Here we go! See "An Altenative Romance" and "Decisions" (http://chaletian.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=957 ) for background to this story.

“How are you doing, love?” Nancy smiled at her partner as they sat on the sofa in the Graves’ salon, three nights before the start of term. Late in the evening, the inhabitants of Aldersnest were all long asleep and only the two friends were still awake in the house, savouring their last few hours alone together before their return to school the next day.

“Marvellously!” Kathie’s brown eyes sparkled as she used the word so beloved by their pupils. She sat cross-legged and very upright as she regarded her companion, “It has been a good holiday, hasn’t it?”

“Smashing!” the elder woman matched her friend’s slang with a chuckle. She relaxed against the sofa, her arms stretched along its back. “I haven’t felt so fit in a long time - all that cycling definitely did some good. And as for Cordoba - well! I don’t think words can do it justice.”

“It was unforgettable,” Kathie agreed happily. “Remember that little villa we stayed in the last weekend? That will feature in Paradise if there is any justice!”

Nancy laughed softly then gave a sigh, “Shame it has to come to an end.”

Kathie glanced at her affectionately, “Silly. You say that every term, but think how miserable you’d be without school. I can’t see you enjoying a life of inactivity, my dear.”

“Hmm! No, I suppose not,” her friend assented reluctantly. “Oh, all right! You’re not going to let me feel sorry for myself even tonight, are you?”

“Nope!” Kathie shot her a mischievous look, before yielding and reaching out with her hand, “Well, if you really want to know, I’m quite sorry it’s ending, too.”

Nancy smiled and slipped an arm around her friend’s shoulders, pulling her closer. “Really? I thought you were so keen to get back to school,” her voice was teasing, though her blue eyes were very soft.

“Oh, that too,” Kathie murmured. She leant against Nancy’s shoulder after a moment. “Actually, I think I’m just saying that I’m happy either way, as long as you’re here,” she said simply.

“Oh!” Nancy’s arm tightened around her friend, and they sat in a comfortable silence. “I don’t think you could say anything nicer,” she said at last, as the younger woman curled into her embrace. “The feeling is mutual, you know!”

Well, just because you asked so nicely ! Kiss

Sitting on the cosy sofa, Nancy rested her head on the shiny brown one below hers, “I say, Kathie, do you think we’ll manage all right this term?”

The younger woman turned slightly in her friend’s hold, “Of course we will. Why do you ask?”

“Oh, well,” Nancy hesitated. “It’s going to be a lot of work for both of us, that’s all, what with me being Head and you covering some of my classes.”

Kathie nodded briefly. “But we’ll cope. I think it’s good for both of us, actually,” she added reflectively, “I’m looking forward to taking the Seniors occasionally. This is my sixth year of teaching, after all - it’ll do me good to try something new.”

Nancy looked surprised, “I didn’t realise you wanted to take Senior maths. I thought your ambitions were all with geography.”

“Well, that’s my subject, of course,” her companion assented. “But any new experience is valuable, don’t you think?” She looked pensive, “If I do ever apply for Head of Geography - here or elsewhere - I’ll be glad to have spent more time with the elder girls.”

Nancy mused on this. “You’re right - though I don’t believe I ever planned so consciously. Certainly not at your stage in my career.”

Kathie gave a sudden smirk, “Must be the company I keep - see how the wisdom of old age has rubbed off!” She grinned as Nancy gave her a reproachful prod, “Go on, why don’t you call me ambitious and be done with it? I’m not ashamed!”

Her partner shook her head, “I wasn’t suggesting you should be. You’re an excellent teacher - and you’re right, it’s quite time you were stretched a bit more.” Nancy’s eyes began to dance as she saw her retaliation for the jibe about her age, “It’s just that I imagined that if you were after anyone else’s job, it would be Rosalind’s and not mine. But now I know why you were so keen for me to take Hilda’s post!”

“Well!” The younger woman emitted a squeak of outrage and sat bolt upright. “Of all the things to say! Nancy Wilmot, you know perfectly well that I didn’t express an opinion one way or another,” she glared at her friend.

“Oh, really? And how about all that moral support you offered?” Nancy began, but broke off very necessarily to defend herself from two small fists, “Hey!” There was a moment’s scuffle, Nancy relenting almost immediately though and allowing her diminutive partner to take the upper hand. “OK, OK! You know I’m just teasing!” She smiled at Kathie, “And that I couldn’t do without your support for a moment.”

“Huh! Well, I’m glad you can admit that, at least!” her companion tried to maintain her indignation, then started to giggle despite herself. “Besides, if you think I really want to teach all that horrible calculus, you are seriously mistaken!”

The elder woman chuckled at this retort. Then, as Kathie’s laughter subsided, she continued, “No, I was speaking in jest, of course. And anyway,” her voice grew slightly more serious, “If I’d been a better Head of Department, perhaps I’d have given you the opportunity earlier.”

Kathie’s brown eyes softened, “I wouldn’t have taken it at your expense.” There was a moment’s silence. “We can be grateful to Hilda, though. We’ll both have some interesting challenges this term.”

“We will.” Nancy agreed meditatively. Then, with a glance at the Graves’ grandfather clock, she dismissed such serious thoughts. “I say! It’s past twelve. Do you think perhaps we should call it a night?”

“Lights Out?” her partner inquired impishly.

“Well, yes,” The Head-to-be rose from the comfort of the sofa and proffered her hand, “Quite!”

And thus the curtain fell on Nancy and Kathie’s last evening alone - for the time being.

Ooh excellent thankyou Catherine!

Spurred on by comments on the September Afternoon drabble, I went and found Alternative Romance in the archive last night, and stayed up far later than I intended to reading it from start to finish!

I was just coming on to the CBB this evening to add to the end of the SA thread that I was looking forward to Alternative Challenge - and here it is! Looking forward to reading the rest.

Weirdly, I haven't actually read the 'real' Challenge yet - so when I finally do get my hands on it (probably via GGBP) I will no doubt be reading it from your perspective rather than EBD's!!

Going to look at Decisions now!

There can never be too many top quality drabbles in the world and I can't wait 6 months for more Cracks!

Anyway, back to the topic... Catherine, this is glorious. It's been years and years since I read Challenge but I can vaguely remember bits of it and it'll be fascinating following the plot from another viewpoint. Please post some more asap!

Just for the dancers, then!

(Sorry for the delay, by the way - had a really busy week and couldn't quite cope with Nancy's work as well as my own!)

“Morning Rosalie!” Nancy hailed the School’s Secretary easily as she entered that lady’s office early the next morning. “Ready for the off?”

Miss Dene looked up with a smile. “Good morning!” she rose from her desk, “And welcome to your new surroundings, Nancy - I hope you’re looking forward to the job!”

“As much as I ever shall be!” Nancy laughed and came over to shake the outstretched hand. “OK, Rosalie. We’ve a lot to get through. Can we talk through the day, please?”

“Certainly.” The Secretary picked up a number of papers from her desk, the uppermost a list of times and meetings, which she passed to the Head. “Here’s your schedule. As we discussed before, most of your time today and tomorrow will be spent with the domestic and teaching staff. This morning you have appointments with Karen, Gaudenz and Matron Lloyd - I’ll come for those as well, if you want.” She looked questioningly at Nancy, then continued as she received a nod of confirmation, “All their preparations for the new year have been completed, as far as I know, so I don’t expect any complications to arise. It will help familiarise you with their work, though.”

“Good, that’ll be useful,” Nancy assented readily. “That occupies us up to Mitagessen, does it?”

“Yes. We’ll take that in Speisesaal, as a good half the staff are back now and quite a number of the girls.” Rosalie glanced up, “By the way, Kathie and Rosalind Yolland will be looking after the unpacking in St. Therese’s, so you needn’t worry about that.”

“Excellent. OK, then what?”

“Individual interviews with the teaching staff. I’ve got their timetables here – I’ll bring you in copies when they come, so you can talk them over. The Head usually starts with those, then leads on to any specific teaching issues. With the form mistresses you’ll want to go through the form lists, of course. If you have questions about the new girls, you can call me in, and I’ll tell you what I know from the correspondence.”

“Thanks,” Nancy nodded, “I’ve been on the receiving end of start-of-term interviews, so I know what’s expected there, at least. Who am I seeing today?”

Rosalie checked her schedule. “Ruth Derwent, Rosalind Moore, Jeanne de Lachenais, Sarah Denny, and Kathie Robertson. Then we’ll continue with the younger staff tomorrow. Not everyone is back, of course, but there’ll be time on Friday and over the weekend to catch up with the others while the girls are settling down.”

“At any rate, we should be done by the time lessons start in earnest,” agreed Nancy, “and that’s the main thing. Super. Oh - by the way, Rosalie! Did you manage to fix me a moment with Nell Wilson this weekend?”

“I did,” the ever-efficient Miss Dene confirmed. “Actually, Sunday afternoon should be fairly flexible for both of you, but I’ve provisionally agreed with Gill Culver that you’ll go over to St. Mildred’s at 3pm. Is that alright?”

“Great.” Nancy rested against her secretary’s filing cabinet, “Could you make that a weekly appointment, please?”

“Certainly. Excuse me one moment -” Rosalie broke off as her telephone began to ring, “Chalet School, Head’s Office! Oh, good morning. Yes – of course -” she listened for a moment, “Matron, I’m with Miss Wilmot at the moment. May I return your call?” She hung up the receiver looking serious. “That was Helen Graves from the San. Hilda told you about our new Senior, Evelyn Ross – her mother is at the San, and dangerously ill, I’m afraid. I asked Matron to call with the latest news before term began.”

“Yes, Hilda did tell me,” Nancy’s blue eyes clouded over. Then she stopped, “Sorry, Rosalie, just to return to the meeting with Nell -”

“You’d like to make it a weekly arrangement? Of course, I can do that.” Rosalie paused, glanced at the taller woman, then decided to speak directly, “You know, Nancy, Nell will be missing Hilda a lot this term. If we can keep her posted on what’s happening here, it will make life easier for her.”

“Yes. That’s partly why I want to see her regularly. That - and getting her advice, of course. We spoke last week. She was very encouraging.”

Rosalie nodded, “She would be. I agree, if you can make use of her experience, you should. After all, she’s the one person on the Platz who knows what it’s like being Head!”

Nancy smiled, but her eyes were serious. “I’ll accept all the advice I can get.” She glanced at her colleague, “Good, well, I think that’s everything for now. Send Karen in when she comes, will you?” she added, then turned to head for the Study.

Getting there, the new Head shut the communicating door between the two rooms and heaved a sigh. “Nell’s not the only one who’ll miss Hilda,” she realised, recalling the look on her Secretary’s face as she had made this comment. She leant back abruptly against the door, and closed her eyes. “Oh God!” she sent up a wordless prayer for help, “Won’t we all!”

Dear me, aren't we impatient? Rolling Eyes

Thanks to Rosalie’s efficient organisation the morning’s interviews passed off smoothly. Despite her initial nervousness, after years of teaching Nancy was quite capable of assuming a confident air when necessary, and the domestic staff responded well to her natural authority. Even Matron Lloyd, whose plain speaking was renowned among the staff as much as the girls, kept her strictures to the minimum – much to Nancy’s relief. As an Old Girl of the school she could not be immune to “Matey’s” acerbic tongue, though she did privately question that lady’s self-assumed licence to lecture the staff as though they were irresponsible Middles! On this occasion, however, their conversation merely concerned the preparations for the start of term, and the new Head had no need to assert her authority.

Mitagessen also went peacefully. The dozen or so girls present supposed that Miss Annersley was away on business, and Nancy was grateful to such members of Staff as were present – who of course knew all about the new arrangements – for keeping up a lively chatter during the meal, thus saving her from having to lead the conversation. A few of the mistresses cast glances of veiled curiosity in her direction, but Nancy had been expecting that and was quite equal to the situation. She could not speak to Kathie, that young woman being seated further down the table, but her partner flashed her an encouraging smile which helped to buoy her spirits even further before the afternoon’s appointments.

