#1: Stephen Maynard Author: VikkiLocation: Possibly in hell! It's certainly hot enough....... PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2004 6:14 pm

This is a first drabble from Sarah_K (and a very promising one too!!) There was only one installment so far, so I'm cutting and pasting!!

Sarah_K wrote:

I've always felt badly for Joey's boys. They seem to get so little attention from their mother. This is a very short thing that came into my head (not planning anymore just yet, sorry) It's my first drabble too *nervous smile*

Stephen Maynard had finally had enough. He had lived long enough with the knowledge that his mother didn't love him or her other sons as much as she loved her daughters but now she'd gone too far. He'd put up with the fact that she couldn't bear to let her daughters go and yet sent her sons off to boarding school as soon as possible. He'd lived with the fact that she barely remembered that he had been Head Boy of his school whilst she heaped praise on Len for being Head Girl. Stephen had even managed to keep quiet when Joey had commented that he should have picked a nice Chalet School Girl loudly at his wedding to Josie. Since his marriage he'd had as little to do with his mother as he could whilst trying to keep close to his brothers and make sure there was someone to celebrate their triumphs. Dad was good, he did his best, but he was so busy and anyway he was under mother's thumb. When Felix had made the Rugby team it had been Stephen who'd visited to congratualte him. When Chas had gained the highest marks in his first year at university it was Stephen who'd written to Aunts and Uncles across the globe to tell them of the triumph. Today though, today she had pushed him that little bit too far. At the birth of Christopher, his first son, Stephen had been estatic and the family had celebrated, even Joey had seemed to focus on her eldest son for once. Today it was Len's turn to learn the joys of parenthood. Stephen had sat with the others watching Reg pace up and down and had melted at the sight of Meg his first neice but then Joey had managed to destry the happy mood. She had refered to Meg as her first grandchild. She had forgotten all about Chris. Stephen could forgive her for forgetting him, he could live with her treating his brothers badly but she was not going to forget his precious child so easily. Luckily for all concerned Len didn't take after her mother quite as much as all that and pointedly reminded Joey that she meant first Grandaughter. Everyone laughed, wasn't that just like Joey. Len met Stephen's eyes and his rage fell away, what else had he expected?

Ooh, that's an interesting start Sarah. I'm as bad as Joey, I never gave much thought to the boys. Though I always loved the description of them all going on holiday together (which ever book it was where they got the minibus) because we saw the boys together for the first time.

Whenever you write more of this, I'd love to read it.

Thank you Vicki and Nicci and all the other people who reviewed at the old board. I'd love to write more but I don't think I have enough books to know enough about Stephen and the other boys, I'd be forever making mistakes. If the bunny comes back I'll have a go.

Sarah K I do hope the bunny bites you. I always wanted to write somehting about the boys, but was never sure where to start. I am so glkad that you have started this.

Please have a good think about adding some more, soon. Razz

Please try to continue! It doesn't matter if there are small errors. For one thing we know so little about the boys that most people won't notice anyway and if you have any questions I'm sure someone on the board can help.

#10:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2004 9:32 pm

Sarah, do go on with this when you can. It's a side of CS we hardly ever look at. I must admit, I never thought of the boys' feelings when shunted off to boarding school in another country! Don't forget EBD wasn't exactly constistent and look at the variations we've had in the girls' lives. At this moment Len is either dead or has miscarried, Robin is either in Peru or France, Margot is either a nun or gone missing with a child. Con is either pregnant or recovering from a drugs overdose (not her fault, I know). Madge is either coming to terms with the fact that Daisy and Primula do not have the parents she thought or blowing up the world ( Twisted Evil ).

I've only been a member 2 weeks and all those variations have happened!

Go for it. It's good and refreshing. *packs up loads of self confidence for Sarah and shoves them down the modem*

Great job Sarah, now that you've your first over you, it will probably be easier to post the next time.

I can never think of anything but each time I read somebody else's I always think 'why didn't I think of that'.

Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to more already.

Embarassed Thank you everyone! I've sort of got a vague idea of another bit I'm working on but don't expect it till tomorrow or Thursday as I really must finish my seminar reading.

Anyone who has their books nearby... do we ever know the name of the school the boys attend (assuming they all go to the same one!)

I don't think that they do go to the same school. Though maybe they were just separated by age. Cannot remember which book I got that idea from though.

I don't remember ever seeing a name for the boys school, except that there's some talk of sending Mike to Dartmouth (a naval school) when he's old enough, somewhere!

Thanks guys, I'd forgotten about the naval thing for Mike but I figure I'll just make up a school for the rest of them.

For some reason I had it in mind that the boys attended Rugby.

Isn't it interesting how vague we all are on the boys, but can spout chapter and verse about the girls!

Looking forward to more, and will send a badger if that will help Sarah K?

I have to admit that I never really think of the boys that much, they've certainly been badly neglected.

Here's a little bit more for you, the bunny came back last night Very Happy *glares at Vicki* (not that I didn't think that too after I posted it but it was meant innocently enough Embarassed )

Stephen flew back to London the day after Meg's birth as was he unable to get any more time off work. Stephen loved his job, working for a publishing company in the city, and he knew he was lucky to have got it straight out of university but he wished he could have stayed with his sisters for a bit. As he walked down the road towards the flat he and Lucy had moved into after their wedding 18 months ago he remembered his mother's parting words. She'd been complaining that London air must be bad for Lucy's health and it was hardly the place for a child to grow up.
I suppose I should be thankful she's remembered Chris
Stephen pulled such a face at the memory of Joey's mistake after Meg's birth that a passerby stopped to check he wasn't ill. The flat was on the ground floor and had access to a shared garden at the back. Coming from the natural beauty of the Gornetz Platz he could see how shabby the outside of the building looked but when he saw Lucy in the window he forgot about comparisons and ran up the steps to the front door to greet his young wife.
"Well?"
Lucy looked like one huge question mark, desperate to hear the news of her sister-in-law.
"Hold on, let me get inside first! That's hardly the welcome home I expected."
In response Lucy stuck her tongue out and pulled Stephen in the door and into their living room. When he was sitting comfortably with a cup of coffee in his hand and Chris playing on the floor Stephen finally turned to Lucy and calmly enquired what exactly it was she wanted to know. Throwing up her hands in disgust Lucy sighed.
"How's Len? and Reg? and the babe? is it a boy or a girl? Did Con get there in time?"
"That's a lot of questions!"
Stephen smiled at his wife and pulled her down onto the sofa beside him.
"Len and Reg are both fine, Con arrived with a few hours to spare despite her train from Paris being delayed and Margaret Jane Entwhistle is as fine a child as anyone could have hoped for."
Glad to have finally got the news Lucy relaxed and hugged her husband.
"I'm glad you're home."

Lovely to have more of this. Such a contrast between Stephen's more modern outlook and Joey's time warped one.

Just read the reply about Mike going to Dartmouth - that was Joey & Jack's idea of keeping him out of mischief and because he loved water - I wonder whether Mike agreed and what happened to him. did he kick the traces and go his own way too.

I sat all the way though my seminar this afternoon trying to work out relative ages of various cousins *facepalms* I guess I won't be answering on Gibbon in my exam.
typing
Here's some more, I sort of know where this is going now but it's really odd writing little bits at a time I don't know how most of you do it!

Life settled back to normal very quickly. Len sent a lovely description of Meg's christening. Rosamund Lilley, Dorothy Mackenzie and Paul Duncan, a friend of Reg's, were chosen as God parents. Len's account of how Cecil managed to create a sensation by tripping over her feet and nearly landing in the christening cake was almost as clear and amusing as any of the accounts Joey had written of similar family events. Stephen visited Felix and Geoff at school to tell them first hand of Len and Meg and also spent an enjoyable day with Charles in Oxford. It was hard convincing him to take time off these days, after finishing his Classics degree top of the class Charles was studying hard for his PHD. It looked like he was settling down a to an academic's life which pleased Stephen as he'd never been able to work out what Charles wanted to do with his life. Mike of course was stationed somewhere in the Pacific so visiting him was impossible but Stephen sent him a description of Meg's birth and included Len's account of the christening. Sometimes Stephen thought about the fact that, with Mike sailing halfway round the world and Margot somewhere in the jungle, they were never going to get the whole family togther again. They were still close though and kept in regular contact so most of the time it didn't bother him. With work eating up most of his days and Chris most of his evenings Stephen didn't really have much time for thinking about the way his family worked in any great detail. Sometimes things triggered him off though.

After Easter Kevin and Kester came into town. Stephen liked seeing his cousins, the extended Bettany/Maynard/Russell clan was spread halfway across the globe so it was good to keep in touch. The twins had just started training to follow in their father's footsteps as doctors. Kevin was leaning towards surgery though and Kester towards paediatrics. As they were on holiday Stephen showed them some of London's sites ending up sitting in a café just off Carnaby Street.
"How are Aunty Madge and Uncle Jem?"
Kevin looked at his hands fixedly leaving it to Kester to answer.
"Well Mum isn't so good actually. She's always been so active but recently she's been getting tired very easily and Dad's worried about her."
"How worried?" Stephen hadn't heard any of this and as he'd had a call from David a few weeks before and so he was slightly surprised.
"Worried enough to tell us when he visited last weekend." Kevin looked at his twin. "worried enough to tell Aunt Joey too."
Stephen drew a deep breath. It must be serious then, he'd never worry mother unnecessarily."
"She's been great." Kester smiled, "She called us at University and told us she and Uncle Jack were there if we wanted to talk and I think she's planning on coming and spending some time with Mum."
Suddenly it was Stephen's turn to stare at his hands. He knew his mother had taken a great interest in her sister's children and now that the twins were training to be doctors it had intensified. He tried desperately to suppress the jealousy rising in his chest. He nearly succeeded but the bitterness in his tone was easy for the twins to hear.
"Mother's always been there for Aunty Madge."
"Yes she's been brilliant like that."
Now the twins felt very awkward, they thanked Stephen for the tour and the coffee and gave their goodbyes leaving Stephen staring into his cup.

thanks for yet more. We can never have too much more! I'm really enjoying another view of the family dynamics. From what my mother told me years ago (she was one of 13, 10 of whom survived to adulthood). the older ones did miss out on attention once they were out of the baby stage and did find it difficult at some stage in life.

(That digression was meant to say that this how it might well have been in the Maynard clan and is one of the reasons I think this is such a good story)

Fireworks eventually I promise but you've got a bit to go before we get there!
(I've just realised I've already past my post total on the old board Shocked

A little bit now and more when I've done some "real"work.

About a week later Stephen was very surprised to answer the phone at work and hear Lucy at the other end. She never called him at work, knowing how busy he was and that it would just annoy him.
"Stephen, I've just had a call from your brothers' school."
His heart sank. It was exam term and if either Felix or Geoff had got themselves into trouble it was going to be bad.
"What's happened."
"I'm sorry darling, there's been an accident. Felix was crossing the road to the playing fields for games and he was hit by a car." Lucy tried to speak as calmly as she could knowing how hard this would be for Stephen.
"He's... is he... is he alive?"
"Yes, he's been rushed to the nearby hospital and is being operated on but they want someone to come and be with him, and with Geoff."
Stephen took a deep breath and tried to focus on the fact that his brother was holding on and that he needed him.
"I'll be home as soon as I can be, I'll ask my Boss for some leave. Can you start to pack for me?"
"Of course, I'll see you soon love."
Lucy hung up and went to try and find a bag for Stephen's things. Chris was playing happily on the floor of the living room as Lucy checked on him she tried to stop the image of Chris lying in a hospital bed from clouding her mind. She needed to be strong for Stephen now. She knew how much he loved his siblings and how responsible he felt for his younger brothers, even Charles who was barely a year younger.

More, please. has anyone else oticed, she asked stupidly, how little Jo actually did for her family. She might have taken the babies for walks in their prams, but she left them to Anna, Rosli, and the triplets for a lot of the time. The older ones did a lot of the work of bringing up the younger ones. It must be easy to have a long family if someone else is doing all the hard work.

