#1: Shakespeare's Heroes Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Fri Apr 02, 2004 4:15 pm

This small sparkling purple leaf has been nibbling at my toes for a while, so I thought I'd post the first part as a taster, to see what you all thought of it. If there's not a response I'll keep it all to myself, my preciousssssssssss

****************************

The music died away, leaving only the sound of cheers, screams and shouts. The seven members of the pop group, Shakespeare’s Heroes danced their way off stage and towards the dressing rooms. Troy and Cressida, the twins and the youngest of the family, had found a camera somewhere and bounced around backstage taking photos of all and sundry. Desda, Mac and Romeo found themselves shepherded into the girl’s dressing room by their manager, Toby Willoughby, while the remaining pair, Cori and Lia, were besieged momentarily by journalists. I say ‘momentarily’ as a shriek of “Grandma Jo!” echoed round the backstage area, startling everybody and giving the band members a chance to rush to the girl’s room, shutting the door on everybody else. There, squashed into a corner of the small and crowded dressing room was an upright elderly lady, her white hair still showing streaks of black, and an expression on her face that had made many a Chalet School Middle shake in her shoes. There was a heavy silence while Jo Maynard inspected each of her youngest son’s children from head to toe. Finally she spoke. ‘Desdemona Maynard, what on earth is that?’
Desda looked down at her bare midriff and tried to speak, ‘I…er…it’s…er…um…’
‘It’s a tattoo, Grandma Jo,’ replied Mac, who was quite brave around his rather formidable grandmother, unless he was the one under scrutiny. Grandma Jo glanced round at her other granddaughters, but they had hurriedly pulled on extra clothes where necessary. So she transferred her attention to the boys. ‘Troilus, where is your shirt?’
‘I…um…I lost it,’ replied Troy, not daring to tell Grandma Jo that he’d flung it out to the audience.
Grandma Jo frowned, ‘What business had you losing it? I dread to think what you were doing having it unbuttoned in the first place! Put something on, quickly, you’ll catch your death of cold,’
Troy automatically muttered an apology and tried to hide behind Mac, conveniently ignoring the last command. Mac shot a look of desperation at Desda and leaned down to Grandma Jo, laying a hand on her arm, ‘It’s terribly late, Grandma Jo. Why don’t you go back to your hotel and we can see you tomorrow, when we’re all less tired,’
‘Oh, that’s a good idea. We could have lunch, or…something,’ Desda took hold of Grandma Jo’s other arm. Jo looked up into the bright blue eyes that were so like her youngest son, Geoff’s and allowed herself to be helped to her feet, ‘That is a good idea, Desdemona. I’m at the Hatfield, which I believe is where you are staying? I can meet you all in the lounge before lunch and we can go in together. Thank you Macbeth,’
Mac, holding the door open, flinched at the use of his hated full name, but his smile never faltered as Grandma Jo was escorted to a waiting taxi by Desda and Toby, who had appeared as if by magic.
‘Sorry, everybody,’ said Desda, on her return, ‘But I had to do something,’
‘Of course you did,’ said Cori, soothingly, ‘She would have been here all night otherwise, yibbling on about how wonderful the Chalet School was and how things just aren’t the same nowadays!’
‘But I liked being at the Chalet School,’ objected Cressida.
‘I know you did, so did I. It’s managed to move with the times, unlike Grandma Jo. I’m sure she doesn’t even see the computers and TVs and things when she visits! And she probably wonders why there’s an interloper in Miss Annersley’s study,’
‘Never mind all that, Cori. You’re just as bad as she is!’ Mac pulled the door open again, in preparation to go his own dressing room, ‘Just remind me to have at least two bottles of gin before lunch tomorrow!’
‘She isn’t that bad, Mac!’ laughed Lia, the most easygoing of the seven.
‘She may not be, but I need something to fortify me before an afternoon of being called Macbeth! Why couldn’t Mum and Dad have called me John or Robert, or something plain? Or at least have been acting in a different play.’
‘What, like Coriolanus or Timon of Athens?’ asked Cressida, mischievously.
‘Be thankful that you weren’t a girl,’ said Lia, pushing him out of the room, ‘Lady Macbeth’s first name was Gruoch!’
‘God help us!’ floated down the corridor as Mac walked off, followed by Troy and Romeo.

Especially for Lesley, Carolyn, Xanthe and Pat.

