#1: Dreaming? Author: Guest PostPosted: Mon Aug 30, 2004 5:06 pm

Hilda woke with a start. What had she been dreaming about? Oh yes, that ever creaking noise that followed her around the school. But this was the third night in a row she’d had this dream, what was wrong with her?
“Too much coffee!” Hilda grinned wryly to herself, vowing to cut down on her caffeine intake. She turned over, plumped her pillow up and went back to sleep.
Meanwhile, above her room, a silent figure crouched in the ventilation shaft, inanely grinning to itself.
“Soon Hilda, soon…”

Next morning Hilda woke and went downstairs for an early chat with her secretary, Rosalie. Apart from looking a little heavy about the eyes, Hilda looked fine. Rosalie had slept well and only just wakened herself, leaving the Head in some doubt as to whether she had waked during the night or if it was just part of a dream.

“Did you sleep well Hilda? You look a trifle tired.” Rosalie’s voice was tainted with concern.
“Just a dream that woke me my dear, that’s all”
“Well maybe you should have a nap later on, you do look worn out.”
“I may do. The girls aren’t expected until tomorrow and I think we’ve sorted out everything else for now haven’t we?” She carried on as Rosalie nodded her head in agreement. “In that case I think I will – the staff all have their plan of actions for today and there isn’t much for me to do until the Meeting this evening.” Left the topic as her stomach gave a loud rumble. With a raised eyebrow at Rosalie she suggested breakfast might be a good idea. Rosalie giggled and led the way to the speisesaal ready to stoke up for the day.

Later that day Hilda decided to pass on her nap and went across to see Joey at Freudesheim instead.
“Hilda! What a surprise! Come in, come in and I’ll get Anna to do her famous coffee for us!”
“Thank you Joey, that would be lovely” Hilda spoke with a smile.
Joey quickly noted the tired ring in Hilda’s usually bright voice, and the shadows beneath her eyes. Settling her guest in a comfy chair and handing her a cup of coffee and a thick patisserie filled with cream and chocolate, she set about finding the cause of her friend’s fatigue.
“Hilda, what’s bothering you? You’re tired and don’t look too well.”
Hilda sighed, knowing that Joey wouldn’t give up until she knew what was wrong.

It's a series of horror films (many of them, most of the sequels not as good as the original Very Happy) about a deformed man/monster called Freddy Krueger who kills people (usually adolescents) in their dreams.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087800/ gives an outline of the plot and if you click on show more recommendations near the bottom it'll give you links to the sequels.

I hate scary films which probably explains why I have no idea about Nightmare on Elm Street!

I too went to bed with a pair of eyes watching me from my ceiling and hearing a little voice saying "Soon Kat, soon..." Neutral HelpMe

A little more for you blood thirsty lot!

“I must confess I find it laughable that such a thing is bothering me.” Joey’s eye brows raised high into her forehead, but she kept quiet.
“For the past three nights I’ve been having the same dream. A creaking noise, which I hear all around me as I walk through the school. Sometimes it sounds as though it is above me, but when I look up it’s just the ceiling, or else it sounds as though it’s coming from a classroom to my side but when I go in, it’s empty. Other times it’s behind me, but again there’s nothing there when I turn to look. I feel as though there are eyes watching me, following me around the school.” Hilda gave a small laugh. “Silly isn’t it? The girls would laugh if they knew their Head Mistress was being a spineless jellyfish over a dream!”

Joey smiled nervously. “Everyone gets a little spooked by such things Hilda!” She paused before continuing gently “There’s no need to be ashamed of yourself – when we sleep, we are at out most vulnerable, it’s the time when our feelings fully come to light, form themselves into dreams and patterns, try to organise themselves, even if we don’t understand them. Our bodies need dreams to cope with all our memories, all the thoughts we have had during the day – it’s the way your body deals with all your emotions. Maybe you are being told to slow down a little – stop looking for problems that aren’t there, take a break!”
Hilda laughed. “Nonsense Joey, I don’t need a break! I’ve just spent a week away with Nell in Italy; it was lovely and very relaxing. I just need to cut down on the coffee before bedtime!”

Joey didn’t look convinced and vowed to herself to get to the bottom on Hilda’s sleeping problems…

Very intriguing - 'tw'ud be nice to know who guest is - but as long as
(s)he keeps writing........

I've never since the Nightmare films either, in fact I've actively avoided them - but I still remember a story I read when I was very young - a girl was having a bad nightmare (something to do with a creepy old house I think - I've managed to forget all the gory details) as she woke up she heard the words 'Beware the third nightmare'
Of course she soon had a second nightmare, and again heard the words beware the third nightmare. Of course, try as you might you can't avoid going to sleep, so naturally she did have a third nightmare. That really freaked me out at thhe time - in fact, come to think of it, it might explain my reluctance to go to bed at night!

************************************************

It was the early hours of the following morning when Hilda’s dreams again became troubled. She muttered in her sleep, tossing restlessly from side to side. Rosalie, on her way to the bathroom, was disturbed by the sounds coming from the bedroom and decided to investigate.
The figure in the shaft gave a start as the door was cautiously opened. Rosalie stepped quietly across the floor, not wishing to startle or scare her Head. She softly called Hilda’s name and gently rested a hand on her shoulder. Hilda moaned and involuntarily clutched her duvet tighter around her.

