#67:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Jan 28, 2004 8:15 pm

I was sort of hoping that given the new board I might get a bit of a break until I posted again. I didn't reckon on the mods putting my thread up!

Oh well, here's some more. I'm sorry it's not much and I do feel very guilty....

Chapter 7

The next morning Ali found herself awake early. Lying in bed she thought over the events of the previous day and relief flooded over her, she would not have to try and hide anything any more. She turned over and thought about how supportive Con had been, I'm happy I came here she thought. Briefly she thought back to her parents, it would be strange not spending Christmas with them but she knew that it was Papa's busiest period workwise. There were always reams of book tours, film releases and interviews at this time. As Ali lay musing the rising bell clanged into action.
Slipping out of bed Ali pulled on her dressing gown and slippers then went out into the corridor, she had first bath that day. In the cubicle next door Con opened sleepy eyes, turned over, yawned then tucked her head below the covers. Her momentary bliss did not last long however as the ever vigilant Clem was soon uttering her own wake up call. Reluctantly Con slipped out of bed and drew open the curtains.
''Right that's the lot' Clem proclaimed as Con peeked out, 'Ali was on first bath so I'll assume that she's already gone. Veronique you're next so you had better go along now. Lesley get ready you're third. As Con set to tidying out her cubicle she too found herself thinking about yesterday. She hoped that Ali was alright this morning, they were all expecting a full day of play rehearsal today as it was only two weeks until the big event and they had had yesterday for a preliminary readthrough. Not that Con had done much. Sudden realisation that despite having the largest part in the play she knew none of her words suddenly struck Con, forcing her to stop daydreaming and apply herself to her task.

Another little bit....

Con only managed to catch up with Ali as they were descending the stairs for Fruhstuck.
'How are you?' she asked anxiously
'Fine.' Smiled back Ali, 'I'm looking forward to getting back into things. You did say that we had play rehearsals today didn't you Veronique?'
'Mais Oui,' Veronique joined the pair, 'And we may talk in our own languages as well….Though I don't think we should be talking in the corridors.'
'True' Con responded and the three lapsed into silence, just in time as Julie Lucy passed them with a friendly smile only seconds later. Once happily settled at the tables though there was all round chatter.
Len, Sophia and Fiona had called the three over, again Con looked round for Margot but she seemed to be deep in conversation with Emerence, Daphne Claers, who was in Emerence's form and Mary Lou. Con determined to forget what Julie had told her, it couldn't be true.
'Con! Are you still asleep?' Len asked across the table.
'No…erm.'
'Len was just asking if we all had a good nights sleep' Ali responded giggling, 'I don't know where you were Con because both Veronique and I replied.'
Con blushed, 'Sorry I was…thinking.'
'Well if that's what it does to you then I'd avoid it.' Fiona responded.
'What's this? Mind if I join you?' Lesley Malcolm asked
'Fiona was just telling me to avoid thinking' Con smiled. 'Why are you so late Lesley? Our dorm came down ages ago and I know that the three of us dawdled.'
'Miss Dene caught me on the way down' Lesley responded briefly before settling at the table, 'I'm ravenous. Pass the bread please Con, oh and what were you telling me about avoiding thinking, I might try it!'

I'm sending it to the top of page one so Toria will feel guilty and write some more.

#93:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2004 7:09 pm

It won't be there for long, Jennie!

#94:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2004 8:02 pm

and a little more...I'm writing almost every free moment that I can get...It's just that I don't get many!

'Don't worry, it's just one of Fiona's mad ideas' Sophia replied, 'What did Miss Dene want Lesley?'
'Nothing much… she just wanted me to sort out some play stuff.' Lesley answered,
'Did Papa send you some character sheets?' Asked Ali, 'He said he might last letter…he often does for his books, in case they're read in schools. That way the characters can be portrayed and analysed the way that he wants.'
Lesley began to regret having chosen to sit with such an inquisitive bunch. She had only chosen to sit there because Ali was there but that seemed to be causing more trouble…If only Miss Dene hadn't let me in on the secret she thought. With an effort she pulled herself together and tried to concoct an answer that was truthful but not too revealing. The only problem was that Ali's question was so specific. Feeling that not giving an answer would arouse even more suspicions Lesley replied,
'Yes, Mr Hatherthwaite gave me some more advice on my character…He's decided that he wants Julia played slightly differently to how she was already written. You'll see later on. Is everyone looking forward to rehearsing?'
This was a good move of Lesley's because the tide of chatter swiftly turned from her to the play and although the subject matter was not ideal, Lesley felt that she had no need to worry unduly about giving anything away.

When breakfast finished there was a scurry of movement as the girls tidied and sorted out parts and equipment for rehearsals. Some girls had been allocated to a technical team, in charge of scenery, curtains and props. This was aimed at those who preferred to avoid the acting side and was optional however there had been a good response and the team contained around 20 girls. They had been very organised and for this rehearsal all the structures could be put in, although there was still a lot of painting and alterations to do. However all this activity meant that the hall was chaotic, cluttered with wooden scenes and tables piled high with props.
Margot walked in on the scene late, having pushed her copy of the play deep into the depths of her locker she had struggled to find it again. She looked around for Emerence but couldn't see her, all she could see was Len, Con, Ali and Veronique laughing with the others. Margot doubted that she had been missed. She looked down at her crumpled sheet and suddenly felt very frustrated. Margot felt tears pricking in her eyes and suddenly filled with self pity. Unfortunately at this point Len chose to practically fall into Margot as she ran out of the room to collect her lines. Margot just had time to hear Veronique calling that she would come with Len when Len tripped over a piece of wood and stumbled against Margot as she regained her balance.
'Sorry Margot,' grinned Len, 'I didn't see you there, you're supposed to be backstage' Len looked down, 'Margot! What have you done to your copy it's so creased! You know how expensive it was to have them copied.'
This outburst was too much for Margot who in complete frustration scrunched the sheets up into a ball and hurled it at Veronique who was approaching at speed. Veronique ducked, then stumbled against one of the unfinished scenes. The scene toppled over with a great clatter, sending the props falling of a table into Margot. Margot grabbed the nearest prop and threw it across the room before turning and heading for the door calling behind her,
'I hate you all!'
Margot had not stopped to take aim so the candlestick did not hit anyone but the room was immediately silenced as Miss Wilson appeared at the door, a furious expression on her face. As Margot stormed out of the room she pushed the figure in front of her to the side. Miss Wilson stepped to the side and grabbed the angry girl.
'Julie please get this room back into order. Miss O'Ryan will be along briefly to begin the rehearsal. If anyone is hurt send them to Matron.'
'Yes Miss Wilson' responded Julie solemly. She didn't have a difficult job because everyone in the hall was numb with shock. Len was white and Con had an expression of horror as she met Julie's eyes. Julie Lucy herself had to take a few calming breaths before trying to organise the crowd.
Meanwhile Miss Wilson ushered a sobbing Margot along to Miss Annersley having witnessed the whole scene from the door. She knocked briefly on the door and entered. Miss Annersley looked at Margot's tear streaked face and wondered what had happened but when she looked up at Miss Wilson's grim face she was in no doubt. Miss Annersley was suddenly filled with a sinking feeling in her heart. Realising that she needed to understand the situation Miss Annersley opened the door to the side room,
'Margot, please wait in here. I will speak to you later.' She said in icy tones. Margot numbly sat down to wait whilst Miss Annersley turned to her colleague,
'Do you think I need to call Jack?'
Miss Wilson nodded as she outlined the tale to Hilda.
Having heard Miss Annersley nodded,
'I'm going to call Jack to come down. Would you find Julie for me, she may have noticed something. I know that Len was having problems settling in this term but I assumed, wrongly it seems, that Margot had not been affected by our new arrival.'
Miss Wilson nodded once again,
'What will you do Hilda?'
'I don't know Nell. I feel sorry for Margot as she obviously isn't happy but she knows that this is not the way to behave. I'll speak to Jack and hear his opinions when he gets here, it may be that we can find a solution.'
Nell Wison nodded, 'If it were any other girl…'
'I know…but it's not. It's Margot. We've had that girl all her life, I don't like to think that we've failed her.'
Nell nodded again before leaving to seek out Julie. Hilda turned to the phone to call Jack at work. It was not a pleasant task but to her relief Jack was professional and agreed to come down immediately. He also agreed with Hilda's decision not to consult Jo immediately.

yay thank you Toria

did you haev a nice time in Rome?

#159:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Tue Feb 17, 2004 11:55 pm

I had a great time in Rome, lots of my friends went so we had a great time being our own crazy selves, though we did get a few wierd looks when we started singing head, shoulders, knees and toes on the bus!

