A Tiernsee Reunion - Part 1

#1: A Tiernsee Reunion - Part 1 Author: LouLocation: Glasgow PostPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2004 12:45 am

Joey Maynard tiptoed through the house and pulling her kimono tightly around her opened the kitchen door quietly. The door creaked and she tried to shut it behind her without causing too much sound. “I must get that door oiled or I’ll be waking all sundry up” she thought as she ran made her way through the garden to the boathouse.

She slipped the key into the lock and was soon pulling the smaller of the rowing boats out and onto the slipway. Jumping into the boat when she hit the water, she pulled on the oars and was soon heading towards the middle of the lake.

She loved these early morning jaunts. Looking back at her house, once the school housing St Scholastika she thanked her lucky stars for being so lucky and having a summer home on her beloved Tiernsee.

She let the oars go and allowed the boat to drift. The steamer was yet to start it’s first journey up the lake and she felt safe as she settled back and reviewed her surrounds.

“What luck it was meeting Herr Helfen just when he wanted to sell the house.” She mused, “and even more luck that Jack was willing to sell Plas Gwyn and buy this. It makes for a much better holiday than going all the way to England and let’s face it the weather’s much better, particularly now at Easter time”. She looked around her at the views, Giesalm on her left and further round the lake her beloved Briesau. “Almost I can feel sixteen again when I’m here, if only the old crowd were all here too.”

At this thought Joey scrambled about in the boat and very nearly overturned into the lake. Grabbing at the oars she chastised herself for being silly but her eyes held a glint which if any of her family had seen they would have immediately known she was plotting.

“Of course, just exactly why not!” she exclaimed. “Surely some of them would be able to come, it’s only mid-April now, if I plan it for summer that’s giving loads of notice”

Joey threw her long black plaits over her shoulder, took up the oars again, turned the boat around and headed back to shore.

“Here comes Mamma back from the lake” said Len watching from the window while they were setting the table for frustuck in the speisesaal.

“Has she been swimming? I thought she said it was too early in the season for that, she might have woken us and then we could all have gone” grumbled Margot.

“No she’s been in Percy” retorted Len “And you know fine well that it’s too cold as yet”.

Why do you all insist on naming every inanimate object we have?” groaned Margot, “and most especially, why Percy?”

Before Len could answer a perfect stampede could be heard on the stairs and the boys and the Richardsons appeared.

“Is that coffee Len?” shouted Stephen throwing himself down in his allotted chair and making a long arm for the bread twists.

“Yes it is, but there’s no need to behave like chimps at a tea party, ask for twists and don’t lean over the table, there you go that was predictable” Len rushed to the table with a cloth to mop up the milk which had spilled, the result of Stephen knocking over the jug. “Ruey, come and pour the coffee, Con bring some more milk from the kitchen and goodness just sit down all of you”

Stephen settled down with Roger on one side and Roddy on the other. Margot and Ruey sat opposite them with Felicity in between. Charles, Mike and Felix took their seats farther down the table and Len helped Cecil into her seat between her own and Cons.

A shout from the hall sent Stephen to help his father bring in the post. It was small sack that morning and Jack sat at his place at the head of the table and immediately opened it and started dishing out the letters.

“One for you each of you Rs, from Daisy by the looks of it, one for you Con, one for Margot and two for Len. Three for Stephen, what’s happening to your friends Stephen that they’re starting to write? They’ve never been so keen before and yes half a dozen for your mother.” Jack looked up, “Where is your mother? I saw her coming back from the lake at least 10 minutes ago?”

“I’m here Jack,” said Joey bounding into the room and taking the post from his hands. “Oh good, one from Simone, one from Hilda, one from the publisher and Mary-Lou as well” she sat back in chair, almost bouncing and looking like the cat who had got the cream. Unable to keep her secret any longer she banged her cup with a spoon for silence and announced, “I’VE HAD A BRAIN-WAGGLE”.

Everyone stopped and looked at her. “Mamma, phwats a bwainwaggel?” piped up small Cecil looking rather sheepish as she knew she had jam smeared over her chin. For once Joey took no notice of table manners,

“Jack what do you say to having a proper reunion, here at the Tiernsee, and trying to get hold of all the old crowd, you know really making enquiries to find out about those we lost contact with, advertising in the papers and inviting them all to visit for a weekend.” Joey sat back and allowed her words to sink in.

“Where on earth would we put everyone Joey?” asked Jack, always an hospitable man he couldn’t fathom how they could squeeze any more into the house.

“Well, I was thinking that we could impose on Irma over at the Chalet, if we plan far enough in advance we could ask Herr Braun to book out the Kron Prinz Karl, there’s the Stephanie and the Post. Jack I’m talking about more than a house party, I mean a really proper event. Surely enough time has passed now that we could advertise in German papers and try to bring as many back together as possible. Of course we would have quite a few to stay here, the brats won’t mind being on top of each other for once and we have plenty of ground to pitch tents if need be. In fact if we get enough interest they can always stay in Spartz or Innsbruck. What do you think?”

