Hi everyone! As promised, the next instalment of the RCS series! Anyone new to this may wish to read the previous four chapters - you'll find them in the drabble-o-ram or, if you'd prefer them without yibble pm me your email address and I'll send them across.

This one starts, surprisingly, on Monday 18th October 2004, the first day of the new term. And Miss Annersley is visiting her GP...

“And this injury was obtained how, Miss Annersley?” The serious young doctor finished examining his patient while asking the question.

“It occurred when I hit my head on a wall, doctor,” Miss Annersley replied promptly, “I was unconscious for about three minutes, I'm told.”

“Any symptoms since then?”

“Other than a very mild headache, nothing.”

The doctor made some notes on the paperwork in front of him, he looked across at the woman sat opposite, “Well there doesn’t appear to be any problems,” he smiled, “One thing, though, have you experienced any other injuries to the head in the last few months?”

Miss Annersley looked somewhat nonplussed at this question; she seemed to be thinking deeply, the doctor waited,

“Well, yes, doctor, there have been some other incidents,”

The doctor raised an eyebrow but said nothing, Miss Annersley continued,

“I had an injury to the jaw during half term,”

“Injury to the jaw,” the doctor wrote as he spoke, “And how did that occur?”

“Er, well someone hit me.” Miss Annersley said quickly, before the doctor could react she continued, “I also had an injury to my right eye.”

“Your eye? And how did that…?”

“Someone hit me,” Miss Annersley interrupted, flushing slightly.

The doctor stopped writing and looked across at the woman on the other side of the desk, had he been asked he would have said that this woman was the least likely to ever sustain a blow from someone. The woman held herself with such dignity and authority it was difficult to see how anyone would have dared attempt to injure her.

“I see,” he said eventually, “So, what you’re telling me, Miss Annersley, is that, apart from this injury, when you hit your head on a wall, you have also sustained two other separate blows to the head?”

“Er, well actually doctor, there was another occasion.” It seemed Miss Annersley said this with the greatest reluctance.

The doctor put his pen down and stared at the woman, “Another blow to the head?”

“Well, not exactly a blow,” Miss Annersley said hesitantly, “More a case of my head hitting a wall again.”

“Tell me, Miss Annersley, have your eyes been tested recently? It’s not usual for people to walk into walls.”

“I have perfect eyesight doctor!” Miss Annersley was somewhat indignant; “On both occasions that I hit my head on a wall it was due to a third party.”

The doctor took a deep breath and sat forward in his chair, “Let me see if I understand you correctly, Miss Annersley,” he said with the greatest of patience. “In the last few months you have sustained four head injuries, a blow to the jaw, a blow to the eye and twice hit your head on a wall. A third party being responsible for each of the injuries.”

“That is correct, doctor,” Miss Annersley was looking as though she wished the ground would open up and swallow her.

“The same third party?”

“Well no,” Miss Annersley said calculatingly, “The blow to the eye was caused by a different person.”

“But the other three?”

“All caused by the same person.”

The doctor leant forward further, “Forgive me, Miss Annersley, but is this person an enemy of yours?”

Miss Annersley looked shocked, “Of course not, doctor, she’s my closest friend!”

The doctor fell off of his chair.

Nice to see everyone again - except these avatars! Embarassed Shocked Laughing

Back at the School Miss Wilson heard Miss Annersley enter her Study. After a few minutes she tapped on the connecting door and entered.

"So how did it go then, with the doctor? Everything alright?" She noticed that the Head was a little flushed.

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend, "Oh everything went exceptionally well, Nell." Her voice positively dripped sarcasm.

Miss Wilson frowned, "What's the matter, what went wrong."

"Oh nothing much, Nell," Miss Annersley was halfway through typing out a reply to some email, and her fingers appeared to be hitting the keys with far more force than was strictly necessary. "Dr Michaels has a wonderful impression of the pair of us. He thinks I'm an idiot and you are a thug!"

Miss Wilson looked quite scandalised, "How rude," she said quickly, "I do not believe I am a thug!"

There was a pregnant pause during which the Deputy Head gradually became aware of a laser-like intensity stare from her friend, she gulped, "And of course you're not an idiot, Hilda, that goes without saying!"

Miss Annersley continued staring at her friend for a few more seconds before acknowledging the response, "Hmmmm," she said before glancing back at her computer screen.

Miss Wilson permitted herself a tiny sigh of relief.

She disappeared into her own Study and returned, a few minutes later, bearing two mugs of coffee and her biscuit tin. “Come on Hilda, have a break!” she ordered softly.

The Head looked across and smiled slightly, the tension leaving her shoulders, as she moved across to sit at the small oval table. She took one of the mugs from her friend and the pair sat in silence for a minute then,

“You know that none of those blows was meant, don’t you Hilda?” Miss Wilson sounded quite concerned, “I mean, for two of them I had no idea it was you, and the other one, well I was just pushing you out from under that scaffolding.”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Of course, Nell,” she replied, “I just felt such a fool when having to describe them to that doctor. He’s probably got such a wonderful impression of me now!” She sipped her coffee then looked up, “Any messages or calls?”

Miss Wilson nodded, “Madge called, to wish us well for the new term. Says she hoped we had a good break!”

“What did you tell her?”

“That we had a very relaxing time, Hilda, didn’t think she needed to know the details!” Miss Wilson grinned.

“True, we’ve got enough problems trying to prevent Ruth and the others discovering the truth. I’m sure they don’t believe your story about helping to change a wheel on the Princess Royal’s landrover.”

“Best I could come up with at the time,” the Deputy Head replied. “Still, Madge believed me, oh and she said that, if it’s OK with you, she’s scheduled a board meeting this evening nine pm, here at the School. Said if it was inconvenient to let her know.”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “Not a problem, as far as I can tell, although I hope it’s not going to be for long. First day of term is always fraught and both of us have a lot of work to catch upon.”

“She didn’t say it was anything special, just that the normal monthly meeting on the first Saturday of the month was obviously postponed as we were unavailable. She didn’t think it would take longer than an hour at most.”

“Excellent,” The Head drained her cup and picked out a chocolate biscuit, she stood up, “Thanks for the drink, Nell, now I must get on,” she looked at her watch, “It’s almost ten now, pupils will start arriving from lunchtime and I’ve got mountains of things to do!”

Miss Wilson also stood, “So have I!” she said with feeling, “I’ll see you for lunch.”

Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Oh good grief! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

The morning passed quickly and the two Heads joined everyone else for lunch in the large dining room. Those of the Staff not performing escort duty were there and all the Prefects. In addition a number of the Middles had arrived back over the weekend and the House Staff had been back, busy ensuring that the dormitories were ready for the influx of girls. Miss Annersley smiled round at everyone and nodded to Karen that she could begin serving.

A few minutes after everyone had started eating, Miss Dene appeared in the dining room, “Sorry I’m late,“ she began, “Hilda, I've just had a call from Vida Armitage, she’s senior escort mistress for the flight from the UK. The flight was held up in Singapore due to a severe electrical storm, it also knocked out all communications. Anyway, it’s estimated that the UK flight will touch down at Melbourne a little after 4pm.”

“More than two hours late?” This from Miss Wilson.

Rosalie Dene nodded, “I’ve contacted the coach company and advised them of the delay, there’s no problem. It’s unlikely that they’ll get here before six though.”

“Thank you Rosalie,” the Head said quietly, she turned to Mrs McLeod, “Jennie, by the time they get here most of the girls will be fit only for a quick meal then bed.”

“Understood, Hilda,” Jennie nodded, “We can leave unpacking until tomorrow, they will have enough in their overnight bags until then. My people will have enough to do, getting the Australian contingent settled!”

The afternoon was busy, a normal boarding school, in the twenty-first century, tended now to take students only from fairly close; however the Real Chalet School had pupils and staff from a number of different countries, in particular a large contingent came from the British Isles. Next term this was likely to increase even further with the first of the scholarship girls, arranged with Microsoft, coming from the States as well as UK and Australia, and a further ten from Germany. In addition there were, of course, those from Australia itself, but even some of these pupils had to travel great distances, and needed to be met from flights. Plus there were those of different nationalities that had chosen to make their home in Australia - including themselves and the Prefects - Miss Annersley suddenly thought with a smile.

As the School catered for all ages from 3 - 18 there were a large number of girls to consider and ensure that they arrived, therefore it was a busy time for all the Mistresses and the Prefects until it could finally, just before seven pm, be said with authority, that everyone expected had arrived. Everyone was immediately sent to a late supper, prior to the meal starting Miss Annersley rose to address everyone.

“Good Evening girls, and welcome to the Christmas Term.” she smiled, “Now, I’ll not keep you as I’m sure you are all hungry and tired, so just to say that, directly after supper all Kindergarten and Juniors must go directly to bed, Middles must go at eight and Seniors at nine.” She looked at the disappointed faces, especially those of the Seniors, she laughed, “No, they are not new bedtimes, only for tonight, to try and allow all of you to catch up on your sleep! You will also have a lie-in tomorrow for the same reason, however if you wish to get up at your normal time you may- just be careful not to awaken anyone still sleeping!”

Miss Wilson also rose, “Just in case any of you were concerned,” she began, “We have two late arrivals - Evvy Van Alden and Janetta Mackenzie will be back tomorrow. And we have another ten girls arriving tomorrow - Miss Walker’s new class.”

Miss Annersley continued, "That's all for now, girls, we'll speak to you tomorrow morning."

Yippee - it's back! Though I was already wibbling at the intro - I thought it was particularly mean to introduce a cliff before the story began. (I'd also forgotten that Hilda had been told to visit her own GP)

Wonderfully funny begining though - another treat in store.

#38:  Author: LauraLocation: London (ish) PostPosted: Mon Oct 18, 2004 3:27 pm

The only problem is that I'm waiting anxiously for the arrival of the first big cliff... it's quite shocking that we've gone 4 posts without one, really! Is that a record??!

So, if Lesley is posting at the approximate rate of 1 post every couple of hours or so ... that's an average 12 posts per day (cos you don't need to sleep do you, Lesley?!) hmmm
*counts on fingers*
I should be able to look forward to at least 35-40 posts when I get back on Thursday Very Happy

You realise I might expire from terminal embarrassment here, don't you! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing My God, what a reputation to live up to!