Meanwhile Margot's temper was rapidly cooling off and her concern growing as she realised how stupid her behaviour had been. I do try and be sensible she thought, it's just that Len and Con are so much better and that makes me frustrated. At this point Miss Annersley looked round the door,
'I've phoned your father Margot and he will be with us shortly. When he arrives I will expect a full account of your actions.'
'Yes Miss Annersley' Margot replied meekly and Hilda was relieved to note that Margot seemed noticeably calmer. I really can't understand Margot thought Hilda as she closed the door. Margot was the brightest of the three and yet was constantly being overshadowed by Len and Con. Hilda wished she knew how to get Margot to apply herself as she had great potential yet her temper…a knock at the door signalled the arrival of Julie Lucy, who Hilda hoped would be able to shed more light on the events.
'I'm so sorry Miss Annersley' Julie said as she entered the room, 'This is all my fault.'
'Don't be silly Julie, your responsibilities as head girl do not extend that far. It is enough for me that you may be able to shed some light on Margot's actions.'
'Being a triplet.' Julie looked up. 'It seems that all three of them have been having problems. I always knew that Con found it hard but when Ali arrived she found her own niche that didn't revolve around being part of a three. She was Con, rather than a trip. To my surprise Len became really moody, when I spoke to her I found out that she too was struggling, she had lost her position and didn't know how to express herself, she was jealous of the others and didn't know where she belonged. With Len it was easy, she's always been mature and she desperately wanted to find a way around the problem. I gave her a bit of a nudge and that was all she needed. Everyone knew who Len was, she just didn't realise it. The teachers just accepted that Len had had a bad week. I didn't realise that Margot was having problems until I spoke to Con. She was telling me how she had always felt left out, Len had had loads of friends and Margot had Emerence. I was going to tell her that Len felt the same when I thought of Margot. Con said that Margot had been a bit odd lately but put it down to disappointment at not being on the removes list. I thought I must be wrong and forgot about it. I'm really sorry Miss Annersley…I think I should resign as head girl.'

'Julie!' snapped Miss Annersley, 'I have told you that this is not your fault, only I can bear that responsibility. You've done a great deal of good.' Miss Annersley stopped, then continued in a softer tone, 'I'm sorry for snapping at you Julie but this is hard for me too, I need you behind me. Can you imagine what it would do to the school if you resigned now?'
'I'm sorry Miss Annersley.' Conceded Julie, 'I…I…didn't think of it like that, of course I'll stay.'
'Thank you Julie. You are an excellent head girl, don't forget it.'
Julie nodded and moved to the door, 'And Margot?'
'You may speak to her later Julie. Jack is coming down shortly and I will send for you as soon as we make any decisions.'
'Thank you Miss Annersley.' Julie dropped her curtsey and left for her study where she lay on her bed and shed a few tears. Here she was interrupted by the arrival of Con,
'J..Julie? I thought I might find you here.' Julie looked up and saw that the younger girl had been crying, rapidly she brushed away her own tears and spoke to Con,
'Come in, sweetheart.'
Con rushed into Julie's arms.
'I'm so sorry Julie…You told me and I didn't believe you.'
'Don't worry Con, maybe this is the way that it is meant to be.'
Con mused then turned to Julie,
'Did you speak to Miss Annersley? Nell looked mad when she grabbed Margot.'
'Yes…' Julie paused, unsure of what to say to Con.
'What will happen Julie?'
'I don't know, but your papa is coming down to see Margot…I don't think she's very happy at the moment Con.'
'I know…and I thought she was, Len and I were so happy and everything was just perfect until this.'
'Oh Con, look I really need you to help me now. I've got to get the play rehearsal underway and all of you really need to just go with it. I know it's hard but there's no point worrying about Margot now…she wouldn't want it and it won't help.'
'OK.' Con brushed her tears back, 'thank you Julie…you always understand everything.'
Julie herself straightened her hair whilst thinking about the untruth of Con's last statement. Still, she could see what Miss Annersley had meant, it wouldn't have helped Con at all if she had resigned.

#172:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 10:24 am

As Julie made her way to the hall, Jack was driving down to the chalet wondering what Margot had done now. He knew that Con hadn't said anything when he had seen her and had assumed that everything was going well. Of course he understood that Margot had a temper but he had hoped that she had learnt by now to control it. The only thing Jack could think of was the removes list, Jo had told him that Len was on too, so Margot was perhaps worried that the other two would go up without her. Still, to Jack that didn't make sense. Margot knew that a remove needed work and that it would be unlikely that her two sisters would both go up, then there was what Hilda had told him…It sounded more like Margot had been upset and frustrated but then her behaviour! Jack's stomach rolled as he thought of Margot throwing props across the room and contemplated on the damage that would have been caused had she managed to hit anyone. Jack was so deep in thought that he almost missed the turning to the Chalet and had to reverse backwards before heading down the drive. As he pulled up he was met by Nell Wilson. Jack noticed the tense expression on her face so beyond exchanging greetings the two said nothing and walked to the study in silence. To Jack the school had an eerie feel, the corridors were normally filled with a gentle hum of noise and when play rehearsals were going on, there was normally tense excitement and wild cries of laughter as people missed cues, came in wrongly, fell over…Today there was nothing. They were clearly all in the hall for there was some sound from that direction but the reherasal appeared to be cotinuing in silence. As they reached the door, Jack knocked and walked in. Miss Wilson exchanged a few words with Miss Annersley then left, closing the door softly behind her. Jack sank down into the nearest chair, recognising the seriousness of the situation.

Jack and Jo are sort of hopelessly optimistic about Margot, aren't they? It will be interesting to see what he is told.

#174:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 4:49 pm

Why on earth are they letting Margot go without some sort of treatment for her temper? Perhaps PatMac has explained it better than we can. Hope Jack can do some good.

*hopes that something can be done to help Margot

#176:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 5:34 pm

Here's some more!

Hilda Annersley looked at Jack and thought of what her attitude would be if it were any other parent…
'Where's Margot?' Jack asked. Hilda looked up,
'Do you want to see her now Jack? I haven't spoken to her myself yet…I thought you might want me to outline the situation first.'
'You did that on the phone. I'm sorry to be rude Hilda but my daughter is clearly unhappy and you have failed to deal with that.'
Miss Annersley looked up, shocked. She would have expected a similar response from Jo but she thought that Jack might have been more understanding. With difficulty Hilda restrained herself and attempted to see things from Jack's point of view.
'There is no point in blaming ourselves Jack. Of course Margot may have behaved differently in a different situation but the responsibility for her actions is her own. It is up to her to control her temper…Something which she clearly cannot do. Ignorance is not an excuse, Margot has been at the school long enough to know the rules and she also knows of the injuries that can be caused by actions such as those she has just taken.'
Jack looked down, he had a vague sense of wanting to defend Margot but couldn't…her actions had been appalling, and there was no doubt that Margot had lost her temper. Jack suddenly felt deeply ashamed of his daughter.
'I'm sorry Hilda, you were quite right. Margot's actions cannot be tolerated. She does need to learn self control…I was just trying to find the root of the problem.'
'Jack, the root of the problem is perfectly clear. Margot is jealous of Len and Con. It's part of being a triplet, all three of them have had problems becoming individuals this year. However the fact remains that Len and Con both managed to control their feelings without taking it out on other people and having temper tantrums that are more fitting of a child in the kindergarten.'
Again Jack looked down, of course he understood and of course Hilda was right. Margot was enough at home in the school that had she been upset she could have easily sought out help. Margot could even have asked to see him when he was in school yesterday.
'I understand Hilda, I'm sorry but she is my daughter.'
'Don't worry Jack, I do understand too. It's just that we all must realise that our policy of 'understanding' Margot has failed to get us anywhere. If she still thinks that she can blame other people then this school has failed to teach her an important lesson and it is not through want of trying.' Hilda's tone was grave and Jack found himself wishing that Jo was here, still she might find it even harder than him to comprehend.
'I need to call Jo' Jack said eventually. Hilda frowned, she had hoped that she would be able to get somewhere without having to cope with Jo,
'I don't think that's a good idea right now Jack, I was intending to speak to Margot.'
'Oh, Right.' Jack mumbled vaguely.
'I'm going to call her in now…Jack do you want to stay.'
Jack felt like saying no as he was filled with insecurity but he had a feeling that Hilda's closing words had been a statement rather than a question. He was glad that he was sitting down but as his daughter entered the room he made the effort to look up, he had to convey his feelings of annoyance and disappointment somehow.
'Well Margot,' said Miss Annersley eventually, 'What have you got to say for yourself?'

Please stay tough Hilda. Margot needs it.

Glad to see that Hilda stood up to Jack.

#178:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 5:48 pm

And what does she have to say for herself?!

