OK, I don't know if now is good time to start a drabble-don't expect it to be long or updated often, and it's got a definate ending. Well, here goes...

The diary of Dr J Russell

Dear Diary
Well, I'm off, I'm leaving my old life in England and all its dismal memories behind.
I was talking to Dr Lowe last night and he agrees that if I can get this little project of mine up and running it should work quite well.
So with this final recomendation I'm off!
Lowe gave me several places to try but the one that seems thje most attractive is a place called the Tiernsee in Austria.
Well, that's the end of this entry and I can pack my diary away. Well, this is going to be my last entry in england for quite a while!
Cheerio!
Jem

hmm.

I love the concept, but I'd quite like to see the opening expanded, with Jem taking notes, explaining why he didn't choose this place or that place, perhaps some obstructions? How did he meet Maynard? I can see him starting the journal as a purely technical exercise to keep notes on patients seen, and perhaps some more colour coming in as he gets more emotionally involved with the place and the people.

Dear diary,
well here I am in Paris. It seems a long time since I was last here with the Lowes. I remember going with Tim and Flora to the Eiffel tower. That was one holiday I will never forget. Well, I've no time this visit for sightseeing. I'm back on the train in two hours.
Cheerio!

Well, I know this is double posting, but as I have a little bit of spare time. I'll do another entry.

Dear Diary,
Well, Innsbruck station AT LAST! Found the Europe and my room, and I'm off to the first place in the morning. The Tiernsee. Sounds a wonderful place and I can't wait to see it.
I've been writing letters all the way here. I think I'm FINALLY up to date here.
Nearly got my pocket picked at the station, but caught the thief before he got away.
Anyway, time for dinner, of mittagessan as it's known here.
Auf wiedershen!

#21:  Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Fri May 07, 2004 12:55 pm

Dear Diary,
Well a really unsettling day. I found out that I can't use the place I was interested in at the Achensee, so that cuts down my options. Then on the way to the Tiernsee the most terrifying and thrilling event happened.
I had just relaxed with a novel, The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie, quite good, (but I think I'll have to buy a new copy now, mine got destroyed) when there was an almighty distrubance, quite terrifying and the Carriage fell sideways. Well I got out alright and went to help, as being a doctor I SHOULD know how to deal with injuries. Well as I started to help I noticed a little scene going on nearby, a girl was pulling a fat german from the carriage, while three others were nearby. Well as I watched this girl, you wouldn't believe she had so much strength! Well she pulled this woman from the train. What effort. Well as I came forward to help, she fainted. I don't blame her. Well, I calmed down the fat woman and with the help of the three kids got this Girl, a Miss Bettany to one side. I've never seen such plucky kids, the youngest, a girl of about 12 was SO like Flora at that age, then there were two older girls, one seemed amazingly sad. Well once I had made sure they were well I went to a hotel room. I think I'm going to stay in this village for a few days, there's quite a few wounded. Well I found out Miss Bettany runs a girls school at the Tiernsee. Well I promised I'd call round one day and left them to travel home. I think I will see them when I'm there. Miss Bettany really impressed me, she's got some pluck!
Cheerio!

Thanks edith - I'd completely not realised till now that Juliet would be in double shock, this coming on top of the news about her parents - amazing how it takes a fresh view to point out the blindingly obvious (ok I'm just thick, maybe it's having read this as a young child, I still see it from that pov)

Dear Diary,
Well, here i am at the Tiernsee. It turns out that Miss Bettany and co were in Innsbruck for the day so I wandered around without them. Well I've been rto the shelf that was suggested and I think it's a definite probable. Its a georgeous place and not TOO out of the way. The only problem is Austrian politics, the country's not TOO strong. Well, it's a pity this is only a whistle-stop tour but I got a cable from England.
Flora's worse.
The Lowes have been a real family, so I'm going back for a bit. Then its off to the French Alps for a look at a little place there.
Cheerio! Jem.

Dear Diary,
Well I'm back in Austria.
Flora died a week after I arrived and I felt I couldn't stay here much longer. Well Dr Lowe agreed that the Tiernsee was the best place and so I'm back here to arrange for building work to start.
Met a young doctor on the train here. Jack Maynard. He hasn't graduated long but is specialising in TB. Turns out his sister is a mistress at Miss Bettany's school. he asked if there would be any jobs going at the San. Well I've got his card and I think that I might give him a call when the time comes. He seems a decent sort of chap.
Well, I'm off to the Ice Carnival this evening. It sounds like a good sort of affair and I could do with cheering up.
Bye!