After supper the junior part of the school were ushered off to bed, the Middles, aware that they only had 30 minutes disappeared quickly to their Common Rooms and the Seniors followed. Miss Wilson stood up,

“I’m going to grab some of the Prefects, Hilda, try and finish outfitting the Chemistry Lab.” She walked over to speak to Alison Martin and got another four of the Prefects to join her.

The Head looked across as her friend was leaving the dining room, “Remember the Board Meeting, Nell,” she called, Miss Wilson waved in reply. Miss Annersley looked round, a number of the Staff, mainly those who looked after the Juniors and Kindergarten, had left at the same time as the girls, but the rest were still there. She smiled around at them,

“Well I’m afraid my Study is no longer big enough to hold the entire Staff now,” she said, “But if you would care to invite me to have a coffee in the Staff Room I have a large amount of Scottish shortbread that is begging to be eaten!”

Miss Derwent stood up, “Consider yourself invited Hilda!” she said with a grin.

Later, when most of the girls were asleep, those Board Members that were not part of the Real Chalet School Staff, arrived. The meeting was held in one of the lecture theatres where the furniture could easily be arranged for a formal meeting. It was only short, barely 30 minutes in total, and just served to update everyone on what was happening within the company. Madge Russell was very quick in detailing her recent conversation with the head of Barker Industries and in replying to concerns from Mollie about whether the large conglomerate was seeking a take-over.

“I don’t think so,” Madge said thoughtfully, “They seemed genuinely to wish only to be friendly. Whether that will continue or not I don’t know. Any particular reason, Mollie?”

Mollie Mackenzie, newly returned from her son’s wedding shook her head, “Nothing particular, Madge,” she said, “Only that I was speaking to the RCS Industries Accountant this morning, you know, Neil Hillier? He said he’d noticed a little more trading on the RCS stock, as if someone were buying a little. It wasn’t a lot though, he wasn’t worried.”

Madge looked a little perturbed, “I’ll speak to him tomorrow,” she said, “see if he thinks we should do something.”

The rest of the meeting proceeded without incident, then, just as she was winding up, Madge mentioned one other item,

“I know it’s a little early,” she said, “But I thought I’d mention it now, allow everyone long enough to think about it. The two year span for our eight non-permanent members of the Board will be up in March.” She smiled at the eight, “Now I have absolutely no problems with any of the eight, they have all performed wonderfully, but we will have to consider how we will be electing new people before March next year. Just felt I’d leave that with you until the next meeting.”

Joey Maynard leant forward, “The date for the next meeting will be the first Saturday of November - the Sixth. Hilda may we use these facilities again? As so many of the board are your Staff it is easiest.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “That’s fine, those of my Staff, ensure that you are not rostered off that weekend,” she said softly, “This is counted as work, not free time!”

The meeting broke up on that note, after the busy day either travelling or working at the School, most of the Staff deciding to have an early night. After waving goodbye to Madge and Joey, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson first visited the Staff room to say goodnight, then dropped in to speak to Karen. The Domestic Bursar ran all the catering, cleaning and laundry within the School - a similar post to the one she had held when in the original chalet school. She, and those of the Domestic Staff that lived on-site, had rooms in a separate boarding house, close to the main School building. Although probably not quite as large as the ones for the Teaching Staff, the rooms, even for the lowliest of the staff, were more than suitable, with en-suite facilities and access to laundry etc. As live-in staff, all meals were also provided and their dining room, next to the kitchens, offered the same food as that provided for everyone else.

Miss Annersley informed Karen that breakfast was to be served an hour later as everyone was to be allowed an extra hour in bed. After some minutes of chatting with the voluble Austrian woman, and allowing themselves to be persuaded to have a coffee, (Karen’s coffee still tasted better than any other in the world!) the two friends made their way back to their cottage. Neither of them took long before retiring for the night.

Lesley, I have just begun a very demanding history degree, and am feeling somewhat out of my depth with the amount of reading I have to do. Given these circumstances, I think it's very inconsiderate of you to start an excellent, compelling and unmissable drabble/epic, as obviously I shall have to abandon my studies in order to keep an eye on the CBB twenty four hours a day for fear of missing a new installment.

The following morning, after a late breakfast, the entire School gathered for the first official Assembly of the new term. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson stood to one side of the raised platform at the front of the Hall, softly chatting, whilst waiting for the School to file in. Once the last of the girls had settled they both walked to the centre of the stage. All the girls stood up.

Miss Annersley stood at the lectern while Miss Wilson sat just behind her, the Head smiled, “Sit down everyone,” she said, then waited as everyone did so; “A belated welcome to the Christmas term, everyone! Although I welcomed you last night, I think some of you were far too tired to listen properly. I hope that is not the case this morning!” She chuckled as many, in particular the Middles, hastened to assure her that they were wide awake, no doubt afraid of another early bedtime.

“Never fear girls,” Miss Annersley smiled, “You may return to your normal bedtimes tonight! Although, of course, any of you that still feels tired may go to bed early!” She waited while a subdued laugh spread around the Upper School, then continued,

“Now, this is only a short term, but an eventful one. Those of you taking exams will have to work hard, but at least the exams will be over well before the end of the year. Half Term is the weekend of Friday 12th November to Sunday 14th November and will consist only of three days,” she waited while a few groans subsided, “There will not be enough time for many of you to go home, unless you live very locally, however, as we have some special expeditions planned for the weekend I cannot see many wanting to leave the School!”

At this there was a minor cheer, then the Head Girl stood up, “Miss Annersley?” she began, “May we know the plans for the weekend? I mean it’s not really fair that only the Staff know the plans, is it?”

The Head smiled, “Why no, Alison, that wouldn’t be fair. But you will be pleased to know that not many of the Staff know either!” she turned to her partner, “Miss Wilson, how many of the Staff know the plans for Half-Term?”

The Deputy Head frowned, thinking hard, then, with a slight grin she replied, “Why Miss Annersley, I believe that only two of the Staff are aware of the plans. The Head and Deputy Head!”

Miss Annersley smiled over at Alison, “There, it’s completely fair, Alison. The Staff do not know either!”

Alison Martin gave a rueful grin and sat down again. Then, from the seat next to her, no less a person than the Senior Mistress, Miss Derwent, stood up,

“May I ask, Miss Annersley, if you will inform us, well in advance, of these plans?”

“But of course, Miss Derwent!” Miss Annersley sounded shocked, “We wouldn’t dream of teasing and tormenting you for long. We’ll be releasing details soon, won’t we Miss Wilson?” She smiled across at her partner.

Miss Wilson laughed, “Certainly, Miss Annersley,“ she replied, “Oh, I would say… before the 12th of November. Definitely!”

#116:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Tue Oct 19, 2004 6:36 pm

My apologies for lack of posting - check out COT for why.
With thanks to Lulie. Laughing

There was a soft laugh at this and everyone had to be satisfied, aware that any further questioning was likely to get only teasing in return.

Miss Annersley held her hand up for silence, she then relinquished the lectern to Miss Wilson who began to speak,

“Now, as this is the Christmas term, we will be having a Christmas Play, however, we will be departing somewhat from tradition in that the Play will be performed by the Kindergarten, only,” she smiled at the babies, “they will be entertaining the rest of us. Do not feel that the rest of you have missed out, however, there will be a Carol Concert and the Music Staff have a number of new carols to teach you, both traditional and new. In addition there will be Christmas Parties for the Juniors, Middles and Seniors.” The Deputy Head paused there as a wave of clapping swept round the Hall, she smiled again, “Oh and I shouldn’t forget, there will also be a pantomime, the Staff will be producing one for you, and we will be playing all the parts!”

At this there was another loud murmur of voices and some applause, the two Heads smiled and waited until the noise had died down, Miss Wilson continued, “And one final thing, there are two additions to the main curriculum starting this term, firstly, for all Middles and Seniors, a weekly lesson in Current Affairs, in particular looking at any innovations or concerns with regard to health and welfare. Then, for everyone, we will be staring First Aid courses for all, even the Juniors.”

Miss Annersley took over, “There is just one other item,” she began, “As you know two of the Middles are expected back later today, however we are also expecting ten new girls. These girls are all from the local area, as yet we have not accepted any from abroad, although that may come with time. These girls will be members of a separate form known as Special Sixth. It will have a different meaning to the Special Sixth when with the original school. These girls are all people who require additional help with their school work. The form mistress will be Miss Walker and I will allow her to explain further.” The Head beckoned to Lulie Walker sat nearby.

Miss Walker walked over to the lectern and swallowed slightly, “The ten girls all have different forms of medical conditions or illnesses that have meant that normal mainstream schooling has not been suitable. They require far more help and attention and I will have at least two other staff helping me. Some of the girls also have physical disabilities, two are in wheelchairs, another walks with crutches, yet another has speech problems. However, all of them are over sixteen and classed as Seniors. At the moment they are attending the Real Chalet School as day girls only, this may change in the future, depending on how this pilot class goes. Outside of the class they will join the Seniors for Breaks and meals, they should therefore be treated as Seniors.” Miss Walker smiled across at the Head before sitting down again.

Miss Annersley walked back to the lectern and gazed around at all the girls, “Just to warn everyone,“ she said softly, “These girls are Seniors of this school, if any girl in this room treats these new girls with anything less than respect, if they are rude to them or in any way maliciously tease, mock or ridicule any of them. That girl will be asked to explain her reasoning either to Miss Wilson or myself.”

Miss Wilson stood up and walked over to stand beside her friend, she smiled, “And if you have been particularly nasty,” she continued, “You may be asked to explain to both of us at the same time.”

There was a concerted gulp from the girls as the meaning of the Heads’ words became clear.

Seated beside her form, Miss Burnett leant forward to whisper into Miss Moore’s ear, “Now that should stop them!”

Rosalind Moore smiled and leant back to reply, “It certainly would me!”

Good to see it back Lesley, but on the cliff side, while I'd love to get a few more people to teach abseiling to, I'm not sure you can write drabbles without cliffs Razz

(I agree with whoever said that they recognised people by their avatars - I'm having to read the names again now! Shocked )

Little bit for now - more later! Laughing

The Head finished the Assembly by dismissing everyone to their form room. The timetable was suspended until the afternoon to allow time for everyone to get unpacked and therefore neither Miss Annersley nor Miss Wilson had any class to take. As they strolled over to the Admin block together, Miss Wilson was deep in thought,

“Hilda, do you think it was a good idea, allowing Ruth and Kathie to take on producing the pantomime?”

