This is only going to be a mini drabblette... (repeats to self firmly!)
Oops, I just noticed that there's another drabble called "The Decision" - hope this doesn't get too confusing. I'm sorry Nicole - didn't mean to steal your title!

“Morning, old thing!” Nell Wilson’s voice greeted Hilda Annersley from the French windows to the Chalet School Headmistress’s private salon. “Any chance of coffee?”

“Nell! My dear, you’re just the person I wanted to see,” her friend rose from her correspondence with a smile of welcome. “Of course you can have coffee – come in. I’ll call the maid,” and she matched action to words by ringing the bell by the door, before waving her Co-Head to an armchair. “But what brings you here at this hour? I wasn’t expecting you until midday.”

Nell returned the smile. “Oh, I got up with the sun this morning. Didn’t see any reason to hang around my office more than necessary when I could be enjoying your company. I’m not disturbing you from work, am I?”

“Not really, most of this can wait. In fact, I was going to call you,” Hilda regarded her friend pensively, “but decided to wait until Mittagessen. However, seeing that you’re here now -”

“Well?” Nell Wilson settled into her chair and looked at her friend expectantly, “What is it, Hilda? Is Joey having quads at last? Or are we accepting fifty new girls next term from another burnt-out school?”

The Headmistress laughed. “Nothing so dramatic! I do have some news for you, though – or rather, a question,” she amended, “I’ve had a letter, and I’d like your opinion, Nell,” the Head extended the letter to her colleague, and watched impassively as the other woman scanned it. “What do you think - should I accept this unexpected offer?”

I think so too. Unless it's Hilda's secret lover inviting her to elope...

More, please!

Well done, Fio! (None of you seriously expected me to write a Hilda & Nell drabble, did you? Rolling Eyes )

As Nell read the letter, her expression underwent a rapid series of transformations through surprise, satisfaction, a suppressed sign of consternation and finally frank curiosity. She lowered the sheaf of paper and sat back in her armchair, regarding her colleague with interest.

“Well! It’s an honour, no doubt about it.”

“It is,” the Head assented. “It’s not every day one gets offered a free tour of Europe – and with the opportunity to visit some of her best schools. There’s no doubt it would be an interesting experience.”

“And what you’d learn, you could put into practice once you returned,” Nell said, musing aloud. “Had you heard about the Commission before this?”

“A little. You remember the Hutjes Report on Education that came out almost five years ago? The people who organised that tour of inspection have decided to run another one, which is what I’ve been invited to join.” Hilda smiled slightly. “The Hutjes Report caused something of a stir, if you recall, so I think we can assume that this Commission will be quite innovative.”

Nell nodded, perusing the letter one more time. Then she eyed her partner and spoke bluntly, “Well, do you want to do it, Hilda? For if you do then the School will just have to manage somehow. Do you know, my dear, that most private schools offer sabbaticals these days? Yet you haven’t taken a week off since you succeeded Mlle Lepattre!”

“Well, except for a year at Plas Howell -”

“Oh, for goodness’ sake! Recuperating from a nearly fatal crash can’t possibly be considered time off!” Only someone who knew Nell Wilson well as Hilda Annersley did would have heard the feeling behind the former’s apparent brusqueness as she said this. The days when it had been feared that her companion would not survive had been some of the darkest she could remember. “And if anyone’s earned an invitation to participate in this Commission, I should think you have.”

“Thank you,” the Headmistress received the compliment quietly. “Nell, I must admit that I’d like to accept, and I’m glad I have your support.” She paused for a moment, observing her partner’s reaction.

“My unqualified support,” it was Miss Wilson, Head of St. Mildred’s, speaking rather formally at this point. Then Nell again, with just a hint of dismay, “But you do know just how much we’ll miss you if you go, don’t you?”

Hilda gave a slight smile, “If it’s half as much as I will miss the Oberland, the School, and you – then a great deal!”

The two women exchanged glances for a moment. Then Nell spoke soberly, “All the same, Hilda, though we’ll make do without you, it won’t be easy. You know that old Mrs Norton died last week?”

Her friend nodded, “I’m very sorry for the family,” the beautiful voice was grave. “Yet you said it was something of a merciful release for Mrs Norton herself?”