It was thus a considerably more cheerful Nancy Wilmot who, having read Grace at the end of the meal, turned to the Senior Mistress. “I think we’re meeting now. Shall we head directly for the Study?”

“Certainly,” Ruth Derwent rose very properly at this suggestion. “Anything that is convenient for you.”

“Excellent!” Nancy nodded amicably at the rest of the Staff, then turned with her colleague toward the door of the Speisesaal. As they made their way into the corridor joining the main building and the Annexe, she glanced at her colleague. “Ruth, I hope you know how much I shall be relying upon your counsel this term. Apart from Jeanne, your teaching experience is by far the longest of any one’s at the school. I shall depend on you.”

“Indeed. I am sure age has some advantages.” The Senior Mistress’s face was devoid of expression.

Nancy’s eyebrows shot up sharply. “I would hardly call either of us ‘old’!” she said bluntly, “But any advice you can give will be welcome, naturally.”

“I shall be glad to give you any that I have.”

The two women continued their walk to the Study decorously.

I have to agree, Ruth seems like she has a slight chip on her shoulder (or maybe both). Interesting to see what will happen.

H'mmm. H'mmmm. You know, wouldn't Hilda have checked with Ruth before appointing Nancy her deputy? It would be rude and insulting to do otherwise, and Hilda is never either (except in Lesley's drabbles and only then when there's good reason for it!).

Problem is that Ruth might have been perfectly fine with Hilda - she's hardly likely to say "you should have picked me!" but then allows her resentment to take hold.

(Hilda rude and insulting in my drabbles? When????.............................................Oh, yes, then! Wink )

#67:  Author: Rachael PostPosted: Wed Jul 14, 2004 8:49 am

I think she's bound to be a little resentful - it's only natural given that she's effectively been overlooked for promotion despite being Senior Mistress
yes - the headship doesn't naturally follow the other but Nancy is ... was ... her junior so it has to rankle

However, gives Nancy a chance to show us her mettle ... and I'm sure Ruth will come round in the end ...

#68:  Author: NellLocation: London, England PostPosted: Wed Jul 14, 2004 9:23 am

And as we are so impatient, no-one will be surprised if I ask for more!!!

Agree that Ruth would have course be disappointed and resentful of Nancy being put in a position above her, it's bound to annoy. hopefully however she can show her character and not allow it to spoil the friendship. Also I'm sure Nancy can be sensitive to Ruth's feelings...

Evil Ruth Evil or Very Mad

Must admit, it's a very natural reaction and it's wonderful to see it written - if I was in Ruth's position, I think I'd be a little put-out! The only reason which is given for her not being appointed is Len's cryptic "you have to have something and Miss Derwent doesn't have it" (which I agree with, but it's hardly fair!)

Joining in the impatient calls for "more" (and you should consider it a compliment, Cathy! We're generally very patient and calm people Very Happy)

I have read challenge now so can read this.
Note the EBDism I found at the beginning.
In barbara (or overland) it says that Jo is married for 12 years.
Miss wilmot beings teaching then, at then at the beginning of challenge she is supposed to be around 30!

#76:  Author: GemLocation: Saltash, Cornwall (holidays), Aberystwyth (termtime from September) PostPosted: Thu Jul 15, 2004 7:57 pm

I was thinking that, Keren! I realised when the Saints joined the CS that Nancy was two, maybe three years younger than Joey at the time, no more than that. Jo is 21 when she has the triplets, who are seventeen, maybe eighteen (don't have a copy, so can't check) in Challenge. That would make Joey around 38/39, which would in turn make Nancy no younger than 35!

Then again, she's noted as being 29 in Challenge. I suppose 6 years isn't too big an EBDism, considering some of the other wild and wonderful ages she came up with. D'you think she decided that she wanted Nancy and Kathie to be friends, but didn't like the age gap? Or simply a case of forgetfulness?

#77:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Thu Jul 15, 2004 8:07 pm

Nancy just didn't age - another EBDism!

#78:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Thu Jul 15, 2004 8:49 pm

Wouldn't it be lovely to be a character in a book and get progressively younger as the years went by?

Thanks for that Cathy, I also feel that if Ruth is feeling resentful it's a perfectly natural reaction, but I'm sure that she will be big enough to overcome it and support Nancy, eventually. After all, it's hardly Nancy's fault that Hilda offered her the job.

#79:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:52 pm

Where does it say Nancy was 29 in Challenge? A while ago I worked out Nancy's timeline as far as poss. It went something like
-17/18 leaves school; uni?
21-graduates; works in WRNS
24/25- teacher training
25/26 -begins teaching
27/28- joins the Cs in the Oberland
35/36-Challenge

obviously these are rough and the more detailed version with the references in probably in the archives somewhere.

#80:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Fri Jul 16, 2004 6:16 am

When talking to the Trips in the first chapter, Hilda says she was not much over 30 when she took over from Mlle as Head. "Barely a year older than Miss Wilmot is now."

*I believe Hilda was actually 33 but, from 20 years later that's a reasonable assumption that 33 is not much over 30!*

#81:  Author: Catherine_BLocation: Oxford, UK PostPosted: Fri Jul 16, 2004 8:47 am

Yes, I've spent some time thinking about the ages as well!

When the Saints join the Chalet in "New", Hilary Burn is described as being the youngest of the Saints' Prees, and she is sixteen and a half. This makes Nancy no more than two years younger than Jo, probably just one year younger. Since Jo is 12 when the school starts, and "Challenge" is the 25th anniversary year, that would make Jo 37 and Nancy 36. Kathie is 27, since she was 22 when she arrived in "New Mistress".

I'm afraid that for once, it's just Hilda being mistaken (via EBD) - there's no way Nancy could have lost the years!

I wonder when Hilda dates her takeover? That would clear some anomalies. Is she referring to when she had to take over as Acting Head/Senior Mistress in 'Jo Returns' or when she actually becomes Head in New CS, a year- or two?-later?

And I agree with you about the distance, Lesley! Laughing

So nice to be back in broadband land!

As they approached the Study, Nancy's mind was working rapidly. It was evident from Ruth's behaviour that she was displeased with the new arrangements, but her rigidly polite expression did not reveal the exact reason. Was it simple outrage at being passed over, Nancy wondered, or an attack of insecurity? The new Head wished she could ask directly, but her colleague's demeanour forbade it emphatically.

Inside the room, Nancy indicated her visitor to a small table and a couple of chairs, "Let's sit down." Her words were as neutral as she could make them, for she knew the other woman would react badly to any appearance of condescension. "Ruth, thank you for your time. I know you're very busy at the moment, what with being in charge of the English department in Hilda's absence, but I particularly wanted to speak to you first. I appreciate your coming."

"My pleasure," Ruth nodded coolly.

"I'm glad to hear that," Nancy's blue eyes were serious as she regarded her guest. "This is going to be a demanding term, you know, for everyone concerned. The lead we two set will be crucial - I hope we'll be able to pull well together."

The Head of English gave a tight smile, "I hardly think that should be a problem. Hilda and I have always worked closely."

"Good!" Nancy took this assurance at face value, despite the distinct edge to the elder woman's voice; as Head she knew that it was incumbent upon her to keep the meeting constructive. She turned to the sheaf of paper that Rosalie had handed her earlier, "Now, Ruth, I'm afraid I shall be less help to you than Hilda where it comes to English lessons!" she smiled pleasantly at her visitor, "So let's stick to timetabling, if we may. Your schedule is going to be somewhat busier this term, given Hilda's absence..."

***

The interview did not last long, despite the new Head's best attempts at amiability. Ruth refused to drop her reserved manner, and did not respond to any of the openings that her colleague offered. Nancy - who disliked equivocation intensely but was constrained by circumstances - was not sorry as the discussion drew towards a close. As her guest made to leave the room, however, the younger woman's natural forthrightness came through.

"Ruth!"

The Head of English turned back, startled at the intensity of this call. "Yes?"

"Just one more thing. Look!" Nancy took a deep breath, "I know that Hilda's departure has been a shock, and it'll take us all some time to get used to the new arrangements. But her last words to me, before she left, were that she could take this job because she knew we'd all pull together." She stared at her colleague for a moment. "Please. Let's justify her confidence - in all of us."

Thank you Jennie, I had a fabulous time! Serious risk that I will bring photos with me to the SG - want someone to tell me what all the rock formations I was walking on were -
oh, hello Lesley Rolling Eyes

Had her second visitor proven as intractable as Ruth, the new Head of the Chalet School might well have resigned on the spot, and the rest of this history would not have been written. Fortunately the next knock on the door heralded the entrance of Rosalind Moore, who was wearing a broad smile on her face.

“Hello, Nancy! Are you enjoying your new apartments?” The Head of Geography walked over and gripped her friend’s hand, “Congratulations on the promotion, by the way. I haven’t had a chance to say how glad I am for you.”

“Thanks!” The seriousness on the Head’s face lifted at this greeting. The geography mistress was her closest contemporary on the staff, and the two had always got on well, being similarly straightforward by nature. Now she welcomed her guest warmly, “I have to admit it’s all been a bit of a shock, finding myself in Hilda’s shoes!”

Rosalind eyes danced, “Not expecting such a rapid promotion?” She sat down in the seat indicated, “Never mind, you’ll do an excellent job. I’m quite looking forward to the term, actually.”

Nancy considered this. “I’m not sure I am!” she said honestly, “But I dare say we’ll pull through.” She paused to eye her guest for a second, then leant forward, “I say, Rosalind, you don’t mind, do you, that it’s me got offered the post?”

“Mind?” Miss Moore took the blunt question in her stride, as Nancy had known she would. “That you’ll have a lot of vile correspondence, and won’t get to keep the job beyond the term?” She shook her head, “No thank you! You’re very welcome to the job, as far as I’m concerned.”

“Oh, nice of you to put it like that!” Nancy said dryly. “Well, thanks anyway. It’ll mean a lot to have an ally on the staff.”

“You’re very welcome,” Rosalind repeated, with a brisk nod. “This is a vindication of the young professionals on the staff, you know.”

“Ye-es,” Nancy knew what her colleague meant by this. Both women took teaching extremely seriously, and gave considerable effort to professional development within their departments, “But not everyone will like that.” She suppressed a sudden frown as she remembered the recent interview with Ruth.

The Head of Geography regarded her friend. “Don’t take it personally if they don’t,” she said slowly, “After all, changes always take some adjusting to. It would be the same for anyone following Hilda.” Rosalind thought for a moment, “Some tensions are inevitable at first, Nancy. But for my money, you’re the person with the best chance of uniting the staffroom.” She saw the continuing gravity on Nancy’s face, and changed her tone, “At the very least, I think you can count on the Geography department to support you!”

“Quite!” The Head was amused at this comment. She raised an eyebrow, “And that reminds me -”

“We’re here to talk about my work, not yours!” Rosalind supplemented. She extracted the neat timetable that the School Secretary had drawn up for her, and glanced over at her colleague. “OK, Nancy, let’s talk about arrangements. It’s going to be a busy term.”

#112:  Author: Catherine_BLocation: Oxford, UK PostPosted: Fri Jul 30, 2004 11:31 pm

The final three interviews of the day were less eventful. Jeanne de Lachenais and Sally Denny had been members of staff when Nancy herself was a schoolgirl, but neither was ambitious, and both accepted Hilda’s choice for her replacement and behaved accordingly. Kathie Robertson, though Head of St. Nicholas’s house and thereby of senior ranking within the school, was younger than Nancy and perfectly willing to recognise her leadership.

Abendessen was a riotous affair. The night before term began was always an informal occasion, the Staff enjoying their last night off-duty and the girls taking advantage of this as far as they could. Nancy knew this from long experience and did not try to tighten the reins, merely despatching the girls at the end of the meal with a smile and the reminder that the next day would be a busy one. Then, with a wistful glance at the staff who were heading off to relax in the Staffroom, she turned back towards the Head’s Annexe. The interview with Ruth Derwent was still playing on her mind, and she wanted to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the next day’s duties. She was determined that no one would be able to say that Nancy Wilmot was not giving the job her best effort, at least!

