I know the time scale for this is wrong but it is only by a few years...sorry anyway! Really worried about posting this so please be nice, even though the ending is really lame! Confused

Standing in the entrance hall of the world famous chalet school, where she had been told to wait by a harrased looking misstress, with a bemused smile on her face was sixteen year old Fleur Matieux. She had not wanted to be sent away to boarding school, especially an all girls one, but she was philosophical little creature and was determined to have some fun now she was here. Watching the endless lines of girls file into the hall made Fleur move back a few paces. She felt intimidated being amonsgt so many girls. Back home in her group of friends there were five girls and ten boys. How was she going to get along with so many girls?
She scanned the faces of the older girls, girls who might be in her form. They were all chatting and laughing merrily, would she be able to be friendly with any of these girls. She found herself looking at a group of three girls, they were about her own age. The one standing in the centre had blonde girls clustering around her delicately featured face and dancing blue eyes. Standing to her left was another blonde haired girl but her hair was a darker blonde than the other girl's and straight, her eyes were brown and alert. The third girl had long black hair pulled severely into two plaits, her eyes were grey and dreamy making her look as if she was lost in a world of her own. All three girls had potential in them thought Fleur. The curly blonde looked as if she liked to create minor sensations, while the other blonde in the right clothes could have automatically fitted in to the group back home, she had the same alertness in her eyes. It was the dark haired girl who appealed the most to Fleur though, she would be a loyal friend she thought and behind her dreamy looks would show a strong insight to character.
Fleur was still observing the other girls when the misstress came back, "Oh there you are Fleur, you'll be in lower sixth for this term. Now let me see who can sheep dog you?"
Fleur raised her eyebrows, what did sheepdog mean?
"Ailie Russel." The misstress called out, "come here please."
To Fleurs delight the curly haired blonde turned out to be Ailie Russel.
"Yes Miss Ferras," She said smiling.
"Will you sheepdog Fleur Matieux please, she's in your form."
"Yes. Come along Fleur this way." She said grinning and beginning to walk away and then noticing that Fleur was not following stopped. "Oh sorry I didn't realise you had to carry your cello."
Fleur burst out laughing, "This isn't a cello." She giggled. "It's my guitar!"
"Really?" Ailie said with interest. "You know I don't believe anyone here has ever played guitar."
"Seriously? Why at home everyone plays? I hope people don't mind the noise."
"I'm sure they won't, the practice rooms are fairly secluded." Ailie glanced at Fleur's pretty face and perfect brown ringlet curls enviously, it took her ages to make her hair presentable and constantly had to re-do it. Looking more closely at Fleurs face she realised something which was a big No No in the Chalet school. Fleur was wearing make up!

Thanks for this promising start. Smile Will Fleur be able to fall in with CS rules?

That looks interesting. I like new characters coming in and showing a different slant on the CS and the girls.

Keep it coming, Cazx, that is likely to be very popular!

*feeling kind, so won't chant, yet*

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! Laughing
Here's a little bit more.

“Um Fleur…” Ailie began awkwardly, she did not want to seem to be finding fault with Fleur in the first few minutes of meeting her but well she could not let Fleur break rules and set a bad example to the younger girls.
“What?” Fleur asked curiously.
“Well I don’t know how to say this but you shouldn’t be wearing make up you know. It’s against school rules.” Ailie was trying her best to be nice about this; she had taken a fancy to Fleur.
“Oh Daddy did mention it now I’m thinking of it but I can’t not wear make up you know. I’m hideous without it.”
“Fleur,” Ailie implored, “if you don’t take it off then you’ll get into a dreadful row with the staff.”
“The thing is Ailie I can’t take it off now because I’ll have massive black rings around my eyes and look like a panda!” Fleur laughed, she seemed to laugh a lot. But seeing Ailie’s anxious expression she added, “Maybe later I’ll take some off.”
Ailie left the situation as it was. She had the feeling that if any of the Mistresses asked her why she had not told Fleur to remove her make up then Fleur would say that she had. She made sure that Fleur had put her coat away and put on her house slippers, before leading her to the dining room for the evening meal. Fleur found herself sitting opposite the girl with the long black hair, while Ailie and the other blonde girl sat on either side of her.
“Fleur, this is Janice Chester,” Said Ailie indicating the girl with the plaits, “and this is Judy Willoughbury. Jan, Judy, this is Fleur Matieux she’s with us this year.”
“Hi.” Fleur said brightly.
“Hello,” said the one Ailie called Janice, “Did you have a good journey getting here?”
“Oh it didn’t take that long. My Grandparents live in Geneva and I’d been with them for the last week.”
“Where do you live then?” Asked Judy.
“Swansea in Wales you know, but I was born in Switzerland.”
“Why I live on the Welsh border,” Exclaimed Ailie, “and so does Jan.”
“Really, why you must come and visit me during the hols. You can come to one of my house parties, when Daddy and Dominique are away. Everyone back home told me to invite people from here.”
Fleur saw Ailie’s eyes widen and knew she had both shocked and impressed her. Janice looked a bit dubious at this suggestion, while Judy looked both disapproving and curious.
“What do you mean by house party?” Judy asked.
“Why I mean a party where you listen to music, and dance in one room. Then in another room you can socialise.” Fleur did not mention the fact that generally a vast amount of alcohol was consumed at these parties, she thought that this would shock them too much.
“Why did you come here?” Asked Janice, thinking it was best to stop discussing such wild things as house parties in front of the whole school when you were a sub prefect. “Was it to be close to your Grandparents?”
“No not really. Daddy decided after last summer that it was best if I went to school. He was talking to some doctor colleague of his and they suggested I come here. I didn’t want to you know but sulking didn’t get me anywhere so here I am. I suppose once I’ll get used to here then I’ll like it well enough but the question is will I ever get used to it?” Fleur sighed dramatically; Ailie, Judy and Janice looked at each other they had never met anyone quite like her before.

Here's a tiny bit more, let me know what you think! Oh and sorry for gramatical errors!

It was after dinner that evening when Ailie took Fleur to meet Miss Annersley. Fleur gasped and opened her eyes in wonder when Ailie curtsied to her headmistress. Miss Annersley laughed at the bewilderment on Fleur’s face and gently said, “Its one of the customs of the school that has survived from Tyrol Fleur. Every girl does it when she comes into my study.” Turning to Ailie she said “Will you wait outside for Fleur please, I won’t be keeping her long.”
Once Ailie had left the room Miss Annersley began to speak again, “Now Fleur I hope you will enjoy your time spent at the Chalet School, and will profit from spending time here.”
Fleur stood there rather awkwardly not knowing what to say.
“I realise it must be hard for you coming into a new school environment when you have only two more years in school left but I’m sure the girls will do their best to make you feel welcome. One more thing Fleur before you go, did Ailie tell you that the girls here are not permitted to wear make up.”
“Yes.” Said Fleur defiantly.
“Then why didn’t you take it off when she told you.”
“Because… well because I didn’t want to.”
“Fleur you must realsie that in a school like this you cannot wear makeup. The younger girls might be influenced and there are girls of different nationalities here whose culture and upbringing has been different from your own.”
“Alright I’ll make a deal with you Miss Annersley I won’t wear make up in school time but if we go on expeditions when it’s just the two sixths then I can wear it then.” Fleur sounded bolder than she felt but she had a horror of meeting people she knew while looking like scarecrow.
“No Fleur.” Miss Annersley said firmly, “You can not wear any make up while you’re here full stop. Now I want you to hand it in to Matron.”
“If I give you my word that I won’t then can I please keep it.” Fleur pleaded. “I never break my word.”
Miss Annersley feeling that she should stick to her guns found herself faltering, the child looked truthful and she believed that dishonesty had not been the reason why she had been sent to the Chalet school.
“I’ll think about it.” Miss Annersley said slowly, “Now run along, Ailie is waiting.”
Fleur frowning at being told to run along as if she was a child of six left the room.
Miss Annersley, a troubled expression on her face picked up the telephone and dialled a familiar number.

More, so quickly! this is another drabble that seems to point the difference between the CS and developments in the big outside world. 16yr olds in the 60's certainly would have worn make up and also might well have 'bargained' with the Head!

I wonder what Joey will make of this one?

I forsee fireworks as the other girls learn more about Fleur! It's good to see a "modern" girl amongst the Chaletians though.
More please Very Happy

*wonders if the Abess is calling Joey and if so, if it just the regular "HELP" or if Joey is somehow linked to the new girl.

Ooh, this looks really promising, Fleur is certainly a different kind of girl to what the school is used to.
Please carry on - soon.

I really like this! Fleur seems very beleivable, I can just imagine a 60s child from outside the CS world reacting to being plonked into essentially the dark ages. We weren't allowed to wear make up at my school, and a lot of girls got very stubburn about it.

#17:  Author: Sarah_LLocation: Redcar PostPosted: Wed Jan 21, 2004 11:35 pm

We weren't meant to wear make-up at my school, certainly not anything that was obvious. I like how this is going, it really highlights the fact that CS girls weren't part of the real world.

#18:  Author: Kathy_SLocation: midwestern US PostPosted: Wed Jan 21, 2004 11:55 pm

In my HS (early 70s), make-up was definitely permitted, though actual usage went from zero to very heavy, depending on clique membership and parents. Jumping back to my mother's school days (WWII), pretty much everyone wore lipstick and whatever the stuff in the compact was -- name escapes me at the moment -- but things like eye make-up were frowned upon.

Here's a bit more! Might even add more a bit later if I have time!

“Come on Fleur,” Ailie said impatiently, “We’ve got to be in prayers in five minutes. What are you?”
“Sorry.” Asked Fleur who had been thinking of her encounter with Miss Annersley.
“Are you Protestant or Catholic?”
“Oh neither.” Said Fleur, “I don’t care much for religion you know.”
“But…” Stammered Ailie, “but what do you believe in then?”
“Sex, drugs and Rock n’ Roll,” drawled Fleur lazily, before beginning to laugh at the expression on Ailie’s face. “I’m joking about that last bit you know." She said tounge in cheek."What do I believe in? I don’t know…life I suppose, oh and having a good time of course.”
“Everyone here has to go to prayers though Fleur, you can’t be the exception to the rule.” However Ailie was secretly intrigued by the fact that Fleur showed no signs of caring about what was one of the most central aspects of life in the school. She was also wondering about Fleur’s definition of having a good time.
“I think I can. I told Daddy that I’d only come here if I was to be excused from the religious side of school life, he said he’d sort it out for me.” Fleur was enjoying shocking Ailie and wondered if there would ever be a time when Ailie would shock her.
“What are you going to do while we’re all in prayers though?” Asked Ailie just as the school secretary Miss Dene caught up with the pair.
“Fleur.” She called. “Will you come here please.”
“Yes.” Fleur said questionably as she reached Miss Dene, Ailie following her.
“I see your Father has requested that you don’t attend any of our religious ceremonies. This is very unusual but seeing as you are in the sixth then it has been decided that your Father’s wishes will be obeyed.”
“Oh good,” broke in Fleur smiling widely.
“Hmm, anyway as I was saying you can either sit in the sixth room common room or work in the library during this time.” Rosalie Dene was privately surprised that this new girl had been allowed to be exempt from prayers, the first girl in the school’s history.
“Oh.” Fleur paused, “would it be possible for me to practice on my guitar do you know?”
“I don’t think so.” Said Miss Dene quickly, not quite believing the cheek of this girl. “Now Ailie you go off to prayers with the rest and collect Fleur from the Sixth form common room afterwards. I will take Fleur there.”

Here's some more for tonight! Hope you like it!

“Why didn’t Fleur come to prayers Ailie?” It was Judy who asked the question, as she, Ailie and Janice made their way to the sixth form common room.
“She said she wasn’t religious and didn’t want to go.”
“Really? Why she’s one of the strangest girls I’ve ever met.” Remarked Janice.
“Do you think?” Said Ailie. “But in a way I do understand why she doesn’t want to go.”
“What do you mean?” Asked Judy curiously.
“Well I suppose she would find it boring. I mean I do sometimes and I do believe. And I don’t think Fleur likes being bored.” Ailie added impressively as she opened the door to the sixth form common room.
Fleur was curled up in one of the armchairs reading. Her brown curly head looked up when the door opened.
“Oh hello, you’ve finished then.” She said smiling at them.
“Yes, we’re going to be dancing in the hall now.” Ailie told her.
“Seriously?” Asked Fleur in delight, “Why that’s marvellous!” She jumped out of the chair, her book falling on to the floor as she did so. Janice bent down to pick it up; she went to hand it over to Fleur but then froze.
“Fleur, I don’t know if you will be allowed to read this.” She said slowly avoiding Fleur’s eye.
“Why not?” Asked Fleur indignantly, “Catcher in the Rye is seen as one of the greatest novels of the modern age. Why shouldn’t I read it?”
“Miss Annersley may not like it.”
“Well what Miss Annersley does not know will not hurt her will it?” Fleur took the book from Janice and placed it in her locker, “Now let’s not quarrel.” She implored slipping her arm through Janice’s, “Lets go and dance.”
Fleur was in for a shock though when the dancing began. She discovered that dancing in the Chalet School was very different from the dancing that she was used to. Fleur did not know how to waltz, nor did she know any of the group dances that all the other girls seemed to know.
“I thought you liked dancing.” Asked Ailie at one point, seeing that Fleur was looking unimpressed.
“I do.” Fleur told her. “But I like dancing to The Beatles, The Stones and The Who, not to music from the 1930’s.”
“We’re not allowed to dance to any of those groups.” Judy said somewhat mournfully. “One of the girls back home has every record by The Beatles and I listened to some last summer. They were quite fast and catchy, I can imagine them being fun to dance to. But I wasn’t allowed to go to any of the dances that she went to.”
“I didn’t think you wanted to go.” Janice said pointedly, she did not like the way Ailie and Judy were already beginning to change their opinions to fit in with this new girl. “I thought you wanted to play tennis much more.”
“I did then, but now thinking about it, it would have been interesting to have gone to at least one dance. Just to see what it was like.”
Ailie seeing the expression in Janice’s eyes decided to change the subject. “Have you got any brothers or sisters Fleur?”
“Yes but it’s rather complicated.”
“How?” Ailie asked as all three girls crowded around Fleur, this sounded interesting.
“Well I suppose technically I have two brothers, one sister and two half sisters and a half brother. You see I have one elder sister called Emma, an older brother called Christian and a twin called Paul. But when I was four my parents divorced,” the eyes of Fleur’s listeners widened, “and my mother ran off with Emma and Paul. Daddy looked after Christian and I, although he was always trying to find Emma and Paul too. Then two years ago he married Dominique, my stepmother, and then last January my half sister Sasha was born. This summer my mother suddenly reappeared wanting to see Christian and I, she had also remarried and had a son and daughter with her husband.” Fleur stopped talking and looked around the three girls were hanging on to her every word.
“Was it strange getting to know your Mother again after so many years?” Judy could not stop herself from asking despite Janice’s disapproving look.
"I only saw her once.” Fleur said as if this was to have been the expected answer. “I see Paul though, I think he wants to come and live with us. Which I wouldn’t mind even though it will always be me and Chris rather than me and Paul. Emma’s ok but she can be awfully odd at times and I think it’s best if I don’t see much of her, we’d only argue. But my mother well I never want to see her again. It’s her own fault.” She paused before calmly adding, “I think I hate her you know.”

Wow - what are the others going to make of all that? I'm wondering if the school knew all this before they agreed to enrol Fleur, it does rather go against all the ideas they try to instill inthe girls.

I'm interested to see how it pans out with Fleur and the other three. I always like Janice, thought she was a good character, although it's only in the later books that she really features, so you never get to see how she turns out.

I like the divorce concept being introduced too. Speaking as someone who went through a divorce herself and then had to bring up two small children as a single mum, it's great to see the perspective of a chalet school girl who doesn't come from the traditional "perfect" family.

When I was at boarding school (1959-1962!) I had a tranny at school, and used to listen to Radio Luxembourg after lights out! We also had a record player in the Common Room. Have to say that Saturday night dancing was all the old-fashioned stuff though! Never could do it, so I locked myself in the loo and read - it was compulsory to go!!! Cool

Wow, this is really good... one small quibble though, I think the sixths were allowed to wear some makeup by the time the school got to Switzerland. I think it was mentioned in Problem... but I could be wrong. Anyway, it doesn't really matter, it's a great story!

#43:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 12:00 pm

Oh dear, I havn't got any of the early one's in Switzerland and it's been about eight years since I read the few I managed to find in the library! Also have none of my books on me so the bed times are memory/guess work! Thanx for all of your support! Anyway here's a bit more about the Guitar mad Fleur/cauliflour!

