Proverbs, quoted I think by one of the triplets without knowing the source to Miss Annersley...

(Pro 19:13) "...a nagging spouse is a leaky faucet." I think it says dripping tap in some versions and leaky cistern in others!

Len says it (using the leaky cistern version) to Miss Annersley, who tells her not to use that expression.

My dear girl, we're insatiable! Haven't you realised?

#29:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 2:08 am

Ha ha! KB, you better be very careful what you say to me right now, HM or no HM. Would you like to be a blood red cannibal kangaroo? With a nice big (also blood red) bike? I might even make Rachel the goodie this time.

H'mm. No. I think that would stretch people's credulity one step too far... Laughing

#30:  Author: KBLocation: Berlin, Germany PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 5:56 am

That's it - if you're thinking of Rachel as the heroine, you must be sick! And I suppose I can almost put up with anything, but that might be because I'm running on 3 hours of sleep and am still dancing on the ceiling.

I know it still exists!!! I'm just working on other things while waiting to be bitten by the Emerson PB again. If it makes you feel any better, the next Amelia is due to be published in late March (I think) so hopefully I'll get a few ideas then.

Oh...but that involves making you wait. What a shame! Twisted Evil Evil or Very Mad

You want more? OK. Here's more:

Ooops. I forgot what i last posted.

#51:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 12:30 am

Right, you oh so patient people(!) I've forgotten where I got to (and so I'm sure have you) so here's the last bit I have on Word. It's quite possible that I wrote more and forgot to post it! Twisted Evil

Hilda gave Anna her instructions and returned to her seat, wondering how Elisaveta would react to this summons. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door, and the Princess, looking very nervous, entered and made the deep court curtsey that she occasionally reverted to under strain. Then she stood very straight and eyed the company warily.
“You sent for me, Miss Annersley?”
Hilda rose and went to place a hand on the girl’s shoulder. She turned her to face Amelia.
“Professor and Mrs Emerson, Mr and Mrs Emerson, allow me to introduce you to Elisaveta of Belsornia.”
Elisaveta’s eyes widened as she heard her title, instead of the more usual ‘Elisaveta Arsonira.’ The Staff at the Chalet did not as a rule make a fuss about her rank. Realising that this was deliberate on the mistress’ part, though, she inclined her head in a grave nod, and Emerson and Ramses rose and gave a short bow. Amelia utilised one of the privileges of age and stayed where she was, but Nefret stood in almost the same position as the young girl, and Amelia, glancing at her quickly, was reminded once again that her daughter in law had once been High Priestess of Isis in an oasis in the Nubian desert- a heritage that had never entirely left her.
Emerson moved forward to take Elisaveta’s hand. As he had frequently said, he couldn’t give a curse for royalty or aristocracy, but he had a very soft spot for women in general and young girls in particular, and his chivalrous impulses, like those of his son, had gotten them in trouble more than once. “Miss er- Annersley has told us of your situation,” he told her. “We will help in any way we can.”
Nefret smiled behind her hand at this, while Elisaveta’s jaw quite frankly dropped in shock.
A gentle pressure on her upper arm from the senior mistress reminded the Princess that some sort of response was in order, and she stepped away from Miss Annersley so that she was standing alone before the tall Professor.
“I thank you, sir, and my father the King will also be grateful,” she said quietly.

*claps hands loudly* Attention please, girls. As a reward(!) for your endless (!!) patience (!!!), here's a little more. It is only a little more, but since I've finished the fill in, I've no excuse so- here you are! Laughing

*hoping the new Amelia will give me more inspiration*

“I thank you, sir, and my father the King will also be grateful,” she said quietly. Then she glanced at Miss Annersley before continuing, still with that maturely grave dignity. “May I ask, Professor, what you have to suggest?” Elisaveta moved to take a seat, and only then did Ramses and Emerson seat themselves. Nefret and Hilda Annersley had already done so.
Emerson, strangely touched by the young princess, cleared his throat loudly. “Uh- well, we have reason to believe that we know who your mysterious spectator is. Or at least, who’s in charge of them. We have er, connections.”
The Princess raised one brow at him. “Connections?”
“Connections!” Amelia told her firmly. Elisaveta looked at her, and realised that the older woman was inflexible. She would discover no more about these ‘connections’ at this point in time.
“Can you stop him from watching me?” Elisaveta demanded.
“I-we-er,” Emerson stuttered to a stop and looked pleadingly at his wife.
“We can try,” that lady informed her portentously. “We are among the few who are safe from him; the few who can make such a request.”
“I-I see,” Elisaveta responded, unsure how to take this.
Realising that the Emersons were in danger of getting seriously off track, Miss Annersley intervened.
“Could you tell Professor and Mrs Emerson when the treasure was moved?” the senior mistress suggested in her soft voice.
Elisaveta looked at her doubtfully. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” she asked, with small regard for tact. “I mean, if they know-“ Elisaveta caught Amelia’s eye, and drew to a stop.
Hilda Annersley began to contemplate removing Amelia. She was becoming inconvenient.

