#1: Len's Oxford Author: CiorstaidhLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 2:42 pm

Got bored waiting for dialup to open a page and this little idea popped into my head. I’m about to set the small sparkling purple leaf Exterminator on my office, but I think it’s too late.

*** *** ***

Len took in her surroundings with a sigh. This was the first time she’d ever felt so far from home. Even knowing that Con was just on the next staircase, suddenly, for the first time in her life, Len felt all alone.

She’d never had to live completely apart from all that she’d known before. She’d always had Mamma on hand. She’d always known most of the Staff on first name terms. She’d always had Con close to her.

But on their journey, Con had seemed distant. When Len tried to speak, Con just hushed her, nose deep in a book or her diary, or writing. More than that, as soon as they’d arrived at St Hilda’s, Con had taken up with a black girl from South London – horribly common, Len thought – and a Chinese girl, although she too sounded a Londoner. Len felt alone. None of her contemporaries were here. She knew there were some in the year above and two above in other colleges, but St Hilda’s was half a mile from any other college. It felt so remote! Not at all like Brasenose or Corpus Christi or the others in the city centre.

On their tour round, the guide was a second year student. She was studying engineering – a girl, studying engineering?! Len shook her head. And every second sentence concerned alcohol and parties and staying up late. Hardly a word was said about studying.

In the room above, someone switched on very loud music. It was that vulgar man, Elvis Presley. After her long and tiresome journey, Len decided to begin unpacking her trunk in this tiny hole of a room which would be home for the next year and then catch an early night.

Len sighed and looked at her watch. One-thirty. One-thirty and that music was still going on. She’d gone over to Con’s room for a bit of sympathy and a cup of coffee, but found the door locked and a suspicious silence form the interior. Dejected and confused, she returned to her own room via the buttery. How could Con have finished unpacking already?

In the buttery, she spotted her sister talking animatedly to the two girls she’d latched onto so quickly. Len squeezed in beside them, and found them to be Charity and Anna. She thought Anna an odd name for a Chinese girl, but wisely kept her own counsel. Nice enough to talk to, but they had a right funny outlook, Anna particularly. She was a – what did she say? – Buddhist. Len wished the religious education at the Chalet School had been wider and more informative.

Later, she heard the three girls chatting upstairs. The girl with the loud music was Charity, a buxom girl with frizzy hair. Len had never seen a girl like her before. That’s what comes from living such a sheltered life, she mused. And they still hadn’t gone to bed yet. Len wondered how her sister did it.

*** *** ***

Len had finally dropped off at four-ish. She managed to drag herself into the buttery just before nine, when it closed for breakfast. A mug of coffee was all she could manage. She looked like death warmed up. Len had never had trouble sleeping and was used to getting eight hours’ sleep regularly.

Suddenly, Len realised she was supposed to be at orientation in the Bodleian at ten. She gulped the rest of her coffee, scalding her throat as she did so, and ran up to her room. Pausing only to grab notebook, pen and purse and throw them in her cloth bag, Len ran back out and towards the bus stop. There was the bus. Leaving. Without her. Len sighed and sat down. There were twenty minutes before another would arrive.

Belatedly, she decided to slip into the porter’s office and ask if there was any post. Highly unlikely, she thought, but best to get into a routine anyway.

Len was surprised to find a letter waiting for her. She had a parcel as well, but she couldn’t get that until she had her matriculation card from the university and her college identification card, too. The latter she would get that evening. The former, today. Today! Mild panic set in as Len realised she didn’t have any proof of identity on her. She needed her Advanced certificates and her birth certificate to register. Len swore. She didn’t often swear, in fact hardly ever, but she’d heard Father use it several years ago, in a crash involving Minnie, and more recently, Steve had taken to it, provided Mother wasn’t around to be scandalised. And this was one situation which definitely merited the word.

Back up to her room, Len found the documents in her night bag and ran out again. This time, she just managed to catch the bus. She sat down, breathless. What a morning! And it was still only nine thirty!

Len joined those on her course, also in St Hilda’s, in the foyer to the Bodleian. Just when she began to speak to a blonde-haired girl who sounded Irish, she spotted her sister, surrounded by her two friends from the previous day. They looked bright and fresh as a daisy. And they’d had the nine o’clock tour!

Con swept past, excited about her first day as a university student. She was amazed to find that the two girls she’d hit it off with were both also English freshers. Charity and Anna were fun! They weren’t the dried-up types she’d met at school, not by a long shot! Con reflected on her friendships at the Chalet School. None had really endured, and she wondered if this was because the people she knew were all bland and sheltered individuals. Anna was interesting from her point of view as well. She was Buddhist and from what Con had gathered, hers was a very different view to Con’s own. Charity “wasn’t anything” to quote herself. She’d been brought up in a Christian home, but never really believed all that stuff. She just went to Mass to keep her mother happy, and wasn’t going to bother here.

Where was Len? A thought flashed across Con’s mind as she realised for the first time that she’d barely seen her triplet since they had arrived at St. Hilda’s. No matter, she thought, they’d catch up later.

“Con!” The call sounded across the entrance. Con turned and waved at her sister. Gosh, Con thought, Len looks completely washed out – like she didn’t sleep all night. Con wondered if Len had been enjoying herself as much as she last night.

“Hi, Len. How’ve you been settling in? I meant to come over last night, but time got away from me. Let’s catch up tonight – Anna and Charity have spotted a pub near college, and we can natter there.”

“Yeah, that’d be good, Con. I didn’t sleep that well, to be honest. The other two girls on my level were out late, and I haven’t explored the other parts of my staircase yet. But I didn’t sleep that well either; the girl above me was playing Elvis and other popular records until well past three. Hopefully things will settle down, now that the thrill of first night has past.”

Con flushed slightly at her sister’s last comment. She’d been enjoying herself without a thought for her sister – or anyone else on Len and Charity’s staircase, for that matter – and had caused her sister to be ill, or certainly to not be far from illness. Len leaned closer. “Con, you’re wearing make-up!”

Con shifted slightly. “Erm, yes, I didn’t sleep too well myself last night. Charity suggested I put some foundation on to hide the shadows. And you’ve got to agree, it works! Not that I’m going to make a habit of it, by any means! So, later? I’ve got to go and register, then find all the folks from other colleges who are doing English too. We’ve got all our introductory stuff today and then nothing until term which, of course, starts with Matric on Monday.”

“I look forward to it. What time – seven? Gives us time to enjoy dinner, too. Lucky you, having everything at once! I’ve got to be in today, tomorrow and Friday. Different lectures at different times, you know. Enjoy exploring Oxford!”

With that, Len hurried over to her library tour group, who were crowding over towards the middle of the foyer where their guide was beckoning them.

this is really good. It's interesting that Con is proving more open (and organised) than Len.

I wonder what it will take to bring Len into line with the modern girls.

Brilliant Very Happy It's interesting to see Con being the one to make friends and Len finding it hard! I feel sorry for her though, I found coming to uni strange enough and I didn't have a CS type background.

I agree that this role reversal is great! I just hope Con doesn't being to feel guilty about abandoning her work and her sister, and that Len doesn't get nasty!

#13:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 7:08 pm

This is good! Do go on- I'm feeling very sorry for Len. When I went from a small boarding school where I knew everyone and everyone knew me to uni I hated it at first, and it was only thanks to my lovely support officer that i was able to make any friends. Otherwise, I'd have been very much like Len.
Besides, next to Hilda Annersley, Len is pretty much my favourite character!!!

awh, youse all love me! Very Happy here's some more (to keep you busy whilst I finish a short Joey-and-Jack interregnum in the story)

*** *** ***

But Len’s mind wasn’t really on the tour. She’d agreed to Con’s proposal because she was too tired to argue, but she didn’t like the idea of going into a public house, of all places, to meet up with her sister. What were their rooms for, if not that? Len sighed.

It wasn’t just Con, either. She smiled wistfully as she thought of Reg. Reg. How she loved him! They’d had all summer together and now, she wouldn’t see her darling fiancé for nearly three months. Len felt as though a part of her was physically missing. They wandered through the great library and Len pretended to look interested. She saw the microfiche readers, and wondered how to work them – they were something new to her. And the reference system was so complex – the registers of cards were huge!

Eventually the tour came to an end. The guide had handed them all several pieces of paper to help them find their way around during the first few weeks of term. There was one more handout to collect. An exercise. Len groaned inwardly and cursed herself for not paying attention.

Registration was boring – long periods of standing in line and waiting. Eventually, matric card in hand, Len headed off for her meeting with her departmental personal tutor. It wasn’t for another half hour, but Len had already learned that these buildings were rabbit-warrens on a scale worse than her own beloved Chalet School.

Lucky for Len! She found her tutor two minutes before her appointment. Doctor Mélange was to help her throughout her time at university, whilst she would also have a collegiate personal tutor to help her with academic representation and college matters. She knocked on the door, a chilly feeling in her heart. Len berated herself for being so silly – it wasn’t as if she were in trouble!

“Entrez!” A crisp, clear voice, unmistakeably French, called out. Len came in quickly and, as a matter of course, curtsied. She looked up to see a bearded gentleman seated behind his desk, pipe in hand. He looked most amused at her little performance, and Len felt so stupid. She had to get out of school habits! Trouble was, these were habits of a lifetime – Len couldn’t remember knowing anything else.

“Please, sit. Now, Mary-”

“If you please, sir, it’s Len – I use my middle name of Helena, and Len is a short.”

The Doctor smiled, his eyes crinkling. Len warmed to him immediately. “Len it is. I see you have been educated in Switzerland, at a multi-lingual school. This is good – yes, very good. It will have prepared you for lectures permanently in French. Some folks arrive here having sat in French lessons twice a week and expect to manage in English all the time!” Len smiled, thinking of French days at the School – Miss Ferrars’ Geography lessons, Miss Annersley’s Scripture – and the advantage it now gave her.

“Now, the question of subjects. In this Michaelmas semester, you will study three subjects – French Language 1, French Literature 1 and Regional French. The first two are self-explanatory; the last is looking at ways in which, say, Canadian French differs to Parisian.”

This was boosting Len’s confidence more and more! What luck, to have such an idiomatic use of Canadian French! Although a little rusty, Len was sure she would do well here.

“Now, we come to the question of your fluency.”