#179:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 7:57 pm

Margot turned to look at Jack who remained serious and silent. Feeling slightly unsettled Margot looked down at the floor and muttered, 'I don't know' in a small voice.
Miss Annersley did not respond but waited for Margot to continue further. However after several tense minutes when none seemed forthcoming she said,
'Carry on Margot.' Hilda was determined not to give Margot any help but wanted the story from her.
'I…I.. I'm sorry' stammered Margot, feeling very small.
Miss Annersley sighed inwardly. Margot seemed to be going out of her way to make things difficult.
'Margot! I want to know what happened, I don't have time for this silliness.'
Hilda's sharp tone ought to have shaken Margot into being sensible but given Margot's inner confusion it merely left her stunned and with a vague impression that everyone did hate her after all.
'Margot! I'm waiting!' Again Hilda tried to evoke some sort of response out of Margot and this time she was successful.
'I was feeling annoyed' began Margot, 'Everyone hates me here, even Len and Con don't like me anymore. They're part of a four and they leave me out of everything.' That said Margot burst into tears. Jack looked up at Hilda, it seemed that their worst fears had been confirmed.
'Is that it?' Hilda asked contemptuously. 'You think that that gives you the excuse to throw props at other people, have a tantrum in the middle of a rehearsal with little concern for the others around you? Did you really think that you were the only one to feel left out? Of course Len and Con have had similar feelings, so does everyone in the school at times. However they are able to talk to others and seek sensible solutions whereas you get overwhelmed by self pity. I had hoped for more from you Margot, given the time that you've had at this school.'
Margot frowned deeply attempting to stop her tears. She understood what Miss Annersley was saying but she didn't seem to understand that she was different…that she was Margot not someone else. She had always been neglected, it was only because she knew everyone that she had tantrums. Margot wanted desperately to be grown up and to talk in a mature way but something made her feel awkward in the presence of so many people who thought that they knew who she was…It was so difficult to change her approach. Miss Annersley looked at Margot's sulky response with sadness, and called Nell Wilson back in.
'Miss Wilson, take Margot to Matron, then come straight back. Jack, I'm going to call Jo now.'
Jack nodded, 'Do you want me to call Hilda?'
'No, I'll do it myself.'
Jack nodded again and contemplated his daughter's response. He felt amazingly guilty for failing to recognise Margot as herself but instead giving her an image that she couldn't change. He suddenly realised that Margot was not so reliant on himself and Jo as the others but was more independent. He and Jo had been crushing that spirit, assuming that Margot would be happy following the others rather than allowing her to make her own decisions. Jack became aware of Hilda's voice directed at him once more,
'I've called Jo…She'll be here shortly. I want to meet her at the gate…Do you mind waiting here Jack, Nell should be back soon.'
'Of course not.' Jack remained polite and had a strange sensation of being removed from the situation, it felt as if they were talking about someone else's daughter rather than his. Jack was startled by a knock on the door, assuming that Miss Wilson was being polite he called'
'Come in!'
'Papa!' Len rushed into his arms. 'Is Margot in lots of trouble? Will she still be in the play? She didn't do anything very much Papa, she was just in one of her moods. You're not angry are you?'
'Yes I am' Jack responded briefly. 'Your sister is old enough to know that that behaviour cannot be accepted, she could have really injured one of you. Now Len, I don't think you should be here now so I suggest you get back to where you are supposed to be before anyone notices that you are missing. I don't want any more trouble today.'
Len took a breath then realised that her father was right. She had to learn to grow up and understand other people's feelings,
'Sorry Papa. I shouldn't have come…I'll go back to the others now. Con just wanted you to tell Margot that she's sorry and that Julie told her that she wasn't happy but she thought she was and…and…She can become part of our group if she wants.' Len ended in some confususion.
'Len! I appreciate your feelings but you must understand that now is neither the time nor the place.'

Thanks for that bit, Toria.

I can see that Len is only trying to look out for her sister, but she's still trying to get special "I'm a Maynard" treatment - no one else would be able to go to their parents to get them to plead the case for a sibling. I think that Jack did the right thing in telling her that it wasn't the time or place.

*agrees with Chelsea* I wonder if calling Jo is the wrong thing - surely she will just sympathise with Margot!

I think that the whole Maynard way of dealing with Margot has been wrong.

At least PatMac has given us an explanation for it, the trouble is that I can't stop seeing this drabble in the light of what she's written.

#187:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2004 6:02 pm

More story... I started back at school today but as I have a cold I've missed orchestra and have written this for you instead!

'Len! I appreciate your feelings but you must understand that now is neither the time nor the place.'
Len stopped, then backed out of the room, she could understand that Papa was upset with Margot but everyone would understand where she was and what she was doing. However given the imperative tone of her father Len felt that she had little choice but to obey and mooched back to rehearsal none the wiser.
'There you are Len! I was looking for you.' Commented Ali as Len slid back into one of the rooms off the hall. With no response from Len forthcoming Ali glanced at Len's face, wondering if she had been worrying about Margot. However there was no evidence of tears and surely Len would have turned to Con.
'Where were you?' asked Ali.
'I went to find Papa, I spoke to Con and she said that Julie had told her what Margot was feeling…Con seemed to think that Margot had been a bit stupid over the whole thing. But I thought that someone ought to explain it to Miss Annersley so when I saw her going outside I realised that Papa must still be in the study. I went along and told him. I thought he'd thank me.'
'But he didn't?' Ali said simply.
'No, he didn't want to listen, he kept on going on about me missing rehearsal and he's really angry with Margot anyway.'
Privately Ali admired the actions of Jack, after all Len's scheme did sound very underhand. Ali didn't have any sisters and it seemed unfair that those that did could get others to plead their case. However she didn't voice these thoughts but instead another.
'Len, what is the 'whole thing'?'
Len looked up knowing that she could not answer,
'why? What did I say?'
Ali may not have realised what lay behind Margot's actions but she was perceptive enough to realise that Len was dodging the question. Something of what Con had told her earlier when she came back from Julie suddenly clicked with Ali and she asked,
'Len? Were you jealous of me?'
Faced with such a direct question Len had little choice but to respond and she replied blushing,
'Yes I was in the beginning. I was always the best at everything and you were so much better. Then Con and you really got on, it was always me who had the friends and the three of us triplets would stick together, me and Con more than Margot. It was odd, I've never felt like that before. Then Julie spoke to me and…made me see sense.'
Ali smiled at Len's way of putting it,
'You shouldn't have been jealous Len, I'm me and you're you. And as for family, you're lucky that you are a triplet, you three will always be special to each other but you can make your own friends as well. It's just me in my family so I have to make friends with other people.'
Len looked up, remembering what had happened yesterday, 'Sorry Ali. I know I'm lucky to have Con, Margot and the others. I shouldn't be whinging about them to you.'
'I don't mind.' Replied Ali, 'I mean, I'd rather you told me than you didn't and kept it all bottled up. But how does this relate to Margot? I thought she was happy with Emerence and we've made an effort to include her.'
'According to Julie, Margot was feeling left out like me…so she got frustrated..' Len stopped, what had seemed like such a reasonable explanation earlier seemed silly and childish. Len frowned and tried to think of another aspect,
'I suppose she felt jealous too, because she's a Maynard we're a part of the school, maybe she felt she wasn't getting enough attention…'
'But we're all a part of the school' said Ali sensibly, 'No one else throws props about the room because they aren't getting more attention than everyone else.'
'I suppose not.' Said Len who was finding herself forced to accept a complete change in her previous thinking. She was special, and being a Maynard was part of that. But that didn't make her more special than the others.
'So why did she?' Ali continued.

End of chap 7

'So why did she?' Ali continued.
Confronted once again, Len found that she was lost for words, again she thought of all the excuses they had been through with Margot. How could she explain to Ali that Margot's temper was just a part of her that had to be accepted. Suddenly Len realised how many times Margot had got into trouble as a result of her temper, and how many times she had been let off. However Len knew that this time things would be different.
'Because she's stupid.' Len concluded thoughtfully. 'She's been told tons of times that she's got to learn to manage her temper and now that she's in Switzerland we're part of the more senior school…Of course Papa and Auntie Hilda can't just let it go…'. Overwhelmed by sudden insights and frustration with her sister Len found tears flowing down her face.
Ali started at Len, shocked and unsure of what to do. She had never had anyone in tears in front of her before. She remembered how understanding the others had been of her though and decided to make an effort.
'Oh Len, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked.' Ali moved to put an arm around Len.

Thank you Toria, it's good to see Len looking at her own ideas from a different point of view. It's a pity really, that she was so ready to make excuses for Margot's temper up until now - that must have made it harder for Margot to even attempt to control herself.

