it had become damp and cool. Until now. She revelled in the crunch of the snow and the brisk wind, feeling almost as though she was back in the Swiss mountains.

Beside her, David was visibly shivering. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Of course!” Con enthused. “It makes a rather delightful change from the rain. And it is exceedingly pretty.”

He did not seem particularly convinced. “I guess so, but it’s just so cold! I don’t know how you managed in Switzerland.”

Connie’s eyes began to glint. “Oh, we had one sure way of keeping warm.”

David fell into her trap without the least hesitation. “Yeah? What was that?”

“This!” At her playful best for once, Con reached down into a drift and grabbed a handful of pure white snow. Catching her boyfriend off-guard, she tipped it down the back of his coat, before skipping away to avoid any swift revenge.

“Oh you little horror!” he exclaimed. “I’ll get you back for that, young missy!” With those words, David picked up a handful of his own and flung it haphazardly in her direction.

Unfortunately for him, Con was far to experienced in snow fights and ducked away easily. “If you can!” she taunted.

A veritable snow war erupted between them after that, with snowballs flying left, right and centre. After a good half hour of near-constant conflict, David finally cornered Connie around a tree. With bushed around her, and no source of usable snow, Con was trapped.

“You’re mine now, Connie!”

Con flitted from side to side of the trunk, looking for an escape route. “Are you sure of that?”

Without warning, Connie made a dart for safety, but David was quick enough and grabbed her by the arm as she sped past. The result was she spun around, only to find a dollop of wet snow melting down her back.

Her shrieks and yells attracted the attention fo another pair, who were making their way across the gardens of St. Anne’s. They turned and made a bee-line for the couple. Both Con and David recognised them instantly.

“Okay, here’s the plan,” whispered David out the side of his mouth, still smiling and waving at the approaching Steph and Laurie. “We take them on as a team. They’ll never know what hit them.”

“I had the same idea,” Connie agreed. “On my mark then…. three… two… one… MARK!”

They launched into action, but Steph and Laurie had evidently anticipated such a ploy, as the two of them reached out before the first snowball had even been thrown. Within moments the whole thing had degenerated into a wild frenzy, larger than the last, and their soft missiles flew in every direction.

It was some time before the ruckus came to a civilised end. It had looked for a while like they would run out of snow, but a fresh flurry had alleviated that fear and provided them with plenty of new ammunition.

“Oof! I can see what you mean about keeping warm now, Connie,” smiled David, pulling a soggy Laurie to her feet. “I’m baked!”

Con chuckled as she looped her arm in his. “It won’t last long though, now we’ve stopped moving. No,” she said firmly, “There was only one thing we did after a snow fight…”

Twenty minutes later saw them all in fresh dry clothes, snug and warm, each with a steaming mug of hot cocoa. In the bacground were the strains of a rather battered radio Laurie had found in a junk shop. Connie and David had snuggled together on the beanbag, since Steph and Laurie had laid claim to the sofa immediately upon returning.

It was nice, being able to sit in David’s arm, with no worries that someone would disapprove. Never before had that been posisble, and that made it all the more enjoyable.

Reminds me of a day in Cambridge in January when we had a real blizzard. It looked pretty, but wimpy English people don't seem to able to cope with snow, and so the pavements weren't cleared and turned into ice-rinks, and the the schools were closed... and all that for an inch of snow! Rolling Eyes Sorry to break up the romantic mood and bring everyone back to earth with a bang! Wink
I do like Connie and her friends, though, so much more fun than Len and her bunch! And a snow fight sounds heavenly just now,it's hot and muggy over here in Germany Sad

“Your go, Connie,” said David as he placed the letters on the board with a flourish, immensely proud of the word he had just produced.

Con leant back on her hels and took a good hard look at the board. There was not an awful lot of space left, and most of the pieces had gone too. However, there was still a triple word scrore if only she could work out how to use it. Perhaps she could. The vocabulary cogs moved into overtime inside her mind as she ran through every single word she knew.

Suddenly Connie had the answer. As she placed the figures in the boxes, David’s smile of triumph and Con edged further into the lead with a loud whoop.

Having no choice but to give in graciously, David shrugged it off. “Oh well. You do English, I do maths. It was bound to happen. Now… how about your prize?” He leaned forward over the Scrabble board and pressed his lips against hers. Within moments they were locked in a passionate embrace.