Sorry, Kathy. Na da inspiration! Hopefully the new one will help.

"Continue, Elisaveta!" Miss Annersley urged, giving Mrs Emerson a hard look.
Elisaveta glanced warily at the Emersons and back at Miss Annersley. "I don't know where the stuff is," she whispered.
"You have no opinions at all in the matter, do you?" queried Amelia, returning Hilda's hard look.
"No!" returned the Princess indignantly.
"But surely you must do!" insisted Amelia, who could not believe that anyone would be so careless as to mislay a heap of priceless antiquities.
"Damned collectors!" muttered Emerson.
"We didn't collect them!" Elisaveta flared. "They were given to us!"
"They were?" Emerson's eyes brightened. AFter excavation and -uh- certain other activities, his favourite occupation was paying visits to a variety of theives and archaeologists, and threatening to tear out their collective livers. "Who by?"
"A gentleman from the British Museum!" Elisaveta told him, at her stateliest.
"Budge!" shrieked Emerson in outrage, his face turning purple. To Hilda's surprise, the rest of the family remained unmoved.
"Budge?" she repeated politely.
Nefret hid a smile, before turning to explain. "Budge was an offical at the British Museum, Miss Annersley. He acquired a wide variety of antiquities for the Museum's Egyptian section through decidedly questionable tactics. Because of that, he and my father in law have always been at daggers drawn."
"You mean he stole them?" gasped the Senior Mistress.
"He didn't. He encouraged others to do so, though," put in Ramses. "The worst of it was that Budge was taking from Egypt antiquities that are literally priceless, and the poor Egyptians who actually discovered the treasures were not fairly reimbursed. Egypt is a poor country, you see, and poverty drives people to desperate measures."
"WAs that an aphorism?" Emerson demanded, his black brows drawing together as he regarded his son.
Ramses' severely handsome features lightened in a grin.
"It looks like it, doesn't it, sir? I will attempt not to offend again."
"Does any of this shed new light on the Princess' situation?" Miss Annersley put in firmly, determined to prevent the conversation from going off track once again.
Amelia looked meditative and did not reply immediately.

Anyway, I'm still very much dipping in and out of here and trying desperately to squash any more random PBs. I don';t want any more ideas for stories, I want ideas for the stories I've already got!

I think at one point i had around five or six. Needless to say they did not continue. Three is quite enough! Then I got ambushed by the Lorna PB but very basely handed him over to Catherine. then another PB came along and whispered a drabble idea in my ear, but Imanaged to ignore him/her/it so completely that I now can't remember what the said idea was. Which is slightly annoying. It had potential!

Amelia looked meditative and did not reply immediately. “I don’t believe it does,” she conceded after a moment. “I do apologise. I will take steps. Emerson!”
Emerson stopped muttering and glowering at his pipe and looked at his wife.
“Yes, my dear?”
Hilda Annersley realised that the wide smile that crossed his features was not, in fact, a smile, and spared a moment to marvel at the relationship that existed between the senior Emersons.
“That is enough about Budge,” Amelia told Emerson firmly. “These people, difficult although it may be for you to believe, are not primarily interested in Egyptology. I am certain they could not give a- “
“Curse?” Nefret interjected with a grin, ignoring Miss Annersley’s attempts at polite denial. “Now, where were we?”
Hilda gave Mrs Emerson the Younger a smile that was almost grateful. She was starting to feel very tired.
“We have established, I think, that a number of treasures have been moved from the Belsornian Royal Collection during the last few years. More recently, a several of the smaller items have disappeared, and in the past month we have been alerted to the fact that the Princess may be under watch from unknown forces, who may or may not be related to the said disappearance of part of the Collection. Elisaveta, what can you tell us about the Collection as a whole?”
Elisaveta looked awkward for a moment. Truth to tell, she was not in the least interested and had tended to politely ignore her father when he started enthusing about his collection of antiquities and objets d’art.
“Er-“ she began, and caught the eye of both the Senior Mistress and Amelia. Elisaveta’s mouth shut with a snap. The glint in the eyes of both women had been identical, and the Princess pulled herself together before speaking with dignity.
“I am not sure what exactly my father’s collection consists of,” she admitted. “I know about some of it. He has several mummies, including one from the tomb of some queen. I can’t remember her name. Teti-Tetsheri-“
Emerson’s face turned purple and he began to splutter incoherently.

