#9:  Author: LissLocation: Harrow, London PostPosted: Wed Jan 21, 2004 9:08 pm

Just caught up with this one, Lisa, and I really like it. More please.

Quote:
They did not go unnoticed. “Who’s that with the Abbess?” Jack Lambert asked lazily from the pree’s corner.
Wanda von Eschenau shook her golden curls off her face and sat up too look. “Perhaps it is her neice?” she suggested.
“What neice?” mumbled Renata van Buren as she looked up from her German essay. “Can’t you lot let the poor Abbess have a day off without asking about the whys and wherefores!” She turned back to her book and her friends eyed her with surprise.
“I wonder how the kid will get on?” mused the Head Girl, her black head resting on one arm. “Wanda, Renata, I think we’d better warn the others to keep a weather eye lifting out for her.”
“Why?” asked Wanda, opening her violet eyes wide.
“You know what some of the kids can be like,” was all Jack would vouchsafe. She closed her eyes and put her head back to soak up the sun, and Wanda took the hint and said no more. However, the seed had been planted, and Mary would find the prefects staunch allies in the future.

Liked this bit particularly. I wish we could have seen Jack grow up. Although, of course, therein lies the joy of drabbles.

ETA: Niece, not neice. Just in case no-one's already said. Parrot

ha ha! No,not more. I'm trying to finish Redheads- I'm fed up of having half a dozen stories on the go. Thanks Liss for pointing out the spelling error. Sometimes I remember to run the spell check- sometimes not. And I hate that word anyway!

Uh.. maybe that wasn't the BEST title I could have chosen, but 'Mary and the CS' sounds so boring!

At the Gathering, I will be the incredibly shy person who hardly says a word all weekend - until I read you all a bed time story anyway!

Then I will perform a drabble for you - complete with the voices as I hear them! Wink

Mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

KB, I can't see why you should be. You're a mod too, AND the all powerful autocratic HM to boot! (Lesley has a lot to answer for, doesn't she?!) - while Rachel, in spite of her evil mutterings, is still only on 'First Lesson'. Maybe Liss is trying (vainly?) to restrain her.. not being part of the Rachel/Rachael gang!

Hey Liss! I've just realised. Your name is similar to mine- wanna join me and Lisa?

*off to look for any other derivatives of 'Elizabeth'*

Oh, Catherine- thanks for the flowers! Laughing

I'm not actually "part" of the gang.

I RUN the gang, as is only fitting for the future President, Prime Minister and Empress of the Outer Galaxies.

*HERE YOU GO!!!*

Meanwhile, Lucy had headed straight for her dormitory and the safety and privacy of her cubicle, regardless of rules. She pulled down the cretonne curtains and curled up on her bed and tried to get a grip on her temper. AS a small child she had been prone to tantrums, as many small children are, but they had largely vanished and she was usually easy-going as a rule.
All that had changed in the holidays past. One day, shortly before she was due to return, her mother and father had taken her to one side and explained that she was adopted. Lucy had heard rumours of this at school from time to time, but since she was eminently practical, she had noted that the girls doing the rumour mongering were evidently out to hurt her, and she had therefore decided that it was nonsense and had not even mentioned it either at home, or to Felicity and Jean. Therefore, the discovery that these so-called malicious rumours were in fact true was all the more shocking, and the Peterses had watched in dismay as their previously outgoing and confident daughter became quiet, withdrawn and often surly, although more than once Phoebe Peters had caught a strange look in the girl’s eye that had torn her heart.
Felicity and Jean had noticed a change too, although they were too young to spend much time considering the whys and wherefores of the change; they simply assumed that she was being touchy, and left her to herself when she flared out. Not surprisingly, this did nothing to help. Already feeling insecure and uncertain, her friends’ behaviour simply convinced her that they too were false, and in her overwrought state, Lucy mistook politeness for real friendliness, and decided that Felicity and Jean wanted to replace herself with Mary. As a result, she developed an instant dislike to that young woman. This would not have mattered under usual circumstances, but Lucy’s position as a member of the Platz community, where gossip was rife, meant that she was perfectly posed to pick up and repeat ideas and comments that would ultimately give Mary- and herself- a good deal of trouble.

It's only recently that people have started to tell their young children that they are adopted. It was thought to unsettle them. I wouldn't worry Lisa!

Like Chelsea I don't like where it's going - but I do like the way it is developing (sense?). Poor kids!

Thanks for saying that, Carolyn. I wasn't sure whether I was created a contrived plot device!

