Sarah G-G jumped as her friend poked her,

“Sarah, earth to Sarah, the talk’s over, everyone’s leaving, were you paying attention to anything at all. I don’t think you were listening, come on let’s go.”

“No, it’s ok, you go, I’ll catch up. I just need to speak to someone,” Sarah said, with a glance towards the front of the room where the speaker was standing surrounded by eager students. She looked exactly like the books said, but Sarah still could not quite believe it. How could Len Maynard be standing here in the flesh? After all she was a character in a children’s book, not a real person.

Sarah, along with one of her friends from university, was attending a series of talks on modern foreign languages at Oxford university. The first day of talks had been interesting, but today she had heard not a word. She had been in shock and confused ever since the announcement that the advertised speaker had been taken ill and that she was to be replaced by one of the university’s most promising PhD students, Helena Maynard.

On hearing the name, Sarah had let out an involuntary gasp, Helen Maynard, how weird it was that someone in reality had that name. She had assumed it was a coincidence nothing else, obviously the books had said that Len had studied languages at Oxford, but they were books nothing else.

She had nearly fainted however, when the speaker walked in. The girl matched the description in the books as well. As the speaker began her talk mentioning how her school in Switzerland had taught her to be trilingual, Sarah realised that this was no coincidence. She spent the rest of the talk staring at the speaker in awe and puzzling over how such a thing was possible. As a result she had missed the whole talk and was surprised to see the lecture hall emptying.

As the crowds around the speaker thinned, Sarah decided to take her chance and walked over to Len. More and more people left till eventually it was just Sarah and Len remaining. Len smiled at her, “How can I help you?”

“I was wondering,” replied Sarah, “are you the daughter of Josephine Bettany?”

“Why yes, I am” replied Len, “are you…”

Len could not finish her sentence as on hearing those words Sarah fainted. A few minutes later she awoke to see Len kneeling besides her holding a glass of water. “Here sip this” she said. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m ok,” replied Sarah. “I haven’t been feeling to well recently though,” she lied, “that’s probably why I fainted.”

“You poor dear,” said Len, “how about we go and get something to eat, something to boost you for the rest of the day.” Sarah assented, still unable to believe what she had heard and the two went off to get some food. They found they had a lot in common and made plans to meet again.

Later that year, Sarah was thrilled to get an invitation inviting her to the Maynard’s huge Christmas party. She wondered just who else she would meet………….

*giggles* Oh, dear, I think Sarah will probably be overwhelmed when she does go - and just how is she going to explain that she knows them all already?

*wonders if this story doesn't deserve a sequel*