The music stopped, and the trio was forced to break the silence, which had fallen after Fleur’s startling announcement.
“Come on its bed now.” Janice said to Fleur kindly, before clapping her hands over her mouth and running off. Ailie and Judy began to laugh, glad that there was a diversion from Fleur’s news.
“Why did she run off like that?” Asked Fleur worried that for some reason she might have done something to upset her. “And does she really mean it’s time to go to bed now, it’s only half past nine.”
“Jan’s a sub prefect, and it looks like she’s forgotten that she has tasks to do before bed.” Ailie explained her eyes twinkling, nobody would have contemplated making either her or Judy a sub prefect.
“We always go to bed early on the first night.” Judy told her, as they walked up the stairs.
“What time do you go to bed normally then?” Fleur asked fearing that she would not like the answer.
“Ten on weekdays and half past ten on Friday and Saturday.” Ailie explained.
“But I never go to bed before eleven at home and usually stay up until nearly midnight reading. I’ll never be able to get to sleep at half ten let alone half nine.” Fleur wailed, she knew that it would be impossible for her to sleep. She was already worried about girls in her dormitory snoring-she could never sleep when there were people snoring.
“Nobody has any difficulty in falling to sleep Fleur.” Judy said thinking of how tired she was.
“I suppose I might be able to sleep if I can read.” Fleur said slowly, “How long do we get to read?”
“We’re not allowed to read in the evening.” Ailie replied, thinking that Fleur’s upbringing had been very different from her own. “We’re allowed in the morning though.”
“Not allowed to read before bed! Well that settles it; I’ll never be able to sleep tonight. Tomorrow without make up and with bags under my eyes I’ll look such a mess.”
Ailie and Judy glanced at each other, thinking to themselves that Fleur was even more grown up than Lesley Anderson, the head girl of the school. Ailie, Judy and Janice were all in the same dormitory as Fleur, and this was the first term in quite a few years that Ailie had been allowed to be in the same dorm as her friends.
Fleur having arrived at the school earlier than the rest had already unpacked her clothes and had placed photo’s on her desk. Ailie who had followed Fleur in to her cubicle to tell her the rules of the school at night looked at the pictures. There were three of them. One was of Ailie guessed Fleur’s family or rather some of her family. The second photo was of a large group of people and looked as if it had been taken on a beach, Fleur was standing in the middle laughing straight at the camera. It was the final photo that Ailie paid the most attention to. It was of a boy, he had black hair, which fell down and around his face, he was standing next to a motorbike in the photo. His eyebrows where raised but he seemed to be resisting the temptation to laugh, as he had laughter in his eyes. Eyes, which for some reason had a dark line underneath them, rather like the eyeliner, which Fleur was wearing. Ailie noticed that he was holding in his hand a cigarette. Fleur seeing Ailie’s gazing at the photo said, “He’s lovely isn’t he?”
Ailie not knowing if that was what she was thinking said, “Who is he? And why has he got makeup on? ”
“Nikolai, my boyfriend.” Fleur said dreamily. “He wears eyeliner to make him look different, it makes him look so fine I think.”
Ailie opened her mouth then shut it, once again Fleur had left her with nothing to say.
“He’s so stunning isn’t he.”
Janice who had finished her duties came into the cubicle, “Fleur you know we’re not allowed to use slang don’t you, we…” Her voice broke off as she looked at the pictures and picked up the one of Fleur and friends standing on the beach. Fleur just smiled to herself and shrugged her shoulders. She had had the feeling that Janice was going to be the toughest of the three to crack but now she felt that given time Janice would be under her influence just as Ailie and Judy soon would be.

And I had thought Fleur was all right, but I'm not sure I like her coming there with ulterior motives like that.

What a fresh outlook. Although the CS is portrayed as not meeting this sort of problem and certainly I can't recall any mention of rock and roll (shock horror), the girls must have met this sort of thing in home life. I was always a bit disappointed in the later books that they didn't reflect changes in society as they seemed less real than the earlier ones.

I'm enjoying this and can't decide whether I would rather see the school face reality or Fleur absorb the 1930's ethics of the school.

Here's all your getting until Tuesday as am going home for the weekend!
Fleur is all right (in a way) she just wants to convert people to her way of life... but don't think the school world at large will approve!

Miss Annersley had been waiting somewhat impatiently for her friend Joey Maynard to arrive for Kaffee and Kuchen. She had phoned her last night to ask her to come round and had been informed by that lady that the earliest she could come over to the school was the next morning as Claire the youngest Maynard ward had a nasty tummy bug.
“Well Hilda,” Jo said jovially as she bounded into the heads study, “How’s tricks?”
“Joey,” bemoaned the head, “what awful English. How is Claire this morning?”
“Fine, Jack thinks it was a twenty four hour thing. By the way can I see Erica after, she was worried and didn’t want to leave Claire yesterday.”
“Yes, certainly.” Miss Annersley contemplated what she was going to say next.
“What is the matter Hilda?” Joey said softly seeing the troubled expression on the heads face. Hilda looked up and took a deep breath before saying.
“As you know we don’t like to take any new girls in the sixth form, but this term we decided to take one because Sir Jem had recommended the school to her Father. Now Joey I know Madge tellls you everything so I want you to tell me everything you know about Fleur Matieux.”
“Why? Is she creating Problems? From what Madge told me I thought she might.”
“Well she’s not exactly creating problems yet but I think she might. What did Madge say Joey?”
“She wrote to me a few weeks ago about her.” Joey began. “She said that Jem knows Fleur’s father, he’s a doctor you know and sometimes attends medical conferences at the Welsh San. Well Fleur’s father told Jem that Fleur had become a lot wilder over the summer and that he was worried about her. I gather she has always had a fair bit of freedom and is allowed to do most things she wants, but this summer she started staying out till all hours and staying over friend’s houses for days at a time. He said that her friends are also her older brother’s friends, whose nearly eighteen, and although they are individually a nice crowd as a group they can be quite intimidating and he doesn’t like the influence they have on Fleur or what Fleur has on them.”
“So the problem seems to be her friends rather than her personally.”
“Yes,” Joey said slowly, “She isn’t rude to her Father or stepmother or disobedient. But then again he has not stopped her from seeing her friends. Madge said he didn’t want her to stop seeing them and that he liked them all, even her boyfriend, who seems to be one of the wilder ones. I think the deciding factor was the re-emergence of her mother, her parents are divorced you see and Fleur had not seen her mother since she was four.”
Hilda was shocked never in the chalet school’s history had there been a girl whose parents were divorced, whose friends seemed to be a wild crowd and who at only just sixteen had a boyfriend.
“It seems,” Joey continued, “that Fleur did not take this well and took off for the weekend to her boyfriends. When she did come home it was the middle of the night and she was dead drunk after going to a beach party. I don’t believe it was the first time she’d come home drunk. But I think her father feels that the reappearance of her mother could make Fleur tip over the edge. That is why she was sent here.”
Hilda put her head in her hands if she had known all this when she had made her decision to admit Fleur she would have made a different decision. But now it was too late.

I think Fleur's a bit dysfunctional but havn't quite decided yet!

Actually I'm feeling quite sorry for Fleur, even if she thinks she's having a good time. Maybe the her being at the CS will be mutually beneficial.

Well it's a good bit to think about over the weekend...
Sounds like Fleur's got quite a few problems of her own even if she doesn't recognise them. I hope she doesn't succeed in corrupting Ailie, Judy and Janice though.

I can't see why her father, instead of putting his foot down on the staying out and so on, should shunt her off to school in the belief that she might 'tip over the edge' otherwise! She's more likely to do that if she is sent away. She must by feeling insecure under all that surface sophistication. Having her mother turn up out of the blue and then being sent away is pretty rotten!

Poor kid!

To be honest, I don't remember, neither does Steve. It was before the lot that were on the Pirate Ships, like Balckburn, edmonds, etc, thog some of the early Radio 1 DJs started there. At the time it was the only English speaking pop music station!
BTW we weren't allowed to listen after lights out! It did get me out of trouble though, when My cubey mate & i were the only ones in the dorm who hadn't spoken after lights out when everyone else was caught by the Head! Very Happy Very Happy We hadn't spoken a word cos we were listening to the radio - both illegal, but she didn't ask about anything else Laughing Laughing Laughing

Radio Luxembourg broadcast on 208m on the medium wave and the signal came and went all the time. Jimmy Young, Jimmy Saville, Alan Freeman, Hughie Green, David Jacobs and Kenny Everett all DJd on it at one time or another. As a teenager in the 50's I used to listen whilst doing homework to R.L. when it wasn't a music station. The done thing then was to listen at 7:15 to"Dan Dare, pilot of the future" presented by "Horlicks".

It's nice to have someone here who remembers what I remember! Just checked your profile and you are younger than me but we are of the same 'era'.

I lived in Essex when the pirate radio stations started and some enterprising fishermen at Clacton used to run boat trips round Caroline!

Reading Anne Frank's diary she seems an incredibly modern teenager for someone living in the 1940s. It made me wonder how realistic was the portrayal of the CS girls - were girls really that ignorant of the outside world, and of boys and general growing up etc?

I'm not writing any more until Tues but just want to give you all something to think about! If Fleur's Dad had put his foot down on the whole not seeing your friends thing, then do you think Fleur would have listened to him? Maybe he feels that she needs time away from her friends (who are not bad people remember!) but doesn't want to seem that he is stopping her from seeing them, in case by doing that he looses his close relationship with Fleur! Also maybe the reason her Dad thinks the chalet school is good for her is because its in a different country, somewhere where he knows her mother cannot reach her easily!
I can see there's going to be a lot of debate about Fleur. I think you'll either love her or hate her. But please wait until the end before you make that decision! Fleur's not a bad person she's just confused and different!
Thankyou for all the debate and comments, it's giving me loads of ideas! Laughing

I'm loving this story!

Personally I have to say that from what I've seen so far I like Fleur. The thing I often get irked at is the way the the chalet girls when faced with someone different immediately attempt to convert them into what they believe they should be instead of perhaps learning something new from someone with a different outlook on life.

Have nasty exam tomorrow and am in ranting mood! Twisted Evil

Cazx, I take your point - I hadn't thought of the mother causing problems and agree it might be well to get her out of her reach if he feels that might happen. I'm enjoying this and will be interested to see if Fleur does bring the CS at least some way into the 60's or not.

More action later probably!

Meanwhile Fleur was struggling to get through her first day at the chalet school. The speaking of French and German was no problem to her, her Father being Swiss had made sure that from an early age she was able to speak the languages of her native country. Indeed Fleur felt that her first language was French not English. Fleur was struggling because she was so tired; she had not slept well. Partly due to worrying about whether she would be able to sleep or not and partly because when she had first gone to bed she had not been tired. Fleur also felt self conscious without her make up, she felt that everyone was staring at her, wondering who she was and why she looked so awful.
Fleur wanted to go home, she felt intimidated by all the girls. Amongst the chalet school girls she was a nobody, back home at her grammar school she had been a somebody. She had been crying in the bathroom in the morning and now had puffy red eyes, the chalet girls not really understanding how people could be homesick when at school were kind to Fleur but did not ask her what was wrong. They feared her reaction and what it would be like. Fleur missed her family, her friends and even her old school. But the person she missed most was Nikolai. He was her best friend, they talked for hours every day, she did not know how she would cope not being able to hear his voice. Fleur was scared, how was she going to fit in? The girls here were completely different to her and her way of life.

#86:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Tue Jan 27, 2004 7:13 pm

Ah! Poor Fleur. Think of the culture shock? I hope Nikolai doesn't appear! What a shock that would be for the CS. (It would make a good story though:lol: )

#90:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Tue Jan 27, 2004 10:40 pm

I'm finding it hard to get back into this after a few days away. So sorry if the story goes downhill or I get bored/stuck. Confused

The sixth form common room had an advantage over all the other common rooms in the school, as it was the only one with the record player. Fleur who had known of this before she arrived had consequently brought most of her record collection with her. After prep Fleur was sitting with Ailie, Janice, and Judy in the common room. Fleur was not in the mood to shock her somewhat friends, she just wanted to sit down quietly and listen to music.
“Ailie,” she said listlessly, “Do you think the other girls will mind if I put on some of my music?”
“No. I’m sure they won’t.” Ailie was confused by Fleur, she was so different today from the laughing girl she had been the day before.
Fleur put on her newest Beatles album, which was always guaranteed to make her smile. The other girls raised their eyebrows at her choice but said nothing. Fleur lay down on the sofa and just listened to the music, occasionally moving her feet in time with the beat. Ailie and Janice had never heard music like this before and though at first they had had their doubts about listening to it, they quickly discovered that they liked it. Fleur lay there saying nothing for about twenty minutes until she suddenly sprung to life announcing “I’m bored! I wish there was something fun to do!”
The three other girls glanced at each other. They had the feeling that Fleur had a very different perspective of what was and was not fun to the one they had. But before they said anything Fleur noticed Ailie’s foot moving in time with the music.
Fleur jumped up and pulled Ailie to her feet. “Come on Ailie,” She said a bit bossily, “I know what I’ll do. I’ll teach you to dance properly.”
Ailie who had been wondering what Fleur’s idea of dancing was agreed, and soon the pair were dancing to the music of Rock n’ Roll. Fleur loved to dance and discovered that Ailie was a quick learner, and able to copy her easily enough. They had been dancing for about ten minutes when Felicity Maynard walked in to the room. She watched them dance fascinated by the quick movement of both the dancing and the music. It was Janice who noticed Felicity standing in the doorway first.
“Felicity,” She called out kindly, “what are you doing here?”
“I wanted to speak to Fleur please.” She said a bit shyly.
Fleur turned round on hearing her name and looked at Felicity curiously. “Yes,” She said at last, ”what do you want?”
“Mamma says for you to come to English tea on Saturday if that suits you.”
“Oh ok.” Said Fleur a little taken aback, “I’m sorry I don’t mean to be rude but who is your mother?”
“My Auntie Joey,” Ailie told her, “She was the first pupil at the school and has never really left.”
“So I can tell Mamma that you can come.” Said Felicity.
“Yes, do.” Fleur paused and looked at Felicity thoughtfully, “Do you dance by any chance? I mean properly dance.”
Felicity nodded. “I do ballet.”
“I thought so. You don’t want to dance to this kind of music though I suppose?”
“I don’t know, it looks quite fun.”
Fleur nodded, an idea was forming in the back of her mind of what the girls in this school were like, and how they would cope in real life. Felicity not knowing what else to say left, while Fleur went back to sit down.
“Why does your aunt want me to go to tea with her?” She asked Ailie.
“She has all the new girls to tea with her.” Ailie said airily.
“Is Felicity her eldest daughter?”
“No.” Said Judy excitedly, “She has eleven children, there’s…”
“Hush Judy” Ailie exclaimed, “She’s my aunt and they’re my cousins, I’ll tell Fleur about them. The youngest are twins Phillippa and Geoff, they’re in the kindergarten. Then there’s Cecil, she’s a junior. Felicity is a middle, and her twin Felix is in boarding school in England. Then there are another three boys in school in England, Mike, Charles, and Steve.” Ailie paused for breath.
“But that’s only eight.” Fleur told her.
“I know,” Ailie said, “I was saving the best until last. There are three elder girls, and they’re triplets.”
Fleur did not look as impressed with this news as Ailie expected her to be. “Oh,” She said at last, ”You know my best friend at home she’s one of triplets.”

Did anyone else here see 'That'll teach'em' in the summer. This drabble reminds me very much of that, the meeting of old and modern.

The result of teach'em was that many of the modern girls in particular found it very relaxing to be in such a controlled environment, and many realised the benefits of just being themselves, and having to express themselves without the benefit of make-up or their own clothes. There were some wonderful scenes with Matron - she was so much 'Matey' I considered writing the C4 and suggesting they cast her in any adaptation of CS.

They also became very adept at filling their own time - putting on plays, not relying on tv and so on.