#68:  Author: AlexLocation: Home again PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2004 4:16 pm

But she does do all of Jack's mending....why is there no sewing smiley when you need one?

My grandfather was the eldest of 10. By the time he was 5 he was responsible for looking after 3 younger siblings. When he saw the midwife coming down the road he used to lock the door and put a heavy piece of furniture against it as he knew she always "brought a baby". One time she brought a baby on his a birthday. She asked him if he was pleased to have a baby for his brithday (stupid woman) and he said no he wanted a shirt. SO the next day she brought him a shirt, which doesn't seem like a lot but raised his grand total of shirts to 2 which was a pretty big deal and meant he could have one to wear and one in the wash. He's 94 now.

Anyway, great story Sarah, can we have some more? I hope Felix is ok.

I know shedoes all Jack's mending, but for goodness' sake, how much mending does the man create? He's a doctor, not a coal-heaver, he can't do all that much damage to his clothes. Now if he were working in a very physical occupation such as farming, I could understand her moaning, but he isn't.

Solved the problem of the school's name, just didn't mention it Razz

For Stephen the rest of the day passed in something of a blur. Travelling home on the new Victoria line he was on auto-pilot with his brain spinning around plans of how to get to the school and what to do when he got there as well as trying not to imagine the worst. He stopped briefly at the flat to pick up the bag Lucy had packed for him and kiss her and Chris goodbye. He didn't much like leaving her, especially as he had no idea how long they'd need him for, but he had no other choice. The long train ride felt like an eternity to him and by the time he finally reached the hospital he was exhausted and horribly worried.
"How is he? Can I see him now? Where's Geoff?"
The poor nurse who had met Stephen looked slightly taken aback by the sudden rush of questions. Luckily at that moment Felix's headmaster arrived and guided Stephen to a seat.
"He was bleeding badly when he arrived at the hospital, externally and internally, but I've just heard he's out of the operating theatre now. He's stable but very weak and hasn't regained consciousness since the accident. I'll take you to see him in a minute when the doctors say it's alright. Geoff is back at the school being looked after by our Matron for the moment."
Mr Black had a calming and authoritative voice and as he spoke Stephen caught his breath and tried to compose himself.
"Thank you. Before I see him can I ask exactly what happened?"
"From what I have gathered Felix was late getting ready for Games because he had been detained by his Maths teacher. He was therefore crossing the road to our playing fields alone and either didn't look or didn't see the car coming round the corner. Our Game Master, Mr Kirk, didn't see the car hit but heard it's wheels screech as it drove off."
Mr Black looked disgusted for a minute and then continued, "He rushed to see what had happened and found your brother. We got him to the hospital as fast as possible and the Police have been informed but as no one saw the accident it is unlikely they will be able to track to driver."
Stephen tried to take all this in. Not only had some reckless driver hit his little brother on a road that had clear signs warning that children would be crossing, they had driven off and left him lying there. It was almost beyond belief. The doctor arrived at that point to take Mr Black and Stephen in to see Felix. Seeing his brother lying, pale and white, in the hospital bed with drips and wires attached Stephen had to stop himself from crying out. He looked so small and fragile. A kindly nurse who was checking on Felix guided Stephen to a chair and gave him a glass of water.
"Here you go Sir, drink this, it's always a shock to have to see your child like this."
Stephen started, "I'm not his father, just his brother." Suddenly, for the first time since he heard the news, he wondered why he was here and not his parents.

Oh dear! Until your last paragraph, I just assumed Stephen was nearest with Joey and Jack being in Switzerland and that they would get on the next plane - but now I'm wondering .......

Looking forward to all becoming clear and particularly the fireworks, when we get there.

I liked the touch about the hospital assuming Stephen is the parent! Points up the generational complications of a long family.

I'm really enjoying seeing all this from Stephen's point of view. Thinking about it he probably is more of a parent to the younger boys than Jack and Joey. He was at least in the same country aas his younger syblings, which is probably a good start! And I know it was a few posts back but I'm still in shock that Joey completely discounted Stephen's son as her first grandchild! Evil or Very Mad Maybe she wasn't a very good mother to him, but she can't just ignore his existence! Maybe that's why she sent them all off to England so early: she didn't like boys and punished them fot not being girls!

Thank you Sarah, I guess it must have given Stephen a jolt when the nurse described Felix as his child.
Surely the school must have informed Joey & Jack - did they tell the school to get into contact with Stephen?

#76:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2004 10:43 pm

He is not just his brother. Being Felix's brother apparently means more than being Felix's parents. Wonder if the school or Jack/Joey contacted Lucy?

#77:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2004 11:01 pm

I sort of presumed that the school had rung both of them, Jack and Joey as parents and Stephen as he was in the country and could get there quicker.

Sarah, he reminds me of a friend of mine, who pretty much brought up his youngest brother due to an alcoholic mother and a father who wasn't around much. He treats his brother like he's a son, and although its very sweet to see them, its also very sad.
Don't worry about making Stephen even nicer, I think we all could cope with that!

Short bit before I go to bed. Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! Kiss

Stephen turned to Mr Black, “You informed my parents first I assume.”
The Headmaster looked at Stephen slightly oddly.
“Of course, we couldn’t get hold of your father at first as he was with a patient but he knows and said he would contact your mother as soon as he could. I believe she’s on her way to England anyway?”
All of a sudden Stephen remembered Kester saying Mother was coming to see Aunty Madge. He breathed out deeply, at least she would be in the country soon to see Felix. Looking at his brother lying on the bed and thinking of poor Geoff who must be terrified by now Stephen felt out of his depth. For all his maturity and his new status as a parent he was still barely 24 and hardly out of childhood himself.
“Would you like to call your father and tell him Felix is out of surgery yourself?”
Mr Black’s voice cut across Stephen’s thoughts and brought him back to the situation at hand.
“Thank you, that would be good. I’d like to see Geoff as well if that’s possible.”
“I think Matron Baines will have him in bed by now, it’s nearly ten o’clock but you can see him first thing tomorrow morning, he’s been asking for you, that’s why we called.”
Stephen looked down at his watch, he hadn’t realised it was so late. Talking to Geoff would have to wait until tomorrow. Maybe Mother would be here with him by then.
“Is there somewhere I can stay? I don’t want to be far from Felix.” Stephen looked to the kindly Headmaster and Felix’s doctor who was examining the chart on the end of the bed.
“Go and phone your Father” Mr Black suggested, “We’ll sort out somewhere for you to stay whilst you’re doing that.”
“We can set up a bed in here if you like, people don’t like leaving their children mostly.” The Doctor smiled at Stephen who looked exhausted. “We’ll get you something to eat as well and then you should sleep. You won’t be any good to anyone if you’re half dead.”

Thank you Sarah, wondering at the reason for the odd look that Mr Black gave Stephen.

#87:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 3:45 am

I suspect the odd look may have something to do with the fact that Jack may have been the person who gave the school Stephen's phone number. After all, it's rare for schools to have contact details for siblings, isn't it?

I am loving this story! It's very realistic!

#88:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 4:30 am

Or that the fact that it was odd that Stephen even thought to ask the question.

Quote:
Nicci, me too and I wrote him.

When I first read that I thought you meant that you had written him a letter - you know the way girls do to pop stars on whom they have a crush. I was wondering how you addressed the envelope!

In terms of emergency contacts, if the older sib is in the country and the parents aren't, it makes sense to me to involve both, especially if the older-in-charge-of-younger system is part of the family organization. (speaking as oldest of 8 here)

For that matter, with a critical injury of this sort, I would expect the news to fan out quickly from whoever can get first-hand knowledge first, and sibs as well as parents to come running to the extent possible. (Been there, done that.)

Can see that the family dynamics are more complex here, of course.

More story, please?

I would have thought that the school would have Stephen's details as didn't Sarah mention that he visited the boys regulary for sports days and events and stuff?
Was Stephen an old boy of the same school, and was Mr Black his headmaster?

But you're speaking as a late 20th century/early 21st century oldest of 8. Children at that time were children, not half-adults! I can't honestly believe that Stephen would be left as contact - particularly as Jem and Madge would be closer than Jo and Jack, but still not that far!

But Stephen is not a child - he is 24 in this - old enough to be left as next-of-kin if his parents are not in the country. Wonder if Joey will appear - and if so how she will react.

Sarah this is wonderful - more please!

The Independent/Public School tradition is that pupils whose parents are resident overseas must have a guardian in the UK. This is because often the pupils cannot return home for half term, so have to have somewhere to stay. Presumably Stephen fulfilled that position for the younger boys who were still at achool.

BTW: I believe that they were at Rugby.

#98:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 8:12 pm

Rugby would make sense I suppose. I'm assuming Stephen was at a different school to the younger ones, no reason for that except that's what fits best. Hope this next bit makes sense, I can try and edit it if you can't work out who's talking but I think it's alright.

phone phone phone phone phone

Stephen was taken to a small office by the friendly nurse and left to phone his father in peace.

“Hello, Jack Maynard speaking.”
“Dad, it’s me, Stephen, I’m with Felix.”
“I know, Lucy told me when I called your flat earlier. I didn’t know the school, had your number.”
“Oh. I’d assumed you’d given it to them.”
“No, I had no idea you were there till Lucy told me.”
There was an awkward silence for a moment.
“I guess they must have got it from when I came to Felix’s Parents Evening last year when you couldn’t.”
“I suppose so. I wonder why they didn’t call Jem though, he’s the boys’ guardian while they’re in England.”
“Well they said Geoff was asking for me. Anyway I’ve probably been to see Felix and Geoff more than Uncle Jem.”
“I suppose you do. Have you any more news on Felix?”
“He’s out of surgery now and they seem happy with how it went but he’s still not out of the woods.”
“But he’s holding on...”
Stephen was surprised to hear a tremble in Jack’s voice.
“He looks so pale and small though, not like our Felix at all.”
Jack was trying to pull himself together at the end of the phone, to be strong for Stephen, but he was very worried for Felix.
“He’s in good hands, I know some of the doctors there, they’ll do all they can for him.”
“I can’t see Mother letting them do anything else when she gets here.”
Stephen smiled at the thought of Joey descending on the hospital and demanding the best treatment for Felix. The smile faded though as another awkward pause came across the phone line.
“Dad?”
“I’m not sure your mother’s going to be able to get to you very soon.”
“But I thought she was in England anyway, visiting Aunty Madge, it’s not that far for her to come!”
“No, it’s not, but your Aunt is really not very well and I think Joey wants to be with her.”
“No. Felix needs her more. Aunty Madge has Uncle Jem and all her own children!”
“Well you know how close your mother is to her sister, she was pretty much brought up by her.”
Jack’s voice cracked again as he thought of the awful conversation he’d had with Joey in which she’d told him in no uncertain terms that she wasn’t leaving Madge and that Stephen or Charles could go to Felix. It had been a shock to Jack who was desperately worried about his son and would have flown out himself if he could.
“I’m sorry Stephen. She’s not going to come to you until she’s sure Madge is alright and I can’t leave the San. We’ve just had a bout of measles and we’re very short staffed.”
“It’s not your fault Dad, I know your work is important.”
Stephen’s tone was dead and it hurt Jack to hear it.
“Maybe one of your cousins could come and be with you, or Con?”
“It’s alright, I’ll be fine.”
“Maybe. I’ll talk to your Mother again tomorrow when she’s had a night to rest after her journey.”
“Whatever. I’d better go now, they’re making up a bed for me in Felix’s room. I’ll call you if there’s anymore news.”
“Call me tomorrow whatever happens Stephen.”
“Goodnight Dad.”
“Goodnight Stephen.”

