The CBB -> Cookies & Drabbles

#1: A project Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Thu Feb 05, 2004 1:45 pm

OK I'm not that good at serious stuff but here goes. it's set in the english branch -cos i want the girl doing A level history.

"The chalet school was...On a ... Margaret Bettany founder of the chalet school..." The girl sighed as she drafted her investigation. "The chalet school has influenced..." she flicked through the neat folder of paperwork on her desk. (authors coments-Not like me-my folder is my house!)
As she flicked through pages of typed interviews she came across an older one from the files of information the head had given her.
"Draft of The Chalet School: a Personal history
Josephine M Bettany." SHe picked it up and started to read.

"To begin at the beginning. I was the Chalet School's first ever pupil, and, the one person who has been with the school through all its ups and downs, from that first discussion in Cornwall to the Governor's meeting yesterday, which I believe may mean that this history is necessary.
I remember that day in Cornwall as if it were yesterday..."

Here you go, its a start as my other drabbles nearly finished i thought i'd start a new one. And its SCS for once, I hope! Get your tissue boxes ready cos i want to make it a bit of a weepie!

"... I was reading, Quention Durwood, as far as I remember when Dick called me downstairs. Iwas nervous, and excited as far as I remember. When my sister explained her plan I was so excited, I'd longed to go to boarding school for years, and Austria? Well that little holiday there had meant so much to me! Yes, the school at the Chalet seemed like an adventure, and it was!"
Below, a photo was clipped onto the page, it showed a tall, blond haired man and a dark haired woman, next to a small girl, with a thin face and dark hair. "Dick, Madge and I, just before we left." was scribbled below.
The girl turned the page and read on.

Interview was OK, but I'm not sure whether I want to go to UMIST-its so BIG!
Applied maths was evil!
But just had 3hrs physics-and that suprisingly was OK-V. v. tiring though!

Not sure how long this bit's going to be.

The girl read on, it was mostly reminicances, a good description of Simone Lecoutier, a map of the original school and a bit on the first prefects... Now this bit looked good it was a short chapter titled simply, Tiern Joch

I have 8 essays a term but I can write an essay (inc. research) in a day! And you can just make it up really, as long as sheep or the spanish aristocracy are in there somewhere you can just ramble on about how what historians have said is a load of rubbish and your idea is much better.

Edith, two lines hardly counts at all. Please post more!

#63:  Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:50 pm

Now, the Tiern Joch was one of the early challenges that have plagued the school ever since. The first inkling I had that the day was going to go horribly wrong was in the kitchen...

The problem with starting a drabble is that you keep getting demands for more!!!!! Even when you haven't had time to write anything!

#76:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2004 7:57 pm

One way to solve this is to write it all first and then put it up and just say you haven't written any more.

Not that I would ever do such a thing!

#77:  Author: SusanLocation: Carlisle PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 1:23 am

I have tried to keep a part in reserve but it doesn't always work out. RL interfered too much and I had to use it

#78:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 8:39 am

I tried that too, but the voracious readers don't really let you...

#79:  Author: PatLocation: Doncaster PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 11:18 am

Frustrating, isn't it?! Laughing

#80:  Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 1:54 pm

The girl sighed, what followed was a pile of self praise and waffle. Flicking through the first section of the book, there was alot of information on this section. Then she came to a more interesting chapter. "The end of the austrian dream."
She read on.
"By 1938 the school had expanded considerably, as had the san, my family and my work. Then came a new threat...Nazism! It brought a forced move for the school, alot of pain for many of those i knew well, and perversely enough, a great happiness.
I found out from Jem (a footnote gave the famous doctor's full name) about the threat from Nazi germany along with the staff of the school, and from then on Austria changed from a paradise into a threat...

OK I'll go back to this bit i can modify this post i hope!

The girl flicked through the book, the move to Guernsey, then to Plas Howell and finally St Briavels. Then back to the continent. Far from being a history of the school, it appeared to be an autobiography-still it was interesting...
The girls grew up and left Len was headgirl, then Felicity, Cecil and Phil. Then it was the last two chapters, these had been pencilled in and seemed to have been written in a hurry.

"I guess Mum would have wanted me to finish this, she's made a real mess of it this time, Dad's gone to sort it out- the schools OK thank goodness but the family's in ruins. It all started a few months back...

#108:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2004 6:50 am

Oh, golly, that doesn't sound good! I hope we find out what happens soon! Not that I glory in the misery of others, you understand...

