Hilda Annersley

‘Hilda! Hilda…wake up darling, you were shouting again,’ said Nell shaking her friend awake.

‘ I see them so often in my dreams, every morning is the same, its like loosing them all over again,’ whispered Hilda before getting slowly out of bed and going to the window. It was still dark outside, the reluctant dawn not yet broken, the autumn sky still and quiet…peaceful…

Nell looked on sadly, not knowing the full story only knowing what Hilda told her during their night-time chats.

You're not thinking of leaving it there, are you, Marianne? That must win the prize for the earliest cliff in the drabbles.

Sleep? Oh I remember that. It's what I used to do before I found C&D Wink

Be nice Marianne. I'm terrified of heights, and cliffs aren't good for me. Anything more than a gradual slope, and I become a quivering wreck.

‘Hilda?’ began Nell tentatively, ‘why don’t you try to get some more sleep.’

‘I hate living like this Nell,’ said Hilda, not responding to Nell’s suggestion but turning round, tears rolling down her cheeks.’

‘I know,’ was all Nell could find to say.

‘Do you though? What kind of civilised world is this that children get taken away from their mothers just because the…establishment…doesn’t approve of the circumstances of their birth!’ shouted Hilda, obviously angry.

Another cliff. Marianne is doing this deliberately to torment us.

#18:  Author: MarianneLocation: Lancaster PostPosted: Fri Jul 16, 2004 9:13 pm

‘Come and sit by me Hilda,’ whispered Nell, surprisingly Hilda obeyed. ‘Tell me what happened…’ said Nell, not really sure what to expect but determined to keep Hilda talking in the hope that it would help her new friend.

‘It was ten years ago, I was a twenty-year-old degree student at Oxford and I met this professor, he didn’t teach me, he was a Historian, lecturing at Trinity. I was invited by a friend to a History society dinner and I ended up on a table with him…’

Ooooh Marianne!

Go on then... what happened next...??

#22:  Author: MarianneLocation: Lancaster PostPosted: Sun Jul 18, 2004 1:47 pm

*the stuff in brackets is flashback...*

You’re not a history student,’ commented Chris Fielding

‘No,’ replied Hilda shyly, ‘I am studying English; I want to teach,’

‘Oh, a fine profession,’ Chris replied genuinely, ‘Well I’m Chris Fielding, I’m a Historian as you might have gathered!’

‘We talked for ages, all through dinner, I don’t think I noticed who else was on the table; it was love at first sight, although I didn’t realise it then. I had tried to talk myself out of it. He was witty, charming, lovely…and worse…I couldn’t hate him afterwards because he was so genuinely kind and good.’

‘What happened next?’

‘We went our separate ways, he walked me back to St Hilda’s, which is quite away from trinity!’

‘A gentlemen then,’ commented Nell bitterly, she couldn’t think well of any man who made her friend feel so terrible.

‘Oh this is stupid!’ said Hilda suddenly, standing up, ‘we both need sleep,’

‘Not especially, it’s Saturday tomorrow, and neither of us are on duty. Go on. Did you see him again?’

‘Two days later, I bumped into him strolling over Magdalen Bridge and we decided to meet for coffee. We got on well you see, we shared a taste in literature, in politics…he took me seriously and he was so genuine, it was refreshing. I found myself waking up at night wondering if I’d met someone who was so lovely, I was in love, or maybe not, maybe it was an infatuation…’

‘Hilda Annersley! Hello!’ called Chris jovially.

‘Good morning, I’m off to a tut,’

‘Ah, me to, to do the tuting!’ he replied laughing, ‘Are you free this afternoon, like a coffee?’

‘I am, yes why not!’
‘My heart leaped, I dared not think anything of the meeting, it was enough that I was able to spend time with him,’

Excellent, there’s that little place near Christchurch Meadow,’

‘I know it, see you at fourish then?’ suggested Hilda tentatively.

‘Oh good stuff, afternoon tea, my favourite meal!’

‘Oh yes, mine too!’ agreed Hilda, her heart singing.

‘So you met him?’