The Head looked across at her friend, “They managed all the time we were in Switzerland, Nell,” she began, “I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

“Oh I’m sure they can manage,” Miss Wilson replied, “It’s just, this is going to be a Staff effort, to entertain the girls, and you’ve just handed over control after saying that all the Staff will be in it.”

Miss Annersley thought for a moment, “You think they may design particular roles for the pair of us?” she asked worriedly.

“I think it’s almost a certainty, my dear!” came the response, “And we’ve not helped ourselves by winding everyone up about Half Term!”

“Ah, oh dear. We may have made a small error of judgement there!”

oh, the possibilities of pantomime... the sixth form at my school were always responsible for an annual panto, usually to include the staff... sadly we couldn't get them ALL to be in it, but my year managed to get together a superb cast of willing volunteers... including the head, who for some reason always liked to play the villain...

Hmm, very possibly - especially as I can't see the flat tyre story being believed and with all that teasing going on. Look forward to the pantomime, but somehow think we could be in for a roler-coaster ride before we get there...

Thank you Lesley, look forward to the next bit! Kiss

I have been out trying to sort out my bank/building society details post having purse stolen.

The first few days of term proceeded without incident, both the Head and Deputy Head were there to welcome the new girls when they arrived, and Miss Walker was able to report that they seemed to be settling in. Of course it was only early days yet, and no one was under any illusions about possible problems in the future.

On the Wednesday evening Miss Annersley joined a number of other Staff in visiting the State Prison for the first of the regular sessions providing instruction in basic literacy for the inmates. There to meet them was the Governor of the prison, Mrs Knight and her Senior Officer, Miss Shaw.

“We were not expecting so many of you, Miss Annersley,” the Governor said as she moved toward the head, hand outstretched, “However it is fortunate as there has been a great deal of interest in this course.”

Miss Annersley shook hands with both women, “I will not be able to come every week,” she explained, “But I will be here on at least a monthly basis, may I introduce my Staff, this is Miss Derwent, my Senior Mistress and Head of the English Department, Miss Ferrars, Mrs McLeod and Ms Barber. Miss Derwent and Mrs McLeod both have qualifications in English, however, while the others’ qualifications are mainly in Maths and Geography they have more than enough knowledge for basic classes.”

The two prison staff greeted the four warmly, “I’m sure we will be able to use all of your skills,” Miss Shaw said quickly, “There has been a great deal of interest in these classes.”

The women were taken over to the Education Block and introduced to the women. In total there were more than fifty women there, Miss Derwent took charge, immediately dividing the large number into smaller groups, enough for each of the four mistresses to manage. They then asked all the women to try to fill in a form, as a way to ascertain how much knowledge they had.

One young woman, barely twenty years old, stood up at this, “I didn’t think there’d be exams!” she said, “I’m off!”

She moved toward the door, Miss Shaw looked across and would have stopped her but for Miss Annersley’s hand on her arm, “Wait, Miss Shaw,” she said, “Allow my Staff to work.”

Miss Ferrars caught up with the woman, “Hi, don’t go just yet,” she said brightly, she looked at the name on the woman’s badge, “Your name is Richards, right? What’s your first name?”

“Known by your last name in prison,”

Kathie Ferrars shook her head, “Not in here,” she said, “In here we are treating you like our own students, so we’ll use your first name, be a little more friendly.” She smiled and the woman gave a half-smile back.

“Name’s Mel,” she said gruffly, “And I’m not doing any exams, they only show everyone how dumb I am.”

Kathie Ferrars shook her head, “No, that’s not the reason for the tests. They are there so we can see the level people have reached, so we can teach more effectively. You want to learn how to read and write, don’t you?”

The woman stared at the floor for a while, “Teachers at my school said I was just thick,” she said gruffly, “Said I couldn’t learn anything,”

“I don’t believe that, Mel, I’ve never yet found someone that I couldn’t teach, so long as they were willing to learn. Will you give it a trial?”

Mel looked down at the floor for a time, “You can teach me?”

“I can, just give me a chance.” Kathie Ferrars was positive.

“OK I’ll give it a try, but I’m not doing any exams,”

“No exams, that’s fine.” Miss Ferrars promised, she walked with the woman back to the class.

Miss Shaw looked across at Miss Annersley, “Your Staff know their job.”

“Of course,” the Head smiled, she then looked round quickly as someone called her name, “Cherry? What are you doing here?”

Cherry Elliott smiled across at Miss Annersley, “I signed up for the lessons,” she grinned.

Hilda Annersley moved across to stand beside Cherry, in a low voice, so as not to be heard by any of the prison officers, she spoke, “Cherry, I know very well that you have no difficulties reading and writing. If any of the officers discover you are here fraudulently you could be in trouble!”

Cherry spoke again, “I volunteered to help out the teachers, Hilda, Miss Shaw said I could. I thought you’d be pleased to see me.” She sounded a little upset.

Miss Annersley drew the girl to her and hugged her, “Of course I’m pleased to see you, I just didn’t want you getting in any trouble. I’ve already got Saturday December 11th marked down you know?”

“You have?” Cherry replied while returning the hug,

“I have, it says in bold red letters that I’ve got to pick you up from outside the prison,” Miss Annersley smiled at the girl, “I don’t want you doing anything to change that!”

Cherry smiled again, “No fear! I got your postcards,” she said, “from England and Scotland. I thought they looked lovely, have you been back long?”

“Only a few days, how’s Robbie?”

Cherry grimaced slightly, “Couldn’t see him last week, he had a cold, I’ll see him next week though.”

“I’ll go over to see him this week, Cherry, if you wish?”

The girl’s face lit up, “Oh, could you? Just to check he’s OK?”

The Head smiled, “I’ll arrange it this weekend,” she promised.

Cherry then had to join the group and stayed with Ruth Derwent for the rest of the session, helping out those of the inmates that needed an extra hand. By the end of the session everyone was well satisfied with a promising start.

Later in the week Miss Annersley was in her Study when there was a knock at the door; she looked up to see Miss Moore,

“Rosalind, come in my dear!” she smiled.

Miss Moore smiled, “You asked to see me, Miss Annersley?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “No formality, Rosalind,”

“You asked to see me, Hilda, then!” The Geography Head smiled.

“I did, look, sit down, I’ll get us both a drink, you are free this lesson, aren’t you?”

“I am,” Miss Moore confirmed, she sat herself at the small oval table in the head’s Study. A few minutes late Miss Annersley appeared with two drinks,

“Hope you like lemonade, Rosalind,” she said, “It’s starting to get a little warm to always have hot drinks.”

The two women sat sipping their drinks for a short time then,

“Rosalind, I understand that you were responsible for seeing that the nature park was started. May I ask, did you have any problems?”

Miss Moore looked puzzled, “No, no problems,” she replied. “I had a number of meetings with the ecologists and experts hired by Madge Russell, they were very enthusiastic. They will be over-seeing the park in general but appreciated that we wanted our bit done earlier so we could begin teaching. Has something gone wrong then?”

Miss Annersley walked back to her desk and retrieved some papers, “Some of these were awaiting me when I returned, and I’ve had another few during this week,” she passed them across.

Miss Moore flicked through the papers, they were obviously all written in the same hand, all somewhat threatening. Basically warning the School to leave Point Nepean to develop naturally. She shook her head, “Hilda, who are these people? Don’t they know that the only way we can ensure Point Nepean develops properly is by doing exactly as we have been. The site has got to be managed properly, and that sometimes means that we bring people in to prune and trim back some of the vegetation that would otherwise stifle all other growth. Do they want the park to consist solely of one or two species? Because that’s what would happen, the trees they are claiming shouldn’t be touched would smother all other life. We’d have a park consisting of just those trees and nothing else!”

“That appears to be their intention,” replied the Head, “I’ve spoken to the Ecologists and also with John Coates, these people seem to be a fringe environmental group, one that are solely concerned with opposing any of Australia’s native trees being cut down.”

“Well considering that they are writing on paper, I wonder if their ideas for trees have been thought through!”

At that moment there was a hurried knock on the door and Rosalie Dene looked in, “Sorry to disturb you, Hilda,” she said quickly, “But Peggy Burnett just called in, she and her Games class have just spotted some intruders!”

Just then Miss Annersley’s mobile phone rang, she reached in to answer it, it was John Coates,

“Hilda? You’d better get across to the site of the Nature Park, we have some uninvited guests!”

By the time the Head and Miss Moore reached the site of the nature park, there was quite a crowd. The bell for break had rung while Miss Annersley had been speaking to the head of Security, this was unfortunate because, as soon as the girls had realised that there was an incident, they immediately wanted to watch! Miss Annersley stalked through a gaggle of excited, screaming girls, all of whom fell silent as the Head passed. However, the crowds were such that most of the girls could not see her and therefore were unaware of her presence.

A movement by her side and Miss Annersley turned to see the Deputy Head,

“Can’t hear ourselves think, Hilda!”

Miss Annersley smiled, she bent her head close to Miss Wilson’s ear, “Have we a megaphone nearby, Nell? We’ll have to get rid of the girls before deciding on our next course of action!”

Miss Wilson frowned for a moment, then her face brightened, “Got an idea!” she said. She disappeared into the crowd and emerged at the front with Miss Burnett and Miss Neachell, on a signal from her they both placed their whistles in their mouth and blew!

The resulting noise was harsh and shrill enough for those closest to have to cover their ears, it certainly silenced the entire crowd of girls. They all suddenly became aware that the Deputy Head was facing them with a very annoyed look upon her face. She began speaking,

“Finally, I hope you realise that we have been attempting to get your attention for some time? Now, exactly why are any of you girls here? I appreciate that it is Break but this is most definitely out of bounds.”

There was a muttering from the centre of the crowd, “We wanted to see what was happening!”

Miss Wilson heard, “Really? Well you will be told about anything happening here when we deem fit. Now, I suggest that you return to the correct part of the grounds, because any of you still here in 30 seconds,” she looked at her watch, “will be spending the first part of their prep this evening taking a Chemistry test.”