The planning took longer than she had expected, however, and it was past eleven o’clock that Nancy turned out the light in the Study and made her way to St. Therese’s House. All was silent as she entered the Staff quarters, and her spirits sank. She and Kathie usually managed to exchange words at the end of the day, but rarely so late. Nancy paused outside her partner’s room, glanced casually down the corridor, then turned the handle. The door was unlocked as always – the two women kept their doors on the latch to be able to slip into one another’s abodes with the least possible disturbance – but the room was in darkness, and the Head withdrew a muffled sigh. It appeared she would have to wait until the morning to talk over the day’s events with her companion.

Entering her own room, however, Nancy received a pleasant surprise, for Kathie was sitting cross legged in an armchair reading a book. The younger woman glanced up swiftly as the door opened, then rose to greet her partner with hands outstretched.

“So! How is the new Head of the Chalet School?”

Nancy smiled, her weariness melting suddenly away. “Very, very happy to see you!” she gave Kathie a tight hug, “Oh my dear! What a day!”

Kathie returned the embrace warmly. “Welcome back, love. Now - make yourself comfortable and tell me all about it, won’t you? Or whatever parts you care to,” she added. “Would you like some tea?”

“Thanks, I’m fine,” Nancy cast her belongings onto her divan and lowered herself to sprawl on the floor beside it, “At last! My goodness me, that feels better!”

Kathie laughed, softly so as not to disturb their neighbours, and came to sit beside her. “Had enough of being Headmistress-y?”

“And how!” Nancy lapsed into schoolgirl slang. She glanced at her companion, relieved to be able to shed all traces of formality, “You simply can’t imagine how dignified I’ve been all day, and what an effort it’s been!”

“I’m sure you carried it off alright,” her partner smiled at this remark, “You certainly looked the part at dinner, at least.”

Nancy leant back against the divan, “That’s nice to know. I felt that dozens of eyes were watching me for any mistake, to be honest!”

Kathie’s brown eyes twinkled, “Well, some were simply watching with admiration, I can assure you.” She looked at her partner affectionately, “Your head must be whirling, Nance. Tell me all about it - I'm dying to hear.”

Nancy stretched her arms out along the bed behind her, and tried to collect her thoughts. “Kathie, honestly, I’m still in shock!” she looked across at her partner with a smile, “I don’t know what I expected the job to be like, but not like this!” She concentrated, trying to put her feelings into words, “It feels as though I’m on duty all the time - I don’t think I had a single moment to myself all day! Rosalie was super at marshalling everyone, so it wasn’t that I was having to fend people off, but every single moment until Abendessen was taken up with meetings – and meetings meant being The Head. I’m simply shattered!”

Kathie was listening with interest, “And how did the interviews go? Oh, not the specifics,” she pre-empted Nancy’s comment, “I know they’re confidential. But how did you feel about doing them?”

Nancy meditated on this, “Mostly OK, I think. Interested. There’s such a lot going on in the School that I don’t know about – haven’t ever been required to. Talking to everyone today made me realise just how much it takes to make the place run.”

“For example?” her partner leant forward curiously.

“Well, domestic affairs, for instance,” Nancy was thinking aloud, “I met Karen first, you know, and after about five minutes I was simply gasping at how much work she and her staff do. Do you know that Karen manages a department of dozens? It really made me think.”

Kathie nodded, “The domestic staff don’t get noticed much, do they? I suppose it’s because their work is considered to be performed best when it’s not visible. Which is a shame, because it’s jolly hard work they do.”

“Exactly,” Nancy agreed, “And I’d never appreciated properly just how much goes on ‘below stairs’.” She gave a sudden sigh, “There’s so much to know!”

“Poor old thing!” but her companion’s eyes twinkled, “And Matey and the Heads of Department?”

“The same with Matey – so much to learn about. The teaching staff were less of a surprise, of course,” Nancy had no intention of going into details about her interview with Miss Derwent, “Rosalind was particularly supportive, which was a great boost.”

“Glad to hear it!” Kathie had always got on well with her superior in the Geography department, “She’ll be worth her weight in gold in the Staffroom – doesn’t take any nonsense, and is as straight as they come. If she says she’ll support you, she will.”

Nancy nodded, then smiled, “Actually, she said she thought I could count on her whole department!”

“Did she now?” Kathie gave a sudden grin, “Well, if my Head of Department says that, I guess I have no choice!”

Nancy laughed and put her arm around her companion, drawing her closer, “You have two Heads of Department, don’t forget!”

“Indeed!” Kathie murmured, “Isn’t it fortunate then that their orders match my own inclinations!”

ETA: No post till Tuesday as I'm going to the Proms this evening with a Nice Young Man Wink

"Actually, speaking of interviews," Nancy looked down fondly at her partner after a moment's silence, "There's one tomorrow that I'm quite concerned to get right."

"Oh?" Kathie glanced up inquiringly, then blushed as she saw the look in her friend's eyes, "Nancy, we've had start-of-term meetings before, I'm sure we'll manage!"

"Yes, but not in the Study before," Nancy replied steadily. She saw the look of consternation pass across Kathie's face, "And no, I'm not suggesting for a second that you'd take advantage - for goodness' sake, Kathie!"

The younger woman's cheeks cooled. "Sorry. I'd hate you to think I would," she said briefly.

"Seeing as you've never done it in all the years we've worked together, it hadn't even entered my mind," Nancy said calmly. "I didn't mean anything of the sort, so you can put that right out of your head." She smiled at her partner, who relaxed.

"Thanks. What did you mean, then?"

"Just this," Nancy leant over and put her hand on her companion's smaller one, her pansy-blue eyes very earnest, "Kathie, you're my partner. That comes above everything else. I want you to feel at home in the Annexe this term - especially as it's largely thanks to you that I'm there at all."

"Oh, Nance!" Kathie's expression softened visibly. "Thank you," she squeezed her friend's hand, gazing into her eyes, "That means a great deal to me."

"But," the younger woman continued after a minute's silence, "Are you saying you don't want us to meet in the Study as colleagues?"

"No," Nancy regarded her searchingly, "What I'm doing is giving you the choice, for tomorrow at least. What would be more comfortable for you? There'd be nothing difficult in arranging to meet outside the Study, you know - I'd just tell Rosalie we needed a blackboard to discuss maths."

"Right," Kathie thought about this, then glanced at her partner, "Well, if you think it's possible, I guess I'd rather we met in a form-room somewhere."

"Fine," Nancy took this in her stride, "I'll fix that up." She nodded at Kathie, "I can't promise we'll always manage to keep things separate, but I'm happy to do it at the beginning."

Kathie's eyes grew serious, "Thanks for asking, this once. But I think we'd better be as inconspicuous as possible in future - you'll be coming under a lot more scrutiny this term, you know."

"I do know." The Head looked weary all of a sudden and Kathie, checking her watch, realised with a shock that it was nearly midnight.

"Nance, it's awfully late. We should be getting to bed."

"OK, but hang on a sec," her partner put out a hand to detain her as she started to rise, "You haven't told me anything about your day. How was it?"

Kathie looked suprised, then gave a sudden smile. "Oh, nothing special. Just unpacking."

"What happened?" Nancy demanded. She knew the wicked look on her partner's face well, "Come on, Kathie, out with it!"

The younger woman gave a sudden gurgle, "One of the new girls brought snails with her!" she said blandly.

"What?!"

"In a box! Goodness knows how she managed to keep them alive on the journey, but she did. What's more, it was pure chance that I came across the creatures at all," Kathie choked with laughter at the recollection, "She'd kept them in her hand luggage, so the box was in her cubey, while all the unpacking that I was overseeing happened in the central storeroom. The imp's undoing, however, was that she left behind some articles of clothing, which I then went to deliver. And found her inspecting her collection!"

"Oh! How I wish I'd been there!" Nancy rocked with laughter, "What on earth did you say?"

"Oh, I managed to keep a straight face, and told her off pretty sharply," Kathie grinned. "I let the snails loose in the garden afterwards, though, which I thought was punishment enough, seeing it was her first week. I imagine her little playmates will tell her soon enough how lucky she was that I found them and not Matey!"

"Quite!" her partner could well imagine would Matron would have said in the same circumstances. "Who was the young scamp, by the way?"

Kathie shook her brown head with a grin, "She's new, I'm not going to give her a bad name to her Headmistress - not even off the record!" She got up, and held out her hands to Nancy, "Come on, love, it's time we both went to bed. It's going to be a long day tomorrow."

The taller woman hauled herself to her feet, and looked regretfully at her partner, "I hate the first night back, sleeping on my own."

"Well, we could always retire!" Kathie retorted, then smiled at the look of surprise on Nancy's face, "Oh, silly! You know I feel exactly the same. But short of giving up our jobs here and now, there isn't much alternative that I can see."

"I s'pose not," Nancy gave a gigantic yawn, "Oh well, thanks for coming round, anyway. It was nice to talk."

"My pleasure," Kathie gave her a hug, then turned to make for the door. "'Night, Nance, sleep well!"

"'Night, my dear!"

And despite all her cares and responsibilities, the new Head of the Chalet School fell asleep quite contented.

Absolutely superb!!

I love all the detail and the care that Nancy takes in including Kathie in the decision about where to hold her one-to-one and that she wants her to feel at home in the Annexe etc ...

And the snails episode was funny! Laughing
A good release of tension ...

I like the way you're setting the scene for the rest of the book - Nancy showing signs of weariness etc which shows it's likely to be a tough term ... she must feel very lucky to have such staunch support from the likes of Rosalind and Kathie ...

Hope you have fun at the Proms! Wink

Thank you for your patience!

Kathie Ferrars could not remember having been so jittery on the first day of term since she arrived at the Chalet School five years earlier. On that occasion her nervousness had been for herself. Fresh out of college, she had been afraid of making foolish mistakes, forgetting her pupils’ names or breaking staffroom etiquette. This time her apprehension was for Nancy, and Kathie felt that it was twice as hard when she could only stand by and watch her partner go through her ordeal. That day the majority of the girls would return; Nancy would have to set the lead for the term in her welcoming address, and Kathie knew that however supportive she had been over the last few days, however frequently they had discussed Nancy’s opening speech – both women were agreed that she should keep it as down-to-earth as possible – it was the new Head who would face the music, and face it alone.

It was fortunate for the young geography mistress that the day was a busy one, at least. In addition to her start of term interview with the Head – which, thanks to the previous evening’s discussion, went as smoothly as could be hoped – she was fully occupied in the morning in Ste Therese. At Mittagessen she was assailed by Rosalind Moore, who asked her to help prepare some teaching materials for the next day’s lessons. Had Kathie been less distracted by the girls' imminent arrival, she might have stopped to wonder why her superior in the geography department needed any assistance. Miss Moore was renowned for her formidable organisation and typically prepared for the beginning of term well in advance. At this juncture, however, Kathie was all too glad to have something to take her mind off the evening’s events. Throwing herself into her chores with a will, she managed to push her anxieties about Nancy to the back of her mind - for a few hours, at any rate.

At five o’clock the staff gathered for Kaffee and Kuchen in the staffroom. As Kathie came through the door a few minutes late the conversation lulled momentarily, and the Chalet School’s chief dramatic producer was quite acute enough to realise that her colleagues had been discussing Nancy’s promotion. Rising to the occasion, she smiled at the dozen or so mistresses present and joined the conversation with every appearance of ease.

“Talking about the new arrangements? There’s a lot to take in, isn’t there!”

“Yes, we were just wondering how Nancy was looking forward to the start of term,” Peggy Burnett welcomed her a friendly smile. “You’re close to her, do you know how she’s feeling? It must be awfully daunting, taking on a big job like that.”

“I’m sure it is!” Kathie cast her senior a smile, “Sorry, Peggy, but I’ve hardly caught sight of her today. Your guess is as good as mine.”