“It was. She had suffered badly.” Nell was silent for a moment. “But you know what it means for us, don’t you? We’ll be without one of our key staff members at St Mildred’s next term - there’s no way I can take over here, though I’ll help as much as I can.”

“I know,” Miss Annersley had already considered this. “Nell, as I said, I would like to accept the Commission’s invitation. But I won’t until I know that my replacement has the full confidence of the School, and especially the Staff.” She leant forward in her chair, watching her partner keenly, “Tell me, my dear - who would you choose for the post?”

Unfortunately you now know the context so I can't do very big cliffs, however I still find the thought process of various characters intriguing, so... hope you will bear with me! Laughing

There was a long pause as Nell Wilson cogitated. Then,

“Well, it would have to be an insider.” She looked at her friend with one eyebrow raised, “After the debacle with Miss Bubb, I don’t think we could feel happy with someone unknown at such short notice – and the School is far bigger now.”

“I agree,” Hilda nodded. “The circumstances that year were quite different. You, Jeanne and Dollie Edwards were all out of commission as well, and Madge had Ailie on the way.”

“Hmm. Well, who are the senior members of staff? Jeanne de Lachenais and Ruth Derwent are the oldest, of course,” Nell continued, “but I’d be surprised if Jeanne would accept the job, even if you offered it to her. She’s a good teacher and a peaceable influence in the Staffroom,” her eyes danced as she recalled a recent squabble between the younger members of staff which that lady had smoothed over, “but she’s never been one to seek the lime light.”

“Quite – though I’m not sure I’d put it quite like that!” Miss Annersley said plaintively.

“Oh, you know what I mean!” Nell dismissed this interruption with impatience. “You have to have a certain oomph to lead four hundred girls plus Staff!”

Hilda laughed. “All right, Nell, I do understand. Well then, if not Jeanne, how about Ruth?”

Nell mused. “She probably could do the job. She’d cope with the organisational work, and the Staff would back her up. It’s a possibility. All the same -”

“Yes?” Hilda prompted.

“Well, it’s like with Jeanne. She’s been settled in her current position for years, and I’ve only heard good things about her teaching, but I’ve never seen her take responsibility without being asked. Yet that’s exactly what one does need in a Headmistress – someone who’ll take the initiative instinctively,” Nell had put her finger on the point. “No, I’d rather have someone younger with a natural sense of authority, any day, than someone older without.” She looked across at her friend. “As far as I can see, Hilda, there are only two choices: Rosalind – or Nancy.”

Ah, how I've missed the sweet sound of chanting - music to my ears Smile

The Headmistress of the Chalet School smiled at her colleague. “I’m glad you’ve come to that conclusion, Nell. I agree with you – as far as I’m concerned, those are the only two candidates for the job.”

Nell regarded her shrewdly. “But you’ve fixed on one, haven’t you, in your own mind? Who is it, Hilda? For me, there’s little to choose between the pair.”

Hilda nodded, “Both of them are extremely capable women; Rosalind has run the Geography Department excellently, likewise Nancy the Maths Department for several years. In terms of their teaching and managerial skills, I feel that there’s little to distinguish between them, except” she added with a twinkle in her eyes, “that I admire Nancy’s ability to inspire her pupils somewhat more than Rosalind’s – I could certainly not do it in mathematics!”

Nell Wilson laughed out loud at this, “You could teach any subject under the sun, my dear, your pupils would always pay attention.” Her face assumed a very innocent expression, “You would just need to study a little beforehand. Any time you want a session in algebra, just let me know - I’ll be more than happy to oblige!”

“With pleasure, Nell,” the retort came swiftly, “as long as you come to me for a class on Dickens!”

Both women chuckled at this conclusion to their exchange.

“So if it’s not teaching or organising, what’s the difference?” inquired Nell at length.

The Headmistress hesitated for just a split second, as though weighing up some decision. Then, with a slight smile to herself, she replied, “Well, Nell, there is one advantage that Nancy has over Rosalind.”

“Hmm,” Nell sat back and regarded her partner consideringly. “Well, she’s an Old Girl of the school and knows our traditions as well as anyone. But you’re not proposing to discriminate against Rosalind on those grounds, surely?”

Hilda shook her head, “Of course not. Rosalind has worked here for years - and after all neither you nor I were Old Girls before we started here, yet we seem to have fitted in reasonably well!”