The next morning Cori and Lia, or to give them their proper names; Cordelia and Ophelia, were the first two up. They rushed round waking the others, as it was after twelve, and they were expected in the lounge at one. When they rushed downstairs at 1.00pm, with no regard for the usual protocol that accompanied them everywhere, they saw to their relief that Grandma Jo was not alone. ‘Auntie Phil, Grandma Jo didn’t say you were coming,’ Romeo plonked himself down next to his aunt. ‘I wasn’t given much chance,’ replied Jo with some asperity. Romeo wasn’t at all abashed, he merely bestowed his heartbreaking smile upon his Grandma and said, ‘Things are always rather rushed after a concert. Sorry if you felt pushed out,’
Phil choked on her glass of tonic water, while Troy tried to distract Grandma Jo with polite conversation. As the maitre d’ came and announced that their table was ready at that point, it gave the more tactful members of the party plenty of time to change the subject. Dinner was a lively, pleasant meal. In spite of their grumbles in private, the Maynards loved their grandma. After the meal was over the party moved back to the lounge to chat and relax over coffee. Mac, Troy and Romeo squashed together on a sofa to listen to their female relatives catch up on gossip about various mutual acquaintances. Their voices seemed to blur and mingle into one, slowing down like a walkman running low on batteries.

Suddenly Troy woke with a jump. He didn’t even realise he’d gone to sleep. The girls appeared to have finished their conversation. In fact everybody had stopped talking and were silent, a rare occurrence in the large Maynard clan. Troy suddenly noticed that he was lying down. Forcing his eyes open with a great effort Troy took in his surroundings. He was lying on a bed in a curtained off place. The curtains were patterned with an old fashioned print of poppies and ears of wheat. There was some kind of chest of drawers next to him, and a chair with poppy patterned cushions. Looking over the edge of the bed Troy saw that even the rug matched the scheme. Shaking his head Troy lay down again and thought, groggily, ‘I’ve been listening to Grandma Jo and the Chalet School for too long!’ Rolling over onto his back he was unable to prevent his heavy eyes from closing and before he could stop it, he was asleep again. Cressida was the next to awake. Pushing her dark curls out of her eyes she sat up. All tiredness left her as she noticed her surroundings. What on earth was she doing back at school, and school as it had been in its early days? Cressida scrambled off the bed, wondering what was going on. Where was the lounge of the hotel? Where were the rest of her family? Creeping out of the cubicle she had found herself in, she stood in the large dormitory. All the cubicle curtains had been drawn, and there was no sound apart from quiet breathing. Parting the curtains of the cubicle next to hers, Cressida stuck her head through the gap. Sprawled on the bed, her face in the pillow was her eldest sister, Desda. Confusion creased Cressida’s brow. She couldn’t be at school if Desda was here. There were 10 years between them, and Desda had left four years before Cressida arrived at the school. She moved onto the next cubicle, and her frown deepened. Lying on his back, mouth open, was Romeo. Now Cressida knew something was wrong. A noise in the corridor sent her flying back to her own cubicle and she’d just laid down when the door opened and somebody came in – two somebody’s by the sound of their footsteps. Cressida closed her eyes and tried to breathe deeply as the two people went from cubicle to cubicle. They seemed to spend an awful lot of time looking in at Cressida’s cubicle, but finally they moved away. ‘I told you not to put too much in,’ came the mutter of a low voice.
‘I didn’t think I had, but they all ate such a lot.’ Both voices were vaguely familiar to Cressida, but she couldn’t quite place them. The first voice chuckled, ‘I wondered if they might. Come on, we’ll come back in a couple of hours. It should have worn off by them. Lock the door, just in case.’
Cressida heard the click as the door was locked and waited until the footsteps had died away before getting up again. She made the rounds of the dormitory and discovered that each bed held one of her brothers and sisters, Auntie Phil and Grandma Jo. A sudden rustle made her go back to one of the cubicles and she put her head between the curtains just as her twin, Troy, opened his eyes and looked around (again, had Cressida known it). Those eyes widened as they fell on Cressida. She made violent motions for him to be quiet as she slid into the tiny room. Troy sat up, ‘Where the f…’ He was silenced by Cressida’s hand across his mouth.
‘Not so loud! We’re at school – the Chalet School, I mean, but we appear to have gone back in time. We’ve all been drugged, in our food, I assume, and been brought here for some reason, but I don’t know what it is.’
‘How do you know?’
Cressida quickly told Troy of what had happened since she woke up. Troy ran his fingers through his hair, catching in the tangles, ‘So why are we awake?’
‘We didn’t eat as much as the others, did we?’
‘I don’t think so. I know I didn’t have the cream cakes or coffee,’
‘Me neither. That must be it. We didn’t have as much of whatever they used on us.’
‘So what do we do now? Stay here, or try and escape so we can rescue the others?’
‘I’ve an idea. Wait here a minute.’ Cressida vanished, and Troy obediently waited. He could hear the oddest noises, and wondered what she was doing. Meanwhile Cressida had crept into the cubicle occupied by Grandma Jo and stealthily pulled out one of the long hairpins that held her “earphones” of plaits in place. She then crept to the door and peered into the keyhole. Waving the hairpin triumphantly she pulled the scarf she was using as a belt out of her jeans, shook it out and laid it under the bottom of the door, with most of it on the other side. Jiggling the hairpin in the lock, she heard a tiny click and a thunk as the key fell out of the lock and onto the scarf. Grinning broadly Cressida pulled the scarf back into the room and picked the key up. She took it back to Troy, who gazed at it in astonishment. ‘Where did you get that?’ he demanded.
‘Where do you normally get keys from? I got the idea from Enid Blyton. Anyway, are you going to sit here all day, gawping, or are you coming? I want to know who’s behind all this.’
Shaking his head, Troy followed Cressida to the door, wondering why none of his sisters appeared to have learned normal things when they were at school. Not that he was complaining at the present time, but his school had been so boring, lots of Latin and Maths, but nothing useful like how to rescue yourself when locked in a dormitory.