Linda Stone, responsible for teaching the juniors, looked over at her, “Did Hilda tell her much in advance, Kathie? The news has come out of the blue for most of us.”

The geography mistress shook her head, “As far as I know, Miss Annersley told us as soon as she’d agreed it with Nancy. I was back on the Platz already so heard it from her directly, but I believe she wrote the same day to everyone who wasn’t present.”

Julie Berne nodded, “Me, I received a letter at my brother’s house in Paris nearly three weeks ago.”

“There you go. And it was only a month ago that the Head was invited to join the Commission. She and Nancy have been as surprised by this as any of us, I believe,” Kathie nodded easily at Linda, then changed the subject. “I say, has Rosalie been in yet? I haven’t heard anything about the new girls yet, except those in my form. Are there many?”

Jeanne de Lachenais answered her question and the discussion moved on to the nationalities of the various new girls. Kathie sipped her coffee quietly, adding the odd comment here and there, but generally keeping a low profile. It was inevitable that the staff would see her a source of information about Nancy; the close friendship between the two women was well known, and most of their colleagues knew they had spent this summer together, as indeed they did every vacation. All the same, Kathie was resolved not to become an informal channel of communication between the staff and the Head. The only way for Nancy to win the staff’s confidence would be to communicate with them directly, and Kathie knew it would come across badly if a still junior member of staff was seen as having privileged access to the Study.

Such thoughts preoccupied her throughout Kaffee, and it came as a shock when, all too soon, her colleagues began to stand up and leave the staffroom. The coaches were arriving!

Hmm - life in my new house proving strangely distracting - good company means I seem to be posting after midnight all too regularly! Confused

The domestic staff had excelled themselves for the first meal of the term, but it is to be feared that Kathie barely tasted it. While the girls were enjoying the delicately seasoned cold meat and dainty salad, followed by creamy apricot compote, Nancy’s partner was seated at the far end of the staff table, forcing down her food and trying to chat casually to her neighbours. Though the staff at the Chalet School were a friendly bunch who did not stand on ceremony as a rule, there was a tendency at meals for mistresses to sit according to age and seniority. On this occasion the staff table was even more hierarchical than usual. When Hilda Annersley was presiding Nancy and Kathie generally sat together, thus encouraging the rest of the staff to mix. Today the new Head, fully aware of the awkward situation with Ruth, had made certain that the Senior Mistress was sitting at her right hand; Jeanne de Lachenais was on her left and the rest of the Heads of Department were nearby. This unusual distance from her partner added to Kathie’s discomfiture, though she kept up a steady chatter with Sharlie Andrews. That young woman had just arrived back with the coaches and had plenty of holiday tales to relate to her friend. Kathie was glad of this, for it saved her the effort of talking much.

Prayers followed, bringing a fresh surprise. As Headmistress, Nancy was leading the Protestants in worship, and Kathie was taken aback by how she reacted to her partner’s voice repeating the verses, rather than Miss Annersley’s. Though the Abbess was renowned for her beautiful, deep tones, for Kathie her partner’s voice represented Love. As Nancy began the younger woman was almost disoriented by hearing her partner’s private, gentle tones speaking the simple words of prayer in public. Then her voice brought their meaning closer to Kathie than the Head herself had ever done, and she found comfort and reassurance in the well-known words. By the time the blessing was spoken and the Hall was waiting for the arrival of the Catholic girls and staff, half of Kathie’s anxieties had already been lifted.

Nancy’s welcoming address was a success. At her first joke, Kathie, who had been willing her friend on with all her might, heaved a silent sigh of relief and settled back into her seat to listen properly. The girls were on side now and Nancy, a sufficiently fluent speaker though not as eloquent as Hilda Annersley, was well in her stride. The new Head kept her speech deliberately light. She and Kathie had agreed that she should stress the continuity of School traditions as much as possible, despite Miss Annersley's absence. As Nancy began to describe the details of the School’s routine for the sake of the new girls, Kathie marvelled inwardly at her companion’s calm demeanour. The Nancy Wilmot speaking now was a leader who naturally inspired confidence in her listeners, and Kathie wondered at this assured public figure. She felt, simultaneously, fiercely proud of her partner and yet almost awed by Nancy’s outward confidence. Then, as the new Head finished her speech and the younger girls turned to march from the Hall, the tiniest flicker of relief crossed Nancy’s face, and Kathie saw the woman she knew so well. “Way to go, Nancy!” she projected silently to her partner, “You did it, my love. You really did!”

I was thinking that myself, Ellie, but I remembered that during Alt Romance, Nancy was the one who found it difficult to hide her emotions... also, Kathie is very much the actress of the two. Should be interesting to see how difficult they find it to keep everything hidden this term though.

Last post until the weekend - sorry Crying or Very sad Pressures of work mean my evenings are not my own this week... at least people who give money to Oxfam can feel reassured that they're getting their money's worth...!

The younger girls marched out of the Hall while the Seniors remained to clear the chairs away for dancing. As the Staff turned to leave the Dais and make their way to the staffroom, Kathie observed Rosalie leaning across to murmur something to the new Head, who looked surprised, then nodded, “All right – I’ll just leave my gown in the Study, then join you all.” As Kathie watched, her partner extricated herself from the crowd of mistresses who were quietly congratulating her on her speech, and made her way across the Hall. Pausing only to welcome the new Senior, Evelyn Ross, Nancy slipped quietly out of the door and turned towards the Annexe.

The Staff walked in twos and threes towards the staffroom, looking forward to a final evening of relaxation before lessons started the next day. The Prefects could largely be relied upon to take charge for the rest of the evening, though the mistresses would be on call in an emergency. Kathie followed the throng, chatting lightly to Sharlie Andrews on one side and Deborah Smith on the other. Then, as they neared the staffroom, she uttered a murmured excuse about going to wash her hands, and peeled away from her colleagues. She walked quietly to the Splasheries reserved for the Staff, then, having checked that no one was in eyesight, turned to make her own way to the Study.

“Nancy?” The geography mistress gave the softest tap on the door to the Head’s private quarters. There was no response, and she hesitated before turning the handle gently and entering the Study. Stepping quietly across the carpet in the empty room she peered into the Head’s salon. Nancy was there, standing silently at the French windows in deep contemplation. Kathie began to back away, not wanting to interrupt, but her partner heard and turned to extend a hand, inviting Kathie to join her.

The two women stood together a minute later, gazing out over the school grounds. There was no need for words. Kathie’s face clearly showed her relief at her partner’s success that evening, while Nancy’s arms clasped tightly around her expressed her welcome. Understanding that her companion was coming down from leading the school for the first time, the younger woman leant back into Nancy’s embrace, knowing that her presence helped her partner return to earth. Nancy, for whom the enormity of her position was sinking in, knew she did not have to explain what was going through her mind. The lovers shared their thoughts and feelings so instinctively that, at that moment, neither could have told where her own ended and the other’s began.

Sorry... got a bit waylaid! Embarassed

“So, what are the key points we discussed earlier?” the Head of Maths looked questioningly at Ted Grantley, who was standing in front of the class and attempting to draw a most intractable graph.
“Um – put in asymptotes?” Ted thought for a moment, then sketched two rather wobbly lines. “But how do I know where the graph goes around them?”
Margot Maynard’s hand shot up, “Shouldn’t we look at what happens as x tends to infinity?”
Her classmate frowned at the blackboard, then looked at the maths mistress, “But I know it approaches the asymptote,” she objected, “the problem is I don’t know where from – above or below?”
“Look at what’s happening to the gradient,” the maths mistress prompted her.
A knock at the door of VIa’s form-room interrupted these deliberations, and one of the school’s numerous domestic staff entered the room. “Pardon, Fraulein Wilmot, but the Head is wanted in the Study.”
“Is she?” Nancy, immersed in teaching, for a moment couldn’t think why she was being told this. Then, hearing the smothered splutters from her class, she came to her senses, “Oh gosh, that’s me! Sorry Mitzi, I’ll come right away. Excuse me please, girls,” she turned to the responsible young ladies who made up the school’s top form, “I’ll be as quick as I can. In the meantime, get on with the next three questions - you may discuss them if you get stuck.” She brushed her hands hurriedly to remove the chalk, and followed the maid from the room.

The sixth formers giggled as Miss Wilmot’s footsteps passed out of hearing.
“Poor Willy! She must be hard pressed if she’s forgotten her new job already,” Francie Wilford grinned at the small group that made up the VIa mathematicians.
“Oh, she’s only been in the post a couple of days,” Ted said leniently, settling back into her seat. “I say, what kind of Head do you think she’ll make?”
Her comrades considered this. “Good enough, surely,” Carmela Walther said with some doubt in her tones nevertheless. “It is only for one term. She will just follow Miss Annersley’s instructions, nicht war?”
“I do not know,” Marie Zinkel said doubtfully. “She does not have quite the composure of the Head.”
“Rot!” Margot looked up from the problems, with which she had dutifully been wrestling up to this point. “You heard her in Hall yesterday, didn’t you? No lack of confidence there, Marie!”
Francie eyed the youngest Maynard triplet thoughtfully, “I don’t know, it must have been daunting enough. Stepping into the Abbess’s shoes can’t be easy.”
“Exactly!” Margot pressed the point, “But she got through all right, didn’t she? I’d say she began like she’ll continue – in style.”
The Second Prefect glanced at the youngest triplet consideringly, wondering just how much the grown ups on the Platz had laid it upon the Maynards to back up the new Head. “Come to that, it’s our job to support her,” she observed slowly. “It’s not going to be an easy term without the Head – the real Head, I mean – being here.” She caught the grateful flash in Margot’s eye and nodded slightly.
Marie looked at the two of them uncertainly, then shrugged her shoulders. “I expect you are right. And at least we have a nice replacement for Miss Annersley. Miss Wilmot is a jolly teacher, no?”
“Easy going as they come, but never lets you overstep the line,” Francie assented. “Willy’s a sport!”
Margot grinned at them, “Well, I’m glad we’ve settled that. And now, do you think we could get back to work? I’d like to have made some progress by the time the Head returns!” And she turned back to her exercise book with a display of industry that soon persuaded the others to follow suit.

Thank you, Cathy! Glad to see this back!

It's easy to see Nancy finding it hard at first to switch gears from asymptotes to *whoops!* headship. Interesting that Francie would guess there'd been pressure on the trips to support Nancy -- and nice to see Margot out front for once.

The Head was out of the classroom for nearly ten minutes, and even the slower members of the class had solved at least one of the problems by the time she returned. Margot Maynard, who had all her family’s share of brains where mathematics was concerned, had finished all of them, while Marie Huber, whose mathematical ability matched her musical talent, was not far behind. At Nancy’s bidding the rest put down their pens thankfully and sat back to listen to her exposition on conic sections. Though they had covered the topic the previous term, the summer holidays had left some of the girls rather hazy on how to put the theory into practice when sketching graphs. Aware that the end of the year would bring public examinations, they now paid close attention to the mistress’s explanations.

As the bell rang, heralding the end of the first day’s lessons, Nancy smiled at her pupils. “Well done, girls! You’ve remembered a great deal from last year, all told. It won’t take us long to move on to fresh material.” She caught the expression on the Second Prefect’s face, and added with a chuckle, “Which shouldn’t be a cause for despondency!”
Ted, who hadn’t realised that her grimace was visible from the front of the class, turned red as the class laughed at this sally. Then she recovered herself and grinned at the mistress, “Oh well, I wouldn’t really want to repeat last year’s work. It would be awfully dull!”
“Glad you agree,” Nancy said blandly. “Now gather your books, please, everyone. We’ll continue with this on Monday.” She remained at her table as the girls began to file out, pulling her own papers together. As the last girl made towards the door, she looked up. “Henriette, would you stay for a minute? I’d like a word.”