As for having crushes on fictional characters, it may be a little unfotunate but I think it's better to have a crush on Stephen Maynard and other nice CS types than Iago from Othello, as one of my friends is insisting on! Last bit for the night, I need to ZZZZ

Stephen returned to Felix’s room to find a camp bed had been set up in the corner and on the small table next to it was a tray with some sandwiches and a large mug of hot milk. The sight of his Dad’s remedy for any stressful situation almost made him smile, although he suspected the hospital hadn’t “made sure” of it’s effect as Dad always did. He hadn’t eaten much all day, a snack at the station but no meal since breakfast, and so he fell on the sandwiches ravenously. As he was eating the nurse came back in to check on Felix.
“He’s stable now. Still very ill but he’s holding.”
She smiled at Stephen who sighed with relief. Felix may still be in danger but if he wasn’t getting worse then that could only be a good sign. He’d grown up too close to Doctors to have any false hope but he also knew not to despair.
“The night staff are about to come on duty, Judy will be looking after Felix, that’s Nurse Morgan officially. I’m Katy by the way, I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”
“Thank you for all this.” Stephen motioned to the bed and the sandwiches.
“Don’t be silly it’s part of my job and I’m glad to see this little one has someone here for him.”
She wrote something on Felix’s chart and left Stephen to his thoughts.

He finished up the food and milk and lay down on the bed staring at the ceiling. Like the rest of his family he’d been brought up as a devout Catholic but it wasn’t something he thought about much. Now though he was offering up the most earnest prayer of his life for God to protect Felix. He remembered the beginning of a prayer his old school had used for their evening service.
Be Present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night.
He prayed with all his heart for his small brother to survive the night, knowing that every hour he held on made his survival more likely. He turned over to face Felix who lay, still and pale, in the large, white hospital bed. His thoughts turned to his Dad miles away who had sounded so scared for Felix and for the first time Stephen thought he understood.
What if it was Chris lying there, he thought, what if Chris was ill and I couldn’t be there. The thought was so terrible to consider. Stephen had always worried about his younger siblings but in the long hours of that night he started to understand how terrible being a parent really could be. There had been many times over the years when Jack had been unable to be with the family. His job was too important, Stephen recognised that his Dad was needed by many people outside of their family and whilst he didn’t like it he understood. He’d never considered how hard it must be for Jack though, how hard it must be to have to concentrate on work one hundred percent when all you wanted to do was go and be with the people you loved. As he thought about his Dad he couldn’t help but consider his Mother too. How could she leave Felix? Perhaps she didn’t realise how serious it was, perhaps she would come tomorrow. She loved Aunty Madge deeply, he knew that. Madge was her sister and going to her was the same as Stephen coming to Felix, perhaps it was even more. As Stephen had grown older and started to actually see the adults in his life he had realised that his Mother turned to her sister as if to her own Mother. He could understand why she wanted to be there but... there was always a but. Aunty Madge had people to be with her and Felix had no one but Stephen right now. However much Stephen reminded himself of how hard his Mother must find it to know Aunty Madge was ill in his heart he could not rid himself of the bitter voice that said she could come if she wanted, Lucy would never have stayed away. Eventually his tiredness became too much and he slipped into sleep.

I think Stephen's maturity is as much down to his upbringing at school as his time at home. Also, with him being the eldest boy Joey will have expected him to look after the rest, so that will have helped.

Ooh, more soon please! I still can't believe Jo isn't coming, although possibly maybe slightly in her defense (and yes, that is as definate as I can bring myself to be) we don't know how ill Madge is. I wish she'd go to Felix though- what if he wakes up and she isn't there? He'd feel neglected and upset, Stephen would be upset on his behalf and know that however much he tried he wasn't his true parent, even if he was probably the best one Felix had, and... and... everyone would be unhappy and it would be nasty! Mad
Please continue soon! Arrow

Fills in membership form of SSOJ. Thinks hard and takes out a double membership, just in case. Packs bag for England, intending to go over and sort Jo out myself. Packs a heavy mallet and a bottle of Baileys. Remembers that this is only a story and feels rather foolish. Shrugs and takes a swig out of the bottle and passes it around to anyone else that wants it.

Settles down to wait for more story ...

Sorry! I wasn't feeling too good yesterday so I spent most of the day in bed and therefore didn't get any writing done. I then spent today trying to catch up with all the work I should have done yesterday so you only get a short bit now Embarassed

Stephen awoke the next morning as a new Nurse opened the curtains in the little room. She turned and smiled at Stephen when she realised she had woken him.
“Sorry to disturb you but the Doctors will be round soon and I thought you’d want to be awake then.”
“Thank you Nurse...Morgan?” Stephen vaguely remembered Katy telling him that last night.
“That’s alright, there’s a bathroom with a shower down the hall on the right if you want it.”
Stephen felt a little more human after his shower and a little more prepared to deal with whatever the day would through at him. He returned to the small room to find Felix surrounded by a group of doctors led by the same one he’d talked to on arriving the day before.
“Mr Maynard. I don’t believe I ever introduced myself last night. I’m Dr Care.”
The doctor shook Stephen’s hand and gave him a reassuring smile.
“He’s still clinging on, there’s been no real change in the night which is a positive sign.”
Stephen looked uncertain.
“Shouldn’t he be improving by now?”
“It’s early days yet, Felix was badly injured and for now we’re glad that he is holding his own and not deteriorating. I believe your Father is a doctor so you must have seen how slow progress can sometimes be.
Stephen nodded at the truth of this and tried to look on the news as positively as he could. When he told his Dad on the phone Jack took the same line as Dr Care which calmed Stephen down. He trusted his Dad’s opinion. Jack told him that he had been on duty at the San most of the previous night and that now he was going, with Len, down to the school to let Felicity, Cecil and Phil now what had happened. It had never been part of their upbringing to hide painful events from them. Stephen was glad Len would be there if Joey couldn’t be.
“What if Fliss wants to come to see Felix?”
“Well we’ll deal with that when it happens. If the girls want to come out of school and stay with Len then Hil... Miss Annersley says that will be alright but I think whilst the news is so uncertain I’d prefer them to be around their friends. There is very little they can do at home.”
“Yes but Fliss and Felix are so close, even with him in England and her in Switzerland.”
“I know Steve, I am a twin myself. I’ll talk to her and Len will talk to her. You don’t need to worry about the girls. I wish you didn’t need to worry about any of this.”
Jack sounded regretful at the thought of his son dealing with Felix, and Geoff, on his own.
“I’m going to go and see Geoff soon, his headmaster said I could this morning. I’m not sure what I’m going to say though.”
“You’ll know when he’s there. He’ll mainly want to see a friendly face.”
Stephen briefly thought about asking if there was anymore news from his Mother but he couldn’t quite bring himself to.
“I’ll call you later to tell you how Geoff is and hear about the girls.”
“That sounds good, and if anything changes you’ll call me too. I’m going to call your Mother now and see how Madge is so I should be able to give you some more news about that too.”
Stephen notice that his Dad didn’t say that Joey might be on her way, just that there might be news.
“Pass my best wishes on to Aunty Madge, I hope there’s nothing to serious wrong with her.”
“I will. Speak to you later son.”
“Bye Dad.”

Where the Hell is Joey? There is no excuse for not being there for your child. Come to that Jack should let the rest of his staff cope at the San - what are they stupid? If so then he's to blame as he hired them!

As far as this drabble is concerned neither Jack nor Joey are acting as true parents - they should be supporting Stephen and being there for Felix. What will happen if Felix dies??

Maybe Jack feels that he can't leave the rest of the girls, maybe half his staff are sick, maybe he doesn't care as much as he thinks he does. I feel that Joey is more to blame that Jack, but then she is the way sje because jack lets her get away with it. Don't know, just want to see everything OK again for all of them. Except Joey maybe.

Jack does have some excuse. But I contrast him with my mum who came home from a conference once because I had the stomach flu and was home alone with our nanny (dad was out of town - somewhere). I was about 3. In my mind she came home from the other side of the world - but it could have been the next town over, I don't know. Anyhow, I still remember how good it felt and this was over 20 years ago!

Didn't Jack say earlier that the San wasshort staffed at the moment? That could be some excuse, although he's had time to try to get someone in temporarily by now surely?
In a way, I'm glad that he's there to talk to the other girls instead of leaving it to Len, but I think he ought to try to get to Felix after that - he could still die, for goodness sake.

#173:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Mon Jan 26, 2004 12:56 am

Sorry you've been poorly, Sarah. I hope you are better now.

The only excuse I can think of for Joey is if Madge is dying and has asked for her and she's said yes and so feels she has to go there first and will then turn up at the hospital as soon as possible. But if that is the case, then she should have sent loving messages saying she will be there as soon as possible - not a word from her seems really uncaring.

Jennie, it may have been 24 hours since that post but it hasn't actually even been 24 hours since the accident yet! Not that I think you should stop though Twisted Evil
I don't think this is going to make you like her anymore either Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Stephen hung up the phone and went to find a taxi to take him to the boys’ school. Arriving at the gates he was met by the Head’s secretary, Miss Fishwick, who took him in to Mr Black’s office. The Headmaster was obviously still worried about Felix and was glad to hear he’d survived the night.
“We let Geoff sleep in this morning as he was tired out. Miss Fishwick has just gone to get him.”
Stephen looked around the small office. He, Charles and Mike had been to a different school to the younger ones but it still felt odd to be sitting in the Headmaster’s office, almost like he was in trouble. He wondered when that feeling would rub off. Just as he was considering the matter the door opened and in waled the secretary with Geoff trailing slightly behind her. On seeing his brother it looked as if Geoff might fling himself at Stephen but as he saw his Headmaster standing in the background he quickly checked himself.
“I’ll leave you two alone for a bit, no one will disturb you in here.”
As the Head shut the door behind him Geoff forget his eleven year old dignity and hugged Stephen tightly.
“You came, I was all alone and they said Felix was hit by a car and Tom said that cars killed people and then Alex said that some people survived but I wasn’t sure and you weren’t here and Mama wasn’t here and Dad wasn’t here and I didn’t know what to do...”
Stephen clasped his little brother to him letting him choke out all the worries that had been building up since the accident the day before. When Geoff final ran out of breath, and finished in an enormous sob, Stephen set about telling Geoff exactly how Felix was. He knew his parents had never hidden the truth from their children and so now he didn’t spare Geoff or try to tell him that everything would be alright. He was honest and told him how serious the situation was, but he also said that there was still hope. Geoff listened, wide eyed, to everything his brother said and then asked the one question Stephen had hoped wouldn’t come up.
“And when are Mama and Papa coming?”
“I don’t know Geoff.”
Stephen looked into the wide eyes of his youngest brother and struggled with his own feelings about his mother’s absence. He couldn’t say all the angry things in his head to Geoff, he couldn’t pour out his own troubles to an eleven year old child.
“Dad’s very busy at the moment you know. They had an outbreak of measles up at the San and the people there need him. Fliss and the girls need him too. You wouldn’t want the to be alone would you.”
Geoff shook his head, he knew how important his Dad’s work was too.
“But Mama, she’s coming soon?”
“Mama might not be able to come very soon, she’s gone to be with Aunty Madge right now because she’s ill and needs Mama’s help. I expect she’ll come when she knows Madge will be alright. After all Felix has got you and me.”
Geoff looked at his brother with tears brimming in his eyes.
“But she’ll come? She has to come. I know she’s got lots of people to look after but when something’s wrong she always comes, like when Cecil bumped her head at Christmas and Mama went to the hospital with her.”
Out of the mouths of babes, Stephen sighed.
“She’ll come as soon as she can Geoff and until then we’ll just have to be especially strong and remember Aunty Madge in our prayers as well as Felix.”
“I suppose so.”
Stephen found a clean Handkerchief in his pocket and wiped Geoff’s nose as if he were a kid of six again and not a grown up eleven year old.
“Can I come and see Felix now?”
“Well I’m not sure Geoff, he’s very sick right now and the doctors need to be able to look after him.”
Inwardly Stephen quaked at the idea of letting Geoff see Felix as he now was, small and pale and looking so... so broken. He remembered seeing Phil when she had been ill and how upset he’d been.
“But I want to see him.”
Geoff looked teary again.
“I tell you what Geoff, today’s Friday. How about you go back to your lessons and try to work as hard as you can today and then I’ll ask Mr Black if you can come and see Felix on Saturday. We don’t want you to fall behind in your lessons.”
Geoff looked very doubtful at this idea.
“You could go and see your friends as well and if anything happens I’ll call the school and let you know.
“The very instant it happens?”
“The very instant.”
“And if Mama comes? You’ll call me then too?”
“Of course I will. What do you say.”
“Alright.”
When Mr Black re-entered the room he found Geoff describing his last Chemistry lesson in great detail with lots of arm waving to an amused Stephen. The way Geoff clung to his brother as he said goodbye showed him that the child was still upset but also showed his strength and resilience. Stephen explained the arrangement to the Head teacher who immediately agreed. When Stephen had left however he sat and wondered to himself why on earth Felix’s mother wasn’t there, or at least on her way. The father he knew to be a doctor in a large Sanatorium in Switzerland but he couldn’t understand why any woman would chose to go to their sister’s side over their son’s.