“Oui, Monsieur le docteur. Alors, j’ai parlé le français tous les ans de ma vie – ma mère m’a aider, parce-qu’elle était á l’École de Chalet soi-même.” This came in such a rush that the professor, French as he was, almost gasped and had to compose himself quickly to catch what Len had said. “Okay, I think we’ve established you’re completely idiomatic, Len. All you life? That’s some dedication for a girl growing up in wartime and post-war England. And if I’m right, I can catch a twang of Montréal in there? Hmm, I thought so!” He smiled. “You shouldn’t have much problem with the first few weeks of Regional, then, but let’s see how you get on when we turn to Congolese French!” Len’s face remained unchanged, a trick she’d learned from her father, but inwardly she made a face. She was dismissed and she left the room a little wiser and a lot more relaxed over her course. Her experiences of arriving at St Hilda’s had knocked her confidence decidedly in various ways.

Len returned to St Hilda’s, sure in the knowledge that she’d be okay with French and certain that her German would be similar. If that was the case, it meant she could concentrate on getting used to the very different culture that was the University of Oxford.

Back in Switzerland, Joey sighed. Sat on the settee, her husband’s arms around her, she thought of her dear children, now further flung than ever. Margot had set off three weeks previously, since Edinburgh started back before Oxford. According to Jack, this was to be expected, along with shorter holidays – part of the privilege of being a medical student. She’d waved Len and Con off a week ago. Len seemed the more reluctant to go, which was strange. She said as much to Jack.

“But Joey, dearest, it’s to be expected. Why, Len has had to leave behind far more than Con – Reg, for starters. And then she’s always been a Somebody at the School, much more than Con. She was always Form Prefect or Second or somesuch role – and she’s always been a leader. Now, she’s all too aware that she’ll be one of many. In these ways, Con is able to leave behind much of what is here and start afresh. No, Jo,” as that lady began to protest, “I don’t mean that she won’t miss her family, or suddenly drop Ricki and Odette, but Len’s invested a lot into being the eldest, so much so that to an extent, she’s become old before her time. Con has always been happy to be middle of the pack and just to “be” – it’s her dreamy side that’s helped there. And she’ll find it so at Oxford. Len, having conditioned herself to a fine point, only knows one way. Con knows the role of being in the background, the other sister, the leader, the follower, the explorer. Look at how accepting she was of Ricki, more so than the others when it turned out the girl’s Quaker! And she’ll come across far more diversities at Oxford. Just see how the first term goes before you start worrying, my love. You were the same with Margot, and she seems to be having a fine time!” he finished, thinking of the letter which had arrived only that morning, probably omitting some of the details, if Jack’s own freshers’ week was anything to go by.

And so they sat, Jo with her sherry and Jack with his pipe, wondering what was happening to their eldest two daughters.

Well it's good to see Len feeling a little bit better, I guess the languages at the CS really will pay off for her! I like how understanding Jack is, and how you referenced Len's calm outward composure as being like Jack's- we forget that the girls take after him as well as Joey sometimes!

I so sympathise with Len - it sounds like my experience of uni, but without the benefits of the course advantage. I can see her taking longer to settle down, but ultimately being a lot happier, if she gets over herself, and because of the longer investment in being happy, won't want to leave. *grins* Will one of them come up against OICCU? I know they're usually less vociferous than CICCU, and DICCU but *grins*. I can see Con winding up at the John Wesley Society or something...

I'm thinking that Con might be about to come unstuck with the academic side of it - especially if Hilda and Madge were more old fashioned.

Great stuff Kirsty. Maybe the academic confidence will give Len a chance to relax a bit on the social side, especailly if that confidence is well founded.

Will we see Con again soon?

Oxford, Cambridge and Durham Inter-Collegiate Christian Union

They can be very vicious, and very evangelical. At the time of Len being at college - well, my mother has some hair-raising tales to tell about OICCU and CICCU.

For Len, the day had gone well. She hadn’t met anyone particularly; she’d been too busy thinking of home for that, but she’d come to know parts of Oxford and her way around the Modern Languages section of the Arts Faculty and where to find the relevant section of the library, even if not exactly where everything was. Len chuckled – she’d often berated Con for mooning when she should have been paying attention, and now here she was, exactly the same! They seemed to have swapped roles completely. Well, good for Con to be coming out of her shell, and Len rather liked the contemplative side she’d discovered which didn’t require her to be mature and leader-y at the same time. As she got into St Hilda’s, she headed into the JCR, where the college cards were being issued. The girl in front looked as lost as she did, so Len took a leaf out of her sister’s book and began a conversation, trying desperately not to be domineering or sheep-doggy.

“Gosh, what a day! I feel like I’ve been through several kinds of whirlwind at once!” She smiled. “I’m Len.”

“Jennie. Pleased to meet you. I know what you mean. I’m doing French, and what a nightmare the Arts building is!”

“French? Why, but that’s what I’m doing! At least,” Len added thoughtfully, “that’s half of what I’m doing. I’m keeping up my German as well. Who’s your tutor? Mine’s Doctor Mélange, and he’s quite a peach, I must say!”

“He reminds me of the Professor in the Narnia books, sort of cuddly, but makes you pay attention and do what he wants. Melly is my tute, too. How fun!” Jennie replied. “D’you know, I was late today. Meant to be at the library tour, but overslept completely – some joker thought it a good idea to play music till goodness knows when. Girl below me – I’m on staircase XII. I couldn’t get you to show me round, could I?”

Len grinned, her first smile since arriving which hadn’t been forced. “Curiouser and curiouser! I’m on XII too – except Charity’s above me.” Seeing Jennie’s puzzled look, she added, “that’s the girl with the music. She’s hooked up with my sister, as it happens. As for the library, I’m afraid I was in another world doing the tour. Oh, I was there in body, but not listening. We’ve got an assignment-” Len made a face –“due on the Thursday of second.”

Jennie groaned. “Oh well, at least we’ll be together at the bottom!” she laughed. “Not that I’m used to being bottom. Far from it – top of the class, usually. But then everyone here’s like that.”

“I guess so. Con was always top in English, me in Languages and Margot in Science – I guess we had quite a monopoly on class honours!”

“Con and Margot – friends of yours?”

“No.” Len grinned, pausing before the customary bombshell. “We’re triplets.”

“Triplets? Wow! I’ve never met triplets before! So, is one of them the sister you referred to?”

“Yep. Con. It’s so out of character for her – usually she’s moony and quiet, but things have changed so much.” Len sighed.

At that point, Jennie was called forward for her card, then Len. They agreed to meet up for dinner at the buttery, and to go out to the Flying Horse later, where Con had asked Len to meet her. Then they’d head to Jennie’s – Len reckoned it was better to be above the noise than below it – and have a good natter.

The two new friends enjoyed their dinner together, during which Len ascertained that Jennie had been at Cheltenham Ladies’ College and couldn’t believe how lax things were here. She’d always specialised in French and had decided that she wanted to interpret. Jennie’s mother had wanted her to stay at home and be presented, but Jennie herself would have none of it. Backed up by her father, she had come here to Oxford with the full intention of working in television or for an international company which could appreciate her abilities. Len shared about being in Switzerland and being the eldest in a long family. She yelped as she looked at her watch. “Goodness, it’s ten to seven! Do you have any idea where this pub is, Jennie?”

Jennie owned that she didn’t, so they raced down to the porter’s lodge to ask for directions. Five minutes later, they were entering a dingy, smoke-filled pub. Len couldn’t help a coughing fit, though she tried her hardest to conceal it. Even though her parents both smoked, as did many of her friends, she’d never got used to the way it enveloped you and filled every breath you took. Jennie pushed Len unceremoniously into a corner table.

“Hey! What on earth was that for?” Len spluttered, in between coughs.

“It’s less smoky in the corner, dope! Shall I find you sister? What’s she look like?”

“Couple of inches shorter than me, long curly hair in earphones, if I remember rightly, pale skin, darkest brown eyes you’ve ever seen. We’re blatantly sisters from our features too.”

“Okay, I’ll have a look around. What’s your poison? I’m having a port and lemon.”

Len’s eyebrows shot up. Not many women ordered port unless – but she shook herself for being so judgemental. “Just an orange juice for me, please.”

Jennie headed over to the bar and, once drinks were ordered, looked around the pub. She put down the drinks and headed over to the other side of the pub, reappearing a moment later with Con and her friends. What a change in Con! Len gaped as she saw her sister teeter over in heels she plainly wasn’t used to, a short skirt – Mamma would have a purple fit – violent red make up and – SHORT HAIR!

“Con!” It was all she could manage.

“Hey, Len. I see you’ve got a drink. Good. So, how’s tricks?”

“Well, I mean, they’re, um…” It was no good. “Con, all your beautiful hair! Why–”

“Because I was fed up to the back teeth with it, that’s why. It’s twenty times lighter this way.”

“But Con, you promised Mother you wouldn’t!”

“Oh, for goodness’ sake Len, grow UP! It’s MY hair, not Mother’s, and I can damn well do what I like with it. Besides, I looked ANCIENT with my hair done in those stupid earphones. And if Mum doesn’t like it, she’d better lump it, cos it’s too late now.” She calmly lit a cigarette.

This fresh cheek just wasn’t Con. “Con, what’s wrong? In two days, I feel like I don’t know you anymore. What’s happened?” Len tried to take a back seat, but Con flared up.

“You aren’t my mother, Len, you don’t have to be so damn responsible all the time! Just leave me alone. I’ve met people who are different, that’s all. I’m beginning to find me, instead of being constantly in your shadow, or Mother’s, or Auntie Madge’s. For the first time in my life I feel like a valid person myself.”

Len sighed. This had been a mistake. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Con. You know we never meant for you to fall under anyone’s shadow. And now, I have another appointment, so I’ll see you around. I’ll give your love to Mother.” On her utmost dignity, Len stood up and walked out of the door. Tears welled up inside her. What had happened to Con? Or was it her? What had gone wrong? They’d never had this problem before, never. Someone flung an arm around her.

“That took a lot of guts, Len. Oh, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” as a sob rose in Len’s throat. “Come on, let’s get you back to college, and you can tell me all about it over hot cocoa.” Jennie took her left hand in her own and guided a broken-hearted Len gently back to college.

Ensconced in Jennie’s comfy seat, cocoa in hand and blanket wrapped around her, Len poured her heart out. Jennie didn’t say a word, not even interrupting when Len stopped, wisely allowing Len her own time to get all this frustration out of her system.