For once, the pair of them were totally and utterly alone. They had taken the opportunity to use David’s for a change, as the person he shared the living area with had disappeared off somewhere for the weekend. This was the first time they had had somewhere totally to themselves since they had got together, and that had been a while ago.

Connie preferred David’s rooms to her own. Trinity was far, far older than St. Annes, and as a result, much of the accomodation was also. He had walls of panelled wood, compared to Con’s of painted plaster, and the wood was much more pleasing to Con’s artistic eye. And then there was the history if the place: so many generations of students living between these same four walls. But at this particular point in time, she was oblivious to all her surroundings. She was more interested in a certain someone opposite her.

Accidentally, David knelt in an errant Scrabble piece and winced, breaking the contact. Idly he glanced at the clock. “Goodness!” he exclaimed when he eyes finally focused properly. “It’s getting late. I suppose I should walk you home soon.” He sounded bitterly disappointed that time had flown so fast.

Having brushed aside the board game, Connie moved back into David’s arms. “It seems such a shame to end the evening so soon.” Con almost could not believe her own ears. The words just flew out without conscious thought.

He drew her closer to him. “I agree, but it is almost dark. It would be dangerous to leave it too much later.”

Connie turned her big brown eyes to look deeply into his. “Why do I have to go at all?”

If he was surprised by her question he let none of it show. But Connie did not go home that night, nor the next.

-----

When Con stepped out onto the Görnetz Platz after a long journey home with her sisters, everything had changed, yet everything was still the same. As they passed to school she had spent so many years at, Con watched the girls in their gentian blue outfits playing a fast game of hockey. The mistress in charge of the practice, Miss Burnett by all appearences, spotted the triplets and waved. Margot showed signs of wanting to go and have a chat with her, but Len reminded her it was still schooltime and not really appropriate.

“Oh my darling tripets!” Joey Maynard flung herself at Margot, who happened to be nearest, and then at each of the other two. “You must all be so tired after the journey! Go freshen up, and I’ll get Anna to bring some of her delectable coffee and cream cakes.”

Joey was true to her word and within fifteen minutes, the elder Maynards were sitting with their mother in the Saal. “How was the journey?” she asked politely, though Con was near-certain that Mamma really wanted to ask them all about their lives at university and was showing unsual restraint for her.

“Oh so-so,” Len responded amiably. “We had a few hold-ups coming through France, but everything worked out in the end. We’re here now, safe and well, that’s the main thing. How’s the family doing?”

“You know, the usual.” Joey accompanied the remark with a flick of her hand. “The boys return from school next week, so you can see them then. Claire’s grown so much since you’ve been away, I’m not sure you’ll recognise her anymore! And the other tinies aren’t much better! Flixy and Cecil are having a special trip home this weekend, even though it’s so close to the end of term. They’ve all missed you three a lot!”

“Sounds great!” Margot decided. “Will Papa be around as well?”

Joey nodded emphatically. “He’s taken time off especially. He’s just nipped out for a bit with Roger. They’ll be back soon.”

Roger. For no apparent reason, Connie’s stomach lurched at the sound of his name. She had forgotton he would be coming her for Christmas this year. Though much water had passed under the bridge since they had been together and they were still friends, quite simply Con had not been expecting to see him this holiday. A quick glance at Margot indicated that she was not the only one who had forgotton. Margot tried to smile comfortingly, but failed to instill any kind of confidence on Connie.

As if they knew they were being discussed, Jack and Roger chose that moment to make their illustrious entrance. Con gave Roger a sisterly hug, despite her reservations, and then moved to greet her father.

“Yes,” he said simply, looking at her from arm’s length, “you’re looking very well, Connie.” Jack drew Con into an embrace. “Oxford evidently suits you.” Connie could only smile at that comment.

Reunion chatter seemed to continue for ages before Joey suggested that they could hop on over to the school and visit a few people there. Con was glad of the change for a while; she needed to gather her thoughts before she spoke to Roger, and in fact to make a decision to say anything in particular at all.

If you go back a bit, you'll notice he called her 'Connie' before she went to Oxford as well.

As for the transition, it's an ongoing process. Slowly.

------

Connie was unable to get Roger alone that evening, nor anytime the next day. Had it been back during the that wild time when they’d been together, she would simply have instigates a midnight meeting, but that era was long gone. Now Con wanted to do things properly.

She finally found him alone, sitting on the window seat in the large Saal, gazing out at the snow drifts. Margot and Len were helping the tinies to bed, along with Joey and the inevitable Rosli. Con would have joined them, but since there were only four youngsters who needed any help, it was a case of too many cooks. There would be plenty of time to participate over the holidays.