‘Yes, I could hardly concentrate through the tutorial…he soon became my Oxford.’

#24:  Author: MarianneLocation: Lancaster PostPosted: Sun Jul 18, 2004 6:21 pm

I'll do my best!

Just thought i'd better add a disclaimer since there are a few Oxford bods and i gave the address to an oxford friend earlier! none of the characters are meant to represent anyone in real life or anything!

Laughing

I'll post some more later this evening!

‘What happened next?’ probed Nell, desperate to get to the route of her friends troubles.

Hilda looked Nell in the eye, ‘Love, friendship…we spent more and more time together and he fell in love with me, I’d never felt so loved, so safe, so needed before and it was wonderful. I was a good girl, my three brothers saw to that! I’d never drunk alcohol before, at twenty I was very innocent, he knew that…I think. Nell, I sinned, I did wrong I grant you but nobody deserves what happened to me!’

‘Hilda; lets spend the day together, I’ll get a bottle of Champagne and we’ll go punting, we’ll have lunch and dinner in the evening. What do you think?’

‘That sounds lovely Chris, tomorrow?’

‘Today?’

‘Alright,’ agreed Hilda and the couple set off, hand in hand
.

‘It was nice Nell, the Champagne was lovely but I was too stupid to know that I was tipsy, too young, too in experienced.’

Nell could guess where the story was going, ‘and one thing led to another?’

‘Something like that,’

Don’t leave me Chris,’ Hilda said after the evening had ended.

Chris laughed, ‘You’ll have to invite me to spend the night then!’

‘Yes do!’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Yes yes, come in and have a coffee!’

‘I shouldn’t, I’m a Professor!’

‘Not mine though, come on darling!’ Hilda had pressed.

‘Ok…ooooo sorry English student! I will, yes!’

‘Excellent, come along, lets not stand outside arguing!’

‘So he went to your room?’

‘Yes…we slept together,’ whispered Hilda, hardly admitting it to herself.

‘Oh,’

‘Do you hate me?’ worried Hilda.

‘No, of course not…’

‘You do!’

‘NO! I just thought…’

‘What? That I was better, that I had more morals?’ questioned Hilda scathingly. ‘Is it wrong for two people who love each other to show that love in a perfectly natural way? Really?’

‘Maybe not…just…the church…go on, what happened,’

‘we saw each other regularly…but…a month or so later, I realised, I was having his child,’

‘Chris, I have to talk to you today,’

‘You look worried Hilda,’

‘I am, look sit over here,’ Hilda suggested, indicating a bench.

‘What?’

‘I’m pregnant,’

Oh...’

‘Say something, what should I do’

‘I ought to propose I guess…I like you a lot, no, love you, but I can’t marry you,’ said Chris desperately.

‘I see, why?’

‘I, gosh, I should have told you weeks ago, I’m dying…’

‘What? How? I don’t understand!’

‘Cancer, they’ve given me a few months…bye bye Hilda Annersley,’

‘And that was it, never saw him again,’ confirmed Hilda, a fresh torrent pouring down her cheeks.

Nell was speechless, never had she guessed that her friend, whom she’d known for a year had such trauma in her past, ‘Oh Hilda, I’m so sorry…’

‘You know I’ll never love anyone again, ever,’

‘What happened to the baby?’

‘Babies – it was twins, a boy and a girl, a ready made family. I called the boy Chris and the girl Anna but I don’t know what they are called now, or even where they are. I told my parents, it didn’t go well…’

‘Mother, Father, I need to talk to you,’ began Hilda what she visited for Sunday Lunch.

‘Of course dear is anything the matter?’ replied her Father concerned, ‘Do you need to talk to John and Peter?’

‘Yes, I suppose so…’

‘I didn’t deal with it very well, I just always expected things to work, ever the optimist, so I picked one of those rare things, a family gathering to break the news.’

‘JOHN! PETE! Hilda is here! Come on, I want us to chat!’ shouted her into the garden to his sons.

‘Coming!’ came Johns call.