There was silence as all the girls just stared at her, she looked at her watch again, “Twenty seconds.”

There was a sudden rush to vacate the area! In under fifteen seconds the only people left were the Head, Miss Moore, Miss Burnett, John Coates and a couple of his Security Staff.

Miss Annersley looked across at her partner, “Thank you Nell,” she smiled.

“No problem Hilda,” Miss Wilson grinned, “I’ll give you the test later!”

“Yes Nell, the day you pass A level English Literature!” Miss Annersley smiled and the rest of the Staff tried to stifle their grins. Miss Annersley turned to John Coates, “We have a problem, John?”

Coates nodded, somewhat grimly, he pointed towards the area set aside for the Nature Park, “Look up, in the trees,” he said softly.

The women all did so, then gasped. In perhaps five of the trees, about thirty feet up, sat people, clad in bright clothing and with equipment and sleeping bags around them, they appeared to have moved in to stay.

“We’ve got protestors in the trees,” John said, “They plan to stay there to prevent the trees being cut down!”

I'm also most curious about the ecoactivists and their targets (assuming these are genuine activists and not planted by nefarious corporate entities.) What trees big enough to camp in are scheduled for the chop, and why? The problem Aussie species I'd recognize would be things like Eucalyptus and Melaleuca, but that's because they're invasive in US ecosystems, not necessarily an indicator of their behavior at home. *admits being so weak in Australian botany I don't even know what biome is involved* (otherwise I'd have applied for a job. Sorry to disappoint you all - but Hilda and Nell will not be the pantomime cow! Ruth and Kathie will be far more subtle than that! Laughing

“Were we planning on cutting the trees down?” It was Miss Wilson who voiced the question.

Miss Moore replied, “Some of them,” she admitted, she pointed to two of the trees over to the right, “those two definitely, the ones covered in mistletoe.”

“Oh that’s a pity,” Peggy Burnett put in, “We might need mistletoe come Christmas!”

“Well mistletoe is a parasitic plant,” Nell Wilson replied, “it’s probably killing off the trees anyway, they don’t look too healthy. And exactly why do you feel that we’ll need mistletoe Peggy Burnett? Is there something you’re not telling us?”

The others all laughed as Peggy flushed somewhat and searched around for a way to refute the teasing.

“Enough, everyone,” The Head’s quiet voice calmed everyone, “Rosalind, are they the only two trees that are scheduled for felling?”

Miss Moore shook her head, “No, the idea is that a fairly large swathe of them will be cut down,” she pointed out an area, “to make room for a number of smaller shrubs and plants to be planted in their stead. It will also allow enough space and light for some species that are termed critically endangered. One, called the Charming Spider Orchid, is at the top of the list of endangered flora.”

“What about the trees that are going to be cut down?” Miss Wilson asked, serious once more.

“Well they are also native to Australia - called the River red gum tree - a type of eucalyptus, I’d understand their concerns if we were planning to cut down the entire forest, but from what the Ecologists told me, it’s only 15% of the total within the School Nature Park area.”

“Perhaps they have misunderstood the plans,” Miss Annersley put in softly.

“Well we can discuss it with them,” John Coates put in, “This appears to be their spokesman,” He pointed to where two of his security guards were escorting a man across to see them. There appeared to be acrimony between him and the guards as he was being frogmarched over with his arms twisted up behind him.”

“John…” The Head needed to say no more, John Coates signalled to his men to release the man. On being released the man shook himself slightly before continuing to walk toward the group. He looked at them for a few seconds before speaking,

“OK who do I talk to then?”

With one accord the others all turned to the Head, Miss Annersley nodded, “I am Hilda Annersley, Headmistress of this establishment, Mr…?”

“Name’s Kev, love, no last name. So Hilda, I expect you’re wondering what we’re doing camping out in your trees?”

“It had crossed my mind.” Miss Annersley replied dryly.

Kev grinned, “Well we’re there to stop you cutting them down, that’s what.”

“I had already considered that, Kev,” the Head responded. “May I ask why? From all I’ve been told, a number of the trees scheduled to be felled are diseased, and the space produced by cutting down the trees will be used for the encouragement of far more endangered species.”

“Maybe, but it’s much easier to get the public concerned about trees being knocked down, far more so than any little plants. With the publicity my group get from this, we’ll have enough money and kudos to take our place in the centre of the environmental debate. Your little park here will just be a stepping stone. And there’s nothing you can do to stop us. You might as well give in now!”

Miss Annersley turned slightly to meet the gaze of Miss Wilson, they both smiled, it was not a smile designed to give 'Kev' any confidence.

It was Miss Wilson who replied, “Am I to understand that you are trying to coerce us into doing something, Kev?” The Deputy Head’s voice was silky smooth.

Kev grinned, “Yeah, you could say that!” he replied, “We’ve already got in touch with the press, they’ll be here any minute now!”

John Coates stepped forward, he was obviously restraining his temper, “What do you want done with this one, Hilda? Want him thrown out?”

“Oh, I don’t think so, John,” Miss Annersley replied, “Allow him to rejoin his friends.”

“You sure, Hilda?” the Security officer looked puzzled.

Miss Annersley nodded and watched as Kev jauntily walked back to the Park. John Coates turned to the Head, “I’ll call the police, shall I?” he asked.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson exchanged glances, Miss Wilson replied, “What will the police do, John?”

John Coates shrugged, “They’ll bring in specialist negotiators,” he said, “trained to talk them down, it’ll take a while but they’re normally successful.”

“And all the time it takes, they will be generating publicity for their cause?” This from Miss Moore, “We’ll be doing exactly what they want!”

“They’ll be generating publicity for their cause anyway,” John explained, “They may be environmentalists, but I’ll bet they have mobile phones with them, probably also got laptops with satellite hook-up, they’ll be contacting the media and their friends, telling them all about what’s going on here.”

“Hmmm, in that case, let us not perform as directed, John,” Miss Annersley spoke softly, “For now, there is to be no police presence. Instead please ensure that your Security people make this area secure, I want no more breaches.”

John stiffened slightly, “Of course, my people will make sure that no media people can get in for a story and that no one else can get in to join them.”

“Very good, John,” Miss Annersley said, and her eyes took on a steel grey hardness, “Also ensure that those who are already in, cannot leave. I don’t want any of them to miss the consequences of their actions.”

John Coates looked a little puzzled but nodded and walked away, speaking to the rest of his men via radio. Miss Wilson waited until he had moved a fair distance away before speaking,

“We are going to do something, Hilda?” The question was almost perfunctory, as though the Deputy Head already knew the answer.

Miss Annersley smiled, “Why Nell, I believe that we are!” she replied, she glanced around at her colleagues before continuing, “And it is probably as well that we have given John something to do, because I’m sure that he would not approve. Let’s go back to my Study, we have some criminal activity to plan!”

Back in the Head’s Study the mistresses made themselves comfortable; the bell for lessons had long gone and all the girls were in class, the exceptions to that being those who should have been taught by the mistresses in the Study. Miss Moore quickly disappeared to find the Prefects, luckily they were all scheduled for a lesson on English Literature with the Head and were therefore free. She asked them to cover the classes, she also found Miss Derwent, Miss Trent and Mrs Bulfin in the Staff Room with a free period, and invited them along to the meeting.

After first ensuring that the three other mistresses were fully appraised as to the situation, the group settled down to discussing everything.

“The thing is, Hilda,” Peggy began, “they’re right. This will generate a lot of publicity, none of it good for the School, and the longer it goes on, the worse it will seem. The fact that we are in the right will not matter in the slightest. There are some elements of the media that will just ignore that part for the greater ‘human interest’ story.”

Cathy Bulfin nodded, “I’ve known of it happen in Australia before,” she said, “We’re the same as anywhere else with a Free Press, there are always some that will take advantage of it.”

“The main problem seems to be the fact that they can communicate with the outside world,” this from Rachel Trent, “If it weren’t for that, we could contain the problem.”

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson exchanged glances, the Head smiled, “Thank you everyone, I think that is all for now. I’ll let you know more when we’ve had a chance to debate further.” She nodded to everyone and, somewhat puzzled, everyone else filed out.

Miss Wilson looked across at her friend, “Hilda, are you thinking the same that I’m thinking?”

Miss Annersley smiled, “Well that depends, Nell, I was thinking about someone that we met during our skiing trip in July.”

“Funny that, I was thinking about something very similar!”

“Problem is, that won’t solve the mobile phone detail, will it?”

Miss Wilson frowned, ”No, but one thing about mobile phones, Hilda, for them to work, they need cover from a network.”

“You mean…?”

“I mean, you’ve always said our Prefects have criminal tendencies,” Miss Wilson smiled.

Miss Annersley returned the smile, she pressed the intercom, “Rosalie, would you please ask Alison Martin, Louise Chad and Carol Leigh to come to my Study? Thank you.”

There was a short pause while Miss Dene located the Senior Prefects, during which the two friends discussed different options. Then, once the Prefects had arrived at the Head’s Study, the two Heads spent some time updating the three girls. When they had finished all three looked angry.

“We can’t let them do this, Miss Annersley,” this from Alison, “They’re using us to further their own agenda, and it will reflect badly on the School.”

“And on the two of you.” Carol put in, no less indignant.

“What did you want us to do?” Louise asked softly.

The Head smiled, “We think that, if we can stop them communicating with the outside world, and in particular with the media, that they might lose interest in continuing. We believe we have a way of stopping computer access but use of mobile phones is rather more difficult.”

“We did wonder about somehow disrupting the nearest mobile phone masts,” Miss Wilson continued, “as a temporary measure. It would work, but it could mean that whoever did it would risk prosecution. On reflection we didn’t feel it was fair to ask that of you,” she grinned at the three who all returned the grin quickly.

“How can we help to prevent them using mobile phones then?” Alison asked the question.

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at each other and smiled, they then turned to the three girls and their faces took on a far more serious aspect, “We wondered if,“ Miss Annersley said, “perhaps, you would like to consider running away from school?”