“Still something, huh?” She said quietly, indicating the growing blizzard outside. “England has nothing on this.”

Startled, he turned around and budged up to leave a smidgen of space on the edge of the seat. “Yeah, not even close.” Roger, being in his third year at Cambridge where he studied engineering, knew exactly what she meant. Even the large (for England) snowstorm at the beginning of December had failed to live up to Swiss standards.

Connie plonked herself down. “How are you, Roger? We hevn’t really had the chance to have a proper conversation yet.” She smiled, knowing that even after only a couple of months of university she was already ten times more confident as she had been before.

“I’m good, yes, good.” He looked back out the window, conscious of her platonic gaze on his face. “Actually, Con, there’s something I wanted to tell you.”

“Hmm?” Though she tried to make her voice sound politely interested, such a simple comment had aroused in her intense curiosity, much as it would with her mother.

He twiddled his fingers, still not looking his former girlfriend in the eye. “I wanted you to be the first to know; I’ve met someone. And we’re engaged.”

Rather unexpectedly, Connie felt absolutely nothing at all. She had expected something to happen. But there was nothing. Everything felt the same as she had before. “That’s wonderful news!” she enthused without a hint of holding back.

Roger seemed astounded by her pleased reaction. “Really? You’re okay with it?”

“Why wouldn’t I be? As it happens, I’m seeing someone myself, though we have no plans to get engaged just yet.” This was going much better than she had expected. What an easy opening!

It wasn’t to last. “You’re seeing somone? But you’ve only been there a few months!”

Con shrugged. “We got together before we’d known each other a month and Len was engaged before she even left school.”

“Both those times were different.”

Now Connie was confused. Roger was engaged, but he was exhibiting some worryingly jealous behaviour. “It’s been a long time since we were together, Roger. We’ve moved on since then… or at least I thought we had.” She looked quizzically at Roger.

“Well of course we have! But that doesn’t mean you should go out and fall for the first guy you meet!”

“Oh he was hardly the…” Con trailed off mid-sentence.

For the first time since Con had joined him, Roger drew himself to his full height and squared up to her. “He was hardly the what?”

Withough hestiation, she finished, “He was hardly the first man I met.” That was true, and Connie could say it without faltering, but that had not been what she intended to say. If she had finished it first time around, she would have said, “He was hardly the first man I fell for.” There was no need for Roger to know of her previous fancy for the unattainable Dr. Hamilton.

“That doesn’t make it right.”

It took a lot to make Con angry, but she was certainly well on the way to it. “How dare you presume to tell me who I should or should not be seeing?” With those words she leapt off her seat, standing with fists clenched in frustration.

“I’m concerned for you, that’s all.”

“Oh rubbish. Come and talk to me when you find some sense.” With that Connie stalked out the room, needing the privacy of her own small bedroom. What right did he have to say those things? None at all. She was eighteen…. nineteen in fact… and while she was not an adult in the eyes of her parents, she was more free to make her choices than women of ages past. By her age, her cousin Josette had been married! And no one had questioned her right to make that decision. If she came to that, Roger had no hold over her anyway.

A small seed of doubt settled itself into one corner of her brain and was quickle swept away again. He was simply jealous, that was all. even though he had got engaged to someone else. Though Con had felt nothing before, she was now even more certain of her lack of feelings for Roger.

The next time she saw him, which was later that evening, Connie was civil to him, nothing more. Everytime she spoke to him he looked at her with hurt in his eyes. Con stood proud, never condescending to make the first real move. Len seemed to suspect that something was up, but figured it was just a sibling spat. Margot was so engrossed in adiscussion of biology with her father that she failed to notice, as did her mother. But then, Joey had never realised anything else that went on under her roof, why should this time be any different?

Two days later, Roger broke and came to offer his apologies. “I was wrong, I’m sorry. I just…. I hadn’t expected you to be with someone and it totally threw me out of synch. It was abhorrent behaviour and I truly apologise for that. *Of course* you have the right to make your own decisions.”

Con accepted his apology graciously, mindful that in the future she should be cautious of any further outbursts like this, not only from Roger but from others as well.

That was a great installment, LadyG! It's good to see how Connie is developing in maturity; Roger's behaviour shows up in stark contrast. I like the way his attitude conveys something of the attitude of the time, but also it's quite realistic as I think first loves can make you behave oddly, even years later!

