Over in the School, news of Con’s condition reached them halfway through the evening. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson had joined the rest of the Staff in the Staff Room. They had passed on the grave news earlier and now, having seen the School to bed, sat drinking coffee and chatting softly. When the Head’s mobile rang, a little after nine, everyone fell silent. Miss Annersley’s expression didn’t change as she listened to the voice on the other end. When she ended the conversation she looked round, the entire Staff Room was silent, awaiting her response. Miss Annersley sought out her Deputy, Nell was sat with dark, almost haunted eyes, Miss Annersley smiled.

“Con Mackenzie seems to be improving,” she said gently, “It seems, rather than have respiratory failure, her lungs were collapsing due to the pneumonia. It’s a known complication of the disease. The medical personnel have inserted chest drains into each lung. These allow the air trapped in the chest but outside the lung to escape, the lung will then re-inflate automatically.” She looked over at Nell Wilson once more, and was rewarded by seeing her friend smile and quickly brush a small tear from her eye.

Later that night, as the two were sat in their sitting room over in their cottage, the Head was puzzled to receive a number of almost embarrassed glances from her friend. She put down her book and looked over, “What is it, Nell?” she asked.

Nell Wilson said nothing for a time, obviously struggling to find the words, eventually she took a deep breath and spoke, “My friendship with Con, you’ve never said anything about it.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, that I was close friends with her, until she and Jock were married. That our friendship, yours and mine, only developed properly then. I wouldn’t want you to think…”

Hilda smiled, she got up and walked over to kneel beside her friend, “Nell Wilson, I’ve no idea what you are trying to say,” she said firmly, “But let me put your mind at rest, I have no problem with the fact that you were friendly toward Con in the early days. We, both of us, needed time for our friendship to grow. And now, well I count Con as a dear friend of mine too. It would be very boring for both of us if our friendship was so all exclusive. We need to have other friends too.”

The Head stood up and smiled down at her friend, “Now, before this gets any more sentimental, how about a cup of tea?”

Nell smiled, “OK Hilda,” she said, “That’ll be fine.”

The two sat in silent companionship, drinking their tea. The mood was suddenly shattered though when the telephone rang. Hilda answered it, after only a few sentences she replaced the receiver. “That was Nancy Chester,” she said grimly, “She’s just been called to see three girls in one of the Middle blocks, they are all showing signs of flu.”

Over the next few days, the news given to the Head by Nancy Chester got progressively worse. To begin with, it had been hoped that the infection could be confined to the Middles, the nurse had immediately isolated those who were infected in the sick bay. However, within hours others of the students also became ill. The infection was not restricted to the girls, a number of the domestic Staff also succumbed, those who lived off-site obviously passing on the infection to members of their families. Teaching Staff were not immune, a large number of those that had travelled to the UK for the holidays were ill, however it was not confined solely to them. On the third day after the first case, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson appeared at breakfast to find a much reduced number of students and Staff, as well as the girls affected, a large percentage of the Staff were missing, including Nancy Wilmot and Kathie Ferrars.

Miss Derwent spoke to the Head, “Nancy called me, Hilda,” she said quietly, “She said that Kathie’s been up most of the night coughing, and that she’s running a temperature and feels dreadful. I told them to stay put.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Good advice, thank you for telling me. I’ll ask Nancy Chester if she’ll call upon them sometime this morning, just to check that they are comfortable. How about you, Ruth, do you feel unwell?”

Miss Derwent shook her head, “I feel fine,” she said, “But fully half the Staff are down with it now, it’s going to make teaching difficult.”

Miss Wilson leant across, “More than half the students also have it,” she said, “Plus those that are day pupils have been advised to stay at home. The classes are all affected, Hilda, we’ll need to do something to reorganize.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “I’ll announce a free period first thing,” she said, “Those of us still fit will hold a Staff Meeting – we can reorganize classes and try to ensure that everyone that is still fit has at least some of the education they are paying for!”

The Staff Meeting was held and a significant re-organisation was made, a number of classes were amalgamated to allow those Staff still healthy to continue to teach. Following the meeting, Miss Annersley moved back to her Study to try and catch up with some paperwork. Miss Dene was, herself, unwell and Gill and Clare were having to put in a number of extra hours to try and keep up with the administrative side of the School. Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson were helping by taking on more of the routine paperwork.

A quiet knock on the door interrupted the Head, calling out for the person to enter, Miss Annersley looked up to see Mrs Phillips, the Nursery Mistress, “Hilda, is it alright to speak to you?”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Of course, Carolyn,” she said, “Come in, sit down.” She waited until the other woman had settled then continued, “You look worried, Carolyn, can I help?”

“I’ve just had a call from Darren,” Carolyn replied, “He has this flu, so have the children.”

“I see,” Miss Annersley replied, “Well you’d better get off home then, hadn’t you? They’ll need you to look after them.”

Carolyn smiled, “Are you sure it’s not too much trouble?” she said quickly, “I mean there are four Nursery boarders, and it looks as though all of them will be going down with the flu.”

“You let me worry about that, Carolyn,” the Head smiled, “We’ll manage!”

Yuk yuk yuk. Even when it isn't flu superbugs, an epidemic like thawt is a nightmare in boarding schools- witness Does It Again! Also when my year were in £rd form, there was a bad flu epidemic, and again when I was in Lower Sixth. Like RCS, more than half of the school and staff were down and dear knows how many teacher families were affected! I do know one member of carestaff who managed to get it three times because she had to help nurse the kids. I thought that wasn't supposed to be possible!

More soon please Lesley!

Kathye - no, I don't come into the 'at risk' catagory!
Vikki - no by a roundabout set of traffic lights totally out of sinc!

Miss Annersley continued smiling until after the relieved Nursery Mistress had left, then her face darkened slightly, as far as she was aware there was no one that could be spared to look after four babies. Making a quick decision she reached for the telephone and paged Nancy Chester, the Nurse carried a pager as her duties took her all over the School. When she answered the page Miss Annersley asked that she join her in the Study. It was barely ten minutes later that there was a discreet knock at the door. “Come in, Nancy.” Miss Annersley said quickly.

The Nurse entered the room, to Miss Annersley’s private amusement Miss Chester appeared to be feeling exceptionally guilty about something, and was approaching the Head with an almost schoolgirl reluctance. Miss Annersley allowed none of her amusement to show, instead indicating one of the chairs at her oval table, “Sit down Nancy,” she ordered softly, “I’m making coffee, would you like a cup?”

“Er, yes, thank you, that’ll be fine Miss Annersley.” Nancy said, somewhat startled.

The Head swiftly made the coffees and placed them on the table, along with a biscuit barrel. She sat in one of the chairs opposite the nurse, looking at Nancy’s face she chuckled slightly. “Forgive me, my dear, but you look as though you are awaiting Judgement!”

Nancy Chester smiled, “I’m sorry, Miss Annersley,” she began, “Even though it was a long time ago, I cannot prevent the image of myself as a schoolgirl having to report myself to your Study for punishment!”

“It didn’t happen that often, Nancy,” Miss Annersley smiled.

Nancy returned the smile, “It happened enough to leave an indelible mark! I transferred over to the Real World some twenty-five years ago, and I think my apparent age is now older than yours, but it makes no difference. I am still quaking whenever I have to go to the Head’s Study!”

Miss Annersley sipped her drink, “Well, let’s see what I can do to make you feel more at ease,” she thought for a moment, “to begin with, then, I’m not so formal as when part of the original school. Away from the students please use my Christian name, that might help and I promise that I’ll not lecture!”

Miss Chester smiled and also sipped her drink, “Thank you Hilda, I’ll try to remember!” she said softly, “Now, I gather you wanted an update?”

The next fifteen minutes were spent discussing the current situation with regard to the Flu Epidemic within the School. At the end of it Miss Annersley related her concerns about the four Nursery pupils. The Nurse considered, “It’s always a problem when very young children become unwell, especially if some of their symptoms include nausea or worse. They can so easily become dehydrated. I stopped in on the Kindergarten Boarding House this morning; I think Carolyn Phillips is quite correct; all four are in the first stages of infection. I’ll have a word with Daisy, she may be able to help out – I’d rather not have to admit the babes if at all possible.”

Well that had already been shown in Surfeit with Thekla/Theresa Hanson.
Little bit for now - more later.

The next day was exceptionally busy, as more people succumbed to the illness it placed more strain on those deemed healthy. Nancy Chester had spoken with the Medical Director at length; Daisy had been able to help. Sending along one of the younger hospital nurses, someone with experience of nursing young children. She had quickly converted a dormitory into a sick bay for the four three year olds. News from the hospital continued to be good as far as Con Mackenzie was concerned; she was very weak but slowly recovering. Jock had contacted Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson that evening to update them. After chatting for a few minutes to both women he asked them to wait a moment. The next voice they heard was rather a surprise.

“Hello…Nell, hello Hilda…bet you…didn’t expect…to hear from me…again!” The voice was very laboured and breathless, but unmistakably that of Con Mackenzie.

“Con!” Nell Wilson’s shout could not mask her pleasure,

“It’s good to at least hear from you, Con,” Hilda’s reply was a little more measured, “How are you feeling?”

“As though…someone was…trying…to crush my chest…by standing...on it, Hilda, I…swear that they …are still…trying!” even through the obvious pain and discomfort Con’s amusement could be heard.

“You idiot, Con!” Nell’s voice was rather thick, “Why didn’t you see someone about your chest before?”

“Because…Nell, I’m…almost as stu…bborn as…you are!” There was the sound of Con laughing and then coughing, a short time later Con came back on the phone, “The nurse is…giving me a…look, I’ll…have to go. Speak…to you later.”

#548:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Wed Nov 03, 2004 9:19 pm

What do you think, Vikki? Wink

The following morning saw Nancy Chester giving another update, “The situation appears to be slowing a little,” she said carefully, “We are still getting new cases, but they have reduced in number. If the trend continues like this I would say that, in a week, there will be no more new cases and we’ll just be mopping up.”

“What about those who are already ill?” The Head asked quickly.

“Well because of the vaccination programme most of those deemed ‘at risk’ have been saved. However four of the girls and two Staff who were vaccinated have developed the disease.”

“The vaccination gave them the flu?” This from Miss Wilson.

Nancy shook her head, “No, that’s not possible,” she said, “But it’s likely that they were already harbouring the disease before they were vaccinated, or that they have just had a very mild dose – no vaccination is one hundred percent effective.”

“Have we any people who are seriously ill?” Miss Annersley asked.

“Kathie Ferrars has had a very bad bout, but she hasn’t developed any complications. It’s likely she will need a couple of weeks off to recuperate. We have three First Formers that needed to be taken to hospital because of dehydration, but I spoke to the Sister of the ward first thing, they are all fine.”

Miss Wilson turned to her friend, “Are we still banned from visiting the hospital, Hilda?”

The Head nodded, “Yes, I spoke to Daisy last night, she doesn’t want any movement from School to Hospital unless strictly necessary. Madge rang though, she’s been in to see the three girls, they all seem to be doing fine. I’ve kept their parents informed – two of them are from England, while the third is from Cairns, they have been in contact with their daughters.”

“Well otherwise we seem to have been free from any serious complications,” Nancy Chester continued, “Probably because everyone knew to report symptoms straight away and rest immediately.” She stood up to leave when a query from Nell Wilson stopped her.

“What about the Nursery children? I gather that they’ve been rather unwell?”

“No complications, as such,” the Nurse replied, “But that poor kid from the hospital has had a time of it! She’s been with them non-stop for the last 48 hours!”

Later that morning the two Heads decided to call in to say hello to the nurse looking after the three year olds. Nancy Chester had told them that they were not allowed to enter the room, or to touch the children, but they felt that the least they could do was offer moral support. At the Kindergarten Boarding House they walked up to the first floor and called ahead. A very frazzled voice replied that they could come in, but to remain behind the red line on the floor.