What I meant to start off with was that this drabble is brilliant, and I am totally hooked. Looking forward to more. Please

Fleur intended to spend only one weekend at school. She was spending the next weekend with her Grandparents and she planned to coax them to allow her to come and visit them every weekend. They did not have to collect her she could get the train or her cousin could pick her up. Fleur planned to introduce her cousins to her plan, she was positive that they would sympathise and help her. Fleur was equally sure that the eighteen-year-old boy who lived next to her Grandparents would be a willing ally to her cause.
But Fleur did have at least one weekend at school and she was wondering how the hours would pass by. Friday night was strange for Fleur; it was the first for months where she had not been out to a dance, to a beach or house party or even to the cinema. She found she could not listen to music that night as it reminded her of her friends and of the great time they would be having. She found herself wondering what was happening, was Nikolai out? She hoped Holly was keeping an eye on him if he was. How were Holly, Chloe and Dylan? What was the gossip of the evening, gossip and excitement that she was missing out on. It can be said that Fleur was cross and irritable that night, wishing she was somewhere else.
Saturday morning was strange, in a good way for Fleur, as it was the first Saturday for a long long time that she had woken up without still feeling tired from the night before along with a headache and a sickening feeling at the pit of her stomach. She was cheerful and did not feel envious of how her friends would be feeling at this point. She did some work on post Napoleonic war discontent for history, which was easily her favourite subject before reading some of Pride and Prejudice for English. She would not be able to do it this afternoon as she was going to tea, Ailie was coming too, which pleased Fleur, she would have hated going alone.
It was about three when the pair left the school, Fleur who had stopped thinking about her friends for a bit was back to her usual chatty self.
“What are you so pleased about?” Fleur asked Ailie who was wearing an unusually smug expression on her face, as she met her at the bottom of the stairs. “What did the Abbess tell you? You were gone for ages, I didn’t think you were coming.”
“Oh no I’m coming all right, I’m not missing out on telling Auntie Joey the news.” Ailie giggled delightedly.
“What news?” Exclaimed Fleur.
“You’ll see.” Ailie said mysteriously.
They made there way towards Freudesheim with Fleur coaxing Ailie to tell her the news. Joey was waiting for them at the French windows, “Come in” she called to them.
Once the pair were inside she greeted Fleur first, “You must be Fleur,” She said taking her hand, “How are you finding school? I’m sure you must find it a bit daunting but that will pass quick enough.”
She then turned to Ailie, “Why are you looking at me like that? May I ask?” She said seeing the gleeful look in her niece’s eyes.
“I was just trying to work out if you knew.” Ailie said innocently.
“If I knew what young lady?” Joey asked raising her eyebrows.
“If you knew that I was an Aunt.” Ailie adopted a proud expression to her face.
Joey staggered backwards and fell into a chair. “Sybil,” She said at last, “Is she alright?”
“Oh yes” Ailie said airily, “Mummy phoned just now and I asked her if I could tell you. She said I could cause you would only make fun of her for being a Grandmother.”
“Well what did she have?” Joey demanded.
“A girl, and you’ll never guess what they’ve named her!”
“What?” Said Joey sharply, “I hope it’s something sensible and not anything outrageous.”
“Oh no, in fact I’m sure you’ll be pleased Auntie Jo,” Ailie said earnestly albeit with a glint in her eyes, “The new baby, my niece, your great niece is called…”
“Ailie hurry up for the sake of my sanity, we don’t want to be here all day.”
“Alright,” Ailie said trying hard not to laugh, “Sybs has named her Malvina!”
Ailie burst out laughing at the agonised expression on her aunt’s face and turning to a confused looking Fleur explained, “When Sybs was born Auntie wanted her to be named Malvina, but Mummy hated it.”
Fleur smiled slowly, before beginning to laugh at the expression on Mrs Maynards face.
It was over tea that Fleur really began to talk to Mrs Maynard, before she had been quite happy to sit there quietly listening to Ailie’s animated chatter.
“Fleur,” Joey said when Ailie had gone upstairs to the nursery with her adopted cousin Claire, “Do you know that if you ever find school to much for you then you can always come here.”
Fleur shifted uncomfortably in her seat, she did not want to be lectured to.
“Everyone understands that you must find it difficult to settle down in a new school, but you will even if you don’t want to now, eventually love the Chalet School Fleur. I know you’re used to a very different environment and are it seems very mature for your age but remember that not every girl is like you. You must try to respect their outlook on life my dear, just as they must respect yours. Try to fit in with them, I’m sure it would be easier for you to fit in with them than for them to fit in with you.”
Fleur muttered something non-commitable as she began to get a clearer picture of what the average chalet girl was like in her mind.

Feel rather disappointed that Joey is giving advice that Fleur must fit in and conform. Hope Fleur doesn't do so! Did Sybil really call her daughter that? Shocked

But Joey was bound to say something like that, really, after all, she is the spirit of the Chalet School.
I can't imagine Fleur taking too much notice though, not yet anyway.
And good for Sybs.

ROFL at Sybil calling her daughter Malvina!!! Did anyone else find Joey came over just the teeniest bit sinister in that? I don't think there's much danger of Fleur taking her words too much to heart though - I hope not, anyway!

I wonder what image of the average CS girl Fleur is getting in her mind!

I think this will get more and more interesting as time goes by.

Malvina? Sybs must have done that to spite Madge who didn't like it!

I do wonder what Fleur thinks of the average CS girl. And whether her plan to spend time with her grandparents will be allowed.

I feel quite sorry for poor baby Malvina but what a stroke of genius ROFL

I didn't find what Joey said that serious, although I can't see the school really wanting the girls to understand Fleur's way of life in return for her understanding theirs.

soapbox What a stupid comment! You don't change you beliefs and attitudes for the convenience of others! What if the school was a school of KKK clansmen, if I went there I should agree with KKK since it would be easier than convincing them not to believe the KKK ideology! fume swear

Okay so the CS are not clansmen and there are not huge ideological issues here, but the point remains.

Fleur was still reading Catcher in the Rye, despite what Janice had said to her. It was one of her favourite books and she kept on re-reading her favourite scenes for security, during her first few days at school. Holden could have walked straight into her group of friends and fitted in perfectly and for Fleur he was a link to life back home. It was during English that Miss Annersley discovered what Fleur was reading.
Fleur was searching in her desk for a pen and had thrown Catcher in the Rye on to the floor. Miss Annersley walking past had picked it up, when she saw what the book was she pursed her lips.
“Fleur,” She said at last, “Where did you get this book?” The rest of the class looked up curiously, and were shocked to see the look of disapproval on their Headmistresses face.
“I brought it with me.” Fleur said, holding her hand out for the book. Miss Annersley did not give it to her though. “Oh please give it back to me.” Fleur implored, it had been a present from Nikolai and that was one of the reasons she loved it so much.
“No Fleur I won’t give it back to you.” Miss Annersley said somewhat regretfully.
“Why not?” Fleur demanded, as the rest of the class gasped never had they seen anyone question Miss Annersley in such a way.
“Because Fleur, I don’t believe this book is suitable for a sixteen year old girl to be reading.” Miss Annersley spoke softly, she was trying to avoid a scene.
“Why is it unsuitable?”
“I don’t think school girls should be reading about the issues which this book raises.”
“But the issues are realistic and true to life. That book shows how the world really is, and that’s what none of you people here seem to realise. There’s a big world out there and if you don’t know how that world works then you’ve had it. The girls in this school are being treated as if they were living in the 1930’s and not the 1960’s, they’re going to find it so hard to adapt to the real world.” Fleur had not meant to loose her temper but now she had she just kept on going. “Do you realise that this school is producing young women who spurn away from the opportunities of this day and age. They hold the attitudes of thirty years ago because that’s what you install in them, what are they going to do with their life’s apart from get married and have lots of children. They need to be given greater freedom now rather than later, and should be allowed to read what they want to read and do what they want to do instead of you making decisions for them.” Fleur paused for breath her eyes flaming.
Miss Annersley taking advantage of the momentary silence said coolly, “That’s enough Fleur, after this lesson you’ll come to my office.”

Fleur has gone Twisted Evil Quidditch , it's very Crying or Very sad

If miss Annersley talks to her seriously, and listens to her as well that could be a very interesting interview. Fleur will need to learn to put her point of view without losing her temper though.

#118:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 12:41 pm

This is really showing the CS up as old-fashioned. I really can't understand what is wrong with 'Catcher in the Rye'. I read it whan I was fourteen, getting it out of the school library.

Our school library also had a copy of 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' and we were all free to read it. There's nothing like censorship to make my blood boil.

#119:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 5:17 pm

I just picked Cathcher in the Rye cause it does deal with quite complex issues eg mental illness, which I didnt think the chalet school would like. Also on the big read I think Ruby Wax said that it was very controversial when it was published! Shocked
But I also couldn't think of any other books which the CS would dissapprove of and Fleur would want to read.
And yeah think you will be seeing the interview! Very Happy

Yes, 'Catcher' does deal with complex issues, but the CS prides itself on teaching girls to deal with complex issues, 'arguing from cause to effect' so 'Catcher' is not the worst book that Fleur could read. I could understnd it if she had been reading 'Forever Amber' or Henry Miller.

Hopes this is ok Confused

Fleur knew she had gone over the top. She had not meant to, she had just got frustrated that the Chalet School was trying to control her life. She believed that everything she had said to be true but she knew that she should not have said them and that by saying them she had caused trouble for herself. Trouble which could have been avoided.
Fleur followed Miss Annersley to her study silently, she did not know what her punishment would be but she was sure she would have a punishment.
“Fleur,” Miss Annersley said when they were sitting in her study, “Was it really necessary for that outburst in class?”
Fleur looked into her headmistresses clear blue eyes and said, “No, it wasn’t Miss Annersley.”
“Then why did you say those things Fleur?”
“Because I was mad, and I wanted the truth to hurt you all.” Fleur was ashamed of her words but that did not mean that she did not still believe them to be true.
“Why were you mad Fleur?” Miss Annersley asked gently.
“Because I wanted to continue living the way I’ve always lived, reading what I want and doing what I want. Because I’m homesick and want to be back home with my friends. Because I’m jealous of my friends and brother getting to carry on as always while I’m stuck here. There are a thousand reasons why Miss Annersley.”
“Fleur you must realise that we are trying to help you here, we want you to enjoy your time here.”
“I don’t need any help.” Fleur said heatedly, “Why would I need help?”
“Fleur don’t work yourself into a temper,” Miss Annersley said gently, “I meant we were trying to help you to settle down here.”
“Sorry,” Fleur said feeling small.
“Now Fleur did you really mean those things you said?”
“Yes I’m afraid I did.” Fleur despite herself was actually beginning to like Miss Annersley, she had not subjected her to a lecture and seemed to be understanding.
“Fleur you must realise that the reason that parents send their daughters to this school is due to the traditions we have, and the way we run the school, they like the ideas we install in our girls.”
“Miss Annersley,” Fleur said earnestly, “I do take your point of view but I think it would be better if there was a greater freedom here and that the girls weren’t wrapped up in cotton wool so much. If not for the whole school then for the two sixths at least. I wouldn’t have said what I said if I hadn’t thought it to be true.”
“Fleur we can’t change the way we run the school just because you say so.” Miss Annersley was surprised that Fleur was being so calm and collected she had half expected another scene.
“I know.” Said Fleur. “And I also know that I should not have lost my temper, and I’m truly sorry for it.”
Miss Annersley looked at her, “You realise though that I can’t let this be overlooked.”
“Oh yes of course Miss Annersley. If you did then others might copy, I need to be made an example of.” Fleur was resigned to her fate.
“Very well, you will do extra prep for me on Pride and Prejudice and will for the rest of the week go to bed when the middles go.”
Fleur thinking that she had got off lightly, she had been dreading being told that she was not allowed to visit her grandparents said, “Very well Miss Annersley.” She made her way towards the door and before opening it said, “Please believe me that I am sorry and that I won’t let anything like this happen again.”
Miss Annersley nodded and said, “Go to matron for your break, I have to speak to the rest of the sixth. I’ll send for you when I’ve finished.”

Here is some of the girls reaction to Fleur. Don't know if I'm happy with it though...

“Where’s Fleur gone now?” Asked Judy that evening.
“She mentioned something about practising her guitar.” Ailie said lazily looking up from a magazine Fleur had leant her.
“What did you two make of her outburst earlier?” Asked Janice curiously.
“Well, I was quite shocked,” Ailie admitted slowly, “But thinking about I suppose it was to be expected, giving that we’re not what she’s used to.”
“I can understand why she said those things.” Judy said shrugging her shoulders.
“Judy,” Exclaimed Janice, “Why? How?”
“I said I understood not that I agreed Jan,” Judy said coldly, “Well think about it, she’s never been in a environment like this before. She’s probably finding it hard to adjust to the situation. Mind you I think a lot of what she said to be true, I just think she should have said them differently.”
“I understand what Judy means,” Ailie put in thoughtfully, “And I suppose Fleur must be finding it hard after having all that freedom back home to come here and have your whole day structured. I think she also misses her boyfriend and brother a lot. She was saying a few days ago how much she missed hearing a male perspective of things.”
“What do you think Janice?” Judy asked.
“I think she shouldn’t have said anything at all. She should have kept what she thought of us to her-self.” Janice paused before adding, “She’s very confident isn’t she, I mean nobody has ever cheeked Miss Annersley like that before.”
“No.” The other two agreed.
“Why do you think what she said to be true Judy?” Janice asked.
“Because well… Because when you think about it some things here are very dated. I mean look at what music they play for us when we dance, and well at times I feel that I can’t express my views because they won’t be approved of. I guess I feel smothered in some ways.” Judy did not look at her friends but if she did she would have seen Janice frowning, while Ailie was nodding her fair head in muted agreement.

It may not be a bad thing if Cazx's presence is going to lead the others in the sixth to think a little more broadly, they will soon be going out into the world after all, and it's likely that many of them have home lives which are equally as sheltered as school.

Erm - magic? Or perhaps it's an evil plot of Joey's to make sure she is thoroughy imbued with the ethos of the school and will therefore turn Fleur into a 'real' Chalet girl without delay Exclamation

Here's some insight to Fleur's relationship to her group of friends back home!

Letter from Fleur to Nikolai,

Dearest darling Nikolai,
No I have not gone mad by calling you dearest darling but Dear Nikolai looks so cold on paper!
How is life back home? Are you missing me as much as I’m missing you?
I can’t decide whether I like the chalet school or not, one minute I don’t mind it but then the next I hate it here. However much I do like it though doesn’t stop me from wishing that I was back home with you and all the others. I had a confrontation yesterday with the head, you know how I can’t stop my-self from speaking my mind when I feel strongly about something. It was all about Catcher in the Rye. Apparently the Chalet School don’t like the ideas of Catcher, I then proceeded to tell Miss A exactly what I thought of her precious school, which I shouldn’t really have done! Some of the girls have been funny with me since but I think that one or two of them do see my point of view. But oh Nikolai I do wish that you were here or that I was actually back home. I don’t belong here, I belong with you. It’s really hard trying to fit in here. Half of me wants to try and fit in but the other half doesn’t cause these girls are not a bit like me. There are a few girls who I think could have the potential to be like us lot. Two of my kind of friends, Ailie and Judy, could if they let themselves fit right in at home. The only problem is that Ailie’s mother was the woman who started the school so she might have all these issues over loyalty etc. But the girl who I’d like to see most as part of our crowd is Janice, she would look very artistic if she wore her hair down instead of in plaits, I can imagine Dylan thinking her to be perfection (you know how he always falls for arty girls who are usually two faced-not that Janice is). She however does not approve of me I think. She’s nice but at times she says something or looks at me in a certain way to make me think that she does not agree or accept anything that I am saying.
Oh Nikolai why did I have to go to a boarding school, and to a boarding school in Switzerland as well! When I think of what we are missing out on being separated by hundreds of miles. Do you remember everything Nikolai, I do? Of course I know you do but I was just wondering, do you remember…(Several pages omitted consisting of Fleur reminiscing over her and Nikolai’s relationship).
Write to me soon my Nikolai, tell me won’t you if you think I’ve changed,
Loving you forever and ever,
Fleur
XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx

Letter to Fleur from her brother Christian,

Dear Baby Sister,
How are things at school? I have to say that everyone misses you back home, including I’m surprised to say me, you know I’m kidding! Thought I would write to tell you some good news, my eighteenth as you know falls over half term and I’ve decided to come out to Switzerland to celebrate! You’ll be on half term then won’t you? Tante Melanie has said that I can have a party at her house which according to Marc and Magali means we get the house all to ourselves while Dad, Dominique, Tante Melanie and the rest go to the Grandparents for the evening. The only bad thing is that none of the group from back home will be there apart from you and me but the Swiss crew are almost as much of a laugh. Make sure to invite some girls from your school, the more people there the better! Paul is going to come to I think, you don’t mind do you? Keep your chin up at school, just think it won’t be long before you see Dad and I, And then before you know it Christmas will be upon you and you’ll see Nikolai and the rest again.
See you soon,
Christian x

Letter to Fleur from her best friend Holly

Hey Fleur,
Just writing you a short note to see how you are! Nothing interesting has happened since you’ve gone, I think that is probably because you are the centre of the action on the home front though. School is the same as ever, meaning Chloe, Kitty, Daisy and I are still getting into trouble for seeking next door into the boys school at lunchtime. But I think Miss Thomas’ tellings off have become much worse since you’ve gone, you were always able to reason with her so well. I’m sure Daisy could reason to, but she is always off in a daze in the middle of writing some song lyrics, to remember to stand up for us.
Since you’ve gone Nikolai has become so quiet. Last Friday when we went out he spent the whole night frowning in the corner of the room drinking, when I went to speak to him all he would talk about was you and how much he missed you. He’s hardly smiled since you’ve gone and me and Chloe think he’s becoming the brooding James Dean rebel that he’s always threatened to be!
Dylan and Chloe are fine, apart from some other skanky art girl messing Dylan around-when will he learn not to be so nice and trusting? Chloe said she was going to write to you but had not got around to it (you know what she’s like!).
Hope to hear from you soon, tell me more about what the girls at school are like?
Missing you loads,
Holly xxx

In the original uncut version of Wrong, the forbidden book is Gone With The Wind (in the PB it is Forever Amber.). *chuckles*

Echoes Chloe's post and adds a request for more, as Chloe seems to have forgotten. Easily slips your mind when you've posted on practically EVERY thread in C&D this morning, doesn't it Chloe??

I like that. Fleur sounding quite balanced and 'reading' the girls rather well. I liked the letter from Holly and the insight that Fleur is a leader of the crowd and that she has a reputation for being articulate.

