Hello Folks.
It seemed that youy apreciated my very first drabble. Your mistake. It inspired me to write another one.Hope you like it.

A new problem in Chalet school

Miss Annersely was sitting in her room. It was dark. The windows were closed. Spiders were busy building webs in the room and also between Miss Annersely hands and feet. Her face was serious but she was angry. “How dare Joey? Really it was very inconsiderate of Joey. She should have consulted her first.” Suddenly the absurdity of the thought struck her and she giggled. But again her face became serious “ What am I going to do? There had never been such a problem in school”, she thought. “ Well, it would have been better if I had accepted the proposal from the teacher I met during my training.” She thought of the problem. It was a new girl who had joined. Her parents were doctors and had come to learn the new methods of treating the dreaded disease. In the first place she was and Indian and Miss Annersely had not forgotten the problems with Lilamani.Secondly this girl refused to eat meat or fish or beef or bacon. You get the picture. She was a vegetarian. It had been a real headache to adjust her meals. And now this new problem.

**************************************************
In the staff room the teachers were discussing the problem.” Wish Joey was here.” Were the most mentioned words. It puzzled Miss Seymour who was new this year. She had joined as a second secretary to the Head. She turned to Kathy and asked “But why do thy need Joey? And who is Joey?”
“Joey is Joey. That is all how I can describe her. She is a famous writer. You must have read her books. She writes school stories and also historical novels,” replied Kathy “Joey is the spirit of the school She knows all about girls. She understands them. And it becomes easier for her to talk to girls. They find it difficult if the Head tells them It seems like preaching. Most of the girls are her fans and therefore respond better to her.”

It had never occured to me how difficult it would be for a vegetarian at the Chalet School. Can't help wondering how they'd cope with pupils who had dairy- or gluten-free dietary requirements (and as a nut-allergy sufferer, it always annoyed me how much EBD goes on about those honey-nut cakes...)

Thanks Mohini, please write some more as soon as you can!

I must admit I'd often wondered if all that milk and caffeine was really good for teenagers, so a veggie point of view should be interesting.

More please!

Intrigued and greatly looking forward to more.
I wonder what the problem is . . .

It is a really interesting idea to look at things from a vegetarian point of view, it would certainly be very different to anything typical of the CS.

There IS a drabble somewhere in the archives about a Lactose intolerant girl coming to the CS. I just can't remember what it's called!

“She is like a breath of fresh air. She drives the cobwebs away,” said Rosalie.
Miss Seymour had a sudden vision of the Head sitting in her room with all windows closed and spiders building webs around her. A giggle was arising inside her and to cover it she turned to Rosalie. “But she is not a mistress in school is she?” asked Miss Seymour confused. “So why does she interfere in school matters?”
A young and pretty Mistress who was addressed as Con by others rose and beckoned her to come out. ‘It would be better if you do not criticize Mother” “Mother ----?”
“Yes She is my mother and all the staff and specially the head rely on her to solve the problems.” “But you do not seem to like it.” “I love my Mom. But she never helps us. Every time we had problems the Head scolded us. But if it is any other girl then Mother is called. It is so unfair. She is not interested in us.”
“That’s not true Con” said Rosalie who had come and caught Con’s words” She loves you and does not interfere as she may be accused of favoring her girls.”
“But where is she? Why isn’t she here?”
“Joey is expecting a wire.” Answered Rosalie.
“Well she can come here can’t she? The telegraph office can deliver it here.’
“No. No No.” said Rosalie blushing. “Not that type of wire. She is expecting an addition in her family.”
Then seeing the confused look, Rosalie whispered in Miss Seymour’s ears. “Oh! You mean she is having a baby! How strange! Hasn’t she recently become a grandmother? Oh How funny!!!! If she has a daughter her daughter and her granddaughter will be in the same class”
Rosalie looked shocked and resolved to remove Miss Seymour from school as soon as possible.

**************************************************

Jack was anxiously waiting outside his wife’s room. He knew that Miss Annersely was waiting for Joey to be free. But really it was too much of Hilda. She kept on involving Joey in school’s affair and not let her grow up. He needed a wife and not a schoolgirl. He tried to keep Joey interested in family by seeing that she had kids at regular intervals. At least for few days or weeks she would not be thinking of school. He hoped that at least now he would have a son and not a daughter. The door opened and the doctor came out with the latest addition. Jack stared at dismay at the 4 babies.
Joey had done it again. She had the Quads she promised. But all boys. All was snow lost. He had to stop now as promised to Joey.

Sorry folks. The monster entered and I seem to be wandering away from the drabble. Will return on track .

I like the idea that Jack keeps letting Joey have babies to take her mind off the Chalet school for a week or two! I never thought of it like that before!

Nice to see those quads she was threatening for so long!

Looking forward to more!