Entering the room both women were immediately aware of specific odours. In any sick room the smell of sickness and disease were apparent, but this seemed to be more than that. Without even being aware that they knew the identity of the odours, both women were able to detect both vomit and faeces.

“Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, how good of you to come,” the voice was that of a young woman in a rather stained nurse’s uniform. “Don’t come any closer, you don’t want to catch this strain.”

Miss Annersley smiled, “It’s Kat Wilkie isn’t it?” she asked, “You poor girl, having to cope with this on your own.”

“Have the kids got food poisoning or something?” Miss Wilson could be forgiven for thinking this, as it was obvious that all four had severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

“No, this is another way that this flu can show up,” Kat said, “It’s just unfortunate that all four of them are only babies and need someone to look after them.” Kat gave a slight smile, “I’m sure I got this duty because of some terrible wrong that I performed in a previous existence,” she said with a half-smile on her lips, “It’s the only reason I can think of for why I’m being punished like this!”

At this moment there was the sound of running feet and one of the babies came over to her,

“Miss, Miss, I think I’m going to be…” his voice tailed off as the little boy suddenly brought up a huge quantity of fluid, the ejecta splattered into the nurse’s hair and face and down her front. Picking up the little boy to soothe his tears, Kat turned to the two other women, “Whatever it was, it must have been dreadful,” she said with an air of resignation.

Over the next few days the situation at the Real Chalet School stabilised, there were still people succumbing to the disease, but, as everyone was reporting it straight away, they were more likely to look after themselves and could be checked out by Nancy Chester and her team. The Staff, Seniors and some of the Middles were able to mainly look after themselves, although they were still checked, the main work came from the Juniors and Kindergarten. For all of these, aged between 3 and 10, careful nursing was required to ensure that the children had enough fluids, a major problem was dehydration.

By the time more than a week had passed from when the first people had become ill, the Real Chalet School was starting to recover, certainly some of those who had been the first to fall sick, were well enough to at least try to return to School or work, albeit being a little shakily. Con Mackenzie continued to make good progress in hospital, although still unwell she was slowly recovering, and Daisy was able to report that, all being well, she would be moved to a normal ward in a few days time.

Also good news was that, due to the weather, the influenza epidemic had not spread to the community as a whole. Instead it was restricted to the School and hospital.No-one else had been as severe as Con, and the few girls that had been hospitalised would be well enough to be discharged in a day or two.

Out for their normal run one morning, Miss Wilson remarked that the crisis seemed to be over, “While it’s not been pleasant, Hilda,” she said quickly, “It could have been a lot worse. Just goes to show there are some things that never occurred in the fictional world - air travel was too awkward and expensive. It’s only now, with everywhere so much closer, that the risks from disease are greater.”

There was silence for a time, Miss Wilson looked across, “Hilda? Are you alright?”

Miss Annersley turned to her partner, “Yes of course, Nell,” she smiled, “Just finding I need all my breath for running, seem very unfit this morning.”

“You’re not unwell, are you?” Nell Wilson was suddenly worried.

“No, I just didn’t sleep very well, that’s all!” The Head turned to her partner, “And anyway, we can’t afford for any more Staff to go off.”

“Mmmmm,” Miss Wilson didn’t sound too convinced.

“I’m fine, Nell,” Hilda Annersley smiled, “I promise!”

With that the Deputy Head had to be content, although she kept a close eye on her friend for the rest of their run. Miss Annersley appeared to have recovered her breath because, on the last hundred yards, the part they always sprinted, she managed to finish before Miss Wilson.

During breakfast and Assembly there was nothing to show that Miss Annersley was anything other than perfectly fit, and Miss Wilson started the morning lessons feeling fairly happy. At the end of the morning she had a lesson with the Fifth, the two years had been amalgamated due to the flu crisis and she spent the lesson revising common topics expected in the exams. The lesson went well and, when the bell for the end of the morning went, she dismissed everyone with a smile. As she was tidying up in the Lab the door opened and Louise Chad looked in.

“Miss Wilson, do you have a minute?”

“Of course Louise, what is it?”

“We’ve just had double English Lit with the Head,” she began, “Is she OK?”

Miss Wilson looked round sharply, “What do you mean, OK?”

Louise hesitated, “To begin with, she was fine, but as the lesson went on, she seemed…odd. Almost as though she was having difficulty remembering things. I don’t think any of the others noticed, except Alison and myself.”

“But you would be most likely to notice,” Miss Wilson said softly, “Thanks Louise, I did wonder if something was wrong first thing, but she seemed to recover. I’ll watch her closely over lunch.”

During lunch Miss Wilson watched her friend closely and, noting that she was rather pale, asked how she was, Miss Annersley admitted to a slight headache, but denied anything else was wrong. After the meal Miss Annersley disappeared back to her Study as she had a free period. Miss Wilson, concerned about her friend, stopped one of the Staff.

“Lesley, I’ve got the Fourths for Chemistry this period, could you arrange for someone to sit with them? I’m going to be busy.”

The Earth Sciences Mistress smiled, “I’ll sit with them myself, Nell, I’m free at the moment. Are you going to check on Hilda?”

Miss Wilson looked over, “Might have guessed you’d have picked up on that,” she said with a slight smile, “Yes, I think Hilda’s unwell and is trying to hide it.. Thanks.” She waved before quickly walking across to the Admin Block. Reaching her own Study she quietly entered and walked over to the connecting door. She opened the door silently and looked in.

Miss Annersley sat at her desk, a pile of essays in front of her. She had her left elbow on the desk and was supporting her head with her hand. Her eyes were half closed as she continued to read through and mark the essays. Miss Wilson made a slight noise and Miss Annersley looked up sharply. Her head immediately jerking up and her eyes alert.

“Nell,” the Head’s voice did not sound as rich as normal, “I didn’t hear you knock!” There was a hint of rebuke in her tone.

Miss Wilson walked across to stand opposite her friend, “That’s because I didn’t.” she said flatly, “Because I wanted to see you when you were not trying to hide your condition.”

“Hide my condition? I’ve no idea what you’re talking about, Nell.” Miss Annersley smiled across at her friend, and only someone that knew her very well would have seen that she was trying very hard to appear normal.

The Deputy Head walked over to stand next to her friend and stretched out a hand to place on Miss Annersley’s forehead. “Hilda, you’re burning up,” she said softly, “You’re forehead is red hot, you hardly ate anything at lunch, and you’re moving like an old woman.” Miss Wilson smiled down at her friend, “And if it were anyone else I’ll bet that your ‘slight headache’ would be referred to as a severe one! Even with your high pain threshold to headaches, it’s obvious that you’re in a lot of pain.”

Miss Annersley made no attempt to refute any of her friend’s statement, instead smiling slightly, “I can manage, Nell, you shouldn’t worry.”

“Oh I’m not worried, Hilda,” Miss Wilson returned the smile, “Because I’m sending you home to bed, right now! You’ve got this ‘flu, and the only place for you is bed!”

Miss Annersley shook her head gingerly, “Nell, that is not necessary, I have a cold, no more, I don’t require bed.”

Miss Wilson suppressed a sigh, “Hilda, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. Now the easy way is that you let me help you across to our cottage and see you snug in bed, where you’ll stay for the next two or three days…”

“I’ve already said, that’s not necessary!” The Head interrupted.

“Or,” Miss Wilson said, her voice over-riding that of her friend and, incidentally, causing Miss Annersley to wince, she lowered her voice, “Or we wait until the girls are all out on their Break and I twist your arm up behind your back and frogmarch you over there in front of all of them!”

Miss Annersley swallowed, “You wouldn’t!” she said faintly.

Miss Wilson grinned.

*Shakes head sorrowfully at Kat's comments.*

There was silence for some time then,

“That could be construed as assault, Nell,”

“Yes Hilda,”

“And blackmail,”

“Yes Hilda,”

“And it’s most definitely bullying, using the fact that you are stronger than I,”

“Yes Hilda,” Miss Wilson’s grin had not moved while she was agreeing with her friend.

“And I suppose that any retribution I might make will not change your mind?”

“No Hilda, I quite fancy being Staff Baby again, should be fun!”

The Head smiled, “I don’t really have a choice then, do I?”

Miss Wilson considered, “Well you have, Hilda, but knowing your sense of dignity, I’d not recommend it!”

Miss Annersley sighed, “Oh very well,” she said, “Help me pack up this work then, Nell.” She turned to smile at her friend, “I must admit, I do feel terrible!”

“Rosalind Moore speaking,”

“Hello Ros, you sound a little better than the last time I phoned,”

“Geoff! Is everything alright? Is Kelly OK?” Miss Moore sat up straight from where she had been lounging on her sofa, recovering from her bout of flu.

“Everything’s fine, woman, will you stop panicking!” Geoff Stevens’ voice was very amused, “I’m sure when you were first pointed out to me it was said that you were very calm.”

“Well I’ve been ill, and I’ve never had to worry about people like this before!” Rosalind said quietly, relaxing back into her seat and sipping some of her coffee, “I feel a cold fist clench my stomach whenever I consider that you or Kelly might be ill.”

“Exactly how I felt when Ruth rang the other day to say you’d got this flu.” Geoff replied softly, “it might not be the flu, Rosalind Moore, but I’ve definitely caught something from associating with you!”

“Ah, well I think, whatever that is, it’s more infectious than this flu,” Ros replied with a smile, “because I’ve got that too! Is Kelly there?”

“She is, hang on,”

There was a short break then Kelly Stevens’ voice was heard, “Hello Rosalind, are you better now?”

Ros smiled, “Much better, Kelly. The Nurse says I’ll be fit to return to work in a day or two, it wasn’t a very severe bout, not like Miss Ferrars.”

“When can we see you?”

“Not until Dr Venables lifts the quarantine, Kelly, and it’ll probably be at least another week, we’ve still got people going down with the infection.”

“Well let us know straight away, won’t you?” Kelly's voice sounded very serious, “We’ve missed you!”

“I’ve missed both of you, too.”

In the Staff Room that evening, those of the Staff not ill themselves or helping out with looking after the sick pupils, gathered for a well-deserved break. Mlle de Lachennais watched as Nancy Chester came in to the room, looking for someone, then prepared to leave almost immediately. She went to stand in front of her actually stopping her from leaving,

“Cherie, Nancy, you must stop, give yourself some time,” Jeanne de Lachennais smiled, “Come, we have had no time to catch up with you, surely you can spare us twenty minutes?”

The Nurse wavered, then, as the French woman handed her a cup of coffee she smiled, “Alright, Mlle, I mean Jeanne, for one of your coffees I’d do anything!” She sat in one corner of the Staff Room, sipping her coffee.

Some of the other Staff noticed her presence and gathered round, “Er, Nancy? Could you tell us what happened to you?” It was Peggy Burnett who spoke, “Last time I can remember seeing you was sometime in the early Swiss Years.”

“It was ‘Coming of Age’ I think,” put in Pat Willimott, “You were on sick leave from your hospital.”

Nancy smiled, “Yes, I suddenly discovered that I’d had an acute appendicitis!” she said, “Must admit it was rather a surprise to me!”

“So did you transfer over fairly soon after that then?” Jeanne asked.

“I think so, at least, from what I’ve been able to work out I must have left the fictional world within a year or so of the Coming of Age.”

“But that was around the early 1950’s, at least it was set then, you should be much older.” Rachel Grey said, somewhat puzzled.

Nancy shook her head, “I transferred into the year 1981, bit of a shock as I’m sure you can imagine! Suddenly jumping forward about thirty years. I mean, I knew it was fictional, Miss Annersley told all of us, in our final interview before leaving the School, sometimes earlier, but it took a while getting used to it!”

The others all laughed, “At least you had the cushion of your family’s money transferring with you,” Cathy Barber said quickly, “The Chesters’ were always supposed to be fairly well off.”