The next few days saw the problem with the protestors in the trees escalate. Although the Security force kept all media off of the School grounds, they were unable to stop the rush of information via the Internet and mobile phones. The newspapers and local television crews were full of the story about how a large, English owned conglomerate was trying to demolish native Australian trees. They failed to report on the reason for the felling of the trees, and also didn’t mention that the Park was going to be used to teach school girls about conservation and the environment. Instead concentrating solely on the misinformation being fed to them by the protestors. By the weekend the Real Chalet School was virtually under siege, with a large number of photographers and newsmen camped outside the grounds. Indeed the security staff were kept busy continually retrieving wandering media people who had ‘just happened’ to get lost.

John Coates had given up trying to persuade the Head to call in the Police, instead he concentrated on ensuring that the protestors were kept in the trees and that no one either joined them or left. He was surprised by a request from Miss Wilson, especially as she didn’t give any explanation, but complied nonetheless.

On the Monday morning, after a weekend where the majority of the Staff and pupils had remained on site, rather than brave the increasingly hostile crowd outside, the protestor, Kev, demanded to speak to the Head.

Walking over to the site, Miss Annersley was accompanied by Miss Wilson, both of them looked grim faced. They reached the stand of trees, around it were a number of security guards, they had a small caravan nearby for amenities and were keeping a 24 hour watch on the protestors. In the trees the two friends could see that a number of rope bridges had been swung between the branches, to allow the protestors to move from one to another. They had also set up platforms on which sleeping bags could be laid. They even had set areas for cooking and waste disposal.

As they appeared the leader of the protestors swung himself down to meet them. Two of the security men walked him over to stand in front of the Head.

Kev smiled, “Get rid of these two, Hilda, then we can talk,” he said quickly.

Miss Annersley nodded to the guards who moved back, “You wanted to speak to me?” she asked.

“I did,” Kev pointed to the trees, “We’ve made quite an impact, don’t you think?”

“Nothing that we cannot handle!” Miss Wilson said brusquely.

Kev laughed, “That’s not how I see it,” he said, “We’re on every news channel, in all the local papers. You closing the site to the media has just made it easier, they can’t wait to interview us on-line, or speak to us on the mobiles. We’ve even had a few more protestors join us - your private police force couldn’t stop them!”

“Granted, the publicity has been…” Miss Annersley paused, “damaging, but it will die down. I see no reason to accede to your demands.”

Kev shook his head, “Hilda, Hilda, you are forcing me to take this a step further.”

“What do you mean?” Miss Wilson asked quickly.

Kev grinned, “Some of my people are prepared to start a very public hunger strike,” he said, “We will broadcast to the waiting media every day, how your refusal to meet our demands will lead to the starvation of some of us! And don’t try and get us down, ‘cos that will be shown on the Net too, show you in an even worse light!”

Personally, I'd let them starve....

I remember the tree platform lark. We had that too- bang on the bottom of a playing field. School just let them alone. However, when Swampy and Co were (finally) evicted and the chopping started, all hell let loose when they crossed the boundary between school land and the land that had been 'given' for the bypass.

Pseudo environmentalists are basically fake environmentalists. People who are more interested in protesting and causing trouble than actually protecting the environment. (Witness what Kev's actually doing.)

For those requesting far more posts - including this posting that brings the word count to over 9000 words - in five days I think that's pretty good.

There was silence for a short time, broken by the sound of Miss Annersley’s mobile ringing. She retrieved it from a pocket and placed it to her ear. After a short time she smiled and switched it off.

“I’m afraid, Kev,” she began, “that your fun here with us is at an end.”

The young man looked across at her, puzzled, “What do you mean, Hilda?”

“I mean, that I am no longer prepared to be lenient with you.” The Head’s eyes had lost their blue tinge as she glared across at the man. “For your information, that call I received, it was from a Mr Gene Duchek. He is an American, over here on business. He has helped us in the past and, when we explained the problem, was quite happy to do so again.”

“Help? Help you how?”

“He works for Microsoft, Kev,” Miss Annersley replied, “and he has just cut off your access to the Internet.”

Kev swallowed sharply, “That’s impossible, for someone to do that they’d need to be an expert and have the entire resources of Microsoft behind him!”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes,” she said simply.

The man backed away slightly, “Clever Hilda, but not clever enough!” he scrabbled in his pocket, “We still have these,” he pulled out a phone, “Can still contact the media with them.”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “No Kev, you don’t!” She signalled to the two security guards who stepped forwards and relieved the man of the phone. He turned to call to his friends still in the trees.

“Save your breath, Kev,” Miss Annersley advised softly, “They’ll not be able to help!”

“What are you talking about? We’ve got loads of phones, one of the others can call!”

“No, Kev,” Miss Annersley looked almost sympathetic, “Look!”

Kev followed her command and watched as three of the protestors quickly made their way down from the trees. At ground level they were stopped by the security staff who then waved them through. The two women and Kev watched as they walked over toward them. As they drew nearer it was possible to see it was three young women. One of them stopped in front of the Head.

“Miss Annersley, I’d like to report that three girls ran away from School, two days ago,”

“I see,” Miss Annersley’s face was impassive as she replied, “May I ask their identities?”

“Yes ma’am, it was the Head Girl, the Second Prefect and the Games Prefect!”

Miss Annersley shook her head sorrowfully, “My three Senior Prefects, I am disappointed girls!”

“Did you manage to do what was required?” This from Miss Wilson.

Alison grinned, “Seven mobiles, all in the bag Louise is carrying,” she said, “They don’t have any others.”

“So do you think we could come back to School now?” Carol said plaintively, “Only trying to sleep in a tree is just not my idea of a good time!”

Kev looked at the three in disbelief, “You’re not environmentalists? You said your families were totally opposed to this School!”

“We lied, Kev,” Louise replied, “Our family runs this School!”

The young man looked round, trying to find a way out of his predicament, “Very clever, Hilda, but we’re still in the trees, you can’t get us down. Even without access to the media we’ll continue the protest, eventually the media will get in contact.”

“No they will not, Kev, because all of your colleagues will, voluntarily, come down within the next day or two.”

“Never!”

“Oh I think they will,” Miss Annersley replied, “because effective immediately there will be no more supplies delivered to your people, no food, and more particularly, no water. The weather forecast for the next few days is warm, mid seventies, with an 80% humidity. It will not take long for your people to need water.”

9,000 words in five days? Yep, that's pretty good going, perhaps the problem is that you raised expectations so much by posting so much the first day - not that I'm complaining about that!

I won't nag for more just yet (such self restraint) but I am looking forward to more when you decide to resume posting, entirely at your own conveniece of course.

OK, so I love writing this, and I love the responses! Laughing But just occasionally I feel that the amount I've written isn't appreciated - especially as it's all I seem to have done this week! Still, bunny is back and biting hard now!

“You can’t do that! That’s inhumane treatment!” Kev was definitely worried now.

Miss Annersley smiled, “You used lies and misinformation to further your own ends, Kev, at the expense of this School and its Staff and pupils. I think you will find that we are prepared to do far more than that, to safeguard the School’s reputation.”

“And in any case, we are not saying that we will not provide these things,” Miss Wilson put in, “As soon as your people step down to the ground there will be all the food and drink they can consume.”

While she was speaking another figure had joined them, the deep tones of John Coates continued, “Of course, they will have to retract their accusations on camera first,” he said, John looked across at Hilda, “I assume you’ll not want them arrested, Hilda? In that case, we should have a record of them confirming that they no longer feel there is an environmental case to address. So that the media circus outside will leave us alone.”

“As you advise, John,” Miss Annersley confirmed quietly.

Kev looked from one to another of the people surrounding him, he saw no relief, he swallowed, “It’ll make us look stupid,” he said sullenly.

Miss Annersley shook her head slightly, “If you do, Kev, it is because of your own lack of judgement, not because of anything that we might do,” she said softly.

Kev looked across at her, a grudging respect on his face, “Gotta hand it to you, Hilda, never expected anything like this from you, you come across as too soft.”

At this Miss Wilson stepped forward, she held out a hand and, unthinking, Kev took it. As soon as she felt his hand in hers the Deputy Head acted, pulling him forward slightly and twisting his arm up behind his back. Kev was a young man in his early twenties, but somewhat thin and undersized, he was unprepared for the assault. Especially as Miss Wilson’s strength proved more than sufficient to hold him immobile.

“Now, Kev, I’ll let you in on a little secret,” Nell Wilson whispered into his ear, “in almost everything, Hilda Annersley is soft, but when it comes to defending the School and it’s pupils, she has an unbending steel interior. Now me, I’m not soft, and one thing that Hilda hasn’t mentioned has been bugging me since we first met.” She turned the man round to face the Head before continuing, “Her name is Miss Annersley, she never gave you permission to use her Christian name and, to my certain knowledge, never would. Understand?”

Kev said nothing to begin with, then a slight further twist to his arm produced a response, “Ow! Yes! Alright then, Miss Annersley!”

Miss Wilson released Kev, who stood there rubbing his arm furiously, “Damn it, you didn’t have to do that,” he said quickly, “This wasn’t what I expected.”

“Then your information was incorrect,” Miss Wilson said grimly.

Kev swallowed, “Yeah, right, I’ll get my people down then, Miss Annersley?”

The Head nodded gravely. Kev turned to the Deputy Head and nodded slightly before turning back toward the trees, he was flanked by two security guards. Miss Annersley looked across at her friend,

“Nell, it really didn’t bother me that much, you know!” she said mildly.

“It bothered me, Hilda,” Miss Wilson replied flatly, “It just showed his total lack of respect.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “I see, then it had nothing to do with the fact that you have been itching to attack him for the past few days?”

“Well I…”

“You enjoyed that, Nell!”

Miss Wilson grinned, closely followed by John Coates and the three girls, Miss Annersley looked round at all five, she sighed.

Thank you everyone! Very Happy

The end of the siege was almost an anti-climax, the other protestors, already shaken by the loss of their phones and Internet access, broke all records moving to the ground, once Kev had explained that they would no longer be given supplies. Each of them willingly made a brief statement in front of a web cam, stating that they had been given incorrect information, Kev himself detailed the actual use for the Nature Park.

Once all of this was posted to the Net the news men and photographers gradually dispersed. The firm responsible for the landscaping of the Nature Park moved in that day to fell the trees and begin preparing the soil ready for planting of some of the rarer species of Orchid. Some of the Sixth form, looking at Environmental changes in their Geography lesson, took part in the preparation.