“No, I didn’t think that was it, though Nancy’s status as an Old Girl might carry weight in other quarters,” Nell concurred. “Well, you’re going to have to tell me, Hilda, for – oh!” and she shifted slightly, looking suddenly uncomfortable.

“Yes?”

“I – well – Rosalind does have rather a reputation for her biting tongue!”

“Like someone else I could mention, who is an excellent Headmistress,” Hilda said with amusement in her tones. “No, Nell, it’s not that. But Nancy has something very important – something that I have had from the beginning, and that Rosalind doesn’t have yet. Can’t you guess?” She smiled at her friend’s blank look, “My dear, in Kathie Ferrars she has a colleague on whom she can always rely for good advice, who will be an unfailing loyal ally and who will be a source of strength in the darkest moments.”

Nell flushed to the roots of her hair. “Hilda -”

“I mean it,” the Headmistress said softly, “I wouldn’t have lasted a term in this post without your help, Nell.” She smiled at her friend before continuing, “And if Kathie is half as good a friend for Nancy as you have been for me, then I have complete confidence in leaving the School in Nancy's hands.”

There was a moment’s silence, then –

“Thank you, Hilda,” Nell’s voice was unusually quiet. “I'll support Nancy any way I can, for the School’s sake – and yours.”

“Good afternoon and welcome!” Hilary Graves greeted her former Headmistress at Aldersnest, the big chalet she shared with Biddy Courvoisier and family. “Come on in and make yourself comfortable, Hilda – you don’t have a coat, do you? Nancy and Kathie are in the Salon,” she ushered her guest through the pretty entrance hall, “and we’re all dying to hear your news. You were most mysterious over the ‘phone!”

“What a welcome!” Miss Annersley followed her hostess in, “Very well, I shall satisfy your curiosity shortly.” She entered the Salon behind Hilary, to receive a rapturous welcome from two women – one tall, fair and very jolly, the other younger, much shorter with dark hair and lively brown eyes.

“Hilda! How lovely to see you,” the first woman, Nancy Wilmot, jumped up to greet her, beaming broadly. “We only returned to the Platz yesterday, you know – weren’t expecting to be honoured with a visit quite so soon. Have you been enjoying the summer?”

“Very much, thank you,” Hilda returned her embrace warmly, “Nell and I spent a fortnight in the south of France at the beginning of July, following which we returned to Switzerland to enjoy the tranquillity of a schoolgirl-free Platz.”

Her listeners laughed. “It does feel quite different out of term, doesn’t it?” Kathie Ferrars chuckled. “I’m glad to return before the girls, for once.”

“Indeed. And where have you two been? Hilary I know has stayed on the Platz this summer.”

“In Andalucia for the last month, cycling from Granada to Cordoba,” Nancy said happily. “And before that I was with Ida Reavley – sorry, Whitfield – for a week, and Kathie was with her folks in the Cotswolds.”

Miss Annersley smiled at that young woman, “I’m sure they were delighted to have you back.”

“They were,” but Kathie’s expression clouded slightly, causing the Head a moment of wonder.

“Never mind all that, Hilda,” Hilary turned the conversation, “Sit down and tell us what this visit’s about – it’s clear you’ve got something up your sleeve.”

Miss Annersley acquiesced, “Oh, I can see I’ll have no peace until I’ve told you. Very well,” she settled back into one of the Graves’ comfortable armchairs, and waited till the other three were ready to listen. Then she turned to the Head of Mathematics, and addressed her in somewhat more serious tones, “It’s really you that I’ve come to see, Nancy, though I’m glad Kathie and Hilary are here as well.”

Nancy looked surprised, “Me? What for?”

“I’ve been invited away for a tour of Europe next term, with a very distinguished commission of educational inspection,” Hilda paused to let this sink in. “Nancy, I’d like to accept, but someone will have to take my place at the School." There was another, longer pause, during which Hilary at least put two and two together correctly, though Nancy continued to look blank. Hilda smiled at her before continuing, "I have discussed this with Nell and Madge, and they agree with me: you are the best candidate. Nancy, my dear - would you accept the post of Head for a term?"

I think Kathy will back Nancy up admirably.