No more yet. Like I said before, I don't have a plan mapped in my head for this one, so it's a case of writing when inspiration strikes. Although, hopefully I've now set up enough potential 'tensions' (no pun intended- not intending to muscle in on Ellie's territory!!) for the ideas to start coming thick and fast..

“Did you have a good time this afternoon?” Miss Annersley asked as she and Mary tucked into plates of Karen’s delicious stew.
Mary nodded, her mouth too full to speak. After making an almighty effort, she swallowed the mouthful- at risk of choking herself in the process- and beamed at her aunt. “It was smashing!” she said enthusiastically, oblivious of the Head’s raised eyebrow. “I love Felicity and Jean. I hope we’re going to be chums,” she finished, and the implications of this distracted Hilda from her imminent lecture on slang.
“Felicity and Jean?” she repeated. “What about Lucy? She was there, wasn’t she?”
Mary shrugged carelessly. “Yes. She didn’t stay long. She was in a foul mood and stalked off. Felicity and Jean said she’d been bad-tempered all term.”
A crease appeared between the Head’s brows. “Did they really?”
She sat for a moment and cast her thoughts back. Certainly, regardless of her temper or lack of it, Lucy had managed to avoid getting herself into trouble serious enough to warrant a visit to the Study, and now she came to think of it, Hilda realised that the girl had not been her usual sunny self in the Scripture lessons which the Head still taught herself. The Religious Education curriculum had been revised slightly the year before, but the special time devoted to considering the Scriptures was sacrosanct at the School, and remained unaffected by curriculum changes.
“Did Lucy say anything before she left you?” Hilda asked slowly.
Mary looked up, a flash of resentment in her eyes. It was gone almost at once, and her voice had a wistful note when she next spoke. “Why does it matter? She’s prob’ly just grumpy. Maybe she had a bad day.” She shrugged again. “It doesn’t bother me.”
Hilda gave a small smile. She knew that this statement was not meant unkindly; Mary was referring to her own reaction to Lucy’s unpleasantness, rather than showing a lack of concern for the other girl. “I’m glad you won’t let it worry you,” she said firmly. “All the same, Mary, I think it’s time we had a chat.” There was a note in the Head’s voice that Mary had not heard before, and she looked at her with questioning eyes.
Hilda smiled again, and, after putting her plate aside, held out her hand. The girl came to her and settled beside her, waiting to hear what she had to say.
Miss Annersley sat and thought in silence for a second. It was very important that Mary understood what she was going to say; said wrongly, it could embitter relations between them, and cause more trouble in the long run.

*as promised- but not as expected*

“What is it, Auntie Hilda?” Mary prompted.
Hilda suddenly changed her mind. Time enough for the child to learn what was and what was not done in school, and in some ways it would be better for her to learn for herself rather than having it forced on her by her headmistress-aunt. So she smiled and put her arm around the girl.
“Are you looking forward to tomorrow?” she asked.
Mary grinned up at her. “Oh, yes. It’ll be super fun, I think. When will I meet the others? Felicity and Jean say they’re really nice.”
The Head laughed. “So they are! You’ll be introduced to them in your form room before Prayers. I’ll get Jack to take you down.”
Mary’s eyes clouded. “Can’t you do it?” She was not normally a shy child, but the thought of being handed from one unknown person to another made her quail.
Hilda smiled. “I don’t normally do such a thing with new girls,” she pointed out gently. “But do you really want me to introduce you?”
Mary curled up in a ball beside her aunt and reflected. After a moment, she looked up. “I s’pose not,” she admitted. “After all, are the Head!”
The Head smiled. “Exactly. I’m glad you can see if for yourself, Mary. And now, it’s nearly quarter past eight. Run along and get ready for bed, and I’ll put your uniform out for you. I’ll be with you shortly,” the Head finished, rising as she spoke.
Mary looked suddenly sulky. “It’s early!” she protested. “You can’t want me to go to bed now!”
“I do, I’m afraid. For one thing, the other Lower IVs will be going up now. For another, I have a little work to do, and you’ve had a long day, and tomorrow will be longer still.”
Mary got reluctantly to her feet and trailed out of the room. Her aunt watched her go with some relief. She knew she could easily have compelled the girl’s obedience by turning into the formidable headmistress, but with Nell Wilson’s warnings from a couple of days before still ringing in her ears, she was anxious that Mary should feel that she was living with her aunt first, and her Headmistress second.
The following morning, at Fruhstuck- which Mary did not attend- the Head requested Jack Lambert to come directly to the study. The Head Girl’s marked eyebrows had jumped dramatically at this, but it was not long before she appeared.
Miss Annersley looked up with a smile as the tall girl entered the room.
“Jack, my dear. Would you do something for me?”
Jack nodded. “Of course, Miss Annersley!” She had a good idea what was coming.
The Head rose from her seat and went to stand by the door that led into the Annexe. “Mary!”
“Coming!” came floating back, and there was a sound of thudding footsteps coming down the stairs.
The Head’s eyebrows went up. “That will have to stop, won’t it Jack?” and she flashed a smile at the Head Girl just as Mary drew to a stop in front of her.
“Oh. Hello.” Mary sounded uncertain, and the Head hid a smile. Jack was by no means a frightening person in the normal scheme of things, but she could look dignified on occasion, and had evidently chosen to do so now.
“Come along it, both of you,” the Head said briskly, and the two girls followed her into the study. Miss Annersley returned to her desk and smiled at them.
“Jack, could you take Mary along to Lower IVa for me please?” The Head paused and glanced at a timetable. “And ask someone to run along to Miss Dene and get some of the necessary stationary. Nothing special, just the basics that are required for- let me see- English and diktat.” The Head replaced her master timetable, and looked across at the Head Girl.
“Certainly, Miss Annersley,” Jack responded politely, glancing at the new girl as she spoke. The light in the hall was dim at this hour, and it was only now that Jack had managed to get a good look at Mary. Her eyes alone betrayed her surprise; they flicked from Mary to the Head and back again, and the Head sighed.
“Yes, I know there is a great resemblance,” she said crisply. “I also know that it is all over the school that Mary is my niece! Not that it’s so hard to guess. Mary, have you got everything you need?”
Rather subdued, Mary nodded. “Yes, Au-“ She stopped as she caught Jack’s eye, and started again. “Yes, Miss Annersley,” she replied meekly.
The Head looked at her newest Middle, and suddenly relaxed. “Come here.”
Mary obeyed immediately, and felt her spirits rise as her aunt gave her a quick kiss and a reassuring squeeze before releasing her to begin her school life.