Chapter 8

'Hilda!' Jo came running up the path. 'What's wrong? Margot hasn't had one of her tempers again has she?'
'Well, I wouldn't put it quite that lightly.' Hilda said seriously, managing to crush Jo's over-exuberence.
'Why, what's happened?' Jo asked anxiously.
'I hate to tell you Jo but quite frankly, Margot's 'temper' is no longer a valid excuse for her attitude. Margot has been out of sorts all term and throwing candlesticks at other pupils because you're in a bad mood is not a reasonable way to take that out. What's more Jo, she won't even tell me her reasons behind her actions, she just goes all sulky. I've sent her to Matron for the moment but I'll call her down again when I've spoken to you and your husband.'
'Me and Jack…' Jo responded numbly. She couldn't think of anything to say in response to Hilda's report on her daughter. 'Can I speak to Jack first Hilda?'
'Yes, I'll leave you in the study. I'll talk to Nell and the others and we'll meet again in half an hour.' With that Hilda left Jo outside the study door.
Jo pushed the door open gently and went into the study. At her entrance Jack looked up,
'Jo…we need to talk…about Margot.'
'I know', Jo sank down into the chair next to her husband, 'Hilda told me, I feel so stupid. I should have seen that Margot was unhappy.'
Jack shook his head, 'You couldn't know Jo, not unless she told us. I just feel bad that she wasn't able to confide in us.'
Jo nodded, 'I know…I was always the one that people turned to at school…I should have been able to understand Margot's feelings. After all I had to cope with the 'family' stuff when I was at school with my sister.'
Jack nodded slowly, 'I didn't even think twice about putting Margot into the Chalet. We even managed to move her to the Swiss Branch with the others. I didn't realise that being a triplet was so much hard work.'
'That's life.' Added Jo, glumly, 'What are we going to do Jack?'
'Wait and see what Hilda says' Jack responded. 'She's more used to these sort of things than we are. Then we can talk with Margot…and I'm pretty cross with her…and sort things out.'
Jo nodded again, 'But Jack you will make her stay here won't you?…And, get over things.'
Jack turned away, he couldn't help thinking that the best solution at the moment was to move Margot elsewhere. Margot would then have a chance to become her own person, as she matured she would be able to accept that she was as special as the others. What was more, Jack knew that Margot was the most intelligent of the three and thought perhaps that the 'family' atmosphere was not benefiting Margot.
'I don't know Jo' Jack concluded eventually. 'If Margot is honestly not happy then maybe we should consider somewhere else.'

Well, of course!! Jo judges everyone on her own feelings!!!

#199:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2004 6:29 pm

Jo bit her lip, 'But Jack, we want her near to us…and another school might not understand.'
'But Jo it's what Margot wants that matters. She's old enough to be away from us, it will give her more independence. By the fact that the school won't 'understand' she'll have to pull herself together. I'm not prepared to let her go on behaving the way that she is without taking action. If Margot resolves to stay and try a lot harder then fine if that's what she wants. I'm not sure that she will though.'
'But her health…'
'Margot's fine. Jo, other people entrust their children to us. Surely we can entrust Margot to someone else?'
'…I suppose…' The two paused in conversation.
'Jo? Were you always happy at the Chalet?'
'Yes'
'Can you see why Margot might not be?'
'Yes, but she's wrong. At the Chalet I knew everyone. I didn't get special treatment….I just can't see why Margot isn't happy Jack.'
Jack shrugged. There seemed to be little more to say, he had put his point across and that was that,
'Of course, Hilda may not want her to stay…then we'd be forced to move her. It would be harder to find somewhere for her if that happened. Even if Hilda let her stay another incident would make her change her mind. The root of the problem is the way Margot is coping with the school therefore if we move her we're giving her the chance to prove herself. I think she'll respond positively Jo.'
Fortunately perhaps, Jo did not have a chance to respond for at that point Hilda Annersley stepped back into the room accompanied by Nell Wilson.
Hilda looked anxiously at the pair, Jo seemed to be very nervous whilst Jack seemed to be relaxed.
'May we talk before we invite my daughter down?' Jack asked.
'If you wish. I've spoken to the staff and they say that Margot's behaviour and performance this term has been acceptable. In other words Margot needs to do better…'
'I agree.' Jack nodded and turned to Jo who also nodded.
'This isn't the first time that Margot's temper has got the better of her. Each time she has been warned and told that she must improve. Her lack of earnest apology is not encouraging…However the staff believe that Margot can give more. If I am satisfied that Margot has understood her mistakes and is honestly sorry then she can stay…I'll give her until the end of term to apologise.'
Jack looked away. It was as he expected…Margot could stay, this time but next time?
'Jo?' Hilda asked.
'Would you mind if I spoke to Margot Hilda?'
'I'll speak to her myself Jo.'
Miss Annersley got up. 'I'm going to fetch Margot now…'
As Hilda left the room Jack tapped his fingers on the desk and tried to avoid looking at Jo however it was Jo herself that spoke...
'Jack. You were right. I think we should.'
Jack looked at Jo seriously, 'I think it's best.'
At this point Hilda returned with Margot.
'Margot go and sit with your parents.'
As Margot moved towards her parents she felt the love that the two were offering her. Margot made up her mind…For them she would try and stick with this school…she would try.
'I'm sorry' she said. 'I was wrong…I shouldn't have lost my temper…I won't do it again.'
Hilda Annersley sat back relieved,
'Right. I'm glad you could see that you were very wrong Margot and I will accept your apology. However you must understand that if anything like this happens again, or if I get a bad report on you from your teachers I will have no choice but to ask you to leave the school.'
Margot looked down and nodded.
At this point Hilda looked to Nell who got up and escorted Jo and Jack from the room.
'Hilda will just finish with Margot then you can go back in.' she said.
'I suppose she won't be in the play?' Jack commented.
'No.' Nell Wilson said, 'Hilda will be breaking that news to her now…she'll be moved down to LIVB as well…her behaviour hardly merits the A division.'
Jack frowned, 'Miss Wilson would you mind if I spoke to Jo alone for a few moments?'
'Of course not. I'll leave you here.' With that Nell Wilson walked off to break the news to the other staff.
'Darling Margot' commented Jo. 'You were right Jack…she isn't happy but she's going through it for us.'
'I know' Jack nodded, admiring his daughters efforts. 'I want her to move school Jo. Even if she works she won't achieve anything with this hanging over her.'
Jo nodded, 'now we just need to speak to Margot.'

Thank you Toria.

Can understand Jo's attitude as the school was her home and life for so long, and she had been credited for helping make it what it was. That does not mean it is right that she should harm one of her children by her attitude.

Love Jack's question of was Jo really happy at the school. Was she?

#206:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 2:13 pm

Yes, Jo was happy at the school as she was the centre of a lot of attention. That said, why should Margot be happy there, just because she's a Maynard? The school isn't, or shouldn't be, a sausage factory churning out identical products.

#209:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Sat Feb 28, 2004 6:05 pm

Despite Jo's light tone, she still took Margot's move very seriously. Unlike Jack, Jo felt that Margot had failed by not being happy at the Chalet. Unable to blame Margot Jo blamed herself for not letting Margot have the same image as Len. Why hadn't she nurtured Margot's obvious talents to enable her to succeed? However Jo's thoughts were rapidly interrupted as the study door swung open and a sobbing Margot appeared at the door. Jo drew her daughter gently into her arms only vaguely hearing Hilda's instructions that Margot should go to bed for the rest of the afternooon. Jack however was more than ready to deal with the problems…
'Actually Miss Annersley, Jo and I were wondering if we could take Margot home for the rest of the day. We really want to talk over the issues with her and make sure that she understands her commitment.'
Hilda Annersley stopped to consider Jack's proposal. She firmly believed that Margot needed to understand that she was wrong and that the school needed to adopt a tougher approach. However Jo and Jack seemed to understand that and she could hardly argue with Jack.
You may take Margot home for the weekend.' She conceded eventually, although reluctantly.
'Thank you' Jo smiled and Margot found herself swept along the corridors to Jack's car. Jack was reluctant to meet any family and be forced into lengthy explanations and Jo was keen to get home and talk with her daughter.
The three said little in the car, Margot sobbed gently, stung by Miss Annersley's words and the sacrifices that she was making. As they reached Freudesheim Jack stepped out of the car.
'Come on in Margot, stop sobbing now…Jo will you get Anna to prepare Margot's room.'
'Of course' Jo disappeared.
'Margot' began Jack seriously when they got inside, 'I don't approve of your actions today at all but as I'm sure Miss Annersley has put our point of view across I shall say little else. Just this, if you find that sort of thing happening again deal with it with some common sense.'
Margot nodded, there was little that she could object to in her father's words.
'However' Jack continued.'This incident has shown myself and your Mamma that you are not happy at the Chalet. I know that you can do better academically and I don't think the school is helping you to fulfil that potential. Perhaps you don't get on with the 'family' atmosphere. I can understand that but if you want to achieve your goals you must be prepared to work with motivation. Both your Mamma and I feel that you may be better if you were at another school.'
Margot stared at her Papa incredulously, he had understood after all!
'Well?' asked Jack, 'I don't mind either way, I'm just giving you the option. Don't worry about your Mamma…she wants you to be happy.'
'I want to move' said Margot softly.
Jack nodded, 'We'll look through some of the prospectuses tonight if you want. We've got lots at home as Jo was comparing the fees with the Chalet ones the other day. If you change your mind that's not a problem. I won't contact Hilda until Monday.'