Bit worried about Nikolai going James Deanish and hope that doesn't bode ill for the future - now have a mental picture of him as James Dean, leather jacket and all!

I'm a bit concerned about half term. Shocked

LOL, Kate. That shows the changes over the years. I wonder what the 2004 equivalent would be?

Fleur wanted to be friends with Janice. It was not that they were not friends but Fleur felt that at times Janice rather resented her being there. But then there had been many other times when Janice was completely nice to her. Still Fleur decided that it would be for the best if she a chat with Janice.
“Janice,” She asked one bright sunny morning, “Will you be my partner on the walk today?”
“I’m partners with Adrienne, I thought you were walking with Ailie anyway.” Janice said looking at Fleur carefully.
“Oh I was,” Said Fleur, “But I asked her if she’d mind if we could swap. She didn’t mind, Ailie is so nice like that isn’t she.”
“Yes,” Said Janice slowly. Secretly Janice was annoyed that Fleur had already asked Ailie to swap, it was as if she assumed that she, Janice would automatically want to walk with her. “I’m sorry Fleur but I’ve said I’d walk with Adrienne, I can’t go back on my word.”
“Oh please Janice.” Fleur implored, “Please ask her to swap.”
“No Fleur I won’t.” Janice said firmly, “Why do you want to walk with me so much anyway?” She added suspiciously.
“I just really needed to talk to you that’s all.” Fleur said vaguely, beginning to walk away, “But if you don’t want to walk with me then I suppose there’s no point…”
Janice watching Fleur walk away felt curious, she wondered what it was that Fleur wanted to talk to her about, “Fleur wait,” She called out curiosity over coming her, “I’ll ask Adrienne if she’ll mind so very much if we do swap.”
Fleur turned around smiling, “Oh thank you Janice, it’s awfully nice of you.”
They had been walking for a while and Fleur had not mentioned just what it was that she had wanted to talk to Janice about.
“Fleur what did you want to talk about so much?” Janice asked at last rather impatiently, beginning to think Fleur had just said that to get her to partner her.
“I wanted to ask you why you are so funny with me at times?” Fleur said calmly.
“I don’t know what you mean.” Janice said a touch indignantly.
“Yes you do, and you know you do. I want to know why you sometimes give me a look that makes me feel as if I am the strangest, maddest most immoral creature ever.”
Janice did not say anything at first, she was thinking of what Fleur had just said and whether it was true or not.
“Alright Fleur,” She said at last her grey eyes flashing loosing their usually dreamy look, “I’ll tell you why you are the strangest, maddest most immoral creature that I have ever met.”

Thanks Cazx, I admire the way Fleur faces things head on. It may make it difficult in the short term but is likely to avoid the sort of festering sullenness that can cause long term problems. I hope Janice can be as open and also that they will listen to one another.

Looking forward to hearing what they say.

Thanks Cazxx. Just caught up again. I loved the letters, it was nice to hear from people who knew Fleur before the CS. It'll be interesting to hear Janice's views too though. Fleur was a little overbearing in the way she approached her, comes from being a leader I suppose, but I hope Janice and her come to some sort of an understanding.

#164:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Mon Feb 02, 2004 10:18 pm

Not convinced about whether this is very convincing, Confused
Please tell me what you honestly think.

Janice did not say anything for a few moments she was trying to get her mind together. “I think you’re the strangest, maddest most immoral creature I’ve ever met because,” She said slowly, “Because you have the nerve to come to a new school and tell us that everything we are used to and believe in is wrong. Because you tell all of this to our head, who we all love, making her look like a dated fool. Because you have come here with your I’m so grown up attitude making out that you are better than all of us and know more than the rest of us. Because you have come here and made me look like someone who disapproves of fun, and finally because since you’ve come here Ailie and Judy have changed and you are the reason for it. They are trying to impress you and I don’t like the way they are changing before my eyes.”
Fleur looking as if she was quite enjoying herself said, “Well now we have got all of this out into the open we have to fix it. We have to be friends Janice.”
Janice opened her mouth in astonishment had Fleur paid any attention to what she had just said, “What if I don’t want to be your friend?”
“Oh don’t say that Janice.” Fleur said mournfully, her moods seemed to change within seconds. “You must be my friend.”
“Why?” Janice asked suspiciously.
“Because I want you to be.” Fleur paused before adding, “You know I’m named after Fleur in the Forsyte Saga and in one of the books she says, “When I want things I want things. And when I don't get them I’m not safe”, I think that I’m a lot like her in that respect.”
Janice turned around and looked Fleur in the eye and said steadily, “Are you threatening me?”
“Oh no, not at all.” Fleur cried out in horror, “You have to believe me, I was not threatening you.”
“Hmm,” Was all Janice said, before saying, “Why do you act the way you do? As if you are better than all of us."
“Do I really act like that?” Fleur asked anxiously. “Well I suppose it’s how I normally act at home with my friends. I suppose we are quite mature for our years and being at school here makes me feel as if I’m fourteen again. I don’t mean to though honestly.”
“Then why did you have to say that we were going to have a hard job adapting to life in the real world, if you weren’t saying it to show that you are better than us.”
“I lost my temper. I know I shouldn’t have said what I did in that context but it doesn’t mean that I think I was wrong. I was honestly speaking the truth Janice. What do you want to do after school?”
“I want to go to Art College,” said Janice not quite understanding where this question had come from.
“My best friends brother wants to go to Art College, he wants to be a photographer. He’s really cool but so quiet, some of his and Nikolai’s friends though they can be really horrible, stringing loads of girls along at once. I used to think that Nikolai was like that, it took me five months before I trusted him enough to go out with him.” Fleur paused she had got rather off the point but if she continued talking then Janice might see her differently. “I’ll tell you something Janice that I’ve told no one, not even Holly, I have really low self esteem. You see when I met Nikolai I could not understand why he liked me, he’s total perfection you see. I thought he was just saying it and did not really mean it. I finally believed him and went out with him but now I’m here I’m really worried that he’ll forget about me and find some other girl. Part of me wants to be expelled so I can go back home and be with him, because if anything bad happens between us then my world will collapse. Nikolai is the only person in the whole entire world who knows and understands exactly what my mother’s leaving did to me. Her leaving is the reason why my self-esteem is so low I think. When she came back it was Nikolai who helped me through everything, and if he meets someone else then who will I have to talk to me.” Fleur had silent tears running down her face. “Maybe I act the way I do because I’m trying to hide the fact that I have such low self esteem and feel so insecure.”
“Fleur,” Janice said gently putting her arm around Fleur, “I think you’re really pretty, I’m sure Nikolai does to.”
“Thank-you Janice,” Fleur murmured, “Sorry for burdening you with all this.”
“It’s fine honestly,” Janice told her gently before adding with a smile, “What else are friends for?”

#177:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Tue Feb 03, 2004 10:38 pm

Thanks for all the lovely things you said about the last post Laughing

Fleur and Janice ignored their different views after that walk and concentrated on being friends. Fleur began to appreciate some of the policies of the Chalet School, whereas at first she had disliked the idea of daily walks now she did not mind, as it was good for her complexion! Yet Fleur still felt that spending all of her time at the school would be just to much and late every Friday afternoon was collected by some relative or friend and taken to her Grandparents returning to the school on Sunday evening. Janice also tried to embrace Fleur’s way of living more openly than she had previously done, and it was not difficult for Fleur to persuade her along with Ailie and Judy to come to her brother Christian’s eighteenth birthday party.
It was Abendessen on Sunday evening and Ailie, Judy, and Janice were eagerly awaiting Fleur’s arrival, to tell her that they had permission to visit her over half term, meaning they could go to the party.
“Where on earth has she got to?” Judy asked looking towards the door, “She’s usually back before now.”
“It’s most likely that she’s been delayed by the rain,” Said Ailie biting into a potato, “It’s been bucketing down all day.”
Janice facing the door uttered a little moan and said “Oh girls look, she’s going to be in so much trouble.”
Fleur had just walked in together with two thoroughly drenched looking boys, all three looked a bit worse for wear. Fleur however had gone further than this, instead of wearing the school uniform she had been wearing when leaving on Friday she was now wearing clothes that none of the other Chalet girls possessed. A very bright purple corduroy mini skirt, thick black tights with a large hole just above the knees, a short sleeved shirt scattered with colourful polka dots which was also missing two buttons, a knee length pink rain coat, and knee high black boots.
Fleur made her way towards the staff table paying no attention to the open mouthed looks she was attracting from the younger girls, the older girls being to good mannered to do so. The two boys hovered in the doorway.
“Miss Annersley,” Fleur said confidently, “I want to apologise about my appearance. But you see last night I went out with my cousins and their friends and got locked out of my Grandparents, where my school uniform was. So I had no other choice but to come back looking like this.”
Miss Annersley looking into Fleur’s eye’s said quietly, “Where were your Grandparents Fleur? Couldn’t they have let you in?”
“They’ve gone to Germany for a few days. I was staying there by my self, didn’t Grandmere tell you?”
“No.” Said Miss Annersley shortly, “Why are you back so late anyway?”
“We didn’t leave till three. It was very stressful you see being locked out and I just didn’t know what to do. Then the car broke down, and we had to wait for two and a half hours for that to be repaired and spent all the money we had on us on the repairs. We haven’t eaten since lunch, and we are all so hungry! Do you mind if I don’t change till after I’ve eaten I’m starved. Oh and Marc and Antoine” Fleur waved a hand towards the two boys at the door, “Can they eat here, they have no money to buy food on the way home you see.”
Miss Annersley raised her eyebrows thinking to herself that Fleur’s dominating character was probably the result of being spoilt at home. “Yes alright Fleur,” She said at last, “But after Abendessen you change straight away and come to my study.”
Fleur had guessed she might have to go to the heads study said, “Of cause Miss Annersley,” and walked over to Ailie and the others gesturing to the boys to follow her.
Miss Wilson, the head of St Mildreds, turned to her friend and said in a hushed voice, “Who on earth was that? She can’t be one of the girls surely!”

How brave of her to face Miss A like that. Had her grandparents locked her out and refused to open up or had they gone away?

Wonder what miss A will do about it all. Love Miss Wilson's comment.

I think Mrs A. is going to have to put her foot down now, feeling rather sorry if Fleur, but if her grandparents really are away, I'm sure she wouldn't have been allowed to go to stay at their house.
Also loved that line of Bill's.

Looking forward to seeing how the Abbess deals with this one!

Loved Miss Wilson's comment! Are the CS girls going to get to talk to Marc and Antoine? That would be almost as interesting as seeing what Miss A is going to say/do to Fleur now.

#187:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 8:59 pm

Fleur sat down next to Janice, Antoine sat next to her on the other side, while Marc sat opposite his cousin.
“Hey,” She said lazily to her friends, “This is my cousin Marc and his friend Antoine. You two these are Ailie, Judy and Janice.”
“Were you really locked out last night, Fleur?” Ailie asked eagerly.
“Yeah… it was so stupid of me, it was the spare key you see so there was no way I could have got my uniform unless I broke in.”
“Couldn’t you have borrowed some clothes from your cousin?” Said the practical Janice.
The two boys began to laugh but a glare from Fleur quickly shut them up.
“Well no, you see Tante Melanie would have then found out that I’d been out and I’d have been in such big trouble. I promised my Father that I wouldn’t go to any parties until Christian’s eighteenth, as part of my punishment. Tante Melanie knows all about it and she would have killed me for breaking my word.”
“She’ll probably have guessed that you were out when she finds out that you got locked out anyway.” Marc muttered gloomily, “And then we’ll all be for it.”
“No, she won’t find out.” Fleur told him firmly. “Your going to tell her that I forgot to turn the heating off or something and that you had to go and turn it off and left the keys in the house, ok.”
“She’ll probably won’t believe it but I’ll give it a go.” Marc said after thinking it through.
“What was your punishment for?” Judy asked curiosity overcoming her.
“Her punishment was for running away for a few days and coming back in the middle of the night dead drunk and with Nikolai.” Antoine spoke for the first time, his voice was low but there was a sneer in it when Nikolai’s name had passed his lips.
“Thank-you Antoine for telling everyone my life story.” Fleur said sarcastically.
“But Fleur that wasn’t your life story, it wasn’t even one week of your life story.” Antoine said innocently.
Ailie thinking it best if she changed the subject said, “Was the party good?”
“Yeah it was actually, we didn’t get back until about three though, and then I thought I’d try and find a open window to climb through to get into my Grandparents house. There wasn’t one of course.”
“You only did that because you’d been drinking.” Marc said laughing suddenly making his previously worried face attractive. “When did you become such a light weight though Fleur? You were never like that before.”
“It’s probably because I haven’t had a drink since August.” Fleur remarked, “I’ve been so good haven’t I?”
“Oh very.” Said Antoine mocking her.
“Where did you spend the night then?” Janice questioned.
“Over Antoine’s. His parents had gone to a wedding luckily, so Marc and I stayed there.”
“Did your Grandparents really let you stay on your own?” It was Judy’s turn to ask Fleur a question.
“Umm well kind of…” Fleur paused, “Grandmere said it was fine by her as long as the school agreed. I knew they wouldn’t so I just didn’t tell them, why should they say that I couldn’t stay on my own when my Grandparents were prepared to let me?”
Ailie and Judy grinned at each other, they thought it would be marvellous fun to stay in their house’s on their own. Janice feeling that Fleur had done wrong did not say anything more on the subject, remaining quiet for a few minutes during which Marc began to talk to Ailie. Janice did not pay attention to what was going on around her until Fleur nudged her saying, “Is everything alright Jan? I’ve been trying to talk to you for ages.”
Janice jerked back to life saying, “Oh I’m fine honestly. You’ve two buttons missing on your shirt you know, Matey would kill you if that was your uniform.”
“Ah, that would be Nikolai’s fault I presume.” Antoine said grinning ruthlessly at Fleur as he took a packet of cigarettes out of his pocket.
Fleur glared at him and muttered a few well-chosen words for his hearing only before saying, “For God’s sake Antoine put those disgusting diseased things away, you can smoke them in a minute when you’ve gone.”
“I take it that that’s a hint for us to leave then.”
“Yes it is!” said Fleur loosing her patience, she had also noticed that Miss Annersley was shooting looks in the direction of Marc and Ailie at regular intervals. “It’s time for you to go, and time for me to go and get changed, before my next confrontation with the Abbess.”
She walked them to the front door; “I’ll see you next week for half term.” She said to Marc.
“Yes, it’s good that your friends can come to Christians party isn’t it?”
“What they can come?”
“Yes Ailie was telling me just now.”
Fleur said nothing being to busy thinking, she just pushed Marc and Antoine out of the door before rushing upstairs to her dormitory to change into her uniform.

Here's some more, not sure if all of it works though...