After this, no more until after the bank holiday Razz

-----

A long pole thunked onto the bottom of the riverbed, and pushed the punt along with its gentle steering. David pulled it up, hand over hand, and then plunged it in again with an elegant ease. The water lapped at the wooden sides as they drifted along the Cherwell.

Connie sat, attentive, crosslegged on one of the benches in the centre of the punt. It was just the two of them today, as it should be on Valentine’s day. It was chilly out, though not raining as it had the day before. In fact, there were faint gleams of late Winter sunshine creeping through the clouds above.

“When’s it my turn to punt?” she implored, gazing up into his eyes.

He smiled at her, but his attention was primarily held by the wish not to send the punt and all its contents into the overgrown trees and bushes that edged the banks. “I told you at the start, this is MY evening and I intend to do things properly! So therefore *I* will do the punting, and then I will take you out to dinner, as I should do.”

David said the words so solemnly that Con giggled in spite of herself. Though he was a gentleman for the most part, he rarely seemed concerned about the proper way to do things. If he were, they would quite possibly be not together, or at least not in the same way. Connie and David would have had to be more like Len and Reg to do things ‘properly,’ and that would suit neither.

As if by some triplet connection, Con spotted Len walking along the river bank with a friend at just that moment. Con raised her hand in a wave, and was met by a very enthusiastic one in return. David made a polite attempt to slow the punt down, but the momentum was too great and they whizzed past Len with barely a pause. Though she was a little disappointed, Connie resigned herself to not seeing her sister today.

In some ways, Con felt really sorry for Len. On a day like this, Len and her fiancé were hundreds of miles apart, forced to ignore this day of celebration for simply practical reasons. It must be tough for them, Connie thought. She couldn’t even manage more than three days without David! Even constant letters would not replace that feeling of being together.

With Len firmly out of sight, Connie pushed her out of mind as well. There was no need to dwell on such things now, not tonight! Abruptly, she returned to her previous plea, this time leaping up with a deftness born of many years boating, and challenged him face to face. “Why can’t I punt?”

The sight of her long dark lashes purposely fluttering at him almost made David drop the long pole. “I… er… um… you can’t.” Finally he blinked and stood firm. “Not this time. It’s my duty, and I intend to do it by you tonight.”

Despite herself, Connie melted totally at his words. But she could not just give into him as she wanted to, not now. She had committed herself to taking her turn. Carefully, she rocked the punt, not enough to send it over, but enough to get his attention.

This time David let them drift a little and came down from the end to meet her in the centre, taking good care to keep hold of the pole. Con leaned forward to brush her lips against his. “Did you want to land in the river again?” she whispered into his ear.

He looked around nervously. “Not really,” he conceeded. “It was cold enough before, I hate to think what it’s like now. But if that’s what it will take to get you to submit for once…” David did as Con had before, rocking the punt, but more vigourously than she had done.

Connie considered that for a moment, then sat back down again, suitably repentent as David pushed them away from the riverbank. Usually she was able to stand up to him, and even get him to do her bidding, but when he really put his foot down, there was no changing his mind, just like her own father. Both were even more stubborn than she was. “So, where are you taking me tonight?”

“Aha!” he replied jovially. “That’s for me to know and you to find out. But wear your best dress. I want tonight to be special.”

There was no way to respond to that really. It was the fifth time she had asked him, and the answer was the same each time. Connie simply lay back and enjoyed the pleasant ride, as dusk began to fall, magical shadows reflecting across the lake. At the back of her mind a story began to form, but it was left unconsidered for the moment. She could use it to re-live this evening later.

Having returned the punt and taken Con to prepare herself, David returned to collect her, driving the car that belonged to his brother-in-law. “Hop in.”

Connie’s dress was simple, but pretty, and not one she had brough with her from home. Its cut flattered her figure, if a little more risque than her usual. As she had little time to get herself ready, and none of the girls were in, she had just released her hair from the clio, letting it fan out across her shoulders. David could not keep his eyes off her.

“Now close your eyes,” he said, “and no peeking.”

They were not in the car very long, but Connie had no idea where they were going. Once or twice she was tempted to sneak a look, but something inside stopped her. Eventually, David parked the car and opened the door, offering a hand to Connie. “Don’t open them yet.” Gently, he guided her up the path and up each of the three steps.

It was quiet. Almost too quiet. They couldn’t possibly be out anywhere, so where were they?