--

Henriette Zendl, a brown-haired girl from the Alsace region, paused at this request. “Miss Wilmot?” A clever but retiring girl, she clutched her pile of books tightly to herself. To the mistress’s experienced eye she seemed rather more subdued than usual.
“Please, take a seat,” Nancy motioned her to a desk. “Now, there’s nothing to be concerned about, at least on my part, so you needn’t look like that!” she cast a pleasant smile at the sixth-former, “I just want to have a quick chat about your work for the year. I take it you are still intending to apply to the Sorbonne for mathematics?” She looked at her pupil inquiringly.
Henriette looked relieved. “I – yes, Miss Wilmot. That is, if you think I stand a chance of being accepted!”
Nancy smiled at her again, “As good a chance as anyone I’ve taught in the last five years. There’s no guarantee, of course, so I hope you’ll apply to other universities as well.” She regarded the girl thoughtfully, “Are your parents happy for you to do that?”
“Ye-es.” Henriette’s face, which had cleared at the mistress’s initial words, clouded over again. “At least, I hope they will be.”
Nancy caught her expression. “My dear, this is a matter for you and your parents to decide,” she said gently. “But if it would help, I would gladly discuss it with your mother and father. They should know what a talented daughter they have.”
The girl flushed, and twisted her fingers, “Thank you.” She was clearly apprehensive about something though, and as the silence lengthened, Nancy wondered whether she should break it. Then, just as she was about to speak, Henriette looked up at her. “Miss Wilmot, it’s just – I don’t know – I’m afraid that - ” her face was very anxious, “My parents wanted me to be a prefect this year. I-I don’t think I would have made a good one,” she added hurriedly, dropping her eyes again. “But they may be disappointed. They will let me apply to the Sorbonne because it is prestigious, but – but I am not sure about the other universities. I am afraid they will think I do not deserve to spend more time in college.” Her voice trailed off unhappily.

Eek! I knew that once I started writing this again I wouldn't be able to concentrate on my work! And I've got a nasty paper due on Friday Confused (But what the heck... one has to enjoy life...)

“I see,” Nancy’s face was thoughtful as she took this in. Then, seeing how miserable Henriette was, she leant forward with sympathetic eyes. “My dear, please don’t look so upset. I’m glad you’ve told me what’s been bothering you - and I’m sure that between us we can work something out.”

“Th-thank you!” The girl’s face lost some of its anxiety.

“Now,” Nancy continued in matter-of-a-fact tones, “On the question of being a prefect. I hope you know, at least, that it doesn’t matter.” She cast a sudden smile at her pupil, “Henriette, some of the most gifted people this school has turned out haven’t been prefects. You’ve heard of Nina Rutherford, I expect? Well, she wasn’t a prefect when she was in the Sixth.”

“Really?” Henriette looked up in surprise. “But everyone still remembers her!”

“They certainly do!” Nancy agreed, “Nina is making a name for herself professionally. But she wasn’t a leader in her year – and I don’t think she’d have wanted to be a prefect, even if she’d been asked. Her heart was in her music.”

The girl was digesting this slowly, “You mean that people have different talents?”

“Of course,” the mistress said simply. “And they enjoy different things. Nina’s first love was her music. Yours may be your studies. Some people come naturally to leading others.” The Head pro tem smiled to herself suddenly, remembering how far she had been from this in her own days as a prefect, “Oh, and Henriette! These things change over time.”

Her pupil smiled at her shyly. “I think I see what you mean.” She paused for a moment, “You know, Miss Wilmot, I don’t think my parents really mind about me being a prefect, in their hearts. It’s just that they wish me to be more confident and – and outgoing. If I’d been made a prefect, that would have proved that I’d become the person they wanted me to be, I think.” She glanced at the maths mistress, “Does that make sense?”

“Yes, it does,” Nancy said, rather surprised at this insight. She smiled sympathetically at the girl, “Henriette, no one is born with confidence – we all develop it over time. But knowing what you want is a big first step. Maybe telling your parents how much you care about your education will show them that you do have confidence in something.”

Henriette blushed, “Perhaps. I do want to continue my studies, honestly, Miss Wilmot!”

“And I’ll try to talk to them next week. Is that a deal?” Nancy smiled as her pupil nodded. “Good! And now we’d better hurry along to the Speissesaal. I’m afraid we’re already late for Kaffee und Kuchen, and it’s my job to set a good example this term!” She ushered the girl out into the corridor before her. “Off you go, then. Let’s see which of us can get to Hall first!”

“Henriette Zendl?” Kathie asked queryingly, sitting on her pretty divan that evening. “I don’t even think I’d recognise her! What does she look like, Nance?”

Nancy smiled, “Oh, tallish, slim, brown hair. You’d recognise her if you saw her,” she sipped her cup of cocoa, “A distinctive face – not pretty, but very expressive.”

“I think I know the one you mean,” Kathie looked rather doubtful. “She only came recently, didn’t she?”

“A couple of years ago,” her partner assented. “Actually, I don’t know why her name didn’t come up when we were discussing the prefects last term, though I didn’t say so today, naturally.” She looked meditative, “Henriette’s quiet, of course, but then so are some of the others – Louise Grunbaum or Kirsten Johanssen, to name a couple.”

Kathie thought about this. “But Louise has got herself known for her artwork, that helps. And Kirsten is one of the best lacrosse players we have. That gives them a pull, doesn’t it?”

“Well, Henriette’s jolly good at maths – and sciences,” the Head of Maths defended her protégé, “Why shouldn’t that count as much as art?”

Kathie rolled her eyes, “Oh please! You’re not serious!”

Nancy laughed at her friend’s scornful expression. “Well, not entirely,” she admitted. “All the same, I don’t see why running around a muddy field should make someone so popular!”

“Ah,” the younger woman looked complacent, “But it does, you know!” She fended off easily the cushion that her partner propelled at her, “Face it, Nance. The average schoolgirl cares much more about games than lessons.”

The Head pro tem grinned at her, “It’s easy to see why you’re so well-liked, then.”

“Oh, quite,” Kathie said smugly. “Well, I started early, you know. I chose to be Games Pree rather than Head Girl in my day, did I ever tell you that?” She chuckled at Nancy’s surprise. “It’s quite true! Our Head offered me both posts, and I went for the former. Jolly good decision, too – much less responsibility, but quite the same kudos.”

“I might have known!” Nancy’s face was resigned. “How on earth did I end up with such an energetic companion?”

“Sheer good fortune,” Kathie laughed, but with her friend rather than at her. “And what were you like as a prefect, my love?” she inquired in return.

“Um, well,” Nancy cast her mind back several years further than her partner, “Rather lazy, if you must know. Gillian and Hilary did most of the work in my day.” She smiled at the recollection, “It feels like an awfully long time ago.”

Kathie caught the look, “People do change a lot, don’t they? How strange to think that you followed those two then. And now they’re married women and you’re running the school.”

Nancy glanced at her affectionately. “Yes. And I rather think I got the best deal of all.”

Helloooo,
Catherine - I absolutely love your writing, both Alternative Romance & Challenge. Kathie's my favourite character and she and Nancy go so well together! It's particularly good seeing the other staff develop as characters, and having realistic and belivable reactions instead of 'hunky-dory' ones the whole time aka EBD.
However, you are also responsible for me going to bed three hours later than normal last night and being very tired at work all day *glares*. Still, I'll have to take responsibility for my own actions and am thinking about forgiving you as your story is so fantastic Wink

*waves to all the other mad fans* - I can't believe that I've been a Chalet School fan all these years and have only just found this site!

Thanks mg99, Tomahawk & everyone else who has managed to catch up on all the Alternates at once - I'm impressed and touched!

Kathie smiled at her friend, then changed the subject. “Tell me your plans for the weekend, Nance.”

The Head gave a slight sigh, “Social duties – with an emphasis on the duties!” She glanced at her partner, “I’m sorry, Kathie. It would have been nice to spend an afternoon together.”

“Never mind that!” the younger woman said lightly. “We’ve just had a whole month with one another. Tell me what you’re doing instead.”

Nancy smiled at her gratefully. “Half a dozen interviews with the Staff on Saturday. That’s the last of them, thank goodness! Staff meeting in the evening. Tea at St Mildred’s on Sunday, and dinner at Freudesheim in the evening. Rosalie’s joining me for that,” she added as an afterthought.

Kathie leant against her friend comfortably. “Tea with Nell? Looking for some advice?”

“Nothing in particular,” Nancy replied cautiously. “It hasn’t been long enough to meet any real problems yet.” She thought fleetingly of Ruth Derwent, then dismissed the image from her mind; neither Kathie nor Nell would know of that lady’s behaviour if she could help it. “She and Hilda usually meet after church on Sundays, you know.”

“Yes.” Kathie considered this, then shot her companion a warning glance. “You won’t be able to replace Hilda, you know. Not for Nell.”

“Not planning to try,” Nancy replied briefly. “But I can tell her what’s happening here, at least.”

“Fair enough,” Kathie nodded. She looked up at her partner, “I daresay you don’t need reminding that you’re not Hilda.”

“I don’t!” Nancy gave a rather weary chuckle. “I’m conscious of it every minute. When Rosalie looks at me expectantly for Words of Wisdom. When everyone listens for a beautiful voice to say Grace before meals.” She heaved a sigh. “The only time I managed to forget about being Head, I got interrupted halfway through the class!”

Kathie laughed sympathetically. “Well, if it’s any consolation, I like you better as you!” Nancy’s arm tightened around her waist, and she settled herself contentedly. “You’d be surprised how readily people are accepting you as Head, you know. I was talking to Peggy about organising some lacrosse matches on Saturday, and she said ‘It’ll depend on what Nancy says the girls are to do’. And I heard Jeanne tell Julie Berne that she should bring something up at Staff Meeting on Saturday, because ‘Only Nancy can approve that.’” Kathie grinned at her partner’s rather flushed expression. “No need to look like that, my love. It’s all to the good.”

Awww. lovely. I've just read this right through and have gone back to the archives for Alt Romance and just love it - was too distracted to do any work until I finished it. I've often wondered if EBD would have liked to write this, though obviously she couldn't!

If it's not too greedy to ask for more .....

BTW is there something between Alt Romance and this? And if so where do I find it, pretty please?

Kathie smiled at the look on Nancy’s face. Then her own expression became one of surprise. “For goodness’ sake!” she gave her partner a little push, “Where’s your sense of propriety?”

Nancy chuckled unrepentantly, “Alas! It all seems to have been used up.”

“Well, you just behave for a moment. It’s my turn to talk!” the younger woman looked as reproving as she could. “I’ve got something to ask you, Nance.”

Nancy settled back on the divan with a mock sigh. “Oh, all right! What is it?”

Kathie grinned at this spectacle of resignation. “It’s about the weekend.” She looked at Nancy to check that she was really listening. “I was talking to Peggy and Davida today, and we came up with a plan. Only I wanted to talk to you about it first.”

“Oh?” The elder woman regarded her inquiringly. She propped herself up on her elbow and turned her attention to what her companion was saying. “Fire away, then.”

“Well, it’s like this,” Kathie began slowly. “You know our car has been clunking lately? I took a look at the engine last week, but couldn’t make out what was wrong. So I mentioned it to Davida today, thinking she might have some idea about motors. From physics, you know.”

“And did she?” Nancy looked sceptical. “That sort of thing isn’t part of science degrees, as far as I know.”

Her friend shook her head. “That’s what Davida said. It isn’t for physicists, at least, though possibly engineers. She couldn’t help. But then Peggy had an idea,” Kathie paused for effect. “She said we could take lessons from a mechanic she knows in Interlaken!”

“What?” Nancy was too surprised for politeness. She sat up and eyed her partner in astonishment. “Did she mean it?”

Kathie gave a slight giggle. “I’m not sure how serious she was. But Davida and I rather liked the idea. And – well – to cut a long story short, we called Herr Fischer and asked. And after a while – though he took a bit of persuading – he agreed to teach us.”

“You mean you harassed him into it?” A trace of the headmistress came into Nancy’s tones.