I'm boiling over with ideas for this one, now. I just need to keep them in some sort of order...

Emerson’s face turned purple and he began to splutter incoherently.
“Tetisheri?” Nefret supplied, with a reassuring glance at the girl, who was eyeing Emerson somewhat nervously.
“Yes. Also lots of jewellery. And some Romanov pieces as well,” she added casually.
Hilda gasped. “Romanov? You mean-“
Elisaveta turned grave eyes on her. “But yes,” she replied, curiously formal. “My great grandmother was a Russian Grand Duchess. Because of that, unknown to anyone, Uncle Nicky and Aunt Alix sent many of their private items to us. No-one else knows,” Elisaveta added belatedly, unconcerned at the surprise that had crossed the faces opposite her at this nonchalent reference to the ill fated Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna. Elisaveta herself had never known the Imperial family, but her father had- known them well, in fact- so the young Princess had become accustomed to hearing of them by these familiar terms.
“Bloody Maspero,” Emerson muttered. He was not at all interested in the Romanov jewels, or the fate of their former owners. As his wife had once commented, items had to be the best part of 2000 years old before Emerson considered them worthy of his attention.
“Who is Maspero?” Miss Annersley asked patiently, with a nod of thanks towards Elisaveta.
Ramses took a hand. “The former Director of Antiquities, Miss Annersley. While he was in office, several items discovered by us in Tetisheri’s tomb disappeared. Among them was a mummy. My father has worried about it ever since.”
“And that was nearly 20 years ago!” Nefret supplemented cheerfully.
“This is all very well, but Sethos would not be interested in Russian jewels,” Amelia announced loftily.
“Are you certain of that, Mother?”
“I- well, now you mention it. He has certainly removed other items in the past. And –“ Amelia stopped dead.
“Are you all right, Mother?” Nefret asked, somewhat alarmed.
“Perfectly, my dear. A thought has just occurred to me.” She turned to Elisaveta, who was in the process of edging closer to Miss Annersley.
“What is it, Mrs Emerson?” Miss Annersley asked, with a furtive glance towards the clock. How much longer would this interview last? The bell for the last lesson of the day had come and gone; Hilda herself should have been with Lower IVa. She sincerely hoped that someone had noticed her absence and provided the appropriate supervision. The thought of Alixe von Elsen and her crew being left to their own devices was enough to make anyone’s blood run cold.
“Was our mummy by any chance among the missing items?” Amelia asked.
“I don’t know. It may have been,” Elisaveta stammered, thinking longingly of her games lesson. It was such a lovely day. She flung a wistful glance out of the window, and the senior mistress caught it and decided to act.
“Elisaveta, my dear, do you think you could contact your father and ask him to send us more details? An inventory of what you have and what has gone missing could be of use, I imagine?” Hilda raised her brows at Nefret as she spoke.
That lady nodded. “Indeed. I know it’s a lot to ask of you, Elisaveta,” Mrs Emerson the Younger continued seriously, “but I think if we are to help you we do need this information.”
“If it makes you feel happier,” Miss Annersley added, “I will take charge of the documents myself and ensure they are secure. Do you think you could do as we ask?”
Elisaveta’s eyes went from the now serious Emerson, his eyes intent on the conversation, to Amelia, to Nefret, Ramses, and then back to Miss Annersley. She gave a hesitant nod.
“OK. I’ll do it. I’ll write to my father.” She paused and looked pleadingly at Hilda. “Please, Miss Annersley, can- may- I be excused?”
The Senior Mistress smiled and nodded, and the Princess escaped thankfully. Miss Annersley herself was equally relieved when the Emersons, looking thoughtful, made an appointment to see her when the requisite papers arrived from Belsorna, and departed themselves en masse, leaving the exhausted mistress to seek a restorative cup of coffee in the Staff Room. Amelia would have undoubtedly have prescribed a ‘nice whiskey and soda’, but Hilda did not feel she had reached that point- yet.