Jack nodded, 'We'll look through some of the prospectuses tonight if you want. We've got lots at home as Jo was comparing the fees with the Chalet ones the other day. If you change your mind that's not a problem. I won't contact Hilda until Monday.'
It was at this point that Jo herself descended the stairs,
'There Margot! Your room is ready now so you can go up and get tidied up if you want.'
'Thank you Mamma' Margot murmered before casting an agonised glance at her father who nodded and indicated that she followed her Mamma's advice.
'Well?' Jo asked anxiously after what she considered sufficient time to allow her daughter to make her way upstairs.
'She wants to move school Jo. We have to let her go.'
'Why?' asked Jo, 'I thought we'd sorted it with Hilda. Jack, I think Margot wants to stay…We've never had anyone want to leave the Chalet.'
'She told me herself.' Jack responded. He could see Jo's problems but was beginning to get a little frustrated at Jo's lack of comprehension. 'Jo…She's not anyone else, she's Margot and the Chalet doesn't suit her. We didn't even consider schools for Margot, we just entered her at the Chalet because it suited us.'
'But Jack we've failed' continued Jo, 'I can't tell Hilda, or face her again after this…and what about the others…'
'We haven't failed Jo, not yet. We would fail if we kept Margot at the school, as for Hilda I'll tell her so you don't have to worry. The others can stay, they love the school and are happy there. Margot isn't. Now is the best time to move her, she's eleven and many schools start at that age.'

Jo paused, thinking hard, Jack's reasoning seemed to be logical but even so…no one had ever done anything like this before.
'It's decided now anyway.' Jack continued, filling Margot's heart with relief as she was listening outside the door. 'Margot wants to move and I want her to move…We can't send her back now. I'll go in and see Hilda on Monday and tell her our decision.' Jack moved towards the door with the intention of going to his office to sort out some paperwork but at the sound of a slight scuffle he paused, unwilling to uncover Margot.
Jo had turned her back on Jack and was gazing out of the window biting her lip pensively,
'Where shall we send her Jack? Back to England, after we went to all that trouble to bring her out with us…She could go to the English branch.'
'No.'
'Wistful thinking….'
'Jo! Do you not understand, I want Margot to have an education, we've got piles of prospectuses at home and we'll look over them this evening.'
'Those? But Jack do you think they're appropriate…I mean Margot isn't exactly academic. I was thinking of somewhere smaller…perhaps she could stay in Switzerland. If she went to the local school we could keep an eye on her.'
Jack felt like saying that that was the first near sensible suggestion that Jo had managed to come up with but didn't, instead he repeated his desire to discuss the matter later and left with a closing comment of,
'I've got paperwork to do Jo. Call Margot down and discuss it with her, you know where to find me.'
As Jack left Jo walked around the room, still deep in thought, she knew what the problem was…Jack wanted Margot to excel and deep down Jo knew that she had that potential, however it was never the role that Jo had envisiged for Margot.
'If he'd have got this passion with one of the boys then I'd have had no objection,' Jo mused out loud, 'after all we had to send them away anyway and to have one of them doing really well would be brilliant…but Margot!'
'Jo, what on earth is wrong?' with a shock Jo heard her sister's voice coming across the room,
'Madge! What are you…I thought….'
'Hilda called me, she said you might need some support.'
'Support?….For what…I…Madge what do you mean?'
'Jo, no need to get so flustered. She told me about Margot…Jo this is getting really out of hand…are you sure that the best place for Margot is at the Chalet?'
Madge looked up and was surprised to see Jo in tears, she had expected an angry outburst, but not this.

Thank you for that Toria - how can Joey think Margot is not academic when for years they've said that she was the clever one, cleverer than Len, if she'd only apply herself?

Obviously she forgot about that little point! And I like the references to the boys - bit of influence from "Stephen", Toria?

Chapter 9

Meanwhile back at the school Ali and Len found themselves joined by Con and Veronique.
'Len! What is wrong?' cried Veronique upon seeing Len in tears.
'It's nothing…just me being silly…we should get back shouldn't we?'
'Yes' said Con, nodding wisely at her sister. 'Julie missed you and sent the two of us to find you, she wants to get the rehearsal underway now.'
'We've already wasted an hour' commented Ali, glancing at her pretty wristwatch, 'Although I don't suppose it really matters.'
'Do you think they'll recast Margot's part?' asked Veronique, knowing that after such an outburst Margot would be lucky to remain in the play.
'I don't know…' Con trailed off. It felt a bit odd not knowing about Margot and she didn't really know what to think.
At this point the girls reached the hall and were motioned in by Julie. The others were sitting down by the stage, evidently awaiting an announcement.
'Miss Wilson will be with us shortly to tell us what is going to happen' Julie said by way of explanation. Ali nodded and gave Len's hand a supportive squeeze.
'Where did she go?' asked Con
'To make a phone call I think' replied Julie. 'She won't be long now Con.'
True to Julie's words a few minutes later a slightly harassed Nell Wilson appeared.
'Girls! Thank you for waiting so patiently, the rehearsal will proceed in a few minutes. Margot has gone home for the weekend but we expect her back on Monday. She will, of course not be taking part in the play, Lucie Robathan has been chosen to take over her role.'
Ali and Veronique looked anxiously towards Len and Con but thankfully they seemed to take the news well and the rehearsal continued almost as normal. Con could see that Julie looked slightly upset and the atmosphere wasn't perfect. There was almost a sigh of relief when the girls were told that they would be back in lessons that afternoon as waiting between scenes little else was talked about but Margot's actions.
Once the girls had finished eating they were dismissed to their form rooms where LIVA was told the news that Margot had been moved down. This Ali noted provoked a frown from Len and indeed she didn't think it a good idea either. Ali stole a glance at Con, next to her who shrugged but didn't look entirely happy. However there was little time for doing anything else as the girls were rapidly set to task on their English lesson, where they were continuing to write their short stories. Miss Wells gave the girls some poetry to act as inspiration and the lesson was running smoothly.

************************************************

'Jo, what's wrong?'
'She wants to leave Madge…Jack wants her to leave, he thinks the Chalet isn't educating her properly, you know how he's got this thing about Margot being talented. Now he's said that he's going to send her away…I've failed Madge, I've failed.'
'Jo! Pull yourself together. Listen to me. Much as I hate having to admit that someone has withdrawn their daughter from the school, I do understand that these are exceptional circumstances. I'm not sure that the family atmosphere would have suited me. Jo you have got to let Margot have a proper chance, you've given her a reputation of being naughty since he was three. You've got to let her be herself. I hope you don't mind Jo but I've brought over some prospectuses.'
Jo was silent. She had thought that at least Madge would support her.
'It's time to grow up Joey baba' said Madge softly.
'Can I talk to Jack?' said Jo in reply.
Madge glanced up, 'Are you sure you don't want to look through a couple first?' She brandished a pair of glossy prospectuses.
Thus coaxed Jo agreed and flicked through a couple moodily before she was startled by a gentle tap on the door.

It sounds nasty to say it (and it's perfectly in character) but Jo is very selfish, isn't she? She doesn't think about whether it's right for Margot, but whether it's best for her and the way she thinks of things.

#253:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 12:11 pm

Nasty? Well, if Joet doesn't want people calling her selfish it's time she started seeing things from other's POV's instead of her own all the time. Until then she deserves to be criticised.

#254:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 12:16 pm

That's true...

#255:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 6:06 pm

I am trying to make Jo vaguely realistic and she's not supposed to be really nasty! I keep trying to make her more understanding but then she contrives to be otherwise. Ah well, in this scene she hasn't really got a lot of choice!

Thus coaxed Jo agreed and flicked through a couple moodily before she was startled by a gentle tap on the door.
'Mamma,' came the voice, 'may I come in?'
'Margot!' Jo mouthed at Madge, 'quick, put these away', Jo rapidly hit the prospectuses under a pile of magazines and her actions were followed by a rather bemused looking Madge.
'Come in sweetheart' called Jo, 'Your Auntie Madge is here.'
Margot slipped round the door carrying a pile of prospectuses under her arm. Upon seeing Madge she looked a little put out but Madge hastily moved to restore the situation,
'Well, Margot. Your Mamma has told me of your decision and I am very happy for you. I'm sure you will benefit from the chance to show people who you are and what you can achieve.'
Margot's eyes shone and she nodded eagerly. From what she had overheard earlier her Mamma hadn't taken to the situation at all but if she had recommended it to Auntie Madge then she must have understood wrongly.
'I think so too Auntie Madge. I'm sorry that I was so silly at the Chalet, I just felt so frustrated sometimes. Now I'm moving somewhere else I'm going to really try.'
'I'm sure you will Margot, you will make us all very proud.' Madge smiled and looked to Jo,
'I'd better head back to my happy home Jo, if you want anything you know where to find me. Margot I'll see you soon.' Madge bent and bestowed a kiss on Margot's curls whilst Jo nodded and stood up to see her sister out.
'I can see myself out!' Madge called over her shoulder and Jo sank back into her chair, she had never felt this awkward with any of her girls…
'Mamma, do you mind me moving school?' Asked Margot, 'I thought you might be upset about it earlier but I just want to be different.'
'Of course I don't mind, Margot. It's your decision, come and sit by me. Do you think that you would prefer to stay in Switzerland? Your language skills are certainly good enough and you could come home every day or at least every weekend. Alternatively we could send you to England with the boys…it's really up to you sweetheart.'
Margot smiled and snuggled up to her mother, convinced that she must have misunderstood earlier.
'I don't know, do you want me to call Papa?'
'Yes do that, I'll ask Anna to bring us in some kaffe und kuchen and we'll discuss it properly.' Jo smiled at Margot who ran excitedly upstairs then wearily went into the kitchen to give Anna her request

#257:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 7:59 pm

Agreed, Joey didn't really have much choice, but she has made Margot feel happier, so she deserves credit for that.
She still doesn't really want to let go though does she? 'Do you want to stay in Switzerland so you can come home for the weekend?'