“Oh, no!” Kathie said hastily. She glanced at her partner earnestly, “Honestly, we didn’t! It was more that he couldn’t imagine why some ‘well-spoken ladies’ – I’m quoting him - should want to learn about motors. But when he understood that we were English -”

Nancy groaned. “ – he concluded that you were naturally mad, I suppose!”

“More or less,” Kathie agreed easily. “But I think he saw our point, as well, Nance. We really would find it useful. And he said he could teach us about different types of engines – not just cars, but boats, and all that kind of thing.”

“Kathie Ferrars, you never cease to amaze me!” Nancy gazed at her partner, digesting this information for a moment. “And this – Herr Fischer, you said? Would he come up to the Platz to teach you?”

Kathie shook her head, “No - his workshop is in Interlaken, after all. We’d have to go to him.” She looked at her partner with sudden anxiety. “Peggy and Davida talked to Rosalie about it. It wouldn’t be very often, of course, because of duties. But Rosalie said that every other fortnight would be fine.”

Nancy sat back and looked at her thoughtfully. “You’re not asking my opinion officially, are you?”

Kathie shook her head again, “No, it’s our free time. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t go down to Interlaken if we want.” She paused. “I know it’s not quite conventional to spend our time studying mechanics, but I don’t think it would really bring the school into disrepute. Especially not if there were three of us!”

Nancy’s blue eyes danced, “OK, I don’t disagree. Though I think I’d better mention it to Hilda, just in case!” She looked at her partner with interest. “So you’re you asking my personal opinion?”

“Yes.” Kathie hesitated for a second. “Nance, it would be awfully fun! And – well – you’re going to be busy so much of the time. We probably won’t be able to go away at weekends like usual.” Her forehead creased suddenly, “But then, I want to be free when you are, too. I wouldn’t have to go with Peg and Davida every time, of course, but it would be something of a commitment.” She looked at her partner anxiously. “What do you think, Nance?”

Nancy looked at her partner steadily for a moment, then gave an inward sigh. This question was far more important than mechanics classes. She searched for the best way to put her answer.

“Kathie,” she reached to touch her companion’s hand, “Do you remember when Hilda offered me this job?”

The younger woman looked surprised, “Of course I do! It was less than a month ago.”

Nancy smiled at her, but her eyes were serious. “Good. And do you remember what you said, when I asked your opinion?”

Kathie considered for a moment. “I think I didn’t want to push you one way or the other.” She glanced at Nancy, slightly confused, “Why?”

Her partner pressed her hand, “Because you let me make my decision according to what was best for me. Don’t you think I should do the same?”

Kathie turned pink. “My dear, it’s hardly the same kind of question.”

“It’s exactly the same. Oh yes, it is!” as her companion began to protest, “Look, Kathie! You didn’t let your own feelings get in the way of my decision; you were prepared to support whatever decision I made. And you trusted – at least, this is my guess! – that whatever I did choose, I’d have considered the impact on our relationship. Isn’t that so?”

“Well – yes!” her friend nodded.

Nancy looked at her queryingly, “So tell me how this is different.”

Kathie’s brows drew together. “Nance, I can see what you mean. But – but – it is different, I think.” She paused before explaining, “You see, when I’m wondering what to do with my weekends, I’m already thinking in the context of the decision that you made.” She glanced at her partner, “Nance, I did let you make up your own mind on the Headship. But that involved quite a conscious decision on my part to be willing to accommodate whatever you chose.”

Nancy gave an audible sigh. “Kathie, I’m always going to be older than you,” she said simply. “And my responsibilities will always tend to be greater, at least while we’re both working. I can’t expect you always to fit in with what my choices – it wouldn’t be fair.”

“We’re not talking about ‘always’, we’re talking about now,” her friend objected.

Nancy shook her head, “I don’t agree. What we do now will affect what we do later.” She could see Kathie opening her mouth to dispute this, “Please, Kathie.” The younger woman fell silent. “There are so few things that I can offer you, compared to – to what a man could.” Her voice grew very gentle. “Independence is one. Please don’t wish it away.”

*giggle*

Cathy - that was wonderful, thank you!!
I agree with Lesley - it's lovely to see how caring they are towards each other - always thoughtful and considerate ... Love
BTW - Nancy's concerns aside, I think the one thing they do have as an advantage over male/female couples is there absolute understanding of each other and their ability to communicate from the same platform (many male/female couples regularly suffer from the Men are from Mars & Women are from Venus syndrome Rolling Eyes )

Anyway, while you're on a roll ... MORE ... would be much apreciated! Mr. Green

Since you ask so nicely... Rolling Eyes

Kathie sat curled up on the bed, hugging her knees. She looked even smaller than usual. When she spoke, her tones were defensive.

“I feel rather – rebuffed.”

Nancy observed her partner silently, knowing that it was important for Kathie to find her response. After a moment the younger woman blurted out,

“Nance, I was just being realistic! Our time is limited this term. I could perfectly well join the other two at their classes next term, and not have missed anything – or hardly anything.” She met her lover’s eyes. “I just want to be there for you. We’re partners!”

The older woman regarded her with strange compassion. “Kathie, I’m a very fortunate woman. To have a beautiful, talented, energetic young woman prepared to make sacrifices for me.” She reflected for a moment. “I won’t dispute that partnership involves compromise. We both know it does. But you’re a very giving person, Kathie. I mustn’t abuse that by taking all the time.”

Kathie flushed, and looked rather vulnerable. Her words came out very quietly. “I love you, Nancy. I can’t help wanting to support you.”

Nancy shifted to sit behind her friend, and took her very gently in her arms. “Try to believe that I feel the same. I want you to be everything you can be, Kathie.”

There was a slow exhalation as the smaller woman leant back into her partner’s embrace. “Sorry. I’ll try.”

Nancy clasped her tighter. “I’ll hold you to that.” She felt Kathie relax in her arms. “You always seem so capable and confident, my love. But you shouldn’t use that just to reassure me.”

--

The two women sat in silence for some time. Finally, as Nancy began to release her partner, she felt Kathie’s hand detain her own.

“Please. Would you stay?”

For the first time ever, Nancy did.

My (28 year old) housemate went yesterday - nominally as a steward, but she doesn't seem to have done much work, unless you count chatting up cute students as work. Only a small snippet - hopefully more this evening!

“Morning all!” Kathie Ferrars was sparkling with energy the next day as she joined her colleagues for Fruhstuck. Taking a place three seats down from the head of the table, she beamed at her neighbours, “Isn’t it a gorgeous day?”

“It is,” Rosemary Charlesworth, opposite, laughed at this picture of enthusiasm. “No need to ask if you slept well.”

“Like a log,” Kathie said promptly. “And I simply leapt out of bed this morning,” she glanced mischievously at Nancy from beneath her eyelashes. The head of mathematics barely managed not to choke at this pronouncement. Her partner - always a deep sleeper – had only been roused with a cold sponge that morning, and the consequent leap had been spectacular!

“I say, Vida!” the geography mistress leant across the table, once they were seated after Grace. “Are we all set for going to Interlaken today?”

Her colleague from the science department looked pleased, “Oh, are you definitely coming? Yes, we’ve agreed it with Rosalie. Peggy’s going to drive.”

“Good egg!” Kathie grinned at that young woman, who was at Davida’s side as usual. She liked Peggy a great deal, and spent several evenings a week helping her to coach hockey or lacrosse. “I can’t wait to get started with the lessons, can you?”

Peggy smiled at this zeal. “No, they should be good fun,” she agreed. “Ernst Fischer is a nice chap. I think he’ll be a good teacher, too.”

“Splendiferous!” Kathie bounced happily at this comment. She cast her eyes along the table, “I say, Sharlie, can you sling the marmalade over, old thing?”

Nancy, who had been observing her companion’s bubbling cheerfulness with a smile, gave a rather amused cough. “Ahm! Don’t let the girls hear you please, Kathie!”

The younger woman assumed a penitent expression. “Oh, I’m so sorry – Miss Annersley!” A splutter went round the table at this jibe, as the staff knew that the new Head, unlike the Abbess, often spoke slang with the best of them. Nancy merely smiled, however, and turned the subject good-naturedly.

#304:  Author: Rachael PostPosted: Mon Oct 11, 2004 8:58 am

LOL!! ROFL

Off topic... I just went to a university event and somebody asked me if I was a fresher! Shocked

The atmosphere at the staff table was more relaxed than at any time since Miss Annersley’s unexpected departure. The less perspicacious members of staff attributed this merely to its being the weekend, but the more thoughtful noted that Nancy’s habitual equanimity had returned to replace the rather consciously-assumed dignity of the past few days. Conversation flowed easily at the table, with Kathie’s lively banter playing well against her partner’s placid good humour. Every mistress at the table felt that the mood was lighter, whether or not she recognised the cause, and was relieved.

Rosalind Moore, sitting halfway down the table, nodded to herself as she observed the interaction between the two women. She was satisfied by the reappearance of Kathie’s usual animation, for as head of geography she felt a professional responsibility for her junior colleague. While Rosalind had welcomed Nancy’s appointment as Head, she had retained a sense of concern for that lady’s partner. Kathie was an exceptionally level-headed young woman, but if she had a weakness, in her head of department’s view, it was that she always put Nancy’s concerns before her own.

The elder woman contemplated this not for the first time, then gave an inward shrug. It was probably inevitable that Kathie should bear such professional admiration for her friend, given the difference in their ages and experience. All the same, Rosalind thought as she speared her bacon, that was no reason why the younger woman should sacrifice her own well-being. She glanced down the table, and relaxed suddenly. Just for that moment, Nancy’s regard was on her partner, and the Head’s contentment was clear. Rosalind was not the only one who wanted the best for Kathie.

Does she know at this point though, I know in Alt Romance she makes it obvious she's guessed sometime before N&K tell her and Nell, but wasn't sure if she knew at this time, 'cos the scene at the end of Alt Romance where they are told is after this...sorry slightly convoluted, hope it makes sense!

In Alt Rom - not the epilogue, Hilda makes it clear she knows at the play, then later when she warns N & K before entering her own Study! Laughing

I was re-reading AltRom this morning and I got the idea that Joan had been pretty general in her b*itchiness in the staff room, it just depends on who chooses to believe that there might be something between N&K.

Catherine, this is wonderful - lovely description of N&K's relationship. Also concerned we could be heading for a cliff. Is Joan likely to cause more trouble - or did Kathie successfully frighten her in Alt Rom? (I actually feel a bit sorry for Joan - are you likely to redeem her, Catherine?)
Looking forward to the next installment! Smile

And Kathy thinks back to years of walk duties, half term duties and free week-ends 'coincidently' scheduled to coincide - and Rosalie does all of those lists - so she must have had a pretty good idea.

And I always got the impression that Joan Bertram had been placated by her holiday with Mabel.

I'm amazed at the total recall of who knows what!
One more perspective for you...
ETA: sorry the updates have been intermittent this week but I got up at 5am to prepare work presentations on Wednesday and 4.30am today - not much time for human existence!

Sharlie Andrews, sitting just across from Kathie, was also pleased to witness her friend’s exuberance that morning. It had struck her the previous day that her colleague had been rather more serious than usual during the beginning of term events, and the junior English mistress knew her friend well enough to guess the reason. Only concern about Nancy ever preoccupied her like that. Still, Sharlie acknowledged fairly to herself, Nancy was also the reason for Kathie’s usual cheerfulness. Even before they had become a couple – she didn’t know exactly when this had happened, but it certainly hadn’t been until the summer term of Kathie’s first year in the Oberland – the head of maths had been a great force for good in the younger woman’s life.