Len concluded, saying, “I don’t know what I’ve done that has made Con feel so strongly against me. I never even knew Con HAD this side to her. Was I really so blind, so wrapped up in my own affairs? Oh, Jennie,” she sobbed, “I just want things back to the way they were. To when I knew what was going on, where I was headed, knew everyone and was comfortable with them.”

Silence reigned for a moment. “Why?”

“Because I knew where I was going. I was comfortable. I knew my position – in the family, in School. I was important. Con needed me. And now – now it seems like she hates me! She’s a part of me, Jennie, she really is. We’re not just sisters, we’re triplets. I feel a part of me is torn away. I wish I could just talk to Mamma or to Auntie Hilda right now – or to Reg,” she added, with a look at the discreet solitaire band on her finger. “They’d understand. Oh, I’m sorry. I’m dumping all this on you, someone I only met this afternoon!”

Jennie looked at Len pensively. She paused, collecting her thoughts before answering. “But would they, Len?”

“Would they what?” asked Len, confused.

“Understand. Your Mum has always been surrounded by school and never not known the world you knew. Your Auntie – well, she’s of a different era. She may have come here, but that was more than thirty years ago! And Reg – well, Reg is a man. No offence to him, but he won’t understand quite the same way. Men’s brains work differently to women’s. Men are practical – you tell them your problem, they’ll give you a solution. Women, on the other hand, are more emotional creatures. They’ll let you pour out your heart’s troubles and leave you to work out a solution yourself – which is the only way it’ll work out.

“Len, I know this is going to be hard. First term away is always hard. Most girls go through it at twelve, when they first go away to boarding school. You’ve come to it later, and with more of a bang, because of the size of the university. But I will be here for you. I will support you. And at the end of the day, you need to concentrate on number one. Con, you mother, Reg – all of them, important as they are, come way after you. Otherwise, you’ll leave this place without your sanity, much less a degree! You have to make some decisions, Len.

“And there are people here who can help you do that. At the end of the day, your tutor is here for that reason. Not to be an agony aunt, but, if you’re falling behind in classes due to personal troubles, tell her. And see the chaplain. Get involved. Father Robert is lovely – I went to see Chris, who’s the Anglican chaplain, and Father Robert was there too. Len, trust in God. It isn’t easy to do. I know that full well – it’s easy enough to pay lip service to our faith, but the real test comes in times like these. Len, can you really trust God? Remember what He said to Joshua? He knows the plans He has for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you – or words to that effect. Oh, come here,” as Len’s body heaved with sobs, “oh, Len, just let it all out, hon.” They sat there a long time, Jennie gently rocking Len as she let out all the frustration and grief of the last few days.

I'm glad to see that Len has made one friend at least, and it appears as though she's going to cope with her studies without too many problems.
I'm really interested in seeing what happens to her (and Con) next.

Eventually, the tears had ceased. Len gratefully accepted the glass of water offered to her and, feeling less faint but nevertheless extremely tired, returned to her room, accompanied by Jennie to make sure she was okay. They said goodbye when they reached Len’s door with a hug. “All right, darling, I’ll see you in the morning,” said Jennie. As she turned, she faced a furious-looking Con.

“What in the name of all that is sacred do you think you’re doing?” she asked, her voice quivering under the strain to keep from shouting. “Not only do you reject me, Len, now Reg as well? And as for you,” she cried, rounding on Jennie, “you adulterating, scheming little witch, are you proud of yourself?!”

Len looked completely bewildered. What was Con on about? But Jennie wasn’t as naïve as Len. She remained calm, reminding Con of the small matter of Len’s engagement and pushing her own sapphire under Con’s nose. “So you see, it isn’t what your disgusting mind thinks!” She was almost shouting in her fury. “I may be a hugging person, I may use endearments, but that doesn’t automatically make me gay, for God’s sakes, much less your sister! I don’t know you from Eve, but from what Len’s told me, you’ve changed out of all recognition. This is the exact time you should be supporting your sister, not destroying what little there is that still links her to home!” With that, she turned and disappeared up the stairs. A door slammed.

A stunned Con looked completely back-to-front. She noticed that Len had shut her door in the middle of the tirade. Putting her ear to the door, she could hear a quiet sobbing on the far side of the room. She knocked on the door, devastated at what she’d caused. “Len? Len, it’s Con, open the door, please, Len I’m sorry, Len?” No response. Con turned, horrified at this turn in events. Slowly she headed back to her room. She sat down, took some paper and her fountain pen, and began to write. And write and write.

Do you see what I mean about characters not behaving? I so totally didn't see any of that coming! Now I'm struggling over Con's writing as much as she is!

I'd envisaged Con - bit of a rebel, but manages okay, Len, minor dilemma, goes home at Christmas pensive, things sort themselves out - but it ain't going that way!

And between Len and Jennie, they're taking on a lot of my characteristics (apart from being engaged ROFL )

All suggestions are gratefully received and small sparkling purple leaf-feeders rewarded with parts! Never let it be said I exploit my public Very Happy

Kirsty, don't worry. Your characters are real, that's why they've run away with you! Let them speak, it's very good.

#91:  Author: KBLocation: Berlin, Germany PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2004 3:39 pm

Kirsty, as Pat said, these characters are really living and breathing! See if they can give you more ideas. Change the point of view from which you see the story - from Con's POV, from Jennie's, etc., find any holes that need background for and provide it. Trust me, the story is obviously there. You just need to find it.

I have to confess that I thought Jennie was gay and I was wondering how Len would react if and when she realised it. I'm glad she's not though. That would make this story too murky.

Well, Con hasn't changed completely - she's still blurting out whatever comes into her head Wink

#94:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Wed Feb 11, 2004 6:34 pm

This is great Kirsty, and I think I would echo the advice to look at things from each character's point of view, that will give each character chance to tell you their bit of the story. Your characters are very realistic and living, so just listen to them and they will tell you what happens next.

I think that Con is likely to sew a few 'wild oats', and would be interested to see the effect that has on her, wether she eventually conforms, or wether it changes her outlook for good.

Len will settle easier, but be rather unsocable, except maybe in a tight circle of friends. I wonder about Jennie, what gave Con that idea, I wouldn't have thought with Con's upbringing it would be the first thing that came to her mind, has someone else said things?

This is stunning. So true to life - I was engaged when I went back to uni, and found me a 'Jennie' in my present flatmate (and her fiance). It split, she was there.

Let them flow - it's wondeful.

Wow Kirsty! Thanks for giving us such a long bit, and such a good one. I'll echo what the others have said, they sound like living breathing people so let them have their say, you're writing this brilliantly.

I'm so glad Len's found Jennie, she seems sensible and affectionate, just what Len needs. I'm very worried about Con's friends though. Complete rebellion isn't entirely surprising now she's away from the controlling nature of her mother but still it's not good.

“Len,
my sister, my triplet, my friend. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I caused you such pain just now. Len – I, I don’t know what to say. How do I begin from what I assumed so wrongly?
“Let me tell you about how I saw you whilst we were growing up. Although only separated by half an hour, you’ve always naturally assumed leadership. To me, you’ve actually been an older sister, the way that all of us are to Felicity and the rest – shown us the way, always been ahead (sometimes been in higher forms than us!) and have always bee responsible when it comes to it. You’ve always been supportive. You’ve always been strong.
“When you got engaged to Reg, thrilled as I was, there was this doubt in my mind. We’ve grown up in an all-girls’ school, on an isolated Platz with few men around, and I wondered if you ewre accepting what you thought was love – I suppose I wasn’t sure if things would change when we saw the “real world”. And in many ways, that was because I was scared that it would turn out the same for me, and I want to feel free, not trapped. Not that – oh, this is all coming out wrong. Not that I think you WILL be trapped, but I can’t see it working for me. Okay, it worked for Mamma, but that doesn’t mean it’ll work for everyone. I’m a very free spirit. I want to fly on my own some time. Len, you seemed to think nothing would change when we went to Oxford. In some ways, I thought so too – although experiences and situations change, I was looking to you to be a leader, even a leader amongst nobodies.
“I’m ashamed to say I listened to the furtive whispers of people I barely know rather than the person I’ve been closest to for the last nineteen years of my life. I won’t say who, but they were way off base with Jennie. I was stupid not to see it – she’s obviously another Jane Carew where her language is concerned. If you could only see how much I mean this – I hope I haven’t done damage which can’t be remedied. You are the most wonderful, amazing person I have ever met, Len. That’s why I was so upset when I saw something that made you less than perfect. And even then, it was just like me. I thought I’d grown out of saying the first thing that comes into my head, after that whole affair with Ted and Emerence. And now, probably for the first time, I’ve seen the full-blown effect on you.
“I’ve been exploring being Con these last few days, rather than being ‘Jo Maynard’s daughter’ or ‘Len’s sister’. I have relied pretty hard on people who have more practice at being independent. Some of the things, I like. Many of them, I don’t like. I liked having the choice to have my hair this short – although I’d probably prefer it a little longer, it won’t take much time to get to where I want it to be. I like wearing make-up – but not the garish stuff Anna leant me. I like smoking – it relaxes me. I like being able to choose my clothes. But I don’t intend killing myself in those heels again or showing quite so much flesh! You know me, Len, you know my tastes. You know what a follower I am.
“Len, I swear, I will not make that mistake again. I’m writing to Jennie too – but I don’t know what room she is. Can you pop the enclosed under her door? I can’t believe I jumped to conclusions about her from one brief meeting. I’m sorry, Len. That’s all I can say: I’m sorry. Please will you forgive me?
“Your loving sister,
“Con.”

It sounded wooden and false, but Con had struggled with her pride and her shock to get this down on paper, and she wasn’t going to waste it! She wrote an apology to Jennie, regretting that she’d probably lost a potentially good friend. Jennie seemed chock full of common sense and caring. As she slipped the notes under Len’s door, dawn was rising. Con was thankful she wouldn’t have to get up that day and collapsed into bed.

This is excelllent Kirsty, the characters are wonderful, full of life. I'm glad that Con has apologised for being tactless, and reassured Len that she still cares for her, though I don't think she needed to apologise foe her clothes etc, she does have the right to experiment, and as she says, find the real 'Con', but I can understand why she apologised, considering the way she looks up to Len and values her opinion. I hope Len accepts the letter in the right spirit.