#191:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:27 pm

I really don't think that there is any excuse for Jo's absence, even if Madge is seriously ill. A mother's place is with her sick child, full stop.

#192:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:33 pm

No excuse, none, for allowing a little boy to be without parental support. Jack may, just, have some good reason for not being there, but even if Madge is dying Joey's priority should be her child.

Looking forward to her excuses when/if she ever does turn up - and if any of her sons, or her husband, will accept them.

That tissue box might not be a bad idea, it's going to get worse before it gets better I'm afraid.

When Stephen arrived back at the hospital he was greeted by two phone messages, one from Lucy checking to see what was going on and one from Con who had just heard the news from her mother. Stephen rang his wife first. He felt guilty at leaving her alone with a small child but she reassured him that she was fine and that her younger sister was going to comeand stay until Stephen returned. It was good talking to Lucy, she had a soothing voice and remained calm and reasonable in the face of Stephen’s overemotional state. When he hung up he felt much stronger and more ready to deal with whatever happened to Felix. The conversation with Con was harder. She had been called by Joey a few hours earlier, obviously after Joey had talked to Jack. Apparently Madge really was very ill. She had been tiring easily and looking paler and more grey by the day. They had hoped that it might simply be anaemia but it was looking more and more likely that the problem was with her heart. Con described how worried their mother had sounded about her sister. Stephen however, running low on patience, had suggested that Madge had quite enough support with Jem there and David and his family nearby and perhaps their mother should be where she was REALLY needed, with her son who might die. Con had been surprised to hear the venom in her brother’s voice. Unlike Len she had never really paid much attention to their mother’s focus on her girls, or the increasing disillusionment of Stephen, Charles and Mike. Con had been told by their mother to come and help Stephen, but by this point all the calming effect of Lucy had worn off, and he snapped back at her that he was quite alright and perhaps she should go and check on her precious sisters. Con realised that there was something seriously wrong but as she had no idea what she just tried to react calmly. She took Stephen at his word and told him that she would go to the Platz. After all it was unreasonable to assume that Len could do much with a new baby and Reg out of town on a conference. Stephen realised that his father really must be short staffed at the San, by the sounds of it the measles outbreak had been quite serious and some of the staff had either been infected or had worked themselves to exhaustion point. With Reg not around either it might actually be best for Con to go and check on her sisters. He suggested she should try and contact Margot’s convent as well to at least let her know what was happening and ask for the Nun’s prayers. As soon as he hung up the phone he wished he hadn’t snapped. Having Con there with him would have been wonderful but it was too late for worries now. He just hoped that their mother would realise where her place was before Geoff too started to be hurt by her absence. As soon as he had thought it though he felt bad. Aunty Madge was ill, she too could be dying for all he knew. Stephen went in to Felix’s room and fell on his knees beside the bed and prayed a wordless prayer for help to his heavenly Father.

This is terrific, Sarah, so I'm hoping for lots more.

KB, when Jo arrives at the hospital, I'm going to ask you to step aside from your position as Headmistress and let me take Jo into the study. I can assure you that she won't enjoy it, even if I do.

This is great Sarah. If Madge is that ill then Joey must feel torn, and whilst I can't see that anything should keep her from the boys, we don't know what she is feeling/thinking.

Thanks for all the support guys Smile Here's some more for you Arrow

Stephen had never really been in a situation before where he was actually helpless to change the situation. Sitting beside Felix’s bed on that long Friday he had to admit that he could do nothing but watch his brother’s struggles for life. At lunchtime one of the nurses convinced him to go and eat in the hospital canteen to get out of the room. Katy, the nurse he had met on arriving the day before tried several times to suggest that he should go and walk around the grounds but Stephen wanted to stay just in case something happened. Eventually he realised that he couldn’t just sit and do nothing and he found the work papers that had been in his bag when he had rushed home barely twenty four hours previously. He sat in the corner of the small room and tried to focus on his work, looking up every time he heard the slightest noise. He talked to his Dad again that evening, there was little news to pass on except that Felix was still holding on. The Dr Care kept repeating to Stephen that it would take time for Felix’s body to recvoer from injuries this serious and that his condition was still stable and that this was all they were hoping for at the moment. Stephen wished there was more news to pass on to his Dad though. From the Platz however there was news. Felicity reacted to Felix’s accident very badly. She had been crying all afternoon until the school had put her to bed with a glass of hot milk. Con had arrived in the early evening, obviously having left almost as soon as she had talked to Stephen, and was now trying to calm the distraught girl but it wasn’t working.
“She is convinced he’s going to die and she won’t be there. I’m so glad you told Con to come here Steve, I can’t be with her whilst we’re so short staffed and I don’t want to worry Len.”
“How did Cecil and Phil take the news?”
“Badly at first of course but they both seem to be holding up much better than Fliss is. They’re still at school with their friends.”
“What are you going to do with Fliss?”
Stephen feared that Fliss might be right. That she would never see her twin again and he knew that for all her maturity she would feel the loss of her beloved twin very badly.
“Con’s offered to travel with her to you and Felix, but I don’t really want to let her go. I’ll see how she is tomorrow morning. I’d rather not have her so far away as well.”
Just before he said goodnight to his Dad Stephen finally asked the question Jack had been waiting for.
“And Mother... is she...?”
“Well Madge is in a private ward now and being watched by the best doctors Jem can find. I think Jem has suggested that Madge will be alright without your Mother but she’s unwilling to leave until one of your cousins arrives to stay with their mother. Ailie should be arriving tomorrow sometime.”
“Is Aunty Madge in real danger then?”
Jack paused, not sure what to say to his son who sounded more alienated every time he mentioned his Mother.
“She would have been if they hadn’t caught the symptoms this soon, she was headed for a likely heart attack, they should be able to help her now though.”

After they finished their conversation Jack looked at the staff roster in front of him. There was no way he was going to be able to leave the San until Reg returned or a locum was found and that looked unlikely for another three or four days. Although he didn’t want to send Fliss so far away it would be good to know that Stephen had Con with him to share the responsibility if Joey didn’t come soon. Thinking of his wife Jack’s heart sank. He had always known that a lot of the children’s upbringing had been left to Anna and a series of others but he had never really stopped to notice just how much Joey focussed on her girls above the boys. Stephen was obviously badly hurt by his Mother’s behaviour and Jack now found himself wondering which of the others felt this way too. Charles and Mike seemed likely but he hoped that Felix and Geoff hadn’t picked up on it yet. When he saw Joey next he was going to have a few choice words for her. Jem had already expressed his opinion of Joey’s treatment of her sons to Jack over the phone and Jack was tempted to let his brother-in-law tell Joey to her face but this was his job. He wondered exactly what Madge would say when she was told, Jem had decreed that she should be spared any news that might be stressful for her. Jack sighed deeply and put away the rosters. Just time to check in on Fliss before he was back on duty.

Back at the hospital Stephen was settling himself for another long night. He had talked to Lucy again and he’d also had calls from both Charles and Mike. Charles was all for speeding straight to Felix’s side when he realised that Stephen was there on his own but allowed himself to be convinced by Stephen’s arguments that there was nothing Charles could do if he was at the hospital. All the same Charles said that the minute Stephen asked he would be on a train. Mike of course could not have come however much he wished it. He asked Stephen to call if anything changed and he sounded so upset that he wasn’t there. Mike had never really been homesick since entering the navy but now he sounded miserable. Stephen used the same tactics to try and calm him as he had on Charles. They didn’t seem to do much though and eventually Stephen suggested Mike ring their father, there were some things that Stephen couldn’t deal with alone. As he lay down on the makeshift bed for the second time Stephen thought how thankful he was that Mike hadn’t thought to ask where their Mother was. He didn’t trust himself to have that conversation with the only other member of his family who felt exactly the same way. In his first years away from home Mike had sent Stephen several letters that showed just how much he felt betrayed by his parents and Joey in particular. Charles never seemed to fell it so much, he got a look in his eyes sometimes that told Stephen he too saw the imbalance of affection but in his beloved books and scrolls he seemed to have found consolation.

Ok Madge is quite ill, but she isn't in any imminent danger by the look of it, so what the hell is Joey doing refusing to leave her?
I think Jem should tell Joey exactly what he thinks of her and send her to Felix straight away.

I'm sorry everyone but I really need to do some work tonight and so you're only getting a very small update. I promise to give you more tomorrow when I've finished my essay, my seminar reading, caught up on the emails I owe people and started on the next essay Sad

The night passed slowly as Stephen scanned Felix for signs of change. The doctors still seemed happy with his condition but Stephen was growing more and more unnerved by the stillness of his brother. Sure Felix had never been as active as Mike or Geoff or even Fliss but seeing him lying there unmoving was so unnatural he found it harder and harder to imagine his brother awake again. The rest of the weekend passed in the same way.

On Saturday morning Geoff came to see Felix and stared at the unfamiliar sight on the bed. His eyes were wide and his face almost as pale as Felix’s. Stephen clasped Geoff’s shoulder and explained what all the pieces of equipment in the room did, having asked the nurse to explain them to him earlier. He then took Geoff for a drink and cake in the canteen and tried to remove the terrified look from his face. Jack rang whilst Geoff was still at the hospital so was able to talk to his youngest son and comfort him in a way that Stephen couldn’t. He may have spent a lot of time looking after his brother’s but he was still their brother and not their father and he lacked the authority in his voice to calm a trembling eleven year old. Geoff returned to school, preferring not to have to see Felix in that state again, and Stephen was left alone again.

Come on Jo! Get your priorities right! Get to the hospital! Please may we see why she's not there? Soon? I know she's with Madge, but I want to know from Jo's prespective what her reasons are!

#234:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:28 am

If Jo is staying with Madge until Ailie or one of Madge's other daughters arrives, to do things for her that only another woman can do, why does Jem not hire a trained nurse? And please don't tell me that he can't afford it. Madge was quite happy to have a nurse look after her in 'Rescue' when Jo was away on holiday. Also, I don't think that Jo will help Madge get better, more likely to fret her to death.

#235:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:40 am

Joey could easily be there now. If Madge is worse, Jack would have said so in order to give her an excuse. She's not even phoned!

*makes wax doll of Joey and sticks pins in*

#236:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 11:41 am

Here you go, Joey finally makes an apearence. Sort of.

There were more phone calls from members of the family. Rix called, as did Bride and Jackie, there was a telegram from Margot and another from Robert Mackenzie who was out in India. David called too, letting Stephen have the latest news of his Aunt and trying hard not to mention Joey’s continued place at Madge’s side. There were also several calls from Jack. Stephen hated that his Dad was still making excuses for his Mother, she would come when Sybil arrived, she would come when the tests were back, she would come when... On Sunday evening Joey herself called to find out how Felix was doing but she only talked to the doctor and then said she had to return to her sister’s side. When Stephen passed this fact on to his Dad just before bed on Sunday Jack finally cracked.
“I’m sorry you have to go through all this alone Steve, you shouldn’t’ have to, your Mother should be there but I’ll come as soon as I can.”
Stephen was surprised to hear his Dad admit this but he downplayed it and asked instead how Felicity was doing.
“She’s not really improving. Much as I hate to let her go I think I’m going to have to let Con take her to you in England.”
“I’ll look after them Dad, don’t worry. There’s a little hotel near here where I can get them a room.”
“I just wish I knew how she’ll react to seeing him so ill.”
“There are plenty of doctors here to care for her as well as me and Con. She’ll be alright and it might shock her out of making herself sick.”
“I suppose so. If I can get them tickets then they should be with you by Tuesday morning.”
Stephen was glad to know that his sisters were coming. He wished he could spare them the sight of Felix as ill as he was but it would be good to have someone there with him. Maybe there would be better news by the time they arrived.