So sweet - I wonder how Mary will deal with having an Aunt as headmistress. With Joey and Madge everyone met them together so Madge was always known as the Head AND Joey's sister. Here, all the old girls know Hilda as the head and are only now going to know her as Mary's aunt. Wonder if it will make a difference - I expect it will.

Hilda is certainly handling this well! Mary is trying, which is a relief. I wonder if the other girls will be afraid she will tattle to her aunt and be horridly polite and careful in her presence? I was always a little surprised that the Madge/Joey situation never brought tht up.

A little bit more... I'll write more later and post it, hopefully.

Jack could not help glancing sideways at the younger girl as they crossed the School to Lower IVa, and Mary felt it.
“Is there something the matter?” she asked at last.
Jack gave her a startled look and felt rather silly. “Er-no.” The Head Girl recovered her composure and continued rather more calmly. “You’ll have to forgive us, Mary. We’re not used to having a miniature Miss Annersley among us!”
Mary’s brows met and her blue-grey eyes took on a steely shine that was unpleasantly familiar to Jack. “I’m not my aunt, you know. I don’t want people to be thinking of her every time they look at me!”
This time the look Jack sent Mary’s way was full of respect, and she gave a rueful laugh. “You’re absolutely right, Mary. I’m sorry! And here we are at Lower IVa.” Jack grinned at Mary and reached to push the door open, but then she paused. She put her hands on the younger girl’s shoulders and grinned at her.
“Listen to me, Mary Annersley. If you have any trouble with the kids in your form, just look at them as you looked at me a moment ago. That’ll settle them, I promise you!” Jack’s grin widened, and she opened the door to present a rather stunned Mary to her form mistress, Miss Ferrars.