Joey looked at her latest addition and heaved a sigh of relief.” What had made her say that she wanted Quads”, she thought. At least now everyone would say that she has kept her promise. And Jack would not insist on more babies. It was all right for him to want but she was getting tired.
It was a real headache to think of names of babies and to show everyone how much she loved them. She did love her kids but when they were away. New babies meant restriction to her movements and she hated that. It also meant responsibilities and she did not like it. She had loathed growing up and now with so many kids and she becoming a grandmother, she would now have to grow up.
She wanted to have her finger in every school activity and babies for sometime restricted her actions.
There was this new girl and she had not yet welcomed her properly. She had of course met her but somehow found that the girl was not ready to fall under her spell. She had read her books but Joey was not her favorite author. That must change soon.
She looked and Jack as he entered the room and smiled “I know you want me to sleep. Please let me talk to Hilda once and then I will obey you.”
“You’re tired my dear”
“Please Jack!!!!!”
“Alright”
Jack called the school. The phone was picked up at first ring.” Joey is it you? Please help me!!!!!!!” Cried Hilda before Jack could say a thing. “Now Hilda!!!! Don’t you want to congratulate Joey?” “Yes. Congratulations Joey! Can you help me?”
“What’s the problem?”
This new girl. Her parents have come here to learn new techniques and insisted that we should let her join the school for this term.”
“Yes!!!”said Joey impatiently.
“She is a vegetarian and ----”
“ And what Hilda?”
“She insists on wearing her traditional dress in evening instead of frocks or skirts. What can I do?”
“Tell the kid that she should live in Rome like Romans do. As the other girls wear skirts or frocks she should do the same”
“Oh. Thank you Joey!!!!!!”

****************************************************

Hilda replaced the receiver and turned happily to look at the staff that had gathered at the sound of the ring. “Really Joey is like a breath of fresh air. She has driven all the cobwebs away.” All the spiders that had been building their web had fled at the sound of Joey. The windows also were flung open and fresh air was moving around the room.
“How is Joey?’” asked Kathy. “Did she have a girl or a boy?”
“ Oh I do not know I forgot to ask”
“Oh well we will know it soon. Jack will come with the glad tidings. Did Joey tell you how to solve the problem?”
“But what is the problem? I do not know,” asked Miss Seymour sounding puzzled.
“The new girl refuses to wear skirts or frocks after the school like all the other girls. She insists on wearing her traditional dress”
“But she is living in a school and she should follow the rules and live in Roman like Romans do” said Miss Seymour
Hilda looked startled. That was exactly what Joey had said. Had this new staff been listening on the extension?

Brilliant Mohini!

There's lots and lots of inspired stuff in that bit - I wanted to quote from it but would be repeating the whole post!

Fascinating to think of Joey not really wanting babies because they tie her down, and only really liking her children when they are away...!

And I am starting to really like Miss Seymour!

Wonderful, I like the different perspective from Joey that having children restricts her movements in the school.

*Also really liking Miss Seymour*

Mohini, this is really good. Like the new ideas on Jo and Jack. Like seeing Hilda so wrapped in her own problems she forgot to ask what Jo had had.

More soon please.

She stood before the staff. The staff looked at her taking in her long black wavy hair, clear brown eyes and her native dress. As dresses went this wasn’t bad. She wore long full baggy pants and her shirt was long nearly up to her knees and she had a scarf of same color around her neck. She looked elegant. “ Do you know why you are called here?” asked the Head. “No” she replied. “You should not wear such dresses here. You should wear a skirt or a frock”
“Why?” she asked politely “I wear school dresses during school hours.”
“But the rest of the girls do not wear such clothes”
“What is wrong with these clothes? They look decent”
“It is not a question of looking decent. No! I do not mean that. You should wear clothes like other girls do. Or else you would stand out among other girls. Do you want that? You should behave in Rome like Romans do”
“Do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Behave in Rome like Romans”
“What has that got to do here? I have never been to Rome.”
“I do not mean to be rude. But really English people are fond of saying this phrase ‘live in Rome like Romans do’ but they themselves do not follow it”
“I do not understand what you are saying”
“When English people come to India, they wear their style of clothes, they follow their own way and think all customs and ways of our country to be backwards. Why should we follow the native customs they feel? We are from developed country and we do not believe in old fashioned ideas.”
“So your idea behind wearing your native dress is to teach us a lesson?” asked Miss Seymour. “But if you think what we did was wrong is it correct to make the same mistake?”
“Well I did not think about it. I am sorry. Please forgive me.I will go and change my dress now”
**************************************************
“I feel Miss Seymour you should leave now. We no longer need your services.” Said the Head turning to Miss Seymour. She had hated interference by the secretary’s secretary.
“Let us now call Joey and learn about he new baby”
“Wouldn’t you like to know it from their father?” asked jack entering.
“Their?” queried Kathy “You mean Joey had twins?” “Triplets again?” Asked Rosalie as Jack shook his head at Kathy’s question.
“No Quads. And all 4 boys”
“Oh No!!!!!!!” Cried Miss Annersely and promptly fainted in Rosalie’s arms.