Having booked tickets for Con and Felicity, and arranged a place for them to stay in Calais on Monday night before their ferry on Tuesday, Jack called Joey again. This time he put his foot down. He told her that the girls would be arriving on Tuesday and that she was going to be there to meet them. She was angry with him for forcing her but she agreed to come and meet her daughters and go to Stephen and Felix. Jack hated having to make Joey do anything against her will but Stephen had been alone for long enough, her sons needed her, and there was nothing she could do for Madge how ever worried she was.

When Joey came out of the office after talking to Jack she found her brother-in-law waiting outside of Madge’s room. She had worked herself up into a state about Jack taking her away from her beloved sister and started in on a long complaint but Jem was having none of it. He calmly informed Joey that she only had herself to blame and that if she didn’t trust him to look after his wife then she was batty. He also forbade her from mentioning anything to Madge for fear of putting any unnecessary strain on her heart. Cut off from any support Joey scowled angrily.
“It isn’t as if Felix is alone, he has Stephen with him and I trust my son. Do you think I don’t care for him at all? I know he’s been injured but Madge does need me. I couldn’t leave her, I know you’ll look after her but she never left me any of the time I was ill when I was growing up and I can hardly desert her now. I don’t know why you and Jack are so keen to get me out of here, Stephen can cope, he’s not a child anymore and I would have gone as soon as Madge was out of danger.”
Jem hadn’t finished however.
“You know Joey if I was Jack I would have had much less sympathy for you. Your place is with your son not your sister. If Madge was in the same place what do you think she would have done? Can you imagine her leaving Kevin or Kester to David’s care when the were seriously ill? As for Madge being out of danger she is as safe now as we can make her. Her heart is weak, that’s always going to be true now but we’re watching her so carefully. Your behaviour this weekend has shocked and surprised me. I thought you had grown into a strong woman and a wonderful mother but I find I was wrong.”
With that Jem turned and went into his wife’s room leaving Joey in the corridor, seething because of the injustice she felt in his last words but paralysed by the steel in his eyes.

I can understand why Jo wants to be with her sister, since MAdge was there for her when she was young. BUT, Jo only had Madge available then, and Madge has Jem and her family. Jo seems to have blinded herself to exactly how bad Felix is. I think she's going to have a shock when she does see him!

Yes, good for Jack and Jem, but she should not have needed to be told. Just think how ALL the boys must feel, knowing that one of their brothers is hovering between life and death, and their 'loving' mother puts her sister first.

Robert Mackenzie is Mollie's oldest son. I found the family tree on the site and thought that possibly they Maynards should be in touch with their Mackenzie cousins. If you notice one of Meg's Godmothers is called Dorothy Mackenzie, one of the Mackenzie twins. Another shortish bit here I'm afraid.

On Monday morning Stephen finally talked to his mother. She called and told him that she would be picking the girls up from the station on Tuesday morning and bringing them to the hospital. He told her that he’d found a hotel nearby for the girls and she thanked him. She asked how Felix was but Stephen was still only able to say that he was “stable”, he was starting to really dislike that word. Joey seemed content with this though and after double checking which ward Felix was on she hung up. There had been something strange in his mother’s tone which had unnerved Stephen. She hadn’t sounded quite her normal, jolly, oblivious self. For a moment Stephen wondered if something had happened to Aunty Madge but he realised that his mother was hardly likely to leave if that was true. He wasn’t sure how he was going to react to seeing her. He was still worried about Felix and he felt like he had been wound up tightly and just wanted to explode. Having another adult there would be good, and yet. And yet what? Somehow Stephen couldn’t look forward to her arrival. He knew Geoff needed his mother and he hated the idea that Felix might wake up without her there but Stephen himself was more relieved by Con and Felicity coming than Joey. He found he was now worrying what his mother might do when she arrived. Would she be rude to the Doctors? Would she be able to explain her absence to Geoff? Instead of making him feel better his mother’s approach made him feel worse because, deep down, underneath it all, Stephen didn’t know how HE was going to react when he saw her.

Trying to hustle myself onto a train actually PatMac! I was planning on coming back to Uni last night and posting more but I got stuck in St Albans as they cancelled all northbound trains because the high winds were causing problems. Sorry to make you wait so long but here's a longish bit to make up for it.

At lunchtime Stephen went back to the school to see Geoff. They ate together in a small room so they could be alone. He didn’t ask much about Felix, Stephen had told him on arriving that not much had changed. Seeing Felix lying there had been very disturbing for Geoff and he didn’t quite know how to deal with it. He was much quieter than normal, even his excitement over his mother’s arrival the next day seemed somehow muted. Stephen found this behaviour almost as scary as Felix’s eerie stillness and was determined to break it before he returned to the hospital. He spent a long time discussing plans for the summer holidays and memories of Easter and tried to involve Geoff in wondering who would win the upcoming game the school Rugby team was playing. It was this that finally made Geoff talk. He expressed his opinion that they would struggle without Felix there and all in a muddle he asked the question he had been worrying over.
“Will Felix ever get better? I mean he was so ill and even if he gets better will her really be alright or will he be stuck in bed? What happens if he never wakes up? Dad said he would but how can he when he was hit by a car.”
“Geoff, has Dad ever lied to us? If he says Felix can get better than Felix can get better. I know how bad it looks, I get scared too, but we have to be strong for Felix. You know when Phil was ill when you were both little she looked just as bad and look at her now.”
“I don’t remember that.”
“I know, but I do. You have to believe that Felix will get better Geoff. Everyone is working just as hard as they can for him.”
“But what if he doesn’t?”
“We’ll cope with that IF it happens Geoff but you remember what Mother told us.”
“Dying is just going to sleep here and waking up with God, I remember. I just don’t want Felix to go to sleep here.”
Stephen looked at his brother who had a defiant expression on his face though his eyes sparkled with tears.
“None of us want Felix to die Geoff and we’re going to fight for him as hard as we can. Don’t despair just yet. The doctors say he’s doing fine. There is NO reason to think he’s not going to make it.”
Geoff had brightened slightly at that but he was definitely not his usual self when Stephen left, he was too quiet and thoughtful. Stephen wished he could have done more but he also wondered if it was a sign that his littlest brother was growing up.

Monday night almost felt like the longest so far. He’d had another chat with Geoff at lunch and it was obvious that he was still terrified Felix wouldn’t survive. Stephen found himself trying to convince Geoff without really being sure himself. The best line he’d found was that Dad said Felix could recover. Just before leaving Geoff had asked what would happen if Felix did die. What answer could Stephen give? He had fallen back on their Mother’s old explanation of death being like falling asleep to wake up with God. This seemed to satisfy Geoff at least for the moment and Stephen wished he could go back to trusting in his Mother’s simple words. Perhaps because he knew she was coming the next morning to see her son, Stephen was even more aware of Felix’s unnatural stillness. He slept fitfully as he had the other nights, waking every time a nurse entered to check on Felix. Just before dawn Stephen finally gave up on sleep and sat holding his brother’s hand. The doctors had told him that Felix might be able to hear him so he had been telling him stories about Chris and about his own school days. This time he was just sitting and watching. Felix’s eyelashes were dark shadows against his white cheeks and Stephen observed that his skin was barely deeper in colour than the bandage over his left temple.
“Please wake up Felix, you’ve slept long enough and it’s morning now. Mother’s coming to see you today and she’s bringing Fliss. Just think what Fliss will say to see you still in bed. She’ll be ever so annoyed if she’s travelled this far and you aren’t even awake to greet her. And Con’s coming too. You haven’t seen her in a while so I know you’d hate to miss her. They can tell you how Meg is growing up too. Please, you have to wake up, you have to.”
Stephen shut his eyes and let out a ragged breath. Still no change, always no change.
“Felix, baba, you have to open your eyes for me.”
Nothing.

When the nurse arrived in the morning to open the curtains she found Stephen, asleep, with his head on Felix’s lap and his hand still holding tightly onto his brother’s. The poor lad was exhausted and she was very glad that his Mother was finally coming to take some of the strain on herself. As she checked the Felix’s pulse and breathing as quietly as she could she noticed that there seemed to be a slight colour on his cheeks. She double checked his pulse. No doubt about it, it was getting stronger. Having grown attached to the little boy and his brother she couldn’t stop herself letting out a little squeak of pleasure which woke Stephen. He panicked at first, thinking the end had come, but then when he looked at Katy’s face he saw her smiling and the joy in her eyes.
“What... is he...?”
He turned to look at Felix and he too saw the slight flush of pink on his cheeks.
“Don’t get your hopes up too high, he’s not awake yet, but it’s a good sign. His pulse seems a little stronger too.”
“He’s turned the corner?”
“I’ll go and get Dr Care to answer that for you.”
Her face told him though that she was more hopeful than before and his face broke into a grin.

It's such a shame that he is having to father Felix and Geoff though. I understand Jack, but Joey needs...well, we've already said all that. I can see her breezing in now and thinking there has been a load of fuss about nothing. Then there will be fireworks.

Hurrah, felix is getting better. It's just a shame Jo didn't see him at his worst so that she realised what a dreadful mother she had been.

Oh, Sarah, poor you! We seemed to miss the winds here! You're a star to post after a rotten journey. I hope you are rested now.

I'm pleased that Felix is a little better. Just hope Joey realises how touch and go it has been! Please don't have her sing the Red Sarafan and take the credit for him waking up! I'm sure you won't. Waiting with bated breath for the doctor to confirm the improvement.

Also waiting for the fireworks! Wink

It's all very well for Stephen to repeat what Jo said about dying, but what will all her children think of her as a mother if she couldn't be bothered to go to see her own son when he was lying in a coma?

But I do agree, Anna ad Rosli have made a good job of Stephen.

#300:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Mon Feb 02, 2004 11:40 pm

Embarassed Sorry! The RL monster ( snake ) is doing it's best to tear me away but I'll do my best to post at least once each day. Tonights isn't too long I'm afraid but tomorrows should be longer (look for it late afternoon rather than morning).

When Dr Care arrived, Stephen found himself banished so a proper examination could take place. He went to the Entrance Hall of the hospital and looked out of a large window into the countryside that surrounded the building. It was a clear, sunny day, early summer, and everything looked cheerful and bright. Stephen felt very cut off from it though, he was so focussed on Felix that he barely saw anything outside the window. He started pacing up and down trying to get rid of some of the energy that had been slowing building up inside him since he had seen the colour in Felix’s cheeks. He knew he shouldn’t expect too much but he couldn’t help it, he prayed so hard that this might be the start of a full recovery for his baby brother. Eventually one of the orderlies had to come and tell him to sit down as he was disturbing the other patients and visitors. He went back to his seat by the window and stared out, unseeing, as ambulances arrived and departed.
“Stephen Maynard I thought you had stopped biting your nails!”
Startled out of his reverie he turned to find his Mother looking at him in an amused manner. Behind her was Con, looking tired and drawn with Felicity clinging to her hand.
“Now what are you doing out here, you can’t have been expecting us so early. Con managed to catch an earlier ferry than was planned. Now where is Felix.”
Joey’s breezy manner threw Stephen completely he found himself staring at her wordlessly, unable to form even the most simple sentence. She expected an answer though so he took a deep breath and tried to pull himself together.
“Hello Mother, girls. The doctors are with Felix right now.”
Felicity looked up at this. There were hundreds of questions behind her eyes and Stephen thought she looked much older than she had last time he’d seen her.
“He’s still unconscious but this morning the nurse and I thought we saw some new colour in his cheeks so the doctors are checking to see if this is real improvement.”
Stephen smile at the frightened girl.
“It’s the best news since the accident Fliss.”
She swallowed hard and turned her face into her sister’s side. Joey put her arm around Felicity’s other side and smiled at Con. From what Joey had seen Con was really being wonderful with Felicity, she was going to make a great mother some day.
“Perhaps we could find somewhere for Con and Felicity to sit down and have a drink whilst we’re waiting. They’ve travelled a long way.”
“Of course, sorry, I should have thought of that first.” Stephen stammered in embarrassment, “There’s a café along this corridor. I’ll get us all some coffee and breakfast and you can wash your faces in the bathroom just on the right here if you want.”
Stephen indicated to a door just in front of them and Con, Felicity and Joey went in as Stephen went to find breakfast for them all, his thoughts whirling.