#258:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:18 pm

Will Jo ever really see Margot's POV? She is so fixed on the CS as the only place for her girls, that she can't see the value of letting Margot be an individual in another school.

Can you imagine what the school would think of that? After all, it might be a school that's never heard of Josephine M Bettany!

#261:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Tue Mar 23, 2004 7:47 pm

I know it's not much, but it's better than nothing!

A few minutes later the Maynards were settled round the pretty coffee table, Margot was curled up on one end of the sofa reading a prospectus about a school in France, Jo was tending to concentrate on those closer to home whilst Jack was looking at those in England,
'There are several good day schools round here.' Jo commented, 'You might like that Margot, it would give us a chance to spend more time with you.'
Margot looked up but Jack interrupted, 'Are you sure you want that Margot?, it might be hard for you being around the others. Especially as they're boarding so close by.'
'I think I want to board.' Said Margot firmly
'Well what about elsewhere in Switzerland? At least then you could come home fairly regularly.'
'But Mamma, no one else would be going home every month, they don't at the Chalet.'
Jo had to concede that Margot was right, after all they didn't expect their girls to go home at every chance, still if the family lived close by….
'I think England's best Margot.' Concluded Jack, 'There are several excellent boarding schools and you could travel with the boys.'
Margot nodded, 'England then…is that fine with you Mamma?'
'Yes…Margot, do as you wish.'
Margot seemed happy with this reply but in Jack's mind Jo still wasn't being entirely helpful. He knew that she wanted to choose a local school, partly so that she would be more well known in the surrounding villages for having an intelligent daughter. However he also knew that this situation would create difficulties with Margot still being so close to the Chalet and didn't feel that she was mature enough to cope. Complete separation would ensure that the girls could have holiday chats about their schools and concentrate during the term.

Looking forward to more when you are available.

#265:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 5:01 pm

Does the 'Do as you wish' really mean that Jo is going to interfere and put all sorts of obstacles in Margot's way, and then say it was done for Margot's sake?

#266:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 7:46 pm

Margot began flicking through more of the prospectuses, Jo looked contemplative whilst Jack seriously studied one on a school near the New Forest. Eventually Margot looked up,
'When can I tell Len and Con….and Emerence! She's invited herself over for the holidays.' Margot concluded with dismay in her voice.
'I invited her Margot.' Jo said, 'Though I must say that I'm pleased to hear you're not intending on maintaining that friendship.'
Margot blushed, 'I didn't say that Mamma, it's just that when Len said I could invite her, she was there and accepted straight away. I didn't feel I had a lot of choice…she always tags round after me.'
This time it was Jo's turn to look embarrassed, 'Sorry Margot, of course if you want to spend time with Emerence over the holidays then that is perfectly fine.'
Margot looked down, 'I don't, but I've invited her now and that's that.'
Jo frowned, she couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for her rush to have as many people over as possible, it seemed that what most of them needed was family time.
'Don't worry Margot, I'll go and telephone the Hopes now, they may want Emerence with them after all.'
'Thank you Mamma,' Margot's eyes shone. 'It's going to be strange having everyone here, when I go away we'll never have any time on our own like this again.'
'Of course we will.' Said Jack decisively, 'We'll come over to England to see you Margot and I'm sure there will be weekends when the others are at school.'
Margot smiled, somewhat relieved to have got that off her chest. 'Have you fund anywhere yet Papa?'
Jack looked down at the prospectus on his lap and suddenly realised that the burden of choosing a school was down to him.
'I think I've got to the stage where I can make a few telephone calls' he said after a pause, 'Do you want me and Mamma to choose a few Margot, and help you decide?'
Margot nodded, 'As long as it's not somewhere….I don't know.'
'Don't worry you can have the final say, and if you don't like any just tell me.'
Margot nodded again, 'Papa would it be alright for me to have a rest before tea, I'm really tired.'
'Of course' Jack remembered what a traumatic day it had been for his daughter and was relieved that she felt confident enough to leave the decisions up to him and Jo.

#267:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 9:59 pm

Thank you for the latest post - surprised Margot didn't want Emerence.

*Wonder if Joey is going to suggest the CS at Carnbach!. Wonder why they should visit Margot in England when they never visited the boys!*

#268:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 10:12 pm

It would seem a natural thing for Joey to suggest Carnbach, I think. But I'm not sure that would be particularly good for Margot.

#269:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Fri Mar 26, 2004 2:21 pm

It woudn't, it would be a disaster for her. Why doesn't Jo want Emerence?

#270:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Fri Mar 26, 2004 5:41 pm

With his daughter safely despatched upstairs, Jack set to think about the days events while Jo completed her call to Emerence's parents then returned to the lounge,
'Has Margot gone up?'
'Yes…She looked tired out, what did the Hopes say?'
'Oh, they're happy to have Emerence, of course.'
'Are you surprised Margot didn't want her to stay? It seems harsh on Emerence.'
'I suppose, but Jack, like you said Margot is tired. I think she wants to do as little explaining as possible, then make a fresh start. What did she say about schools?'
'She's leaving it up to us, she wants a school in England and I agree with her, but don't suggest the English branch Jo, you know that Margot would hate it.'
Jo frowned but had to concede that point, still it was a pity, if Margot had gone to the English branch she could have been head girl there, and done well. Still, Jo didn't feel quite up to arguing with Jack on that point.
'Where were you thinking?'
'This school near the New Forest looks interesting, it seems academic. They set a test for entry so I should phone them to see if they have spaces.'
'Mmmm…the phone's free now. Do you think I could call Hilda once you've finished?'
'Not yet, I told Margot I wouldn't call her until Monday morning. See if you can find any other good places Jo.'

This will be your last for a week as I'm going on a geography field trip to the Lake District! Enjoy!

Jo gave an inward groan but eventually decided to look through the pile that Jack had 'shortlisted'. They did all look very academic, Jo knew that Margot was intelligent but these places not only needed that but hard work and thought, still it could be good for Margot. Looking through the prospectuses Jo could also see that whilst some schools prided themselves on subjects such as history and english, others were more scientific, emphasising their excellent provision of science laboratories and their perfect results in mathematics. Jo knew that she herself would hate a school that valued maths so highly but wondered what line Margot would take. To be honest, it didn't really matter she thought, after all Len was bound to follow her in languages for she was a natural linguist and Con was bound to be a writer. However Jo had still thought that all the girls would follow her.

At this point Jack returned looking positive, the school did have places and seemed interested in Margot. They would send the Maynards some more detailed information and if all went to plan Margot would be able to start after the Christmas holidays. Jo took the prospectus that Jack handed her, after a few moments looking at 'Red Gables School' Jo could tell that it was one of those sciency places.

However when she raised these concerns to Jack he replied that it was well rounded and that he saw Margot as a good all rounder.

Chapter 10

Once Miss Wells had finished teaching the girls went to collect their books to start prep. They had not been set a lot of work due to the disruptions of the play but the exams were next week and there were several of them working for removes. This raised the standards considerably and even those who had not been told that they were on the potential list intended to put in a good bit of work to ensure that they gave a good showing. Clem, the prefect on duty was relieved by these efforts especially as after the turbulence of the morning as she had been expecting trouble. However when half way through Betsy Lucy came in to offer to relieve her, Clem was able to motion that she was happy to stay.

In the staff room there were similar comments, Miss Wells had been impressed by the standard of their work and Frau Griffiths gave a pleasing report on the German essays she was marking,

'I thought I was lucky to have Len in my group for her language is excellent but Ali's is even better. I hardly ever have to correct her work, even her grammar is excellent. Fiona is working solidly and has mastered the skills that I would expect of her. It is an excellent form.'

'Who would you want for our three removes?' asked Miss Edwards shrewdly,

'Ali, Len and Fiona for me.' Replied Frau Griffiths. 'Although all those on the list would be able to cope in the form above. What about you?'

'Ali, Con and Fiona. Though for me it depends a lot more on the exam results, Con has the potential to do well though I'm half inclined to recommend Sophia, after all she is a year older.'

'There is that.' Supplemented Miss Wells, 'However Con and Ali would certainly benefit from being in an upper form. Fiona is nearing that stage too, although she makes an excellent form captain. What about you Biddy?'

