Eventually Jo turned around. Taking Jacks hand in her own she sat down on the sofa next to him. "Is it the chair? You must know that a thing like that won't deter me from marrying you now I realise that you are the big thing that has been missing in my life. I don't care how long you'll be in it, even if its always. So we won't be able to climb mountains any more, there are plenty of things we can do, and we'll do them side by side." A faint smile touched Jacks lips. Jo was behaving exactly as he knew she would, a brave honest girl who took what life threw at her and returned it with interest. Knowing he had to be honest with her he plucked up the courage to begin. At least what he had to say would go no further, it wasn't the kind of thing discussed in polite society.
"There is one thing we won't be able to do and I'm afraid its a terribly important part of married life. We won't be able to have a family together. My injuries you know." Bright red Jack stopped. Considering he was a doctor he was terribly shy about these things. " I mean I can still you know... or do you know... well umm ....... but my insides were terribly damaged and so .... we can't." He drew to an embarrasing halt. Jo's head was turned away and her shoulders were quivering. "Don't cry Jo please. I know we can't be together but we can be friends, hopefully close friends. You'll find someone else one day and I'll be uncle Jack and I'll never reproach you.
"You goop" Jo raised her eyes to Jacks. The only tears were tears of laughter. "I don't care about a family as long as I have you. Don't you think there are enough Maynard, Bettany, Russel offspring thanks to our brothers and sisters without more being added. And if we should one day decide we want a child of our own there are other ways. So many orphans will be left at the end of this war, we could foster or adopt. Meanwhile we can just take pleasure in being together, the two of us. So when shall we tie the knot?"
Jack stared at Jo unable to believe he was lucky enough to be able to spend the rest of his life with the woman he knew was his soulmate. How many men got that. He pulled her onto his lap in the chair and nothing more was heard from the room until the gong rang for tea.

Through the car mirror Jem glanced at Joey who was sitting quite composedly in the back. He could see a smile on her face and wondered what she was thinking about on this last journey as Miss Josephine Mary Bettany. Knowing Jo it was anything but what you would expect!
Jo was actually contemplating the events of the last two weeks. Since she had become engaged to Jack a year previously she had continued to teach at the school and Jack had adapted to life with an amputated leg. He had been living at the staff quarters of the san as it would have been highly improper for the two to have been sharing a house. Things had been pottering along quietly, Jo regularly visited the san and had made good friends with several patients. In particular she had become very fond of a girl her own age, Anne. Anne was sadly dieing and was aware of the fact. She carried on bravely and Jo thought that in many ways it was a relief to her friend as her husband had died just over a year ago in the war. Since they had met Jo had taught her several handicrafts to keep her fingers busy and often brought little gifts made by her pupils in hobbies club, laying in bed all day could be very dull. Jo had great sympathy for Anne. Hadn't she been through a similar experience herself? But she was one of the few fortunate ones who had had a second chance.

The only problem for Jo was that Anne would be leaving Laurence, her 10 month old son, with no close relatives to care for him. She knew this was the reason Anne continued to hang on but the disease that was eating away at her bones could not be held back and very little time was left.
Two weeks prior to Jo's current journey, Anne had asked to see her. The resulting conversation had left her flabbergasted. After the usual pleasantaries and a giggle over the middles latest Anne had launched into a subject dear to her heart.
"Jo, are you planning to be married soon or are you going to keep poor Jack hanging on for ever," she queired. Jo stared in amazement.
"Me, keep him hanging on! I said I'd be happy to wait while he got accustomed to his change, but I expected it would take a few months. I'd get married tomorrow if Jack wanted to." Truth be told Joey was beginning to worry that Jack was having second thoughts. Every time she tried to approach the subject he would put her off with reasons that made sense at the time but later on her own made Jo wonder.
Aware that Jo was unhappy with her situation Anne hurried onto the reason for her question. "I'm writing my will," she said abruptly. "It's only a matter of weeks now and I've been putting it off because it makes things so final. I was wanting to leave something special for you and Jack, a kind of wedding present really."
Jo was startled to say the least. "Theres no need you know. Its not about presents, its about people. I'd rather have you there than any present you could give." Being Jo she really meant it, material goods meant nothing to her.