Good on Con for apologising to both Len and Jennie, can't be an easy thing to do. Now will Len accept her slightly modified sister? Especially after those comments about Reg (which were pretty accurate really, lets find Len a nice guy at Oxford Very Happy )

#112:  Author: patmacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 4:34 pm

I think con is showing quite a lot of maturity. She's thought it through and is big enough to own that she was wrong in some ways but still able to insist on her right to experiment with new ways.

One wonders hows much of Len's supposed leadership was due to the support and reinforcement she got from Jo and the school.

Well, this is becoming very, very interesting, isn't it? I love the places you're taking Con - I think it's very necessary for her! To my mind, she's always been the 'youngest' of the triplets, and I hope this helps her to grow up!

Just read the latest post. Kirsty this seems all very realistic and is wonderfully written. Con might have felt her letter was wooden but it seemed to speak out to me.
Can't wait to read if Len and Con make up. Hope so, I think the two sisters could have a wicked time at uni if they did.

I've just read this, and its brilliant.

I could imagine that both girls would have struggled to begin with, and its great to see them exploring different parts of their personality.

I've always wondered how they would have got on being away together, and whether Con, in particular, would have prefered to go to University away from her sisters.

I HATE it when real life dumps on top of my poor Julia!!! Had a massively busy weekend (mutter, moan, work thingys, not "that" sort of busy on Valentine's, not by a long shot!) and then yesterday evening, Julia was scared away by an obnoxious drunk who followed us halfway home and merited a 999 call Mad nevertheless, this is the sum total of what I managed over the weekend. Hope to get another chunk done tonight, though!

On the other side of the door, Len lay in her bed, curled up in a foetal position. She wasn’t sleeping. Len had cried and cried until she was too exhausted for sleep – despairing at Con, at what Jennie must think, at what anyone else must think. Crying in longing for Reg, to be safe in his arms. Not that he was very touchy-feely, in fact rather the opposite, he was quite aloof. But just his comfort. If Con decided to say anything to Mamma or Papa – she went numb at the thought.

If Len’s own sister could see a lesbian relationship, well, was it really there? Her mind went round and round, coming to no conclusions apart from making her ever more miserable. A thought entered Len’s mind – she should just get away from everyone. Stop ruining their precious lives. The miserable reality hit her as plausible, as the only way out – there was no way forward. No way. Len thanked God that she was too tired to move, and she wouldn’t know what to do, anyway.

She had just come to this most awful of epiphanies when she saw a white sheet of paper appearing under her door. Len slipped onto the floor and crawled to the door, clambered back into bed and tried to focus on the paper in the dim bedside light which had been on all night.

As Len read her sister’s uncharacteristically shaky hand, she felt a physical weight lift from her shoulders and a darkness from her heart. It didn’t take away the pain and distress that was there, but it gave Len the release she needed to finally sleep.

Jennie was also up thinking. After he first fury had subsided, her analytical mind began to work and question. Jennie’s temper was hot, and subsided as quickly as it arose, allowing her to detach her emotions whilst asking searching personal questions. She began to journal, as the only surefire way of keeping her thoughts linear rather than thinking absolute garbage.

What had made Con think there was a relationship between herself and Len? She thought immediately of the hugs and her “darling”s, “dear”s and so forth, but then she knew plenty of folk who were like that! Maybe Con didn’t, despite having been schooled on the Continent – at least, she presumed Con had been at the Chalet School, like Len. And come to that, if the School was really as isolated as Len made out, why was this the first thing to enter her mind? Jennie herself had known of lesbianism only because her closest friend, Abigail, had confided in her about her feelings last year. She remembered the weeks of unease which had followed; paranoia about Abs and whether she was attracted to her, whether she could be gay herself and not know it, and general misunderstanding. She felt for Con in that way, having seen Len’s side of their bond, the closest sisterly bond she’d ever seen. So why had Con jumped to that conclusion? Jennie considered herself a girl of relatively broad experience and maturity, and yet the concept had surprised her – but Con? Had, perhaps, someone else said something? The gossip mill usually ran quickly, but so soon after everyone’s arrival, when they still barely knew each other, let alone all one hundred in their yeargroup?

Perplexed, but glad the questions were out in the open, Jennie thought also of Len, and what the poor girl would be thinking now. Clearly more naïve than her sister, what would she think after the bombshell, false as it was? Jennie was worried that Len’s reaction would be worse than hers had been toward Abs for a time – friends as the girls were now, it had ruined things for a time, and in such a new friendship, this could be many times worse. Jennie liked Len; she really didn’t want to lose this new friend.

She stopped. Why? Yes, Len was a friend, and one never likes losing a friend, but why was this so strong? Jennie decided it must be a mother-instinct, having seen Len so distraught and devoid of friends or companions. That must have surely been why she also flared up so furiously. Jennie noticed the dawn. No point in sleeping now, she thought. Jennie dressed and left for a morning jog, to stretch her muscles after being cramped over her writing pad for so long. She crept along the landing and down the stairs, thinking especially of Ellie and Carol, the other two girls on her landing.

#192:  Author: CiorstaidhLocation: London PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 5:09 pm

yup - TD is Thinking Day, which is Sunday. Not currently being attached to any Ranger Unit (or technically a pad-member, not having paid my subs oopsy) and our church not having its own Units, there isn't anything much going on (except that I'll be in uniform to mark the Day).

I loved it at school that on Thinking Day we had the right to wear our Rainbow/Brownie/Guide/Ranger or Beaver/Cub/Scout/Venture uniforms (although by the time we got to High School, we were at that self-conscious age where we only pinned our World badges onto the lapel of our blazer on TD). Just cos it was a day you didn't have to wear school uniform!!! Laughing

Thinking Day, February 22nd, was chosen as the date to specifically remember our brothers and sisters in the Guide and Scout movements across the globe, because it was the birthday of Lady and Lord Baden-Powell, founders of the movements. There's a parade at Westminster every year. Our County (East Renfrewshire) used to mark it with attendance in uniform at church without a march or flags in our units, plus an evening service with all the unit flags of the Companies for the entire County (points out that East Renfrewshire only has 8,000 Guidinguk members - the Scouts did something separate). In CoS we don't generally have church attendance every month - just on Armistice (including march past freezing our butts off) and TD.

Had a hectic day today and left my disk at home grrr... so there'll be an extra big chunk on here for y'all on Monday Very Happy

#193:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 5:28 pm

So did the Powell's have the same birthdate? I cannot remember, but I do remember it struck me as odd that TD was for both their birthdays.

And Ciorstaidh, more story when you have the chance would be great.

#195:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Sat Feb 21, 2004 12:01 am

Both A and J have been told about thinking day, but neither have been told to do anything special. The Brownies are not a church pack and the Beavers have a parade Sunday once a month (which we don't go to 'cos of going to our own services) and that's that. They didn't meet this week anyway 'cos of half term.

Neither of them knew wether it was last Sunday or this Sunday either.

sorry folks for getting all your hopes up, but no more done yet. i'll get it done when i can, but at the moment i'm spending so much time messing around with s*dding doctors and s*dding A&E and i'm in rather a bear-with-a-sore-paw mode at the moment. so give me time and it will come, but if i'm quiet, it's health reasons - also, i have those CDs to do for TG!

tysm all of you for not lynching me Shocked to be perfectly honest, Len is going to have to lie dormant for at least the next week, with all these CDs to deal with! <Keeps on PMing authors and editing>

I've got a cold which keeps coming and going, which isn't helping my mood either... that's why Len will have to stay curled up in her defensive ball for now (it's no bad thing, either, for her to get that long rest now!) Even Julia is staying quiet at the moment - she's a most considerate PB, really Very Happy <feeds Julia Bailey's and Quality Street for being so brilliant>

**************************************************

Jennie, exhausted by the previous night’s happenings, woke refreshed. As she passed Len’s room, she thought to stop in, but decided that Len needed time to herself. Her day went quietly, without any dramatics – for which she was thankful.

She returned at a reasonable hour to find a letter pinned to her door, with a little scrawl on the outside saying, “Con sent this”. Jennie tore it open and skimmed the contents – very sorry, shouldn’t have presumed, blah blah blah. Then she caught herself. Since when had she become so cynical? From the horrified look on Con’s face, she almost certainly was genuinely sorry. But that didn’t change the hurt already caused.

Jennie thought of poor Len and instinctively felt protective. Then she shook herself violently. ‘Don’t be so silly, Jennie! Len is perfectly able to look after herself!’

But was she?

*** *** ***

Len woke late, exhausted still from her emotional collapse. She had a raging headache. Oh, for the days when Matey packed you off to bed because of a single cough!

She took an aspirin and put the kettle on. Feeling slightly more human with a cup of tea inside her, she showered and dressed. Gazing at Con’s letter, she snatched it up. Len half-thought to destroy it, then thought better. Grabbing a notepad and handkerchief, she headed down to the Quad, determined to sort things out with her sister.

*** *** ***

When Con returned to her room, she sat down wearily. All her energies had gone into those letters. Writing to Jennie had been hard, but to her own sister, when she knew some of the hurt she had caused, that really took the biscuit.

Dawn stole in through Con’s window, and she was dozing in her comfy chair.

*** *** ***

Len was in a complete state. Having reread Con’s letter, it hit her afresh, all that was contained therein. She began to brainstorm and see what Con had seen, had thought. But this was difficult for Len. She didn’t understand some things. For instance, this idea that she and Jennie…? But Jennie was another woman; you can’t be attracted to other women! Having come to a very early standstill, Len decided to hunt down her sister and speak to her face to face – most especially over what in the world she meant about Reg.

NEXT BIT!

Con woke, groggy from the sort of sleep that you’d have been better without, and stretched slowly. She heard a knock at her door.

“Just a second,” she called. Without stopping to check her appearance in the mirror, she opened her door on Len. Con inhaled sharply, expecting a barrage of angry words. She knew that, when it came down to it, Len had an even worse temper than their missing triplet, Margot.

But Len didn’t notice this, and she didn’t feel angry. She spoke in a voice not much above a whisper. “Con, I need to talk to you. Letters can only say so much and we really need to talk.”

Wordlessly, Con moved aside to admit Len. Settled in Con’s chair and on her bed respectively, Con looked up at her sister. For the first time she noticed that Len wasn’t seething with rage, but looked genuinely perplexed.

