#1: Chalet School Musicians Author: JennyLocation: Gloucestershire PostPosted: Thu Aug 26, 2004 9:34 am

Hiya, I'm quite new to this forum but after reading all your wonderful drabbles I decided to have a go at my own. However I was quite nervous about putting it on because all of yours are so good. However here we go!

This is to combine my passion of music with my love of Chalet School books.

Amelia stood nervously, fiddling with the bow of her cello. She had waited for this evening for ages and now it had finally come, she wasn’t sure she wanted it to begin. She was about to meet Margia Stevens, famous pianist. Not only was she going to meet Ms Stevens but she was going to play with her as well, in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Ms Stevens playing the lead in some piano concerto which at this precise moment Amelia had forgotten the name of.

“Lia!” a pretty, blonde girl called from across the room. Amelia breathed a sigh of relief. Suzanne was her best friend and Amelia felt sure that if anyone could calm her nerves, Suzanne could. “What was that great big sigh for? You almost blew me over!” Amelia sighed again. “I’m sorry, Susie but I’m so nervous about meeting Margia Stevens, that I can’t think of anything else. I’m so afraid that I’m going to mess up my part and make a total idiot out of myself!” Susie grinned at her friend. “Don’t worry, old thing.” “She won’t bite your head off, and just think she came from that beloved Chalet School of yours, so she can’t be that high and mighty. Look at how you have turned out.” Susie turned and fled, before she could hear Amelia’s cutting reply.
Amelia laughed to herself before returning to Suzanne’s lingering remark. Suzanne mentioned the Chalet School, a thriving school situated in the Bernese Oberland for girls of all nationalities. Amelia had spent five happy years, ending her career there as Music Prefect and finally Head Girl after Cecilia Maynard left to pursue a career as a child psychologist. Amelia soon left also to pursue her career but this time in the world of music, hoping to become a professional cellist. Here she met Suzanne, a small, pretty girl with blonde curls and blue eyes in contrast with her tall, slim features with auburn hair and brown eyes. On first meeting with Suzanne in an Orchestra social meeting, she expected this small girl to play the flute or a violin like most of the girls who attended the chalet school. However to her surprise and amusement she found that Suzanne was the owner of a bassoon! This surprising detail soon broke the ice between them and found themselves firm friends...

Good start, Jenny. Will be watching for more. I always had a soft spot for Margia and I'm interested in how another CS musician of this generation would have got on. A different world from Margia's.

thank you for all your lovely comments Very Happy. Here's the next little bit for all you impatient souls Wink

Amidst all this dreaming, Amelia hadn’t noticed a slender, greyed haired woman whose face still retained some of the strong, bright features of her youth approach her with dancing eyes.
“Excuse me” the woman asked. “You wouldn’t happen to have the time would you? I fear I’m awfully late.”
Amelia looked up, blushing slightly at her dreamlike state. “Oh, I’m sorry, it’s ten to seven, but don’t worry, you aren’t that late, the musician of honour hasn’t even arrived yet so the concert won’t start for a while.” The woman smiled at the younger girl.
“So may I have the pleasure of knowing whom I am speaking to?” “Oh yes, I’m sorry, I’m Amelia Johnson but my friends call me Lia” The woman smiled, her eyes twinkling mischievously. “Amelia. That is a very pretty name. I have a friend who would love your name for her book. Have you heard of her? Her name is Josephine M. Bettany.” Amelia’s eyes sparkled. “Yes, yes I heard of her, I’m friends with her daughter, Cecil Maynard and her mother often visited the school where I went. She often took us for splendid English teas!” The woman laughed heartedly. “Yes, that sounds like Joey. So I see that you are also a Chaletian. So am I, though it was a very long time ago. I suppose you could call me an Old Girl from the Dark Ages.” The woman grinned playfully, looking more in her twenties then a woman of her respectable age. Amelia smiled back, feeling sure that she knew this woman from somewhere. The woman glanced at her, feeling sure that her next remark would disconcert this handsome girl. “So now I should introduce myself. I’m Margia Stevens, the musician of honour.” Her eyes dancing at the news she had just bestowed on Amelia. Amelia blushed furiously, ashamed at her actions towards the Ms. Margia Stevens. “I’m so sorry.” Amelia mumbled. “Don’t worry about it, dear. I’m often late and rightly so. It’s a musician’s right.” Amelia glanced up into Margia’s soft eyes and smiled. “I hope that we shall be friends. I’m dying to hear about the old crowd. Is Miss Annersley still running the place? Is Peggy Burnett and Nancy Wilmot still around?” Before Amelia could answer, a bell rang out sounding ten minutes until the concert started. “Oh bother,” Margia exclaimed. “I was hoping for a nice long chinwag with you, but if that’s the bell I better go and warm up these old fingers of mine. I’m rather nervous myself. My partner is in the audience and he is very critical of my playing, thankfully. I couldn’t stand a gushing partner, could you?” Margia laughed before departing to find a nearby piano. Amelia stood for a minute, stunned at what had just happened to her. “So you have finally met the Margia Stevens.” Amelia thought. “And she isn’t as high and mighty as you thought she would be. In fact, she is just like someone of our age. So that what you get for making assumptions before you meet people, Amelia Jane Johnson! So now you better follow Margia’s example and go and warm up yourself.”

Thankyou for this part Jenny, it's lovely.

It definitely has a certain EBDish echo to it (and that is a compliment, by the way!)

Very Happy I did wonder if that was Margia, she hasn't changed a lot! That was a great first meeting, a good advert for the Chalet School too.

I always liked Margia, I'm so glad to see that she's still just as nice. That was a wonderful way of introducing herself.

If you're sitting down, how can the orchestra see you?

Some more would be greatly appreciated Jenny - Margia was always one of my favourites too.

Oh I love watching orchestra especially conductors, they are awfully funny Very Happy Some can get so enthusiastic! Sorry about the shortness of this part but it is my favourite part.

On stage, Amelia sat and watched Margia enter the concert hall and sit down at the piano as if she was greeting an old friend. Amelia sighed happily. In a few weeks, she would be returning to University to start a postgraduate course in the new field of music therapy. She had recently been in contact with one Cecil Maynard, who, on hearing about Amelia’s career change, proceeded in approaching Amelia with a proposition. Cecil was hoping to open up a psychology unit in America and had invited Amelia to join as resident music therapist. However that was in the future and at this precise moment, Amelia settled down and as the conductor’s baton raised, she let the music wash over her, blissfully unaware of a tall slim woman with black hair recently bobbed, sitting in the audience, smiling at her future daughter-in-law...

*g* If she's looking at Margia whichever son it is would be nothing more than a toyboy!
Thanks Jenny, is it too early to askfor more?

If it was Margia, she would be one of the few chalet school girls to be a bigamist! Very Happy I did mention that Margia had a partner who was very critical of her work but I think she decided to keep her maiden name as a stage name. However Margia the Bigamist would make a very interesting storyline, don't u think? Wink

Well Jenny you mentioned a partner - but didn't say his name or whether he was a husband - so strictly speaking it could be Margia! Laughing Wink

What a lovely new drabble Jenny. You have no need to be nervous this is a lovely story. Would now like to hear more of the concert, who is the woman in the audience and will Amelia join Cecil or stay in the concert world?