Waiting to here Nancy's reaction

Thanks for the flowers & chocs, Chickpea & Mora - glad you enjoyed Alt Rom! (Hope you managed to find the ending OK though - it doesn't seem to be on the Sally Denny website yet but it's all in the archives). PatMac - please feel free to think of Alt Rom when reading this drabble - the two should definitely be consistent Laughing

Nancy choked audibly at this question. “I – would I – what?” she stared at Miss Annersley, “Hilda, could you say that again? I don’t think I heard quite correctly!”

The Headmistress’s blue-grey eyes danced, but she repeated her question steadily, “Would you accept the post of Head so that I can leave the School for a term and travel with the commission?”

“But – but -” Nancy seemed completely taken aback, “Hilda, why me?”

“Because you are the best qualified for the post,” the Head replied calmly. “You have run your department admirably for years, and you command respect from both girls and Staff. I am not saying you would find the job easy,” the corners of her mouth twitched, “I personally find it challenging even after twenty years. But I believe you could do it, and do it well.”

Nancy felt as though the three pairs of eyes turned in her direction were boring holes right through her. “Oh, stop staring at me, for goodness’ sake, all of you!” she exclaimed in dismay. “Hilda, I don’t know what to say – I appreciate that the offer is an honour but – but it’s completely unexpected – I can’t think why on earth you’re asking me to do it -”

Hilary Graves, who was watching this scene with considerable interest, gave vent to a low chuckle. “Well, this takes me back a few years,” she remarked, with an impish glance at Miss Annersley. “I remember a certain seventeen year-old being rendered equally speechless when she was made Head Girl. I didn’t know it would have the same effect for a grown woman though!”

“Quite!” Nancy was on this comment like a knife. “And who was being made Head Girl, if you please? Not me, thank you very much! Hilda,” she turned an earnest gaze on the Headmistress, “there must be someone better suited for the post than me. I’m just a common-or-garden Head of Maths, and that barely involves any managing – well, Kathie for intermediate maths and Joan and Linda for juniors, but that’s hardly any work, they’re excellent teachers and completely reliable – I’ve truly never aspired to take anyone else’s job – I’d make a complete hash of it -” Her voice, which had risen several tones, stopped abruptly as a soothing hand was placed on her shoulder.

“Nance – take a deep breath,” Kathie said gently. “No one’s asking you to make a decision right this moment – you’re not, are you, Hilda?” she glanced at that lady, who shook her head. “My dear, why don’t you let Hilda tell you more about the job, and why she thinks you could do it? And then she’ll give you some time to think it over, I’m sure, if you want...”

WOW, Catherine - this is fabulous.

Now where's the explanation as to why Kathie's face clouded over? I'm presuming it's going to come out in Nancy and Kathie's tete-a-tete or at least when Hilary pounces on her for it!

Please write more soon Catherine, I want to see how Nancy is persuaded that she can do the job, and find out why Kathie's face clouded over.
And I love seeing the background behind some of the things we're simply told in the book.

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone Embarassed. Afraid there won't be any more till tomorrow - for some bizarre reason I couldn't get to sleep yesterday until 4am, had one of those nights when you toss and turn and think of all the things you haven't done and start panicking about life being so short! - consequently am all sleepy and am going to get an early night. Will try and dream a few more scenes for you tonight!

Hilda cast a quick glance at the geography mistress, “Thank you, Kathie. You’re quite right, I don’t need a decision immediately.” She turned to the Head of Maths, who was looking rather subdued, and spoke gently. “Nancy, forgive me. I’d forgotten what a shock it was when Madame asked me to take the post, even though it shouldn’t have been entirely unexpected, then.”

“It must have been much worse for you, taking the job because of Mlle Lepattre’s illness,” Nancy’s face grew sober. “At least it’s good news which has occasioned this offer, Hilda, and I am thankful for that. Even though I can’t exactly welcome it,” she added honestly.

The two women exchanged glances.

“This commission is an exciting opportunity for me,” the Head said slowly. “At the Chalet School, one of my roles is helping other mistresses to develop their own skills. Now, part of that I can do through my personal experience in the classroom; I have my own ideas about teaching - how to attract and hold the girls’ attention, how to introduce them to new ideas, how to manage classroom discussion, and so on.” She paused to check that her listeners were with her; seeing that all three were following closely, continued. “Another part comes from the individual mistress herself. Each has her own style of teaching. For example, Nell and I have completely different methods in the classroom; we both manage to be effective in our own ways, but I sincerely doubt that we could copy one another’s approaches.”