Neither spoke for some time. Then, just as Con thought she must scream if only to break the awful silence, Len took a deep breath. What she said drew a reaction out of Con.

“Con, last night you said some awful things. I need you to explain them to me.”

“Explain? Len, I wrote down the expla-“

“You might be good at writing fiction, Con, but you’re not good at explaining things in words. You’ve said what you thought, but I need to know why.

“The first thing I don’t understand is this notion about Jennie. She’s a friend; even in two days we’ve become close friends. But I don’t understand how one woman can have feelings for another – it’s not possible; God created man and woman to be together, not woman and woman!”

Con sighed. She’d had this explained to her only twenty four hours before, and still it was a shock to her. She didn’t know quite how her sister would take this.

“Len, do you accept that we’ve led very sheltered lives up until now?”

“Well, I wouldn’t have said so particularly, but obviously there’s some things we don’t know.”

“Like how babies are born?” Len blushed; it was true. “Even in the last twenty-four hours, my understanding of the world’s workings have been increased more than ever before. Len, we’ve spent all our lives under adults who belong to a different age. This is the 1960s; people don’t put their hair up when they’re eighteen anymore – that was old fashioned even in Mother’s day! Is it not possible, having spent most of our lives at an all-girls’ boarding school, halfway up a remote mountain in the middle of Switzerland, that there are things we don’t know that we should? I think so,” Con continued, before her sister could put her twopenn’orth in. “The love that you feel for Reg, you can’t imagine life without him, no? Is it so far from the realms of probability that that feeling could come between two women or, come to that, two men? That one woman could provide for, care for, support, another?”

“Well, I- I suppose… oh, I suppose you might be right.”

“I am right,” Con said, decisively. “Just look at Willy and Ferry.” Astonishment flooded Lenn’s face. “You didn’t think they’re really only good friends, did you? After what happened over Ferry’s appendix? I’ll admit, I didn’t think much of it at the time, though I was confused. But it came to me straight away once I was aware of the fact that there are gays in the world – ‘gay’ is the word for people attracted to someone of the same sex. And given that, is it any wonder some folks have thought most certainly that Jennie is so inclined? She’s very flamboyant, very protective of those she cares for – most exclusively of you. And it naturally follows that some would think there was something going on between you and Jennie. Why not? We’re all adults, we can all do what we please.”

“But CON, I’m engaged!”

“Not everyone knows that, Len. And even those who do, well, it’s possible for engagements to be broken. And, well, they’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d been pushed into engagement, given you hadn’t even finished school when it happened. All the men you’ve ever known have been brothers or wards or cousins or else children of Mother’s close friends – apart from the doctors at the San – so it isn’t beyond possibility that the first eligible man who comes along, the first one you feel the slightest feeling for, is the one you presume you’re in love with, meant to marry. And then you come to university. You meet different people. And, eventually, you find that Reg isn’t the man you want to spend the rest of your life with. There’s more on offer than the junior doctor at your Dad’s San.”

Len looked absolutely purple with fury at this attack on her and Reg. Con hurried on. “I’m just saying what some people think, playing Devil’s advocate – in order for you to understand where they’re coming from, someone has to be blunt with you. Len, take this term as an opportunity to explore who you are, and don’t tie yourself down immediately with one man. Enjoy yourself. And if, at the end of the term, you’re still absolutely convinced that Reg is the man for you, then fine. We’re all wrong. I just don’t want to see you feeling trapped in a loveless marriage ten years down the line.”

Len’s mind was in absolute chaos. Some parts of her knew that Con was right. Others wanted to scream and throw things at her sister for thinking that she could be adulterous not a week after leaving Reg in Switzerland.

“I- I need to think about this, Con,” she managed, “it’s rather a shock to me. And you’ll forgive me for feeling that a lot of this is an attack on my character and integrity? Because that’s what it feels like. Can we leave this for now? I know there’s a parcel for us at the porter’s lodge, and you can bet it’s from Mamma.”

The sisters strolled down to the lodge, not quite arm in arm, but not quite at daggers drawn.

Interesting to see that Con seems to be growing up more quickly than Len, and that it's she who is becoming the responsible one.

Now I've read the next bit & I want the next next bit!
Ciorstaidh this is fabulous - I can still remember the shock and embarasment I felt when everyone else in my class at an all girls high school said they knew what a lesbian was and I didn't - admittedly I now realise that some of them probably didn't understand either but at the time....

#252:  Author: patmacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Wed Apr 07, 2004 6:44 am

Hooray, Len is back! Thanks Kirsty.

Certainly in the late 50s and early 60s most girls wouldn't have known about even the possibility of anything except heterosexuality - I certainly didn't till well after I left school. So although the Chalet School may be sheltered, it was no more so than many at the time.

I love the way Con has caught on to the real world so much quicker than Len. It really makes for a strong story.

Is there more to come? soon?

yes, there is more to come. However, I'm fighting Julia because she wants to turn t into a farcical FCS thing and this is sooo not the issue. Julia's in disgrace at the moment until she behaves (I think she might have had too much coffee Wink )

in addition, I've got a deadline of 5pm today for this appeal against a decree nisi and next week for the judicial review stuff Confused

A series of letters

From Joey Maynard to her daughters Len and Con

“Hello my chickadees,

I hope you’re settling in to St. Hilda’s fine. First time away from home – gosh, I remember my own like it was yesterday! Of course, that wasn’t to further study, but to India, but boy did a lot happen even on the way there!

The house seems so quiet without you three here. All of a sudden I’m without my three biggest helpers – aside from Anna and Rosli, of course. You know what the weather can be like over here in winter, so Cecil’s a boarder for this term – and is she proud of being one of the “big girls”! Phil and Geoff started at St. Nicholas’ this term, so the days really are empty. I’ve only got baby Claire to care for now, and I’ll lose even her in two years’ time to the School. Next time you see me I’ll have some news – but I’m not telling you yet, it’s something you’ll see for yourselves!”

At this point Con broke off from reading aloud; “lawks, that means she’s ‘busy’ again! We’ll be more like aunties to this one than sisters.” She continued:

“You wouldn’t believe the middles’ latest; such a scream!” She stopped and scanned the rest of the pages. “Do you particularly want to hear what the juniors we left just a term ago have been up to?” Len shook her head, still in shock from what had happened just previously. “Well, that’s the sum of the rest of the letter.” They attacked the parcel, which produced woollen twinsets for the pair of them; one in lime green, the other in jade. Joey’s note read, “these weren’t quite ready when you left – thought you’d appreciate them for when the winter weather comes.” Pots of jam from Anna were also contained. ‘Just like tuck-boxes at school,’ mused Con.

From Christopher Smythe-Wickett to his fiancée, Jennie

To the Honourable Lady Jennifer,
Greetings. I trust that you have settled well into your College dwellings. London is such a bore; all the boys are interested in is one party after another in the hope of finding someone presentable – the Crown may have stopped having ladies presented in Court, but a sensible yet stunning wife is a must in our circles. We, of course, are already attached, thanks to our mothers’ close friendship. I hope that the freshers’ events have not been too tiring for you and that you have been prudent enough so as not to arouse suspicion – the last thing I need is the press on my tail right now.
I shall see you at Christmas.
Christopher

(Jennie’s most reprehensible reaction to this was to throw the note in the bin, then, with a wicked gleam in her eye, thought of the fun she’d been missing thanks to this loveless union – fun she was determined to have while she was still free).

From Margot Maynard to her sisters Len and Con

Dear Len and Con,
I’ve now settled into work at Edinburgh and I trust that you are enjoying the delights of the town before beginning work. I tell you, it’s only two weeks since we were parted, but I really feel it! Work looks like being a real slog for me – twelve-week terms (as opposed to your eight) and no half-term…I’m going to be frazzled at Christmas; I only get off on 18 December!
The CathSoc here are wonderful – really supportive. I spent most of my ‘freshers’ week with them, as opposed to the drinking games and other odd things the Union seemed to put on. I mean, the CU are all right, but some of them have fumy ideas (like Catholics not being Christians and other such rubbish), and, well, they just can’t cater for certain needs that we have as Catholics. They also don’t understand why I want to enter the Sisterhood.
Do keep me updated – who you’ve made friends with, how other old Chaletians are getting on, how your courses are going. For me, it’s sort of hard to say at the moment, since we’ve only been at it a week and there aren’t any Chaletians here, except one who apparently is in her final year and so on her elective at present. But I truly have made some great friends, especially Katherine, who’s on my course, and Andrew, who’s in my Hall. He often walks me back at night, after we’ve been to a CathSoc event, since this IS a city – not the Platz!
Love to you both,
Margot

#255:  Author: CiorstaidhLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Apr 07, 2004 4:10 pm

From Len Maynard to her friend Jo Scott

Dear Jo,
How are you getting on at Bedford? I know Ruey’s dying to find out what it’s like, because she wants to apply next year. Met any other old Chaletians? It’s odd; I’d have thought there would be many here at Oxford, what with the numerous scholarships available to us, let alone those for the English Branch! But I don’t know of any who’ve come this year. Maybe a break from school altogether is best.
Oxford is…very different to how I expected it. Don’t ask me why, but I guess I thought of uni in a similar vein to school – something you go through and if you sail through one you sail through the other. Not true! Not true at ALL!
Although I’m okay in my French, Catalan is a different kettle of fish – it’s a beginner’s module, but accelerated so that at the end of first year we’re at the same level as all other degree students in other languages. It’s a real challenge! I’m very glad for Mlle’s methods of learning – Sally-go-round-the-moon’s, too. Having learned French in Canada and pretty much always spoken German with Anna, I never had to learn those, but I picked up on your moans and those of others and have done the lists thing – you know, learning ten words a day. It really helps! I’m so glad of the whole days in French, too; some of the people here didn’t even have to speak French all the time to their French mistresses, and as a result they’re in a right muddle!
I’m missing home a lot more than I thought I would, too. I suppose it’s the realisation that I can’t just nip through the garden to drop off a parcel to Mamma or Anna. I mean, Con’s here, but – I don’t know – she’s changed. She’s changed and I haven’t. It’s probably no bad thing, Con was always in either my shadow or Margot’s, and she’s certainly not any longer! She’s given me a lot to think about, but I won’t bore you with the details.
All my love,
Len