Nancy shook her head solemnly, “I didn’t have any money transfer over with me,” she said quietly. “I was lucky, when I transferred over I had been travelling to a friend’s house in Oxford. The friend and the house were not there, but a bookshop selling mint condition hardbacks of the Chalet School was. I realised what had happened within a few hours.”

“What did you do?”

“I’d been travelling in my brand new little car, thirty odd years later it was a collectors item, I managed to sell it, then enrolled myself on a nursing course as a mature student.”

The next day continued as before, the number of people still off-sick was slowly reducing as those who had fallen ill recovered,. Some pupils and Staff had been able to return to normal School life, and the number of new cases was now far less. There were however, still the exceptions. Miss Wilson hurried across to the cottage she shared with Miss Annersley. When she had left that morning the Head was sleeping; after being marched across to recover from the flu the previous day, Miss Annersley had gone to bed. The evening before she had surfaced only long enough to barely pick at a light meal the Deputy Head had cooked for her, before going back to bed to try and sleep. Miss Wilson didn’t think she had really succeeded. Certainly, the two or three times that Nell had awoken in the night, disturbed by the noise from the room next door, seemed to indicate a restless night.

She entered the cottage quietly, berating herself that she hadn’t asked Nancy Chester to look in on her friend. Miss Annersley had expressly stated that she didn’t need any help, that the nursing personnel were to be used to help the students. However, Miss Wilson considered, that was probably just Hilda’s sense of responsibility surfacing again. She walked upstairs, not surprised to see that her friend hadn’t surfaced, and gently knocked on her bedroom door. There was no reply so Miss Wilson opened the door slightly. The room was darkened as the curtains were still drawn, in the bed lay a slight form, still, unmoving.

Here you go then! And I stopped there because I hadn't linked the next part properly.

“Hilda? Are you awake Hilda?” Nell’s voice was soft.

The figure stirred, “I’m awake,” the reply was so quiet that Nell almost missed it. Hilda’s voice was rough and hoarse, a total contrast to her normal tones.

Nell swiftly moved to her friend’s bedside, “How are you feeling, Hilda?”

There was silence for a time, then Hilda replied, “Cold, really cold and I ache everywhere. Normal flu I expect. How is the School?”

Nell shook her head in disbelief, “You let me worry about the School, woman,” she said quickly, “Concentrate on getting well, that’s an order!”

There was a very slight, muffled, chuckle, “Cheek! You’re enjoying this, Nell Wilson.”

Nell laughed, “That’s right, and I intend to make the most of it.” She stopped exchanging banter with her friend as she noted that Hilda was shivering quite violently, “Are you cold, Hilda?” she began, “It’s warm out and…” Her hand touched Hilda’s forehead, “Damn it, Hilda! You’re boiling hot!”

“F-f-feel c-cold,” Hilda replied, as best she could, through chattering teeth.

For a moment Nell stood in indecision, she could see that Hilda was running a high temperature, yet she was shivering. Eventually she decided to act, walking swiftly into the spare bedroom, she stripped the duvet from the bed in there. Returning to Hilda she spread this on top of her friend, over her own duvet, and tucked it in.

“This’ll start to help soon, Hilda,” she said encouragingly, “now I’ll not be long,” she disappeared downstairs and lifted the telephone receiver, swiftly dialling Nancy Chester’s pager. A short time later the Nurse responded, Nell Wilson detailed the symptoms and her own actions.

“You did exactly the right thing, Nell,” Nancy’s response was encouraging, “she’ll need warmth to try and stop the shivering.”

“But she’s already got a high temperature, Nancy, won't this make it worse?”

“Well it will, in the short term, but the important thing is to stop the shivering, the more she shivers the higher the temperature will rise.” Nancy explained, “It’s a known complication in some infections, the hypothalamus controls body temperature, sometimes the infection attacks this area and changes the temperature at which a body will feel cold. When that happens the person will shiver to raise their temperature.”

“But surely it’s dangerous to keep raising the temperature?” Nell sounded worried.

“Yes, so the idea is to get the body as warm as possible to stop the shivering. It’s called a rigor.”

“How long will it continue, Nancy?”

“Not sure, but you’ll know immediately it stops,” the nurse replied, “Because Miss Annersley will suddenly go from shivering to profuse sweating as the body suddenly catches on to the fact that it is too hot! Will you be able to manage, Nell? Only my people are a bit stretched.”

“I can manage,” Nell said quickly, “What must I do?”

Thank you Lesley. Poor Hilda must be feeling really rotten. It's ages since I had flu - suppose I'm lucky. Just get colds.

Dad survived the flu epidemic after WWI, having caught it himself.

Also love the touch that she worked out what had happened in a bookshop.

A short conversation gave Nell all the information necessary and she rang off with a promise from Nancy that the nurse would be along later that evening to check how the Head was doing. Nell Wilson collected a few things from the kitchen, switched the kettle on, then went back up to her friend.

“Hi there, how are you doing?” Her soft question didn’t receive a reply at first and, worried, she moved to kneel beside the bed. Hilda opened her eyes slowly,

“I have felt worse,” she replied very quietly, “I’m just having problems remembering when!” She licked her lips.

Nell noticed, “How much have you drunk today?” she demanded.

Hilda’s eyes had closed again and she took some time before she replied, “H-haven’t,”

Nell filled a glass with water then raised her friend to a sitting position, “Well you’ve got to start,” she said, holding the glass to Hilda’s lips, “Once you stop shivering you’ll be losing fluid. Now drink this!” She held her friend up while she drank, then filled the glass and insisted she drain that too. Once the second glass was empty Hilda sank back on the bed.

“Still cold,” she murmured, “S-sorry to cause so much trouble,”

“I’ll bring up a hot water bottle in a minute,” Nell replied, “And I don’t want to hear you apologise again! You can’t help being ill.” She moved to the door, intent on returning to the kitchen to fill a hot water bottle from the kettle, as she did her quick ears heard a very soft comment.

“Yes mother!”

Nancy Chester appeared within the hour and assessed the patient, when she checked the Head’s temperature she whistled.

“What is it?” Nell asked quickly.

“Miss Anners…I mean Hilda has just broken the record,” Nancy replied, “She has the highest temperature on-site!” She knelt beside the bed, “Do you still feel cold?”

Hilda turned a weary face to the nurse, “A little,” she said very quietly, “but it’s not as bad now,” she coughed, then continued, “Just want to sleep, ache everywhere.”

“Well we can give you something for that,” Nancy replied, she reached into the bag slung across her shoulder and brought out some ‘Cold and Flu’ preparations, she gave them to Nell, “Give her these, probably every four hours, at least to begin with.” She knelt beside the bed once more and scrutinised the patient, “I think the second stage of the rigor will be starting soon.”

“When the body suddenly realises it’s too hot?”

“Yes,” Nancy smiled, “It’s probably a good thing that all of us were taught so thoroughly how to make a bed. It’s likely that you’ll need to change the bed a few times through the night!” She stood up and faced Nell, “Make sure she keeps drinking, and call me if, at any time, she suddenly doesn’t recognise you or appears confused. I’ll be in early tomorrow morning.”

It was a long night; Hilda took the flu remedy and kept drinking, before midnight she suddenly mentioned she was hot, as Nell stripped off the duvets and hot water bottles, Hilda’s body attempted to cool down the only way it knew how! Within seconds she was drenched in perspiration. As the nurse Nell attempted to reduce the temperature further by tepid sponging and, when Hilda’s temperature appeared to stabilise, she helped her to sit out while she changed the sheets. Unfortunately this was not the end, it appeared that the temperature centre was still being seriously affected and there were further episodes, both of excessive cold and sweating through the night. Neither woman managed to get much rest until the early hours.

It was starting to get light when Hilda Annersley awoke, she took a few seconds to orientate herself and consider how she felt. She still felt very unwell, every joint ached, her head was thumping, and she had a deep, rasping cough, she also felt she could sleep for a year. However, rather than feeling so cold she was shivering, her temperature appeared to have stabilised, she actually felt she was too hot, and definitely running a temperature. It seemed the rigors had gone.

Hilda sat up slowly, unable to coax her aching limbs to move faster, she looked across at the chair next to the window. Nell Wilson sat in the chair, her head resting against the chair back, asleep. She looked tired. As Hilda moved to get up, Nell awoke,

“Hilda? What is it? Can I get something for you?” She sounded worried.

Hilda stood up shakily and pulled her dressing gown on, she slowly groped her way across to Nell’s chair and lightly touched her on the arm,

“Go back to sleep Nell,” she said gently, “This is one thing I have to do myself!” She made her way to the bathroom, smiling.

I've never had flu like that, nor has anyone else in the family, but at least I know what needs to be done if it ever does happem - not only is RCS totally awesome as a chronicle of the life and times of Hilda Annersley, it's educational too.

Trust the Middles to start it all off
Love N&H soooo much. Also liked the reference to Nell and Con's friendship, it so rarely gets mentioned and I grew up thinking of them as much greater friends than N&H because I mostly read the early books.
This is all vaguely reminiscent of our current mumps epidemic here *spooky*
*giggles at Kat*
*wibbles about Hilda*
Awwwww bless Rosalind and Geoff!!!
Worried about Hilda and Kathie
I've just realised how very educational the RCS drabbles are. Lesley puts in so much information about so many different things. It's all going to come in handy one day!

Nancy Chester appeared a little after seven that morning, she spent some time checking the Head and pronounced tentatively that she thought the worst was over.

“I think you had a particularly virulent strain, Hilda,” she said smiling, “the same type that Kathie Ferrars had, and a few of the girls, though not many, luckily.”

“But there are no complications though?” Nell Wilson still looked tired, she’d obviously had no more sleep than Hilda.

Nancy shook her head, “Not so far,” she replied, “But the high temperature and rigors will mean Hilda’s immune system has had to work particularly hard, it will be vulnerable for a while. I spoke to Nancy Wilmot two days ago about Kathie, now I’ll tell you, Nell, Hilda must stay off for the next week. She must be fully recovered and that will mean a great deal of rest.”

“Yes, and she’s not likely to rest if she’s allowed back to the School,” Nell said thoughtfully, “She’s a particularly stubborn individual! Well, we’ll just have to be even more stubborn, not let her in!”

“That would be best, Nell, don’t even allow her the possibility of returning until I say she is fit.” Nancy said with a twinkle.

“You know, I am actually in the same room as the pair of you.” Hilda interrupted mildly, “I believe, as Headmistress, that I have the authority here!”

“Where on Earth did you get that idea from?” Nancy smiled, “As far as medical matters are concerned you have no say!” She turned to go, then stopped as she caught sight of Nell’s face, “And you should take the next couple of days off too, Nell.” she said firmly, “You look like death warmed up!”

In the offices of Real Chalet School Industries, Madge Russell sat at her desk, holding a phone to her right ear and listening intently to the person on the other end of the line. A swift knock at the door and she looked up to see the dark head of her sister, she beckoned for her to come in. Joey Maynard walked in and took a seat, waiting for Madge to finish speaking.

“OK Ruth, thanks for telling me.” Madge said quietly, “If there’s anything that we can do, don’t hesitate to call. Bye now!” She replaced the receiver and smiled across at her sister.

“Was that the School?” Joey asked.

“Yes, Ruth Derwent is in charge,” Madge replied, “Hilda has the flu - really nasty bout apparently, and will be off for a while.”

“What about Bill?” Joey sounded worried.

“She’s fine,” Madge said quickly, “Well, she’s exhausted because she’s been looking after Hilda, Nan Chester has ordered her to have a couple of days off too. But she hasn’t got the flu, her vaccination worked.”

Joey smiled, “Good, I’m pleased, after all that she went through last term it’s not something she would appreciate. Is the epidemic showing signs of finishing?”