Jack sat back and surveyed his wife. He was well aware that at times she could be morose about contacts lost before the Anschluss and during the war. “Well I think you should talk to Hilda, Nell and Madge about it. If, as you say, it’s more than just an invite to friends then it would need some organisation. But on the whole why not look into it”.

Joey sat back, her eyes shining, “Well I don’t think we should limit it to just the Austrian years, we really should invite anyone who has ever been at the school.”

“My good girl, that would mean thousands, there was 200 odd when we left Austria plus hundreds coming through in England, Wales and now Switzerland, maybe you shouldn’t set your sights so high and while I’m thinking about it, you should also realise that there may be some girls that no matter what adverts you put out they won’t be able to come and they may be unreachable.” His words were sensible but his tone was soft and Joey nodded.

“I’ll walk round to see Irma later and Herr Braun and float the idea with them and Hilda is arriving tomorrow so we’ll talk it through then.”

“Oh, mamma that is such a miraculous idea, it would be so much fun to meet everyone from the Dark Ages and here where it happened” Con’s eyes went to the window and glazed over as she remembered all her mother’s stories.

“Hmmm less of the dark ages young lady. Right come on everyone finish up and lets get all the chores done so that we can think this through properly and visit Irma.” Joey set to with her coffee and soon they were leaving the table heading off for bedmaking and pondering their visit around the lake.

“Well Joey, I think you’ve done it. Quite how I’m not sure, but we seem to be ready to place the adverts.” Hilda Annersley sat back in her chair in her salon at Freudesheim and helped herself to another of Anna’s famous hot cakes.

“Well I will admit, it hasn’t been entirely easy. Good old Herr Braun was very willing to provisionally book the rooms but I really had to twist some arms at the Post and the Stephanie but Irma helped, she’s been a godsend really.” Joey continued to pour the tea for Rosalie and Bill.

“So we’ve got our quota of accommodation, exactly how many can actually book Joey?” asked Rosalie.

“Well, Jack and I have worked out that we can take twenty, Irma can take between fifty and sixty depending if people don’t mind sharing, oh and she’s persuaded the hydro-electric managers who have the other chalets to take some as well so the old St Clare’s can take forty-odd and Le Petit Chalet can take thirty. Then the Kron Prinz Karl can take one hundred and ten, the Stephanie eighty, the Post seventy and the various Gasthauses around the lake can take another sixty. So before we head off to Spartz and Innsbruck that’s potential for around four hundred.” Jo let out a huge sigh. “Do you think we’ve bitten off more than we can chew, we did have to give them a deposit!”

“Nonsense” said Bill, “it’s only good business practise, they’ll come out of the woodwork and I know a lot of the Plas Howell lot will come. But where are we placing the adverts?”

“Well,” said Hilda “I’m trusting to the main newspapers in the bigger cities, we’re covering Paris, Vienna, London, Edinburgh, Bonn, Frankfurt and Rome, on and Sydney and Wellington down below. I’m hoping that maybe one person will see and get in touch with others or get in touch with us with other ideas.”

“Hilda, what about America and Canada? We know Corney, Lulu and Bette are all over there, what about them? Joey exclaimed, “I don’t want them missing out!”

“Well exactly Joey, we know exactly where they are, we hardly need to advertise, Rosalie is putting together an invitation with instructions to everyone where we know their address.”

“Of course, you’re right, I’m just so thrilled that we’ve got this far” Joey took up the piece of paper that Hilda had brought over and regard it.

I read "Stephen" for the first time tonight, all the way through, yes made me cry and it's a fantastic story. But there's a little bit of me feels that we demonise the Josephine and I just fancied going back a little and trying to find the old "nice" one again. But keep going on Stephen please please Sarah, it is brilliant......

#57:  Author: LouLocation: Glasgow PostPosted: Thu Feb 26, 2004 12:25 pm

OY! Hold on everyone! I am white with tension and angst......

I feel I should point out right now - so as not to upset anyone - that this is not intended as a fill-in/continuation. And therefore as a drabble I am going to fulfill my childhood/teenage/adult wish and make up histories/happenings for lots of characters we haven't heard of for a while.

I will not be researching through the hardbacks (I've only got Jane/Changes/Kenya in hardback).

I shall of course be checking on my spellings / relationships etc from the paperbacks.

But it is purely wish fulfillment and a bit of fun. Although I will not be bringing anyone back from the dead - that's beyond even me....

THANK YOU everyone for your "personal pets" I can assure you that most of them will be appearing at the Tiernsee. Hoping to post the next section on Monday........

Rather appropraite for this board, but rather sick making to watch.