He took her round a couple of corners, and then stopped. “Now you can open them.”

Con’s eyes fluttered open. As they readjusted to the light, she began to make out some shapes in a dimly lit room. A room that looked kind of familiar. When she could finally place it, it was all Connie could to to keep herself from blurting out, “But this is your sister’s house!”

In front of her was a table, fully laid out with everything a romantic meal would need. The only light came from the candles at the centre. Connie turned to David in awe. “Did you do everything yourself?”

“Well, Jen helped me with the food, but everything else, yeah.”

“Oh it’s perfect!” Connie flung herself into David’s arms and hugged him close. Nothing would change this moment. Not ever.

Oops, it has been a bit longer than intended.

You know.... that actually WASN'T a cliff.

This however....

----

The start of Hillary brought with it significantly better weather in Oxford. Before a couple of days had passed, one bright spark had organised a large outdoor party, to take place on the coming Saturday. Somehow, they had commandeered a large part of the grounds of one of the colleges. Food was to be brought by the participants, which, considering the large numbers who planned to attend, was likely to be enough to feed a small nation, and varied in the extreme.

As it happened, both Connie and Len were intending to go. Connie and her friends had always intended to go, but Len had only made a last minute decision after the persuasion of a girl on her course. She had then worked her own magic to encourage her little coterie to join her. Con did not expect to see her sister during the course of the afternoon, however. Not only did she usually keep to her own group, but there would be that many people there it would be hard to find anyone. She had plans to meet up with David, but that was not until much later, when some people would have already left..

“Come on Connie, stop dawdling!” Julia took her by the sleeve and pulled her in the direction of the exceedingly large gathering that Con was finding a little disconcerting.

Meekly she did so, tailing behind a little until Julia let go. Connie was still rather overawed by the whole occasion.

“Don’t worry about her. She loves these things, that’s all.” Laurie’s voice behind her made Con visibly jump. “Steph’s almost as bad.” She gestured at their fourth member, who was happily skipping ahead with Julia and shrugged. “I like people, but I don’t like crowds. They’re way too noisy. So much chatter!”

Privately, Con agreed wholeheartedly, though she said nothing aloud. She had believed herself quite used to large amounts of people, but since coming to Oxford had found just how small her world was. The school was tiny by comparison, however big she had considered it then and even when it came to her family, they were rarely all together for long periods of time, even when under the same roof.

Yet despite her misgivings, she easily moved quickly into the party frame of mind. Even by the time Connie arrived at the gather several students were already drunk. Connie had no intentions of following them into that state, though she did pick up a drink as she passed the table. One was not going to hurt.

Connie moved through the throngs of people, talking to many, but keeping Julia in sight at all times. She tried to do the same with Steph and Laurie, but the whirlwind caught them early on and they disappeared into the masses.

“So what do you think of that last essay then, Connie?” asked Helen, a friend of Con’s from her course. “It’s a killer, if you ask me! I haven’t a clue where to start.”

Con threw her hair out of her face and giggled. “Oh, it’s not that bad really!” At Helen’s grimace, she expanded. “You just have to approach it in the right way. Listen…” and she detailed her idea, giving just the barest bones of the essay.

“I suppose that makes sense,” Helen replied slowly. “I’ll have to think it over. Thanks, Connie! You’re a real whiz at anything even remotely English! How on Earth do you do it?”

Blushing, Connie stammered something about being lucky. As Helen moved on to greet other friends, Connie looked around again for Julia. She had been standing just over…. there. The only person that stood there now was a tall man she did not recognise. Con looked around a little more, but Julia was gone. It would take forever to find her.

She moved her way out of the crowd, conscious that the people she knew had evidently moved on to a different part of the garden. Con could feel the apprehension rising in her mouth and she forced herself to calm. There was no need to go into a panic just because she did not know anyone! She had been meeting new people since she had first set foot in Oxford!

But by this point it was harder. Everyone was already settled. Even she herself was settled. Withdrawing into herself, Con found a corner where she could sit in peace on an upturned log. Behind a bush, it was out of the way of most. There were a couple of others scattered around, most likely doing the same as her. Connie stretched out before relaxing and taking her favourite thinking pose. The garden atmosphere and the weather were stimulating the creative part of the brain; Con could definitely feel another story coming on.

However, before she could get more than the vaguest of outlines of plot, a series of voices from behind interrupted her idyll.