Here's the next bit. Not terribly good or exciting, but necessary. It doesn't feel right somehow (maybe cos I'm feeling rather sick for some reason- starting to wonder aboutt hat chicken from tescos)

A week later and Mlle Lepattre, Headmistress of the Chalet School, was sitting going through the mail bag, and sorting them into form groups. To her surprise- she had not been informed of the previous week’s events- Charla Emerson ended up with the bulk of the letters in the Sixth. Several of those letters, Mlle was perturbed to note, were written in a masculine hand. When the Head flipped the envelopes to check the sender’s address, she was startled to see that that was inscribed in a language she vaguely recognised as being Arabic. Frowning, Mlle put those letters aside, and finished her sorting. Then she sat back to think for a moment, before rising to push the little bell.
Sixteen year old Anna Pfeiffen answered it promptly, her face wreathed in smiles.
Mademoiselle smiled at her. “Anna, ma petite. Go and seek Mademoiselle Charlotte Emerson, if you please, and bring her here to me.”
Anna, still beaming, curtsied and vanished.
Before long, Charla appeared, greatly wondering. Mlle looked gravely at her as she curtsied awkwardly at the door and crossed to the desk.
“Charlotte. Do you, perhaps, have a birthday this week?”
Charla’s dark eyes widened. “But no, Mademoiselle,” she returned in French as fluent as Mlle’s own. “My birthday is not until September.”
Mlle’s brow creased, and she indicated the pile of letters on her desk. “Then, can you explain these?”
Charla’s black eyebrows drew together in a manner startlingly reminiscent of her father. Her head went up and her eyes flashed. “I did not know I had to explain my correspondence!” she said haughtily.
“Do not be impertinent, I beg you,” Mlle cautioned her coldly. “Many of your letters appear to be in Arabic, and from men. These people are not on the list of approved correspondents for you, Charlotte.”
Charla’s face positively glowed and she gave a little squeal of excitement, much to Mlle’s astonishment. “Arabic? Oh, Mademoiselle! Are they from Fatima and Jumana and Selim and Daoud?”
Mlle glanced through them quickly and nodded affirmation.
Charla grinned widely. “How lovely! Please, may I have them?”
“Certainly not!” Mlle told her. “As I said, these people are not on your list of approved correspondents. You cannot receive letters from anyone!”
“They aren’t anyone!” Charla flared. “They are members of my family. I’m sorry no-one thought to add them. We’re not used to sending people to school! Phone my grandmother and she’ll tell you!”
Before Mlle could respond or Charla continue in this vein, the study door flew open and a flurried Anna appeared, panting.
Mlle rose to her feet. “What is the meaning of this, Anna?” she demanded.
“It- it is Dr Tracy!” the girl stuttered. “He said he must come here at once!”
She was pushed aside, and Mlle looked from her to the man who took her place- Dr Tracy, confidante and medical advisor to the King of Belsornia.
“Dr Tracy. What-what is the meaning of this?” the Head asked, too startled to remember her manners. Charla, wisely for her, kept quiet and watched the scene that unfolded before her with great interest.