“It is,” Madge replied, “I spoke to Daisy earlier, she said that the Real Hospital have had no new cases in the last four days, same us ourselves here in the office. The School’s last cases fell ill two days ago, in fact Hilda was one of the last.”

“I bet that was only because she didn’t tell anyone before!” Joey grinned. “Anyway Madge, I assume the Board Meeting will have to be postponed? I mean the vast majority of the Directors are at the School and Daisy said she’ll not lift quarantine until next week.”

Madge nodded, “Yes, a pity really because I wanted to discuss a problem Mollie mentioned last time.”

“Some buying of our shares, you mean?” Jo said, “I saw Neil Hillier earlier today, he told me about it.”

Sorry for the delay everyone -I'm having real problems linking in the next part, coming up against a blank wall!

After Nancy Chester’s pronouncement the Nurse left the two Heads alone, Nell moved quickly to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast. She then sat on Hilda’s bed to encourage her friend to eat something.

“You ate nothing yesterday, Hilda,” she said sharply, “and not much the day before, and you haven’t the flesh on you to go without food for too long. You’ll start looking gaunt and unwell.”

Hilda, sat upright in bed but hardly able to keep her eyes open, smiled slightly, “Nell, I really don’t think I can eat,” she said quietly, “Even the thought of eating is making me feel ill.”

“Well at least drink this,” Nell handed over a glass of milk, she watched as her partner drained the glass, “Good, now try the toast, it’ll not hurt.”

Hilda sighed slightly but obediently reached for the toast, as she brought it to her mouth though her entire face took on a greenish cast. She shook her head, “Sorry Nell,” she whispered.

Nell stood up and helped her friend lie flat once more, “OK Hilda,” she said gently, “Get some sleep, at least you’ve had some calories. I’ll be here keeping an eye on you.”

Hilda, almost asleep, opened her eyes once more, “Nell, you need to sleep too, I don’t want you making yourself ill, you heard what Nancy said, promise me that you‘ll rest?”

Nell bent to kiss her friend’s cheek, “I promise, now stop arguing and go to sleep!” She switched off the bedside light, ensured that a full water jug and glass were by the bed and crept out. As she was closing the door she heard Hilda’s reply.

“Yes ma’am.”

Later that morning, Miss Derwent, Senior Mistress called a meeting of those Staff fit enough to attend. She quickly informed them that the Head was likely to be off until the Wednesday of the following week, and that the Deputy Head had been ordered to take a couple of days off,

“Although it’s likely that she’ll return tomorrow, knowing Nell,” she concluded with a grin.

Miss Townsend raised a question that had been concerning a number of people, “What about Half-Term? Wasn’t that supposed to be next week? If the Head’s not back until Wednesday will it still go ahead?”

Ruth Derwent frowned, “As far as I know it’ll still go ahead,” she replied, “Everyone should be back by then, I’ll check with Nell. Now, any other problems?”

“Are we allowed off-site?” This query, from Miss Dene, was one that most of those present were interested in. While they all enjoyed their work and loved the site, being restricted to the School grounds had caused any number of grumbles, especially as many had not been able leave the first weekend due to the media interest then.

Nancy Wilmot smiled, “We are, I spoke to Daisy Venables less than an hour ago. She has lifted all quarantines on the School and Hospital, the only proviso being that if you feel unwell, you don‘t go.”

There was a concerted sigh of relief, “Wonderful,” smiled Mlle de Lachenais, “At least the older girls will regain their freedom. What of the younger ones, Ruth, I’m sure they will be as eager to leave the grounds.”

“We’ll be arranging for some of the Forms to be taken into Melbourne for the afternoon on Saturday,” Ruth replied, “Gill is arranging a timetable at the moment, any of you interested in helping let her know.” she smiled across at Gill Culver. “Also, if this weather keeps up, then on Sunday those Staff on duty will be asked to help the Games Department.”

Everyone turned to view Peggy Burnett, “Only that we’ll be having swimming trials on that day, now most of the girls are well again Emma, Hilary and I can finally arrange it. It looks as though the weather will be fine so it’ll be a day on the beach everyone!”

With the Staff Meeting over Miss Derwent walked slowly over to the Head’s Study, she wanted to keep the amount of correspondence down as much as possible, Miss Wilmot joined her. Ruth smiled across at her friend, “How’s Kathie?”

Nancy returned the smile, “Better now,” she confessed, “There was a time I was really frightened for her, she had such a bad first night after going down with the infection.”

“Nancy Chester said she and Hilda were the worst in the School?”

Nancy nodded, “Yes, apparently Hilda beat Kathie’s temperature by only one tenth of a degree! They’re both recovering now though,” her eyes darkened slightly when she thought back to the night she had nursed Kathie through her rigors.

Ruth saw this and reached out an arm to place on her tall friend’s shoulder, “She’s recovering now, Nancy,” she said quickly, “That’s the important point.”

What on earth is this doing on page two?

Thank you Lesley, nice to see the school getting back into working order again, though slightly anxious about them going to Melbourne, I think they should all be kept firmly inside the school gates, purely for their own protection.

Glad that Hilda and Kathie are recovering - I don't doubt for a minute that they will both soon be back on their feet. Honestly.

Hastily checks money reserves and finds 10 Euros, 15 US dollars, 8 Maltese Lira (all in coins!) and £15.10. Can you buy shares with a credit card?

I reckon it's the safest investment you could make on the stock market!

Nancy smiled, they reached the Head's study and walked inside, "Will you need a hand Ruth?" Nancy asked quickly, "Because if so I can get Cathy or Rachel to cover for me, we're still nowhere close to full strength, at least one third of the girls are still off."
Ruth shook her head, "I should be OK," she said quickly, "Nell said she'd be back before the weekend and her work was up to date anyway, but thanks. How's Kathie now, is she well enough for visitors?"
Nancy thought, "Yes, I think she'd welcome them, she was saying only last night that she was bored. I think she's going to try and persuade Nancy Chester that she can return tomorrow, after all it's only the one day before the weekend."
"In that case I'll pop over this evening, if Ros is free she'll come too,”

“Won’t she be visiting Geoff?”

“Yes, but she said she’ll be back by nine, we’ll come over then.”

The day proceeded fairly smoothly, the epidemic had been quite severe with up to three quarters of the Staff and pupils succumbing. Although many had returned to normal duties/classes, they were all still subdued and experiencing the post-flu ‘depression’ so common after a bout. In addition those of the Seniors, in particular the Sixth forms, had realised the pressure that the Staff were under and had ensured that the Middle School in particular were well supervised.

That evening Ruth Derwent and Rosalind Moore walked across from the Staff Boarding House to look in on their friend. Nancy Wilmot opened the door of their shared cottage and ushered them in. Sat on the sofa, dressed in shorts and tee-shirt, was Kathie Ferrars. She looked pale beneath her tan but, on seeing the visitors a smile widened on her face,

“Ruth, Rosalind! How lovely to see you both! It’s started to get very boring, you know,” she continued, with an impish glance toward her partner, “seeing only Nancy’s face!”

Nancy refused to rise, instead, smiling lazily she remarked, “Of course it’s well known that children have very short attention spans!”

Ruth and Rosalind both laughed as Kathie spluttered, “Cheek! I’ll have you know that some people would consider me to be very mature, and most definitely not a child!”

Nancy walked across with a jug of lemonade and four glasses, she placed it on the coffee table in the middle of the room and sat next to Kathie on the sofa, she turned and smiled at Kathie, “Only those that do not know you, dear,” she said with amusement. She then reached out to place her arm around Kathie’s shoulders.

Kathie Ferrars resisted for a moment before allowing herself to be pulled close, she rested her head on Nancy’s shoulder before smiling across at her friends, “Well, I suppose she’s not all bad,” she said quietly.

Rosalind Moore reached for her lemonade and drank at least half the glass, “How are you feeling now, Kathie?”

“Much better, Ros,” the younger woman said with a slight smile, “For a few days I can honestly say I wanted to die, I felt so bad. But now, I’m eating again, the temperature has gone, I’m fit enough to work.”

Ruth smiled, “Only when Nancy Chester says so!” she said sternly.

The others all laughed, Kathie turned to her Department Head, “And how is Geoff?” she asked quickly.

Ros smiled and her face took on a very slight flush, “He’s very well,” she said quietly, “He and Kelly have rented a small flat for the next month or so, until she can return to the School.”

“When is that likely to be?” This from Nancy.

“Probably the week after half term,” Rosalind said, her expression darkening as she realised that that was only just over a week away, “Geoff will have to return to his Regiment then.”

There was silence for a time, the other three realising that this meant that Ros and Geoff would be separated. Being in the British Army could mean that the Lieutenant Colonel could be posted back to the home base of 2 Para, in Aldershot, England, or to command anywhere in the world.

Ruth said gently, “Has he said anything about it, Ros?”

Rosalind smiled slightly, “He hasn’t had the chance really,” she confessed, “I mean it was only during the holidays that we, that our,” she stuttered slightly then continued, “I mean, that we realised how we felt. There hasn’t been time.”

Nancy leant forward to squeeze Ros’s arm, “He’ll sort something out, Ros,” she said, “He’ll not want to lose you.”

“Definitely,” Kathie chimed in, “You can see how much he loves you, you can feel it.”

The friends said nothing more, but Rosalind found herself feeling a little more hopeful with all the unspoken support. She and Ruth only stayed a short time, seeing that Kathie was tiring. After saying goodbye, they strolled back to the Staff House. Rosalind looked across at her friend, “They are good together, aren’t they?”

Ruth smiled, “Yes they are, surprisingly so.” She paused for a moment, gauging her words, “Did you suspect, Rosalind? I mean, when we were in the fictional world, did you suspect that they were attracted to each other?”

Rosalind nodded, “Yes, I did.” She replied, “Oh, I know they never mentioned it, didn’t act upon the attraction while there. But it was there, all the same, if you knew what to look for.”

Ruth looked up at the night sky for a time, “I had no idea,” she said quietly, “None at all, when they started being open about their relationship at the end of last year I was shocked.” She broke off then continued, “And to begin with, I was horrified.” Ruth looked across at Rosalind quickly, “Please don’t ever tell them so,” she sounded worried.

Ros smiled, “Of course not,” she replied, “But why were you horrified? I mean it’s just love, surely that can’t be wrong?”

“No,” Ruth stopped walking for a time, thinking, “I suppose I just didn’t know how to react to them as a couple. It was so different to my expectations of ‘the right thing’ and I was a little afraid, to tell the truth.”

“It didn’t show,” Rosalind remarked, “You were there giving support right from the start.”

“Well of course I was, with all the problems Nell had because Hilda was trapped, the last thing Madge needed was for there to be a rift between her senior mistresses. So I just kept quiet about it. By the time Hilda had been rescued and everything, I found that my ideas had changed, or rather, that my feelings of friendship for both Nancy and Kathie were such that their relationship didn’t seem such a big deal. It was just a part of them.”

The two continued walking, when they got to their rooms Rosalind stopped again, “There are a lot of people who would never have got past their initial feelings, Ruth. You’re a pretty amazing woman.”

Ruth smiled, “No,” she disagreed, “I’ve just got some pretty amazing friends.”

this covers so many issues so sensitively. Sorry Pat! RL got in the way!

The next day, as predicted by Miss Derwent, saw Miss Wilson back at work. Miss Derwent had spent the first period after breakfast closeted with the Deputy Head, running through all the events affecting the School and bringing Nell up to date. She had also been witness to the scene when Nancy Chester had discovered that Miss Wilson had returned early.

Miss Wilson had sat at her desk with an expression of patient forbearance as the Nurse had detailed exactly why she needed more rest. Nancy had not stinted, starting with the fact that her own health could be compromised, that Miss Annersley might still need her, that the School could manage perfectly well without her, then moving on to the fact that she was setting a poor example to her Staff and the school in general. After some twenty minutes of this, during which time Nell Wilson had not said a word, Nancy stopped.