Hilary and Kathie chuckled beneath their breath at the thought of quick-tempered Nell Wilson adopting the Head’s calm demeanour. Nancy was too interested in what Hilda was saying to join in, however, for she had thought about the subject frequently regarding her own department.

“It’s a difficult balance, isn’t it? I’ve always had what I call a ‘peaceful’ approach in the classroom, myself. Pupils can be put off maths so easily by impatient teachers, and it’s just not necessary, I’ve always made it my aim to be the opposite – calm and reassuring,” she smiled slightly, “unless of course the little dears are deliberately playing up.”

The other three laughed. Nancy was indeed a placid creature as a rule, but she had been known to deliver lectures that even Nell Wilson couldn’t have bettered.

“But Kathie has a completely different approach – and so does Linda – and they both seem to work,” Nancy continued earnestly. “Kathie’s much sparkier in the classroom, it’s as though she’s on stage, she really enjoys entertaining a class,” she smiled at her partner, with whom she had frequently discussed the subject, “And Linda goes for jolly and down-to-earth. Some of that is due to the age groups that we’re teaching, of course, but much of it is individual personality. So it’s a real challenge for me to help them with their own work, whilst recognising that their styles are quite different from mine.”

Miss Annersley nodded with a smile. “Exactly. But even beyond that - and this is where it links in with the Commission – there are the techniques which none of us at the Chalet School use, yet, because we haven’t seen them in our own environment, or had the imagination to invent them ourselves. That’s what I’m personally looking forward to most on this tour of inspection: the opportunity to learn new methods of teaching from some of the best instructors in Europe.”

Nancy, who had been leaning forward in her chair, gave a sudden sigh. “Oh, all right – I can see that you’d find the tour jolly interesting. And I admit that that part of being Head does sound rather fun,” she added, as Hilary and Kathie were opening their mouths to comment, “Not that I can see myself doing much in just a term – but I suppose I could support people making progress for themselves, at least.”

The Head eyed her thoughtfully, “I think you’d do that very well.”

There was a pause.

“Well, you might as well continue,” said Nancy at length. “I’ve conceded something, at least, for which you should be grateful! But I think you’d better tell me the rest, Hilda.” And she sat back in her chair to listen, with a somewhat cautious expression on her face.

“So. What do you think?” Nancy asked, staring ahead along the Platz where she and Kathie were walking. Miss Annersley had left Aldersnest after a further hour’s conversation, and Hilary had disappeared off to the nursery to attend to her children, giving the two women a chance to discuss the day’s unexpected proposal.

Kathie glanced up at her, “Actually, I don’t think you want to know my opinion, yet.”

Nancy gave a short laugh, “Why do you say that?” she turned to regard her partner.

“Because this is your decision to take, not mine,” the younger woman said thoughtfully. “It affects me, but not so much that I’m going to try to steer you one way or the other, Nance.” She scanned her companion’s face, “It’s not an easy choice for you, is it?”

“No,” Nancy shook her head. “Do you mind if we keep walking?” She resumed her slow tread along the footpath, her face troubled. “Kathie, I just don’t know what to think. I came back from the holidays looking forward to a nice, quiet term. And suddenly I’ve been faced with the biggest possible responsibility at school, with less than a month to get used to the idea! It’s just such a - a shock.”

Kathie shot her a sympathetic look, “Oh, Nance.” She kept pace with her partner, considering the matter deeply. “Do you think you could do the job?”

“Yes.” There was only the barest hesitation, “Yes, I think I could. But I’m not sure that I could do it well enough.” Nancy bit her lip uneasily, “Hilda has led the School since before I joined as a schoolgirl, even - the position is so very much hers. Imagine everyone missing her calm leadership and wishing they didn’t have to make do with a substitute.”

The two women continued in silence for some way, Nancy preoccupied with these doubts. After several minutes had passed, feeling a comforting hand slip through her arm, she began to relax. “Sorry, Kathie.”

“No need to be,” the reply was soft.