From Con Maynard to her friend Odette

Dear Odette,
How’s the Sorbonne? You lucky thing, getting in there! I bet Ferry and Miss Moore were pleased as buckets to see you reading Geography. You lucky thing, right in the centre of Paris! The nightlife, the culture…I almost wish I’d gone there myself.
Oxford is a lot quieter than Paris, even though it’s home to thirty undergraduate colleges, each containing around 300 undergrads and I’m not sure how many postgraduates there are. The nightlife certainly isn’t up to much – there are a few pubs and that’s about it (at least they aren’t the dives they’re reputed to be). I’ve got two good friends, Charity and Anna; at least – I thought they were really good friends. But they seem to have got off on completely the wrong foot with Len and a new friend of hers, Jennie. Charity has the largest record collection I have ever seen, and as for Anna, well she’s just wise in the ways of the world like I’d never known before. I tell you, I’ve learned more in the last week in terms of life in contemporary Britain than I learned in ten years at the Chalet! Anna assures me they’re things everyone knows, but I’m not so sure that they are such common knowledge as all that. Ooh – I have to tell you – I cut my hair! It’s in a short bob without a fringe – can’t stand the things – and my hair is so very much lighter! I’m long done with those stupid earphones. They’re fine for Mamma, but not for me – my hair was always to thin to make more than two little fists of hair. Do come over and visit any time – there are rooms set aside specifically for that purpose in the college, so don’t worry about housing!
Take care old thing,
Con

That was the bit I had to change; Julia wanted to make a whole thing about how hideous they were and wouldn't listen to my protestations that the reaction she wanted from Len just wasn't in character... he he he

*posts this bit so she can hear the reaction - I don't have access for the whole bank holiday he he he!!!*

*** *** ***

It was now the first week in November. Len had settled down into her classes well enough and was making many friends. Even though she was topping every class she attended, no-one thought her a swot – because she was so nice about it and so helpful! Many a student had taken on the Chalet’s way of learning languages after having asked Len about her success rate. As a matter of fact, five of the students on Len’s Catalan ‘B-stream’ course were St. Hilda’s girls and two more lived locally, and so they made Saturday afternoon Catalan-only time. Naturally, some students jeered at this approach, but it helped them all to improve both vocabulary and accent.

After the first flurry of partying, Con had slowly distanced herself from Anna. They were still good friends, and made up a threesome with Charity, with whom Con was still particularly friendly, but Con was wise enough to know that some girls are Trouble – and Anna wasn’t far off. Those whispered secrets and rumours of the first week had had an irrevocable effect on Con’s relationship with her sister. She may have decided they were a load of rubbish, but Con had opened pandora’s box when she listened to Anna, and the doubts remained at the back of her mind, along with knowledge she had a feeling she’d be better off without. For Len’s part, she just couldn’t trust her sister as much as before. She’d been utterly trampled on and destroyed by Con’s assumptions, and the scars which were left would never heal completely.

Con’s work standard, however, left a fair amount to be desired. She’d felt extremely put down when her Shakespeare lecturer had returned work with the comment “we’re not in the Kindergarten anymore, Constance”. She excelled in Creative English, constantly being pushed to explore new boundaries, new metaphors, new mediums. As for Victoriana, Con was frankly complacent. She’d had many a lecture on the Classics from the Abbess and felt that she’d learned all there was to learn about Pride and Prejudice. Her results were, consequently, mediocre. However, she was enjoying herself, and this was only Michaelmas. No worries yet.

Jennie was a part of the Saturday Catalan group, but within that she and Len continued to grow stronger in friendship. They discovered they enjoyed the same jokes, kept notes in the same meticulous manner, and enjoyed sharing stories about their upbringings. Both were similarly reticent about their respective fiancés. When asked, Jennie would hurriedly reply, “his name’s Christopher and he doesn’t work – not really. He’s an art dealer and his mother knows mine, so it’s sort of been a given since we were tinies.”

Len pondered this situation and thought that it was rather similar to her own. When she’d thought about Con’s responses that day after the all-out war took place on her landing, she could see a smidgen of truth – if not completely there, it was possible. Con certainly seemed to be enjoying herself on that front, she reflected. She was always walking around with a mixed group of friends, often with a different man at her side. Len wasn’t too surprised; Con was an attractive girl who had most certainly come out of her shell.

Jennie came racing into the Refectory one evening, breathless. She’d clearly run all the way from the bus-stop. Spying Len, she dived headlong to the table to demand, “Len, have you bought your tickets yet?”

“Tickets?”

“Yes, for the Arts Faculty Ball; it’s in three weeks’ time – the notice went up today.”

“Did it? I didn’t notice. You said ‘tickets’ – I don’t have anyone to go with; why would I buy more than one?”

“Because you’ve got to; all sales are for ‘one plus partner.’ Oh, do come, it’ll be a fantastic night out!”

“But Jennie, didn’t you hear me? I’ve no-one to go with!”

“Why do you think I’m asking you?”

“Wha-aa?”

“Len. Both of us have partners who haven’t bothered to come and visit us this entire term, and have barely written. So why don’t we go and enjoy ourselves for one evening instead of pining away while everyone else has the time of our lives?”

Len was about to protest that Reg could hardly just drop by to visit from the Platz, but with Jennie in this mood she thought wiser. “I still don’t get you.”

Jennie took Len’s face in her hand and spoke slowly and deliberately. “Will you partner me to the Arts Faculty Ball, Len?”

Len’s face cleared. For a whole second she had thought that Con – or the person who had spoken to Con – had been right all along. But Jennie wanted them just to go as friends. “Of course, Jennie. I’d be delighted.”

“Right, I’ll just go and change then pop back down.”

Len didn’t see the look of pure elation on Jennie’s face as she left the Refectory.

A miss placed yibble, now here in its proper home:

To go back to a yibble pages back (sorry, but I'm new here, and just catching up) Margot says she's in CathSoc at Edinburgh. There ain't no such animule: The Catholic Students' Union is on the west side of George Square, we generally thought of it as the CSU or the Chaplaincy, although the University caplaincy which is used by protestants and the Chrisitian Union, is housed in the modern Students Union building in Bristo Square. The Friary is next door to the CSU and the Chapel is upstairs, the whole first floor being knocked into one L shaped room, very plain, with the altar in the wide bay window, looking out onto a mature sycamore tree. It's very plain, and simple, and I love it. It's dedicated to St Albert the Great, and the friary is Dominican, of course. On Holidays we use the somewhat larger chapel at St Catherine's convent (Sisters of Mercy) which backs onto my daughter's high school which was originally the convent school.

And also to prevent this drabble falling off the list, cos that would be tragic!

As you may well have guessed, RL has been a royal pain recently. I'm going to let this lie and pick up when RL is more calm.

Thanks for the info, MissPrint (I was working on the premise that maybe there was one in the early 1960s - there may not be now; I've never been to Edinburgh uni so don't know). I'm just going to carry on adding details as they come and if they're innacurate, then this is fiction! (I bet loads of Oxford people could already tell me dozens of inconsistencies with RL at college)!

Jennie took Len’s face in her hand and spoke slowly and deliberately. “Will you partner me to the Arts Faculty Ball, Len?”

“OH!”

It came as a total shock to Len. “But, why, I mean, wha-, I, er-” Len’s confusion turned into completely nonsensical babble.

and one new:

Someone else, however, had. Con, entering the refectory late, spotted her sister with Jennie, then, as Jennie straightened and turned away, there was no mistaking that look on her face.

Despite her letters of apology and talks with Len, Con harboured doubts about Jennie. However, she knew it was a sore point with her sister and so tried to avoid any mention of Jennie at all.

“Hi, Len,” said a voice at her elbow.

“Oh, Con, sit down! Have you heard about the Ball yet?”

“Saturday of eighth, double room included that night? Yes, Tom bought my ticket already,” Con replied, a smile crossing her face and a warm feeling rising within her. Tom was – well, he was special. Unlike most of the men who followed her around, Tom seemed genuinely interested in her, encouraging her writing and listening to her problems. For the first time, Con thought, she knew what it felt like to be loved.

“Oh, good! Jennie’s persuaded me to go,” said Len, offhandedly.

Con stared. She could not believe it. It took Con all her strength to keep her mouth from falling open and causing her more trouble. She turned to her dinner, so that Len wouldn’t see her lack of response as rudeness.

“It’s because it’s one plus partner only, and neither of our fiancés will be able to make it,” Len volunteered. “It should be a good night out.”

“Yes,” replied Con weakly.

Silence fell, only broken when Jennie sat down next to Len. ‘She couldn’t get any closer if she tried,’ thought Con, ‘she’s squeezed so close their legs are touching.’ She scolded herself for these assumptions. After all, maybe she was wrong. But she knew in her heart of hearts that she wasn’t.

“Hi, Con,” said Jennie vivaciously. “What are you doing three weeks hence?”

“Probably scribbling like mad,” admitted Con, “in between finding a dress for this blasted Ball!”

“Oh, are you coming too? Well, maybe if we all went shopping for dresses at the same time, it would help in finding one that will make you shine as a diamond among coal, or something like that! How does Saturday suit you?”

Con muttered that that would be fine, seeing the doting eyes before her which were most certainly not looking in her direction.

At Jennie's request:

*** *** ***

Saturday morning saw the three girls in the town centre early. They began with Debenhams, Jennie commenting that this would be the cheapest place to get decent dresses, “since even Marks and Sparks can’t come up with anything decent this season.” Jennie found a midnight blue sleeveless dress, not too puffy, which Con thought would suit her sister down to the ground. They went into the changing rooms to consider it. Con stood to one side whilst Jennie helped Len into the dress, which had a fiddlesome set of hooks at the back. It was perfect, she thought, seeing Len in the mirror. Absolutely perfect.

Len surveyed herself in the mirror. “Isn’t it a little…daring?” she asked. “The dress, I mean – it’s quite low-cut on the chest.”

“It’s supposed to be,” laughed Con. “Don’t worry, it is absolutely perfect on you. I’ll have to make sure we get some decent pictures taken – Reg will go weak at the knees to see you in that!” Len blushed, making her more beautiful than ever, if that were possible.

Con also found a dress in Debenhams – a dark green, straight down – more an evening gown than a ball gown, but she liked it. With a scooped neckline and mini-sleeves, it made her look quite elegant.

Jennie ordered her dress up from London, through her fiancé’s account at a tailor’s.

All were set for the Ball. Now, down to work!