Here's a smidgin more before I disappear for a few hours!

Pushing Troy out into the corridor, Cressida locked the door after them and slid the key down her bra, reasoning that people were less likely to look for it there. The pair crept down the corridor, stopping to listen at various doors as they progressed. All appeared to be silent, though there were noises coming from somewhere in the building. Suddenly they both jumped as a voice asked sternly ‘Just who are you, and what are you doing here?’
They turned to find themselves facing a small wiry woman in nurses uniform, her arms full of freshly folded sheets. Seeing that Troy was just standing there, looking rather unnerved, Cressida spoke up, ‘Cressida Maynard, and my brother, Troilus.’
‘Maynard? And what…? Come to my room, please,’

That doesn't narrow it down too much. Other than it won't be Tyrol - or I guess it can since Maynie was at the school and Dr. Jack was at the San.

Please give us more Lulie, so that we can figure this out!

#29:  Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Sun Apr 04, 2004 7:37 am

Maynie appears in the very first book, so it could be any time! This next bit might give it away though! I'm glad you're enjoying it...

Seeing no other option the two of them followed the woman down several corridors and into a fairly large room that looked like a cross between a linen cupboard, a bed-sit and an office. Seating herself down behind the desk the woman looked at them sternly ‘Now please explain just how you got here,’
Cressida looked at Troy, who looked at Cressida. They both turned back to the woman. ‘We’d just had lunch with Grandma Jo…’ began Cressida
‘That’s Mrs Jo Maynard,’ added Troy, as if the woman should have known her.
‘And then we were suddenly asleep and when we woke up we were here. There was all of us – our brothers and sisters, and Grandma Jo and Auntie Phil, in a dormitory, just down there,’ Cressida pointed towards the door. She then explained to the woman, who was looking singularly unimpressed, about the drugged food, the people coming into the room and their being locked in. ‘And you expect me to believe that?’ enquired the woman, reaching a hand out for a telephone.
‘Well, they should still be there; we locked them in again in case the people came back. Come on, we’ll show you.’ Cressida made a beeline for the door, and Troy and the woman had no choice but to follow. The woman’s face became more and more bemused as she looked into each cubicle and it’s sleeping occupant. Coming to the last one, Cressida whispered, ‘This is Grandma Jo,’ the woman looked in, blinked, looked twice, and then a third time. ‘How odd,’ she muttered ‘She looks just like…. Oh well, never mind,’
Turning to the twins she held out her hand ‘I’ll take that key, if you don’t mind. Now I suppose the first thing is for you to come with me. I don’t know how long you’ve been here, but you will certainly want a good cup of coffee while you explain things to me in more detail, and I decide what to do,’
Obediently, being too near her own schooldays to resist, Cressida handed over the key, and the woman shepherded the pair out, locking the door behind them, ‘That dormitory isn’t used just now. We’d got it ready for emergencies, but this will keep out busy bodies,’ she said, dropping the key into her apron pocket. ‘Now, lets see.’ They were interrupted at that point by footsteps rushing up the stairs. A small girl of about thirteen came round the corner, and stopped when she saw them, guilt written all over her face. ‘What are you doing here, Josephine?’ demanded the woman. ‘I came for a clean handkerchief, Matron,’ replied Josephine, holing out something that resembled a dishrag, ‘Miss Maynard sent me,’
‘Very well. When you have got your handkerchief, take that one down to Marie to wash, and ask her to send coffee for three up to my room, and say nothing of this meeting to anybody. Do you hear me?’
‘Yes Matron,’ Josephine had noticed Troy and Cressida by this time, and was staring with dark eyes as wide as saucers. However, at Matron’s dismissal she walked sedately down the corridor and disappeared through a door at the far end. Matron beckoned the two back to her room, indicating that they should sit on a sofa, while she took an adjacent armchair.