*chucks Vikki a rope*

“Good morning, Mademoiselle,” the Englishman said in his fluent French. Like Imperial Russia, French was the language of the Court in Belsornia. “I need to speak with Miss Annersley urgently.”
Mademoiselle eyed Dr Tracy suspiciously. “May I ask why?” she enquired, icily polite.
The doctor looked mysterious. “I cannot say,” he told her pompously, wishing that Mrs Russell, nee Bettany, had never seen fit to get married. Madge, he felt, had always been more sensible than this twittering Frenchwoman.
“Sir, I must insist!”
Dr Tracy remained implacable. He would divulge his mission to Miss Annersley and no other, and Mlle conceded defeat at last.
“Very well!” she snapped, losing her normally pleasant manner. “I am to take a class now, Monsieur le docteur, so I will send Miss Annersley to you. You may await her here!” and the Headmistress swept out of the room, indignation plain in every movement.
Charla remained absolutely still; even her breathing was almost silent, and as Dr Tracy had not even registered her presence in the room, she remained undetected for a while longer.
The Senior Mistress entered with her usual quiet dignity, expecting to see her superior. At the sight of Dr Tracy, she stopped dead, and the doctor, turning, beamed at her in a manner calculated to make anyone nervous, and practically pounced on her in order to shake hands. Charla had to bite her lip to prevent herself from giggling at the expression on the mistress’ face.
“Miss Annersley?” Dr Tracy asked, still shaking.
“Yes, sir. And you are?” Hilda raised one brow. For one reason and another she had never met the man before her now, although she had seen and spoken with King Carl several times.
“I do apologise, Madam!” enthused the doctor, gripping Miss Annersley’s hand with both of his. “I am Dr Tracy, an envoi from His Majesty of Belsornia.”
“I see. Won’t you sit down?” Hilda asked, extracting her hand with some difficulty and moving smoothly towards the desk.
“No time, Madam, no time!” Dr Tracy assured her. “There is no time to waste, none at all!”
“So you have said,” Hilda said politely, resisting the temptation to inform the man before her that repetition was bad form. “May I ask why you felt the need to speak to me?”
Dr Tracy bowed and whipped out a small envelope from his pocket. He then presented it to Miss Annersley with a flourish, who eyed him rather as if he was the smallest and slimiest of creatures.
“What is this?” Hilda asked, holding the envelope with the tips of her fingers.
Dr Tracy tried, and failed, to wink. “His Majesty had graciously elected to communicate to you the inventory of those items removed from the collections of himself and Her Serene Highness the Crown Princess, Elisaveta Margherita, as you requested.”
Hilda nodded her thanks and moved to the opposite side of the room to examine the communication she held. It was cryptic in the extreme. The first part read:
“My daughter, I thought it would interest you to know that my old mother is now living where she can have plenty of salt with her eggs.”
“What?” ejaculated Miss Annersley, not unnaturally puzzled. She read on:
“Her little helpers are with her, and she brought her charms. You know how superstitious she is. She desires you not to worry; she has all of the money that kind Uncle Nick sent her, and all the cheap trinkets left to her by dear Olga. Typical of Olga, is it not? She also brought her jars with her- so useful for storage. Your affectionate father, C.A.R.”
“Well!” exclaimed Miss Annersley. She turned to look at Dr Tracy, and, in the process, noticed Charla for the first time.
“Charlotte!” Her voice was pained, but Charla remained unmoved. She left her hiding place and went to the mistress, oblivious to the basilisk stare being directed her way by Dr Tracy.
“Do you want my family?” she asked abruptly.
Hilda opened her mouth to say no, glanced at the idiotic doctor and then from the remarkable effusion she held to the intent dark eyes looking at her.
“That sounds like a good idea,” she admitted. “I will call them. In the meantime, will you collect the Crown Princess and Josephine Bettany, and go to my room. I will join you there shortly.”
Charla bit her lip again at the irritated expression that crossed Dr Tracy’s face, but dropped her curtsy and retired meekly, looking positively angelic.