*Being sent home from work now due to snow! Hurray, I don't need to stay for a boring govenrors meeting.*

#55:  Author: aliLocation: medway, kent PostPosted: Sun Feb 01, 2004 9:53 pm

O.k. heres the next bit, only a short one because i feel yucky and need to go to bed. I'm sure you all worked out that she was going to leave one of her legs to Jack so I think we'll head straight to surgery.

Only joking, that would be gross.

Anne gently touched Jo on the arm and looked pleadingly into her eyes. "Please don't make this any harder than it already is for me. I love Laurie so much and can't bear the thought that he won't even remember me. The best I can do for him is find him new parents who will love him like their own and will tell him all about his true parents when he is old enough to understand. I know you and Jack are the only people to consider. I see how much you care for each other, its there in everything you say and do. And the way you have befriended me, you didn't have to but you did even with all the friends and responsibilities you have , you made time for a sick girl you didn't know, that shows me you have enough love to spare for my boy. Say you'll do this, please, I need to know this so I can stop struggling." She ran out of breath and stopped, tears in her eyes. She was soon to be comforted.
"I'll need to talk to Jack, but I know he'll agree. You don't know this but we can't have children of our own. This is like a dream for me. I was quite prepared to be childless and didn't think I minded but as soon as I understood the gift you were making us I realised I had been fooling myself. I do want a family. Jack, Laurie and I will be that family, and he will know all about the amazing woman who changed my life." Overcome with emotion Jo turned to the door. "I going to arrange my wedding, it will be as soon as I can manage it, I want you to be a part of everything so don't go away." with one last smile Jo left Anne with her head spinning. She had thought her friendship with Jo had been a miraculous chance. Now she knew it was meant to be, they had given each other the one thing that the other needed. She knew she had made the right choice, and as soon as the wedding was over and Lauries new home was ready she would go.

Feeling much better thank-you. But don't be surprised if I dash off, the baby has it now and has been vomiting everywhere. Hubbys gone out to buy carpet cleaner.

Jo made her way hastily to Jacks room and pounded on the door. She knew he must be there because he was off duty and wasn't in the doctors relaxing room. Those were the only places he ever went as far as she knew. No answer, she turned the handle and pulled - nothing, he'd locked it. She knocked again and heard shuffling from inside.
"Jack, are you alright. Its me, I've got to talk to you immediately you're not going to believe the conversation I've just had." She could make out the sound of Jacks chair approaching the door and then the key turned in the lock. The door opened and Jacks tousled head appeared. "Were you asleep, I'm so sorry if I'd realised I'd have..... well actually I'd still have knocked, I'm so excited and we have plans we need to make straight away". She was so worked up that she bounded into the room and plonked herself down on the bed after straightening the sheets.
"Ummm, it was a busy night so I thought I'd catch up with a snooze before my next shift." Jack seemed distracted and Jo put it down to his rude awakening. "Well what's this big news you've got to share, it must be a matter of life or death for all this fuss!" Jacks attempt at humour was misplaced, Jo's face fell and she very quietly replied.
"It is, although not for us." She repeated the conversation she had had with Anne half an hour previously. "So you see, we must get married straight away, it's about time anyway but I didn't know how to bring it up with you." She looked expectantly at Jack who wheeled himself over to her and patted her on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry, that comment was very tactless, I can only say that I had no idea that Anne felt that way although she's right when she says it needs sorting out now. She does only have weeks left. But what are you doing hanging around here gossiping to me? Weddings don't plan themselves you know and I won't be much good. Off you go to see Madge and Robin, I'll just get on with my job and turn up at the right time!" Jo stood up much to Jacks relief and he surreptitously twitched the blanket of his bed down to hide the toe peeking out from underneath. A quick peck on the cheek was exchanged and Jo departed feeling as though nothing could happen to dampen her joy. Inside the room Jack heaved a sigh of relief, if Jo had been close enough she might have heard him muttering about that being a close thing and having to be more careful in future.

Theres no fooling some of you, is there!

