#1: Catherine's new job Author: PatLocation: Doncaster PostPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2004 9:42 pm

Rosalie Dene walked through from the Head’s study into her own domain, that was furnished now with another desk, with smart new typewriter adorning the exact centre. Standing in the middle of the room was a slight fair-haired girl in her twenties, looking rather confused and more than a little scared.
“Miss Annersley will see you now, dear,” she said. “Don’t look so afraid, she won’t bite you know.”
“What am I doing here?” asked the girl in a small voice. “I don’t even know where here is!”
“What do you mean, Miss Laidler? You are at the Chalet School of course. We advertised for the post of Assistant and you were the choice of everybody on the interview panel. Surely you remember?” Rosalie looked a little impatient as she spoke, which turned to concern as Catherine went white and swayed alarmingly.
“The Chalet School? B-but that’s fictional! I-I mean it’s just a story that someone wrote.”
“Is anything the matter?” a deep but very beautiful voice sounded from the doorway, and Catherine turned to see the Head. The brown wavy hair was drawn back from the face into a soft bun at the back of her neck. The blue-grey eyes (that had never yet needed glasses, thought Catherine confusedly) gazed on her in concern.
“Miss Laidler seems to have forgotten applying for her post, and even where the school is,” said Rosalie Dene with some asperity.
Poor Catherine just stood there, looking form one to the other as if she couldn’t believe her eyes. She tried to say something, but her mouth opened and closed rather like that of a stranded cod, and she felt incapable of uttering another word.
“Come into my office and sit down, dear,” said Miss Annersley gently, taking the now shaking young woman by the arm and steering her to a low chair set as one of a pair at one side of the large airy room. Out of the window Catherine could see a glimpse of mountains, rising snow-capped into the air. Gratefully she sank into the chair, while the Head (the Abbess?) had a quick word with Rosalie. (Dene she mentally added to herself. She knew her Chalet School books, even if she seemed to be part of them for some reason)>
“Ask Matey to come here would you Rosalie? I don’t know what’s up here, but I think we need her here.”
Catherine heard this with some trepidation. It would be bad enough if this was the Matey of the original books, but there was no way of telling as yet whether this was the case or not. Catherine was well aware that other people had written about the Chalet School and their portrayal of Matey had not always been as the original author had intended. Two versions especially were to be avoided like the plague, she thought. Lesley’s version wouldn’t be too bad at the moment, unless she was already well into the Real Chalet School, in which case she wanted out of this now!!! However, if this was the Matey from the Advent Drabbles she could be in real trouble now. Then she remembered Tensions. That Matey would drug her with opium and she knew the consequences of that, even if these people didn’t. The various alternatives were rushing around in her mind, confusing her even more badly, and she shut her eyes and groaned.
“Don’t worry my dear. I’ve asked Miss Dene to fetch Matron and if she thinks it necessary we’ll ask Dr Maynard to come and see you. He only lives next door.”
That was a little better. Jack had usually been written as a nice person, so she felt that she would be safe with him.
“Hello everyone! What’s happening here?” the cheerful voice sounded form the French windows and then the owner came into Catherine’s view. No doubting who this was, even if she hadn’t guessed from the voice and the method of entry. The great black earphones of hair over the ears looked as incongruous as she had expected, and she tried not to stare. Jo Maynard smiled down at her.
“Miss Laidler? Welcome to the Chalet School. I do hope you will be happy with us. Most people are judging from the length of time they stay with us.”
Poor Catherine read a threat into this speech, feeling that she would be trapped in this imaginary world for ever. The door opened and Matey came in, carrying a small bottle of some sort of liquid which Catherine stared at in horrified fascination.
“What’s that?” she asked faintly.
“Just a little dose to give you strength,” said Matey cheerfully. “Rosalie said that you seemed to have had a shock of some sort that has made you lose your memory. This will help, believe me.”
Catherine did! But she had no strength in her legs to take her from the room, so she sat there while Matey duly measured out a dose and handed it to her. Seeing nothing else for it, she swallowed it down, finding it more pleasant than she had expected. Then her world turned dark and she new no more until she awoke in her own room, much to her relief. There in front of her were a small group of people, grinning down at her triumphantly.
“I told you that you should be careful what you posted,” said Pat. Vikki and Carolyn nodded solemnly. “Luckily Mary Poppins saw the justice of our cause and gave us a little helping hand. Remember when you write the next part of your drabble.”
Unable to speak from her emotions, Catherine could only nod in agreement.
