Captains Personal Log Stardate 45489.25

There are times I wonder for all our advances whether the human race has made as much progress as we would like to think that we have over the centuries. Having just finished negotiating a peace treaty between the Degnoran and the Baltan, in accordance with Federation Protocols, there were times in the negotiations where I wished that I could have stood up and told them to blow themselves to hell, I didn?t care.

I must confess that umpity great grandmother Maries life sounds so much simpler and carefree. These ancient diaries that were found in the secret room at home tell me so much about her life as a schoolgirl at the Chalet School in the Tyrol.

Ooh! Ancient diaries! Sounds exciting. Which Marie would this be...?

An intriguing start, Ravenseyes! More please ... Smile

Also, which Captain.... sounds like Janeaway (sp?) to me, and you can imagine Kathryn longing for simpler pleasures

Please, may we have some more.

Anything where Captain Kathryn Janeway appears is all right by me. I loved that series -- my very favourite Star Trek ever!

Captains Personal Log Stardate 45489.45

Voyager continues its lonely path through the Delta Quadrant. We are approaching an area that Seven advises me the Borg referred prosaically to as Sector 3987 B. Other races call it the Grofor Void. It is an area of, well most unscientifically nothing. Even the stars are widely spaced. No solar systems, no gravimetric eddies, no nebulas, no asteroids. Even at warp 6 it will take us 5 days to cross the void. Seven reports that the Borg have never experienced an ?problems? in this area including attack but with the exception of Species 8472 I can?t think of anyone who goes out of their way to hunt and attack the Borg. Still if it stays quiet I am going to start reading Grandmother Maries diaries.

July 5 1924

Papa has told us that we are going to have a holiday and we are going to the Tiernsee up in the mountains of the Tyrol. Papa says that Mama needs a holiday because she has been sick and Wein gets so hot in summer. Wanda , Kurt and I are looking forward to it. Papa says that Mamsell will be coming but we don?t have to do lessons she is going to help Mama look after us. Papa knows a man Herr Mariani who lives in Innsbruck and he told Papa all about the Tyrol and how nice it is. We are going by express train to Innsbruck, then we get a train to Spartz at the bottom of the mountain. The Papa says we get a mountain train up to the Tiernsee. Papa is being mean and won?t tell us what a mountain train is. He says we have to wait and see. Then we get a steamer across the lake to our hotel we are staying at the Kron Prinz Karl.

Random thought re Capt Janeway and A Thrilling Term at Janeways - do you think one of the scriptwriters of Voyager was an EBD fan?

I'm going to try and get my husband to read this - he's just bought FIVE seasons of Next Gen DVDs Shocked

#8:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Tue Aug 17, 2004 2:48 pm

Most ingenious, do we get an explanation of how the Captain came to be one of Marie's descendants?

#9:  Author: JackieJLocation: Kingston upon Hull PostPosted: Tue Aug 17, 2004 9:47 pm

Okay, I'm freaked now. I'm not exactly what you'd call a Star Trek fan, although I seem to have absorbed knowledge from being around Ben's many books and DVD's, but I didn't realise I could guess the right captain from a little bit like that, although, I guess it makes more sense for it to be a woman, doesn't it.

More please?

The Grofor Void has so far proved uneventful so I am taking this time to allow as much downtime for the crew as possible. We are well supplied thanks to B Lanna and Neelixs efforts so I am encouraging as much recreation use of the holodeck and sports facilities as the crew wishes. For myself I have some of the best tasting replicated coffee I have had for a while and I am going to continue with Grandmother Maries diaries.

July 12 1924.
The Tiernsee is so beautiful. It is a wonderful blue lake and Papa says we can probably go swimming in a couple of days. The little mountain train was funny. The carriages are open and have cloth shade roofs above them. It goes very slowly and pulls itself up the tracks to Breisau. We could smell all the pretty mountain flowers. When we got to Breisau we got a little white puffy steamer around the lake. Mama says she already feels better as the breeze off the lake is very cooling for her and there is not so much smoke in the air. Papa thinks that he may get a chalet here for us to stay in until autumn. Mama says that will be fun and we will learn how to do things in the house with her as there are not lots of servants here. Mama was telling Wanda Kurt and me that it doesn?t matter if you are rich or poor you need to know how to do things. She was telling us about the rich nobles in Russia who now have no servants and some of them starved because they did not know simple things like how to cook or clean or even cut firewood for a stove or how to sew or mend clothes.

This reminds me of how Voyager started out. I know we do the Starfleet survival courses but actually having to face the reality of relying on ourselves, and minimizing the use of replicators and having to repair things was a huge learning curve for the Voyager crew. I think perhaps we were fortunate in some ways with our Marquis crewmembers as they were used to scavenging and salvaging and patching together systems as they did not have the luxury of Starbases and repair depots. Mr Neelix also has taught the crew so much about genuine cooking, although some of his concoctions have been problematic, other dishes have become firm favorites with the crew. Even Tuvok has been known to describe Neelixs vegetable casserole as adequate which from a Vulcan must be high praise.

Thanks ravenseyes. I like how she's able to draw parallells (I cannot spell that word) even in such a different way of life.

July 17 1924

We had a lot of fun today. We were on the steamer and Wanda said she saw Gisela Mariani and her little sister Maria. They were with two English girls Grizel and Joey. Joey?s sister has opened a school in the big chalet and they were there all last term. The English girls were very nice. Joey speaks German very well but Grizel is much slower and sometimes she makes funny mistakes. They took us and showed us around their school and told us all about last term. Gisela is the Head Girl. I wonder if Papa would think about letting Wanda and me go there because Mamsell told us she is to be married at Christmas time to Herr von Freiten. He is a Rechtsanwalt (lawyer) and has an apartment near the Opera house. Mamsell told us she is looking forward to making a lovely home for her husband. She told us that she had enjoyed teaching us but she was glad she would be fulfilling Our Fathers plan for women and going to be a wife and mother. We are all going to the wedding and Mama told us that when we go back to Wein we will have to look for a present for them.