'Ali' responded Biddy, 'then Fiona, then it could be any of the other four. Veronique has a beautiful style, although sometimes she misunderstands a question. Len and Sophia are both solid, Sophia has the benefit in that she is slightly older but Len is more talented linguistically and can sometimes understand others better.'

'And Con?'

'Either amazing or hopeless. To be honest I think it depends how much she's concentrating, she has improved enormously since half term though and I think that she would benefit from the challenge of a higher form.'
Mlle Berne nodded also,

'It is Ali, Len and Veronique for me, although Fiona is not far behind. We will have trouble deciding!'

'What's this?' Nell Wilson collapsed into a chair.

'We were discussing the merits of lower IV A, they seem to be working hard for their removes. Who do you think should go up?' asked Miss Edwards.

'Well Ali has certainly covered the ground quickly and she works hard, other than her I think Fiona and Sophia.'

The others nodded, it was as they had thought. Ali was bound to go up as was Fiona, however it was divided amongst the others. That result, they would leave to the exams to tell them.

#281:  Author: ToriaLocation: London PostPosted: Mon Apr 19, 2004 9:13 pm

The girls awoke next morning with the now normal prospect of an all day play rehearsal. This was to be more special than the others as it was to be the dress rehearsal. This did not as they had been informed by Miss Wilson mean that it was the last rehearsal, just that they would need time to make any changes but it did mean that everyone needed to be word perfect. Clem was therefore faced with the unenviable job of trying to get her over excited dorm into some kind of order and preventing any kind of mishap. Lesley Malcolm, who was normally helpful seemed to be completely lacking in any kind of focus and succeeded in having to make her bed no less than three times until it passed Clem's inspection. It was an exasperated Clem that led the dorm down to breakfast to hear the morning's announcements. However upon reaching the bottom of the stairs Lesley cried out once more,
'Oh no! Clem, I've forgotten my wristwatch may I go back up to the dorm to get it?'
'You seem to have forgotten your brains when you woke up this morning.' Remarked Clem dryly, 'I only hope that you remember your words better.'
Miss Dene suppressed a smile at Clem's words but responded calmly.
'You have time Lesley as Fruhstuck will be a little later this morning. However I suggest that given your state of mind that you take someone with you to ensure that you don't forget what you came up for in the first place. Ali would you go with Lesley?'
Ali nodded, making little effort to suppress her own grins at Lesley's state of confusion. Meanwhile Miss Dene ushered the others along to the big hall,
'Miss Annersley has something important to announce before Fruhstuck' she explained.
'Good morning girls' Said Miss Annersley as they entered. 'I will not waste time, because I do not have long. Mr Hatherthwaite will be coming to watch our dress rehearsal this afternoon so I expect your best performance. He will be able to give us a valuable insight into how the play should be performed. Geraldine is unaware of his coming and Mr Hatherthwaite would like to keep it that way. He wants to surprise Ali at the end of the rehearsal. I have told you now so that you will be careful not to gossip among yourselves if you see him around during the day. Lesley Malcolm has been asked to keep an eye on things. Now, enjoy the day!'
A few moments later Ali and Lesley entered, Ali had had to wait a full five minutes while Lesley searched her cubicle only to hear Lesley exclaim,
'Gosh, it's on my wrist already! Just the wrong one. I say Ali I am a fool, sorry to have kept you like this.'
'No probs' Ali grinned, 'Though do pull yourself together a bit Les, we've got the rehearsal later on remember.'
'I know, I think it's that that’s driving me nuts.' Replied Lesley, 'We'd best get down if we want anything to eat.'
As the girls entered the hall they noticed an exciting state of chatter,
'Hello you two late comers!' Remarked Mary Lou jovially as they settled with the rest of the dorm. 'You two have missed the head's pep talk on doing your best in the dress, still I'm sure you will anyway. At least I'm not at all sure that Lesley will but I'm sure that you will Ali.'
'I'm inclined to be insulted by that comment Mary Lou.' Replied Lesley and the two soon passed into a lively exchange much to the relief of the rest of the table as it provided them with a vent for their helpless giggles.

I've just read this right from the very beginning - there goes yet another early night. I loved the insights into Len & watching her develop. I think it's great for Margot to go to a different school - my twins were always in separate classes at primary school & now go to completely different high school. Each of them is at a school that is suited to them and they have both really benefitted from this.

Here's a tad more! I was staying near Ambleside in the Lakes, it was sunny the whole time! Well, it rained a bit on one occasion but not enough to put us off anything we wanted to do.

Thus the meal was finished with Ali left in the dark about her father's presence. As the girls were dismissed to the splasheries those who had to elected to help behind scenes dashed about making sure that everything was ready. As it was to be a full costume rehearsal it was imperative that everyone was in their allocated room to be visited by the make up crew and to be called to go on stage. Those doing the lighting were also nervous, once on stage the girls would be able to see very little of the audience and the skill had been in getting a professional set of follow spots donated to the school and learning how to use them.
Ali and Con finished quickly. Con had been allocated a small room near to the main stage by virtue of her major role and had elected to share her privilege with Ali. In the room they found their costumes neatly laid out. Ali's was a fairly simple dress whereas Con's was aimed to represent a ragged costume whilst maintaining a veneer of beauty. This had been achieved exceedingly well and the girls gasped in awe. They knew that Veronique, by virtue of her excellent needlework had had a hand in the costume but she for her part had said very little and Con had been expecting something much more simple.
The girls changed quickly and it didn't seem long before Con received her call to go on stage. The girls had put on each others make up, neither of them needed a great deal and it had been decided that that would be simpler. Con grinned at Ali and then headed for the stage. The scene would start with herself on stage accompanied by Verity Ann singing her solo. As Con took her position on stage the two gave a weak smile at each other before the curtain went up. As it did so Con almost gasped with shock for the lighting had done its job and the audience was completely invisible. However she rapidly pulled herself together and slipped into her role.

Meanwhile, Ali sat in the room feeling a little lonely. She had some prep to do with her but normally she had the company of Len, Veronique or any other of lower IV who chose to drop in. This of course caused immense trouble for the 'callers' and in the dress it simply wasn't possible. Still, thought Ali it was strange. In Scotland she had become accustomed to being content with her own company but now she longed for companionship. However all things considered Ali was glad she had moved, she missed her friends of course but the village school had spanned a large age range and given the remoteness of the castle, visiting was often impossible. In a way Ali wished that she was going home for Christmas, she hadn't even been here for a full half term yet though and at least staying with the Maynards would give her a better insight into the school.
Ali grinned to herself as she remembered her first arrival in Switzerland with Len and Mrs Maynard, or Jo. In truth Ali was a little worried about this, she wasn't sure how much Jo had liked her. Jolting herself back to reality Ali looked down at the maths questions that had been set. She seemed to have managed to do a couple more questions whilst she had been daydreaming and she only had one more to do.
'Ali? You're on in five minutes.' Amanda Hilton's quiet voice came into the room. Ali looked up,
'Amanda! Did you say I'm on?'
'Yes, in five minutes' Amanda smiled, she was in the lower sixth and being more mathematically inclined had decided to help behind scenes rather than act this year. Amanda got on well with Ali as she had been asked by Miss Edwards to help run the Problem Solving Club. Ali glanced in the mirror then grinned at Amanda,
'Thanks Amanda, I seemed to have slipped back into daydreaming…I used to do it all the time in Scotland. But I haven't so much while I'm here.'
'I'm not surprised.' Replied Amanda, 'I can't see Miss Wilson or Miss Edwards or any one else supporting that kind of attitude.'
'I suppose not.' Ali blushed, 'But I did read somewhere that daydreaming is supposed to be good for you.'
'Well, you can read anything if you look in the right place.' Amanda conceded.