Troy’s brain was spinning as he thought over events. Suddenly a thought occurred to him, ‘Excuse me, um…Matron, but who exactly is Miss Maynard?’
‘Mollie Maynard, she’s our Maths mistress,’ explained Matron, shortly, ‘Is she a relation of yours?’
‘Um, I think so,’ replied Troy, hesitantly. Cressida stared at him, for once she wasn’t thinking along similar lines. Matron raised her eyebrows and her voice took on a tone that made even the toughest of men blanch. ‘What do you mean, you think so?’
Luckily for Troy there was a tap on the door, and in came a maid carrying a loaded tray. She put it on the desk and bobbed a curtsey to Matron. ‘Thank you, Anna,’ said Matron, pleasantly. Anna smiled and left the room, glancing at the twins as she passed them. Both twins received a sudden jolt of fear at the look in the maid’s eye. Never had they seen such a cruel, calculating look, made all the more unnerving by the otherwise pleasant expression that Anna habitually wore. Matron, as Anna knew, had seen nothing of the look and, having poured coffee for the three of them, continued from where she had been interrupted. ‘You were telling me how you and our Miss Maynard are related,’ she said, rather pointedly. Troy gazed helplessly at her, ‘Well, it’s all rather difficult,’ he said, ‘You wouldn’t believe me for a start, and does sound rather far-fetched,’
Matron studied Troy carefully. Her training and previous work had given her an uncanny knack of being able to tell if somebody was “having her on” or not, and Troy was transparent enough for her to see that he was perfectly serious. Glancing at Cressida’s bemused face convinced Matron that this wasn’t some kind of joke. Getting to her feet she said, ‘Come on, we ought to go and see Madame about this. It’s beyond me now.’
‘Madame?’ queried Cressida in a strange voice.
‘Sorry. Miss Bettany, who owns the Chalet School, which is where you are now. She’s also the headmistress.’
Cressida stopped dead, causing Troy to fall over her. Matron turned and stared at her, then leapt forward and pushed the girl back onto the sofa. Cressida had gone so pale that Matron thought she was about to faint. Cressida gripped the edges of the sofa and breathed hard, ‘I’m fine, honest. Listen, if we go and see Madame, then you’ll understand. Sorry if that sounds rude, Matron, but really it will save me explaining twice, and it will make more sense if you hear the whole thing,’
Looking rather bemused herself, Matron silently led the two of them out of the room and through several corridors and down the stairs, before tapping at a door. A sweet, low voice said ‘Herein,’ and Matron opened the door, beckoning the twins to follow her.

Bows down to popular demand and doesn't 'leave it there'.