It was hard to imagine now just how shy Kathie had been when she first arrived at the school. Yet she had been, and Nancy’s friendliness in the staffroom had played a major part in thawing the then Staff Baby’s reserve. Sharlie could still recall the first time she had seen Kathie smile properly - not politely or out of relief, but with real pleasure. There had been a discussion going on in the staffroom; the subject had long departed Sharlie’s memory, but not Kathie’s glance of gratitude when Nancy had drawn her into the conversation from the edge of the circle; nor the gradual replacement of timidity by interest and then animation, and the happy smile that had eventually spread across the new mistress’s face, as though she had been illuminated from within. It had startled Sharlie at the time – she hadn’t even realised that her fellow Staff Baby had it within her to seem so alive! Yet five years on, she realised she must have seen the same look on her friend’s face a hundred times.

Glancing along the table now, the young English mistress felt content for the pair. It was strange, in some ways, that they had had such an easy time of it. Apart from a brief spell of unpleasantness many years back, no one had ever thought to point fingers at them or talk behind their backs. But then again, maybe it wasn’t so remarkable. Nancy and Kathie were so evidently good for one another, and when they were on good form, as they were today, their enjoyment simply lit up everyone around them. It would have been an unkind person indeed who would have begrudged them their happiness.

'Why did Kathie Ferrars have to be so damn attractive?' Joan Bertram thought wryly as she sat at the breakfast table. Five years and even now she couldn't ignore the junior geography mistress's magnetic appeal. Admittedly it was only on mornings like this one, when Kathie's face was sparkling with energy, that she felt it so strongly. But it was a nuisance, all the same. Joan forked her toast impatiently. She shouldn't let it get to her so much. True, term time was frustrating, but holidays were so much more lively now she had joined the Gateways Club. That was thanks to Mabel Cartwright, now long gone, but there had been several other - well, friends, since. 'I will not be jealous,' Joan said to herself, possibly for the thousandth time, as she forced herself to keep her eyes on her plate.

Ruth Derwent, glancing at her junior colleague, saw the flash of annoyance in her eyes and wondered. Why would Joan Bertram mind about Nancy's appointment? It was worth noting, all the same. Not everyone could be as content about it as they appeared to be this morning. The Senior Mistress took a quick look at the new Head, and was further irritated to see that lady’s evident good humour as she chatted to Jeanne de Lachenais. How could she be so calm in this situation? Words from a friend’s letter sprang to her mind. ‘But why weren’t you given the post, my dear? I don’t like to criticise the Heads, but it strikes me as quite inappropriate to appoint someone younger who has less experience. You’ve been Senior Mistress for years now. What on earth were they thinking?’

Rosalie Dene observed the scene quietly. Ruth’s feelings were not hard to tell, though her face was impassive, as was only politically expedient. The Head’s Secretary, whose duties included sorting the school post every morning, could make a shrewd guess at the source of this latest trouble. ‘One could tell a lot from the mail,’ she reflected. Not just today’s, but in general. There had been three letters returned unopened from Lincolnshire, she remembered, and then hardly any post for Nancy during the last two years. When one knew how big the Wilmot family was, as Rosalie did, that was quite remarkable. She leant back in her chair. And that wasn’t the only curiosity, by any means…

Hmm... partying on a weekday night... just can't quite get my head back to the Chalet School Rolling Eyes

Mabel Cartwright checked her reflection in the mirror of her Bentley and smiled with satisfaction. She felt as confident as she had ever done of picking up a date that evening. It was a couple of months since she had visited the Gateways - an unusual length of time by her standards, but there had been an awfully attractive french woman on the scene since July. Now Renee was gone, however, and Mabel had every intention of enjoying herself at the club.

"Mabel!"
"Darling!"
"It's been so long!"
The cries rang out as Mabel descended the stairs. She maintained a cool demeanour, though the welcome warmed her inwardly. She didn't believe in sentimentality. But maybe it was true about absence making the heart grow fonder. She mused for a moment. At least there were likely to be some new faces in evidence, which in her book was always a good thing.

"Evening Gina, evening Smithy," Mabel took her seat with effortless nonchalance. "A whisky please - neat." She surveyed the scene carelessly. There was a pretty girl by the bar... Mabel raised an eyebrow, but the girl blushed and turned away. Another woman put an arm around her shoulders and glared across the room in Mabel's direction. Mabel repressed a smile and let her glance travel across the room. She had a feeling actually that she'd met the girl before, but it didn't seem worth pursuing now. Plenty more fish in the sea.

The young Lady Cartwright didn't believe in appearing too interested in any one person. Having passed her eyes over the crowd, she settled back in her seat to enjoy herself. She lit up a cigarette and blew smoke rings lazily into the air.

--

"Excuse me, do you have a light?"
Mabel turned in the direction of the enquiry. The voice was well bred, though she was sure she hadn't met its owner before. She lit the lady's cigarette with her characteristically suggestive chivalry, trying to work out why she seemed so familiar. There was something distinctly reminiscent about this figure. Well spoken, very presentable - not unlike Joan Bertram. Mabel smiled to herself. It was unusual for her to remember a woman's name for so long, but she had to admit that Kay's friend had made an impression. She wondered for a fleeting moment what Joan was up to. Then she turned to the business in hand.

Hope you had a good time partying Cathy!!

I love Mabel - she's hilarious. So glad to see her again. If the person she's talking to has a similar accent to Joan, could she be another Chalet mistress? Or an ex-pupil she bumped into when she visited Kathie?
More very soon please.

Oh, and excuse my ignorance, but is Gateways a real club? It's just that I've just finished a book where it features.

It is, or at least it was. I can't remember if it's still open but I don't think so. It was the lesbian club in London years and years ago. Around the time this drabble is set, funnily enough!

*looks pleadingly at Catherine*

The Gateways closed in the mid 80s. It's the club featured in 'The Killing of Sister George' - an absolute classic.

More drabble please Catherine!

Funny, that's just what I was thinking, I seem to remember in "Romance" Kathy warned Mabel off Mary-Lou - plus she's the only person in the Chalet School that Mabel noticed much when she was there. And it would explain the accent thing...

Hmmmm...wanders off to think some more

Sorry... had writer's block Embarassed... back in the mood now (but you'll have to wait on Mabel... she only comes out when I've been carousing! Laughing)

“It was simply marvellous,” Kathie said gleefully that evening in the staff room. She, Peggy and Davida had returned an hour earlier from their first mechanics lesson in Interlaken, and though the three friends had spent much of the last hour scrubbing their hands with pumice and lemon to remove the oily streaks, their high spirits showed that it had clearly been worth it. “Herr Fischer’s explanations were so clear – the man’s a born teacher!”

“Isn’t he?” The usually retiring Davida was nearly as animated as her colleague for once. “I never thought we’d be able to reattach the spark plug once he took it off -”

“- but we did, and with hardly any help!” finished Peggy smugly. “Ladies, I think we should be proud of ourselves!”

Linda Stone laughed at this display of enthusiasm from her compatriots. “Honestly, you three! You sound like Middles who’ve just been allowed to do their first science experiment.”

“That’s exactly how I feel,” the science mistress said with satisfaction. “That was a marvellous day, and so was this one.” She grinned at her colleagues, unmoved by the general laughter that greeted this statement.

“’Vida’s quite right,” Peggy backed her friend up after a moment, “although I’d have to say this was more fun than my first chemistry lesson. Ernst Fischer is a much less terrifying prospect than Bill was in the Dark Ages!”

“Thank you, Peggy,” a dry voice came from the door. The staff held their sides as the games mistress gave a violent start, and then uttered a most unparliamentary expression before flinging a cushion in the direction of Kathie Robertson, who had mimicked the Head of St Mildred’s voice to perfection.

“You horror! I thought it was Bill come to get me!” Peggy’s expression was a mixture of dismay and relief.

“What a nice conscience you must have,” Kathie grinned at her old school-friend unrepentantly. “I say, Peg, what on earth have you been doing to your hands? They’re almost puce.” She came over to join her colleagues, and settled down to listen with interest to the adventurous trio’s tale.

--

Nancy Wilmot attached herself quietly to the group. Her entrance in the staffroom had gone almost unnoticed amid the lively discussion, and she was thankful for this. It was almost time for her first Staff Meeting as Head, and it was a relief that the attention was elsewhere. She pulled up a chair beside her partner. “So it went well?”

“Wonderfully well,” Kathie turned with a smile. “I say, Nance! I’ve got an idea what might be wrong with our car,” she pushed a rather tattered manual in her friend’s direction, “Take a look at this.”

As Kathie described her latest theory, Nancy listened less to her words than to her tone. She was glad of her companion’s keenness, and in a strange way pleased that her own concerns could take second place. ‘Thank goodness for that,’ she remarked silently to herself, ‘for talking only about my work would do neither of us any good!’

--

The scene that met Ruth Derwent’s eyes as she entered the staffroom was thus one of general merriment, the new Head apparently deep in conversation with the young geography mistress over their car manual.

“Dear me!” she commented, “I had no idea you were interested in cars, Nancy.” Her eyes met the Head’s, and she felt a sudden surge of anger at the awkwardness of her position. “But then, you did grow up with five brothers, didn’t you?” she smiled acidly at the Head. “You must have acquired so many of their tastes.”

Nancy Wilmot blinked once. Then, aware that the staffroom had fallen quiet, she smiled mildly at Ruth. “I’m sure I did.” She touched her partner’s arm lightly, “Kathie, would you give Ruth her seat please? It’s time we began the meeting.”

The mistresses who were still standing hurried to settle down, while Kathie, having glanced with some puzzlement at the Senior Mistress, vacated the seat at the Head’s right hand. She made her way to the other end of the long array of chairs and sat down quietly next to Deborah Smith, a new mistress who had joined the school just the previous term.

“Thank you, ladies,” Nancy brought the meeting to order. “It’s Saturday evening, so I’m sure we all want to get through the business swiftly, even if it is our first official meeting this term.” She glanced around the room and, seeing no dissent, turned to the School Secretary. “Rosalie, would you read the minutes of the last meeting, please?”

--

The half dozen items on the agenda were dealt with in short order. Despite her easy-going nature Nancy could be a firm chair, and on this occasion the staff did not test her patience. Whether they were treading carefully after Ruth’s remark, or simply anxious to finish the meeting and return to socialising, Nancy could not tell. The new Head herself was actually grateful for the elder woman’s comment. After a moment of surprise, she had found a quiet determination to see the meeting through successfully, and her earlier trepidation vanished as she rose to the task. Knowing that the Senior Mistress was finding the situation difficult, Nancy was careful to bring her into the discussion, turning to her on several occasions for her opinion on this matter or that.

“Good, then that’s settled,” Nancy ticked off the last item on the agenda, the responsibility for Staff Evening, which had been taken up voluntarily by Rosalind Yolland and Rosemary Charlesworth. “Any Other Business, ladies?”

There was a brief silence, then Rosalind Moore spoke up lightly, “Nancy, could you tell us what is happening to the English department this term, please?” She cast a glance in the Senior Mistress’s direction. “I’m sure Ruth will be very busy in Hilda’s absence. I wouldn’t like to think that she’d be under too much pressure.”

Sharlie Andrews cast a thoughtful glance in Kathie’s direction, then seeing her friend staring silently at the floor, joined the conversation. “Yes, please, Nancy. Hilda usually takes both of the Sixths for literature, and several classes with the Fifths. Mightn’t it help to have some additional support?” Her voice was much cooler than usual, though she met her head of department’s eyes quite calmly.

A murmur arose at these interventions, a number of staff turning involuntarily to see how Ruth was taking this. The Senior Mistress’s face was flushed darkly, though her lips were firmly set.

“Well, Joey Maynard could do it.” Rosalie looked up consideringly from her notes. “But Madame would have to be consulted, of course. She always is about new staff – even those who come temporarily.”

Nancy, who had been stunned temporarily by this unexpected turn in the conversation, rapped sharply on the table at this point. “Thank you, ladies! As far as I am aware, Ruth is quite happy to take the extra classes herself.” She glanced at that lady, “I’m sure she would let me know if the added workload proved too heavy, but I do not expect that to happen. She has my full confidence and should have yours as well.”

Good catch by Nancy!

I hope Ruth brings herself to say something about those extra classes though. I can't see how they'd all fit into her timetable, and can see the effort making her mighty short-tempered! Not that she doesn't deserve a dose of retribution, given the nasty comment, but it could make matters worse in the long run.