*** *** ***

The date crept up on them all – with supervisions all over the place and assignments due in, each had their work cut out, and none of them saw much of the others. It came to Saturday afternoon, and Len heard a knock on her door. The visitor entered without waiting for an answer: it was Jennie.

“Hi, Len! I know this is Catalan thingummy,” as Len frowned slightly, “but come on, the Ball isn’t far away! Now, what are you going to do with your hair?”

Len owned she hadn’t thought about it much, but it would probably go in its usual bun. “Say what? No, no, no, I can’t have my Len looking like an old maid! Your hair shall be down – those beautiful curls must be allowed out every once in a while! I think I’ll touch up your face a little, as well – if you don’t mind me doing your makeup? Also, since the room is included in the tickets, shall we use it? That way, we can enjoy ourselves and not have to get home, but can just roll into bed.”

Len assented; it was easier to do so than to argue the point when Jennie had already made her mind up. She allowed Jennie to dress and perform her toilette. She wondered – for it had always remained at the back of her mind also – if Jennie spent just a little too long adjusting the dress at her waist. But shook the thought off immediately; Jennie was simply trying to make her friend look the best she could!

They taxied over to the hotel where the Ball was being held, and stepped onto the pavement. A bitter wind was blowing. “Come on, let’s get inside,” said Jennie, one arm around Len’s waist as she guided the girl in the right direction, and passing their overnight luggage to the porter.

*** *** ***

The meal was fabulous. Con and Tom were on the same table as Len and Jennie, and their eyes were never off each other. Len felt heartsick for Reg, even as she was happy for her sister. Not long after the meal finished, dancing began. Con and Tom disappeared from sight, and Len surmised that they were enjoying the night sky, since the wind had dropped considerably.

It wasn’t long after midnight when Jennie sought Len out – not that she had been far from her side all night – and owned to feeling unwell. “Can you help me to our room, Len? I’m not very well…think I’ve had a bit too much to drink. Curse open bar!” she grinned. Len immediately assisted Jennie up to their room and into the bathroom. Jennie insisted that she would be fine and that Len should rejoin the Ball. “No, I’ll stay here and nurse you. Besides, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy myself, knowing how you’re feeling.” However, Jennie insisted Len leave her alone in the bathroom for a minute. As the door closed, she grinned. Stone-cold sober, she’d made sure Len had had enough to drink to enjoy herself, and to let her inhibitions go. Jennie had worried she was being devious, but assured herself that she needed to do this to help Len to realise the truth about herself – and about Jennie.

She made the appropriate sounds, waited long enough, then entered the main room. Len was perched on the king-size bed. Jennie sat down beside her. “I’m sorry, Len, I’ve ruined your evening,” she half-whispered, still feigning nausea.

The reply came, slow and gentle. “Not at all, Jennie. I have had the best time in ages – I don’t know when I last felt so happy, or was able to let me just be me.”

Silence reigned for a minute. Jennie took Len’s hand. She tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come out. Then, suddenly, she moved forwards and kissed Len full on the mouth.

ummm, I would like to see more. Please!
I'm thinking that Jennie has underestimated the amount of alcohol it will take for Len to lose her inhibitions - but am dying to see what happens.
So have lots of praise, gentle persuasion etc - but please post more! Smile

Rosea...are you psychic, or do you have secret access to my computer? Shocked you're dead on.

At first, Len didn’t realise what was happening. Before she knew it, she was responding in kind. They lay backwards, still kissing. It was only a hand distinctly where it shouldn’t be that woke Len up.

“What the hell-?” she sat bolt upright, unable to take what was happening. “Jennie-“

Wisely, Jennie waited for Len to say her piece. Clearly, she had misjudged things.

“Jennie, what in the name of all that is sacred are you doing? I’m engaged – and so are you! And we – we’re – we’re both women!”

Seeing Len flabbergasted, Jennie responded quietly, “yes? It does happen, Len – didn’t you see how I felt – feel – about you?” “But-“ “The engagement, to Christopher? It’s solely there to protect my family’s, ah, reputation. Christopher’s too; he’s gay and so am I, so it allows us both to live our own lives without destroying those of our families.”

This was too much to take in. “I – I – what?”

“And as for me – well, you were hardly backward just then! Len, just admit how you feel. If not in words, then just let your feelings guide your actions.”

“I – Jennie – I – I don’t know, I mean – God, I didn’t even know I could feel that way! But I love Reg – I’m engaged to him – I can’t break that off!”

“Can’t you?”

Len coughed. “What will Mamma think?”

“Don’t you worry about anyone except you, Len. In anything. Sod everyone else – and that includes me, by the way – you have to find your own happiness and sod what anyone else thinks.”

Len reached for Jennie’s hand. “Jennie – I don’t know what I want. Can – can we be friends, and no more? I have to sort out my head before I go leaping into anything. I have to.” Jennie nodded, and rubbed Len’s back. “I know, honey. I know.”

Con woke early, with an inner glow. She stretched luxuriously in the bed, and turned over to face Tom. Except Tom wasn’t there. “Tom?” she called. “Are you in the bathroom?”

Silence. She decided to investigate. Padding over to the bathroom, she found it empty. It was only as she returned to bed that she saw a card propped by the lamp. Maybe it had been there before, she surmised. She’d hardly been paying attention to the décor of the room last night! Turning it over, she saw Tom’s neat, close hand. A sense of dread filled her.

‘Dear Con,
I’ve written this to give to you at the end of tonight. I don’t want to spoil your big evening, which is why I’m waiting till now to say anything. Remember, whatever happens, I love you. You have given me a new lease of life.
But we can’t go on. I can’t bear to see you hurt, but what I am going to say will sting. Con, you are the woman I love, and if only – if only it were possible! But Con, I’m married. It’s long since dead, but my wife won’t agree to a divorce. Which means I can’t be with you, Con sweetheart.
Your loving Tom.
PS: I’m truly sorry what happened last night happened. Well, I’m not – I’m glad it happened, but I’m so sorry because I fear it will hurt you even more. Tom xxxxx’

Con fainted.

The return journey from Oxford was as quiet as the outgoing one. Neither sister spoke much – only to ask for a magazine, or to enquire about meals. Arriving in Interlaken, Steve had no sooner picked them up than asked, “okay girls, what’s up?”

“Nothing,” they chorused.

“Crap,” he responded cheerfully. “Never mind, mother will get it out of you. She always does, even in her present state of health.”

‘That’s what I’m worried about,’ thought each girl miserably.

I shouldn't be laughing but I am! What a bad night - and how much like dances always seem to be at varsity, packed with things it would have been more peaceful not to know/do!

OK, but I DO have a lot of sympathy with Len and Con though - two very difficult situations to actually have to be in. Is this a novel way of shifting Reg or has it been done before? And I know Jennie is conniving, but... would she get her way any other way?

Arriving on the Platz, each sister separately steeled herself for what was to come. As they left Steve’s car, they stood for a minute, looking at the house. Unconsciously, they reached for each other’s hand, taking comfort in knowing that their sister was here – all the more so, because Margot was not to join them. She had decided to spend Christmas at a convent near the university, ‘to reflect on the meaning of Christmas.’

Entering the house, Len and Con encountered the usual Christmas chaos, except that this year was worse, because their mother had invited half the Platz to stay – or so it seemed, anyway. Joey waved at her eldest daughters from the top of the Christmas tree – well, the ladder next to the Christmas tree. Something she should definitely not be doing, surmised Len, looking at the unmistakeable bump. Seeing their mother occupied, Len and Con had identical reactions. “I’m so tired, I think I might just go to bed now,” said Con Len simply nodded and followed her sister up the stairs.

*** *** ***

Len managed to avoid Reg for exactly a week. One morning, he appeared on the doorstep at Freudesheim and refused to leave until Len came to him. Six hours later, Len came to the realization that he really wasn’t going to leave. She came to the door jamb and spoke his name.

“Len!” he said, springing up and turning. “Here, you are at last!” He moved to kiss her, but Len stepped back and turned her head. Reg’s kiss landed on her ear. Perplexed, he asked, “what’s wrong, darling? What’s happened? And why didn’t you write?”

“I – oh, Reg, I don’t know,” muttered Len, utterly miserable. “It’s just – I don’t know, and it’s so frustrating!”

Reg looked straight at her, for once in his life being sensitive to what was happening. “Can you tell me, sweetheart? I promise I won’t be angry with you.” Len struggled for a minute or so, then shook her head vehemently. “I can’t,” she whispered. “Alright dearest, I won’t push you into telling me anything. But I do know there’s something major here, so I’m going to ask you something. Len, I will only ask you these questions once. I want you to answer me yes or no – none of this ‘I don’t know’ business. At this moment, do you want to remain engaged, with the knowledge that this is not necessarily a final decision – meaning we can become engaged again?” Len stood there, dumbfounded. Eventually she raised her eyes to Reg’s and shook her head. Reg showed no outward emotion. “Do you still love me?” Len nodded. Reg exhaled slowly. This was something, at least. “This is what I suggest. We don’t say anything to your mother, but speak to your father – I just have a feeling your mother will take this very emotionally and get the wrong idea. We can leave your dad to tell her after you’ve returned to Oxford. We will quietly break off the engagement for the moment, and I release you from any restraints you might put upon yourself merely on my account. You can even see other men if you want. But when you are ready to make a definite and firm decision about us, let me know and either I will come to Oxford, or you here. Then we can make a final decision. Is this okay with you?” Len nodded again, tears in her eyes as she realised how self-sacrificing Reg really was. She hugged him fiercely. “Thank you,” she whispered. Reg just hugged her tighter.

*** *** ***

Con surveyed the scene below her. She hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but she couldn’t help feeling for her triplet. So she watched, feeling for each of them as things unfolded.

Seeing Len depart tearfully, she rushed down the stairs and caught her sister in her arms. “Len – honey – come on. Let’s get out of here.”

Len followed her sister automatically, thinking of the last person to call her ‘honey.’

They came to a bench near St. Cécilie and sat. “I saw,” said Con. “Maybe you couldn’t tell Reg, but something’s happened. And – correct me if I’m wrong – it’s happened since the Ball.”

Len nodded her head. “You’re right, Con, but I – I can’t, it’s too much.”

“Too much for what? For you to bear? I will share your burden, Len. Too much for me to take? Let’s say I’ve grown up a lot since my disastrous comments in Freshers’ week. Too complicated? Maybe it’ll help to try and say some of it – things make much more sense out of your mouth than inside. And whatever it is, I promise not to say ‘I told you so.’” She reached an arm around Len and waited.