“You’re not going to take any notice of what I’m saying, are you Nell?”

The Deputy Head thought for a moment, “No,” she said with a smile.

“And I expect Hilda will return far earlier than I advised, won’t she?”

“I’d say that was a certainty,” Nell replied mildly, “Oh I’ll not let her back over the weekend, but, if she’s improved enough then Monday or Tuesday definitely.”

Nancy turned to look at the Senior Mistress, Miss Derwent smiled sympathetically, “I could have told you, Nancy, neither of them tends to listen when it comes to putting themselves before the School, when you get a minute I’ll let you know how we managed to get them to take a break during the last holidays!”

Nancy shook her head, sorrowfully, “Hopeless cases, the pair of them!” Nancy’s mood was not helped when, on entering the Staff Room she saw that Miss Ferrars had also returned early!

The Friday was a fairly quiet one, as more and more Staff and pupils had returned the School had reverted to normal. Now, with only the last few still to return, it was running smoothly. Carolyn Phillips had returned and taken over her Nursery class, all of whom had recovered from their bout of flu. Nurse Wilkie had returned to the hospital.

Miss Wilson had spent a busy morning catching up on correspondence and taken a couple of Chemistry classes in the afternoon. She had gone back to the cottage at lunch time to discover that Hilda was in bed but awake, she had taken over with her a very light meal that Karen herself had prepared. After warming it in the microwave she’d taken the plate up to Hilda. The Head was obviously feeling better as, for the first time in days, she’d managed to eat. That evening Miss Wilson allowed herself to be persuaded to leave the School when the end of the afternoon lessons bell had sounded. Nancy and Kathie were shooed from the premises by the other Staff at the same time.

She let herself into the cottage quietly, expecting that Hilda would be sleeping. Rather than disturb her, Nell sat and watched some TV, tuning in to the Discovery Channel to watch a programme about Ancient Egypt, intrigued by the explorations of the Valley of the Kings she was oblivious to external sounds. As the time moved closer to six pm she walked upstairs to see if Hilda wanted anything to eat. Opening the door to Hilda’s room she was shocked to see that the bed was not only empty, but neatly made.

Her shock lasted only moments though as a sound from along the corridor alerted her to the fact that Hilda was in the bathroom. A very short time later and Hilda came out into the corridor, she was dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, it appeared to be far too hot for the climate, but Hilda obviously was still feeling a little cold.

“Wondered where on Earth you were, Hilda,” Nell smiled.

“After so long, Nell I needed to get out of that room,” Hilda replied, “and I definitely needed a bath!”

“Not a cold one, I hope?” Nell’s smile turned to a grin.

Hilda smiled again, “Hardly!” she said, raising an eyebrow. She walked, rather unsteadily to the stairs and made her way down. Once in the lounge, the movement was enough to physically exhaust her and she sank gratefully onto the sofa. Nell brought a blanket down to wrap around her.

“Do you feel like eating Hilda?”

Hilda nodded, “I think so,” she replied, “just not too much, yet.” She leant back, her eyes closing, a short time later she was awoken by Nell sitting opposite her. She had a mug of milky coffee in her hands.

“Here, drink this for now, just while I finish cooking something.”

Hilda obediently took the mug and sipped the brew.

“Now, are you sure you’re on the mend, Hilda?” Nell’s question was a little intense.

Hilda nodded, “Yes Nell, I’m fine now. Thank you.”

“Good, because the Staff were asking about Half Term.”

“You didn’t tell them did you?”

Nell smiled, “And spoil the surprise? No fear! I’m just glad you’re going to be fit by then. It’ll be a good weekend.”

I like the way Hilda had to get up, I know that feeling so well.

Oh, good: everyone’s well on the road to recovery – hopefully they won’t push so hard there are relapses.

I’m catching up once again, and much enjoying all the staff interactions. The Ruth-Rosalind conversation rings particularly true!

*eager to hear about the surprise*

I'm wibbling about half-term too!

Lesley, as usual this is excellent and I really like the inter-staff interactions such as Rosalind/Ruth, Nancy/Kathie, and the inimitable Hilda and Nell! Especially like seeing Nell and Con Stewart/Mackenzie's relationship.

You have made these characters your own, which is one reason Wink why I've kept fairly far away from them!

The following morning saw Nell Wilson wander over to the School first thing, to check if there were any important messages and look in on any of the students and Staff that were still unwell. There were only a few now, and all of them were thought to be fit enough to take part in the trials the next day. Miss Wilson had insisted that she take the duty for the weekend and that Ruth Derwent take a break. After some persuasion Ruth had joined Rosalind Moore in spending time with Geoff and Kelly Stevens - they were planning to stay with them the weekend.

That afternoon saw the two Heads being visited by the Prefects. Alison Martin had spoken to Miss Wilson that morning to check Miss Annersley was getting better. They had then decided that they would like to see for themselves. The Deputy Head had agreed but explained it could only be for a short time, Miss Annersley was still recovering.

After lunch the Prefects, in small groups, walked across to the cottage; Alison, Louise and Carol were some of the last to arrive and their joy and relief when the Head herself opened the door was palpable. The Head was still very shaky and appeared pale, this was accentuated by the bright yellow sweatshirt she was wearing. In addition the three girls could see that she had lost weight. Nevertheless she smiled broadly on seeing the three.

“Come in, all of you,” she said warmly, and her voice had also changed, being somewhat hoarse and lacking it’s normal tone, “It’s so good to see you.”

All three greeted the Head with hugs and kisses, ignoring Miss Annersley’s mild admonishment about whether she was still infectious.

“You’re getting better, aren’t you Hilda?” Alison demanded, she saw the older woman’s expression change slightly and added, “Don’t worry, we’ll not forget in front of anyone else!”

Hilda smiled, “I’m getting better, Alison,” she replied gently, “Although it is taking longer than I first imagined.” She glanced around at the three, “I’m happy for you to continue using my Christian name girls, and I’ll be saying the same to the others, but not in the School itself. Let’s try and preserve the dignity of the office!”

Carol hugged the woman again, “No worries, Hilda,” she grinned, with a distinctly Aussie accent, she then looked again at Hilda’s top, “I didn’t see you wear this sweatshirt while we were in the UK, is it new?”

Hilda nodded even as she ushered the three into the lounge where Nell and the rest of the Prefects were sat. “It is,” she looked down at the shirt, smiling.

“It’s rather, um, yellow, isn’t it?” Louise said quickly, “I mean, you almost need sunglasses for it.”

Hilda looked across at her partner before replying, “Nell bought it for me,” she replied, “after all my comments about her red one. I think she was trying to make a point!”

Which is why Lesley isn't telling us about them yet. I think that they're going to be her biggest cliffs ever.

I've had a thought - perhaps it's Jack and Jem buying the shares so they can take it over from the monstous regiment of women to put it back under male control where it *ought* to be

The rest of the weekend went smoothly, the swimming trial on Sunday went well, the weather was warm enough that all the Seniors and Middles were able to be assessed and most of the Juniors. The Games Staff had arranged a number of swimming matches with nearby schools and wanted to recommence training as soon as possible. Although the location of the School, next to the sea, was considered a perfect position, Peggy Burnett had, on more than one occasion, mentioned that it did mean that they were rather reliant on the weather for their swimming practices.

Early Monday morning saw both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson up. Nell Wilson, coming downstairs dressed for running, was surprised to see her partner already in the kitchen.

“Hilda? I didn’t expect you to be up just yet. It’s far too early for breakfast you know, the rising bell at school hasn’t rung yet.” Nell smiled at her friend, “I’m going for a run, but surely you don’t feel fit enough to join me yet?”

Hilda shook her head, “Not for some time, Nell,” she said softly, “I’m still feeling a little weak. No, I thought I would go across to my Study early, I’ve been away a week, I’ll need to catch up.”

Nell sighed, “I suppose it’ll make no difference, me telling you that you can’t go, will it?”

“None Nell, unless you were planning on physically barring the door!” Hilda smiled slightly.

“Don’t tempt me! Just take it easy Hilda,” Nell said quietly, “I don’t want you falling ill again. I’ll be across soon, just going for a short run.”

The return of the Headmistress that morning was greeted with cheers from the School, along with a number of the pupils, her return that Monday meant that the School was almost back to full strength. Nancy Chester had only four patients, all in the sick bay, with a further two still in hospital. All of them expected to return to the School by the Wednesday at the latest, therefore, when questioned by the Staff, Miss Annersley confirmed that Half term was to go ahead as planned.

“And when do we hear about all the plans for Half Term, Hilda?” This from Miss Derwent, “After all it is only four days away.”

Miss Annersley smiled, “I’ll announce the plans on Wednesday morning, Ruth,” she said, “Everyone can hear them at the same time!” She looked round at the Staff, “Now, was there anything else?”

There was a short flurry of glances between a number of the mistresses, notably those of the English Department, Kathie Ferrars and the Music mistresses. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked puzzled and waited. Eventually Miss Ferrars stood up, she still seemed a little shaky but was obviously almost fully recovered from her bout of flu.

“Just one thing,” she said rather quietly, “As you know, Hilda, you asked Ruth and myself to run the Christmas entertainment? Well we’ve managed to put together a script and thought we’d pass out copies for everyone, we’ll be starting rehearsals after Half Term so everyone will need to know their parts.”

As she was speaking large scripts were being passed out to everyone, the Staff looked eagerly at the front page, entitled Cast of Characters, there were a number of muffled giggles. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson both looked at their copies of the Pantomime script, they then looked at each other,

“Well it isn’t the pantomime horse, Nell,” the Head said very quietly, “We did wonder if they’d give us that!”

Miss Wilson looked again at her name and the name and description of her character, she looked over at her friend, “Know something, Hilda?” she asked conversationally, “I think, before this pantomime is over, we’ll both be wishing that they had!”

Tuesday afternoon saw the postponed monthly meeting of the RCS Industries Board. Held at the School at nine pm, the meeting was interesting mainly due to the last item, under Any Other Business, Madge introduced a newcomer to the board,

“I’d like to introduce Neil Hillier to everyone,” she said smiling, “Neil is the Chief Financial Officer for Real Chalet School Industries, he has been in post for the last three months.”

Madge indicated the man sat to her left and sat down. Neil Hillier rose and gazed round at everyone, a man a little above average height, with a slender build, he was in his mid forties, “Good evening everyone, I asked Mrs Russell, Madge, if I could speak to you about an area of concern. You may or may not be aware, but part of my duties involve scrutinising the Stock Market every day to keep informed about the stock for the company. Over the last few weeks or so, I have become slightly concerned about certain transactions.”

He stopped as one of the directors rose, “Neil? I’m Vikki Kirkum, I don’t know about anyone else but the whole idea of the Stock Market and companies having stock is a bit of a mystery. Could you explain a little?”

There was a generalised murmur of agreement then Hilda Annersley leant forward, “I must admit to the same lack of knowledge, “she said softly, “It would be useful if we had some idea of the process.”

Hillier smiled, “No problem, ladies,” he said, “At least you are happy to acknowledge that you need more information, one of the previous posts I held was extremely frustrating as the Board Members insisted that they already knew, when it was patently obvious that they did not!”

“Put simply then, any company has shares, these shares can be owned by anyone, although the Owner/Chief Executive of the company will have enough shares to retain control. However, when a company is floated on the Stock Exchange, that is, it becomes a Public Limited Company, then a certain percentage of the shares of the company must be available for the general public or other companies to buy.”

“The value of the shares can go up or down depending on how well the company is doing?” This from Nancy Wilmot.

Hillier looked at the place name on the table in front of her, “Yes, Nancy, it’s a good indicator of if the company is successful.” He said quickly. “Now, one of the duties of a Financial Officer is to keep a close eye on how the shares are doing, whether they are selling, what price they are selling for, etc. Over the last month or so, I’ve noticed that the amount of trading has increased. More of the company shares are being bought.”