After politely but firmly disposing of the slimy doctor, Hilda re read the letter from the King once more before putting a call through to the Kron Prinz Karl, where the Emersons were staying.
“Could I speak to Mrs Emerson, please?”
There was a moment’s pause. “Er- which one, gnadige Fraulein?” Herr Braun asked uncertainly. He continued in English. “Do you wish the Lady Professor Emerson or Mrs Dr Emerson?” he asked, getting the various names and titles of both Amelia and Nefret well and truly confused.
Hilda had to take a second to think it through. “I’ll speak to Mrs Dr Emerson,” she announced at last. The truth was that Hilda, although formidable in her own way, was more than a little intimidated by Amelia. Nefret was so much more approachable, she felt.
“Nefret Emerson speaking,” came down the line before Hilda had time to pull herself together.
“Mrs Emerson! The inventory from the King has arrived. Would it be possible for you and your family to come to discuss it? I confess I find it rather puzzling.”
Nefret gave a soft laugh. “That doesn‘t surprise me, Miss Annersley. My parents in law- particularly my mother in law- specialise in the puzzling and bizarre; in fact, I would find it odd if this case was straightforward!”
“I see,” Hilda responded blankly.
Nefret laughed again. “But don’t worry. Ramses and I can keep them under control- most of the time. You haven’t any deep, dark passages in the area, have you?”
“Well, there’s the caves, but I-“ began the puzzled Senior Mistress.
“My mother in law revels in deep dark passages,” Nefret told her kindly.
“But- isn’t that rather dangerous? At her age?” Hilda could have bitten her tongue as soon as the words left her lips. What was it with this family? In a very short time they could reduce her to tactless confusion- and that was a state that the famously tranquil Senior Mistress of the Chalet School did not relish.
“She’s nearly eighty three,” Nefret told her frankly. “She only admitted two years ago that the climb to the summit of the Great Pyramid was becoming too much. But when we’re in Luxor, she still insists on climbing up above the temple of Deir el Bahri in the Valley of the Kings- although that’s for sentimental reasons. She manages it too,” Amelia’s daughter in law finished cheerfully. “In fact, between her parasol and my father in law, she gets up there quicker than Ramses and I do!”
“How interesting!” gasped Miss Annersley, rather faintly.
Nefret grinned. “We’ll come at once, Miss Annersley. I’ll bring some whiskey. I think you’ll need it, my dear, if only for medicinal purposes. Oh, and before I forget, two other family members turned up late last night. May they join us?”
“Of course, Mrs Emerson,” Hilda said.
“Thank you, Miss Annersley. Please call me Nefret. I’ll see you soon!” And Mrs Emerson the Younger hung up firmly, leaving Miss Annersley staring rather dazedly at the receiver at her end.
“I’m almost glad she’s bringing the whiskey!” Hilda muttered, before replacing the receiver on it’s cradle, and making her way towards her own snuggery.
Meanwhile, Charla had thrown etiquette to the winds and had raced along the corridors to the Prefects’ Room, where she knew she would find Joey Bettany. She practically fell into the room, and the Head Girl turned to grin at her. Once they had overcome their initial animosity, Jo and Charla had settled into a bantering friendship.
Charla responded to the Head Girl’s charm and charisma, and Jo for her part was fascinated by the insight into archaeology and Arabic cultures that Charla could provide. In return for teaching Charla Russian and Belsornian, the younger girl taught Joey some Arabic, and gave her the basics of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing and demotic.
“The Abbess says we’re to go to her room,” Charla announced as she flung herself into a basket chair.
“You are not to do that, Charla!” exclaimed Simone Lecoutier, who resented Charla’s easy manner. Simone, who was still passionately jealous of Joey’s other friends- although she had become reconciled to Frieda Mensch and Marie von Eschenau- thought, with some justice, that this new girl did not give prefects in general and the Head Girl in particular the deference that the French girl saw as being their due.
Jo waved an impatient hand. “Never mind that now, Simone! Charla, why does she want us?”
“I have my own ideas on the subject,” was the mysterious and irritating response.
Joey stared. “Well? Aren’t you going to tell us more?”
Charla hesitated and glanced meaningfully at Simone and Frieda. “I cannot.”
Frieda, true to meaning of her name, as always, rose. “Then Simone and I will leave. We are on duty in any case. Come, Simone!” and she tactfully steered the volatile French girl from the room, leaving the other two alone.
“Good old Frieda!” pronounced Joey in satisfaction as the door closed behind the pair. “Now we can talk. Give, Charla!”
Charla gave her a slow and provoking smile. “Can’t. I need to get someone else. Go to the Abbess’ room, and I’ll see you there!” and with that, she whirled out of the room, leaving Joey with no choice but to obey.

Mostly introductions...