The taller woman sent her friend a faint smile, “It’s not fair that you should be burdened with this, too.”

“Oh, Nance!” Kathie pulled her partner round and regarded her directly. “Don’t you know that I’m here for you, whatever you’re going through?” Her eyes traced the taller woman’s face, “Sweetheart, you’ve helped me time and again at school. If I can return the favour now, even if it’s just by listening, it’s the least I can do.”

The shadow on Nancy’s face began to lift. “Sorry,” she said again. “You’re right. I’m being an idiot.”

“No, you are not!” Kathie began to laugh quietly. “Nancy Wilmot, you’ve just been asked to take on a huge job, it’s not surprising you’re feeling rather shell-shocked.” She gazed up at her companion with a mixture of amusement and sympathy, “My love, do you think could you possibly not apologise for that?”

Nancy stared at her for a moment, before joining in reluctantly with the laughter. “Oh, Kathie,” she gazed down at her partner with gentle gratitude. “How ever would I cope without you, my dear?”

The two women smiled at one another affectionately. Then Kathie nodded,

“I think we may have to get used to this, Nancy.”

“To what?” her partner looked puzzled.

“To your getting offers like this,” Kathie said thoughtfully. She looked up at her companion, “I don’t mean that you should go looking for them if you don’t want to. But you’ve been Head of Department for several years now – and Housemistress as well – and Hilda is right; you do have a certain instinctive authority. It’s not surprising to me, at least, that she thinks you can handle more responsibility.”

Nancy flushed slightly, “Thanks for the flowers. It’s been a surprise for me!”

Her friend smiled slightly, but her eyes remained serious. “Nance, I wouldn’t want to push you towards anything you don’t feel ready for. But – but -” she searched for the right words to express herself, “I wouldn’t want to hold you back, either.”

“Hold me back?” Nancy repeated, regarding her partner quizzically. “Why, what do you mean?”

“Well.” Kathie paused. “Nance, you’re further on in your career than I am. In some ways I think the difference in our ages helps – it means we’re not competing for positions, for one thing,” she smiled at her friend, “also that you give me a lot of professional advice, and I appreciate that.”

The taller woman returned the look tenderly, “Don’t try to tell me the support goes just one way, for I won’t accept that for a moment!”

“No,” Kathie shook her head, “I think I do help you, but in a different way. You have come to collect responsibilities, my dear, whether you like it or not. People turn to you instinctively when things go wrong at school – both girls and Staff. So my support is mostly helping you keep your feet on the ground, and not get wrapped up in the cares and concerns of state.”

Nancy remained unconvinced. “Well, even if what you say is true – and I’m not myself sure that I’m at the centre of things more than any other Housemistress, say – how would your helping me keep things in perspective hold me back?”

A flicker of concern passed across Kathie’s face, “Because maybe there are some concerns that you’re ready to accept.” She searched her partner’s countenance for a reaction, “I know that I’m good at keeping you young, my love. But perhaps I’m too good.”

There was a long pause as Nancy digested this, then to Kathie’s private relief her friend’s eyes began to twinkle.

“So… do you think I might be excused from lacrosse if I were Head?” Nancy’s voice was very innocent.

“Ass! You know that’s not what I meant!” The younger woman gave her partner a reproving shove, “And no, even if you become Head permanently, you’re coming to play lax. I have to keep you fit somehow!”

The two friends giggled like schoolgirls for a moment. Then Kathie grew serious once more, “But Nancy – forgive me for putting this so bluntly – but – but - had it never occurred to you that you might be a candidate to succeed Hilda when she retired?”

There was another silence, and Nancy turned away from her partner slightly to gaze across at the Jungfrau, which was disappearing into the evening twilight.

“No,” she said at last, and her voice was rather sad. “No, Kathie. I never imagined myself as Head at the Chalet.”

Sorry - only a short bit - finding this hard to write Crying or Very sad

Kathie Ferrars waited for some time while her lover stared out across the mountains. Finally she summoned her voice tentatively, “Nancy?”

“Mmm,” it was a much quieter woman who turned back towards her. “Sorry - I – just -” Nancy seemed lost in thought, “You asked -”

“I asked whether you’d never considered yourself as Head,” the younger woman said softly.