That afternoon Miss Annersley took advantage of the now peaceful scenes, to keep her promise to Cherry Elliott and visit her son, Robbie. She returned with a sense of some disquiet. Discussing it later, once she and Miss Wilson had retired to their cottage that evening, she tried to put it into words.

“There was nothing wrong on the surface,” she said quietly, “the Blakes seem a very caring, loving family. Certainly young Robbie is being well-cared for and seems happy. He obviously misses his mother and the Blakes are careful to keep reassuring him that he will see her again soon.”

“So what was wrong?”

“I’m not sure,” Hilda hesitated, glancing over at her friend, “but, in some ways they seemed to disapprove of me!”

Nell Wilson laughed, she looked across at the woman seated opposite, “Hilda, much as I hate to say this, but how can they possibly disapprove of you. Your very appearance screams trustworthiness, you are the epitome of a responsible adult. Why should they disapprove of you?”

“I don’t know Nell, that’s why I found it…disturbing.” Hilda stopped as the telephone rang. Nell, who was closest answered it. A short conversation then she replaced the receiver, she turned to her friend,

“That was Daisy Venables, she’s on her way over here to see us. There’s some sort of medical emergency.”

I had this plan to stay off the board for the weekend to prove I wasn't addicted but I can't resist the pull of RCS and I know if I leave it for 2 days there will be so much to catch up on I won't do any work for a day. Which I suppose means that I do have CBB if not internet addiction.

I think it's because we love the rCS so ,uch that not even 9.000 words in a week can really satisfy us!! I'm sorry if I sounded unappreciative of the amount written, but the trouble with drabbles that are really good is that you have to wait for each part rather than sitting up and reading it in one session, which is what I want to do!!

ETA: I hated that jumped up squirt calling the Head by her Christian name too. Arrogant g** to think he could get away with it too.

The next 30 minutes or so were spent in near silence, Dr Venables had said no more to Nell, not wanting to elaborate until she could speak to the Heads face-to-face. It was with some relief that they heard a car draw up outside their cottage, Nell went to open the door as the tall doctor was still getting out of her car. She joined the pair in their sitting room and accepted the offer of a drink, sipping her tea she looked across at the two worried women.

“Understand that your problem with the environmentalists is at an end?” she asked quickly, “That’s good, because I have some rather worrying news.”

“What is it, Daisy?” Hilda spoke softly, as always, but her concern was apparent.

Daisy sighed, “Do you know who was admitted via Casualty this evening? Con Mackenzie.”

“Con? But what is she doing here? She and Jock live in Manly, Sidney.” Hilda sounded puzzled.

“She was staying with Madge Russell for a few days,” Daisy replied, “She’s been feeling unwell for some time, but this evening just couldn’t breath.”

“But what’s the matter with her?” Nell spoke sharply.

“She has pneumonia,” Daisy replied, “It’s a complication people can get when they’ve had influenza.”

“Con has ‘flu?” This from Hilda, "But it’s Spring, not the season for an influenza outbreak.”

“Not here, no,” Daisy agreed, “But it is in Britain, and she and the family were in the UK for the holidays.”

There was silence for a short time as both women digested this, “Daisy, more than one third of our pupils and three quarters of the Staff spent the holidays in the UK or Ireland, including ourselves.” Hilda said quickly.

Daisy nodded, “I know, that’s why, as soon as I realised the diagnosis I made preparations. This is the wrong season for an epidemic and the virus would likely die out soon anyway, but it can always survive and spread by using the air conditioning systems. The systems that have been in use in the hospital, the RCS Industries building in Melbourne and here at the School.” She placed her cup on the table and looked round at the two women. “It’s a nasty variant of the influenza virus and can make those that have it very ill. It’s likely that cases will start showing up here any day.”

Hilda and Nell looked at each other, Nell was first to speak, “Daisy, our only reference for an influenza epidemic is some sixty or more years out of date. Is it something that we should be concerned about?”

Hilda Annersley nodded, “I must admit, Daisy, I thought ‘flu was only a mild ailment nowadays, especially with the modern medication.”

Daisy sighed, “’Flu can still be dangerous,” she said softly, “To the very old or very young particularly, but also to anyone with an underlying complaint affecting their lungs or immune system. Even with antibiotics to fight off secondary bacterial infections it can still cause major problems. Con Mackenzie has asthma, normally it’s well controlled and she only developed it since entering the real world. But because of that she was more prone to respiratory complications. Any of your girls might also develop similar problems.”

*Pleads to Lesley - let Con be ok!!*

There was silence for a while as the two women digested this news, then the Head turned to her friend, “Nell, we have to prepare everyone. Would you please contact Rosalie and Ruth, we’ll need an emergency Staff meeting now, this cannot be left until tomorrow.”

Nell Wilson nodded, “To be held over at the School I suppose? There’s no other rooms large enough. I’ll say for, “she looked at her watch, “twenty minutes time, that’ll give anyone caught in the bath time to get ready!”

Hilda nodded, “Daisy, I assume you will want to speak to everyone?”

The doctor nodded, “Yes, I’ll especially need to speak to the Housemistresses and to your on-site nurse, you do have an on-site nurse?”

Both the other women smiled, “We do, although she only appeared this weekend,” Hilda replied, “She’s taken up residence in the small sick bay, it has a self contained flat attached to it.”

“I think, in all the fuss over the weekend, that her appearance hasn’t even registered,” Nell said quickly, “I know that none of the Staff can have guessed who it is, otherwise she’d have been mobbed by now!”

Daisy looked puzzled, “Didn’t anyone see her at meal times then? Or have you already got people in the sick bay?”

“She was out before breakfast,” Hilda explained, “She was going into Melbourne to purchase some supplies, apparently the agency staff we’ve had covering sick bay did not keep the correct supplies.”

“And she was going to Biddy’s for the evening, she should be back soon.. I’ll get Security to let us know as soon as she arrives. Have you alerted Madge and Joey?”

Daisy nodded, “Yes, had to let Madge know, she had brought Con in, she will be telling all her employees, I’ve also instigated the first stage of a possible quarantine at the hospital. We’re not admitting any elective cases at the moment.”

Hilda stood up, looking at her watch, “It’s just past nine thirty,” she said, “So the Staff Meeting can start at ten.” She looked across at Daisy, “I assume you have contacted Jock Mackenzie?”

Daisy nodded, “Yes, and he has spoken to the boys’ school, as it’s possible that they are infected too.”

“Good, in that case there is time for me to go across to the Middle Boarding House, Janetta will need to know about her mother.”

Oh blimey, hope you're not going to kill anyone off!

Please be assured Lesley, that the only reason I haven't changed my avatar is because I can't work out where I've got to without a point of reference, not because I do not appreciate your hard work! It is absolutely chucking it down here and more RCS provides an excellent reason for me not to have to walk to the laundry and do my washing.

Hope you're OK Kat! Kiss

It took only a very short time for everything to be organised, Miss Annersley had awoken Janetta and gently explained that her mother was in hospital, Janetta immediately wanted to go there and the Head told her to get dressed, Dr Venables would take her back when she went. She left Janetta in the capable hands of Gertrude Rider, one of the Middles’ Housemistresses and walked across to the Staff Room.

Quickly she explained to those gathered in the Staff Room about the possibility of a flu outbreak, those from the original chalet school seeming especially worried. Dr Venables hastened to reassure them,

“It’s not as bad as when we were in the fictional world,” she said quickly, “antibiotics will help the secondary infections and, if someone is at risk and reports their symptoms within 48 hours there is a treatment that might help.”

“What of those that are not in the ‘at risk’ group?” Miss Derwent asked the question for everyone.

“Mainly it’s a case of treating the symptoms, so bed, fluids, paracetemol or aspirin…”

“No aspirin if child is under sixteen!” It was a new voice, one that some vaguely recognised, everyone in the room turned to see a middle aged woman wearing a Nurse’s uniform stood in the doorway.

Dr Venables smiled, “No, Nancy,” she said, “I was just about to say that!”

The woman came into the room, grim-faced, “I wonder,” she said sceptically, “I don’t trust doctors, you know!” Her face suddenly split into a wide grin and she threw her arms around the doctor, “Daisy Venables! It’s been absolute years,” she cried, “how are you?”

Peggy Burnett suddenly grinned, “Nancy Chester, it is you, how wonderful to see you again!”

There were a few minutes of almost bedlam, those of the original school all crowding round to greet Nancy, another of those thought lost following the escape. The CBBers amongst the Staff were also excited, recognising the woman who had disappeared from the books almost without a trace.

After a short time, the Head rapped on the desk for silence and everyone subsided, “Ladies, further celebrations will have to wait, we have a potential crisis here.”

Daisy Venables smiled, “Sorry Aunt Hilda, well, as I was saying, for most people, if they get the normal symptoms, cold sensations but far more severe, including severe aches and pains, headache, cough and fever with shivering and sweating. They should take to their bed and treat the symptoms - and as Nancy said, no aspirin for those under sixteen. If you are really unlucky you might also have gastrointestinal problems.”

“That’s diarrhoea and vomiting, to those non-medical people among us!” Nancy Chester put in with a smile.

“What about vaccination, doctor?” the Earth Sciences Mistress spoke up, “Last I heard there was a world-wide shortage of it, and it’s unlikely that Australia would have a great deal, it’s the wrong season.”

Daisy nodded, “Quite correct, there is a small amount, but it’s earmarked for medical personnel and the ‘At Risk’. Everyone else will just have to manage.” She turned to the Nurse, “Nancy, how big is the San?”

“Six beds, nowhere near big enough, if this hits us hard. We’ll have to consider converting one or more of the boarding houses. Obviously the Staff and older girls will be able to look after themselves, but the younger girls will need careful nursing. Any of you with experience, I’ll need help.”

“Should we be considering sending girls home, Daisy?” Miss Wilson voiced a question that both she and the Head had pondered, “Fully one third of the girls are fairly local.”

The doctor shook her head, “No, we want to contain this, sending girls home, when they could be carrying the infection, will not make us popular with the Authorities!”

The talk went on for some time, with a number of suggestions and plans made, eventually, with the time close to midnight, Miss Annersley brought the meeting to a close. “I think that’s all for now, everyone. It will help no one if we allow ourselves to become over tired. I’ll see everyone back here at seven thirty, we will have 30 minutes before breakfast to discuss any further problems that you think of overnight.”