Joey, Elisaveta and Charla had no sooner gathered in Miss Annersley’s room when a resounding yell echoed through the School.
Miss Annersley gave a quickly bitten off exclamation. Joey’s black eyes were wide, and Charla was beaming.
“They’re here,” Miss Annersley announced with resignation. “I’ll go and fetch them. Joey, go to Karen and beg some refreshments, please. Elisaveta and Charla, have a look at this,” and the Senior Mistress handed over the cryptic letter given to her earlier before following Jo out of the door. Charla glared at her retreating back, but Elisaveta’s puzzled expression intrigued her, so she settled down to argue possible solutions with the other girl.
Miss Annersley had made her way swiftly to the front hall, dreading what would happen if the Emersons believed she had forgotten them. When she arrived, she saw Emerson arguing politely (Emerson was always polite to women) but firmly with a bewildered Mademoiselle. The latter turned with relief to Hilda as she entered with her usual quietness.
“Ah, Hilda. Do you know these people?” The Head waved towards the motley crew, and Hilda Annersley gasped as she realised that she now had to accommodate a further ten people in her little snuggery.
“Er-yes, Mademoiselle.” Hilda flashed another look at the group, and nodded as she caught Nefret’s apologetic smile. She then drew the Headmistress away for a moment.
“I’m sorry, Therese,” she muttered in rapid French, unaware that several of the visitors spoke that language with a fluency equalling her own; “I have been expecting them. They are Charlotte’s relatives, and I think they may be able to help us with our problem with Elisaveta.”
Mademoiselle’s brow cleared. She did not know what the problem was in detail, but Mrs Russell had naturally ensured that she, as Headmistress, was informed of the fact that Belsornia’s young Heiress was once again in danger. Now she smiled at the younger woman. “I understand, cherie. Marguerite told me that you know most of the details, and that these people could advise. But there are so many of them! Where do you wish to hold your meeting?”
“I was going to hold it in my room,” Hilda admitted, “but-“
“You must use the study!” the Head told her firmly. “I am going over to Le Petit Chalet in any case, so it is free.”
“Thank you, Mademoiselle.” The Senior Mistress smiled gratefully at her chief as that lady nodded and moved away. Then she took a deep breath and turned to examine the gathering in front of her more closely.
Amelia stepped forward. She was immaculately dressed in a loose gown of her favourite crimson, with a matching hat on her head. As always, she carried a parasol- in this case, a ‘frivolous’ one in crimson silk to match her dress. The shaft was, naturally, reinforced, but it was by no means as sturdy as her black ‘working’ parasols. The latter could be, and often had been, used as a weapon of no mean power.
“Miss Annersley, I must present to you the other members of my family,” the elder Mrs Emerson announced. That was typical of Amelia; she ordered, or pronounced, rather than asked.
“Please do,” Hilda murmured politely, her eyes going from the elderly lady beside her to the two dark skinned grinning figures at the back of the phalanx of Emersons. She thought she could pick out other individuals too.
Amelia carried on. “My husband, son and daughter in law you already know,” she began calmly. “Allow me to introduce my grandson, David- Charla’s twin brother,” she added with a smile that softened her face and made her appear less formidable.
Hilda smiled at the young man who bowed over her hand, inwardly marvelling that the gypsy-like Charla could have such a fair twin. David’s eyes were the same shade of cornflower blue as his mother’s, and he had straight blonde hair. At sixteen, he was considerably taller than his twin sister, and years of working and living in Egypt had left him with a tan nearly as deep as that of his dark haired sister.
“I am gratified to meet you at last, Madam,” David announced pedantically. “I am astonished that you are, indeed, still intact. That is a feat of no mean-“
“David!” Amelia snapped, and her grandson drew to a stop. He was not at all fazed, however; he gave his grandmother a grin, and Hilda saw that in spite of her efforts to keep sober, Amelia’s lips twitched.
Amelia turned to the other young man present, and her steely grey eyes were softer than usual as he came to join her.
“This is my great nephew, Abdullah Todros. I call him Dolly,” she added, and Hilda smiled and nodded at him.
Dolly (in fact, he preferred to be known as Abdul these days, but the name bestowed on him in infancy by his great- aunt had stuck- among the family, at any rate) smiled. He looked more like Charla than David did, with tanned skin and dark hair and eyes. In temperament he resembled his own father, being gentler than either of his tempestuous cousins.
Amelia gave him another fond smile before beckoning at the two very tall men at the back of the group to move forward. They did so, in unison, and bowed deeply before flashing wide white grins at the bemused Senior Mistress.
The taller of the two- a huge man with a fantastic turban and gentle eyes- shook Hilda’s hand gently.
“It is good to meet you, Sitt!” he told her frankly. “You will look after our little Sitt, no? You would not wish to arouse the wrath of the-“
“Daoud!” exclaimed Ramses, with an embarrassed glance towards Hilda. Nefret had hidden her mouth with her hand, but her eyes gave away her amusement.
Amelia tapped Daoud on the arm with a firm finger. “This school is very good, Daoud. Charla is enjoying herself very much.”
“She would enjoy being at home with us more!” declared the giant. “But if that is what you say, Sitt Hakim, it must be so.”
“Yes, we all know the word of the Sitt Hakim is law,” Emerson agreed solemnly, with a provocative glance at his wife, who blithely ignored him and continued with her presentations. The slighter of the two men- the one wearing a tarboosh and a European suit (as oppposed to the galabeeyah favoured by Daoud) bowed, smirked, and eyed Hilda consideringly. He was always looking to add to his collection of very well treated wives.
“This is Selim, our reis in Egypt- that means captain, Miss Annersley. He is also a member of our family. Now that is all.”
Hilda realised with relief that she was correct. Instead of there being ten people to accommodate, there was only eight. But, she thought ruefully as she led them into the study, what an eight! She would rather deal with the entire Fourth Form, at their most unruly, than take on the assembled might of this eccentric family.