Finally, the words came spilling out, sometimes in an irregular drip, others in an absolute torrent. By the time all had come out, Len was exhausted.

Con hugged Len and didn’t say anything. Silence reigned, but it was different – warmth permeated, rather than coldness and an impending sense of disaster. “Con? Don’t – you hate me?” Len whispered.

Con couldn’t hug any tighter, but stayed where she was. “How could I hate you, Len? You’re my sister. I love you. You have been the bravest woman I know. Honestly!” she continued, as incredulous eyes were raised to meet her own pools of ink. “You are actually confronting this instead of running away from it. Len, I – I know this is nigh-on impossible right now, but can you tell me how you feel?”

“Like my world has just self-destructed. I’ve lost Reg, I’ve lost Jennie, I –” She trailed off.

“You have not lost Reg. He loves you with all his heart – so much, he’s willing to let you go if that makes you happy. And if you want him, he will be ecstatic. I don’t know Jennie very well, so I can’t say the same about her. But I know that whoever you end up with, they will be the luckiest person in the world.”

“Con, I do know one thing. I love Jennie very much, but – not in that way. Will she understand?” “She’d better,” said Con, “or she’ll have me to deal with.”

Len changed tack. “So what’s up with you?” Con sighed. “Tom.”

“Oh.”

“Yes, ‘oh.’ Seems like the Ball was a turning point for us, too. Well, not so much a turning point, more of an end-of-the-line.” It was Len’s turn to offer silent support. Choking out what had happened, Con finally succumbed to the tears that had refused to come for two solid weeks.

“Mamma, where’s Con?”

Thus Felicity. The whole family was going shopping in Interlaken just before the new term, and Felicity was desperate to get her new pointe shoes.

“I don’t know. Len, would you fetch her down?” Len did as she was bidden, but on nearing Con’s room heard sounds from the nearest bathroom. She opened the door. Con had been too overcome to lock the door as she came flying in.

Len, practical as ever, lifted Con’s plaits behind her face. When Con had emptied her stomach, Len helped her clean herself up and took Con to her room. Ignoring Con’s protests, she relieved Con of her nightdress and laid out fresh clothing. When Con had dressed, Len insisted on brushing her sister’s unruly hair. She opened Con’s top drawer, located some outrageously dark blusher, and applied the lightest touch to Con’s cheeks. “Now you don’t look such a washout,” she observed. “Tummy bug?”

“I don’t think so,” said Con, “I’ve been sick two mornings in a row, but it cleared up yesterday.”

“Okay, you get yourself a book and stay up here till the family has disappeared off to Interlaken. You and me will have an easygoing day.” Len disappeared to tell her mother, who was none too pleased, their plans.

Jack came home early that day, hoping to enjoy a quiet pipe before his mob of a family descended on the house. To his surprise, he found Len and Con in the Saal. One look at Con was all it took. “Con, come with me,” he said, “something’s wrong.”

Con’s heart sank. Something inside her told her the sickness was not just a bug, or stress. Her father got straight to the point. “Con, I haven’t liked the colour of you the whole time you’ve been here. Will you let me examine you?” She nodded dumbly. Nothing was turned up, however, and Con was forced to own to her sickness. Jack looked at her as she described it, but just at that moment the phone rang. As her father answered it, Con took the opportunity to escape the study and hide in her room.

*** *** ***

Two days later saw Len and Con returning to Oxford. Con – still pale as a ghost – couldn’t wait to get away from her father, who knew something – she was sure. Con was sick almost the entire journey back to Oxford, worrying Len – Con had never been particularly travel sick! By the time they arrived in Oxford, Con was dry-retching, and Len took her sister over to the hospital. She was sorted out with a drip, and the doctors took her in for some tests. After a short while, the charge nurse came out.

“Er – Len Maynard?” Len stood up. “Would you like to come through and see your sister? She’s a little dehydrated at the moment, and we’re a little concerned for the baby, but Con is doing fine otherwise. We’ve got her on a few machines to keep an eye on her heart rate and so on.” Len was shown through to resus. Halfway across A&E, she stopped dead.

“What did you just say?” she demanded of the charge nurse. “Baby, what baby?”

“You knew your sister was pregnant?” As Len glowered at the charge nurse, his eyes widened in horror. “Um, yes, well, here she is,” he said, disappearing as fast as his feet could carry him.

Len pulled the screens over, even though it wouldn’t do much to keep things private, and sat down on the seat next to Con. She was so intent, she didn’t even notice how horribly uncomfortable it was.

“Con?”

Con turned her head, unseeing eyes on Len. She looked like she’d been hit by a bomb. In a way, she had. She was too drowsy to speak, though she tried, and she soon slipped into unconscious oblivion. Machines started beeping around her. Suddenly, the space around the bed was crowded with nurses and doctors and Len was shoved unceremoniously out of the way. A nurse who had been with another patient showed Len to the relatives’ room and got her a cup of coffee. Poor Len couldn’t even hold it, she was shaking so badly. She started to panic.

“Why won’t they tell me anything? What’s happening with my sister? You have to tell me!” she cried to the nurse. The nurse grabbed a hold of Len’s wrists and looked at her straight on. The sudden movement jerked Len out of her hysteria. “Miss Maynard, I don’t know what’s happening, but if you promise me you will sit down and not go anywhere I will go and find out for you now. If you continue to panic, we’ll have to treat you as well as your sister, and as you can see, we’re pretty busy tonight without having to deal with extra and unnecessary cases.” Len sank down into the nearest seat and sat there, silent, staring at the magnolia wall in front of her.

Ten minutes later, the nurse returned. Ten minutes which had seemed like ten hours. She brought with her a man in a suit, who introduced himself as “Dr. Barton, A&E consultant.” They sat down.

“Miss Maynard, I know you’re worried about your sister. Let me reassure you that she is alive, and she is going to be fine. She wasn’t getting enough oxygen in, so we’ve got her on a ventilator at the moment, which is just giving her more oxygen than is in normal air. Of course, there’s the drip. The trouble is, she’s had a hemorrhage, which is putting the baby in danger. We aren’t sure if we can detect a heartbeat or not. Because of the hemorrage, she’ll need a blood transfusion, so we’ll start that very soon. Is there a husband we can contact for Con?”

Len responded automatically, “no, he-he isn’t available. I’m her next-of-kin in this country, since my parents are in Switzerland, at the Görnetz Platz.”

“I thought you girls looked familiar – you both have the look of your father. Okay, in that case we can move straight away. As soon as Con is stable, we will move her to one of the gynaecological wards. She will need careful watching for the time being. Now, Miss Maynard, is there anyone you would like to contact? We have a hospital phone for all calls relating to admissions.”

Len looked at her watch. Too late to call Switzerland – or was it? She accepted the offer and was shown to a tiny, private room with a table, chair and telephone. She thought for a moment, then called the San. She was sure Father was on nights at the moment.

True enough, Len was right. She kept very general about what had happened, simply saying that Con was in hospital and was being looked after and that she would be fine. Her voice must have betrayed her feelings, however, because Jack said, “now tell me what’s really going on.”

“Pappa, I – I just did.” Len sighed, there was no fooling a medical man of thirty years’ experience. “Con kept being sick on the train, and was dry-retching by the time we got here, so I brought her to hospital. She’s stopped being sick now, but she needs rehydrating. So that’s what they’re doing. Because it takes time to do, she’s being kept in overnight. Oh, and she’s on a ventilator – because she had been so sick, she was having trouble getting enough oxygen in. Again, that’s just for the time being.” Jack decided this was all he was going to get out of his daughter for the time being, wished her a good night, and hung up. He rested his face in his hands for a minute, and called England. He was determined to find out what was going on.

Back in Oxford, Len was overwhelmed with tenseness. She could have told her Father, but – She reached once again for the receiver, and dialled Jennie’s London address.

All fabulous though!

Poor Con! It may seem that she should have known what was going on but 'nice' girls didn't in the late 50's and early 60's.

I can remember discussions and rumours at school about how you got pregnant. We knew about rabbits and frogs and so on but it was too big a leap to tranlate that to humans! Fortunately my Mum was somewhat ahead of her time but some girls weren't so lucky.

When it was introduced in the UK in 1961 it was prescribed for married women only. Lots of doctors wouldn't prescribe it as it was 'against nature' - don't know how they squared that with all the other things they prescribed?

LOL at your description of sex education PatMac. Ours was just as bad. We did know to stay well away from newts, though.

Sex Ed hadn't improved in some schools but the 1990s we were shown a couple splashing in the sea and then in the next scene they had a baby - we thought you got pregnant from paddling!!

A program that included rabbits and frogs would have been advanced compared to ours, which never got beyond amoebae in terms of reproduction! We did eventually have some lectures on what glands produce what hormones during the menstrual cycle, but the closest it got to the concept of pregnancy was the news that this would eventually be important to make a comfy home for baby. No practical advice whatsoever, and a year or two late if their objective was to make the "help, I'm bleeding to death" moment less stressful. But even this much was considered controversial, with some parents lobbying the legislature against, etc. Can't imagine what would have happened if male involvement in reproduction were implied! (No idea what the boys heard during this exercise, as we were carefully segregated by gender for the purpose.)

I went to an all-girls' school. The worst of it was, our Sex ed was carried out by the female Chairman of Governors who was a doctor by profession.

More lovely story, thank you.

Don't remember much of our Sex Ed - except it seemed to be mostly about rats and plants (seperatly).

I do remember being taken (after much discussion) to a film for teenagers fearuring a baby being born and the whole school year of us taken to see it came out saying we would never have children.

Kirsty, I've just read this from start to finish, and it's absolutely fantastic! Slightly worried about Len calling Jennie however - maybe Len does want to explore some of the feelings that Jennie brought up, but not with that person! She's a bit of a manipulative cow in my opinion (which is oh so flattering Very Happy)

Thank you!!!

I've just caught up with this drabble. I was really enjoying until we ended up in hospital (?John Radcliffe?) and I want to read the rest. Please Kirsty what happens next?

Great! My first "real life" chalet drabble, and can we pleeeeease have some more? Only when you're ready, of course, we wouldn't want the PBs to overheat or something.

What a horrendous thought. Little pbs melting and sizzling all over the place. Quite distressed now.