“But that’s a good thing, isn’t it?” Robin Humphries was rather puzzled.

“Not always, Robin,” Madge replied, “Not when the same company is buying all the shares.”

“Exactly!” Hillier agreed, “Now, at present, it appears that one company, a large conglomerate, has managed to secure some 18% of the shares, not a major problem in itself except that in any stock market transaction, the total number of shares bought is recorded. If a company reaches 30% of the total shares available, then they must, by law, make a bid to buy the company. And this board will not be able to stop them!”

There was an instant hubbub of noise, all the Board suddenly discussing this with vigour; Madge quietened everyone by turning to Neil Hillier,

“Neil, you explained this to Joey and me earlier today, but for the benefit of everyone else, could you explain again why we will not be able to stop them?”

“Certainly Madge,” the slender man smiled, “The only thing that will stop the takeover will be if enough money is not offered.”

Nell Wilson frowned, “But surely we can price the company such that no one could afford it?”

Hillier shook his head, “No, the price must reflect the market value, and the Stock Exchange would be involved to assess that, a projected buy out can be refused if the financial people do not believe that the money is available.” The man stopped, thinking, “To give an example, most of you are English, do you follow English football? Recently the football club Manchester United was able to reject a possible takeover because the financial people were not satisfied with the way the money would be raised to buy the club and pay off debts.”

“But if this conglomerate had the finances?” Hilda Annersley put in quietly.

“Then you would have to sell,” Hillier said grimly, “It’s called a hostile takeover.”

There was silence for a time while all digested this information, then Peggy Burnett spoke, “You say this company have 18% of the shares, but will need to reach 30%? What if we buy up all the other shares, so they can’t reach that figure?”

Hillier shook his head, “Not possible, there have to be a certain number of shares out for the public domain, that’s what being a PLC means.”

“So what can we do then?” this from Jennie MacLeod.

“Well, first thing, I’m going to make enquiries, see if we can identify the conglomerate, maybe we’ll be able to come to some arrangement.” Hillier replied, “I’ll keep you informed.”

Guilty conscience?

Very soon afterwards the meeting ended; most Board members too stunned to discuss very much else. When Madge and Joey would have joined the Heads back at their cottage, Nell vetoed the idea.

“Not tonight, Madge,” she said firmly, “Hilda needs her rest and I know that if you came back with us it would be a late night.”

After saying goodbye to everyone and seeing those not of the School off-site, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked back to their cottage. Partway there Miss Wilson linked an arm through her partner’s.

“I can see that you’re tired, Hilda,” she said, “when you are tired you lose what little colour you have in your face and your eyes turn as grey as mine.”

Miss Annersley smiled, even while she leant on her partner slightly for support, “I could make the decision for myself, Nell,” she said softly, “when are you going to stop treating me as an invalid?”

Miss Wilson considered, “Ask me again in a year or two!” she said eventually. There was silence for a time, then, “Rather worrying, about this possible takeover business?”

“Yes, especially as there seems to be little we can do to prevent it from happening. Neil said he would be checking with the Stock Exchange, to discover the identity of this company that’s buying the shares.”

“Maybe we’ll be able to think of something once we know, Hilda,” Nell replied, “because I don’t know about you, but I have no wish to work for some faceless group that is only interested in profit!”

They’d reached the cottage by then, once inside Nell moved to the kitchen, “I’ll bring you up a coffee, Hilda,” she said, “You go on to bed!”

The Head made to object and was stopped by Miss Wilson raising her hand, “Tell me you don’t feel shattered, Hilda, and I’ll stop nagging!”

Admitting defeat Miss Annersley smiled and obeyed orders.

The following morning saw the entire School back, aware that the Head had promised that everyone would be told about the plans for Half Term, the Staff were particularly impatient to know the plans. For the last few days Nell Wilson had been infuriating about dropping hints on the actual content of the weekend. So much so that there had been a deputation to the Senior Mistress from some of the junior Staff, trying to arrange for the Deputy Head to be ambushed and forced to tell!

It was with some reluctance that Ruth Derwent had refused permission, as she commented to Rosalind, she wanted to know just as much.

“The problem is, Ros,” she continued as they were sat at breakfast that morning, “She knows she’s winding everyone up, so will continue to do it!”

“Never mind Ruth,” Miss Moore replied soothingly, “it’ll be Assembly soon, not long to wait!”

Somehow the rest of the School had heard that the Head was to announce the plans for Half Term that Assembly. It was with surprise that Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson realised that they were the only ones still eating, not only on the Staff table, but anywhere in the Dining Hall! Miss Wilson bent her head closer to her friend,

“Do you think they are keen to know, Hilda?”

“Any keener and we would have a riot, Nell,” Miss Annersley retorted. Taking pity on the school she rose and smiled round at everyone, “Yes, we will be announcing plans for Half Term,” she said clearly, “Assembly will commence as soon as everyone has finished their morning chores. I want no complaints from the House Staff of substandard work.” She smilingly dismissed everyone to return to their Boarding Houses, then walked back to the Admin block to pick up some equipment.

When the School filed into the Hall that morning it was a full fifteen minutes earlier than normal. Miss Annersley had spoken to the Senior Housemistress who had assured her that all dormitories were clean and tidy. The Head smiled round at everyone,

“Sit down girls,” she said, her voice was still showing the last signs of flu damage and wasn’t quite as deep in tone, however everyone could hear her. “Now, I’m sure that you are all anxious to hear about the plans for Half Term. Firstly, there will not be a Guide camp this weekend, I believe Xanthe Grey is planning on a weekend away during the summer holidays, sometime in January, therefore we will not be losing the Guides. Almost all those that live nearby will be going home, but that will still mean that fully three quarters of you will be here.”

Miss Wilson stepped up to continue, “We thought about this for some time, girls,” she said, smiling, “and with the recent epidemic and time off that everyone has had to take, we felt that you would all benefit from some additional time for study. In particular we felt that the subjects of Geography, Biology, History and Mathematics required further study and it is with that in mind that we have arranged specialist Study centres for all of these.”

There was absolute silence, Miss Annersley looked around the Hall, seeing stunned expressions on every face, both student and Staff. She smiled slightly, the smile lighting up an otherwise grave expression, “We appreciate that this is not the Half Term that you expected, everyone,” she said, “but we feel it will be most beneficial for your future here at the Real Chalet School.”

After intercepting any number of pleading looks from the rest of the Staff, Ruth Derwent stood up, “Er, Miss Annersley?” she began hesitantly, “Both the girls and the Staff would appreciate a proper break from their work.”

Miss Wilson stepped forward, “They’ll have it, Miss Derwent,” she smiled, “These centres are away from the School.”

“But it’s not a holiday! It’s just more work!” The voice came from the very youngest forms and the two Heads looked across, puzzled, trying to identify the student. Eventually they realised that the voice was from Miss Laidler.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at each other for a long minute, then suddenly both smiled, Miss Annersley was the first to speak, “Miss Wilson, would you please bring up on the screen the pictures of these Study Centres?”

“Certainly, Miss Annersley,” the Deputy Head moved to the lectern and pressed a few keys on the keyboard, a picture sprang upon the screen behind them. The School looked on with some surprise. The picture was that of an old fashioned steam train moving along a track through some exquisite countryside. “This is the Puffing Billy steam railway,” Miss Wilson explained. “It runs for a distance of about eight miles through some of the most beautiful views, through forests and gullies and even across a wooden trestle bridge. Passengers sit in open carriages and may study the Geography to their hearts content.” She stopped and grinned around at the School, “That is, if the Geography Head considers it educational?”

There was a laugh as Miss Moore rose to signal her approval. Miss Annersley smiled and moved the screen on to another picture.

“These next few pictures are of the Phillip Island Nature Park,” she said softly, “It is home to a number of popular wildlife attractions, including the Penguin Parade and a Koala Conservation Centre, the park covers the entire island and features different habitats including wetlands and coastlines.” She moved the display on to show pictures of the Penguin Parade itself, “Miss Armitage? I hope that qualifies as Biology?”

The School laughed again as they looked with obvious interest at the beautiful photographs of wildlife. Miss Annersley moved the pictures on once more and spoke once more, “Now these next pictures shown the History Study Centre,” she said with a smile, “This is called Sovereign Hill, it’s an outdoor museum that recreates a town in Australia in the 1850’s during their gold rush. You’ll be able to see how a real town worked, with actual townspeople and craftsmen. There’s also the chance to pan for gold yourself and to watch a sound and light show of Australia’s only civil uprising - the Eureka Rebellion of 1854.”

She stopped there as some of the School began to clap, Miss Townsend stood up to indicate her approval on behalf of the History section.

Miss Wilson then completed the picture show, “And, for the Mathematics side, we have an attraction called A Maze ‘N Things World,” she showed a picture that appeared to be of a giant purple tap floating in the middle of the air, and pouring water onto a flooded house. The School giggled appreciatively. “Now as well as strange sights like this, there is a maze, an indoor slide and, especially for all you mathematicians, an entire shop full of puzzles and games.” She saw Miss Wilmot stand up and smile for the Maths Department.

All the School, students and Staff, began clapping and cheering enthusiastically, Miss Annersley allowed them to continue for a few minutes then held up her hand for silence. “Now we do realise that this was not quite what you expected, when we mentioned Study Centres,” she began with a twinkle in her eye, “But if there is anyone that would prefer to work over the weekend I’m sure we can find them something to do!”

Miss Wilson stepped forward, “Yes, just speak up now!”

There was a silence so complete that a pin could have been heard dropping to the floor. After almost a minute the Head looked toward her partner, “Seems as though they all like the plans, Miss Wilson!”

I spent 2 weeks doing volunteer work at Puffing Billy in my year out - laying track, serving in the shop, on the train etc
It was so fun!

And also volunteered in a similar place to Sovereign Hill a bit further away from melbourne called Swan Hill - got to dress up in period costume and act out little scenarios for all the tourists.

Went to Phillip Island and the Amazing place too.

*squeaking with excitement* I've been to Sovereign Hill too- am I the only member of the UK/Irish contingent who has? Very Happy

I loved it too- but i think it's pretty similar in some ways to the Black Country Museum, for those of you who know that. Apart from one thing. The sweet shop. I have clear memories of the most divine raspberry boiled sweets from SH. I've never had any to compare with them, and I think it's now 13 or 14 years since I was at Sovereign Hill! I gave up looking after a while. I think I remember panning for gold too. So, yes, Lesley, as HOD for History you can be sure I approve! ROFL ROFL

With a smile the Head dismissed the School to their normal lessons, after first indicating that timetables for what forms would be visiting which attractions, would be posted on the main notice board and on all School emails by that afternoon. Although none of the attractions necessitated an overnight stay, some of them meant the students would be away until late for both Friday night and Saturday night. On the Sunday everyone would be back by mid afternoon and it would be usual bed times for everyone ready to start afresh on Monday morning.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson checked through the lists before they were posted,

“Are you alright with having the Saturday off, Nell?” Miss Annersley asked.

Miss Wilson looked at the Saturday list, “Yes, that’s fine, Hilda, I’m planning to visit Con then. I thought you wanted the Saturday though?”

“I did, but I’ve been invited to Madge’s for the day and she and Jem are flying to Sydney Saturday morning, they have tickets for the Opera House. So I’ll go over there on Friday instead. Ruth can cover Sunday, we’ll be on site then anyway.”

“What are the Prefects doing? Maybe they can come over.”

“Perhaps,” the Head’s voice was distracted and she was frowning at the lists, Miss Wilson noticed and spoke.

“Is something wrong, Hilda?”