That lady turned with a smile that froze slightly as she caught sight of Mary. Jack bit her cheeks to prevent herself from grinning again, primly introduced her charge, and vanished before Mary had time to register that she had gone.
Miss Ferrars shook herself mentally and looked at her newest pupil with a warm smile that made her brown eyes sparkle. Mary liked her on sight.
“Mary, welcome to Lower IVa! I’m sure you’ll soon feel at home. Let’s get you a seat, shall we, and then the bell will go for Prayers.” The mistress turned the girl to face her form as she spoke, and scanned the room for a spare desk.
“Ah. There we are! Go and sit next to Lucy, Mary. Lucy, after Prayers please take Mary to Miss Dene for the stationary supplies.”
Lucy mumbled and Miss Ferrars looked at her. “Lucy! Did you hear what I said?”
Lucy raised resentful eyes to her form mistress’ face, and said with painful clarity, “I heard, Miss Ferrars.” There was a bite in her voice, and Kathie Ferrars gave her a puzzled glance. However, there was no time to investigate as the bell for Prayers rang at that point, and the mistress could only hand Mary a copy of the school hymn book, and usher the form out into the Hall.
“What happens now?” Mary hissed to Jean who, as a member of the Church of England, was present at this service. Felicity, like the other Maynards, attended the Catholic Prayers led by Mademoiselle de Lachennais, the Senior Mistress.
Jean gave her a look of mild reproof. “You’ll find out. But you have to be quiet! The Head’s about to begin!” and Mary turned to see, for the first time, her aunt as the Head.
The fact was that Mary’s father had not had the same depth of religious feeling as his devout sister, and after the death of Mary’s mother, had stopped going to church altogether. Whilst living with her father, Mary had attended the local high school, and religious observance there had been kept as basic as possible. By contrast, the Chalet School took its Christian ethos very seriously, and the girls were at all times encouraged to reflect on spiritual matters. In many ways, this was lead by the Head herself, who took pains in her scripture lessons to allow the girls to reflect more deeply on biblical teaching than they might otherwise do so.
As always, the service was brief and sincere, and Mary, who had fidgeted and fiddled in assemblies at her old school, found her attention compelled by Miss Annersley’s voice. Always rich and low, the Head’s voice was almost at its best in this formal situation, and it rang across the Hall with an absolute clarity and feeling that did more than anything else to create an atmosphere of worship in the Hall, and Mary, like the other girls, responded to it.

After Prayers, the girls filed out of the Hall and streamed off to their various form rooms, the mistresses following. When Miss Ferrars rejoined her form, she recalled that Mary still needed her stationery, so called the new girl up to her. After a moment’s hesitation, she reminded Lucy of her earlier request, and looked thoughtfully after the latter when she saw how Lucy’s face clouded.
“There’s something wrong with Lucy Peters this term,” the mistress mused as she watched the pair depart and quickly marked off everyone’s name in the register. “She’s been in the occasional spot of trouble this term, but nothing major. However, I’ve a feeling that Mary’s arrival is the icing on the cake. I’ll keep an eye on them, but I can’t interfere when Mary’s brand spanking new and Lucy has done no more than look!” With which, the mistress filed the thought away for later consideration, and turned to begin her arithmetic lesson which, since this was Monday, was delivered in fluent and colloquial German.
The previous term had seen a change in school policy with regard to language teaching. Of late years, the School had seen a slight increase in the number of new girls for whom neither English, French, nor German was a mother tongue, and parents had complained when they realised that the School’s traditional methods meant that their offspring could only use their own language on Sunday and Saturday afternoon. Consequently, there had been a review of what had been the status quo, and as a result, it had been decreed that before Prayers in the morning, and after in the evening, language rules would be relaxed. It made little difference to the actual teaching, but as Miss Wilson had observed, it did give the girls more control over their limited free time. Surprisingly, the Staff found that girls who were long term residents chose to stick to the old regime, whilst those girls who had previously been very silent in free time because of the language constraints relaxed considerably, and closer friendships were forged as a result.
However, all this did not help Mary when she discovered, to her horror, that Lucy asked for the materials in reasonably fluent German, and Miss Dene responded likewise, indicating that this was the norm. Forgetting the other girl’s apparent hostility, Mary grabbed Lucy’s arm as they left the office.
“What’s all that about?” she demanded.
Lucy looked at her, a strange expression flickering in her eyes. “Don’t you know? We’re trilingual. That means-“
“I know what it means,” Mary put in impatiently. “Are you really saying we have to speak German?”
Lucy smirked. “Yep. From Prayers to Prayers. Tomorrow it’ll be French. On Wednesday you can speak English though,” she added kindly, speaking it herself.
“Who’s that speaking English?” demanded a voice behind them, and the pair turned to see Jack Lambert, who had been running an errand for Miss Charlesworth.
Lucy looked up at the Head Girl. “Please, Jack, I was just explaining the language rules to Mary,” she said.
Jack cast a startled look at the Head’s niece. “You mean you didn’t know?” she gasped.
Mary looked uncomfortable. She had a vague memory of both the old lawyer and her aunt saying something about French and German, but the truth was that she had paid very little attention to either of them, and was now by way of regretting it.
Jack’s black eyes glinted with amusement and she grinned. “I see. Well, I’m sure you’ll pick it up quickly. In the meantime, the pair of you should scuttle on. Mary- a warning. You’ll be given two weeks grace. After that, if you’re caught speaking English when you shouldn’t, or any language at all when you’re supposed to be silent, you’ll be fined. Now, scram!”
The two juniors looked at each other and disappeared on the word.