“Well Hilda, are you going to tell me about this new girl in lower sixth.” Asked Miss Wilson, who was known to the school at large as Bill.
“She’s called Fleur Matieux,” Miss Annersley said in a somewhat dull voice, “Sir Jem recommended the school to her Father after Fleur spent the summer performing exploits that seemed to get wilder and wilder. I can honestly say that I’ve never dealt with anyone like her in all my days as a teacher. On the first day of term she arrived plastered in Make up, then about two weeks later when I told her she could not read Catcher in the Rye she lost her temper and treated the whole of the lower sixth to a rant about how dated the school is, and now you’ve just witnessed her latest!”
Miss Wilson her eyes wide open in surprise said, “She seems quite a handful. She doesn’t look as if she should be in school, she looks like a university undergraduate and has the confidence to be one.”
“You’ll be surprised to hear Nell that she’s not seventeen until July.”
“But I would have presumed that she was seventeen already seeing as she looks so grown up. What do the other girls think of her?”
“I don’t really know,” Miss Annersley sighed, “She’s friendly with Ailie Russell and her crowd, her Janice and Judy are going to spend some of half term with her in Geneva. If Madge wasn’t so worried about Sybil then I’d advise her to change her mind about allowing Ailie to go. I can’t simply tell them they can’t go, they have parental consent.”
“Is Sybil still not herself then?” Miss Wilson asked in concern.
“Sadly yes, apparently she’s got very little energy and nothing interests her not even baby Malvina. Madge is going to fly out to Australia one day next week.” Miss Annersley paused, “Oh I’m sure those three will be fine over half term, Fleur’s Father and Grandparents should be there all the time anyway.”
Before Miss Wilson could reply there was knock at the door and after Miss Annersley’s call of “Enter” Fleur walked into the room. She curtsied to her head, thinking that if she did not then it would be just another sin against her name. She had changed into her uniform and tried to look her most angelic while waiting for Miss Annersley to speak.
“Fleur,” She began seriously, “I want you to tell me the truth, did your Grandmother really write to me about you spending this weekend on your own in their house.”
Fleur knew she was in a no win situation so decided to tell the truth. “No she did not Miss Annersley. She said that she was prepared to let me stay on my own as long as you were. I was supposed to ask for your permission but didn’t because I knew you’d say no.”
“I’m disappointed in you Fleur,” Miss Annersley said slowly, “You deliberately lied to us and abused your Grandmother’s trust in you. How do I know that you won’t do anything like this again or haven’t done anything like it before.”
“I won’t and I haven’t.” Mumbled Fleur who was trying not to cry she loved her Grandmother dearly and being told she had abused her trust had upset her greatly.
“Did you stop to think what would happen if you had an accident in the house or if something went wrong.” Miss Wilson spoke for the first time, “Did you realise that it would be the school who would be held responsible (I know this could possibly not be true but it sounds good! Caz) and who would have received bad press about it.”
“No,” Said Fleur blinking back the tears, she felt about ten years old and not her usual grown up confident self. “Please forgive me, I did not think it was lying. You never asked you see.” Fleur knew this would do her little good but felt she had to try and defend herself somehow.
“That does not mean that you deceived us of what your plans for the weekend were Fleur. You do realise how grave this matter is, I can’t overlook it.” Miss Annersley wanted to give Fleur a shock in the hope that some aspects of her character would be reformed.
Fleur had a somewhat vague idea that this could be a hint that she was going to be expelled and let her tears fall.
“Now Fleur,” Miss Annersley said gently, “Will you please stop crying. I think it would be for the best if you spent the next two days in the San by yourself. You can do your lessons there. Your very distressed I can see so I think a few days by yourself will do both you and the other girls good. Now go and see Matron, and tell her that you’re to stay with her until I’ve spoken to her.”
Fleur shuffled out of the study and Miss Annersley turned to her friend a worried look on her face, “You don’t think I was to harsh on her do you? She looked so pitiful just then.”
“No I think it’ll be best for everyone if she has a few days to think over what she’s done.” Miss Wilson said frowning slightly.
“What’s the matter Nell?” Miss Annersley asked seeing something was bothering her friend.
“Fleur,” Bill said slowly, “she reminds me of someone but I can’t for the life of me think who.”

i'm not taking the mick but since i thought of 'Adrienne' I now have the mental image of Fleur and Robin being related-Robin escaping convent life and donning a biker jacket anyone? Shocked

Here's a short piece of story am to tired to write more! You've got a reluctant mention of Fleur's familiarity and a possible hint! Laughing

It was a quieter and more subdued Fleur who returned to school on Wednesday. She buried herself in work and did not try to attract attention to herself. The only people she really talked to were Ailie, Judy and Janice, she was friendly to the other girls but did not volunteer to give them any information about what had happened that in the heads study or what the events of that weekend had involved. When half term came around Fleur discovered herself to be at the top of the form lists, she was not it can be said surprised by this as in her old school it had either been her or her friend Daisy top. Fleur for all her bohemian ways was very ambitious and wanted to go to Cambridge.
To the great relief of Fleur Miss Annersley had not forbidden Ailie, Judy and Janice from visiting her during halfterm, although this was probably because she did not realise that they would be attending Christian’s eighteenth. The two sixths were going to a small town close to Geneva for half term and it had been arranged that Fleur would meet them in a popular café at one in the afternoon on the third day off the half term break.
Miss Wilmot went with the girls to meet Fleur, they had been sitting in the café for ten minutes when Fleur strolled in through the door, talking in rapid French to a tall good looking boy who had dark brown hair covering his face. Following them was another boy who looked liked Fleur with the same curly brown and brown eyes.
“Oh you’re here already.” Fleur exclaimed in delight. “Well why don’t you finish and then we can get a move on.”
Miss Wilmot had not had much to do with Fleur, as that young lady did not take maths. She had heard Miss Wilson say that Fleur reminded her of someone she had met long ago but did not have the faintest idea of who it was. Nobody else, not the staff, or Joey thought she was familiar but Fleur’s breezy faintly bossy manner in the café was strangely familiar to Nancy.
“By the way,” Fleur said, “These are Christian,” She indicated the taller of the two boys, “And Paul, my brothers,” She paused then added as an afterthought, “Paul is my twin. You two these are Miss Wilmot, one of the mistresses at my school, and my friends Ailie, Judy and Janice.”
Christian pushing his hair out of his eyes said “Hey,” while Paul who was rather in the background said “Nice to meet you.”
Miss Wilmot feeling that she was not wanted said her goodbyes and left, as the door closed behind her Fleur turned to her friends and said with a wicked grin on her face, “Right now she’s gone we can let the fun begin!”

Here's somemore, no clues here though! Laughing Maybe more later...

“What are the plans for tonight then Fleur?” Judy asked eagerly slipping an arm through Fleur’s as they walked outside.
“Well Grandmere is cooking a birthday meal for Christian so we all have to eat that before the party can begin. We should finish it by nine though and then after that we’ll go down to Tante Melanie’s. The grown ups are staying at my Grandparents so the house will be free, I suppose the party will get going at around ten. God knows when it’ll finish, last summer Nikolai had a house party and none of us went to bed before six in the morning. We watched the sun go up it was so romantic.” Fleur sighed dreamily, not noticing the worried looks of her friends.
“Fleur the way you talk about Nikolai makes you sound so sappy.” Paul told her severely, he was finding it hard to have the special twin relationship that other twins had with Fleur. It did not help matters that Paul did not like Nikolai.
“It does not.” Fleur said glaring at him, “Anyway you know nothing about it so there.”
Christian rolled his eyes, he was much more laid back about things than Fleur and the re-emergence of his mother and lost siblings had not greatly affected him. Though he like Fleur refused to have anything to do with his Mother. “Will you two shut up,” He said. Looking at the still anxious faces Janice, Judy, and Ailie he kindly said, “Why are you three looking like rabbits caught in a car’s headlights.”
“Well it’s just that we’ve got to meet Miss Wilmot at one tomorrow, what will she say if she finds out we stayed up until six?” Ailie had spoken, she wanted to experience the whole of the party but she did not want it to be discovered that they had gone to one of Fleur’s famous wild parties.
“We won’t stay up until six.” Christian told her smiling, “Trust me, anyway if you don’t get up until twelve then you’ll probably have had a good few hours sleep. Dad said he’d take you to the Café, he wants a report on Fleur.”
“Well he won’t get much out of Miss Wilmot,” Fleur told him with a smirk, “She hardly knows me.”
Once they reached Fleur’s Grandparents house Fleur whisked the girls upstairs to her bedroom, which seemed to Judy to be full of clothes.
“Are these all yours?” Judy asked her curiously.
“Sadly no,” Fleur sighed, “Half are mine and half are my cousin Magali’s. She leant me some to help me find you three outfits for tonight.”
“Oh I was hoping you’d lend us something to wear Fleur!” Ailie exclaimed in delight, “We have no clothes to wear to a party.”
Luckily all of the girls were a similar build to each other and it did not take Fleur long to sort out who was wearing what. Ailie had borrowed a deep red knee length skirt of Fleur’s and a turquoise coloured top, she was also wearing Fleur’s black boots. Janice and Judy had both refused to wear skirts, they both were given jeans, Janice’s black and Judy’s blue. Judy wore the shirt Fleur had worn when she had come into school wearing the clothes from the night before, Janice had borrowed a white top with a pattern of black flowers covering it. Fleur herself had decided to wear a brown miniskirt, which had blue and purple stripes on it forming a tartan pattern, with a gold coloured top.
“Don’t drink anything Antoine gives you.” Fleur said suddenly, much to the surprise of the other girls.
“Why?” Asked Janice.
“Because he makes these dreadful cocktails that taste really nice but which make you really ill later.” Fleur did not intend to drink much that night she thought it would be for the best if she tried to keep an eye on her friends.
“Why was Antoine so snarky about Nikolai, Fleur, I’ve been meaning to ask?” It was Judy who asked the question.
Fleur shifted awkwardly before saying, “I don’t know they’ve never met. I suppose it could be because I had a fling with Antoine last year and he could be jealous.”
“He didn’t seem very nice when we met him.” Ailie remarked, “I think your brothers and Marc are much nicer.”
“Oh Antoine’s alright,” Fleur shrugged, “You just have to know how to handle him.”
For some unknown reason Ailie, Janice and Judy had imagined that Fleur and her Father did not get on well. But when they met him they discovered this to be wrong.
“Daddy, is it still alright for you to take the girls into town tomorrow morning?” Fleur asked when her Father returned home after giving him a hug.
“Yes of course it is baby.” He told her affectionately.
“Good good.”
“Fleur, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends,” He asked laughing as Fleur was about to walk out of the room. Fleur did so and her father turned to the trio saying, “Fleur’s told me a lot about you three, and I want you to know how thankful I am that she’s friends with you. I miss Fleur a lot and it makes things easier knowing that she has three good friends at school with her.”
Fleur turned to her Father and said, “Oh Daddy, you can’t miss me more than I miss you, it couldn’t be possible.”
“It is possible Fleur, you miss everyone back home whose special in your heart, my heart only misses you.”

going back to the earlier discussion about Catcher in the Rye and other forbidden books, I was re-reading A Little Love Song last week and it mentioned Jane Eyre as a forbidden book in boarding schools during the 1930s/40s. Was this true? *gasps in horror at the thought*

regarding the 'who does Fleur remind Bill of' issue, the only girl I can think is Joan Baker.

#225:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sat Feb 07, 2004 11:21 pm

Here's rather a long piece, am very tired after writing it!

It was a big group who sat down to eat the meal in Fleur’s Grandparents house. After it had finished Fleur and her cousin Magali, who was very like Fleur but with black curls rushed the other girls upstairs to change and do their makeup. Magali was only two months younger than Fleur but as her birthday was in September she was in the year below at school. She was only rarely allowed to go to parties like this despite the fact that her brother went to them all, so she was very excited about the night.
Christian, Paul and Marc had been shouting at Fleur to hurry up for quarter of an hour before she was eventually ready, it was a twenty minute walk to Marc and Magali’s house and everyone wanted to get there before any of the guests arrived. Eventually Fleur was ready and pulling on a coat she skipped out of the house to join the impatient others who had gone outside when she came downstairs in the hope of hurrying her up.
“We have to go and get Antoine you know.” She said as they began to walk.
“Yes we know.” Christian said a tad irritably.
“Christian,” Fleur said putting a hand on his arm, “Why are you using that tone with me? You never use that tone with me.”
“I’m sorry Fleur, it’s just been a bit stressful.”
Fleur frowned she knew Christian was more than stressed but she did not know why, she knew however that he did not want to talk about it so slipped back to walk with her friends. Janice and Ailie were discussing Ailie’s sister Sybil, who was going to fly back with her mother for Christmas, and how exciting it would be to see baby Malvina. Judy was talking to Paul about something or other, Paul’s French was very limited and he found it difficult to talk to his Swiss cousins, he was glad that there were going to be some English people at the party.
“Fleur what is wrong?” Asked Magali softly, she and Fleur were great friends and called themselves sisters.
“Christian, something’s not right and it’s his birthday to!”
“Him and Marc have had an argument.” Magali carefully looked around her to see if anyone was listening.
“Why? What about?”
“Your friend Ailie.”
“Oh God, what have they said?”
“Well Christian said she was really pretty and Marc told him not to get any ideas cause he’d seen her first.”
“Right,” Fleur stated, ”I am keeping an eye on both of them tonight and am not letting Ailie out of my sight. The only bad thing about Christian is that he tries it on with my friends, Chloe has only just started being herself to me again after Christian dumped her and I’m not letting Christian wreck my friendship with Ailie like he almost did with Chloe.”
At this point Antoine came over to great Fleur, “Fleur baby, how are you?”
“I’m fine thanks,” She told him dryly, “You?”
“Great, here I’ve brought you a present.” He gave her a plastic bag, inside was a bottle of wine.
“Thanks,” Fleur smiled, “But it’s Christians birthday.”
“Yeah I know, I’ve got him some vodka, I’d better give it to him now actually.”
Marc and Magali’s house was situated at the top of a dark lane, no other houses were that close by so there was no worry over how much noise could be made. Fleur together with Magali made sure that all valuables were locked away before the bulk of the guests arrived, many of whom were friends of Marc and who Christian and Fleur had met when spending their holidays in Switzerland over the years.
Fleur shared the bottle of wine, which Antoine had given her between her friends and cousin, reasoning with herself that it could not be possible for them to get drunk on one glass of wine. The boys had put some records on and someone had brought an acoustic guitar out from somewhere. Fleur thought the party was going well, she was managing to keep an eye on her friends while having a good time herself. Ailie was having a great time liking the whole new experience and was not aware of the fact that Marc and Christian had fallen out over her. Janice was having a much better time than she thought she’d have, Fleur had persuaded her to leave her hair down and she was getting many compliments from the girls there about how long and sleek her hair was. Judy spent a long time talking to Paul, she could not understand why him and Fleur were not as close as Fleur and Christian were. They talked about lots of random things but it was what Paul said about his Mother that made Judy wonder.
“I think me and Fleur don’t get on as well as we could do because of her you know. I think Fleur is a tiny bit jealous that my Mother chose to take me with her and not Fleur. Fleur though is right not to have anything to do with her, what she did to Fleur and Christian is completely wrong and unnatural.”
“Why did she do it?” Judy asked softly seeing the anger in his face.
“Oh I don’t know, she said she couldn’t take all four of us with her, whether it was lucky dip I don’t know.” Paul spoke bitterly he was ashamed of the way his Mother had torn his family apart. “Lets not talk about it, Fleur was saying that your school can be very nineteen thirty-ish at times. Is that true or is she just exaggerating?”
“I think it’s probably true, our head you see as been with the school since it was in Austria before the war.”
Paul said something non-commitable, he was thinking to himself that his Mother had been to a school in Austria before the war.
Fleur was sitting with Christian on the couch. He was trying to strum on the guitar but had had a bit too much to drink so was failing dismally.
“Baby Sister,” He slurred, “Do you know what Baby Sister?”
“What Christian?” Fleur said brightly trying not to laugh at her usually so composed brother.
“I miss you. Everyone misses you, Nikolai especially. I’ve a message from him… but I’m afraid I can’t remember it sorry.”
“Is Nikolai still the same Christian?” Fleur asked quietly.
“He’s quieter but he still chain smokes so I suppose he still is the same.”
“I’d be worried if he wasn’t still a chain smoker, that would mean someone had more influence over him than me. I do wish he’d stop but he pays no attention.”
“He smokes even more now,” Christian said drowsily, “His skin gets a yellow tinge to it in certain lights.” Christian yawned again and closed his eyes.
A voice next to Fleur said smoothly, “Do you want a drink Fleur?”
“What is it?” She asked cautiously.
“Vodka and lemon and lime. Your favourite.”
“Oh ok.” She said slowly trying to judge what Antoine would say next.
“Fleur you know I want to tell you something, I think your great, your pretty, smart and so much fun.” To Fleur’s horror Antoine was being sincere.
“Antoine you know I’ve been with Nikolai for eight months.”
“Yeah but well he needn’t know anything.” Antoine leaned closer to Fleur, she felt trapped and needed to get out but he was holding on to her hand tightly. A harassed looking Janice created a welcome diversion.
“Oh Fleur,” She cried, “You must come quickly, something awful has happened!”

Hmm... also intrigued by question of Fleur's mother!
Pre-war (and anyway, has to be old enough to make Fleur contemporary with Janice etc., so even if teenage mother, can't be OOAOML!), "breezy, faintly bossy manner", probably brown eyes & curly hair... also,

Eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Nicci, for quite some time, Jane Eyre was considered to be unsuitable reading for teenage girls. When it was first published, it was considered to be an obscene book as Jane, the heroine, admitted to having sexual feelings for Edward Rochester. In those days, women were not supposed to have sexual feelings. I suppose the boarding school authorities were of the opinion that reading about these feelings would stir up curiosity about matters best left buried.

Thanks for the info Jennie. I understand it but i'm still shocked. I can't imagine not having read about Jane and Rochester.
I think it's a wonderful book for our times, demonstrating that its not all about looks, more about passion and sharing interests etc. Of course, the bigamy and and idea of locking up your insane wife in the tower might not go down so well. (or might, depending on your point of view!) Wink

Jumps down cliff to have some Bailey's, bringing next part of story along to!