“I hadn’t,” Nancy looked down at her partner, “Kathie, we’ve talked before about leaving the Chalet School. I know we’ve never felt it was the right moment – we both love it so much here – but somewhere, deep down, I’ve always believed that we’d go eventually.” Her expression was resolute, “I want us to have a home together. Being Head has never been part of that dream.”

Kathie took the hand proffered to her, “You’re a very down-to-earth dreamer, my love.” Her voice was very gentle.

“I wasn’t always,” Nancy said quietly. “I thought, once, that people who knew us well would accept us,” her voice shook slightly, “Do you know – when Hilda asked me to take over for the term, my first thought was ‘Father will be so pleased!’”

Kathie’s brown eyes glistened compassionately, “Oh, my darling -”

“He always wanted me to be more ambitious,” Nancy said, her voice cracking, “Oh, Kathie,” she began to sob in earnest as her partner pulled her into a tight embrace. “It’s too late – it’s too late, now.”

This is very EBD in a not a all EBDish way. (OK, so I know what i mean, even if the rest of you don't). I wonder, if EBD had lived, would she have retired Hilda after a few more years and moved Nancy in? In some ways it looks like it- but somehow I can't see it....but in drabbleland, Nancy is always seen as Hilda's successor. CGGU too, for what it's worth! Laughing

Yet in this reality Nancy and Kathie leave the Chalet School.Although I suppose there is always the possibility of them returning should Hilda retire, I can't see it - they would be living together in London - they'd not be able to do so at the CS.

Catherine - this is wonderful - thank you!

I think there's just one more post to come after this one *sighs*

Kathie held her partner closely for several minutes, letting the elder woman weep away her sorrow. It was less than half a year since Nancy had heard of her father’s death, and the fact that her family had only broken the news after the funeral was still a deep source of pain. Nancy had been close to her father until the Wilmots had broken off contact two years ago.

“Most darling, most beloved,” Kathie stroked her friend’s hair, murmuring love words and reassurances though she knew that no words could truly ease this pain. “There’s still hope with the rest of your family, honestly there is. We’ll keep writing, they’ll be proud of you yet, I promise,” and she clasped her companion very securely, “who knows, maybe it’ll even be with this very piece of news. We’ll do it somehow, Nance.”

“D-doubt it!” Nancy choked through her sobs, “The l-last letter I wrote they s-s-sent back unopened.”

“Oh, sweetheart!” Kathie squeezed her partner very tightly, then mopped at Nancy’s tear-streaked face with the sleeve of her blouse, “Please, please, never give up hope. Without it we have nothing.” Her voice, though quiet, was insistent, “So your mother won’t read your letters? Then we’ll try your brothers, one by one. And then we’ll try their friends. They can’t all shut you out, Nance, not forever.”

“N-no,” Nancy dashed at her tears, making a valiant effort to pull herself together, “I – I s’pose you’re right.”

“I know I am,” the younger woman spoke simply and with conviction. “They miss you now, Nancy – they couldn’t not miss a daughter, a sister or a friend as dear as you. That’s why we’ll win them round eventually. Even if it takes us years.”

Nancy gave a tiny, very shaky laugh, “I don’t know why you even want me to keep trying. Look how they’ve treated you!”

“Because before they knew me, they made you the person you are,” Kathie said steadily, “Isn’t that reason enough for me to be grateful to them?” She regarded her partner trustingly, “And I know that you love them, Nancy. They must be good people.”

The elder woman gave a half nod of assent.

Kathie took her hand, “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s make our way back to Aldersnest. We can think about things – business things – as we go.”

Poor Nancy, it is so unfair that her family should have made things so hard for her, but I'm glad that she and Kathie can be so supportive to one another.
I do want to see the next part, but I'm sorry it will be the last, unless you have any other Nancy/Kathie stories in the pipeline?

#131:  Author: Rachael PostPosted: Thu Apr 08, 2004 9:24 pm

Marvellous!

Kathie is a quite wonderfully supportive partner in all this - so patient and determined. I'd be spitting blood and going round to harangue Nancy's family ... or write them off - whichever
(bur then, subtlety is not my forte!)

More please - I have every confidence that even if this is the last post on this drabble, the small sparkling purple leaf will soon make his presence felt again! Very Happy

Catherine, I know I keep repeating myself, but this is wonderful! Does the next post have to be the last? Couldn't you continue to write about all that happened in Challenge but from Nancy and Kathie's POV?