The Head looked round, “Just looking at when the Staff are off, Nell,” she pointed, “Look, Nancy Wilmot will be in charge of the Seniors on Friday, as Ruth is off, she has Saturday off. Kathie Ferrars is off on the Friday and is with the Middles on Saturday. It seems a shame that they can’t have one day together.”

Miss Wilson checked the list, “Not a problem, Hilda, I can swap with Kathie, I’ll have the Friday off, Con won’t mind what day I see her, and Kathie can spend the Saturday with Nancy.”

The rest of the week went very quickly, those girls going home for the weekend disappeared after the end of lessons on Thursday, and Thursday evening itself was a very relaxed affair. The lecture halls had been adapted for showing films once more, and a number of current blockbusters were on offer. In addition there was a disco in the main Hall until quite late. Friday saw all those going on trips disappearing very early and only a tiny number of people, mainly Staff with the day off, there after eight am.

Rosalind Moore had the day off on the Saturday, on Friday, along with a number of other mistresses; she took the bulk of the Middles away. Included in with the Middles was Kelly Stevens, Kelly had been given the all clear to return to the School after Half Term. A small amount of arm-twisting on her part had persuaded her father to allow her to rejoin her form for the fun weekend. Although still having to have physiotherapy and with a few dressings, she was much improved and wanted to return to normality as soon as possible. Surprisingly there were no problems or adventures for the Friday. The girls were, reasonably, well behaved, and the Staff were well able to keep discipline yet joined in the fun with enthusiasm.

The following day Rosalind was off, as Geoff Stevens was free they made the most of the opportunity and spent the day together, driving to a secluded cove with a picnic lunch and basking in the warm weather. When they eventually returned it was late, they had dined in a French Restaurant in Melbourne and didn’t feel like rejoining the School entertainment. Instead they decided to walk in the grounds; it was a clear night and, although moonless, the starlight was enough to allow them to see.

“What’s over here?” Geoff pointed.

“The new boarding houses,” she said, “most of them are almost complete now, but they started digging the foundations for another only the other day.”

“Place is expanding that rapidly?”

“Apparently, although I think Hilda and Nell have a maximum figure – they don’t want the place to get too unwieldy, or to lose all of its atmosphere.”

The couple continued walking for some time, enjoying each other’s company.

The Sunday morning saw a far more leisurely breakfast or most of the girls and Staff. Although there were some excursions planned none of them were for the entire day and they were generally later leaving. Miss Annersley had just finished eating and was leaving the breakfast table when she was interrupted.

“Miss Annersley?” It was Carol Leigh, she was holding the arm of one of the Middles – the Head recognised Kelly Stevens. “May we speak to you, in private?”

Miss Annersley looked puzzled but nodded, “Of course, Carol, come with me to my Study.”

The journey was made in silence, Miss Annersley’s first thought, that Kelly had somehow managed to misbehave within two days of returning, was not borne out by the two girls’ behaviour. Carol was supporting Kelly, telling her not to worry, that everything would be sorted out. Once in the Study Carol wasted no time speaking.

“Kelly has been unable to get in touch with her father, Miss Annersley,” she said quickly, “There’s no reply at his flat and the mobile is switched off.”

“I’ve also tried to contact Ros…I mean Miss Moore,” Kelly herself said, “she said she’d be here for breakfast and would be joining the Fourth for our excursion.”

Miss Annersley considered, “Carol, Kelly, they may have decided to stay away,” she said softly, “I understand that they spent the day together, yesterday?”

Kelly nodded, “Yes, but Dad’s car is parked in the car park,” she said, somewhat tearfully, “and Miss Derwent has already checked Miss Moore’s room, they’ve both disappeared!”

If you don't like cliffs Lisa, you'll have to read something else! Wink

Miss Annersley reached for the telephone, “Sit down girls,” she ordered, “I’ll just make a few calls,” she swiftly rang through to the Gatehouse and put a few trenchant questions.

“Yes, Miss Annersley, Miss Moore and Colonel Stevens arrived at the Gatehouse at about ten fifteen last night. We’ve no record of the car or either of them leaving the grounds.”

A few minutes later Miss Derwent appeared, she listened to the information then turned to the Head, “As far as I’m aware, Miss Annersley, Miss Moore intended to stay in the Staff House last night, she wanted to ensure she would be up in time for the planned departure of the Middles,” the Senior Mistress looked at her watch, “that’s in ten minutes. If she’d changed her plans she would have let me know, I’m sure of it.”

Miss Annersley nodded slightly, “Yes, I know Ruth,” she said very gently, she looked up as a knock on the door heralded the Security Chief, it took only a few minutes to bring him up to date.

“A number of possibilities then, Miss Annersley,” he said briskly, “First, that they went off site without passing through the Gate, and without any other form of transport than their own feet. Second, they’re on-site but staying with someone in one of the cottages or flats, third, they’re on-site and somewhere in the Grounds.”

“That seems reasonable, Mr Coates,” the Head stopped, looking across at where Kelly Stevens sat, wide eyed, watching all that was going on. Carol sat beside her with an arm around her shoulders. “Carol,” she said gently, “why don’t you take Kelly up to the prefects’ room, give her a drink? I’ll be along soon to let you know how things are progressing.”

Carol smiled, “No problem,” she lifted Kelly up too, Kelly looked over at the Head,

“You will tell me?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “I promise, Kelly, as soon as I have any news.”

The three adults waited until the two girls had left, as they disappeared Miss Wilson arrived, she was quickly informed of the problem. John faced the three women,

“From what’s been said, it seems unlikely that they have left the site, I’ll get my people searching, could you arrange for all the cottages and flats to be checked?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “We’ll start immediately,” she said.

It didn’t take long to confirm that Miss Moore and Colonel Stevens were nowhere in any of the buildings on site, the Security guards therefore started a detailed search of the grounds. Knowing that they sometimes walked down to the beach, the search started there, but nothing was found.

Don't think they have eloped as even if they decided not to take Kelly they would have anticipated the hue and cry and left a note or something at least saying not to worry...which means either they have deadfully overslept somewhere they probably shouldn't be....or they are in PERIL!!!

Lovely cliff Lesley. Razz

The night before…

Rosalind and Geoff had walked down to the sea shore and sat staring into the waves for some time. Finding a very sheltered sand dune they had sat and cuddled for a while, however this stopped when Ros started giggling.

“That can really put a fellow off, Ros,” Geoff sounded quite affronted.

Rosalind tried to swallow her giggles, “I’m sorry it’s just, this sand gets everywhere! I know this doesn’t sound very romantic but I think we’ll have to find somewhere else!”

Geoff considered for a minute, then gave a wry grin, “OK then, we’ll go back to my flat, I can drop you back here first thing tomorrow.”

Smiling the two got up and, after brushing themselves down, slowly walked back toward the car park. On the way they passed the place where the foundations for the new Boarding House were being dug. Although the entire area was surrounded with a stout fence, some six feet in height, there were breaks in the fence that allowed a person to see in. Geoff glanced casually into the hole, it was perhaps six-eight feet deep in most places, although occasionally there were smaller holes that went deeper. Rosalind looked across,

“What is it?” she asked.

Geoff looked round, “Thought I saw something,” he said quickly, “hang on a sec.” He moved closer, actually climbing the fence to get to stand directly above the pit, a puzzled expression on his face, Ros followed him. She looked down into the hole, wishing there was a moon, she could see dirt, some pieces of metal, a small excavator truck, nothing that would account for Geoff’s interest. Especially as now Geoff was kneeling down trying to see further into the pit.

“Geoff, what is it?” Rosalind repeated.

“Jesus!” the exclamation was uncharacteristic, as was the man suddenly, abruptly scrambling to his feet. He turned to the woman by his side, “we’ve got to get away from here, Ros!” he said urgently, grabbing her arm and starting to push her from the edge, “There’s a…”

Whatever else he was about to say was drowned out, the pair had been standing very close to the edge, with a muffled roar that edge collapsed, precipitating both of them into the pit and the hard ground eight feet below.

Rosalind Moore had no idea how long she was unconscious, all she knew was that she was suddenly awake. She opened her eyes, looking around her in some bewilderment. She was lying on her stomach on dirt. The dirt seemed to be everywhere, in fact, as she moved she dislodged a huge amount from her back. She didn’t particularly notice the dirt though, because as soon as she moved she was aware of a sharp stabbing pain in her right ankle. The pain felt like a red hot poker had suddenly been drawn through the middle of her ankle, for a moment it robbed her of breath and caused her to see spots before her eyes. She held herself very still, waiting for the pain to subside. Very carefully she turned onto her back and sat up. Even with only the stars to see, there was enough light for Rosalind to note that her right ankle was swollen and deformed.

“So that’s what a broken ankle looks and feels like,” she said quietly, once she had caught her breath, she swallowed a few times, blinking back the tears. Suddenly full memory returned, “Geoff?” she called, now worried that she couldn’t see him, “Geoff, where are you?”

There was complete silence, Ros looked round despairingly, where was he? There was nothing close to her except this huge mound of loose earth and… Rosalind’s eyes widened in shock as a thought occurred. Ignoring the pain from her ankle she dragged herself closer to the mound of earth and, forcing herself to her knees, started frantically digging into the earth.

“Geoff! Dammit Geoff, where are you?” The pain from her ankle was making her head spin but she forced herself to continue, throwing more and more dirt to the left and right in an attempt to reach something buried beneath it. Her search was rewarded when she suddenly came upon an arm. A short time later and Ros had succeeded in uncovering Geoff’s head and shoulders. With an almost superhuman effort she managed to drag him a little way out of the dirt, noting as she did that his head was bleeding quite badly. That effort caused her to nearly faint from the pain in her ankle and it was a while before she could continue.

Biting her lip in the hope that the pain would distract her from the agony in her ankle, Rosalind reached toward her lover’s face, she went to stem the bleeding, but instead remembered her First Aid classes and checked that his nose and mouth were clear.

After only a very quick check Rosalind calmly continued her regime – he wasn’t breathing but… thank God… he had a pulse. The routine she had practised so often was simple to follow, gritting her teeth she knelt up and started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Breathing into Geoff’s mouth and watching that his chest rose in time.

She seemed to be doing this for hours, but it was probably barely a minute before, suddenly, Geoff starting coughing. He was breathing for himself! She forced herself to stay conscious despite the pain in her ankle increasing and looked at the wound on his head, it was still bleeding. Ros searched in Geoff’s pockets and found a handkerchief, by no stretch of the imagination could it be considered a clean white one – the dirt had stained it too much – but, she shrugged, beggars can’t be choosers! She held it to the wound, a thin jagged cut. As she did Geoff suddenly opened his eyes,

“Hello!” he said.

ROFL ROFL

*also squeaking!* I went there in July! And yes Lisa, I know what you mean about the raspberry sweets - we had a bag of mixed boiled and I made them last for weeks after we got home because I didn't want to have the last one Crying or Very sad the toffee and the mandarin/tangerine-y sort of flavour were nice too.

(and I've been to Philip Island, though only for lunch and we didn't see the penguins, and been on Puffing Billy. Not been to the Amaze place though - where is it?)

Catching up gradually, loving it as usual Lesley!

“Hello yourself!” Rosalind said softly, and tears sprang up in her eyes.

“Hey, don’t cry,” Geoff said quickly, he struggled to sit up and suddenly went a ghastly greyish-white colour and lay back down again. He swallowed quickly a few times in succession, “Feel sick,” he mumbled.

Ros quickly turned his head to one side and Geoff vomited, retching until his stomach was empty. After a time he turned his head back and smiled wryly.

“Sorry about that,” he said quickly, “Complete waste of that French dinner we had!”

“Idiot!” Rosalind smiled slightly, “Must be because you’ve hit your head,” she continued, she wiped his mouth with the handkerchief, “You’re probably concussed.” She shifted slightly and the pain from her ankle made her yell out.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Geoff tried again to sit up and had exactly the same reaction.