I wonder if the language problems will spark off some sort of understanding between Lucy and Mary. She was nice enough in speaking in English to Mary.

Meanwhile, Mary was heartily repenting of her earlier inattention. Most of the arithmetic lesson went over her head, and diktat was no better. Things improved a little in the German grammar lesson, as Miss Denny quickly recognised that Mary’s ignorance of the language was far greater than the rest of the form, and she set the girl an easier piece of work. Nevertheless, by the time the bell rang for break, the old resentment had come back, and she was very silent for the first part of break.
“Is everything OK, Mary?” Felicity asked, noting the other girl’s quiet.
Mary gave her a grim smile. “’Course it is. Tell me, what do you do for fun?”
Felicity looked startled. “We dance, or sing. Or play games in the common rooms. Sometimes, we-er, have some brighter ideas!”
“That’s our job!” Jean maintained stoutly from Felicity’s other side. “We’re Middles. Without us, the School would die of boredom!”
All three girls giggled at this, and Mary turned to Felicity again.
“What about in lessons?”
“We normally work,” the other said ruefully. “No choice. But,” Felicity winked one blue eye, “sometimes we play games at the back. Isn’t is lucky you’re with us?”
“I don’t think Mary would do anything like that,” put in Lucy with malice aforethought.
“You think?” Mary’s eyes began to flash.
Lucy grinned at her. “OK, then. Prove it. You have to win four rounds of ‘noughts and crosses’ next lesson. I’ll partner you. If you don’t get through four games, then we’ll have to think of a forfeit. Agreed?”
“Lucy!” protested Felicity, with a wild glance at Jean.
Lucy and Mary ignored her. “Done!” responded the new girl, and she and Lucy shook hands on it.
“You won’t back out?” Lucy checked.
Mary raised her head and looked down her nose at the other girl- she was a good inch and a half taller. “I don’t go back on my word!” she retorted smartly.
Lucy gave her another smile- a cat’s smile. “Good!”
The bell rang, and the girls returned to the form room and began to take their books from their desks.
“What do I need for this lesson?” Mary asked a rather anxious looking Felicity.
“Your St Matthew,” Felicity returned shortly. Then she turned imploring eyes on Mary. “Mary, please- don’t! It’s only your first day!”
“Lucy dared me,” Mary said defiantly as she pulled out her St.Matthew. “Who’s our mistress for this lesson?”
Felicity had no chance to respond, for the door opened at that point and Miss Annersley, very stately in her MA gown, swept in and took her place on the dais.

What's the betting that Lucy deliberately gets Mary into trouble with Hilda? Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

#138:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 7:49 pm

“Open your St.Matthews, please, girls,” the Head instructed as she settled at the desk and took the register. Long experience enabled her to do so quickly, and before long she had the lesson well under control.
At the back of the room, Mary was feeling rather awkward, and she started to wish that there was some way of getting out of her deal with Lucy. She realised now that Lucy fully expected to be caught, but was quite happy to take the consequences. By contrast, the thought of getting into official trouble with her aunt so early in her Chalet School career was making Mary feel decidedly sick. She glanced at her neighbour.
“Lucy!”
“H’mm?” Lucy did not look up from the notes she was writing.
“Can’t we do the game another lesson?”
Lucy put her pen down and raised her eyes to meet Mary’s. “Are you funking?” she demanded, her eyes glittering.
Mary’s own eyes became steely. “No!”
“Have you two got anything to contribute?” the Head asked. Mary realised with horror that her aunt was looking straight at them, and quickly dropped her eyes to the floor.
Lucy looked as innocent as she could. “No, Miss Annersley. Mary didn’t understand something, that’s all.”
The Head’s eyebrows shot up at this intelligence, but she said no more- for the moment. She watched them all the more closely, though.
Five minutes later, once the Head was ‘circulating’ to help the girls with their work, Lucy returned to her plan. With an eye out for Miss Annersley, she quickly drew up the grid and passed it across to her neighbour.
“You first,” she indicated in an undertone.
Mary glanced rather frantically from the Head to Felicity, who was looking sympathetic, but she put in a ‘nought’ all the same. The first game progressed well enough, and the second. On the third, Lucy and Mary were so deeply involved that they did not notice that Miss Annersley had moved down towards the back of the room, until a quiet voice interrupted them.
“I see you have finished.”
Mary dropped the pen- it was her turn- and turned scarlet. Lucy, who had managed to work in between times, looked virtuous. The Head glanced from one to the other, and decided that nothing would be served by coming down too hard at this point.
“I’ll give you two minutes,” she said softly, “and I expect you to have caught up with the rest of the class by then. If I catch you doing this again, the consequences will be more severe. Is that quite clear?”
“Yes, Miss Annersley,” said Lucy, looking as if butter wouldn’t melt.
The Head nodded and turned to her niece. “Mary?”
Mary looked up and caught the slight glint in her aunt’s eye. “Yes, Miss Annersley,” she replied, more quietly than Lucy had done. The Head nodded again, and moved away.