“Hilda? Hilda? Hilda!” Rosalie’s voice was slowly increasing in volume, and added with the gentle shaking of her, she began to rouse.
“Wha…?”
“Hilda! Wake up!”
“Rosalie?” The Head’s voice was foggy and confused.
“Yes Hilda, it’s me. Now will you please wake up and listen to me” Rosalie made her voice as urgent sounding as possible and Hilda quickly responded to it.
“What is it, my dear? Is someone ill?”
“Yes! You!”
“My dear, what do you mean?”
“You were having a nightmare of some sort.” She stated briefly.
“Ah yes, I remember – I’ve had it before.” In her still sleepy state, Hilda’s guard was down and she was soon telling Rosalie all about that noise, that creaking, scraping noise that seemed to get inside your head until you wanted to scream and rip apart the walls to find it and stop it.
Rosalie looked terribly concerned and after soothing Hilda for some minutes and making her sip some hot milk, she disappeared to find Matey.

“I think she needs a good break – she’s over working herself! Even with me, she doesn’t finish work until gone 10 every night and that’s a very long day when she starts at 7! It can’t be done Gwynedd” Rosalie ended with a shake of pretty head.
Gwynedd looked concerned. “And you say she’s been having these dreams for the past 4 nights, including tonight? Hmm,” as Rosalie nodded her head, “I think you could be right. I’ll ask Dr Jack to give her a thorough overhaul first thing in the morning. Mean time, would you mind staying with her for the rest of the night? Little Marie Griffiths is having tummy trouble and I don’t want to leave her for long on her own in San.”
“Of course not. I’ll pull the camp bed out and curl up on that.”
With a curt nod, Gwynedd turned and left the room, happier knowing her friend would have company should she waken again.

The Figure crept backwards through the shaft; silent in body, screaming in mind…

“Jack? That you?” Matey was on the phone early next morning, eager to catch Jack before he disappeared to the San for the day.
“Yes, it’s me – that you Gwynedd?”
“Yes. Look here Jack, could you come over and see Hilda right away?”
“Hilda? Why, what’s wrong with her?”
“She’s been having nightmares for the past four nights. Rosalie thinks she’s over working herself and needs a break, and quite frankly I’m inclined to agree. However, that might not be the problem and I want to find out what is if that’s the case!”
“Very well. I’ll be over in half an hour, see you then!”
Jack hung up and Matey was left to put the phone down and seek out Rosalie and Hilda before Hilda could get to her office – she was not going to be working today, of that she was certain.

“Hilda! You are not to go in to that office today! You will stay here and take things easy – read a book, do some of that embroidery you’ve had on the go for the last six and a half years or else go for a walk, but go into that office you will not! Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes Gwynedd, perfectly clear. There is no need to shout, I am perfectly capable of hearing you from here with out you having to raise your voice.”

Rosalie nearly spluttered at this, but held it back at the last moment – with both the Head and Matey at their stateliest she couldn’t afford to give them any chance at attacking her. “Leaving my jugular open to them would not be a good idea” she thought with an inward grin.

Above them, hiding in the narrow space between ceiling and floor, the Figure lay still, listening intently to the conversation going on below. It twitched slightly as Hilda spoke.
“…in that case I shall go for a walk – first to see Miss Ferrars to ask about her Aunt and then to St Cecilie.”
“That’s fine. Please wait for Jack to see you first though – he is on his way here.”
“Very well, I shall be waiting in my own sitting room.”

The Figure crept slowly forwards, following Hilda’s movement above her, from her bedroom to her sitting room. Voices seeped through to It; Rosalie and Matey talking before both going downstairs, Rosalie to her office and Matey to the front entrance to look for Jack Maynard.

Hilda sat down with a sigh, really Gwynedd had no respect for her as a Head Mistress – she was her Boss after all! She picked up a book and tried to concentrate on ‘Maggie’s’ behaviour towards ‘Georgey’. A creaking noise above her attracted her attention… it was that same noise! The one she heard in her dreams….

I don't think computers know the difference - a dictionary is a dictionary isn't it? You can spell it both ways though.

Gem, in this drabble Kathie's aunt has been unwell - not sure if the PB's will allow us to hear more, have to wait and see Smile

Not much sorry..

“Well Hilda, there is nothing physically wrong with you. However, you do seem rather rundown. Now, I know that the start of term is only a few days away, but I must insist that you take time off – and I don’t mean just a few days. You need to get away for at least a month.” Jack Maynard held up a hand to stop Hilda from interrupting. “I know you love your job, but it still carries a lot of responsibilities, responsibilities which you haven’t been fully free from for at least 15 years! You need a break, ok? That’s a medical order Hilda.”

Hilda sighed deeply and knew it was of no use to argue. She took herself of to the Staff garden, intent on enjoying the sun before she was shipped off to goodness knows where. As she walked through the school corridors, she thought she could faintly here the creaking noise above her. She set her jaw, determined not to look up. “This is wonderful! Jack will think I’m going mad if I say I can hear it waking as well as sleeping! Maybe they are right and I do need a break” She let herself out the side door and made her way to the rose garden, the hunting ground sacred to the staff only.

“Kathie! My dear girl, how are you?” Hilda spoke with deep concern in her voice. Kathie was a very able member of her staff, and a good friend to all, including herself. Her grief had been apparent when she had returned to the school the day before and Hilda was concerned about her.
“Hello, Hilda” Kathie tried to speak lightly, but it was a struggle.
“How are you?” Hilda repeated her question gently.
“I’m ok” Hilda forbore to correct the slang for once.
“How is your aunt?”
“She, she’s getting there. The shock was so great, it’s upset her badly. She wanted me to come back though, and uncle did too – auntie said my letters have always made her smile, and this way she could look forward to hearing all my news.”

The standard holiday at the CS seems to be either staying with Winifred Embury in Montreux, or in more serious cases being dragged off to the south of france by Evvy. Is Hilda ill enough to merit the South of France? Surely it would be easier for this Figure to follow her to Montreux though.

Or will she merely be condemned to a few weeks at Freudsesheim?