Yesterday was fun to in a different way. Mama showed us how to clear, clean and black the stove and clean the kitchen. We got so dirty trying to do this. Kurt still has black in his hair even though he has washed it. Mama explained why it was important to keep the stove clean and clear so that it burnt nicely and it heats evenly so that the food does not scorch or only cook partly. When we had finished with the stove we heated lots of hot water on it and she showed us how to clean the cold stone pantry and how to store the meat and vegetables so they do not go bad. Then we cleaned all the bench tops and the table and finally the floor. It is important to keep them all clean so that germs do not grow and make you sick.
It was very hard and when Papa came home at Mittagessen he laughed at us and told us we looked like ragamuffins.

Captains Personal Log Stardate 45489.55

Mr Neelix was certainly what could be referred to as a ragamuffin today. He attempted to create a new dish today and it exploded. When I saw him he was cleaning the remains off the ceiling, walls and floor of the mess. Fortunately he had prepared the Delta Quadrant version of pizza so there was plenty of food for the crew. However, his version of Elaysian cloud dessert is off the menu.

I am thankful that women no longer have to choose between career and family. I realize that children are not going to be an option for myself now but Mark and I had talked about starting a family when I returned from the mission to the badlands. I suppose children will also become an issue on Voyager. We already have Naomi Wilder and as the crew develop relationships there is going to be discussion about family. Is it fair to bring children into the world of a lost starship in a quadrant so far from home. Can we afford it in terms of supplies and resources. Is it safe to think about becoming a family ship. We are not a big galaxy class starship, we are a scientific based short term research ship. Yet for virtually all the cultures on board Voyager the selection of a mate and the eventual procreation, by whatever means the culture uses, is the norm so how could I prevent it.

Very interesting - so different a life, yet the situation Voyager is in allows more parallels to be drawn.

Thanks Ravenseyes.

I like the way Janeway connects past and present, as well. Hope to see much more of this.

Ooh, ooh! Maybe Tom can make the CS into a holodeck programme!!!! Shocked

July 21 1924

Today Papa, Wanda and I went to the Chalet school with Joey, Grizel and Fraulein Bettany. Papa would like Wanda and I to attend the Chalet school when the term starts. We are to sleep in different dormitories. I wonder what it will be like sleeping with other girls in a room. I am to be in Green dormitory with Joey, another girl from Innsbruck called Freida, a French girl called Simone and another Englander Margia who Joey says plays the piano very well. The head of our dormitory is Juliet Carrick. She lives with Fraulein Bettany but she is staying with Freida’s older sister in Innsbruck at the moment. Wanda is going to be the big girls dormitory. Gisela told us she gets a little room to herself because she is headgirl. Fraulein Bettany is called Madame, and then there is a French lady Mlle Lepattre and an English lady Miss Maynard who are the teachers. It will be a lot different that being taught by Mamsell. Madame told us we speak very good English so it will not be so hard but I am still a little afraid.

Nice to know that some things never change. I remember arriving at Star Fleet Academy in San Francisco and I was so nervous. It all looked so huge and daunting and in your first two years you have to share a room and I had never ever shared a room with anyone before and I was terrified that I would be roomed with a Horta or a Tellerite. Fortunately my roommate was an unjoined Trill. Kyme and I got on very well. We were both interested in the sciences and although mine was more mathmatical Kyme was interested in exobiology. She became a first contact specialist for Starfleet and was posted to Starfleet diplomatic corps. I transferred to the Command track with a sciences specialty and here I am in command of Voyager.

September 15 1924

I have just had my first few days at the Chalet School and I think that I will enjoy it very much. The lessons are very different to what we had with Mamsell. Because it is so hot at the moment we are swimming in the lake each afternoon which is very refreshing. We do some lessons in the morning, have Mittagessen and a rest, then we go swimming, and then do some more lessons until sixteen hours. We have free time until seventeen hours then we do preparation until eighteen hours and have Abendessen at nineteen hours. We prepare for our bed at twenty thirty hours and the lights are turned off at twenty one hours. I enjoy the geography lessons most of all because learning about all the other people and countries in the world is very interesting.

Sounds like Grandmother Marie would be right at home in Starfleet. To boldly go where no one has gone before is one of the basic precepts of Starfleet and certainly no one could deny Voyager is fulfilling this role with a vengeance. I know from family history that she traveled widely and traveling from Europe to America in those times was a significant trip taking several weeks on a ship. Apparently Grandfather Eugen?s mother was an American so the traveling was partially keeping in touch with the family. We are nearing the edge of the Grofor Void and made contact with a Varan trading freighter today. They have given us coordinates for the main planet in the first system out of the Void which they say is the commercial hub for this system. They have said the Fara is a peaceful planet and the trade is honest. We have encountered the Varan before and found their information accurate so we are preparing a list of what we require and what we have to trade. Mr Neelix has advised me that the foodstores need replenishing but the hydroponics bay is flourishing and we are fast becoming self sufficient in vegetables and greens. He brought me some flowers today as he has been experimenting with growing plants from various planets to make the crew feel more at home and he had found a rose called Peace and has grown this for the crew who identify with Earth. I must confess I do love roses. To me they have such a timeless elegance and wonderful perfume.