*aren't you people doing well tonight?!*

KB, what are you talking about? *befogged*

As soon as the Head had moved safely out of the immediate vicinity, Lucy turned back to her opponent. “Right. Let’s finish.”
“Lucy!”
Lucy only cast a scornful look at the other girl, and Mary bit her lip. She was beginning to see that Lucy was determined to get Mary herself into trouble, even if it meant sacrificing herself in the process. While she was thinking, Lucy thrust the grid back under Mary’s nose. Mary looked at it for a long moment, and put her pen down.
“What are you doing?” hissed her adversary.
“I’m not doing this anymore,” Mary told her flatly.
“So you are funking it!” Lucy said softly. “Funking, funking, funking! Can’t take a little trouble! Not that you’d get into any, as it happens.”
Mary’s face froze and she glared at Lucy. “What is that supposed to mean?”
Lucy wagged her head in Miss Annersley’s direction. “Well, she’s your aunt, isn’t she? She wouldn’t be nasty to her darling little baby niece, would she?”
Fortunately, Felicity overheard, and she flung her own pen down with a certain vehemence. “Lucy Peters!” Her voice was scornful- a tone that was really heard in Felicity’s silvery voice.
“What?”
“Leave Mary alone. As for not getting in trouble, I suppose you’ve never noticed me in trouble? The Head’s my aunt, too.”
“Not really!” argued Lucy.
Felicity glared. “Not really, not like Mary, no. But she may as well be. Which makes Mary my sort-of cousin!”
Lucy gave a funny gasp and subsided. Mary, looking gratefully at Felicity, found that the other girl was looking meditatively at Lucy.
“Is she always like this?”
Felicity gave her a hard look. “No. I don’t want to talk about it,” and she turned resolutely back to her work. Mary, seeing no help for it, did likewise. Miss Annersley, who had been watching them unobtrusively throughout, smiled to herself. If they had succeeded in disrupting her lesson, she would have dropped very heavily on them, but since they had not, she had been satisfied to stand back and let them thrash it out for themselves. As well as that, she was more than glad to see that her niece was more than capable of standing up for herself. The Head detested bullying, and would have quickly intervened if there had been any more of it, but at the same time, she was aware that her intervention may actually have served Mary badly in the longer term.

The dynamics amongst the girls are proving very interesting. Love Miss A's way of handling the situation.

So the languages thingie, they were speaking English outside of lessons, even during the day on German day, is that right, and should they have been?

Quick query, what's the GEM?

#152:  Author: Catherine_BLocation: Oxford, UK PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 1:56 am

GEM = Green Eyed Monster (of jealousy!)

Thank you, Lisa - and well done Mary for standing up for herself!

But how come they got away with talking at all in the Head's lesson? I'd have thought there'd have been complete silence!

#153:  Author: Sarah_LLocation: Redcar PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 2:09 am

Thanks Catherine, and I was wondering that about the talking too.

#154:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 2:46 am

Scripture is supposed to be more relaxed. Besides, have you ever tried imposing silence on that age group?! It either does not work, or if it does, it's likely to be repressive.
Don't worry about the languages Carolyn- I forgot that Monday was German day and had to make something up to cover the lapse! Wink

Still brilliant, Lisa!

Love that Mary has inherited Hilda's "look"
Love the interplay between the girls
Curious to find out more about Lucy's past (I always did wonder how easy it wouold have been for Phoebe to have a baby ... or was Lucy "really" adopted anyway? The line between EBD and Drabbles is forever blurring!)

#181:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Sun Feb 01, 2004 2:02 am

I remember the same - someone, most likely Joey, made a comment about the Peter's considering adopting a brother, but I don't remember it actually happening, and I'm not sure which book it was in, though I think it was one of the laterish ones, but if you want Lucy to have an adopted brother. Lisa, go ahead and make one, we won't mind, honestly.

Just realised this post has a surfeit of commas and a lack of full stops, sorry.

Have just read all this in one go. Lisa it's brilliant. Love Mary inheriting the look. My Gran had a look she used to give any of us who needed it and my cousin's youngest daughter who my gran hardly knew has inherited it. It is most peculiar to see it in a 6 year old.