Jo happily set about arranging her hasty wedding. Many of her friends would be unable to make it but that wasn't really the point of the wedding, was it! School friends were away for the holidays and her old friends were spread far and wide. A week soon passed, Madge, Robin, Marie and Anna industriously made dresses, food, flower arrangements and the like. Jo was busy arranging the ceremony, a short break for the honeymoom and of course somewhere to live when they returned. She had been fortunate to find a small gatehouse near the roundhouse for rent which would do to begin with. It meant a share in Madges help, Anna would be coming up for every afternoon to clean cook and mend although she meant to do most things herself, and more importantly a share in Jems transport and driver which would be invaluable to Jack. She also spent as much time as she could on the ward with little Laurie. She was already completely taken by him and was prepared to do anything asked of her for him.
Jack meanwhile had his own fish to fry. His little secret had been close to discovery when Jo had invaded his room without warning. Luckily had been tidying away after practice and Jo had been very preoccupied. On the eve of the wedding Jem visited Jack to make final arrangements. It was difficult for him, Jo wanted him to give her away as Dick was still in India and Jack wanted him to be best man. Jo had of course won that battle. "An example of married life!" as Jem had joked. Frank Peters who had become a good friend agreed to do the duty and all three of them were highly excited by Jacks surprise.
"You do know how lucky you are," Frank asked. "Those legs are prototypes, if the army hadn't been at the hospital and you hadn't been a doctor who could could explain your reactions properly you'd never have got one."
"I know it, I'm a very greatful guinea pig.I just can't wait to see Jo's face when I'm standing at the alter waiting for her. She'll probably swoon with shock.
Jem chortled, "I highly doubt that, if you don't know our Joey better than that by now you have no chance! Perhaps you'd better leg it now, if you'll pardon the pun!" The other two laughed loudly and they settled down with a glass of whisky to enjoy Jacks last night of freedom.

Thanks again, I know its all a bit nicey nicey but I can't do evil and I wanted something where the characters I've always loved stay the way I imagine them. Not that I don't enjoy their other personifications because I think they're fantastic and I'm really envious of those of you who can send characters in a totally dofferent direction whilst keeping them totally believable. Right back to the story.

Meanwhile at the round house, the girls, which was a large gathering of Joeys friends were having a jolly evening of do you remember. Those who fitted and had them were all dressed in old uniforms. Some of the staff from school had borrowed from the sixth form and had managed to get enough together for other friends such as Janie Lucy who refused to be left out. All in all they had planned a pretty rampageous evening for Jo, one she wasn't likely to forget. Many of the old games were to be played with a new twist. Photos had been dragged out, particularly those which showed Jo in an interesting situation,(there were many of these) and those which had an amusing story to be looked at over a delicious meal. The guests had already conceived a series of tableaux, all showing one of Jo's adventures and much hilarity was had as Jo tried to guess and retell the particular story for those not in the know. Veta had played herself in the kidnap rescue which Jo had got straight away. Grizel after much persuasion had also played herself in the tiernjoch rescue, Jo had retold it to show Grizel in the best light possible as she didn't want new staff to condemn their work mate. A few glasses of wine had relaxed everyone and those in the audience were giggling at the most recent scene which depicted Jo (played by Robin) washing another girls hair, the girl was obviously not enjoying the experience and had produced lots of practial joke stories. The makeshift curtain drew back to reveal Matey as Jo's character. She appeared to be stretching as high as she could whilst a group crowded below her handed who knows what up. Jo looked puzzled, she couldn't imagine what this one could be. Suddenly an eerie screeching noise reverberated around the room. In the corner by the window Frieda was pulling her fingers down the pain. Jo dissolved into laughter and spent the next five minutes discussing the ssm and its evil doings which included attaching snails to the first Matrons windows producing an awful noise which woke her up and scared her to death. The rest of the evening continued in the same way, until finally the guests departed and those staying at the round house disappeared to bed. Jo of course had the final word.
"What a jolly evening,I haven't thought about most of those things for years, although you made me seem like an absolute magnet for adventure. But just think, the best adventure of them all begins tomorrow. Night night, I'm off to get some beauty sleep. I don't want Jack rolling himself away in haste when a total gorgon appears to marry him in the morning." Chuckling she left the others to shake their heads and retire themselves.

Billie has returned, and what better day for a romantic wedding? (Billie certainly is not lime green with a gold lame tail, she is tangerine with spicy red highlights.)