What a stupid, self-cenred person Jo is. How can she behave in this way? One son in a coma, Stephen's anxieties brushed aside, and Felicity's feeelings for her twin totally ignored.

A horrendous, protracted, painful death is too good for Jo.

Obviously taking a break was the right thing to do as you've now got a long section to make up for the gap, hope it's alright!

By the time Joey and her daughters had reappeared Stephen had found a table for them. In front of him was a large tray full of rolls, butter, jam and large cups of coffee which Joey distributed to the four of them. Stephen had calmed down slightly, knowing that he couldn’t make a scene in front of Con and Fliss. He tried to fill them all in on Felix’s condition. He wanted to make sure they understood just how much danger Felix had been in but he didn’t want to scare Felicity anymore than was absolutely necessary. They listened to all he had to say intently and then Con asked if Felix could hear people talking to him to which Stephen had to reply that he wasn’t sure but that he had been talking to him anyway.
“He’s not really reacting to anything. Until today there had been no change at all from how he looked when I arrived.”
“No change at all?”
Stephen looked at his mother, she seemed a little confused by his words.
“No, he’s been stable but not improving.”
“If he’s not getting better d...d...does that mean he won’t wake up?”
Stephen turned to look at Felicity, she looked terrified at the thought. Joey had her arm around her daughter, holding her close, and Con was watching her with sympathetic eyes.
“No Fliss, he should still wake up. Sometimes the body just needs time to repair itself.”
Stephen gulped down his scalding hot coffee. Con and Fliss seemed to realise how much danger Felix had been in but he really wasn’t sure his Mother did. As he watched her out of the corner of his eye she looked like she was trying to work something out. She must have been told he thought, she can’t not know. He was run over she must know that’s serious.
“How was Aunty Madge when you left her?”
“She’s still very ill. Jem thought there was nothing I could do for her though.”
Stephen caught an edge of resentfulness in his Mother’s voice and added it to the confusion of thoughts and observations he was trying to make sense of. Con seemed to notice it as well and she turned to look at her Mother curiously. Thankfully Felicity was oblivious to any change in tone and was instead staring into her cup of milky coffee.

When they had finished their breakfast Stephen took them along to Felix’s room to see if the doctors had finished. They were just leaving the room as the small group walked approached.
“Dr Care, what’s the verdict then, is he really improving?”
“It looks like it,”The Doctor smiled, “Come to my office and I’ll tell you more.”
Dr Care indicated the way to his office at one end of the corridor next to one of the larger children’s wards.
“And who are these charming ladies?”
“Sorry. This is my Mother, Mrs Maynard and two of my sisters, Con and Felicity.”
“Mrs Maynard, I’m glad to meet you and your daughters.” He shook Joey’s hand warmly and then turned to the frightened Felicity. “You must be the twin of our patient, you look very much like him.”
Felicity smiled shyly at the doctor. Working on a paediatric ward he was very good at dealing with frightened siblings as well dealing with worried parents, not that Mrs Maynard seemed worried exactly. She seemed slightly confused and he wasn’t quite sure what to make of her. She had her arm tightly round the younger girl in a very protective way and yet she had left her son alone in a strange hospital to cope with the stress of Felix’s injuries. Giving up on the puzzle for the moment he guided the whole group to his office, guessing correctly that they were all desperate to hear the latest report.

The report Dr Care gave was still very tentative to Stephen’s ears. Felix did seem to have made a step in the right direction. He had reacted to some of the physical stimuli the doctors had used, for example, but he wasn’t awake yet and until then no one would know the full extent of the injuries. Stephen realised that he had never actually considered the fact that Felix’s brain might have been damaged and he could see that his sister’s hadn’t either. His Mother was completely still and very pale, he couldn’t read her face at all and it worried him. There weren’t many questions to ask, Felix was still ill and all they could do was wait. At least the news was more positive than it had been the day before Stephen thought, something good to tell Dad when he rang later.
“Well that’s all the news I have for you now, I’m sure Mrs Maynard wants to see her son, why don’t you take her to see him Stephen and I’ll answer any questions your sisters might have and tell them what to expect when they see him.”
Stephen nodded at the suggestion. Fliss had seen people in hospital before, not least their little sister Phil, but it would be a shock and Dr Care was the best one to prepare her. Joey seemed a little reluctant to leave her daughters but she obviously wanted to see Felix too so it took only a little persuading to see that Dr Care would look after them well.

Pausing with his hand on the door of Felix’s room Stephen turned to look at his Mother.
“You know he’s going to look bad don’t you?”
He was hesitant, he didn’t want to tell his Mother what she must already know but somehow he still felt he should warn her. She smiled at him and nodded.
“It’s alright Steve, I’ve been in many hospital rooms before.”
Well it was true Stephen thought and opened the door. He moved to beside Felix’s side marvelling once more at the slight flush of colour that was now in his cheeks. As he reached the bed he realised his Mother was no longer beside him and turned to look at her. Joey was frozen in the doorway, staring at the slight form on the bed. Her face was white and her eyes were full of a horror Stephen had never seen there before. She let out a little cry and stepped forward. Stephen was afraid she was about to faint and her hurried to her side but she brushed him away and went to sit at Felix’s side. She stroked his fine hair and examined him carefully, looking at every bruise and bandage, and then turned to Stephen.
“There are so many.”
What could he say, of course there were, he’d been hit by a car! What exactly had she expected to see.
“I hadn’t realised, I didn’t think. I knew he was hurt but I was so scared for Madge.”
“He looks better now than he did.”
Stephen hadn’t meant to say it, didn’t want to fight with her while she looked so fragile, but he couldn’t help himself.
“I left him all alone when he was so sick. I’ve sat by the side of so many girls when their parents couldn’t be there and I left my own son on his own.”
This time Stephen had to bite his tongue not to point out that Felix had not been alone. He had no idea how to deal with her. No idea what to say. Should he comfort her? She was obviously in some sort of shock and yet she was supposed to be the adult here. In all his imaginings of her arrival Stephen had never once considered dealing with this pale woman who seemed so confused and uncertain.

I'm beginnng to think that there may be more going on with Joey than we thought.

*Thoughtful*

That was very good.

Mmmmmmm, so why did she not listen when Jack and Jem were telling her?

*Still not got much sympathy for her - did she think he was play-acting?*

I definitely think it was worth waiting until you were happy Sarah, I don't know what I expected but it certainly wasn't that.
Unfortunately it loks as though poor Steven has another problem to deal with.

Because she is so used to knowing everything that is going on and having things done her way. As this situation was out of her control she avoided acknowledging it in the hope that it would go away. And as she now knows it won't and she should have listened in the first place. Bit of a ramble, but hopefully makes sense!

Sarah, thank you for taking your time with this. That was an excellent part, and I feel so sorry for Stephen. I hope, if things go badly, that he doesn't hesitate to tell his mother to get out!

I agree that there is more going on here than we know. Joey is, perhaps going to wake up the fact that the boys have needs too. Poor Steve has still not got the support he needs and I don't think he is ready for the role reversal stage yet.

He was quite naturally expecting his mother to take over from him, not give him more support problems! More soon please!!

I wonder what is the mystery surrounding Joey? Is it simply that she didn't listen to Jack and Jem, or is there more to it than that.

#332:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Thu Feb 05, 2004 4:56 pm

I expect she's angry with herself but doesn't want to show it, hurt by Jem's criticism and shocked by the state of her son. Her bluff is the only way she knows how to cope.

A little bit more now, there should be some more coming later this evening depending on whether I manage to escape the lure of the bar this evening Very Happy

Stephen was spared having to deal with his Mother there and then when Felicity and Con entered the room. Stephen could see Felicity’s hand tighten in her sister’s as she saw Felix and he held his hand out to her. She walked towards him and let him put his arm around but she didn’t let go of Con’s hand. Felicity looked from her brother to her Mother who was sitting on the other side of the bed stroking Felix’s hair.
“He doesn’t look much like my Felix...”
“I thought that when I saw him first Fliss, he’s there though, under the bandages and behind the paleness.”
Stephen answered, unsure Joey had even heard the Fliss speak. She had though, and she looked up at Felicity and smiled slightly.
“Hospitals always make people look slightly different don’t they. He’s still your brother though.”
Felicity let go of Con’s hand and reached forward hesitantly to touch Felix. She sort of stroked his hand and then the bandage on his temple, and then letting out a small cry she turned into Stephen’s embrace and sobbed brokenly.
“Shhh... Fliss darling, it’s alright, we’re here and Felix is getting better.”
Stephen held the shaking girl and looked to his sister for help. Con came to embrace Felicity from behind so that she was surrounded.
“Come on dearest, you knew he was going to look ill but you’ve got to be brave like you promised Dad. Just think what Aunty Hilda would say.”
Felicity pulled back and turned to look at Con with a tear stained face.
“She’d say I hadn’t been raised to be a spineless jellyfish but a strong woman.” Felicity gulped hard, “I don’t want to be strong though I just want Felix.”
With that she started crying again but Joey had moved round the bed and this time, the mention of her old headmistress seemed to bring her back to her senses, and she took Felicity in her arms. She held the frightened girl and muttered soothing words into her hair and slowly the tears began to subside. Felicity had been missing her Mother badly for the last few days and having her back again was calming her in a way Con, Len, Hilda and even Jack had all failed to. Stephen couldn’t watch. He felt sick in his stomach seeing how easily Fliss fell into her Mother’s arms and allowed herself to be comforted. He turned back to Felix and smoothed the cover over his brother to avoid looking at the pair. Con could see that Stephen was upset by something and she saved it up to talk to him about when she got the chance. Whatever was wrong with Stephen she was going to find out, for now though she too turned to her small brother on the bed and held his hand, willing him to get better.

Poor, poor Stephen! I'm sure Con won't be able to understand it, and it might turn her against him, which will be unfair on the boys. And how tragic that Felicity should turn to Stephen for comfort. Maybe it's not just the boys who are denied maternal love. Maybe it's really only the triplets who have ever been given full attention. Crying or Very sad

No she turned to Stephen first, it was only when her crying disturbed Joey that she came over to comfort Felicity.

Hope Con can empathise with how Stephen's feeling.

Maybe Joey was the hit and run driver who knocked Felix down and that's why she's so weird! (Hope my strange what if's haven't spoilt story)
Also think that Trips are the only ones of Joey's children who got any maternal support, she was always leaving Cecil behind or making her go and stay with other people.
More soon please! Razz

*agrees with the suggestions that the trips seem to get most of Joey's attention - but then they were also the ones most burden with helping raise siblings.