That was very nice LadyG, but please may we have the rest of the story without any mountaineering being needed, some of us haven't had that much practice at it (yet!).

It was Pamela’s dulcet tones that reached Connie’s ear first. “I don’t know what these girls see in such frivolous pursuits. They just seem so wild and reckless!”

“Oh, absolutely,” agreed Karen, giggling. “And some of the things they get up to…. my goodness! My family would disown me if I acted like they did!”

Connie had to work incredibly hard to stifle a loud snort. Were these girls living some time in the last century? She really did not understand what Len saw in them.

Sue chimed in next. “There are so many girls with such a lack or morals that you really have do wonder about the parents! No offence, Len.”

THAT made Connie sit up and take notice. Len was with them and indeed listening to such rubbish? Eavesdropping may be impolite, but she could hardly get up and run away. And the words carried well anyway; it would take some distance to avoid.

“What do you mean? Why should I feel offended?” Len sounded rather confused.

“Well, what with your sister and all. Not the one who’s practically a nun, the one who’s here. They managed okay with you, but her…”

Con nearly lept up the strangle her in a fit of anger, her ears burning with rage. How dare they! She gathered herself together and prepared herself to move out of range. But the next few sentences stopped her totally in her tracks before she had even begun.

“Oh, you’ll never guess what I heard about her the other day,” Sue continued. “I heard….”

Connie never got to find out what Sue had heard on the grapevine, most likely incorrectly, for at that moment Len exploded, just as Con had felt like doing.

“How dare you say something like that?” She practically screamed, unconsciously echoing her triplet sister’s thought. Len had quite as powerful a temper as Margot, but usually she kept it under tight control. “Not only are you completely insulting my sister, but you’re casting aspersions on my entire family, myself included! I’ll have you know that Con is one of the sweetest, most loyal people I know, sister or not! And she certainly wouldn’t demean herself by acting like you are right now!”

A shocked silence fell across the area, among the bystanders as well as those involved.

“But… but Len,” Pamela stammered. “We thought you felt like we do!”

Len’s answer was stoney and condescending in the extreme. “Evidently not.”

“Well, at least we’re not defending a slut!”

Connie could almost feel Len stalking away, head held high, knowing to respond would be to lower herself to their level. There was a chorus of “Well!” from the crowd, but Con glowed inside. Len, her priggish elder sister, had finally broken into some semblance of real life and stood up for her. To the extent she would lose her closest friends. There was no closer bond than the one Len had just reaffirmed. To put it bluntly, Con was proud of her.

Glad their triplet bond is still there, no matter how under the surface it is

*wondering what else was being said about Con*

*Wonders what David has planned*

*Wonders whether Len or Con will say anything about the Convo*

*wonders where all her friends went*

Too many questions and not enough story !!!

PLEASE

Well, ONE of these will get answered. For now anyway.

-----

Later that day, Con managed to pull her defender aside for a moment. “Len, I just wanted to say thank you.” She took Len into an unexpected hug.

Not for the first time that day, Len was totally at a loss. “What for? I haven’t done anything in particular.”

“Yes you have. I… er… I accidentally overheard what happened between you and Pamela.”

Len shrugged. “Oh that. It was nothing special really. Anyone else would have done the same.” She looked rather downcast, in spite of the praise.

“Nothing special??” Con exclaimed. “Len, you put my honour before anything else, even though it was to the detriment of your own friendships!” A bit wordy perhaps, but Con just spoke the words as they entered her head; she had very little control. “That was completely above and beyond the call of duty, Len; you should be proud of yourself.”

A faint smile broke across Len’s face. “I just couldn’t listen to them saying that stuff about you. It wasn’t fair.”

Connie took Len’s arm in her own and went back to her old system of saying exactly what she thought, no matter how blunt. “We let ourselves drift apart. I never did like them, and I can’t say I’m sorry you argued, but I do want you to be happy. Let’s try not to let the gap get so wide again.”

For once, Len was the following sister, but she fully agreed, and they trooped off to spend some time together, oblivious to the sharp glares of a select few.

And who are the select few?
And what's the meaning of the sharp glances?

Sorry Lady G, but as soon as you answer one question we're eager to know the answers to other questions.

Glad to see Con and Len coming back together again. I have a feeling those people behind the glances are going to make trouble for Con. *Wibbles*

You all think of questions I didn't! Lol!

(I can't actually remember what I meant by the sharp glances. It probably just sounded good Wink And you never know!)