OK, here's more:

She gave them all a smile, and turned to lead the crowd into the study.
“Our headmistress has kindly offered us the use of this room,” she explained as Amelia calmly headed for the seat behind the desk. Emerson followed his wife and leaned on the windowsill behind her, smoking placidly.
“Er,” said Miss Annersley, her usual self-possession deserting her at this. “I’m afraid we don’t have enough chairs,” she added apologetically. “I’ll ring the kitchens and ask the girls to be sent here instead of my room, I think,” and she went immediately to the bell. That completed, she turned once more to find that Selim, Daoud, David and Dolly had seated themselves Arab fashion on the floor; Ramses had followed his father’s example and lolled against the window behind Nefret’s chair. The Senior Mistress noted that one chair had been left empty, and moved towards it as Anna appeared at the door.
The girl’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “Did you want something, Fraulein?” she stammered.
“We want Charla Emerson!” Emerson boomed at her in his appalling German. His wife winced.
“Pray do not try to speak German, Emerson! The only language you can speak with any facility is-“
“My Arabic is better than yours, anyhow!” Emerson smirked.
“That is not the point, Emerson. Ramses, would you-“
Ramses grinned at his mother. “No need, Mother. And if you will forgive me for pointing this out, shouldn’t we leave all orders to Miss Annersley?” and he directed the full force of his very charming smile at the rather befuddled Senior Mistress.
That lady closed her mouth with a snap before turning back to Anna and requesting the immediate presence of Charlotte Emerson, Josephine Bettany and Elisaveta Arsonira. That done, she sank thankfully (at last) to her seat. Nefret produced her bottle of whiskey, and Amelia’s eyes gleamed.
“A nice drop of whiskey! That was an excellent thought of yours, my dear.” Amelia reached for her parasol and for a moment looked as if she was about to poke the unfortunate Hilda with it in order to prompt the latter to seek some glasses. Nefret forestalled her, however, and discreetly pushed the parasol tip back to the floor.
“Could we have some glasses, Miss Annersley?”
Before the Senior Mistress could respond, the door flew open Joey Bettany fell into the room, her eyes wide and her hair on end as usual.
“Joey!” expostulated Hilda indignantly. “Really! You should be-“
“Oh, Miss Annersley!” gasped Jo, too upset to heed the rebuke. “I can’t find them, and neither can Anna or Simone. Charla and Veta have vanished!”

Well, at least Charla is resourceful and strong, she has to be, coming from a family like the Emersons.

That was something I didn't see coming!
Thanks Lisa, now, what happens next?

Still keeping us cliff-hanging, Lisa?

#155:  Author: patmacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Wed Apr 14, 2004 6:20 pm

I've jsut read this nearly from the beginning - laughing all the way at how you have caught Amelia so exactly.

Really good and please can we have more?

#156:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 12:46 pm

If Joey had hoped to create a sensation she was, on the face of it, disappointed. The Emerson clan remained calm (they were used to this sort of thing) and Miss Annersley merely raised her brows at the Head Girl in a fashion that made her wish she could sink into the deepest, darkest tomb Egypt had ever produced.

More later! Laughing

#157:  Author: SusanLocation: Carlisle PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 1:44 pm

There had better be more later. That could not in by any possibility be called a proper post.

*swooning at the mere thought of the full force of Ramses' very charming smile* Very Happy is it wrong to lust after a married character in a book?! Wink

yes, I've read COTS Lisa. Re spoilers, I think there's only one major one isn't there? and if you read the books in the wrong order like I have, that's given away anyway, so you probably don't have to worry too much.

Now I want more of this - please? Smile

#162:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Sat Apr 17, 2004 5:40 pm

Ah ha I know I've pretty much given away the Ramses/Nefret business, Donna - which would spoil the Falcon/Thunder reading experience to an extent, but I certainly haven't given away the biggest spoiler of the lot!!!

And feel quite free to lust over Ramses. He's rather delectable, isn't he?

#163:  Author: DonnaLocation: Liverpool PostPosted: Sat Apr 17, 2004 10:28 pm

I know you haven't - that is, if we're talking about the same spoiler! Anyway, I knew about the Ramses/Nefret business before the appropriate book, and I think it adds to the reading experience if anything! Smile

*still swooning over Ramses here and Jack in Angel's drabble*