She and Miss Wilson waited while everyone filed out, Daisy Venables and Nancy Chester stood with them. Before the doctor left, taking the drowsing Janetta with her, she smiled at the others,

“We might be lucky, you may not get any problems.”

“Far better that we prepare for an emergency that doesn’t happen, than have one catch us unprepared.” Nell Wilson said succinctly.

Early the next morning saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson out running, they had decided, regardless of the problems, to continue their exercise regime, not least because they both found it so beneficial. During the run they discussed their plans for the early Staff meeting and the potential epidemic.

“You spoke to Daisy while I was on the phone to the Staff House, Hilda,” Miss Wilson began, “Did she give any indication on how long we’ll have to wait?”

“Well Con developed symptoms while still in the UK, so it’s likely that both Janetta and Evvy were exposed. They’ve been back at the School a week now, so any day really.”

“And they could have infected anyone, even before realising that they were ill.”

“Yes,” the Head said rather grimly, they had stopped at the top of the ridge to look down at the sea, she turned to her friend, “and they may not be the only ones that have brought the infection back. We could be in for a difficult time.”

In the Staff Boarding House Miss Derwent, the Senior Mistress, was attempting to placate her friend. “Calm down Ros, you don’t know that Geoff or Kelly have been infected.” She reached across to try and place an arm across her friend’s shoulders. Miss Moore, Geography Head, was too restless though, standing up and pacing across the floor of Ruth Derwent’s sitting room.

“Why haven’t they called then?” Rosalind Moore’s brown eyes were full of worry and she couldn’t seem to stand still. “Geoff’s mobile is switched off and the phone to Kelly’s room isn’t working!”

“Ros, Geoff’s phone is probably off because he’s asleep!” Ruth said, trying not to show her amusement at her friend’s disordered thinking, “You didn’t phone until after the Abbess finished the meeting last night, and that was nearly midnight, and he’s probably not up yet! The same goes for Kelly.”

Miss Moore stopped and looked across at Miss Derwent, “Do you think so?”

Ruth smiled and walked over to give her friend a hug, “I do, now, as soon as the meeting has finished I’ll ask Hilda if she’ll phone the hospital for an update on Kelly, they’ll tell her as she has parental rights. They’re both fine, I promise.”

Miss Moore smiled a little sheepishly, “Thanks Ruth, I’d appreciate that,” she looked round, “I’ll um go and get dressed then.”

“Do that, and maybe I can do the same, trying to deal with a crisis when still in my dressing gown just doesn’t work!”

The short meeting prior to breakfast was held in the Staff Room, a number of items were arranged, in particular looking at which Boarding Houses could most easily be used to nurse the ill. It was considered that some of the Middle Houses were best suited, and Nancy Chester said she would liase with Jennie Macleod and her Staff after breakfast. Also discussed were possible changes that might be needed to the curriculum, should the epidemic strike.

After the meeting, and before going across to the Dining Room for breakfast, Miss Annersley, after speaking to the Senior Mistress, telephoned the hospital and spoke to Dr Venables. She was able to report that Con Mackenzie was a shade brighter, but still requiring piped oxygen to breath. Janetta and the rest of her family were with her. She was also able to report that Kelly Stevens had been discharged, a week or so early, but, because of the possibility of an epidemic, it was considered prudent to move the girl away from an infection that could seriously affect her lungs.

Miss Annersley was able to discover that Kelly and her father, Lt Colonel Stevens, had left the hospital the previous evening and moved to a flat nearby. On finishing her conversation with the doctor, Miss Annersley relayed the information to Miss Derwent and the two walked across to the Dining Room. Once there the Head was immediately aware of Rosalind Moore’s worried expression, she smiled as she walked over to stand behind the Geography Mistress’s chair.

“I believe you might want this, Rosalind,” she said softly, handing over a small piece of paper, Miss Moore looked over at her chief with puzzled eyes.

“It’s the land line number for where Colonel Stevens and Kelly are staying,” Miss Annersley said softly, smiling slightly, “the move yesterday evening occurred so quickly that he was unable to get a message to you. So he left his details with the hospital for you. Apparently his mobile battery needs replacing, so he knew that you would be unable to contact him.”

Rosalind Moore smiled, “Thank you, Miss Annersley,” she said very properly, mindful that there were students nearby, “I appreciate that,”

“No problem, my dear,” the Head returned, “always a good idea if the Geography Head knows where she is going!”

After breakfast Miss Annersley rose to ask that the School remain seated for an announcement, in her soft tones she gently explained that the School was preparing for a large number of cases of influenza, and that they would be relying on the student to help. She then introduced Nancy Chester who proceeded to detail the type of symptoms that they might experience.

“We need to know as soon as you start having any of these symptoms, girls,” Nancy’s voice rang out authoritatively, “You’ll not help any of us if you try and hide the fact that you are ill, if anything it’ll hinder efforts. Now, those of you with any conditions affecting your lungs or heart, or who come into the ‘at risk‘ category. You will be having the vaccination, the rest of us, though, will have to brave the illness!”

Miss Wilson leant across to her partner, “I thought we didn’t have any vaccine?”

“Daisy told me one of her Staff, an Epidemiologist, was able to procure some, it’s being flown down here from Canada. Apparently they have a surplus.”

Was reading today, one reason for the vaccine shortage is that a drug company (in Liverpool) which was to supply 20% if UK and 50% of USA had their license taken away, literally the day before they were due to release the product, for not following Good Manufacturing Practice. This is a thrilling set of guidelines which governs how medicinal products must be manufactured (and varients cover all other manufacturing I believe).

Loved Nell's attack on Kev. And the way Hilda totally saw through it.

Worried about the potential flu crisis, but also worried that while we're worrying about this, Lesley will sneak something even more worrying in. As if we weren't worried enough. *rambling now*

Miss me? Laughing

The next day or so saw a frantic activity within the Real Chalet School. Lessons continued as normal, however the Staff were unable to disguise the preparations that were being made. In particular as a significant number of the girls and Staff were eligible for the influenza vaccination. As well as Nancy Chester, any other Staff with medical/nursing training had been co-opted into helping. Thus it was Miss Green, Earth Sciences Mistress, and a member of the Science Department, who was volunteered for a particular assignment…

In the Head’s Study, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson were sat listening while Miss Walker detailed her concerns.

“I know that a number of my students have had the vaccination,” she said, referring to her ‘Special Sixth’, but even so, I feel that continuing to have the ten coming in to the School while there is a danger of infection, is not a good idea. Quite apart from anything else, should they become ill they will be very badly affected at being away from home. Also, as they are currently day girls, their families will already have been exposed to the virus. So there’s no additional risk to sending them home.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes, I agree, Lulie, we will do them no favours exposing them further. Contact the coach company and arrange for them to be taken home. I’ll contact their parents and explain.”

“As we don’t know how long this is going to last,” Miss Wilson put in, “Might I suggest that they all be allowed to take one of the School laptops with them?”

Both the other women looked across at the Science Head, she smiled, “If you speak with Rachel Trent, I’m sure she can arrange for you to be able to rig up some sort of distance learning on the computer. While I know it won’t be suitable for all your students, some will be able to use the computer and will benefit.”

Lulie Walker nodded, smiling, “Even those that are unable to use the computer themselves can benefit - their families are all very keen to help. Thanks, both of you!” She nodded to both the Heads and left.

Miss Annersley spoke to Rosalie Dene, asking her to retrieve the contact details for the ‘Special Sixth.’ She and Miss Wilson then resumed their discussion about further preparations. They were suddenly interrupted by a quiet knock on the door.

Actually every flu epidemic is different, having had one doesn't confer immunity for another - that's why it's a different vaccine every year. Anyway, this next bit is me indulging myself again I'm afraid! Laughing

“Sorry to disturb you, Hilda,” it was Lesley Green, “I’m looking for…oh there you are Nell!” Lesley smiled at her Head of Department.

“Did you want to speak to Nell about work, Lesley?” Hilda asked.

“Not exactly, Hilda,” Lesley replied, “I wanted to ask if Nell had forgotten our appointment.”

“Appointment, Lesley? What appointment?” Only someone that knew Nell Wilson very well would have detected that Nell’s normal tones were rather forced. As Hilda Annersley fell into that category she suddenly viewed her friend with suspicion.

At the door Lesley grinned, “Now I know that you got my email, Nell,” she said, “I had an automatic reply back, the minute you read it.”

Miss Wilson said something uncomplimentary about modern technology under her breath.

The Head looked across at Lesley, her puzzlement showing on her face, the Earth Sciences mistress responded, “Nell’s been identified as one of those considered ‘At Risk’ and therefore needs a flu jab,”

“Nell’s at risk?” Miss Annersley sounded worried.

Nell grunted, “Because of my damaging my lungs back in August, Hilda,” she said impatiently, “It’s a load of nonsense though, I’m perfectly fine, I don’t need a jab!”

“Daisy Venables insisted that you should be protected, Nell,” Lesley said seriously, “She didn’t want even a chance that you’d contract pneumonia.”

Hilda looked over at Lesley, “Have you been helping out with the vaccinations then, Lesley?”

“Yes, my nursing qualifications are still current, and I can give flu vaccines in my sleep!”

“Oh that’s encouraging!” Miss Wilson said quickly.

Lesley smiled, “I promise, Nell, you’ll hardly feel it!"

Miss Wilson looked around but saw no escape, “Alright, I’ll be over to the sick bay within the hour,” she said reluctantly.

Lesley shook her head, “Nell, you said that to me yesterday. I’ve come prepared now!” She moved into the Study and the two Heads saw that she carried a small oxygen cylinder slung over one shoulder, and held a small cool bag. “I’ve got all the equipment here,” she continued. “I’ll do it now!” She looked over at the Head while saying this and Miss Annersley nodded assent. Lesley then retrieved some equipment and the vaccination from the box and prepared the jab.

Seeing no help, Miss Wilson reluctantly accepted the situation, as her Earth Sciences mistress turned toward her she pulled up her sleeve.

“Oh it’s not there, Nell,” Lesley said with a very serious expression on her face, “It needs to go in the other place!”

Nell turned bright red, “What!” she, only just, didn’t shout, “If you think I’m letting anyone…” Nell continued in this vein.