Dear diary,
a strange and very mixed evening.
I met the Bettanys again, but in strange circumstances-I nearly managed to cut the younger Miss Bettany-Joey's fingers off.
Well I went to the ice carnival as I planned. A marvellous place but very eerie with the Tzigane music and the bonfires.
Well, I hadn't been skating for a bit, so it took me a while to get used to the ice. I can't believe how easy it gets with a bit of practice.
Well I soon got my confidence back and I was racing round the lake like I used to when I took Flora skating.
Well, I turned a corner rather blindly, and before I knew it a girl had fallen across my path. I honestly thought I was going to hit her, and so did the whole little lot of them for they screamed. Well I dived, and miraculously managed to miss her, but fell heavily on top of her. Ouch! I'm still bruised!
Well the girl had fainted and so I had to try and calm down one of the other three to find out whyere the group was supposed to be.
Well it turned out that they were SUPPOSED to be in bed at the Chalet school. The name seemed familiar but i didn't make the connection-then.
Well as the girl hadn't revived and the others were in no state to wander about by themselves I picked the girl up and took the others back to their school.
Well we got to the gate only for it to be opened by Miss Bettany. The woman from the train. Well, obviously I was shocked and it took alot of effort to remain proffessional.
Needless to say Miss Bettany was angry, who wouldn't be when four pupils, including your own sister break bounds, but she seemed more terrified than anything else when she saw Joey.
Poor kid! I could have throttled Miss Joey there and then when I saw all the trouble she'd caused. Well I managed to reassure Miss Bettany that everything would be fine and that Jo was only bruised.
£Well, as soon as I'd carried Jo into the study she woke up and amazingly she remembered me from the summer!
Well Jo and the others were sent to bed and I was left with Miss Bettany. We chatted for a bit and I promised I'd return the next day and keep an eye on Jo.
Well, by that time it was the small hours of the morning, so I crawled back to the hotel, only to find I'd been locked out.
It took five solid minutes knoecking at the door to be let in, and Herr Braun was NOT happy until he found out where I'd been. It seems the Bettanys are a favourite round here and I can see why, even if Jo is a bit of a scamp!

Goodnight!

Whew! thats a long post for me! I'm tired now! ZZZZ

Well I've 5 mins now

Dear Diary,
Been to see the Bettanys, Jo seems better and is clamouring for books, so I, in a moment of madness lent her the Elsie books I'd brought years back. I had to spin a yarn about them belonging to an aunt though! Its awkward saying that you and your best friend enjoyed laughing at them!
Well Miss Bettany, Madge rather and I had a good chat about the san. She seems interested, and its a good draw to both san and school having the other there. Well IU think I'm getting to like her an awful lot.
I'd better go now. The architects arrived.
Jem

#52:  Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Tue May 18, 2004 3:11 pm

Dear diary,
went to the school again today to talk to Madge and check on Joey. That young madam has definately punished herself, she seems quite an active young thing. Well, as I waited for Madge to finish teaching I flicked through the school magasine. Well, I've seen a few of those in my time first from my school, and then from the ones Flora insisted on sending me! This one was different from anything I've ever seen before! Oh, it was good, make no mistake but I suppose its the foreign influence because it was all so well written, strangely enough it was the sports page that made me laugh the most. The captain, Grizel Cochrane tried to be neat and polite but she'd gone to the extreme, she had managed to make CRICKET! sound so dreadfully polite and old-maidish! It was a laugh!
Well anyway, I turned to the storys page and came across a real gem! The Wooden bowl of Hans Sneeman. I was reading it when Madge came in. It turns out that this was one of Miss Jo's and as we walked by the lake I remembered about this competition I had heard of in England for young authors. Well between us we decided to send off the story and see how it would do, somehow we decided to keep it a secret from Joey, partly not to excite her, and partly not to disapoint her if nothing happened, especially as these competitions sometimes have rather dubious judges.
Got to go! I've promised to talk to a local young doctor about working at the san.
Cheerio!

Oh well back to the diary-I am NOT doing a ton of revision on top of the full day I've just had including TRIPLE maths-2 during the day and 1 after school. glad people are reading this in their revision breaks! It makes me feel kind of guilty though that I'm feeling too tired to at the mo!