More story please Exclamation

She's a bit too small to make us shut up etc. as my gran did but it is very spooky and you can't help wondering if she will turn out like my gran when she grows up. A very lovely lady but autocratic when she wanted to be.

Well, to keep you all happy- temporarily, I'm sure Laughing -here's more. It's intended as comic relief rather than part of the plot!
************

The lesson progressed as normal, and by the time the bell rang for the beginning of the fifth lesson, Lower IVa were more or less themselves. The Head looked keenly at her niece as that young lady passed her on the way out, and sighed to herself when she saw that the girl refused to meet her eye.
“Poor child,” she thought sympathetically. “She’s probably worrying about what I’ll say to her later. I wonder what’s gotten into Lucy Peters this term? I got the distinct impression that she engineered the whole affair.” Miss Annersley picked up her books and returned to the Study, still thinking deeply. She flung off her MA gown and sat down for a moment. Then, making a decision, she rose and slipped out through the French windows of her salon to cross the garden to Freudesheim.
“Is Mrs Maynard in, Anna?” Hilda asked as that worthy came to the door.
“Ja. She is in the salon. Do you wish to join her? I will get some coffee for you, and bring it to you. Some cream cakes, perhaps?” Anna finished with a twinkle. She had known Hilda Annersley for a long time now, and knew perfectly well that the Head had a decided weakness for anything of the kind.
Hilda laughed and expressed her thanks before slipping in through the door of the salon, expecting to find her friend alone. Instead, she saw that Joey was seated talking to a woman Hilda had never seen before.
“Oh, I beg your pardon, Joey. I’ll come back later, shall I?”
Joey Maynard turned a face full of mischief towards her. “No need, Hilda. Come in, do, and be introduced. Anna’s getting the refreshments. Does she know you’re here, by the by?”
Hilda nodded and sat down in the armchair she favoured, and smiled across at the stranger. “I do apologise for interrupting like this. I thought that Mrs Maynard was alone, and I wanted to consult her on something.”
Joey’s black eyes twinkled wickedly. “I wouldn’t worry, Hilda,” she began drily. “I believe my visitor has been looking forward to meeting you. Lesley, allow me to introduce you to your autocrat- Hilda Annersley. Hilda, Lesley Green is the new nurse at the San.”
“So I’ve heard,” the Head responded with equal dryness. “Pleased to meet you, Lesley. I suppose you know that your description of me has rejoiced my entire staff?” Hilda’s blue-grey eyes twinkled with fun, and Lesley blushed furiously before relaxing and laughing herself.

#205:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 1:03 am

N either. Call it an in joke! Wink I doubt she'll appear again- I wasn't in the correct frame of mind to write something logical, so i wanted a self contained scene that didn't need much of a follow-up. Voila!

#206:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 1:06 am

I wouldn't bank on it Lisa - strangely enough, that's what I did, or at least, it was what I meant to do, maybe Lesley has some sort of weird power over the other drabblers so they feel compelled to write her into their stories.

LISA!!!! MORE STORY PLEASE!

#254:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2004 11:10 pm

Blame KB and Vikki. Did I ever tell you people I don't like dead animals? (I'm not going to call it a phobia- you never know what Lesley or Rachel might do with it). No? I'm telling you now. Keep off that subject and you'll get more! Laughing

Seriously, though, I haven't been on much cos of the usual reason, also because my great grandmother is very ill-possibly dying, hospitals being what they are- and I had to nanny my cousin around the uni area to various interviews. However, I suppose I've got all night now, so I'll go and open the Real Niece file and see if inspiration bites. So...watch this space!! Wink

Thank you Lisa - Hope your Great grandmother comes through.

Oh Lisa honey! I'm sorry!! *crossing everything for your great granny* How old is she? And what's wrong?

#257:  Author: Lisa_TLocation: Belfast PostPosted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 12:17 am

She's 89, and she has a heart condition plus an infection. In and of themselves neither are fatal but she's weak and has gone downhill a lot lately, and basically my mum (who trained as a nurse) doesn't hold out much hope for her recovery. It's my mum's granny, BTW, and my grandmother's mum- at the moment, there are four generations of mother and daughter in my family- my great grandmother, my grandmother, my mother, and me- and my grandmother and great grandmother have never got on. If she dies, then it's hard to tell how it'll affect my grandmother emotionally, and a bad effect there will have a knock on impact on my mother and thus me.

Here's more story. It's not very upbeat but I'm not feeling very upbeat so- apologies in advance!!!