The car door opened and Jem put out his arm for Jo to lean on. She was suprised that they were there already but more than ready to begin.
"Come along Joey," smiled Jem affectionately, "Time to off load you onto some other poor chap!"
"There is nothing poor about Jack. He is very lucky to have me and he knows it," Jo's reply was as good natured as Jems jest and both knew it.
"There's the Robin waiting for you, no doubt to straighten your skirts and check your hair." Robin was indeed waiting, a slender dimpling young lady who looked most elegant in the powder blue suit she had chosen for the occasion. Due to the current state of affairs in the country they had decided that Rob was to be the only bridesmaid, there were too many nieces and family friends so rather than leave anyone out they should all be spectators. It was to be a fairly small affair. Just close friends and family, the school was hard at work preparing an evening celebration for the couple instead of joining the main event although a few representitives from the staff were present. Jo stood before her in a simple cream silk dress, it had a narrow skirt that showed off her height and slender figure, and a fitted bodice with a scooped neckline. The only jewelry she wore were her pearls from Belsornia and a matching pair of earrings that had been an engagement gift from her sister.
"But Joey how lovely you look, like a real lady for once. I'm so glad you decided to have a proper dress instead of just a suit, it wouldn't be the same. Here is your bouquet, Madge prepared it this morning, Jasmines from the greenhouse to match the ones Anna embroidered around your hems." Robins excited state of mind belied her cool composed look and she was looking forward to being part of Jo's new family for a few years before she went off on her own to whatever her future held. Jo kissed her warmly on the cheek and lowered the old lace veil that Madge herself had worn to marry Jem. Jem took Jo's arm, Robin took her place behind them and they started the slow prosession into the church. Rather than the traditional wedding music Jo had asked Mr Denny if she could have one of his own compositions that she loved and brought back happy memories, he had been quite overwhelmed at the idea and insisted on playing himself. As they walked along the back of the church Jem whispered into Joeys ear,
"You're right, he is a lucky chap, and he does know it, I hope you will both have all the happiness I share with Madge. I'd wish you more but I don't think its possible." Then he straightened up and turned them into the aisle. Jo blinked back a tear that had appeared as the usually taciturn Jem shared his feelings. She knew her sister had a happy marriage despite the fact that they didn't show their feelings in front of others and the fact that Jem was so often away. If we can be as happy as them we will have a great future, we will probably have similar issues but I'll make sure that Jack always comes first and that we share our thoughts and feelings. We'll make time for each other whatever happens. She looked up eager for her first glimpse of her husband to be. She noticed many familiar faces and all were smiling at her, how priviliged she was to know so many good people. Then there he was, peering down the isle at her as he stood erect beside Frank. STOOD. Jo gave a small yelp and pulled free of Jem dashing heedlessly into Jacks arms and almost knocking him over in the process. She could hear chuckles and whispers from all directions and knew they were saying 'just like Joey' but the only voice she took heed of was Jacks.
"I love you, you look beautiful, are you ready?" Jo nodded speechlessly as she thought about the time and effort it must have taken for Jack to be standing there beside her. And how had he kept it a secret, she could usually ferret anything out of anyone but she'd had no idea. Knowing what she was thinking Jack murmured into her ear. "Sorry I've kept you hanging on for so long, I know you wanted to get married months ago, but I wanted to do this for us." With eyes only for each other they stepped forward and the simple service began.

#122:  Author: aliLocation: medway, kent PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 8:56 pm

To Joey the ceremony seemed to be over in moments, the register was signed and they were soon parading back down the aisle at a slow pace with joyful hearts. Outside the door the younger members of the clan, including Daisy who still had a childish mind, were waiting well armed with rice and petals to throw over the newly weds.(This resulted in much wriggling for the rest of the day from Jo as various strands made themselves known.) A doctor from the san was dispatched with the bouquet as soon as the photos were taken and was soon telling Anne the whole story as she lie in her bed, a satisfied expression on her face. The day Jo and Jack returned from their brief but satisfying honeymoon she knew she could leave without regrets and Laurence began his life with his new family.

And so the Maynard family lived in England with the usual ups and downs of any young family. When the school started up in Switzerland along with the san they decided Jem should be the one to go, Jo was quite satisfied with her writing and her family, Jack was delighted to be left in charge of the English branch and Laurie was just happy with life.

The End.