Dear diary,
popped in to see Madge again today.
She was reading something when I arrived and laughing fit to burst! Well, it turns out Jo has been writing an Elsie book of her own. It is a hoot! Well, halfway through who arrives but Joey herself, who flies at us for reading it. Well, after a complete toungue lashing I had to make the excuse for both of us, bnot that we needed any excuse. It was well written-for a 13 yr old!
Well, the san's well on its way now. You can see the shape of all the buildings and its well on schedule!
Cheerio!

OUCH!
Well I had maths AGAIN after school. If they had listened when I said it was getting a bit close to the exam for not having started the last book...

Dear diary,
I don't know what I feel like at the moment. My minds a complete whirl. I was walking with Madge by the lake this evening and I told her I had to go to Innsbruk for a few days, she seemed, well disapointed and I told her to buck up and was there anything she wanted from the city. Well she asked for a few books she needed, and in a fit of madness I said that Prince Charming would deliver and I, I kissed her. Jokingly at first but then I got carried away...
Oh why didn't I think! I shouldn't have kissed her. I, I can't describe how I feel. Ive got to go to Innsbruk but...
Oh I really hope I haven't upset her! She sort of went inside hurriedly without saying goodnight.
I just want to be at the school talking to her, appologising but I've got to go...

Dear diary,
The school's alright thank goodness, but Madge seemed exhausted when I saw her. I finally managed to drag her away from the school for a bit and took her up to the san.
Well, I don't know how exactly but halfway through she burst into tears. Poor girl! She'd had tocope with so much the last few days and had to let it all out.
I comforted her, and we spent the rest of the time talking, I said I'd pop down and help with the clearing up a bit. The builders are all busy because of the flood at the moment.
Well Madge went back to school and I tidied up a few things before I left.
I got down to the lake path and you wouldn't believe what I saw!
Miss Durrant and Madge were pulling Joey out of the lajke! That idiot child!!! Turns out she had jumped over the ditch, and then when she jumped back over she managed somehow to leap the path as well and land in the lake!
Well I sent her off to bed, and by the look of it that was where Madge needed to be as well.
I could ring Miss Josephine Bettany's neck sometimes!
Jem

Dear Diary,
That Jo!
I arrived at the school to see Madge briefly and would you believe me, that little madam instead of being in be3d where she belonged is outside! Well I asked why she was out and forgetting what she was like asked if she was sickening for something. Well, you wouldn't believe what that young madam said. "Like thrush?"
I couold have died, I don't know how and where she got that from, I was half tempted to explain what thrush was, but I can't imagine Madghe being amazingly happy if I did. Well, she was alright, never healthier. Well I had something to give her and I wasn't going to give it her then, so I said I'd see her when I saw Madge at 10.
Remember I sent that story of Joeys in to that competition, well a letter arrived in the post from the publishers. Well I opened it with Madge and it turns out Jo won 2nd prize. I showed the letter to Madge first and she was bucked!
Then Miss Jo arrived. I'bve never seen anyone happier.
You can't help liking that scaramouche sometimes!
Cheerio!

Hmm, obviously there's a kind of thrush I don't know about. It was quite common in my day (feeling very old and decrepit today) for mothers to talk about babies with thrush, a fungal infection in the mouth as far as I know. Nor is it limited to babies; not uncommon, especially when immune system is depressed. My mother spent lots of time rinsing mouth with nystatin (antifungal) in the aftermath of chemo.

The one most people in this country think of when you mention thrush (at least I *think* they do - women at least) is vaginal thrush -same thing and not nice at all.

Theres a lot of adverts on the telly at the moment for the new pill you can take (which is a lot better than the old pessaries) and some cream to use in the meantime till the pill starts working.

If I'm on antibiotics I almost live on live yoghurt, but often still get both types Sad

Aha! Never heard that called thrush before, only "yeast infection." (or a long fancy term I forget, named for Candida, the kind of yeast that does the infecting, as opposed to Saccharomyces baking/brewing yeast)

Dear diary,
I've decided to ask her tonight.
We're going out for a walk by the lake once those little scaramouches are out of the way. SHe's off to England on a guider's training camp soon and I want to ask her before then. I found the ring in a small jewellers in Innsbruk, its a saphire as blue as the lake. I've got to dash now. I want to get ready.
Cheerio!
Jem

Dear Diary,
SHE SAID YES!
I am so exstatic!
I waited until we reached the dripping rock and stopped to admire the view.
I asked her and she was silent for a moment. That really scared me. I thought she was thinking how to turn me down but then she smiled at me and said yes.
I'm completely head-over-heels!
I've been having a drink in the bar with Herr Braun and a few friends. Perhaps I've over done it slightly but well, its the happiest day of my life!