Hellllp - I'm talking at a conference this afternoon and I've been writing drabble instead of my talk Exclamation

“And what on earth was that all about?” Kathie Ferrars, who had followed her partner to the Study shortly after the Staff Meeting, was not in a mood to mince her words.

Nancy looked at her and only just managed to suppress a sigh. “Nothing.”

“Rot!” Kathie said forcefully. Standing on the opposite side of the Head’s oak desk, she regarded her companion severely. “What’s going on? Why did Ruth make that comment, and why did the others jump on her later? You have to tell me, Nance!”

To the younger woman’s frustration, the new Head turned away from her and began to walk around the Study.

“OK, I’ll tell you some of it,” Nancy conceded, after a full minute of contemplation. “But I want you to understand that it’s difficult. This is work, Kathie. I shouldn’t be chatting about it.” She put up a hand to fend off her partner’s protest. “Yes, I know that today affected you. That’s why I will tell you what’s going on – some of it, at least. But it has to stay between these walls.”

“I don’t gossip,” her partner’s response was curt.

“I know you don’t! Look,” Nancy exhaled slowly, “I don’t want to argue. Please, Kathie! But it’s really important that you don’t fly off the handle with Ruth if I tell you what’s going on – at least as far as I understand it.”

Kathie regarded her silently. Then, seeing that her companion meant what she said, she gave a sigh and leant against the desk. “All right, I promise. Now tell me, for goodness’ sake, otherwise I’ll be imagining things are far worse than they are.” Despite herself, Kathie’s voice wobbled slightly at the end of this request.

Nancy saw that she really was worried. “Don’t fret, love!” she moved round the desk to sit beside her friend, “Nothing bad has happened, and it won’t if I have any say in the matter.” She thought for a moment, trying to find a way to explain Ruth’s behaviour. “It’s just – I think Ruth feels passed over.”

“For the Headship?” Kathie glanced up at her.

“Yes.” Nancy flushed suddenly. “After all, I’m not next in seniority to Hilda.”

Kathie thought about this. “Ruth’s been here longer than you. But so have Jeanne, Julie, Rosalind, and probably some of the others too?”

“Even Peggy has been here longer than I have,” Nancy nodded. “But Ruth’s position is different. She’s Senior Mistress. According to hierarchy, at least, she should have got the job.”

“Ye-es,” Kathie said slowly. “But her authority comes more from her age, wouldn’t you say? And from Hilda’s recognition of her position. I’m not sure that’s enough for the Headship.” She glanced at her partner, “I’m not paying compliments for the sake of it, but I do think you have more instinctive authority. You often find yourself taking charge of events at school, despite not being one of the older stateswomen.”

Nancy accepted this tribute quietly. “I agree about Ruth – though I wouldn’t let anyone else hear me passing judgment like this.” She frowned slightly. “You know what? I’m not sure she’d even enjoy the role, and deep down she may even acknowledge that. But it doesn’t mean that she’d like a younger woman being promoted instead.”

Ooh shiny drabble! I hope the talk went well Catherine, and now that it's over I hope you have more time for drabbling.

Shame on boring boss-type people not to like having drabble read to them. I wouldn't complain at having surprise drable-readings instead of lectures or papers. Mind you, I'm feeling slightly feverish so I may not be talking any sens at all.

*looking forward to the next bit* How far into term are we now, by the way?

Thanks for the updates - it would be a bit unrealistic if everything ran totally smoothly and Nancy had 100% support from everyone, in real life she/they would be gacing catty remarks from more than one person, I think.
Nancy definitely did the correct thing when she supported Ruth, the trouble is that Ruth is now in a situation where her pride may prevent from asking for help no matter how overworked she might be.

Anyone who's interested in the historical references can click here

The two friends were silent for a minute. Then Nancy glanced at her partner, “I’m sorry this came up just now. You looked so relaxed earlier.”

Kathie slipped a hand in hers. “Doesn’t matter. It wasn’t you who brought it up, anyway.”

“No.” Nancy hesitated. “Kathie, I know Ruth’s comment sounded personal. But I really don’t think she means us ill – as a couple, I mean.” Nancy’s blue eyes were troubled, but she spoke steadily enough. “She’s never said anything like that before – I think it just slipped out now because she was so overwrought.”

Kathie took a deep breath. “I hope you’re right. Though I don’t like her much better for making your work difficult.”

The elder woman squeezed her hand, “That’s just something I’ll have to deal with. And judging by what happened in the staffroom, I won’t be entirely without support.”

Her companion nodded slowly, “Sharlie put herself on the line for you, Nance. Ruth is her head of department this term.”

“Ye-es,” Nancy acknowledged. “I’d better keep an eye on those two. I hope it won’t come to trouble, though. Sharlie’s taking on a couple of Ruth’s classes this term.”

“Good for her.” Kathie fell silent for a moment, her forehead creased. Then she took a decision. “Nance, I had a letter from England this morning.”

“Really? From whom?” Her partner glanced at her inquiringly.

“From Mabel,” Kathie extracted a folded piece of paper from her pocket and handed it over, “She sent me this.”

Nancy’s eyes widened as she took the newspaper cutting. “The Sunday Express – I wouldn’t have thought that was Mabel’s style – I – oh!” An expression of distaste flicked across her face. She skimmed the article, reading out loud as phrases struck her, “Vice – perversion – immorality – danger to children –” She finished it and looked up with a bitter smile, “Well, at least it can’t get much worse.”

“No, but it may well continue for some time,” Kathie said soberly. “The Commission published its report on the 3rd. The press has been brutal already – and it may only get worse if the Government accepts the report’s recommendations.”

“Hmm.” Nancy was trying to digest the news, her mind a whirl of questions. “Did Mabel send you this off her own bat? I’ve never heard her talking about politics.”

“I asked her to follow the news for me,” Kathie said briefly. Then she looked at her partner rather fearfully, “Nance, I’m sorry for thrusting this on you now. But I think we both need to be careful – very careful. This is not a good time for people to make snide comments about us. However unintentionally.”

I've always been given to understand that whilst homosexual relations between men were illegal, a similar law was never passed for woman because no-one could convince Queen Victoria that such a thing was possible. Does anyone know anything about this?

#437:  Author: MoraLocation: Lancaster PostPosted: Sun Nov 07, 2004 8:21 pm

You're right about the first part, but the bit about Queen Victoria is something of an urban myth. A bit like the "We are not amused" thing.

Have just clicked (several times) on page 23 - and been told "no posts for this topic" Shocked

I know there is still prejudice today, but this makes me realise how much things have changed for the better.
Nowadays is it OK for a couple (same sex or not) to have a relationship and work at the same school - especially if one of them has authority over the other?

As wonderful as always, Catherine! Love seeing the staff when they don't have to be formal round the girls, and like the way you're including the effects of real, external events.

I think relationships are ok in schools, Dawn. Two of the English teachers at my school were married, one of them being the head of English, and that was fine. As for same sex relationships, not sure, but should be.

And now back to wonderful logic exercises *sigh*

Yay, a lot more posts, thanks Catherine! I've had a bad attack of RL (essay deadlines) but now have time again and am indulging myself!

Don't know specificallyabout schools, but when one of my friends got engaged to her immediate boss, he requested transfer to a different department. He felt it was not good for their privaet relationship, for him to be in a position of authority over her at work.

I call that very respnsible and respectful of him.

It's perfectly acceptable, Miriam, as long as they keep their personal relationship for out of school hours, and behave professionally in school.

It probably depends on the institution. Where I work, relationships between supervisor and supervisee are against policy. However, when one spouse in my department was promoted in a way that would have violated this rule, the administration was able to sidestep the problem by rearranging the chain of command.

Also as long as they don't do things like get pregnant by members of staff other than their husband. This did happen in my school. Very messy. And everybody knew. And nobody really knew how everybody knew.

Well at least no one is going to get pregnant in this story! Rolling Eyes

For just one moment, Nancy wished heartily that she hadn’t accepted Hilda Annersley’s invitation to be Head. Then, seeing that Kathie’s dark eyes were pools of anxiety, she pulled herself together and spoke as steadily as she could, “I take your point. But there’s no point worrying about it now.” She rose to her feet and brushed down her skirt, “We can’t do anything except be our usual selves – and do our jobs as best we can.”

“I suppose you’re right.” The strain began to fade from Kathie’s face, “It’s been enough so far, anyway.”

Nancy stretched out her hands to her partner. “Trust your Headmistress on this one?” she asked lightly.

Kathie gave a faint laugh, and let herself be pulled to her feet. “Well, if you put it like that!”

Nancy smiled down at her friend. Even standing, the younger woman was a good head shorter than her, “We’ll be OK, Kathie.” She pressed her companion’s hands suddenly, “I say, do you remember when we were last alone together in the Study?”

Kathie looked surprised, then laughed. “Years ago! When Hilda called us in after the Play!” Her eyes began to dance, “You’d behaved quite atrociously for the previous month, if I recollect correctly.”

“Guilty as charged!” her partner acknowledged.

“And my heart nearly stopped beating when we were left in here alone!” Kathie continued laughingly. “Oh, Nancy! I was so hopelessly in love with you.”

‘Was’?” Nancy feigned dismay at this statement, “Are you trying to tell me something, perhaps?”

“Not in the slightest!” the younger woman returned promptly. “The emphasis was on ‘hopeless’, of course.”

Nancy laughed and drew her closer, “And now?”

“Oh, well!” Kathie’s eyes sparkled as she wound her arms round her companion’s neck, “I’m not sure I’ll convince you with words, my love…”

Rubbish day at work --> consumption of box of chocolates + wine & now vanilla flavoured vodka --> this installment!

Mabel rolled over in bed, blinking into consciousness. This wasn’t her house. Or her town flat. And nice though they were, she didn’t recognise the velvet curtains.

Propping herself up on her elbow, Mabel did what any woman would have done who couldn’t remember where she’d spent the last night, or who she’d spent it with. She lit a cigarette.

“Ah, good morning! So you’re awake at last?” a cheerful voice greeted her a minute later. The smoke had attracted her hostess back to the bedroom.

“Morning, honey,” Mabel drawled lazily. She had no idea what this woman’s name was, but she wasn’t too bothered. It was a common enough occurrence. Anyway, half the time at the Gateways Club, the names people gave were just handles. One might as well stick to terms of endearment. It saved the effort of remembering names.

But her companion was looking at her with amusement from the doorway, “I thought you’d never wake up! Did you enjoy last night?”

“Ah! Of course,” Mabel had no recollection whatsoever. Had she driven the Bentley in this state? Dear God! She hoped it was still in one piece. She caught sight of her reflection in the mirror and only just managed not to grimace. “And you?”

“Oh, I slept well enough,” the reply seemed suspiciously innocent. “Would you like some coffee? I’ve got a lovely French blend…”

Mais bien sur. Avec plaisir,” Lady Cartwright dropped her companion a wink. There was something to be said for having dated a Frenchwoman, after all. Even if she’d turned out to be – but no! – Mabel stopped herself here. She didn’t believe in holding grudges. Especially when there was another woman on the scene. “Quelle heure est-il, cherie?

Dix heures,” the reply came with horrible swiftness, “Dans une heure je vais a l’eglise. Tu veux m’accompagner?

The vision departed.

I went to an English Language party tonight where we all had to have pseudonyms because my mate was recording us as part of his coursework and I got called Mabel! I was very honoured and amused but nobody else understood.

I'm also still slightly drunk so apologies if this makes no sense.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeease tell us more Catherine! *looks pleading*

I got so behind on this, I decided to leave it and have a gooood long read on a special occasion. Today, I have caught up at work and there are no more emails, quotes, accounts, datasets or nasty little slips with phone messages waiting for me Party

It won't last but I finally caught up with this very shiny drabble. thank you Catherine.

From the quick response in French, that has to be a CS person with the delectable Mabel!

But who????