‘My brothers were both older, John was 25 at the time and Peter was 23 both had successful careers, I loved them both but they reacted the same way as Father…’

‘Right…Father, John, Peter…I’m pregnant,’

‘WHAT? You’re not married, you can’t be pregnant,’ shouted John.

‘Yes dear, of course I can, it may not be desirable but it’s altogether possible,’ replied Hilda.

‘Get out of my house Hilda; you are no daughter of mine,’

‘Said father, and that was it, I left. I exchanged a few letters with Peter but it soon fizzled out, I guess he was persuaded of my evilness by John and Father. I didn’t have any money to put myself through university, what I did next I’ll never forgive myself for…’

‘What?’

‘I sold them…I sold my babies, In a terrible, ruthless way…There was an orphanage near where I lived so I introduced myself to the…women….in charged,’

Hilda went up to the heavy brown door and rang, hands shaking, guilt already gripping her soul, ‘Hello there, how can I help?’ questioned a young girl who opened the door.

‘I would like to speak to someone in charge,’ requested Hilda.

‘oh, Yvonne Green, come in, I’ll show you her office,’

‘And I went in, I went into her office, it was small, cramped and noisy. She was sitting in a mismatching blouse and skirt, she was obviously poor and flustered, it didn’t feel good but you must understand, I was desperate,’ finished Hilda, turning to Nell, searching her face, expecting rejection but hoping against hope that Nell would make it all right.

Hello, my name is Hilda Annersley,’

‘Hi, Yvonne Green, what can I do for you?’ asked Yvonne not looking up.

‘I’m in a bit of a dilemma,’

‘Everyone is who walks through those doors…’ laughed Yvonne, soon looking up, ‘Childless couple? No, no husband, you want to arrange a place for you baby…’ guessed Yvonne, almost disgusted.

‘I want my child to be adopted and I want money so that I can finish my degree,’ explained Hilda simply.

‘I see, I have a couple, willing to pay £5000 for a new-born, will that do?

‘Yes,’

‘Excellent, I don’t deal with that kind of thing, it takes it out of my hands, I prefer looking after real orphans. Here is their address…’

‘I went to see them, I was to go away and come back a few weeks before I was due and I could stay with them. They gave me money and I went back to Oxford.’

‘Did you? Did you go back?’

‘Yes, I managed to hide it, I think people wondered what was going on but since I’d spent so much time with Chris I hadn’t made close friends, besides, no one would guess the real problem. They all gave me sympathy when they heard of his death…gave ME sympathy. I didn’t deserve it, it made me feel dirty…I worked hard, very hard, while I was busy the guilt hurt less. I went to their house, gave birth…to twins…they accepted both with open arms. They were good people, desperate but so was I, I left, they gave me more money, enough to see me through and I left…’

Echoing Jennie, but also feeling the same about Hilda's father and brothers.

Please may we have some more. I'd really like to see how this develops.

Sort of soon-ish would be nifty Smile

Echoing Jennie & Frances - I do hope that Bill is supportive, Hilda seems to have some doubts, although I think I would be pretty shocked if someone told me they had sold their babies.

#36:  Author: MarianneLocation: Lancaster PostPosted: Wed Jul 21, 2004 11:27 am

*ok, last bit, thought i'd leave the future open!*

Nell stood up; not daring herself to look at Hilda, she was shocked. Nell wandered over to the window, dawn was breaking, it promised to be a lovely September day,

‘Nell? You hate me…I never should have told you, I’m sorry. Its just so hard, they are coming up for ten.’

‘I don’t hate you Hilda, I’m just having trouble digesting it all. Do you know where Anna and Chris are?’

‘Well I met the adoptive parents but I agreed not to have any contact, they’ve moved, I drove passed the house once, I know I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t keep away. There were no signs of children and I asked a next door neighbour and she said they’d gone…abroad. Said they were nice children though…’ smiled Hilda.

‘Abroad? Gosh, I am sorry Hilda,’

‘Don’t be, I should have been braver and less ambitious…less ruthless. I’m glad I let you in Nell, it’s nice for them to feel real again, thank you.’