Fleur quickly jumped out of seat, away from Antoine. “What’s happened?” She asked frantically realising that she hadn’t seen Ailie for a while. Christian had passed out on the sofa but where was Marc?
“You must come upstairs,” Janice told her distractedly, “Come on quick.”
Janice ran up the stairs and Fleur followed her wondering what was going on and feeling guilty that she hadn’t kept a closer eye on her friends. Janice led Fleur into the bathroom and for a minute she was relieved to see that nothing had happened to Ailie who was washing her hands in the sink, but then Fleur's heart sank as she saw Magali crouching next to the toilet her face pale.
“Oh Magali,” Fleur sighed, realising that Magali had had too much to drink.
“I’m sorry Fleur,” Magali croaked.
“Don’t be,” Fleur told her, “It happens to everyone believe me.”
“What are we going to do with her?” Ailie asked, “She can’t stay in here people need to use the bathroom.”
“We’ll have to put her to bed.” Fleur said decidedly, “Janice will you go and run the kettle for me, I‘ll give her a hot water bottle. Oh and ask Marc if there a any plain biscuits in the house. She should eat something really.”
Janice ran out of the bathroom, she was worried about Magali, she was only little slip of a thing.
“Ailie, will you help me get Magali to her bedroom.”
“Yeah, but Fleur what if she’s sick again.”
“She’s got a wastepaper basket in her room, she can be sick in that.”
The two girls supported Magali to her room, who collapsed on to her bed as soon as she got there. Fleur pulled off the clothes which had sick on them and gave Magali her pyjama top to put on. Ailie got Magali a glass of water and held it for her while she took tiny sips out of it. She also found a hot water bottle and waited for Janice to return.
Janice came back with a boiling hot kettle, some biscuits and Marc. Janice handed Fleur the kettle and tried to get Magali to eat the biscuits. Marc looked at his sister in disgust.
“Magali, why did you have to drink to much? You know Mums will go mad, she’ll give me such a row for not looking after you properly.”
“Sorry Marc, I didn’t mean to be sick.” Magali said weakly.
“Yeah well sorry won’t change back time.” Marc snapped.
Ailie was shocked by what she heard him say, she had thought he was nice and understanding. “How can you say those things?” She hissed, “Look at her there, she’s been really ill and you are being so mean to her. Haven’t you stopped to think that what your saying could be distressing for her, no you haven’t all your thinking about is yourself.”
Marc did not say anything in reply and just stood there silently for a few minutes before leaving the room. Fleur smiled secretly to her-self it looked as if Ailie was not falling for Marc as much as Fleur had worried she would, hopefully she would remember his attitude to his sister for a long time to come.

It feels quite strange to read about Chalet girls living a normal teenage life. I hope there are no other bad consequences from the party.

I wondered about that for a moment too but then they'd all had at least SOME wine and goodness knows what else since Fleur left them. Plus it's not really something they're used to is it... people drinking too much an then throwing up.

#255:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 11:50 am

Here's what I meant to post last night before getting distracted!

None of them woke up until gone eleven the next morning. Janice was the first to wake and was shocked to discover what the time was; she had never slept that late before. Janice lay there for a few minutes trying to see if she could hear any movement in the house, when she decided that she was the only one awake she thought it would be for the best to wake Fleur up. She went to wear Fleur was sleeping and nudged her, Fleur who was not the best person at waking up muttered in her sleep and ignored Janice’s attempts to wake. Janice eventually resorted to shaking Fleur in an attempt to wake her up.
“What?” Fleur said sleepily.
“It’s nearly half eleven, don’t you think we ought to get up now.”
“Oh I suppose, wake the others then, I’d better check on Magali.”
Five minutes later Fleur led her friends into the kitchen, which was filled with empty bottles and dirty glasses from the night before.
“I can see it’s going to be fun having to clean all this mess up later.” She muttered to herself.
“How’s Magali?” Ailie asked in a concerned voice.
“Sleeping, I won’t wake her, it’s best if she sleeps her hangover off.”
All four girls looked tired but Judy looked decidedly the worst for wear. Fleur looking closely at her asked, “Are you feeling alright Judes?
“Yeah,” She answered in a strained voice, “I’ve just got a headache and feel a bit rank that’s all.” Fleur had introduced the word rank to them she had used it to describe how she felt on the morning after the night before, and now Judy understood what she meant.
“How much did you drink?” Fleur asked as she poured milk on her cereal, feeling guilty she had not kept as close an eye on Judy as she had on Ailie and Janice.
“I don’t know I had a few glasses of wine, and some Malibu too I think.”
“You do remember everything that happened though don’t you?” Fleur said anxiously.
“Yeah,” Judy said slowly, “Well I remember everything that happened but I don’t remember everything what I said or what people said to me. Does that make sense?”
“Hell yeah,” Fleur told her smiling, “That happens to me all the time. It’s when you don’t know what happened when it becomes worrying!”
By the time Fleur’s Father picked the girls up to take them to meet Miss Wilmot Judy was looking more like herself although still a little pale. Miss Wilmot, trying to gather some clues of who it was that Fleur reminded her of, did not seem to notice much to Fleur's relief.
Later that night when Ailie, Janice and Judy were alone they began to talk about the events of the night before.
“Judy,” Ailie asked hesitantly, “What is it like to be drunk?”
“I didn’t think I was drunk!” Judy said in distress.
“Well, what’s it like to drink as much as you did then?”
“I dunno,” Judy shrugged, “I just remember feeling really happy and laughing a lot, I think I was more confident as well. But then I was so tired when I went to bed.”
“Everyone was tired,” Janice said, “even Fleur.”
“Really oh good.”
“What were you talking to Paul about for so long for anyway.” Ailie asked running her fingers through her blonde curls.
“I don’t really know,” Judy said slowly, “We talked a bit about Fleur I know, I don’t know why she has all those issues with him he’s really nice. We just had a laugh later, he lives in London too and we were thinking up new cockney rhyming slang. He was drinking Bristol Cream at one point, I don’t quite know why just because it was there I think, and we just kept on looking at each other and saying “Bristol Cream, Crystal Dream” it was so funny.” Judy began to laugh at the memory of it.
Ailie and Janice just looked at each and shrugged, thinking that it was one of those you have to be there moments.
“Oh well next time we can all drink a bit more to build up our immune systems,” Ailie said not quite sure if what she was saying was right, “I’m sure none of us want to end up in the state Magali was in.”
“Do you think Fleur’s ever been as bad as that?” Janice asked.
“Oh she’s bound to have.” Judy remarked, “I’m almost certain that she was in the same state as Magali was on the night she came back home after she ran away.”
“I’m sure that no one in the school’s history as ever been drunk.” Ailie said slowly, “Not even in Tyrol, I would have heard about it otherwise.”
Judy froze at this point as she remembered something from the night before. “Do you know what Paul told me last night?” She whispered, “He said that his mother went to school in the Austrian Tyrol. Do you think Fleur knows?”
“What?” Janice exclaimed, “How could a ex chalet girl abandon her children the way she did?”
Ailie biting her fingernails and looking much younger than she had done the night before said, “I don’t think Fleur knows, and I don’t think we should mention it to her. I think it would only make her hate being at school even more than she already does.”

I like seeing the CS girls doing proper teenage things, though I'm glad that none of them ended up as ill as Magali - but I'm sure that it's as good for them as the school (hopefully) will turn out to be for Fleur.

Who is Fleur's mother?

Here's a bit more,

“Well it’s nice to see that we are all back save and sound,” Sighed Kathy Ferrars as she collapsed into an armchair in the staffroom.
“Kathy the way you talk,” Laughed her chief friend Nancy Wilmot, “Creates the believe that over halfterm something dreadful happens and half the girls usually end up in the San.”
The staff began to chuckle at this image, knowing that this had happened in the past.
“How was everyone’s half term, anyway?” Asked Joey Maynard who was visiting the staff for the evening.
“Oh fine,” Hilda answered, “There was a small drama between the two fourths but other than that it was very relaxing I gather.”
“Did the sixths enjoy themselves?” Joey asked Nancy smiling, as part of the sixths trip they had visited Joey’s old friend from school Frieda Von Ahlen for Kaffee and Kuchen.
“Oh yes I think it was a relief for them to have some time away from the middles.”
“Nancy,” Hilda asked looking up, “I’ve been meaning to ask, what happened when you met Fleur?”
“Not a lot,” Nancy said lazily, But then seeing a more detailed answer was expected from her she expanded, “Well she was about five minutes late when we met her, but she didn’t act as if she was, she just breezed in to the café and told the three girls to finish their drinks. She was wearing make up, her eyeliner was rather heavy and her lipstick very bright. Her two brothers were with her, they didn’t say much but the older one looked like the bad boy from the wrong side of town from the Hollywood movies, do you know what I mean? Then the next day her Father came and I spoke to him for a few minutes, Fleur was wearing makeup again but the other girls weren’t. But you know what Nell said of Fleur reminding her of someone, well I agree with her.”
“You do?” Joey exclaimed, “Why who does she remind you of?”
“I don’t know, it’s so annoying. She looks exactly like her Father so it’s not looks wise that she reminds me of someone, it’s more her mannerisms.”
“Maybe you and Nell have already met her before, and that’s why none of us can see a likeness to anyone.” Jo said thoughtfully.
“Talk sense Jo, when do you think I’d have met her?”
“Well doesn’t she live in Swansea, maybe you and Nell met her when you were in Swansea at some point you know you went there quite a bit when the school was on St Brivals.”
“No, I’m sure I’ve never met her before,” Nancy said firmly, “She reminds me of someone I have not seen or heard of in a long time but I don’t have the slightest clue who it is.”

*still flumoxed as to Fleur's mother's identity. Joey is wrong, since we are told that she was a CS student in Tyrol. Hmmm..

We're not, though - we're just told it was a school in the Tyrol. Ailie and co just assume it was the Chalet. It could still be St Scholastika's - especially seeng as Nancy remembers, she was a Saint.

Okay, so has anyone seen American Pie....? JUST KIDDING!

I was glueing the back of our remote control - we broke it throwing it at the tv when they started showing Sex and the City repeats again - we want the new series, godammit! You know the way you have to hold it down til it sticks? Was doing that - and when I let go, my fingers were stuck together. You can't just rip them apart, coz all your skin will come off - so I was stuck like that for kind of a while. But all is ok now! Except for blisters on my fingers - coz I gave up trying to get them apart gently and I did rip them apart. Smile

Back to the story!!

#279:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 7:58 pm

Here's a bit more, might post more later but am not promising anything!

The term passed by quickly. Fleur continued to keep her head down and not attract too much attention to herself. She did not really want to take part in the Christmas concert, as she declared she would feel like a hypocrite as for her the meaning of Christmas was presents first and peace and goodwill second. The staff were shocked when she made this statement, and even more so when she said the only part she would consent to play in the concert would be on her guitar. The staff however did not feel that guitar would mix well with the rest of the school’s orchestra, so Fleur was left out of the Christmas concert. But it can be said that she did not seem to care one bit. The closer to the end of term it got the more excited Fleur was about going back home and seeing Nikolai again. She had already made plans for meeting up with Ailie, Janice and Judy in the holidays, they were to come and stay with her for a few days over New Year. Judy was none the worst for wear after her drinking experience, but she did find to her surprise that she was missing Paul a lot for only meeting him once. All three girls had not mentioned to Fleur what they had found out about her Mother, in fact they did not even talk about it amongst themselves thinking it was for the best if the matter was forgotten.
The staff were still perplexed about who Fleur reminded Nell and Nancy of. They still did not know exactly what to make of Fleur she was one of the quietest girls in the sixth, generally only speaking to when spoken to, she showed no interest in the younger members of the school and had on occasion turned a blind eye to slang and the speaking of the wrong language by the juniors. But Fleur was feeling more settled in school than she had previously done, she knew that being at a school like the Chalet school increased her chances of making it to Cambridge, and Fleur desperately wanted to go to Cambridge.
It was a cold morning a week before the end of term when Miss Annersley sitting in her study was told by Rosalie that there was a woman wanting to see her. Miss Annersley sighed and muttered something about wishing people would make appoints before telling Rosalie to show the lady in.
A tall woman with fashionably styled brown hair strolled into the room, her eyes were a bright blue and the smile on her lips refused to meet her eyes.
“Please sit down, Mrs…” Miss Annersley said graciously wondering who she was and what she wanted.
“Golden-Smith,” The lady said sitting down, “I’m sorry I didn’t inform you of my coming here but I was wondering would it be possible for me to see my daughter for a hour or so.”
“I’m sorry but who is your daughter?” Miss Annersley asked thinking frantically, “As far as I know we have no girls with Golden-Smith as a surname.”
“Oh my daughter isn’t a Golden-Smith,” The woman said with a faint laugh, “No my daughter is Fleur Matieux.”

#286:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:40 pm

Here's a last bit for tonight!

Fleur was walking to the Head’s study trying to work out why she had been sent for. She had been pulled out of a very interesting history lesson on the 1832 reform act and she was feeling disgruntled at missing out on what would happen next.
Miss Dene told Fleur that she could straight in, so Fleur knocked on the door and waited for Miss Annersley to call for her to come in before walking into the room. Miss Annersley was sitting at her desk talking to a brown haired woman. Fleur paused as the door shut behind her, it could not be, could it? It could not be her Mother sitting there. The woman turned around and was revealed to be Fleur’s Mother.
“Fleur, how well you look!” She gushed as she got up to great her daughter.
“What are you doing here?” Fleur asked her voice cold and hard.
“Why, to see you of course!” She answered with a laugh.
“I thought I had made it perfectly clear that I did not want to see you ever again.” Fleur had built a defensive shield around herself.
“Fleur, haven’t you thought that I’d like to see you though.”
“You didn’t want to see me for twelve years so I don’t see why there’s been a sudden change of heart.” Fleur said this to her Mother but her eyes were on her Head teacher who was trying to silently make her way to the door, “Miss Annersley, please don’t leave me alone with her.” Fleur’s tone of voice was the same as the one she had used with her Mother, she was feeling that Miss Annersley had let her down by allowing her Mother to have access to her.
“Fleur don’t you realise how hard it was for me not to see you for all those years, I just want to make up for lost time.” Mrs Golden-Smith moved closer to Fleur.
“Keep away from me,” Fleur demanded, “Why did you leave us then? Why did you take Paul and Emma but leave me and Christian?”
“I couldn’t take you all, I had no choice…”
“That’s a load of rubbish,” Fleur snapped, “You could have not gone at all.”
Silence fell on the room, Mrs Golden-Smith did not know how to answer her daughter, Miss Annersley felt that she was intruding, only Fleur’s words to her were keeping her in the room. Fleur felt more than she had ever done so since she had first arrived at school that she wanted to be at home with Nikolai. He would sort her problems out for her and tell her what he thought she should do.
“How’s school going, Fleur?” Mrs Golden-Smith asked bravely, thinking it would be best to talk to her daughter on a neutral topic.
“Fine,” Fleur answered distractedly, she was thinking of Nikolai and her friends back home, what would be their advice to her now?
“Are you settling in well?”
“Yeah…”
“Have you made lots of new friends?”
“Yeah…”
Mrs Golden-Smith turned to Miss Annersley in exasperation hoping to get more than one word answers.
“How long has the school been in Switzerland for?”
“About ten years (am guessing here, sorry if wrong, Caz),” Miss Annersley answered politely, while wishing she was somewhere else.
“Do you still have alternate language days?” Mrs Golden-Smith asked reminiscing.
“Yes we do,” Miss Annersley said before realising the way the question had been posed, “Why you’re not an old girl are you?”

All will be revealed tomorrow... Laughing

That was just plain mean Cazx! Brown hair, blue eyes, back in the Tirol... still at a loss! Evil or Very Mad

Interesting that Fleur didn't want to be a hypocrite, she didn't just go along with it anyway, seems she can be quite thoughtful and respectful when she wants to be.

Here's the next part of the story, sorry to leave you waiting for so long Laughing

Fleur snapped out of her daydream and turned to look at Miss Annersley in horror. Her Mother could not have been to the same school as her, her Father would not have sent her here if she had. Mrs Golden-Smith looked at Miss Annersley sharply before saying, “Of course I didn’t come to a school like this. No I was a pupil at St Scholastika’s. I was their captain when the school moved there, Elaine Gilling.”
Fleur let out a sigh of relief, she thought it would have been to much to bear if her Mother had gone to the Chalet School. Miss Annersley remembered back to the time when the school had been in Tyrol, she remembered Elaine Gilling as the girl whose black mood had nearly killed Joey Bettany and Maureen Donavan. She knew that Elaine had felt very bad about that incident but she also knew that she had encouraged the feud between the girls of the two schools. Nancy Wilmot had originally been a saint no doubt that was why Fleur had reminded her of someone.
“I have to say Miss Annersley that you have not changed a bit.” Elaine said a forced smile on her face.
“Well you have, I hardly recognise you.” Miss Annersley said dryly.
“I was just a year older than Fleur then, I changed a great deal over the next few years.”
Fleur turned to look at her Mother, “Why are you here?” She asked her in a tired voice.
“Why darling, I’ve told you I came to see you.”
“Well if that’s the only reason then can you please go because I don’t want to see you.”
“Oh Fleur, don’t be silly! Surely you’ve always wanted to have a relationship with me, to know who I am and to ask my advice.”
“No I can honestly say I haven’t, if I need advice from a motherly figure then I go to Dominique, Tante Melanie or Grandmere. Will you please get it in to your head that neither me or Christian want to have anything to do with you.”
“But Fleur I want to do something for you. I feel so guilty about doing what I did, I’ll do anything you tell me to, to make it up to you.”
Fleur turned to look at her Mother contemplatively, “Anything?” She said slowly.
“Anything.”
“I want you to leave me and Christian alone. That will suit us fine.” Fleur said this firmly before turning and walking out of the room.
She rushed upstairs to her dormitory and climbed into bed, where she cried into her pillow. She was angry that her Mother seemed to think that she could forgive her for abandoning her all those years ago. She was angry that her Mother had a connection with the school. She was angry with Miss Annersley for allowing her Mother to see her, Miss Annersley who she was beginning to like and respect as much as the other girls did. Well she did not like or respect her anymore, Fleur thought bitterly, when she came back after Christmas she would go back to her old rebellious ways. Miss Annersley had in Fleur’s eyes betrayed her.