Pretty, pretty please????? Laughing (Smiles winningly!)

Ooh, now there's a good idea ...

*promptly waving hand in air*
Seconded!!

Very Happy

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone. It's probably only fair to tell you that I entitled this document "Alternative Challenge" on my computer even before I posted the first instalment! However, I have a lot of work coming up this month, and (after thinking about it for a few days - hence the delay on this post) don't feel it's fair to plunge in to the rest of the story now. But Nancy and Kathie will be back. That's a promise. Kiss

The lights were twinkling at Aldersnest by the time the two wanderers returned. Biddy Courvoisier caught sight of the pair coming up the little path to the chalet, and leant out of her kitchen window in the upper half of the house to wave at them.

“Evening and welcome! You’ll be joining us for dinner, won’t ye? Hilary and Phil are up here already, and there’s plenty room for two more,” the lilting Irish tones were at their warmest.

Kathie smiled up at her old colleague, “No need to persuade us. We’ll come straight up.”

“Excellent! The door’s open, so let yourselves in,” Biddy gave her guests a cheery smile and withdrew her dark head into the room.

The two women made their way slowly up the wooden stairs at the side of the chalet.

“Are you going to tell them, Nance?” Kathie shot her partner a glance as they drew near the upper door, “Or would you rather not be a public figure just yet?”

Catching her companion's look of concern, Nancy reached for her hand and gave it a little squeeze, “I’ll be fine. But thanks for asking.” Her voice was back to its usual steady tones.

Kathie nodded slightly, then leant over suddenly to brush Nancy’s cheek with a light kiss, “Good luck, my love!”

After a second’s pause the two women released their handclasp and made their way in to the Courvoisier’s comfortable apartment.

“Ah, Nancy, Kathie!” Eugen greeted them as they entered the salon. It was a spacious room, more old-fashioned than its counterpart downstairs, for Dr. Courvoisier had inherited several good quality pieces from his paternal ancestors. He beckoned them to come in and take a seat, “Would you like a drink? Dinner is almost ready.”

“In five minutes!” Biddy appeared behind them with a smile. “Please, sit down and be comfortable, won’t you? Hilary told us you’d been walking all afternoon - it’s tired you must be.”

“Thanks,” Nancy accepted the drink proffered to her and settled into a convenient armchair, “It was quite a long afternoon, actually.”

Hilary cast her friend a glance and came to her own swift conclusions. “Anything to report?”

Nancy gave a relaxed smile, “You mean about Hilda’s request? Yes, I have made a decision.” She glanced at the other three, and explained briefly for their benefits, “Hilda Annersley is going away for a term to work on an educational commission. She came round this afternoon to ask whether I’d fill in as Head while she’s away.”

“Well?” Hilary prompted, as Biddy sat down to listen and the two men looked interested, “And are you going to?”

“Yes,” Nancy’s considered answer was far more assured than her initial reaction had been, “Yes, I am. Oh, I don’t expect it to be easy,” she nodded at her old school chum, “but it will be an interesting experience. And I owe Hilda – and the School – a great deal.”

Eugen rested his hand gently on his wife’s shoulder, “Many of us have reasons to be grateful to the School.” He regarded Nancy consideringly, “Please accept my congratulations. It cannot have been a simple decision, but I am sure you will do the job very well.”

“My congratulations as well,” Biddy said softly. She exchanged understanding glances with Nancy, who had been her colleague for several years, “I hope you enjoy the experience.”

“Good for you, Nancy,” Phil added his assent. “You’ll make an excellent leader.”

Hilary gave her friend a warm look. “This deserves a toast, don’t you think?” she picked up her glass, “To Nancy – may you enjoy this challenge!”

As the friends raised their glasses and chimed in with the toast, Nancy caught Kathie's eye and smiled. There would be challenges ahead. But she knew for a certainty that, whatever those challenges might be, she would not be alone in meeting them.

Thank you, Catherine! That's a lovely place to leave it for an interlude.

In fact, (ducks from howls of horror from other CBBers) it might be a good idea to do lots of little bits like this so we've always got our fix of Nancy and Kathie!
