September 1953

Joey sat at the breakfast table with Jack, the Freudesheim was silent. Cecil was in the nursery with Rösli, having yet to reach her third birthday meant she had to wait till April to join her parents for the first meal of the day. All the older children had left for the new term, even the two F’s as they were known, Felix and Felicity, twins who were closest in age to Cecil, being weekly boarders at St. Nicholas for this, the winter term.
“Isn’t it quiet, with only one child here?” Jo asked.
Jack nodded, silently thinking how pleased he was as the noise that rang through the house during holidays frequently caused him to lose his train of thought when attempting to do any work or read. Although he loved his children there were times when he wished they had an off switch, still as they were growing up they did lessen in volume, or at least went into the garden so the sound was dispersed.
“Don’t you miss having a baby around?”
Jack inwardly groaned, he should have sensed this one coming, after all they’d had this conversation several times in the past and each time he’d lost, well, not this time, he’d cut her off at the pass. “No more babies, Jo. Don’t you think we have enough children?”
“When we married you knew I wanted a large family!”
“When I proposed you didn’t want ANY, then it went to you didn’t want a baby to be an only child before it hit ‘big family’ and I thought you meant four or maybe five not ten!”
Jo decided to try a different tack, “This would be the last one, the family’s a bit, well ‘unbalanced’ at the moment, with five girls and four boys. Don’t you think we need another boy?”
“And what if we have another set of triplet girls? You’d then say we had to have another four boys. This obsession of yours to have things match is beyond belief”
“What obsession?” Jo cried indignantly, momentarily distracted from her quest.
“The way the curtains have to match, for one? They aren’t even in the same room. Len thought you’d be cured when we moved here with all the windows but no, you came back from seeing Steve and Charles onto the train with reams of material and had Anna make them all up that weekend, now your matching hats with outfits I can tolerate,” he held up his hand to stop her interrupting, “but your underwear always having to match as well? Who would know if you wear white knickers under a green dress? It’s even more strange as you are so disorganised with everything else, then obsess over little things. I’ve seen you spend two hours over your hair as you forgot how many hairpins you had in one earphone and couldn’t get the other to match, so started again!”
“Well even if it’s another girl this would be it. Ten’s a nice even number, don’t you think? Cecil could do with the company and…”
Jack swallowed the last of his coffee and stood up. “I said no, and that’s my final word on the subject.” With that he left for the San, leaving Jo with a curious look in her eye.

When Jack returned home that night he was pleased to note that Jo didn’t mention another child, feeling pleased with himself for winning the final argument they went to bed early.
“Jack,” Jo began in a wheedling voice.

THE END

Jack's a doctor. I'm sure he must know a way of ensuring no more babies (without even telling Joey if necessary...)

And I did giggle at the thought of Joey the Obsessive Compulsive!

Lovely Christmas drabble, thank you.