Taking advantage of her boss’s preoccupation, Lesley quickly injected the flu vaccine into Nell’s arm, “All done!” she said brightly.

Miss Wilson stopped in mid-flow, she looked at her arm, then at the other two women in the room, both Hilda and Lesley were biting their lips trying not to laugh. She took a deep breath.

“Lesley, I will remember this when it comes to your appraisal,” she promised darkly, she then grinned.

For those that are interested - yes I've used similar things to that as distraction - if you get someone really annoyed about something else they totally forget about the needle! Laughing
Little bit.

The Earth Sciences Mistress stayed with the two Heads for the next fifteen minutes, when certain that Nell Wilson was not going to collapse or experience a severe allergic reaction, she took her leave. Inside the Head’s Study there was silence for a time, then Miss Wilson looked across at her friend.

“I suppose you thought that was funny?”

Miss Annersley assumed an innocent expression, “No, not at all, Nell,” she said firmly, but her eyes were laughing.

The pair were interrupted by the telephone ringing, Miss Annersley answered it. Listening to one half of a conversation was extremely annoying, Miss Wilson was only able to discern that the person on the other end of the telephone was Daisy Venables, and that the subject was extremely serious. Unusually, the Head did not immediately switch the phone to speaker. When Miss Annersley finished speaking and replaced the receiver, it was noticeable that all levity in her face had disappeared. She turned to look directly at Miss Wilson.

“Nell,” she said gently, “that was Daisy, she was calling about Con.”

In the Intensive Therapy Unit of the Real Hospital there was only the one patient. Con Mackenzie had been admitted to ITU direct from Casualty some days previously. When Madge Russell had brought her into A and E it was with real concern about her friend. Con had arrived at the Russells’ house a day or two before, suffering from what she described as a heavy cold. It was immediately obvious to Madge that it was far more than that. The wife of a doctor for so many years, especially one who had specialised in lung problems, meant that, Madge recognised that Con had far more than a simple cold. Jem was not there - he had joined Jack in a trip to Manly, to stay with Jock, Joey had come over to stay with her sister and the three women intended to have a riotous few days of feasting and reminiscing.

Madge, and to a lesser extent Joey, had both recognised that Con was far more unwell than she thought. They had both tried to persuade her to go to the hospital earlier in the evening, without avail. It wasn’t until Con was almost comatose due to a combination of fatigue and oxygen deprivation that she finally agreed to go. Once in the hospital, the SHO had taken one look at her and placed a call for the Senior Anaesthetist and Consultant Physician specialising in respiratory problems. Con had been transferred to ITU and ventilated. After investigations the diagnosis of Influenza with severe bacterial double pneumonia was given. Her lungs were estimated as functioning at only 15% of the norm.

In the days since her admission, the medical team had battled to keep Con alive. Warned by Madge, Jock Mackenzie had arrived flanked by both Jack and Jem. He had remained by her side ever since. Both Jem Russell and Jack Maynard had been completely close-mouthed about Con’s chances, refusing to even speculate. For both Madge and Joey this actually caused them far more worry than any news. If their husbands thought her chance was so poor…

Janetta Mackenzie, though not yet fourteen, had proved a source of strength for her father. She was the only one that could persuade him to eat and sleep, drawing him away from Con’s bedside whenever he seemed to be faltering. Even when her older brothers, Peter and Patrick, joined them, having flown in from their School in Sydney, she would bully them into taking breaks.

Madge and Joey stayed with them, providing all the support they could, and liasing frequently with Dr Venables. They were both aware that Con Mackenzie was very ill, she was not responding to the antibiotics and her infection was getting worse. In the two days she had not improved, barely able to recognise people, due to the poor oxygen intake.

Matters came to a head on the third day, when her breathing suddenly deteriorated rapidly and she lost consciousness, left waiting in a small room nearby, the Mackenzie family huddled together. The Russells and Maynards waited with them. When Dr Venables appeared her face was very grave.

“Con is having an emergency CT scan,” she explained, “She has an extremely low oxygen level in her arteries, so low that it could well threaten her life.”

Jock looked across, a tall man, with dark red hair and blue eyes, his voice had also kept a slight Highland burr, “What could this mean, Doctor?” he asked.

Daisy paused for a moment, “She could be going into respiratory failure,” she said quietly, “Also known as acute respiratory distress syndrome. It’s a known complication of pneumonia. It could be fatal.”

No more today.

In the Head’s Study, Miss Annersley related the details to Miss Wilson, at the words Nell Wilson went pale, she stood up.

“Where are you going, Nell?” Miss Annersley’s voice was neutral.

Miss Wilson gestured sharply, “To the hospital of course!” she replied quickly, “You don’t think I could stay away, do you? Con’s my oldest friend.”

“No, Nell,” Miss Annersley’s voice was gentle but there was a ring of steel within it.

The Deputy Head turned from her aborted exit, “What do you mean, no?”

“You are not to go to the hospital, Nell.”

Miss Wilson swallowed slightly and stiffened across her shoulder blades, she shook her head, “Hilda, don’t do this, please don’t try to stop me.” Her voice was very low.

“You are not to go to the hospital, Nell,” the Head’s voice was implacable, she stood up and walked over to stand opposite her friend, she placed a hand on Nell Wilson’s shoulder, feeling the tension within. “Daisy Venables will not allow you into the hospital, Nell,” she continued, “the risk of infection is too great.”

“I’ve just had the flu vaccine…” Nell began.

“But it’s a bacterial infection that’s causing the pneumonia, Nell,” Miss Annersley replied, “and Daisy will not allow you access, the risk is too great. Now you know that Con herself would say that you shouldn't expose yourself to danger. Jock and the children would not want you to risk yourself.”

There was silence for some time, Miss Wilson bent her head slightly, thinking, then Miss Annersley felt the tension in her friend’s shoulders relax. Nell Wilson looked at her friend,

“I must do something, Hilda.” she said simply, “What can I do?”

Miss Annersley smiled slightly, “We can pray, Nell,” she replied just as simply, “I’m sure that will help.”

A moments silence, then Miss Wilson returned the smile with a slight one of her own, “Of course,” she said.

The two women knelt there in the middle of the Study, to send their prayers and requests to their God…

Gaaah. I was feeling really smug cause I hadn't caught up with RCS in days and I figured Lesley would have resolved the cliff by the time I read the latest post.

Lesley Ann Green. You are not to let anything happen to Con.

Poor poor Nell. I feel so sorry for her. Is it in Alt Romance where some comment is made about the friendship between Nell and Con? I thought of that when I read about Nell trying to get to the hospital.
Glad Hilda stopped her though. Couldn't bear it if Nell was the one dying.

Thanks Lesley.

In the ITU at the Real Hospital Con Mackenzie was laid in a hospital bed surrounded by machinery, the ventilator was continuing to inflate her lungs, pumping oxygen rich air into them. However the arterial line continued to show a slow but steady reduction in the blood oxygen level. Before their eyes Con was slowly suffocating.

Jock and the children were sat, in silence, around the bed. Jock sat holding Con’s hand, while on the other side of the bed Janetta sat between her two brothers, Peter and Patrick were each wearing identical expressions of shock, while, at the same time, though not yet eighteen years old attempting to give Janetta support. An arm from each of them draped across her shoulders. At the moment there was only the one specialist nurse there, she was kept busy checking her patient and the equipment. Her clipped expression and lack of her normal ready smile, showed that she too was very concerned about her patient.

Outside the ITU, seated in a waiting area, trying to sip cups of hospital coffee, the Russells and Maynards also waited. Jem and Jack had, finally, told Madge and Joey about their concerns. Their opinions had simply confirmed the two women’s worst fears. All four were now hoping and praying that modern medicine could save their friend. Seated where they were, the four were able to see when the Consultant Physician returned from viewing the latest CT scan results. Previously he had always stopped to speak with Jem and Jack, recognising they had some knowledge of his speciality, however on this occasion he swept past, accompanied by his Senior Registrar and the Consultant Anaesthesiologist. The door to the ITU was left slightly ajar in their wake and they could all hear as first one then a number of the machines started to bleep a warning.

Inside the ITU, the Mackenzies were startled to suddenly find themselves being pushed out of the way, at the same time a number of the machine alarms began sounding. Jock tried to rejoin his wife and was pushed back by one of the nurses, a number had suddenly appeared. “Stay here, Mr Mackenzie,” the nurse ordered, “We must help your wife!” The family stood and watched, helpless, as the group of medical personnel surrounded Con, disconnecting machines, and turning her onto her side.

One of the doctors was handed some equipment in a sterile package, as she tore open the package, one of the nurses used a swab to clean an area on Con’s ribs, about four or five inches below her armpit, almost as soon as he had done that the doctor, the Senior Registrar, opened the last part of the package to revel a sharp pointed and narrow steel-tipped tube, she felt along Con’s ribs and then plunged the tube into Con’s chest. Withdrawing the steel needle from the centre of the tube, the medical personnel were immediately rewarded with a large hissing sound, as air rapidly escaped from the tubing. A quick stitch to hold the tube in place, while the tubing was connected to a bottle.

As the family watched, the medical personnel did exactly the same on the other side. Only when the two procedures were complete did someone notice that the Mackenzie family had witnessed to entire operation. Jock Mackenzie looked as though he was in shock, he stared over at the Consultant, his eyes angry,

What have you done to my wife?” he said quickly, “What have you done to Con?”

Dr Long, recognising how distraught his patient’s husband was, simply smiled, he placed an arm around the man’s shoulders and guided him back to Con’s side. “Look at your wife,” he said gently.

Jock looked, he had learnt to read some of the machines in his time spent with her, Con’s heart beat was stable, the blood oxygen saturation was much improved. He looked Con’s face, her lips had lost their blue tinge and her cheeks were faintly pink. He turned to the Consultant, “How?” he asked simply.

“Your wife’s lungs were both collapsing,” Dr Long replied, “It was impossible to tell, due to the pneumonia, but the CT scan picked it up. The symptoms are very similar to respiratory failure. However, insertion of a chest drain will allow the lungs to inflate.” He smiled and nodded as Jock suddenly had hope in his eyes, “Yes, Mr Mackenzie,” he said quickly, “I believe we can save her now.”