Little time was left for chatter for Ali and Amanda soon found themselves at the wings, Amanda mouthed a good luck to Ali and then left her.
Ali brushed her hair back and closed her eyes, slipping effortlessly into her character as she did so before walking on to the stage. Mr Hatherthwaite, from the darkened audience watched his daughter with tears forming in his eyes. He knew then that he had made the right decision in sending Ali away. He wondered briefly if Ellen Charlotte would also have been happy here, then dismissed the thought and concentrated once more on the play.
Ali stepped off the stage with a sense of relief, the scene had gone well enough and she would not be needed again until the last scene. Ali hesitated then headed off for the dressing room containing Len and Veronique, she wanted to talk to them, and for once she didn't care about being in her room for calls.
Ali was welcomed by those in the dressing room, and they soon settled down to chattering about the play and school in general. In fact Ali became so absorbed in talking that all thoughts of 'calls' slipped from the girls' excited minds. The last scene involved most of the girls and it would be almost impossible to miss going on.
It fell to Amanda Hilton, who having been to Ali's dressing room and discovered her absence decided to dash along to the lower IV A room and see if she was there. Opening the door, she was met with a scene that could only be described as chaotic. There was water all over the floor and also over many of the girls. It was Ali who looked up first,
'Amanda, I'm sorry, I forgot the time.'
'Have you seen your costume?'
Ali looked down and paled rapidly, as did the others in the ensuing silence. It was Len who eventually broke the silence,
'How long do we have Amanda?'
'Five minutes' replied Amanda grimly, 'I suggest that you leave this mess until afterwards, though no doubt by then you will be explaining yourselves to the head. You had better go on as you are, if you keep to the back you won't be seen, Ali you must quickly swap into Catherine's dress and go on like that. Come on the rest of you!'
The others hurried out Ali murmuring her thanks to Catherine who had managed to avoid getting soaked before running to join the others.
Ali delivered her closing lines and managed to quell any querying looks at her change of costume before taking to the stage once again for the finale. It was at this point that the lights came up to reveal a smiling Mr Hatherthwaite,
'Papa!' Cried Ali in excitement and then laughed as she hurried off the stage to take her place in her father's arms. Mr Hatherthwaite said only a few words to the cast before they were dismissed by Miss Wilson to the changing rooms. Ali too scampered off, with the instructions to be 'extra quick'. Meanwhile Amanda Hilton sought out Miss Wilson to explain some of what had gone on behind scenes.
Miss Wilson nodded then smiled at Amanda and replied that they could have had worse,
'You've done well Amanda, I'll go along there now and reprimand them for their behaviour but on the whole I'm happy with the rehearsal.'
The arrival of Miss Wilson did indeed cause consternation amongst lower IV. Ali saw her in the corridor and dashed out to join the others in the room.

Wel, it's abit more...It's all I could fit in around my revision schedule!

Ali's entrance aroused a frown from Len, she knew that Ali was supposed to be spending the time with her father. However Miss Wilson also saw to this and responded with a quick,
'Whatever your involvement, Geraldine, I am not concerned at the moment. I am sure that the others are more than capable of giving me an account of events and they will inform you later of my response. Needless to say that you should not have been in this dressing room and I can only hope that your behaviour will be considerably better on the night. You may go to the study, where your father will see you.'
'Thank you Miss Wilson' mumbled Ali as she slipped out, she felt guilty about her part in events and wished that she was able to explain that it had been her fault to Miss Wilson.
'Ali!' Mr Hatherthwaite hugged his daughter tightly, 'Sweetheart I've missed you. How's school?'
'I'm managing' replied Ali but she was smiling, 'I love it Papa, I've made so many friends…but I miss you and Mamma and Mrs Mills, and I don't have a chance to do my own thing.'
'But you're still writing?'
'Of course, Con and I are writing a joint story in English, there's a competition, we're going to finish it over the holidays. What are you and Mamma doing?'
'Touring, I need some more inspiration and I've got to please the publishers over the Christmas period.'
Ali nodded, it seemed strange talking to Papa again…
'So how are you coping with the lessons? I know that I haven't covered much with you, especially in science. I hope that they didn't find you too lacking.'
'I'm fine' Ali replied, 'Some things are a little odd but Con has explained them all to me and the sixth form will always help us out, the head girl, Julie Lucy is lovely. Oh and Miss O'Ryan, my form mistress and history teacher has said that Con and I may get removes…though I doubt I will after today.'
'What do you mean?' asked Mr Hatherthwaite, pleased with how his daughter was coping. He had heard nothing but good responses from her teachers but he was intrigued by this.
'Well…we had a sort of water fight during the rehearsal, I was in the wrong room and missed my call and now the others are getting in trouble.'
'Ali…When you say a 'sort of' water fight you don't mean…'
Ali nodded, blushing. However Mr Hatherthwaite merely smiled and laughed. 'I don't think I ever told you Ali but that incident was based on an event in my own youth, in circumstances very similar to this…an amateur drama production at Oxford. To think that you've re-enacted it here!'
'Well, it wasn't on purpose…I tried to tell Miss Wilson but she wouldn't listen…she wanted the others to explain.'
'It sounds like I had better let you go, I'm reading out improvements for the play after lunch, then I'll see if I can arrange for you and …Con? To come back to the hotel for the rest of the afternoon and evening.'
'Thank you Papa' Ali smiled gratefully and then slipped off to join the others.

I've managed to write a bit more today...so here it is!

Ali emerged back on the scene to find Len attempting to explain,
'We were seeing if we could throw the water across the room and get it all into the bucket on the other side. The other team had to try and stop the water getting there. The team with the most water in the bucket would be the winners.'
'I see' said Miss Wilson, not seeing at all but realising that any further explanation would only serve to confuse matters further. 'Well I don't know what possessed you all. You can miss the dancing after dinner tonight and sort out this room.'
'Yes Miss Wilson.' Replied Fiona, feeling that it was about time that she as form captain, took her turn to explain…'I'm sorry it got so out of hand, we won't do it again…'
'Very well. Now you had all best get ready for lunch. Mr Hatherthwaite will be reading out his ideas for improvements afterwards. Was the whole form involved in this Fiona?'
'All except Con Miss Wilson.'
'I'll help tidy up though Miss Wilson' put in Con anxiously, 'I would have been involved if I hadn't been on stage and…'
'I'll leave you to it girls, Con if you want to miss dancing then you are welcome to do so. However I believe that Mr Hatherthwaite intended to invite yourself and Geraldine back to the hotel for the evening so I'm sure that neither of you will want to stay.'
'You needn't Ali' put in Fiona quickly; 'We'll manage fine without you and Con.'
Ali smiled her thanks at Fiona and was about to refuse when she changed her mind, if it were Fiona's parents she would want her to go.
'Thank you Fiona. I really appreciate that.' She said simply.
The girls enjoyed a pleasant lunch then settled in silence in the big hall. Mr Hatherthwaite made a pleasing critic. He said that he had much enjoyed the play then went through each scene carefully, being sure to comment on each individual's actions.
At the end of the talk Ali and Con found themselves whisked back to the hotel,
'Mamma' Cried Ali and ran into her mother's arms. Con also received a shock for her mother was also there, accompanied by a smiling Margot. Jo had decided to spend the morning with Mrs Hatherthwaite, seeing as her husband would be at the school.
'Hello Mamma, hello Margot.' Con responded, not altogether sure whether she was pleased or not. Margot looked very well though,
'We're looking forward to having you back on Monday' said Con to her sister. Margot's face suddenly shadowed,
'I'm not coming back…I'm moving schools. Papa said I could and I'm going to board in England.'
'Leave the Chalet!' Con looked shocked, 'But you can't Margot, it's your life!'
'Well I'd have to leave sometime.' Margot said philosophically, 'I wasn't happy there Con. I don't fit the mould like you and Len. I want to go somewhere else and be myself.'
Con nodded, beginning to understand. After all she and Len had gone through similar problems.
'Will that make you happy?'
'It already is, I've looked at some of the prospectuses with Papa. I know it's the right thing to do.'
'Then I'm happy for you too…but I'll miss you. You must write Margot, we'll still be triplets after all!'
Margot's smile broadened. She had feared that Con would not take the news well,
'Con? Will you tell Len for me? But don't let the others know, Papa's going to phone Miss Annersley on Monday.'

Again sorry this is moving along so slowly....still approaching the end! Hope to be able to write more after this week when my exams are (mostly) over!

It was at this moment that Ali chose to join the pair,
'Hi Margot! Are you staying for the afternoon too?'
'No…I think we're going back home soon.'
'Well, you haven't met my Papa yet have you? You must see him before you go.'
Margot smiled and encouraged by Ali went to be introduced. Fortunately for Margot Ali abstained from mentioning anything of Margot's return to the school and Jo and Margot retired with the Hatherthwaites none the wiser. Con had been rather thrown off guard for she had honestly not expected her sister to leave. Fortunately she had plenty of time to mull things over for the Hatherthwaites were all having a 'catch up' session. Normally Con would have listened intrigued but at the moment she just needed to think. She would have to tell Len as soon as possible then they would be able to mention it to Ali and Veronique together. Con had no qualms about telling the two. After all they were close as a foursome and it wouldn't be fair to keep secrets.
'What do you think Con?' Ali turned to her friend.
'Pardon?' Replied a horrified Con; she hadn't had a clue what had been said, 'Sorry, I was thinking.' She responded after an initial pause.
The family laughed and shrugged the event off,
'Happens to the best of us' Replied Mr Hatherthwaite launching into a description of an occasion when at an important conference he had been thinking about his latest novel and someone had asked him a question. He had of course had no idea of what had been asked.
'What did you do?' Asked Con spellbound.
'Oh, I just thought for a few moments then asked them to repeat the question. No one was any the wiser. It was a slightly different situation of course but as I say it happens to us all.'
'We were just discussing when we wanted to eat.' Said Ali quickly before her father could relate any more experiences. They were great fun at dinners but with Con here it seemed vaguely embarrassing.
The rest of the evening passed without mishap and the weary pair arrived back at school just in time to be packed off to bed by matron. It was a disappointment for Con who had hoped to speak to Len but she conceded that that would just have to wait until the morning and determined to seek Len out first thing.