Madge Bettany looked up from her letters, her smile turning to a startled look as two strangers followed Matron. However her natural good manners rose to the surface and she stood up holding her hands out, ‘I didn’t hear the bell,’ she said, ‘I’m so sorry, do come in and make yourselves at home. Shall I ring for coffee?’
‘No thank you, Miss Bettany,’ replied Cressida, her voice not quite its usual self. She took one of the outstretched hands and shook it, ‘I’m Cressida Maynard, and this is my brother, Troilus,’
‘Troilus and Cressida!’ Madge laughed pleasantly, ‘Your parents are fond of Shakespeare?’
‘They’re actors, with the Royal Shakespeare Company. We were born during a run of Troilus and Cressida,’ explained Troy,
'Royal Shakespeare Company? I don't think I've heard of that one,' said Madge.
'It used to be the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, but changed its name,' explained Troy, '‘All our brothers and sisters were named after plays that Mum and Dad were in with the company at the time they were born,’
‘Oh I see, how unusual,’ Madge waved her visitors to seats and took one herself, waiting to see what they wanted. Matron thought it was about time she took a hand. ‘Madame, you didn’t hear the bell because Mr and Miss Maynard didn’t come through the door,’ she said. Madge looked blank, ‘How did they get in then?’
‘I found them in the corridor, with no idea of how they got there,’ replied Matron, truthfully. She then proceeded to tell Madge the story that the twins had told her, including her own visit to the dormitory. ‘Mr Maynard also tells me that he thinks they are some kind of relation to our own Miss Maynard,’
Madge was looking absolutely stunned and it was a few seconds before she recovered herself, ‘Related to Mollie? How?’
‘Well,’ Troy glanced at Cressida, who was looking slightly sick, and twisted his hands together, ‘She’s our great aunt, and so Miss Bettany, are you,’

The RSC was called the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre from its opening in 1879 until 1961, when it was renamed the RSC

Quickly rushes in where angels fear to tread

There was an absolute deathly silence in the room, and then Madge threw back her head and laughed. Troy and Cressida gazed helplessly at her, wondering what on earth was going to happen next. What did happen was Matron crossed the room and gave Madge a shake. ‘Stop that,’ she commanded, ‘You’ll make yourself ill, come on now.’
Madge wasn’t too far gone that she couldn’t respond to the tone in Matron’s voice. With a great effort she pulled herself together and wiped her eyes with her handkerchief. ‘That’s better,’ said Matron, briskly, ‘Now you can listen to what I have to say.’
The three of them stared at her, suddenly realising that she hadn’t joined in Madge’s laughter. Matron sat herself on the window seat where she could see them all, and they could all see her. ‘Firstly, Madge, I don’t blame you for laughing. It is the last thing that you would expect anybody to say, especially as your only sister is only thirteen years old and still at school, and she is the only possible candidate to eventually provide you with great-nieces and nephews that have a different surname to your own. Secondly I have been reading a couple of novels concerning time travel, and while the ideas are far fetched, there is no reason why those same ideas cannot be expanded on in our future, and be possible in the future where these two came from, as they have a sound scientific basis. Thirdly, I don’t suppose you’ve looked in the mirror since this morning, but both your visitors bear more than a passing resemblance to you. Also having spent some time speaking to them, they are perfectly sane, even if their clothes are what we would consider to be outlandish, if you two will excuse my being personal. There is one last thing. They are not alone, there are seven other people in the new dormitory, and one of them is the image of a grown up Joey, if not Joey herself.’
Madge was staring at Matron with her mouth hanging open and her eyes as wide as they would go, obviously not believing a word she was hearing, but trying to make sense of it all the same. Troy and Cressida were surreptitiously comparing their clothes with those that Madge and Matron were wearing, and wondering why nobody had noticed them earlier. As for Matron, she clicked her tongue in exasperation and said, ‘Don’t just sit there, Madge. Say something!’
There was a long silence while Madge fought the urge to scream as loud as she could. Finally she croaked, ‘Where is this grown up Joey? Can I see her?’

If, hypothetically, Madge was to exterminate Older Joey cos she found her insufferable what would happen to young Joey?

Chichpea - nothing would happen to the younger Joey - she'd be unaffected, but if the younger Joey was bumped off the older one would cease to exist!

Lulie this is gripping - more please!

Yah for Matey!

Well, as their name is 'Maynard', and their parents are married, surely they must belong to one of the boys? So that narrows it down a bit!

The Maynard parent is written in the drabble if you read carefully!

Also things may be a bit hit and miss over the next few days - Grandpa is staying and as he has my room, I have no computer Sad I'm on Dad's at the moment, but it isn't often I can get on here! So continue to speculate and I'll try and write more on the laptop (sadly not connected to internet)

I did wonder, with all your speculation, if I was a bit obtuse with who the Maynard parent was, but I've done a re-read and it's all there in glorious black and white. So all you who can't see it, beg the rest of us for the answer!!!!!

