I am writing to ask graciously for your daughter, Felicity’s, hand in marriage. As you know Felicity and I have been courting for some months now following her engagement with my dance company; we are performing Beauty and the Beast together during the pantomime season.
I don’t know what Felicity has told you about me in her letters so I will fill you in as well as I can; my name is Seb Jones, I am 27 and as you’ve probably gathered a dancer. I grew up largely in Paris where I trained as a Dancer; my mother and father are lecturers at the Sorbonne but my ancestry is British.
When I retire from dancing I intend to teach, perhaps with Felicity, I hope we will be given positions at the Royal Ballet school.
I look forward to meeting you soon, I hope you consider me a suitable match for your daughter.
Yours Sincerely
Sebastian Jones

ETA Don't think Jack will be too pleased at being addressed as Mr!

#8: Author: Jennie, Location: CambridgeshirePosted: Sun Jun 27, 2004 12:50 pm He sounds a bit pompous to me, 'To ask graciously' does he meant to 'ask for your gracious permission'?

#14: Author: Marianne, Location: LancasterPosted: Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:56 pm Jack smiled when he read the letter,
‘Jo! Jo!’ he called out of his study.
‘What darling?’ came Jo’s reply from the Salon.
‘I’ve a rather interesting letter!’
‘Oh! Hang on..’ said Jo, hurrying over to the study. Jack handed her the letter, predicting her reaction.
‘Mr! Doesn’t he mean Dr? Yes, well, of course we know he’s 27, I do talk to my daughter! Honestly, gosh Jack what are you going to do?’
‘Give him my permission of course!’
‘But don’t you want to meet him first?’
‘Yes, I suppose it would be nice, but we can’t expect him to come all the way here from Switzerland! Now Jo, be careful, don’t you go blabbing to Felicity, he obviously hasn’t proposed yet…’
‘Yes dear, of course,’
‘Good girl,’ replied Jack patronisingly.
‘oh – you!’
‘Get us a cuppa will you while I reply to this letter,’
‘Yes, yes,’ sighed Jo, kissing Jack.
‘Dear Sebastian
Thank you very much for your letter; it seems you don’t know much about us! I’ll have to berate Felicity. I’m a doctor here in Switzerland, second in command to Sir James Russell; we work largely to treat TB but thankfully the need has greatly decreased in recent years thus we have moved to treatment of childhood cancer.
I would be delighted to offer you Felicities hand in marriage, if you do love her and will look after her for the rest of your life.
Please accept my invitation to come to Switzerland with Felicity for Christmas, I know that we and all her siblings would love to meet you! Not to mention the nieces and nephews!
Regards
Dr John Maynard.