‘Oh Hilda…’

The intrieguing thing is - if they went abroad, could Hilda at some point have taught, or at least cared for as a headmistress, her own child?

This is really interesting Marianne, thanks.

#38:  Author: Helen PLocation: Cheshire PostPosted: Wed Jul 21, 2004 10:14 pm

Thankyou Marianne, that was lovely.

Is that really the end? I was hoping for her to somehow meet up with them - or even have the whole EBD 'amazing coincidence' plot where it turns out she's already known them for several years... Wink

Seriously though - any plans to continue the story at a later date?

Oh my goodness! Something just struck me. Coz I just read that so fast, and my brain's half asleep, I don't know whether it's possible to work out or whether Marianne told us, how old these kids are. She might end up teaching them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Or the girl, anyway) without her knowing!
FUN!

ok, i'll see what i can do!

thanks!

‘Yes, well, I don’t deserve any pity, look its almost morning, I’m not going to get any sleep now, I might go for a walk,’ decided Hilda briskly.

‘Alright, good idea…I need to wash and find a coffee if I’m going to last today…’ replied Nell, aware that she ought to offer her company, but she just didn’t feel able, she needed to sort out what she’d heard over night in her own head so that she could be that supportive friend Hilda so obviously needed.

The two women went their separate ways, ‘Josephine Bettany!’ called Hilda as soon as she walked out of the school, ‘what are you doing?’

‘Miss Annersley, sorry, I woke very early and couldn’t bare to lie in bed.’

‘Ah yes, me too, now be a good girl and go back inside, it’s not long until the rising bell, off you go,’ ordered Hilda with all the chirpiness she could muster.

#43:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Jul 22, 2004 9:49 am

Why should Nell think badly of Hilda? She was desperate, and considering that Hilda's father was supposed to be a bishop, he was sadly lacking in Christian charity, and so were her brothers. What else was she supposed to do? She made sure the twins had a good home, and it's not as if she just forgot them.

Chapter 2

Anna sat by her bedroom window, wondering as she often did what her real mother might have been doing, whether she thought of herself and Chris as well. Her adoptive parents were good people; she had known that they were adopted all her life, she knew that her mother was an Oxford University student; or had been, ten years ago.

Chris thought less about his beginnings, as long as he had a book and a gang of friends he was content. Anna was different though, she cruised through school, doing well because she was curious, she always wanted to ask why. Why had her mother been forced to give her up? Why do people do wrong? This exceptionally mature enquiring mind gave Janice and Paul concern, they weren’t sure how to harness this passion and ability for the best, they feared trauma for her in later years.

‘Chris, Anna, time to get up now, don’t want to be late!’ called Janice. Shortly afterwards Anna appeared, neat and crisp and ready for school. Later Chris bundled down the stairs, not quite as neat but just as willing.

‘Ah, good children’ marvelled Janice, ‘Good luck with your audition today Anna,’

‘Thank you mummy, I’m sure it will be fine. Besides, I only want narrator,’ Anna was not gifted with an acting talent but her speaking voice was rich and beautiful.

‘Good girl, cheerio then!’ called Janice out of the door.

‘Chris,’ began Anna not long after they had left the house, ‘do you ever think about our real mother?’

Chris conceptual ability was not as developed as Anna’s, ‘No! Why should I? She didn’t want us clearly!’

‘Yes, maybe,’ replied Anna, not sure how to put it into words, but surely there was more to the story than that? In all the books she’d read there was something else, pressured parents, poverty, runaway husband…

Nice to see the children's view of things. I wonder if Anna is bound for the CS??

#52:  Author: Helen PLocation: Cheshire PostPosted: Fri Jul 23, 2004 10:21 pm

This is SO interesting and very well done.

Speaking as an adoptee, Chris and Anna's conversation sounded quite like me and my brother - I was always very interested in wondering about my birth mother whereas my brother's attitude was 'she didn't want me so I don't want to know'. Interesting to see that echoed here!

I can't wait to see how and where they meet - assuming they are going to meet and you are not just stringing us along Wink

Glad you decided to carry on Marianne. It would be nice to see them meet, all three of them, and to see Chris's reaction especially, but in those days it was probably not very likely to happen - then again, there is always room for coincidence in CS land.