Anyway, I now have my bedroom back, and I even managed to do a little writing in between cooking vast meals and having to deal with Family. So here's a little more to keep you going. I did get a bit stuck, so feedback is ESSENTIAL
Wink

‘Is that wise?’ asked Cressida, ‘I mean won’t it be messing around with history or something?’
‘That’s only if you meet yourself, or your descendants,’ said Troy, ‘We’d better make sure that none of us meet Grandma Jo as a child, in case she doesn’t like us and refuses to marry Grandpa!’
‘But you’ve already met her,’ said Matron, in strangled tones, ‘When we were outside the dormitory she came upstairs for a clean handkerchief,’
‘Oh heck, of course, Josephine! I’d never thought of that,’ Troy’s tones were as strangled as Matron’s, and he looked utterly horrified. There was a sudden short silence, then Cressida jumped up, ‘She doesn’t have to know it’s us!’ she cried, ‘Just say we’re cousins or something. Then nobody need ever know, they’ll just think we’re visitors, and that will also solve explanations when we manage to get home again,’
‘I think that will be the best idea,’ said Matron, briskly, turning to a white faced Madge, ‘Though I think we ought to let Mollie know, Madame, as she may well wonder why a whole family appear suddenly with her name,’
Madge nodded, barely taking in a word that was being said, ‘Can we go and see Joey now?’ she asked. Matron looked sharply at her, ‘Just one minute,’ she said and left the room, to return bearing a small glass of something. Madge looked at it, and Matron with dislike, but Matron insisted, ‘You’ve had a nasty shock, and today looks as if it’s going to be a difficult one for you. Come on now, Madame, don’t be silly,’
Madge meekly took the glass and emptied it in a single swallow, then got to her feet, looking much better. ‘Come on then. Did you say they were in the new dormitory?’

#84:  Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Wed Apr 14, 2004 1:56 pm

Matron insisted on leading the way, as she had the key. They were all gathered round the door in the deserted corridor, waiting for Matron to find the key on her large bunch, when the door rattled and Romeo’s voice said, ‘I can’t, Grandma, it’s locked.’
‘Nonsense,’ came crisp tones, ‘If it’s locked then how did Troilus and Cressida get out? They can’t have climbed out of the window, it’s too dangerous,’
‘You don’t know our twins,’ muttered Romeo, darkly, ‘they’d think of that before using the door!’
Matron finally found the correct key and inserted it into the lock. The voices on the other side fell silent and there was a scuffle as they moved away from the door. Matron flung the door open rather theatrically and her eyes met those of an extremely tall, rather handsome young man, dressed outrageously (to Matron’s eyes) and a tall, still vigorous elderly lady. Madge, standing just behind, gasped, drawing the eyes of the pair to her. The old lady’s pale cheeks went bluish white and she staggered slightly, to be steadied by her grandson. ‘Madge?’ she gasped, ‘Whatever’s happened? This cannot be happening,’ Grandma tottered again and Romeo looked rather strained at holding up the not inconsiderable weight of Grandma Jo, but Cressida went into the nearest cubicle returning with a chair, pushing the chair against Grandma Jo’s legs, forcing her to sit down with rather a bump! Madge, pale but not quite the same nasty shade as her sister, ventured further into the room, followed by Matron and Troy. Cressida brought forth another chair for Madge, enabling the two sisters to sit facing each other. There was yet another of those awkward silences while they all tried to think of something to say.
They were “saved by the bell”, or rather by the awakening of the other five members of the Maynard family. Mac was first, who on being appraised of the situation by Troy, incidentally informing Grandma Jo and Romeo of where they were and when, went round and violently shook his three sleeping sisters until they awoke, not pleased at being treated thus. However as Mac had many more unpleasant ways of waking his nearest and dearest, they didn’t complain much, and ceased to complain at all when they realised what they had woken up to. Mac was rather gentler in waking Auntie Phil. She could suddenly revert to Head Girl mode when taken by surprise. However this time Mac was saved “the look” by the situation they were all in. This was further complicated by the arrival of Miss Mollie Maynard, brought by Matron. Mollie had just finished listening to the explanations offered to her, and was busy being convinced by Madge that the newcomers weren’t escapees from the nearest lunatic asylum, when two clicks alerted them to the outside world. The first was the quiet closing of the door, the second the door being locked again. There was a further click as the key was removed from the lock and footsteps died away down the corridor. Madge leapt up from her chair and banged on the door, ‘Matron, come back,’ she called, imperiously, ‘Let us out,’