I think Con is astute enough to see Joey's failings. I had hoped that Felix might respond to Felicity. Crying or Very sad

After Felicity had calmed down Stephen took her and Con, with their bags to a nearby hotel where they were to stay and left them there to clean off the dirt of their journey properly and have a rest. Returning to the hospital he found his Mother still by Felix’s side but looking slightly less pale.
“Is this really him looking better?”
“Yes. He was so white before I hardly believed he was alive.”
“I didn’t realise.”
Joey was speaking so softly that Stephen had to strain to hear her words. He wasn’t sure he’d heard her right either.
“Didn’t Dad tell you? Or Uncle Jem?”
He didn’t say that everyone else seemed to have worked it out.Joey just shook her head, she had barely thought about Felix at all after she had heard Stephen was with him. Worry for Madge had filled her mind leaving little room for any of her children other than an occasional call to Len to check on her and Meg and the information that Jack was passing on.
“Mother... I think perhaps Geoff would like to see you.”
Stephen was slightly hesitant, it was hardly his place to tell her to go and see her other son but he had decided that whilst she was behaving so much like a child herself he had to.
“He was very badly frightened by the accident when it happened. The school’s been very good but he... he asked for you.”
Stephen didn’t tell her that Geoff had asked for his brother first. Geoff needed his Mother and Stephen wasn’t going to jeopardise that. Joey looked up at her eldest son.
“I’ll go to him, haven’t you seen him yet.”
“Of course I have!” Now Stephen was struggling to control his temper again, “I’d hardly leave him there worrying himself sick, all alone. I’ve seen him most days and he even came to see Felix a few days ago but it seemed wisest to leave him with his friends.”
“Is there a bus I can catch to get to the school?”
“Yes, it stops just in front of the hospital, there should be one coming in a few minutes.”
“I’ll catch that then, although I shouldn’t leave Felix alone.”
“He won’t be alone, I’m here.”
“Of course. I’ll go and find the bus stop then, it’s just outside you say?”
“Yes, just tell the driver you’re going to the school and he’ll show you where to get off.” Stephen really felt like he was talking to a child now, “I’ll call ahead and tell them you’re coming and then I’ll give Dad the latest news... unless you want to?”
“No you call him now, tell him I’ll talk to him later.”
Stephen watched as his Mother walked off. She seemed so young to him now, not in control of the situation at all, like she was waiting for someone else to tell her what to do. He shook himself, no point in worrying over what he couldn’t change was there? It was just like Joey to breeze in as if nothing mattered before she arrived and, when Stephen thought about it, it was just like her to expect someone else (Jack, Madge, Hilda, one of the doctors at the San) to be in charge. What else had he expected?

#342:  Author: LesleyLocation: Rochester, Kent PostPosted: Thu Feb 05, 2004 11:52 pm

Ohhhh! Interesting take on this! That Joey is unable to take on adult responsibilties having handed them to others all her life!

But how dare she assume that Geoff was left alone! fume hammer

#343:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2004 12:34 am

this looks like a Joey who has reverted to childhood in the fear of losing Madge who took the place of her mother.
(Maybe? Confused )

I'm sure all will be revealed in good time. Only Sarah knows the answers.

Very interesting Sarah, I agree with the points made about Jo always having someone around to take charge, possibly thefact that Jack is quite a few years older than her hasn't helped either.

Joey in this is reminding me a little of Streetcar Named Desire. She seems as helpless as Blanche in the final scene with the doctor!

Of course, EBD always portrayed Madge and then Jo giving over all responsibility to their husbands! I'm not sure how true to life that was, but married women had no financial independence even when I got married! I couldn't sign any sort of loan agreement, even if I was paying for it!

Sarah this is excellent, and you've made us go from wanting to torture Joey, to wondering what nis wrong with her and feeling a vestige of concern. Wonderful writing to be able to change our feelings for a character in that way.

Hope to see more later.

I did. the real pleasure was in walking out of the showroom, saying 'Since you obviously do not have the intelligence to speak to the person who is buying the car, I cannot rely on the information that you are providing. Therefore, I shall go elsewhere.'

What made it even better was that the manager was able to hear what I said.

Nice one Jennie! I bet he was totally gobsmacked!! I just hope he got a rollicking from his manager on losing a potential sale!!

Isn't it wonderful that some men think we can't manage without them?!

#356:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2004 4:30 pm

Very Happy Well done Jennie! Some people never learn though, only a couple of years back we went to buy a new car and the salesman spent the whole time talking to my Dad until we actually had to tell him that this was going to be Mum's car. We didn't buy from them in the end either surprisingly Evil or Very Mad

No Joey in this one but lots of Stephen and what he's feeling.

Whilst Joey was away visiting Geoff Con and Felicity returned to the hospital. The siblings sat in Felix’s room in near silence. None of them really had a lot to say. They were all to focussed on their brother to engage in any kind of small talk. There had been a few questions about Felicity’s term, Con’s study for her novel in Paris and how Chris was growing but now they were silent. After a while Stephen realised that Felicity wasn’t just being quiet, she’d actually fallen asleep. She had laid her head on the bed next to Felix and just dropped off to sleep.
“She must be exhausted poor kid.”
Con looked up at her brother who was watching the twins affectionately.
“She hasn’t been sleeping well since she heard. I think if it wasn’t for Dad’s ‘making sure’ she would barely have slept at all.”
“It’s a lot for her to cope with. I’m finding it difficult enough and I’m a fair bit older than her.”
“Plus he’s her twin, makes all the difference in the world.”
Stephen looked up at his sister, she had tears in her eyes.
“You’re imagining Len or Margot lying there aren’t you?”
“Yes. It would be so hard. I got so worried when Len went into labour as it was. I think it’s almost like I feel every bit of pain they have. They’re always with me so that when they hurt it hurts me too.”
“And now poor Fliss is having to watch Felix lie there.”
For a moment Con and Stephen just watched the pair. Felicity’s skin was almost as pale as Felix’s from her tiredness and watching her back rise and Stephen noticed that it was exactly in time with the faint rise and fall of Felix’s chest.
“Although I wish she could have been spared this I’m glad you both came.”
“It must have been hard for you alone, I wish you’d let me come in the first place Steve.”
“No. I was right, Fliss needed you more than me. You were right to go to her and to bring her here. Maybe she’ll wake him.”
Con looked at her brother. She hadn’t really had much to do with him growing up. She’d been a quiet child, Len was the one who led them all, and though she loved her brothers she didn’t much like their rougher games. He was looking thoughtful now, watching Felix intently and with a deep love in his eyes that reminded Con of how he looked at Chris. While he was still and quiet she thought she had her chance to ask him what was wrong but she didn’t quite know how to start.
“I wish Len was here...”
“What?”
Stephen turned to Con, she’d only whispered her hope but he’d just caught it.
“I said I wish that Len were here, she’d know what to do.”
“About what? She could hardly do anymore for Felix than you or me or Fliss.”
“About you Steve. About whatever it is that’s upsetting you.”
Stephen tried to break eye contact with her, her look was altogether to searching for him.
“It’s just watching Felix, Connie, nothing more.”
“That’s not true. I might not be as observant as Len or Mother but I can tell when by baby brother is hurting.”
Stephen laughed slightly, “Len may be more observant than you but you see more than Mother.”
There was a bitterness in his tone that Con recognised from before. So it was their Mother that had upset Stephen then.
“Why do you say that?” Con asked the question lightly, as if it wasn’t important at all, “she’s famed for her people skills.”
“Maybe.”
“Steve, talk to me, please. You can’t go on like this.”
“Why not? I always have done.”
Now Con was really worried, she had no idea what had Stephen so angry and bitter and hurt. She just looked at him, willing him to open up to her and praying that she’d know what to say.
“She didn’t come Con. He was so ill and so close to death and she didn’t even call. She’s never been to his school before. I had to tell her to go and see Geoff. She’s not mentioned how Mike and Charles might be taking it though I’m sure she asked you for news of Cecil and Phil and probably called Len herself. She isn’t good with people at all, just girls.”
Stephen drew in a ragged breath and steadied himself.
“We were all brought up largely by Anna and our other nurses because she was too busy with her writing and the school but whereas she took you girls to school with her and entered into your lives with great interest as soon as you were old enough to become Chalet School girls yourselves she never paid any attention to her sons. Did you know she never congratulated Charles on his degree result? Of course she told everyone on the Platz but she never said well done to him. She practically drove Mike away to sea. He’s so angry at her for labelling him as the black sheep. He’d never say it as he knows how much you love her but he felt like he’d been sent away. He’s going to be a great officer some day from what his superiors tell me but I bet Mother still thinks of him as the naughtiest of her boys. Felix lay here for days before she came and Geoff asked for me not her when he was scared. I know you triplets did a lot to look after us but I’ve been looking after the boys all my life. They need her and she doesn’t seem to see it.”
Con was shocked. So much hate flowing from Stephen’s mouth. It was all wrong, it had to be. She loved all her children, their Mother couldn’t really have neglected her sons that much. Charles and Mike were happy and of course it must have been hard being so far away but there was no boarding school for boys near them.
“How long...?”
Con’s eyes filled with tears, unable to accept what Stephen said and incapable of offering him any support. She wished more than ever that Len was there. Stephen did too.
“It doesn’t matter Con. I said before. I’ll deal with it. It’s nothing for you to worry about, you just look after yourself.”
She didn’t understand, and she didn’t want to push him any further in case he destroyed the image of her beloved Mother anymore, all she could do was hold his hand and watch the twins on the bed.

Con will surely live up to her reputation of saying exactly what she thinks - tact never was her best friend, although she did get better as she grew up. But something as close to home as this? I hope she gives Joey a piece of her mind!

She could do it because she's a wonderful author.

That must have been emotianally draining to write.

BTW, there are perfectly good boys' boarding schools in Vevey, Geneva, and in other Swiss cities; it makes one think, doesn't it?

ETA: especially when we read that the Maynard boys were sent to prep school before Public School, and prep schools start at the age of seven/eight, and it was too far to come home for half-term.

#371:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Sat Feb 07, 2004 6:23 pm

Jo would probably explain that away by comparing them to the public schools in Switzerland to which Margot is threatened to be sent. I suppose Jack probably went to the same school the boys go to, and so there is a feeling of the known about it.

BTW, do we get more story soon?

#372:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Sat Feb 07, 2004 8:05 pm

Don't forget Joey actually sent Mike away earlier than that, he got sent off to Winnie Embury to share a tutor with her sons in New Mistress (which I have just finished and am now feeling very uncharitable towards Joey, be warned...) This is just a short bit of a scene with Fliss and Stephen I'm not sure when there will be more as I'm oof to a "slumber party" and expect to be VERY tired tomorrow plus I want to add in some stuff from New Mistress so don't look for anything until Sunday evening at the earliest!