**********
They spent some twenty minutes or so in small talk before the nurse rose to go. After a exchanging various pleasantries and compliments in farewell, she left, and Hilda found herself alone with Joey.
“So what did you think?” Joey grinned as she turned from closing the front door.
“I think, Joey Maynard, that Lesley has been hearing tales out of school! I can’t think why she would call me an autocrat otherwise!”
Joey looked her most innocent self. “Well, you are well known on the Platz,” she pointed out smoothly. “Everyone knows who you are and what you are, and goodness knows, there’s enough Old Girls living here who know what you’re like. I can’t think why you should assume that I’m responsible for Lesley’s deductions!”
“Did I say you were responsible?” Hilda demanded, with a note in her voice that Joey knew.
She went faintly pink as she realised she had fallen into her own trap. “Well, no,” she admitted. “But you-“
“Yes, Joey?” the Head encouraged gently.
Jo decided to cut while she was ahead. “Nothing.” She gave her friend a wide smile. “What did you want to see me about?”
Hilda’s face became grave. “Do you know what’s wrong with Lucy Peters?”
“Lucy? No. She was here the other day, when you brought Mary over. She seemed OK then.”
“Yes, that’s true. All the same, there’s something going on there, but I’d rather not ask Phoebe at the moment. Do you know how she is, by the way?”
Joey frowned. “Jack’s rather concerned. I think he and Frank are talking about moving her into San again for a further period of treatment, but Phoebe herself doesn’t want to, and there’s the baby to consider. They’ve waited for so long to adopt a second child and Phoebe wants to spend as much time with her as possible.”
Hilda Annersley looked meditatively out of the window towards the Jungfrau. “Do you think that could be preying on Lucy’s mind? The adoption of the baby?”
“I suppose it could be. Why are you so sure there’s something wrong, anyway?”
“She’s been surly and uncooperative for a while, but nothing too out of the way, so I let it go. She’s now actively being disruptive- Ruth Derwent and Kathie Ferrars have both complained to me about her behaviour during the past week or so.” Hilda hesitated and Joey looked at her.
“There’s something else?”
“Yes, and I need to think about the best way to handle it. She seems to have taken a dislike to Mary. There was a scene in the Scripture lesson this morning, although I kept it as low-key as I could.” Hilda explained what had happened and her own response, and Jo listened thoughtfully.
“It’s difficult,” she agreed at last with a sigh. “If Lucy really did engineer the whole thing with the intention of getting Mary into trouble, then there’s a chance that since she failed this time, she’ll try again with something more serious at a later date. Were Felicity and Jean involved at all?”
“Jean wasn’t there- Matey pulled her out during Break. Toothache, I think. Felicity looked extremely anxious throughout the whole lesson, and I saw her looking at both Mary and Lucy from time to time.”
“And Mary herself?”
The Head sighed in her own turn. “She went along with Lucy, but she seemed reluctant. I don’t think she realised that I would be taking them, and she wouldn’t look at me as she left the room. I think she’s worried about what I’ll say to her later.”
“You can’t say anything,” Joey told her decidedly. She paused, and looked uncertainly at the Head. “May I say something, Hilda?”
Her friend smiled at her faintly. “Of course you may. What is it?”
“If I were you,” Joey began slowly, “I’d leave it this time. Another time, if you need to speak to her officially, do it in the Study or in her form-room, but never, ever talk to her as ‘the Head’ when you’re in your own private rooms. When you’re there with Mary, make sure you’re just ‘Auntie Hilda’ and that Mary knows that anything she says to you then will go no further.”
“But if it’s something I need to take official notice of?” the Head protested.
“Then you must find alternative ways of getting that information, or ask Mary to notify you through the normal channels. Nell Wilson could probably help, but it’s difficult. Are you sure that having her in the School is a good idea?”
Hilda looked at her, and then rose to her feet. She wandered over to the window, and spoke with her back to Jo. “I thought it was. I couldn’t see the difference between having Mary here, or-or your own children, for instance. But there are differences, and resulting difficulties. Your children have known certain things from infancy, and of course, when they’ve boarded they’ve always been in dormitories rather than in the Annexe.
“Mary chose to stay with me there, and I certainly won’t insist that she go into a dormitory before she makes that choice herself. As well as that, I think I’m having trouble personally in adjusting to this role. I’m accustomed to being the Head, to being a brevet aunt, but I’m not used to actually being a parent as opposed to simply being in loco parentis in legal terms.” Hilda paused for a moment, and Joey waited in sympathetic silence for her to continue.
When she did, her voice was very quiet. “Jo, I need your help. I’m not sure I can do this!”

Glad to see Joey providing such good advice ...