#85:  Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Wed Apr 14, 2004 1:57 pm

There was no response. ‘What did she do that for?’ asked Phil, in surprise.
‘Perhaps she’s gone for something and has locked the door to prevent anybody looking in,’ said Cressida, hopefully.
‘But wouldn’t she have said something?’ asked Romeo, ‘She did when she went for you,’ he addressed his comment to Mollie. Mollie looked as baffled as anybody else. Suddenly Troy made them all jump by thumping the wall. ‘I’m sick of this,’ he said, ‘People playing about with time and flinging us from our “now” to this “now”. I can’t stand all this being locked in by Matrons and whoever else did it in the first place. I want to know who is doing this and why.’
‘Calm down, Troilus, there’s nothing you can do, and storming about the room ranting and raving isn’t going to get it done any faster,’ said Grandma, serenely, ‘We all want to know why we were brought here, and how, but that isn’t going to happen until the master mind behind this decides to make it happen,’
Troy stopped pacing and studied his grandmother thoughtfully, ‘Do you think so?’ he asked.
‘Troy!’ exclaimed Cori, scandalised at Troy’s tone, ‘Don’t be rude,’
‘I’m not,’ replied Troy, ‘I’ve an idea. Talk amongst yourselves,’
‘Is this really happening?’ Mollie muttered to Madge. Madge glanced at Grandma Jo, who was talking quietly to Desda, and nodded unhappily. Mollie studied the seven people who she had been told were her great nieces and nephews and wondered aloud, ‘If they can come back, do you think we can go forward?’
Madge groaned, ‘Don’t, Mollie, it’s making my head hurt as it is,’
Troy, who had been prowling round the room, suddenly turned to Madge and said, ‘Er….excuse me, er…. Sorry, I’m not too sure what to call you. It seems silly to call you “Auntie Madge” when you’re only a few years older than I am, and “Miss Bettany” is far too formal,’
‘Madame,’ said Mollie, rather sternly, ‘all the staff and girls call Miss Bettany Madame, it’s a mark of respect,’
‘Right you are,’ replied Troy, airily, ‘Thank you Aunt….Miss…Mol…oh dear,’
‘Just use our Christian names, Troilus dear,’ said Madge, gently, ‘If we’re to pass you all off as cousins then we’d better start as we mean to go on. What did you want to say?’
‘Is there anywhere near to this room that somebody could hide and watch people coming and going down the corridor?’
‘There’s a cupboard just opposite,’ replied Madge, after some thought, ‘Why?’
‘If somebody was to hide where they could see the corridor, then they’d be able to see who was behind all this. The two people who came here earlier are going to be coming back, and Matron may return also. If she’s in league with them then we’ll find that out too. We may even be able to get the keys back and let you all out. You two certainly can’t stay in here much longer. People are going to notice that you aren’t around and start to look for you,’
‘Oh. I’d not thought of that. Yes, hiding in the cupboard would be the best idea. And also, there’s a spare key in my office for emergencies, but I’d rather it wasn’t taken straight away in case it gets taken from you. It’s in my desk drawer.’
‘Oh, I won’t be going,’ said Troy, ‘It would have to be one or two of you girls,’
‘Thank you,’ said Cressida, ‘Send us on a mission of danger into the unknown,’
‘Well think what it would look like if one or two men were found hiding in a cupboard in a girl’s school,’ said Troy, reasonably.
‘Me and Lia’ll go, if you’re going to create a fuss, Cressida,’ said Cori, glancing at Lia, who nodded, ‘How are we to get out?’
‘Out of the window, of course,’ came the insouciant reply. Romeo laughed, a sound that startled them, ‘Sorry, it’s just that’s how I said you twins had got out that’s all. Carry on,’
Troy did as he was told, with the result that Cori and Lia were helped out of the window to the balcony and lowered down to the ground, where they disappeared round the corner towards the front door. A few minutes later there came a furtive tap at the door and Cori ‘s voice whispered ‘We’re just going into the cupboard now, see you soon,’.
Hours seemed to pass before there was another scuffling at the door. It took the form of the click of a key turning in the lock of the door. The key was then removed and the door opened.