*a cliff Evil or Very Mad *

Anna and Chris chatted away in French, the language that came most readily but they were completely bi-lingual thanks to spending most of their lives in France and having English parents so they chatted away easily in both languages, a great gift.

They didn’t realise that trouble was brewing in the Briggs household, there return from school was as tranquil as their journey there, they were very close as siblings, and they complemented one another.

Anna realised something was wrong as soon as she crossed the threshold of the house,
‘Mummy, what’s happened?’

No Marianne. you've misunderstood us. We asked for a continuation of a nice soothing tale about the traumas both parents and children go through over adoption. Cliffs were NOT mentioned. Kindly by-pass nasty cliff and put us back on flat level ground please.

‘Oh hello honey, don’t mind me, just being leaky, we have to go to the montains, its granddaddy, we got a call from a chap called Sir Russell, who’s a doctor out there. I’m afraid granddaddy is very very poorly,’

‘Is he going to die?’ asked Chris bluntly causing Anna to give him a vicious look.

This caused a fresh torrent of tears from Janice but she managed to laugh at her sons tactlessness, ‘Yes poppet, soon, he is an old man, he has lead a good life. Run upstairs and start packing, I’ll be up to help soon, we’ll have to head off tomorrow,’ instructed Janice.

Anna and Chris obeyed, Anna in deep though and Chris rather excited about a quick rush to ‘the hospital in the mountains.’ Anna wondered how se ought to feel about her mothers father Herbert, she’d only met him a couple of times and had never bonded with him. There was nothing really tying her to him, no blood, no bond, nothing.

If they do meet, which I'm assuming will happen now. It would be incredibly sad if they were so close to one another and never knew it. There's also the parents to take into consideration - they might not want to allow the children to meet Hilda.

Poor Hilda - what a trauma. Nice to see the children's POV. Hope Hilda does meet them - she was up at the Sonnalpe a lot at that time.

Chapter three

Saturday at the Chalet school was a good day for its pupils; in fine weather they went off on long walks, made even more exciting by picnics and visits to historical sites.

Thankfully Hilda and Nell were both off duty for that Saturday and were able to catch up on sleep. Hilda felt some sense of relief at having shared her burden but there was another shock in store, another trauma that would bring this old story to the surface.

Hilda and Nell had joined together and were sitting in companionable silence in the garden when one of the office staff came out, looking pale.

‘Hilda, Sir Russell is here to see you, he say’s its important,’

Hilda and Nell both jumped up,

‘Serious? What’s happened?’ questioned Nell anxiously.

‘I didn’t like to ask, sorry Hilda,’

‘No of course, get back to your work, thank you for coming to find me. Nell, will you come with me?’

‘Yes of course, come on,’

‘Ah, Hilda, how are you dear, tired?’ questioned Jem, searching the young women’s face.

‘Yes, a little, I didn’t sleep very well. What do you need to see me for?’

‘Well I wont keep you in suspense. Hilda, we have your father at the san, he contracted TB it seems from a poor parishioner…’

‘W-what? Are John and Peter here? Gosh…my father…I haven’t seen him in…years….ten years!’

‘Dare I ask why?’

‘I cant explain now, I suppose you want me to see him?’

‘Not at all, he has asked for you, he wants to patch things up he says.’

‘He wants to relieve his conscience you mean!’ replied Hilda angrily. ‘Oh, very well, I’ll come…’

Poor Hilda, having to face her father after all this time, especially if he is very ill. Interesting development, thanks Marianne.

and if her father's at the San then she's likely to bump into the children there too. Glad Nell is being supportive.

Chapter Four

The Grey family arrived at the Sonnalpe late at night and settled into their rooms, exhausted, disorientated and ready for a good nights sleep. Anna woke up first the next morning and went to the window; she was overwhelmed by the breath taking beauty of her surroundings. Despite the sorrowful nature of their trip; she had fallen in love with the place.

The family had a long, relaxed, typically continental breakfast before they made the short journey over to the san.