I suppose we should have guessed, but I certainly didn't. Would like to see Miss Annersley escort the woman off the premises and then talk to Fleur. Please! Before Fleur over reacts!

*wonders what Fleur's father will have to say to this?*

Gah! I've just read this all in one go and I'm dying to know what Hilda will do with Fleur to prevent her from going off thye rails altogether.

Does Cazx post during the weekends?

#303:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 1:11 am

I'm not sure if she does post weekends Lisa, I hope so. At least her mother wasn't Vera Smithers, that would have been too nasty. Elaine was bad, but not unredeemable, at that point.

Cazx please continue the story - want to see how the Abbess is going to handle Fleur.

Well I hadn't a bloomin' clue who is was.

Nice linked up though Cazx.

Hope Miss Annersley (why do I find it so difficult to call her Hilda on any threads other than Real CS?) can get through to Fleur. The girl we're seeing now is not altogether different to girls she's helped in the past.

#309:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 3:41 pm

Well done Lesley Laughing
Here's what happens next Abi!

Janice had split paint down her-self in art, she had been sent to change into a spare uniform and had to endure Matey’s wrath when she showed her the state her uniform was in. When Janice entered the dormitory she saw Fleur, still lying face down on her pillow, crying her heart out. Janice forgetting the fact that she was covered in paint rushed over to her friend.
“Fleur darling what is wrong?” She said as she swooped down on her friend.
“She’s here Janice, and Miss Annersley let her see me, How could she do that?” Fleur said sobbing freely on to Janice’s shoulder.
“Whose here Fleur?” Janice said slowly, she thought she could guess but she did not want Fleur to get any ideas about how much she, Ailie and Judy knew.
“My… Mother,” Fleur gulped, “And she…used to go to school near this school when it was in Tyrol.”
Janice did not really understand what Fleur meant, “What do you mean Fleur?” She asked slowly.
“When the school was in Tyrol there was another school close by and she was head girl of that one.”
“Oh, I understand now,” Janice exclaimed she was actually relieved to find out that Fleur’s Mother had not been an ex Chalet girl. “Did Miss Annersley know her? Is that why she let her see you?”
“No, she didn’t recognise her.” Fleur began to sob even harder, “How could she have let her see me? Daddy will be so cross when he finds out. She’s betrayed me Janice, why did she do that? I’ve been trying so hard not to be wild and radical.”
“I’m sure Miss Annersley thought she was acting for the best.” Janice said sensibly, every instinct telling her to defend her headmistress.
“Well she didn’t.” Fleur said angrily, her tears beginning to subside.
“Fleur, you won’t do anything stupid will you?” Janice said fearfully as she began to realise just how black Fleur’s mood was.
Fleur did not say anything for a while before turning to her friend and saying, “Why should I continue to act submissively for any longer? Why shouldn’t I go back to wearing make up, and reading banned books? Why shouldn’t I begin to be a nuisance and pain to the staff again?”
“Fleur you can’t!” Janice cried in horror, she realised that Fleur could do things a lot worse than what she had previously done to scandalise the staff.
Fleur did not say reply to what Janice had just said, but did mutter to her self, ”I wish I could have a drink.”
Janice heard this and turned on Fleur severely, “And what good would that do? It wouldn’t change anything would it? You’d just end up like Magali, and I don’t want to see you in that state.”
Fleur did not say anything, she realised that Janice was right, she just sat on her bed studying the floor.
“Fleur tell me why should you go back to what you were like before, it’ll just upset the staff and get you into trouble.”
“I have to pay Miss Annersley back.” Fleur said slowly, “She shouldn’t have exposed me to my Mother like she did, can’t you see what it’s done to me?”
“Fleur do you really have to pay her back? Can’t you just forget about it?”
“No.” Fleur said firmly.
“Fleur please,” Janice implored, “For me do this. You know if you do carry on like the way you plan then you will eventually get expelled. You know that I won’t be allowed to see you if that happens for a long, long time, neither will Ailie or Judy. So for me will you promise to carry on acting as you were, please.”
Fleur did not want to loose her friendship with Janice, Ailie or Judy but she did not want to forgive Miss Annersley either. She thought about her options for a whole three minutes, she realised that Cambridge would be off if she got expelled, she knew her Father would be disappointed.
“Oh alright Janice,” Fleur said at last, “I’ll do as you want but I’m saying this now I’m not going to be forgiving Miss Annersley. I can’t go back to being friendly and trusting of her again. You’ll just have to accept that.”
When Miss Annersley sent for Fleur to see how she was, she found that Fleur’s manner had changed towards her. Fleur had usually been respectful towards her but from that day on she was cold and distant. Fleur’s manner only changed after an event, which made her grow up and loose her immature ways, occurred.

I can't decide whether I should leave the drabble here or write more, I know what's going to happen but it might get a bit dark and sinister... Confused
Let me know what you guys think I should do.

Of course you should write more drabble, Abi. As for dark and sinister, we thrive on that.

#318:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 8:22 pm

Ok here is some more drabble, thanks for saying you want more even if it is dark and sinister Laughing

It was the Christmas holidays and Ailie was meeting Janice at the station in Armiford. It was two days before New Year’s eve and they were going to visit Fleur until the day after New Year’s day. Ailie was only allowed to go because her Mother believed it would be good for Sybil if her noisy younger sister was away for a few days. Janice was consequently going because Ailie was allowed to go. Once they had boarded the train for Swansea and their parents had said goodbye they felt that they were able to talk freely.
“Is Judy coming or not?” Janice asked curiously, they knew she had been having problems in persuading her Parents in allowing her to make the train journey from London to Swansea by her-self.
“Yeah she is, Fleur phoned me last night, apparently Paul said he’d get the same train as her so Judy’s parents reluctantly allowed her to come. Fleur also told me that her Father, Step-Mother and the baby have gone to Switzerland, so Fleur and Christian are the only ones at home.”
Janice raised her eyebrows thinking to her-self that her parents would not have allowed her to visit if they knew there would be no adults at home.
“What did your parents say?” She asked Ailie.
“Oh, I didn’t tell them,” Ailie said matter of factly, “You know they wouldn’t have let me go if they knew that.”
Janice gazed out of the window for awhile thinking of what it would be like to meet Fleur’s friends.
“We get to meet Nikolai at long last.” She said at last to Ailie.
“Yeah,” Ailie replied smiling, “We’ve certainly heard enough about him.”
“I wonder if he’s nice.”
“Yeah, so do I. He doesn’t look like any of my boy cousins, but then again neither does Christian or Paul.”
“I wonder what Fleur’s triplets are like.”
“Holly and Chloe? From what Fleur says I’m a bit scared of meeting them.” Ailie confessed quietly, “She always goes on about how cool they are and what style they have.”
“I know what you mean,” Janice told her, “There’s the boy as well, Dylan, I wonder if he’s cool and stylish too.”
Ailie shrugged she did not really care about some boy who she had never met before. “Did Fleur tell you we’re going out tonight?”
Janice nodded, “She’s going to take us shopping when we get there so we can buy some clothes.”
“I know but you know for New Year well now her Dad’s gone she told me that she and Christian were going to have a house party to celebrate. Should be fun shouldn’t it.”
“I suppose so.” Janice said quietly, she did not know if Fleur would look after them so much if Nikolai was there.
The train began to slow down, “We’re here already!” Ailie exclaimed, “Come on Jan lets get going.”
The two friends walked off the train towards the entrance, Fleur was waiting for them there, and when she saw her two friends ran up and hugged them, “I’m so glad you’re here!” She gushed, “We’re going to have so much fun!”

Glad you carried on Caxz, I quite like dark and sinister, more soon please.
Assuming that Fleur's father is also Fleur's legal guardian, why did't he inform Mrs Annersley that Fleurs's mother wasn't to see her?

#321:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 11:19 pm

Ellie, remember that Miss Annersley didn't know anything much about Fleur's history until Joey told her. Fleur's father did not tell her anything about his ex wife! Laughing

In that case Fleur is being extremely unfair to Miss A - what else is the Head supposed to do when someone appears and asks to see their daughter and she has been told nothing to contradict same?

#323:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 10:58 am

Oh dear Lesley your right, I didn't think of that! All I can say is that Fleur is not the most rational person in the world, and she is looking for someone to blame!

Laughing Laughing Laughing Well who said that teenagers were rational? Perhaps she will eventually realise it!

Little bit more!

Fleur took Ailie and Janice shopping, as Judy’s train was not going to be arriving for a few hours.
“I’ve had an idea.” She told her two friends, “I think that you should each buy one item of clothing in the sale, and some accessories too. I’ll get stuff for Judy and she can pay me back! I want to get some new clothes too.”
Fleur dragged the two girls around each shop once before she let them buy anything, “You’ll only see something you like more and won’t have enough money to buy.” Then over lunch they talked about what clothes they liked best and what they thought was good value for money. Ailie had more money than Janice as both her Father and sister had given her spending money, she brought herself a pair of half price boots and a skirt which was also on sale, Janice brought herself a dress, which Fleur had picked out declaring that it was made for her, even though it was not on sale. Fleur herself was a bit of a shopoholic and had brought her self a new dress, top and long dangling silver earrings. She had brought Judy a shirt and plaited skirt, commenting that plaits were in fashion this spring. Fleur had tried to persuade her friends to get their ears pierced but found that she was unable to make them do it, instead she picked out charm bracelets for her friends.
Judy and Paul did not have to change trains on their journey to Swansea, they spent the journey renewing their aquiatence with each other and laughing over their previous meeting. Fleur was waiting for them at the train station and quickly whisked them off to the bus station.
“We have to rush,” She told her friends and twin, “The bus after next is not for another hour and I want to get home. There’s so much I have to do for tonight.”
“How are we getting to the dance Fleur?” Ailie asked when they were getting ready to go out.
“Christian is driving,” Fleur smirked, “He said he would so he can concentrate on playing in the gig. Nikolai and him play in the same band you know.”
“Yeah but not all of us will fit in Christian’s car.” Janice pointed out.
“Yeah, I know. You three will go with Christian and Paul in the car, I’ll go with Nikolai on his bike.”
Fleur looked at her friends and wondered if she ought to say anything more, she decided that she would just say, “You three will stick together tonight won’t you?”
“Why wear will you be?” Judy asked thinking to her-self that it was not fair if Fleur left them by them-selves so she could have some fun.
“Oh I’ll be there most of the time, but if we get separated then promise me that none of you will wonder around on your own, you never know who you might meet. There are some freaky people out there.”
The three girls looked at each other with a hint of alarm in their eyes before agreeing to promise Fleur that they would stick together.
Janice looked as if she was about to say something but at the same moment as she opened her mouth to speak a motor bike could be heard in the distance.
“That’s Nikolai!” Fleur said excitedly.
“How do you know that?” Judy asked.
“I just do… he’s here now.” Fleur shrugged as they heard a motor bike pull up in the drive, “Come on, you have to meet him!” Fleur called as she ran out of her room and down the stairs to great Nikolai, leaving her friends staring open mouthed at each other.

#328:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2004 9:34 pm

“I suppose we’d better go down and meet him.” Ailie said at last with a hint of aprehension in her voice. Janice and Judy nodded silently and the three girls made their way down the stairs into the hall. There they found Fleur with who they presumed to be Nikolai, the pair were totally oblivious to their not being on their own and Fleur’s friends did not quite know where they should look or what they should do. Fleur eventually tore herself away from Nikolai for long enough to realise that her friends were there.
“Hey you three come over here.” She called to them, “Nikolai, this is Ailie, Janice and Judy. You three this is Nikolai.”
Nikolai turned to face the girls. He was taller than Fleur, and rather skinny for a boy. His hair was a bit longer than it was in the picture but it looked as if a lot of time had been taken over it to make the style right. His eyes were a deep chocolate brown, almost as dark as his hair was, Janice noticed that he still wore eyeliner. He smiled at them and his haughty attractiveness suddenly turned into the attractiveness of a born charmer, “Hey,” he said, “Fleur’s told me a lot about you three.” His arm was around Fleur and it seemed to Judy that he did not mean to let go of Fleur for a long time yet.
“Hi,” the three girls said quietly feeling shy around this strange boy.
Christian strolled downstairs into the hall carrying a guitar in his arms, “Alright Nikolai?” He said, “Your guitar is in the car already, shall we get going now?”
They did not leave straight away though, Christian and Paul had to struggle to fit the guitar into the boot, and it was at least ten minutes before they were all ready for the journey. Nikolai and Fleur on the motor bike left first and as they sped out of sight on the road before them Paul turned to his brother and said, "You shouldn’t have let him take her on the bike, she could have squeezed in the back.”
Christian looked surprised and said, “Fleur always goes on Nikolai’s bike, even Dad doesn’t mind. He says as long as he drives safely then it’s ok.”
“Yeah but anything could happen especially on a cold night like this.” Paul argued.
Christian looking a bit annoyed said, “Is this about you being concerned for Fleur or because you don’t like Nikolai, because if it’s about you not liking Nikolai then I don’t want to hear anything about it.”
“I’m just concerned for Fleur,” Paul bit back, “She’s my twin and I don’t want anything to happen to her.”
Ailie looked at Janice and Judy, they were all a bit shocked to find out that Paul did not like Nikolai. Judy was trying to remember if Paul had ever mentioned Nikolai to her before, she did not think he had. Ailie was thinking that Christian had quickly put Paul in his place and was wondering if a similar conversation had occurred before. Janice was wondering if the reason why Paul and Fleur had a sometimes awkward relationship was because of Nikolai.

Thanks for helping to tempt my bunny back Laughing here's what happens next!

“Hey over here,” Fleur called to her brothers and friends when they walked into the hall, she and Nikolai were sitting in a dim corner surrounded by a group of laughing girls and aloof looking guys.
Fleur pulled Ailie and Judy into the seats next to her and told Janice to go and sit next to Nikolai, sitting opposite Fleur was a girls with long light brown hair and misty blue eyes, she smiled nervously at Ailie, Judy and Janice,
“You three,” Fleur said impressively to her friends, “this is Holly my favouritest person in the whole entire world. Holly, these are Ailie, Judy and Janice.”
“Hey,” Nikolai said indignantly, “If Holly is your favouritest person then what am I?”
Fleur laughed, “You know what you are honey! You are my unintended!”
Nikolai seemed satisfied with this answer as he kissed the top of Fleur’s curly head and took hold of one of her hands.
“Hi,” Holly said quietly to Ailie, Judy and Janice, “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“I bet you haven’t heard as much about us as we’ve about you!” Ailie said smiling, she knew that she should not have worried about Holly, she seemed so nice and shy.
A girl sat in the chair next to Holly, despite having darker hair and eyes it was still easy to tell that she was Holly’s sister.
“This is Chloe,” Holly said then turning to her sister she added, “These are Fleur’s friends, Ailie, Judy and Janice.”
Chloe seemed more confident than her sister and greeted them comfortably, but for the whole time that she was talking to them Ailie thought that her eyes were looking beyond them. When she turned around at one point she saw that standing a few feet behind her, talking to some friends was Christian. He saw her looking and smiled at her, Ailie smiled back and only turned away when Judy had poked her in the ribs demanding to know what she was looking at.
Janice was feeling a bit left out, Nikolai did talk a bit to her but he mainly concentrated on Fleur. Janice had been feeling alone for five minutes when a boy came and sat next to her.
“Hi,” He murmured, “Are you one of Fleur’s friends from school?”
Janice looked at him, she recognised him from the photo Fleur had of all her friends on the beach, he was the missing triplet Dylan.
“Yeah, I’m Janice.”
“I’m Dylan,” He said smiling, “It’s nice to meet you, Fleur told me that one of her friends wants to go to Art College, that’s you isn’t it.”
Janice nodded and the pair fell into an easy conversation about art, and a million other things which Janice had never thought a boy would want to talk about. He brought her drink and then another and for Janice the time of an hour seemed to pass in five minutes. They talked until a stressed looking Christian came over to the small cluster and told Nikolai and Dylan that they were playing in five minutes. “What do you play in the band then?” Janice asked curiously.
“Bass,” Dylan said then seeing the look of confusement on Janice’s face he added, “It’s a bit like guitar but with only four strings.”
Fleur dragged her friends down the front to watch the band, Kaiser Tsar, play. “They’re called that because they all do history and were either doing the Russian or German revolution when they formed.” She explained when Ailie had asked why they were called that. Fleur and Holly began to dance when the band began to play, and with Fleur taking her friends hands and making them join in it did not take long for Ailie, Judy and Janice to join in. Fleur kept on seeing people and every so often would give an exclamation of delight and dash off to great someone she had not seen for a long time. At one point a girl with short black hair appeared and Fleur gave a shriek of delight and hugged her violently, “Kitty, darling, my partner in crime! I haven’t seen you for so long! Did you have a good time in France over Christmas? You are coming to mine for New Year aren’t you?” Fleur moved to the edge of the crowd so she and Kitty could talk by themselves. Ailie, Janice and Judy stayed with Holly, Chloe and a girl with long blonde hair and a vague expression on her face called Daisy. Near the end of the set Janice and Ailie slipped off to the bathroom, leaving Judy with Fleur’s friends. The band had just finished playing when they came back and Ailie found that she was going to have to push past a lot of people to get back to where she had been.
“Come on Jan this way,” She said to Janice turning round to see if she was ok but to Ailie’s anxiety Janice seemed to have gone. Ailie did not know what to do and decided to go and find Judy and then look for Janice. But when she got back to where they had been standing Ailie could not see Judy anywhere either. Ailie was lost and she did not know what she should do or where she should go!