Thank you Lulie, love this story.

So come on who is standing in the doorway? Is Matron in league with the baddies or just being careful? Or has she a hidden agenda of her own?

Thanks Lulie. It's getting very confusing. Poor Mollie and Madge, I think I'd run screaming if I were faced with this lot claiming to be descendants *g*

So is Matron in league with the bad guys? For that matter who are the bad guys? Will our heroes ever return to their own time?

Thanks for that Lulie - curious, why would Matey lock the door? Is she in league with the original abductors? She wasn't that fazed at what had happened - perhaps she wants all the Maynard and Bettany's together - if so we can expect to see Joey the child soon!

And why is Anna looking at them so poisonously?

#97:  Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 7:16 pm

devil devil devil Were your poor fingers sore from dangling off the cliff? I had provided sofas, drinks and nibbles for you and now I'm all upset that you ignored them Twisted Evil

In the doorway stood a young girl in a spotless print dress and apron, long blonde plaits hanging down to her waist and a pleasant expression on her face. ‘Anna!’ exclaimed Madge, ‘I’m glad you’re here. Have you seen Matron?’
‘I have, Madame,’ replied Anna, demurely, though the look in her blue eyes made Madge shiver. Anna seemed to notice this, and smiled even more. ‘Matron has requested that I….’ Anna stopped speaking, her eyes rolled up in her head and she crumpled into a heap on the floor, out cold. Behind her Lia lowered the old chair leg she was holding and grinned at them all. ‘Push her under the bed, or something, somebody. She’ll get in the way,’
Troy, muttering ‘I definitely went to the wrong school!’ obeyed, but not before Lia had retrieved the key from Anna’s nerveless hand. Suddenly Mollie Maynard jumped to her feet, ‘Follow me, all of you,’ she cried, much to the confusion of the others. Their replies fused into one bewildered ‘Uh?’
‘If Matron’s behind all this, we’ll have to go and confront her,’ explained Mollie, ‘There’s eleven of us. That’s more than a match for a Matron, even our Matron. Come on, move,’ She caught Romeo, who was nearest, by the waistband of his jeans (he was too tall to grab by the scruff of the neck) and pushed him out of the room. Romeo let out a squawk and literally jumped over the threshold, followed by the rest of his family in a rather more orderly manner. Cori and Lia had to be pushed along the corridor, fighting hysterical laughter, as they had been the only two to get the full widescreen version of the expression on Romeo’s face. Mollie brought up the rear, muttering ‘If you are my descendants I’m going to advise Jack and Bob against marrying. You’re all insane, I’m sure of it!’
However the arrival at Matron’s door sobered them all up and they gathered in a bunch outside. Mollie pushed her way to the front, took hold of the handle and opened the door. Matron swung round from the cupboard that she was in front of. Her lips thinned as she saw who it was. ‘So,’ she said, ‘I take it you managed to get past Anna, and have found out that it is I who is behind all this?’
‘We hadn’t actually, no, but thank you for telling us,’ said Mollie, coolly, ‘you could tell us why, as I believe that is the most immediate question right now,’

Thanks Lulie, are we to hear Matey's reason soon? Please?

#99:  Author: LulieLocation: Middlesbrough PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2004 9:03 pm

‘It certainly is,’ Grandma Jo had gathered her wits by this time, helped no doubt by a quick confab with Madge, Desda and Mac as they made their way through the corridors. Matron’s eyes flicked in Grandma’s direction and she clicked her tongue. ‘That was the drawback to my plan,’ she said, almost to herself, ‘But bringing Jo was unavoidable. Sadly I can’t send her back without sending the others also,’
‘Send me back!’ cried Grandma, her hearing unimpaired by age, ‘I should think not. I’m not going anywhere without my grandchildren. It’s bad enough that you, Matey, should turn out to be a…a… without you abducting my family at the same time.’
‘Do shut up, Joey,’ said Matron, patiently, ‘or you’ll certainly get more than you bargained for. Now, firstly, you three young men. How old are you?’
Mac, Romeo and Troy looked startled, but replied promptly.
‘Twenty six,’ replied Mac.
‘Nineteen,’ was Romeo’s response.
‘Seventeen,’ added Troy.
‘Hmmmmm, that could be a problem, unless…. I could break the rules, of course,’
‘Rules?’ asked Mac, sharply, ‘What rules?’