Cheerio!
Jem

Dear diary,
Went to see Madge today,
It was absolutely hilarious!
Apparantly when Jo heard she first declared that she hated me! Until she found out who I was marrying! Then she cheered up!
Seems that the little minx had decided that we were made for each other and that we had to marry! Trust Jo!
I took the whole jolly lot of them up to the san to show them it and where I was going to live-sorry we are going to live. I haven't quite got used to everything yet!
They seemed satisfied with it, though Jo made up some tripe about it being jolly lonely until I get married! I could ring that girl's neck sometimes! We've been engaged less than a week and already she's trying to find the wedding day!
Oh well! She'll just have to wait and see!
They're off to England tomorrow so I'm going to be alone for a few days!
Cheerio!
Jem!

I'm bored so i think i can manage 1 more post before i go home.

Dear diary,
The post has just arrived and there've been some rather interesting items.

1. A postcard or rather three numbered ones off Joey, you don't realise how much you miss the scaramouche until she's not there to dose.
Mainly the usual holiday gossip been there, seen that, got this but there was 1 funny item. Miss Joey and the Robin managed to wake up the whole house 1 night because of a snail! Turns out that the creature had made a noise crawling across the window and Jo thought it was a ghost or something! Well, trust Jo is all I can say, and this girl is going to live in my chalet after I marry, I don't think I'll ever have any peace again!

2. A postcard off the robin.

3. A letter off Madge, the most welcome bit of post

4 and a letter off a Dr J Maynard. Turns out he's the twin of the Miss Maynard at school and a TB speciallist, turns out he's interested in a job when the san opens. From what I've heard in Jo and Madge's letters he seems a decent sort and I said I'd give him an interview when I go to London next.

The san's nearly ready now and we'll be advertising for patients in a few months.
Cheerio
Jem.

Thank you edith, lots and lots of diary entries to read.

Jem's proposal and how he wrote about being accepted were terribly sweet, he sounded so nervous (which I suppose he must've been though it's not like the Jem we know much Very Happy )

The post was fun too, I can just see Joey sending hundreds of postcards, and the Robin being sweet enough to send one. Good to see Jack arriving in the picture too.

Looking forward to what ever comes next.

I just found this and I love it! Normally I avoid drabbles like the plague until they are finished, but as this one is meant to be in 'bits' it's great.
More please Edith!

Am I the only one wondering whether the person Jem fancies is the "young minx" Joey rather than her big sister? Wink

Or am I too fresh from pondering that scene at the end of pb New Chalet School where Jem seems to flirt with Jo a bit!

I am a leetle stuck at the mo-and totally exhausted cos i'm in the middle of exams so there might not be much diary for a bit.

Dear diary,
Madge back today, went to dinner with her and talked about what had happened while she was away.
Been sorting out the final bits before the san is officially opened. I'll be glad when Maynard arrives. He's coming over with his sister tomorrow, so hopefully I won't have to do everything by myself.
Cheerio
Jem

Just visited the C&D boards for the first time. As I was reading Jem's Diary and the reactions to it I was thinking...wow, these guys are obsessive! Shocked I then realised I'd raced through all 6 pages in mega-fast time........so, it would appear, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Very Happy Thanks Edith, brilliant drabble. I loved it!

I'm still a bit stuck and bogged down with ideas, the main problem is the gap between Jo of and Princess, I know there's measles to contend with but beyond that I'm stuck!

#116:  Author: cazLocation: Cambridge PostPosted: Wed Jun 23, 2004 9:48 am

Didn't they also have a Matron for a term, who had to leave suddenly? That's why Madge was forced to employ Matron Webb (she makes a comment in Gay about Miss Bubb being the second awful person she'd got from an agency). And they started Guides at some point in that gap.

Hope that helps Very Happy

Don't know off hand if it contains any more info that Caz has given, but have a look on the FOCS website, the articles page and on on the missing terms by Caroline German (IIRC) She fills in the gaps for each term based on hints in the books.

#118:  Author: Elisabeth PostPosted: Wed Jun 23, 2004 1:16 pm

This is so good Edith.
If you can't fill in the gaps there's no reason why you shouldn't just jump over them!

#119:  Author: SusanLocation: Carlisle PostPosted: Mon Jun 28, 2004 12:05 pm

I tried to keep a five year diary a long while ago and it was surprising to go back years later and see how many gaps there were in it. So you could do that if there is nothing that comes to mind for a particular period.