Rosalind pushed him flat again, “Lie still you fool,” she said, probably a little sharper than she intended, “I’ve got enough problems staying conscious myself, I can do without you adding to the problem!”

Geoff looked across, seeing the worry in her eyes, he reached across to hold her hand, “Sorry Miss Moore,” he said contritely, “I promise I’ll behave, honest!”

Rosalind slowly manoeuvred herself off of her knees and sat beside Geoff with her legs out-stretched. Even in the short time she had been awake her right ankle had swollen alarmingly.

“You’d better!” she said in a mock stern voice, “Because the pair of us look like having to stay here for the rest of the night! Neither of us can stand up, let alone get out of this pit!”

Geoff’s face suddenly paled again, but this time it was a reaction to her words, “But we’ve got to get out!” he said quickly, “That’s what I was telling you just before the side of the pit fell in. You don’t know what I saw in the pit.”

Rosalind looked puzzled and slightly alarmed at his reaction, “What did you see?”

“I saw a shell,” was the prompt response, “not a sea shell, an explosive one, a bomb!”

Who's giving in?

There was a stunned silence, Rosalind stared at Geoff, eventually she spoke, “A-a-are you sure?”

Geoff shook his head then stopped quickly as the slight movement was enough to cause him to blanche, he swallowed a few times, “No, I’m not sure,” he said faintly, “that’s why I was trying to get closer, so I could see it more clearly. Didn’t expect the damn sides to collapse into the pit!”

Rosalind gave a rueful laugh, “Yes, well, I don’t think we should have been standing on the side there!” she smiled, “Well I still can’t see how we’re going to get out until the morn…” she stopped, fumbling in her pocket, “Wait a second,” she said excitedly, pulling her mobile from the pocket, “I forget about this!” she brandished it in front of the man triumphantly and proceeded to switch it on.

“NOOOO!” Geoff suddenly launched himself at Rosalind, wrenching the phone from her and throwing it across the pit. The effort caused him to lose consciousness once more and, when he came round, it was to discover he was lying with his head in Rosalind’s lap.

“Are you alright?” Rosalind sounded more than a little shocked.

Geoff went to nod, thought better of it and gave a very slight smile, “Yes, I’m OK,“ he said faintly, his face white once more, he took a few more deep breathes then looked up at the woman, “I haven’t gone crazy,” he said quickly, “it’s just that you can’t use your mobile.”

“Why not?”

Geoff swallowed again then looked Rosalind straight in the eye, “Some shells can be detonated by radio signals.”

“I see,” Rosalind said calmly,

Geoff looked at her sharply, “You’re being very sensible about this,” he said quickly.

Rosalind smiled a little, “What else can I be, Geoff? Neither of us can move much, we’re stuck in a pit and will be until they start looking for us sometime tomorrow, and now you say we’re sharing the pit with a bomb!” She laughed before continuing, “Would you rather I had hysterics?”

Geoff smiled, “No,” he said simply, “I rather like you as you are, more of a partner, not someone that I have to support all the time! Must be something you teach at this School.”

“When we get out of this,” Rosalind said, a smile on her lips, “ask me about the phrase ‘spineless jellyfish’, it’s a phrase that was used a lot when we were in Switzerland!”

Geoff frowned, “But surely,” he began, “a jellyfish is always spineless? It’s an invertebrate?”

Rosalind leant down to kiss him, “You just had to be there Geoff,” she said simply.

There was silence for a time, then Rosalind bit her lip slightly and spoke, “Geoff? Do you know what to look for, to tell if this shell is live?”

“Yes, of course!” the man replied, “but I can’t even lift my head off your lap at the moment…”

“Yes, I know that,” Ros replied quickly, “and I can’t stand…but I can crawl. I can go over there, check it out. If you tell me what to look for.” She looked across at where Geoff had pointed out the shell, it lay, half buried, some 20 feet away.

“But your ankle…”

“Yes, I know,” Ros swallowed slightly, “It will hurt, but I think I can do it. And we need to know really, don’t we?”

Geoff nodded slightly then hissed as his head reeled, “Yes,” he whispered, “we do.”

Rosalind nodded and slowly moved out from beneath Geoff’s head, “Pity there’s nothing I can use to tie it up,” she said, indicating her ankle, “We always used a handkerchief when in Switzerland.”

“Well you can use this, I think my head‘s stopped bleeding now,” Geoff proffered the filthy , mud and blood-stained rag.

Rosalind shook her head, “It’ll not give any support,” she said smiling, “and anyway, I think I’d rather not put that anywhere near me!”

She gritted her teeth then rolled herself over onto her knees, the pain from her ankle caused her to hiss and tears sprang from her eyes. After only seconds on her knees she rolled back into a seated position. A minute spent catching her breath then, “Change of plan,” she whispered, “I’ll move over there on my backside!”

Slowly but surely Rosalind Moore moved herself closer to the item thought to be a shell, every time she pushed back with her good leg she called out, the broken ankle sending waves of agony up her right leg. Before she had covered even half the distance she had tears rolling down her cheeks. She didn’t allow it to stop her though, just gritted her teeth and continued. Lying on his back, Geoff had turned his head to watch her progress, that small amount of movement causing him to lose consciousness for almost thirty seconds.

“O-OK, Geoff, I’m here,” Rosalind’s voice was faint but determined, “What do you need to know?”

Geoff thought quickly, frantically trying to cudgel his injured head into clear thinking, “Don’t touch it, Ros, and try not to dislodge any dirt from beneath it.” Geoff swallowed as a wave of nausea hit, then continued, “Along one side, near the cone, there is a set of numbers, read them out.”

Ros searched carefully, having difficulty seeing in the starlight, remembering suddenly she pulled her keys from her pocket and found the tiny light on the key ring, it proved sufficient. “The numbers are as follows,” she read out the figures.

Geoff relaxed slightly, “OK, good, it’s not a trembler, that is it won’t go off if moved. Have a look at the cone itself, what colour is it?” He waited for the reply, “Right, now get away from it Ros, because it’s live!”

“Can’t I do anything? Disarm it or something?”

“Only if your name is James Bond,” Geoff replied quickly, “or Tom Cruise from Mission Impossible!”

He waited while Rosalind slowly made her way back to sit beside him, after sitting and catching her breath for some minutes she looked across, “It can’t be disarmed?”

“Yes, but only by professionals, Ros, we’re going to just have to wait for morning, it might be a dud anyway, I thought the Army were supposed to have cleared this land.”

“They were, do you think they just missed this one then?”

“Maybe, or it was buried so deep their sensors didn’t register it,” Geoff looked across at the woman sat next to him, she was extremely pale and breathing fast. “Ros, lie down for a while,” he said gently, “And find some way to raise that ankle.”

“Shock,” Ros mumbled, “I’m in shock?”

“First stages,” Geoff said, “Look, lie next to me you can put your leg on top of the mound of earth.”

Rosalind did as she was told and, to Geoff’s relief, seemed to find it more comfortable, at least her colour improved and her breathing slowed. She turned her head so she was staring directly into Geoff’s eyes.

“Next time you think you see something in a pit,” she began, “just ignore it, OK?”

Geoff smiled, “Promise,” he replied, he reached for her hand.

Ros looked down at their hands then back into his eyes, “And there’ll be none of that! Neither of us are fit!” She grinned.

Geoff laughed, “Oh you are wonderful!” He stopped, collecting his thoughts, when he spoke again it was with the utmost solemnity, “I love you Rosalind Moore.”

Apologies if this is a bit mushy!

Rosalind laughed too, a little ruefully, “Geoff, my love, you do pick your moments!”

Geoff attempted to raise himself on his elbows but sank back onto his back as the nausea returned, “Perhaps,” he admitted quietly, “But I’ve always taken ages to tell someone how I really feel.” He smiled at Ros before continuing, “My wife, Sue? We were a couple from when she was sixteen, I was eighteen, everyone could see we were meant to be together, but we didn’t get married for another eight years.”

“You had to make a living first, get on in your profession?” Rosalind said gently.

Geoff shook his head, then stopped as the movement caused his vision to spin, “No, I’d joined the army, was sponsored to university, it wouldn’t have been a good idea then, but by the time I was twenty-three I was a full Lieutenant, the Army likes its people to be married, more stability.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I didn’t ask!” Geoff’s voice was full of regret, he swallowed slightly then continued, “In the end Sue got fed up of waiting, 1988 was a Leap Year, she asked me on February 29th, I’d no sooner said yes then she was telling me about all the arrangements, we married that same Autumn.” He turned to look at Rosalind, “I’m not telling you this to make you feel bad, Ros,” he said earnestly, “But to try and explain that, because of my failure to ask, Sue and I were only married eight years, it could have been for far longer.”

“I have no problem with what your saying Geoff, I knew that you had been married before, that you were a widow.” Ros replied, “But I sense you’re trying to say something else now, what is it?”

There was silence for some time, when Geoff finally replied it was in a very quiet voice, “This is a ridiculous situation, Ros. We, both of us, have been badly hurt, and are unlikely to be found before morning. We’re sharing this pit with a bomb too, for God’s sake! But at least it means that I’ll say this. Rosalind, I love you, Kelly loves you. I think that you love both of us, too.” He stopped for so long that Ros sat up slightly, looking down into his face, he smiled.

“Ros, I don’t want to make the same mistake that I made with Sue, I don’t want so many wasted years. I know we’ve only known each other for three months, but I think, I hope, that’s long enough.” He stared directly into Ros’s eyes and held her hand, “I know this isn’t the appropriate time or place, I know I should be kneeling in front of you. I can’t do that.” He laughed slightly, and Rosalind smiled, waiting for him to continue, “Rosalind Moore, I love you, I want to be with you, we belong together, would you, will you marry me?”

ROFL Laughing ROFL Laughing I'm sooooo good to you!

Geoff finished his proposal with an air of relief, that he had finally managed to say the words. There was silence, it went on for a long time.

"Ros," Geoff's voice was a little shaky, "Ros, please talk to me, please tell me I haven't made a dreadful mistake about the two of us." He turned his head slightly to look at the woman sat beside him.

Rosalind Moore sat there, her face anguished, she turned to look Geoff straight in the eye, "Geoff, please believe me," she said very quietly, "I do love you, and I think I'd like to marry you, but..."

"But? What's the problem then?" Geoff was slightly less panicky now, she'd said she wanted to marry him, but?

Rosalind sighed, "Oh Geoff, I know it's selfish, I know I should quite happily give it all up. But I don't think I can!" Seeing the man was still confused she explained further, "I love my job, Geoff, I love this School, all the people I work with, the fact that I'm Head of my own Department. I'm sorry, I know it's wrong, but I don't want to give it up!"

"Ros, what are you talking about?" Geoff was frowning slightly, trying to understand, "Who said anything about giving up your job? I wouldn't ever expect that, it's part of what makes you, you."

Rosalind stared across at him, hope flaring in her eyes, "You mean, it's not an automatic choice then?" she whispered.

"Of course not," Geoff said decisively, "hasn't been for years. Now are you going to answer my question?"

As a reply Ros kissed him full on the lips, after some minutes they parted, "I take it that's a 'Yes' then?" Geoff asked.

Lesley, I think it can safely be said that mushiness was avoided.

I was half expecting the proposal to be cut off by an explosion which probably helped! Laughing

I'm glad the bomb didn't go off during the proposal, or the answer.

It would be much better if it exploded after they had become betrothed.

Bomb Bomb Bomb

Nothing mushy about it though, Lesley, and more convincing than than some CS engagements,

This is lovely. So much more romantic than being a solid lump of comfort. Oh and Lesley you wonderful creature, once they are finally found, don't forget to notify WorkSafe Victoria immediately (as well as the Bomb disposal squad!).

After all, you wouldn't want The Real Chalet School being prosecuted for breaching occupational health and safety legislation.

Would you?