The day went on, the hours dragged even with others there, and Stephen realised that he had been assuming that when Joey came something would happen. The unchanged state of Felix was worrying him again, the euphoria of the morning had soon worn off and he was back waiting with no idea of what would happen. They took turns in sitting by the bedside allowing Stephen to phone Lucy again and giving him the chance to go outside and walk, stretch his legs, and try to escape the feeling of being trapped in the hospital. Lucy had put Chris on the phone and hearing him burble happily Stephen wished he was back at home again. He had hadn’t even been away a week but he missed his baby boy and most of all he missed his wife, her calm understanding and easy sympathy. Everything was too tense at the hospital. Con wasn’t quite meeting his eyes anymore. He knew she didn’t want to believ any of what he had said to her but that she couldn’t quite ignore it either He hadn’t wanted to damage her Mother in her eyes, Joey was a good mother to her girls mostly and he hated the thought that Con was having to imagine her in any other light. He didn’t like theat Len seemed to understand him either, it had never been his aim to upset any of his siblings he just wished that his Mother would treat them all the same and not send her boys so far away when she clung to her girls. A little after supper Stephen found himself alone with Felicity. It had been hard to convince her to leave Felix’s side at any point but the adults had insisted that she couldn’t just sit there all day. Now though she was back at Felix’s side.
“Do you think he’ll wake up soon?”
“I don’t know Fliss, the doctors say there’s no way to know exactly when he’ll wake.”
“I thought maybe if I talked to him he’d wake up to hear the stories. I was telling him about Cecil getting on to the Netball team but he didn’t seem to hear me at all.”
“He might have done, he might be able to hear everything we say but his body might not be ready to wake up yet.”
“That’s what Mamma said.”
Stephen was sitting on the opposite side of the bed to his little sister and he reached across to hold her hand.
“It’s true. Don’t give up now, we had a good sign this morning, just because he didn’t wake up as soon as you arrived doesn’t mean he’s not going to.
“I know that. I do, really. I just feel so helpless. I should be able to DO something.”
“There isn’t anything anyone can do Fliss. We just have to wait and pray. It’s hard but that’s how it is.”
“When I’m at school I always like to be doing things.”
Felicity was watching her twin’s face.
“I want to be in all the sports teams I can be, I’m a sub pree now and I think next year I’ll be a full prefect, I do music lessons and all the extras I’m allowed and I’ve even started to help coach the juniors in French. I hate just sitting here. Felix is better at that than me.”
Felicity looked up at Stephen and he could see the pain in her eyes.
“Sometimes there is nothing you can do Fliss, sometimes you do have to sit and wait. It’s very nearly impossible to sit by while someone you love is hurting but that’s what you have to do for the best. We can pray for Felix but otherwise we have to let God and nature work on him.”
Stephen looked at his sister, she looked old to his eyes. Somewhere along the line his leggy little sister had started to grow into a woman.
“It’s a hard lesson to learn but we have to. There is nothing more we can do.”
“I don’t think I can...”
There were tears falling down her cheeks now. Stephen squeezed her hand tightly in his own.
“I know you can. You’re strong Fliss, be strong for Felix so that when he wakes up he can see a smiling sister waiting for him.”
After that they sat in silence. Felicity was watching Felix but across her face different emotions were racing and Stephen knew that she was trying hard to learn this new lesson. He didn’t let go of her hand until Con came to take her away for supper.

Sarah, this is such a wonderful emotional story. I have a friend who went through rejection from his dad and the scenes with Stephen thinking about Jo remind me so much of him.
Hope Felix makes a good recovery and that Felicity is there to see him come round.

Thank you for that lovely chant Carolyn but did someone let a pack of cats on to the board because there was this awful noise coming from it earlier? vampire ROFL Kiss
Here's a bit more for you... this is getting very hard to write, I keep making myself either cry ir get angry, my friends are beginning to ask if there's something wrong Embarassed

After supper all four Maynards were back in the small room watching Felix. Stephen thought he had seen Felix move slightly earlier, just a twitch of the hand, but no one else had noticed so he decided it must have been a trick of the light. Con went off to Jack, they’d been checking in regularly with him and this time Con wanted to call so that she could check on her triplet. Stephen was feeling very weary of sitting there in that room, wishing he could be almost anywhere else and looking forward to a night away. Part of him didn’t want to leave Felix but most of him was very grateful that his Mother would be the one staying tonight. A noise at the door made him turn his head, it was Katy, the night staff were coming on. Looking down at his watch Stephen realised it was nearly ten o’clock.
“Fliss, look at the time, I think we ought to be going and finding a bed for you.”
Stephen looked at his Mother and then at his sister who was smothering a yawn.
“I think that sounds like a good idea, where did you put your coat? Mine’s over here.”
Felicity stumbled away from the bed and over to the sofa where her coat was lying. Stephen followed her and picked up his small bag and jacket.
“You don’t need to come with us Steve. Con knows where the hotel is and I’m sure I can manage the girls.”
Stephen thought he’s misheard her for a moment.
“Why walk all the way over there and then back again?”
“Back again? Not until tomorrow morning. If you think it’s too far I could always call a taxi.”
Joey looked worriedly at Felicity, she was looking very tired.
“Perhaps that would be the best idea. Nurse, could you find a taxi for us.”
Katy looked at Stephen for a moment and then bustled out of the room. She was rather afraid he was about to blow up at his Mother and she didn’t really want to be present.
“You’re not staying with Felix then Mother.”
His voice was dangerously quiet, like he was trying to keep control of himself with great difficulty.
“Well of course not, I can’t stay her all night. Your father always found me a room in the hospital nearby when one of you was ill but as there isn’t one here I’ll have to go to the hotel.”
“They’ve given us bedding to go on this sofa so you can stay right here beside Felix.”
“Steve the doctors will watch Felix tonight I don’t need to be here.”
“Yes you do. Felix needs you here. You can’t leave him alone again.”
Now Stephen’s voice was no longer quiet. He was staring at his Mother like she was completely out of her mind. He was furious with her for even considering leaving Felix.
“He’s not going to be alone, the doctors and nurses are here and you’re staying. Aren’t you.”
Temporarily robbed of speech Stephen stared at Joey with his mouth wide open. This couldn’t be happening. She couldn’t seriously be leaving.
“We’ll be back first thing tomorrow Steve. I’ve got to go now and put Fliss to bed.”
“Con could do that. You should be here with your son.”
“No Stephen. I’m going now. You’re right. He’s my son and I know what’s best for him and that’s for me to be rested and ready for what tomorrow brings.”
“YOU know what’s best for him? How? You haven’t been here. You have no idea how bad it was. You breeze in here and take over and I thought for a while that might be good but now you’re LEAVING. You are actually going to walk out of this hospital whilst your son lies here.”
“Stephen!”
A voice at the door stopped Stephen in his tracks. Con was standing there looking very surprised. She came into the room and grabbed her coat and Fliss and started to leave.
“Con... I’m...”
She turned round and looked back at Stephen and her Mother. Stephen was looking distraught and Con’s eyes softened.
“I’m just taking Fliss away Steve, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Stephen was horrified, he hadn’t meant to say any of that in front of Fliss. She was huddled in close to Con now looking at him with complete confusion. Looking back into Con’s face he saw the confusion mirrored but her eyes were turned towards Joey’s face and there was a great deal of hurt in them too. Just how long had she been standing there? How much had she heard? He was snapped out of his reverie by the door shutting. Standing in front of him was the nurse, Katy, his Joey was gone.

da da dahh.
As sad as it is for her, I'm glad Con caught that little conversation. She certainly seems to have more sympathy for Steve now.

thanks Sarah, that was a lovely post. I can understnd how this must be getting very emotionally difficult to write.

I can't believe Joey would leave Felix now that she's seen his state. What is going on in her head?
Poor Stephen. Good for him, someone had to say something. The poor lads only young, he shouldn't have all that responisibilty.

I just don't understand Jo! It's an instinct to be there for your child no matter what the problem and in a life or death situation like this, any normal mother would be distraught.

I really feel for Steve, he's so strong and yet so vulnerable. I hope Con heard the whole conversation!!!

Can understand what KB meant though - i wonder if anything will get through to Joey.

Years ago I had a sister with leukaemia - for six weeks she was at the Royal Marsden Hospital - some 2 hours drive from where my family lived at the time. My mum had me and my baby brother to look after and no close relatives nearby, my father worked nights. For six weeks he would come home from work, grab a few hours sleep, then drive himself my mum and brother to the hospital, they would stay there the afternoon, they'd arrive back in time to retrieve me from a next door neighbours - where I'd gone after school, Dad would have something to eat then go to work. At the weekend the only difference was i went along. When your child is ill you will do anything

Every time I go to the next page, the board has a critical error, I have to keep going back and refreshing. It is well annoying, but worth it. Seem to be writing the identical post on every thread, but really, there are so many good stories on the go at the moment.

*Chants*

*Checks and realises Sarah already posted some today*

*Adjusts chant to sound hopeful of more, but sympathetic to the emotional-drainingness of writing the story.*

I'd like to remind people that I am neither Rachel nor Carolyn or KB so Felix is safe... probably Twisted Evil

For a long time after his family had left Stephen sat in the dark trying to calm himself. He couldn’t believe the conversation he’d just had. She had left Felix, left her son who had still not woken up after being hit by a car. Stephen had been coming more and more to the conclusion that Joey really didn’t care for her sons as much as her daughters but this was ridiculous, this was as if she didn’t care at all. He tried to remember illnesses of his other siblings of the many Maynard adoptees. Joey would always go to the hospital to be with them, always. Mary-Lou had once told him how his Mother had sat with her after her accident because her own Mother couldn’t be there so she even did it for people outside the family. Girls outside the family Stephen reminded himself. After an hour or so he was beginning to relax a little, thinking back he had no idea where Joey had been during the nights her children were ill. For tooth ache or any minor ailment she might have occasionally watched over the sick child but when in the hospital Stephen was fairly sure his Dad must have made her go and sleep. Perhaps this was just one of her many quirks, she truly thought it was best for Felix if she got some rest. Stephen tried hard to focus on this thought but he still couldn’t silence the bitter voice in the back of his head. Round and round he thought, if it was Fliss lying there she wouldn’t have left. It didn’t matter if he was right or wrong it was all he could think about. Suddenly he remembered that Fliss had heard everything he had said to Joey. He felt awful that Con was finding out how Stephen saw Joey and how her Mother’s care differed between her girls and boys but for Fliss to hear? He was going to have to find someway of reassuring the poor girl. Maybe apologising in front of her but then he wasn’t sure he was ever going to apologise for the things he had said, after all weren’t they all true? Stephen tossed and turned for most of the night, he got a little sleep but even that was filled with arguing voices in his head. He wanted to protect Fliss and Con and Felix and all the rest from ever feeling what he did towards their Mother and yet he wanted to tell Joey exactly what he thought of her somewhere no one would interrupt and in the centre of all his dreams was Felix’s white form lying on the bed.

Stephen was fast asleep in the early hours of the morning when two nurses rushed in and switched on the lights. Looking over to Felix’s bed he saw that his brother was no longer still and quiet. Felix was thrashing about on the bed muttering and moaning. His face was flushed with colour but this time it didn’t fill Stephen with hope. He moved slowly towards the bed, anxious to help his baby brother but not wanting to get in the nurses’ way. They seemed to be injecting Felix with something but were finding it hard as he wouldn’t stay still. Finally Stephen came and held the boy down. He could feel Felix trying to move beneath his hands and at the back of his mind he was glad that the awful stillness had been broken but mostly he was worried about what this latest development might mean.
“He’s waking up and he’s probably in a lot of pain right now and confused as well. Talk to him, it might be the best way to calm him down.”
It took Stephen a moment to realise that the nurse was speaking to him, she was looking at him kindly and he wasn’t to know that in her mind she was roundly cursing Joey for leaving her son, a Mother’s voice was just what was needed right now.
“He’s... he’s alright though?”
“He should be, we’ve given him something for the pain but if you can get him to calm down and fall asleep naturally that would be best for him.”
Stephen let his grip on Felix loosen slightly and started to speak in as calm a voice as he could although it trembled slightly as he began.
“Felix baba, it’s me, it’s Steve. You’re safe here and nothing can hurt you. The doctors are looking after you and I’m watching over you. I’m here Felix.”
Felix’s breathing seemed to slow slightly and his body relaxed under Stephen’s hands.
“Good boy, you’ve got to calm down now and go to sleep. Just relax and I’ll stay here and watch over you. I’ll not leave you baba. Shhhh...”
Stephen held one of Felix’s hands in his own and with his other hand he smoothed the hair on Felix’s forehead.
“Shhh... baba I’m just going to sit here while you sleep. Just like when you were little. When we were all at home and everything was safe. You remember how we used to love sleeping altogether in one room when there were storms. Charles was always scared but you were so brave. Well now you’re just as safe as we were then and you’ve got to go to sleep.”
Stephen started humming a lilting melody under his breath. It was a simple tune that he half remembered from sometime in his childhood. If he’d known it was the Red Sarafan, Robin’s song and the lullaby Joey had used on all her children when they had been afraid, he might have stopped but he didn’t know and under it’s calming influence Felix slipped at last into a natural sleep.

And thank you for not killing him.

I'm so glad that Felix's condition changed while Steve was there and not Jo!
Feeling more hopeful for Felix now.
Concerned about Steve's mental state. He's only 24 after all and has had next to no sleep.
Still wondering about Jo's attitude.
Wanting more!