Hmmm, they've all become split up, they're all slightly naive, at least one of them has been drinking steadily, Fleur isn't bothering to look out for them as she did before, somehow the chances of them all getting home completely unscathed look a little remote.
More please Caxz.

Here's some more, it will ease your minds a little bit.Laughing
Might post more later, depends on whether I have enough time between dinner and getting ready to go out!

Ailie remembering Fleur’s words from earlier on naturally panicked. She went back to the toilets and checked to see if Janice was there, she was not, she then went back to where she had left Judy, there was still no Judy or Janice there either. Ailie went back to where they had been sitting earlier but now there were different people sitting there, people she did not know. Ailie wondered around hoping that she would soon meet someone she knew. She checked the bar but did not recognise any of the people there. Ailie felt as if she was going to cry she was all alone, what if Fleur and the others had left without her or had gone somewhere else. She was going back to cry in the toilet when her someone grabbed her arm and pulled her into the shadows.
Judy had gone to talk to Paul when the band had stopped playing.
“Are you having a good time?” She asked him.
He smiled at her and answered, “Yeah it’s alright.”
“Do you play guitar like Christian and Fleur?”
“A little but I haven’t been learning for long. Fleur’s trying to teach me, she says that I’m not a natural but if I work hard then I’ll be as good as her. She taught Nikolai to play you know, he’s only been learning for just over a year and look how good he is.” The praise that Paul was giving to Nikolai seemed to be grudgingly given.
“You don’t like him, do you?” Judy said quietly, instinctively taking hold of his hand.
“How do you know that?” Paul said, “Is it that obvious.”
“It was only obvious when you were talking to Christian. Why don’t you like him?”
Paul was silent for a few minutes, he was not annoyed with Judy he was just pondering on how to answer the question. “Has Fleur told you about how me and her met?” He asked at last .
Judy shock her head, “No, she hasn’t.”
“Well when my Mother decided to reveal herself to Fleur and Christian she decided to rent a house for a few weeks a couple of miles away from Dad’s house. One night a few days after the day when she turned up at Dad’s house wanting to see Fleur and Christian was horrible. Mother was upset about Fleur and Christian’s reaction towards her, she was also upset that my Father had told her that she could only see them if they wanted to see her. She knew that they wouldn’t want to see her so she was angry, cross and hysterical. I just wanted to get out of the house so I went for a walk and ended up at this beach. There was a party going on there, one of the girls reminded me of someone, I couldn’t think who but then I realised that she looked like me and could be Fleur. I went over to her when she had gone to get a drink on her own and asked if I could talk to her. She had no idea who I was and was also quite drunk so told me I could. When I found out she was Fleur I told her that I was Paul, her twin. Fleur did not take this well and started shouting and screaming at me.” Paul paused he did not know if he should tell Judy the rest, he knew Fleur would not want him too.
“And what happened then?” Judy whispered moving closer to him.
“Nikolai, as you can see, is very protective of Fleur. He came to see what was the matter, he’d been drinking too, and well he hit me when he found out what was going on. We ended up having a huge fight, which only stopped when Christian pulled us apart. I guess that is why me and Nikolai don’t get on but Fleur does not understand and takes Nikolai’s part all of the time. I think he blames me in a way for why she had to go to your school, you see in the fight he got a cut above his eye and Fleur in the drunken state she was in insisted on going home and getting him sorted out. It was after that night that Dad told her that she must go away to school but I think it would have happened anyway from what Christian has told me.”
“Did you beat him in the fight then?” Judy asked slowly, thinking that could be another reason why Fleur could be so strange towards Paul.
Paul laughed bitterly, “No, you should have seen the state I was in. Two black eyes, a swollen lip and bruises all over my stomach.”
Judy frowned, “I don’t think I like Nikolai all that much.” She told him, “I think Fleur is daft putting him before you.”

I'm not sure Ailie being pulled into the shadows eases my mind any! Unless it was Janice or Fleur who grabbed her arm but I really doubt it Confused *worries*

Did manage to write a bit more! Sorry if some of the language is offensive, Confused if it is then erase it and I'll edit it tomorrow. Nicci it was just Judy and Paul talking, Ailie was not there.

Ailie let out a tiny moan of terror, and closed her eyes, who had pulled her over here, she asked herself.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you?” Said a voice she recognised but could not place. Ailie opened her eyes and saw that it was Christian.
“Oh, thank God,” Ailie exclaimed, “I thought everyone had gone without me and that I was lost and I did not know what to do and…” Ailie trailed off, she was blushing a bright crimson she sounded so immature, what would Christian think of her?
Christian just laughed then looking into Ailie’s blue eyes told her, “I wouldn’t let Fleur leave without you.”
Ailie thought her heart had missed a beat and she felt her legs go weak, but then she remembered something, “Janice, I lost her! We have to find her she’ll be in such a state!”
“Janice is fine Ailie,” Christian told her, “Dylan and her are talking outside I saw them just now.”
Ailie felt annoyed, so Janice had gone off with Dylan had she, and left her all alone. Hadn’t Janice spent enough time that evening talking to Dylan, she had barely spoken to her and Judy since they had got there.
“What are you thinking?” Christian asked Ailie lightly, offering her some of his drink.
“That I’ve never seen Janice look at someone like she was looking at Dylan before.” Ailie told him not really thinking of what she was saying.
“Really?” Christian asked, “You mean she’s not the usual skank who he falls for.”
“Dylan’s fallen for Jan?” Ailie was confused.
“Hell yeah,” Said Christian using one of Fleur’s favourite phrases, “Didn’t you notice the look in his eyes.”
Ailie shrugged she could not say to have noticed.
“It’s like the look in my eyes now, when I’m talking to you now.”
Ailie flushed but before she could answer, Chloe appeared a somewhat cross expression on her face.
“Where have you been?” She demanded to Ailie, “we have been worried sick!”
“It’s alright Chloe she was talking to me.” Christian said smoothly, Chloe just glared at him and pulled Ailie away.
“What were you talking to Christian about?” She asked when they were sitting down with Holly and Daisy.
“Oh this and that.” Ailie said vaguely thinking about what Christian had said to her.
Chloe looked at Ailie thoughtfully before saying abruptly, “Some advice about Christian Ailie, he’s a male slut be on your guard when you’re around him. In fact it’s the same for all of the guys.”
Holly looked at her sister and said sharply, “I think your being a bit harsh Chloe, Christian is not that bad. Besides you can’t describe Dylan and Nikolai as that.”
“Nikolai used to be before Fleur tamed him,” She snapped at her sister, “You’re right about Dylan, but remember Holly I know Christian a lot better than you do. I know what he can be like.”
Ailie felt very confused, what was Christian like? Was Chloe telling the truth, by the looks on Holly’s and Daisy’s faces she did not entirely think so. And why did Chloe keep on giving her dirty looks when she thought she wasn’t looking.
It was Daisy who answered most of Ailie’s questions when she said, “Chloe will you please get over all your jealousies about Christian.”

Here's a bit more!

They did not leave until nearly two in the morning. Ailie, Janice and Judy all just wanted to go straight to bed and sleep.
“Where’s everyone sleeping then?” Christian asked Fleur.
“I don’t know,” Fleur answered shrugging her shoulders, “There are two free rooms so two of you can share and one can have their own room or you can all share it’s up to you.”
“Ailie can have the room to her-self,” Janice offered, feeling guilty that she and Judy had left her on her own.
“Thanks,” Ailie said, she liked to have her own space at times and tonight she needed to think.
“Right if that’s settled then,” Fleur said moving with Nikolai to the door, “I’ll be off to bed.”
“Hang on!” Paul suddenly said, “Where is Nikolai sleeping?”
“In my room…”
Paul turned to Christian and said, “Your not going to let him are you.”
Christian not looking totally happy with this arrangement merely nodded.
“Nikolai always stays in my room when he stays over.” Fleur said sulkily.
“Paul just give it a rest,” Nikolai drawled looking quite menacing as he lit a cigarette.
Paul moved forward angrily but stopped when Judy laid a calming hand on his arm. Fleur watching through narrowed eyes noticed and wondered. She decided that this was not the time to say anything though and taking hold of Nikolai’s hand stalked out of the room.
The next morning Holly phoned Fleur and spent an hour telling her all about Chloe’s comments to Ailie. “I think you’d better talk to your friends Fleur and give them a stronger hint, to me Ailie looked as if she did not fully understand what Chloe was trying to say.” Was what Holly had said before saying goodbye.
Fleur decided that she and her friends would have a girlie day recovering from the night before.
“You did have a good time last night, didn’t you?” She had asked anxiously.
“Yeah, it was fun!” Judy answered.
“I liked meeting your friends Fleur,” Janice told her seriously.
“You mean you liked meeting Dylan!” Ailie said laughingly as Janice blushed.
“Dylan’s a babe,” Fleur said smiling. “What about you though Ailie, did you enjoy?”
“Yeah it was alright… Fleur does Chloe not like me for some reason?”
Fleur bit her lip, she did not really know what to say, “Chloe can just be a bit strange at times, especially when she’s been drinking, just ignore her that’s what we all do.”
“She said all your male friends were male sluts,” Ailie persisted,
“Yeah she was probably trying to warn you because you are really pretty.” Fleur said awkwardly.
“Warn Ailie about what?” Janice said in a confused voice.
“About some of the guys wanting to take advantage of you.”
“Take advantage of us?” Judy said slowly, “In what way?”
Fleur frowning slightly said, “Well you know…”
Ailie guessing that Fleur expected them to know something, which they did not, said frankly, “No Fleur we don’t know.”
“You honestly don’t know what guys want from us girls?” Fleur said in a hushed voice.
Her three friends shook their heads. Fleur closed her eyes briefly, they were so naïve in some ways still and this was one of them she thought to herself. Why didn’t they already know? Why did she have to be the one to tell them? Fleur rather unfairly blamed the Chalet School, they just want to keep them as children for as long as possible, even when they are becoming women they are not told anything beyond the necessaries, she thought.
“I suppose I’d better tell you then,” Fleur said slowly, “You’ll have to know sooner or later anyway.”

On Edit:

I think if Fleur is sleeping with Nikolai, then she's only fuelling her own insecurity - if she thinks he's "only after one thing" then it's a very sad reflection on him and their relationship. I'd hate for the CS girls to get the wrong idea, or maybe they'll give her the right idea.

#397:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 4:33 pm

Perhaps Cazx is trying to work out how to write it, it might be a very embarrassing scene to write.

#398:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2004 8:37 pm

This was quite hard to write, don't know if it is any good.

Calmly and thoroughly Fleur explained to her friends about sex in a similar style to the one that her Tante Melanie had used when she had told her all about it when Fleur was thirteen. Judging by the scared and confused expressions on her friend’s faces Fleur guessed that they were feeling just as freaked out as she had done when she was thirteen.
“And well that’s basically everything you need to know,” Fleur wound up rather lamely, “You can ask me stuff if you like, I know it’s a bit much to take in all at once.”
Ailie, Janice and Judy glanced at each other, none of them had ever thought that this could happen, they all felt naïve and slightly unsure of what to say.
Judy feeling more curious rather than bold asked, “Fleur have you and Nikolai then…”
Fleur flushing slightly said defiantly, “Yeah we have.”
“But Fleur,” Janice said suddenly, “You said that all boys were after that one thing, how do you know that’s not what Nikolai is after.”
Fleur was not angry, which was what her friends had expected her to be. “I understand you’re thinking Jan. One of the reasons why I did not go out with Nikolai straight away when he started pestering me to was because he had a reputation of being a male slut. Of sleeping with loads of girls and cheating on the ones he did go out with. Two months after I met him I decided that I would go out with him like he wanted me to, I was going to talk to him at a party and see what happened then. But I didn’t get to the party until quite late and when Holly and I arrived my friend Kitty told us that Nikolai and some girl he had disappeared upstairs half an hour ago and hadn’t been seen since. I was mad and told my friends that I never wanted to see or speak to him again.”
“What made you change your mind about him then?” Judy asked thinking that if she were Fleur then she would never have gone out with Nikolai.
“I used to be in Christian’s band and Christian had let Nikolai join, I was supposed to be teaching Nikolai how to play guitar. Christian was not happy when I said I wouldn’t teach him anymore, Chris didn’t know about what had happened and he thought that I was being unreasonable. If I had told him then maybe things would have turned out differently, I don’t know. Anyway I changed my mind about teaching him guitar and me and Nikolai after a while got back to being friends who flirted with each other. Nikolai knew he had upset me and apologised about it, saying he did not know I was going to be there and that it had not meant anything, I didn’t know whether to believe him or not so things remained the same. Then in March we played a gig, only local bands were playing but we were headlining. At the end we were all so happy to have finished and performed well that we all started hugging each other and well when I hugged Nikolai I just started kissing him. It felt right and from that point on we were together.” Fleur paused, “But to answer your question Janice I know now that Nikolai is not like most boys because he never mentioned sex to me, it was I who first brought it up. When we talked about it he said that he was willing to wait for as long as I wanted to, and that I was more important to him. He knew if he pressured me then he would loose me. I waited until we’d been going out for about five months before I told him I wanted to.” Fleur looked at her friends, “I really love him, you know. Do you understand?”
Fleur’s friends nodded, they did kind of understand but did also think that Fleur was too young to know she was in love and express it in an adult way.
“Fleur,” Ailie said quietly, “Is what Chloe said about Christian true?”
“Ummm...” Fleur and Christian were fiercely loyal to each other and she did not know what to say. “Yes in a way.” She answered at last, deciding that they had better hear the truth, “He has got a reputation for it. But Chloe does tend to exaggerate his exploits at times because of what happened between them.”
“What happened?” Ailie persisted.
“Well they went out with each other for a while and well a couple of weeks after Chloe slept with Christian he dumped her. I was so cross with him, and Chloe would hardly talk to me, but I don’t think he dumped her because he’d had his way with her. She was annoying him, she wanted to be with him all the time and Christian needed his own space.”
“So it seems that all boys are to be kept away from,” Janice said a touch mournfully remembering that Dylan was in the same band as Christian and Nikolai.
“No not all boys.” Fleur said, “I know a five or six who are not like that, Paul and Dylan are two of those. But yes sadly most boys are like that.”

I've just caught up with the rest of the party and the aftermath. You handled that so well, Cazx, and in answer to your earlier question, the language was not at all offensive.

I feel sorry for Ailie, Janice and Judy that their mothers had not seen fit to explain 'the facts of life' to them - and sorry for Fleur to be put in the position of explaining about sex to three of her friends!

I hope she included contraceptive advice, though you couldn't get the pill in the early 60's if you were under age.

It's a bit soon, I know but - MORE please. This is so good.

Here's a short and quite boring bit, I'm really tired and couldn't write more!

Ailie, Janice and Judy all had a lot to take in after Fleur had spoken to them. Janice and Judy were less effected by Fleur’s talk, they were safe in the knowledge that Dylan and Paul were the good guys. Ailie however had to deal with the fact that Christian, who had been flirting with her and who she was attracted to, was most probably after one thing. Ailie did not want to stop talking to him or for him to stop flirting with her but she also did not want to get hurt by him like Chloe had done. She also wanted Chloe to stop treating her like a threat and for the pair of them to get along for the duration of her visit.
New Years Eve was supposed to be the big highlight in the few days that the three girls were spending with Fleur. The house was stocked up with party food, wine and vodka. Fleur spent the whole of New Years Eve cooking mini sausage rolls, eating half of them when they were hot out of the oven. She just wanted everything to run smoothly and for no major crisis’ to emerge, she was prepared for people getting drunk but she did not want for there to be cat fights amongst the girls or stress over guys from her chalet school friends.
Around twelve of Christian and Fleur’s close friends had been invited. Most of them lived close by but some were going to be staying the night, sleeping on the floor of the lounge. They began to arrive at around eight, each one of them brought a contribution for the drinks cabinet. Ailie, Janice and Judy could not quite see how so much alcohol was going to be consumed in one night. When Janice asked Fleur about it, Fleur laughed and said, “It’s New Year, you always have to have loads of drink on New Year just in case you run out!”
Fleur wanted to enjoy herself so she enlisted Daisy who was always to be relied on to keep a level head in all situations to keep an eye on her friends for her. She did not plan to abandon them but she knew that she could not be everywhere at once and that they would most probably wonder off on their own. Fleur believed that if she had Nikolai, Daisy and Holly’s eyes all looking out for her friends as well as her own then the evening would pass by with no trouble occurring.

We can only hope Fleur's beliefs turn out to be well founded.