#109:  Author: edithLocation: Shropshire/Powys/my own mind! PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2004 5:21 pm

"As you would have read, the school went co-ed a while back. Suzanne Little, one of Mum's adopted nieces was the first headgirl and an english boy, Adam King was headboy. A big mistake as it turned out...
I don't know why we never realised this could happen, or that we were too blinkered to see that it was.
The first clue I had was when Suzanne came over for the weekend and she seemed-well wrong. I can't describe exactly how I felt but I guessed what was wrong, I'd seen it before, I'm from a large family and I'd seen my older sisters like that. I told Phil, who agreed with me and she went and tackled Suzanne, cos I couldn't.
Well to keep this brief, Suzanne was pregnant and Adam was the father. As a catholic I don't agree with abortian but I suggested it to Suzanne, because, well it was her choice and I wasn't sure that a child would be a good idea.
Well, Suzanne refused-very loudly, and shouted at both of us. At that point Mum came in.

She was furious!
First she thought it was me, but when she-eventually found out what had happened she went over to the school to sort it out. She's threw Suzanne out and Dad had to find somewhere for her to stay. Then she went over to the school...

We don't know what she said to this day, but the result of it was that she was asked to leave the meeting and vowed never to reurn...
Dad too was furoius, but with Mum, they had been argueing a lot recently and we had no idea how serious it was becoming. Well Phil and I came over one evening to see Dad staring at the fire...

"She's gone..." he said. She just picked up a suitcase and threw her wedding ring at me. I'm sorry."
I don't think I'll ever forgive her for that, but I suppose it's evil to speak wrong of the dead, or whatever the phrase is but she should nevert have done that. Dad still doen't know what has happened, all I know is that Len came home from school to say that Mum had visited the school to say that she had left, and that she was sticking beside Dad. But not all the family felt the same way.
We didn't hear anything for weeks until there was a letter from firstly Charles and then Margot. Margot has always been a live-wire but she's sensible and although she's a nun she has a lot of sense and KNOWS about suffering-being a medical missionary. SHe said that Mum had acted out of order and that if she turned up on her doorstep-unlikely as Margot is somewhere in deepest darkest Africa-she'd be turned away. CHarles' letter however scolded Dad for three pages full of things about the evils of abortion and loving one's wife. Mum was staying with him.
It took quite a while for the remains of the family to settle down, but we just had, Dad was taking an active role in the school as well as the san now and Phil had run a tea-party at freudeshiem for the new girls when the news arived...

Thank you for posting more Edith -very intriguing - especially seeing that Charles supported Joey but the others all seem to support Jack.

Please may we learn what happened at the School Meeting???

Also noted the little phrase 'speak wrong of the dead' - assuming it means Joey - nice little cliff!

More soon please!

I had to open it, Dad still would not have anything to do with Charles, and to be frank I don't think he could have coped with it. I was working at the time, I'd just finished the quote for a new extention to the school and Phil had just got to the san

bells just gone gotta get to history sorry

It was brief and to the point. Mum was dead, she'd had a heart attack but Charles pinned the blame on Dad. Well we were shocked, least of all Dad, and even more shocked when we saw the will. SHe had rewritten it a few days before anmd Charles got all her money and the rights to all her books. She did not leave ANYTHING to the school as she had originally planned and said that it was their fault for betraying her, I never believed my mother could be SO selfish, especially as none of us were even allowed to go to her funeral...

I HAVE TO!
I had 9hrs exams since friday.

So, that's it really." the writer concluded. "My family has been torn apart. Mum's dead and Dad, well he's losing it slowly. Phil's had to do more and more of his shifts. My family has been torn apart. It's sad to say this but it's the schools fault for tearing it apart and yet it's holding the remains together.
Dad's just arrived home now. He's beenat the school giving a talk on recent developments in medicine. Its strange that, it always used to be Mum that bucked up the school, but now the going's got tough, it's Dad that's holding it together.
Well. I'd better go now. I've got to put the kettle on for Phil when she returns. She's a doctor at the san you see, and a very good one, a cancer specialist. Well cheerio.
Geoff Maynard."

The girl put down the last page of the manuscript.
"Still reading that?" came a voice from behind her.
"Yeah..."
"Let's see... Your Dad wrote this last bit."
"Yeah."
"You still miss him?"
"Of course. It's only been a year since he died."
"Cancer wasn't it?"
